Koko's Children

Summary:

Koko had only a son, spawned from a past she'd rather not talk about.

But, as if the universe thought she was some kind of messiah, she was gifted with even more children.

And maybe Lloyd doesn't have the absolute worst life imaginable?

Notes:

So pretty much; Everyone will get a chapter detailing their upbringing and how they met Koko before getting essentially adopted by her. Some people, like Kai and Nya, will be lumped into 1 chapter because I said so. And sometimes I might not show Koko introducing them to the rest of the family, and maybe sometimes I will, it really depends on my mood at the time.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Koko PT1

Chapter Text

Koko would have to say that her life was, for a lack of a better term, pretty chaotic and all over the place. Most of her life was spent as a war lord, raised to be one at birth from her parents. She didn't know them much, since they were hardly around due to their battles, and they died when she was 15.

She made do with her life, having conquered and slain countless people who opposed her. If all went right, she would grow into her own war lordess and rule over the world one day! And then, on one particular battle field, she met Lord Montgomery Garmadon.

He, somehow, won her heart and in just a few war days they were engaged. About a year later, and they were married, united their domains as 1. Things looked up for the 2 of them, even if he hid his past aside from the mention of his "stubborn" brother. But then, one night, they had a few drinks and one thing led to another and...

She gave birth to La-Lloyd, a beautiful baby boy who's eyes shined like emeralds. Garmadon had been happy, boasting about the possibilities of their son becoming an even better war lord then they were, but something didn't sit right with her.

She remembered in her childhood about all of the assassination attempts on her, and all of the scars from the battle's she's won only served to add fuel towards her hatred. Truth be told, she only fought wars to prevent them from spreading. And looking down at her child, she just couldn't find enough blackness in her heart, her soul, to subject La-Lloyd to the same fate.

So, one night, she packed all of her stuff, left a note telling her ex husband goodbye, took La-Lloyd and shortened his name to just Lloyd, and changed her name from Misako to just Koko, and fled to Ninjago City, a placed that was protected from Garmadon by the elemental masters.

And, for almost 13 years, things played out like a record; She would wake up, take Lloyd to school, work her 4 different jobs a day, barely make enough money to make ends meet, pick up Lloyd from school, hear about his usually bad day, go back to their small apartment, cook dinner, play with Lloyd for a little bit, and then go to bed. And the next day, it was the same thing.

It only took a month of living in Ninjago City before people realized that she and Lloyd had history with Garmadon, and like the mindless sheep they were, they took out their anger on them. Multiple taxes were placed wherever she went, and Lloyd was subjected to constant bullying and harassment. But no one tried to kill him, not yet at least.

And for a long time, she was fine with that. Sure, she wishes she could spend more time with her son and live a normal life. And yes, she hates it whenever Garmadon invades just to have a "chat" with her that just included him begging for her to take him back. And yes, she absolutely despises people for their treatment of Lloyd. But hey, it was better than her childhood, she supposed.

She new that the Old Master, the main leader of the elemental masters of Ninjago, was her brother in law Wu, but she never really bothered to talk to him, not that he ever showed any interest in her.

And, well, she was okay with that. She was fine with it only being her and Lloyd, living in crap conditions, because Lloyd was a bright light in that darkness. He made it all worth it, even when she felt like giving in to the temptations of returning to her old life. It was just Koko and Lloyd against the world....

Well, that was until, over the course of about 2 and a half years, she acquired way more kids than she thought possible.

Chapter 2: Lloyd

Summary:

Angst and Angst and more Angst

Chapter Text

La-Lloyd Montgomery Garmadon, or just Lloyd, didn't understand why his life was so messed up for the longest time.

He only had flashes of his infancy, of a large castle with a man covered in black charcoal. Aside from that, he just assumed that he was a normal kid... Well, as normal as having sharp teeth and glowing green eyes.

His childhood only consisted of his mother taking him to school and people bullying him and the teachers never doing anything to stop it. He didn't understand it, why wouldn't they help him? He finally got his answer on his 6th year of living, when someone called him the "spawn of the devil Garmadon!"

He had been confused and asked what that meant, but he got a punch to the stomach in response. He asked his mother, and she finally gave him the clarity he both wanted and hated. He was the son of the war lord Garmadon, the same man who attacked the city on an almost weekly basis.

For the next few years of his life, he tried to prove everyone wrong. He joined the middle school's soccer team, her partook in multiple activities for the city, he did some casual littering preventing. But the more he tried, the more people pushed back on him. He was kicked off the soccer team day 1 because "he was a cures and would ruin their games," no one wanted to do anything with him, and more trash was thrown at his feet by people passing by.

It all went from bad to worse when, during his first day oh high school, the Elemental Masters of Ninjago, the city's protectors, all mysteriously vanished one day. The only one left to defend the city was the Old Master, Wu. He was very effective, but his age had showed in many instances.

And of course, Lloyd was blamed for the disappearance of the cities protectors. People believed that he had somehow captured or killed them, a spy on the inside if you will. Naturally, this led to him being bullied and harassed far more often. He found himself punched and tripped on a daily bases, people hurling insults and random items hard enough to leave bruises.

He begged his mom to let him drop out, giving multiple reasons for it. Such as: The teachers not giving a crap about him and giving him extra work to do, the principle giving him detention at the very start of the year, the harassment, and the lack of help. But Koko had told him that, while it was bad that it was happening, that he should try to ignore it and move on.

That opinion quickly changed when Harumi, a school girl he actually had a crush on, led him to the back of the school and stabbed him in the gut. She probably would've continued stabbing him if he didn't kick her in the shines, hard. But even when he was spilling blood all of himself, no one made any effort to help him.

After that, his mom had immediately withdrew him from school, her tears being something he never wanted to see ever again. She had completely broken down that day as she was the one who had to patch up his wounds since they both knew no doctors would ever help them. She had cried for her baby who could never have a normal childhood because of her.

But Lloyd never blamed his mother, as she was the one doing everything in her power to help him. There was only one person who he focused all of his anger on; His father, Lord Garmadon. HE was the one that made everyone hate them, and so Lloyd hated him right back.

After that day, Lloyd spent his time trying to provide in anyway he could for his mother, wearing sunglasses and a face mask to hide his identity. And for a long time, that was just how he was.

And then his mom had to go and adopt, like, 11 kids!

Chapter 3: Kai & Nya

Summary:

Kai and Nya don't have the best parents, but they have each other!

Notes:

Kai is a good brother, and Nya is a great sister.

Ray and Maya mean well, but they fall victim to their desires. Woops.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Kai and Nya's family didn't live in Ninjago City, not at first. Instead, they had lived in a quiet village up in the mountains for a long time. They only moved when Kai was 5 and Nya was a about 3 years old. Ray and Maya had heard about the better job deals in Ninjago City, and aspiring to give their kids a better life, they took the chance.

From there, the family became a bit divided; Maya worked at a local flower and aquarium, her fascination with water carrying over to her daughter. Ray got into welding and mechanical stuff like making machine parts for cars or trucks. And Kai was left to keep his sister company.

At first, Kai disliked being the babysitter, wanting to do his own thing and just sit around. But on one night, Nya was crying because of a bad dream, and their parents were still at work, so Kai took to helping her. From that night on, Kai became a sort of protector for her.

They did go to school, but Kai eventually stopped going when he realized that no one would be home to make dinner or wash the dishes or do basic house stuff. So Kai, at age 10, dropped out of school and took these responsibilities upon himself. He took Nya to school, saw her off, walked back to their apartment, did the dishes, studied some basic stuff on the free computer they were given, prepared dinner, picked up Nya from school, at dinner and played with her, and tucked her into bed.

Ray and Maya never noticed that their son had dropped out of school, whether it was because they didn't care or the school didn't care was a mystery to anyone who knew.

Speaking of the parents, with the constant attacks and the amount of work they had to do to provide a stable life, they became a bit stressed. One day, they just so happened to stumble into a bar, and their curiosity started a terrible chain of events and choices that they would come to regret.

They started to drink more, to take off the edge and get rid of the stress plaguing them. A lot of people fell into the trap they had, to no one's surprise. And it didn't help that as the years went on, the worse they got. They would come home completely hammered and either ignore the 2 children entirely, or express great annoyance with them.

Kai, who was 12 at the time, was old enough to understand what was happening and he tried his best to shield his sister from the horrors of their life. But Nya was just as smart, despite only being around 9, so she realized it to. In fact, she had known that their parents weren't alright for quite sometime.

Even though she knew that, Nya always tried to stay happy, because her happiness made Kai happy. When she was older, she would make sure that Kai was having just as much fun as she was and not sacrificing his own happiness for hers. But, not everything can last.

Ray and Maya began to just be continuously drunk, even going so far as to bring drinks home. And their anger problems began to skyrocket, with their yelling at each other sounding like thunder. The angry shouts were also directed at the 2 children for seemingly just being there.

Kai always tried to calm the situation and always made sure to keep Nya as far away from the conflict as possible. One night, he sat Nya down and told her that if their parents were to ever lay a single finger on her, the 2 would pack up their stuff and leave. Nya had agreed, both knowing that it was more like a "when" than "if."

Kai had began to save up money from doing chores for other people, like cleaning up the streets or house sitting a cat. He had saved up quite a bit for the possible moving out he and Nya would have to do. But, unfortunately, that day finally came.

Kai had heard a harsh cry from his and Nya's room, the siblings sharing one room and the parents having another, and he quickly ran to the kitchen. What he found shook him to the core with anger. Ray was standing over Nya, who was on the ground crying and holding her face. A harsh red mark could just barely be seen behind Nya's hand.

Kai heard Ray and Maya shout at Nya for not telling them about the money that Kai was spending for her school projects and necessary supplies, and Kai blew up. He shouted at his parents for never being there, always leaving them behind in the dust and leaving a 4 year old kid to raise a little girl.

Kai and Nya, at ages 15 and 13 respectively, moved out of their parent's apartment. They didn't even look as their children went off, the call of their addiction clouding their minds. Kai knew things would be difficult from then on, but he hoped he could at least give Nya a bit of a happier story.

And Nya, she felt numb. She was far too young when Ray and Maya pulled away from them, so much so that she didn't even call them mom or dad. Those honors went to Kai, who was her parents, big brother, and best friend all rolled into one big, warm, slightly stupid, and caring package. And if she sometimes called him mom or dad, then he wouldn't reprimand her for it.

Koko had been at the park when she saw 2 younglings all by themselves, with the brunette boy looking through a backpack and the ravenette girl fiddling with a notebook. For some reason, her chest told her to go to them, so she did. She interacted with them and found them to be quite enjoyable, with the boy, Kai, being very protective of the girl, Nya.

It probably should've ended with that, but thunder roared over head and rain began to drop down on them. She accidently heard the boy curse about not having a safe place to stay, and that made her pry a bit. She, eventually, learnt that the 2 kids were living on their own before the most recent Garmadon attack destroyed the apartment that they were staying at.

The guilt of her ex-husband's actions clawed at her chest and led her to make an offer for the 2 to stay with her, at least until they got their situation sorted. While reluctant at first, Kai had been easily convinced by Nya's basic reasoning.

And so Koko had taken Kai and Nya back home, all of them unaware of how permanent this situation would be.

Notes:

Lloyd sees his mom bring in 2 children and is like "wait WTF are these folks?" and they're like "screw you child" and they become siblings lol.

Chapter 4: Jay

Summary:

Jay never really knew his birth parents, and his adoptive ones didn't make it before his 20's.

Notes:

Very sad :'(

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Jay Gordan Walker lived with his parents, Ed and Edna Walker, for most of his life. He lived with them in their junkyard, which was located a bit off the coast and a few miles away from Ninjago City. He rarely got to go to the frankly amazing city, but when he did it felt amazing!

That doesn't mean that he disliked his home, quite the opposite in fact. Whenever they would get a new dump of trash from the city, he would rummage through it and find stuff that caught his interest. Ed and Edna found his little scavenging antics to be very adorable.

One day, while rummaging through an old junk pile, he an picture picture of his parents when they were a bit younger, they must've accidently thrown it out. But, while looking at the photo, a question had sparked in his mind like a lightbulb when its switch is flipped.

See, while he never went to school, that didn't mean he was dumb. He could tell you a lot about certain stuff that he liked... So long as you also liked it. But, one thing he did know was that Ed and Edna were old. Perhaps a bit too old to convive a child. (Please don't ask him how he learnt about it, the memory still scars him.)

He had asked them about the age gap when he was 13 and his patience finally ran out.

He was adopted.

He did not take the news all to well, but Ed and Edna tried to explain as calmly as they could. Apparently, a mysterious woman had shown up one night and had begged the elderly couple to take care of her child, that child being Jay. They took him in, as they would be heartless monsters not to, but the woman left without elaborating on anything else.

Despite the bombshell, Jay continued to love his Ma and Pa, with him working extra hard to help them out.

But, as said before, the couple were very old...

One day, on a day like any other, tragedy struck the Walker family. Somehow, both Ed and Edna suffered a duel heart attack and died. Jay couldn't really believe it at first, not even as they gave him their final words on their death beds. Reality only struck when he spent the night alone in the caravan that was meant for 3.

Life went on for a few years, with Jay trying his best to run the place all by himself. He picked up a few tricks regarding engineering from tinkering some old run down cars and trucks. He found himself busying himself to ignore the pain, even though he's tried to confront it multiple times in the past.

But life didn't seem to be done with the poor orphan just yet. When he was only 14, a company that was housed in Ninjago City had come by the junkyard to explain something to him; The entire place was being demolished, its contents would be simply chucked into the ocean for someone else to deal with.

Jay had fought back as much as he could, which wasn't a lot since he did not have even a fraction of the money to be able to file a court case against them. So, reluctantly, he moved out the day before they would destroy the place.

He had packed as much as he could into his old backpack; A framed photo of Ed and Edna, a seashell connected on a string (it was the only thing his birth mother left him, according to Pa,) some loose change, an old and scuffed textbook, and a few snacks to last him a while.

At age 14, Jay Gordan Walker was alone in the would.

Koko had had a bad day. First, she was nearly fired for being a few minutes late to work, then she was forbidden to get any food from the building, forcing her to quickly run down to the local market for her lunch, afterwards she had to do twice the amount of work that everyone else had, and finally someone had vandalized her car with spray paint.

It had been easy enough to remove, but what really ticked her off was when her car suddenly broke down halfway home. She had cursed herself and tried to see what was wrong, but she was not an engineer so she could not make heads or tails of it. Right when she was going to give up, someone called out to her.

To her surprise, she found herself approached by a young boy who offered to fix her car, for a price of course. She had agreed and was impressed by the level of skill he showed, easily being able to fix up her engine that had simply overheated in the summer sun.

She asked if she could offer him a ride, and he reluctantly agreed. The 2 chatted as Koko drove, her muscles already knew when to turn and when to brake. She overheard him muttering about food that night, and her heart sank like a rock.

When she got to her apartment, she offered the kid a nice meal in exchange for his services, to which the ginger had happily agreed to.

Well, he definitely got a lot more warm meals after that day.

Notes:

Add another one to the list!
RGB siblings are confused as to why they needed another member of the family, but Jay impresses Nya enough to get them to accept him.
Except for Kai, who is not happy about a potential boyfriend for his little sister.

Chapter 5: Cole

Summary:

Sometimes, losing someone you love can make you lose another person entirely.

Notes:

A small little twist of words, you will find.
- Master Yoda

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Cole's family had a fascination with music. His father, Lou, was a dance performer and had many students under him, learning the ways of feeling the beat and dancing. Cole's mother, Lilly, was more interested in the creation of music, having mastered many different forms of musical instruments.

Cole found himself gravitating more towards his mother's interests rather than his father's, attempting to learn some of the noise makers that she had. For the first 8 years of his life, he lived a very happy lifestyle of learning how to make music with his mother.

Lou tried to get Cole into dancing, and while the young boy could see the appeal, he just wasn't all that interested. This formed a slight wedge into their relationship, but nothing that bad. At least, it wasn't bad until Cole's 10th birthday.

Lilly had contracted an incurable disease, and she died after only 1 week in the hospital. Cole remembers how his father has completely shut himself away as he cried with grief. Eventually, the man got over it and decided to try and bond with his son.

And by "bond," I mean Lou decided to lock up all of Lilly's instruments and "heavily encourage" Cole into his lessons, saying that Cole's mother would've wanted him to do so. Not wanting to disappoint his late mother, even though he knew that she probably didn't want him to think like that, he agreed to join Lou's dance class.

Now, the lessons themselves were pretty alright, even if Lou went a bit harder on his students due to his grieving. But to Cole, he simply could not find his rhythm. He tripped over himself, made errors in simple gestures, and he could barely focus on his own 2 feet. Lou reprimanded him for this, sometimes even muttering about how disappointed Lilly must be.

It didn't help that whenever Cole got to the dance dojo, everyone outside would make comment about his appearance. Most of the other students were fit and clean shaven. Cole, meanwhile, was a bit less fit and had hair growing on his arms and legs at the ripe age of 13.

His father had told him to shave and work out more, and to stop eating so many sweets from the pantry, but Cole couldn't help himself. He had no problems with his body, but clearly everyone else did.

Things came to a head when one night, at age 16, Cole had the weirdest dream ever. He dreamt that he was on a floating island high above the clouds, and his mother had been there. They had talked for hours before Lilly had told Cole how proud she was of him, but not for the dancing.

See, Cole had been secretly practicing his musical talents at the dead of night, sneaking out of the house to play on the roof. Lilly had expressed how much she adored his little lullabies and his more heavy metal rock sessions he did further down into the streets. Before he had woken up, she had given him a kiss on the forehead, a hug, and some advice.

To follow his own path.

That advice came in handy when Lou found out about Cole sneaking out at night to practice. Lou had been so angry and disappointed that he took all of the instruments that Lilly had owned and, in a fit of rage, smashed them all with a hammer. Cole had shared similar anger towards Lou for this action, leading to an argument.

It was only when Lou played the "Lilly would be so disappointed in you" card that Cole finally snapped. That night, he packed whatever he could into his backpack and set out into the streets. When Lou woke up that morning, he discovered the hard truth.

Sometimes, losing someone you love can make you lose another person entirely; Yourself.

Koko had taken Lloyd, Kai, Nya, and Jay down to the market district of Ninjago City, as there was a sale going on today for some exotic fruits. She and Lloyd had to wear some small disguises in order to walk around and not get kicked out immediately.

While looking around the stands, she had heard some kind of music being played nearby. When she went over to investigate it, she found a boy in street clothing playing on a guitar, an empty box with "MONEY = SONGS" written on its side. Intrigued, and with a bit of pity, she had given him some money and he graciously started to play for her.

The song he played was pretty impressive, being a mixture of rock and country, all on a wooden guitar. When she asked about the song's origins, she was even more shocked to learn that he had written it himself. He did admit to not having the best library of inspirations to go off of, so Koko made a, probably reckless, decision.

She invited him over to study a few tunes, remembering that Kai and Jay both had some experience when it came to music, the former more than the ladder. Cole had agreed, being oddly chill about a stranger inviting him over.

He showed up, got along with everyone, learnt a thing or 2, and left. And then he repeated this the next day, and then the next, and the next, and before long, he was just staying there over night.

Notes:

Sorry to make Lou a bit of a jerk, but I figured it was appropriate. And did Cole actual speak with his mother? Eh, you figure it out.

Chapter 6: Zane & Pixal

Summary:

"Could it be it had a soul? A soul of silicon, but a soul nonetheless."

Notes:

Sorry BTW, but I lied.

This is actually the Julien & Borg chapter :/

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Dr. Julien was an old inventor when Cyrus Borg, owner of the wildly successful business "Borg Industries," had approached him for a collaboration. Borg was a world known company that focused on the betterment of civilian life. From advanced toasters to advanced fridges to advanced cars to just about any electronic.

But Borg had wanted to expand into the barely tinkered with world of robots. Specifically, androids! No, not the phone kind, but the kind that resemble humans and can do human tasks. A work of science fiction, but for Borg it was the inevitable future!

This is where Julien comes into play. He was a well known inventor of robotics, creating machines used by many people, even Garmadon, (Which was unintentional on Julien's part.) But the main point was his knowledge of advanced AI, with most of his inventions having some kind of AI system.

When they were signing the deal, Julien accepted that he would work for Borg under 2 conditions; 1: He would get some credit and royalties. And 2: He would be allowed to create and keep 2 of the robots he made.

Julien had always wanted a family of his own, but his natural seclusion and old age didn't bode well for him starting one. But if they were able to create sentient beings, then it was pretty much the same thing, right? Borg had little issue with the first condition, but the second one was a different story.

They both ultimately agreed on the terms and got to work. After only 4 years of hard work and testing, they came up with the first 2 models. One boy, and one girl. The boy was officially Model 0 #1 and the female was Model 0 #2, but Julien gave them the nicknames of "Zane" and "Pixal."

It was everything that Julien had ever wanted. Why yes, it was a bit of trouble giving them a bit more of the human experience than expected, he always tried to make it right with them. Julien saw them as his children, and he treated them as such. He talked to them, told them about the world and how much they could experience.

Borg, on the other hand, was a bit more interested in the financial opportunities of the androids. He'd put them through tests, like house work or office jobs. He never referred to them by their nicknames, just opting to use their official serial codes. But he and Julien pushed past that little gripe and started talking about renegotiations.

See, while Borg was happy for the success, he feared that the 2 were a bit TOO human. The nightmare of a robot uprising having been a fear since the start of the project. So Borg decided that any and all future models will have their emotions pretty much turned off, rendering them as soulless machines.

Julien pushed at this notion, not wanting to create what would essentially be slaves. Borg than threatened to call off their deal entirely, which would allow him to take Zane and Pixal by force. Ultimately, Julien reluctantly signed the new deal.

Zane and Pixal were taken to the main Cyrus Borg Tower, the main location of the business, so have their schematics scanned and to be reworked. Against Julien's wishes and agreements, Borg had decided to go ahead and shut the Model 0s' emotions off behind the doctor's back.

Julien had learnt of this accidently and had rushed to stop it, but he was only able to save Zane's emotions. Pixal was rendered emotionless, the feeling of joy, anger, sadness, envy, disgust, fear, boredom, and everything else that made a human, well, human, was lost with almost no way of returning it.

After this, Julien was officially cut off from Borg's operations. His inventions that were made with Borg property were to be claimed and taken from him, including Zane and Pixal. Refusing to let his children become mindless puppets, Julien managed to sneak them out of the tower just the night before he was officially kicked out.

Julien told them to run away and never look back, to try and forgive him for not being able to give them a normal life. While Pixal said goodbye in a monotone fashion, Zane had hugged his father, wishing he had real tears to shed. The androids ran off into the night while Julien left to face Borg himself.

In the end, Borg Industries unveiled their new line of androids, which were not capable of independent thought, the very next week. Borg was credited as the sole creator of them, with help from an anonymous source. Dr. Julien disappeared from the face of the Earth, no one understanding where the old man left to and just assumed he passed away.

And 2 android siblings, both ripped away from a normal life that they could never have, made the long trek to cities nearby in hopes of a normal life.

Koko was walking home at night, her eyes drooping with her yawns. Her job just HAD to keep her at work for an extra 4 hours because "the janitor couldn't make it that day." Bullcrap, she saw the janitor chilling outside while she worked her butt off in there. But hey, it's not like she was getting extra pay anyways.

She was too tired to notice someone in front of her until she ended up stumbling into them, a strange cold feeling pressing against her skin at the contact. "O-Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry about that!" Koko quickly apologized and looked up to see the person.

Surprisingly, they hadn't seemed to even flinch from the impact. They had light skin, white hair(?), strangely reflective eyes, and he was completely dressed in white winter clothing. Just when she was about to question the weirdness of wearing such clothing in the middle of summer, but someone came up next to him.

The poor girl's skin seemed deadly pale, almost appearing white. They had gray hair, which was more concerning than the man's white hair, and her eyes were just as reflective. She wore a simple purple garment with some matching purple shoes. What was even weirder, though, was the strange purple markings on her face and arms.

She had asked if they were alright and they answered with, "We are quite alright, thank you for the concern maam," and "Me nor Zane have sustained any outer or internal damage," respectively. Strangely, they had asked her if she had seen Koko Garmadon, which was weird and she figured she was probably going to get mugged.

Still, she was anything if not a kind lady, so she gave them the answer of HER being that same Koko Garmadon. She had been thrown for a loop when the asked if they could stay with her, "citing" multiple instances of people claiming to have seen her with strange people under her care.

She pretty much knew, right then and there, that they were going to be a part of her family. After all, if her family was already weird, why not make it even weirder?

Notes:

Everyone: Why are you so weird?

Zane and Pixal: We're robots.

Mostly everyone: NANI?

Nya and Lloyd: Oh cool. Pog moment!

Chapter 7: Skylor

Summary:

The secret ingredient to my secret noodles is.... Angst.

Notes:

CW: Abuse AKA Child Abuse.

I don't typically like to write about this stuff, but I just felt like giving Skylor that extra amount of angst.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Skylor never knew her mother outside of portraits of her on the walls. Apparently the woman had died during childbirth, a fact that Skylor was not supposed to know. Maybe that was why her father disliked her greatly.

Chen was a man of pure focus, giving his everything into his "Noodle Shop" and not having the time for anything else. At least, that's what most people believe. The truth was that the shop was simply a cover-up for his real form of business; An illegal fight club!

People he would personally invite, and sometimes his patrons' guests as well, people to come and take a match or 2, for a price of course. It was pretty barbaric; 2 or more people were put into a caged arena and would have to beat their opponent(s) into submission, after which they would claim their prize. The prize itself varied depending on who was fighting.

However, aside from Clouse, Chen did have a passion for an actual person, that being his late wife. He would pretty much spoil the woman, giving her gifts and treating her to many places around the world while Clouse ran the shop and fight club in his absence.

But as you guessed, it wasn't to last. She was pronounced pregnant and, while initially excited, he quickly regretted not getting her an abortion. When Skylor was born, the name given by her mother, his wife had passed away the night after. He had been struck with grief, but it quickly formed into anger.

He wanted to get rid of Skylor all together, but Clouse convinced him to keep her. A pretty bad move on the henchman's part, because Chen was not a good father at all. Even when Skylor was just a kid, he would always shout at her for committing even a single mistake and often locked her in her room until he went to get her for something.

He made sure to force a smile on himself and her whenever someone else was around, the last thing he wanted was for the authorities to be called and check the place out. So he simply bit his tongue when the doors were open, and unleashed his anger when they were closed.

By the time Skylor was 10, she was well aware that her father's actions were not right. She had pleaded with him multiple times, tears in her eyes as hiccups escaped her throat. This only resulted in him slapping her.

But it didn't stop with just one slap. Realizing that he had his own personal punching bag, he began to beat her at night when he got too angry, telling her that she was a worthless daughter and that she should've died instead of her mother. Skylor, being a kid, could only take the blows and hope not to anger her father the next day.

As the years rolled on, Skylor had tried her best to please her father in any way possible. She did all of the chores around the shop, made sure she studied to be top of her class at school, and she even took a place in his fight club as the undefeated champion. Chen took her efforts in strides, even going so far as to offer a high prize to anyone who managed to beat her.

That still didn't mean that she was happy, far from it in fact. She would often find herself tending her wounds all by herself, with Clouse sometimes helping her on particularly bad days. The scars and bruises that littered her body from both her fights and Chen's abuse were covered with hidden bandages, her body naturally healing them over time as any human's body did.

She sometimes cried to the picture of her mother that was located in her room, wishing that she had been there for even just a second. But for now, she bit her tongue and continued on with her life, never stepping out of line. After all, she had no friends to stay with and no other known family, so where else could she go?

When she was 16, she got her answer. She had stayed up late the previous night to study for her final exams, which meant that she was off her game that day. A big, muscular man had challenged her like many others before him. The battle was pretty long, lasting over 20 minutes, but he eventually managed to knock her out with a stroke of luck.

She had been taken by Clouse to her room and had woken up to Chen strangling her. He let go when Skylor's face turned a bit blue, but he wasn't done yet. He shouted and berated her for making a fool out of him, and he said that he would make sure that she wouldn't forget the failure. He took a knife from the kitchen, clearly intending on stabbing her arm and giving her a permanent scar.

For once in her life, Skylor fought back against Chen. She had managed to use her time fighting people against Chen's lack of experience and knocked the cutting device from his hands and taking it for herself. She had stabbed him in the leg, getting him off of her, before she made a mad dash for the door.

She managed to run out of Chen's Noodle Shop and had started running through the streets of Ninjago City, eventually finding herself in the more populated areas of the city.

She also did something for the first time that night; She cursed loud enough for the world to hear.

Koko was walking with Kai after picking up some groceries when they had spotted someone getting mugged in an alley way. Having a strong sense of justice, Kai quickly ran over to help only to nearly get toppled as the mugger was sent flying back onto the ground.

The red haired woman barely had a scratch on her, and she even cracked her knuckles as if daring the mugger to try and mug her again. Thankfully, the mugger ran off while holding onto their nose. Kai asked if the woman was alright, and she punched him in the nose.

After a quick explanation about them not being muggers, Skylor apologized and introduced herself. A quick talk later revealed that Skylor had wanted the mugger to try and get her so that she could reverse-mug him, showing off the cash that she had stolen off the guy.

Kai had found that to be hilarious while Koko frowned upon such actions. But quickly, Kai and Skylor began to chat like gasoline being poured on a fire. It ultimately resulted in Kai asking Koko if Skylor could come visit, to which the older woman quickly agreed to.

And if she just so happened to get a professional cook as a daughter, then that was alright. Even if Skylor and Kai started to platonically date.

Notes:

Kai and Skylor's relationship isn't all that serious. They just say that they're dating and maybe go on a few dates here and there.

Chapter 8: Arin & Sora

Summary:

An orphan and runaway, what will they do?

Notes:

Not much to this one, but there's a bit of a timeline jump around so yeah :/

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Arin's parents were tragically killed during a Garmadon attack, leaving him to fend for himself when he was only 7 years old. No one wanted to take in the kid, and for whatever reason Ninjago City hadn't built an orphanage yet despite many promises to do so.

Arin had hung out around the grocery store for a while until he met someone who, similarly to him, didn't have anywhere else to go. Her name was Sora.

Sora still had parents, but they were perfectionist. They wanted her to be the best she could, but not who she wanted to be. They got her a private tutor that shared their ideas and as such, Sora's life became a checklist of meaningless things for her. Wake up, eat her preassigned breakfast, do her work, get lunch, do more studying, have dinner, finish her work, and go to bed.

She rarely had the time to go outside, and when she did it was always with a strict curfew to go back inside. Even if she was finished with her work, she would be "heavily encouraged" to continue studying. But the truth was that she didn't really like anything that they were trying to teach her.

Sure, medical science and cosmology were cool subjects, she's not denying that, but she's always had a patent love for creating technology like all of the great scientific minds before her. She would often use her free time to tinker with small pieces of junk and debris from destroyed Garmadon mechs.

Of course, like how you'd guess, it never truly worked out for everyone involved. She had been caught sneaking out one night and she was told a very harsh lesson; "No one will love you if you can't be a success!"

So Sora took their advice to heart and ran away. She might've felt bad, but the 8 year old didn't have all that much to connect with her biological parents and they were also always at work so there's that. She had wandered around for a while until she met Arin. Somehow, the kid managed to worm his way into her heart just minutes after meeting her.

They agreed to stick together and watch each other's backs, at least until they could get someone else's help. But by the time they were 14, they realized that "help" wasn't going to come anytime soon.

They each got a job. Arin got a job at the bakery and Sora managed to steal a gig at a garage store helping fix up some cars. Combining their money, as well as some loose change, they managed to afford a small apartment that was, by a stroke of luck, close to both of their worksites.

They didn't really have much money for extra stuff though, so they were stuck with rationing their items like it was the apocalypse, which wasn't an unfair comparison given all of the Garmadon attacks. But then, the Ninjas of Ninjago came into town, and everything suddenly started to look up.

There were about 7 of them, each with their own unique color and power. They showed up during one of Garmadon's attacks and actually managed to fend him off with surprising efficiency. It only took a year's worth of efforts before the entire city was practically worshipping them, Arin included.

Sora never really got behind the hype though, she much rather focused on making sure they still had a roof over their head. But, only a month after Arin's 17th birthday, both of their work areas were badly damaged during an invasion. And despite their best efforts, they were unable to scourge up enough money or convince the landlord to let them stay an extra month.

17 and 18 respectively, Arin and Sora had no home.

Koko was proud of her children, but she worried about them every single day. Watching as they piloted mechs and fought an army's worth of people kept her on the verge of a breakdown. She trusted them, of course she did, but she just couldn't help herself.

It didn't help when they would come back with minor bruises or deep cuts from weapons or concussions or-

Her worry almost made her miss the 2 people that suddenly jumped into battle during the current invasion, their identities hidden only with a mask. She had panicked so hard that she thought she was going to have a heart attack! Watching as the person in a normal orange hoodie and a recreation of Lloyd's mask, that were being sold without anyone's permission, performed as strange unfinished form of Spinjitzu.

Or how about the girl in what seemed to be a small mech made from scraps that was just as capable at punching enemy mechs as their own mechs?

After the battle, they easily tracked the 2 individuals down and Wu offered them a place on the team. And once she found out that they were, ironically enough, homeless, Koko simply couldn't help herself except adopt them as well.

Notes:

Sorry if this one seemed a bit rushed, but trust me Wyldfyre's if going to be SUPER short.

Chapter 9: Wyldfyre

Summary:

If only she could be a dragon and fly away.

Notes:

And thus, all of the children have been acquired! All that's left is a simple round up.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Wyldfyre knew that her name wasn't really Wyldfyre, it was actually Stacy Dreward, but she preferred the nickname given to her.

Her family life wasn't all that great, with parents that seemed all too okay with staying away from home for any and all reasons. Her siblings, all 8 of them, would usually gang up on her since she was the youngest of them all. And she wasn't exactly strong either compared to them so it was always an unfair fight.

And it's not like telling her parents helped since they never believed that their "precious babies" could hurt one of their own, though them not being around might've helped with this delusion.

That's why she found comfort with an elderly man out in the woods. They had met on complete accident, but she quickly took a liking to him when he offered her food. She didn't get much of it since she slept outside the family home due to the size of it. She was given the scraps of her sibling's breakfast, lunch, and dinner and was probably only given it because they didn't want to get in trouble.

The old man, who's name was Ignis Flamma, was not like that. He'd hang out at the local pond and Wyldfyre would join him. Once he learnt of her situation, he offered to teach her some self defense in order to protect herself. Reluctant at first, she agreed and became his personal student.

Ignis was surprisingly spry for his age, easily weaving around Wyldfyre's pathetic strikes like a snake. But the more she failed, the angrier she got, and the more determined to win she became. Recognizing that spark of the fire within her, Ignis gave her the nickname of Wyldfyre, given the girl's tendency to strike wildly with fiery ferocity.

By the time she was 17, Wyldfyre was more than capable of fighting and she even squared up against her siblings on the daily, earning a permanently scared lip from the experience. She claimed the area of her sleep as her own and would rarely accept the food her siblings gave her, instead focusing on hunting for food herself.

The oldest of her siblings, Jordana, had finally had enough of Wyldfyre's behavior and had taken a weapon to confront her; A knife. She played dirty and snuck up on her youngest sibling, striking from a bush nearby. But Wyldfyre's heightened fighting senses allowed her to easily overpower Jordana and easily reverse the strike back onto her.

Leaving Jordana with a nasty knife wound, Wyldfyre decided that it would be best for here to leave forever, as it was clear she was unwanted there. Thankfully, she knew of a place that Ignis had mentioned before the elderly man's passing.

So with dreams of her own, Wyldfyre left for Ninjago City.

Koko had heard noises coming from the trashcans as she pulled into the parking lot next to her apartment. She got out of her car and investigated, eventually finding a red haired girl looking through the trash and stuffing some food scraps into a plastic bag. As per usual, her heart demanded her to ask if the girl was alright.

She did not expect that her question would be answered with the girl lunging at her and pinning her down on the ground like an animal. Koko was able to restrain her and, after a long 30 minutes of insults, the girl finally gave a name and a reason as to why she was out there in the dead of night.

It was the same old story for Koko; Bad childhood, ran away from home, living by themself for a few years, ended up meeting Koko on pure accident. Although, at this point she's wondering if it even IS an accident or if the universe was trying to screw with her. Well, she'll play along with it for a little while.

So, as per usual, she offered the girl a place to stay, and she accepted.... Yeah, it was surprisingly easy to be honest.

Notes:

Ignas Flamma is Latin for "Fire" and "Flame" by the way.

Chapter 10: Koko PT2

Now we move to the present, and what lies ahead in the future.

Once again, Koko is 100000000000000000000000000% x Infinity times better than Misako.

Chapter Text

Koko knew her family was strange, everyone in the city knew her family was strange. But they never understood that it ran a bit deeper than that. No one knew that they were the Ninjas of Ninjago, that they had powers and cool mechs, that they were once all orphans to the world, or that they were all brought together by one woman.

All 11 of her children were unique in their own ways. From being overprotective to tech savvy to musically adapt to being a good cook to sometimes violent to even being robotic people, (Because Zane and Pixal ARE humans, just with a robotic shell.) And yet she loved them all the same.

When Wu had approached her after years on not knowing each others, he had seen her uncomfortable living situation and had offered to help her. And then the old man met her children and realized that they had an elemental spark in them, which meant that they could harness the power of specific elements that made their world.

Wu wanted them to help with the fight against Garmadon, but he did not want to force anyone to join if they didn't wish to. Although some were reluctant, everyone eventually agreed to join. Lloyd was probably the most willing, given how it would give him the ability to take out his frustrations of his dad on the man himself.

Wu even allowed them to set up a second home of sorts in his hideout, which was a large run-down warehouse at the coast of Ninjago City bay. It didn't take long before they were building mechs and learning Spinjitzu.

Koko had been sad at first, not wanting to let her children leave, but she was happy for them nonetheless. Thankfully, even after years worth of being ninjas, they never forgot who took them in.

Sleep overs at her apartment, her NEW apartment that Wu managed to get her, were a frequent occurrence. Sometimes she'd wake up to find one of them just in the living room chilling out with some others.

And she accepted this. She was so proud of them for coming into their own. She encouraged them to be themselves, now knowing that they all had each other when she couldn't be there. She supported their decision to be ninjas full time. She accepted Jay when he came out as Bi and asked Cole out. She was ecstatic when Nya started applying to an online college.

But out of them all, she made sure to be supportive of Lloyd the most. He dealt with so much, and suddenly he's got an entire family that backed him up for just being himself. They didn't see "La-Loyd Montgomery Garmadon, son of the evil dictator Garmadon and thus he's also evil," but rather they saw "Lloyd, the Green Ninja, and the best little brother they could ask for!"

Koko made sure to cook them all hot meals when they visited, even if they offered to do it themselves. Even if they got embarrassed by her motherly actions towards them, she never stopped mentioning how much she loved them.

Because, while she may have started with 1 son and a broken marriage, she now had 11 wonderful kids and a loving family.

And that was more than enough for her, even if she did sometimes wonder if Garmadon could've made a good dad.

Notes:

And that's all folks!

Now we've just got a bonus chapter and a character bio left!

Chapter 11: BONUS: Wu & Garmadon

Summary:

The story of 2 brothers who fell apart.

Notes:

This is kind of a mix between canon Ninjago and Movie Ninjago lore.

Also, this is the last "real" chapter of this fic. The next chapter will focus on character details and all of that junk.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Over the millennia that the world has existed, there were many people who sought to control what they could not. They wanted to control the very ground beneath them, the air they breathed, the tools of creation themselves and then-some. But, just about everyone has failed in this task.

All except one. No one knew of his name, but legends refer to him as the First Spinjitzu Master, or FSM for short. This man, blessed with blood that mixed light and dark, was able to harness the elements of the world in the form of Spinjitzu, a technique that engulfed the user with an element in the form of a spinning tornado.

Naturally, many people sought to replicate the FSM's success, which led rise to other forms of martial arts such as Airjitzu. But none of them were able to completely copy the legend's mastery over the world, which even included his own life span. Yep, he mastered life and death itself....

But, he did not get this without punishment. From a vision in his sleep, he was told that he would have 2 children, one born from the light and the other from the dark. The light child and dark child would start a never ending war in the realm that would come to be known as Ninjago.

And so, long before time had a name, the FSM helped found Ninjago and he alone created the 4 Golden Weapons, infused with the elemental powers for people to use. However, only a year after their forging, the weapons had begun to corrupt the minds of the people who wanted all of the power for themselves.

Wars broke out for the elements, eventually causing the FSM to retract his gift and decide to avoid condemning the world to endless war by simply never having any children. But, even though by that point he was a few hundred years old, not even he was able to avoid life's gripe with him.

Multiple stories tell what happened; He got drunk and in a fluke he got someone pregnant. He genuinely loved someone and started a family. He simply found them one day. Or even that the children manifested into existence out of thin air. Not one answer was right, but none were disproven.

However they came to be, Wu and Montgomery were now children and yet they showed no signs of light or darkness. Thinking that it must've been an empty threat, the FSM went on to teach his children the art of Spinjitzu and how to harness the elements, even if Wu did it better than Montgomery.

But fate, as the FSM soon came to learn, was cruel. One day he had found Montgomery to have been bitten by the Great Devourer, an extremely rare type of snake that was supposed to only exist in the Underworld. Its venom was said to have been created and cursed by death, corrupting the afflicted person into becoming a monster.

Realizing what was happening, the FSM gave strict warnings to his children, but he did not stay around long enough to enforce them. He soon found that life and death had finally come to collect him, and he went willingly.

Now left with each other, Wu could only watch in dismay at how his brother's soul slowly began to darken and corrupt. It started small, with him being more aggressive and cruel to plants and animals. Then it shifted to other people, and then it started to become like a game to him.

Finally, when both boys reached adulthood, Montgomery made a move that would define his path forever. While Wu was able to control most of the elements his father could, Montgomery had no such privilege. But he decided to go after the Golden Weapons that their father had left behind, proclaiming that they should use their power to claim the world as their own.

Wu disagreed, and soon a battle ensued. It didn't last too long, and Wu had to banish his own brother who had decided to change his name to Garmadon, just because it sounded "cool."  In response, Garmadon unleashed a hidden power within him, the power of darkness, and destroyed their father's home.

By this point, you probably know the rest. Wu hid the weapons away on a hidden island, Garmadon became a war conqueror, Garmadon got married and had a son, lost both of them, declared war on Ninjago City, and Wu became the protector of the city along side his most trusted allies.

But they were old and didn't have the same ageing rate that Wu had, so one by one they slowly passed on. Soon, it was only Wu fending off his brother's attempts at destroying the city.

But, when he finally found out where his sister-in-law lived and saw the elemental potential that her children had, he found himself hoping for a brighter tomorrow a little less. Because now it seemed a bit more possible.
