Work Text:
Viren wasn’t happy about Aaravos declaring himself the big spoon. One look at his horns quelled any argument, but Viren had curled into their shared bedroll with endearing grumbles about Aaravos being too tall.
“I don’t think you mind too much.” Aaravos murmured directly into Viren’s ear as he snuggled up to Viren. As planned, he could see the blush trying to rise on Viren’s face. Viren let himself be held, their legs tangling together at the knee and ankle, their shared space already warm between them.
Viren dozed off first, his hand over the one Aaravos had around him. Aaravos suddenly realized he hadn’t cuddled for centuries, and even Viren’s hand over his was enough to make him pause.
It had been so long.
Every point of contact between them was warm, almost hot. The sleeping bag kept them close like they were in a cocoon together. The rise and fall of Viren’s chest in time with slow breathing made Aaravos more intimately aware of being free and alive again than even being outside in fresh air had.
It was so simple. In another situation, it would’ve been nothing. He’d had no shortage of potential lovers before.
Yet this was special. He took in Viren’s heartbeat so close to his own. He memorized how Viren’s hair looked from the back, where natural greys were beginning to shine through. Mages had a reputation for being frail to some, yet Viren had his share of muscle though his shoulders and biceps. Aaravos took in everything, fighting off sleep for fear of wasting time he needed to catch up on the simple act of being touched.
“Go to sleep.”
Ah. Viren hadn’t been asleep yet. Aaravos nosed his hair. “What gave me away?” Even a simple inquiry was low and rich in his tone.
“Your heart is pounding. Just breathe.” Viren yawned. Then, gentler, “I’ll be here in the morning.”
Without even looking at him, Viren had seen through him. Aaravos knew it was nonsensical but dreaded the idea that this was some dream, that he might wake up back in his prison. He gave Viren a squeeze around his waist, a final hug before sinking into the comfortable warmth between them.
He couldn’t make up for 300 years of isolation at once. That was okay.
