Chapter 1: September 19th, 1991
Chapter Text

September 19th, 1991
Hermione sat in the Great Hall with a book she checked out from the library for a bit of light reading. The boys, Harry and Ron, made fun of her when she first walked up to their table during breakfast. They basically said she was a know-it-all and told her she would have more friends if she would just keep her nose out of a book. She told them she quite enjoyed reading and learning new things. They just laughed at her and continued having a conversation by themselves.
Hermione wanted to tell them it was her birthday. She wanted to shout it through the Great Hall, but she didn’t. They had already made fun of her for reading, she wasn’t going to let them make fun of her birthday as well. So, she kept her mouth shut and celebrated her day all alone.
Later that night she used her pillow to muffle her cries. No one had wished her a happy birthday because no one knew. Her parents couldn’t send her anything because they weren’t sure about the owl-post yet. Hermione just lay there with her arms wrapped around herself and quietly sang “happy birthday to you…” as she drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, she didn’t bring a book to breakfast. She thought maybe if she gave the boys a bit more attention they wouldn’t tease her. She could read in secret. As she sat down at their table the only remark made was from Ron who said ‘about time you have your nose out of a book’ then carried on talking. They actually included her in their conversation unlike the day before.
Just then a beautiful white great horned owl swooped down and dropped a package and a note for her. The note was addressed:
TOP SECRET
For: Hermione Granger
ONLY
She looked around and everyone at the Gryffindor table was staring at her.
“Well hurry up and open the bloody thing so we can see what it is!” Ron spoke as if he was agitated that she was taking too long.
She stuck her nose up in the air and stood up.
“Did you send it?” She asked as she gathered her things.
“Why the bloody hell would I send you something?” He laughed.
“Why indeed.” She said, then turned around and headed towards the library for some space. She could hear the boys shouting for her to come back but paid them no mind.
Once she was back in her favorite spot, she tore open the letter.
Hermione Granger,
Hello, I’m a fellow classmate of yours. I don’t know if you remember but before the train arrived there were a few of us already there waiting. You told us your birthday was September 19th and that it was your favorite day of the year. I was completely surprised that none of your friends wished you a happy birthday yesterday. Did they forget? Or do they not know? Regardless, I watched you the rest of the day because you seemed sad. I thought surely someone would tell you, but to my knowledge no one did. When I watched you retire to your dorms you looked like you wanted to cry. I was very sad for you. Especially since it was supposed to be your favorite day.
I noticed you always have a book with you so I thought I would make you a little bookmark birthday present. I hand painted it myself! It was the best I could do last minute, maybe next year I’ll get you a better gift. I hope this gift brings a smile to your face today even though it’s a day late.
Happy Birthday Hermione Granger!!!
I hope your future birthdays are better than this one!
~A stranger who knows your birthday.
PS. Under no circumstances are you to share your present with anyone .
Especially if they didn’t wish you a happy birthday.
Hermione’s head ran wild trying and failing to remember who all she talked to. Specifically, who she told about her birthday. Getting even more excited she opened the package. Sure enough, there sat the hand painted bookmark. It was red and yellow striped with a golden lion in the center. In the top left and bottom right, it had a personalized HG written on it. The back had the inscription ‘September 19th, the best day of the year’. There was also a packet of sugar quills with a note attached.
I meant what I said Granger, no sharing!
These are all for you. I didn’t know which was your favorite, so I got a variety pack.
Happy Birthday Granger!
~ Wouldn’t you like to know.
Draco watched her. He was on the other side of the bookshelf and was peeking through some books. He was glad he followed her to the library to watch her open his gift. He grinned as she sorted through the sugar quills and picked an apple one. It was his favorite as well.
Draco couldn’t help but notice she was just a regular kid like he was. She didn’t look any different. He knew she was muggle born and his father had always told him that purebloods were the best. But every time he asked why his father always said, 'because we are'. It made no sense, but he wanted to please his father and get in his good graces. Make him proud. So, he would have to keep her a secret.
“Thank you, mystery friend.” He heard her whisper aloud as she wiped a tear away.
“Happy Birthday Granger.” He whispered back.
Chapter 2: September 19, 1992
Chapter Text
September 19, 1992
Hermione decided this year she was going to tell her friends it was her birthday. They were her friends after all weren’t they? Yes, Ron mostly talked to her because he wanted to copy her notes. They both equally voiced how annoying she was for constantly answering questions in class. But isn’t that what you are supposed to do when you know the answer? She was just trying to be a good witch. It was all still new to her.
Hermione took a deep breath and walked into the Great Hall with confidence.
“I can do this. Just walk up to them and say, ‘Hey did you know today is my birthday?’ You got this Hermione.” She told herself.
When she sat down at the table no one acknowledged her. She cleared her throat. Still nothing.
The boys were all huddled together talking.
“Hey guys…”
Ron glared at her. “Shh!”
She glared back. “What are you talking about?”
Ron huffed and rolled his eyes.
Harry looked up and offered a one-word answer. “Quidditch.”
The Post came flying in moments later. Owls soared all around the tables dropping off packages and letters.
Hermione smiled up at them remembering last year's mystery friend. She wondered how they were doing.
“Expecting something?” Ron asked.
Oh, now he wanted to talk to her. just as she was fixing to say none of his business, she spotted it. The same beautiful white great horned owl swooped down and dropped a letter and package in front of her.
She picked them both up along with her other things and started to leave.
“Hey! What’s wrong with you? Going to just take your package and leave?” Ron sneered.
“As a matter of fact, I am. Don’t you two have a conversation to get back to anyways?”
She then swished her curly hair around and walked out of the great hall.
Hermione Granger,
Hey stranger… Well technically I know who you are, you just don’t know me. Another year has passed, and you are one year older! I’m sending this to you, so you get it on your actual birthday. I hope your friends remember this year or if they don’t I hope you remind them.
I noticed you're using the bookmark I painted for you. I feel honored. This year I had a little more time to think about what I wanted to get you. I notice in class you take very good notes. I also noted how many times you got frustrated when your quill broke, or your ink well went dry from all the excessive note taking you do. Not poking fun, just stating facts. These revelations led me to the perfect gift for you. It’s very special so make sure to read the note I added with it. I hope you don’t find this creepy, but I also noticed you ate all of the apple sugar quills first. I hope that means they are your favorite, because they are my favorite as well.
I hope my note and gift brought a smile to your face and helped you have a great day.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HERMIONE GRANGER!!!
I’m sorry I haven’t actually reached out to you. I know you are just dying to find out who I am.
~ Your Mystery Friend
PS. This should go without saying but do not share your gift with ANYONE.
Before she opened this year's present, she took out her bookmark and admired it for a moment. Then she set it on the table and picked up the green box that had a silver bow attached. Hermione pulled the ends of the bow and untied the ribbon from the box. She used it to tie her hair up in a ponytail. She hoped whoever her secret friend was would see it and know just how much she appreciated the effort. When she lifted the lid there was a pack of apple sugar quills on top. She smiled. Her friend guessed right; apple was her favorite.
Under the sweets she found the most exquisite quill and ink set. Hermione picked up the quill and twirled it around between her first finger and thumb. The feather was white but if the light caught it just right you could see sparkles. The ink bottle was just as nice, the liquid inside shimmered.
Hermione peeked inside the box to find the note her letter spoke about. It just so happened to be attached to a small sachet. Upon closer inspection the sachet had spare nibs for the quill.
Granger,
This set is the best quill and ink set you will ever have. How do I know that? Because the quill will never break, the nibs are charmed to always stay sharp and the ink will never run out. No, I am not kidding. The extra nibs it came with are to make the ink different colors. You are smart so you could probably guess this without me telling you but the initial on the nib tells the color. B: Black, BL: Blue, R: Red, & G: Green. Just attach whichever color nib you want and dip in ink. Simple. Don’t worry about this being too much. I just told my parents that I lost mine on the train. To be fair I did but found it before I got off. Hope this makes your note taking less frustrating and more enjoyable!
Happy Birthday Granger
~ Your Secret Friend
PS. Please do not let anyone borrow your shiny new quill or ink.
Draco watched disillusioned in a corner as Hermione used her ink and quill set for the first time. Once she was finished, she folded a piece of paper and sat a sugar quill on top of it in the middle of the table.
Draco smiled and shook his head. Of course, she was going to try and share her gift with him.
She packed up her belongings and stood up to leave. Just as Draco was going to walk forward and quickly snatch the note, he saw her disillusioned herself and stood in the opposite corner from him.
The cheeky girl was going to wait to see who picked up the letter.
They both stood there for what felt like ages but was only minutes he was certain. There was no way the swot would miss a class just to find out who he was.
Draco watched as the numbers 8:15 glowed from the corner she stood in. He figured she must have checked the time with her wand.
He heard her huff before she reappeared with a frown on her face. Then she stomped back to the table, swiped up the apple sugar quill, and stormed off.
Draco almost let out a sigh, but she came running back, placed the sugar quill back where she had it and ran to her first class.
Convinced she’s finally left, Draco canceled the disillusionment, grabbed the note and sweet then ducked down a few rows just to be safe so he could read the note.
Mystery Friend,
Thank you so much for my gift last year and this year. I would very much like to tell you in person. Is there a way we could meet? Or maybe find a way to pass each other notes? I would like to be your true friend. Can I at least know your name?
Truly you have made my day feel so special. I hope this note gets to the right person.
~Your friend HG
There was no way Draco could let Granger know who he was. He had a part to play in his family. He had to be mean to her; she was a muggle born. He would have to call her that name one day, his friends expected it. They would report back to his father if he didn’t. Draco dreaded the day he would have to make her cry.
He crumbled up the note and shoved it in his pocket as he left the library. No, there was no way she could know who he was.
Chapter 3: September 19, 1993
Chapter Text
September 19, 1993
Hermione yawned as she woke up on her special day. Instead of immediately getting up she lay there and remembered past birthdays she would spend at home before she found out she was a witch.
One year her mom filled her whole bedroom with balloons so she would be surprised when she woke up.
Another year her parents woke her up with a water gun fight.
The year before she started Hogwarts she woke up to a scavenger hunt. She had to follow clues to find where all of her birthday gifts were hidden.
Her birthdays were so much fun before she found out she was a witch. Every single birthday always ended with a birthday cake lit with candles, ice cream and a song being sung to her.
Hermione smiled at the memories.
When she sat up she noticed a small cupcake with a candle on top sitting on her trunk at the foot of the bed. She looked around and all of her dormmates were already gone.
She grabbed the plate and saw a note folded on the side.
.
Hermione,
Good morning & Happy birthday!
~Your mystery friend.
She smiled and had an idea. She transfigured a box and set the cupcake in it then leapt off her bed to get dressed.
Her plan was to take the cupcake to the great hall with her and light the candle before blowing it out. If Harry and Ron didn’t take the hint, then… well they were idiots.
Hermione’s face dropped as soon as she entered the Great Hall. The Gryffindor table looked very sparse. The whole Great Hall did. Harry and Ron were nowhere to be found.
She sighed, sat down and took her cupcake out of the box. She debated on even lighting the candle. She was the only one that was going to see it. But it was her birthday and she deserved to be happy. So she sat up straighter and with a swish of her wand she lit the candle.
The small lit pastry filled her with so much joy. Hermione held it up in front of her face smiling. Right before she was going to blow out the candle someone caught her eye. Was that Malfoy smiling? She cocked her head to the side and looked at him. As quick as she saw the smile it was gone, replaced by a frown. She shook her head. Because of course he wasn’t smiling, Malfoy didn’t smile, he only smirked and frowned with his stupid beautiful mouth. She stuck her tongue out at him. He smirked back at her. Hermione shook her head, closed her eyes, made a wish and blew out her candle. When she opened them the smoke from the candle transformed into the words. ‘Happy Birthday Granger!’ The smoke trailed above the cup cake for a few long seconds then disappeared.
Hermione had half of her cupcake eaten by the time the post was to be delivered. Owls came flying in one after another dropping packages to the few people left in the Great Hall. She watched patiently looking for the gorgeous white owl. When the last owl left without dropping anything for her, she couldn’t help but feel crushed. Hermione looked down at her hands fidgeting trying to keep her composure. She didn’t know why she was so upset. Her mysterious friend never said they would send something every year. She didn’t even know who they were.
Hermione didn’t notice she was crying until she heard his voice.
“Granger, isn’t there some saying about not crying on your birthday or some shit?”
Hermione wiped at her face furiously. Gods why did he have to be the one to catch her crying?
“What do you want, Malfoy?” She snapped.
When she finally looked up at him, all she could see was kindness in his eyes.
He dropped a package and a letter in front of her.
“For some reason a bloody owl dropped these in front of me. Did you happen to get my package?”
Tears pricked Hermione’s eyes again. She had gotten a package after all. It was just delivered to the wrong person. She touched it tentatively making sure it was real. Her face lit up.
“Uh Granger? I asked you a question?”
“Sorry, I just thought they forgot.” She said in a whisper.
He lifted an eyebrow. “You have a boyfriend somewhere out there?”
She frowned. “It’s none of your business Malfoy, but no they are just my… friend.” She snapped at him.
Then she stood up and gathered her things. She debated on taking the other half of the cupcake with her. She thought about asking Malfoy if he wanted it but there was no way he would eat something after a…
“Can I have the rest of it?” He asked.
Hermione looked up eyeing him. Trying to figure him out. Why was he even still there? He should have left already or made fun of her. This Malfoy, nice Malfoy, scared her more than the bully Malfoy. This Malfoy, she was afraid she was starting to like.
Hermione sighed she couldn’t be bothered with him; she wanted to open her only gift and letter.
“Be my guest.” She finally said, rolling her eye, walking away from her blond bully.
She couldn’t stand not knowing what her gift was this year, especially after thinking she would get nothing. So, on her way to the library, she tore off the wrapping. When she saw what it was her mouth dropped open, hands caressed the front of the bound journal.
Hermione heard a whistle behind her.
“A dragonhide bound journal. Those things cost a pretty penny.”
She jumped. “Geez Malfoy you scared me! Why are you following me?”
“Quite presumptuous of you to think that. There happens to be only one way out of the great hall.” He rolled his eyes.
Hermione’s face turned red. She was glad he was behind her and couldn't see.
Draco didn’t know why he strayed from the routine of the past 2 years. Why the bloody hell he thought he had the courage to give it to her himself. When he saw how crushed her face was, he quickly thought of an excuse and practically ran over to the bloody Gryffindor table. He was thankful not many people were in the great hall that day. Everyone was out at the pitch watching a practice match.
“I’m actually off to see if the quidditch match is still going. You have a good birthday, Granger.”
Draco tried to walk around her, but she grabbed his arm. His breath hitched and he stared at the spot her hand was grabbing.
“What did you just say?”
He looked up at her. “I’m going to see if the match is still going?” He feigned knowing what she was talking about.
“Not that.”
“I said, Have a good birthday, Granger. Why?”
She squeezed his arm.
“How did you know it was my birthday?”
He could see hope in her eyes. Hope that she found out who her special friend was. He was sad he was about to crush it.
“Granger, you got a package, with a dragonhide journal.”
She shook her head. “That could have been for anything...”
He interrupted her. “You didn’t let me finish. Not only that but you had a cupcake with a candle on top. Once you blew it out, the ‘Happy Birthday Granger' smoke kind of gave it away.”
She looked at him searching his face for the lie. She wouldn’t find one.
“Why are you following me? Being nice to me?”
Fuck. He couldn’t be mean to her on her birthday of all days. Her idiot friends had that covered. But if he didn’t say something she would know something was up.
“Look Granger, I was delivered your package. I could have opened it or thrown it away, but I didn't. I came and gave it to you as soon as I saw it had your name on it. And the thanks I get is you accusing me that I’m following you?”
She sighed. “You're right, Malfoy, I’m sorry. You’re just out of character today.”
“Consider it a birthday present. I swear to be a prat to you tomorrow."
She smiled at him. He had made her smile. His heart started racing.
“Right, so if you will let me go.” He eyed her hand on his arm. “As I said earlier, I'm heading to the pitch now.” He glanced back up at her face and her cheeks were pink.
“Oh, I’m sorry!” She let go and it kind of made his heart ache. What the fuck was going on? He could NOT be feeling these feelings.
He turned to get out of there because they had been standing together for way too long and people were going to start talking.
“Malfoy, wait.”
He sighed and turned to face her again. She was digging around in her package until she found what she was looking for.
She handed him a sugar quill.
He lifted an eyebrow at her. “You’re sharing your gift?”
“It’s only fair. I wouldn’t have it had you not given it to me. Plus, I think my friend would approve. They said not to share with people especially if they didn’t say happy birthday. Well, you told me happy birthday. So, yea.”
Draco looked behind her. “Fuck, the Weasel and scar head are coming. That’s my que to leave. Happy birthday Granger. And uh thanks for the sweet. Apple is my favorite also.”
He turned around and went in the opposite direction her idiot friends came from.
Later that night he tossed and turned wondering how she felt after reading his letter. He wanted to regret not having his owl deliver her the gift, but then he wouldn’t have gotten any interaction with her. Plus, he had the privilege of telling her happy birthday in person.
Draco rolled over into his back and stared at the ceiling remembering all the words he had written.
Granger,
First you should know I almost told you who I was earlier this year. You had been petrified and I nearly lost my shit. I visited you in the hospital daily. I was disillusioned most of the time so your idiot friends wouldn’t see me. I sat by your bed at night and held your hand. I wrote many notes that I was going to leave with you but was too scared. I didn’t want them to be found by one of your friends. The day that I came in the hospital, and you weren’t there anymore I panicked. I actually yelled at Pomfrey and demanded to know where you were. She looked at me like I was a bloody fool. Realizing I had no right to know any information I turned to leave when she said you had been fully healed and was back in your dorm. I was so relieved.
Look I would like nothing more to let you know who I am but it’s complicated. There is a reason I can’t. Maybe one day I will have enough courage too but for now this is all you get from me. I hope that’s ok, and you aren’t too disappointed.
Before I get to the real reason for this package, I need to say something else. If you ever get made fun of, please don’t take it to heart. Sometimes people say things they don’t really mean. Sometimes they are forced to say nasty things to brilliant people. I’m sorry if this happens to you. Truly I am.
Now what you have been patiently waiting for…
I would like to be the first and hopefully not only to say...
Happy Birthday Hermione Granger!
I do hope you have an amazing day today. You deserve it. I must say you were sneaky leaving that note last year on the table. Thank you for the sugar quill but I must ask you to not leave a note like that in a random place again. You never know who will find it.
If you haven’t opened your gift yet, pause here and open it because I’m fixing to spoil it so I can explain why I chose what I did.
Have you opened it? Good! I know Dragonhide journals are expensive so let me tell you why I picked it. These journals come pre-spelled for privacy. Even if someone were looking over your shoulder as you write in it, they will never know it's true contents. You said you wanted a way to speak to me and I figure a journal is the second best. Don’t go getting any ideas. No, it isn’t a two-way journal. We will not be communicating through it. You could pretend you're writing to me and maybe one day when/if I get the courage to tell you who I am you can share them with me.
Happy Birthday My Special Friend.
~Someone who cares.
PS. I hope you enjoyed your cupcake and candle. I’m sorry it took me so long to think of the fact you didn’t get a birthday cake.
Draco sat up and dug through his trunk. He swore he was going to wait until the next day to check it. It was as close to 12 he was going to wait!
He found the black dragonhide book that was identical to Grangers and opened it to the first page. She had used it already.
Sept 19,
Dear Special friend,
I am still processing your letter. You held my hand? It’s so unfair that you know me, but I don’t know you. I have more to say on that but like I said I'm still processing. I wanted to have my first entry to let you know how my birthday went so here goes.
First the owl you sent this year's gift with, dropped into the wrong person. This person just so happens to be my bully… or I thought he was? He was extremely kind to me today. I think we spoke more today than we have the entire two years we have been at school together.
He called me a really bad name last year, but I could tell when he said it, he didn’t mean it. It was his eyes. You can always tell someone's intentions in their eyes.
Anyway, for a second, I thought he was you! He wished me a happy birthday! Turns out he saw my cupcake and me blow out the candle. It was nice having him tell me happy birthday. What’s crazy is I think it meant more that he told me then it would have Ron or Harry told me. They still don’t know. I’m kind of angry and sad because they should have noticed. We celebrate their birthdays but never mine.
Oh, before I forget I must tell you I did give Malfoy (my bully? Classmate?) a sugar quill. He did give me my package and told me happy birthday, so I feel like I owed him.
All In all, it was a great birthday because of you and him. Thank you so much for my gift. I will definitely be back once I process everything else you said in your letter and tell you, my thoughts.
Your friend
HG
Chapter 4: September 19, 1994
Chapter Text
September 19, 1994
Sept 19th
Dear Special friend,
Today is my birthday!!! But you already know that! I am so excited to go down to the great hall. Hopefully my package doesn’t get mixed up again. Not that you have to send me a package at all. You could just send me a letter and I’d absolutely be thrilled. I don’t think I’m going to tell the boys it’s my birthday. If they figure it out that’s fine but I feel like they should have asked already. I’m fine with just you knowing… well you and Malfoy. Although he probably doesn’t even remember.
Will update on how my day went tonight!
Hermione put her journal under her pillow. She packed up her ink and quill set then got ready for the day. She was a little excited when she got down to the common room. The boys were waiting for her to go to the Great Hall. She thought maybe they figured it out, but that idea was quickly dismissed when Ron opened his mouth.
“It’s about time you got down here. I need your notes before we go to history of magic class today. Unless you want me to fail the test.”
He always did that. Made it seem like it was going to be her fault that he didn’t pass.
“How is it my fault you didn’t take proper notes the first time Ronald?” She turned on her heel and swished her curls in his face.
Unfortunately, the boys followed behind her and Ron complained the whole way down. They had almost reached the bottom step when she had enough. She stopped, turned around, and pointed at him in the chest.
“Ronald Weasley, if you would learn how to apply yourself you wouldn’t need my notes. Walking behind me muttering about how insufferable I am isn’t making a good case as to why I should let you borrow them.”
Ron rushed past her, making her drop her books. A few things happened that she didn’t expect: first Harry ran after Ron without even helping Hermione. Then when she went to pick up her books Malfoy had already gathered them up. He handed them to her.
“Maybe you should wish for a new set of friends this year.” He said.
Hermione was confused. “I don’t understand.”
“It's what you do when you blow out your candles right? Make a wish. It’s what I would do if my friends acted like that towards me on my birthday.”
All Hermione could do was stand there and star at him. Did he just admit to remembering her birthday?
He fished something out of his pocket and set it on top of her stack of books. Then he nudged her mouth closed and whispered in her ear.
“Happy birthday Granger.” He turned around and left.
Hermione’s heart was beating so fast it took her a moment to realize she should probably be heading to the Great Hall. She turned to go and remembered he set something on her books, when she looked down it was a sugar quill and a chocolate frog. She pinched herself to see if she was dreaming.
Hermione sat at the end of the Gryffindor table that morning. She really had nothing to say to Ron or Harry.
When the post came flying through. The beautiful white great horned owl was the first one to swoop in and dropped her package.
Out of the corner of her eye she could tell the Gryffindor’s down the table were curious as to what she got. She also noticed she had a certain blond boy’s attention as well. So instead of running and hiding she decided to open her letter and gift there instead.
Granger,
Why? Why haven’t you told anyone? I’ve randomly asked around to see if anyone knew when your birthday was, and no one has a clue. How can that be true? I’m so angry at you for not making those two idiots you call friends celebrate you! Hell, I’m angry at them for not even realizing they don’t know it!
I’m sorry, let me start over.
Hermione Granger,
Today is your birthday. I’ll try and not stay cross with you for the rest of this letter. Consider that an extra gift. Can you believe it’s been 4 years, and you still haven’t figured out who I am yet. I know that big brain of yours has been trying to compare my handwriting to your classmates. But as you also figured out, the handwriting on each letter isn't quite the same. You know there is this thing called magic that makes it easy to alter? Clever, if I do say so myself. Anyway…
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HERMIONE GRANGER
I do hope you change your mind and tell someone about your birthday. I kind of wish I could tell you in person, but this is also kind of fun yea? Enjoy your gift!
~Mystery Friend
Hermione turned her attention to the gift. It had a green ribbon tied around it this year. She frowned at it because it wasn’t just any green. It was Slytherin green. Could her friend be a Slytherin? Surely not. And what would her friends say if she tied up her hair with this ribbon? She glanced down the table, they didn’t look like they were paying attention to her. When she glanced across the way at the Slytherins they all looked bored. Except Malfoy. He looked like whatever he was reading was about to make him burst out laughing.
All of her attention went back to her gift. She tugged each strand and untied the bow. Then took a deep breath and tired her hair up. When the paper fell open to reveal what the package was she gasped out loud. It was a rare first edition copy of Hogwarts: A History by Bathilda Bagshot. Hermione slid her fingers delicately over the gold foiled title. How did her friend get ahold of such a precious book? Even Hogwarts’ copy wasn’t as pristine as the one she was holding. When she opened the book and got to the dedication page she closed it immediately, gathered all of her things and headed straight for her private spot in the library.
She sat down carefully and took the book out of her bag and opened it back up. Sure enough the words were still there. Tears spilled down Hermione’s cheeks as she touched the page to make sure it was real.
Hermione Granger,
I heard from a dear friend that this is your favorite book. I am so honored you hold it in such high regards.
If I could give you one advice it would be this: never let someone shame, you for loving to read.
Reading leads to knowledge and knowledge is power.
Happy Birthday Sweet Girl
~Bathilda Bagshot
The rest of the package had her yearly apple flavored sugar quills and a smaller note.
Surprised Granger?
I’ve seen you carry around your copy of Hogwarts: A History for 4 years now. I figured it was time I got you a proper copy. This one was spelled by Mrs. Bagshot herself to stay in pristine condition.
One more surprise will be left on your bed tonight.
Oh, and before I forget did you know your cat likes to play fetch? He was hanging around me one night, so I transfigured a leaf into a mouse and threw it. He ran after it and brought it back to me. I played with him for what seemed like hours. I have no idea what his name is, but I call him Sir. Hairballs because he leaves balls of orange hair everywhere.
Happy Birthday Granger!
~ Gift giver extraordinaire
After a long amazing emotional day Hermione took out her journal and finished her entry.
I can’t believe you got THE Bathilda Bagshot to sign my book AND to basically tell me Happy birthday! Have I ever told you that you were amazing? Because you are. Whoever you are, you are so kind and thoughtful. Each gift you have given me has meant so much. Thank you thank you thank you! I really hope I get to return the favor one day.
Crookshanks says hello, my cat. Well, he’s half kneazel. If he likes you that means you are a good person. Kneazels will only ever interact with people who have good intentions. It kind of explains why he only ever growls and hisses at Ron.
Thank you for my chocolate cupcake again. It was a nice treat to end my day with. I actually just ate the last bite.
I really hope I get to meet you or get more than just one note a year from you someday.
Your friend
~HG
Darco closed the journal as the letters HG appeared and put it back in his trunk. He was so tempted to write back in it telling her he was glad she had an amazing day. Because he lied to her it was a two-way journal. If he really wanted too, he could reach out to her and talk to her. But it would just make things more complicated. Once a year was enough… it had to be.
With a sigh Darco tried his best to sleep remembering the smile he put on the curly haired girl's face that he was starting to really fancy.

Sept 19th
Dear Friend,
Another year has passed, and I still can’t put my finger on who you might be. Do you have brown hair or blond hair? Green eyes or blue? Are you in my house? I’m assuming you are a guy as you said you held my hand (which I still can’t believe I was that close to you). I guess you could be a girl and hold my hand too now that I think about it. I'm at a loss, friend. I really and truly want to get to know you but know nothing. It’s really frustrating. I wonder what would happen if I just didn’t go to the Great Hall today. What if I just stayed in my room all day? Nobody else cares what today is and the one person that does won’t even let me know who they are.
Hermione slammed the journal shut and shoved it under her pillow. She wiped the tears that are running down her face and got ready for the day. She was not going to stay in bed not when the only thing that made her happy on her birthday might be waiting for her.
She was halfway down the stairs when she got a tap on her shoulder. She looked back and rolled her eyes.
“What do you want, Malfoy?”
“Oh ho! Wake up on the wrong side of bed today?”
“Don’t worry about what side of the bed I sleep on, Malfoy. I’m still pissed at you for what you did to my teeth.”
“And I told you I wasn’t aiming it at you, I was aiming at weaselbee.”
“Like that’s any better.”
“Oh, come on, I’m sorry ok.”
Hermione stopped when she got to the bottom and turned around with her hands on her waist.
“What do you want Malfoy?”
“Geez, just to say happy birthday and to give you this.” He handed her a sugar quill and a chocolate frog.
She took them frowning and confused.
Then Malfoy side stepped her and continued on into the Great Hall.
“Ugh! That boy is going to give me whiplash with how he acts towards me.” She said out loud for no one in particular.
Breakfast went as normal, and it could. The boys in their own world talking and Hermione’s nose in her book when the post came. The white horned owl was front and center.
He dropped a long thin package and another small square package along with her note. Having a small clue what might be in the long package she packed up her things and told the boys she needed to take more notes for potions glass. They waved her off saying they would see her after lunch in potions.
Hermione was glad she didn’t have to rush off to classes that morning because she knew when she opened the lid to the box something was going to change. She didn’t know what was going to change or what it met.
She untied the red bow, tied it in her hair, and read the letter.
Happy Birthday Sweet Girl,
Can I call you that? Sweet girl? I owe you an apology. I’m sorry I still don’t have the courage to tell you who I am.
I know 16 is a milestone age for girls in the muggle world. Since you are muggle born, I wanted to get you something special. You can probably already tell by the box that it's jewelry and are thinking of a million different ways to not accept this gift. What if i told you it came with an incentive?
I have included a piece of parchment with a few facts about me. The only way to be able to see these facts is to activate it by wearing the jewelry.
Sneaky, aren't I? Now, this parchment doesn't include enough to tell you who I am, but more information than you have now.
I know what you’re thinking, but jewelry cost too much. What if i told you I actually made it myself out of my mom's broken jewelry or earrings that had one missing. The pieces would have gone into the trash otherwise. The only thing I purchased was unicorn hair. I needed it so I could have some magic infused into it. Don’t worry it’s just a few protection spells. And if you’re worried about what your friends will think, tell them it’s from your parents.
Hermione, I hope you have an amazing birthday today. Is it bad that I kind of feel honored to be the only one that gets to celebrate your birthday with you? It’s our little secret.
~ Your secret friend
PS. Let me spoil you this once.
Draco watched as Hermione set the letter down and picked up the chained bracelet, he vowed to make it a charm bracelet one day.
She tried and failed to get it to latch around her wrist. She held it up close to her face inspecting it. He carefully broke the disillusionment spell on the other side of the bookshelf and prepared himself to play his part.
“What do we have here Granger?” He plucked the bracelet out of her hand and held it up to his face as if to inspect it.
She quickly stood up and tried to reach for it, but he held it just a little too high.
“Give it here, Malfoy!” She spat his name out like it was disgusting. Good he thought, she still didn’t think it was him.
“Is this a gift? From that same special friend?”
She crossed her arms and tapped her little foot. Draco always thought she looked cute when she was mad. That’s why he liked to rile her up.
“As a matter of fact, it is …” she took a deep breath. “Please give it back.” She said through gritted teeth while holding her hand out for it. As if he was going to just hand it over. No, it wasn’t that simple.
For the magic in the bracelet to activate he had to be the one to put it on. He hoped like hell she let him.
“It’s a nice bracelet Granger. Whoever gifted this to you must think you are really special.” Draco said as he wrapped the bracelet around her tiny wrist and connected the two ends together. The whole time keeping her eye contact with her so she wouldn’t notice the quick flash of magic that happened when the two ends fused together.
Daring to be bold he brought her hand to his mouth and kissed her knuckles. He let her hand go and leaned in, to whisper in her ear. “Happy Sweet 16 Hermione Granger.”
He glanced at the paper and made sure everything on it showed up.

Then he turned around and left before the magic of the moment caught up to her.
Later that night when Draco got to his dorm, he dug out the journal and closed the curtains on his bed so he wouldn’t be interrupted. Sir. Hairyballs joined him. He gave him a quick scratch under the chin then opened the journal to see if she added any more to it.
I am quite enjoying getting to know you. Though to be fair your list wasn’t quite that long! Is it too late to demand more answers? Blue/gray eyes you say… That sounds so beautiful. I can’t wait for the day I get to see them.
I feel I need to tell you something. Someone, a boy, put on your bracelet for me. I kind of felt guilty having a boy put on a gift that a different boy had given me. I would have much preferred you to do it. I was having difficulty putting it on so I guess someone would have had to help me. This boy who I thought was a bully seems to be something entirely different. I don’t know, I feel like if he would stop bullying my friends, we maybe could all be friends. He kissed me, on my hand but still it was a kiss. I have no idea what possessed him to do it. I also kind of liked that he did. Is that a bad thing to admit to you? I just feel like I can trust you for some reason. I like pretending that you are actually reading these journal entries. Maybe one day you will prove me right and write back.
I had an amazing day today my dear friend. The caldron cake was an amazing substitute for a chocolate cupcake so thank you for that. I adore my bracelet and how the unicorn hair makes it glitter in the sun. I did put a disillusionment charm on it so my friends can’t see. I prefer to keep it to myself and not get bombarded with questions. So only you, me and I guess Malfoy know about it.
I’m so overwhelmed with how today has gone, in a good way, but now it’s time for sleep.
Good night my dearest friend.
(Yes, you can call me sweet girl)
“Goodnight Sweet girl, sweet dreams.” Draco said out loud as Sir. Hairyballs curled up at his feet and they both drifted off to sleep.
Chapter 6: September 19, 1996

September 19, 1996
Sept 19th
Dearest Friend,
Has crooks been sleeping with you? I haven’t seen him around my dorm in a few months. I bet you are spoiling him with treats. If he is with you, I hope he isn’t too much of a bother.
I can’t believe this is my 6th birthday here in Hogwarts. 6 years of gifts from a stranger. Well, I guess you would be a classmate not a stranger. Since next year we graduate will that be the last time I hear from you? Oh, I hope not. I really hope you find the courage to tell me who you are so we can at least send letters to each other. Well, I better get to breakfast. I’ll fill you in on the rest of my day later.
Hermione walked down the stairs headed toward the Great Hall when she spotted Malfoy. He was standing off to the side in a corner. It was hurting her heart to how sad he looked. He was thinner than he was last year and a bit whiter if you could believe.
She had never been one to initiate a conversation with him; he had always been the one. After the kiss he gave her hand last year he had been on the nicer side to her. So, Hermione took a deep breath and walked up to him.
“Malfoy, are you ok?”
He didn’t look up.
“What do you care for? No one gives a shit about me.” He said in practically a whisper.
“I care.” She said because she did care. If she could help him then she would.
His eyes flicked to hers and they were the most beautiful blue/gray eyes she had ever seen. She cocked her head to the side… blue/gray.
He gave her a slight grin.
“Sure, you do Granger. That Gryffindor bleeding heart of yours…”
“Stop. I can tell you don’t mean what you are going to say. If you want to be left alone. It’s ok. I just wanted to see if you were ok or needed anything.” She gave him a smile and turned to walk away but he grabbed her arm.
“Wait…”
She turned back around, and he handed her an apple sugar quill and a chocolate frog.
“Happy Birthday Granger.”
Before she could say anything, he pushed himself off the wall and headed into the Great Hall. When she turned to watch him, she spotted a small tuft of orange cat hair on his robes.
Hermione sat across from Ron facing the Slytherin table. When she peered around him to look at Malfoy, she spotted him looking at her. So, she looked away.
She tapped her foot on the floor. It was him she knew it was him. It had to be. She remembered thinking it was him years ago.
“Are you ok?” Harry asked, sitting beside her.
“Hmm? Oh, yea I’m good.”
“Why is Malfoy staring at you?”
Hermione peered around Ron again. Malfoy lifted an eyebrow at her.
Owls flying in to deliver the post caught everyone's attention except hers. They were locked on him. She watched his eyes close in realization that she’s found him out.
A package and letter being dropped in front of her broke her from her trance.
Hermione stood up and started packing her things until Ron grabbed her wrist.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
She tried to yank her arm away from him, but he had a tight grip on her.
“Let me go.”
“I will once you tell me where you are going. Anytime you get a package you disappear. Then you never tell us what you got. Why are you being so secretive?”
“Let go of my wrist Ron, you are hurting me.” She said louder.
Movement behind Ron caught her attention. Malfoy stood up from where he was sitting, his face was red. He was angry.
She yanked her hand as hard as she could which made him jerk forward and spill his juice, making him let her go.
Before he could say or do anything else she was running out of the great hall towards the library.
Hermione knew Malfoy would be following her.
No sooner than she set her stuff on the table Malfoy was there. He reached for her hand and softly caressed the indents made from the bracelet being dug into her skin because Ron held her wrist so tight.
He whispered a healing spell on her wrist and in an instant the throbbing pain that was there was gone.
“You're good at that. Healing spells, wandless healing spells.”
He continued to rub her wrist under the bracelet.
“I kind of had to learn with the summer I had.”
“What did you do?”
He let go of her hand. “This is what we are not going to do. We can’t… we can’t get too familiar with each other. This is dangerous. What gave me away?” He finally looked at her with those piercing eyes.
She brought her palms to both sides of his face and he quickly grabbed them.
“Don’t.”
“Your eyes.”
They both said at the same time.
He gently removed her hands from his face.
He took a deep breath then pointed to her gift.
“Open your gift. We don’t have much time.”
“But now that I know-“
He was already shaking his head. “That’s not how this is going to work. We don’t have much time before class for me to explain. Now please open your present.”
Hermione untied the green ribbon and lifted the lid off of the rectangle box. All she could tell at first look was that it was a locket before Malfoy plucked it out of her hands, much like he did with the bracelet.
“Turn around and hold your hair up.”
She complied. Then he clasped it around her neck and whispered a disillusionment charm.
He took out a similar looking necklace from under his shirt and showed her.
“They are a matching pair and only to be used in an emergency. Do you understand? I’m talking life or death.”
“We need to talk, Malfoy.”
“I agree. Read the letter and if you still want to, meet me back here at 11:30.”
“But…”
Before Hermione knew what was happening Draco kissed her. His lips were soft and hesitant. Like he was afraid to spook her. She didn’t move because she didn’t want to spook him. She also didn’t know if she wanted this… this… whatever it was with Draco. Draco fucking Malfoy. He tried to coax her lips apart by running his tongue along the seam. She didn’t have time to think, her mouth answered for her, opening on its own.
Hermione let him explore uncharted territory. No boy had ever kissed her like he was. Yes, she had been kissed before but those were just pecks on the lips or cheeks. When he broke their kiss she whined at the loss of his lips. He grinned at her and kissed her on the lips once more before stepping back.
“Wow! That was… wow.” Hermione whispered.
Her mind was reeling at what just happened.
She was panting and out of breath when she looked up at him. His eyes are blown just like she assumed hers were.
He grazed her chin with his thumb. “I’ve been wanting to do that since the Yule ball. You don’t know how hard it was to restrain myself from decking that knob-head Krum for having his hands all over you.”
She grinned. “You were jealous of Victor?”
His face went red, and he ran his finger through his hair, but he didn’t answer.
“Well just so you know. No one has ever kissed me like that.”
He looked at her with one brow raised. “Are you trying to tell me that was your first proper kiss?”
She shrugged her shoulders bashfully.
He grabbed her hand, kissed it then turned it over and placed a letter in it.
“Read both letters. And if you still want to, meet me back here at 11:30.” He kissed her cheek then whispered in her ear. “Happy Birthday Granger.”
Before she could find anymore words, he was gone.
So much information and so many questions were running through her head. She didn’t even know where to begin.
Hermione looked at the letter in her hand and the one that came with the necklace. She had a feeling the former was going to be heavy, so she started with the latter.
Happy Birthday Sweet Girl
My plan is to tell you who I am today. If you haven’t already figured it out with that wonderful big brain of yours. Things are changing and I need you to know some things before all shit breaks loose. I have to get you to see me, the real me. Not the fake persona I had to put on but the me you get in these letters, the me you get when I’m spending weeks trying to plan on what to get for your birthday.
Speaking of, since you took last year's jewelry gift so well, I thought I might push my luck and try again with more jewelry. This was precious to me because it belonged to my Great great grandmother who was an amazing witch like you. She prided herself on being able to take care of her own self and not needing help from anyone. (Sounds a lot like you) Her soulmate, who she was unable to be with because of blood status, gifted her the same piece of jewelry.
If you or I haven’t opened the gift yet, please do so now.
This locket has a mate. My great great grandmother and her soulmate both wore them. He initially gave it to her to use just in case she was in danger, she could instantly get a message to him. They ended up being so much more. They used them as a line of communication between two lovers who could never be together in person but were always close to each other’s heart. The necklace appeared on her dresser one day, that’s how she knew he had passed. Necklaces like the one you and I now have are spelled to return to its mate if the owner dies.
Hopefully I already admitted who I was to you and put the necklace on you. Please don’t take it off. I also spelled it with a few protection charms. I need you to be safe. All will make sense later. If I haven’t scared you away, please meet me back here at 11:30.
I do hope you have a wonderful Birthday, and I haven’t overwhelmed you too much with the reveal.
Happy Birthday Granger
Hermione dropped the letter and clutched the necklace. A two-way necklace? She had heard of two-way drawers and journals but a necklace?! She sat down in the chair. Hermione knew she should have left already to go to class, but she needed to read the next letter.
Hello Granger, it’s me Draco Malfoy.
Surprise! No this is not a trick. Everything else I have ever written to you in these letters have been 100% true. Go back and read them all knowing it’s me. Think about the things that happened around you. Trust me it will all make sense.
I need you to see the letter me as the real me because I’m tired of you not knowing. There is some serious shit I have to tell you today and I really hope I still have your trust when I do. I’m telling you this Granger, because I don’t want to lose you. I think I might be falling for you and if that’s the case you may not be safe.
I’ve had time to think and plan things through so trust me when I say this is the only way we will be able to stay in each other's life (if that’s still what you want).
I know you and that beautiful brain of yours will look for loopholes. There are none. We must go on as we have been for the past 5 years. You must not let anyone know our relationship has changed. I will be your bully and you will hate me. That’s just how we have to be seen together for your safety.
I hate to put all of this on you on your birthday, but things are changing quickly, and I really need to know I have you on my side.
If you agree to not fight me on the rules and not try to find a loophole (because there ISN’T ONE) then meet me in the library tonight at 11:30. I’ll be waiting for you at your special table.
Trust that I know what I am doing and that one day it won’t have to be like this.
11:30pm
Draco paced the length of the stacks. She didn’t have to come; it was completely in her hands. But gods did he hope she would show up. He raked his hand through his hair and let out a loud sigh.
“Are you really that worried I wouldn’t come? After that kiss?”
Draco whirled around. He took a step forward but thought better of it. He needed to keep his distance.
“I didn’t know what to think. It could have gone either way.” He looked her in the eyes. “I’m sorry by the way. For the way I kissed you. I should have asked -“
But she didn’t give him enough time to finish his sentence before she kissed him.
He let it happen. He let himself indulge, If only for a moment. He knew it was a bad idea when he kissed her the first time because he knew he would want more. Of course he would, she was addicting.
He gently grabbed her hands and moved them from around his neck and broke their kiss.
He rested his forehead on hers.
“As much as I would love to continue doing that, we don't have much time. And I have a lot to explain. So please be a good girl and sit down and let me get what I have to say out. This has to be done before midnight.” He kissed her lips once more and backed up. Giving them both space.
To his pleasant surprise she actually sat down and waited.
He took a deep breath and started.
“4th year is when I started feeling things for you. It was also the year I found out my mom was being abused by my father. I only say this because that information is relevant to why the plan must work. I went to the only adult person I could trust, my godfather, Severus Snape. I don’t care what you think about that man, he is good. He is probably the only reason I'm still alive today.”
Draco knelt in front of Hermione.
“That year was also the year you know who was resurrected.”
He searched her eyes to see if she knew where he was going with the conversation. It didn’t appear so; she must not believe all the rumors.
He had to tell her.
“Hermione, you say you can tell my intentions by my eyes. Can you tell that I mean you no harm?”
She searched his eyes. “I trust you.”
He stood up and got behind her, then put one hand over her mouth.
“Still Trust me?”
She shook her head yes.
Draco lifted the sleeve up on his left arm.
She screamed into his hand.
Hermione turned into his chest and sobbed. He held her there for 10 minutes and then continued talking.
“I was forced to get it on my birthday this summer after my father failed his mission and ended up in Azkaban. I’ve been tasked to do some horrible things. If I do not complete my missions they will torture and abuse my mother in front of me before they kill her. Then they will scour my brain for any and every person I care about, bring them in and do the same until I fulfill my mission. Right now, the only person they can’t get too is you.
Snape begged me to stop sending you presents once the dark lord was resurrected. But I refused. So, he started teaching me how to block parts of my mind. Just before I received the mark, I mastered hiding one full day, your birthday. Hermione, if he knew the thought that went into me getting your gifts, how precious I thought you were, how much I value our... whatever we have he wouldn’t just kill you. So, you see. That’s why this has to stay like it has been so I can keep you safe and out of my head. But I need you to see who I really am now because I need you to trust me. If I say run, you must do so without question.”
She looked up at him with tears still falling down her face.
“There really is no other way, is there?”
“I wish there were.” He grabbed her hand and rubbed the bracelet. “This has a tracker in it. If your pulse rate gets too high because you're scared, I’ll get an alert. Your coordinates sync up with my wand and will let me apparate to you. He dropped her hand and lifted the necklace. This is a two-way necklace only to be used under extreme emergencies. The paper in it is small so you can only write so much. They shimmer when a note is sent. The shimmer cancels the disillusionment charm. This is why I say only for emergencies only, for right now anyway.”
He sighed. “Shit, I’m trying to think of everything to tell you.”
She kissed lips, they were hurried kisses because they didn’t have much longer.
He broke the kiss. “The notebook.” He said out of breath. “It is two ways”
“I knew it!” She said, of course she knew.
“But listen, I can’t write on mine just in case they find it. If you have one you can apparate directly to its mate once they have both been written in by the owners.”
Draco kissed her lips again, unable to resist.
This time she pulled away.
“What if we write each other notes but don’t sign them. They could be from anyone.”
“I don’t know Hermione. I still don’t like it.”
Draco cast the time spell and saw they only had 5 minutes left.
“But…”
He shut her up by kissing her. In between kisses he explained.
“I don’t want to argue. We only have 5 minutes. Make me a case and write it in the journal.”
With that they spent the rest of their time snogging.
The next day in potions class she had a note sitting on her desk. The only other two people in the classroom were Draco and Theodore Knott.
What was odd was Theo was smiling at her; they had never had any interaction. He pointed to the note.
For Granger's eyes only
Because Potter stinks
She looked back at Theo who rolled his eyes and made an open gesture with his hands. Then he whispered something to Draco that apparently made him mad because she watched him stomp on Theo's foot. She tried and failed to hide a laugh. When she looked back up both boys were staring at her. She opened the note.
Use that big brain of yours. If Malfoy is caught with several notes in his head leading to no one what is that going to look like?
Didn’t he tell you there were no loopholes? We have thought this over for months. Please just follow the rules.
He's my best mate and I don't want him, or his heart broken.
~Theo
PS. Tell Potter I say hello.
Chapter 7: July 2, 1997
Chapter Text
July 2, 1997
Hermione felt a slight tingle around her neck, the first one ever. She excused herself to her dorm. Everyone was staying in the common room, but it was just so sad in there. She was kind of glad to have a reason to leave.
Crooks jumped on her bed as she sat down, she drew the curtains closed and threw up a silencing spell for privacy. She gave crooks a good scratch under his chin.
“You miss him too, don’t you? “
Crooks gave an affirmative 'meow' and snuggled into her.
She opened the locket and carefully pulled out a tiny piece of paper.
I swear it wasn’t me. I need you to know. I wasn’t going to do it. I lowered my wand. I wanted to be good for you. Please believe me and don’t give up on me.
~ Tell me I haven’t lost you.
Hermione finally broke down and cried. She cried for the headmaster they had grown to love, she cried for the position Harry was in, she cried for both boys who had to watch their headmaster get murdered. Lastly, she cried for the boy that she wanted to hold in her arms and tell that everything was going to be alright.
Her necklace tingled again. She sat up, opened it and took out a new piece of paper.
Protect your parents. They will be targeted 1st since they are muggles & you are Potter’s friend. I’m not saying they might, they will! Protect them Hermione!
Hermione started to write on a piece of paper everything she wanted to say but it was too much to write on the tiny paper.
“The journal!”
She unpacked it from her trunk along with her ink and quilt and got to writing. She hoped he had it with him
My special friend,
I believe you with my whole heart. I believe it wasn’t you. You are a good person please know that. I’m so glad you told me the truth on my birthday. I could tell you were devastated having to tell me. It wasn’t the look of someone that was looking forward to doing things you were told you had to do. I trusted you then and I trust you now.
Please know that I’ll never give up on you. Keep the journal with you. I’ll update as much as possible. I know you can’t message me back on it. But maybe a few short notes through the necklace to let me know how you are. You know I’ll worry.
Until we are both safe and together.

Draco closed the journal, sank down to the floor and cried. She believed him. She still trusted him. A huge weight lifted off of his shoulders at the same time as spasms ran down his body from being tortured earlier. He failed half of his mission but because his godfather completed it, he was allowed to live. He was banished to his room and only allowed to leave when called upon.
He heard someone walking down the hallway, so he quickly shoved the journal in between his mattress. Sat back down on the floor and hugged his knees to himself trying to stop the shaking.
The door opened and closed. He didn’t have to look up to know it was his godfather.
“You mustn’t talk to her anymore. Not even the one time a year you have allowed yourself. It’s even more dangerous to have her in your memory now. Especially if you love her. Wouldn’t want the dark lord getting a hold of her now, would you?”
“Who are you talking about?” He asked.
Draco was ready when his godfather entered his mind. He put Granger in a book and hid her in a bookshelf on the ground floor in the front. He grabbed Pansy's book and ran away from him trying to hide it. He knew his godfather would catch him and take the book. That was the whole point. Put something in plain sight he didn’t want to be seen and run away with something he didn’t give a shit about.
Snape tore through every memory of Pansy. He went through some other memories but never found Granger. When he finally exited his mind, his godfather had a proud look on his face.
“Draco, I don’t recall you sending Pansy a gift on her birthday every year. Yet those were the memories I saw.”
He didn’t bother to look at him.
“Severus, honestly do you expect to tell you every single one of my dalliances?”
He lifted his chin making Draco look him in the eyes and tore through the memories again.
Draco plucked a different book off the shelf and ran with it. This time his godfather didn’t follow him. Pity he was having quite fun.
He tore through book after book of memories. Only person he ever found him with was Pansy.
Snape grabbed his arm. “Where is she?”
“I haven’t a clue who you're speaking of?”
“The mudblood, where is she?”
Draco almost cracked but he held strong.
“Why would I have memories of a girl with dirty blood in my mind?” Just saying that put a bad taste in his mouth.
“Severus, I think he has had quite enough from you.” The dark lord said.
Draco kept his eyes on the ground.
“Draco my dear boy, what are you hiding? Legitimates.”
Draco was tired but he had one last show to pull off. He grabbed the book on the front shelf in the bottom corner and ran as fast as he could. The dark lord was faster and snatched the book from his hands.
Draco fell to the floor. Please Sir, it was one moment of weakness.
He opened the book and saw every memory he ever called her that name, he watched the memory of when he hexed her teeth, then he watched the memory where she punched him, and he ran off crying.
“Please Sir, I didn’t mean to run off. I didn’t want to get in trouble at school for hitting a girl, even if she deserved it.”
The dark lord exited his mind and stared down at Draco with a smirk on his face.
“Oh yes, that was one memory I wouldn’t want anyone seeing as well. It was quite embarrassing if you ask me. If you are good and follow orders, I may let you crucio her a few times as payback if we capture her. Help get you some pride back.”
Draco dipped his head. "I am here to do as you please Sir. I won’t fail you again.”
“Yes, see that you don’t.”
The nose-less git finally left his room. Leaving just Draco and Snape. They were both quiet.
“You really are in love. That’s the only way you could rid your mind of her. To protect her at all costs, because you are actually in love.”
Draco shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Snape headed to leave Draco’s room but stopped just before he exited.
“First shelf, at the bottom right.” He shook his head. “I told you that’s where I hid Lily.” He sighed. “And so, the teacher passes the student.” He dipped his head and left the room.
With all the strength he had left he summoned a piece of parchment, ink and his quill.
Hermione’s necklace tingled again. She wiped her eyes and opened it carefully taking out the new tiny piece of parchment.
I just had the realization that I’m in love with you. Please stay safe. We will be together soon. Thank you for not giving up on me.

Chapter 8: September 19,1997
Chapter Text
September 19,1997
Happy Birthday Hermione Granger,
Gods, it’s been so long since I’ve seen your beautiful face. I have missed you so terribly. I’m currently writing this letter before I see you. In case I don’t have time to tell you in person there are some things you need to know.
I’ve been put in charge of recruiting kids our age. It makes me sick even writing that out. If I don’t follow through, I was told grayback would be sent to recruit and my friends would be one of the first to be added to his pack. There are some kids our age who are begging me to be recruited. Kids who have parents that already have positions so I suppose once I’ve stalled as much as I can I’ll start with them. It’s a fucked-up situation. I hate having to tell you these things, but I know being truthful and not hiding anything is what you need. I just know one day you are going to hear something that breaks your heart too much to forgive. That’s what I’m afraid of. I won’t be able to contact you much these next few months. Since being in charge of recruitment I’m being watched like a hawk. This means not being able to check the journal as much either.
I won’t be able to stay long with you. The only reason Theo and I got to go was because Snape gave us permission to leave a day earlier than our mission starts. He is still playing his part while attempting to help me as well. He has been randomly attacking my mind trying to catch me off guard and find you. (He does it to help strengthen my mind, while also looking like he’s not showing me preference) Baby I have you locked up so tight even the noseless git could only find the memories of me being rotten to you. It requires a lot of control, but I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure you are safe.
I hope you accepted the gift I have for you. It’s the last safety measure I could think of. I hope you understand how precious you are to me.
I’m bringing food since the last thing you have written in the journal was that you were running low.
I hope you had an amazing Birthday.
I love you sweet girl ~DM
Satisfied with the letter, he stuck it in his bag and left for the Headmaster’s office
When Draco walked into the entry way of the office, one of the Carrows sneered at him and walked out.
“Headmaster Snape, good evening. You called for me?”
“Yes, I have a special mission for you from the Dark Lord. It will take you out of school until Sunday. I’ve just spoken to the Carrows who have assured me you will not miss anything too important that you don’t already know.” Snape said as he wiped his brow then his nose.
Snape made up special gestures they use when someone else may be listening in, so Draco kneyws to play the part or not.
Draco knelt on the ground.
“Yes Sir, anything for the dark lord. I’m here to serve.”
There was a brief pause, then Snape eyes glanced towards an empty space behind Draco.
“Satisfied Alecto?” Snape drawled.
Alecto Carrow re-appeared from the corner of the room and narrowed her eyes at Draco.
“Yes, it would seem all he has on him is his wand, a bit of parchment, and some food.”
“Good, you may leave now, the rest of the information is classified.”
Alecto left and Draco stood back up off the floor.
“Do you have her location?”
“I don’t know who you speak of?”
“Hmm, Nott you can come out now.”
Nothing happened.
“Sir, shall I go on my mission? Wouldn’t want to keep the dark lord waiting.” Draco sneered.
“Be back through that floo Sunday, 6:00-6:30 pm it will be open. No sooner and no later. I will not cover for you! So be prompt and stay out of trouble, the both of you.” Snape whispered and handed Draco a parchment with information for his mission on it.
Draco nodded and put his mask on. He stepped to the floo and called for the three broomsticks. He exited the green fire and made his way to the apparition point.
Once he was there, he felt an arm being looped through his. Draco took out his wand focused on the bracelet and disapparated.
They landed on their butts in the woods. Draco quickly disillusioned himself and Theo. They sat still and waited. Sure enough Potter came running out.
When Draco had zeroed in on the location of the bracelet and tried to apparate to it, he and Theo bounced off the wards and made them land right outside of them. But it also alerted those inside the wards.
All of a sudden Draco saw her, she came running behind Potter. “See, nothing is here. We can’t keep coming to check when some silly animal bounces off the wards. Surely if it were someone actually trying to harm us, they wouldn’t trip our wards like that.”
“Whatever Hermione, I’m still mad at you because I’m barely finding out your birthday is today.” Harry snapped at her then turned to walk back where he came from.
Draco promised to deal with Potter later.
Slowly as to not make any noise he started to disrobe his death eater clothes. That would not be what he would greet Hermione with.
He watched her sadly walk up to the stream hugging herself. He knew she was upset and wanted to go to her. Draco motioned for Theo to stay put while he crept over to Hermione.
When he was right behind her (he would need to teach her to be more careful) he canceled the disillusionment charm, grabbed her waist with one hand and covered her mouth with the other. She started to scream until she heard his voice in her ear.
“Do you still trust me?”
She stilled, nodded yes, then turned around. Wand under his chin.
“Prove yourself.” She said with tears in her eyes.
He smirked at her. “Shall I go fetch the tuft of hair you sent me from Sir. Hairyballs?”
She threw her arms around him. “It’s you oh gods it’s you!” She kissed his face.” I thought we might never see each other again but here you are. How are you here? Why are you here? How did you find us? Are there others after us? Did you defect?”
“Merlin, does she ever let you get a word in?” Theo asked exasperated.
Hermione went for her wand, but Draco had already disarmed her. He held her squirming body to his chest.
“Theo, I told you to stay put.” Draco sneered.
“Yea well she had her wand pointed at you. I didn’t know if you might need help.”
“Had I thought she would have hurt me I could’ve easily disarmed her. Now will you kindly disrobe your death eater robes so she can see you're not a threat.”
Hermione was still squirming trying to get out of his hold.
“Darling, you said you trusted me. Right?”
She wasn’t paying attention. All she saw was death eater robes and was trying to flee.
Draco did the only thing he knew would calm her down: he kissed her. And not just a peck on the lips kiss. No, it was a ‘I haven’t seen you in months’ kiss, a ‘I professed my love to you on a piece of parchment and now I’m here to stake my claim’ kiss. It was a ‘I miss you so much and I never want to let you go’ kiss, but most of all, it was a ‘Happy Fucking Birthday Hermione Granger, my beautiful, amazing, precious witch’ kiss.
Theo cleared his throat.
“I hate to interrupt the reunion, but we should probably get under some wards. Either some of our own or theirs. I don’t like being out here unprotected.”
Draco broke the kiss first because he knew Theo was right. He had to protect the most precious thing in his arms. He kissed her once more on the lips for good measure.
“Now, I brought Theo in case I ran into problems and needed backup. Plus, he wanted to see Potter.”
She frowned. “Harry?”
“Draco!” Theo warned.
“Long story. Does Potter know about us?”
She bit her lip. “I’m sorry. I told him when Ron left. I was just so sad. I missed you…”
He kissed her then put his forehead on hers. “It’s ok. I’m not mad. It will just make him accept us easier. Can you pull us through your wards? We all should get under protection.”
The wards shimmered as Draco and Theo were let through.
“Wait, I almost forgot the reason we came!” Draco exclaimed.
He lifted Hermione up and twirled her around.
“Happy birthday my love!” Then he brought her in for a kiss.
He couldn't help it, all he wanted to do was snogg the daylights out of her while he could.
“Let her go now or kissing her will be the last thing you do!” Potter yelled; wand pointed at Draco’s throat.
“Harry! Put your wand down! It’s Draco! I already verified before I brought them into the wards.”
“Them?”
“Miss me… Shnookums? Oh, by the way this here that’s poking you in the back… it’s not the wand you want poking you. Now, lower yours from my mate's throat.” Theo sneered.
“How do I know it’s you?” Potter asked.
“Oh Harry, do you really want your friend to know that you like it when I…”
“Stop, stop!” Potter, face red, dropped his wand.
Draco smirked. “Seems we all have some reacquainting to do.”
And they did just that. Harry explained how he and Theo had been in a secret relationship since 4th year. He was scared everyone would judge him.
Hermione assured him he had nothing to worry about. Everyone would accept him no matter who he loved.
Draco unloaded all the food he brought for them, and they re-stocked their kitchen. Once that was done, he brought out the special dinner he had the kitchen make for Hermione, spaghetti and meatballs with chocolate cake for dessert.
Once it was time for the cake Draco placed a candle on top and lit it. He walked the cake over to Hermione singing ‘happy birthday’ to her. She made a wish and blew it out with happy tears in her eyes.
Theo and Harry went for a walk while Draco and Hermione decided to stay and cuddle.
They both awkwardly got ready for bed, neither one looking at the other while they disrobed.
Hermione was ready before him and transfigured the bed to be a little longer and wider to fit them both. Neither one talked about the extra room he could have stayed in since Weasley had left the previous week.
Draco was struggling with himself because he wasn’t sure how appropriate it would be to sleep in the bed with her in just his boxers, but it would equally be as uncomfortable with his pants on too.
She must have noticed him hesitating because she spoke up after she tucked herself in bed.
“Are you going to sleep with those pants on? Surely that can’t be comfortable.”
“Umm… yea I normally sleep in my boxers. I didn’t know how comfortable you would be…”
“Go ahead, it's fine. I’ll even turn to face the wall.”
He took a deep breath and divested himself of his pants then slipped in behind Hermione.
It was like he had done it a million times; he wrapped his arms around her and breathed her in. All the tension they had both felt, melted away.
“Gods, I’ve missed you.” He whispered into her ear giving her a light squeeze.
“I’ve missed you too.”
They lay there quietly soaking in each other's warmth. Just enjoying being able to breathe the same air.
“How did we get here?” Hermione asked.
“Your friends were idiots who didn’t see what a perfect witch they had in their circle. So, I made it my mission to make sure she knew she was special.” He kisses the back of her head. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Sure.”
“Were you disappointed it was me?”
She was quiet for a moment gathering her thoughts.
“No, I think had I figured it out earlier I might have thought you were just pranking me. But I’ve never been disappointed that it was you.”
He squeezed her and let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
“Hermione, I know I’ve told you I’m in love with you. I don’t want to be presumptuous and think just because I said that it means we are automatically together. So... will you... be my girlfriend?”
Hermione twisted in his hold to face him. When their eyes connected hers sparkled.
“Draco Malfoy, I'm in love with you too and would absolutely love to be your girlfriend.”
He crashed his lips to hers loving the taste of her mouth. He rolled on top of her then he started kissing and sucking down her neck while his hands explored her body.
“Malfoy…”
“It's Draco when I'm kissing you like this.”
He sucked at her pulse point on her neck making his mark.
“Draco, I need you to know I’ve never…”
He stopped his kissing and looked at her.
“We don’t do anything you don’t want to do.”
“Oh I want to. I just… Can you go slow? I’ve never done anything.”
“Anything, anything?”
She shook her head.
He kissed her lips gently. “Baby, I’m a virgin too.”
“What?! But I thought… with Pansy?!”
He shook his head. “That’s what she wanted people to think. Everything was over the clothes for us.”
“I didn’t know I could love you even more.” She put her palm on the side of his face, and he turned his head two kiss it.
“Me too. But I’m serious. As soon as you’re uncomfortable, let me know and we can stop.
“I will. Can you kiss me now.”
“Cheeky witch.” He smiled and then he kissed her.
Their first time was awkward. Lots of fumbling with clothes and positions.
So many questions like: Do you want to be on top? Can I touch you here? Is this ok? Are you ready? Am I hurting you? Do you want to stop? Can you go faster? Does that feel good?
Once they got into a comfortable rhythm there were so many praises: You’re doing so well. I love you so much. You make me feel so good. I’ve never felt like this with anyone. You are my world. I only want this with you ever. You are amazing. You look so beautiful.
Draco!
Hermione!
When she opened her eyes his blue/gray eyes were already staring back at her. He kissed her forehead.
“I’m sorry, did I fall asleep?” She asked.
He chuckled. “I think we both dozed off for a bit. I just woke up a few seconds ago, myself. I think we outdid ourselves the first time.”
Her face turned red, and she buried herself in his chest.
He wrapped his arms around her and squeezed.
“Are you ok? Do you hurt?”
He always checked in with her. It made her feel so loved.
“I’m good, a little sore if I’m honest but from what I’ve heard that’s normal. Was it… was it good for you?”
He lifted her chin to look at him.
“Hermione, it was perfect. You were perfect. Now hand me my wand and I’ll clean us up and cast a pain relief charm. THE CHARM! Fuck! How could I be so stupid?”
“Babe, calm down I’m on the muggle contraceptive. So, we are good.” She kissed his worried lips and reached for his wand. “But if you’re still worried, we can still cast it after. There is a small window but we should be good.” She handed it to him.
She watched him cast a cleaning charm on both of them and the pain relief charm on her then handed her his wand back.
She attacked his lips and snogged the daylights out of him. When she finally let him come up for air he had a goofy look on his face.
“Not that you ever have to have a reason to kiss me like that but what was that for? I feel like I won a prize.”
She leaned back and did the charm on herself then set his wand back on the side table.
He frowned at her.
“You trusted me, that's what that kiss was for. But I knew it would ease your mind if we did the charm as well so that’s why I cast it myself.”
He smiled at her and kissed her forehead.
They were quiet just listening to each other breathe for a while.
“I want you to know I didn’t come here expecting to have sex with you. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely loved it, but I don’t want you to think… I wasn’t expecting anything from you.”
“I know. I don’t think I want the answer but… when do you have to leave?”
He squeezed her. “Can we not talk about that now? I just want it to be just right now. Like we have all the time in the world.”
“I like that idea.”
“I do have another gift for you. But I don’t think you’re going to like it.
He summoned the box, opened it and laid it on his chest where she could see it. They were a matching set of gold braided bands.
“These rings are promise rings, they are special for two different reasons. First by just wearing them I want us to promise to each other that we will be faithful and never stray. To be there for each other when this war is over.
Secondly, I want you to wear this specific ring because I had to do a bit of blood magic to infuse my blood in them. When you are wearing this ring, it will be as if you have some of my blood in you. If by some chance you get caught and taken to the manor the cursed objects the death eaters have been known to use on people shouldn’t affect you. Hermione, I’ve seen the things some of those cursed items do to people. It’s not pretty and most leave permanent scars.”
She knew he was serious. Before she could ask why he thought she wouldn’t like it he continued.
“Here’s the part you’re not going to like. Once we put them on. I have to cast a spell to activate them. For the rings to work they have to sink into our skin leaving a silver scar around our finger. Yes, they can be removed with another spell and the scar will be gone once the ring is removed. So, it’s not permanent. But Hermione, the process I was told, it hurts like hell.”
“Wow. That’s… a lot.”
“I know baby and if we had a ton of time, I would tell you to think about it first.” He sighed. “I have to leave first thing in the morning.”
Hermione wrapped her arms around him tight. As if to hold him there forever.
“Let’s do it.” She whispered.
“Are you sure? I want you to do it so I can protect you, but I never want you to do something you’re uncomfortable with.”
“Positive.”
They both placed the respective rings on each other.
Draco cleared his throat. “With this ring Hermione, I promise to be true to you. To never stray from you, to protect you always. I swear this on my magic.” He kissed her ring.
She took a deep breath as Draco swished his wand with flourish, he spoke the incantation ligabis sanguinem meum cum tuis (I bind my blood with yours) and then the pain started.
Tears stung Hermione's eyes as Draco massaged her hand when the ring sunk into her skin.
“You are so brave, baby. I love you so much. I’m so sorry that it’s hurting you. I just need you protected at all costs sweetheart.” Draco said through gritted teeth, she knew he was in pain too.
Hermione couldn’t stop the tears streaming down her face. It’s the most excruciating pain she had ever felt.
Draco placed kisses all over her face. “You're such a good girl, you're doing so good.” He kissed her forehead.
It was like it didn't matter that he was in pain he was just worried about her. He always put her first.
Hermione grabbed his hand and kissed his finger then laced their hand together. The pain had finally subsided.
“I love you so much. I love how you protect me. Can you just hold me the rest of the night?”
She felt him kiss the top of her head and as she dozed off, she heard him shower her with even more praises.
“You are such an amazing witch. Such a brave lioness. My beautiful angel. How did I get so lucky with you? You complete my life. I will be the man you deserve one day. I love you so much, Hermione Granger. You are my favorite person in the world.”
She woke up because she was cold. She gradually opened her eyes, and he wasn’t there. For a second, she thought she might have dreamed what happened yesterday. Until she realized she was still naked.
“Draco!” She sat up on her bed. Her heart started beating quickly. He didn’t even leave a note.
“Draco!” She said louder.
The door opened and there he stood. She launched off the bed and wrapped her arms and legs around him.
He chuckled. “Um babe, you're still naked. Hold on.”
He carefully maneuvered them back in the room and shut the door.
“Why didn’t you wake me?”
He sat them down on the bed.
“Honestly because you were sleeping so peacefully. I got up to make sure all my stuff was packed and ready for when we leave. I was actually just fixing to come back in here and crawl back in bed to cuddle you when you tried to give Potter and Nott a show.”
“I thought you left without saying goodbye or leaving a letter.”
“It would probably be better if I just left while you were sleeping. But after last night I just couldn’t.”
“How long do we have?”
“Darling, not enough time for a repeat performance.”
“But we could be quick.” She started trying to take his shirt off, but he stopped her.
“Darling, I would love to make love to you this morning, but don’t you think it will hurt that much more when I leave?”
“I just need you to hold me.”
She knew she’s being whiny, but she also knew it was going to be a long time before she got to see him again.
He laid down behind her, holding her waist. But it wasn’t enough for her. She needed to feel his touch again.
She grabbed his hand and moved it down to her core pushing two of his fingers in her folds making sure he knew exactly what she wanted.
“Hermione.” He whispered as he pumped his finger in and out of her.
“I need this Draco. I needed to feel you again. To make sure I wasn’t dreaming.” She said breathlessly.
“Fuck it.”
When his fingers left her, she wanted to cry. She just wanted to feel him one last time.
Then all of a sudden, she heard his zipper, then he was slowly pushing into her.
"I could never deny you. You know I'll give you the world if I could."
“Oh Draco!”
It was quick and rushed but it felt so good. It was exactly what she needed.
“I don’t want to go. I want to stay here with you.” He said as he sat on the side of the bed.
They knew they only had minutes left.
“Do you have an extra shirt or tie you could leave with me? So, I can sleep in?”
He reached behind his back and took off the shirt he had on then slipped it over her head kissing her nose once her head was through the hole. Then he dug in his bag and grabbed a green tie and tied it loosely around her neck.
“Fuck sweetheart, looking at you like this is making me hard again.”
Hermione stood up and wrapped her arms around him but before she could kiss him Nott was at the door.
“We got 3 minutes. Say your goodbyes, Drake. Granger, you stay safe.”
They poured all of their feelings in their goodbye kiss. Promises to see each other soon, loving each other so much, swearing to both be careful.
He made her lay down in bed then he tucked her in and kissed her forehead.
Before he shut her door he made one last declaration.
“I think September 19th is my favorite day of the year too. You keep my heart safe. I’ll see you soon, love.”
Hermione cried herself to sleep.
Chapter 9: April 5th, 1998
Chapter Text
April 5th, 1998
Draco had just gotten back from a week-long mission when Theo found him on his way to his room.
“Look Theo I’m exhausted. Having to enter several people's minds takes a lot of concentration. I’m sure what you have to say is important but if it’s not life and death kindly fuck off so I can shower and nap in peace.
“They know they left the Forest of Dean.”
Draco stopped walking.
“What the fuck did you just say?”
“They are close. I give them 30 till they are found.”
Draco practically ran to his room scribbled something on a piece of paper and put it in his locket.
Hermione, Harry and Ron were making their way through a forest they just apparated to. It was a peaceful place.
Her necklace tingled. She smiled. It hadn’t tingled in a while. The moment she opened her locket a gust of wind blew by making tiny paper float away from her and land on the ground. She bent down to pick it up just as a flash of green passed though where she had been standing. The paper lay on the ground unread because she was already doing what it said.
RUN!!!
They weren’t fast enough. They had been caught. One of the snatchers said they were taking them to Malfoy Manor. She didn’t know if she wanted to see him or not. She didn’t know what would be easier.
Draco paced his room. He knew she was caught by someone but was it a death eater or a snatcher? When his wand alerted him of Hermione’s heart rate skyrocketing his instinct was to apparate directly to her, but he couldn’t not being inside the Manor. He picked up a glass and threw it. All of his protections he had put on her failed. He failed.
There was a sharp knock at his door.
“Your aunt Bella requests your presence.”
He didn’t have time for her crazy antics. He needed to make a plan, but he had no idea where to start until he could leave the Manor.
Another knock
“I wouldn’t keep her waiting.”
Draco took a deep breath and cleared his mind and set off to see what the deranged woman wanted.
When he entered the room all of his breath left him.
Hermione was tied up on the dining table he would be expecting to eat at later that night.
Before he could open his mouth Bellatrix cast a crucio on Hermione.
The pain knocked him down on his knee. He wasn’t ready for that one. He had to clear his mind, no one could find out.
“Nephew! Look you brutes, do you see how much my nephew respects me? He kneels waiting for my command. Good job Draco. The dark lord will love hearing of this progress. Do come, I need you to identify someone for me.”
She really was deranged if she thought Draco would willingly kneel for her but if it’s what she had to believe so be it.
The next crucio he was ready for. It only made him trip, but sweat was pouring down his face.
“Draco, you look unwell.”
“Just got back from a mission with Grayback you know how those go.”
“Right, we’ll come, do you recognize this young man?”
Draco looked Potter in the face. He sneered at him and poked his cheek with his wand.
“What’s wrong with his face?”
“This mudblood over here, crucio, must have cast a spell on him.”
Draco’s fist was balled. He knew he would have crescent snapped cuts in the palm of his hand. That had been a stronger crucio . He didn’t dare look at her. If he did, he would lose all concentration.
“Nephew, focus on his face tell us, is this Potter?”
Draco glared at Potter, how dare he not protect Hermione. It was his fault she was in this mess. But he couldn’t blow their cover, no he needed him to help get her the hell out of there.
“I can’t say for sure. If I were to agree and be wrong the dark lord would have my head. Sorry to displease Aunt Bella.”
She pointed a wand at his head.
“Bella he’s right. If we were to alert the dark lord and be wrong, he would have all our dead.” Snape drawled.
Bella sneered at Draco then she smiled a wicked smile.
“Tell me then. Who is this?” She pointed to the red head.
Draco glared at him and answered without even having to think. “That’s Weasley, Potter’s friend and the girl is Granger, his other friend. But they could have easily gotten lost. Weasley isn’t the smartest in the group.”
Draco cringed as Bella cackled. He had no choice but to make them. They were on posters everywhere. He would look suspicious if he didn’t.
“Good job my boy. Now be a deer and take the boys to the cellar. I’m going to have fun with the mudblood.”
Draco yanked Potter and Weasley when he was out of hearing range, he finally spoke to them.
“Bloody fucking idiots the both of you.”
“Malfoy…”
“Save it Potter. You had one job, to protect my girl-“
“Your girl?! You think Hermione is your girl? She belongs with-“
Draco turned Weasley around and had him up against the wall by his throat.
“Finish that sentence Weasley and you will wish you were never born. Potter, who’s Granger's boyfriend?”
“Let him go, he can't breathe!”
He wasn't wrong the gits face was turning purple.
“Answer the question, Potter.”
“Do you think she will forgive you if you kill him?” Draco looked at Potter and sneered.
“I don’t think you know Granger as well as you think. Now answer the fucking question.”
“Hermione and Malfoy are together.”
Draco turned to smirk at the red headed git only he had his guard down when Hermione was hit with another crucio. He let go of Weasley and fell to his knees on the floor. This one was worse because not only did she use full power, but Hermione was screaming ’DRACO!’ at the top of her lungs.
When the curse stopped, he was able to stand up again. He wiped the tears and sweat off of his face. And continued as if nothing happened.
He unlocked the dungeon door.
“Potter, call for Dobby. He will come for you and he’s able to apparate within the walls.”
Just then a blond curly haired girl came into view.
“Hello Draco, it’s nice to see you again. Have you come up with a plan?”
“Hello Luna, yes I think so, if these two don’t bunger it up.”
He went to shut the door after Potter and Weasley entered but Luna put her hand on his arm.
“Thank you for helping with food, water and medicine. We want you to know we don’t blame you for anything that happened here. We see you are a good person.”
Draco held her gaze for a moment then nodded his head. “Thank you, Luna. I’m trying to be.”
He tried to leave again but another hand caught him.
He sighed. “What is it, Potter?”
Draco looked at him and Potter was staring at him in shock.
“You linked yourself to her, didn't you? So, you take some of the pain she gets.”
Right when he was going to tell him to mind his fucking business.
She was crucio’d again.
He braced himself on the wall, eyes closed tight. She was yelling for him again.
“Pull yourself together Malfoy and get out there.”
Draco cleared his throat once the pain stopped.
“Pettegrew will be down in a bit to make sure I did my job. That will be your chance.”
Draco handed Potter a piece of paper through the bars of the door.
“Give that to Hermione.”
With a stiff nod he left.
Hermione woke up in a bed. The last thing she remembered was being in Malfoy Manor. A knife slicing into her skin. Blood dripped down Draco’s arm. She sat up confused.
“Lay back down, you need to rest Hermione.”
“Harry, where's Draco?”
When he looked at her sadly and shook his head no.
She knew he had chosen to stay. It broke her heart.
“He asked me to give you this.” He tried to hand her a piece of paper, but she didn’t want it. She wanted him.
She crossed her arms. “Then he should have given it to me, instead he looked at everyone but me. I needed him to give me strength but…”
“You don’t know, do you?”
“Know what?”
“Those rings linked him to you. Whatever Bellatrix did to you he felt. He basically took half the pain away from you. And honestly Hermione, do you think you would have been able to look at him being tortured and not break?”
Hermione stared at Harry wide eyed.
“The blood, I remember seeing blood dripping from his arm.” She stared at her own arm where the obscene word sat under a bandage.
“They know!”
She read his note.
I’m so so sorry I couldn’t protect you.
Please know that I love you with all my heart.
She wrote him back.
You stupid stupid stupid man it’s not your fault.
I love you too! Let me know that you’re ok.
She placed the note in her locket and closed it. A few minutes later it tingled. So, she opened it back up and took the paper out.
He’s not ok. Don’t write back, you're lucky I was here. He’s unconscious. He was punished severely they saw his arm. Don’t use the journal either. He will contact you when he can.

Chapter 10: September 19, 1998
Chapter Text
September 19, 1998
Sept 19th
Dear Special friend,
8 people have told me Happy Birthday so far today and I don’t even care. The only person I wish could say it is you. I miss you so much it hurts. I feel like I can’t move on living without you. Your mother told me how to take the ring out if I wanted too. I told her she was out of her mind if she thought I would give her my promise ring back. Harry and Ron begged me to do it, but I refused. Ron told me I need to get on with my life and to stop pining after someone I would never be able to see again. I hexed him and banned him from my floo. Then I remembered it was a family heirloom so I told Narcissa if she insisted, I would take it out. She told me that it would be best if I did. I kind of went crazy on her. I told her there were only two people in the world who knew what was best for me, you and me.
“Miss. Granger, writing in your little Journal again I see.”
“I’m sorry Mr. Goff.”
“No worries, Miss Granger. I’ve told you many times that as long as your work is done you are free to journal away. But I do have some evidence that needs to be input before 3. I’ll also need a response before 3 as well.”
Hermione frowned. “A response Sir?”
“Yes, you will see what I mean. I checked out evidence room 10 for you. Just use your badge.”
Before Hermione could protest anymore Mr. Goff entered his office and shut his door. Meaning he was not to be interrupted.
Hermione sighed, gathered her ink and quill set, a stack of parchments, her wand and badge, then set off for evidence room 10.
The ministry told her they would fast track her to Auror status, unlike Ron and Harry, she wanted no preferential treatment, so she started at the bottom. She was an assistant to Jack Goff. She had to stifle a laugh when he first introduced himself. She knew Draco would get a kick out of his name. He was an Auror for 20 years then became one of the best solicitors out there. He was a dream to work with. Very respectful and always willing to teach.
Hermione swiped her badge and the green light on the door turned red alerting anyone passing by the room was occupied. As she walked into the room she spotted a chocolate cake in the center of the table. She frowned. Why would chocolate cake be evidence? Once she reached the table, she let out a gasp and everything from her hands fell to the floor.
The cake read Happy Birthday Granger. Right beside it was a letter that read…
TOP SECRET
For: Hermione Granger
ONLY
Hermione picked up her wand and with a swish righted everything that fell. And set down in the chair before reaching out and taking the letter and opening the seal.
Hermione Granger,
It’s hard to think that 7 years ago I was ‘a stranger who knows your birthday’. A little boy so scared to walk up to a pretty witch and be friends with her. I kept my distance then, and many years to follow, by choice. Then we meet and fall in love and yet I still choose to stay away to protect you. Now when all I want is for you to be in my arms, when I choose for you to be in my life finally, we are forced apart. Life is just not fair.
I’ve thought of you so many times over the past months. Wanted to reach out to you but because my beautiful, amazing, smart witch decided she wanted to work alongside my solicitor so she could help get me out of prison, we have a no contact rule.
This is killing me, being on the other side. Not knowing how you are, not getting to see you, I’m so sorry for putting you through that.
There are many things I’m sorry for, but I’ll save those for when I’m in person. I did beg my solicitor for one piece of information about you. I needed to know that word was gone without a trace from your skin. I cried like a baby when he told me your arm was free from any marking. Thank fuck I at least did one thing right.
Now for the reason you are here. I love you so much and I love that you want to keep that ring in your finger, but it was only ever supposed to be temporary. The magic in it is not complete. For it to be completed the two rings would have to be extracted and new blood magic added. What I propose is this… we both have them extracted and wear them as physical rings. Once you guys get me out (because I know you will) we can talk about doing the proper magic and reinsert them. Tell Mr. Goff your answer and my mother will be able to perform the spell. She likes you, just so you know. Yes, even after your outburst. Gods, I love you.
Now for your gift I racked my brain on what to get you. I went back and forth several times. But I remembered that morning in the tent. You wanted me to leave my shirt and tie so you could have something that smelled like me. I contacted my mother and had her get a t- shirt, a button up, and one of my quidditch jerseys to send to you. Along with that I also had the cologne I use sent just in case they don't smell like me. I had my mom put together a basket for you to have a relaxing evening. See I’m spoiling you even while I’m in prison.
Happy Birthday Granger!
I wish I could kiss you, kiss all the tears I know you have shed while reading this letter away. My heart hurts not being with you, and I know yours does too baby girl, but we have to be strong and trust that one day we will be together. Gods, I don’t want to end this letter.
Until next year Sweetheart, I’ll be counting down the days.
~ DM
“Malfoy, you have a visitor.”
Draco had been nervously waiting for this day to find out if she would listen to him.
Potter had sent him a letter first saying she refused to take it out. He had apparently done research on the rings and found they could eventually become harmful if left in too long. Draco had no idea where he got that information from because he hadn’t come across any information like that.
Then his mom sent him a letter about how possessive she had been acting about it.
It took lots of begging and words from Potter before his solicitor would agree to let him contact Hermione once a year.
Darco put his hands through the hole in the door so they could put magical suppressant manacles on him. He stepped back and the guard opened the door. He followed beside him to the visiting rooms.
When the door swung open no one was in there. He lifted an eyebrow but stayed silent and sat down in the chair that was for the prisoners.
His manacles were attached to the center of the table then the guard left.
When the door opened again his mom swept into the room. She went straight to him and hugged him.
“Mother, I don’t think we are supposed to touch.”
“Nonsense, I helped change Chuck's nappies when he was a baby.”
“Chuck?”
“Your guard dear keep up.”
Finally having her fill of affection, she went and sat on the other side of the table.
“How are you dear? Are they feeding you enough? Treating you right?”
He deadpanned at her. “Seriously? Ok fine I’ll bite… One, I’m in prison. How do you think I am? Two, the food is crap. And three, so are the guards.” He snapped at her.
She glared at him. “Would you talk to Hermione like that?”
Draco sat up straight in his seat.
She waved him off. “Don’t be stupid you know it would never work because of the magic around this prison. But she did come visit me the other day. Seems she’s all of a sudden changed her mind about the ring.”
Draco let out a sigh.
His mother sat up in her chair and looked over at the door. “Now we haven’t much time so put your hand flat on the table so I can cast the spell.”
He thought putting the rings on hurt like hell. Extracting was on another level.
“I was able to give Hermione a pain potion so for her it wasn’t so bad. I’m so sorry, Draco dear. Just a few more seconds.”
It hurt so bad it pulled tears out of his eyes. “Fuck!”
The chain ring lay on the table. His mom picked it up and inspected it.
“You would think it would be covered in blood, yet…It’s just shining.” She hummed to herself then put the ring on his finger and cast a disillusionment charm on it.
“Thanks mother. For everything.”
She stood up. “You’re welcome son. I must be off. I have another prisoner to visit.”
Draco lifted his brow. “You do?”
She came around and gave him a hug, then tucked something in his waistband.
“Yes dear. I’m asking Lucius for a divorce.”
Draco smiled big. “Good for you.”
She nodded and left.
The guard, chuck he guessed, took him back to his cell. Once inside he slid his hands through the hole so ‘Chuck’ could take the manacles back off.
He was shaking his head laughing. “Your mom is something else.”
“She said helped change your nappies?”
“That’s what she said. I was racking my brain trying to remember her, but I couldn’t. Then I remembered you are a pureblood.”
“So?”
“Think about it. What pureblooded witch changes her own kids' nappies.”
A smile slowly grew on Draco’s face. Then he was the one shaking his head. “Slytherins, what can I say?”
“You have a good one Malfoy.”
With a nod chuck left.
Draco quickly dug around his back waistband to see what his mom had left him.
He was pleased to see a letter from Granger.
Draco,
Let me start with I am fine. I have no scars from that horrible night left on me so please believe you did save me. When you sent that note when we were in the forest it blew out of the locket. I bent down at the exact time a green spell was aimed at me. YOU saved me.
Please get that through your head YOU did protect me. Thank you for always looking out for me.
Baby I miss you so much. I got my hopes up so much thinking we would finally get to be together after the war. I swear Draco we will get you out. I’ll be able to kiss your face once again.
I loved all of my gifts you sent me. I wear your shirts to bed every single night. Did your mom tell you how much I cried when the ring was extracted? Not because of the pain but because I just knew I would feel like a piece of me was gone. It took me a few days to realize I actually prefer to see it. Every time I think about you, I rub it remembering you massaging my hand trying to make it feel better.
Love I’m taking a chance sending this with you mom this once. I can’t do it again. I don’t want to jeopardize not being able to work on your case. I know I’ll be the only one that makes sure it doesn’t get shoved to the side.
I’ll be waiting for you no matter how long it takes. I need you to know that.
I love you so much Draco Malfoy.

Chapter 11: September 19, 1999
Chapter Text
September 19, 1999
Sept 19,
Baby,
I get to see you today! I told you September 19th was the best day ever! I’m so excited I don’t think I even slept last night. We have been working tirelessly on your case. I am confident to say you will be getting out today. You may have to be under house arrest, but we already have arguments ready to fight for you to choose where you want to have your house arrest. I didn’t know if you would be comfortable living in the manor seeing as how your last two years there played out. Your mom is staying in Italy, or you could get your own place, live with me? Theo said you could live with him but honestly, I think yo u would probably kill Harry or Theo. They are insufferable around each other. So much pda. Not that I mind but it's the inappropriate pda that I want to have obliviated from my brain. Ok. It’s almost time. I would say wish me luck, but I don’t need it.
~HG
Hermione was sitting right behind him. If he wanted to, he could reach out and touch her but that would be against the rules.
“All rise for the Honorable Minister of Magic Kingsley Shacklebolt.”
Draco was already standing. He took a deep breath. This was it. He would find out if all the hard work Hermione and Mr. Goff paid off.
They fought tirelessly. Had a counter argument for everything they threw at them. The hearing lasted 5 hours. Potter and Hermione both spoke for him and his character.
Draco looked around to see if he knew anyone else there. The first thing he noticed was the Weasel was nowhere to be found. That was good. Theo and Blaise were there showing their support along with the youngest Weasley who was awfully close to Blaise. He wondered when that happened. His mom was there sitting by his Aunt Andramada. Draco smiled. He was happy she got her sister back.
“Do you have any questions Mr. Malfoy?”
Shit what had he said before? Why the fuck wasn’t he paying attention?
“Excuse me?”
The minister smiled at him.
“No, he has no question. Thank you so much Minister!”
“No problem, Miss. Granger. You keep him out of trouble.”
Hermione’s hand wrapped around his and Draco’s breath hitched.
“Oh, I most definitely will.” She squeezed his hand.
He realized he should probably thank him as well. For what he had no clue, but Hermione was holding his hand that was enough to be thankful for.
“Yes, thank you so much minister.”
He dipped his head and banged the gavel. “This case is closed.”
Draco turned to Hermione to ask what happened but was bombarded with lots of people.
“Great job Draco!”
“Amazing work Mr. Malfoy!”
"How long have you and Miss. Granger been together?"
"What are you going to do now?"
“You did it! Congratulations!”
"Do you see marriage in the future?"
“Let’s celebrate your success with drinks!”
Draco started hyperventilating. This was all too much. Why were they thanking him? He didn’t do anything. He bent down to brace himself on his knees. He was getting dizzy. Was it hot in there or was it just him?
More praises.
“We knew you would win!”
“Look, he's so excited! Are you ready to go back to the Manor Mr. Malfoy?”
"Are you two going to live together now?"
"Can we get an exclusive?"
“Draco the man of the hour!”
“Do you think he used her so she would help get him out of prison?”
Was the last thing he heard before he passed out.
She dabbed his face with a cold washcloth. He had been out for an hour already. She was starting to get worried.
“Who the fuck let all the press in?” Hermione asked.
Theo paced the room. “Take a guess, who was working security today.”
“Ronald?!” Hermione screeched.
“Have I been out so long you already replaced me?” Draco asked in a groggy tone.
“Draco!” She whispered.
“Bingo. You got it right this time. Fuck my head hurts.” He finally opened his eyes, and she smiled down at him.
“Hey.”
He reached up to touch her face. “You’re real. Just had to make sure. I had lots of dreams waking up in your lap only to not be real.”
He winced and closed his eyes again.
She kissed his forehead. “You go back to sleep.”
“I love you.” He sighed before drifting back off.
Hermione played with his hair as tears fell. He was going to be ok.
“Hey, I found a wheelchair. What’s wrong?” Harry asked as he entered the room.
“He woke up, made a joke, told her he loved her and went back to sleep.” Theo told him.
“He’s going to be ok. He was probably just overwhelmed.”
Hermione finally looked up at Harry. “Where's Ronald?” she seethed.
He shook his head. “I sent him home. Gave him a week's suspension. Then when he’s allowed back, he’s on desk duty until he earns my trust back. He knows he fucked up. Now let’s get Malfoy in this wheelchair and get him home in a bed so he can rest easier.”
When Draco woke up, he had no idea where he was. He had never seen the bed he was on and sure as hell didn’t recognize the room he was in.
Meow
He turned his head and there was an orange cat. He had a collar on that said 'crooks'.
He looked the cat in the eyes.
“Sir. hairyballs is that you?”
He confirmed with a head butt and a meow.
Draco sat up in the bed and Sir. Hairyballs made a home between his legs like he did when he visited him in his dorm at Hogwarts.
He looked around the room again.
“This must be Hermione’s flat, isn’t it?” Draco scratched Sir. Hairyballs under the chin and he answered with another meow.
Draco noticed his wand was on the table beside the bed when he picked it up, he saw a note from Granger.
Draco,
Wow, you can really sleep. It’s been 24 hours since your hearing. I wanted to take off today, but Mr. Goff wouldn’t allow it. He said you would probably be sleeping anyway. I’m not sure what all you heard once the verdict was read but you have been cleared of all charges. The only thing you have to do is submit your wand for testing every 6 months for 5 years to make sure you are not using unforgivable. That’s it Draco. You are a free man! I am so incredibly happy for you… for us! I wasn’t sure if you wanted to go to the Manor or not so I brought you to my flat. It’s fairly small but does the job. I know this is sudden and you can totally say no but if you would like to move in with me you can. I do have a spare room if you want to start off as just roommates who date. It was just an idea. I won’t be offended if you say no.
Make yourself at home. I have plenty of food in my kitchen. If you must call a manor house elf please don’t let them reorganize my place. I have everything just so.
I should be home by 6. I can’t wait to see you awake.
Love HG
Chapter 12: September 19, 2000
Chapter Text
September 19, 2000
Hermione stretched her arms as her eyes fluttered open. She reached for him and felt a piece of parchment instead of a warm body. She sat up in bed and grumbled snatching the paper up.
Happy 10-Year Birthday Anniversary Love
10 years ago, I decided to reach out to you and send you a little gift for your birthday. I remember the first thing you said to me while we waited for the train-
“Did you know Hogwarts holds the second most books in the entire world? Second only to the library of Alexandria. I want to go there one day. Maybe on my birthday one year. It’s September 19th, my birthday, my favorite day of the year.”
I was so nervous waiting for the train but listening to you prattle on calmed me. So, when I noticed no one had sent you anything for your birthday I had to rectify the situation. And this began my tradition of sending you a birthday gift and note every year without fail.
With just a piece of parchment, some ink and a quill I managed to capture your heart and I am so thankful I did. You have changed my life for the better. I know technically we have only been together for a year, but it feels longer for me. I watched you all those years on the sidelines just waiting for my moment. I think it’s time. So, what do you say Granger will you spend the rest of your life with me?
When Hermione looked up Draco was on the edge of the bed on one knee. She took in a sharp breath.
“I love you Granger, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life with anyone else but you. Will you marry me?”
Hermione launched into his arms and attacked his lips with hers.
“Yes. I. Will. Marry. You.” She kissed him between each word.
Draco picked her up and twirled her around before crashing his lips back to hers. After he kissed her breathless, he set her down and slip the 2-karat marquise diamond ring on her finger.
With tears streaming down her face, she opened her mouth to say something, but Draco beat her to it.
“Don’t say it’s too much or I’ll buy you a bigger one.”
She smiled and gave him a chase kiss.
“I was going to say it’s beautiful and I love it. I love you.”
“I love you too sweetheart. But that’s not your only gift.”
Draco handed her a small envelope. She took out the letter and two tickets fluttered to the floor. While Draco picked them up, she read the letter.
To Hermione Granger
I, Demetrius Rhodes, caretaker of the Library of Alexandria, do hereby invite you and a guest to come visit us. These two tickets are redeemable for 48 hours of perusal time. I assure you this time will not be enough to put a dent into seeing the whole of the library. I have included a map so you can pick your top 10 sections. I can’t guarantee you will make it through them all, but you will definitely not make it through more. Each person may choose to duplicate up to 50 pages from any book or duplicate one book total because no book leaves the campus. The duplication process will be done by one of our very own librarians trained in the process.
The 48 hours will be spread out into 6 days. 8 hours a day is highly suggested to be spent in the actual library. Time for eating, sleeping and reading will not count for the actual 48 hours if you abide by these rules.
We have accommodations you will be able to stay in while on the campus. Certain books do not leave the library floor however others are allowed to leave as long as they stay on the campus. These books you can take to read at your pleasure while you stay with us. It’s suggested to make plans to stay with us at the Library of Alexandra for a total of 8 days as our campus has many other places you may like to visit that are equally beautiful.
This invitation is open for the next 4 years. However, it’s recommended you let us know your dates at least 6 months in advance because our accommodations do fill up.
We cannot wait to welcome you to the world's largest library.
~Demetrius Rhodes
Caretaker of the Library of Alexandria
Chapter 13: Epilogue
Chapter Text
Epilogue
The Malfoy’s ended up going to the Library of Alexandria for their Honeymoon. The campus actually had a chapel, had they wanted to get married there, but they wanted to be with family and friends.
They got married September 14, 2001, at the Zabini Vineyards. Courtesy of Blaise himself. The vineyard took care of everything, the decor, food, invites, entertainment. Everything!
It was a beautiful wedding during sunset with only the closest of friends being there.
The couple left for Alexandria, Egypt the very next day. They stayed on campus from September the 15-29, two whole weeks, spending their time very wisely because of the Slytherin prince himself.
The sweet talker charmed the pants off of all of the librarians there. He explained to them he just wanted to enjoy seeing his wife light up at every book she deemed fascinating. That it wouldn’t be fair for them to use both of their 48-hour allotments at the same time. So he, the Slytherin, proposed that they used their 48 hours separately but got to go around watching each other. They would both swear to only touch the books when it was during their own 48-hour allotment.
Hermione doubted his plan would work… never doubt a Slytherin with as much charm as he had.
The librarians were smitten at the fact he just wanted to watch his wife “take it all in” that they agreed before getting the ok from Demetrius. He reluctantly said it was fine but to never tell anyone what happened because outsiders only got one 48-hour allotment every 10 years. Then he mutters something about young love and waved them off.
Hermione was so impressed with Draco that she gave him the best blowjob and the best shag of his life that night.
September 19, 2002
Draco wrote Hermione a letter about how being with her felt like home. No matter if they lived in her small apartment or if they found someplace new. He knew without a doubt that as long as she was there, he would be happy.
He gifted her with blueprints to a house he wanted to have built for them and their future family if they ever chose to have a family.
Together they worked on the blueprints until it was something they both loved, agreed on and sent them off to the contractors.
September 19, 2003
Draco wrote Hermione a letter telling her she was the brightest star in his life. And how he would be forever thankful for September the 19th.
After she read the letter Draco informed Hermione she would get her gift later that night.
Little did Hermione know, Draco worked with an astronomer to find a star that could be seen closest to the constellation Draco but also needed to be seen on September 19th.
That night he walked with her on their balcony with a telescope in hand, although they didn’t need it. They shut off all the lights, so the stars shine bright in the sky.
Draco spread a blanket on the ground and they both laid down on it. She immediately pointed out Draco which warmed his heart. He grabbed her hand and moved it a touch over to a star that wasn’t a part of the constellation.
“Do you know what that star is called right there?”
He asked her.
She scrunched up her nose and brows, thinking hard but then shook her head.
“Do you want me to tell you?”
“Should I know it?”
“Its name is Hermione.”
She sat up.
“What? I’ve never heard of a star with my name!”
Draco cupped her face.
“Darling, that’s because I had it named after you last week.”
Hermione launched herself onto Draco and kissed him. She peppered kisses all over his face.
“That’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard someone do. And it’s right by Draco!”
“Of course it is Darling. I picked it for that reason.”
She kissed him again. Then pulled back with sparkles on her eyes.
“Let’s make a baby. I know I’ve been back and forth about it all year but I’m sure, I’m positive. Let’s make a baby now.”
“Hermione, you know I told you I would wait as long as you want.”
“I know and I’m done waiting. Unless you want to wait now.”
“No, I'm ready.”
“I was due to take my monthly potion today. I can still take it if-“
“No, don’t take it. Let's make a baby.”
They make love under the stars.
September 19, 2004
Draco squeezed the warm body he was holding before he opened his eyes. She had been making circles on his chest with her fingers for a few minutes before he let her know he was awake.
When he opened his eyes, she had propped herself up on his chest just looking at him. Gods he was obsessed with her. He loved that he was privileged enough to wake up to her beautiful smiling face every day. He lifted his head enough to reach her nose and plant a kiss on it.
“Good morning sweet girl.”
He smiled at her until it faltered when he realized what day it was. He sat up bringing her with him. Then reached for his wand to see what time it was, only it wasn’t there.
“Granger, what did you do with my wand?” He lifted an eyebrow at her.
She laughed at him, got off the bed and put on one of his T-shirts.
He was fixing to tell her he much preferred her naked when she turned around with a gift and a note.
“First of all, Love, it’s Malfoy not Granger anymore and second...”
She started walking towards the bed then crawled up the bed and sat right in front of him. She had looked sexy as fuck doing that and his cock wholeheartedly agreed.
“I figured we could break tradition this year.”
Draco frowned at her and was going to object when she pressed her finger to his lips. He bit it. Softly but wanted her to know he wasn’t pleased.
“This is what I want for my birthday. I want to give you a gift. Please let me do this and we can go back to your way next year.”
He glared at her. Not that he wouldn’t agree to anything the witch said he just wanted her to think that he had to think about it.
He sighed. “Fine! You get your way only because it’s your birthday.”
She rolled her eyes and grabbed a chunk of his hair and pulled. “I’ll get my way because I’m Hermione Malfoy and my husband loves me so much that he will give me the world if I ask for it. Don’t try and pretend otherwise.”
Then she kissed him quickly on his lips and sat back down in front of him.
“Fuck that was hot. Are you sure you don’t want one of your presents right now.” He lifted both eyebrows suggestively.
She handed him a long rectangle box and a letter.
“These are for you, read the letter first.” She smiled.
Her eyes were all glassy like it was her favorite thing in the world to present him with a gift on her birthday.
“Thank you, my sweet girl. It feels odd to be getting a gift on your birthday, but I’ll accept it.”
He hands her the box back. Why don’t you hold that while I read the letter.
“Good idea.” She whispered.
Happy Birthday Hermione Malfoy
That’s how I’m supposed to start these things right? I feel bad putting your name as it isn’t your birthday so happy birthday to me! Draco my love I don’t know if you remember reading one of my journal entry’s years back that read one day I wanted to make you as happy as I was when I received your gifts every year. I am so happy to be able to do that with you today.
Baby, I am so honored to be your wife. You have made me the happiest girl I could ever be.
I love our family and can’t wait to watch it grow alongside you.
xx HM
Draco smiled and looked up at his wife who was crying.
“Oh baby, thank you. I love my letter. I can’t wait to watch our family grow either.” He was worried because his witch was crying. He didn’t want her to think he didn’t appreciate her.
“These are happy tears. I’m just excited for you to open your present.” She handed him his gift.
He shook the box.
“How long did it take for you to pick out my special gift?”
He tore the wrapping off.
“Well, it took almost a year to get it right but we eventually did.” She answered with a few sniffles and sobs.
Draco looked at the box and cocked his head. He hadn’t seen a box like that before. He read the words ‘Clear Blue’ before she snatched it.
“Hey, I thought this was my present.” He pretended to pout.
“You’re taking too long.”
She stared at him while she opened the box, took a contraption out and handed it to him.
New tears were forming in her eyes.
“Read it. Out loud.”
Draco stared at the contraption, it said clear blue on one end just as he was fixing to say it out loud, he saw a small box and read that word out loud.
“Pregnant…” he whispered. Confused for a moment he stared at the word reading it over and over his heart beating faster and faster. Then he looked up at his beautiful gorgeous, amazing wife.
“Hermione, you’re pregnant?” Tears were now pricking his eyes as she nodded.
“If that’s what it says. I kind of figured but wasn’t sure. I just realized yesterday how late my monthly was and bought a muggle test.” She pointed to the box then the contraception in his hand. “I took the test this morning and put it back in the box before looking.”
Draco looked back at the digital ‘Pregnant’ just to make sure it was still there.
“Draco, say something.”
“Where’s my wand?”
Hermione reached over to her side table and grabbed it to hand it to him.
Draco flipped them over, so he was straddling her and she was on her back.
“What are you doing?”
“Did you know there’s a spell you can cast to find out?”
“I never learned it.”
Draco lifted her shirt, so her belly was exposed. He held one of her hands while the other did a simple swish and flourished towards her abdomen.
All of a sudden, a ball of gold light pulsed at the healthy rate of a baby’s heartbeat.
Draco dropped his wand, leaned his head down and kissed her stomach.
“I already love you so much baby Malfoy and I just found out you existed. You are truly going to be the light of our lives. But if you can close your eyes and ears for a bit I’m fixing to snog your mommy senseless.”
Hermione let out a sob.
Draco crawled up Her body laying a trail of kisses and promises of more attention to be paid to those parts later. He reached her mouth and gave her the most passionate kiss ever.
“Mrs. Malfoy, you have given me the best gift I could ever receive.”
She took his head in her hands.
“Mr. Malfoy, I believe it was a group effort.” She smirked at him then pecked him on the lips.
“Happy Birthday, Granger.”
Before she could protest, he covered her mouth with his so he could make good on the promise he made to baby Malfoy.
~The End~
