We Are Never Getting Back Together

Summary:

Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, otherwise known to the world as Captain America and Iron man, faced having their relationship in the media published. But that didn’t show the full story. Behind closed doors they faced the challenges of any relationship. More than they should, they had a constant on again, off again relationship. Constantly breaking up and making up, stuck in the endless cycle.

Chapter 1

Notes:

I was watching the TS eras tour (yes again, don’t judge me haha 😂) but I was listening to We Are Never Getting Back Together and thought of Stony we’ll see where this one goes.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Bucky sat on the couch in the apartment that he shared with Steve. He moved in and they shared the apartment when he got the winter soldier programming figured out. He had been living with Steve for the last two years. He spent a lot of time working on missions and trying to earn his place on the team. He was doing well getting along with everyone. Well, almost everyone, except for Tony. He was constantly butting heads with Tony over Steve. Not for the reasons that some might think.

He’s gotten the questions many times. Has he ever loved Steve? Was he ever with Steve? Did he take Steve’s virginity? People really had nothing better to do than to spread the gossip through the rumor mill. It pissed him off at first, now he just ignores it. He had bigger problems to deal with.

The door swung open and he looked over to see Steve had his head down, based on his sniffles he was crying again. The door slammed and Steve made a B-line to his room closing the door and Bucky let out a sigh. He paused his movie and got up, he didn’t bother knocking it was their routine. He opened the door to see Steve laying on his bed, face buried in his pillow sobbing, like it was the first time.

“What happened this time?” Bucky crossed his arms with a sigh.

“It’s over.” Steve sobbed. “For good.”

Bucky rolls his eyes, how many times has he heard this one? Steve and Tony were the “it” couple. The media praised them for their relationship, what they didn’t report on was what went on behind the scenes. That was that Steve and Tony got into a lot of arguments and their relationship was so on again, off again, Bucky was considering requesting a revolving door for their place.

“What did he do this time?” Bucky asked.

Steve took a few shaky breaths before he sat up to look at Bucky, his eyes red and swollen. He’d already been crying for a while.

“We were supposed to have the weekend, just us and he has to work again. When I asked him why he couldn’t put it off for a few days we got into this argument. Then we broke up.” Steve put his head down, covering his face with his hands. “How could I be so stupid?”

Bucky could feel the blood starting to boil that of course Tony would mess up and Steve was the one blaming himself. “You’re not stupid, I don’t wanna hear that.”

“I keep going back. Then he just hurts me again.” Steve sobbed.

“C’mere, kid.” Bucky sat beside Steve, pulling him under his arm. He knew it was useless, give him a few days and Tony would reel him back in with that charm of his. He saw it once before in Howard when they met. Like father, like son. Bucky hated it, he hated seeing Steve like this over and over again. When things were good, they were great. The lovey couple that was plastered over the media, that was them when it was good.

The problem is that phase would last a month, maybe two, at the most. For those few weeks, Steve was the happiest he could be. Then they’d get into another argument again and Steve would be back home crying for a few days. Of course, Tony comes by to talk and Steve keeps on listening. Then he’d be roped back into the cycle of break ups and make ups.

Bucky learned his lesson quickly not to hang around when they talked, it would always end up with them getting in each other’s pants. That gave Bucky enough trauma that he never wanted to be around when they made up.

“C’mon, I’m watching a movie. I’ll get the ice cream.” Bucky suggested.

“Okay.” Steve mumbled. Bucky got up and Steve followed him heading to the couch. Bucky pulled out the two pints of ice cream and some spoons. He plops himself beside Steve and hands him one of the ice creams and a spoon. He presses play, another movie he’s been catching up on.

Bucky’s thankful for them being super soldiers and having an increased metabolism, especially how much ice cream they go through. He kept peering over when one of Steve’s sniffles interrupted the movie. He tried to ignore it, if Steve was ready to talk then he’d say something. So they sat there eating their ice cream. Bucky would be ordering pizza later, he figured out that he could order through FRIDAY and charge it to Tony’s account. It was his fault they were ordering so he might as well pay it.

* * *

The days passed and Steve moped around the apartment, Natasha of course stopped by. She too got roped in, but she had more self control than Bucky did and more showed up to tell Bucky to leave it alone. That going after Tony is going to do anything but drive them together more. Steve rarely left the apartment, hell bent on avoiding Tony at all cost. Even shutting his phone off to avoid him.

Steve was doing fine until they were watching some tv show and a romantic couple showed up and Steve left for his room again. That’s when Bucky heard the door and let out a frustrated groan.

“Steve, do you want to talk to him?” Bucky called. When there was no answer he assumed no and went to answer the door to see Tony. “He doesn’t wanna see you.”

Bucky went to close the door when Tony stopped him. “Please, just let me talk to him.”

“How many times is this now? No, okay, he’s had enough of the back and forth.” Bucky argued.

“I know. I screwed up again. Please I just wanna see him and apologize.” Tony begged.

“Buck.”

Bucky let out a sigh and looked back to see Steve was there. “What?”

“You can let him in.” Steve put his head down and went back to his room. Bucky dropped his head, here goes the cycle again.

“You fucking hurt him again, I swear…” Bucky warned.

“Yeah, yeah, I heard it before.” Tony waved off. Bucky didn’t stop his glare as he let Tony in, grabbing his jacket and leaving.

Steve sat on the edge of his bed and was ready to tell Tony to leave for good this time. He was going to be strong enough to tell him to leave. That he couldn’t take the back and forth. The knock on the door pulled him from his thoughts and he saw Tony. God, this man was literal perfection, how could anyone say no to him? Steve certainly couldn’t. That’s how they keep ending up here.

“What do you want?” Steve turns away. There’s no way he can say no or tell Tony to fuck off once he looks into those brown eyes.

“Baby, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” Tony sighed.

“Yeah, I’ve heard that before.” Steve sniffled.

“I shouldn’t work when we have plans. I’m sorry, okay? I don’t wanna break up. Please.” The bed beside him shifts, great now he’s right there, even harder to say no. Steve tried to keep looking away but his goddamn curiosity got the better of him. He slowly looked at Tony, how was someone so good looking but so bad with relationships? “I’m sorry. Please, forgive me?”

“You broke up with me.” Steve whispered, this goddamn brown eyes. Steve could swear they made him melt.

“It was a mistake. Please, you know I’m sorry.” Tony leaned in, kissing Steve’s neck. “C’mon, baby. I’m sorry. Really.”

Steve could hear Bucky’s voice in the back of his mind screaming at him to say no. To push Tony away and end it once and for all. Instead he let out a whimper, what the hell was that? What happened to staying strong? Saying no and stopping this constant back and forth cycle?

“Please.” Tony mumbled, his hand moving under Steve’s shirt and Steve couldn’t take it.

“Last fucking chance.” Steve moaned.

“Promise.” Tony mumbled. Steve let his mind wander to all the good memories he had. He couldn’t just give all of those up. They were together for years now, the only difference was it was Bucky coming in with the cheesy movies and ice cream. Natasha would stop by but not as often, once Bucky took over she was done with the back and forth.

“Fuck it.” Steve reached for Tony’s shirt undoing the buttons as quickly as he could. Stopping to let Tony pull off his shirt and crash their lips back together. Steve loved Tony, yeah he was narcissistic and full of himself but that’s not always the Tony he knew. Steve laid back taking Tony with him, not wanting to break the kiss. Steve undid the last few buttons and Tony sat up taking off his shirt and tossing it off to the floor somewhere

Steve worked on his pants like he couldn’t get to it fast enough. This was always something they did. They argue for days, a whole week, once. But then they’d end up having some really great make up sex. That was something Tony was never bad at. He was excellent in bed and made Steve feel like he was on cloud nine every time.

“Lift.” Tony instructed. Steve lifted his hips and Tony pulled his pants down. Steve laid back while Tony got up to get rid of his pants. He got back on the bed and settled himself between Steve’s legs, lining himself up and pushing in.

Steve let out a gasp and arched his back as Tony went back to kissing his neck. His hands explored Steve’s body as he started to thrust, building up his pace. Steve never understood how Tony did it. He was shy about this and would try to keep quiet, for the fear of someone hearing them. But Tony would have him crying out and begging for more like they were the last two people on the planet.

“God, Tony.” Steve tangled his hands in Tony’s hair. His breathing is getting quicker. Soon Tony’s thrusts became hard and fast and Steve’s moans got louder. Somewhere through the fog of his brain he hoped that Bucky didn’t stick around. Another part of him didn’t care if the world heard him.

“I love you.” Tony panted still kissing Steve and making sure he felt unbelievably good.

“I love you.” Steve whined. Tony pinned his hands on either side of Steve’s head, not that it was really necessary. If Steve wanted he could easily get out. It was more of a novelty of Tony keeping control of their current situation. Steve loved it when he took control sometimes. It was a refreshing break from having to give orders and lead the team.

“Please Tony.” Steve begged between breaths. “Almost there.”

“Cum for me, baby.” Tony whispered. Steve freed his hands with one quick movement and pulled Tony close, crying out as he released his load between them over their stomachs. Tony gave a few more hard thrusts before he buried his face into Steve’s neck with a groan.

“No more walking away.” Steve looked at Tony, still catching his breath.

“Promise, we’re together forever.” Tony smiled.

Tony reached for a couple of tissues and started wiping up the mess Steve left. He pulled out and used the tissues to catch his load that spilled out of Steve. Getting settled beside him as they held onto each other. Steve’s second favourite part, the cuddles afterwards.

* * *

Bucky went to the training room to work out what frustrations he had on the punching bag. He knows when he gets back to the apartment Steve will be back to his happy self and Tony will be either leaving or have already left. He could feel the sweat from his workout as he took another punch, trying to catch his breath.

“Hey, where’s Steve?” Natasha walked up.

Bucky looked at the time. “Probably getting laid about now.”

“Tony’s back.” Natasha sighed.

“I tried to make him leave. But then Steve heard him and said to let him in.” Bucky shrugged.

“So they’re back together. At least it was only a few days this time.” Natasha smirked.

“I give up. I’m requesting that revolving door for the apartment. Then he can just waltz in when he wants.” Bucky laughed.

“I don’t blame you.” Natasha laughed.

“You think Stark will ever change?” Bucky asked. Natasha looked at him and raised an eyebrow. Making Bucky laugh. “Hey, I can wish for the best.”
