Chapter 1: I Am Death

Chapter Text

I am fire, I am death."

"I kill where I wish and none dare resist."

"My armor is like ten shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!"

-smaug the golden
...

Outside the mountain, it is night; we see the great doors of Erebor closed and shut. Suddenly, the side of the mountain breaks as an enraged Smaug smashes his way out. He flaps his wings and lifts off into the sky, spinning and causing the remaining gold on him to fall off in a golden shimmer. He swoops off toward Laketown.

Smaug soars through the air toward Laketown, talking to himself.

"I am fire. I am... DEATH!"

The dragon was full of anger, why wouldn't it be? He was Smaug, the most fearsome dragon in all of Middle-earth. He was one of the last great dragons the world had ever known.

He, a dragon created by the Dark Lord Melkor himself to be the most powerful of his tools of war and destruction, created to lead his armies and cause destruction

His name inspired terror throughout the world, oh the cursed Dwarves had discovered him when he came to their mountain full of gold and killed all their people.

Smaug continues his reign of terror on the town by breathing fire everywhere he flies
We see the Master of Lake-town and Alfred are trying to escape with their treasures as Smaug is flying in to attack Lake-town!

"I warned you! Did I not warn you what would come of dealing with Dwarves? Now they've done it! They've woken the dragon; they've brought the apocalypse upon our heads! Come on, quickly, quickly! Faster now, I'm trying to evacuate myself here! Careful with that. Never mind the books! Get on, get the rest of it."

"but, Sire, should we not try to save the town?"

"the town is lost, save the gold!"

The people of Lake-town are in a frenzy as Smaug flies down to exact his revenge

A lake-towner, "pile 'em up!"

Tauriel and Bane try to help Bard's children escape as Smaug is about to attack

"we have no time, we must leave." Tauriel says

"get him up. Come on, brother. Come on, come on, let's go."

"I'm fine, I can walk."

Tauriel and Bane turn to the kids.

"we need to leave!"

"go as fast as you can."

"we're not leaving, not without our father."

"if you stay here, your sisters will die. Is that what your father would want?"

we need to leave. If your father survives, we'll find him."

The Master of the town is on his large boat with Alfrid.

Master of Lake-town, "come on! Come On! Faster! Faster!"

Master of Lake-town, "if only we could take more of these poor people with us. But they're hardly worth it.

"I quite agree."

He kicks a man as he tries to climb onto their boat; referring to the Master's boat as it approaches their path

"look out!"

suddenly the Master's boat hits their smaller one; to his men rowing the boat

"move it! Move it! Come on! Faster!"

As some of the Master's treasure falls off the boat and into the river

"my gold! My gold!"

"we carry too much weight. We need to dump something."

"quite right, Alfrid.

the Master throws Alfrid off the boat but at the same time he gets tangled in some overhanging rope that Bard's using to escape from his cell

"faster! Faster!"

As Bard pulls the rope suddenly this pushes the Master's weight against the back of his boat which helps break away the prison cell wall and Bard escapes, he finds a bow and some arrows and them climbs onto a roof to try and find a way to kill Smaug.

We then see Bard climbing onto the bell tower and start shooting his arrows at Smaug. Bard keeps shooting his arrows at Smaug but it has no effect on the dragon

"he hit it! He hit the dragon!"

"no."

"he did, he hit its mark, I saw!"

"he didn't pierce the hide!"

"these arrows cannot pierce its hide. I fear nothing will."

Bain suddenly notices the black arrow; he grabs a hook and swings off the boat

"what are you doing?"

"get back here!"

"come back! Bain! Come back!"

"Bain!"

"come back here!"

"get back here kid!"

"Bain!"

"leave him! We cannot go back."

"Bain!"

Bard uses his last arrow to hit Smaug which does nothing to the dragon, he watches in despair as Smaug continues to destroy the town when Bain shows up.

"Da!"

"Bain! What are you doing? Why didn't you leave? You were supposed to leave!"

"I came to help you."

"no! Nothing can stop it now."

"this might."

he holds up the black arrow

"Bain, you go back. You get out of here now."

That's when he notices Smaug coming their way

"Da!"

Smaug takes off the top of the bell tower off as he flies over them making, Bain nearly falls off but manages to hang onto the edge with one hand.

Bain!"

"Da!"

Bard pulls Bain up to safety as Smaug flies over towards him

"stop, stop! Halt! Halt!" The master of lake town screams

Bard takes the black arrow from Bain and stands to confront Smaug.

"who are you that would stand against me?" Smaug roars looking around for his attacker

Bard goes to grab his bow but finds that it's broken.

"now that is a pity. What will you do now, bowman? You are forsaken. No help will come." Smaug smugly states

The Master of Lake-town yells to his men, "now's our chance! Go now! Head to the open water!"

Smaug looks at Bain.

"hmm. Is that your child? You cannot save him from the fire. He will burn!"

Bard aims the black arrow while balancing it on Bain's shoulder.

"stay still, son. Stay still."

"tell me, wretch, how now shall you challenge me?"

Bard smiles to himself as he notices Smaug's heart.

"you have nothing left but your death!"

Smaug roars as he starts making his way towards them.

"Bain. Look at me. You look at me. A little to your left."

Bain moves slightly.

"that's it."

As Smaug flies Bard shoots the arrow and it strikes the dragon's heart, causing him to scream in pain and crash into the bell tower.

Smaug roared in rage as he flew through the skies. He had been very careless, very careless, he knew. It had only been a second, a second was all it took to drive a spear close to his heart.

Smaug yells in pain as the light leaves his body, as he plummets to the ground he lands straight on top of the Master's boat crushing him and his gold.

The pain was fading away as he fell deep into the cold and the shadow. Smaug knew this shadow of old and harbored no fear of darkness or its depths. It was, to him, a return. And yet, how furious he was to have been slain, how bitter his hatred towards those who had driven him from his treasures. Within the fall, he knew nothing but anger and it called him to fight. Scrambling with claws, with spears, he pulled towards the shallows of the lake and life once more.

The pain returned. It bloomed from his chest and its branches wrapped around his heart and his body. It was a wretched tree of death, and there was no way to conquer it.

He roared into the silence. Darkness taking him.

And so end the life Smaug the Golden....

Or so it should have been.
...

When people talk about the afterlife, they never mention the part where you get thrown into your favorite fantasy series. After dying quite pathetically via the tripping of some stairs at the tender age of 23 because, I wasn´t paying attention to where I stepped,  I was expecting ... well I wasn´t expecting anything because I was dead, but that´s beside the point. The point is I now get to be a honest to God dragon and not just any Dragon, but smaug...

But i'm getting ahead of myself, let's start from the beginning.

I didn't know what to expect after death. No one knows—though I was no stranger to it around me physically, death was a mysterious, scary and inevitable thing to all creatures—humans and animals alike. Even tiny insects are not immune to the dark unknown. It is the one thing everyone can be certain will happen at some point in our fragile lives, yet we are all unsure of what will happen after.

So it was more than unexpected when I woke again in my...

Wait

My eyes opened to the sight of the outside world: azure blue skies, tall evergreen forest and cold wind. I exhaustingly lift my head to check my new surroundings. Yup, I'm not in my bedroom or my apartment anymore…heck…I'm not in my town anymore either! Wherever I am…it's north…wayyyy north from where I live, it might not even be the same continent!

Vision blurry, I shook my head to make sure that what I was seeing was real.

Is this a dream? How can it be a dream…I'm sore all over, surely any dream you'd wake up from that kind of stuff. Last thing I remember before I woke up: I was getting ready for bed…now I'm suddenly here.

"W-where am I? Eep!" I covered my mouth as soon as I heard my words come out wrong, quickly noticing the deepness and older sounding it was from my normal voice. "what is this?" There it was again! What is going on!?

pull my hand away from my mouth and that's when I noticed something far worse going on with my body. I squint my eyes, focusing carefully on my hand, but then my eyes widened in shock. Instead of soft pink flesh there is red-golden scales My eyes follow the trail up from my hands to find more of the strange texture all over my arms. I start losing it as any sane person would, freaking out as my breathing gets rapid. Looking back at my hands I finally see the talons…they've replaced my regular human nails…my fragile hands are gone and are now lizard like paws spear sharp claws.

"t-this can't be real."

I start making my way to the pond to see my reflection, maybe the shock will wake me up from my sleep!

Though it's not too far away my new hind legs prevent me from making much progress. My mind went straight to trying to walk on two legs: that's obviously not going to work. Whatever I am it's obvious I'm stuck walking on all fours now. Even then it's hard getting my new legs to work together…the movies make it look easy…it's not.

After about a minute of dragging myself across the sand, I finally brace myself for whatever would be staring back at me.

Oh boy…I wasn't ready.

I let out a deafening yelp of surprise in response: the creature looking back opened its mouth in shock too and I fall on my back, flailing my arms in retaliation.

"I'm a MONSTER!"

Why do I look like this!? This can't be real; it must be a dream.

I pinch myself with a sharp claw to wake myself up.

To my surprise: it worked, and I ended up waking up in my bed…heaving a heavy sigh in relief…end of story!

No…heh, unfortunately…that's NOT what happened.

What actually happened was that I jolted back in pain, having drew a bit of blood from the action I caused.

I move to see my reflection again,

"what am I…some dinosaur…no…I look more like… a dragon?"

Not just any Dragon but one I have only seen once before.

I'm goddamn smaug!

Hopefully this nightmare will end.

It didn't.

That's when I soon realize that this is more than just a nightmare…this place is a coffin. You see, not only am I some monster now, but I'm trapped in this large cove…alone…with virtually no way to leave.
