Chapter Text
Hello everyone! Here is a sort of new story!
This is my story Ace of Spades, but set in modern times! This has been in my One Shot Series for AoS, but people wanted it to be its own story! So here it is! I will keep the One Shots up in my AoS One Shot Series, and this is almost identical to the first 3 chapters, but with some changes here and there
I have the backstory for Ace planned out, and it will be mentioned as we go along, and I have a lot of ideas for what can and will happen. The One Shots in AoS One Shots about Modern World will still be there, but the rest will come here now, and more will come and not move as fast as the One Shot Series did
Hope you enjoy
Read and relax
Ace opened the door he was in front of, having gone through many security doors to get here, and the man that sat on the other side of a desk, Edward Newgate, sent a look at him. "Who are you?" Ace hummed. "Not important." Ace then sat down in a chair, before Ace gave a hum as he looked at Edward Newgate. "If you want to, call security and I will leave. But I am here just to speak with you." The business man nodded, frowning. "Okay. How did you get in here?" Ace shook his head. "Not important. I am here for a serious matter." Newgate nodded. "Okay, which is?" Ace hummed. "I am what you call a man for hire, an informant, and an assassin/mercenary. I am here since someone wants you dead." Newgate frowned. "So, you're here to kill me?" Ace shook his head. "No, I am not."
That had Newgate frowning more. "Then why are you here?" Ace gave a breath. "I always do a background check on everyone I go after, and yours was basically stainless. Only an incident where one of your children shoplifted. I have no reason to harm you, your family, or your business. You've done nothing. So I won't do anything. The reason I am here is since someone wants you dead, and I want to warn you about it; you're a good man. Be smart and don't trust those close to you." Newgate frowned. "Who wants to kill me?" Ace shook his head. " I won't tell, this is hopefully just a thing that will blow over." Ace then reached into his pocket and took a card out and handed it to Newgate. "Shall you ever need me, call me. Handing this to the police will do nothing." The other nodded. "Okay." Ace gave a nod and he stood up. "This has been a pleasure, Newgate." Then Ace left calmly.

Whitebeard frowned when the mysterious man left, and he took his phone and called down to Curiel, asking for the video records, so he could understand how this person got inside and to him. It was high security and 3 locked doors, needing a special card to get through. But as he asked for it, Curiel sighed. "Our system just went black, it's coming back now, but I have nothing for the last 5-10 minutes. I hope that isn't an issue." Whitebeard frowned and said it was fine, nothing to be concerned about, before he hung up.
When he had, Whitebeard brought a hand to his chin. So, this person had broken in, disabled their systems, and just talked to him? It had to be someone special and amazing, for having done that. His systems were high end, so this was weird.
But now, Whitebeard would take this man somewhat seriously and try to be a bit careful. It might just be a ruse. But he couldn't help get a bad feeling in his chest, which he hoped was related to something else
---x---
Two weeks later, Whitebeard sat by his desk in his office, looking at the card he held, the card to the mysterious man. Should he call? He did need help. Teach had taken vital information and equipment, as well as injuring his family. Teach was no longer family. He took a breath, before he typed in the number on his phone, before he called. It rang twice, before someone answered. “Hello, you've reached Ace. What may I do for you?” Whitebeard sat in silence, not sure if he would be able to do this and if he should just hang up. As he was contemplating, he heard a hum. “You know, Newgate, I will hang up if you don't speak. I have other arrangements today.”
Whitebeard blinked. How did he know it was him? Whitebeard knew he had a hidden number for every search engine that held numbers. “I… I need help.” He heard a hum “Of course, why else call me. What may I do for you?” Whitebeard took a breath. “I need to get something back from a man called Teach D Marshall, and for him to be… neutralized.” A hum again. “I see. I can do that. How neutralized do you want him? Just a bit, unable to come even close to you, his life ruined, or dead?” Whitebeard thought for a second. “Not able to come close to me, or anyone I care for, or hurt anyone else.” That was what he wanted, he wanted Teach away. He heard a 4th hum. “I can do that. Expect me to be by your workplace in a few days. It should be done by then. I will bring by how you pay as well.” Whitebeard nodded, that sounded good.
He was about to say goodbye, when the call ended, the other, Ace apparently, hanging up. Now, he just needed to wait. It was 3 days later, when he was in a meeting with his children, knowing it was only a limited amount of time before Teach would do what he needed to do, his children were getting nervous as well, which he got. If Teach launched this before them, which they were unable to do now, they would go bankrupt and he would need to shut the company down. He couldn't let that happen.
But as they were in the midst of the meeting, the door opened, and the same man from those weeks ago came in, Ace if that was an honest name, and he was humming as he read a newspaper. Thatch frowned as he came inside. “Who’re you? This is a closed meeting.” Ace just waved his hand at him, before he handed him the newspaper. “Here you go, all taken care off. The items are back in their place.” Ace then turned around, waving his hand. “You have my number.” Then he was gone. Again, how did Ace do this? There were many closed doors to get here. As he was gone, Izou looked at him. “Who was that?” Whitebeard shook his head a bit. “Someone who wants to help.” Everyone nodded, looking unsure.
Whitebeard then looked down at the newspaper, which was from a town over, and the side it was opened to had him blink. Man (37) accused of murder, taken into custody. Refuses charges. And under it was a picture of Teach. Had Ace really managed this? He looked at Haruta. “Daughter, go check the missing items.” Haruta frowned. “Why?” Whitebeard shook his head. “Just please, go check.” Haruta nodded and did, and everyone left looked at him. “What was that about?” Whitebeard sighed, before he moved to show the page to the others, who blinked. “He…” Started Rakuyo. “He killed someone?” Whitebeard didn't know, but had a feeling he didn't, and Ace had made this happen.
It took a few minutes, everyone asking questions between themselves, when Haruta came back, shocked. “Everything is back! We have everything!” Everyone blinked. “How?” Asked Thatch, and everyone looked to be wondering. Before Marco frowned, looking at him. “Did that guy have anything to do with this? He said the items were back to their place, yoi.” Whitebeard just shook his head, not wanting to tell he had asked a man for hire for help, he would speak to Marco later, and maybe tell him. He then opened the newspaper more, to go to the next page, to read the entire segment, when a piece of paper fell down. It had a number on it and a bank account number. This was how he would pay. He quickly took the paper and put it in his pocket. He would handle this later. For now, everything was fine.
He wished he could thank Ace. Or maybe he could, he did have his number. He would think about this.

A month later, Whitebeard sat in the meeting room with Marco and the ones he wanted this deal with, which was a brother trio. Two brothers were already here, which was Luffy and Sabo, both very young. Now they were waiting for the last brother. The three brothers were a part of, and co-CEOs and owners, of Straw Hats International, who had a business across the entire world and had many connections. While they had a lot, they were mainly interested in the generators they offered, as they were the only ones who sold that kind, a special one that ran on little and powered a lot. They also wanted to get affiliated with them as they were fast growing, and maybe fuse their businesses a bit, to help each other, as Straw Hat International had a lot to offer for them. They really needed this deal, and he hoped for the best.
But as they were waiting, the door opened and Ace came through, which had him blink. Why was he here? Before he could voice it, Ace moved a hand to Luffy’s head, ruffling his hair. “Sorry I’m late. Meeting went overtime.” Sabo shook his head with a chuckle. “It’s fine, you made it.” Ace nodded and sat down, and Whitebeard was shocked. Ace was… Ace was with Sabo and Luffy? He was with that huge company? He was a CEO and owner of that company? Ace then hummed. “Let’s get this meeting on the way.” Whitebeard nodded and he looked at Marco, who looked shocked as well. He had told Marco he had hired a man, the only one knowing it. And he got it.
Whitebeard then took a breath and looked at the three brothers. “Yes, let’s do that.” They then started the meeting and it went by fine, and when it was ending, Ace looked at his two brothers. “I like this idea. What do you think?” Sabo nodded. “I like this as well. They seem nice.” Ace nodded. “Agreed.” Ace had said he was a good man, so that didn't surprise him. “We have a deal?” He asked. Ace nodded. “Yes, I believe we do.” That made him glad, this was a good deal for them. They then signed the start papers, and then they would have a meeting later with their lawyers, where the rest would be signed, before they shook hands, and the three brothers left.
When they were gone, Marco looked at him. “Was that…” Whitebeard nodded. “Yes, it was. That was Ace.” This was a huge shock, Ace actually had a legit business as well with his brothers. He didn't know what to do with this information. He decided to do nothing, and advised Marco to do the same.
When the next week came, they had the second meeting, and when the lawyers were happy and left, it was just the three brothers, him, and Curiel, who were good with legal things. Marco was supposed to join instead, but had a meeting he needed to go to. Curiel also didn't seem to recognize Ace, which was good.
As they were speaking about what to do, how to use both sides well, Ace moved to stand up as his phone rang. “Excuse me.” He then walked to the door as he answered. “Hello, you've reached Ace. What may I do for you?” He heard as the door closed. They then continued to speak about small things, before Ace came back in with a sigh, looking at Sabo and Luffy. “I need to take this call. Important business meeting. You can continue this Sabo. Luffy, be nice.” The two nodded and Ace looked at him. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Whitebeard nodded, and Ace left. They then continued, and Curiel left after a bit as he had his second job at the hospital to get to.
And as he was gone and he was about to start up the meeting, Sabo spoke. “Cut the crap. We know you know. Ace told.” Whitebeard blinked, so the two knew what Ace was. “Why did he need to leave?” Luffy smiled. “Meeting! He has a lot of meetings. We’re used to it.” Sabo gave him a look. “I am curious as to why you needed him. You're a good man, I never would have believed you would call a man for hire.” Whitebeard had thought that before he called Ace, but his help had been very welcomed. Things would have been different if he hadn't called Ace. “We needed his help.” Sabo nodded. “Many do.” Whitebeard didn't doubt that. Sabo then hummed. “And just because you needed his help, doesn't make you a bad person or mean anything bad.” Whitebeard nodded, he could agree with that. Ace seemed kind, and he had a legit business with his brothers.
They then spoke about the fusion, and after a bit, the door opened and Ace came back inside. “Sorry about that, important meeting. I need to leave in an hour, so let’s try to wrap this up.” Whitebeard nodded, and they did, and managed to wrap it up within half an hour, and when they had, Ace leaned back in his chair. “That went well.” It had gone by fine, but now that that was over, he had some questions for Ace. “Could I ask you a question?” Ace hummed. “About this meeting or my work?” Whitebeard took a breath. “Your… work.” Ace nodded and looked at Luffy and Sabo. “Go wait outside. I’ll come soon.” The two brothers nodded and headed out.
When they were out, Ace looked at him. “So, you have a question, or a few questions.” Whitebeard nodded. “Yes. Did… did Teach kill a man?” Ace shook his head. “No, he took a fall for me. I pinned it on him.” That was amazing, they had found fingerprints and DNA on the scene of the crime that belonged to Teach. “How?” Ace hummed. “I work my own way.” Whitebeard nodded, sure he wouldn't get anything else out of the man on that issue. He had more questions though. “Was Teach the one who wanted me dead?” Ace nodded. “Yes, he was.” Whitebeard nodded, that was sort of good to know, so there wasn't anyone else out there who wanted him dead, who was close to him.
Ace was very calm about this, so Whitebeard wanted to ask a few more questions. “How did you do it? How did you know where to put the items?” He asked, and Ace hummed. “I just know things. And I do a lot of research.” Whitebeard nodded, and was about to ask another question, when the phone to Ace made a sound, and Ace took it up. “Do continue. Just a message.” Whitebeard nodded. “How do your brothers feel about your work?” Ace hummed as he typed. “They're okay with it. I am surprised you are so calm about this. I am a criminal for doing this according to the law.” Whitebeard shook his head. “You apparently have a legit business as well, and you helped us. You came in our hour of need.” Ace nodded. “I do that, many hate my work, even though I have helped them.” Whitebeard nodded. “I can maybe understand that. But, we have a deal with you now, which is what we wanted and needed.” Ace nodded. “Oh, I know that. We could have easily said no, but as I said, you're a good man.” That he was glad to hear.
Whitebeard nodded. “I can imagine you do a background check on every person you make a deal with.” Ace nodded. “I do. But I had already done one on you, so I didn't need to do it this time.” That was true. He was glad he had met Ace when he had, that he had given his card and all that. He didn't regret anything. And yes, Ace was a criminal, but he did good things and it was obvious he didn't do everything people wanted of him, If he had, Whitebeard would have been dead, but he wasn't. He believed Ace was a good person as well. He might be a criminal, but he felt Ace was a ‘good criminal’, if that existed. But if it did, Ace was with them.
---x---
Two weeks later, Whitebeard walked beside his children and Ace. They were heading for a restaurant to talk about some business. The others joined since they were heading out to town in a bit, which would leave him and Marco to speak with Ace. They were in the city now, and the big screens were on and creating many distractions, but they were used to it so it didn't bother him too much. But as they were heading towards the restaurant, Ace’s phone made a sound and when Ace looked at it, he frowned a bit, before he held a hand up, still looking at his phone. “Excuse me for a bit, be right back.” Before he could question it, Ace ran off. He could see the others were curious as to why Ace had run off, but Whitebeard just said he needed to do something.
They then stood and spoke for a bit, and after 10 minutes, Whitebeard saw Ace coming from around a corner, on his phone. He was about to speak, to ask why he had run off, when Ace lifted his phone and pressed a button. And as he did, the big screens around them started to show a video of a man selling young girls, and it had him blink and shocked, and then he heard a commotion to his left, and looked over to see the cops having the man who was on the screen in cuffs and people were screaming on how horrible the man was. This was amazing, how Ace managed to do this. He now got why Ace had run off, he did it to make this happen. Ace was clearly a man of many talents.
Ace then moved over to them. ”So, what now? I just had a small urgent thing.” Ace was amazing, he really was. He was making the world better. It didn't seem like the others understood Ace had done this, aside from Marco, which was good. He was sure everyone wouldn't accept this, what Ace was doing. He knew many were against informants and mercenaries. He would try to bring it up. But for now, they had a small meeting they needed to have, and would do so over dinner. So, they headed to the restaurant they had a table at, being a bit late, but it was fine, and they sat down. The others, aside from Marco, didn't stay long as they weren't needed for this. They didn't like work the same way as they did, and just he and Marco were needed for this, and of course Ace.
But as they were eating, a cop came inside the room, and spoke to the manager, and he got a bad feeling, especially when the manager pointed to them. The cop came over, turning to look at them. “Hello, I am looking for Ace D Portgas. Is he here?” Whitebeard blinked, sure this wasn't a good thing now, and was on his way to speak. But before he could speak, Ace did, turning to look at the cop. “I’m sorry, no. You just missed him. I am Alexander Beaverhausen, can I do anything to help?” Whitebeard blinked. Ace spoke as if that really was his name, in confidence. The cop shook his head. “No, you can’t. Can you have him give me a call?” Said the cop as he handed out a card to Ace, who took it with a smile. “Sure. Hope you have a good day.”
The cop then left, and before he could speak, Marco did. “Alexander Beaverhausen? As in Anastasia Beaverhausen?” Ace nodded as he smiled. “Yes! You got that one? Very few do.” Marco blinked. “You do realize someone will get it and you will be busted, yoi.” Ace chuckled. “Nah, even if they do, I will just say I was joking. No one will mind it.” Marco gave a slow nod, not looking to believe that completely. He then sent a look at Ace and Marco. “Who is this Alexander and Anastasia Beaverhausen?” Ace chuckled. “From an old show in the late 90s. Anastasia Beaverhausen is a pseudonym for one of the characters.” That was risky, if a cop one day got it. “That is risky, Ace.” Ace waved his hand. “Nah. It’s just fun.” Whitebeard still had a bad feeling about this. He knew Ace was a criminal for doing what he did, but he wasn't a bad criminal, at least in his mind. But Ace was very carefree about this.
Ace then looked at the card. “I will call in an hour or so.” Whitebeard blinked. “You will call?” Ace nodded. “I promised to give myself the card, so I will call. Probably nothing. It is usually nothing, they just think I am a witness, and I say no, I am not. I wasn't wherever they thought I was, as I have an alibi.” Whitebeard frowned. “What’s your alibi?” Ace hummed. “I was with my brothers, they always help me out, if I can’t use them, I have others.” Whitebeard nodded, Ace was prepared. Which was good. He didn't want to see Ace winding up in prison.
They then ate their food and had fun, and talked about some business, before they left after a couple hours. And as they were heading on, Ace moved to take the card out. “Let me just take this call, before it is too late.” Whitebeard nodded, and Ace typed the number into his phone, before moving it to his ear, and spoke into it. But as Ace did this, he took another phone out, and started typing on that as well. He wasn't surprised Ace had multiple phones, he needed it for his work. It wasn't much he heard from Ace, mostly being yes and no’s. After a few minutes, they walked as Ace spoke and typed, Ace hung up. “Let me just type this… and done.” Ace then put both phones away. “Nothing special, just a follow up question to the human trafficker as someone thought they saw me. They did not. It’s all fine now.” That was good to hear. They then walked back to the office, where Ace left them and headed home, them being done now and had spoken about what they needed to speak about.
When Ace was gone, Marco hummed as he looked at him. “He is taking a few risks here, yoi.” Whitebeard nodded, he agreed. Ace was. “I know, but he seems to have control, son.” It did seem like that. He was just glad Marco didn't seem to mind Ace being an informant/mercenary. He hoped he would get to know Ace more. He seemed to be a man of many talents.
And that's the first chapter of this version!
I hope you enjoyed this! And I can’t wait for this story to move along! Some of Ace’s backstory will come up in the next chapter, and more will come later
