Chapter Text

Age: 5

Youth was always rewarded in the castle. General Arlin James especially rewarded it, giving him quotes every day about how he should ‘appreciate his youth’ and whatever. Chip always laughed when he brought it up, giggling as he squirms in the General’s hold.

“You know,” General Arlin said one day “We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing!” He pokes Chip’s side again, listening to the boy giggle until they both collapse into loud laughter. Once Chip finally is able to catch his breath, he can’t help but question it.

“But, you and Drey are old? You guys play all the time!”

General Arlin’s smile doesn’t waver, but Chip watches his eyebrows knit together. “That’s different, my boy! We’re training to protect our king - our kingdom! We must get stronger now to protect you too!” Chip matched General’s Arlin smile.

Now that he was a prince (Yes, a prince!) He needed that protection. Him and his new sister - Elizabeth. He wasn’t sure how Elizabeth was taken in, but Chip thinks he would remember that day for the rest of his life.

He doesn’t remember how he got there, but in some weary port town, he was standing by the sea. He was staring out, watching as the waves crashed into the port. At said port, there was a ship. It was a beautiful dark red – a wood he has never encountered before. It didn’t compare to the people getting off of the boat though.

They all were unique in their own way. A fishman, a giant, he thinks he saw a guy with an eyepatch. He couldn’t help but stare. He felt a certain draw to them, a need to speak with them. Before he even knew it, his feet were slowly stepping to them. It was something greater than fate, he thinks now, something more. It had to be, when his hands gripped the giant’s pants leg and didn’t let go. It had to be something greater for him to be brought here. To live as a prince.

But that was in the past now. A not too distant memory to remind him that he was forever grateful to them for taking him.

Here, in a place where his youth and merriment was rewarded greatly with their own joy.

Yet today… Today, his youth was being rewarded by playing alone in his room. It frustrated him to no end that he couldn’t be out there, annoying Elizabeth. Sure. Elizabeth had a friend over. Sure, his attempts to annoy her made Elizabeth beyond angry. But he wanted to play too!

He sat on the floor of his bedroom, coloring in some blank paper with blue. Drawing the ocean was always fun for him. He liked to make it different colors too. The creme walls decorated with professional paint of the sea was where he got a lot of inspiration. He sometimes noticed new things inked with fresh paint. He knew the advisor, Mr. Tidestrider, loved ocean life. He was a triton, so of course. He added many… shrimp? Craw-fish? Something like that.

A knock at his door startled him out of his admiration. Elizabeth never knocked… So was it Arlin? Or maybe it was the king himself. If it was, he surely wasn’t dressed properly. His hair was a wild mess, not combed after sleep. His clothes, what the advisor called a poet's shirt- this shirt with frilly sleeves. It was an off white brown color, made that way so when he played it wasn’t too noticeable. Brown trousers made of soft fabric, not silk, just soft. He pauses his drawing to get up and open the door. He steps over the legos he was playing with earlier, having not cleaned them up yet. He would get to it soon. Yes.

The person behind the door was in fact not Arlin, or the King. Instead, it was a girl that looked his age and was taller than him. She wore a pink dress, regal and perfect for her. Jewels lined the collar of it, glittering beautifully in the light. The dress had layers, one lace to show the beautiful darker pink that was the skirt. Her sleeves were also puffy, he noted with some sign of relief. Their eyes met, and the girl dipped into a low curtsy. Chip glanced over her shoulder, finding no one else in sight. She spoke before he could even begin to ask her any questions.

“Hello, your royal highness.” Her voice was confident and strong, though it was light. “My name is Jay Ferin. I am the second daughter of Jayson Ferin, younger sister of Ava Ferin. My father and King Rose both sent me here to meet you, the new prince of Rosenbush. It is a pleasure to meet you.”

Chip had to remind himself to close his mouth. Jay, she said her name was? Honestly, Chip couldn’t take his eyes off of her.

She had perfect form!

Chip’s eyes glance over how she poises herself, how deep the bow was, even how she carries herself. He could only hope that he would get to that level.

He’s only been in etiquette classes for a few weeks by now. His teacher, Audry, has been trying to instill basic manners in him ever since – but they’re really hard! He tries, he really does, but none of this is natural to him. He doesn’t have the skills down at all- all he can manage to do back is a meager bow himself.

It’s clumsy, his hand definitely isn’t placed in the correct place, is his head supposed to be down? Up? Does he look her in the eye? Even with every question he has they don’t get answered. Well, at least she doesn’t laugh at him as he stands straight once again.

“It uh, is a pleasure to meet you, your highness Ferin. C-Come in?” He steps back, allowing the large heavy door to shut once she steps inside.

He watches Jay look around his room, his hands fidget with the hem of his clothes as he watches her place a hand directly on the small snake that was painted on his bedroom wall. Elizabeth painted it, thinking it was scary enough to give him nightmares. (it wasn’t)

Once the door shut fully with a thud, Chip’s shoulders sagged as he sighed. “Uhh, I was just drawing. You're free to join me? You also don't have to call me ‘your highness'.” air quotes were generously used as he stuck his tongue out.  “Just Chip is fine!”

She looked back to him and shyly nodded. “Only if you get to call me just Jay, okay?” her ears turned red as she fiddled with a stray piece of her sleeve. He smiled brightly, sticking his hand out.

“Duh! We’re best friends now!” Jay laughed, shaking her head and giggling.  She did take his hand, shaking it between giggles.

“We just met, dummy!”

“No, We gotta! We don’t use the royalties anymore. That's my best friend status.”  Jay opened her mouth to argue, but instead relaxed with a small smile, all shyness gone at that moment.

“Do you want to play pirates with me?” She looked surprised, but her grin was brighter than the sun when she agreed so enthusiastically. Chip thought her hair would come loose from the ponytail she sported.

After that, the two played together every time Elizabeth and Ava hung out, which was every other week. The two really got along as they shared a lot of interests; the sea, mainly. Chip had talked about sailing, about epic tales where he ties down ropes in a storm. He stood on his bed, reenacting some parts with a fake crew. The thought of it made Chip's heart pound, his limbs felt like they were filled with electricity! He can't help the giggle that rips through him.

Jay liked the sea for its people. She thought their culture was amazing. Furthermore, they worshiped a different god than her nation. They worshiped Lunadeyis, while the kingdom of Raft worshiped Aster. The solar mother, as Jay’s family called her. No one in Rosebush had outstanding beliefs, the country formed by outlaws and turned into a respectable place. It wasn’t a bad place, but it was more lax in rules than other countries. As far as chip knew, the country didn’t worship just one. There should be temples to both as well as other gods and goddesses in the capital. Much more in other towns too.

They had many more adventures like that, teaching each other new things. Sometimes their culture, or something about themselves.

One instance Arlin likes to retell, years and years later, was when Chip was six and Jay eight, and Jay was allowed to learn about makeup for the first time. She excitedly wanted to show her best friend how pretty she looked. She offered to do his. By the time Arlin had checked on them, Chip was already smothered in some simple foundation and lipstick. As well as one continuous line of eyeliner. He didn't stop laughing for a week.

Summary:

Chip meets someone new and dangerous

i love niklaus Hendrix. He can do no wrongs in my eyes

Chapter Text

On one sweltering Summer’s day, Chip sat miserable in an uncomfortable chair. The man before him was going on about the right way to introduce yourself in a formal setting, but Chip kept getting distracted by the dangling jewelry on his thick locs. They were golden axes, and among the other charms decorating his hair, these stood out the most to him. Elizabeth loved them as well, he heard her ask Chey to put her hair in thick locs to put her own charms in. Audry sighed, placing his book down behind him on his desk.

“Young prince,” He begins, his voice confident. “You may want to pay attention. The ball His Majesty is throwing here soon is going to be partly in your honor. You must be able to talk to other nobility properly.” He sighed, a hand rising to pinch the bridge of his nose. Silver eyes open to stare at him, and he shifts even more uncomfortably. Audry is his etiquette teacher, and a very good one. They are able to reign in his… Rambunctious personality. He tried to play a prank on him once, and that ended up with water on him instead. He learned Audry is very good at finding tricks.

Chip, in his stubborn glory, crosses his arms and pouts.

“Young prince.” His tone shifts slightly to tired acceptance. “Can you at least think of a date to bring? If you do not want to listen to my lectures today.” That made Chip spring up in his chair, hands gripping the arms of it now.

“A DATE?!” He screeched, his high voice grating and cracking. “Nu-uh. I’m not getting a date. Mr. Finn said you kiss your dates. Kissing is gross.” he made various gagging noises to make sure he got his point across.

“Well, what about Miss Ferin? Think of it like your little playdates when the Ferin’s visit.” Audry suggested that was followed by even louder gagging noises.

“She’s my best friend! I don’t wanna date her. Gross!” Clearly fed up, Audry crosses his arms. At this point he was used to the prince's tantrums. How a six year old could have as many as Chip does was no surprise. He was spoiled, always getting what he wanted and he didn’t even realize it.

“Christopher.” The full name made Chip stop, cracking open an eye he didn’t realize he closed to look at his teacher. Audry, with his thick locs and brown skin that glinted golden under the sun, pointed at him with a pen. “I must implore you, I am not encouraging you to actively date Miss Ferin. General Arlin would have my head, honestly. No, a date is just a formal term. You may bring her as your best friend. No kissing required.” A smirk dances on his face as a deep chuckle rumbles through him. “Honestly your highness, if you were listening you would understand that.” he grabs the book he had from his desk again, flipping to where he left off.

“You do have to send Miss Ferin a letter soon asking her to be your date.” Chip nodded, understanding. After a moment, the silence started to become too heavy. “You should ask General Arlin to help you with it. From my understanding, your writing skills need a lot of work.” It was true, though Chip grumbled about it anyway. He didn’t know how to read or write before he came here. So his teachers made it a top priority. Audry didn’t have many, if at all, written components. So they focused more on making sure he didn’t embarrass himself and get scorned by adults who are as mean as hornets.

A gasp ripped out of Chip, and he almost knocked himself back in the chair from how hard he jumped. “Can I go now?” after a moment he quickly added; “Pleeaassee?” He clasped his hands together, fluttering eyelashes to beg to be let out early. Audry cocks his head to the side, pointy ears twitching in what Chip guesses is amusement. His begging never works on him, but it’s always worth a try.

“You know what, sure. I’ll call it homework.” Chip’s pout turned into a grin, which Audry matched. Launching off his chair with power that almost knocked it to the floor, began to run off. While opening the large ornate door, he pauses and looks back.

“Thanks again! You’re one of my favorite teachers.” And while leaving the door open, runs out and takes a sharp left. His feet hit the ground hard and fast, his footsteps loud and thumping as he runs recklessly down the halls. He can barely hear Audry’s sigh, though it sounded lighter than earlier. He thinks he heard Audry laugh. Nothing loud, Chip isn’t even sure if it was a laugh or if he was clearing their throat. He takes a turn before he can think more on the subject.

Chip has been here a year and was still finding new passages. New shortcuts that cut through entire sections. The palace was a maze he was still navigating. Yet he feels that he got to Arlin's office in record time..His breathing was heavy, sweat making his shirt stick to his skin. It took him longer than he would like to admit for him to catch his breath. Now, he stood in front of the black wooden door, whittled designs creating flowers and vines all over it. It was polite to knock, he remembered. Bringing his hand up, he paused. He heard voices. Was the king in there as well? He strained to listen, able to hear the deep baritone of Arlin and another one that was unfamiliar. King Rose’s sounded flat and unamused. He came to the quick conclusion of what was going on, and stopped. He took deeper breaths to clear his mind, which helped his shaking breath. Though he was already here, he decided he might as well. If anything, he’ll be given a time to come back. He was grateful he decided, he almost lost his nerve. But joking with Jay at a boring ball sounded too good to pass up. He knocks as loud as he can, and waits until he hears the King call out.

“Come in.” His voice was recognizable even through two inches of thick oak. Chip grabbed the sturdy metal ring at the left side of the ornate door and pulled as hard as he could. It opened with a creak, and he was met with three tall men. He knew two of them, but the third was an obsidian tiefling he has never seen before. What he wore had purple sleeves obviously made of fine silk, smooth and lustrous. They puffed out and gathered at the wrist with a cuff, much like Jay’s had when they first met. His figure was clear, which made Chip think he had a corset on. The corset itself looked like leather, and was part of what looked like a vest that had gold embroidery. Long dark hair with two braids framing his face lead Chip to his curled horns. Decorated with golden jewelry, Chip feels that pang of envy again at it. It reminds him of Audry’s, yet these are more attached to the horn and it looks permanent. His pants were a darker shade of purple, with a golden sash at the waist. It was so long, it almost skimmed the ground. Leather boots shifted with him as he turned to look at Chip.

His eyes stood out the most. They were sharp. Yet so dark and deep they couldn’t hold any life of their own. They saw everything. They see his deepest wants. They paralyzed him, making him feel like an insect pinned to a wall. They see him. It left him feeling raw and exposed. Standing in the doorway, he crosses his arms. Hoping to seem small enough that the tiefling doesn’t notice him more than needed.

With all his charm and looks, there was no mistake to the power this man emitted. It was almost a smell. How it smells right before a storm, or the taste of salt in the air before a huge wave crashes. It left him buzzing, and it was all in all an uncomfortable experience. The tiefling glances down at Chip, and the faintest of smiles ghosts across his face. It looked like the man recognized him, but that couldn’t be true at all. The tiefling looked at him like he was a playtoy he forgot about at the bottom of the box. New and old at the same time.

“Hello.” Chip forced out, a small bow accompanying him. “I can uh, come back?” He hated how small his voice sounded, but it was the unfortunate circumstances of being the smallest in the room of three tall and imposing men.

“No, I was just leaving.” The tiefling’s smile was charming, and it made him feel a bit more at ease. Maybe he wasn’t so scary. His honeyed voice gently sails across the room. “I’m sure King Rose wants to think about our deal a bit more anyway.” He bowed deeply, arm sweeping to the side in a grand gesture. The king clenched his fists, looking to Arlin and back to the tiefling. He doesn’t remember the king ever looking so… Angry before. His face was turning red, eyes scrunched and glaring at both Arlin and the tiefling. Arlin looked no better, hands up in surrender as he sat in his chair behind his desk. King Rose was on the other side of the room from the tiefling as the two stared at each other.

The tiefling stood straight again, and with a passing smirk he turned to face Chip. He takes the few steps it took to cross the room and with every step he takes, he can feel a wave of fear slowly creep up from his toes. It was confusing to the poor kid, every fiber of his being was telling him; run. Run far away. Yet his heart couldn’t get the courage.

Kneeling in front of Chip. the tiefling bowed his head.

“Hello, my prince.” His words were sweet, and the tone was just as. He heard a chair scrape, and a mumble of voices. For some reason, he couldn’t hear them clearly. “My name is Hendrix, I am an envoy from the black sea. The Sakura kingdom, and I serve my King.” A scoff was heard from behind Hendrix, but it fell on deaf ears. It felt like the waves that he smelled were crashing so loudly in his ears only the drifting calm of his voice flitted through.

“It is a pleasure to meet you. I apologize I can’t stay for long, however I can safely say we will be meeting again soon.” His hand reached up and pressed gently on his head, ruffling his hair. It felt like a static shock to every hair follicle, causing the hair on the back of his neck to stand straight up. A voice shouted, and Hendrix made a sound that the prince doesn’t think could even be human. It was high and a trill, it sounded like something a cat makes.

When the silence ran on for a minute, Chip realized he needed to reply. “It’s okay.” he mumbled, looking down at their feet. The hand left his hair and suddenly the sound returned to the room. His head jerked up in surprise and he saw Hendrix suddenly across the room again. He stood in front of Arlin who was standing. Something close to anger and worry creased his brow as the two stared each other down.

“Well,” Hendrix huffed, “I think I have overstayed my welcome.”

“Yes.” Rose clipped out, teeth bared a bit. “I think you have.” The second sentence was spoken more softly, as he turned away from him. Hendrix turned on a dime and calmly sauntered out. Once the door closed behind him, King Rose yelled a string of words that sounded angry and obscene. And he said them in a different language! The words were guttural and deep, syllables harsh and the words sounded backwards to common. He stomped over to the window that cast the early morning light in.

“Sire, in front of a kid…” He began, the placating gesture back. “Are you sure about this? He may be my friend, but we don’t know what he wants.”

“I don’t know-!” he whirled around to continue his argument, but stopped when his eyes met Chip’s. The anger and frustration caused kind eyes to look as sharp as Hendrix's did. It almost scared Chip, in a different way than Hendrix did. The anger King Rose had was not directed towards him in the slightest, yet it scared him. It was different, he has never gotten angry, and it was unpredictable. His brain felt a little foggy, but with each moment without Hendrix there, it cleared little by little.

With a withering sigh, King Rose deflated and looked back to Arlin. The King walked over to his friend, he rested a hand on the back of the grand chair Arlin was sitting in. He said something else in that strange deep language Chip couldn’t understand, and watched Arlin’s face twist in emotions he didn’t understand.

“Chip.” King Rose looked back to him, and Chip felt himself straighten a bit. “My apologies about the way I acted, it wasn’t fair to have you witness that. Will you forgive me?”

“Oh. Yeah, it’s fine!” He grinned wide, his left canine missing from him wiggling it out days prior. He wondered why the king apologized to him, but left it to some obscure rule he hasn’t learned yet.

King Rose had a strange look on his face after that, and he smiled sadly at Chip. “Thank you. Now I am going to escort Hendrix to his carriage. Hopefully his streak of ‘getting lost’ wont end with Elizabeth meeting him.” The air quotes were heavy, King Rose rolling his eyes as he said it. He gave a final look to Arlin, who hadn't looked away from the king. He turns away after a moment, heading to the door Chip still had at his back. As he passed Chip, he ruffled his hair. It felt different than the shock Hendrix gave. A comforting warmth that relaxed him as much as it encouraged him.

The door clicks behind him, and now his plan could continue. Despite the fact he had wanted this in the first place, Chip couldn’t help but feel awkward. What could he even say, when Arlin was still staring at the place King Rose had stood. That confusing look never leaving his face. Chip hoped he could understand, but his objective hung in front of him. He clears his throat, hoping Arlin just looks at him.

He does, he shakes his head and seems to remember Chip was there in the first place. “Oh!” He laughs, a forced sound even Chip could recognize. “Sorry, Chip! Now, what can I do for you?” The smile he plastered on was even more fake. Chip decided his dad figure needed a break, and went on with his plan without mentioning it.

“I wanted to write to Jay.” He stated, nodding as if that explained everything. Arlin nodded, and Chip grinned.

“Has your handwriting become worse?” He tilted his head, a mocking tone and a much more real smile on his face. Chip frowned, no, he didn’t understand!

“No!” he stomped his foot, exasperated that he didn’t put the dots together. “I want you to help me write to her! For the ball!” Realization dawned on his face, and Arlin nodded seriously.

“Of course, you need to properly ask her to be your date.” A pause, and then he asked “Do you… Like her?” it was hesitant, unsure, and Chip wanted to gag. He thought his face was a mask of pure indifference but Arlin’s booming laugh made him realize maybe his poker face needed work.

“Sorry, sorry, girls are gross huh?”

“The grossest.”

He laughs, that hearty laugh that makes him feel happy too. “So, I assume you need a piece of paper suited for this grand question?” Chip nodded, and Arlin chuckled a bit as he got into one of the drawers in his desk. Chip, curious, trekked over to the side of the desk and watched him dig through papers. He pulled out a sheet of paper that had gold on the outside, but what really caught his eye was the pen.

The fountain pen was beautiful, a black base with gold trimming on it. It was decorated in raised gold that looked like leaves and the cap was a deep maroon rose. As he took off the cap, the nib had dried blue ink on it that contrasted beautifully to the stark white of the paper. Arlin set up the station, paper set up in the middle of the desk and the pen on the right, with the cap sat perfectly on the left.

“Cmon now, it’s not gonna write itself!” He scoots his chair back, patting his legs. Chip took the invitation wholeheartedly, almost jumping onto the goliath’s lap. It was spacious to sit in, as he was smaller than normal children. His stature was healthy, yet it was small.

“Now, one thing to remember,” Arlin started, gently putting Chip's arms in the correct position to hold the fountain pen. “Is to not put too much pressure on it. It could bend the nob, making it slanted.” Chip held onto the fountain pen gently, trying to mimic how he had seen Arlin and King Rose with it. Arlin gently moves his fingers until he’s holding it correctly. The smile Arlin gives makes Chip even more excited to write this letter.

“So, is this a whole letter, or just the question?” Chip gasped at the insulation.

“We haven’t written this week! I gotta tell her everything. Plus, if I don’t, she’ll get mad at me.” he pouted, Jay loved to know everything that happened outside her walls. She admitted that her dad was strict, afraid his precious daughters would be harmed. So she demanded to know things, or else she would ‘go coo coo bananas’ being stuck with her sister all the time.

Arlin’s booming laugh almost made Chip jump out of his skin, but he joined in soon after. “Alright, let’s see what you have in mind!”

‘Dear Jay, ‘

“Now hold on.” Arlin interrupted. Chip almost throws the pen in a jolt. “This is a proper letter, yeah? So you have to use proper titles. Like her Highness, Jay Ferin. You two may be best friends, but unfortunately you have responsibilities. Finn wouldn’t be happy, and neither would King Jayson. This may be a very friendly letter, but it has to be formal.” He took the paper he had already written on and replaced it with another fancy golden lined paper. It took a moment for Chip to think of the proper words, but he started writing enthusiastically.

‘To your Highness Princess Jay Ferin,

Usually, I would go on and on about things that happened this week, but I have an important question that takes’–

“How do you spell precedent?” He fumbled the word, sure of its meaning but not of how to fully write or say it. Arlin spelled it out without laughing, surprisingly. He had such a soft look in his eyes that Chip is sure that’s what a dad would look like. Is Arlin his dad? He’s the most like one, from the stories he gathers.

‘–Precedent. King Rose of the Rose Kingdom is holding a ball in both Elizabeth and mine’s honor, as well as the beginnings of a truce with the Undersea. In all my expert opinion, I think this will be super boring without you; so you are invited to be my date! It’s easy, you wait at the bottom of some stairs and we dance a little and BOOM. We get to hang out all night without anyone telling us not to!

I hope the letter finds you well. Since the ball is coming much quicker, Arlin says our playdates will have to be rescheduled.’

The rest of the letter goes on to detail things that happened while he waited for her reply, and about how Arlin thought that he liked her. Various expletives were used. Once he was finished, Arlin folded it up the nicest he could and put it in another fancy envelope. Handing it to him, he instructs Chip to write the address and recipient as usual.

Once everything was said and done, the letter was tucked nicely in Arlin’s jacket pocket. Granted the jacket is the only thing covering his top half, but it was proper enough for him. “This’ll be safe until the next run of the dolphins. Should reach raft by tomorrow afternoon.” The wide smile that graces Chip’s face has him buzzing with excitement.

“Thanks, Dad!” It is said so easily, as right as rain and as easy as breath, Chip stole the wind from Arlin’s sails. He didn’t say a word, just scooped up the small child and hugged him. A hand cradles the back of his head as Chip wraps himself around Arlin in the best way he can. A shuddering breath is more felt than heard.

“I’m sorry,” Chip starts, but is stopped with the furious headshakes from the man holding him.

“Nothing to be sorry for, Chip. I just…” He took another breath, much more steady this time. “I am just very happy to be called ‘Dad’ by you. I think of you as a son, so it makes me feel very happy.”

Chip’s grin could crack his face as he closed his eyes, inhaling the smell of the coat his face rested against. The two stood there for quite a while, relishing in the joy of family.

Chapter Text

The week of the ball is one of the most chaotic weeks that he has ever been a part of. Tailor appointments, rigorous dancing lessons, and most importantly, corresponding outfits with Jay. The letters were paid to get to their destinations quicker, so Chip didn’t think the dolphins minded too much. Especially since he snuck one fish that old man Earl certainly wouldn’t miss.

The calmest time was dinner, yet the large table felt empty. Arlin was busy with preparations, King Rose was in the Undersea to get them the most comfortable transport possible. This wasn’t usual, but the treaty this ball could open was incredibly important. While the Rose Kingdom wasn’t lacking in funds, they basically had no water fairing vessels other than civilians and ‘personal’ ones. King Rose found no need for them unless you were traveling.

Rufus was currently on leave with his wife, Finn was with King Rose. So the only people not busy was the two children. They sat across from one another, Chip idly pushing green beans around his plate. Elizabeth was diligently eating, not saying a word. He wanted to ask again why no one else came, but knew his sister would just fling mashed potatoes at his face again. So he kept the silence going until boredom got the best of him. As it usually did.

“Do you have a date?” Elizabeth only laughed, pointing her fork at him.

“Ava is my date. So we are both takin’ Ferin’s.” Her grin could only be described as excited. “Ava is gonna look so beautiful, no offense to Jay but it’s gonna put your date to shame!” A declaration like that made him gasp in shock. His best friend, used as a diss against him?! Unfathomable!!!

“Nu-uh, Jay is gonna look SO COOL. She’s dressing to impress the undersea people to talk to the supposed Champion they’re brining! So she’s gonna look so cool, us matching in blue and golds!” His hands slam on the table as he stands up. “Dad’s even giving me and since gold is Rose kingdoms color and blue like the sea, Chip thought it was perfect. It was perfect.

“Well Ava is wearing red and gold, for her kingdom and mine! It’s gonna be a real date and everything too!” That was something she had over him, Ava and Elizabeth were dating. They announced it at Ava’s birthday last month. She was nine, so none of the adults took it seriously. However, Chip knew that look in his sister’s eyes. She was determined, and Ava was clearly perfect for his sister. They clashed in beautiful ways, to him. Like sparks in the middle of the night. They always sounded so grown up and mature when they argued respectfully. Always talking it out as best as nine year olds could. They forgive each other no matter what.

“You…. Stink! So it doesn’t matter!” Elizabeth gasped, finally flinging that spoonful of mashed potatoes. The two start tossing chicken, carrots, green beans, potatoes, and even Elizabeth’s drink. The scuffle ended when Chey came out of the kitchen with that stern look in her eye. They almost out ran her too, but Earl was quicker than anyone expected.

The day of the ball, Chip was woken up by red hair and a crushing weight on his chest. Well, his whole body actually. He opens eyes crusty with sleep to look at Jay, who was currently sitting on his stomach, and threw every pillow he had on his body so she could comfortably sit on him.

“Wake up sleepy head! Time to get ready!” She was shoving at the mass of pillows closest to his chest, trying to manually pump life into his drowsy body.

“Ugh.” was all he had to say, too weak to fully push her off. She got the hint, sliding off of him painfully. He yelped, and retaliated with a pillow to her back. Jay merely turned around, glaring at him to shut up his giggling.

“Arlin said the maids are waiting for you, don’t keep them waiting.” she waltzed out of his room, leaving the door ajar. It must have been early, but she got here even earlier. Her hair was in a towel, and her body was dressed in simple, easy to move in clothing. She must have been in the middle of getting her hair done to wake him up. It was kind of her.

He slowly got up, trudging to get bathed and changed into the world's stuffiest clothing.

In five hours, both he and Jay were ready to attend the ball. They sat in a lounge room next to the ballroom, waiting for more guests to arrive before they made their way to make a grand entrance. They had cups of tea, fake accents, and were giggling the entire time. To Arlin’s credit, he only checked on them three times. He was waved off every time, Jay happily stating she’s done this before and knew what to do. Chip, on the other hand, was starting to get nervous.

A wonderful melody begins, so loud they hear it from the ballroom. Wind instruments and violins carrying a simple tune out for people to mingle over. Chip had to put his teacup down he was shaking so much. A mixture of excitement and fear mingled in his gut until the feeling made him want to barf. Easily, Jay slid her gloved hand into one of his shaky ones. She started to twitch her thumb this way and that, getting his attention.

A thumb war broke out, and chip easily overtook Jay with his ‘signature move’ he called digging, But Jay thought it was cheating. She let him have the win pretty easily. He knew it, looking at her with a certain fondness he couldn’t properly express.

A rise to the melody that flits through the cracked door, and he recognizes the tune. It was their cue to line up behind the grand doors, and wait to be called on by the King. First Elizabeth would go down and be introduced, and Ava would meet her after she bowed to the King. They would bow together, and then continue down the grand staircase. Next would be Chip, or ‘Christopher James.’ He would bow to the king, and Jay would meet him. They’d bow together and wander down, and be met with a mix of people. Easy. Easy!

What wasn’t easy, was the fear he felt. He has never been in front of nobility that wasn’t his family, what if they thought ill of him? What if they didn’t see him as a true prince, because he had no actual blood ties to it?
The line to the door is made without any second thought from Chip. He has been practicing for two whole weeks, every meal time. It didn’t take much thought for him at that point. Arlin was at his back, Jay standing beside him. Arlin must have seen the way Chip shook, he wasn’t exactly hiding it. His mercy made him feel better, the large hand in his own was a relief. They didn’t say a word as the music crescendoed, King Rose sweeping the door open in a fluid motion at the climax of the song.

The music softened, a sweet background noise.

“Hello, welcome!” King Rose projected to the crowd. “I am glad you could make it here on such short notice. Thank you for coming, I am excited to share these good times with you all!” He could practically hear the smile in the man’s voice. “I have quite the amount of honored guests today, so please make sure you treat them well!” A small applause, and King Rose lets it go on till he walks down the stairs out of sight. Presumably at the halfway point, still taller than everyone else, he stands to address the crowd once more.

“My guests tonight have come a long way, so please give a warm welcome to them. The elders of the undersea, who have traveled from the Trench to get here. They bring their Champion, a young man named Gillion Tidestrider! The elders have granted us the prestigious honor of being the first of the land dwellers to meet their Champion, so treat him as a special guest!”

Chip looked excitedly to Jay, who did the same. They weren’t allowed to speak, but that didn’t stop their excited looks.

“Next, are ones that have not been introduced to high society yet. My heirs. Two children have been taken care of by this castle for many years, and I trust them with the future of this kingdom. Allow me to introduce you to Elizabeth Lafayette.”

On her cue, Elizabeth walks confidently to the platform. Her maroon suit is beautiful, a golden tie and pocket square tie it together beautifully. It matches exactly to Ava’s, which was stunning. Deep maroon fabric puffed out at the hips, a golden embroidery of her nation's flowers, sunflowers, etched over the skirt’s entirety. It was basically the complete opposite of their outfits, but the blue and gold felt right. Felt like them.

He scoots forward, his breath suddenly not being enough. He takes in more gasping breaths, hoping some relief will come. Merciful, Arlin turns Chip around to face him. The surprise puts a pause on any fear he felt at that moment.

“Son?” He mumbles, so quiet he’s sure no one else can hear them. “You okay?” Chip shakes his head, his hair unable to swish away because of the amount of gel made to make it look perfect. He looked up at Arlin, and all his fears seemed to ease away. Like the feeling of rain after a scorching day, its own wave of calm and relief washing over him. The sand finally settling.

Arlin looks down at him, worried yet oh so proud. He looks above Chip’s head, looking out the door to the crowd of people at the base of the stairs. He could hear King Rose talk about Elizabeth and her incredible mind for strategy. Arlin looked back at Chip, steely determination instead of worry graced his face.

“I’m sorry, I can’t walk with you. This is something you’re going to have to do on your own. There are going to be many times and paths you will take where I can’t walk with you, but I hope you can navigate them to the best of your abilities.” Chip nodded, sort of understanding what he was talking about. This will be a time he has to go alone, but Arlin would always be there. He will always be able to give little speeches to cheer him up. Arlin gave a soft kiss to Chip's hair. “You can do this, sprout.”

He hears his name being called.

Arlin looks down at him again, and then takes his hand again. He leads him the two steps to the door, and gives him a small push. Chip gets the hint. He walks to the platform, confident stride a broody face all to get that mature look. It doesn’t work much when he’s shorter than his date. He tries to avoid the noble stares that pick him apart worse than any priannah could. As he has practiced, he gives a small wave to everyone, slowly heading down the stairs. A small applause goes around as he stands next to the King.

“Christopher James.” The King smiles. It’s not one of the sad ones he wears when he sometimes stares at the two. No, this one is proud and regal. Fitting for the kind King.

“Your Royal Highness.” Chip speaks. It is clear and projected so everyone hears him properly address him.

“Thank you for coming today, Christopher. I have something for you.” He almost jumps in place, excitement over a gift is much more important than looks, surely. A few chuckles rumble across the room, the king not even sparing a glance to them. “Since you have debuted, it is fitting you wear a crown fit for a prince. I bestow upon you this,” A beautiful crown, small and filled with rubies and black diamonds. It had spikes, the pointed ends rounded and jewels embedded into every one. The main part of the crown was engraved, an ocean with a sailing boat, a huge wave coming to it. He bowed his head slightly, in awe at the gift.

“Thank you so much, Your Majesty.” his smile could not be contained.

“You’re very welcome, Chip.” the much more relaxed name put his mind to ease. He couldn’t imagine anything better than this. His bowed head felt heavier with the weight of the crown. Raising up, he did so carefully as to not have the crown fall off.

“His date tonight is none other than his best friend, Jay Ferin of Raft. Please show some respect to her.” He hears the clack of Jay’s heels, the blue skirt embroidered with feathers and flowing sleeves that reached almost to the hem of her dress.
She meets him quickly and he sticks out his elbow as he was taught. The two slowly go down the stairs, and Jay can’t keep her eyes off his crown. He beams, looking for Elizabeth. Her tiara matched his, both the main metal being black and with those beautiful jewels. Hers had rose vines, the main ruby jewel in the center of a rose.

He leads Jay to her and Ava, the two watching King Rose. They both turn to watch Chip and Jay, but the smiles on their faces rival his own. They can’t speak yet until the King is done with his own speech, but he was sure they had much to talk about.

“Next…” King Rose speaks, and Chip honestly tuned him out. At this point he was introducing his court. They all had important duties during the ball, slime was sociallizing and some was trying to get alliances up and running from the ground. He’s heard this speech dozens of times by now, and he couldn’t stand hearing it again.

Too soon did he snap back into place, and the murmur of nobility socializing was drowned out by the orchestra ramping up again. He knew Arlin wasn’t able to talk to him until the end of the party, so he had a while to mess with Elizabeth before she could tattle on him.

“Yours is really cool.” Elizabeth huffs, hand on her hip. “Mine’s cooler though. It has a rose, like the rose! Your sea has nothing on this.”

“Yeah well, my crown has the elusive crawfish on it and I'm not telling you where it is!” Elizabeth gasped, instantly marching closer to get a better look at the engravings on it. He backed up, careful not to trip and bump into someone. “Sorry, Jay and I have to go meet the Champion. Like proper royalty, we have to greet our honored guests.” he grabbed Jay’s hand, placing it in the crook of his arm before pulling her away. It didn’t matter she was in the middle of talking to her sister, he had a point to prove!

She went along willingly once she heard the Champion was involved. Neither of them had heard about any champion of the Undersea, and he had the same last name as Finn! Chip is sure Finn would have mentioned some kind of child prodigy, right?

Looking for the fish people, Chip found the elders at least. The group of fish people with hoods over their heads looked rapt in conversation with an elven man. Chip couldn’t find a proper opening to introduce himself, so he went looking for the Champion instead. Looking around the mass of Elders, he couldn't find a short fish anywhere! He had disappeared in the short few minutes from him being introduced.

Reiterating this all to Jay, they made a plan. Jay will check the right side and Chip the left. This way, when they meet in the middle, they both can do their duties to socialize.

Chip’s side of the room had beautiful white and gold decorations, and the balconies that encase the ball room in a half circle. The food table was there too, but he had to wait until later. Two hours and he could eat, to make sure every guest got their fill. He scans the room, slowly walking the outside and to the center. He talks with several old men, all excited to meet the future of the kingdom. An older woman calls him over, and she pinches his cheek and says some words in a familiar tongue he can’t quite understand. He mingles to everyone elses content, and he hates every moment of it. Sure, at first it was fun to talk like a grown up. Now though, with each passing moment he hasn’t found the Champion, he can’t help but feel more irritated. The more selfish part of him wanted to walk away at every beckon. However, something akin to pride forced him to act his best. He didn’t want to disappoint Arlin, did he?

So instead, he was behaving and talking to every adult that wanted a smidgen of the Prince's time. By the time he got to the center of the ballroom, he hadn’t found his target. He waited in what will soon be the dance floor, trying to look casual.. A tap on his shoulders, and he spun around to meet blue eyes.

“Jay!” He cheers, maybe she had better luck than he did! She opened her mouth, but before a single word could come out, the music changed. It went from a flowy sweet melody to something familiar that made dread build in his stomach. A waltz had started, though he wasn’t sure which one. He turns around to run before they could embarrass themselves, but he found everyone staring at him and Jay. No one else was getting ready to dance… Even King Rose, off to the side near a tall burly panda man, was nodding encouragingly. Oh no, this was a special dance.

“Jay.” His harsh whisper as they made eye contact conveyed every emotion they both were feeling. Thankfully, dance lessons every other day after the ball had been decided was enough for him not to step on Jay’s toes. She was better at this than him, although even someone as confident as Jay felt every stare on her. It almost made him feel better. Almost. They twirled slowly over the ballroom floor, now able to talk in hushed whispers.

“Chip, I think I found our target! He’s on the farthest balcony. He left a train of… Wet spots? Damp spots at least.” She hummed, proud of her tracking skills. “So after our dance, we should say hi!”

“Of course!” he nods his head, and almost trips over the hem of her dress. “Sorry.” That was much quieter, hoping no one else heard him. She sighed, but had a smile on her face.

“I guess since you’re my best friend, I can let it slide.”

Chip beamed.

The dance wasn't awkward after that. The two held back giggles that they were sure weren't heard by any stuffy adults around. By the time the song had finished, the two had sneakily Started moving towards the balconies, trying to get as close as they could before being able to leave. They both wanted to sprint, but their duties weighed heavily on too small shoulders.

The last crescendo Finally faded, and the two were quick to bow to each other, to the Orchestra playing, and of course to the audience they had gathered. Hand in hand, they moved to where the damp spots led.

Jay went out first, the cool air hitting Chip like a breeze even if there was no wind. It was suddenly too hot inside, and the respite he got from the cool night air had him sighing in relief.

“Hello.” An unfamiliar person had said. The tone was confident, though it didn't stop the wavering of the words.

“Hi!” Jay was already jumping to him, and Chip had to pull her arm back to get her to calm down. He was excited too, but he had to seem like a cool guy!

“Hello,” Chip elbowed her, and she jerked her head to look at him. He nodded to the triton, and bowed respectfully. Jay, picking up on it, curtseyed as well.

“Apologies for the rude greeting. My name is Christopher James, and this is her Highness Jay Ferin. We welcome you here to Rose.” tl the triton looked at both of them, and Chip could see he was obviously confused. He understood, it took him a while to understand all the rules too.

“Anyway, you're Gillion Tidestrider, right?’ Back in familiar territory, Gillion nodded vigorously .

“I am the champion of the undersea! The hero of my people, chosen by my god.” He puffed out his chest, hand going to his side and rested on his hip, clenched hand to where his heart was. “I am proud of my people! My sister, Edyn, says I should be very happy to represent my people here today!”

That made Jay's head quirk to the side as she rose to standing. “You weren't happy about it at first?” Asking that question was like hearing the click of a bomb. The moment Gillion registered that question, his face had so many emotions on it Chip couldn't even pick up. There were a few, furrowed brows and tight lips, that seemed like anger, but his eyes….

He looked so scared right now.

Chip immediately cut in, hoping the second it took to process all of this was enough to help Gillion feel better and forget whatever emotional landmine they just stumbled upon.

“Do you know Finn Tidestrider?” Gillion looks to him quickly, that confusing emotion on his face. (Why does everyone have such confusing emotions?) It quickly turns to elated joy at the mention of Rose's advisor.

“He's my great grandfather!” A thump could be heard behind him, Chip and Jay jumping at the sudden noise. They uniformly peer around Gillion to see his formal knight outfit was fitted around a thick finned tail. It had spines that looked sharp to the touch, and his tailfin looked like a crescent moon with a thin slice taken out to make the fin shape.

“That's so cool.” It was the blandest tone, but Jay was leaking energetic energy. She raised onto her toes As much as her shoes would allow her. “Gillion, we HAVE to become friends, okay?”

Gillion looked between The two, and happily smiled. “Of course!” The smile was blinding. Sharp teeth glinted and it sent Chip's heart skittering. He looked around, wondering if the sudden chill down his spine was the sweat cooling his body too much. Shrugging it off, he looks up at the stars and smiles happily at them. He wonders if gods are real, and if they really chose Gillion. Well, in the end it doesn’t matter. He figures if Lunadeyis did pick Gillion, she picked a good one.

“Hey, what do you say to hanging out while you stay for a few days?” Gillion looked confused, which didn’t make sense.

“You are staying as the guests of honor, right?”

“Oh!” Gillion smacks the side of his head somehow avoiding the coral. “Apologies, i forgot we were staying! Yes, yes.” he nods, sighing as he remembers. “If the Elders allow it, then yes I would love to!” Chip grinned, excited for the weekend to come.

“Then lets go dance, I hear they’re playing sea shanties soon!” Chip held his hand out to Gillion, grinning from ear to ear. He watched Gillion slowly put his hand in his, the wet contact not a surprise but still shocking. He pulled Gillion to the dance floor, happily grinning with Jay pulling his other arm. The three dance the rest of the night away, crashing late into the night in a heap on the floor. All smiling as they sleep.

Chapter Text

Gillion’s next few days were so busy, Chip couldn’t get a moment to hang out with his new friend. The Elders had him do training for eight hours, saying the oversea will help him get tough. Chip didn’t understand, choosing to simply mind his own business. He wasn’t a fish, he couldn’t understand why they needed a chosen one anyway.

On the evening of the third day, Chip and Jay sat on his floor. A knock on the door had Chip immediately excited. Maybe Gillion had some time today! Jay only giggled at him, continuing to draw her garden. Chip tried to not to trip over crayons strewn about or the balled up paper wads. Finally at the huge door, he opens it happily to find Gillion swaying a tail behind him. A shadowy figure stood tall behind him. Chip looked between the two, unsure what was going on. Was he allowed to hang out here, or not?

“Gillion!” He shouted anyway, happy that he even saw his friend. He felt giddy, like he was hopped up on sugar.

“Chip!” gillion shouted with somehow even more enthusiasm. He wore a sleeveless black turtleneck that seemed to be skintight. He could see the indents of gills slightly hidden under the neck of the shirt. It got him looking at all of Gillion's fishy qualities. The spins and fins he had on both arms and legs. He knew Gillion's fingers were webbed, the ends like claws. His coral on his head was cute, really.

“Can you come in, or are you not allowed?” he glanced up at the assumed adult behind him.

“No, I am allowed! I had to do three extra laps around the palace grounds for the leisure time, but I can spend the afternoon with you!”

“Then what’s up with the spooky guy?”

Gillion gasped, putting a hand up to motion to the creepy adult who hasn’t said a word. “This is one of the elders of the undersea! It is a very respectful title! You must learn to bow to it as you would a king. Now, he is here because I am not allowed to be alone with you. He said it was to be sure their precious chosen one was safe no matter what.” he nods, as if that wasn’t a deranged thing to say. Was he always followed by one of the elders? Did that not get suffocating?

“Well, whatever gets you to play.” He shrugged, maybe the Elder wouldn’t be too bad. He had to be supervised often when Jay and Ava were in the same room. It’s always been a ‘just in case’ thing. Were adults always this paranoid…? Rose never had any worries like that.

Gillion grabbed Chip’s hand, and he blushed at the contact. He hasn’t actually been touched by anyone other than his family or Jay. The contact was wet and cold, but also warm? It was surprising, but not gross. Actually, the more that Gillion holds on, the more comfortable it is. His heart won’t calm down at the sudden contact, and he’s unsure what the cause was. Did he get surprised by the contact? Has it really been that long since he’s been touched or held, he jumps at the contact? No, can’t be. Gillion pulls him to the floor and the thoughts become insignificant. Sitting side by side with Gillion and handing him a blank page of paper, they get to drawing. Gillion uses up almost an entire stick of blue crayon before Jay pipes up.

“Did you know the sea is my favorite thing?” She hummed out, grabbing a brown crayon. “Your grandpa talks a lot about it nowadays. I’m sure you’ve had fun talking to him too, right?” Gillion nods enthusiastically, a yellow crayon traded for the blue one.

“Yes, he has told me about some fish he’s found while traveling with King Rose!” Chip gasps and nods along.

“He told me about the elusive Crawfish! He started painting them in my room too.” He stood up, going to point out every one he’s found so far. “He adds new ones every so often and I have to find them!” Gillion gasped, looking around to see if there was any he hadn't found. After a few minutes, gillion looks behind him to the elder who was now sitting in a chair by Chip’s bed. He motions for the two to come closer, and Chip has to be careful not to trip on Jay with how close they all three get.

“He told me about a… cum shark.” it took a moment for the word to settle in, but Chip and Jay went red as they both laughed hysterically. The elder wasn’t impressed, a clearing of their throat made Gillion sit up straight, his finns closing in on him. His tail tucks itself close to his body and he shrinks to curl closer into a ball. Chip, sensing the change, stops laughing to focus on Gillion. While trying to discern what Gillion must be feeling, Jay spoke up.

“He’s such a silly guy! He told me he had met so many people on his travels, it’s really cool. He wrote books on it! Father said I can’t read them till I’m older, but I plan on it!” Gillion’s head makes barely any movement as he focuses fully on his drawing.

Jumping on the chance to change the subject, Chip slams his hand on the floor. “Speaking of getting older, Dad says he’s gonna teach me to sail at 15! I’ll learn all about a boat and sail with them on The Midnight Rose!”

“My father said I am gonna help in the Navy! That I’ll become like a general like Elizabeth is!” She kicked her feet squealing all the while. “I’m so excited, Father always has such good stories to say! Plus, sis is gonna take the crown and I’ll be able to have fun on the sea!”

“You know,” Chip hummed, looking down at the drawing he made. He slowly moves back to his spot beside Gillion. “We have to choose soon if we wanna take the crown. I don’t think Elizabeth wants to do it… Should I?”

It made sense, he wanted to be an amazing King like Rose, but were the responsibilities too much?

“I think you’d make a great king!” Gillion smiles, and it warms Chip to the touch. Chip only scoffed, crossing his arms as he sat down.

“You hardly know me!” Gillion shakes his head, his posture softening as he makes eye contact.

“I know you well enough.” It was finalized, he thinks. That was it. Such blind faith in him inflated his chest, it went straight to his head. With a wry smile, he nodded.

“I’ll talk to Dad about it then.” The three chat and chat some more, talking until Gillion was so tired he couldn’t keep his eyes open.

`~`

“So you really can’t come visit often?” They were standing on the palace steps, watching as some undersea servants loaded their luggage into a special carriage. This was one that was made to go both on land and underwater.

Gillion frowned, looking at his feet. Finally dressed back into his usual formal clothes, his knight's uniform looked stiff and uncomfortable. “I’m sorry, Chip. We can send letters of course! However, my duties under the sea take precedence and I spend a lot of time with my sister if I am not training.” Chip sighed, nodding in defeat.

Arlin laughed quietly, patting Chip on the head. “He’ll write every day then!” Gillion’s tail wagged hard against the cement stairs, the loud thump thump hidden behind Gillions frame. Chip couldn’t help but giggle, holding his arms out for a hug. After a moment of realizing what was going on, Gillion slowly slid to his arms. Chip wrapped his arms around Gillion, making sure to watch out for any poking fins. Gillion rested his arms around him, gentle and careful.

“It’ll be nice to get some more letters. Only Edyn writes to me.”

If hearts could break, Chip is sure his is in pieces. Only his sister to write to him? Chip couldn’t imagine how lonely they must be. “I’ll make sure to write to you often, okay? So always write back.” He felt more than saw Gillion nod, and reluctantly they had to let go of each other. His chest felt tight, a stinging to his eyes. It felt too much like a goodbye. Their hands traveled down each other's arms, trying to keep touching for as long as possible.

“See you later?” Chip mumbled as Gillion slowly let go of his hand. Finally two separate people, Gillion could do nothing but give a weak smile and nod as he turned away to go to the now fully loaded up carriage. Slowly, they loaded up. With a final wave, Gillion faced forward and disappeared from sight. Chip made sure to wave until he was sure he couldn’t be seen. It was another five minutes until Arlin forced him to get on with his day. He was already wondering what he could write to Gillion. Maybe this heaviness in his chest would weaken with every word he wrote.

Happy birthday!

Chapter Text

“Surprise!” Shouted a cacophony of voices. Chip’s eyes closed automatically as the blindfold was pulled off his eyes. Blinking at the sudden light, he opens his eyes to find a lounge room decorated with green and brown, frogs everywhere the eye could see. His smile almost split his face as a frog shaped cake was being set down on a table set up in the back. Decorations littered the ceiling made to look like a forest or a swamp. Green and brown streamers taped to the ceiling, paper taped to the wall in shapes of trees, and the punch was dyed to look like swamp water with little gummy frogs in it. After his eyes adjusted to the light, firecrackers popped, streamers were thrown over his head, and the sound of kazoos went off. Elizabeth smiled at him as she folded the cloth that was previously his blindfold. She walked past him to go to Ava, who was blowing through a party noise maker like her life depended on it. Their hands automatically joined together when brought close enough.

He couldn’t keep in the delightful laughter that escaped him, looking around at the room of people. People from many countries were here, something as simple as a birthday was a political event ever since he had accepted the title of crown prince. He recognized the first prince of the Edioson kingdom, the second son in his mothers arms. The king was talking to King Rose, a jovial laughter emanating from them. He saw people in gothic clothes, they must be from Noctis. He doesn’t remember Noctis having any kind of royalty, but a wizard fellow was chatting with Finn. They both had serious looks on their faces. Though his children were here, Chip noticed King Ferin wasn’t here. He wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not.

Everyone was dressed in their best, not as dressed up as they were in the ball, but it was nice to see everyone having fun. He’s glad Elizabeth forced him into some nicer clothes this morning. Of course under the guise of an order of the King but it was no matter. He was just dressed in a nicer suit he had, it was simple and neat.

Among the crowd of people, he finally spotted his best friends. They stood by each other, laughing and taking sips from cups in silver goblets. They waved at him happily, their noise makers loudly clicking.

“Hey!” he bounded over, almost knocking them over as he put an arm around them both pulling them into a group hug. “What’s this!”

Gillion and Jay, both in semi-formal outfits, laugh. “Duh, a surprise party for you!” Gillion shifts his drink so it doesn’t spill as Chip increases pressure. “We had to make sure our favorite prince didn’t have a lame birthday with frogs as his theme!”

“Frogs are cool, don’t be jealous.” he huffed out, turning his nose up at them. “They can breathe underwater because they breathe through their skin! Don’t lie and say that isn’t cool.”

“Whatever you say, birthday boy.” Jay laughed as she took a sip from her punch. “Plus, we brought gifts.” Chip’s grin grew, looking around the room for the gift table. It sat in the back, previously blocked by a group of people who had now moved to greet the crowned prince.

“Yes, we made sure to bring amazing gifts! Oh Jay, I don’t know if I can wait for mine!” he wiggled, his tail almost hitting Chip in the leg. Thankfully, Chip was used to it by now. He shifted just so, so he could still hang on them and not get hit at the same time. “Though your father has been bragging about his gift the entire time we were waiting for you.”

At the mention of his father, Chip let go of them both to start searching for the giant man. He found him in the back, writing something down on a sheet of paper. His eyebrows scrunched as he heaved a sigh that Chip could hear across the room.

“Well, then i’ll go talk to him!” he nodded to his friends and they raised their cups to him in a goodbye. He would for sure hang out with them later, maybe convince them to stay the night? While walking to the back of this meeting room transformed party room, he spotted one of the Elders here. He frowned, though was not surprised. Gillion wasn’t allowed to be anywhere alone, it wasn’t even happening to Chip and it was suffocating! Gillion didn’t seem to mind, so he shook the annoyance off and forced himself to focus on getting to his dad.

Arlin sighed again as he crossed out what he was writing on the paper, shaking his head. Chip tiptoed as soon as he got close enough, he slyly grinned as he hunched over. He saw no movement from his dad, and when he got close enough, right about to yell…

He was quickly grabbed by someone from behind! He yelled instead, picked up and put on someone else’s shoulders. (Depends on how tall Arlin is) It took a moment for his brain to register, but the long black hair was recognizable in that man bun. He leaned down as much as he dared to look eye in eyepatch with Drey.

“Drey!”

“Chip!” he swung Chip around off of his shoulders to give him a hug. Chip held on as much as he could, unable to fully wrap his arms around, but still squeezing as much as he could. “I’m glad I made it, sorry I'm late little buddy!” Chip shook his head, giving a squeeze as reassurance.

“Well, I didn't know about it till I was here so you’re forgiven! As long as you brought a cool gift.”

“Well of course, what kind of cool uncle would I be if I didn’t? But you have to wait and get it with everyone else’s presents.” He laughed, that unique laugh that sounded like a wolf. He was finally put down so Drey and Arlin could hug themselves. He heard their greetings, laughter and warm words exchanged. He thought it was nice that adults could be such good friends. He hopes that Jay and Gillion would greet him warmly like this even when they were adults.

“Well, I hear my nieces are here. Jayson hasn’t allowed me to talk to them since I work for you, so I planned to talk to them for a bit. Is it cool if I steal Jay for a bit?” Drey looked down at him, Chip nodded enthusiastically.

“Yeah! Plus I was told Dad has a cool gift for me.” Drey smiled, ruffling his hair as he walked past and then Chip was left with Arlin. He walked to the table, trying to peek at the words Arlin was writing so seriously. Arlin, with a laugh that could only be described as sheepish, covered the letter a bit.

“Well, I planned on giving this to you when you turned fifteen, but you already decided to be crown prince and… Well, It’s best if you just read it. Give me a moment to finish it up, yeah?” Chip nodded, deciding that he would bug Gillion until his dad was ready.

He walked around the room, staring at the decorations and all their beauty. A banner was written in sloppy common, misspelling ‘Birthday’ in multiple ways. A giggle escaped him at the sight. It was sweet. He looked on and saw Gillion with the Elder from earlier. Gillion was looking at the floor, with his hands behind his back. He looked like a knight, waiting for his next order. He didn’t notice earlier with all the excitement, but Gillion wasn’t in his usual getups. It is always either his armor or that black outfit with a sleeveless turtleneck. This time, he wore something a lot more formal. A white shirt that had spaces for his gills and fins and a blue suit jacket over it. He had dress pants on, the same sea blue that was the jacket. He looked great! Though he didn’t look happy. Chip wondered if he was having fun.

He skipped over, avoiding talks with someone he didn’t even get a good look at. His eyes were trained on his target. By the time he got to Gillion, he had already been spotted. He watched as Gillion’s tail swished as the two locked eyes. With a cautious glance at the Elder, Gillion slowly made his way over to Chip. The two met up in the middle, Ava and Elizabeth on one side and King Rose on the other. They both were chatting, though Chip didn’t see who. He didn’t care, actually. All that mattered was Gillion in this moment. He felt his face already redden, but he shook his head as he tried to ignore it.

“Gill!” He grinned, looking over his shoulder to stare down the Elder. “Is he giving you trouble again?” Gillion shook his head, frown returning at the comment.

“Chip…” He started, but shook his head. “Do you want your gift?” Chip nodded violently. His hair flew around causing Gillion to laugh. His smile shone through, and Chip couldn’t be happier about it. “Then let’s go somewhere less crowded! We should be able to sneak off.”

Chip agreed, looking around the room. Everyone was engulfed in their own conversations at this point: He saw Drey talking to Jay alone in the corner of the room, Elizabeth and Ava eating some snacks, the King was busy yapping to other royalty, and Arlin was still trying to finish writing whatever it was. With a smirk, Chip nodded to Gillion.

“We can definitely get away.” So grabbing his best friend’s hand, Chip slowly winds through the grounds of people. None of them notice a pair of kids disappearing out of the room. Even as the door clicks shut behind them. Not even the Elder seems to know the two snuck off. Wins all around, the two giggle as their hands stay connected. They slowly head to Chip’s room, both wanting to get there quickly but not wanting this to end. Jay was always with them so this was a rare opportunity.

By the time they pushed the door that led to Chip’s room Chip was sure his face was going to melt off. Why was he so embarrassed with just holding his friends hand?! He didn’t feel this for Jay. It was weird! He wasn’t sure if he wanted to avoid it for the rest of his life or live forever in that feeling. Too preoccupied with his thoughts, Chip didn’t hear Gillion clear his throat until he was saying “AHEM.” so loud it made him jump.

He turns to see Gillion holding a small box out in both hands. It was a beautiful box, an intricate carving of coral and oysters laid across the chestnut box. He watched silently. Gillion’s face slowly twisted with every second passing, tail flicking and ears pinned to the side of his head.

“Sit! Okay?!” He almost yelled, fed up with Chip’s lack of response. Chip could only do as he was told. Still stunned by the beauty of the box, he slowly made his way to his bed and sat down on the lush comforter. Gillion wasn’t too far behind him. He didn’t know who was more nervous! Though with the way Gillion’s tail flicked, Chip thought it was a close call.

Now that Chip was sitting down, Gillion thought now was the best time to give him his gift. Holding it out to him again, now eyes open and looking directly into Chip’s soul. Chip gently took it afraid to break the wooden box. He immediately inspects the item. Turning it over this way and that, making sure to be gentle as he heard something rattle inside. The back of the small box was also carved. It had waves, a sailboat, and a mermaid. It was beautiful. He peaked up at gillion, watching him squirm as Chip stalled.

Finally Chip slowly opened the box. Inside was a small velvet pillow. On top of it rested a bracelet of pearls. It was breathtaking. Had he said that yet? Everything about this was beautiful and made his heart beat faster. He thought it would come out his mouth and kill him. He could feel his heartbeat in the very tips of his fingers.

The pearls varied in color. The largest one was a black pearl. It shimmered in the light, a small array of colors blooming from it. It was mesmerizing to say the least. He had no words. Beside it were pink and white pearls, all of varying shades. They glimmered unnaturally, as if magic was etched into them. Though there was no runes he could see, he still could sense the force of arcana that felt so familiar yet not of this world.

“Peepaw helped me out. I know you don’t really wear bracelets, but these are enchanted. Regular pearls take large amounts of care. You have to clean them and they have to have knots between two pearls so they dont scratch…” he kept talking, and Chip tried to pay attention. He really did! However, in his defense, he was staring at the bracelet and was sure it would turn to dust if he even touched it. It enchanted him. Ironic.

“Anyway!” Gillion shouted, his face a darker shade of blue. Chip felt a bit disappointed that he didn’t pay attention to whatever got him so flustered. “These won’t break. Ever, actually. If the string breaks…” He took a breath, looking at the ceiling. “Something something it won’t go away forever? Anyway that means it’s basically invincible. Perfect for a sword fighting crown prince!” he grinned showing those sharp teeth Chip loved. He was jealous, really. He wanted cool teeth!

“So… I can wear it?” Chip didn’t mean to sound so small, but he was afraid to move and break it. The little talk about how they were invincible didn’t sway his fears at all.

“Of course. I… want you to wear it all the time, actually.” He paused, took a deep breath, and then held his hand out. “May I?” Chip’s heart skipped.

“Of course.” he felt like a parrot. He didn’t know what else to say though! He was afraid to stutter! Gillion took the box from him gently, grabbing the bracelet off of the velvet. It clacked as it moved! Gillion set the box down on the bed. Carefully, he took Chip’s left hand and slid the bracelet on. It was a cold weight, but not an unwelcome one. It kinda reminded him how Gillion’s skin felt. Not wet though, which was good.

“It should fit perfectly. Peepaw made sure to put that kind of enchantment on it. It will grow with you too!” Gillion flipped Chip’s hand over to gaze at his gift. Chip couldn’t help but do the same. It looked perfect on his tanned skin. A touch of delicacy in his tough boy persona. Gillion grabs both of his hands, holding them above Chip’s head as he cheered.

“I’m glad you like it! I was very nervous.” He laughed, relief could be heard in it clear as a bell. Chip could drown in it happily. The sound was sweet and infectious, he was sure he never heard Gillion laugh so joyfully. Gillion released his hands, flopping on the bed beside him. “I kept thinking you wouldn’t wear it! I know you humans have weird things, like how only women can wear jewelry.”

“Well, yeah.” He couldn’t deny it, some people were particular about their image. “But that’s idiots. Only an idiot wouldn’t wanna wear something as cool as this! I mean, it will never break! Isn’t that awesome? Not to mention it’s beautiful.” Gillion flushed, his tail thumping underneath him. “Can’t wait to show it off to everyone.” The tail stopped thumping and Chip looked over at his best friend. Did he say something wrong?

“Actually…” he couldn’t look Chip in the eye, instead choosing to look at the new shrimp that adorned the wall near his dresser. “Can you… not tell anyone? The Elders are worried I’m getting too attached. I don’t want you to get in trouble because of me. I… Also don’t wanna stop seeing you.” The very thought made Chip upset. Why would he be a distraction?! They were best friends! It’s not like Gillion would move the sea for him. He shook his head to clear it.

“Well, it’ll be our secret yeah? Can we tell Jay?” He brought his wrist closer to his chest trying to shield it from the world. It wasn’t the best feeling, having to keep something so important to him a secret. Especially since it was one of the best gifts he’s ever gotten.

“Oh, I told her my plan months ago!” Chip sputtered, feeling heat creep up his neck. “She was the one who told me to get it enchanted. I was just going to make you take care of it.” He cackled, trying to remember to thank Jay before the end of the day. “She said she would take credit for it and I could take credit for hers. We planned it very well! All thanks to Jay.” Gillion nodded, a grin returning.

Chip flopped onto his back beside Gillion. He couldn’t help but notice their hands just mere inches apart. He wanted to hold Gillions hand again. Slowly, he inched it closer. They were quiet, the only sound was the slow drag of the pearl bracelet on satin. His heart was beating out of his chest again. Chip was sure his ears were on fire, his chest too. Was it normal to get this nervous? It felt weird and exciting.

Their fingers brushed against each other quicker than he was expecting. Their fingers tangled lightly, not fully holding hands. They both stared at the ceiling until their hearts calmed down.

`~`

“Daaaadd…” Chip laid over the edge of the futon, groaning at Arlin usually worked. However, this time he was unnaturally stubborn. He refused to hand over his gift! Everyone had either gone home already or is staying the night and washing up from the party. Ava and Jay were allowed to stay but Gillion got dragged away for training the next day. He couldn’t help looking to his new pearl bracelet at the thought of Gillion. A smile forced its way onto his face.

“Alright.” Arlin sighed, shaking his head. He stood up from where he was sitting for the last three hours. “Alright! I give up trying to make it perfect. I just… Just know you weren’t originally supposed to get this, okay?” He turns and faces Chip, kneeling in front of him as he hands him a small black notebook. It had a picture of a sailboat, one simple and clearly one for beginners. He grabbed it gently, feeling the leather and pages that poked out haphazardly. It looked handmade, a spine that was uneven, clearly woven with shaking hands. He looked up at his dad. He was looking in Chip’s eyes, a serious glint in them. He looked back down quickly, suddenly feeling shy. Opening up the book he was welcomed to his fathers messy scrawl. There was lines crossed out, pages torn, and a section completely blotted out by a spill of ink. Though Chip could feel the love and care his father had for him in every letter as he read the first one that didn’t have a line through it.

Dear Chip,

I don’t have words for how important i think it is that you make the choice of being the crown prince yourself. I never want you to feel forced to follow some path set before you. I firmly believe you should follow your own soul, as a free spirit. If today you were to say “I don’t want to be prince” I would happily allow you to run away and live in a cabin near the ocean.

You are my pride and joy. Every day as I watch you grow, I think that you will do great things. You will change this world. You will bring joy to everyone. As you do with us here in the castle. I know you will bring this country greatness.

My son, you have chosen a difficult path. You did it for many reasons, for your sister, for me, for your country that saved you. You have taken a huge responsibility, one that will change your life. I am so proud of you, Christopher Chip James. I hope to watch you rule this country one day. I know you will make it your own fun. I know everyone will yell “Hail King Christopher! Long live the king!”

Longer will live my love for you my son. Always remember your father loves you.

Chip held the book tightly to his chest. It welled up with so much feeling that he thought he’d really burst! It took him a moment to compose himself before he spoke.

“Thanks, dad.” the words came slowly, a tremble in the words. “This… means a lot to me.” The feelings bubbled in his chest until they slipped out. Small hiccuping sobs escaped from him as tears started to trickle down his face. His eyes trained to the floor as he tried to keep the tears away from the book. Next thing he knows, strong arms are wrapping around him as he gets pulled into an equally strong torso. He was squeezed into a fierce hug. Arlin choked out a few tears himself, but they were hidden in Chip’s hair. They stayed like that for a while, until Chip's arms got tired.

They separated, Arlin wiping away some stray tears. He did the same, still trying to make sure no tears got onto the notebook. “Sorry kid,” Arlin chuckled. “You should read the next page though.” He nodded slowly, opening the book back up and flipping the page.

One Free Sailing Lesson

It took a moment for the words to register. However, right there, was his wish. To learn to sail. To go out on the open seas. He looked up at his dad and felt his cheeks ache with the force of his smile.

“I can?! Really?!” He couldnt help it, he started jumping up and down in place.

“If youre old enough to decide you want to run a country, i think you're old enough to learn how to sail a boat. You are going to go on diplomatic missions with us soon, on the Midnight Rose. Its better for you to learn how to sail the emergency boat-” Chip's screech made Arlin stop talking. He grinned, watching as Chip grabbed his arm to aid in his mission to jump up and down as much as possible. Arlin couldn’t help it, he scooped up his kid with a loud cackle. They both laughed and laughed as Arlin spun him around in his arms, carrying him out the room and into the hallways to tell his friends the good news.

Chapter Text

Age: 8

“What did you do this time?” Chip could only dramatically sigh, shaking his head as he entered her guest room. Jay was unpacking a suitcase filled with the world's frilliest clothes she was forced to wear.

“Nothing!” She hissed out, pouting. “They sent me here because of a letter, or something. We were supposed to talk about it later “ She didn’t have the letter on her, she was ordered to give it directly to the King as soon as she arrived. She wasn’t allowed to open it either, so she really had no idea why she was sent here to stay a month.

“We argued earlier this week, but father already dolled out that punishment.” Another huff as she sorts her clothes. Normally a maid would do something as silly as sorting your clothes, but this castle was different. There were servants, yes, but many are used to cook the food and make sure the place looks spotless. The king had been insistent that he do things as easy and simple as that. He wanted to be strong even as he grew old, he had said. Doing something as simple as drawing his own bath was tantamount in that. That’s what he said, at least. Chip hardly paid any attention when the adults rambled on and on.

“What was the punishment this time?”

“Only a grounding. Stay inside my room for a few days.” Chip nodded, he’d been awarded that punishment several times when certain pranks got out of hand.

How was he supposed to know flour was flammable?!

A knock sounded, and of course Chip immediately went to open the bedroom door. Outside stood Arlin, dressed up in some official getup that reminded Chip of the ball they had a few years ago.

It was a red coat with gold trim, he even wore a shirt this time. It had a collar that was buttoned up perfectly. It made Chip uneasy. What offical stuff was going on and did he need to be dressed up for it?

“Your highness Jay,” he smiled so warmly at her, it made Chip happy. Even if her own family kinda sucked, she always had people in her corner. He knew even the King liked her, with the way he always welcomed her here with open arms. It helped that Ava also visited as often as she could. The two practically lived here.

"You and Chip are needed in the meeting room on the first floor.” It was the most proper he’s heard from his dad in a while. Shocking, but not that surprising if he really thinks about it. Jay comes from a kingdom that does things much more proper, a true kingdom made from royal blood and not the hard work King Rose has put into this one. Foraging it from thieves and pirates, King Rose had gained enough respect and had enough people wanting a place to be loyal too - they gave him the title willingly.

Jay looked at chip, a confused look fluttering across her face. He didn’t know either, but was certainly curious. Arlin nodded to them both, walking away after giving his message. He looked… tense. Uneasy, or something. It probably had something to do with the letter. With a shrug, the two hurried to get Jay unpacked before they had to be called down.

….

“Do you know why I've called you here, kids?” They both shook their heads, sitting in the too large ornate chairs of the official meeting room. Arlin and King Rose sat in the same ornate chairs across from them. Finn stood right behind King Rose, pen and notebook in hand as always. He looked a little more frayed than usual. His hair not combed just right, a shake in the pen he holds. A large oak table sat between them. It was decorated with a small bowl that was filled with small wrapped snacks, most Chip didn't know the name of.

“Well, your father made a proposition. I think he really should have talked to you about it beforehand, Jay. And I will talk to him about that.” The way he was speaking had chip on the edge of his seat. He wrung his hands absently, glancing over at Jay. She looked more nervous than he did. She kept playing with a strand of fiery red hair, using her fingers to comb out imaginary tangles. It was much longer than last time, almost halfway down her back. He wonders if she's going to keep it long.

“He wants your arranged marriage.” not a single sound escaped the children. They waited for the bomb to finally drop, for it to rupture that deafening silence.“With Chip, specifically.”

That's what was the trigger. An explosion of sound, both Jay and Chip yelling their objections, Arlin arguing and Finn’s bubbly words trying to cut in at any moment. The old man was quiet anyway, so with the cacophony of sound, he wasn’t even a ripple in the water. A raised hand by the King silenced the entire room.

“I understand we are all caught off guard by this.”

“Not even just that, my liege!” Arlin boomed, the giant man using power in his voice that he rarely does in front of kids. “It’s the fact he chose our crown prince, instead of the obvious.”

Ah, how Elizabeth and Ava are in love. Well, as much in love as you can be at such a young age. They started having sleepovers for weeks at a time, once Ava stayed over for a whole month.

“Arlin.” a simple word, spoken with such authority Arlin shut his mouth immediately. It made Chip shake.

What could even say in this moment? Deny this? Make both of their lives harder? He was told he'd have to make hard decisions, but did that include this? Is he going to already make a wrong choice?

“Apologies, sire.” A soft reply, not with the bite he had just moments ago. He looked up to them, they had seemed to calm down in the moments Chip was in his head. Finn was writing sonething feriously. Eyesbrows pinched, eyes squinted as the scratch of the pen almost tore the paper. Chip had sat down within the exchange, making sure to look his most polite. Maybe if he looked the calmest, things would settle down quicker.

“I understand you two are simply friends, but this is being treated as a political marriage." He had his hands raised in surrender, looking apologetic. He seemed to be trying to keep Arlin as calm as possible. Speaking of, Arlin seemed to be taking deep breaths and counting backwards from ten. "Chip ascends to the throne as our crown prince, the princess of Raft will be at his side to ensure that if he were to attack the country of Raft he would be betraying his wife. It is used for us to have alliances with Kingdoms without merging kingdoms.”

“What about Raft attacking us?” Chip couldnt help the question boiling over. He was hoping his gut was wrong. That the worst thought going through his head was wrong.

King rose looked at Jay, something soft and wavering. “Raft is very family inclined. They would never attack if one of their own was here.”

A flinch made his head snap to Jay. She was sitting stiffly, shaking so obviously even Arlin could tell across the room. She didn’t look at anyone, her eyes trained on the floor.

“They want to get rid of me.” It was put plainly, as if an obvious answer. Her voice was usually as clear as a bell, as strong as the sea. Now, it wavered and tore her throat. He felt he could hear the lump forming in her throat as choked sobs slowly rose out of her. She bit her lip, taking shuddering breaths to stop the cries.“That's it. This is-”

“My dear,” King Rose started, but she started crying. Chip wasn’t sure if he was allowed to get up, but didn’t care in the slightest in the end. He leaps to her, hugging her as gently as he can. She clings to him, heaving sobs wracking her small body. She seemed so much smaller when she cried, curling into herself and trying not to make a sound. Chip didn’t understand, he always cried loudly and brazenly.

“He hates me!” she blubbed out eventually, clawing at Chip's back, burying her face in his torso. “I knew it!”

“Jay.” Rose was closer now, slowly holding his arms out for her to hug. “Come here, songbird.” A simple nickname, he gave one to everyone. Chip was firecracker, Elizabeth was his favorite soldier, and Jay was songbird. Arlin was his best friend, and earned the pleasant nickname of ‘thorn in his side’ and Drey was Sureshot. He hasn’t ever heard what King Rose calls Finn, but he’s sure it’s affectionate and personal.

Jay leaps into his arms, blubbering on about how she has to cut her hair and dye it now, since she can't be a Ferin anymore.

“Jay, he’s not getting rid of you.” Jay just shakes her head, so sure of her own father hating her. Chip can do nothing but rub circles on her back, hoping the comfort doesn’t overwhelm her. “He simply wishes for the best life you can have. I know one day he will ask for Elizabeth’s hand for your sister, he simply wants you and Chip to be happy.”

“Promise?” There was that word. Chip refused to break promises, the clinking of pearls a clear indication of it. He didn’t know King Rose's view on them, but assumed they had the same ideals.

“Of course, I promise.” He couldn’t see the King’s face as he buried it in Jay’s hair, but he Saw Arlin’s.

He looked sad

Chapter Text

Sitting in the decorated office, King rose huffed. It was decorated to his tastes, beautiful blacks, red and golds. He turns in his chair, watching the courtyard. Elizabeth and Chip were there, a bout of sparring making them move quickly as their wooden swords smack the other's. Chip was getting better every day, but Elizabeth had time on him. She had started a whole year earlier than him! however Chip was catching up quickly. A move he lost to last time he easily blocks now, a confident look on his face that Rose can see from here. It was his undoing, that pride. Elizabeth found an unguarded point and quickly smashed the broadside of her sword into his torso. Losing his balance, he tumbles back onto his behind. Rose can’t help the chuckle that bubbles up. Though the joy is cut short when Chip shoots up, pointing a finger at his sister. He sighed, shaking his head.

They've been arguing a lot recently. Every mistep being blown up until one or the other decided to compete. Hot dog eating contests, races, sparring matches, you name it they comepted. It was becoming normal.

Since Chip became crown prince, he’s been under more stress to be more perfect. To get things right quicker. To be better, to be “like his sister.” It clearly put some tensions on their relationship. Rose couldn't help the uncomfortable feeling of weight in his stomach. It is his fault that they fight like this all the time.

He wonders if there was something he could do to ease their tensions a little. Finn said the way to a kids heart is stories... ah, he thought. A story that i was supposed to tell them years ago... Maybe that would cheer them up.

Decision made, he grunts as he stands. The walk from the third story to the courtyard was spent trying to steel himself. He hasn’t talked about his family in years, preferring to keep that feeling of guilt and conflicting feelings even he doesnt understand to himself. Opening the door to the courtyard, the heat hits him quickly. He forgot it was summer, the humidity low in exchange for higher heat. It was the perfect day to be at the beach, as he wished to do later that day. However, Chip was eager to train any moment he could. So instead they opted to stay home this week and King Rose and Finn would sneak off to go swim.

“You can’t just smack me with the broadside of your sword!” He heard their arguing immediately. He was quiet for a moment as he watched the two. Elizabeth had her back to Chip, who was pointing at her and snarling.

“Of course I can, it’s easy and it’s allowed in any fight.” She turns and marches to him, pointing the tip of her wooden sword to his chest. “You have to fight to win, Christopher.” Oh, the full name. He really pissed her off getting past that move earlier, Rose guessed. “Even if it means cheating.”

Chip’s face was starting to turn red, frustration clear. “You-!”

“Hello kids.” Rose decided now was perfect to interject. Chip said things he didn’t mean when upset, and he didn’t want Elizabeth to go crying to Chey again after Chip said he hated her. “We behaving for-'' he looked at the instructor, it wasn’t Arlin today. Instead, it was a half-elven woman with skin as pale as the moon. Short pink hair was slicked back as she stared at the two, letting them fight it out. Which explains why the two got so worked up. They both looked to try to impress Miss Eliana for various reasons.

“- Eliana today?” They shrink, caught. “What about a break? I’m sure Earl would love to make some fresh peach juice.” Rose watched Chip immediately brighten. He loved that old man, always asking him silly questions about his homeland before he came here. He even asked about his wife, and it took a while before Earl talked about her to him. It was clear the affection went both ways.

Chip started to rush off to tell Earl, but a single wave from Rose stopped him in his tracks. Rose was proud of how far he had come. When he first came here, he had nothing but feral instincts to make everyone approve of him. Thankfully, the nine year old in front of him was confident in his place and working hard to achieve what he wanted. He could follow orders a lot easier now, though complaining was normal. He always did it in the end, no matter what was asked of him.

“Eliana, would you mind fetching Earl and having him bring us some lunch?” He made sure to sign the words to her, enunciating as best as he could. A kind smile and Eliana happily agreed, bowing without a word and walking past the king to the door he just came through. As soon as he was sure she was far enough away, he ambled to a bench and patted the other sides. Chip and Elizabeth glanced at each other, but did eventually come sit beside him.

“I’ve been meaning to tell you this story for a couple of years now. About my family.”

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to.” Chip’s face betrayed his words, an excited look to his eyes that he hadn’t learned to control yet. He was glad for that, as much trouble as chip gets into, him being good at lying would only get him into many more troubles.

“Yeah, sir. If you just want us to get along-”

“No, no. You should know this.” He heaved a sigh, the short time he took to ready himself for this conversation wasn’t enough. This weight he carried on his shoulders, carrying this kingdom on his back, he wasn’t sure he even wanted to give it to such fragile children. However, if he wanted it, he would raise Chip to be stronger than him. Better.

“There is an island in the southern sea. It is small and part of our nation yet they receive very little in terms of help from the capital. They do well anyways, fishing and selling what they hunt. I was a sailor before I was a King. I didn’t have my own crew yet, working on a ship called The Millenium Train. The captain loved Eddison kingdom.” he couldn't help but laugh, remembering the old codger who would go starry eyed anytime he talked about the steam city. “He used to live there, loved it. I didn’t see the appeal.” A shrug, and he looked to his audience. They hung on every word, wooden swords forgotten on the ground.

“Well, a large storm was brewing and we decided staying at the nearby island would be best. We could rest and resupply, meet some people at the local tavern.” He felt his face heat. Maybe he shouldn’t tell children about what sailors did at taverns…

“Anyway, there was a woman there… and I fell in love instantly.” Elizabeth gasped, always a sucker for love stories.

“Did she become your wife?!” She held onto his sleeve, long even in this stifling weather.

“Patience, soldier.” Chip was watching, listening intently. It seems he has been waiting for this story for quite a while. “May I continue?” Elizabeth blinked, letting go of the King and sitting back down proper. She nods, face red.

“Well, I fell in love at first sight, but she didn’t. It took two years of letters and visits for her to finally marry me, and we had our first son not too long after.” He expected something, any reaction that wasn’t this heavy silence. It was heavier than the air, looking to both of them for any reaction. They didn’t look at him, finding some spot in the garden to stare at.

“What happened?” Chip finally asked. It was a question he’s avoided for a long time. It’s not even that anything terrible happened, it was guilt that made him silent.

“Well, I continued to sail and be a bad husband and father.” there wasn’t much he could do but laugh about it. He heard the children both shuffle uncomfortably, and he kept going. “I loved her so much, though. I know she loves me too. Even though I didn’t show for a year, she said my letters were an oasis.”

“You have that look on your face again…” Chip mumbled, he probably didn’t even mean to say it out loud. Though Rose was curious, what did Chip mean?

“Sorry, what do you mean Chip?” His head tilted, watching Chip as he turned his head to look at the King in the eyes in such an unsettling way Rose almost jerked back. His eyes, wide and dark, felt like they could bore holes into him. Then, as if it never happened, the look was softened and replaced with a curious look instead.

“You have this look, sometimes I guess. You look happy and sad, like your eyes…” he sighed, shaking his head. “It’s stupid. You do it a lot with me. I thought I did something.” That made something in him crack a little. Had he made Chip feel bad about something that wasn’t even close to his fault?

“No, kid. No, i’m so sorry.” More guilt adds to the pile, more sins to carry on his back. “I was remembering my son, at those times. You remind me of him sometimes. Free spirited.” Chip perked up, the praise not unnoticed.

“Well, anyway, I created this kingdom with the help of many other people. It may not be the oldest kingdom, but we have the history of being built by pirates! That isn’t something we have ever heard of, so we had to work very hard to make this kingdom successful. My wife, well, she didn’t want all this. She wanted a quiet life… And I couldn’t give that to her.” he sighed, shaking the thoughts out of his head to focus telling his story to these two. “So, she lives on that little island, with my son. I visit once in a while, always trying to go once a month.” He just got back from a visit about a week ago. She had insisted it be the last one for a while, since Chip had many important moments coming up soon. He would turn ten in a few weeks. With that, on his birthday, he would go on his first offical trip in the midnight rose and help them as a sailor. Chip had been practicing for months for that trip. Mapping out currents and paths in case of storms. Though he still wanted to see his family...

He knew this kingdom was important, he wanted so desperately to have something to leave for his son.

“Why?” Elizabeth asked and Rose was confused. Why did she live far away?

“What do you mean? Why does she live on that island?”

“No, why did you create a kingdom?” She rolled her eyes, as if it was an obvious question. “Did you create it to fight Raft?!” She picked up her sword, waving it in the air. She slashed at her invisible opponent. “To create freedom? Or did you do it for her! For love!” Rose laughed, he could only wish his dreams were that simple. That noble.

“I created it, along with the help of many others, to create something that will be remembered. It may not be much, still young, but I think I can achieve my greatest dream. At least, before I die!” Another hearty laugh, but the doubt creeps in.

The kingdom may be doing well, but for how long? Will all this, his legacy, be for naught? Will he have abandoned his wife and son for something that fails? He doesn’t think he can handle it. The weight on his shoulders somehow get heavier, making him slump in his seat. What if? That’s all his brian cna supply, stupid what if’s to every question. Is giving the crown to a child the best idea? Can he really teach someone who they picked up off the streets to lead? Will he run this place into the ground? Is Chip capable?

Does he trust Chip enough? A nine year old who still pulls pranks? To get him married off to someone he knows is his best friend? Is what he is doing the right thing? How can he make sure it’s right?

A purple tiefling pops into his mind and he shakes his head violently. The wish doctor wasn’t going to help! At most, it’s a bandaid. Arlin was the mans friend, and a terrible source of character. The man wanted to see the good in everyone. Finn was always sceptical, insisting that there were always flaws in wishes. Drey even warned them, and if Drey lmew enough about the guy, it was something to heed. He gives off the impression he goofs around a lot, but once he sets his mind to something, he gets the job done. Rose would trust him with his life.

“I see.” Elizabeth had broken him out of whatever stupor his worries put him under. “Well, that got me pumped up! Wanna spar again Chip?”

Chip was staring at the sky, looking at the clouds. He took such a deep breath, as if it would be his last. He let his head fall, looking to his sister with a determined nod. Rose waved them off, allowing them to go. They grab their swords, chatting while they get into place.

Eliana comes back as they start to clack their swords against one another, the sound familiar and puts him at ease. She has a basket along with a platter full of glasses with a mysterious red liquid in it. The silver rimmed glasses showed the liquid, it shone delightfully in the light.

“Thank you, Eliana.” Rose grinned, taking a cup and the basket from the sword instructor. Eliana looks to the pair, admiring their techniques as Chip gets the upper hand, not for long though. Elizabeth blocks and tries to push him back. Rose turns to Eliana, about to ask about their progress when someone busts through the door.

“Your majesty!” He calls, and Rose sighs. Finn holds a letter as he jogs to him. The envelope is a familiar pink color, the one he only has for his wife. His wife wrote him? Weird, his letter hasn’t even gotten there yet. It must be important. He takes it without another word from Finn, his common wasn’t the best and he didn’t like to talk unless he needed to. His accent was thick, but Rose loved it. It reminded him of the deal he had with the Elders, and the champion. Gillion was such a good kid, he worried that he and Chip were not going to get along. The two haven’t gone a day without writing to each other though.

Rose opens the letter carefully, sure not to rip it. He loved his wife’s handwriting, the loops and curves of the letters enchanted him.

My dearest husband,

I know you just got back to your kingdom, but I have found out some important news that I think you would like to hear right away. I even paid extra to have it expressed, so you should be receiving this the next day.

My love, I am with another child. You are going to have another son.

He couldn’t read the rest, his heart beating so fast. She’s pregnant?

A rush of thoughts began, how he wished he could go there immediately to take care of her. She had to suffer the last pregnancy on her own while he was busy building this kingdom. He wishes-

Wish. Did he really want to wish it so badly?

“I’m sorry, I must go to my room. Thank you for bringing lunch Eliana.” She doesn’t say a word, simply signs the words “You’re welcome. Have a good day”

Rose signs back his farewells, waving Finn off as he walks to his room. His mind raced, but for once the decision seemed impossible not to make. He was going to have another son, and would he really be able to be here while he lived? He messed up with his first son, but now… Now he can fix it. He can have his legacy and he can have his family. He has to, he has to.

His mind was elsewhere, it took him a moment to realize he was at his own door. With a sigh he opens it and almost jumps when he sees the person he both wanted to see most and never wanted to see again.

“Hello, sire.” Niklaus Hendrix bows, the flowy shirt he wore trailed off his arms. It reminded Rose of a dancers and the trails of cloth used to make their movements flow and mesmerize their audience.

“What are you doing here?” His demand was weak, because he knew exactly why.

“Didn’t I tell you before? I am always where I am needed. Right now, it seems you need me the most.” His haughty attitude made Rose’s skin itch. The power the tiefling radiated was always something Rose couldn’t shake off. This man was dangerous, but he has always shown that he has been an ally. Working side by side, he trusted Niklaus. Not farther than he could throw him, though.

He felt his own resolve breaking bit by bit. It cracked until everything tumbled on him, crushing his chest and stealing his breath. He can't do this anymore. Another son. another son

“Fine." It felt like the words were punched out of him. "Fine. I.. i give up." Niklaus tsk'd, wagging a finger at him as he rose to stand straight up. Pure black eyes bore into him, making him shiver. It was almost the exact same loom Chip had given him. Like those eyes could see his every sin, his every thought. Every choice he would make.

“Did your little secretary talk you into it?” his honeyed voice had a tilt to it, surprised and joyful.

“Arlin? No. No, he has been preoccupied with teaching Chip the basics of sailing.” At Chip’s name the tiefling perked up. He walked to Rose’s desk and sat down behind it. He finds that the ease and confidence of the action doesn’t allow much anger at the action. It was like he belonged there.

“Speaking of the little prince,” Rose didn’t like the way Niklaus talked about Chip. It was always unsettling. His interest in the small boy made his skin crawl, but he took a deep breath and endured it.“How is he?”

“My deal.” He didn't acknowledge the request. Nikalus's interest in Chip was anything but good. He rememebered the last time the two interacted, how Chip had acted weird and seemed to be unable to hear them. Rose wouldn't lie, it frightened him a bit.

“Yes yes, we will get to that. But my king wants to know about the little prince. Everyone is curious about how this young man with not an ounce of royal blood in him is doing!” Rose twitched. He wondered about this king that never showed up. Only sent servants in his stead. As far as Rose knew, Niklaus was not the only one that was an ambassador for this king.

Nikalus looked out the window before speaking again, a hint of a smile ghosting his lips.“And where he came from.” Ah, was that it? He wanted to learn where they got chip, to learn his background.. the quick learning prince garnered a lot of attention at the welcoming ball. Everyone wanted to know if he had a family on the side, if he was a bastard out of wedlock. Rose refused to say anything, commenting that it was none of their business. He didn't want Chip to suffer any consequences because they decided they wanted to pick a kid up off the streets.

“If i tell you, is that my side of the deal?” Niklaus only laughed, shaking his head. He didn't say another word, staring out the window. Watching what Rose expected to be the two kids trying to hit one another with a sword. His face was surprisingly straight. A faint smile, yes, but it gave nothing to his overall demeanor. Rose couldn't tell what this man was thinking. It made him uncomfortable.

Finally, Rose broke. He was so desperate to be with his family he thinks it is a fair trade. His legacy prospering and he can live happily with his children.

“We found him in a town as we resupplied. Arlin took a liking to him, and Chip, Him. So we took him back here and after a while i decided he and Elizabeth were deserving of such luxurious titles. They could either both try for the crown, or neither of them could. He chose to be crown prince, and is taking lessons to be the best he can.”

Niklaus nodded, looking bored. As if he knew it already. It irked him. Why was he being made to say things this tiefling already knew?

“Well, onto your deal.” he claps his hands, a charming grin now spreading across his face. “You will have a prospering legacy… if… I can take back what is rightfully my kingdoms.” Rose stalled, face slack. He looks around the room, wondering jf anyone else was there that could give him any insight onto what in the world this meant.

“Do you mean an item?” he tried. If it was an item that they accidentally stole, they could easily give it back if it meant that his kingdom could prosper.

If his kingdom could prosper then maybe, just maybe... he'd be free. If he had his legacy...

“I mean exactly what I mean. Something that is my kingdom’s, and I will take it back.” Niklaus had no tells, nothing to betray a lie. He tried to gain some insight into it, on what the item could be, but Nikalus was a wall of perfection. Eyes that could never look nervous and a grin that never faltered.

He wasn’t going to tell him what the item was, that much was for sure. Could he negotiate it at all? Was this deal specific enough?

Doubt after doubt plagued his mind. He wished he could talk to Finn or Arlin, get their opinion. Hell, even Drey would have enough intuition from his father to make the perfect contract.

“My Kingdom prospers, and you take something that was yours?” Niklaus nods slowly, hand resting under his chin.

“Easy, right? Something that wasn’t yours in the first place, something you shouldn’t have anyway. In that, you get your deepest desire. You get your legacy, and you get to have your family too. Perfect, yes?”

It was perfect. Too perfect. His heart beat faster, his son flashed in his mind. Beautiful dark hair that covered his eyes. His mother didn’t want to cut his hair until Rose was there… He imagined another child, hand in hand with his son.

Perfect.

“Deal. My legacy, for your item.” His hand went out, and Niklaus laughed, melting into the chair. His body slowly dripping onto the floor. His laugh got louder, suddenly coming from the entire room as he disappeared. The laughter faded away after what felt like an hour, turning out to only be a few minutes.

The guilt on his shoulders felt lighter, but something else rested in his stomach. He took a deep breath to settle his nerves. Slowly he inched to where Niklaus had been standing, looking out the window.

There Chip stood victorious over Elizabeth, grinning ear to ear.

"It will be fine." He mumbled to himself, hoping if he said it enough times he could believe it. "It will be fine if they have each other."

Chapter Text

Age 10

It was supposed to be routine. It was supposed to just be normal, instead it was hell. He was gone.

------------------- … —----------------

Arlin watched Chip as he tried to tie a knot on the mast. He laughed, his struggle amusing. He could never get the knot right, always needing help.

“Need help squirt?”

“No!” Chip yelled, panic lacing every word. “I got it! Stupid fucking…” The last bit was muttered under his breath, but Arlin still heard it. He rose slightly from his seat on the deck, eyes squinting at his boy.

“Chip!'' Arlin yelled, “Where in the hells did you learn that word?”

Chip jerked, head shooting up as his hands fumble. He loses the rope and it ends up shooting up taller than where he can reach. Chip curses again, and Arlin yells his name again. Cursing?! That cant be, sure this young boy was a prankster and troublesome, but he’s never cursed before!

“Uhm, i promised not to tell you.” He scuffed his shoe on the deck, wind rushing by.

“Ah, so it was Finn.” Chip jumped, looking to the topdeck. Finn heard his name, slowly appearing over the railing that separated the two decks.

“Sorry, what?” He called, looking down to Arlin who was sitting on a carton.

“We’re talking about how you taught my kid, the crown prince, swear words before he was 13.” He was fuming, disappointment hanging above him. He wanted to be the one to teach Chip swearing, he was planning on using it to prank Rose. Instead, he feels like the one who got pranked!

“Ah. That. Yes. Reminds me of the cum shark incident.” Finn nodded slowly, walking away. Chip giggles, looking away when he meets Arlin’s eyes. Arlin could only groan, unsure of what to do other than scold Chip for swearing at ten.

“You realize you can’t swear in front of other people, right? You’re a prince. You have to look regal and knowledgeable. Even King Ferin doesn’t swear in front of people.” He wasn't sure if he should use Jayson Ferin as a pinnical of honor, but he had to admit that the man ran his kingdom tighter than any ship. He was reliable in certain aspects as well. Not when it came to his daughter, who was staying at both castles. She traveled every month along with Ava. The engagement was going well, the kids don't seem to be taking it as anything more than being best friends. He admits it would be easier if they liked each other, but he was almost certain Chip liked that triton boy. He wasn't stupid- Finn has explained the significance of pearls to him before. That pearl bracelet hasn't left Chip's wrist in over a year.

“Cmon! That’s stupid!” He stomped his foot, scoffing at the idea of not being a potty mouth. It almost made him laugh. “I’ve heard Rose swear!”

“No you haven’t!”

“Yeah-huh! When you two argued and that tiefling was there. He said a bad word!” Arlin's eyes went wide as he looks up to the top deck, trying to see if Finn was up there again giving the boy prompts on how to best give him a heart attack. He was almost positive the kid couldn't understand undercommon, so how in the world did he know the filth that king Rose said? Because it was rude. Extremely.

“How did you..?”

“You talked about his language. I’d have to be stupid to not understand the context.” He rolled his eyes at the insult. “I may be dumb, but i’m not stupid.”

Arlin sighed, hand resting on his face to cool it. The day was hot, the wind the only cooling thing about it. A spraying mist of the ocean as it crashed upon the Midnight Rose made the deck cooler, thankfully.

“Go play with Elizabeth or something. She’s below deck.” Chip nodded, scurrying off as Arlin sighed again. What is he going to do with him? He felt a smile tug at his lips, his son may be a stubborn brat at times, but he loved him.

Then Suddenly.

Everything

Stilled.

The wind stopped, and no waves crashed upon the boat. It was such a drastic shift, the quiet so loud he was sure his ears were ringing. He sat up quickly, unsure what was going on. It looked as if a storm was coming in, graying clouds swirling like a typhoon. Rose was suddenly yelling, telling everyone to prepare for a storm.

The storm came quickly, washing in a rain that was almost blinding. With it came two large something’s that even Finn couldn’t think the name of. The, tentacles he guesses from what everyone was yelling out, were wrapped around the boat. It squeezed the deck until it splintered. While it had its grip on the ship, Arlin watched as these... things crawled up from them. They shambled onto the deck, eyes sunken in and red and black ooze spilled from their mouths. A roaring groan floated up from what was supposedly the belly of the beast. It caused a rock to plummet into his stomach. He watched as these, what Finn affectionatly called Yuckies, dropped onto the ship. The ship shook as a tentacle pierced the hull of the Ship and Arlin jolts, hopeful that chip and Elizabeth were safe.

He grabs his great axe, yelling support to his comrades. He hoped his words would encourage them to fight harder. For the prince, for their king! It was not a large crew today, a simple trip around in the ocean as they taught Chip more complex things about sailing. How to tell the direction with the stars, which way the current was by touching the water. Things like that. They could not be out far enough for a kraken to-!

One of the yuckies reforms as Drey shot a hole through its chest. It’s body looking like shredded cotton, every sinew and muscle fiber stitching itself together. He could see the fat spill out before it could fully regenerate and it made a sickening splat on the deck. It was covered in black ooze and he was sure the fat had turned grey-ish white from death. He was glad that was all that fell out, he wasn't sure he could keep the kids under the deck for a whole day while they cleaned guts off the ship. More black ooze drips from its eyes as they charge forward, shambling in every step.

“Chip!” Rose yelled, and it suddenly didn’t matter that a Yuckie was about to slash at his chest, it didn’t matter that a tentacle was ripping half the ship apart. No, what mattered was Chip. His wooden swords were not sharp, he could only do blunt damage. Not a lot of it either. He wacks at a Yuckie that was crawling on the floor, organs spilling out the ripped half. How it got that way was unknown to Arlin. Did he drag himself up the tentacle, did the kraken do it? He watched it drag itself slowly, offal spilling out of torn grey-tan flesh. Its blood made streaks across the deck as it slowly crawled itself closer to its target. Chip yelled out, smacking it across the face as he tried to get it to stop moving. he looked determined, as if all his training for sword fighting was suddenly for this. He had to stop watching as one of these wretched beasts slashed at his own chest. he quickly turned to face the Yuckie he was fighting. It had made four small gashes on his chest, tearing at his shirt and making blood seep into his clothes. It didn't matter, he only had to defeat this one right now. He had to help Chip.

Another rumble shakes the ship.It caused this monster he was fighting to lose its balance and Arlin saw his opening. With no hesitation, he raised his axe high and brought it down on the monster that was now lying on the ground. It made contact right in its rotting rib cage, slicing cartilage and breaking bones. He knew it would regenerate, so he had to be quick. He made another strike, slamming the blade above its neck. Black blood spurts out of the wound, covering both the deck and Arlin's hands. That should slow it down, at least. He turns quickly; heading over to his son who should not be up here at all.

“Chip, what are you doing?!” Anger doesn’t convey the right emotion he feels. It’s mostly fear. A fear he can’t describe, something deep and almost instinctual. “Get below deck, you could be thrown over!” He has to roar the words to be heard over the whistling of the wind, the sudden downpour of rain

“No!” He refused, kicking a hand away that was too gray to be normal. “I am a prince, I have to help! You and Rose are helping, so I will too!” Stubborn, stubborn, Stubborn! Does he not realize he is putting his very life in danger? Has he even grasped death yet? Did he understand what it meant to die? This wasn't some game he could play with Jay. If he dies, the kingdom's future will die.

“Christopher James, you are going to go below deck and make sure-” He tried to sound authoritative, but instead the waver in his voice cracked. That is when the deck snapped, perfectly timed with the snap in Arlin’s heart as Chip wobbled, suddenly all too close to the broken railing.

Arlin could do nothing as he watched Chip fall. His small body dissapeared over the edge to the water that was silent and also crashing It took a moment, almost far too long, for his brain to finally shift into gear that Chip - his son was going over the edge. Grabbing a rope that was lying on the ground from several knot tying lessons, Arlin could do the only thing he could ever fathom of doing while his son was in danger. He jumped.

By some miracle, he was able to grab Chip’s arm. Another miracle was that the rope didn’t snap under his weight. He did feel The shoulder holding Chip's arm in a vice grip give a loud pop. Pain shot through his entire arm and up his neck. By Chip’s scream he’s sure the same thing happened to him. With heaving breath he tried to throw Chip over the side of ship, which just resulted in more pain as he couldn't move his shoulder. His eyes widened as a pit formed in his stomach. He couldn't throw him over the side, the rain was making it hard for him to plant his feet against the side of the ship so he could climb them up, and the rush of wind carries away his screams of help. He didn't let the hopelessness sink in yet. He still had to try.

“Dad!” Chip cried, hand slipping so slowly. Arlin crushed his hand tighter, only wincing a little at the yelp of pain coming from him. It doesn’t matter if Chip was hurt, as long as he lives. He can apologize after they are safe on land and never ever going to the sea again. He would ban the color blue in that castle if it meant Chip could hold on a little longer. Gods, just hold on a little longer.

His own arm was starting to numb as he began to yell names for anyone to help. Rose, Finn, someone get them up already!

Oh gods, he felt Chip’s fingers slipping, his grip loosening as too weak fingers couldn’t hold on. He heard the cries of just a little kid with too much on his shoulders already, of the silly hotdog eating crown prince that he is sure the kingdom loves more than anything. His mind scrambles for something to save him. His dislocated shoulder ached as he tried to lift it. He couldn't move it at

He tries one more time to get his feet under him. To pull with his good arm to try to get his feet to the side. It was hard, with Chip dangling as a counterweight. His heart plummeted a few times as he thought Chip slipped when his own foot slipped. Somehow though, he finds a ledge that helps him stand against the storm that came out of nowhere. He felt a tiny bit better now that he could stand. As if he had some say in what happens next.

Finally getting a look at Chip’s face, his grip tightens. He has never seen Chip so scared. The kid couldn’t even scream as his nails scratched him, clinging desperately for any reprieve. Arlin couldn't tell if they both were crying or if it was the rain.

He slowly

Slipped

Through

His

Fingers.

The hole in the sea swallowed Chip whole. Arlin got the privilege of watching the horror and fear etch itself to be the last thing he ever sees on Chip’s face. Everything went white.

`~`

Arlin woke up on the deck, staring at the stars. It took a moment for his brain to catch up on what happened.

When the fog cleared, his heart sank. With no one near him, the realization that Chip was not actually on the deck. He heard the cries of his shipmates from below the broken deck. He wonders who else got harmed, he looks across the deck ti see blood and bodies. Not everyone got out okay. His stomach rolled as he tried to see if Chip miraculously got back up while he was passed out. He didnt see him lying there among the dead, thankfully.

With a low groan, he tries to get up. He heard Finn running around. His voice was thick as he calls out the name of the dead. Trying to wake them up. Arlin couldn't listen to the names right now, his focus on getting to the railing. To find Chip. His arm screams in pain and protest as he tries to shove it back in place. Expectedly, all that happens is his own scream of pain. If that won't work, he guesses he could swim with only one arm.

He leans over the railing, scanning for a body in the water. Even though all logic says Chip is now washed ashore some island, he couldn't help the feeling that Chip was just... gone. He couldn't let the doubt get to him. He shakes his head as he tried to go iver the railing into the the sea.

Before he could get a foot over, a hand pulls him back. He couldn't do much against it and was hauled back landing on his ass. Arlin looks up to see Finn, yelling in Primordial. It would be hilarious if his entire body didn't feel the pressing grief and guilt.

"Finn," he started to plead. He didn't care if the tears came at this point. "Finn it's Chip. He- he he- " he looked over the railing. He wasn't able to say the words. That he was gone. Thankfully, Finn got the message.

Looking down at Arlin he muttered "wait here" before diving into the sea.

Hours and hours of searching the ocean, and nothing. Finn had searched for miles, dashing and scanning to look for anything. He was afraid he'd have to look for a body.

He wasn't sure how happy he should be that he didn't find anything.

By time night was falling, they had evacuated everyone possible onto the emergency rowboats. Arlin, Rose, and Finn all stayed on one, rowing to one of the closest islands to check to see if Chip had washed ashore. With little hope, they stayed quiet as Arlin rowed as fast as possible. His head swam as he tried to rationalize why only Chip was gone. Everyone who had died, died because the Yuckies (they really needed a new name) bit them. Causing their bodies to infect and collapse. He tried to rationalize the Sea. That never works. The sea was uncaring. Vast and dangerous, she was vengeful and hateful. He didnt know why Chip loved the sea, when it was the very thing that took him away.

The night waned with their search. Early morning light meant their search was ending. Still no sign of Chip.

They made it back to port two days later, but the search party had already been started. Drey had called in a few favors the moment only half the crew came back missing their king and prince. King Ferin sent men to search, and the undersea sent soldiers to search the floor of the sea.

Arlin wanted to wait to tell Gillion and Jay. He knew it was inevitable as two more days pass. He wrotes the letters on the third day.

Jay replied the next day, offering help that her father was against. She wanted to send birds to help communication and help search. Her father thought it was fine just to send men. It was something they argued about for weeks, she wrote. In the end, she managed to convince him.

Gillion's response took about a month. Letter access was highly restricted for their champion. He was extremely upset at the news, especially since he was late to know. It was worse that he wasn't allowed to help look. They sent soldiers out of pure politics- they thought Gillion was getting too attached. Even though he sent more letters, none came his way from Gillion for a very long time.

In two months, the search party officially ends. People are still looking, of course. However, after a while, King Rose decides to be honest. Chip is most likely dead. The undersea stopped looking a month before, and the Raft kingdom stopped looking two weeks ago. Arlin has not stopped yet, though King Rose was starting to get worried. Drey had gone to many islands while he works. At each and every one, he looks.

Elizabeth took the crown. She was in bed for a week and hardly ate. Chey had to force her. Arlin wasn't sure he could face her for three days, until Chey told him she had wanted to see him. Itbstill took him an hour to gain the courage. Then, while he was standing in the doorway, he saw Elizabeth for the first time in a week. She was paler, her hair in tight braids, and he could tell her eyes were red from across the room.

"Arlin." She was quiet, a rasp to her voice that could only come from crying until you couldn't anymore. "Shut the door." He did as he was told. Walking over to her slowly, Arlin looked around the room.

Her room was always simple. She opted for a curtain on her bed at 10 and has loved it ever since. Her walls were a simple purple, her favorite color at the moment. A small stack of plates sat on the nightstand. Thankfully all of them were clean. His eyes were drawn to the lemon rug on her floor. He rememebered her and Chip making fake lemonade on this, using each section of their lemon as a gallon of juice. His throat closed with emotion as he jerked his head away. He couldn't get wrapped up right now. He stopped beside her bed, a window shining right by it. She often sat in bed and loomed out the window, as she was doing now.

It was several moments before she spoke again.

"Arlin." She said again, a choked sound coming from her as she tries ti get words out. " i have decided to be a queen."

Arlin jolts, shaking his head. "Rose said someone else could take the crown, you don't have to. Especially since..." since the prince has been missing for only two weeks at this point.

"I know. I know this may not be the right choice. But..." she looks at Arlin. Fresh tears ran down her face. "It's what he would want. I couldn't stop him that day I-" she choked through a sob. "I gotta take responsibility."And how could Arlin say no to that? She looked broken. But that slowly turned into a fierce determination that frightened him.

"It's not your fault." He had told her. She nodded, leaning to him for a hug. He holds her gently as they both cry. Both feeling the crushing weight of that guilt.
I could have saved you.

After all was said and done, the engagement to Jay was nulled. King Rose tried to talk to King Ferin that Ava and Elizabeth would marry. However, this angered the King. He yelled that King Rose only wanted to merge their two kingdoms. As Jay would never be queen, that was with Ava. Two queens of different kingdoms could not marry without their unification.

"And since Elizabeth is too stubborn," King Ferin had snarled to King Rose. "To not take the crown, then the deal is off. " of course, Elizabeth and Ava were furious. What infuriated Elizabeth even more, was how Ava took her fathers side in the end. She was miserable doing it, bur she made her choice. Elizabeth made her own.

Arlin looked down at the notebook he gave Chip on his seventh birthday. Stickers adorned it, and he noticed that there was something sticking out of one of the pages. Carefully, he opens the book. Past the sailing lessons, past the letter he wrote, past some things Chip wrote down. All to get to a photo. It was small. It must have been with a capture stone Chip got on his birthday. It was of him, Arlin, Elizabeth, and Jay. They all stood on the deck of the Midnight Rose and were holding their favorite flowers. It was a gift to Gillion. His birthday was spent training most times, or with his sister. So he never went oversea to spend time with his friends. This year, they all decided to send him some flowers. The only way they could was with a photo.

He absently wondered how he got a second photo when he noticed the writing on the pages of the journal. Even before he could decide if he had the strength to read it, the words were jumping out at him.

Dad took me sailing for the first time, it was great! I can't wait to get to ride the Midnight rose with him! I wonder if he would let me steer it?

He had to close it.

Chapter Text

Gillion opened his eyes to see himself standing in very unfamiliar fields of green. In the Oversea, surrounded by flowers and trees in a meadow. He looks around, not quite recognizing the space. His mind was filled with cotton, his thoughts moving through slogs of honey to get even the faintest memory of what happened last. It was something important- surely.

His brain snaps to the realization quickly, that something in his life was missing.

Chip.

“What’s your favorite flower?”

Gillion looked down, finding a young Chip. Even after all these years, Gillion could never imagine him any older than ten. He stayed forever young in his mind. Sparkling brown eyes that never lost that touch of childhood innocence that died when Chip fell off that boat. Short hair left awry because not even the best beauticians could get it under control… and his smile. It still stretched his cheeks until they threatened to split.

Gillion was so overwhelmed to find Chip so much shorter than him now. With Gillion being an adult now, freshly 21, he towered over the ten year old. He quickly sat down, crossing his legs so that their heights could be remedied even the tiniest bit.

Chip looks up at him expectantly, brow slowly creasing as the silence stretches. Ah, yes. The question.

“I…” He had started, but falls short of any actual answer. What could he say? He didn’t know flowers except the roses Chip’s kingdom was so fond of. His knowledge was limited to undersea coral and seaweed.

“Mine is roses. Duh.” he snickered, picking another dandelion to weave into the flower crown he was making. No matter how many he picked, it didn’t make a dent in the dense field in front of them. He could swear the flowers changed every time he blinked… Though all his focus was on the young boy in front of him. It looks like his flower crown was almost finished. All that was left was a handful more flowers and then to carefully weave in the ends.

Gillion opened his mouth to ask Chip a question- anything really- when Chip yelled. Not the chip in front of him, no, the one that was suddenly behind him. Gillion whips his head around to come face to face with the other Chip. This one stood tall, eyes boring into Gillion.

“Gill.” Chip’s words shook, his breath rattling in his lungs unnaturally. Gillion could hear the chatter of his teeth as the poor boy’s body shivered violently. His skin had an unnatural blue tinge to it that made Gillion feel a chill straight to his bones. Is this what Chip really looked like? Like he was a part of the sea- same as him? It wasn’t natural. None of this was. Even more unnatural, with every word something…. black dribbled out of his mouth, It looked thick, but seemed to move impossibly like water as it dripped down Chip’s chin.

“You gotta find me.” The plea made him seem so much smaller. Less like an adult trapped in his memories as a child and more like… the child he grew up without. The one he left behind

More of the black liquid dribbled out of his mouth, a small stream staining his clothes and soaking them till they stuck to his body. He was suddenly so pale, a thin blue tint covered his lips, his fingers gaining it as it scratched at his throat. Angry red lines bloomed quickly. He never clipped his nails.

The liquid dribbling out of his mouth suddenly turns into a current, a jet-like stream that blasts Gillion so harshly he was almost completely bowled over by it. It felt as if it lasted whole minutes, and it was the first time Gillion felt uncomfortable in water. Because whatever this was, wasn't water. It leaked into his gills, choking him bit by bit. It was thick, viscous, and smelled... not like sea water, no- it smelled uniquely of decay. He could hardly imagine what it felt like in a humans lungs. When the torrent of water finally ceased, Gillion found himself alone.

The warmth of the sun was suddenly replaced by the biting cold he knows to be the ocean. More north. The sunny day was overcast now; his hair sticking to his face as the rain poured. With a blink, the howling of the wind was so loud he couldn't think. He stood up, his chest aching with the need to search, to find his friend again. He can't fail - not again. Even with the wind howling in his ear, louder than his own heartbeat, his gut twists again with that incessent need to search. He felt as lost as a ghost. Wandering, searching, for something that wasn't.

In his, frankly pathetic, few turns of a search - Gillion once again found himself shocked at the sudden change in scenery. This time, there was an ornate door in front of him. A dark wood door, glistening with gold. The handle called to him, gold as well, it twitched. As if someone on the other side was trying to open it but it was locked. It was a few feet away, the flowers surrounding it seemed to have congregated near it. As if it was planted there with the door in mind.

Fighting against the wind and rain to get to this seemingly untouched door. He had practiced for this; it should not be this hard to walk through rain! It was water, he's good at water stuff!

The door was within arms reach, and Gillion reached out a hand to open it.

With a simple brush of his fingers, the door swung open with the force of the wind. A ship was on the other side, familiar dark wooden deck in sight. Quickly and without thinking, he runs through the door. What he sees confuses him even more. As if floating out of his own body, he watches from above as his own person is standing on the middle of the Midnight Rose. The sea was raging as tentacles wrap around the deck, digging into the wood and splintering it. Monsters travel down from each tentacle, all wielding swords and armor. They all passed right through Gillion, both in spirit and body.

He sees chip. Exactly like the day he lost him, the pearl bracelet still secure around his slender wrist. Arlin shouts something, fear and horror etched across his face. Gillion understands, having your son above deck in the middle of… this is inconceivable to any parent.

Then. Then, then Chip falls. His own body runs at him, trying so hard to change something that already happened.  Arlin dives after him, almost too late due to the shock. He watches as moments pass, Arlin trying his best to hold on with what looks like a dislocated shoulder. He watches fingers turn purple, so many tears that mix with the rain, and then he watches Chip fall. Arlin reached out one more time, but is stopped when Finn finally pulls him up.

This is what I need to find. Gillion thinks, trying to see the kraken in the sea. His body floats above the ship,, leaning around to try to get any gleaning details about the giant squid. To his surprise, however, Gillion spots someone else hanging above the air.

A tiefling, one with obsidian skin and horns decorated with jewels, caught his attention more than anything else. He was watching the doom happening below them, a bored expression on his face. Gillion opened his mouth to speak, but the tiefling slowly moved. His movements were fluid, seemingly comfortable with how he floated in the air. He made eye contact with Gillion, his own voice stopping from making any sound. The tiefling laid back in the air, arms crossed and tail hanging freely in the air. He cocked his head to one side, a wry smile on his face. A slow hand makes its way to his face, finger pointed over his mouth as he says something. The word comes from all over, echoing in his ears as if said within his own mind.

‘ s h h h’

With that word hissed through perfect teeth, Gillion falls.

Gillion springs up in his bed, hand clasping air as he tries to catch… something. He couldn’t help but put a hand to his chest as he tried to calm his racing heart. That didn’t feel like a dream. Too real and too sudden. A knock on the door didn’t help either.

With a steading breath, he plants his feet on the cold ground. This was all new to him. He hasn’t been above the sea often, mostly for things relating to the Rose kingdom. He was careful to have a moment before standing up, sure his swimming head would cause himself to fall. It didn’t help that he felt heavier, his center of gravity a little different than usual. He was told it was normal and it would go away, but he shouldn’t wear his armor. Actually, they insisted he doesn’t wear armor at all around the castle or else he will be confused as a knight. He was a guest of the queen and General, so he was given fine clothes to wear. He insisted that they be plainer, as he was simply from the undersea. Elizabeth thought otherwise, clearly.

The clothes were cotton, a simple black turtleneck that he wears all the time, though this one had openings for the gills and fins. The pants were baggier than he was used to, comfortable for his tail too. He was even given fuzzy slippers!

Another knock, louder and sharp. He nodded to himself, steeling his nerves and going to open the door. The door was simple and wooden, not quite suited for prestige guests yet better than servant’s quarters.  Finally reaching the door, he opens it to a familiar face.

Jay was no longer in the frilly dresses she used to love. Now she wore jeans and a blue jacket lined in fur. Her hair was much longer, right now in a braid that reached the middle of her back. She also was much taller, obviously. A grown woman. He couldn’t help but smile at how good she looked. She looked healthy.

“Gill!” Her face was bright, arms up as if to hug him. Though she stops before it happens. “Oh, sorry, can I uh, hug you?”

“Of course, my friend!” The bravado was so easy, so simple. It was easy to hide beneath it. Even easier with Jay here as she served a good distraction. With a smile on her face, she crashes into Gillion and squeezes. He returns the gesture, hearing an ‘oomf’ as the breath leaves her lungs.

“Gill…. Can’t… breath!”

“Ah yes, apologies!” he loosened his grip, not quite ready to let go of her. She felt so warm… it creeps into his skin and made his heart warm. She always felt like this, something warm and soft. It reminded him of sunbathing, in a way.

“Well, we were waiting on you. C’mon, everyone is gonna have lunch soon and we have to meet with the Queen before lunch.” They slowly released each other, both reluctant. “I’m sure you want to see everyone too. Arlin couldn’t stop talking about your arrival all morning!” She laughed, and that truly felt nostalgic. It still sounded the same. That was comforting, that something of her was still the same. She still snorts when she can’t breath from laughter. It still sounds like the ringing of a bell, and it still felt as joyous as it did when they were children.

“Yes, i’m sure Arlin missed me. He loved sparring with me! I wonder if we have some time before we depart…” They started to walk out of the doorway down the hallway. Something else that didn’t change. Still full of red and gold, and still modest. Though now there were pictures of Chip every once in a while. As a child, he loved getting his picture taken on those fancy gadgets from the west sea.

“You know,” she hummed out as they walked side by side. “We can wait a few days until you’re ready.”

They can’t wait. Every day he wasn’t allowed to look for Chip was one more day everyone thought he was dead despite the fact Gillion knew. Deep in the marrow of his bones, he knew Chip would never die like that. Without so much as a goodbye. Without fighting tooth and nail for living. It took him so long to get here, he wasn’t sure he had the patience to wait any longer.

“I dont think i can wait, Jay.” She nodded at the answer, as if expecting it. She sighed and shook her head.

“Well, then let’s get going! Not sure how long we can reasonably keep a queen waiting.” She tugs at his wrist, that smile never falling for a second.
