The wonders of cliché romance tropes (and how to subvert them)

Summary:

“There’s only one bed, Rui.”

Rui just gives him a shit-eating grin, “Yes, we’ve established that.”

━━━━━━
Or; the ups and downs of booking the (not-so) wrong hotel room, featuring Kamishiro Rui and Tenma Tsukasa.

Notes:

this isn't my first time writing something, but it is my first time finishing a work of mine and, therefore, posting it, so I'm kinda nervous sjdhs

I have this tendency of writing stuff that's way too long and never finishing it, so I tried writing something a lot shorter this time. my plan is to just keep writing short one shots until I'm capable of writing longer stories (and hopefully finishing them)

it also just so happens that english isn't my first language, so I'm kinda nervous about that too. I hope there aren't any grammatical errors. I tried to run any doubts I had through google, but I might've missed something

anyways, I hope this is still decent despite the length and the possible mistakes (I really hope there aren't any, I will cry if there are)
enjoy :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“...Oh.”

Rui looks at their given room number, then at the number written on the door. He checks again, for good measure, and comes to the conclusion that yes, this is, in fact, his and Tsukasa’s hotel room for the remainder of their troupe’s small (and spontaneous) trip.

“Rui.”

He turns to the blonde standing beside him. Tsukasa simply stares ahead, eyes blank and repeatedly blinking. Rui watches him rub his eyes harshly, look at their room for a few seconds, and then rub his eyes again with even more force, as if hoping that the sight before him is just a trick of the light.

“You’ll end up with an eye prescription if you keep doing that, Tsukasa.”

Rui,” the man in question repeats, “There’s only one bed, Rui.”

Rui looks back at their room. More specifically, he looks at the source of their current predicament, right in the center of the room. Yes, there is indeed only one bed. It looks rather comfortable, though maybe a bit too small for two people. He turns to his temporary roommate and smiles, “Fufu. I am aware.”

Tsukasa lets out a frustrated sigh, clearly not as amused as he is about the whole ordeal, “Are you? I feel like it’s not sinking in for you.” The actor grabs him by his arms, slightly shaking him, “There’s only one bed. We’re two people. We’re two people with one bed.”

Rui just gives him a shit-eating grin, “Yes, we’ve established that.”

The star groans and lets go of him, looking off to the side, “Why do I even try with you. I’m too tired for this,” he grabs his luggage — a big, yellow backpack full of star charms and stickers, very fitting — and enters the room, making a beeline for the bathroom. When Tsukasa reaches the door, he looks back at him, “I’m going to take a shower, we’ll settle this later.”

Rui follows after, carrying his own bag inside and laying it down on the root of their (Tsukasa’s) problems, “As you wish.”

With that, Tsukasa closes the bathroom door behind him. He can still hear the blonde grumbling to himself about the fact that he ‘should’ve known something was up with the way Emu was giggling the entire way here’ and how he ‘can’t believe that godforsaken director is so nonchalant about this’ — The walls are very thin and his star isn’t exactly known for being able to keep his voice down. He doesn’t mind. If anything, it makes him laugh.

How cute.

They stand next to each other by the bed, carefully examining the offender.

Tsukasa hums, expression pensive and hand on his chin — something Rui has noticed he does whenever he’s thinking particularly hard about something. His eyebrows are furrowed and he stares at the bed like he wants it to disintegrate from his gaze alone.

Rui lets out a low chuckle, “You know, we could always just share it.”

Tsukasa sputters and looks at him like he’s grown a second head, “NO! WE COULD NOT!!”

“Hm? And why is that?”

Rui knows exactly what he is doing. See, he’s a man on a mission. Is it really so wrong if he wants to cuddle his best friend and star actor? No, of course not. And ulterior motives aside, it’s not like they have any other option, unless Tsukasa would rather sleep on the floor. So, truly, his suggestion is merely the most beneficial outcome for both of them; he gets to cuddle his star and Tsukasa gets to maintain his perfect back posture.

Still, he hadn’t expected Tsukasa to be this flustered about it. The blonde looks away, but not fast enough for Rui to miss the pretty red spreading through his cheeks. And even if he had turned around in time, his now pink ears would’ve given him away, “Be– Because!”

“Because?”

“Because…” Tsukasa trails off, desperately searching for an excuse not to follow through with Rui’s idea. He seemingly gives up relatively fast, seeing as he only groans and spins back around to face Rui, “BECAUSE I SAY SO!!” He clears his throat and strikes a pose, “A-And I’m the leader, so you have no choice but to do as I say!”

Rui is not sure what he was expecting, but he definitely should’ve seen this coming. It seems he forgot to take into account Tsukasa’s stubbornness, an oversight on his part. He sighs fondly and shakes his head, “Well then, what does the o mighty leader suggest we do instead?”

“Well… Hm…” Tsukasa moves his fist up to his chin again, looking at the bed intensely. After a few seconds, he lets out an annoyed huff and pouts, “I guess you can take the bed… I mean, as the leader, it is my sworn duty to make sure our troupe is in top-tier condition, and that includes you too! Therefore, I shall sacrifice my good night’s sleep for your sake!”

Rui hums considerately, “Ah, but, Tsukasa, ‘our troupe’ includes you as well.”

“W-Well. That’s different.”

“How so?”

“It just is.”

Rui sighs again, unable to stop the fondness from showing in his voice (not that he’s particularly trying to hide anything, his star is just that oblivious), “You really are stubborn, aren’t you?” Tsukasa responds with an offended gasp, looking just about ready to argue, but Rui continues talking before he gets the chance, “I’ve slept on more uncomfortable surfaces before, I have no problem sleeping on the floor and letting you take the bed. A star needs his beauty sleep after all, no?”

Tsukasa makes another frustrated noise and crosses his arms, “I mean, yes, I do. But it’s precisely because of your… less-than-ideal sleeping habits that I want you to have some proper sleep for once in your life.”

“Fufu, what a gentleman you are~" he teases, though a part of him genuinely means that sentence, "But you’re exaggerating, I assure you my sleeping habits are not as bad as you think,” Tsukasa shoots him a look that tells him he completely disagrees, “Really, I insist. The bed is all yours.”

“No, I insist!” But Rui is already placing his pillow and blanket on the floor, “No– Rui!” He turns the lights off, lies down, and pulls the blanket over his body, making himself comfortable, “RUI!!

Rui closes his eyes, “Goodnight.”

For a good minute or two, it’s silent, except for the occasional sound of shuffling, which he can only assume is his star shifting around in place. Eventually, though, he hears a groan and the stomping of an (adorably) angry Tsukasa heading in his direction, “Fine! I guess we’ll both sleep on the floor, then!!”

Rui’s eyes snap open, “Huh?

Another blanket and pillow are thrown on the floor, not that far away from Rui’s own makeshift ‘bed’. Next thing he knows, Tsukasa is also lying down on the floor and covering himself with his blanket. Rui gets one glance at his pouty face before the star turns around with a huff, facing away from him.

“Tsukasa–”

“Shut up. Go to sleep.”

He stares at the back of the blonde’s head, dumbfounded. Once the bafflement fades away, he can’t help the gentle laugh that escapes him. This entire situation is just so… Tsukasa-like. It’s definitely not the most ideal way to go about things, but it’s endearing nonetheless.

“...Alright. Sleep well, Tsukasa.”

“I will.” A pause, “...You too.”

Rui just gives him a fond chuckle and closes his eyes.

The next time he opens his eyes, the room is still fully dark. He’s able to somewhat make out his surroundings, thanks to the few moonbeams the partially closed blinds let through. He stays there, unmoving, for a few more seconds until he’s fully awake (or at least awake enough to function). Once he is, he sits up and grabs his phone, lowering the brightness so as to not wake up the sleeping boy beside him.

3:42 am. Makes sense.

It’s not the first time Rui wakes up in the middle of the night for no reason. It certainly won’t be the last. He puts his phone down and prepares to go back to sleep, but he’s interrupted by a loud snore. He laughs softly. Even in his sleep, Tsukasa remains the loudest person in the room… Or the entire hotel, for that matter. Nene would probably be livid. He, however, finds it to be part of his star’s natural charm. He rolls to the side and looks at the boy peacefully sleeping next to him.

Hm.

It’s a cold night. The blankets are very thin. He can see Tsukasa subconsciously shiver every now and then. He himself is also fairly cold. The course of action to take next seems rather obvious, even if Tsukasa will surely have his head for it when he wakes up.

Rui carefully moves to the side, bringing his pillow and blanket with him. He puts his pillow right next to Tsukasa’s and takes both of the blankets, placing one on top of the other and covering himself and Tsukasa with them. He tentatively wraps his arms around the boy’s waist and buries his face in sunset-colored hair. He can easily smell the actor’s favorite citrus shampoo like this.

As expected, Tsukasa is very warm, as opposed to Rui’s typically cold body temperature. He hopes that doesn’t bother his dear star, and he especially hopes it’s not enough to wake him up.

He snuggles up to the warmth and falls asleep faster than he ever has before.

A few hours later, he’s woken up by the sounds of loud, flustered shrieking.

It was totally worth it.

Notes:

I was grappling with adding the squiggly line (~) or not. on one hand, I don't want to use the squiggly line, but on the other, it's Kamishiro Rui from hit game Project Sekai Colorful Stage we're talking about. so I ended up using the squiggly line. sigh.

it'll probably be a while before I post another fic. I don't know how it is for other countries, but in my country we're having midterms very soon. that's an exam every single day for two whole weeks or more, I don't know how I'll survive that. and then as if that wasn't enough, I have a very important exam coming up like a month later, so I'll need to study a lot for that too. point is, I'll be so busy for the next few months I probably won't have much time to do, well, much of anything. sigh, again.

on a completely unrelated note, I've been trying to tier on global because pandemonium is one of my favorite events ever AND IT'S SO HARD WTH. I'm not even trying to like. TIER tier. I just want to stay in like top 1000-2000, which I'm managing to do so far but like... I leave for 10 minutes and I'm already down like 100 places. can't even go to sleep in this economy, I wake up and I'm almost a thousand places farther down than I was the night before. these people need a life man, how am I supposed to keep up with that

the people who try to tier like top 100 or less scare me cause how do you even survive that. do you not sleep? do you not eat? do you not shower? do you do anything that isn't play project sekai?
like, I respect it, it's impressive, but GODDAMN I have no clue how they do it. I'm beginning to wonder if these people are even human at this point

...anyways. if you think you know me in real life, shut up, no you don't. please. I will cry.
to everyone else, have a wonderful rest of your day or night
