Chapter 1: The Fateful Encounter

Chapter Text

After the forest fire incident, Doldam Hospital gradually recovered and reopened to welcome patients. Yoon Seo Jung and Do In Beom finally finished all their work and returned. All the talented doctors are now gathered at Doldam. The trauma centre has also received its budget and is now operational. Master Kim has finally been able to lighten his burden.

As usual in the morning, Myung Sim left home to head to Doldam Hospital. On the familiar path, gentle sunlight filtered through the trees, creating sparkling patches on the road. She passed by the little shop she often visited. Remembering that the candy she usually gave Kim Sa Bu was running low, she decided to stop in and buy more.

Upon entering the shop, the owner, an elderly woman with a kind smile, greeted her warmly, "Good morning, nurse Oh!"

Myung Sim smiled, feeling the familiar and friendly atmosphere from the woman, and replied, "Good morning! I need to buy some more candy today."

The owner beamed, nodded, and quickly completed the transaction with the man beside Myung Sim. "Here you go, thank you," the owner said and then went inside to get the candy for her.

The man, preparing to leave with his items, noticed Myung Sim and politely nodded in greeting. Reflexively, she smiled and returned the gesture. Only now did she take a good look at him. He was dressed in a sharp black suit, tall, with neatly combed black hair. His handsome, angular face exuded an air of intelligence and maturity. His bright eyes reflected confidence and calm, leaving a positive impression on her. After greeting her, he quickly left the shop, walking briskly as if he had an important task awaiting him.

She watched his departing figure until she heard the owner from behind: "Here you go." Startled, she turned around and took the bag of candy from the owner.

She said with curiosity, "He seemed unusual. He must be from somewhere else."

The owner nodded, "Yes, he appears to be a lawyer from Seoul. He’s been coming here frequently lately. He must have just moved in."

Myung Sim felt a bit intrigued, "Is that so?"

The owner smiled, "Yes, he always behaves very politely whenever he comes here."

Myung Sim nodded, "Oh, Ne." She smiled, thanked the owner, and quickly left the shop to continue her journey to Doldam Hospital.

As she left the shop, she saw the man still standing by his car, talking on the phone. Myung Sim glanced at him briefly and then checked her watch, realizing she was about to be late. Deciding she couldn't afford any more delays, she quickly left.

After taking just a few steps, the screech of tyres followed by a loud crash and blaring car horns made her heart skip a beat. She immediately turned around and saw two cars in a chaotic tangle on the road. One car had lost control and crashed forcefully into that man’s vehicle, causing his car to be pushed back violently.

The man who had been standing near the car was thrown from his position by the sudden impact, his body crashing heavily onto the road. He lay motionless, his face contorted in pain, and it seemed like he was struggling with the dizziness from the collision.

The car that lost control, although not overturned, had its front end crumpled and shattered. Myung Sim immediately regained her composure. She took a deep breath and rushed back into the shop. “Mrs. Jung!” she shouted, “Call an ambulance right away!” The owner, still recovering from the shock, nodded immediately and tremblingly made the call.

Myung Sim didn't wait any longer; she went into the shop to find some first aid supplies. She quickly grabbed gloves and a medical kit, then ran back outside toward the accident scene, calling Doldam to report the situation.

“This is Oh Myung Sim. We had a serious traffic accident with two people injured. One female driver, about 30 years old, lost control, fainted, had a weak pulse, and clutched her chest, possibly due to a heart attack. She has a forehead injury…” She spoke while checking the driver’s condition. Then she ran over to where the man was, sitting down beside him. “In addition, a middle-aged man was hit by the car”.

Meanwhile, she asked the man, “Sir, where does it hurt?”

The man, eyes tightly shut and body tensed in pain, said, “My arm…”

She checked his arm and continued speaking over the phone, “There are no head injuries, but his body is heavily scraped from rolling on the road. He says his arm is very painful, and I suspect it might be fractured. I’ve called for an ambulance; they should be arriving soon. Ne, algesseumnida.” After hanging up, she continued to assess his condition.

She continues asked, “Sir, what’s your name?” Despite the pain, he struggled to respond, “Sung...Min.”

“Sung Min. Do you feel any other pain?” she asked, but this time there was no response. His eyes remained shut, and his groans grew fainter. She noticed his skin starting to pale. She checked his pulse and found no response. She immediately began performing CPR, using all her strength and skills to save him.

As she performed CPR, the sound of the ambulance siren grew closer. She continuously checked his pulse, and despite her exhaustion, she did not stop her efforts. Finally, her determination paid off, and his pulse began to beat again. When the ambulance arrived, she hurriedly stood up and quickly briefed the medical staff on the situation.

The medical team promptly took over, transferring him and the female driver onto stretchers, and she accompanied them to Doldam. Upon arriving at Doldam, the doctors and nurses were already waiting. She quickly changed into scrubs and entered the operating room to assist.

Sung Min finally woke up. Gentle sunlight streamed through the window, casting a warm glow on his face as he opened his eyes. Everything around him was still blurry. He felt an indescribable ache throughout his body.

As he struggled to regain consciousness, the door to the hospital room opened, and Myung Sim walked in. Her face was bright with a gentle smile. Seeing that he was awake, she felt a sense of relief and moved closer to him.

“How are you feeling?” she asked in a warm and gentle voice.

Sung Min tried to sit up but felt intense pain throughout his body. Seeing this, she helped him sit up. He said in a raspy voice, “I’m thirsty.”

She quickly got a glass of water and carefully handed it to him. “Here, drink slowly. Don’t rush,” she advised as he took the glass, making sure to support it so he wouldn't spill it.

“Drink slowly,” she gently reminded him as he sipped the water.

Sung Min sipped slowly, the cool water soothing his dry throat. When he put the glass down, she smiled and asked, “Do you feel better now?”

He nodded, but his eyes remained fixed on her, unable to look away from her gentle face. “You’re the one from the shop that day, right?” he tried to recall and asked.

“Yes,” she replied with a smile, her expression brightening the dim room.

“Where am I?” He looked around with a worried and confused expression, trying to understand his surroundings.

“This is the trauma centre at Doldam,” Myung Sim explained gently. “You were involved in a serious traffic accident. A car crashed into yours, and you were injured quite badly. You had a broken bone and signs of cardiac arrest, but I performed CPR, and your heartbeat has returned. We’ve done surgery on you. A doctor will come by later to check and provide more details about your condition.”

Sung Min looked at her with sincere and grateful eyes. “Thank you so much for saving me. I don’t know how to express my gratitude.”

She shook her head, her gaze warm and gentle. “It’s my job. What’s important is that you’ve passed the critical stage and are recovering. You’ve just woken up, so don’t overexert yourself. Please rest.” She smiled, gently helped him lie back down on the bed, and pulled the blanket up to ensure he was as comfortable as possible.

“I don’t know your name yet,” he asked, his face showing curiosity.

“I’m Oh Myung Sim, the head nurse here,” she introduced herself with a friendly smile.

Myung Sim smiled at him once more before leaving the room. “If you need anything, press this button,” she pointed to the call button by the bed, “and one of our nurses will come right away.”

Even after she had left the room, Sung Min continued to watch her departing figure. He recalled her voice when he was half-conscious, a gentle and warm voice like that of an angel.

“Oh... Myung... Sim...” He unconsciously murmured her name again, committing it to memory. At that moment, he knew she was the woman he had been searching for, and his heart began to flutter.

After a long day at work, Myung Sim decided to stop by Kim Sa's office. She walked through the quiet hospital hallway, the dim lights casting a gentle glow that created a serene and familiar atmosphere. Her footsteps echoed softly on the floor, and the nighttime air of the hospital brought a rare sense of tranquillity.

When she reached the door of his office, she looked through the glass and saw Kim Sa Bu sitting at his desk. The light from the desk lamp illuminated the medical files, casting a soft glow on his face. He was deeply engrossed in reading, his eyes reflecting determination and focus.

She smiled and gently knocked on the door to announce her presence. At the sound of the knock, Kim Sa Bu looked up. His eyes lit up when he saw Myung Sim and a warm smile immediately spread across his face. He quickly stood up and went to open the door for her.

“Coffee?” Myung Sim asked with a bright smile.

Kim Sa Bu nodded, stepping aside to let her in. She sat down on the soft sofa in the office, while he sat across from her and began grinding the coffee. The aroma of coffee filled the room, creating a cosy atmosphere. He poured coffee into two cups, and the fragrance of the coffee mingled with the quiet surroundings, creating a sense of relaxation.

“Here’s your coffee,” Kim Sa Bu said as he handed the cup to Myung Sim. His gaze was gentle as he looked at her. “This morning, when I received the call from the emergency room, I was really worried about you. I was afraid you might be in danger.”

Myung Sim took the cup of coffee, taking a moment to savour the aroma. “Thank you, Kim Sa Bu,” she replied with a playful smile. “Now you understand how I felt when you called to say you were in an accident on that bus, right?”

He laughed as he remembered that time. He recalled how she looked when he was brought into the emergency room. “Arasseoyo. Mian”

Myung Sim took a handful of candies from her pocket, clenched her fist, and when she handed them to Kim Sa Bu, she opened her hand to reveal the familiar candies, making him laugh.

She smiled gently, her eyes sparkling with concern. “Our talented doctors are back. You should delegate some of your work to them and not overexert yourself. Take better care of your health. After all, I can’t do much to help you. Eat these if you have a drop in blood sugar.”

Kim Sa Bu felt warmed by her concern. “Thank you, Sussaem,” he said, taking the candies from her. He unwrapped one and popped it into his mouth, savouring the sweet taste as a simple yet meaningful gift.

Since the forest fire incident, having coffee together has become a more frequent habit. Although she had previously declared she would no longer drink coffee, she eventually found herself sitting in Kim Sa Bu’s office, enjoying coffee after a long day at work.

The topic of their conversations was usually centred around the hospital, patients, events from that day, or reminiscing about old memories. Sometimes, they sat in silence, without the need for conversation; he would read medical records, while she would sit on the sofa reading a book. Occasionally, they would steal glances at each other, and if their eyes happened to meet, they would share a smile before returning to their tasks.

There was no need for elaborate words, just sharing the peaceful moments at Doldam. Simply being in each other's presence was enough to bring them joy, peace, and warmth. If someone were to say they were like a long-married couple, no one would argue with that.

Chapter 2: My Angel

Chapter Text

From that day on, Sung Min always tried to find ways to approach Myung Sim whenever she visited his hospital room. Every day, he found excuses to talk to her, even if it was just short conversations, which were enough for him to understand her better. He realized that Myung Sim was not only a skilled nurse but also a valuable woman with a kind heart and unwavering dedication to her work and patients.

Sung Min was also unafraid to reveal his humorous side. He would make her laugh with funny stories and mischievous jokes. Her smile was like a light that warmed his soul and a remedy that helped him forget the pain and fatigue during his recovery. Every time he saw her radiant smile, Sung Min's heart would strongly flutter.

Not stopping there, Sung Min also reached out to the nurses, doctors, and staff in the hospital—anyone he could interact with. Gradually, rumours began to spread throughout the hospital that he wanted to pursue her.

Since then, everyone began to act and behave strangely towards Myung Sim. Nurse Park, Nurse Eom, Dr Seo Jung, and many others would constantly tease her, while some others seemed irritated as if she had stolen their boyfriends. This feeling made her very uncomfortable.

After a busy Friday, Myung Sim felt she needed a bit of soju to relieve her discomfort and fatigue, so she decided to stop by Do-il's restaurant for a few drinks before heading home. In contrast to the chilly weather outside, stepping into the restaurant, the warm and familiar atmosphere immediately enveloped her.

The small, cosy restaurant had soft lighting that illuminated the old but clean wooden tables. The smell of food and alcohol mingled, creating a familiar and pleasant sensation. Do-il was standing in the kitchen, swiftly stirring a pan. When he saw her walk in, he greeted her with his signature smile. “Oh! Sussaem. Come in. Kim Sa Bu just arrived too.” His cheerful voice rang out amidst the sizzling sound of food cooking.

Hearing Do-il speak, she reflexively looked in the direction he pointed and saw Kim Sa Bu sitting there. Kim Sa Bu was in his usual corner, with a half-empty bottle of soju beside him. When he heard her name, he looked up. His eyes met hers, and he smiled. His smile was always warm, and it made her feelings of tiredness and annoyance melt away. It was like a warm light, soothing the anger and tension within her.

She took a shot from the counter and sat down across from him. Kim Sa Bu cheerfully poured soju into her shot, his skilled hand effortlessly filling her shot naturally. “Today was a busy day, wasn’t it?” he said, his tone calm.

She downed the drink he had poured and sighed, feeling the warmth from the alcohol ease her fatigue. “Yes, it’s Friday after all.” Her voice carried a hint of exhaustion but also relief at being there, in this warm and familiar atmosphere.

Do-il called out from the kitchen, his voice clear and humorous, “But it seems like you’ve been more irritable than usual lately, Sussaem.”

She turned to look at Do-il, recalling recent events. “Try having everyone tease you. Everyone’s been acting so strangely. Jang Gi Tae even yelled at me today, saying I broke his heart.” She recalled, her voice tinged with annoyance and dissatisfaction.

Do-il and Kim Sa Bu both burst into laughter at her story, their humorous empathy easing the tense atmosphere. Kim Sa Bu took a sip of his drink, his eyes sparkling with amusement.

Do-il, in a relaxed and teasing tone, said, “He’s a good guy. A talented lawyer, and I heard he’s quite famous in Seoul. He’s also handsome and seems wealthy. You should consider it. Who knows, you might become the wealthy lady of Seoul!”

She looked at Do-il with a tone of annoyance but couldn’t hide her smile, “You too, Do-il?”

Kim Sa Bu smiled softly, his eyes focused on her, then asked, “So what if he pursues you? Would you say yes?” His voice was deep and sincere, a question that seemed like a joke but carried genuine curiosity.

She was surprised by his question, unsure of how to respond. A hint of surprise and worry flashed across her face. She joked in response, trying to keep the atmosphere light, “We’ll see. He is quite something—handsome, smart, wealthy, and very charming.” Her answer made all three of them laugh.

Do-il finally finished his work in the kitchen. Seeing Kim Sa Bu and Myung laughing and joking together, he was infected by their joy. He grabbed a shot from the counter and joined them.

Do-il sat down, and immediately, a new atmosphere began to spread. The stories from the hospital continued, and the mood grew even more lively. Their laughter was not only the sound of joy but also beams of warmth that connected and uplifted them.

The three of them chatted non-stop, occasionally interrupted by bursts of hearty laughter and light teasing. As the shots were refilled and the stories grew more animated, the atmosphere in the restaurant became increasingly cheerful. All the fatigue and stress from a hard day's work seemed to melt away, replaced by moments of relaxation and the warmth of friendship and connection.

Time had flown by, and it was soon approaching the day when Sung Min would be discharged. As usual, Myung Sim came to the room to check on him. The room was filled with natural light, with gentle rays of sunshine streaming through the window, creating a warm and relaxing atmosphere. The potted plants on the windowsill added to the freshness and comfort of the space. As she entered the room, Myung Sim saw Sung Min sitting against the pillow, holding a book, but his gaze seemed to be wandering dreamily out the window, where the clear blue sky stretched out.

Hearing her soft footsteps, Sung Min turned around, his eyes lighting up with joy. His face brightened with a warm smile, a smile that could melt any heart. “Good morning, my angel!” Sung Min greeted, his voice lively and adding vibrancy to the room.

She smiled back and walked over to the bedside, speaking gently. “You’ll be discharged tomorrow. Are you excited?” she asked, her voice soft, both as a share of news and a congratulatory remark.

Sung Min pretended to look sad, his lips slightly pursed, eyes lowered, and eyebrows furrowed like a pouting child. “Not at all,” he replied, but his lips couldn’t help but curve into a smile.

She couldn’t help but laugh at his childish antics, a clear and cheerful laugh. “Don’t you want to be discharged?” she asked, her tone teasing.

Sung Min sighed, then flashed a mischievous smile, his eyes sparkling with playfulness. “Not really. I’m sad because starting tomorrow, I won’t get to see my angel every day,” he said, his tone half-joking, half-serious, with eyes full of sincerity and mischief as he looked at her.

Myung Sim smiled, gently shaking her head, her cheeks blushing inexplicably. “You really know how to flatter people, Sung Min. Do you say that to every woman you meet?” she asked, trying to sound serious but unable to hide the smile on her lips.

He shook his head vigorously, eyes wide as if to emphasize his point. “No, no. Only you are my angel.” His words were full of determination and sincerity, making her heart flutter slightly.

She blinked, looking at him with a mix of surprise and amusement, a hint of embarrassment flickering in her eyes. “That’s exactly why there’s a rumour in the hospital that you’re pursuing me,” she said, her tone teasing.

Sung Min looked directly into her eyes, unflinching, his gaze filled with determination. “What if it were true?” he asked, his tone serious but still carrying the usual hint of humour.

She smiled a smile that was both mysterious and friendly, her lips curving like a blooming flower. “I’m not the right match for you. Why don’t you find someone else? There are many beautiful nurses and doctors here who like you a lot. If you have someone in mind, I can introduce you,” she said, her eyes playful but with a hint of tenderness.

He laughed, his eyes sparkling with mischief, as if undeterred by her suggestion. “Then introduce me to the head nurse. I’d like to invite her to dinner,” he replied, his voice filled with certainty and sincerity.

She simply smiled and adjusted his blanket, her hands gentle and tender. She didn’t answer his question but said softly, “Please rest,” before turning to leave, leaving a trace of lingering warmth in the air.

From behind her, he called out eagerly and determinedly, “I’m not giving up. I will get to take you to dinner!”

Even without turning around, Myung Sim could still hear his words. His voice was clear and resolute, like a sincere promise touching the depths of her soul. His words not only made her heart flutter but also left her with an indescribable feeling, both surprised and pleased. This feeling was different from before when she always felt discomforted by the whispers and gossip around her.

Returning to the nurse's station, she could still hear the whispers of admiration and curiosity from the nurses and patients about her relationship with Sung Min. She heard teasing remarks, giggles from the younger nurses, and even friendly waves from familiar patients. At that moment, perhaps, a part of her was changing and fluttering with him.

Since being discharged, Sung Min couldn’t stop thinking about Myung Sim. The memories of the hospital vividly replayed in his mind: her gentle gaze, the warm smile she gave him. Even in his dreams, her image continuously appeared, making him feel that his heart was always warm and filled with joy.

He recalled the first day he met Myung Sim. It was when he decided to leave Seoul, escaping the pressures and noise of the city to find a quieter place for a new life. But he never expected that, in the process of searching, he would find her—someone who changed everything. The first time he saw her, her radiant smile melted his heart, dispelling the gloom he had carried for so long.

The accident seemed to have ended his life, plunging him into despair. But Myung Sim’s gentle voice awakened him, pulling him back to reality, and offering him a new chance at life that he never thought he would have. From that moment, Sung Min knew that she was the reason he wanted to start over, and he decided that he would build a new life alongside her.

Sung Min, undeterred by difficulties or weather, persistently pursued her day after day. He frequently brought flowers to Doldam along with a note:

“Dear Oh Myung Sim, my angel,

May I invite you to dinner? If you agree, please call me. You can reach me anytime, as I am always waiting for your call.

Phone number: XXX-XXXX-XXX

_ Park Sung Min_”

In addition to the flowers, he also brought gifts. Each carefully prepared small gift carried his heartfelt sincerity. His thoughtfulness made everyone at Doldam admire him and continually encouraged her to accept his invitations.

Myung Sim gradually felt a stirring in her heart. She felt happiness when she saw Sung Min, sensing the care and attention he had for her. He made her feel special, and that touched her deeply

Chapter Text

On a late autumn day, with heavy rain pouring down, the sky was gloomy, and the incessant downpour created a dreary and cold atmosphere. From early in the morning, the hospital became bustling and tense, as many accidents occurred due to the bad weather. The sound of ambulance sirens was relentless, and patients were continuously brought to Doldam.

Although the hospital had more staff, Myung Sim still had to participate in continuous surgeries. She worked tirelessly, ignoring her exhaustion to give her all in treating the patients. By the time she left the operating room, her body felt utterly drained, and the sky was nearing dusk. The sky remained overcast, the rain continued to fall heavily, and cold gusts of wind blew through the hospital corridor.

Kim Sa Bu had also just left the operating room with her. The two of them went to the nurses' station before he headed back to the emergency room. Glancing out the window at the heavy rain, Myung Sim sighed and said with a weary tone, “It’s still raining? The weather today is really bad.”

Kim Sa Bu nodded, his voice calm. “I heard the storm is expected to last until the end of the day.”

Myung Sim shook her head, saying in disappointment, “I was planning to buy something to eat before heading home.”

The nurse sitting nearby, having overheard the conversation, turned and teased, “With this heavy rain, it looks like your lovelorn lawyer isn’t coming today.” Her comment made Kim Sa Bu laugh, while Myung Sim blushed and shyly replied, “What do you mean ‘mine’?”

The nurse laughed cheerfully at having teased her head nurse. At that moment, she glanced toward the door and exclaimed in surprise, “Oh, it’s your Sung Min!”

Myung Sim, still in disbelief, furrowed her brow and said, “Don’t think you can fool me. With this rain, there’s no way he could have come.”

The nurse pointed toward the door, causing Myung Sim and Kim Sa Bu to turn their heads and look. Before them stood Sung Min, drenched despite wearing a raincoat. He was tightly holding something wrapped securely under his raincoat. Although he was shivering from the cold, he still tried to smile when he saw her.

Myung Sim hurried over to him and helped him take off the raincoat. Revealed was a food container wrapped carefully, still warm. She asked in surprise, her voice tinged with concern and a hint of reproach, “Did you come out in this rain just to bring me food?”

He smiled, his eyes shining in the hallway light. “Since it’s raining today, I was worried you might not be able to get food and might be hungry, so I brought some for you. I cooked it myself, so you can be sure it’s good quality. Don’t worry.” With that, he handed the food container to her.

Holding the food container in her hands, she felt touched. Despite the raindrops still clinging to his hair and coat, she felt very happy and warm inside. Tears welled up in her eyes and began to fall. She tried to smile and said, her voice choked with emotion, “Thank you, Sung Min.”

The scene made everyone around excited and admiring. The murmurs of awe, the sympathetic smiles, and the attentive glances were all directed at the two of them. Kim Sa Bu stood there, seeing her cry tears of happiness, and he felt glad. However, inside, he was very conflicted. Although it was a joyful moment, he felt as if he had lost something important, something he couldn’t tell the name of.

Myung Sim led Sung Min into the staff room, where the warm light illuminated every corner. The rain outside continued to patter, making the interior even more peaceful. She wrapped him in a soft blanket, then quickly poured him a cup of hot tea and gently handed it to him.

“Thank you,” Sung Min smiled, his cold hands cradling the cup of tea, trying to absorb the warmth from the hot beverage. The heat from the tea spread out, gradually dispelling the chill in his body.

Sitting across from him, Myung Sim saw that he was still shivering slightly from the cold, but his eyes radiated happiness, which made her feel joyful. She smiled but didn't forget to scold him: “Next time, on a day like this, don’t come out. The roads here aren’t like those in Seoul; it’s dangerous to be out in bad weather. I’d rather not see you as a patient and nurse again.”

Sung Min chuckled softly, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "So, you want to see me again?"

Myung Sim blushed, looking away. "Is that the only thing you heard from what I've been saying?"

He laughed heartily, setting the teacup down on the table. His eyes couldn't hide the joy he felt seeing her blush. Sung Min took the food box from his bag, carefully opening each compartment and arranging it in front of her.

The food box looked incredibly tempting, with the top layer containing fluffy white rice, the next layer featuring fragrant braised ribs, followed by vibrant green stir-fried vegetables and piping hot stew soup. The bottom layer included a few pieces of fresh fruit. Each dish was meticulously arranged, reflecting the care of the person who prepared it.

“Wow, did you cook all of this?” Myung Sim couldn’t help but be amazed, her eyes reflecting admiration.

“I used to learn cooking,” Sung Min said proudly at her praise, his eyes lighting up. He quickly handed her some chopsticks, “Go ahead and eat before it gets cold. I’m happy as long as you like it.”

She took the chopsticks he offered, unable to hide the smile on her face. Sung Min watched her every move, feeling a sense of fulfilment as he saw her enjoy the dish he had prepared.

“Is it good?” he asked eagerly, his voice full of anticipation.

“It’s delicious,” she replied, her eyes filled with appreciation.

Seeing her joyful smile, his heart felt warm. He watched her eat, filled with happiness at the thought that she was beginning to accept him.

Taking a chance once more, Sung Min said, “I recently found a very nice restaurant. I heard they have a new chef who cooks delicious food. I wonder...” he looked at her with a hopeful gaze, continuing, “Are you free tomorrow?”

Hearing his question, she looked up. A flood of complex emotions surged within Myung Sim. She had thought about his pursuit of her many times. Initially, she couldn't help but be touched by Sung Min's affection. He was a good man, handsome, and successful in his career. But she always told herself that what he felt was merely gratitude. She thought he might have mistaken that feeling for love, especially after she had cared for him throughout his long hospital stay.

As time passed, Sung Min's persistence and sincerity gradually made her heart flutter. She remembered the days he came to the hospital, bringing fresh bouquets and small gifts just for her. Seeing him appear daily, smiling and bringing joy to everyone, she couldn't help but be moved by his kindness.

Today, seeing Sung Min soaked from the heavy rain, his hands trembling yet still beaming brightly when he saw her, Myung Sim's heart felt a pang. The image of him braving the weather just to bring her a warm meal made her truly feel the deep and genuine affection he had for her.

Myung Sim couldn’t deny that his care and attention made her feel special. She realized that Sung Min’s love wasn’t just a fleeting infatuation. It was a feeling built on persistence and the sincerity he showed her.

She took a deep breath, making the decision she had pondered for so long. Looking straight into his eyes, she sensed the anticipation in them. She knew it was time to give both of them a chance to see where love might lead them.

"Tomorrow, I'm not free," she said, pretending to be serious, her eyes resting on Sung Min's face. Her voice was firm as if issuing an order, but inside, she couldn't help feeling a flutter of nervousness.

Hearing this, Sung Min felt a pang of disappointment. He lowered his head, his eyes clearly showing his dismay. The sight tugged at her heartstrings. He couldn't hide the sadness on his face. Seeing him like that, Myung Sim couldn't help but smile. Her smile appeared like a gentle wave, soothing everything.

"But I'm free this Saturday," she said, her eyes glinting with a hint of mischief. Her words were like a ray of light illuminating Sung Min's face, making his eyes sparkle like a child receiving a gift on a birthday.

Sung Min looked up, so surprised he couldn't believe his ears. His eyes sparkled with excitement, and his whole face lit up. He opened his mouth, stammering slightly in his joy, "Really? Did I hear that right?"

Seeing his enthusiasm, Myung Sim couldn't resist teasing him. She tilted her head, lips pressed together, feigning a serious expression, "Are you busy? Then forget it."

"Not at all. I’m free. I’m very free," he quickly corrected, his eyes anxious as if fearing she might retract her agreement. His sincerity and enthusiasm warmed her heart and made her feel happy. She laughed at his eagerness, her smile bright.

"How about 7 PM? I'll come pick you up," he said, his heart practically dancing with joy. He couldn't contain his excitement, feeling as if his heart was rejoicing along with this newfound happiness.

His hand gently pushed the food box toward her with a gesture of care. Meanwhile, Myung Sim couldn’t stop smiling, feeling a deep sense of contentment and happiness. Both of them felt the warmth spreading in the air, with laughter and conversation making the space more vibrant than ever.

Sung Min felt like he was living in a dream, a dream he had never dared to dream. She had finally agreed to go out to dinner with him, and now they were sitting across from each other in a rare moment of peace. This was the first time they had the opportunity to talk like this for an extended period, and every moment was filled with meaning.

He attentively observed every gesture of hers, from the way she took each bite of rice to the satisfied smile she gave when enjoying the meal. Sung Min seized the opportunity to learn more about her. He asked about her hobbies, daily routines, and many other things he had been curious about. He even shared humorous stories from his time studying and working, filling the room with laughter.

Their laughter echoed in the small room, blending with the sound of rain falling outside the window, creating a warm and connected atmosphere. The laughter and conversation not only eased the fatigue of a long day but also dispelled the dreariness of the bad weather outside. At this moment, everything seemed to stand still, leaving only the happiness and closeness between the two of them.

Chapter 4: The First Date

Chapter Text

On Saturday, after a long and stressful day at the hospital, Myung Sim got ready for her evening date with Sung Min. After finishing her surgery around 6 PM, she decided to stay at Doldam to change and prepare. In the hospital's dressing room, she carefully chose a black knee-length dress, simple yet elegant. The dress had a slightly flared skirt, adding a light and feminine touch. She also took time to apply light makeup, choosing a bright lipstick and a touch of blush to make her face look more radiant.

As the time for their date approached, Myung Sim received a message from Sung Min reminding her of their meeting time and expressing his excitement. Reading the message, she couldn’t help but smile with happiness. She quickly finished her makeup and left the dressing room, stepping out of the hospital with a mix of anticipation and joy.

When Myung Sim arrived at the hospital entrance, a beautiful sight awaited her. Sung Min was standing there, dressed in a sleek black suit that accentuated his tall, confident demeanour. In his hand, he held a bouquet of vibrant, fresh roses, their colours as bright and lively as his smile.

When his eyes met Myung Sim’s, his face lit up with a radiant smile. He seemed enchanted by her beauty, momentarily unable to look away. She couldn’t keep the smile off her face as she saw his reaction, feeling both happy and warm inside.

Sung Min quickly stepped closer to her, his smile broad and genuine.

“Myung Sim, you look absolutely stunning tonight!” he said, his voice full of admiration. He handed her the bouquet with tenderness. “These are for you.”

Myung Sim received the bouquet from his hands, feeling the warmth from his touch. The flowers gave off a gentle fragrance and vibrant colours, making her very happy.

“Thank you, Sung Min,” she said with a sincere smile. “The bouquet is beautiful.”

He looked at her with loving and tender eyes. “May I have the honour of linking arms with you?” he asked, his voice soft and polite.

She placed her hand into his, feeling the warmth and assurance. “Of course,” she replied, her smile growing wider.

Sung Min politely opened the car door for her and waited until she was safely inside. Once she was settled, he checked carefully to ensure everything was in order. “Are you comfortable?” he asked, his eyes reflecting deep concern.

She smiled gently and nodded. “Ne”

Sung Min flashed a satisfied smile and closed the car door. He settled into the driver’s seat, glanced over at her with an even brighter smile, started the engine, and began to drive.

The restaurant Sung Min chose for their first date was a special place, located by the river with a romantic and serene atmosphere. As they walked in, they were immediately enveloped in a setting that was both luxurious and cosy, exuding an elegant yet welcoming ambience.

The light from the crystal chandeliers gently reflected off the walls adorned with exquisite art pieces. The dining tables were thoughtfully arranged to provide privacy for each couple, covered with pristine white tablecloths. Each table featured flickering candles, whose soft glow created a romantic and enchanting atmosphere.

At the centre of the restaurant was a small stage where a pianist played gentle classical melodies, creating a soft, whispering tune that flowed through the space. The sound of the piano blended harmoniously with the gentle lapping of the river outside, creating a natural symphony that made the evening even more perfect.

Sung Min and Myung Sim were led to a table near the window, offering a view of the river glittering with the lights of the night. The table was set with pristine white porcelain plates, gleaming silver cutlery, and deep red wine glasses, all arranged with exquisite attention to detail.

In the soft glow of the candles, Sung Min couldn't take his eyes off Myung Sim. She looked truly beautiful, her eyes sparkling and her radiant smile causing him to be deeply flutter.

Both of them chatted happily, discovering more common interests and sharing everyday stories. He made her laugh with his humorous anecdotes and charming demeanour. While Myung Sim talked about herself, he listened attentively, showing genuine interest in everything she had to say.

As the dinner progressed, Sung Min grew more serious. He set down his cutlery and looked directly into Myung Sim's eyes with a serious yet sincere expression. Gently but with determination, he took her hand. His hand was warm and somewhat rough, giving a sense of safety and authenticity.

“Myung Sim,” he began, his voice deep and earnest. “From the first moment I met you, you touched my heart. Even when you saved me, I couldn’t stop thinking about you. I love you not only for your dedication and skill but also for your warmth and kindness. You are like a light that entered my life, warming my heart. Oh Myung Sim, you are my angel.”

Myung Sim felt the sincerity in every word. Her heart raced, and it seemed as though everything around her faded away, leaving only the moment between him and her.

Sung Min continued, “I want to see you every day, hear your voice, and see your smile. I hope you’ll give me the chance to do that.”

He held her hand a little tighter, his eyes filled with sincerity and longing. Myung Sim felt a wave of emotions surge within her. She smiled, her gaze soft and full of feeling.

Myung Sim nodded gently, her smile growing ever brighter. Her smile became the most memorable moment of Sung Min's life. He felt as if all his efforts and patience had been rewarded. At that moment, his joy was beyond words.

As they continued to enjoy their dinner, the atmosphere around them grew even sweeter and more promising. Their laughter filled the space, making the evening feel perfect and unforgettable.

Chapter 5: The Change

Chapter Text

After Myung Sim and Sung Min went public with their relationship, Myung Sim's life changed significantly. Their love story quickly became a hot topic of discussion at Doldam Hospital. Every time Myung Sim entered a room, she was met with not just admiration but also curiosity about her romantic relationship with Sung Min.

Today, just like any other day, after finishing her surgeries, Myung Sim returned to the nurses' station to handle some paperwork. While sitting at the desk, she received a bouquet from a delivery person. She gently opened the card and smiled happily upon recognizing Sung Min's familiar handwriting. The sweet scent of the flowers filled her with warmth and happiness.

Dr Seo Jung, standing nearby, couldn't contain her admiration and teasingly said, “I’m jealous of you, Sussaem.” She giggled, her eyes sparkling.

“Jealous of what?” Myung Sim asked, her face showing genuine surprise.

“Jealous because you have such a thoughtful and romantic boyfriend,” Dr Seo Jung replied, her voice tinged with a bit of envy.

"Isn't Dr. Kang thoughtful?" Myung Sim playfully teased back.

"I'm just grateful when he doesn't drive me crazy," Dr Seo Jung replied in an exasperated tone, pretending to raise her hand as if to hit him. Myung Sim laughed at the humorous contrast in their relationship.

The nurses standing behind Myung Sim quietly covered their mouths with laughter, and the atmosphere became more cheerful. Dr Seo Jung, with undisguised curiosity, moved closer and asked, “Sussaem, tell us more about lawyer Park. What do you two usually do together? Where do you go on dates?” The curiosity and excitement were evident on everyone’s faces, as they eagerly wanted to know more details about the relationship.

Myung Sim blushed and smiled shyly, “It’s nothing too special. We just go out for dinner, take walks, and watch movies together.”

Dr Seo Jung wasn’t about to let it go easily. “There must be something special, right? He’s quite the romantic type.”

Myung Sim laughed, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Sometimes, I visit his place.”

Dr Seo Jung intrigued, leaned in closer. “Have you two ever...?” she trailed off, her eyes gleaming with curiosity.

Without letting Dr Seo Jung finish her question, Myung Sim quickly interjected, “Cooking, he only cooks for me.”

“Cooking? He knows cooking?” Dr Seo Jung's eyes widened in surprise.

A familiar voice came from behind Dr Seo Jung, “I’m quite good at cooking, you know.” The group turned around to see Sung Min walking over, his smile bright and radiant.

He greeted everyone with a smile and gave Myung Sim a gentle kiss on the cheek as a greeting. This gesture made those watching admire the sweetness between them.

“It's so beautiful,” Myung Sim said, feeling Sung Min's affection.

“You’re really punctual, lawyer Park,” Dr Seo Jung teased, glancing at her watch.

“How could I be late for my angel?” Sung Min replied with a warm smile, his gentle demeanour making everyone around feel a sense of warmth.

“Sweet talker, I have to go see my patients now. I won't bother you two any longer,” Seo Jung said playfully, rubbing her hands together as if cold. She waved goodbye and left with a smile on her face.

“Are you clock out now?” Sung Min asked, his voice full of anticipation.

“Yes, I just need to hand these files to Kim Sa Bu, and then I’m done,” Myung Sim replied, her smile widening.

“Then let me help you take the flowers to the car first,” Sung Min offered.

"Ne," she agreed happily.

"Let me help you," Sung Min said as he gently took the bouquet from her hands. His courteous and thoughtful gesture made her feel touched.

"Thank you," she said, her heart filled with joy.

After Sung Min left, Myung Sim headed to Kim Sa Bu's office to deliver the files. She gently knocked on the door, and when she heard Kim Sa Bu's warm voice say, "Come in," she opened the door and entered.

Stepping into the office, she immediately felt the familiar and comforting atmosphere. Kim Sa Bu looked up, his eyes kind and welcoming, a friendly smile on his face. "Oh, Sussaem," he said, his familiar and respectful tone.

Myung Sim placed the file on his desk, a dark wood surface cluttered with papers and a few open medical books. "Here's your file," she said, her tone professional yet friendly.

" Gomawo, Sussaem" Kim Sa Bu replied. Instantly, the atmosphere in the office became cosier with the rich aroma of coffee wafting up from the cup sitting on his desk.

"The coffee smells wonderful," Myung Sim said, taking a deep breath to savour the aroma. The fresh scent of coffee filled the air, reminding her of their intimate conversations.

"Would you like a cup?" Kim Sa Bu smiled, his eyes inviting.

In a moment, she remembered the times they sat together, sharing a warm cup of coffee, along with deep and humorous conversations. But now, with Sung Min in her life, those meetings had become less frequent. Although she wanted to say yes, she knew she couldn't because she had a date with Sung Min.

"I would love to, but I have plans. Mian," she said, her voice tinged with sadness and regret.

Kim Sa Bu masked his disappointment with a gentle smile. "Gwaenchana," he said, trying to hide his fleeting disappointment with his usual calm demeanour.

Although both of them smiled, their eyes reflected hidden sadness and regret. As the atmosphere grew quiet, a soft knock on the door pulled them back to reality. The door opened, and Sung Min walked in with a bright smile on his face.

Sung Min approached with confidence and elegance in his suit, extending his hand to shake Kim Sa Bu's hand. "Long time no see," Sung Min said with a polite and friendly tone.

Kim Sa Bu stood up and returned Sung Min's handshake with a professional yet warm demeanour. "Indeed," Kim Sa Bu smiled, "Lately, with more patients, I've been mostly in the operating room."

Sung Min smiled and said, “Is that so? The patients are truly fortunate to have such a skilled doctor like you treating them.”

Kim Sa Bu responded modestly, “It's not just me. All the doctors at Doldam are very skilled.”

“Thanks to you and the doctors here, I’ve had the chance to pursue her,” Sung Min said, his smile radiant as he looked at Myung Sim with affectionate eyes.

Myung Sim smiled, her face glowing with happiness. She turned to Sung Min and asked, “Why did you come in here?”

“I noticed you hadn’t come out for a while, so I came in to find you. It's quite late. We should go now,” Sung Min said, his eyes showing gentle concern and worry.

Myung Sim nodded, giving Kim Sa Bu a farewell glance. Sung Min said goodbye to Kim Sa Bu, and the two of them left, hand in hand, leaving behind the quiet atmosphere of the office.

As he watched them leave, Kim Sa Bu felt a complex mix of emotions rising within him. It was a blend of joy for her and a tinge of sadness, with a subtle undercurrent of jealousy mingling with these complicated feelings. He felt a sense of loss as if he had just lost something very precious.

Chapter 6: The Confession

Chapter Text

The small street where Sung Min and Myung Sim strolled was lined with blooming cherry trees, adding a gentle pink hue to the surroundings. Cherry blossoms fluttered down softly, creating a delicate carpet of flowers on the ground. Lanterns hanging along both sides of the path cast a warm light, enhancing the romance of the spring evening.

After finishing their dinner in a cosy restaurant, they walked out hand in hand, greeted by the cool spring air. The gentle breeze carried the scent of flowers and the cheerful chatter of other couples passing by.

“The weather is really beautiful today,” Myung Sim said, her eyes sparkling as she looked up at the starry sky.

“But you are even more beautiful,” Sung Min replied playfully, his eyes never leaving her.

Myung Sim blushed, a shy smile spreading across her face. “You’re always so sweet with your words.”

Sung Min smiled softly, tightening his grip on her hand. “Has it been almost a year since we’ve been together? Time flies,” he said, his voice tinged with surprise.

She nodded slightly, “Yes, it does.” Suddenly recalling something, she looked up at him with an eager glint in her eyes. “I want to go to this place. Will you come with me?”

He raised an eyebrow in curiosity, but seeing her excited smile, he couldn't help but smile back. “Where do you want to go?”

“I want to buy some stuff,” she replied mysteriously, pulling his hand along with her.

They stopped in front of a brightly lit store, the lights from the window casting a warm glow. Myung Sim released his hand and quickly entered, her eyes fixed on the candy counter in the corner of the store.

Sung Min followed her, observing the focus in her eyes as she examined each type of candy. “Are you buying candy again?” he asked, his tone tinged with curiosity.

"Ne, I heard that there are some new types of candy out, so I wanted to try a few," she said, her hands still intently reading the ingredients on the packaging.

"The first time I met you, it seemed like you were also buying candy. I've seen you often buy candy, but I never actually see you eat it," he said, recalling their first meeting.

She looked up at him, smiling, "I bought it for Kim Sa Bu."

"Kim Sa Bu?" Sung Min frowned, surprised.

"Yes, he often overworks himself and drinks a lot of coffee, so he frequently suffers from low blood pressure and dizziness. His habits aren't good at all. I’ve told him to rest more and delegate some of his work to other doctors, but he stubbornly refuses. Since I can’t do much to help, I often buy candy for him. Just in case he has a drop in blood sugar or feels down, a piece of candy can help improve his mood," she explained, her voice filled with concern and worry.

"You understand him well," Sung Min said, feeling a bit unsettled inside.

Myung Sim replied, "We've known each other for over 20 years. We understand each other quite well," her eyes reflecting a hint of nostalgia and emotion.

Then, she happily held up a brightly coloured bag of candy and said, "I found it!" with excitement in her voice before heading to the checkout counter.

Sung Min stood beside her, feeling a wave of jealousy rise within him. He envied Kim Sa Bu when he saw how she understood and cared about the little details of his life. But when Myung Sim turned around and smiled at him, all those thoughts melted away. He silently chided himself for having such thoughts.

He smiled, holding her hand tightly as they continued walking under the cherry blossom trees, feeling the warmth from each other's hands and the gentle sweetness of the spring air surrounding them. The falling petals shimmered in the light, creating a perfect scene.

After the brief encounter with Sung Min and Myung Sim, Kim Sa Bu felt his spirit sink. Unable to focus on his work, he decided to leave the hospital and have some soju to alleviate his sorrow.

He sat alone, the soju shot tightly gripped in his hand, the heaviness of the alcohol merging with the burden in his soul. Images of Myung Sim replayed in his mind like slow-motion films. He remembered the first time he met her at the police station, where they had first saved someone together. Her surprised eyes when he introduced himself and when she took his hand. The emotions he felt at that moment were a mix of surprise and oddness, but the image of her at that time remained etched in his memory.

Then came the recent encounter, when she looked at Sung Min, her hands holding his, and they left happily. Those moments haunted him relentlessly, making him reach for the soju every time he thought of her. The bottles, which started as just a few, had now piled up on the table, forming a long line that almost covered its surface. Each time he drank, he wasn’t just drinking to forget, but also to try to preserve even a small part of her image, however fleeting, in his hazy dreams.

Do-il came out of the kitchen, sensing that something was wrong with Kim Sa Bu. He approached with a worried expression as he saw Kim Sa Bu preparing to open another bottle of soju. Without hesitation, Do-il quickly grabbed the shot and stopped him from pouring more.

“You’ve enough. What’s going on?” Do-il sat down across from Kim Sa Bu, his tone gentle but serious, observing every movement of Kim Sa Bu.

Kim Sa Bu merely clicked his tongue, looking frustrated. “Aizz. Nothing”

Do-il looked at him with suspicion. “Is that so? You’re drinking a lot for it to be nothing. This isn’t like you.” He emphasized the unusual behaviour of Kim Sa Bu.

Kim Sa Bu glanced at Do-il. “I’ve told you, it’s nothing.”

Do-il didn’t relent and continued, “Dr Seo Jung and In Beom have returned. The budget and necessary paperwork are all handled by Director Park. The trauma centre is also managed by Dr Dong Ju. So what is there left for you to worry about?”

Kim Sa Bu remained silent, continuing to drink. His gestures and attitude made Do-il realize that the issue wasn't work-related.

"Is it not about Doldam? Could it be about her?" Do-il leaned forward, his suspicion evident.

Kim Sa Bu lowered his voice, his expression suddenly tense, "Why did you bring up Sussaem?"

Do-il smiled slightly, realizing he had hit the mark, "I didn't say it was Sussaem."

Kim Sa Bu blushed, realizing he had let something slip. He took another gulp of soju to hide his embarrassment.

Do-il decided to ask directly, "Do you love her?"

Kim Sa Bu, feeling as if his weak spot had been touched, defensively retorted, “Eobseo!!”

Do-il disagreed, “If it’s nothing, then explain to me why you get upset when someone mentions to lawyer Park and Sussaem. I have caught you secretly watching her and feeling down when you see them laughing and talking together.”

Kim Sa Bu shook his head, trying to deny it. “Ani. I didn't”

Do-il raised an eyebrow. “Stop denying it. Your actions have already given you away.”

Kim Sa Bu remained silent, his silence serving as an unofficial admission. Do-il sensed the sadness in Kim Sa Bu.

"That means you do love her. Don't deceive yourself any longer," Do-il concluded, his face showing both sympathy and concern. He looked intently at Kim Sa Bu, hoping to help him gain a clearer understanding of his feelings.

Kim Sa Bu sighed deeply, his heart heavy with the weight of his disappointment and sadness. He lowered his head and slumped his shoulders as if burdened by the unreturned feelings pressing down on him. “Ne! Ne! I love her! I love Myung Sim so much! Is that enough?” His voice was soft but filled with pain and resignation, like a confession he had kept hidden for far too long. His words seemed to release the pent-up emotions within him, yet they also revealed the emptiness he felt as he faced the harsh reality that it was too late.

Do-il sighed, his eyes reflecting sadness as he heard Kim Sa Bu's confession. “If you love her, you need to tell her. But now what, she’s chosen someone else. What can you do? Lawyer Park is a great person and loves her very much.”

Kim Sa Bu sighed, pouring out his feelings to Do-il. "I realized I loved her after she agreed to be his girlfriend. When I lost what I cherished most, I came to understand that my feelings for her were more than just those of long-time friends or compatible colleagues—they were something deeper. But now I'm happy for her, she has found someone she loves, and he loves her deeply. He’s also wealthy.”

Do-il shook his head and sighed. "You’re speaking so calmly but you can’t keep hiding your feelings like this."

Kim Sa Bu lowered his head, his gaze lost in the glass of liquor, with anxiety etched on his face. "But if I tell her now, even the friendship we’ve built over the years would be lost," he said, his voice full of regret. He then took another sip of his shot, the slight burn spreading in his mouth, as if reminding him of the feelings he hadn’t yet confessed.

After hearing Kim Sa Bu's confession, Do-il shook his head with a sigh. He had sensed for a long time that the two had feelings for each other, though neither had acknowledged it. He had hoped that, in time, they would realize their true feelings for one another. But perhaps now it was too late. The two sat in silence, the quiet around them amplifying Kim Sa Bu's pain and disappointment.

Chapter 7: One Day in Seoul – An Unexpected Meeting

Chapter Text

After pouring out his heart to Do-il, Kim Sa Bu felt as though a weight had been lifted from his shoulders, but it wasn’t. Despite having expressed everything he had kept hidden, the pang of bitterness still crept into his heart whenever he thought of Myung Sim. Each time he saw her at the hospital, the pain resurfaced, making it difficult for him to control his emotions.

Recently, Kim Sa Bu realized that his coffee supply was running low. It seemed like a good excuse for him to take a break from Doldam and find some personal time. He decided to request a day off to go to Seoul, not only to buy coffee but also to relax and seek a bit of peace for his troubled mind.

Kim Sa Bu’s decision surprised everyone. Everyone knew him as someone who was always dedicated to his work, rarely taking breaks, let alone requesting a day off. When Director Park heard about it, he was curious and called to ask for the reason. However, Kim Sa Bu just smiled, declined to provide details, and said he had some personal matters to attend to.

On the bus, Kim Sa Bu sat silently, his gaze fixed on the passing scenery outside the window. The tall buildings and bustling streets gradually replaced the serene countryside views. His mind drifted between chaotic thoughts, with memories of Myung Sim continuously flashing in his mind. He recalled every small yet meaningful moment spent with her, from their simple conversations to the times they worked together under pressure.

As the bus entered Seoul, everything became more vibrant. The bustling traffic and the dazzling billboards created a lively urban tapestry. He felt like a tiny grain of sand in the vast city, lost among the hurried crowds. Stepping off the bus, Kim Sa Bu let himself be swept into the flow of Seoul, his aimless steps taking him wherever they would lead.

As he was lost in his wandering thoughts, a sweet aroma suddenly drifted into his senses, pulling him out of his reverie. He stopped and looked up, finding himself in front of a charming little bakery. The glass doors gleamed, reflecting the bustling street outside. The smell of freshly baked bread mingled with a hint of coffee, evoking memories of warm, comforting mornings.

Kim Sa Bu found himself smiling as he recalled Myung Sim telling him about this bakery. He remembered the excitement in her eyes as she described each delicious pastry. She had once expressed a desire to come here, but still not had the chance. Her bright, beaming face seemed to appear vividly in his mind as if she were standing right beside him. The blend of longing and regret stirred in his heart.

Standing in front of the bakery, Kim Sa Bu took a deep breath, letting the sweet aroma of the pastries and coffee soothe his troubled soul. He decided to step inside, seeking a moment of simple joy.

As he opened the door, he was immediately enveloped by the inviting scent of fresh pastries and coffee. The delightful fragrance wrapped around him like a warm embrace, drawing him into a space that was both welcoming and comforting, making his worries seem to melt away.

The small bakery was charmingly decorated, with each detail thoughtfully arranged. The space was predominantly covered in elegant white, creating a soothing and serene atmosphere upon entering. Small flower pots were cleverly scattered throughout, from tables to shelves, bringing a sense of freshness and vibrancy. These delicate flowers not only added splashes of colour but also made the space feel more intimate and cosy.

Soft rays of sunlight streamed over the tables and display cases, creating shimmering patterns that made everything appear even more vibrant. The harmonious blend of light, colour, and aroma in the bakery created a pleasant and alluring atmosphere, capturing customers' attention from the very first glance.

In the glass display case, the cakes appeared as tiny works of art with various shapes and colours. A tart adorned with fresh, plump strawberries, each berry looking as if it had just been picked from the garden, was arranged neatly atop a smooth layer of cream. Next to it, rich chocolate cakes exuded a sweet and alluring aroma, capturing the attention and tempting anyone who glanced their way.

In the other corner of the display, the soft and velvety tiramisu cakes were lightly dusted with cocoa powder, enticing with their subtle coffee flavour. Brightly coloured macarons, delicate meringues, and intricately decorated cupcakes were also beautifully arranged.

Nearby, golden, flaky croissants with evenly rolled layers and a rich buttery aroma beckoned, while pain au chocolat with its crisp, flaky exterior encased a luscious chocolate filling.

Each pastry seemed to whisper an invitation, captivating every glance and tantalizing all the senses. As Kim Sa Bu admired and considered his options, he felt as if he had entered a sweet, enchanting world where all his worries seemed to dissolve.

As he was immersed in browsing and choosing, a familiar voice rang out from behind him, "Kim Sa Bu?"

He turned around and found himself meeting the familiar gaze of Myung Sim. She was sitting at a nearby table, with a look of surprise and joy evident on her face. Her bright, sparkling eyes seemed to contain the entire spring sky, bringing him an unusually warm feeling. Kim Sa Bu's heart skipped a beat; he could hardly believe his eyes. A sudden joy surged within him, like a brilliant ray of light piercing through the gloomy clouds. He smiled in response as if the entire world around him had suddenly brightened, and all his worries and anxieties began to melt away in this unexpected moment of encounter.

After paying, Kim Sa Bu walked over to Myung Sim, who was seated at a small, charming table. The light from the window cast shimmering rays around her. As he approached her, his heart felt the warmth of this intimate space. He feels nervous and happy at the same time.

Myung Sim’s face lit up with a radiant smile, her eyes sparkling with joy. She spoke with surprise and happiness in her voice, “I thought I was seeing things earlier. I heard this morning that you took a day off, and I thought it was just a joke. I didn’t expect to run into you here.”

Her smile was like a gentle wave, soothing all the nervous inside him. Her clear, bright eyes sparkled with genuine happiness, making Kim Sa Bu’s heart feel warmer than ever. He couldn’t take his eyes off her, feeling as if the space around them had narrowed down to just these precious moments shared between them.

When Kim Sa Bu sat down across from Myung Sim, he smiled softly, his eyes never leaving her. "I'm surprised to see you too. What a coincidence," he said, his tone warm and genuine.

Myung Sim glanced at him with a mischievous smile, her grin growing even brighter. "Kim Sa Bu of Doldam taking a day off just to enjoy pastries in Seoul?"

Kim Sa Bu couldn't help but smile, his eyes sparkling with amusement, “Didn't you once tell me I should take more time off?” His voice was gentle but carried a hint of teasing.

Myung Sim squinted playfully at him, “Since when did you start taking advice from others?” Her eyes sparkled with amusement, making Kim Sa Bu feel as though every word she said was part of a cheerful and pleasant melody.

Kim Sa Bu looked at her with curiosity, “But why are you interested in coming to Seoul today? Do you have a date with lawyer Park? Where is he?”

Myung Sim sighed softly, her smile turning into a subtle, quiet expression. “Yes, he asked me to come to Seoul with him for work and as a chance for a date. But he just called to say there were complications at work and he’s not sure when he’ll be done, so it looks like I’ll have to explore on my own.” Her voice was calm, but a trace of sadness and disappointment was evident in her eyes.

Kim Sa Bu smiled gently, trying to lighten the mood. “Lawyer Park missed a date with you? That will become the hot news in Doldam.” His tone was mixed with playful teasing, hoping it would help Myung Sim feel a bit more at ease.

Myung Sim raised an eyebrow, but then her smile naturally widened. “Ne, I think so too. But at least I met you here, which was also hot news.” She looked at him with eyes sparkling with fresh excitement.

Myung Sim looked at Kim Sa Bu with a sceptical yet curious gaze, “And what about you? Don’t tell me you came to Seoul just to eat pastries?”

Kim Sa Bu smiled, his expression softening. “You once mentioned that this bakery was very good and that you wanted to try it. I happened to pass by, so I decided to stop by and check it out.” He explains with an honest tone.

Myung Sim raised an eyebrow, scepticism still apparent on her face, but her eyes began to soften with relief. “Really?”

“Ne,” Kim Sa Bu confirmed. “Besides, my coffee was running low, so while I was in Seoul, I figured I’d stock up on some.” He added, emphasizing the practical side of his visit.

Myung Sim's eyes suddenly lit up with a hopeful glint, as if a new idea had just popped into her head. “So, would you mind having a partner?”

Kim Sa Bu's heart raced faster, a happy feeling he couldn't quite describe swelling within him as he heard her offer. He smiled, his eyes shining brightly as he replied, “No. Of course, I'd be delighted to have you go with me.”

As Kim Sa Bu joyfully agreed, Myung Sim’s smile shone like sunlight clearing away the clouds. She felt a warm and joyful sensation spread within her, making the disappointment of Sung Min’s missed date fade away. Instead, her heart was filled with happiness. This unexpected meeting with Kim Sa Bu was a precious gift, making her feel as if the entire world had become brighter and warmer. It had been a long time since they had had a chance to talk privately outside of the work environment, and this moment was an opportunity not to be missed.

As Myung Sim chatted with Kim Sa Bu, she became completely immersed in the conversation, losing track of time and the surroundings. She focused solely on his every gesture and word until she suddenly glanced down at the table. It was then that she noticed the pastries Kim Sa Bu had bought.

“Tiramisu? It looks delicious,” Myung Sim remarked, her eyes sparkling as she looked at the plate of tiramisu Kim Sa Bu had.

"I bought it because it looked tempting," Kim Sa Bu replied, his gaze shifting to the plate of strawberry cake in front of her, where the fresh, juicy slices of strawberry stood out against the smooth layer of cream. "Strawberry?"

She nodded with a gentle smile. “Ne. I was torn between the tiramisu and the strawberry, but today I was craving something sweeter, so I chose this.”

Noticing Myung Sim’s occasional glances toward his tiramisu, Kim Sa Bu smiled and asked, “Would you like to try some?” His voice was gentle but filled with excitement as if inviting her to experience something delightful.

She looked at him in surprise, and before she could react, he gently scooped a piece of tiramisu and brought it close to her mouth. A hint of shyness appeared on her face, but the joy and excitement prevailed, and she happily opened her mouth to let him feed her. As the tiramisu melted in her mouth, the sweet and creamy flavour made her exclaim, “It’s so delicious!”

Seeing her happy face, Kim Sa Bu couldn’t help but laugh. She smiled back, her grin radiating a bright and genuine joy.

"Do you want to try mine?" she offered, scooping a piece of fresh strawberry cake brought it close to his mouth. He happily accepted, his eyes lighting up as he gazed at her warm smile.

“Is it good?” she asked, her eyes filled with joy and anticipation.

“Mas-issda,” he replied with a smile, savouring the freshness and sweetness of the cake.

As they continued their conversation, the joy and laughter of both made the atmosphere in the bakery feel even more vibrant and warm. Myung Sim talked about her favourite sweet treats, from refreshing tarts to soft and creamy mousse cakes. She described the flavours and textures of each dessert, sharing memorable culinary experiences she had enjoyed. Her eyes sparkled with delight as she recalled happy moments connected to these foods as if each pastry carried its own unique story.

Kim Sa Bu listened with attentive interest, clearly enjoying the conversation. He shared stories from his own experiences, recounting small but heartfelt memories and moments of discovering new foods. His narratives blended with Myung Sim’s, creating a delightful exchange that made their time together even more engaging and enjoyable.

Both of them felt as if time had slowed down and they savouring this precious moment together. They enjoyed each bite of the cake and each sip of coffee, relishing each other's presence and creating a memorable experience they would cherish forever.

Chapter 8: One Day in Seoul – Rabbit and Cat

Chapter Text

After leaving the bakery, Kim Sa Bu and Myung Sim strolled along the bustling streets of Seoul, heading towards the coffee shop Kim Sa Bu wanted to go to. Walking side by side, both felt a deep sense of joy and happiness, which was evident on their faces. It was rare for them to have such free time, let alone to spend it wandering the streets together.

As they passed by a stall selling headbands with humorous shapes, Myung Sim couldn't help but stop and take a look. The headbands and hats, shaped like bunny ears, cat ears, and other quirky designs, were displayed on racks, making the space lively and colourful.

Myung Sim's eyes sparkled as she spotted the headbands. She quickly stepped closer, her face full of excitement as she touched the items. She picked up a hat with cute bunny ears sticking out and noticed Kim Sa Bu was not paying attention. Sneaking up behind him, she gently placed it on his head, laughing joyfully as she did so.

Kim Sa Bu turned around in surprise, "What are you doing?" he asked, still amazed.

"Just wanted to see if you suited this style," Myung Sim said with a laugh. "Look at you, it's so cute!" She added, adjusting the hat to make it fit properly.

Kim Sa Bu touched his head, feeling the softness of the bunny ears. Realizing the shape of the hat, he burst into a hearty laugh. Myung Sim raised her phone to take a photo, saying, "Strike a pose! This is definitely a worthy photo." He complied, striking a cute pose with a joyful sparkle in his eyes.

After taking the photo and reviewing it, Kim Sa Bu quickly put on a black cat-ear headband for Myung Sim. "You should try one too," he said cheerfully.

Both of them looked into the mirror provided at the stall, smiling with satisfaction as they saw each other's images. Myung Sim, wearing the black cat-ear headband, grinned and said, "We look so cute." She then held up her phone to take a selfie, capturing the moment, and couldn’t contain joy.

The two continued their journey. As they passed through an area selling street food, the enticing aroma of the dishes made the atmosphere even more appealing. Stalls offering items like hotcakes, kimbap, and skewers were irresistible. The sounds of sizzling food, mixed with the laughter and chatter of passersby, created a vibrant and colourful scene.

Myung Sim tugged Kim Sa Bu towards a stall selling crispy, golden hotcakes, where the vendor was frying them up, their crunchy crusts releasing a mouthwatering aroma. "They look amazing. Let's try some," she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

Kim Sa Bu smiled and nodded in agreement. They bought some hotcakes and enjoyed them on a nearby bench. The hot, crispy cakes with their crunchy exterior and soft, fluffy interior made them both keep praising them. “It’s so good,” he said with a satisfied smile.

Watching her eat so happily, Kim Sa Bu felt a warmth spreading from within. Her eyes were sparkling and filled with pure joy as if each bite she took was part of greater happiness. Her smile was radiant and bright, like sunlight breaking through after a rainy day, illuminating the space around them.

Each of her gestures radiated enthusiasm and enjoyment of the food with a rare sense of relaxation. She had let go of her usual worries and stress, totally different from the image of the head nurse Kim Sa Bu was familiar with—a person who constantly faced long and continuous surgeries, carrying the burden of tension and fatigue.

As she savoured the food, the atmosphere around her seemed to become lighter and more relaxed. She smiled brightly, her eyes filled with contentment, and it felt like everything became more beautiful because of her. This was a rare moment when she allowed herself to fully relax, free from the usual tension and pressure, and Kim Sa Bu couldn't help but be captivated by that simple and sincere beauty.

Kim Sa Bu couldn't help but feel as if fate was playing a trick on him by granting him this rare opportunity. In these quiet and warm moments, sitting next to her and sharing simple joys, he felt like he was living in a beautiful dream. The feelings of love he had for her, always silent and heavy in his heart, were suddenly brought to life in these precious moments.

His heart, once burdened with deep feelings, now felt lighter because he could share the joy with her that he had only dreamed of before. Being by her side, sharing these happy moments, felt like an unexpected gift from fate, making him feel like he was living each moment to the fullest.

Even though he couldn't predict what would happen next or if his path would continue alongside hers, the moment of witnessing her joy and happiness would forever be a cherished milestone in his life.

As Kim Sa Bu's gaze settled on her face, a small but caught his attention. The smudge wasn’t large, but it created a clear contrast against her skin and seemed to have gone unnoticed by her. He knew he should let her know.

“Sussaem,” he said softly, not wanting to interrupt her joyful moment. “You have a little something on your cheek.” He raised his hand and pointed to the spot on his cheek where her smudge was, as a subtle guide for her to understand. His gesture was gentle and delicate.

Realizing his hint, she immediately raised her hand, trying to brush off the smudge from her cheek. She reached up, moving her hand quickly but not very effectively. The small crumbs seemed to cling to her skin stubbornly, refusing to fall despite her efforts. Embarrassment was evident on her face as she felt that the smudge was still there.

Kim Sa Bu saw this and decided to help her. He said, "Stay still, let me help you." He moved closer to her, his eyes filled with concern and tenderness.

Unconsciously, she obediently turned her face to him, her eyes never leaving his face. She remained completely still. Her eyes, which had been sparkling with joy, now showed a hint of embarrassment and nervousness, but also a deep trust as she allowed him to continue doing what he was doing.

Kim Sa Bu gently pulled a tissue from his trench coat, each movement appearing deliberate and meticulous. He carefully brought the tissue closer to her face with the utmost gentleness. Every action was thoughtfully considered to ensure she felt no discomfort.

As Myung Sim saw Kim Sa Bu's hand slowly approaching her face, she felt the closeness growing with each passing moment. Her heart began to race, caught up in the tension and anticipation of the moment.

He moved closer, the distance between them now only a hand's breadth. This closeness seemed to make the atmosphere around them warm and tense. Each beat of her heart made her face flush with a rosy hue. The soft touch of the tissue and the proximity made her feel nervous, with a rising sense of shyness.

As Kim Sa Bu gently wiped away the crumbs from her face, he suddenly realized just how close they were. Every movement of his was careful and meticulous, but as he finished what he was doing, the distance between them became more obvious than ever.

He looked into her eyes, filled with confusion and a hint of shyness, causing his heart to race. The tension and emotions of the moment seemed to reflect on his face, making his cheeks flush. He couldn't help but feel the shyness creeping into his mind, making this closeness feel particularly special and memorable.

Kim Sa Bu slowly stepped back a bit, creating a small but sufficient distance to ease the tension. His voice was gentle, trying to mask his embarrassment, “The smudge is gone now.” His words were a simple announcement, but the sincerity and concern in his voice made the moment even more profound.

She felt the embarrassment of the moment spread through her heart. Despite being helped, she couldn't hide her shyness as his gaze remained on her. She softly said, "Thank you," her voice carrying gratitude but also tinged with a hint of awkwardness. Her face remained flushed, making her thanks seem sincere and full of bashfulness.

Kim Sa Bu noticed her embarrassment and understood that he needed to do something to break the tension. He smiled gently, with a hint of relief in his eyes, and said, “We should go now” His words served as a way to shift the focus from the current awkwardness and ease the surrounding shyness.

His voice, though simple, was warm and comforting, like a light brightening the space and creating a smooth and natural transition. The statement not only showed his concern for her feelings but also helped them both move past the awkwardness to continue their journey together.

The two continued their stroll, enjoying the vibrant street scene and sampling intriguing foods. Myung Sim eagerly pointed out and dragged Kim Sa Bu to check out interesting items and new dishes she discovered. Each brief stop to explore souvenirs or street food made their day even more enjoyable and memorable.

Each brief stop to explore souvenirs or street food made their day even more enjoyable and memorable. The feeling of shyness from earlier seemed to have been forgotten.

Kim Sa Bu couldn’t help but smile at Myung Sim’s excitement and joy. She was like a child discovering the world for the first time, her amazement and delight completely unhidden. At this moment, if anyone from Doldam happened to see them, they would hardly recognize their head surgeon and head nurse.

Chapter 9: One Day in Seoul – The Coffee Store

Chapter Text

As the afternoon approached, Kim Sa Bu and Myung Sim finally arrived at the coffee store they had been searching for. The store, though small, was cosy with its dominant wood tones, creating a friendly and intimate atmosphere. The rustic wooden tables were neatly arranged to display the products, and the soft light from the hanging lamps made the space warm and relaxing. Upon entering the store, the rich aroma of coffee spread throughout the room, offering a friendly invitation that easily attracted coffee lovers. This fragrance, combined with the gentle music playing from a small speaker on the shelf, blended to create a truly peaceful ambience.

Surrounding them, wooden shelves displayed a wide variety of coffee: from whole beans and ground coffee to instant coffee packets with various brands and flavors, offering a delightful array that could overwhelm anyone. Each product was meticulously arranged, with detailed information printed on the packaging, making it easy for customers to explore and choose. Jars of whole coffee beans, sealed tightly to preserve their fresh aroma, were neatly lined up on the shelves. Bags of pre-ground coffee were stacked in rows, each type exuding its distinct fragrance.

The staff greeted them warmly, their bright faces showing genuine hospitality. Kim Sa Bu and Myung Sim were guided through the store as the staff introduced each product, “We have coffee from various regions, each with its distinctive flavour,...” the staff said, pointing to a row of coffee from Ethiopia with its characteristic floral aroma.

He gestured for Myung Sim to come closer, his eyes sparkling with excitement and anticipation. “Have you ever tried this coffee before?” he asked, his voice filled with curiosity and enthusiasm.

Myung Sim shook her head, her face showing sincerity. “Ani, I prefer more bitter flavours.”

He smiled with understanding and gently looked toward the staff. “I’d like to see the pure Robusta variety,” he said, his voice clear and confident.

The staff nodded and led them to a special section where the Robusta coffee beans were displayed. The bags of coffee were neatly arranged in rows, each labelled with detailed descriptions of its origin and flavour profile. This area was softly illuminated, highlighting the colours of the packaging and enhancing the appeal of each product.

The staff began to introduce each Robusta coffee with deep knowledge. "This one is processed using the Natural method, so it has a rich flavour with hints of fruit and wood," the staff explained, pointing to a bag of coffee... "And this one, which is roasted dark, will have a more intense and robust flavour," they continued, indicating another bag.

Kim Sa Bu listened attentively, his eyes gleaming with interest. He picked up several types of coffee beans and gently sniffed them, sometimes closing his eyes to fully appreciate the aroma. The scent of the coffee spread through the air, creating a warm and comforting atmosphere.

He turned to Myung Sim, his eyes observing her reaction. "What do you think of this one?" he asked, holding the coffee bag tightly and awaiting her opinion.

Myung Sim shook her head, her expression thoughtful and contemplative. “This scent is a bit too strong,” she said, her voice gentle yet decisive.

Kim Sa Bu nodded in understanding and said nothing more. He slowly set the coffee bag down and gently shifted his attention to other options. He continued to explore different coffee bags, patiently searching for a type that they could both agree on.

Every time he picked up a coffee bag, he gently sniffed it to appreciate the difference in aroma and didn't forget to ask for her opinion. The coffee scents, from the subtle hints of cocoa to the robust earthy notes, were carefully assessed. He kept each step of the process smooth and enjoyed the experience. Kim Sa Bu and Myung Sim enjoy the joy of discovering and selecting the perfect coffee together.

Kim Sa Bu’s every action showcased his dedication and patience, making the selection process both engaging and bonding. The staff continued to introduce additional products, adding to the variety and depth of their coffee exploration.

As Myung Sim savoured the coffee beans she had just discovered, a satisfied smile illuminated her face. Kim Sa Bu immediately noticed her reaction, his eyes sparkling with happiness.

"You like this?" he asked, his voice filled with sincerity and warmth as if sharing in her joy.

She smiled and nodded gently, "I love its aroma," she replied, her voice filled with satisfaction.

Kim Sa Bu felt happy seeing her satisfaction. He picked up the coffee bag again, carefully checking the information on the packaging to be sure. He inspected every detail meticulously and couldn't help but smile with happiness, realizing that her choice matched his completely.

He turned to the staff, his voice confident and cheerful. "I'll take this one."

The staff smiled and took the coffee bag from his hand. “Your husband really cares for you. I truly admire you,” the staff said, her eyes sparkling with admiration.

The unexpected compliment made both of them cringe slightly. They blushed, looking awkwardly at each other and then at the staff, “Ani! You’ve misunderstood, we’re not…” they said in unison, their voices slightly off-beat.

The staff laughed at their unison response. "You two seem so well-matched, and your actions are so similar. I thought... I’m sorry," the staff said with a hint of embarrassment, then left to go to the checkout counter, leaving them standing there with full embarrassment.

At the checkout counter, Myung Sim unexpectedly stopped Kim Sa Bu, her hand gently resting on the counter. “It's on me this time,” she said with a mischievous smile, her eyes shining with confidence and affection.

Kim Sa Bu looked at her in surprise, his expression clearly showing his astonishment.

She smiled and said, “You’ve brewed so much coffee for me. I need to thank you.” With that, she happily handed the money to the cashier, her face glowing with excitement.

The cashier smiled as they accepted the money from Myung Sim and turned to the register to print the receipt. While waiting for the payment, Kim Sa Bu turned to Myung Sim with warm and sincere eyes, his voice filled with gratitude. “Gomawo, Sussaem.”

Chapter 10: One Day in Seoul – A Minor Accident

Chapter Text

When they stepped out of the store, the two walked side by side in comfortable silence. They felt each other's presence through their footsteps, and a sense of happiness filled their hearts, making it impossible to suppress a gentle smile.

Suddenly, the sound of a ringing phone shattered this peaceful moment. Myung Sim reached into her bag to retrieve her phone, her eyes widening as she saw the name "Sung Min" displayed on the screen. She suddenly realized that she had completely forgotten about Sung Min today.

Seeing the incoming call, she felt a bit sad and disappointed because it brought her back to reality. She took a deep breath, pressed the answer button, and put the phone to her ear.

Kim Sa Bu sensing the need to give her some privacy, stepped away a bit but could still catch a glimpse of the conversation through her expressions and tone. He guessed that Sung Min was very worried.

After ending the call, Myung Sim turned to Kim Sa Bu and said, "Sung Min said he's near the fountain up ahead and asked us to wait there. It's too late for the bus now, so please come home with me."

Kim Sa Bu smiled and nodded. "Let's go, then," he replied, trying to maintain his smile.

After Kim Sa Bu's words, they continued walking in silence, but this time without any smiles, as both knew that their time together was coming to an end. A wave of sadness and regret filled their hearts. They both silently wished the time could turn back once more time so they could be together like this again.

When Kim Sa Bu and Myung Sim arrived at the fountain, the light from the street lamps and the fountain's illumination created a shimmering and warm atmosphere. The soft golden light from the lamps made the water in the fountain sparkle like gems, and the gentle sound of the flowing water created a soothing melody.

Suddenly, a teenage boy on a skateboard came speeding toward them from a distance. His feet moved rapidly on the board, and the sudden screech of the wheels on the ground filled the air. Kim Sa Bu saw that the boy was losing control of his speed and direction and he realized the danger of approaching Myung Sim

Immediately, Kim Sa Bu felt a surge of anxiety. Without thinking much, he acted on instinct. "Watch out!" he shouted, his voice filled with urgency. He rushed toward Myung Sim at high speed, his body tensed with the determination to protect her.

He tightly embraced Myung Sim, his arms wrapping around her like a protective shield. The urgency and worry made his actions swift and somewhat clumsy. He quickly turned her away to ensure she wouldn't be collided with.

The worry and urgency in Kim Sa Bu's eyes made Myung Sim's heart race. She felt a surge of emotions as Kim Sa Bu rushed towards her. Before she could fully grasp what was happening, she felt his strong arms envelop her tightly.

As Kim Sa Bu held Myung Sim tightly, she felt the strength and warmth of his body. At that moment, she was aware of his breath close to her and the comforting warmth of his embrace, making her feel protected. Her heart raced not only from the sudden incident but also because of him. She couldn't take her eyes off the concern in his gaze. She felt a mix of excitement and confusion at the closeness they were sharing.

When the danger had passed, Kim Sa Bu realized that he was still holding her. Seeing the surprise and emotion on Myung Sim's face, his heart raced as if he had just finished a marathon. The closeness made him feel awkward but also warm and content.

At this moment, everything seemed to stand still. The light from the street lamps highlighted their faces, and the noise of the evening seemed to fade away. The anxiety and tension from the dangerous situation had transformed into warmth and closeness in each other’s embrace.

Myung Sim's feelings at this moment were complex. Throughout the day, her heart fluttered many times, and she felt a deep warmth and happiness being with Kim Sa Bu. While she knew Sung Min cared for her deeply and attended to every little detail, the concern and care Kim Sa Bu showed her felt distinctly different.

When Kim Sa Bu gently released her, Myung Sim felt a sense of loss and disappointment. Even though they had parted, their eyes remained locked, unable to look away from each other. At that moment, their emotions were filled with a mix of confusion and shyness, clearly reflected in their gazes.

Kim Sa Bu was struggling with intense inner turmoil. He could sense her feelings through her eyes and felt a deep happiness knowing that she also had feelings for him. At that moment, he truly wanted to step forward, embrace her, tell her that he loved her too, and ask her not to leave him. But he lacked the courage to take that step.

Despite his reluctance, he had to break the moment once again. “Are you alright?” he asked with deep concern.

She was still lost in her thoughts and emotions, stammering as she replied, “Ne. I’m okay. Gomawo.” Their smiles revealed a mix of regret and shyness. Kim Sa Bu bent down to pick up the scattered bags from the commotion, and together they moved to a nearby bench to sit and wait.

At that moment, neither of them knew that Sung Min had witnessed everything from afar. From his vantage point, he saw Kim Sa Bu holding Myung Sim tightly, and the concern and care in his demeanour were unmistakably genuine. A powerful wave of jealousy and pain surged within Sung Min. Each gesture, glance, and smile Myung Sim gave to Kim Sa Bu felt like a sharp knife piercing his heart, intensifying his anguish. Especially the way Myung Sim’s eyes and smile were reserved for Kim Sa Bu. Those expressions, never given to him, only appeared when she talked about Kim Sa Bu, making Sung Min’s heart tighten.

Sung Min felt a surge of pain rising in his chest. He struggled to control his emotions, the fear of losing the one he loved making him feel as if he were on the verge of breaking down. Despite the agony, he knew he had to maintain a calm exterior to avoid revealing his hurt and insecurity.

“Myung Sim!” Sung Min called out, his voice echoing through the air.

When Kim Sa Bu saw Sung Min approaching, his feelings grew more complex with a mix of regret and confusion. Myung Sim smiled at Sung Min, but in her heart, the image of Kim Sa Bu and her feelings for him were still vivid. She felt torn and confused, standing between the two men she loved, each representing a different emotional world.

"Myung Sim mentioned she was with a friend. I didn't think it would be you," Sung Min said to Kim Sa Bu, trying to remain polite. "Thank you for taking care of her for me."

"Ani. I should be the one thanking her for agreeing to come with me," Kim Sa Bu replied, trying to maintain a light and sincere tone.

Sung Min turned to Myung Sim, gently tucking the stray hairs that were covering her face behind her ear. He asked tenderly, “Are you tired from being out all day?”

"Just a little," Myung Sim said, looking at him with a smile, trying to maintain her composure despite the turmoil of her emotions.

"Let’s go home," Sung Min said gently and warmly. Then he turned to Kim Sa Bu, "It's late. Please come with us."

"Gamsahamnida" Kim Sa Bu nodded.

The forced smiles of the three reflected the underlying tension and unspoken emotions. Sung Min felt the stark contrast between his pain and the calm demeanour of Myung Sim and Kim Sa Bu. While Kim Sa Bu and Myung Sim tried to maintain harmony and composure, Sung Min could only manage a strained smile, carrying with him sadness and anxiety over his feelings.

As they prepared to leave, the scene unfolded like a painting of intense emotions and contradictions. Sung Min held Myung Sim's hand tightly, with a gesture that was both resolute and protective as if to ensure she could not leave him away and to show Kim Sa Bu that she belonged to him. However, in his eyes, the tension and anxiety were palpable. Each step he took carried a heavy sense of burden as if his heart was being dragged along the ground.

Myung Sim, in Sung Min's grasp, tried to appear calm, but her face still bore a hint of sadness. She looked ahead with a faint smile, attempting to make the situation more comfortable, but she could not fully conceal the tumultuous emotions inside.

Kim Sa Bu walked behind them, keeping a respectful distance that was neither intrusive nor too far. He observed Sung Min and Myung Sim from the rear, feeling like a part of a painful encounter. Kim Sa Bu tried to maintain a calm exterior, but his mood was affected by the unfolding scene.

Myung Sim and Sung Min, despite walking side by side, seemed to have an invisible distance between them that Sung Min could feel most acutely. Each handhold, each step was a reminder of Myung Sim's feelings for Kim Sa Bu and the unspoken pain of Sung Min. As Kim Sa Bu quietly followed behind, his presence was also a reminder of Myung Sim's heart, which had never truly belonged to him from the beginning.

The mood of all three was very complex. On the outside, everyone smiled and appeared calm as if nothing was happening, but inside, each of them was carrying their own burdens and unspoken emotions.

Returning home after a long day, Myung Sim walked into her bedroom with weary steps. She lay down on the bed, staring up at the ceiling and closing her eyes, trying to banish the lingering images and emotions from her mind. As night fell, the silence in the room made every feeling and thought inside her heart clearer than ever.

Images from today replayed endlessly in her mind, especially those of Kim Sa Bu. She couldn’t forget the warmth of his body, his worried gaze, and the gentle, caring gestures he had shown her. These memories were like disjointed fragments, yet they formed a clear and emotional picture in her mind.

As her emotions churned, her fingers instinctively reached for the phone on the bedside table, reopened her photo album and scrolled through the pictures. She tapped on the photo of herself with Kim Sa Bu taken that morning. Each image was a testament to their closeness and genuine affection. Those moments brought back memories of their first meeting at the police station and the times they had supported each other in their work. She vividly recalled the happiness she felt when he invited her to Doldam. It felt like just yesterday, yet over 20 years had passed.

As she reflected on the events of the day, she realized that, without knowing exactly when Kim Sa Bu had carved out a place in her heart, his presence had become an indispensable part of her life.

The sound of a text message from her phone startled her, pulling her back to the present. Opening the phone, she saw a message from Sung Min:

“I'm sorry for missing our date. You've had a tiring day today, so please take a bath and rest early. See you tomorrow, my angel.”

Her emotions are truly complex at this moment. The smile from Sung Min's message cannot erase the worries and anxieties she feels about Kim Sa Bu. Questions about how to explain things to Sung Min, how Kim Sa Bu will perceive her feelings, and whether her long-standing relationship with Kim Sa Bu can continue, all create a powerful wave of emotion in her mind. She feels she is at a crucial crossroads in her life, where every decision will impact both her future and that of the people she loves.

Questions and worries continuously swirl in her mind, adding to her sense of heaviness and confusion. She fears that expressing her feelings might lead to losing Kim Sa Bu, which makes her feel anxious and afraid. In this state of mind, she decides to bury her emotions, hoping that this will help maintain her current relationships without hurting anyone. Lying silently in bed, she tried to find a bit of peace and stability amidst the turbulent waves of emotion.

Chapter 11: Heart’s Crossroads

Notes:

Today's chapter is a bit short, but don't worry. In the next chapter, Doldam's parents will have a lot of moments together. Haha

Enjoy!

Chapter Text

Since their accidental meeting in Seoul, Kim Sa Bu and Myung Sim chose to pretend as if nothing ever happened. Although they still try to maintain smiles and conversations while at Doldam, a sense of awkwardness, sadness, and regret acts like an invisible wall separating them. The evenings they used to enjoy coffee in the office, once moments of simple and joyful sharing, are no more. Instead, the atmosphere around them has become quiet and heavy, as if an insurmountable distance has been erected between them.

In the past, their casual conversations over a cup of coffee were not just a time to relax but also an opportunity to connect and understand each other better. Now, those moments have been replaced by silence, and their conversations have become shorter. Outside of work, they hardly share anything personal anymore; their connection has significantly diminished. The closeness and intimacy they once had have disappeared, leaving a cold gap between them.

Although outwardly they maintained a calm and amiable appearance, both Kim Sa Bu and Myung Sim felt a profound change in their relationship. What was once a passionate and close bond has now become distant and disconnected.

Sometimes, Kim Sa Bu and Myung Sim secretly glanced at each other from afar, but their eyes no longer met as they once did. The smiles, which used to express closeness and mutual understanding, now carried an underlying layer of pain and disappointment. The smiles were no longer a sign of pure joy but a facade hiding the pain and regret both felt.

Although both had a strong desire to express their innermost thoughts, the fear of hurting each other and the risk of losing their current relationship made them hesitate. This feeling acted as a psychological barrier, making every word and gesture heavy and tense. They felt as if they were standing at a critical crossroads, where every decision could change everything.

Even though Myung Sim and Sung Min's dates continued as usual, their peaceful evenings together no longer brought the joy and excitement they once did. Each time they sat together, enjoying dinner or going for a walk, Myung Sim often found herself lost in thought as if part of her was wandering elsewhere. She felt that she had become neglectful and no longer cherished the precious moments they used to share. The connection and enthusiasm that were once always present had now faded, leaving a void in their conversations and shared activities.

Sung Min felt the change in Myung Sim. It seemed that a part of her had become distant, no longer as close and warm as before. He noticed that her withdrawal and the change in how she treated him were signs of something deeper, possibly related to Kim Sa Bu's presence in her life.

Sung Min's feelings conflicted. He longed to have Myung Sim by his side forever and wanted to see her happy. At the same time, Kim Sa Bu's presence in her life made him anxious and uneasy. Sung Min had considered suggesting that Myung Sim quit her job and move to a different place, away from Kim Sa Bu, hoping that physical distance would help her forget her romantic feelings for him. However, he feared that if he did this, Myung Sim would feel forced and saddened, which could lead to losing her permanently.

Sung Min was struggling with his own emotions, and the fear that Myung Sim might choose Kim Sa Bu kept him unsettled. He was determined to act before she realized his true feelings. Although he was very afraid and uncertain about the outcome, he decided to take a risk and propose to her as soon as possible. He hoped that this action would clarify his feelings, keep her by his side, and save their relationship, which was on the verge of falling apart.

The first anniversary of Sung Min and Myung Sim's relationship had arrived, and Sung Min decided that this was the perfect occasion to propose to her. He had spent a lot of time thinking about how and where to do it, hoping to create a memorable moment that she would cherish forever.

Sung Min chose the restaurant where Myung Sim had first agreed to have dinner with him. It was a special place that marked the beginning of their relationship and changed his life. This restaurant not only held sweet memories but also held deep significance for him. With its soft lighting and cosy atmosphere, Sung Min believed it would be the perfect place to express his feelings. He hoped that this would improve their relationship and that she would officially be his.

That morning, Sung Min called Myung Sim to remind her about the dinner. He tried to keep his voice calm to hide the excitement bubbling up inside him.

"Good morning, my angel," Sung Min said with a warm voice when Myung Sim answered the phone. "I just called to remind you that we have a date tonight. I’m sorry I couldn’t come by to pick you up."

Myung Sim smiled, though he couldn’t see it. "Tonight? Is there something special going on?"

"Have you forgotten? You’re making me sad," Sung Min said with disappointment.

Myung Sim laughed upon hearing Sung Min's voice. "I’m just kidding. Today is our first anniversary. How could I forget? I’ll be there early."

His voice brightened again, "I miss you."

Myung Sim smiled happily. "I know. I miss you too. See you tonight. Bye"

After hanging up, Myung Sim felt a surge of joy. The excitement about the first-anniversary dinner with Sung Min made her smile throughout the morning. She reminded herself that she had control over her emotions, that she loved Sung Min, and that today was their special day. Wanting to create a beautiful memory, she had even taken a half-day off to go home and prepare for the evening.

Amidst her overwhelming happiness, a sudden feeling of unease arose in Myung Sim. She hadn’t seen Kim Sa Bu all day, nor had she heard anyone mention that he had taken time off. At first, she reassured herself that perhaps the emergency room was busy and he hadn’t had time to come by the trauma centre. But no matter how she tried to rationalize it, the worry did not completely disappear.

By the time Myung Sim finished her shift, her anxiety had only grown as she still hadn’t seen Kim Sa Bu. She felt an inexplicable unease as if something was wrong. With her mind preoccupied, she decided to look for him, hoping to find him and at least reassure herself that he was okay.

Myung Sim changed into her regular clothes and went to the emergency room. She looked into the emergency room, noticing that there weren’t many patients today, but still, she couldn’t spot Kim Sa Bu. This only added to the weight of her growing anxiety.

Filled with concern, Myung Sim wondered if Kim Sa Bu might be busy with some surgery that she didn’t know about. Although she tried to reassure herself, the feeling of unease continued to haunt her.

At that moment, Dr. Bae came out of the office and noticed Myung Sim standing there with a worried expression. Seeing that she seemed to be looking for someone, he approached her to inquire.

"Sussaem, are you looking for someone?" Dr. Bae asked, noticing the concern on her face.

"Have you seen Kim Sa Bu? I haven't seen him all day," Myung Sim replied, her voice full of concern. "Is he in surgery?"

Dr. Bae shook his head. "No, he hasn’t come to the hospital today."

Myung Sim continued to ask with a worried tone, "Did he take the day off?"

Dr. Bae replied, "Ani. He just called to say that he wasn't feeling well and would be late." He glanced at his watch and realized it was already nearing 3 PM. "Has it gotten that late? But everyone is busy right now. I'll send a message to see if anyone finishes early and can check on him."

Inside, Myung Sim's anxiety grew stronger. She was afraid that Kim Sa Bu might have fainted again, and she couldn't rest easy not knowing his condition. She said, "No need for that. I’m off work now, so let me go check on him."

Dr. Bae looked at Myung Sim and asked, with a hint of concern in his voice, "Aren’t you supposed to have a date tonight?"

She nodded, her tone filled with worry. "Yes, I am, but I still have plenty of time. If he is unwell, I’ll make sure he comes to the hospital."

She nodded, her tone filled with worry. "Yes, that’s true, but I still have plenty of time. If I feel that he’s not okay, I’ll make sure he goes back to Doldam."

Dr. Bae smiled slightly in relief upon hearing Myung Sim. He knew that, in this hospital, only she could truly get Kim Sa Bu to listen. Everyone here could see the care and concern Myung Sim had for Kim Sa Bu.

"That’s great," Dr. Bae replied gently, then said goodbye and left, leaving Myung Sim standing there with conflicting emotions.

Although the first-anniversary dinner with Sung Min awaited her, Myung Sim couldn’t stop thinking about Kim Sa Bu. She was worried about him and reassured herself that she would just stop by to make sure he was okay, and then quickly return to prepare for the important date.

Chapter 12: Heart’s Choice – The Care

Chapter Text

On the way to Kim Sa Bu's house, Myung Sim felt restless and anxious. He was someone who rarely got sick, which made her even more worried about his current health condition. Her mind was filled with swirling thoughts, unable to stop imagining the worst-case scenarios.

She told herself that if he was sick, he might not have the strength to cook or go out to buy food. The thought of Kim Sa Bu possibly enduring a fever alone without anyone to take care of him made her feel even more distressed. Myung Sim looked around the street but didn’t find any shops selling suitable food for someone who was ill. A wave of disappointment washed over her, but she quickly came up with another idea.

Myung Sim turned into a small roadside market. She walked past the crowded stalls, selecting rice, chicken, and some vegetables. Each item was carefully chosen, not just because she wanted to cook a nutritious meal, but also because she wanted to convey her care for Kim Sa Bu through these ingredients. She hoped that a bowl of hot porridge would help him feel better.

As Myung Sim stood in front of Kim Sa Bu's door, memories of the first time she came here unexpectedly flooded back. It was another day filled with worry and anxiety, but now her emotions felt even heavier. Looking at the familiar door, she sensed the difference between the past and the present. It was a moment of reminiscence that made her wonder if Kim Sa Bu still remembered those memories.

She knocked gently on the door and waited, her heart full of unease. After a moment, a voice came from inside, accompanied by a few coughs, "Please wait a moment." That statement stirred up Myung Sim's sense of worry.

As the door slowly opened, Kim Sa Bu appeared before her with a look of surprise and a hint of alarm. He stared at Myung Sim, feeling as if he were feverish to the point of hallucination, but when she spoke in her familiar voice, he was certain that this wasn't a dream.

"Sussaem?" Kim Sa Bu asked, his face clearly showing surprise and a mix of emotions.

Myung Sim gave a gentle smile, her voice warm and comforting. "It's me," she said, her tone soft and full of concern. "I brought some ingredients to make porridge for you. I heard you were sick but didn’t take a day off, just mentioned you’d be late. Since no one has seen you until now, everyone is worried and wants to check on you, but they’re all busy. I took the afternoon off today, and there's still plenty of time before my date, so I thought I'd stop by to see how you're doing."

Kim Sa Bu's face gradually softened, his surprise giving way to deep happiness. He felt a sense of relief seeing her and knew that she still cared about him. He invited her in, a bit flustered but pleased. Stepping back to let her enter, his eyes remained fixed on her, as if he couldn’t believe this unexpected visit.

Kim Sa Bu's house, though not large, was arranged very efficiently, creating a warm and cosy living space. The small living room featured a comfortable brown sofa placed in the centre of the room. The sofa, though well-used, still maintained its comfort. In front of the sofa was a low coffee table, which was cluttered with various items.

Scattered across the table were medical documents, reflecting his busy and diligent work habits. A half-finished cup of coffee rested in one corner of the table, likely abandoned when he began to feel unwell. Nearby, a partially eaten sweet roll indicated his attempt to feel better with some simple food, though it seemed his efforts had not been very successful.

Myung Sim looked around the room with a sense of warmth. She realized that, although there was nothing particularly special, everything reflected Kim Sa Bu's care and effort to maintain a stable and comfortable life despite less-than-ideal conditions. The simplicity and careful arrangement of his living space mirrored his thoughtful and meticulous personality.

In Kim Sa Bu's home, the kitchen area connects directly with the living room, making the space feel more open and airy.

The kitchen area is designed simply yet effectively, featuring a small bar that juts out from the wall. On the bar, there are basic appliances like an electric stove, a microwave, and some cooking utensils. The shelves on the wall hold spices, bowls, and other kitchen tools, arranged neatly and easily accessible.

As Kim Sa Bu stood nearby watching Myung Sim prepare the ingredients, he felt deeply touched by her considerate care. Despite feeling a bit confused and surprised by her visit, his heart was warmed by her concern for him.

When Myung Sim started taking out the ingredients and preparing to cook the porridge, Kim Sa Bu looked at her and asked, "Why didn’t you just buy some porridge for convenience?"

She replied, still focused on her work, "I did plan to do that, but there’s no place around your house that sells it; there’s just a small market nearby, so I stopped by there. Cooking porridge isn’t too complicated, so it’ll be ready soon. Have you taken your medicine yet?"

Kim Sa Bu replied, "I’ve taken my medicine, and I’ve had lunch."

Myung Sim raised an eyebrow and couldn’t help but gently criticize, "Lunch with sweet roll and coffee?"

When Myung Sim scolded him, Kim Sa Bu could only scratch his head with a guilty expression, like a child caught lying by their mother. Without waiting any longer, Myung Sim walked over and guided him to the sofa. "Please lie down and rest. The porridge will be ready soon."

Kim Sa Bu knew Myung Sim well; if he didn’t listen, she would scold him with her lion’s roar tone to scold him. Feeling genuinely tired and uncomfortable, he obediently lay down on the sofa as she requested.

Myung Sim sat down beside him, her concern and care visible on her face. She gently placed her hand on his forehead, feeling the elevated temperature of his body. Her hands were warm and gentle, offering him a comforting sensation.

Kim Sa Bu felt Myung Sim's thoughtful care and deep affection. Even though he was not feeling well, her presence and attentive care made him feel very happy. He didn't expect that, in his weak and unwell state, having her by his side to care for him with such dedication and warmth

"It's too hot," she said with concern, her voice gentle but filled with care.

Myung Sim walked into the kitchen with concern evident on her face. She took a clean cloth, dipped it in cold water to cool it, and then wrung it out before gently placing it on Kim Sa Bu's forehead. The cold cloth immediately alleviated the burning sensation on his forehead.

She then quickly went into Kim Sa Bu's room and found a soft, warm blanket. She carefully draped the blanket over him, making sure he was as comfortable as possible.

Kim Sa Bu lay on the sofa, acutely aware of how exhausted he felt. Although he wanted to observe her, to see every gesture and expression as she cared for him, the fever made him weary. The soft light from the living room and the gentle sounds from the kitchen created a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere.

At this moment, Kim Sa Bu's eyes grew heavy, and despite his efforts to stay awake, fatigue gradually took over. While still watching Myung Sim in the kitchen, he slowly drifted off to sleep, savouring the warmth from the blanket and the presence of the woman he loved.

When the porridge was ready, Myung Sim ladled out a bowl and then took some medicine and a glass of warm water. She quietly approached the sofa, placing everything on the side table next to him. She touched his forehead, feeling the fever begin to subside, and she sighed with relief. The tranquillity in the room made her feel as though the weight of her worry had been partially lifted.

Seeing him sleep, memories of the times he overworked himself, without a moment of rest, flashed through her mind. She recalled the image of him constantly frowning with worry and the times he risked his life to save patients, always putting himself in danger for others. Truly, now that he was lying there peacefully, with no worries on his face, it made her feel a strange sense of peace.

Since that day, the relationship between Kim Sa Bu and Myung Sim had changed significantly, and this change brought her deep sadness. Previously, everything between them was natural and easy, with frequent and intimate moments together, but now things had become more complicated. She wondered if things might have turned out differently if she had recognized her feelings for him earlier.

Perhaps they would not have had to endure the anxiety and pain of realizing the changes in their relationship. They might have been able to face challenges together, share joy and sorrow, and maintain the closeness they once had.

But now, everything has changed. Unspoken feelings and missed opportunities make her feel as if a door has closed, leaving no chance for repair. Reflecting on these things weighs heavily on her. Each time she looks back at the beautiful memories and sweet moments they shared, a deep sense of regret envelops her. She wonders if their relationship can recover and return to what it once was, or if these changes have created an insurmountable distance. The unanswered questions haunt her mind, leaving her feeling lost and in pain.

She took slow, hesitant steps, gingerly raising her hand to gently caress his face. Her fingertips glided over his warm skin, feeling its softness. Her gentle smile reflected her deep love and concern, but when he stirred, her instinctive reaction was to quickly withdraw her hand. She felt anxious about the intrusion, fearing that her actions might make him uncomfortable.

In his sleep, Kim Sa Bu felt the gentle warmth of her hand resting on his cheek. The hand wasn't overly soft; it had a slight roughness, but it was incredibly warm, like a comforting source of energy that conveyed a sense of safety and love. In his hazy state, he couldn't be entirely sure if this was real or if he was dreaming.

As his senses became clearer, it felt like he was being pulled from the dream back to reality. He felt her warmth more intimately than ever. Under the weight of fatigue, he slowly opened his eyes. The blurred image gradually came into focus, and he saw her sitting right beside him, slightly leaning towards him with a gentle smile on her lips. This scene made a soft smile spread across his face. Realizing her presence by his side, he felt his heart warm more than ever as if a beautiful dream had turned into reality.

She looked at him with gentle, concerned eyes. Pressing her lips together, she tried to maintain calm and confidence as she said, "Wake up, let's have some porridge, and take your medicine."

Her voice was gentle, like a soothing wave, free from any sign of urgency or stress. She carefully helped Kim Sa Bu sit up, her every movement reflecting deep concern. Seeing that he was still quite weak, she worried that he might spill the porridge. Taking the bowl of porridge, she scooped out a small amount, blew gently to cool it, and then brought it close to his lips.

As the spoon of porridge gently touched Kim Sa Bu's lips, her attentiveness took him by surprise. His eyes widened, with amazement and emotion visible on his face. The surprise from this gesture made his heart race as if each beat carried profound happiness. At that moment, a gentle smile slowly appeared on his lips, reflecting deep happiness. Each spoonful of porridge, though simple, became a vivid expression of her sincere affection. He wished time could stand still so he could savour this warmth and tranquillity forever.

After he finished the bowl of porridge, she quickly retrieved the medication and warm water she had prepared for him. She moved without haste, each action reflecting her meticulous attention and deep concern. As she handed him the medicine and water, her voice remained gentle and soothing, like a calming wave easing away any tiredness. Once he took the medicine, she gently helped him lie back down, carefully arranging the blanket to ensure he was as comfortable as possible.

When she stood up and prepared to return to the kitchen, a gentle surprise made her startle—he grasped her wrist. The unexpected touch caused her to look down instinctively. Her eyes met his sincere gaze, his eyes shimmering with emotion, full of gratitude and deep affection. His gaze was like a warm light in the darkness, illuminating the delicate connection between them.

“Gomawo, Sussaem,” he said, his warm voice spreading like a comforting wave, soothing the worries and nervousness in her heart. Each word of his was filled with sincerity, softening her tension and making her heart feel lighter.

She smiled, her smile gentle and warm. “Gwaenchanha. Just get some more sleep, you need to rest” she replied, her voice as soothing as the concern in her eyes. As she smiled, her face softened even more.

She gently took hold of the hand gripping her wrist and bent down, her gesture tender as she carefully placed his hand back on his chest. She adjusted the blanket, ensuring that every part of him was covered carefully to keep him warm.

After finishing her care for him, she stood up and went to the kitchen. She opened the pot, ladled the remaining porridge into a container, then carefully sealed it and placed it in the refrigerator to ensure the porridge would not spoil.

When all the cleaning was done, she looked up at the wall clock. It clearly showed that it was already past 8 PM. A sudden wave of anxiety washed over her as she realized how quickly time had passed without her noticing. She frowned, a jolt of shock sweeping through her mind as she understood how late it had become.

She decided to check on Kim Sa Bu one last time before leaving. When her hand touched his forehead, she felt that his temperature had risen since the last time she checked. Her heart tightened, and a wave of anxiety surged within her.

She knew she shouldn't be this way, but her anxiety wouldn't let her leave Kim Sa Bu at this moment. Even though she understood that the doctors at Doldam were skilled and could help him, she couldn't feel at ease and would constantly worry about his condition.

Her rational mind knew that staying was unnecessary and that not going to meet Sung Min now could affect their relationship. But her emotions were stronger than her reason. Her heart ached with worry and care.

After a moment of internal struggle, the heavy feeling in her heart made it impossible for her to hesitate any longer. She hurriedly dialled Sung Min's number, each second feeling like an eternity. When the ringing finally ended, his warm voice came through the phone, full of anticipation.

"Sung Min, it's me," she said, trying to keep her voice steady but unable to hide the worry in her tone.

"Are you on your way? Everything okay?" His voice was warm and expectant, making the heavy weight in her chest feel even more burdensome.

"Yeah, I was about to leave," she sighed, feeling like an immovable weight was pressing on her chest. "But Kim Sa Bu has a fever. They said he didn't go to work today. I was worried something might happen to him, so I decided to stop by his house. Earlier, his fever went down, but now it's back again. I'm afraid he might have a serious issue, so I want to stay and monitor his condition. If it gets worse, I'll have to take him back to Doldam."

There was a brief silence from Sung Min as if he was carefully considering the situation. Then, his voice was warm and calm, "I understand. Don't worry too much. I’m okay."

"I'm sorry, Sung Min," she said softly, feeling a deep sense of guilt and worry. "I'll make it up to you."

"It's okay," he replied, trying to keep his voice cheerful and hide his disappointment.

Myung Sim felt grateful for Sung Min's understanding. Her heart felt somewhat relieved not to be blamed, but the feeling of guilt still lingered. "Thank you, Sung Min. I promise I'll see you as soon as I can."

"It's alright, you take care of him. But you also need to look after yourself and not overexert yourself. If anything goes wrong, call me. See you tomorrow, my angel." Sung Min reminded her, with a clear note of concern in his voice.

She ended the call, feeling partly relieved that Sung Min hadn't blamed her, but the guilt and worry still weighed heavily on her heart. She returned to Kim Sa Bu, her gaze focused and her concern for his health visible on her face.

In the elegant restaurant, Sung Min sat quietly amid the romantic atmosphere, but his heart was heavy with sadness. In front of him lay an open ring box, inside of which was a sparkling diamond ring, reflecting the warm, golden light of the restaurant. The gleam of the diamond seemed to symbolize the dreams and hopes he had placed on this night. Beside the ring box was a large bouquet of red roses, their petals vibrant with the intense love he had for Myung Sim, but now they only served as a symbol of solitude and gloom.

He looked around and saw other couples enjoying their dinner, chatting cheerfully with one another. The soft, soothing music from the piano blended with the whispers of the diners. The warm and mellow notes created a romantic atmosphere, yet it only served to highlight Myung Sim's absence.

Sung Min’s gaze fixed on the empty chair across from him, and a wave of loneliness washed over him. He had envisioned the perfect scene of Myung Sim sitting there, her radiant smile lighting up the moment as he presented the ring and proposed. But now, that dream was nothing more than a void and empty.

Sung Min took a deep breath and sighed. He looked out the window, where the starry night sky stretched like a tranquil painting. He sipped his red wine, feeling the astringent taste spread across his tongue, blending with the sadness in his heart. The taste of the wine seemed to accentuate the overwhelming sense of disappointment enveloping him.

Even though he tried to maintain a smile, the fatigue and sadness in his heart were impossible to conceal. His gaze wandered off into the distance, and memories of Myung Sim filled his mind—her smile when she first agreed to be his girlfriend, her voice, and those sweet moments now made his heart ache even more profound.

A young couple at the table next to him was laughing and talking joyfully, their eyes glowing with happiness as they looked at each other. Watching them, Sung Min felt a deep sadness. Partly out of regret and partly from the stark realization that his love for Myung Sim hadn't been enough to capture her heart completely. Her heart had ultimately recognized its true feelings and made a choice.

Despite this, Sung Min told himself that he always wished for Myung Sim’s happiness, even if it meant he would no longer be part of her future. He carefully closed the ring box, feeling as if he had finally found the answer he had been seeking. In the dim light of the restaurant, he sat alone, but in his heart, he was ready to move forward on a new path. He smiled gently, with a touch of bittersweetness, knowing that he had ultimately lost.

Chapter 13: Heart’s Choice – The Breakfast

Chapter Text

The next morning, Kim Sa Bu woke up, feeling less feverish and exhausted. He blinked a few times to adjust to the soft morning light streaming through the window. The room was bathed in a gentle glow, making everything seem more peaceful. As he attempted to sit up, he noticed someone resting their head on the sofa, leaning against his blanket.

He looked down and saw Myung Sim sitting on the floor, her head resting against the sofa, facing him as she slept. She seemed tired, but her expression was incredibly serene as if sleep had brought her peace after a long night of taking care of him.

A warm feeling filled his heart as he realized Myung Sim had stayed the entire night to take care of him. He gently tucked the strands of hair covering her face behind her ear, gazing at her with tender eyes.

Every sound in the room seemed to pause, leaving only her steady breathing. Kim Sa Bu felt incredibly fortunate to have her by his side; her presence was like a steadfast pillar of support and a source of strength that helped him overcome all obstacles. He smiled gently, filled with gratitude and hope, wishing that every morning he woke up, he could see her beside him.

His movement caused Myung Sim to stir awake. She opened her eyes, looked up at him, and smiled, asking, "You're awake already?"

Still half-asleep, she instinctively reached out to touch his forehead to check his temperature. Feeling that his skin had cooled down made her visibly relieved. "You've broken the fever," she said, her voice full of relief and joy.

Kim Sa Bu looked at her with grateful eyes. “Thank you for staying,” he said, his voice warm.

She smiled gently. "You had another fever last night. I couldn’t leave you alone, so I decided to stay. You should take another day off."

He sat up, leaning back against the sofa, his eyes full of gratitude. "It's okay, I've stopped having a fever. I feel much better now. Gomawo, Sussaem."

She smiled, "Alright, but you mustn't overexert yourself. If you do, I'll make sure you end up in the hospital room."

He chuckled at her stern expression. "Algesseo."

She smiled back and said, “There’s some porridge left. Let me reheat it for you.” With a gentle and thoughtful demeanour, Myung Sim stood up and walked into the kitchen. Meanwhile, Kim Sa Bu tidied up the sofa, folded the blanket neatly, and brought it back to the room. He changed his clothes, feeling healthier and more refreshed than the previous day.

As Myung Sim reheated the porridge, Kim Sa Bu sat at the small table outside the kitchen, quietly observing her every move. The aroma from the pot of porridge filled the room making him feel hungry. When Myung Sim brought out the steaming porridge and a cup of warm water, she carefully placed them in front of him with a warm smile. He deeply appreciative of her thoughtfulness

She asked if she could use the bathroom, and he nodded. "There’s a new set of toothbrushes and towels in the bathroom that I haven’t used yet. They’re on the left side of the sink."

She smiled and said, “Gomawo, Kim Sa Bu.”

While he had breakfast, she took the opportunity to shower and freshen up. The previous day had been long for her, but Kim Sa Bu’s improved health gave her a sense of relief. The cool water cascading over her skin washed away her fatigue, soothing her worries and stress. She closed her eyes, letting the water cleanse her mind as she reflected on the events of the previous night and the emotions flooding her heart.

When Myung Sim stepped out of the bathroom, she felt refreshed both mentally and physically from the cool water. Even though she was wearing the same clothes from the day before, a sense of comfort spread through her. As she walked down the small hallway leading to the living room, she paused for a moment and took a deep breath. A familiar and pleasant aroma wafted to her nose—the sweet and warm scent of freshly brewed coffee. The coffee aroma, combined with the morning sunlight streaming through the windows, made the small living room feel serene and inviting.

She entered the living room, and the first sight that greeted her was Kim Sa Bu standing by the sink in the kitchen, diligently scrubbing the used dishes. He wore a familiar white t-shirt, giving off a sense of comfort and approachability.

The gentle sound of running water from the sink blended with his soft scrubbing, creating a soothing and pleasant melody. Myung Sim's footsteps on the wooden floor added to the tranquil atmosphere, each step delicate and soft, like notes in a morning symphony.

When Kim Sa Bu turned around, his eyes glowed with satisfaction and tenderness as he looked at her. The gentle smile on his lips was a part of the early morning ambience, like a small reward for his devoted care.

With a warm and gentle voice, Kim Sa Bu said, “I’ve made breakfast for you. Please, have a seat.” His words came with a sense of care and tenderness.

On the small table where he had just had breakfast, a steaming cup of coffee awaited her. Next to the coffee was a neatly and elegantly arranged plate of food, featuring golden fried eggs and fragrant grilled sausages. The dishes were simply yet tastefully presented, with each detail meticulously attended to. Every item was not just a source of nourishment but also carried the genuine care of Kim Sa Bu.

As Myung Sim approached, her eyes were immediately drawn to the meticulously prepared breakfast. She sat down, her gaze showing both delight and appreciation. Sa Bu smiled, his eyes reflecting satisfaction and tenderness, as a way to show his care and respect for her.

Myung Sim said with gratitude, “It looks delicious. Gomawo,” and her smile was a heartfelt response to his care.

Kim Sa Bu stepped out of the kitchen, wiping his hands on a nearby towel, leaving a warm mark on it. He sat down across from Myung Sim, his eyes filled with sincerity and tenderness. “You took care of me all day yesterday, so I had to do something to give back,” he said, his voice warm and genuine, bringing a sense of reassurance and warmth.

Myung Sim began to enjoy the breakfast Kim Sa Bu had prepared, her face lit up with joy and satisfaction. Seeing her happiness brought a deep sense of contentment to Sa Bu. For him, this breakfast was not just a meal but a reflection of the care and affection he had for her. It was a warm and happy moment, one that he hadn't experienced in a long time.

Myung Sim took a sip of coffee, savouring the rich and warm flavour that spread across her tongue. The gentle aroma of the coffee blended with the morning's fresh scent, making her smile. An indescribable joy surged within her, like a warm light shining into her heart.

Kim Sa Bu's care and attention had turned this morning into a special and meaningful moment. Every small action of his reflected deep sincerity and affection, making this morning stand out from the rest.

In this moment of stillness, everything around seemed to pause, giving way to a profound sense of peace and happiness within both of them. The gentle morning light streamed through the window, creating a warm and soothing atmosphere. The chirping of birds outside blended with the soft clinking of coffee cups, harmonizing with the tranquillity of the room.

Even without exchanging words, the connection between Myung Sim and Kim Sa Bu became clearer and deeper than ever. Each glance and smile carried sincere emotions and mutual understanding. They felt a harmonious alignment in their souls, a natural fusion that needed no verbal expression.

Both silently wished that this moment could last forever, allowing them to revel in the warmth and simplicity that only existed between the two of them. At this moment, all worries and tensions dissolved, giving way to profound tranquillity and happiness. They felt the warmth from these simple moments, like a small haven amidst the vast world, where only love and deep care were present in every gesture and glance.

Chapter 14: Heart’s Choice – The Decision

Chapter Text

After enjoying breakfast, Myung Sim and Kim Sa Bu decided to go to Doldam together. The sky today was clear and cloudless, creating an unusually peaceful and bright scene. The morning sunlight gently filtered through the lush green leaves, illuminating the small path they were walking on. The surroundings seemed to be bathed in a warm, highlighting the natural beauty of the area.

The cheerful chirping of birds from the bushes along the path blended with the rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze, creating a natural and soothing symphony. This sound, combined with the rhythmic footsteps on the trail, created a relaxing melody, making each step feel light and joyful.

This path was no stranger to them; it held old memories, with every pebble and blade of grass evoking days gone by. Under the brilliant golden sunlight, Myung Sim felt a sense of relaxation and tranquillity with each step she took. The cool breeze carried the gentle scent of wild grass, making her spirit feel lighter and more at ease.

They walked slowly along the familiar path, savouring each moment of peace bestowed by nature. They didn't need to speak much, the small, seemingly inconsequential conversations brought warmth and a deep connection between their souls. These conversations held empathy and understanding that sometimes words could not fully express.

The path that usually felt long and distant now seemed shorter than ever. Each step was filled with lightness and relaxation as if time had momentarily stopped so they could savour every moment together. However, before they could fully soak in the beauty and tranquillity of this moment, they found themselves standing in front of Doldam.

Standing in front of Doldam, despite knowing they would meet again soon, a profound sense of wistfulness and vague sadness was evident on both their faces. The atmosphere around them seemed to grow heavier, and the exchanged glances conveyed an indescribable feeling. Their eyes brought back memories of the day when Doldam had suspected MERS patients. Their eyes held unspoken words deep within their hearts—words they wanted to say but lacked the courage to express.

They stood close together, their hands seeming to seek a way to touch each other, but hesitatingly reaching out only to pull back again. Regret was visible in their eyes reflecting deep empathy and a hint of sadness that was hard to conceal. Though they couldn't articulate their feelings in words, their smiles carried all the unspoken emotions. The smiles were gentle tinged with a touch of melancholy, as if trying to encapsulate all the emotions of the moment into a simple expression.

“Myung Sim!” Sung Min walked up to Myung Sim, causing both Myung Sim and Kim Sa Bu to turn around in surprise. He appeared unexpectedly from behind, his eyes bright and his face as cheerful as ever, breaking the moment between the two.

Myung Sim was momentarily surprised but quickly returned a smile. “Sung Min, when did you get here?” she asked her tone a mix of surprise.

Sung Min moved closer, his gaze settling on Myung Sim with familiar warmth. He smiled and gently replied, “I just came.”

Kim Sa Bu looked at Sung Min, his gaze shifting back to Myung Sim, his face briefly showing a hint of sadness. “Good morning,” he said, trying to mask his emotions, his tone polite but tinged with a touch of awkwardness.

Sung Min nodded back with a smile, “Good morning. I heard you were sick. Are you feeling better now?”

Kim Sa Bu smiled, though his smile was somewhat forced. “I’m feeling better now. Thank you. You two go ahead, I’ll head in first. Goodbye.” He said, quickly walking into Doldam, leaving Myung Sim standing there with a sense of indescribable emptiness.

Myung Sim watched Kim Sa Bu walk into Doldam, the final look he gave her felt like a thousand knives stabbing her heart.

Sung Min noticed Myung Sim's expression and gently approached her, placing a soft kiss on her cheek as a habitual gesture of affection. "Are you okay?" he asked.

Myung Sim shook her head slightly, trying to maintain a smile. “Nothing. I’m just a little tired. I’m sorry for missing our anniversary.”

Sung Min smiled, taking her hand and feeling the chill from her palm. “You don’t need to apologize,” he said gently but firmly. “I love you for the care and concern you give for everyone.”

At this moment, Myung Sim felt a sense of peace filling her heart. The warmth of Sung Min’s hand and his sincere words made her feel reassured as if all her worries and doubts were temporarily set aside.

However, this peace was only a part of the complex emotions she was experiencing. As she looked into Sung Min’s caring eyes, she also realized she was standing at a crossroads of conflicting feelings. The choices before her were like branching paths, each leading to different emotional outcomes.

She felt lost and confused, unsure of which direction to take. These choices were not just decisions about the future but also deep questions about her feelings and her relationships with those around her. Each path led to different consequences, and the fear of making the wrong choice left her feeling ambiguous and uncertain.

"I will make it up to you," Myung Sim said, her voice gentle but resolute as if making a promise. Her eyes shimmered with anxiety, and her smile, though small, carried deep meaning.

Sung Min raised an eyebrow, his eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief as he looked at her. "So, how about now?" he asked, his tone filled with anticipation and a touch of mystery. He was excited about the surprise he had prepared for her.

Myung Sim looked surprised, tilting her head and widening her eyes in curiosity. “Now?” she asked, unable to hide the mix of astonishment and intrigue in her voice.

Sung Min nodded, his smile widening. “It won’t take long,” he reassured her, maintaining his mysterious tone.

Myung Sim wrinkled her nose slightly, her eyes full of curiosity and a hint of suspicion.

She nodded in agreement, though with a lingering sense of unease. Quickly, she called Nurse Park to let him know she would be arriving a bit late, her mind buzzing with curiosity about what Sung Min had prepared for her.

“Alright, I’ll go with you,” Myung Sim said, her smile returning as she looked into Sung Min’s determined eyes.

Sung Min smiled as he gently took her hand and they began to walk. He opened the car door for Myung Sim, and his radiant smile made her feel at ease and comfortable. The car drove along a tree-lined road, with the fresh and cool morning air filling the space. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting shimmering streaks of light on the road. Sung Min drove calmly, his eyes focused on the road ahead, but he occasionally glanced at Myung Sim to check if she was comfortable.

They drove through the quiet streets of the small village, where red-brick houses and charming little shops stood close together.

After a short drive, Sung Min stopped the car in front of a quaint café located on the corner of the street. The café had a classic appearance with large glass windows and a sun-shaded awning. Small, charming flower baskets hung from above, adding vibrant colours. The handwritten sign reading "Happy Café" made the place feel even more welcoming and cosy.

Myung Sim stepped out of the car and looked around the café. “This place looks so cosy,” she remarked, feeling the gentle and pleasant atmosphere of the place.

Sung Min nodded and led her inside. The café’s interior was decorated with wooden furnishings and hanging lights, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Soft jazz music played in the background, blending with the aroma of freshly ground coffee that filled the space.

Sung Min chose a table next to the large window, where they could gaze out at the peaceful street outside. “I thought you might like this spot,” he said, his eyes meeting Myung Sim’s with anticipation and she smiled back.

Myung Sim looked around the café with curiosity. The warm wooden tables were simply but elegantly arranged. Each table was adorned with a small vase of brightly coloured wildflowers. Framed wall art, capturing the joyful moments of previous guests, contributed to a cosy and welcoming atmosphere.

She turned to Sung Min, who was sitting across from her with a gentle smile. He had somehow managed to order two cups of hot coffee, which were now emitting a delightful aroma and creating a thin veil of steam in the air.

“Is a cup of coffee all you want me to make up for you?” she asked, her tone playful yet carrying a sense of gratitude in every word. Myung Sim lifted her coffee cup, savouring the rich aroma before taking a small sip.

Sung Min only smiled, saying nothing, but his gaze held something deeper. He didn’t rush to respond, instead slowly pulling out a red velvet box from his coat pocket. He placed the box carefully in front of Myung Sim, looking at her with affectionate eyes, and said, “A gift for you. I hope you like it.”

Myung Sim stared intently at the box, her heart pounding erratically. The thought that Sung Min might be proposing made her anxious, and she hesitated, not daring to open it right away. The suspense made her bite her lower lip lightly, and her hand trembled slightly as she touched the smooth velvet surface of the box.

Sung Min noticed the confusion visible on Myung Sim's face. He smiled gently and said softly, "Aren't you going to open it? Let me help you"

With a slow motion, Sung Min opened the box. Myung Sim watched his every move with bated breath, her heart beating. As the box opened, the light reflected off the necklace inside sparkled, making her sigh with relief. A smile spread across her face, a mix of joy and reassurance. 'Thank you, I really like it,' she said, her tone gentle and sincere."

Sung Min also smiled, but there was a gentle sadness in his eyes that he couldn't hide. "Seeing that it's not a ring, are you relieved?" he asked, trying to maintain a cheerful tone.

She picked up the necklace, gently caressing it, and smiled softly. "You’ve seen right through me again," she admitted.

He smiled, but his eyes revealed a deep-seated disappointment. "Actually, last night, the box did contain a ring," Sung Min confessed. "I had prepared to propose to you. But seeing your reaction, I knew I made the right decision."

Myung Sim looked at him, sensing the sincerity in his words. "Can I know the reason behind your final decision?" she asked, her voice carrying a note of curiosity.

He looked straight into her eyes, not shying away. "I'm going back to Seoul," Sung Min said calmly. "The top law firm in Seoul that I’ve mentioned before has finally reached out, offering me a position. I wanted to propose to you and have you come to Seoul with me."

Myung Sim nodded, contemplating what Sung Min had just said. “So, are you afraid that I might not agree?” she asked, her tone softer.

Sung Min shook his head, his eyes full of determination. “I’m not afraid. I know that if I propose to you, you’ll say yes and come to Seoul with me.”

She looked at him intently, trying to understand his deeper thoughts. "If you know that, why did you change your decision?" she asked, her tone tinged with surprise.

He sighed, his eyes softening. "Because I know you wouldn't want to leave this place. Even if you decide to go with me, you won't be truly happy. I don't want to see that. Besides, I realize that I've been thinking more about my future."

Myung Sim nodded, her eyes reflecting understanding. "So, your future doesn't include me?" she asked, her tone gentle but unable to hide a hint of regret.

Sung Min lowered his head, his voice becoming sombre. "I'm sorry."

Myung Sim smiled, trying to lighten the mood. "I was just kidding. Have you decided on your future yet? When are you leaving?" she asked, her tone cheerful again.

Sung Min nodded, his eyes shining with determination. "I'm leaving next week. I plan to strive to become a judge shortly."

She looked at him in surprise, admiring his big decision. "A judge?" she asked, her eyes wide with astonishment.

He nodded, his voice becoming more confident. "Initially, I just wanted to be an ordinary lawyer. I didn't want to fight much, so I came here. And here, I met you, which made me want to stay even more. But after being here for a while and often visiting Doldam, I realized that there's still a lot of injustice in the law. The poor and the weak are still oppressed by the rich and powerful, unable to fight back. To help them, I need more than knowledge; I need more power. That's why I want to become a judge. So when I got that call, I felt very happy. At that moment, I forgot to think of you. I'm sorry."

Myung Sim smiled, feeling Sung Min's sincerity and determination. "I also want to apologize to you. I had thought about marrying you, and I was eagerly waiting for you to propose. But at that moment when I saw the box, I was scared and worried. I wondered whether I should say yes or no if you really proposed. It wasn't until now that I realized I wasn't ready yet. It turns out we are both in the same," she admitted, her voice carrying a sense of relief.

Sung Min smiled, but there was a hint of bitterness. "We're completely different. I never included you in my future plans because I don't have the confidence to become the person you hoped. There's always been an image of someone in your heart, and even when you try to push it away, that person has always been present in it," he said, his voice full of understanding and regret.

As she heard him speak, Myung Sim felt her nose start to sting, her eyes redden, and tears begin to fall. Sung Min smiled warmly, moving closer to her and using his thumb to wipe away the tear from her cheek. His gentle gesture made her smile.

"Don’t cry," he said, his voice gentle and warm. Then, he took her hand and placed it over her heart. "Close your eyes and feel with your heart. Listen to it. You can lie to yourself, but your eyes and your heart cannot lie."

She looked at him, feeling the comfort and sincerity from him. "So, no matter what, we can still be good friends, right?" she asked, her voice carrying a note of hope.

He said, "Why not? Even though our futures may no longer be intertwined, you will always be my angel."

She smiled, feeling a sense of peace. "Thank you," she said, her voice filled with deep gratitude.

Chapter 15: The New Chapter

Notes:

Finally, I’ve reached the last chapter!
I regretted the scene where the two were sitting behind Doldam when Sussaem learned about Director Yeo's news. That’s why I wrote this final scene like this.
I also planned to write a kiss scene, but in such a beautiful and peaceful moment like this, I think holding hands and sitting together is more perfect.
So, I’ll save the kiss scene for another fanfic. Haha!

Enjoy!

Chapter Text

After returning to Doldam, although everything had been resolved, Myung Sim's mood remained heavy, an invisible weight pressing down on her heart. Everyone around sensed that something was wrong, but no one dared to approach to inquire. The atmosphere was thick with tension, leaving only worried glances and hushed whispers.

Meanwhile, after returning Myung Sim to Doldam, Sung Min sought out Kim Sa Bu. The small office of Kim Sa Bu was quiet, with the two of them sitting opposite each other. On the table, two cups of steaming coffee emitted a gentle mist, their warm aroma filling the room, providing a comforting presence in the sombre atmosphere.

Sung Min was the first to speak, breaking the heavy silence between them. "Next week, I'll be returning to Seoul," he said, his voice calm but unable to hide the deep sadness in his eyes.

Kim Sa Bu looked surprised, setting his coffee cup down on the table and gazing at Sung Min with a probing expression. "Have you told her?" he asked, concern evident in his voice.

Sung Min nodded, responding with a wistful smile. "I told her earlier," he admitted, his voice soft but heavy with emotion.

Kim Sa Bu asked with curiosity and underlying concern, "So, will she be coming to Seoul with you?"

Sung Min shook his head, his smile still on his lips but his eyes heavy with sadness. "No, she isn’t coming with me. We’ve broken up," he said.

Kim Sa Bu was taken aback by the news, nearly dropping his coffee cup. "Mwo?" he exclaimed, his face showing clear signs of shock and concern. Sung Min chuckled softly at Kim Sa Bu's reaction.

“Is it because she missed her date with you yesterday because she had to take care of me? Please don’t misunderstand, it’s just that I had a high fever last night, so she…” Kim Sa Bu anxiously explained, fearing that Sung Min might misunderstand her.

Sung Min raised his hand, signalling that no need to explain. "You don’t need to explain. I understand. The decision I made was my own, not because of her. It was my choice to prioritize my career," he said, his tone sincere and clear, his gaze resolute as if to affirm it.

Kim Sa Bu sighed, his eyes filled with regret. "Since I’ve known her, it’s been a long time since she opened her heart to anyone. I never expected that this time she would have broken up. You were truly a good man," he said, feeling a mix of happiness and sadness as he thought about Myung Sim and the pain she would endure.

Sung Min sighed, his face showing a hint of sadness. "Honestly, no matter how many times she has loved or how good the person is, it’s pointless because there has always been the image of the man she loves in her heart, even if she hasn’t realized it," he confessed, his voice carrying a mix of heartbreak and sincerity as if acknowledging it to himself.

Kim Sa Bu pondered for a moment, reflecting on Sung Min's words, and then asked, "What if she never realizes it for the rest of her life?"

Sung Min smiled softly, looking directly into Kim Sa Bu's eyes. "If the two of you continue to be together, one day she will realize it. But for now, I believe she has already realised it."

Kim Sa Bu smiled, his eyes sparkling with trust and hope. Sung Min's words seemed to awaken something within him.

Sung Min looked at Kim Sa Bu and said, "It seems this cup of coffee doesn’t belong to me. It suits you better. Cherish it and don’t let regret come only after you’ve lost it," his tone warm and sincere, as if delivering a heartfelt message.

After that, Sung Min stood up and bid farewell to Kim Sa Bu. "Good luck to you. But don’t get too full of yourself—if you don’t cherish this cup of coffee, I’ll come back and take it. I won’t give up again," he said, his tone playful with a hint of warning. He then left, leaving Sa Bu with his thoughts swirling around the words he had just heard.

Kim Sa Bu chuckled, catching the underlying meaning in Sung Min’s words. In his heart, he silently thanked Sung Min for everything, realizing that he had been given a chance more precious than anything. Those words were not just advice but also a form of encouragement, a chance for him to move forward and pursue his own heart.

After finishing two intense surgeries, Myung Sim felt utterly exhausted, not just physically but emotionally as well. The stressful and demanding hours from work had left a heavy mark on her mind. She informed the nurses at the station that she needed to step outside for some fresh air and requested them to call her if any new surgeries came in.

Leaving the hospital grounds, she walked in the warm golden light of the sunset. The sky began to shift from blue to shades of red and orange, blending with the warm yellow of the setting sun. The surroundings were bathed in the gentle glow of twilight, and Myung Sim was drifting alone in this quiet space.

After a few laps around the hospital, Myung Sim stopped at a familiar spot— behind the hospital where she often came to find a moment of peace for her soul. This place had witnessed many of her moments, and today was no exception. She sat down, feeling the comforting solidity of the circular stone bench beneath her tired body, and began to gaze out at the river before her.

The river now resembled a vast mirror, reflecting the shimmering sunlight and creating an ethereal beauty. The afternoon sun casts a sparkling light upon the water, making it glisten like precious gems. The fiery red of the sunset gradually descended, warming the surroundings with a romantic glow. The sky shifted from orange to purple, blending with the river’s colours, forming a breathtakingly beautiful and serene scene.

Myung Sim took a deep breath, savouring the fresh, cool air. Despite the calming beauty of the sunset before her, her mind remained tangled in confusion and uncertainty. The serene view of the twilight offered a momentary escape from her thoughts, but her mood remained heavy and unsettled.

At the same time, Kim Sa Bu was lost in his thoughts. He wandered around the hospital, his steps seemingly guided by an invisible force. His path led him to a place where he found solace and tranquillity—behind the hospital.

His gaze fell upon Myung Sim sitting silently on the circular stone bench. He saw her with her head bowed, her shoulders appearing weary as if the burdens of work and emotions had gathered here. The sunset reflected on her face, creating a gentle yet sorrowful beauty.

Kim Sa Bu smiled gently, his eyes reflecting concern and kindness. Seeing Myung Sim sitting alone, her face showing exhaustion and sadness, he decided that a cup of coffee might make her feel better. He thought that this simple coffee might bring a bit of warmth and relaxation to her at this moment.

He returned to his office, carefully preparing a hot cup of coffee. After finishing, he held the coffee cup in his hand, stepping out of the office with each step light and a smile still on his face. Kim Sa Bu quietly approached Myung Sim.

As he approached, he spoke in a gentle tone, "Coffee?" His words served as a warm greeting, perfectly complementing the tranquil atmosphere of the afternoon.

Myung Sim was startled and turned around, her eyes meeting Kim Sa Bu’s eyes. In front of her was his gentle smile and the cup of coffee, a bright spot in the darkening space. The sunset illuminated his face, highlighting the warmth and concern in his eyes as if each ray of light was sending her a message of comfort.

She let out a relieved laugh upon seeing Kim Sa Bu. “Gomawo,” she said, accepting the cup of coffee from him. The warmth from the cup spread to her hands, and the aroma permeated the surrounding air, bringing a sense of relaxation and tranquillity. She took a deep breath, allowing the comforting warmth of the coffee to fill her heart.

Kim Sa Bu sat down next to her, maintaining a close but gentle distance. His eyes also looked toward the sunset, seemingly sharing the tranquillity of the moment. "Sung Min came to see me," he broke the silence, his voice warm and unhurried.

Myung Sim didn't turn to look at him immediately. She clutched the coffee cup a little tighter as if needing a moment to sort out her thoughts and feelings. "I've finally realised it," she admitted, her voice carrying a tone of sincerity and resolve.

Kim Sa Bu smiled gently, his face reflecting understanding and empathy. "I know," he said, without needing to elaborate further.

Myung Sim turned to look at him with surprise. "You understand what I'm saying?" She couldn't hide the astonishment and curiosity in her eyes.

He looked deeply into her eyes. "In your heart, there has been the image of someone for a long time. You’ve tried to push it away, but that person has always been present in your heart. You just didn’t realize it. Now, you’ve finally realised it.”

She looked deep into Kim Sa Bu's eyes, her gaze filled with emotion and anxiety. Her voice was gentle and sincere as if each word had been carefully chosen. "What if I never realize it?" Her question was not only a reflection of her current doubts but also a concern for the future, an uncertainty about what might unfold.

Kim Sa Bu's voice is steady and confident. "If we continue to be together, one day you will realize it." His words were like a promise, a commitment that time and his presence would help her find the clarity she was seeking.

She smiled gently, feeling the sincerity in his words. "It’s today." Her voice carried a profound significance as if today was not just an ordinary day but a decisive one, a day when all her feelings and thoughts had become clear.

Kim Sa Bu nodded, his eyes gleaming with certainty and contentment. "Ne, it's today." His affirmation not only reflected his agreement with her but also demonstrated his determination to build a future together.

This moment, bathed in the warm glow of the sunset, stands as a testament to the deep connection between them.

She looked at Kim Sa Bu, her eyes filled with deep emotion. Her voice was somewhat choked, filled with worry and sincerity. “But I… still have some concerns.” Her words felt like a confession of the deep-seated uncertainty she held within.

Kim Sa Bu looked at her, a soft smile on his lips. “What are you still concerned about?” he asked with sincere care, wanting to understand more about the worries she was experiencing.

She hesitated as if searching for the right words to convey her feelings. “You’re different from the people who have come into my life before. When I broke up with them, I could be resolute and decisive. But with you, if we were to start and then break up, I know I wouldn’t be able to be decisive like that,” her voice grew deeper, filled with worry and fear. “I know that by then, even our compatible colleagues and long-time friendships would be gone. I truly can’t take that risk.”

Kim Sa Bu's gaze remained fixed on her, his expression showing both understanding and determination. “After going through this,” he said with a convincing and sincere tone, “when I realize how much I need you, how much I love you, I promise myself that I won’t let you go again.” His voice was firm and unwavering. “If you can’t be decisive to let me go, neither I. So, what are we still concerned about?”

His response was a strong commitment, reflecting the seriousness and sincerity of his feelings. He not only acknowledged her worries but also affirmed that he, too, did not want to lose her. His words provided both comfort and persuasion, serving as a promise that they would face their fears and risks together, not just for love but also for their deep bond and mutual understanding.

Kim Sa Bu looked back towards the sunset, his gaze was calm yet filled with happiness. Myung Sim followed, turning to face the stunning scenery before them as if they were gazing into their future. At this moment, both felt a sense of relief, having finally expressed everything they had kept inside.

In this moment of tranquillity, it felt as though the world around them had quieted, leaving only them and the golden sunset. Myung Sim's heart was filled with joy and emotion. Though there were many things she wanted to say, they seemed unnecessary, for their genuine feelings were conveyed through a meaningful silence—a silent thread connecting their two hearts. She felt a sense of lightness as if all burdens had been lifted, making way for happiness and peace.

Kim Sa Bu sat closer to her, gently reaching out to take the coffee cup from Myung Sim and set it aside. His movements were slow and deliberate, as if afraid that any haste might break the serene moment.

He reached for her hand, his touch gentle and tentative, as if afraid to startle her. As his fingers made contact with her palm, he felt the softness and warmth travel to the tips of his fingers. He held her hand firmly, a grasp full of meaning and resolve as if to affirm that he would never let her go.

Myung Sim felt the warmth spreading from his hand, like a flow of safety and love enveloping her. She looked down at their intertwined hands, sensing an unbreakable connection. Joy sparkled in her eyes, and a gentle smile spread across her lips, reflecting her complete satisfaction and happiness.

Myung Sim gently rested her head on Kim Sa Bu's shoulder, a tender and affectionate gesture as if seeking a solid anchor amidst life's storms. The softness and warmth from his shoulder seemed to dissolve all her worries. The familiar scent from him surrounded her, bringing a sense of tranquillity as if all her troubles and exhaustion had been swept away by his presence.

In this moment, silence envelops them, yet it is profoundly meaningful. No words are needed; the closeness and the harmony in their hearts are enough for them to feel the deep love and unbreakable connection between them.

Under the golden-hued sunset, the surroundings become tranquil and romantic. The orange-yellow light of the sunset reflects off the river, creating a beautiful scene that highlights the blend between them and nature. Despite the chilly autumn breeze, their hearts are filled with warmth and hope for a happy future.

These precious moments are fully enjoyed. Sitting beside each other, without needing more words, they understand that from this moment on, they can truly be together. They know they are stepping into a new chapter of their lives, one filled with hope and love.
