Chapter Text

The sun bore down on my skin, I was sweating profusely while my peripherals went blurry. I looked around at the field, people were smiling and cheering for me. I had won. I smiled widely and waved at everyone, and jumped for joy. My body was exhausted, but I had one. I turned to my best friend and hugged her tightly. She reciprocated… but something about it felt sour.

Iris and Sable were curled up in bed, the room quiet and peaceful. The sun hadn’t come up yet, all that could be heard was Sable’s cat, Angel, quietly wandering the apartment. Angel was investigating cabinets when he jumped in surprise at the sound of Iris’ alarm going off.

Sable groaned and shoved Iris to wake her up. “Dashie.” Sable muttered to no response. She shoved her lover a little harder, “Dashie!” she said a little louder. Eventually Sable sat up and shook Iris roughly. Finally the taller woman stirred as her eyelids slowly opened, sleep still pulling at them.

“If you’re not going to wake up to your alarm, don’t set it.” Sable sleepily stated. She had told Iris this many times, but their mornings were always the same. Sable never stayed irritated for long, hence why it stayed that way.

Iris sat up, pitching an elbow into the mattress to hold herself up, she placed her other hand on the back of Sable’s head, pulling her in to give her a forehead kiss. Iris gumbled incoherently for a second before finally forming words, “I love you too.” She reached over and turned off her alarm before swinging her legs off the side of her bed, sitting up fully. Iris rubbed her eyes before she felt a soft kiss land on her cheek before the smaller woman curled back up into blankets. Iris smiled and kissed Sable’s cheek in return and moved some of her pink hair out of her face.

“I’ll be right back.”

“I know.”

Iris got up and changed into proper jogging clothes. She left the house, the cold early morning air nipping at her nose, waking her fully. She set off on her morning run. The lanky woman ran a couple miles before jogging to a local bakery. A bell jingled as she opened the door to the establishment.

“Mornin’ Rainbow!” A short, pudgy young woman cheerfully called, “The usual?” Through heavy breaths and wiping her face of sweat, Iris nodded, “You know it, Pinkie.”

“How many miles today?” The young baker asked preparing Iris’ and Sable’s breakfast.

“Just two, Sofie.” Iris rubbed her eyes, she had thought the morning air woke her up but her eyelids still weighed down with sleepiness.

“Track and Field got you fatigued?”

“Un poquito.” Iris chuckled. Sofia giggled back, setting a bag full of breakfast pastries on the counter then tapping on the screen of the register. Iris got out her phone to tap to pay. As the payment went through, Sofia seemed to light up remembering something.

“Oh yeah! Twi told me to tell you that she’s planning a small get together–with the help of yours truly–and told me to tell you. She assumed you didn’t see her message.” Iris instinctively looked at her phone, “Oh, I must’ve accidently deleted her message… When is the get together? I’m assuming AJ and Ivory will be there?”

Sofia giggled and nodded, “Yup! And it’s two weeks from today!” Sofia bounced around like an over excited toddler, “It’s just a nicer dinner to catch up with everyone, so try not to show up in a tank top, Dashie!” Iris glared lightheartedly at the shorter girl, “Yeah, yeah, whatever,” Iris picked up the bag of food and waved at Sofia, “I guess I’ll see you then, Pinkie.” Sofia waved back excitedly as Iris left the store.

Iris watched the sun rise on the walk home, snacking on some of the food in the bag. When she walked through the door, she smiled seeing her girlfriend watering plants by the window. Iris stood for a moment admiring Sable’s beauty before shutting the door, subsequently making Sable known of her presence.

Iris smiled, mouth full of pastries, lifting the bag up to present it and in a muffled voice announced, “Breakfast!” Sable smiled and gave a small silent clap before  padding over to take the bag from her taller counterpart. The pale girl set the bag on the kitchen counter, and carefully dug through it to find warm cinnamon rolls.

Iris walked up behind Sable and hugged her from behind resting her head on Sable’s shoulder.

“Dash.” Sable lightly scolded. Iris lightly grunting in response. “You’re sweaty.” Iris nuzzled closer to her lover, hugging her tighter. Sable giggled softly, “Dash.” Iris grumbled. “Dashie. Go shower.” Iris dramatically let go of Sable, “Fine then, I can’t believe you just told me you don’t love me.” A teasing smile pulling at the athlete’s lips. Sable laughed, turning to her, “That is not what I said.”

Iris dramatically draped her hand over her face, “You hate me. You don’t love me.”

Sable giggled, lightly hitting the athlete’s chest, “I do love you! I just don’t love being sweaty!” Iris wrapped an arm around Sable's waist, pulling her close, “You sure?” Iris smiled down at her lover. Sable blushed playfully pushing Iris away, “Shut up and go shower.” Iris let go of Sable, “Fine. Since I’m so stinky and sweaty!” Sable smiled at the athlete as she walked away to take a shower, picking pieces off her cinnamon roll.

After getting out of the shower and drying off slightly, Iris checked their phone and noticed a notification tied to a name she didn’t immediately recognize. After a minute, Iris let out an audible gasp before rushing out of the bathroom and running to Sable.

“Babe! Look!”

Sable giggled at not only her excited naked girlfriend but also the black screen she was looking at. “Your phone turned off, goober.”
Iris grumbled incredulously, turning her phone back on, “Look who contacted me!” Sable studied the phone for a moment.

“Gilda?”

“Yeah! Don’t you remember her?”

Sable thought for a moment, “Vaguely I think?”

“She was like my best friend in middle school! I haven’t seen her in years!”

“What did she message you for?”

Iris froze for a moment, “I actually haven’t read the message yet…”

Sable laughed, “Well go get dressed first.” Iris nodded and ran to the bedroom to get dressed.

Iris walked into the living room, now in basketball shorts and a tank top, and walked over to Sable, who was curled up on one end of the couch, reading. The athlete plopped on the couch next to her girlfriend who, out of muscle memory, rested her head on Iris’ shoulder while reading. Iris pulled out her phone and unlocked it to read the message from her former friend.

“What’d she say?” Sable said without looking up.

“She wants to meet for lunch.” Iris responded, typing her response.

“Oh that’s fun!” Sable encouraged, “Are you gonna go?”

Iris kissed her forehead, “Duh. Do you wanna go?”

“No, I’m okay. You guys should catch up with just you two.”
