Zuko’s Test

Summary:

Being an Omega, Zuko never had much choice or freedom. Even in Banishment his life is chosen for him. Zuko was soon sailed back to the Fire Nation for a marriage with the now Admiral Zhao.

Zuko has to survive this marriage just like he survived his two years in banishment.

But will it work?

Notes:

This is my first fic so I hope it turns out good. It might take a while to update these however.

Chapter 1: Chapter One

Chapter Text

Zuko felt a few tears slide down his cheeks as he stared in the mirror in front of him. His hair, long ago cut of its phoenix's tail, now lay just above his shoulders, shaggy. He was dressed in silk robes that were white with gold accents. Zuko’s scar over his left eye stood out on his paler than normal face. On his neck, over his scent glands, laid a gold ribbon. On his right ring finger was a golden band. Zuko’s marriage ring. He was married.

He quickly wiped away his tears and plastered on a smile. Soon he was to….do less than pleasant things with his husband to seal the marriage.

A knock on the door to his right caught his attention. “Who is it?” He asked with a steady voice. It was silent for a second before he heard his voice. “Stop hiding away in there little prince. It’s time for the fun part of this evening,” Zhao’s voice practically purred with delight.

Zuko shuddered with disgust but quickly got up and moved to the door. Once it was open he saw Zhao dressed in his deep red and black wedding robes. He had a cruel smirk on his face as he took in his…wife.

No sooner had he opened the door did Zhao pounce on him. Zuko was pinned to the wall next to the door and roughly kissed. The kiss felt disgusting to Zuko but telling by Zhao’s moan it was everything to him.

“Look at you little prince. Couldn’t wait to get my hands on you since you were twelve. Now you’re all mine, even in your banishment,” Zhao huskly whispered into his mouth. Zuko glared into the Alpha’s eyes. Zhao wrapped his hand around Zuko's throat and ripped the ribbon off his scent glands.

Zhao sniffed deeply on his neck and smirked. “You smell good little omega, can’t wait to taste you too.”

A rogue tear joined the floor.

Once Zhao was done ravaging his body, he left with a promise to be back. Zuko had never felt such hopelessness before.

He had felt it when he was first banished, two years ago. Yet, it was never this powerful.

Zuko had been taken from his ship that he shared with his crew and uncle. He was taken to Zhao’s ship and sailed home in a cell, then married off to Zhao within the hour. His first time home in two years and it was to be some wife for a pediphile!

Soon he was to be carted away on Zhao’s ship to be a good little omega bitch while he searched for the Avatar. There was no way home for him. He was never supposed to find the Avatar! He was just a dumb dumb dumb bitch.

Zuko spent the rest of night crying in the sheets until he finally, finally passed out.

•<•>•<•>•

The next time Zuko woke up was in a big metal room with familiar swaying. He observed the room, not bothered by the fact he was moved in his sleep looking…like that. There was obviously a Fire Nation banner on the wall to his left. On his right was a desk that had some papers scattered about the surface. Zuko was on a big bed with dark red sheets that reeked of Zhao.

Even while hating the smell of Zhao, Zuko liked the fact he wasn’t in the cell. Even though he would miss the other people in it. Especially Oshu. He was five, and the youngest prisoner on board. All the prisoners were meant to be placed in a prison but Zhao changed his mind and decided to keep them onboard for now.

Zuko was startled out of his thoughts at the sound of footsteps approaching the door. ‘Shit!’ He thought. Zuko took deep breaths and tried to stay calm as the door opened.

His nightmare has just started..

Chapter 2: Chapter Two

Summary:

Zuko manages to find a way to see Oshu, along with the rest of the prisoners.

Chapter Text

It had been a week since Zuko and Zhao had been married. Zhao expected him to cook with the onboard chef. Along with serving tea, doing laundry with some of the other Omegas, and serving Zhao with his needs. If he failed to do any of this, or did badly at the tasks, he was punished. Usually with slaps or punches, however if he he did really really horribly it was with fire.

Zuko was currently kneeling at a table in a side room off to the left of his bedroom. He was pouring tea into two cups, Zhao tapping his fingers impatiently across from him. Zuko placed the kettle down on the table and gave Zhao his cup silently. It took a couple moments before Zuko dared to speak up. “Husband,” he spoke, clearing his throat slightly. “I was wondering if I can start getting the prisoners their meals.”

“Why would you ever need to go down in that dirty place again? Unless you miss being in that cell?” Zhao asked with veiny hidden disgust. He placed his cup down, the contents splashing around. Some drops landed on the table.

Zuko took a calming breath before pleading his case. “It’s not that I miss it. However I think my…Omega instincts are acting up. It would just appease me so if I could care for them.” He tried to put up the act of a faithful Omega wife. He had to see Oshu.

“I don’t know Omega,” Zhao muttered while stroking his chin. His ugly tufts of sideburns drawing attention to his hairless chin. Zuko’s fingers twitched to grab him by those ugly things and rip them out.

However, he instead took a steadying breath. Zuko could do this. He had to. Zuko circled his tea cup with his finger, with a forced flirty smirk. “Maybe I can convince you, otherwise?” He dipped his thumb in the tea and brought it to his mouth. Zuko swirled his tongue around the digit.

With a growl the Alpha rounded the table.

•<•>•<•>•

Zuko felt disgusting, but he really did have to see the prisoners. He couldn’t just leave them in that dirty place. Even if it took years he could get them out. Especially little Oshu. He had learned in his time in the cell that Oshu was taken when he was three.

Why he was still here, Zuko didn’t know. He was glad that he was, even with the circumstances, since the little guy grew on him in the three weeks he was in the cell.

Zuko was given permission to give the prisoners their meals from now on. Zhao finally convinced. The meal was a bowl of rice and rapidly stalling bread, all for the three prisoners onboard.

Balancing the tray on his hip, he opened the heavy metal door. Said door was located near the rear of the ship, at the end of the long hall. The light in the room holding the cells was dark. No light being allowed in because it was too ‘human.’

There were two growls that reverberated the walls. They were probably expecting a snotty Omega to be doing this, or Zhao himself. “Well I’m glad you’re happy to see me,” Zuko joked lightheartedly.

The growls stopped immediately, followed by a little voice yelling “Zuko! Zuko!” That was Oshu. Zuko kneeled down in front of the cell that all three were held in. There they were.

Sa Lah, the oldest prisoner being thirty-two. She was a Nonbender, however she led a rebellion in an Earth Kingdom colony. She managed to kill five Fire Nation soldiers before being forced to submit. She was an Alpha, and why she wasn’t sent to the Boiling Rock escaped Zuko.

Revrak, being twenty-six. He was a captured Water Bender. For some reason he wasn’t sent to death and instead rotted in ship to ship. He was sent to Zhao’s ship two years ago, but he has been passed between ships for ten years. His bending was near nonexistent, years of disuse and burning of the hands. He was also an Alpha.

Then there was Oshu, being five. He was taken away from his parents when he was three. Apparently his parents tried to overthrow the Fire Nation in an Earth Kingdom colony. They failed and their punishment was the have Oshu taken from them. He was a Earth Bender but hid it from Zhao, Zuko was proud of him for it. He was also an Alpha.

“Hey Oshu,” Zuko said softly. Letting a real smile grace his features. “I missed you guys, but I managed to convince Zhao so now I only serve you meals.” He placed the tray in the open flap of the cell. Sa Lah grabbed the tray and handed it off to Revrak.

“I even snuck in some Sweet Buns,” Zuko softly spoke. He didn’t want to keep his brave facade in the room, however he had to stay strong. Zuko opened his dark red, silky, robes and pulled out a couple Sweet Buns. He slid them through the flap.

Oshu hurried over to the flap and grabbed one of the Sweet Buns. “Thank you Zuzu,” Oshu said with a big grin. Zuko felt a pang in his heart, only Azula called him that…

Su Lah and Revrak took their share along with the tray to the back of the cell. “Come on Oshu, we can split all of this between us,” Su Lah said, taking charge. “Thank you Zuko. How has it been?” Zuko knew that Su Lah and Revrak were the only ones who grasped the reality of being married to Zhao.

When Zuko was in the cell with them Zhao would come by and taunt Zuko about being his wife. Oshu never grasped the whole situation, rather cuddling into Zuko’s scent glands.

“I like to think it’s going great,” Zuko said with a slight quiver in his voice. Revrak gave him a pitying look while bringing some rice to his mouth. His face immediately screwed up in disgust. “It’s cold, it’s usually more warmer.” He explained, pushing through his disgust to eat the mouthful.

Zuko reached a hand in the cell, “I can try to heat it up.” Oshu giggled and ran up to him with the bowl of rice. “Here Zuzu! Do Sparky Sparky Boom!” Zuko grinned at his the pup. “Well I don’t know if I can do that much now, but so can try later. Okay?” When Oshu nodded Zuko grabbed the bowl.

It took more effort then it should have to bring heat to his hands. Zuko tiredly cupped the bowl and sent the heat into the rice. Soon the rice was steaming and Zuko handed the bowl back to Oshu. Who quickly ran back to Revrak with a big grin.

Su Lah gave a sad look at the Firebender. “Oh Zuko, your bending is all sorts of fuck up isn’t it?” She took the offered rice bowl and ate some, then handed it back to Oshu. She instructed Oshu to eat the rest. When Oshu was distracted with the food, Su Lah turned back to him. “Zhao’s restricting your bending, huh?” At Zuko’s nod Su Lah gave a soft growl.

“Maybe while you’re here you can practice your bending. I know Oshu would love it.” The female Alpha suggested. Zuko’s brows furrowed before he conceded to the suggestion. “Of course Su Lah, I would be happy to.”

“Zuzu! Zuzu! Can you do it now? Now? Now?! Now!” Oshu yelled, running over to the front of the cell again. Revrak and Su Lah finally started to get their share, the Sweet Buns. Zuko giggled at the pup’s enthusiasm.

“Okay, Okay! I’ll try, however my bending isn’t as good as it was a few weeks ago.” He told the little Alpha. Zuko took a deep breath and cupped his hands together. Heating up his palms, Zuko wished hard for the sparks to show.

After a couple seconds sparks flew from his hands. They all shot up and hit together in the middle of the air. It caused a small explosion, the heat wafting over Zuko and Oshu. The pup giggled, pleased, and put his hands through the bars.

Zuko let his palms cool down before placing Oshu’s hands in his. “I have to leave now, but you’ll be good won’t you?” Zuko asked, leaning forward. Oshu frowned but nodded enthusiastically. “I promise! I’ll even grow strong, like you!”

Oshu was pulled back by Revrak and lead to the only warm corner. “Bye bye Zuzu!” He shouted before laying down on Revrak’s lap. “Bye Oshu. And goodbye Su Lah, Revrak.”

Zuko made a swift exit, taking the tray and empty bowl with him. If a few tears slid down his cheeks, well no one was around to see.

Chapter 3: Chapter Three

Chapter Text

Zuko rubbed his slightly swollen stomach. It had been a few months onboard Zhao’s ship. He was currently folding Zhao’s clothings, having washed them earlier that morning. Zuko was doing this in their room, only feeling…slightly grossed out about the whole thing.

Zuko was kneeling on a rug that lay at the end of their bed. His back was to the bed, he was leaning against it to support his newly added weight.

In front of him the door slammed open. Zuko jumped but once seeing his husband storming in he quickly went back to folding. Zuko heard more than saw Zhao throwing his armor off.

“Omega!” Zhao shouted after the clanging of metal stopped. Zuko took a calming breath, putting down the article of clothing. He turned around and noted how Zhao was standing. His feet were planted further apart and his whole body was tense. This would most likely turn into a fight.

Zuko tried to smile reassuringly, “Yes dear?” A threatening growl rang through the metal room. “Get. Over. Here.” Zhao growled through gritted teeth. The Omega stood on shaky legs and walked to stand before Zhao.

Zhao grabbed a hold of Zuko’s shoulders, his fingers digging into the flesh through the thin robe. “H-husband?” Zuko hesitantly asked. Zhao’s face contorted in anger, suddenly whirling them both around and slamming Zuko into the cold wall.

Zuko’s tongue darted out, wetting his lips nervously. “Is…something wrong?” He then hesitatingly added, “D-dear?” Zhao’s face softened just a fraction before a sneer enveloped his face.

“You spent two years searching for the Avatar. What leads do you have?” The Alpha growled out, pressing his face closer. Zuko whined softly under his breath, he wasn’t really sure he wanted to go after the Avatar anymore. “Uh, I checked all of the Earth Kingdom so far. I suppose we can check the Air Temples?”

Slowly the pressure on his shoulders were released, Zhao’s hands still lay there however. He had a thoughtful look on his face before nodding slowly. “I suppose I could search there…” Then his face turned into a sultry grin.

“However, right now… You are here, pinned to our wall, defenseless.” Zhao practically purred out. Zuko felt bile rise up in his throat, and it wasn’t even morning sickness. Lips crashed into his, moving very quickly and hotly. Zuko tried to ignore his nausea and recuperate the kiss.

A moan escaped Zhao’s lips, bouncing off Zuko’s. Teeth, sharp as fangs, dung into his bottom lip until he gave up access. Zuko felt gross when his mouth was invaded quickly by Zhao. When he heard the unbuckling of a belt Zuko shuddered and shut his brain off.

•<•>•<•>•

Zuko was hiding out in the kitchen, the one place Zhao refused to go in. Apparently it made him look ‘soft.’ The chef, Umosa, was a seventy something old lady. She was around five feet tall but she had a slight hunch that made her appear shorter. She had black hair which was almost completely gray, and her wrinkles had wrinkles.

“You know you can’t just hide in here every time it gets bad, right?” Umosa comments while scrubbing the counter. “It’ll catch up to you eventually.” Her back was facing Zuko, who was sitting on the opposite counter.

He sighed and brought his legs up to his chest. “I just…don’t have anything else. I feel like everything has been taken from me, I feel lost.” And dirty. The old woman tsks under her breath and finally faces the younger Omega.

“I don’t have wisdom I can give you with that. Your Uncle would definitely be better than me,” Umosa tells him. Zuko doesn’t even try to question how she knows Uncle has bundles of wisdom. It seemed to be one of her quirks, knowing things. “However, I can tell you this. You are not alone. Many of the Fire Nation love you! Don’t just for being an Omega or the Fire Lord’s son. And what of your sister? I’m sure the heiress loves you!”

Zuko can’t help the soft smile that grows on his face at the mention of Azula. “She did when before I was banished, I’m not sure now. Haven’t seen her..” His smile turned to a frown at that. Umosa frowned too, she moved over to Zuko’s side of the kitchen and started to wipe them to his right. “She didn’t show for your wedding?”

He had thought it over many nights before. Why? Where was she? Although the answer was most likely crying in her room. Azula would hate to admit it, but she didn’t want Zuko to be married off to some Alpha. She was always saying how she would protect him from the other Alphas.

After their mom disappeared, strangely after Azulon’s death, Azula had been more attached to Zuko. He had found it strange but brushed it off as a clingy little sister. The truth was, after Ursa left, Azula looked to Zuko as her mother. It brought Zuko to tears when he found out.

Little Azula, eight at the time, looking to Zuko as her mother. Had Ursa never been around enough for her in the mothering department? However, looking back Ursa was always looking at her daughter in fear. Never love.

It was always Zuko who took care of her. Bathed her —even though that was a servant’s job—, helped clothe her, did her hair, loved her.

So, yes, Zuko felt gutted that he hadn’t seen Azula, his child, in two years. He had hoped she would be there at the dreadful wedding. But, it was a lost cause.

“No, not from what I could tell.”

•<•>•<•>•

Zuko felt like he could combust.

A letter laid on his bed.

From Azula.

He felt like he could giggle from the irony. Zuko was just talking about how he hadn’t heard from Azula in two years and now there was a letter from her! Zuko bounced on the balls of his feet, trying to get some energy out.

With a calming breath Zuko peeled open the letter.

Dear Zuko,

I think I should start this letter out by saying how sorry I am for not getting into contact with you sooner. I realized it was foolish not to do so too late, however I am indeed writing to you now. As you can see I am learning how to write elegantly, like a Fire Lord should.

I miss you— I don’t like how far away you have been for two years. I should have come to the wedding, I would have seen you at least. I didn’t want to see my failure of a promise. Selfish, I know.

I don’t have enough words to tell you on paper, so I’ll save them. For when I see you again, I will have all the time in the world to tell you. So, I’ll instead tell you some news about Uncle and Lu Ten.

Uncle was meant to return shortly after your marriage. However, he hasn’t. I believe he might be searching for “inner peace” or something stupid like that. I don’t hold it against him for not returning, Father is a thorn in the side to deal with. I guess dealing with his niece and son isn’t worth it. Lu Ten took a small crew out to search for him. That was a month ago. No sightings have been seen of either Uncle or Cousin.

My guess is that Lu Ten found Uncle and they joined together in a peace journey. Not that I will ever tell Father that, I’ve been keeping him at bay with an idea about them looking for the Avatar on the down low. His dumbass is buying it for now.

That’s really all the news I have, although I am thinking of reaching out to Ty Lee and Mai soon. Have the gang back together.. We would only be missing you.

Anyway, that’s all I have. I will be in touch when I can.

Love,

Azula

Zuko felt himself grin brightly at the idea of Uncle and Lu Ten escaping the Fire Nation. He was saddened at the idea of Azula being stuck with him though. Zuko looked backed at the only scribbled line in the note. Looking very closely he noticed it said, I miss you, which made his eyes water slightly.

“I miss you too Azula,” Zuko whispered to the note.

Sorry for taking a while to update.

I’ve been busy with schoolwork unfortunately.

Chapter 4: Chapter Four

Summary:

Zuko gives birth and has some memories along the way.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Zuko felt like he was going to pop. He was finally, finally, reaching the end of this cursed pregnancy. He didn’t hate the kid growing in him, not really, but Zhao? His blood boiled when he wasn’t cowering in fear. Apparently being pregnant didn’t save him from ‘learning opportunities.’

“Prince Zuko you don’t have to do that,” An Omega, Imonu, told him to his right. Zhao had assigned Imonu as a sort of ‘helper’ during his final stages of pregnancy. Zuko’s hold on the rag tightened. “It’s fine, I can do it.” He all but growled at the older Omega. A soft slap to his wrist made the rag fall to the floor.

Imonu quickly swiped the rag from the floor and placed her hands on her hips. Her mid-length black hair fell over her shoulders with the action. Her amber eyes narrowed in defiance. “I don’t care that you’re the prince, you are pregnant! No cleaning like this when you’re so close to giving birth. I will do this and you will sit in that chair!” Even though the Omega was only a few years older than him, and a different ranking, he was quickly intimidated.

Zuko swallowed his pride and wobbled over to the chair in the corner of a random Alpha’s room. Imonu silently got quickly to work, leaving Zuko to stew in his own thoughts.

They were not happy.

•<•>•<•>•

There was a sound like rushing water, which was strange because they were pretty deep in the belly of the ship. Zuko tilted his head, very confused, where did it come from? He suddenly felt very weird…and wet?

“Prince Zuko!” Imonu shrieked, terrified. Hands grabbed his upper arms and started to quickly walk him down the hall. “Your water broke, don’t panic, I’ll get you to the healer and it will be fine!” Now that she mentioned it Zuko did feel very wet between his thighs. It also was starting to hurt down there.

In a blink of an eye Zuko was being laid down on a cot in the healer’s room. The healer, Yko, placed a damp cloth on his forehead.

Soon he was being told it was to push.

“Time to what?” Zuko shouted panickingly.

“Did no one teach you Prince Zuko?” Yko asked with a grin. “The baby’s got to come out from somewhere.”

A sudden pain jolted his lower body. Tears filled his eyes with a whine.

“Now, push!”

****

“Why can’t we see Lu Ten!” A ten year old Zuko whined to his mother. Azula, eight years old, stood part way behind him with her hand in his. Tears glistened in her eyes but she was too stubborn to let them fall. “You said he was hurt in the battle! We need to know he will be okay.”

Ursa frowned down at the pair of siblings. But Zuko could see her resolve cracking. Finally, with a sigh, their mother conceded. “If I let you two in, do you guys promise to not get in the way or distract anyone?” Zuko nodded eagerly. “We promise Mama!”

With a barely seen uncertain glance towards Azula, Ursa opened the healer’s doors. The Alpha and Omega pair swiftly made their way to the cot with the most activity. “Lu Ten,” Zuko yelled once they got to his side. The Alpha was unconscious, near him were two official healers. Both were Betas but there also was another person nearby who smelled like an Omega.

A closer look revealed the Omega to be a person with rags and long black hair. They had darker colored skin and blue eyes. A ball of floating, glowing, water started to cover Lu Ten’s chest. Zuko’s jaw dropped as the water bender started to heal their cousin. He felt Azula’s hand tightened against his, making him look over.

Her eyes were shining, not with tears anymore, no, with awe. Azula had always liked other bending, especially water bending. She would spend hours with Zuko just gushing about how healing was such a useful skill. Of course she only did this when the two were alone. Azula said if word got out her image would be tarnished.

“Prince Zuko, Princess Azula, what do you think you’re doing here?” One of the healers asked, now not having to do anything. Zuko turned his head back to the healers. “Mama said we could, we won’t get in the way.” Zuko circled Azula’s knuckles with his thumb absentmindedly.

The Beta paled a bit before rushing off to the next patient. The other healer quickly did the same. It left Azula and Zuko with the water bender and Lu Ten. “Hi!” Azula cheerfully said to the bender.

The bender spared the kids a glance before refocusing on Lu Ten. Zuko swatted at Azula with his free hand. “Azula! Let her focus, you don’t want Lu Ten dying because of your excitement do you?” That sobered her up real quick. With a soft apology Azula stayed silent while watching the female heal their cousin.

****

“Push!”

****

“Shh Dummy,” Azula hissed softly at Zuko. “Do you want to get caught? Imagine what dad would do.” Zuko pouted but continued to be dragged along by his sister. They were currently sneaking down to the castle dungeons. It was meant for prisoners, like Lu Ten’s healer, for quick access.

Which is also why they are heading down there in the first place… Azula had grown too excited about meeting a water bender to think about anything else. So, even though it had been only a few hours since the bender was taken away, here they were.

For a reason that went beyond them, no guards were in sight. Apparently these prisoners weren’t a big worry. “Do you see her?” Zuko asked while looking left and right into empty cells. Well, not quite empty. There were a few stray mice roaming in them. “Not yet.” Was her reply.

Then they heard it, chains scraping across the stone flooring. The young Alpha quickly sprinted towards the cell, dragging her brother with her. Inside it was barren beside a bucket and the chained up bender. Who looked up in surprise once she heard a cheerful, “Hello!”

The bender stared wide eyed at them before recognition sparkled in her eyes. “What are you doing here children?” A rough voice echoed around the dirty hall. Azula grinned brightly and quickly sat down in front of the cell, dragging Zuko down too. “I just wanted to ask you questions! Especially about your bending,” Azula told her, her voice a pitch higher than normal.

“Me?” She asked incredulously. “You want to ask a prisoner questions? Well I hate to say that not much goes on down here.” Azula’s smile grew a tad smaller but she was too stubborn to give up. Zuko glared at the bender for the tone but she seemed to not notice.

Azula nodded and quickly crossed her legs. “Yes, like… what’s your name? And..how did you get here?” The bender’s scowl softened a tad. With a sigh her rough voice filled the area again. “Yuri. I got captured by your soldiers a long time ago.”

“Why were you captured?”

“I’m a water bender, that’s why. Your Fire Lord thought it was too dangerous, so here I am”

A pause before Azula asked, “Which pole do you come? How about your family? Or..your friends? How do you heal? Are you sad?” Zuko hissed warningly into Azula’s hair. Although she seemed to not even care.

Yuri’s face tightened, like she ate sour Fire flakes, but she still answered. “I come from the South Pole. I had a family yes, I haven’t seen them in nearly a decade. I had a sister, she just got married to the Chief’s son when I…left. My whole village were my friends. I heal because that’s what water bending can do, I learned in the North Pole when I was young. And of course I’m sad! Do you see where I am?”

“Sorry.”

****

“I see the head!”

****

“It’s going to be okay Azula,” Zuko told her when they were both curled up in his bed. It had been a month since Lu Ten had made a full recovery. Not too long ago it had been revealed that their grandfather, Azulon, had passed away in his sleep. However instead of Uncle Iroh being crowned Fire Lord it was Ozai, their father. Ursa had come into his room the night before, spouting nonsense, then left.

Zuko had searched for her and even asked around, but no one had seen her. Azula’s head was in his lap, her face pressed into his stomach while she finally cried. “Father’s cruel! I don’t want him on the throne!” It was muffled yet Zuko still heard it. It broke his heart to hear his little sister crying but he knew she didn’t want to be coddled. At least not now.

Ozai had told them after the celebrations that Zuko was to soon be put on the market for courting. Apparently he was old enough to now be given away. Zuko thought it was bullshit but resigned himself to it anyway. Azula, on the other hand, was very emotional about it.

“You're supposed to stay with me! Not some knotheaded Alpha! I’ve seen what the other Alphas do to their Omegas!” Azula jolted up to grab his shoulders and scream in his face. Tears streamed down her cheeks, her hair stuck up a bit from where she lay. “I don’t want you to go through that.” The last words were said in a whisper. Her teeth gritted together to try and stop more sobs from escaping.

“I know Azula, but you can’t stop it from happening. It’s expected of me as an Omega, especially since I’m the Prince.” Zuko said the last word with a little flare. As expected Azula giggled through her sniffling. “More like a princess dum-dum.”

With a fake exaggerated gasp Zuko lightly shoved Azula off him, only to tickle her. “Ack! Get off Zuzu!” She squealed through giggles. “What’s that? I can’t hear you over all my princessing.” Zuko told her with a grin. After a bit he stopped so she could catch her breath. He could see that her mood had lifted but she definitely haven’t forgotten.

However, Azula could tell Zuko didn’t want to talk about anymore and went along with it. With a yawn Azula burrowed under the covers. “Come on Zuzu, I think it’s time to sleep. We have a long day tomorrow.” Zuko smiled softly at her before slipping under the covers too.

Before drifting off completely he heard Azula ask with a soft voice, “Zuzu, can you sing that song Lu Ten likes?”

“Of course Lala.”

“Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Like fragile, tiny shells
Drifting in the foam
Little soldier boy
Come marching home
Brave soldier boy
Comes marching home”

She was out not even halfway through.

****

A bundle was placed into an exhausted Zuko’s arms. “It’s a boy, Zhao shall be here soon.” Imonu told him gently. Zuko stared down at the bundle in his arms. The baby was crying gently, their cheeks were a little chubby. Beautiful amber eyes opened to gaze upon their mother. “Hey angel,” Zuko spoke softly to his baby.

The door opened which a small creak as Zhao hurried in. Zuko could see it in his eyes, Zhao cared for their baby. Maybe…Zhao would be happier. The Alpha kneeled down next to the cot and soon the healer and Imonu left the room. “Hey Zhao,” Zuko said towards the male. Something in him hoped that Zhao would be happier. It was dashed when Zhao roughly grabbed their baby from his arms.

Zuko bit back a growl at the action, the harsh movement made their child loudly cry out again. Zhao stared down at the baby before narrowing his eyes. “He better be an Alpha when he grows up, or I’m blaming you.” He spoke, not taking his eyes off the baby.

“Of course Husband,” Zuko told him. “What do you have in mind for his name?” Zhao finally looked up at him with a smirk.

“Sozin”

This chapter was longer than I expected it to be. I was planning on adding some more scenes from the past but obviously decided against it.

I hope you have a good day and night!

Chapter 5: Chapter Five

Summary:

Zuko finds out how exhausting parenting can be. Also the Avatar comes into the picture, finally.

Chapter Text

He was tired. Zuko had known that babies were a lot of work, of course he had. Many classes upon classes of ‘How to be a “Proper” Omega’ taught him that. But that was nothing compared to the deep bone exhaustion he felt right now.

Sozin had been up for almost the whole night, until he finally finally got him to bed a few hours ago. Then Zhao came in and dragged him away to make tea. Tea! Popping a baby out a few months ago didn’t save him from making that arrogant Alpha tea. So, yes, Zuko was very very tired.

Zhao had said earlier that they would stop earlier today. Where? He has no clue. Even though they were both “searching” for the Avatar didn’t mean Zhao shared things with him. Agni forbid that Zhao acts descent.

Zuko had gotten a cradle at an Earth Kingdom port a month before Sozin’s birth. He put it next to his side of the bed and was forever grateful for it. Even through exhaustion and overwhelmed tears, Zuko loved waking up next to his baby. Especially when he couldn’t sleep and could see Sozin breathing. It might seem weird but it’s a gift…Sozin’s a gift. A light in the hell hole.

Zuko sighed and got up from his kneeled position next to the cradle. With a yawn and a stretch he headed for the door. He didn’t plan to leave for long, just enough to get started on a pot of tea for Zhao. Apparently his husband liked his tea the best, Zuko guessed he did learn something from Iroh after all. That thought made him pause in his steps and stare at the wall.

Where was his Uncle? In Azula’s first letter she had mentioned that Uncle had gone missing. That their cousin had gone to search for him. Were they planning something? Maybe they would come for him.. Zuko remembered the early nights on the ship when he would wish for his Uncle to save him. Maybe burst in the door like a raging spirit and burn Zhao to ash where he stood.

Of course that never did happen, instead he had Sozin. Zuko tried to not feel bitter about Sozin. He was a gift. Just maybe not how he got Sozin.

Zuko cleared his throat and walked in the side room quickly. He went around the table, long-wise to the door, and stopped at the counter. He crouched down and opened the cabinet doors under the counter. He pulled out a teapot and things to make Spiced Tea. Zhao’s favorite. Honestly, Zuko's favorite was Uncle’s Jasmine Tea.

He placed the teapot on one of the burners and tried to start the fire up. Zuko focused on his hand and thought about heat. Nothing worked. His bending was getting weaker and weaker every day. Su Lah had pointed that out when he gave them food the other day. Not having used it everyday, despite trying to train when giving his friends food. Having Sozin had also greatly reduced his bending, apparently birth takes a lot out of you. Who would have known?

Sighing, Zuko grabbed a spark rock and quickly started the fire with those. If he got down with the tea quickly he would have time to take a quick nap. Sozin sleeps well so at least Zuko didn’t have to deal with that.

The teapot is just starting to steam when he hears it. The door to the bedroom opening, screeching loudly. Metal on metal never sounded well. Sozin most definitely woke up. Zuko took a deep breath to calm himself just as the side room door opened up.

“I found something dear,” Zhao told him when he turned around. Zuko was surprised, and a little angry, to see Sozin in his arms. How dare he touch Zuko’s baby. His sweet baby was wide awake and none the wiser to the danger he was in. He reached his little hands up and tugged on Zhao’s sideburns.

Zuko breathed in sharply but made no move towards his son and husband. Sozin giggled as he fisted the hair but Zuko could see Zhao’s face go blank. “Omega. Take your son and finish making me tea.” Zhao’s voice was cold and Zuko hurried to free Sozin from his arms.

Sozin pouted as he was forced to release Zhao’s hair and burrowed his small head into Zuko’s chest. Zuko felt calmer with his son in his arms. He felt like he could protect Sozin from Zhao’s wrath like this.

The teapot started to whistle so with one hand Zuko lifted it off the lit stove. The handle, arching over the metal pot, was hot but Zuko ignored it in order to pour the tea into two cups. He placed the hot pot on a thick piece of fabric and snuffed out the flame. He then gathered the cups of tea in one hand and walked over to the table.

Zhao had long since sat at the table, on a cushion closest to the door. Zuko placed one of the cups in front of Zhao before sitting opposite of him. He watched as the Alpha took a sip of his tea before taking one of his own. “You found something?” He gently prompted, curious despite himself.

The Alpha looked at him sharply and Zuko quickly ducked his head. His hair, now grown a bit below his shoulder blades, brushed against Sozin. His baby cooed and immediately grabbed a fistful of his hair. Zuko didn’t mind at the least and smiled softly at him.

“I have spotted a beam of light in the distance. We believe it to be the Avatar.” Zhao told him with a malicious gleam in his eyes. Zuko’s own eyes widened at the information. The Avatar… Zuko had to stop this, without putting himself in danger. He cleared his throat hesitantly, meeting Zhao’s eyes. “Why must we go after the Avatar? Who’s to say it wasn’t the northern lights anyway?”

Zuko should probably know by now he couldn’t say anything without putting himself in danger. Zhao’s eyes grew cold and cruel in an instant. “When I find the Avatar you will be welcomed home once and for all. It also opens the doors for me to be the Fire Lord. I’m sure that bringing home such a powerful person will secure me a spot with Ozai more than marrying you has.” Zuko felt himself swallow and he quickly looked down towards Sozin again.

“Of course Alpha.” Zuko said softly before quickly adding, “I’m sure you’ll make a great Fire Lord.” Zuko felt his fingers tremble a little but he steeled himself and instead took a sip of his tea. He of course did not think Zhao would be a great Fire Lord. Agni, Zuko thinks Zhao could be possibly worse than the first Sozin. He should write to Azula about Zhao’s plans.

Zhao took a sip from his tea, he placed it down before addressing Zuko again. “We’re going to check the Southern Water Tribe village. I want you to join me. You will finally see your Alpha at work.” He purred with a big sinister grin. Zuko’s eyes went wide and his hold on Sozin tightened.

“Who will watch Sozin?” He asked, just shy of showing his anger. He was getting better at the emotions business. “One of the Omegas can, maybe Imonu. She seems trustworthy enough. Not incompetent like those other dizzy Omegas.” Zhao told him with a dismissive wave of his hand. Zuko felt his eyes narrow at Zhao’s words. But, at last, what could he do? So with a lot of force Zuko put on a soft smile and agreed with Zhao.

•<•>•<•>•

Zuko was on edge…and cold. He stood on the deck next to Zhao with a couple soldiers behind them in formation. His arms felt empty and he worried for Sozin constantly. He usually wasn’t away for this long. Zuko noticed how close they were getting to the snow, and the village walls.

He turned his head towards Zhao, his arms wrapped around himself. “Shouldn’t we stop? We’re going to hit the wall.” Zhao only spared him a glance before shouting up at the helmsman. “Full speed ahead! Don’t stop until we breach the wall.” Zuko’s eyes widened in disbelief just as they finally crashed into the snow.

The ship jolted a bit and tore through the snow, and eventually the wall, with a bit of difficulty. Zuko’s nails, which had gotten long, dug into his arms as he tried to control his breathing. “Put down the ramp!” Zhao yelled behind them. The front of the ship, ramp, slammed on the ground with a loud thud. Zhao motioned for the soldiers to follow him as they walked slowly down the ramp.

At the end of the ramp there was a boy who had his face painted with a weird stick in his arms. The boy was crouched on the ground, likely fell when the ramp came down. Behind the boy were a handful of people, at least twenty. They consisted mainly of elders and children. Oddly enough Zuko saw only male children, no male grownups.

When they got halfway down the ramp the boy screamed and charged at Zhao. Zuko felt his heart rate spike in terror for the boy. Zhao swiftly kicked the boy over the edge, the boy landing face first in the snow. At least it was a soft landing… Zuko helplessly thought. They finally reached the end of the ramp and touched down on the cold snow.

Zuko also finally realized how freaking cold it was. He was only dressed in a thin silky robe, red. His shoes were more like flats and he had tights on. Not the best to wear in this weather. Zhao, the asshole, wore heavy armor and thick boots. His bending probably kept him warm too. What a terrible time for Zuko’s bending to be non-existent.

Zhao singled for him and the soldiers to stop at the edge of the ramp. He, however, walked to stand in front of the villagers. “Where are you hiding him?” He barked out. His stance read danger, one move from this village and Zhao would strike.

..Silence..

No one answered him. If Zuko was in their shoes he wouldn’t either. It took everything in him to not facepalm. How would the villages know who ‘him’ was? Zuko thought his husband would be smarter than this.

Zhao’s arm shot out and grabbed an old lady that was in front of him. A girl that would be around Azula’s age tried to grab the elder back but fell short. Zuko took a step forward, not even sure what he was going to do, when one of the soldiers gripped his wrist. It wasn’t strong but a warning. Zuko looked behind him and saw one of the younger soldiers, Lee, had grabbed him. A small shake of the head and a nervous glance to Zhao made Zuko stay where he was.

Zuko wasn’t the only one afraid of Zhao it seemed. Seeing the compliance from Zuko the hand fell away and lay perfectly still at his side. “He’d be about this age, Master of all Elements.” Zhao shook the woman for emphasis. The villagers gave Zhao a blank look and didn’t say anything again. Zhao, clearly frustrated, threw the elder back into the girl’s arms.

Zhao shot flames across the villagers, trying to intimidate them. “I know you're hiding him.” At that moment Zuko saw the boy had gotten out of the snow bed and had grabbed his stick off the ground. While shouting he ran towards Zhao. This poor boy, Zuko thought to himself. Zhao stroked out a hand causing the boy to flip over Zhao and land further away on his butt.

The older Alpha, Zuko got a whiff of Alpha on the boy, didn’t give him a chance to recover before shooting a stream of fire at him. The boy rolled out the way with a yelp and tossed a curved stick at Zhao. A boomerang, he noted. It flew by Zhao’s head and apparently he didn’t see what it was because he mocked the boy. “You missed,” He snarled.

A little boy, probably four at most, tossed a spear at the older boy while shouting, “Show no fear!” The cute kid even had a little high pitched voice. Of course no kid was as cute as Sozin was. The boy caught the spear and charged at Zhao. Honestly, Zuko was surprised at the boy’s courage and how Zhao hadn’t burnt the kid to a crisp yet.

Zhao broke the spear with a quick hit of the hand. It was kind of funny seeing how easily broken it was. Zhao grabbed hold of the remaining piece and burned the wood quickly. Then he swiped the boy’s feet from under him, causing him to fall to the ground with a startled yelp. From where Zuko stood from several feet away he could tell Zhao was smirking down at the boy.

Just then something hit the back of Zhao’s helmet with force. It was the boy’s boomerang. Zuko felt himself smirk. The smirk was quickly wiped off his face when Zhao growled and flame surrounded his hands.

That’s when something strange happened. A blur of yellow, red, and dark blue went through a gap in the line of soldiers and Zuko. The blur went through Zhao with enough force to knock him off his feet and onto his back. Zuko held a hand up to his mouth to hide a giggle, nudging Lee with his elbow. Lee’s mouth quirked up and he quickly turned his head away.

The children of the villagers started to cheer, until they were covered with snow when the blur jolted to a stop. The blur turned out to be a bald kid and a penguin. The penguin, which Zuko only knew because of Uncle, waddled off somewhere. The bald kid, who had yellow and red clothes along with a staff and blue arrow tattoos, greeted the boy and the girl. Turns out the boy’s name was Sokka and the girl’s name was Katara.

Sokka waved dejectedly while saying, “Hi, Aang. Thanks for coming.” Zhao stood up and motioned for the soldiers to close in on the bald boy. Zuko stayed where he was, not wanting to fight anyone. Aang sent snow at the soldiers to his left and then slammed his staff down on the ground, sending snow at Zhao. “Looking for me?” Aang asks Zhao.

Zuko’s eyes widened as he realized who the kid was. “You’re the Airbender? You’re the Avatar?” Zhao snarled at the kid. The villagers gasped, looking surprised, guess they didn’t know either. Zuko felt bad for the kid, he probably had a good reason to hide that from them.

“I’ve spent years preparing for this encounter,” Zhao told the boy. Which Zuko thinks is not right, he had spent a year. Not years training to beat the Avatar. “You’re just a child.” With that Zhao sent fire balls at the Avatar, who spinned his staff to dispel the flames. The fight got closer to the villagers who screamed in terror at the flames. Noticing this Aang held out his stick and yelled, “If I go with you, will you promise to leave everyone alone?”

Zhao froze for a moment before relaxing from his stance and nodding. Two soldiers quickly flanked Aang’s side and confiscated the staff. They held him by his upper arms and walked him towards the ramp. The girl, Katara, stepped forward. “No, Aang. Don’t do this!”

“Don't worry, Katara. It’ll be okay.” Aang told her, looking over his shoulder. Zhao started to walk up the ramp too, grabbing Zuko’s upper arm and dragging him along. “Take care of Appa for me until I get back.” Zuko winced as Zhao dug his nails into his skin at the comment. “Head a course for the Fire Nation!” He yelled as he entered behind the Avatar. “We’re going home.”

•<•>•<•>•

Zuko finally had Sozin in his arms after leaving him for too long in his opinion. “Oh who’s the cutest baby ever? That’s right you are, yes you are.” Zuko cooed at his sweet baby. He sat on their bed, crossed legged. Sozin had some fuzz growing on his head, not bald anymore. His amber eyes sparkled in the light above. His sweet little angel.

His head snapped up as the door slammed open. The Avatar, Aang, just burst through the door. “My staff!” He exclaimed. Oh right, his staff was next to the bed. Aang’s eyes then snapped to where Zuko sat. He yelped in surprise and quickly dashed to get his staff.

“You should hurry up, Avatar. My husband will be notified of your escape shortly.” Zuko told Aang with a smile. Aang blinked a few times in surprise before grinning and running towards the door. “Thank you! You have a cute baby!” Was all he heard before he rushed out the room.

Zuko saw soldiers chasing after him before silence, he burst into chuckles. Sozin picked up on his laughing and smiled brightly, trying to copy his mother.

“You know, Sozin. Why don’t you come with me to feed Gramma Sa Lah, Grandpa Revrak, and your Brother Oshu with me tomorrow?”

Sozin giggled and if Zuko heard communion on the deck, well, he didn’t.

Dear Azula,

I’m sorry to say that this letter isn’t about something good. I am writing to you to tell you that we have found the Avatar. The Avatar’s a child, younger than you. It makes me want to cry because we both know what will become of the Avatar.

I’ve managed to free the Avatar before we even got out of Southern waters. I know why Zhao wants to capture the Avatar. He plots to be the Fire Lord. I think we both know what will happen if he fulfills his plans.

I know we’ve been thinking about turning on Father but we have to accelerate those plans. Zhao can’t become Fire Lord.

I’m planning an escape in a month or two. I’ll be taking the prisoners with me, the ones I told you about.

I love you, take care of yourself.

Love, Zuko. Burn this.

Notes:

I hope you enjoyed this chapter! How we thinking about little Sozin? I’m trying to write in just how adorable he is along with Zuko’s ‘no babies are better than mines’ outlook.

Anyway! Have a good day and night!

Chapter Text

When Zuko told Sozin that Oshu was his brother he had been kidding. But now, seeing how Oshu was rambling on and on about protecting Sozin with his life, yeah...Oshu was his. Zuko brought a tray of rice and bread, along with pork and steam rolls. No one noticed the additions to the tray thankfully, or if they did they didn’t say anything to Zhao.

It was Zuko’s first time bringing Sozin in here, so it was their first introduction. Oshu was full of excitement for his baby, as was Revrak. Sa Lah did express her congratulations but gave Zuko a look full of grief alongside it. He knew what Sa Lah thought of the situation at least.

“And!! Oh! Oh! I’ll protect him from the river monsters! That way he won’t get dragged to sea!” Oshu told him as he pressed his body against the bars. He took a breather as he finally started to eat his share. Zuko smiled broadly at the little Alpha and shuffled a little closer to the bars. Sozin cooed in his arms and started to suck on his fingers. “You know I think Sozin would appreciate that very much. It seems he likes all of you already.” Zuko told him softly.

Revrak smiled at him through a piece of pork. “When you came in you said I was Grandpa Revrak. I’m not that old, you know.” He told Zuko. Zuko’s face immediately burned bright in embarrassment. “I’m only twenty-seven. Just cause you’re sixteen now doesn’t mean you’re so young. I do however accept being related to that little cute bundle. Even with his namesake.”

Zuko chuckled and ducked his head to eye Sozin. Who was starting to doze off. “I didn’t name him but he is a cutie. Maybe even cuter than you Oshu.” He joked as he raised his head. His eyes sparkling with mischief. Oshu gasped dramatically, placing a hand on his chest and falling down on his back. Sa Lah quickly shuffled over and her lap acted like a cushion for Oshu’s head.

“They are both cuties,” Sa Lah told Zuko with a teasing tone. “Now, Gramma Sa Lah thinks that Sozin is ready for a nap. Which also means Zuko will need a nap too. So say goodbye Oshu.” Zuko smiled softly and nodded gratefully towards Sa Lah. Oshu groaned and shit up quickly. “Bye Sozin. Bye Zuzu.”

Zuko turned his eyes back to Oshu. “I’ll see you later, okay Oshu? I might not be able to bring Sozin later but I’ll try. Take care of yourself in the meantime. I mean it.” With that Zuko stood up on his feet and bid farewell to Sa Lah and Revrak. As he was heading out the room with the tray he heard Oshu ask Revrak, “Why is Sozin so wrinkly?” That comment made Zuko snort in surprise and he had to quickly walk away. Sozin drifted completely off before they were even back to their room.

•<•>•<•>•

Zuko got a quick nap while Sozin slept in his cradle. He was only able to sleep for an hour before the door opening woke him up. Of course Sozin, the little guy, continued to sleep through that annoying ass door. With a small growl Zuko pushed himself up to confront whoever just barged in their room.

Zhao.

Of course it was Zhao. Why wouldn’t it be? “Wife. How are you?” Zuko’s brows furrowed. Okay..that’s weird. Zhao never asked how he was before, what was going on? He sat up straight on their bed and faced Zhao, who was standing at the edge of the bed. “Er- Good, Husband. I just got a quick nap with Sozin after feeding the prisoners. And you?” He tried for a smile but it fell a little dull.

Zhao sat down on the bed, his feet firmly planted on the ground while he twisted his upper body to face Zuko. A grin crept up his lips. “I’m so glad you asked, Wife.” It wasn’t long before his face broke out into a scowl. “Horrible!” He twisted completely around and back handed Zuko. “There’s no word on the Avatar! He must be a master of invading I swear. He’s island hopping faster than I can blink!”

Zuko, for his part, ducked his head and stayed silent. “I need you to do something for me. I fear it’s the only thing that can turn my mood around.” There it was, a cruel draw to his words. Zuko glanced up at the Alpha and plastered on Omega innocence. “What can I do Husband? I just want you to be happy.” Which wasn’t a total lie, Zhao was better when he was happy.

“Join me on deck with Sozin, wearing this.” He told Zuko before leaving the room. Zuko was confused until he realized that Zhao had placed down some clothing where he had sat moments ago. Ignoring his throbbing cheek, Zuko reached for the fabric and lifted it up to take a look.

Zuko felt dread pool in his stomach.

What.

The.

Fuck.

•<•>•<•>•

Zuko stood next to Zhao on the deck of the ship. Sozin in the crook of his arm, still asleep somehow. He could feel the stares from Zhao, and other Alphas. He never wanted to kill Zhao more, well besides when Sozin was born. That was because Zhao put Zuko in a dress. And what was Sulo supposed to do?! Refuse? Fat chance of that happening!

So here Zuko stood. In a dress. Fuck.

The dress was red, of course, it went to his just below his knees. There were no sleeves, only these weird straps that barely stayed on his shoulders. The fabric was thin and, ehm, breezy. On his right side was a slit going from his thigh to the end. The only thick part was the padding in his chest since his, er- top bits grew bigger with Sozin’s birth.

He even had fishnets on, which was very embarrassing. Thankfully he only had flats to wear and not something like heels. Although Zuko suspects that Zhao would like that very much. Speaking of which… “You look very lovely my Wife.” Zhao spoke from beside him. His arm creeped around him and held him against Zhao tightly.

“Thank you, Husband. If I may ask, why am I needed on deck?” Zuko held his tongue against asking about the dress, not wanting to cause an argument. Zhao sighed tiredly and rubbed Zuko’s arm, Sozin trapped between them. “We’re heading into port. I thought you would like to take Sozin shopping. Or whatever you Omegas do.” Zuko’s eyes twitched but he didn’t say anything against him. “Of course, thank you for this generous offer Alpha.”

A pleased sound escaped Zhao as he heard Zuko refer to him as Alpha. Sick prick. “We’ll be porting shortly, when you’re done shopping I wish for you to join me for some lunch.” Zhao told him as he turned his head to Zuko. Zuko smiled at Zhao and thanked him once more.

Zhao didn’t deserve it.

•<•>•<•>•

Sozin was now awake and cooing happily at the attention he was getting. A lot of the merchants Zuko came across were elders and apparently loved babies. He had been given some free things with his purchases which had freaked him out. Zuko did not want to take free things when he could pay for them, which is what he was trying to explain right now. “Seriously, keep it. I don’t want to take anything from you guys, more than I have.” He was starting to lose his patients.

The elderly man waved his cane in the air and smacked his lips aggressively. “You hear me now, young one! You’re going to take this toy and this basket. If I hear one more word out of you that isn’t accepting these items I will do something! Don’t know what, but I will.” Zuko groaned and Sozin giggled as he wrapped his little hands around Zuko’s hair. “You should just accept them, Turnan won’t accept no for an answer.” A passing Beta told him. Zuko groaned again and bowed his head.

He had already accepted many other things and the guards with him were paying the price. The three of them each held baskets, toys, blankets, and clothes. What were two more things right? “Okay. Okay. I’ll take them. But! I’m leaving some gold coins behind.” Before the man could object Zuko was already grabbing the basket and toy and slamming the gold down. By the time the elder blinked the path was clear of Zuko, Sozin, and his guards. Grumbling to himself Turnan added the gold to his profits and continued on selling.

Eventually Zuko managed to find Zhao. The Alpha immediately sent Zuko’s guards back to the ship with his purchases and set out to find a place to eat. It didn’t take long to find some place, seeing as the port was on a smaller scale. They got a table for the three of them shortly near the door, just in case.

The place was selling noodles and rice so Zuko quickly ordered some noodles with all sorts of meat in it. Zhao ordered rice with orange chicken and had somehow managed to scowl through the whole process of ordering. When they finally got their food, Sozin was placed in his lap, Zuko asked the question that was eating him alive. “What’s got you so upset dear? I thought this place was quite nice.” In order to drag out time Zuko took a bite of his food immediately after his question.

“Something’s off here. The people keep mumbling about themselves but whatever it is has them quite surprised.” Zhao told him with a frown. Zuko’s brows furrowed, he had been too focused on the gifts to notice anything amiss. Although now that Zhao was saying something Zuko noticed how at a table close by they were whispering amongst themselves. Whatever was being shared was apparently very shocking. “Like that?” He asked as he gestured to the table.

Zhao’s eyes zeroed in on them and he scowled. “Exactly like that.” With a hmm, Zuko stood up and handed Sozin to Zhao. Which he was not at all happy about. Zuko forced himself to focus and approached the table. They silenced themselves quickly at his approach but Zuko didn’t mind. “Hello, sorry, it’s just that I can’t help but notice that something is being spread like wildfire around the port. Do you know anything about it?” He blinked innocently and layered on a sweet voice.

One of the people, in the middle, smiled at him and gestured to the person next to him. The Alpha next to him huffed and leaned forward. “Okay, so, it’s been found out that the Avatar is in Kyoshi Island! Which is amazing! He’s so close to this port but I wouldn’t even dream of trying to go to Kyoshi Island.” There were laughs shared around the table and some back slaps, which thankfully didn’t transfer to Zuko. “Why wouldn’t you go?” He couldn’t help but ask.

The group shared a look between them before taking in Zuko’s outfit with wide eyes. “Oh- umm.. The island is protected by a water creature and I’ve heard from my brother’s friend’s cousin’s uncle that their warriors are an elite force.” The Alpha quickly added on, “Their not to be trifled with.”

With a quick thanks Zuko went back to his table and crumbled into his chair. Zhao looked at him expectantly and handed Sozin back to him stiffly. “The Avatar is on Kyoshi Island.”

•<•>•<•>•

Zuko found himself on a Komodo Rhino, his arms wrapped around Zhao’s waist, storming onto Kyoshi Island. He was also still in that stupid dress. Thankfully Sozin had been left with one of the Omegas on the ship. While Zuko didn’t like it, it was better than bringing Sozin with him.

They finally reached the village after a long walk with the Komodo Rhinos. Zhao singled for the other soldiers to stop their Komodo Rhinos. “Come out, Avatar. You can’t hide from me forever.” Zhao yelled into the empty street. The whole village looked void of life, only the houses that were in great condition gave away the fact that people lived here.

“Find him.” Zhao growled to the soldiers on either side of him. The soldiers obediently rode their Komodo Rhinos into the village. That’s when from above green and yellow figures descended on the soldiers. It looked like they used fans to disarm the soldiers swiftly. Zuko couldn’t help but think about how cool they were. Of course that was until one of the green people started to charge at Zhao and Zuko. When they got close enough Zhao stood up on the Komodo Rhino and shot a stream of fire at the person.

The person, who Zuko could now see was a girl with white makeup on with a green battle dress and yellow fans, launched at them before the fire could touch her. Zhao yanked the reins and made the Komodo Rhino’s tail slap the girl away. Zuko clenched his hands into the fabric of his dress as his thighs clenched down on the saddle to try to steady himself.

The girl landed on his side a bit away from them, spitting out sand. Zuko held his breath as Zhao sent fire at her downed form. He only released it once another person, in the same outfit, blocked the attack with their fans. The person kind of looked familiar. Suddenly Zuko and Zhao were being tackled to the ground by another person. The three people surrounded the Alpha and the Omega, holding their fans out intimidatingly.

Zhao kicked out fire at the three of them, making sure to not burn Zuko. Zuko quickly scrambled away and pressed himself tightly against the building’s porch they landed on. Zhao tussled with the person who saved the other girl for a bit before they fell on the ground. Zhao grabbed hold of Zuko’s upper arm and dragged him along with Zhao. They stood in the middle of the street in silence before Zhao spoke again.

“Nice try, Avatar, but these little girls can’t save you.” Zhao shouted into the now empty scorched street. Zuko was about to interrupt to tell his husband that these ‘little girls’ were apparently an elite force but he never got the chance to. “Hey, over here!” The high pitched voice of the Avatar, Aang, yelled from a few houses down.

There he stood, his staff in his right hand. Zhao didn’t hesitate. He sent many streams of fire at Aang, which ended up being directed upwards from Aang’s airbending. Aang spun his staff above his head and leaped over to Zhao and Zuko, landing not too far away. Zuko made eye contact with Aang and quickly shook his head. Trying to tell him without words to not fight Zhao.

Of course he didn’t listen, or didn’t understand and went to strike the air. Zhao swiped the staff away and Aang quickly moved away with his airbending. He landed next to some fans and picked those up with his airbending. Zuko quickly backed away, not wanting to join the fight. He was worried for the kid. Zhao growled and charged at the little Alpha, only to be blasted away through a house wall.

Aang stood there, hunched, stunned. Before dropping his hands with a sad look. Zuko sighed and quickly walked to retrieve Aang’s staff. He picked it off the ground and walked over to the kid. “Here you go Avatar, now be quick before my husband gets out of the wall.” Aang looked up at his voice and smiled a bit. He accepted his staff back and waved goodbye to him with a, “Bye Baby Lady!”

“Lady?!” Zuko shouted after the kid with a disgruntled snort. “I’ll show you lady,” he grumbled as he kicked the sand before going to check on Zhao. Zuko ignored the fires and the fighting behind him. He had to at least make sure Zhao wasn’t dead, which of course he sadly wasn’t.

“Where’d he go? Where’s the Avatar, Omega!” Zhao snarled once he found him and sat him up. Zuko sighed and rubbed his arm, acting sheepishly. “He got away. He sent one of those air blast things at me and I panicked. Oh it was so scary, I’m glad you’re okay though. He couldn’t have gotten far.” He probably laid on the ‘helpless Omega’ act on thick but right now he didn’t really care.

With a vicious snarl Zhao ripped himself from Zuko and stormed out of the rubble. “Of course you’re useless! Why do I keep bringing you along?” He asked himself. Zuko didn’t even pretend to be hurt by that, he was asking himself the same questions.

When Zhao stormed down the street, heading for his soldiers, they saw a white blob fly overhead of them. The Avatar’s transportation apparently. “Back to the ship!” Zhao shouted as he raced for his Komodo Rhino, Zuko in toe. “Don’t lose sight of them!”

Zuko clambered on the Komodo Rhino after Zhao and they were swiftly spreading towards the ocean. That’s when a black mass sprouted out of the ocean, towering over the Island. “What in Agni’s name is that?!” Zhao yelled in shock. Zuko smirked smugly. “That’s the sea creature I told you about. The Island’s Protector basically.” Water gushed out of the creature’s mouth and sprayed over the village behind them.

Zuko looked back and it confirmed what he thought, the fire went out with barely a sizzle. He smirked until he felt the water dump onto them. He spluttered indignantly and spat out some water with a muttered curse. He heard growls from Zhao and the soldiers as they made their way back to the ship, cold, wet, and defeated.

Chapter Text

Zuko sighed quietly as he heard Zhao loudly sharing his excitement of hearing the Avatar had visited a nearby village. Zhao always seemed to be lighting up like a kid at a Fire Festival when he got word of the Avatar. At this point Zhao should’ve just married Aang. Which made Zuko’s stomach turn at the idea. He would rather deal with Zhao than let Aang do it. Why did he even think that?

Anyway they were soon to arrive at the village, Senlin Village, as he soon found out. Zuko’s face twisted when he saw what Zhao was presenting to him. “Another dress?” He asked, trying not to seem bitter. Any attempt at a smile was sure to turn to a scowl so Zuko didn’t even try to. The dress this time was just above knee height, it looked flowy and thin. It had a deep V-neck and looked like it would show his newly big breasts. Thankfully there were sleeves on this dress though. “I think you would look divine in this one, Wife . A great one to wear for our..visit.” Zhao spoke with a smirk and laughed harshly before shoving it in his hands.

Zuko swallowed thinly. “Are there at least tights I can wear?” Although he doubted the answer was yes, which was confirmed by the shake of Zhao’s head. “Will you atleast leave while I change?” Again a shake of the head. Zuko was just glad that Sozin was with Imonu.

•<•>•<•>•

Dressed in the dress Zuko was standing outside of the house of the supposited leader’s house. Zhao made him sit with him on a Komodo rhino. The dress kept riding up to Zhao’s glee when he looked back. At least they were alone so no one could see it happening, the village was like a ghost town. The leader finally walked out of the house, seriously they sat there for an embarrassing long time. “Seen the Avatar lately?” Zhao sneered down at the man, swiftly jumping off and punching the man.

Zuko couldn’t help the grimace.

•<•>•<•>•

“Are you really planning on sailing into Fire Nation waters?” Zuko argued with Zhao, he should be scared but right now hot boiling rage fell on him. They were on deck, Sozin still with Imonu, other guards were around, Lee included. Zhao stared off into the distance, faint ships blocking the way. “When you married me you took up the banishment too!”

Zhao turned his head with a tight lipped frown. “If I get the Avatar then we’re not banished anymore are we? You get to go back to that sister of yours and I get your Father’s favour. That will lead me to become Fire Lord one day, you will be Fire Lady. Really you should be grateful.” Zuko gaped at him in surprise. “Are you serious?” Though it wasn’t a question.

Zhao turned his head back and got out his telescope. “There they are. Helmsman! Full steam ahead!” He shouted behind him. Zuko growled lowly to himself. He watched as Zhao ordered his men to light the ball and cut the rope holding the catapult back. The projectile flies towards the Avatar’s pet but it's blasted away. The blockade Zuko spotted finally appeared closer. “Zhao, we're still in Earth Kingdom water. If we turn around now they can’t arrest us,” Zuko pleaded with Zhao. “Please Alpha.” Zuko hated how easier it was to call him that.

Zhao stared down at him, a frown on his face. His hand cradled Zuko’s cheek and his thumb rubbed in a soothing way. Agni he hated this . “We have to do this Omega, I’m doing it for you. For us.” Zhao turned away from him, where his hand was burned Zuko. “Run the blockade!” He yelled towards the helmsman. Zhao charged away from him yelling out orders.

“You’re doing this for yourself,” Zuko mumbled, turning his head back to the blockade. Fireballs litter the sky from the blockade, all aimed at the Avatar’s pet. However one does hit their ship, Zuko stumbles a bit and Lee catches him. “Captain Zhao! The engines are damaged! We need to stop and make repairs!” One of the engineers of the ship ran out of the belly onto the deck. Zhao growled at the man, “Do not stop this ship.”

Zuko was distracted by Lee, thanking him, but a distant screaming jolted him. Snapping his head to the side he saw a body falling towards the ocean. “Oh no.” Zuko gasped out, it was the Avatar’s friend. Thankfully the Avatar’s pet reached him in time and Sokka got to safety.

“Omega!” Zhao screamed from behind him. Zuko broke away from Lee and walked towards Zhao. “What is it?” He asked. “We’re heading for a ‘collision’ course, but we can make it. I need you to go down and get your son. It wouldn’t do well for the heir to get hurt now would it?” Zuko wanted to punch Zhao. Holy Agni. The heir . Without a word Zuko whirled around and disappeared off the deck.

•<•>•<•>•

They arrived at a temple, Roku’s temple , not long after the sun started to set. “Was it safe to leave Sozin back on the ship, he’s been away from me too long.” Zuko asked Zhao. They were on a small ship, having separated from the big ship a while ago. One of the ships from the blockade had been following them but Zhao and Zuko used their smoke trail to separate.

Zhao placed his hand on the small of Zuko’s back, trying for ressasuring. At least that’s what he thinks Zhao is doing. “It will be fine, Wife. Now let us go catch a stray bird.” A smirk curled on his face. Zuko blinked at him in disbelief, “I can’t even firebend anymore.” Zhao frowned for a bit before shrugging and hurrying up the island. He scoffed and quickly caught up to his husband. “If only I still had my duo blades,” He muttered.

When they made it into the temple it was eerily quiet. No one was in sight. Well this is underwhelming . Zuko thought. Zhao scowled in front of him before marching down a hallway. Zuko rolled his eyes and trailed after him while keeping listening intently. Many people think that Omegas are useless but there is a skill that they possess which no one else has. Sensitive hearing.

“--fore he contacts Avatar Roku!” Zuko heard faintly. He quickly grabbed Zhao’s arm, stopping the angry Alpha. He’s about to speak when Zuko holds a finger to his lips, still trying to listen. After a bit he swiftly, and quietly, drags Zhao up some stairs to the right. They make it up to see the Avatar behind a column, not paying any mind to the two.

“We’ve been tricked!” One of the Fire Sage’s yell before an animal launches at their head. The girl, Katara, pulls one of the sage’s tunic over his head while Sokka completely lifts one’s outfit to cover their body. Zhao distracts Zuko from his observation with a kiss on his head before grabbing the Avatar. The boy squeaks with surprise and stares at the both of them with wide eyes. Zuko can’t help the guilty look from taking over his face.

“Aang! Now’s your chance!” The girl yells from beyond the column. Zhao detains Aang by pinning his arms behind him. He steps out of the blocked view, Zuko following after schooling his face. “The Avatar’s coming with me!” He shouts, the siblings must have loosened their grip in shock, along with an apparent rogue sage. The other sages fight against the hold and swiftly switch their positions. “Close the doors! Now!” He growls at them.

Zhao turns around with Aang and marches them to the stairs. Zuko sees him look over his shoulder at where his friends are most likely being chained to a column. In a movement that he can barely process, Aang breaks free of Zhao and sends him down the stairs. The boy hesitates at Zuko and runs past him towards Katars and Sokka. “Go!” The girl shouts at him, turning her head to the door. Zuko watches this unfold with a small smile, Aang redirects himself and makes it past the doors.

A bright blue light encases the door, blinding everyone. Zuko snaps his head towards the stairs, having made it a few feet away. He heard Zhao coming back up and seeing that the sages hadn’t even looked his way made him quickly think of a plan. When Zhao made it to the top step he saw Zuko struggling to get off the ground. “What happened, Omega?” He snapped at him, helping Zuko up roughly. Zuko clutched to the man and pretended to shake. “Aa- The Avatar knocked me down. He made it past the doors,” Zuko then placed the back of his hand to his forehead. “It was so scary.”

Zuko even shut his eyes. Overall he thought it was a great performance. Zhao huffed and broke away from him to yell at the sages. Zuko rolled his eyes and turned away from the scene. Only to see the siblings staring right at him. The boy looked like he was trying not to laugh and the girl stared at Zuko with a blank look. “What?” He asked defensively, crossing his arms over his chest. Sokka started to giggle but tried to muffle in by dipping his head down. Katara continued to stare. “I’ve never seen someone that bad at acting,” She dead panned. Zuko bristled defensively, “That was a great act! The best I've ever done!”

“If that was the best one, I’m scared to see the rest.” Sokka spoke with wheezes in between. “Omega!” A voice snapped from behind him. The two fell silent while Zuko slipped on a ‘mask’ and walked towards Zhao. “Yes Husband?” He asked softly, placing a hand on his arm. The sage that helped the kids was kneeling before them, hands tied behind his back. “Why did you help the Avatar?” Zhao spat out at the man. That’s when Zuko realized who it was. Shyu. They had met when he was younger and at the wedding. He was always kind and told him stories of how great and powerful the Avatar was. “Because it was once the sages’ duty. It is still our duty.” The words were spoken proudly but sadly.

“I should just kill you,” Zhao growled with a fist of fire raised. Zuko was quick to step in front of him. “Zhao! Shyu was just confused,” He spoke with urgency, his words coming out quick. “Right Shyu?” Zuko turned towards the man with desperation in his voice and eyes. Shyu stared at Zuko with sorrow. “I’m sorry Prince Zuko but I made my choice.” Zuko whined lowly as tears filled his eyes.

A sudden clapping made them all jump and turn towards the stairs. “What a moving and heartfelt performance. I’m certain the Fire Lord will understand, when you explain why you betrayed him.” Oh Agni

The fire sages placed their palms together, bowing sharply at the waist. “Princess Azula.”

Oh Agni .

Notes:

Hey sorry for the very long delay. This whole year I was like, "Oh I'm not doing anything right now I can work on the next chapter!", I would then proceed to read other fan fics.

Anyway!

Hope you have an amazing day/week! <3

P.S. I'll try to get back to a sorta normal schedule but no promises! :D

Chapter 8: Chapter Eight

Summary:

Zuko talks to Azula after three years. Zhao and Zuko hunt the Avatar down with the help of pirates. Even the creepy ones.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Zuko stared in shock as he watched his baby sister stop a few feet away from them. She’s gotten bigger . That’s the first thing he notes. The shock dulling his other emotions. “Detain Zhao,” Azula told two of the men behind her. Six guards in total. “Leave Zuko alone.” Was quickly snapped at them when they hesitated next to Zhao.

He watched his husband get detained, arms locked behind his back, with a detached reaction. “Why are you just standing there Omega! Do something.” Zhao snarled. Zuko tore his gaze away from the man and faced Azula once more. “What do you expect me to do against six highly trained guards and my prodigy sister?” Then with a meaningful edge to his voice he said, “It’s not like I can bend anymore.” He saw Azula’s eye twitch before she finally breached the air between them.

“The Avatar must be inside. Stay here, keep an eye on the prisoners. All of them.” With that she gently grabbed his arm and both of them walked further into the temple to have some privacy. Out of the corner of Zuko’s eye he saw the chained siblings staring after them while Zhao shouted. Finally, they were out of view.

“Zuzu.”

Her voice broke . Zuko stumbled slightly in his haste to capture her in a hug. “Lala,” His voice shook but he tried to hold it together for her. He held her by the shoulders while stepping back to get a good look at her. “Oh how grown you’ve gotten.” Zuko smiled at her softly and brushed some of hair out of her face.

Azula had lost her baby fat. Her face now sharp and deadly, it fit her. Her eyes, once wide, now were narrower and piercing. Azula’s brown locks were now black. Her hair style was mostly the same though, still combed to perfection and with two locks in the front. “You’re so beautiful Lala.” He said before blushing in embarrassment, “Not that you were any less pretty when we were kids!”

She only looked amused, eyes watery. “Mama, I’m not mad. I know you know I’m always striking.” Mama . Zuko’s heart constricted. “I love you Zuko.” Then she stepped away subtly wiping her eyes. “Are you okay? I know you tell me over the letters that you are but..” There she was. That fiercely protective glint in her eyes was already forming. Zuko sighed, long and suffering, point on of course. “I am. I swear.” He added as she huffed in disbelief.

Then like she was seeing it for the first time she laughed. “Is that a dress!” Of course. That damn dress. Zuko hadn’t had the opportunity to take it off, all though if he did he suspected Zhao would have killed him. “This is my lovely Husbands’ idea. Picked it out and everything.” Azula’s face soured at the mention of Zhao. “Are you…are you going to leave soon?” She asked.

“I-” He paused, swallowing. “I can’t yet. I need to gather Sozin’s things and Oshu, Sa Lah, and Revrak need to get out too. I need time to plan and…and gather my thoughts.”

“Okay, okay.” Azula then gathered herself, fixing her hair. “I need to act like I’m after the Avatar too. Father doesn’t believe in any of you to get him. But who would trust Zhao with anything?” She growled softly at the end. Zuko chuckled and kissed her forehead, causing her to melt a bit.

“I’ll stay back, and if Zhao tries to go after me it’s okay.” Zuko broke away from her and started the walk back to the doors. Azula quickly took the lead to try and maintain her image. Upon arriving back they saw Zhao was trying to flip the guard holding him. Very unsuccessfully. Fighting a snarl, Zuko stood closer to the siblings. “Circle the door’s perimeter. Be prepared to fire.” Azula cooly told the guards not detaining Zhao, and Shyu by extension.

Zuko heard the siblings talking in hushed voices behind him. “How’s Aang gonna make it out of this?” Katara asked, worried. He heard Sokka asking her, “How are we gonna make it out of this?” Which was a far point. That’s when the light started. The door glowed a bright white and streams of smoke came from it. “Oh Agni.” Zuko whispered, he was starting to say that a lot this day.

The door started to open and the smoke intensified. “Fire!” Azula yelled, a pair of glowing eyes piercing the smoke. Zuko’s breath caught in his throat as the guards and Azula blasted fire at the figure. That’s when the figure became clear. Avatar Roku . “Isn’t he dead?” He asked, turning to a shocked Katara and Sokka. That at least cleared the shock, if only to give him another deadpan look. From both of them this time.

Oh. That’s lava .

They had gotten onto the boat and reached their ship once again. Zuko watched as the Avatar flew away from the temple, and them. Zhao suddenly growled and struck Zuko across the cheek. “Useless Bitch!” He pushed him to the ground while holding his neck in a tight grip. Zuko gasped for breath, only a wheeze coming out. “Can’t even hold your ground against that stupid sister of yours.” Finally Zuko was released and Zhao stormed away while barking orders.

Zuko coughed harshly and rubbed his throat. A pair of boots walked into his line of sight, “I can escort you down to your chambers. Sozin should be in there taking a nap.” Lee. That was Lee’s voice. He offered a hand down and Zuko gladly took it. “Thank you, Lee.” Zuko told him softly, his voice wrecked.

It took a while longer than it should have to get down to his chambers. Lee left him not long after that with a bow. There he was. Sozin, sleeping peacefully in his cradle. “Oh my baby, so beautiful huh?” Zuko cooed at him.

It had been two full moons since Sozin was born and he was growing heavier. But it was nothing that Zuko couldn’t handle, Sozin is his baby afterall. “Always sleeping, eh?”

Sozin made a small noise as his eyes cracked open. “Oh baby, Mama’s sorry. Go back to sleep.” Zuko told him softly. Sozin gurgled happily up at him and opened and closed his hands. Zuko put on a heavy, dramatic sigh and scooped him up. Zuko made sure to support his head and body before placing Sozin on his tummy on top of the bed.

He laid in front of Sozin and smiled across at him. “Do you want some fresh air? I bet I can make your Daddy make port for you,” Zuko’s voice failed him near the end yet he tried to push through. Sozin’s head raised and he cooed.

“Lets let him cool down first alright Sozin?”

  • <•>•<•>•

Zhao was in his planning room. Zuko just got done feeding Sozin and was feeling a bit tired but he was determined to get off the ship. “Husband, I was hoping that we could make port soon.” Zuko asked Zhao, he was holding Sozin close to his sore chest. Zhao turned his attention from the map on the round table to Zuko. “Whatever for? We have everything we need currently. Besides the Avatar ,” He added with a small growl.

Zuko suppressed a flinch when that spiteful gaze held on him. “I was thinking about getting some things for Sozin. He is a growing boy afterall.” Agni let this work . He needed off this ship. Zhao turned back to the table in silence for a while before turning to a soldier in the corner of the room. “Go to the helmsman. Tell him to direct our course West.” The soldier ran off without a word, probably glad to leave.

Zuko hid a smile at how easily Zhao crumbled when he mentioned the heir

  • <•>•<•>•

Sozin loved the wind blowing into his face, although Zuko made sure to block him from the majority of it. His little bald head got cold easily. Zhao had unfortunately come with them so the freedom felt a bit tight. Like his scar felt. Some passersbys gave them weird, constricted, looks but that was most likely because of the bruises he felt forming on his face and neck. His scar probably didn’t help either.

Zuko was considering between two different outfits when Zhao suddenly dragged him away. The outfit in his hand fell to the floor in his surprise while the hold on Sozin tightened. “Woah- What’s uh…” Zuko tried to form a sentence but he was quickly dragged on a ship. Zhao turned his head into Zuko’s right side and whispered, “This looks like a pirate ship. There’s bound to be great treasures aboard.”

He got a look at the Alpha and hissed. “You brought us on a pirate ship?! Sozin is two moons old!” Two men that stood further into the belly of the ship glanced back but shrugged it off. Zhao ignored him and looked at the first thing to catch his greedy eyes. A monkey statue. It was creepy, and it had red gem eyes. “That thing is not coming into our den.” Zuko murmured. Sozin made a noise at him which Zuko took for agreement.

“We lost the Water Tribe girl and the little bald monk she was traveling with.” One of the men said to the other. Zhao’s head snapped up and Zuko caught a glimpse of a feral grin. “This monk, did he have an arrow on his head?”

Zuko’s tired eyes landed on Sozin, looks like they were going on a trip. Again.

  • <•>•<•>•

Zhao, Zuko, and a few guards separated from the ship on a boat. They were quickly tailed by the pirate ship. Zuko still had Sozin with him, even though he knew it could be risky, but they had been apart for so long already. Besides, Zuko thought rationally, Sozin would be hungry soon . He sat down near the edge of the boat, running his hand not holding Sozin through the water. The pirate ship was on this side unfortunately, but if he moved he had to be near Zhao. Zuko did not want to anger him again.

“What’s a pretty thing like you doing here?” A man from the pirate ship asked, leering down at them. Pretty thing? By Agni did they not see how he looked? Did they not see how Zuko was married and had a child? Zuko tried to not grimace and stay polite, but it was hard. “I’m accompanying my Husband .” Zuko told him pointedly.

The guy’s face shifted a bit but remained undeterred. “He give ye’ those bruises?” Zuko glanced away from him and shifted Sozin to be in a more comfortable position. Zuko slowly retracted his hand from the water, but kept it away from Sozin. “I could treat ya better. Maybe those bruises could be from bed,” The guy suggested with a disgusting little tongue wiggle.

“I’m afraid I’ll have to decline your offer, Mr..?” Zuko trailed off expectantly. “Joh, but you can call me yours.” Okay. Agni, why ? He turned his head away fully to hide his grimace. “Omega! Get over here,” Zhao called from across the boat.

Zuko quickly stood up and walked at an acceptable pace to Zhao. Thank Agni . Zuko would take Zhao over the pirate creep, at least he was predictable. Zhao curled his arm around Zuko’s waist and tucked him into his side. Sozin murmured a bit but otherwise remained sleeping. “What is it?” Zuko whispered into Zhao’s shoulder.

“I saw that filthy pirate trying to woo you,” Zhao huffed in his ear. Zuko was immediately filled with fear. “I don’t want him! I swear to Agni. I- I-” Zhao only looked amused though. “I know you wouldn’t have, Wife.”

Zuko sagged a bit with relief, “I know I messed up the other day but I would never betray you.” A lie . But Zhao didn’t need to know that. He felt the hand on his waist tighten and with a wince he looked up at Zhao. His eyes were clouded with anger. Zuko gulped, the fear steadily returning.

“I’m sorry Alpha,” Zuko told him softly. To hopefully get Zhao to release the pressure Zuko shifted his face into his neck. Zuko pressed a kiss to his neck and breathed in his scent. An awful scent that Zuko had yet to get used to. He stunk like burning bloody dust. “It’s fine Omega. I just didn’t want to be reminded of… our failure. We’ll catch him this time.”

The sun had fallen long ago by the time they reached a river. The guy, who Zuko learned was the Captain, yelled across the way. “Shouldn’t we stop to search the woods?” Joh stood near him and smiled crookedly at Zuko. He pressed more firmly into Zhao’s side, no matter how much it made him want to throw up. Zhao spared him a glance before responding, “We don’t need to stop. They stole a waterbending scroll, right?”

The Pirate captain hummed in confirmation, staring off into the trees passing. “Then they’ll be on the water,” Zhao told him before snapping his teeth at Joh’s wandering look. “Keep your boy in check.” The Captain between Joh and Zuko before smirking and saying nothing.

Zhao growled at them, looking like he was going to jump on the ship. Zuko was a bit surprised by this seeing as Zhao literally choked him out the other day. The Captain’s smile dropped as he gripped his weapon, taking a step forward. Angry alpha pheromones clouded the space between them, waking Sozin.

“—if I just, ow! Stupid scroll!” A feminine voice further up interrupted them. Katara . Zhao quietly commanded the men to stop the boat and let the Pirate ship go further ahead. “Okay Katara, shift your weight through the stances.” Splashes could be heard through the bushes. Zhao, Zuko, and the men all got off the boat and snuck through the foliage.

Sozin gurgled at Zuko which caused Zhao to sharply hiss at him. Which was so unfair. Zhao’s hiss was literally louder than Sozin’s gurgle. “No! Let go of me!” Zuko could see the scene just up ahead. Katara had been grabbed by a pirate but had quickly bent water into the man’s face. She runs away but unfortunately she chose the direction they were in. Shit . Zhao was quick to grab her by the wrists.

“I’ll save you from the pirates,” Zhao grumbled at her. Zuko stared at him incredulously and shifted Sozin. She was quickly dragged to a nearby tree and tied by one of the guards. Zhao circled the tree with a scowl, “Tell me where he is and I won’t hurt you or your brother.” Zuko was surprised he even catched on to that, with his head being so thick.

Katara’s face shifted to rage. “Go ju-” A sharp cry from Sozin interrupted her. The both of them turned towards Zuko who just sighed tiredly. “Sorry, feeding time. Please continue, I’ll just be…over…in the bushes.” Zuko quickly fled into the trees, making sure none of the pirates followed him. Especially Joh.

Sozin was still wailing to the skies above. “It’s okay baby,” Zuko softly told him while pulling his robe slightly down. He guided Sozin to his very sore nipples with a grim expression on his face. “I’m too young for this,” Zuko whined out when Sozin very eagerly sucked on his nipple.

Zuko could hear loud talking from the shore but ignored it in favor of cupping Sozin’s head. “Look at yah, so sweet smelling,” A familiar voice spoke from behind. “Joh, I would appreciate you leaving us be. As you can see, we’re busy.” Zuko turned his head and stared at the man. The pirate was much bigger than he looked on the ship, probably more bulkier and taller than Zhao.

Joh approached him with a big grin on his face. Sozin chose that moment to suck harshly which caused Zuko to wince and lose concentration. He felt hands grip his arms tightly with a head resting on his shoulder. Zuko growled and tried to escape his hold. Sozin, having finished feeding, released his nipple. Great timing kid . Zuko thought as Joh’s eyes locked on his chest. A hunger filled them.

Zuko quickly pulled his robe up and burped his son. He ignored the disappointment on the pirate’s face and started to walk back to shore. Sozin lightly squeezed his fingers and gurgled at them with delight. Zuko smiled softly and kissed Sozin’s forehead.

  • <•>•<•>•

The sun was coming up when John with another pirate came dragging Aang and Sokka. They stopped where the other pirates gathered, opposite of Zhao’s men. Sozin started to drift off again a while ago and was now asleep. Again. Why do babies sleep so much

They had their arms tied together, their hands bound too. Sokka was struggling with the ropes, Joh standing close. “Nice work.” Zhao told the captain. Zuko hid a smirk at how disgruntled he sounded. “Aang, this is all my fault.” Katara said from their side, still bound to the tree. Aang shook his head so violently that Zuko thought it would fall off. “No Katara, it isn’t.”

“It kind of is,” Zuko said from his spot next to Zhao. The girl gave him a nasty glare that had him pressing more into Zhao. He ignored how Katara’s eyes shifted from his bruised face to his neck. Zuko soothed himself by kissing Sozin’s head.

Zhao nodded to the Captain. “Give me the boy.” The Captain smirked and put his hands on his hips, “ You give us the scroll.” Zuko rolled his eyes at the Alphas. “You’re really gonna hand over the Avatar for a stupid piece of parchment?” Sokka piped up. Zuko felt himself agreeing but honestly that might be more for his own sake. Not getting hit would be great.

Zhao growled and snapped his teeth. “Don’t listen to him, he’s trying to turn us against each other!” The Captain ignored him to turn to Aang. “Your friend is the Avatar?” Sokka grinned wolfishly, “Sure is, and I’ll bet he’ll fetch a lot more on the black market than that fancy scroll.” Zuko felt Zhao basically vibrating in anger. Uh oh. Zuko shifted Sozin to his right arm and placed his left on Zhao’s arm. “Calm down, he wants your anger.”

He ignored him and took a step forward. “Shut your mouth, you Water Tribe peasant!” Aang looked at Sokka and glared hard. “Yeah, Sokka, you really should shut your mouth.” It surprised no one when he didn’t shut his mouth and continued talking. “I’m just sayin’ it’s bad business sense. Think how much the Fire Lord would pay for the Avatar. You guys would be set for life.” Zuko’s will to live just died on this sand.

The Captain smirked and turned back to Zhao. “Keep the scroll; we can buy a hundred with the reward we’ll get for the kid.” The pirates turned to leave and Zhao just lost it. At least Joh is leaving . “You’ll regret breaking a deal with me.” Zhao and a few soldiers blasted fire at the pirates who quickly turned back. The pirate who was talking to the Captain at port threw these tiny balls at them. Turns out they were smoke bombs, great . “This isn’t good for you Sozin,” Zuko told the sleeping baby softly as he backed away from the smoke. He stood closer to Katara who watched him warily.

“Oh my Agni!” Zuko screeched when he saw a weird monkey run down the tree. The animal made quick work of the rope holding Katara and just stared at Zuko. “Oh my Agni, Oh my Agni . Just go. Please.” Katara smirked before turning to the monkey. “Thanks, Momo. I owe you a bushel of apples.” The ani- Momo flies away and Katara spares him a look before running into the smoke.

Zuko sees Zhao and the Captain in the corner of his eye before he is jerked to the side. An ungodly shriek rips out of him in surprise, waking Sozin. “Come on Princess,” Joh . How many times would he get the jump on him? It hurt his heart. The hand on his arm tightens when he tries to break free. Joh glares at him like he’s the one being kidnapped.

“Let go of me! Can’t you take a hint, big guy?” Zuko snarled, Sozin starting to cry again. “Can you? I’m trying to save your ass.” Joh stared him down as if daring him to object. Zuko stared at him confused as he swiftly kissed Sozin’s head and scented him. “What are you talking about?! You’ve been creeping on me this whole time.”

“So what? I’m allowed to have fun once and a while. But seriously those bruises are the real deal. If you come with me I could protect you and your baby from guys like those. And we could have fun.” Joh added at the end, a bit desperate. Zuko sighed and dropped his gaze to Sozin. Who had started to suck on his hand, trying to soothe himself. “I have to save some people on the ship, I can’t leave them.” He thought of what Oshu, Revrak, and Sa Lah would think. If he just left them to rot and eventually pass away. Alone. Dirty. Starved. He wouldn’t let that happen.

Joh’s jaw tightened and his eyes narrowed. Zuko turned away from him and paused. “Your ship is sailing away.” Joh immediately started to run away, yelling at his fellow pirates. Zuko trailed after him but stopped at an amused Zhao. That quickly dissipated when the pirates hijacked their own boat. “Hey! That’s my boat!” Zhao ran after them while yelling at his men.

Zuko couldn’t help but laugh at the scene, a confused Sozin quickly joining in.

Chapter Text

“Where are we?” Zuko asked, turning to Zhao. It had been a week of sailing in one direction and now an island was in sight. Zhao smiled, an actual real smile. “This is the island where Azulon’s first grand military victories took place. The ruins of Taku are here but also where Pohuai Stronghold is. That’s where we’re headed.”

Zuko’s eyes widened. “ Pohuai ?” This was where Fire Nation troops trained before being deployed into battle. It was where the Yuyan Archers trained, the most elite and highly skilled Fire Nation archers.. Supplies are constantly being moved over thousands of miles of rail lines. Zhao placed his hand on Zuko’s waist and tugged him into his side. “Yep. We’ll be staying here for a while. All of us,” Zhao added while staring over his shoulder. There were commotions and running around heard from behind him which made him crack a smile. Zhao turned back to him and kissed his brow, Zuko tried to not tense up.

“Shinu has kindly granted us sanctuary. I will be trying to get the Yuyan Archers to help us with the Avatar.” Zhao continued while staring at the incoming shore line. Zuko’s brows furrowed before staring up at Zhao. “What about the prisoners? Will they join us at the Stronghold?” It was now Zhao’s turn to look confused. “The prisoners?”

Zuko stared at him for the longest time, silence was present all around them. “The prisoners …who I feed? Everyday .” Recognition filled Zhao’s eyes while he nodded along. “Right them .. I guess I can arrange for them to be placed in the cells in the Stronghold. Of course you can still feed them if you want.” Zuko nodded tightly and excused himself. He swiftly fled the deck and headed into the belly.

Sozin was with one the older Omegas on board, he thinks their name was like Tora. Or something like that. Zuko made his way to maybe Tora’s quarters with her husband. “Hey uh, I’m here to take Sozin back.” The Omega was laying on their bed kinda sorta spread out . “Oh my Agni! Um.” At least Tora had the decency to look embarrassed. Zuko grabbed Sozin from the spot, on the floor , and fled the room. “Oh my Agni, Sozin. I’m not leaving you with anyone ever again.” Sozin gripped his finger lightly and cooed at him. “What were you doing on the floor huh? You a bug?” Zuko made a face at Sozin while getting closer to his face. Sozin tapped his cheeks and made a laughter-like noise.

They were approaching the door to the cells now and Zuko had to shift Sozin to one arm. He opened the door and was immediately greeted with yelling. “He has Sozin! Zuzu! Do you see Su Lah? Baby Zuzu is here!” Soft laughter echoed in the hall of empty cells.

“Really? I had no clue, Oshu.” Su Lah responded while smiling at Zuko and Sozin. Revrak greeted Zuko softly, sitting in the corner of the cell. His dark brown hair had gotten longer, well they all had longer hair. Su Lah’s light brown hair and Oshu’s brown hair were very greasy. After all, there was no water or bathing in ‘prison.’ No one was stopping Oshu’s green eyes from shining bright though.

“Hey guys, I know I didn’t bring any food with me..but it’s for good reason.” Zuko sat down on his legs and leaned against the bars, keeping Sozin from touching them. “You’re moving to a different cell. One in Pohuai Stronghold, apparently we’ll be staying there for some time while Zhao figures things out.” The smiles slowly faded from their faces. “Are we going to….” Su Lah trailed off while glancing at Oshu.

Zuko quickly shook his head and gripped Su Lah’s hand. He didn’t care about the dirt and grim at that moment. “ Agni no . I would never let that happen to you guys. I will get us out of there, it just might take time.” Oshu lit up and grabbed at their clasped hands. “You mean you’re ready!? We finally can go?” Zuko smiled down at him and nodded his head. Tears blurred his vision as he released Su Lah to hold Oshu through the bars. “Yeah, Yeah we can finally leave.”

Revrak looked doubtful but refused to ruin the mood by disagreeing. Su Lah looked close to crying but held it together. “Thank you Zuzu! I will protect you and Sozin for ever and ever and ever ! I promise!” Oshu eagerly told Zuko while bouncing up and down. Sozin gurgled from on his lap and reached for Oshu. Zuko lightly tugged him away with the arm still around Sozin. “I love you guys, I won’t leave you here to rot.”

Zuko gathered himself before standing up. “I’m going to go get the key and then come back to help you in the Stronghold. Okay?” Su Lah nodded at him and took Oshu to where Revrak lay. Sozin looked over Zuko’s shoulder on the way out, sucking his fingers. Zuko kissed the back of his head soothingly. “It’s okay Sozin. We’ll see them soon, won’t we?”

Opening the door, Zuko tucked Sozin into his chest. “Okay baby boy, let’s head to daddy’s planning room.” They walked the twisting, cold, halls until the familiar door was seen. When Zuko walked in the room he was met with a few soldiers. They weren’t even doing anything, just dozing. Zuko cleared his throat which snapped them into action.

One soldier, who had a spear in hand, dropped it in surprise. It rattled noisily on the meta ground which made Sozin gurgle in distress. “Well, I think you should be glad I wasn’t my husband. He would have torn you a new one.” Zuko might be the one to do it if they made Sozin fuss again. It took too long to get him settled on a good day. Zuko’s eyebags were feeling it.

The soldiers relaxed at his voice but rightfully still held an edge. Zuko smiled lightheartedly and turned to the nearest soldier. “Do you know where the key to the prison cells is?” The soldier's face tightened a bit. “Why?” Zuko raised a brow at him and tilted his face slightly.

“Well, first off I rather don’t see how that is your business. Second, we’re moving locations. Pohuai Stronghold will be our residence for a while. Now where’s the key?” The soldier tensed and walked over the table, reaching under it. “A secret compartment? Really?” Zuko whispered to Sozin who had settled. He lifted up his head to look at Zuko and cooed. Zuko accepted the key from the man and swiftly left.

Back at the cells Zuko twisted the key in the key, hearing a satisfying click . The faces of his friends filled with tears. “We should be close to the island now. You might need to walk for a long time, the Stronghold is in the middle of the island.” Zuko opened the squeaky door and took a hold of Oshu’s hand. “Do you think you walk with me to the deck? “ Zuko squatted down to look him in the eyes. Oshu’s eyes lit up and he nodded eagerly. “Can I hold Sozin?”

Zuko bit his lip and glanced at Sozin. Su Lah’s hand gripped Oshu’s shoulder from behind. “I don’t think that’s a good idea sweetheart. You have to walk a further way than you’re used to, you might fall and hurt the baby.”

“I wouldn’t hurt Sozi! I’m a big boy, I can walk,” Oshu yelled up at Su Lah. Revrak approached from the back of the cell and light shoved them ahead. “I don’t know about you guys but I want to go .” Zuko laughed softly and stood up.

“Well lets get out of this room first okay?” Zuko opened the door for them to walk out of. He watched as they hesitated a bit before walking past the threshold. They looked all over the metal hallway, their green and blue eyes taking everything in.

They had no shoes, having been taken a long time ago, so they must have been cold. Zuko made a mental note to get them some either before escaping or after. Sozin was finally drifting off, so hopefully he would stay asleep the whole way to the Stronghold.

“Take it easy on the stairs, okay?” Zuko told them, worried. Oshu sent him a big grin, “I’ll be fine Zuzu!” Su Lah sighed while shaking her head.

“I’ll hold on to him, Zuko.”

Zuko watched them go up the stairs. They looked like a baby taking their first steps. Now that he was thinking about it, in seven full moons Sozin would be around walking age. He smiled down at his baby, sleeping soundly in his arms.

He walked up behind Revrak, making sure to keep a firm grip on his arm. Revrak had small beads of sweat gathering on his forehead. He tiredly nodded his head at Zuko in thanks.

Zuko sent him a small smile and they reached the deck after a few minutes. Oshu was tucked into Su Lah whose gaze had hardened the second they were on deck. Revrak stood neck to them, Zuko having to release him on the last step.

The soldiers stared at them with disdain but tried to go about their business. “Wife! Come here, we’re starting to leave.” Zhao called from across the deck, near the landing gear. He was mounted on a Komodo Rhino alongside others.

Zuko turned to his fam -friends to whisper to them. “Don’t let the soldiers get to you, please don’t react. You’ll be one of the last unloaded.” Su Lah nodded determinedly and gripped Oshu a little tighter.

He looked down a bit before turning away and walking to Zhao. Zhao reached a hand down and Zuko accepted it. It was a struggle last time he tried getting on it. At least he wasn’t in a dress this time around. He murmured a thank you to Zhao and clutched to him one handed. “Please ride carefully this time, baby on board.” Zuko told him, whispering in his ear.

Zhao turned his head to Sozin and just stared for a while. Then he hummed and turned back to the front. Okay? What a weird interaction.

  • <•>•<•>•

The sun had been the highest in the sky before they started their trek. It was now sundown. The sun barely was seen through the trees once they reached the Stronghold. Many soldiers, including who Zuko thinks is Shinu, stood in front of it.

Zuko looked behind him but all he saw were rows of soldiers and no glance at his friends. He quickly turned back around when they came to a stop. Zhao dismounted and held out a hand for Zuko, who took it gratefully. He shifted his hold to Zuko’s waist before meeting Shinu in the middle.

Shinu had lighter brown hair, some gray weaving in and out of his top-not. Surprisingly his sideburns were even worse than Zhao’s. They pointed to his nose and were really shaggy. “Zhao. Welcome to Pohuai, my soldiers will be showing your crew where to stay.” Shinu glanced at Zuko and briefly licked his lips. “Will your wife be staying with you or separate ?”

Zhao’s hand tightened almost painfully while he stared down at the man. “I’m afraid I’ll be staying with my Wife for the duration of my stay. How about your wife, will she be joining us tonight?” Shinu’s face tightened and his eyes grew sharper. Zhao smirked at him and leaned in slightly. “Oh, right. Your wife left you.” Zuko’s eyes widened as he realized the jab Zhao just did. To…defend him? Zuko hid a small pleased smile by tucking his head into Zhao’s side.

“Well then. Let’s get you settled.” Shinu practically growled out. He looked over his shoulder at his soldiers. “Show these men to their courters!” Zuko watched as small groups of the crew followed after different men. Eventually his friends were brought up by two soldiers. “Where are the cells? We will be temporarily placing them here,” Zhao explained to the man. Zuko glanced at their exhausted faces, Oshu only being kept standing by Su Lah’s discreet hold on him.

Shinu nodded and beckoned a returning soldier to show them to the cells. “Place them in cell A3.” Zhao looked pleased with the arrangements and finally they were walking into the stronghold. Zuko tugged on his sleeve to get his attention before talking. “Our things are on the Komodo Rhino, aren’t we going to grab them?” Zhao patted his waist with his wrapped arm with amusement. “That’s what servants are for. The other omegas and betas will take care of it.”

Zuko frowned at the ground but let Zhao lead him through the twisting halls. A thought occurred to him though. “How come you know where we’re going?”

Zhao hummed and turned sharply, dragging him along. “I was here before. A year before we married, I had a specific room down this hall. In my letters with Shinu I was informed that I would be staying in the same one. With you.” Zuko considered that he had been here before, had he tried to get the archers then too?

“Here we are,” Zhao announced as he stopped at a big door. He opened it effortlessly. The room had a big bed across the door, in the middle of the room. There was a big closet and a rug to combat the cold floor. “What about Sozin? Will the cradle be brought here too?” Zuko asked while glancing at the recently sleeping baby.

“I’ll have it brought as soon as I can. Now why don’t you rest here with the heir. I must take care of business.” Zhao told him, gesturing to the bed with his free hand. Zuko stared at him with confusion. “You’re already trying to get Shinu to give up the archers? We just arrived. Why don’t you relax, have some fun?”

Zhao stared at him for a long moment, a dark look in his eyes. Then he swiftly shook his head. “No. I must do it now. Better now than later.” With that his arm retreated and so did he. Sozin mumbled in his sleep, a certain smell burst from the baby. Zuko’s eyes watered and he quickly clamped his nose close with his fingers. “Oh my Agni Sozin. Is that fart or poop? Why must you do this to your poor Mommy.”

After a quick check it was found to just be gas, thank Agni for that. “Lets lay down for now baby,” Zuko spoke softly to the stinky sleepy baby as he sat on the bed. He pressed his back against the pillows and kissed Sozin’s head lightly. “After your nap why don’t we find out where brother, gramma, and grandpa are, huh?”

  • <•>•<•>•

Finding the cell wasn’t hard at all, it was a big room but had multiple chains. They were spread across the room, Oshu chained to the floor on the far left. Su Lah was chained on the floor near the middle, and Revrak was chained on the floor on the far right. “Wow, they really spread ya’ll out. Why do you have chains on both your foot and hand Su Lah?” Zuko asked, now noticing the extra chain on her.

Su Lah grinned at him as he approached, a tray balanced on his free hand. “Oh you know how it goes, you kill a couple soldiers and suddenly you have to be restrained extra carefully.” Zuko chuckled lightly and shifted Sozin around as he crouched down in front of Su Lah. With her free hand Su Lah took a piece of bread and, —after putting it in her lap— she scooped up a bit of rice.

“I’m sorry about the portions, they give slightly more food here but… I wasn’t able to smuggle any more food for you. They watched me like a hawk the whole time.” Zuko told them softly, giving Revrak then Oshu their portions. It didn’t escape his notice that they saved a bigger portion for Oshu.

Zuko sat near Oshu for some time, watching them eat in silence. Sozin was sucking on his hand while leaning on his stomach. “In the upcoming days I am going to try and get us out of here. But first I have to make Zhao focus on something else.” With that Zuko kissed Oshu’s dirty, greasy, hair and left. He had to find a way to get Shinu to hand over the archers. He had to.

  • <•>•<•>•

“Ah, there you are, Omega.” Zhao’s voice said when Zuko came back from the cell. Zuko looked up at Zhao expectantly. “We have been invited to eat dinner with Shinu and some higher Yuchan Archers. Our clothes have been sorted out and I expect you to wear a nice dress.” Zhao told him while looking him up and down. Zuko’s jaw tensed but he conceded to the order.

“I can hold the heir while you change. His crib has yet to arrive.” Zhao told him while taking Sozin from his arms. Zuko tried to not growl, Zhao wouldn’t hurt Sozin. He wouldn’t. Steeling himself, Zuko opened the closet. He felt a bit sickened at the sheer amount of dresses in the closet. Looking through them he thought about what Zhao would like to see him in. Finally selecting a medium sized dress, probably knee high.

With Zhao watching, Zuko made quick work of changing out of his traveling robes into the dress. It had loose straps that fell down his shoulders, leaving them bare. Zhao’s eyes took it in with vigour. The dress was a deep red and the material was silky. “Is this one okay Husband?” Zuko asked while looking down sheepishly. It was always better to act in these situations.

Zhao smirked and approached him, leaning in. “You’re perfect for tonight,” His eyes then shifted from his neck to a small box on the bed. Zhao held Sozin awkwardly as he lifted the box towards Zuko. He looked at Zuko expectantly. Zhao got him something? Opening the box he was met with a gold necklace. The chain was gold and at the end was a golden coin. It was Fire Nation currency and it was mostly rectangular in shape with a long slit running from its base to slightly below its top. It was also the biggest coin in the Fire Nation.

Even though he didn’t trust or like Zhao remotely he knew the importance of a gift like this. Zuko’s hands shook as he took the necklace from the box. He looked at Zhao briefly before slipping it on. It was a bit heavy but at the end of the day it didn’t matter. Taking a steading breath Zuko wrapped his arm lightly around the two of them. Zuko looked into Zhao’s eyes before closing the distance between them.

After a year of doing this it got easier but it still hurt him to act like this. However all that mattered was that Zhao looked pleased and he was given Sozin back. “Now, shall we go?” Zhao asked, putting his elbow out like he was a gentleman. Zuko closed his eyes briefly, adjusting Sozin to be comfortable. Then he slipped his hand into the crook of Zhao’s elbow.

They made their way down the hall to where the dinner would take place. Zuko was glad Zhao knew where he was going because Zuko definitely did not. “Be on your best behavior. Just like dinner with your father.” Zhao whispered to him before he opened one of the double doors they stopped at. There was a long table in the middle of the room, Shinu was at the head of the table on the right. There was a man on Shinu’s right and a woman across from the man. The man and woman smelled like alphas and had red markings around their eyes.

Shinu stood up and gestured to the last remaining chairs. “Take a seat, take a seat. The food should be here soon.” They walked to the closest chair, near the woman. Zhao retreated his arm to pull the chair back and Zuko gracefully sat down, crossing his legs under the table after being pushed in. Sozin grabbed at Zuko’s long hair, yanking it a bit. He tried to not wince or break character at the harsh treatment to his hair. Zhao sat across from him just as servants burst through the doors with trays and trays of food.

After the food was delivered they silently tucked into the plates. Sozin had been fed on the way to the Stronghold so hopefully he wouldn’t have to..eat—drink?— anytime soon. Zhao cleared his throat in the middle of the meal, chewing stopped as everyone looked his way. “Shinu. This meal is quite enjoyable, I would hate to take advantage of this silence. However, I have hope that you can lend me your archers to help me capture the Avatar.” Zuko hid a smile by taking another bite of food. How subtle Zhao was acting.

Shinu’s eyes narrowed, looking between Zhao and Zuko before smirking. “I would be glad to give you my archers,” A pause, then.. “Of course I would need to be compensated. Perhaps a night with your Wife would suffice. I’ve never laid with royalty before.” Zuko’s fingers tightened on his chopsticks. His eyes cut to Zhao hoping that he wouldn’t agree.

His heart sank a bit as it seemed like Zhao was considering it. “I can see how that would work. However I can pay you differently. You see, with the capture of the Avatar I will be rewarded higher status. I plan to become the new Fire Lord, I can reward you with higher status too and as many riches as you desire.”

Zuko exhaled in relief subtly, kissing Sozin’s head swiftly. Shinu scowled at the beginning of the talk but it lessened as it went on. The man and woman looked between each other and briefly looked at Shinu. “I suppose that would work.” Shinu spoke carefully, staring at Zuko wistfully. Zuko cleared his throat, Zhao’s eyes immediately finding his. Zuko looked at their empty plates meaningfully and thankfully Zhao dabbed his mouth and stood. “Seeing as we have finished eating and business, my wife and I will retire with our son.”

Zuko tried to ignore how that was the first time Sozin was acknowledged as their son. Not the heir . Zuko stood up and placed his hand back onto Zhao’s elbow

This was going to be a long week . Zuko thought as Sozin played with the gold necklace.

Notes:

I was going to add more, with Aang's capture and a little something else. BUT. I realized it had been a long time between this chapter and the last one, so I ended it early.

I hope you guys have a good week and take care of yourselves!

Chapter Text

Zuko sighed heavily, finally being left alone. It took a few days but Zhao had lessened the leash on him. Zhao had been keeping him at his side, barely letting him feed his friends, after the dinner. Shinu’s words had shaken something in his brain or something. Making him realize that not only did he have a royal wife, he had to keep Zuko his wife. What a shocker marriage is.

Zuko couldn’t quite hate him for it since Shinu had made attempts to get close to him. That look stayed in his eyes but he stayed a safe distance away. Yet this morning Zhao relented and told him that he could go alone if he pleased. Zuko had just finished feeding Sozin so he was a bit tired and sore. After burping him, Sozin went down for the count leaving Zuko to his thoughts.

They had to leave soon. It was getting dangerous the longer they stayed in Zhao’s grasp. He had been getting more aggressive the longer they stayed here, irritated as the archers haven’t been giving it their all. Apparently the Archers don’t like Zhao, Zuko related.

The dresses had made an appearance during their time here. Unfortunately. But maybe with Zhao taking control of the Archers he will be too busy dictating what he wears. Also would help them escape, of course that’s the main concern… But the dresses are a big deal too… Hard choices out there

With the Archers being prepared to hunt down a child, Zuko had time to strategize. He needed to find a way out that would draw less attention, hopefully. There had to be an exit that was less guarded or fortified. It would also depend on the time of the day they escape, day and night have different guarding methods. More at night, a bit less in the morning. Midday was when the Archers trained in the courtyard, behind the walls. That meant less security up above that could shoot arrows with deadly precision.

In a few days Shinu predicted that the Archers would be ready to start hunting down the Avatar. Wherever Aang was, how would they know if Aang was anywhere near them? Maybe a letter telling them where Aang was at the time of the letter. But depending on where the letter was coming from and how fast the hawk flies, the time can vary.

They wouldn’t be able to pin point his exact location. When they had been, Aang had been like a wayward child— Which he was . Almost bouncy-like on the map, zig-zags echoed on the shore. Maybe that had changed, he didn’t know. But they had to be at Roku’s temple for a reason. And obviously Roku was dead. Yep . Zuko knew that. He just had a relapse in history knowledge for a moment.

It totally didn’t need to be explained to him by Su Lah. Nope.

A knock jolted him from his thoughts. Who ? Zuko frowned slightly but got off the bed to answer the door. Cracking it open revealed Shinu, which made Zuko try to slam it back close. Key word, try. A foot wiggled its way in and with a pained grunt the door stopped. “Wait! I’m not here to do anything, promise. Just talk.” His voice spoke from the crack.

Zuko shot his eyes and banged his head on the metal door. They were guests. He had to play nice, he had to. The end goal was all that mattered. With a sigh Zuko opened the door fully. “What is it that you want to talk about?” He kept a hand on the door and blocked Shinu’s way in. Although if he really wanted to, Shinu could burst his way in.

He watched as Shinu took a deep breath, looking over Zuko’s shoulder, searching for something. “I was wondering if you could talk to Zhao for me.” Zuko’s eyebrow raised. Shinu smirked briefly. “My Archers are a hairbreath away from stuffing your Husband full of arrows. He’s too controlling and demanding. Perhaps you could speak with him and get him to lessen up on them.”

Zuko exhaled through his nose. Like he could make that man listen. “Fine. What do I get out of it?” Shinu took a step closer, his bitter scent filling his nose.

“Well. Could take me for a spin, eh? I see he isn’t around right now, could have some fun.” Shinu smirked and traced Zuko’s chin with his fingers. This man . Zuko thought as he firmly stepped away. He held up his right hand, the one with his ring, “I apologize but as you can see, I’m married.”

The smirk vanished from his face and in its place was a snarl. “Just get it done,” He snapped before storming away. Zuko gladly closed the door after that show. “Fucking Alphas,” He whispered while his head fell back on the door.

•<•>•<•>•

He found Zhao in the courtyard, who was barking commands at the Archers. True to Shinu’s word, it looked like they were about to shoot Zhao. Zuko really wasn’t against that but this wasn’t the best time to become a widow. Especially near Shinu. It would also interfere with Azula’s plans.

Zuko took a deep breath and walked straight over to Zhao, ignoring the arrows flying around him. As soon as his hand touched Zhao’s arm the shouting stopped. Granted his head whipped over and flames escaped his closed fist, down by his side. “Alpha,” Zuko spoke softly. The harsh look softened a bit but he still stayed tense. “What are you doing here, Omega.”

Zuko stepped closer and pressed a kiss to his chin. “Shinu came to find me.” Hands gripped his upper arm tightly, a growl filled the space between them. “What.” Zhao spat. Zuko tried to not cringe in disgust as the spit hit his face. “He didn’t do anything,” Zuko quickly told him. “Shinu asked me to talk to you about how you’re training the Archers.”

Zhao stepped back and released his hold. “Nothing’s wrong with my training.”

“He’s worried that they would sooner harm you then listen to more of your yelling,” Zuko whispered to him. The growling started again but Zuko was quicker. “Leave them alone for the day, okay? You can…You can take it out on me.” Zhao stopped short and stared, hard, at him. A hand grips his chin lightly. A kiss landed on his forehead.

“I would never hurt you without reason. Maybe if you want me to hurt you so badly…” Zhao trailed off with a smirk. Zuko exhaled shakily, staring into his eyes.

“Let’s take this to bed,” Zhao whispered to him. Zuko was tugged along as he tried to ignore the stares from the Archers. Can’t wait… Fuck.

•<•>•<•>•

Sozin’s cries were what woke him. He had fallen asleep after Zhao was done with their…’lovemaking.’ He had in fact made it rough, bruises lingered on his arms, hips, and neck. Not just from bites, nope, Zhao choked him out. Thankfully Zhao seemed less angry and went down easily. Sozin was unfortunately in the room during this yet surprisingly he didn’t wake.

Of course he chose to now. At the top of his lungs. “Shut it up!” Zhao snapped when Zuko quickly sprang off the bed. It . Oh Agni, give me strength . Zuko cradled Sozin in his arms, rocking him gently. “It’s okay baby, Mama’s here. I’m here.” He spoke softly as he tried to shush him. Zhao’s scent filled the room in his anger. A growl soon followed.

Zuko snapped his head over to him, overwhelmed. “You aren’t helping!” He yelled. Zhao was quick to get on his feet. The slap hurt but it wasn’t unexpected, he was asking for it. Sozin’s cries got louder. “Don’t speak to me like that, you ungrateful little brat!” Zhao snarled.

He tried to step away but Zhao’s hand gripped his shoulders. “I take care of you, I feed you, I watch out for you. Even when you’re on some little disobedient strike! I make sure that my soldiers don’t bend you over where you stand. Trust me, they wish too! Maybe Shinu would like a piece too, perhaps he could go first.” Zhao’s words stabbed him in the chest. He should just stand down and apologize. He should.

But…It’s his dignity that’s being threatened. Zuko placed Sozin but in his crib slowly, making sure Zhao could see his intentions. Zhao released his hold so Zuko could do it, putting Sozin out of harm's way. Without warning Zuko whirled around and punched Zhao. It was weak, a year of not eating properly—To keep his omegan figure—, paired with the loss of flames making it so.

But Zhao reared back as if his strength from a year ago returned. “You bitch,” Zhao spat. He backhanded Zuko and threw him back into the bed. They grappled against each other, trying to gain the upperhand. Zuko was finally pinned fully on the bed, Zhao’s strength aiding him. He shoved his face into Zuko’s space, fury burning bright.

“If you don’t learn how to behave I’ll have to take drastic measures, won’t I?” Zhao sneered down at him. Where his hands pinned him down it started to get hot. Zuko quickly turned his head, baring his neck, fearing he would be burned soon. “I’m sorry, Alpha. Please, it was my mistake. I’ll never do it again.”

He felt Zhao’s nose burrow into his neck as Zuko exhaled shakily. “Don’t do it again.” With that he got off Zuko, staring down at him. “I’m leaving, stay here and silence that child!” He shouted before storming out the door. Zuko was quick to get up and take Sozin from the cradle. He tucked Sozin into his chest and cried silently. “It’s okay, it’s okay. He’s gone, the mean man is gone. Mama’s got you now, I got you.”

It took a while but the cries dwindled. The pain from the forming bruises didn’t.

•<•>•<•>•

Su Lah gasped when she saw him. “What did that Dipstick do to you?!” Zuko ducked his head in shame as he continued ahead. “It doesn’t matter Su Lah, just take your portion.” He told her as he crouched down with the tray. It was filled more than the first time, Zuko having been able to add to it when they turned away.

Her hand gently took hold of his chin, turning his face side to side. She growled softly as she saw the bruises. They have developed in the time it took to settle Sozin and the time it was meal time. Zuko extracted himself from the hold and made his way over to Revrak. His eyes were searching, probably to look for more.

Zuko had changed into a robe with long flowing sleeves. He made sure to cover everything below the shoulders. The only ones visible were the ones on his neck and face. Dark splotches covered his cheek alongside his eye. The handprints on his neck and fingerprints on his chin were a darker color now too. Fresh. Throbbing

“Did he hurt you anywhere else Zuko?” Revrak asked him quietly, but his voice just echoed. Zuko hesitantly nodded, swiftly heading to Oshu once Revrak had his food. “It’s fine, he just got angry when Sozin started to cry.” He hated how much worry was in Oshu’s eyes. It pained him. Oshu should only look happy now.

“Does it hurt Zuzu?” Oshu asked softly. Zuko quickly shook his head, lying to him in this situation would be better. He looked on the verge of sobbing. “It looks worse than it really is Oshu, I’m fine.” He turned away with the empty tray, meeting Su Lah’s eyes meaningfully. She seemed unhappy but nodded sharply. They wouldn’t tell Oshu the truth

Zuko cleared his throat shakily and turned his head to the door. “We should be able to leave soon. Zhao is always with the Archers nowadays and the soldiers train midday. If I plan carefully we should slip right by.” That seemed to lift their moods somewhat, but the worry still lingered. “I’ll be back later, promise.” With that Zuko retreated, not meeting any of their eyes.

A sigh escaped him as he leaned against the now closed prison door. He couldn’t let them down, not when freedom was so close. He had to get the timing right…

•<•>•<•>•

“Quickly!” A rough voice shouts throughout the hall. Zuko’s head snaps up at the voice. “Bring him to the room!” Was that Zhao? Rubbing his eyes briefly Zuko peaked his head out of the door. He had retired to their room after feeding his friends, cuddling close to Sozin as they napped. What was so urgent

There were a few soldiers dragging a full net between them as they marched down the hall. Zhao was behind them grinning widely. Opening the door fully Zuko stepped out, touching his arm briefly. Zhao glanced at him, his grin never breaking. “What’s happening?” Zuko quietly asked, trying not to ruin his mood.

Zhao yanked him along as he walked, Zuko looked back at the door before going along with him. “The Avatar has been captured. By me, of course with the Archers help.” Zhao told him triumphantly. Zuko’s eyes widened and his steps faltered. “What?” He whispered.

How?! How were they able to find him in the first place? Surely Aang wasn’t stupid enough to go near one of the strongest Fire Nation builds, right? Why would he anyway? What reason did he have to? Oh no. Aang’s in the net . Zuko realized. Being dragged like dirt under their shoes. “Husband, I have to tend to Sozin.” He told him before turning away, knocking the hand off his arm in the process. Zhao grumbled under his breath but otherwise let him go.

Zuko all but ran back to their room, Sozin still sleeping. They had to leave now, with Aang . Zuko grabbed a bag he got at a market before arriving here, and started filling it with clothes. He avoided the dresses, mainly packing the robes and Sozin’s small clothes. He also packed some of Sozin’s toys and blankets but otherwise kept it light. Hopefully they would find a store to buy clothes for his friends, their clothing has all but disintegrated.

He would have to wait to get Aang out, he would have to play it smart. He couldn’t bend and his duo swords were taken from him a year ago. Oh how much he misses those beauties. But it wasn’t like he could use them even if they were here, too weak from disuse of muscles. Zuko slipped the bag over his shoulder and carefully picked Sozin up. Zuko made sure to cradle him so that he wouldn’t wake up.

He quickly walked through the halls, entering a small room. This held the keys, they were hanging on a hook, dusty. No one really used the keys here since it was so secure. So it lay in an unassuming room, easily overlooked. Zuko took the right key off the hook and fled to the prison with his friends. No one was in the halls and Zuko had to hurry.

“Zuko!” Oshu exclaimed as he entered. Su Lah’s eyes widened as she took in the bag and his hurried state. “Are we leaving?” She quickly asked, tears gathering in her eyes. Zuko held up the key in answer as he started to tug on the chains. Once the key slipped in the lock the chains fell in a useless puddle under her. Su Lah hugged him tightly and stood up shakily.

Zuko made quick work of Oshu’s and Revrak’s chains. “Before we escape, they got Aang. The uh, Avatar. We need to get him too.” Su Lah and Revrak shared looks but Oshu was excited at helping the Avatar. Sozin shifted in his sleep, murmuring softly. Zuko’s eyes filled with determination. “I know we’re risking our freedom doing this, but we have to. He’s just a kid.” That won Su Lah over.

They were quick but silent as they walked down the hall. Zuko knew that Zhao had been preparing a room for Aang since they got here. He even showed it to Zuko in his excitement. They stopped behind the corner, four guards were outside the chamber. Zuko signaled for them to stay here and passed the bag to Revrak.

He walked up to them timidly, drawing attention. “Can we help you Prince Zuko?” One of the asked, eyeing the bruises littering his skin. Zuko ducked his head, trying to seem like he was gathering courage. “Zhao would like to see you all, he told me it was urgent. He should be out in the courtyard, but be careful. His victory did nothing to quell his anger.” The other guards took in the bruises and after a brief hesitation they walked down the opposite hallway, away from his friends.

They walked out after they were fully gone from sight, Su Lah grinned. “Your acting seems to have gotten better.” Zuko frowned at her before frogs croaking came out from under the door. Oshu squeaked before Revrak’s hand covered his mouth. Zuko stared at the frogs for a moment before they all entered the room. “Baby Lady!” Aang exclaims when he sees him. Before he takes in the bruises with concern. “You don’t look okay.. Oh, what are you doing here? Are you rescuing me?”

Zuko smiles softly at him and holds up the key. For some reason one key can unlock the majority of the chains. These ones being no different. Once the chains are dropped Aang hugs him gently. That’s when he notices the others. “Oh! Hi, I’m Aang!” He smiles brightly at them like he wasn’t just captured.

Oshu grinned back and waved fast, “I’m Oshu.” Zuko shook his head fondly, children . He cleared his throat, efficiently gaining everyone's attention. “The guards will soon realize Zhao didn’t need them and alert everyone. We have to be quick and move now.” They had no time to be smart about their escape, Zuko just hoped they could walk out the gates. They started to swiftly go down the hallway, only stopping once because of Aang’s yelling about frog-sucking. Zuko quickly dragged him along before they could slow to a complete stop.

They were silent as they left out a side door, the other options a sewer with would be bad for Sozin and Oshu. They tried to seem normal as they walked over to a stray wagon. Zuko quickly urged them into the wagon as he flagged down a Komodo Rhino to lead it.

Zuko’s hand was shaking as he strapped the animal to the wagon. Sozin was starting to wake up, it would only take one cry to draw attention to them. After securing the Komodo Rhino and checking on the newly made passengers, he hoped on. “Zuko!” Shit. That was Zhao’s voice. Without thinking he urged the Komodo Rhino into a sprint, at the gates.

“Don’t let him escape! Close the gates immediately!” Zhao shouted at the soldiers, flames peeking out of his fists. They made it past the first gate, two more to go. It wasn’t easy. Soldiers started to throw spears at the wagon, nearly hitting Zuko himself. He felt more than saw Aang airbending at them. Zhao’s angry shouting filled the court.

Come on . Zuko thought as he made the animal go faster, the gates slowly closing. Please . They made it past the second one. “Omega! Get back here!” The angry shouts of the crazed man followed them closely, most likely running after them. The gate was almost closed. Oh Agni .

“Aang!” Zuko desperately yelled.

“——oh, how foolish.”

Zuko shook his head lightly, unfurling from around Sozin. Safe, Sozin was safe . A boot kicked his side harshly. Oh, right…

Zuko wasn’t.

Notes:

I was thinking of writing more but I thought it would be funnier to end like that instead! :D Aang still doesn't know Zuko's name, yay!

I hope you have a good week!

Chapter Text

The kick rolled Zuko over with its force. Sozin was crying loudly and when trying to look for the others, he was unable to locate them. Another kick was delivered, this time to his leg. Zuko whined in pain and dragged his eyes over to his attacker. Zhao. Of course.

The gate had closed before the Komodo Rhino could reach it, causing it to change direction quickly. But since they were so close to the gate, the wagon slammed into it. The shockwave caused the Komodo Rhino to tumble, which sent Zuko flying. Zhao must have caught up not too shortly after that.

Zuko glared at the man, holding Sozin closer. Zhao was snarling down at them, snapping at his soldiers to check the wagon. He was harshly pulled off the ground, nails digging deep into his arms. “What were you even thinking?!” Zhao growled, shoving his face into his space. Behind him he heard struggles, the soldiers detaining his friends no doubt.

Zuko willed himself to not flinch back, growling in return. “Go eat coals!” The slap didn’t surprise him, in fact it only enraged him. Zhao stepped back as hands from behind grabbed at him. Zuko struggled the best he could while weakened, and with Sozin in his arms. He was soon forced on to his knees, snarls escaped him as he twisted and turned.

Zhao growled at him and ripped Sozin from his arms. Zuko screamed and tried to launch at him. Sozin was full on wailing now. Zhao grimaced and shoved Sozin into a random soldier’s arm. This bitch. Agni, give me strength. He thought as his now free arms were forced behind his back. “I’ll kill you! I’ll fucking kill you!” Zuko yelled at the Alpha, feeling feral with his baby, not safe.

“Let us go!” Aang pleaded with the soldiers holding him. “I’m the Avatar, please.” Beside him Revrak’s eyes were cloudy, distant. “That’s why that won’t let you go kid,” He told Aang softly, sighing. Oshu’s eyes were welling up with tears, but he stubbornly didn’t let them fall. Su Lah’s eyes were filled with hatred, her eyes could probably start a fire.

Zhao huffed harshly, scowling at them. “I can still turn you in to the Fire Lord, but you,” He stared down at the struggling Omega with anger. Zuko stared right back, his arm getting loose for a second before being detained once again. “I should just kill you. I have the heir, that’s all I need. The Fire Lord will let me in with him, and he won’t even know your name.” Zuko tried to lunge forward, breaking free for a moment before being held down again.

“He won’t know yours you fucker!” Zuko shouts. Zhao snarled and grabbed his throat tightly. Immediately shouts and growls could be heard from the side. Su Lah, in the struggle to escape, got lifted in the air, kicking and screaming. Aang’s eyes were so wide they could have fallen out. Revrak jolted forward, but couldn’t do much in his state. Ultimately, it was Oshu who ended up breaking free.

Zuko’s head swam slightly from the lack of oxygen. The bruising grip on his throat felt like a shackle. One that had been there for too long, even before the wedding. “Let go of Zuko, you ash maker!” He heard faintly. The hand disappeared as quick as it came, Zuko gasped in air quickly. Relief hit him before dread came at the scene in front of him. Oshu had rammed Zhao. Zuko couldn’t even comprehend how his starving skinny kid did that. But it worked, maybe out of surprise more than pain.

“You Agni damned prison rats!” Zhao roared, punching Oshu. Zuko’s vision went red from rage. How dare this man hurt his kids. How dare he harm his friends. How dare he hurt his family. With an enraged shout Zuko broke free from the hands, lunging at Zhao. The hands never reached him in time to pull him back, Zhao was knocked to the floor with surprising ease.

Spotting a dagger on Zhao’s belt he swiftly grabbed it. The dagger was raised to Zhao’s neck in an instant. It pressed against the skin hard, a warning. Zuko glared down at the man, barely able to stop himself from cutting into him. “I told you I would kill you, yes?” Zuko snapped his head up, staring down everyone. They had all froze, conflicted.

“Open the gate! Release them.” He yelled at the frozen soldiers. Shinu stood not too far away and Zuko couldn’t stop himself from snarling at him. When no one moved Zuko pressed the blade deeper in the skin, drawing blood. “Now!” He snapped.

In a flurry of movements his friends were released and the gate was slowly opening. Zuko stood up with Zhao, the blade snugly fit to his neck. Zuko gestured for Su Lah to take Sozin, Oshu sticking to his back firmly. Only once Sozin was safely in her arms, and Zuko checked for Revrak and Aang, did they start walking backwards.

Zhao chose to stay silent, smartly, for the dagger would’ve cut him. But nothing stopped the rageful scent from rolling off him. Zuko heard him growl and so he got real close to his ear. “If they follow us, if they try to harm us, I will kill you. You better pray to Agni that they don’t. Sozin is mine. Got it? You’ll never have him, and you’ll never have me.” He harshly whispered in his ear.

Zuko then turned his attention to the soldiers, still in the stronghold walls. “Don’t follow us! Or I’ll kill him, I swear to Agni I will.” He shouted at them, noticing how some shuffled forward. “Don’t even bother with the Archers. I would hate to become a widow so soon.” Zuko saw how Shinu did a small, barely noticeable, signal with his hand. This bastard.

“Don’t believe me Shinu? That’s fine.” Zuko told him, a cruel smile coming to his lips. They had made it past the gate, now all they needed was to get away. With swift movements the dagger slid across Zhao’s throat, blood gushing out. He heard shouts of alarm but ignored them as he pushed Zhao away from him. Zuko took Oshu’s hand in his own and ran into the treeline. He heard the others following, even as an arrow hit a tree near them.

He didn’t look behind them, didn’t want to see if Zhao made it or not. Zuko noticed how Aang, though shaken up, directed the arrows away from them. Eventually the flood of arrows stopped and so did the shouts of the soldiers. They reached a swamp by the time they got tired. “Hey! I know this place, the frogs I need are here!” Aang told them excitedly as he bolted from the dirty water.

Zuko silently took Sozin back, squeezing Oshu’s hand reassuringly. They were all quiet, even Sozin, taking in what just happened. Revrak still looked lost but seemed a bit more there. The bag was still on him thankfully. Su Lah placed her hand on Zuko’s arm supportantly. “What now?” Zuko whispered to her, throat aching.

If she was going to respond then Aang’s excitement overpowered her thought process. “I think I got enough frogs!” He bounced over to them, smiling. It was surprising what Aang could withstand. Zuko tightly smiled back at him, the movement tugging on his face bruises. Oshu took a step forward and frowned at him. “What do you need frogs for?”

Aang, who was busy stuffing frozen frogs in his clothes, frowned worriedly. “My friends are sick, the crazy herbalist lady told me all I needed were frozen wood frogs. I hope they're doing alright.” Then, as if struck, Aang jumped and stared at them with wide eyes. “You should come with me, we can get you away from here faster than they can catch up.” Zuko looked at Su Lah and Revrak hesitantly, waiting for their answer.

They looked between each other, Revrak’s eyes gaining some clarity. Su Lah turned her head to Zuko with a small smile. “It's your decision Zuko, we go where you go.” Next to her Revrak was nodding slowly. Zuko’s eyes widened, his mouth agape. They would risk their freedom to stay with him?

Oshu squeezed his hand, making him look down at him. “Please,” Oshu whispered while staring up at him with watery eyes. Zuko bit his lip, looking between him and Sozin. Tearing his eyes away from them Zuko stared into Aang’s eyes. The kid looked trustworthy, his eyes held no malience. So it was easy. Accepting the offer.

He had to keep them all safe anyhow.

•<•>•<•>•

They had been walking for a while —not as long as it took to get to the swamp— when they finally stumbled upon Aang’s camp. It was a bunch of ruins, but inside was Aang’s white beast. Sokka and Katara were in sleeping bags leaning against the beast. Zuko watched as Aang shoved the frozen frogs in their mouths, telling them to suck on ‘em.

Zuko and the others stopped near the beginning of the ruined room. The beast had lifted its head and stared at them, hard. Trying to decide if they were trustworthy or not. Eventually they lay their head down with a huff. Zuko felt a relieved breath escape him. The walk had tired him out, his family especially.

The walk had given him time to think about what he did. Was Zhao gone? Did he live? Why did Zuko even do that to him? The stress of what was going on and the pain of failing them must have gotten to him. Zuko was never really the violent type though. He talked back, sure, but he never tried to harm someone intentionally.

Aang gestured for them to come in, an exhausted smile painted on his face. They carefully walked forward, staying an appropriate distance for Aang and his friends. Zuko noticed how Sokka and Katara’s faces were flushed and how they didn’t seem to know what was happening around them. Aang gave them a confused look at the distance but otherwise didn’t comment.

They sat down on the floor, warm despite only part of the roof being intact. Zuko sat cross legged with Oshu sitting to his left. Sozin grunted in his sleep as Zuko positioned him better. Su Lah settled on his right, holding Revrek’s hand comfortably. Revrek’s eyes are just a bit cloudy still, finally recognizing his surroundings. Freedom.

In the rush to leave Zuko didn’t think to grab anything to sleep on. They were going to crash soon, probably, but Zuko hoped they didn’t mind. With a quiet question to Su Lah he was reassured that they didn’t mind. Although that was only because they have slept on cold metal for years. Not really the greatest thing.

The sun was starting to set but Zuko couldn’t help but worry about the soldiers finding them. Surely some were distracted with Zhao, but the others…They could be on their way here right now. Scouring the forest and already thinking of ways to execute them. When they find them they could burn them to a crisp, or break all their bones. Even drown them. His thoughts were cut off when across from them the siblings started to spit out the frogs.

Zuko watched amused as Sokka licked the beast’s fur in an attempt to get the taste off. Oshu was less quiet with his amusement and started to laugh. Secretly, Zuko was glad Oshu felt good enough to laugh. He, however, didn’t want to draw attention to them so quickly. Last time they met Katara had been tied to a tree and Zuko didn’t do anything to help. Granted what could he do?

Oshu stopped laughing once their gazes looked over them in shock. “Made new friends Aang?” Sokka asked once he stopped hacking out a lung. Aang looked sheepish as he explained to his friends the events that transpired at Pohuai. Zuko felt himself zoning out as he leaned lightly against Su Lah. He didn’t want to hear what he did again. Instead he nuzzled Su Lah’s brown locks and sighed.

Zuko noticed how at a certain part in the story the siblings stared at him intensely. He vaguely saw them take in the stake of him, turning his head into Su Lah’s neck. He didn’t want to see anyone right now. Didn’t want to see how they reacted. Zuko drew Sozin closer and shut his eyes. They needed to leave.

“What are your names?” He heard Katara hesitantly ask. Su Lah took the initiative to introduce everyone after a moment of silence. “I’m Su Lah, this is Revrak on my right. On my left is Zuko with Sozin and Oshu.” There was another moment of silence, probably Su Lah prompting them to introduce themselves in turn.
Aang’s voice broke the silence with joy. “I’m Aang, and these are Katara and Sokka. There’s also Appa, my flying bison, and Momo, my flying lemur!” Zuko lifted his head a bit off Su Lah in order to look for the lemur. Last he saw him, Momo was scurrying creepily down a tree. Perched on Appa’s head was the lemur. Watching.

Yeah, that’s not creepy at all. In the search for Momo, Zuko noticed how Sokka was staring at him. When their eyes met the water tribe boy quickly looked away. Weird. His attention from the act was drawn away with Aang’s next words. “Since those soldiers are looking for us we can’t start a fire. But you can lay on Appa! He’s really soft and warm, and I don’t think you would like the sleeping bags we own. They coughed all over their bags and mine’s pretty thin.” Aang looked apologetic but really there was no need.

They were pretty stubborn when it came to people giving them things (All before they were captured). Of course Oshu was really young when he was taken, but Su Lah and Revrak rubbed off on him. Zuko can also be stubborn, but not nearly as much. So really there was no need to look as he did.

Zuko cleared his throat,—which ouch, why—and sat up straight. “We appreciate the offer, as long as Appa doesn’t try to eat us I’m sure we will be fine. If not, we can always handle the cold.” Maybe that was a little fib. Zuko hated the cold, but he knew the others' were used to it after so long in the cold. For a Fire Nation ship it got pretty cold.

Aang smiled at them, shaking his head so quickly it looked like it could fly right off. “He doesn’t, he’s a vegetarian just like me!” Zuko dipped his head in Aang’s direction and burrowed back into Su Lah’s side. Some conversation passed between Su Lah and the others. Mainly about where they were from, it didn’t escape his notice how no one asked about their capture. It made a small smile grace his lips, if only barely.

It was nice to see how kind and welcoming they were being. Especially for who they were, and seeing how they didn’t gain anything from this. Oshu and Aang seemed to get along better, more childlike than anyone else. Even with the horrors they both have seen.

A yawn from his left, Oshu, dragged him back to the present. With quiet ease he tugged Oshu up, heading for Appa. He felt the stares of the others as he manipulated Oshu as close to Appa as Zuko felt comfortable with. The siblings had moved, now closest to the tail end of Appa. Zuko had put him and Oshu in between the animal’s legs. Oshu smiled at him softly before closing his eyes. When Zuko looked up he noticed how everyone was staring at him.

Was it wrong to move over here? Did they want to recline the offer? These worries perished once Aang smiled and lay down on Appa’s tail. “It is getting late, the sun is almost set. We should rest now and then head out in the morning. Hopefully they won’t find us.” Zuko could have done without that last part but otherwise agreed. As Su Lah and Revrak joined them he felt someone still staring. Looking up, it proved to be Sokka, again.

Creepy. Zuko thought, just about to confront the boy when a tug on his sleeve made him turn. It was Revrak, clarity full in his eyes. “Sleep here,” His rough quiet voice told him. Zuko followed along with him and lay next to Oshu. Su Lah on his other side and Revrak on Oshu’s.

If he closed his eyes he could almost imagine they were alone. Maybe back in the cell, maybe in a safe Earth Kingdom village. Not in the middle of the woods in ruins, on the run from his Husband’s crew. Turning on his side, positioning Sozin better, Zuko wondered if Zhao was dead. If he was, what did that mean for Zuko?

If the soldiers found him would he be killed to lay with Zhao? He knows that happened to an Omega when he was nine. Their Husband had died at war and when they brought the body back the Omega was killed. Usually they aren’t, at least not anymore. From what Zuko heard from Azula, Omegas had gained some rights. Granted they were about not being killed with their Alpha and that they could walk freely around the kingdom.

Zuko wondered if he was to die soon. Maybe Agni would forsake him for killing his Husband. After all it was Agni who blessed every wedding.

I hope I get to see Sozin grow.

With that last thought Zuko closed his eyes and willed for sleep to take him.

Notes:

Sorry about not posting for like two weeks, I have no excuse. I'm just lazy. I don't like this chapter, I feel like I rushed it but again, I haven't posted for a while.

Also tried out some Avatar slang, they're weird. (But you know "kid friendly" show)

Welp, I hope you have a good week!
