Chapter 1: Prolouge (Opening)
Summary:
When the only way is forward.
This portion of the fic may seem somewhat 'anti-Andy' [as angst-heavy as it is, those familiar with my/our work
know that SURRERA always WINS)
Chapter Text
Lucas Eipley - Cheif of Seattle Fire Department and Robert Sullivan's best friend {and 'BROTHER'} - remarked "You didn't fall for that I hope."
{he means whether Sully had succumbed to his ex's seduction attempt over the past weekend}: "yOU DON'T DARE say it."
A weak, rueful smile from Sullivan, along with a sheepish shrug. "BOBBY - I hate to say this and I promise I'm not taking a piss {shitting on you}
but Herrera's...HISTORY you may find problematic."
"How so ?" Robert wanted to know.
Luke grimaced before clarifying: "A less charitable man might refer to her a...as a TRULL {a loose/wanton woman}."
"Huh...I appreciate you softening the blow, My Guy ."
Ripley grimaced, distressed that perhaps he'd gone too far. ""After...CLAIRE...I would have done anything to ease your hurt and...it
broke me when I couldn't do anything to ease your distress. You're MY BROTHER, Bobby: as close to me as Jen or Kayla; Tommy or Mikey...and
the fact is that if you get involved with Herrera and her 'nature' were to take over...is whoever they are by her age - you know that as well as I
do. Let's say that she's a well-known commodity in our old stomping grounds of The Emerald and Joe's Bar. And...at some of the fire stations."
Robert studies his dearest friend and adoptive brother carefully, then feels immediate shame for doubting 'Riptide's' motives. The Australian-
American convinced his parents to take in a traumatised 17-year-old Robert Sullivan when the latter's father and mother perished in a plane crash
{the teen's Nazi Grandfather doesn't want him, leaving the youth with no place to live; the old man - never a fan of his daughter's union with a Man
Of Colour - tells Amelia's 'SCHVARTZE mongrel' {n-word} to pack his things and leave the day following his daughter's death. Lon and Marcy {Luke's
parents} never bat an eye when their son proposes that Robert reside with THEM. When Marcy is asked how many children she has she always
answers SIX with exactly zero hesitation. Lucas does not want his brother hurt.

...Oh Lord, I miss Lucas {Daniel}...Oh, I miss him so much...
Oh, Oh...Oh, Lucas {Daniel}, my brother, you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal? Your eyes have died, but you see more than I
Lucas {Daniel}, you're a star in the face of the sky...

~~FLASHBACK 2~~
Samantha Powell [Diane Lewis' receptionist]: "Hey, Diane...Andy Herrera-Sullivan is requesting an emergent appointment; she sounds a bit...
I dunno...desperate."
Diane Lewis: "Hmm. Please call my 10: 00 am and reschedule for the late afternoon if they're agreeable: please and thank you, Sam."
SP: "Don't mention it." About 20 minutes later she reports to her Boss that the 10:00 am agreed to the schedule change and Andy has
been 'shoe-horned' in...over at '19', Andy remains locked in her office, with the door closed and the lights off; the reason for her isolation is
the following:
The morning shift begins eventually, at least until the Station Commander is about to enter the beanery and overhears her team discussing
certain recent events:
Victoria Hughes: "WTLF is all that I'm saying ."
Warren adds "Do I need to mention who coincidentally is 'subbing' at 88 ?"
"What a fucking low-life !" Cutler growls.
Finch adds "So...we're flaming GIBSON and HERRERA skates? - NO, UH-UH !"
"Did anyone else hear about their little 'secret pact'?" Miller wants to know.
Warren snarked "ONE GUESS what the terms of that pact were !"
"Gibson wants THAT ASS; I get it! And from what I hear the Boss is cringe times ten snickers 'Chaos Kate' Powell.
All present: "SHUT IT, ASSHOLE
!" Blanching, Powell jumps up from the table and rushes out [she DOES NOT see Andy]...
"Why so quiet, Montgomery ?" Vic asks.
Montgomery replies "It's all being said, right ?"

{Oh, it's gone...All gone...And no one...
Who takes the pain away...Oh it's been...So long
You've been gone...But nothing fades away...Now I'm lost
So lost, While you found - Another heart to take
No I'm not...Alright...I'm not fine
I'm blinded by the light of your halo...
Can you see it...Can't you feel me...In your halo...
Can't you see it
Can't you feel me
I'm so alone...I'm all alone...I'm so alone...I'M ALL ALONE...}

As quietly as she could the Captain slipped back down the stairs and into her office. She stays there until 1125, when she
she typed out a quick message to dispatch: 'Please advise Lieutenant Maya Bishop that I will be out of the office until 0700
tomorrow morning. And that she is acting Captain until then'. She half-expected the Acura MDX SUV Crossover Sullivan gifted
her for her birthday half a year ago to be missing from where she'd parked [to be honest she could not blame him if he HAD
taken it back. Navigating the lightly-traveled streets leading to HQ she wondered if she would ever be free of the shame and self-
disgust permeating her mind and body. At least Diane won't judge her...she's about to go inside the building when an ALERT
flashed across her cell phone screen...reading it her mind goes BLANK.

Grey Sloan Memorial Medical Center: a gurney pushes through the ED doors, prompting Miranda Bailey to run forward - "I-Is
that Robert Sullivan ?!" she gasps.
The patient is a biracial male, 36 years of age - unresponsive; breathing shallow!" recites Kat Noonan. "Which bay, Chief?!"
Snapping on rubber gloves, Dr. Webber answers "Take him to 6B." On the count of three the assembled caregivers hoist the
strapping 6 foot four, 240-pound Battalion Chief onto a hospital bed and go to work: "Code BLUE and respiration team to
to Trauma 6B - Stacey get OWEN DOWN HERE!"
Trauma Nurse Gloria: He's Hypoxic - 83%' no pulse."
Miranda: STARTING COMPRESSIONS...Give me a CENTRAL LINE - prep a tube, and call CODE BLUE, RESPIRATORY."
Webber calls "EMINASE 300mls and wide bore IV...******: CT, blood and gas panels and page Neuro."
Trauma Nurse Dani: "NO PULSE, Drs!"
Webber called out "Pause compressions...pulse restored; get some HEPARIN in him. And 1mg EPI....where the hell's my
EMINASE??!"
TN Gloria reports "EMINASE IN; loading up epi...'K: epi's in."
Miranda asks Richard "DVT turned pulmonary?!"
