Chapter Text
The tidal wave of storming emotions that was Louis, Lestat and Claudia's life was something all encompassing in every way shape and form.
Such a raging coagulation of what they experienced makes one careless. Makes you uncaring of the people their to witness it. Makes it not worth your time or effort to always take proper precaution to avoid the wander eyes of the far too clever and observant. Of those who managed to grab small piece of a puzzle they weren't full aware existed.
The following is a collection of but a few moments of when some people managed to get a notable piece of two.
Chapter Text
“Did you hear?” Penelope asked lowly as she sat quickly down at the table with two other young ladies.
They were already rolling their eyes fondly and turning to her much to mischievous smile. She’d given that same line she gives every time she had more gossip to share.
“No, we did not hear. Don’t no body be in everybody’s business like you.” Lucy said plainly. Evelyn didn’t bother hiding her own amused giggle behind her teacup.
“But everyone has been talking about it. You know… about Mr. du Lac?” Penelope added lowly. She wasn’t looking to lose her job by gossiping openly about her boss. Doesn’t mean she’s not gonna gossip, she just doesn’t want to get caught doing it.
“Still no.” Lucy said easily with a sigh. Pulling out a deck of cards and dealing them out.
“Yeah, actually I have heard about that. If ya talking about what I think ya talking about.” Evelyn responded. Lucy looked up more alert now. A bit put out by not knowing what they both seem to be talking about.
“Well, don’t leave me in the dark. What about Mr. du Lac?” Lucy demanded. Nodding her head in thanks when a waiter came by and dropped off drinks for them.
“He been catting around with some rich white man.” Penelope elaborates.
“Who Mr. Anderson?” Lucy asked for clarification.
“No, some French men. New to town. They been thick as thieves since his boat rolled up.” Penelope explained.
“I know you lying.” Lucy said, face scrunched up. The proud black man that she knew to be Mr. du Lac, would never associate with no uppity white man unless he had no choice.
“Nah, she telling the truth. I seen em, myself.” Evelyn backed her up.
“Mr. du Lac?” Lucy asked voice thick in disbelief.
“Yeah.” Evelyn sais
“Mr. Louis de Pointe du Lac?” Lucy asked again, more tension on each word.
“ Yes , child. Don’t make me say it again.” Evelyn said with a throaty chuckle as she sipped her drink
“Ya’ll fibbing.” Lucy said, looking at her best friends like they were mocking her. Waiting for the joke to end.
“Don’t believe us? Look there.” Penelope said, slapping her arm to make her turn head quickly.
As if they were Satan summoned by the invoking of his name themselves, Mr. du Lac and the white man in question were driving down the road laughing uo a storm . A single cigar seemingly being passed between them. That shocking sight was the only glimpse they got before they turned the corner.
“My lying eyes deceive me…” Lucy muttered out as they disappeared.
“Goodness, you so hard headed! What we got to do? Drag you other there so you can asks the man yourself?” Penelope barked out in laughter.
“It’s just hard to believe. It’s just… you know why it’s hard to fathom!” Lucy said, hands thrown up. They are not about to pretend like she was the crazy one for noticing the world flipping over.
“Yeah, I don’t blame you. Taking business with them white men is one thing but making friends with one? Took me seeing it to believe it too.” Evelyn agreed.
“You know that’s a good point… you think it’s really just business?” Penelope threw out there.
“I don’t know. I don’t think so. Last week I had a table next to them at the sporting house down the way and from what I over-heard they seemed to really been talking. Not business but just plain ole good conversation.” Evelyn added.
“That Lestat fellow was keeping pace?” Lucy asked her. Frowning at another lost hand.
“Sure was. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a white man and black man interact like that. He even shook his hand when he sat down. In the chair next to him!” Evelyn said, eye wide an emphasis.
“Them Europeans sure are something else... I need to get me one of those.” Penelope hummed.
Laughter escaped Lucy and Evelyn’s chest before they could atop themselves politely.
“Look at this dreamer!” Lucy shouted in tease.
“What you think I can’t?” Penelope asked a challenged look on her smiling face.
“I have a better chance of being crowned Queen of Mardi Gras then you do you getting yourself a rich white man. Child please!” Evelyn piled on.
“Don’t let em fool ya now! Them white boys love a piece of this dark chocolate!” Penelope proclaimed proudly with a sultry wiggle of her body.
The friendly cackling of their loud laughter was heard for hours after the topic of Mr. du Lac had passed.
