Chapter 1: Prologue
Chapter Text
The brunette quickly sidestepped a soldier carrying several ornate boxes. Luggage, but not any commoner's luggage. As if the commotion did not already scream royal procession, seeing the older princess' personal effects at least helped confirm the nature of the expedition, and, fortunately, it was not an aggressive one. Yet.
"Going somewhere?" He smiled and gave a half bow after folding his arm across his chest. It was a formality, but one the prince appreciated.
"Yes, my siblings and I are going to pay a visit to the Northern Fortress."
As expected, "Care for an entourage?"
The crown prince raised his brow, but said nothing, "Not this time, Laslow. Instead, I wanted to talk to you about your most recent report."
This caused his smile to falter a bit, "Yes, my liege." It still did not feel right calling anyone that other than her.
"Not here," The prince looked around at the busy servants, "Follow me."
Laslow followed the prince to an out of the way storage room. It was hardly befitting a serious meeting, but it was away from prying eyes and ears. The prince's expression was even more stern than usual as he broached the topic.
"How confident are you in your report?"
"Very, sir. I trust my informants with my life."
"I don't need to tell you how troubling this is. If Father hears that Hoshido is building up its military, he may very well choose to strike."
"I am aware, Prince Xander."
"So," Xander pulled his arms behind himself, demanding respect despite standing in a storage closet, "For now, Father isn't to see this report. I want you to make absolutely certain before we tell him. I don't want to risk a war over one report no matter how much you trust your sources."
"I understand, my prince."
"To that end, since you seem so well connected I want you to see if you can find anything else about this aggressive stance. I will take appropriate action to defend Nohr and her interests, but this seems out of character for Queen Mikoto. I would like to be certain."
"Understood," Laslow saluted, "I'll see what I can dig up."
"Very good," Xander nodded. He had given up on asking about said sources, but they had proven accurate so far. Despite his suspicious origins, Laslow had yet to give him much reason to distrust him. Other than his incessant flirting with the maids.
"We should be back after a week," Xander told his retainer, "We'll address this further then."
"Yes, milord," Laslow waited at attention until the prince left. Then he let out a breath. He was at least glad they were not going to war, but this was still a fine mess. Worse yet, it was rather hard to even get a glimpse of their target.
Letting out another sigh, Laslow muttered, "You'd better have something more pleasant for me this time."
The crown prince let a frustrated sigh leave his lips upon making a quick exit after the ending of the meeting. Adjusting his expression to not so easily give away his discomfort, the samurai continued down the hall. He did not make it far though.
"You seem troubled, Prince Ryoma."
Said prince forced himself to stop and calm himself before turning to face the woman. She had brown eyes that gave away only a portion of her intelligence with a face framed by snow white hair. The kimono wound around her spoke to her position, yet nothing of her status as a stranger.
"I am fine, Kanpaku. I am merely…troubled by recent events."
"Ah, you do not agree with my advice," She walked down the steps to get a bit closer.
"I am uncertain," Ryoma backed up a step, "I believe we should be ready to meet any threat that Nohr presents, but Mother…she believes in peace, and I would like to believe in her."
"I definitely understand that. That said, not everyone can be reasoned with. People like Garon will not honor peace talks. Something your family unfortunately knows all too well."
Ryoma's fists tightened, "Yes, I am well aware of King Garon's treachery, and, believe me, few would like to see him pay more than me, but I worry we are provoking the beast here."
"A reasonable fear," The advisor agreed, "One that I have included in my calculations. Though with Garon's track record, it makes sense to be prepared. Plus, I can handle anything that so-called tactician Iago throws our way."
That did earn a slight chuckle from the prince, "Of that I have no doubt. I haven't seen anyone who could match your tactical prowess. I daresay there is no tactician in this world that could match your skill."
"Well, this is gloomy," Robin looked out over the countryside seeing nothing but overcast skies.
"It is not exactly a picturesque landscape," Lucina tugged on the strap holding her backpack in place.
"But this should be the place," Robin hoisted his bag as he looked to his wife, "Ready for a new adventure?"
"So long as you are by my side."
"Always."
A/N: I'm back! Took a while, but I progressed enough on this story to deem it ready to start publishing. Progress is a bit slower these days, but I naturally do intend to finish it.
Chapter 2: Chapter 1
Chapter Text
"That bad, huh?" Laslow leaned back in his chair outside a small diner as he met with his contact. Or rather, the intermediary for his contact.
"I'm afraid so," The mage adjusted his glasses, "Bart as he's taken to calling himself, said, and I quote, 'Some dame has the royals wrapped around her little finger.' We are looking into her past, but so far we have little to show for it. All we know is that she is an outsider who quickly worked her way up with her impressive strategic acumen."
"Sounds kinda familiar," Laslow deadpanned, "This isn't good. If they keep this up, there will be war. It's just a matter of what will finally set them off."
"I am well aware," The mage closed his eyes, "But remember, stopping the war is not our primary goal."
"No, but you gotta admit that it certainly wouldn't hurt."
"Perhaps, but the tensions were boiling under the surface long before we arrived. It would be-"
"Get down!" Laslow whisper yelled as he pulled the redhead under the table.
"Are we under attack?" He reached for his tome.
"Worse. Look."
Following Laslow's gaze, the mage was quickly able to deduce the cause of his turmoil, "How are they here?"
"I don't know, but let's not find out."
"Indeed. You have a cover to uphold after all. Very well, we'll have to just sneak around them."
"Easier said than done…" Laslow muttered as his true liege and her husband sat down across the street for lunch.
"Ngh," The drowsy princess rubbed her eyes, "What is it?"
"Your siblings are due to arrive any minute now, and you're still in bed," The butler informed her as the maids poured her tea and opened the curtains. Not that the latter did much in this perpetually gloomy climate. "That is 'what is up.'"
"Wait," The princess shot up in her bed, "That's today?"
The twin maids nodded and the princess hurriedly jumped out of bed, "Oh, I overslept! Xander and I were supposed to spar. He's going to be so disappointed if I'm late."
"Yes, well," The blue haired maid cleared her throat, "That's no reason to pull a lord Leo and go with your clothes on backwards. They won't be here for a few hours yet."
"Oh," She stopped and offered a sheepish smile, "Whoops."
"'Whoops,' indeed," The butler began making her bed, "Gunter would still like to see you beforehand, so let's not dilly dally, hmm?"
"Don't mind Jakob, Lady Corrin," Felicia nodded after nearly dropping a plate, "I'm sure today will be the day you finally beat lord Xander."
"I don't know about that, but I would like to finally see the capital soon."
"To that end, I shall prepare your morning meal," Jakob bowed, "I trust you will make sure the princess is on time, yes?"
"Of course," The more collected maid nodded.
"Very well. I will see you at breakfast, Lady Corrin," The butler left the room providing a curt, and to the untrained ear, dismissive, "Flora. Felicia."
"I don't know what you see in him," Felicia sighed as they got to work picking out Corrin's clothes for the day.
"He is a respectable butler and not nearly as bad as you think," Flora replied as she helped with Corrin's hair.
"Oh, don't pretend it's just professional respect."
"I, uh…"
"Flora?" Corrin moved her head to peek at her maid as she stopped brushing, "You and Jakob? Congratulations!"
"It's not like that," Flora blushed profusely.
"That's just because you don't put yourself out there. I bet if he knew he'd jump at the chance!"
"I don't know about that…"
"Might as well try!" Corrin jumped up, "Let's go tell him now!"
"W-what?" Flora blanched as Corrin darted out the door, "L-lady Corrin! Wait!"
After nearly giving her maid a heart attack, Corrin was talked into not doing that. Her brief pouting fit was cut short though by the sound of a trumpet heralding the arrival of her siblings which had her practically vibrating with excitement in the main hall.
The door had barely opened before a short blonde ran for her and tackled her into a hug.
"Corrin! I'm so happy to see you!"
The princess laughed as she set her sister down, "Me too, Elise. It feels like it's been ages since your last visit."
"We would have come sooner, but life has been hectic these past few months," A different blonde answered, "Though that's no excuse for such a childish display."
"Oh, hush, Leo," Their older sister smacked him lightly on the top of the head, "I think we could all use a good hug."
"Later, Camilla," Xander walked up to Corrin, stern-faced as usual before breaking out into a smile, "It is good to see you though."
"Likewise," Corrin beamed.
"So, are you ready for our duel? It is the official reason for our visit."
Corrin steeled herself, "I'm ready to earn my freedom."
"Excellent," Xander smiled, "Well, then, come, Little Princess, let us see if that resolve holds true in combat."
Corrin slid backwards from the sheer force of Xander's swing. How he could so nonchalantly push her back like that, she had no idea. Still, she could not give up. This was her freedom on the line. She would just have to get creative.
"Come now, Little Princess," Xander had not so much as broken a sweat, "It will take more than that to survive in combat." The breeze at the top of the spire had both of their capes billowing in the wind as Corrin tried to find some way to best her brother. He was a titan though. What could she possibly do to best him?
Looking around, she was at a loss for what to do. Backed up against the ramparts, she looked down at the considerable distance below. However, something caught her eye. Looking over to Xander with determination in her eyes, the princess charged.
Xander readied himself and prepared to parry her blade, but the strike never came. Instead, Corrin ran around him and, to his surprise and horror, vaulted herself off the side of the fortress tower.
As he went to peer over the ledge, Corrin vaulted back over the side using a pole displaying one of their banners. Using the element of surprise, she managed to land behind Xander on his own horse with her sword to his back.
Surprised, but nonetheless impressed, Xander smiled, "I yield."
"Really?" Corrin's eyes widened as she hugged him from behind, "Finally!"
"Impressive ingenuity," Leo congratulated as her siblings approached from the sidelines where they had been able to at least see Corrin go for the flagpole, "But I must ask, what was your plan if you fell?"
"I wasn't worried!" Corrin beamed, "I knew Camilla would come rescue me."
"I appreciate the confidence you have in me, dear, but please avoid such recklessness in the future."
"Besides," Leo interjected, "Elise with a rescue staff would have been far more effective. If she had one."
"You bet I would be," Elise puffed up, "I'll have to get one of those."
"Questionable tactics aside, Corrin won," Xander smiled, "That's exactly the kind of dedication Father was hoping to see. I'm sure he'll be pleased."
"Does that mean…"
"Yes," The crown prince nodded, "Pack your things. You'll be joining us in Windmire."
The halls of Hoshido's Imperial Palace were usually quite calm. The only usual exception to this rule was the royal training grounds where the royal siblings could often be found honing their skills. To this end, the guards were also usually used to seeing the royals at their least composed.
Today was no exception to this exceptional place. The youngest Hoshidan son had a tendency to go all out in his training. It was no wonder why, but most knew to keep their distance while he was engrossed in his training as he lacked the fine control of Ryoma, but did not lack for reflexes.
"At ease," A calm voice told the guards as they saluted. Prince Takumi, however, was not one to fear his brother. In fact, he smirked as he tore the training dummy to shreds. The younger prince practiced with Ryoma, but the way of the samurai did not fit him as well. He had formed his own style that to most people looked quite animalistic. There was a method to the madness though.
"I think you could really use a better opponent," Takumi smirked against the wall as his brother did not stop to address him.
"There aren't many. Most of the guards are no match for me."
"But you still can't beat Ryoma." His brother gave him an annoyed glare forcing Takumi to chuckle, "What about that new retainer you got. She humiliated you."
"She didn't humiliate me," The younger brother did stop that time, "It was a draw."
"Yeah, but, come on, she had not even broken a sweat, unlike that sickly looking guy. Now, he humiliated you by sheer virtue of winning."
"They're strong, and that's what matters," He stepped towards his brother, "But they're out for now. Caeda is on leave, and Bart is running errands."
"Fair enough, I'd offer a spar, but I know better than fighting up close with you."
"Heh," The younger prince smirked, "Just like I wouldn't dare challenge you to an archery competition."
"We have different strengths, that's for sure."
"Don't be modest. You're the best shot in Hoshido, and I'm sure you're better than anything Nohr has. Perhaps that's why Fujin Yumi picked you as its wielder,"
"Hey, don't feel bad," Takumi pushed off the wall and put a hand on his brother's shoulder, "There are only so many of these things to go around."
"Right. I just think a legendary weapon could help me get her back."
"You may not have a legendary weapon, but you have us."
"Thanks, Takumi."
"Don't mention it. Now, Mother wants to see us about the upcoming festival."
"Right, it's close. I had entirely forgotten."
"That's because you get so wrapped up in your training, Kamui. Now, let's go."
"The local cuisine is definitely unique," Robin set the fork down, making sure to look directly at Lucina and indirectly to the side, "A bit too much garlic, but filling."
"Really? Seems fine to me."
"I guess anything would after what you've been through. Sorry, guess I should be more considerate with my food critiques."
"No," Lucina gently dabbed her lips with a handkerchief reminding Robin she was still of noble blood despite her hardships, "It's fine. I have not been a hungred for some time."
"Well, now that lunch is over, what say you we end this charade?"
"Yes," Lucina nodded and stood, having noticed his focus on the restaurant across the street, "Let's."
Likewise, Robin casually rose from the table and almost casually walked across the street. Once close enough, he used his little telekinetic trick to levitate one of the tables, revealing two men hiding underneath. Robin raised a brow at seeing the two.
Their cover blown, the two made to run, but they did not get far since Lucina had flanked them. Seeing them, she was shocked initially, but that wore off quickly as she folded her arms.
"Inigo. Laurent. Explain."
A/N: So, as you can see, I made some changes. Outside of the obvious, I also decided it wasn't really that feasible to make it literally nighttime all but one day a year in Nohr, so instead I settled on making it really gloomy weather for the most part. Pretty much stereotypical Britain as far as weather is concerned.
Food also took a bit of inspiration from European peasant fair with the garlic being a reference to that. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up. Garlic was apparently a big peasant spice.
For the more obvious, you probably saw it coming, but, yeah, the others tagged along here. I originally had Inigo/Laslow name drop Cynthia in the prologue. As for where they all are, well, most of them are revealed soon. With two main exceptions.
Chapter 3: Chapter 2
Chapter Text
"Lucina!" Laslow forced a smile, "Robin! Good to see you enjoying the married life. What brings you all the way out here?"
"I think we should be asking that," Lucina folded her arms and tapped with one finger like an annoyed mother, "How did you even get to another world? We had to have Lady Tiki's help to even get here. How many of you are here?"
"Ahem," Laurent cleared his throat, "If I may?"
"Please."
"How we got here is a bit of a long story. We can fill you in, but not here. Mayhaps we take this somewhere more private?"
"Perhaps that would be best," Robin finally spoke up, "After you."
The mage awkwardly led the way over to the room that he was renting out for the day. The boys were not exactly in a talking mood - a rarity for Inigo - nor was Lucina. Robin could see her boring a hole in the back of their skulls with her gaze. Naturally, Lucina wanted to make sure they were not up to mischief. Especially as she felt their actions reflected on her and Ylisse.
Not that Robin suspected they were actively up to no good, but they had a tendency to be eccentric. Their own meeting rather spoke to how they could act without proper leadership so Robin could understand Lucina wanting to know what was up after that fiasco.
Seeing more of the town, Robin recognized that this must have been a mining town. The land nearby did not seem particularly arable, and they had yet to see a single farm since arriving in this kingdom. The climate was not as miserable as Plegia, though it was often overcast and gloomy. That said, it was starting to look like it would have a similar economy if the rest of the country was similar to what they had seen so far. He hoped it did not have a similar government.
The small inn that Laurent was holed up in was modest, but it was pretty clearly temporary accommodations. Robin was the only one who opted to sit down though.
"I suppose I should start at the beginning," Laurent finally started, "It began on the night of Robin's welcome back party when we were contacted by a mysterious voice asking for help."
"And you didn't say anything?" Lucina waited for the response with a slightly harsh expression.
"At the time, we had no way to know if it was worth yours or Chrom's attention. Especially after everything that had happened."
"So," Inigo chimed in, "We made for the Mila Tree like we thought the voice wanted."
"And what did you find?" Robin asked, now even more curious.
"That…is where matters started to get so convoluted."
"Didn't think I'd be back here so soon," Brady looked up at the tree, silently proud he had not wheezed once on the trip.
"Do you sense anything, Nah?" Gerome remained all business.
"I," The manakete furrowed her brow as she looked up at the tree, "I don't know. It feels like something's there, but also…not."
Laurent adjusted his glasses, "Care to elaborate?"
"I can't really describe it, but…I think it's powerful."
"Stay on your toes, heroes," Owain led the way with a sword confidently strewn upon his shoulder, "Lest we be caught by a foul ambush."
They kept their arms at the ready as they approached the tree. Under the dwindling light of dusk, it would be harder to make out any would-be attackers, but try as they might, they could not see anything amiss.
"Heroes…" The voice from before finally beckoned and they all prepared for a fight even as a white robed figure materialized before them. Despite the initial surprise, he proved less than threatening when he collapsed to one knee clutching his chest.
"Such travel is quite taxing," He looked up, face mostly obscured by his hood, "But I thank you for answering my summons."
"You…" Nah stared at him, "Are you a dragon?"
"Heh," He pulled himself up to his feet, "In a sense, but I may be closer to human than not these days."
"So why did you call us?" Severa folded her arms, not trusting this stranger.
"Right. I do not have much time. My very being is…unstable, but my world is still in dire straits. I wanted heroes that could help save my realm."
"Why us?" Inigo asked, hands on his hips, "There are greater heroes than us about."
"I targeted my call to attract as many powerful figures as I could. You…must suffice."
"How flattering," Severa muttered.
"I implore you, I do not have much time. If he is not stopped, then my world will fall to ruin. Nothing but desolation will be left after his madness runs its course."
"Who?" Gerome demanded.
"Anankos," The mysterious man clenched his fists, "A dragon of terrible power. His hatred of humanity knows no bounds. He is nothing but madness at this point."
"That sounds familiar," Yarne shuddered, "We can't just leave them like that, can we?"
"Of course not!" Cynthia was eager to help, "Point us at this bad guy!"
"We should put this to a vote," Laurent adjusted his glasses, looking straight at the robed figure, "We, after all, do not know if we can trust this man."
"A reasonable-" The man quickly shot his arm out. The Shepherds took a defensive stance only for a man that none of them had seen who had been sneaking up on them to be torn apart by a torrent of water, "They found us!"
"Who found us?" Severa demanded, pointing her sword at the man, "Did you just set us up?"
"Not intentionally, no, but Anankos would like little more than to see me dead or captured. His minions found me faster than I had anticipated."
"What if they attack others?" Noire asked in a panic trying to spot more of them.
"Noire, you, Brady, and Laurent, cover us!" Inigo shouted.
"Cynthia, Nah and I can scout ahead," Gerome was also trying to spot more enemies.
"Good call, Gerome," Owain nodded, "Inigo, Sev, think we can handle the front line?"
"But of course," Inigo twirled a sword.
Severa, however, growled, still glaring at the mysterious man. It was not until Owain put a hand on her shoulder that she backed down.
"I appreciate your quick action, but we do not have the time. You must go, now. These invisible soldiers will take too much time to deal with,." Channeling his power, he opened a portal, "I will deal with the threats here with the last of my power."
"We don't even know what to do!" Inigo shouted.
"You cannot stop him. However, I can point you to those that can…"
"Congratulations, Lady Corrin!" The stable girl happily greeted her liege, "I heard you finally defeated Xander!"
"Thanks, Lilith," Corrin blushed, "But he was going easy on me."
"Don't sell yourself short," Flora joined in on the congratulations, "It was a well earned victory."
"Flora is right," Jakob bowed, "Milady has proven her skills. You worked hard for this day."
"Yeah," Felicia grinned, "You've wanted nothing more for years."
"Thanks, guys," Corrin beamed before initiating a group hug, "I wish you could all come with me."
"Someone has to stay and take care of things here," Flora reassured, "And I'm sure the maids in the castle can handle your morning routine."
"And if they can't, then I shall give them a stern talking to," Jakob huffed, "But they should be the best of the best. I am confident they can adapt."
"Well," Corrin sighed, "Guess this is goodbye for now. I feel like I'm saying goodbye to my sisters."
"Don't feel sad, Lady Corrin," Lilith encouraged, "It's not like we'll never see you again."
"She's right," Felicia nodded, "So chin up, we'll keep the place in tip top shape while you're away."
"I'm sure you will," Corrin smiled as Gunter arrived to round her and Jakob up.
"The royals are eager to get underway. Jakob, you'll be riding with me and the other soldiers."
"Yes, sir," Jakob bowed and Corrin offered one more wave as she left to rejoin her siblings.
"I see," Robin narrowed his eyes and rubbed his chin, "Another mad dragon. Of course."
"And what progress have you made?" Lucina asked, less frustrated than before and more concerned.
"Not much, I'm afraid," Inigo, or rather, Laslow sighed, "While we've been able to ingratiate ourselves to the Nohrian royals, we've yet to set eyes on the Nohrian princess. We've had better luck in Hoshido at least."
"Why are they in different nations anyway?" Robin inquired.
"Oh, that," Inigo sighed looking over to the mage, "You wanna explain it?"
"Very well…"
"Corrin, please," Leo muttered as his sister kept running back and forth between the windows of the carriage, "You're shaking the carriage. Show some dignity, please."
"Huh?" She stopped and blushed before sitting on her hands, "Sorry."
"Don't listen to him, just a stick in the mud," Elise stuck her tongue out.
"At least I act my age."
"I think you may act a bit older than that, dear," Camilla teased, "Really, it's her first time out of that drafty fortress in years. I think she's right to be excited."
"Back me up here, Xander."
"As royalty, it is all our jobs to properly reflect on Nohr itself the dignity deserved," Xander then let his expression soften, "In public at least. I will expect a fine showing in the capital, but there's nothing wrong with enjoying the sights until then."
This energized the young princess who resumed taking in the sights with fervor, and as much as Leo was annoyed, he could not truly blame her for her excitement. Still, someone had to be the voice of realism.
Following her lead, the youngest brother looked out the window himself seeing a sight he himself had seen plenty of times. So much so that perhaps he had taken its majesty for granted.
Castle Krakenburg. A symbol of Nohr's strength if ever there was one. The city of Windmire surrounded it in what, according to legend, was the first mine started by the first king of Nohr which kicked off their status as a world power. Naturally, the castle itself reached out from the center of the city providing a fortress with only a few access points.
The main bridge actually skipped the old city in the mine meaning they only had to travel through the suburbs that had sprawled out on the relatively flat ground surrounding the capital. Corrin was a bit disappointed by that, but at the hour that they had arrived, there would not be much sightseeing to be had.
The middle princess took to stretching once finally freed from the carriage inside the castle gates. All the while her sparkling eyes were glued to the majestic structure of the castle.
"It's so much bigger than the fortress."
"It is Nohr's crown jewel," Xander smiled proudly as he also took in the spires, Corrin's wonder infecting more than just Leo, "The central spire supporting it was said to be left by Nohr's first king himself."
"So will I be meeting Father today?" Corrin looked up excitedly at her eldest brother.
"Not tonight. It's far too late. Your audience is scheduled for tomorrow. Sir Jakob," Xander addressed the butler who had come along with Gunter, "I trust you to make sure she isn't late."
"You have my word," The butler bowed.
"Good. Then rest up. Tomorrow should be an…interesting day."
"Heya," Caeda dodged a sword swing on reflex, "Aren't you tired yet?"
Kamui wiped his brow, "Yes. Why aren't you?"
The bluenette beamed, "Years of heroic practice and experience."
"I think ya had better call it a night," Bart folded his arms, "You look pooped. I should know."
"For someone so sure he's a weakling, you managed to best me pretty handily," Kamui borderline pouted as he begrudgingly took his retainers' advice.
"Cause I use magic. And I still get winded pretty easily. Just decided to make the few shots I do get count."
"Heh," The prince smirked, "I'll keep that in mind."
After cleaning up, Kamui excused his retainers for the night. Caeda gave him one more concerned look before following after Bart. She passed by the kanpaku on her way out. She eyed the advisor for a moment before continuing on her way. It was not like she was in any position to judge someone for a mysterious past.
"Prince Kamui," The woman bowed respectfully, "I hope I'm not interrupting."
"No, I was calling it a night," He put his practice katana away, "What can I do for you, Kanpaku?"
"I was hoping I might have a moment of your time. Would you join me for a walk around the grounds?"
The prince raised a brow, but nodded his consent. The kanpaku was something of an outsider, but so far her advice had been spot on as far as he was concerned. It did not take her long to rise up the ranks and to fill in the position left open by Yukimura. Her skills were next to none, and she seemed to have a, in his opinion, healthy distrust of Nohr which only endeared her to him further.
"So, what's troubling you, Kanpaku?"
The advisor looked up to the starry sky, "It's about the festival. I think Nohr may try something."
"Those curs!" Kamui clenched his fists.
"We'll be expecting heavy traffic and even visitors. Not to mention the symbolic importance. I wanted to ask you to help me keep an eye out for anything suspicious leading up to or during the anniversary."
"I'll do whatever I can."
"I knew I could count on you," She smiled, "Just let me know if anything seems off."
"I'll keep my eyes peeled. Thank you, Kanpaku."
She smiled, her hazel eyes glinting in the moonlight, "It is my duty after all, but no need to be formal when it's just us. Reflet will do just fine."
The wyvern coop was not exactly a place most people were thrilled to be in, but for an up and coming knight, it was his favorite place. The solitude was just the icing on the cake. Though, he would not have minded better accommodations for his mount.
"Bear with me, Minerva," He stroked the wyvern's cheek as she chowed down.
"My, my pulling the late hours I see."
The knight stood at attention, "Lady Camilla. What brings you by at such a late hour?"
"I've been away so I came to catch up on my grooming. Only to find all the wyverns expertly cared for. Your doing, no doubt."
"I did not do it to be noticed."
"No, that much is obvious, and makes it all the more impressive. The Nohrian military can be rather cutthroat."
"Is that so?" The young man raised a brow.
"Oh quite, and what I'm about to do might ruffle some feathers."
"Pardon?" The knight suddenly felt uncomfortable.
"Oh, relax," The princess giggled, "Despite my reputation, I'm not that salacious. No, I'm putting you up for a promotion."
"Milady?"
"Your work with the wyverns has been exemplary. Furthermore, your riding skills have been spectacular. I must say, it's even driven me to push myself a bit more. I expect great things from you. The promotion is merely a reflection of your skills."
"...Very well. I will accept graciously."
"Good, good. Now, do be sure to get some sleep, Captain Geoffery."
"This is a lot to take in," Robin leaned back into his chair looking to his wife, "Give us a second, fellas?"
As the two men respectfully filed out, Lucina was the first to speak, "It seems they've stumbled into something big."
"Yes. Question is, what to do about it?"
"What about your sister?" Lucina sat across from him, "That is why we came."
"Well, according to Tiki, she is here. Perhaps we might find her through all this. Though…I really hope she isn't involved." Robin smiled up at her, "But, regardless, it could get ugly. I wouldn't want to drag you back into that."
"It's fine," Lucina answered a bit too quickly, earning an uncertain look, "Really. What kind of leader would I be to let them do this alone anyway? Besides, while the people of this world aren't my people, I'm sure my parents would do the same."
"Heh, that they would. So…you're sure about this?"
She took his hands in hers, "With one condition."
"Name it."
"You don't go trying to get yourself killed."
Robin smirked, "Deal."
Calling the other two back in, Robin and Lucina met them as a unified front, "If there are no objections, we'll help you out."
The two shared a glance before Laurent replied, "I can't say you wouldn't be helpful, but…"
"The reason we didn't tell you to begin with was not wanting to drag you into another mess."
"That's very thoughtful," Lucina nodded, "But not necessary."
"Besides, we may be able to accomplish our own goal while helping out," Robin provided.
"Why are you here anyway?"
"We're looking for my sister," Robin admitted with a hard face.
"'Sister?'" Inigo raised her brow, "Is she cute?"
Robin glared at him, "We're not on the best terms, but I was hoping to patch things up. Tiki ended up helping us out by pointing us here and getting us here."
"I also note you are down a member," Laurent looked around almost nervously.
"Ah, yes, Morgan is also staying with Tiki. We decided it best to take this trip alone."
"Hopefully she'll still be sane when we get back," Robin murmured.
"Relax, Lady Tiki will be just fine."
"Come on, Tiki!" Morgan pouted to the much older woman, "One more round?"
"Morgan, we've been playing this tome stacking game for hours. Aren't you the least bit tired?"
"Nope!" Morgan shook her head and smiled causing the manakete to sigh.
"I suppose your dual bloodlines really do provide a wealth of energy. Still, you have to tire sometime."
"Hmm," Morgan thought for a bit, "Tell you what, win the next game, and we can call it a night."
"Oh, very well," Tiki responded with exasperation, but she grinned all the same.
"Well, alright then," Laslow dropped the subject.
"First things first," Robin folded his arms, "I want to confer with the others. As many as we can get together at least. Inigo-"
"Laslow."
Robin blinked, "Excuse me?"
"We were advised that our assailant may have heard our names," Laurent explained, "As such, we have taken pseudonyms. He is Laslow. I am Klark. Also, I will not be accompanying you to the capital. I am acting as the go between for our groups, so I need to maintain some anonymity."
"Understandable. Where will you head next then?"
"I will relay this development to the others and gather their reports. I will make sure you are made aware of any developments."
"Understood. Let's see what lies ahead."
A/N: Merry Belated Christmas! Decided to post after as might not get much traffic during Christmas.
Chapter 4: Chapter 3
Chapter Text
Corrin did not require a wake up call that morning. In fact, she had barely slept. She had been waiting for this moment as long as she could remember. She knew what King Garon looked like, but little more than that. He had only been to the fortress once to observe her progress, but he left barely saying a word.
That meant that Corrin was determined to make a good impression. What that entailed, she was not entirely certain, but she was determined to do it anyway. She was already properly dressed before the maids even came to help. She thanked them for their service anyway and sent them on their way as she continued to pace in what she was told was her bedroom.
Her nervousness was not exactly hard to see as her butler came to serve her tea.
"Milady, if you don't calm down, you'll wear out the carpet."
"Huh?" Corrin stopped and looked at the plush carpet she had been treading over, "Oh, sorry."
"Nervous about meeting the king, I take it."
"That obvious, huh?" Corrin sheepishly sat down to sip the warm beverage.
"As the noonday sun."
"Sorry. It's just…I've been thinking about this nearly all my life."
"I'm sure, and I won't sugarcoat it, his reputation precedes him. Just keep your cool and try not to be overly friendly. I doubt he'll appreciate it."
"I'll…try to keep that in mind."
"Good," Jakob nodded, "Now, it's time you go meet your siblings. I'm sure they'll have much better insight than I."
"Thanks, Jakob," Corrin smiled kindly, "Just having you here is a great help. You'll be there, right?"
"Toward the back, yes. It seems my presence was requested along with Gunter's."
"Really?" Corrin tilted her head.
"Yes, but don't worry yourself with that. Just focus on what you need to do."
"Alright," Corrin took a breath, "I'll try."
All the while as they approached Windmire, Robin was analyzing the defensive abilities of the city. It was just something he did on reflex by this point. The city itself had plenty of defensive positions, but the old mine was not the most naturally defensible position. It was helped out by being relatively narrow on the sides of the chasm compared to most large cities. The sprawl over the edge was pretty standard for a city of its size though.
The castle, however, was arguably more bizarre than the capital itself. Erected on a large central spire, it was accessible only through a few bridges, one clearly a main entrance with a few tertiary access points. All of which could no doubt be easily sealed. At a glance, it looked incredibly well defended.
Despite being partially situated within an ancient mine, the city itself was not too dissimilar from what he was used to in Ylisse on the surface, but everything felt a bit darker and not just because of the overcast skies. The mood was just a bit less friendly, and a bit less jovial. Though, when he had first entered Ylisstol, the people had a leader that eased their fears and encouraged a sense of community. Still, the people of Ylisse proved overall kind during his time there. Perhaps these people were too, but he could not shake that it felt less inviting.
"There is a tavern a few streets down called the Cotton Tail. Wait there for us. I'll need to round up the gang. Fortunately we should all be in town unless there was a last minute mission. We can confer then."
"Very well," Lucina nodded, "We shall await your arrival."
Once left alone, Robin took Lucina's hand in his as they walked in search of the tavern, "Not exactly a romantic getaway."
"No," Lucina mused, "But honestly, it might be more up my alley anyway."
Robin frowned, "Perhaps, but you deserve the best."
Lucina gave his hand a light squeeze and smiled, "So long as we're together, that's more than enough for me."
All the same, Robin's smile back was half hearted at best.
"I believe that will be enough council for the day," Mikoto forced a smile, "Let's talk of more pleasant matters. How are preparations for the festival going?"
"E-everything is going well," Sakura looked directly at her mother, wishing she did not have to speak, but her family had thought she was ready to take on some responsibility with the preparations. She was the most invested of the siblings after all. "We're looking to have a big turnout."
"Excellent. I hope that this will provide all of us a chance to unwind from the stress both the people and our family has been enduring."
Kamui looked a bit concerned, sharing a glance with Reflet who was silently observing from the corner of the room. She did meet his gaze with a slight nod, but she otherwise did little throughout the meeting.
Fortunately, the festival was on track to be a grand affair. A break they could all use. Even Ryoma was seemingly more relaxed even if just marginally. It allowed the queen to breathe a bit easier knowing there was some silver lining to the meeting as she watched them eagerly discuss the plans.
After a while she dismissed the meeting. Hinoka and Sakura left to continue discussing the festival, Ryoma went to hear Saizo and Kagero's latest report, while Takumi and Kamui left talking about something with a smile on their lips.
Put more at ease, Mikoto left to take a walk herself. The castle was so beautiful this time of year, but it was not home. She did still find herself home sick from time to time. The royals and the late king Sumeragi had been exceptionally kind and accepting of her, but home was home.
It was on her walk that she heard a melody that brought the feelings of homesickness back in full force. Following the tune, she found herself in the gardens as the songstress sang of fate, birthrights, and conquest, the meaning of her words likely lost on her. Mikoto knew something of their meaning, but it was likely their secrets died with Arete if she had not passed them down.
The Queen watched from afar as she continued her song. Arete had deserved so much better. When they had split up after the attack, Mikoto had thought she had found a modicum of happiness in Nohr. Perhaps she did for a time, but it was not to last.
There was a reason that Mikoto had redirected their efforts to Azura all those years ago. If they could not reclaim her daughter, she would safeguard Arete's. Still, some, or rather, most of her children bore a fairly deep seated hatred of Nohr for one reason or another. She could not say she cared for them, and with Garon leading them, they were certainly a threat, but she decided that it was high time they knew. Time they knew the real reason she was willing to allow their increased military size.
But not quite yet. She would wait until after the festival. She would give them one more happy time before revealing the dark truth of their world.
The large double doors leading to the throne room still made even the crown prince somewhat uneasy. He had always held his father in high regard since he had seen him in action back in his youth, but it was hard to deny that the King had become more…intimidating as time went on.
"Brother!"
Xander turned and smiled as Corrin ran up to him, the rest of his siblings watching on. The ones still with them at least. Not letting himself get bogged down, Xander returned the smile as best he could. Only Camilla seemed to see through it.
"I see you managed the morning well, LIttle Princess. Are you ready for your meeting with His Highness?"
"As ready as I'll ever be," Corrin forced herself to breathe, "I'm a bit nervous though."
"You'll do fine," Camilla reassured, and Xander was grateful. Rallying troops was one thing, but personal reassurance was not something he excelled at, "Just be your usual charming self."
"Though, do remember to be respectful," Leo added, "Father does not take kindly to insubordination. Even from his children. Understood?"
"Yeah," Corrin nodded, "Let's do this."
The throne room of Nohr was a nearly cavernous room. Arguably bigger than it had any right to be. However, it did bear Nohr's trademark sparse furnishings. Almost more so than the rest of the castle, it was the pinnacle of harsh practicality for the most part. The major exception being the large carving in the ceiling. Something the King had installed a few years back.
"My daughter," King Garon's sunken eyes observed the young woman kneeling before him, "I hear you have finally defeated Xander in combat."
"Yes, my King," Xander bowed, "Her cunning has grown with her strength. She is a capable warrior with room for much growth."
"Good. I'm happy to hear it. You may rise." Corrin stood and swallowed as the King's gaze bore into her, "However, I have a test of my own before we continue. A test of your leadership and loyalty as well as your strength."
"I'm ready," The princess spoke with certainly.
"Excellent. Guards! Bring in the prisoners."
The royals watched as several Hoshidans were brought into the throne room.
"These Hoshidans were caught trying to sabotage one of our military outposts. A capital offense. Corrin, you will lead Gunter and your retainer in combat with them. I expect a resounding victory."
Corrin swallowed, her eyes slightly wide with horror as the Hoshidans were set loose against her. Gunter brought her out of her stupor however.
"Lady Corrin, distasteful as it may seem, you have a duty. More to the point, their weapons are quite real."
"R-right. Follow me, Gunter, Jakob. Try to spare them if you can."
"Understood, milady," Jakob responded without hesitation. Gunter took a moment longer, but he was behind her all the same. Corrin just wished she was half as confident in herself as they were in her.
Having rented out a private room in the tavern, Robin and Lucina awaited the arrival of the others playing a simple board game to pass the time. Like with all matters of strategy, Robin won every game, but Lucina was improving.
The hours rolled on as the two awaited their allies. The sun was already setting by the time they received a knock on their door. In walked Laslow and a familiar blonde man.
"So it is true!" The man smiled as Lucina tried to come to terms with what he was wearing, "It must be fate to have two legendary heroes join us on our quest. Forgive us for not including you before, but we had hoped to spare you any further turmoil. Alas, it must be time for you to pick up your blades yet again."
"Calm yourself, Odin," Gerome grunted after joining them.
"Gerome," Lucina gasped, "Your mask!"
"Yes, I don't need it anymore. Though, it's Geoffrey here."
"Right, pseudonyms," Lucina nodded, glancing over at her cousin, "So you chose Odin?"
"Quite right, my illustrious cousin."
Another knock heralded the arrival of Noire, "Noire, good to see you're well. What name are you going by here?"
"Nicole," She responded without a stutter earning a proud smile from Lucina, "I work with Odin as a retainer for one of the royals."
"Royal retainers, eh?" Robin rubbed his chin in thought.
"Yes, I'm actually a retainer to Crown Prince Xander," Laslow informed, "I won the position in a tournament."
"How'd that go?" Robin inquired.
"Fairly well. I'll admit, I held back a bit. Few have as much experience as we do."
"How surprisingly forward thinking of you not to show all your cards."
"Well, I didn't want to start out by killing some poor sap."
"What about you?" Robin asked the wyvern lord, "Where are you stationed?"
"I work with the wyvern knights. They have a considerable force, so it was not that hard to get a position."
"He's actually been put up for promotion by the eldest princess," Laslow added.
"Oh?" Robin raised his brow suggestively.
"It's just business. She has an eye for talent, and even without trying my best, I'm better than any of their riders with only the princess herself close to my level."
"Ever humble," Robin muttered, but he knew it was likely true. He knew what they were capable of better than most. Assuming Nohr was similar to Ylisse in terms of average competence, he was leaps and bounds better than the average soldier.
"So, is that every-" The door opened suddenly as a redhead joined them in the room.
"What was so important that you had to call me here on my off day?" She folded her arms, glaring at Laslow and notably avoiding looking at Odin.
Laslow merely cleared his throat and tilted his head at their guests. This made her drop her folded arms, "Oh…what are you two doing here?"
"Happy accident," Robin replied nonchalantly, "Figured we might as well help out. So, what do you do?"
She raised her brow, but she answered regardless, "I'm a retainer for Princess Camilla."
"Well, you've certainly done a good job at embedding yourselves into their ranks, yet you haven't managed to see this princess?"
"No," Geoffery scowled, "They are quite protective of her and thus very picky about who gets to go to the fortress that she lives at."
"Not surprising considering how she ended up in their care," Robin thought aloud, "And no one in Nohr knows she was kidnapped?"
"Very few," Laslow nodded, "And even fewer would admit it. I imagine the older royals know, or at the very least suspect it. Though Princess Elise would have been far too young to remember. She was born just a few weeks prior. The main reason we even know is because of our mutual friends."
"Wonderful," Robin sighed, "So, you're close to the royals. Tell me everything you know. Spare no details."
"I'm not sure this one is really…me," The crown prince muttered as his sister held up a flashy kimono.
"Hey, I'm trying here," Hinoka put the garment back as they continued browsing, "I don't know why you'd ask me to help pick you out something anyways. You could just see if Oboro has time for an order."
"I think her time, and thoughts, are occupied. I'd rather not break them up."
"Huh?" Hinoka looked at him strangely.
"Nevermind. I actually asked you to come so that we could talk."
"Oh?" The princess looked up from the rack, "What about?"
Ryoma looked around to see if anyone was listening before continuing. Despite attempts to keep a low profile, Ryoma was still, quite frankly, a mountain of a man making it hard for him to go unnoticed, "It is about the Kanpaku."
"What about her?"
"I don't…I am uncertain about her recent…suggestions."
"Who would have thought you'd be the one soft on Nohr?" There was a hint of accusation in her voice whether she intended it or not.
"You know I'm willing to do whatever it takes to bring justice to our family," Ryoma scowled, "But I have issues with how she seems to be actively undermining the Queen."
"Everything she's said has made sense and proven to be correct so far. Just because Mother needs a bit more convincing doesn't mean she's undermining her authority. You yourself have thought she was a bit soft on Nohr."
"Yes, but that's not the point. Despite my disagreements, I still respect the Queen. Doing it this way feels…wrong."
"Look," Hinoka was losing patience, "She's making sure we can finally bring justice to those Nohrians. If Mother needs a little nudge to do that, I don't mind. Or have you forgotten they took our sister?"
The crown prince's posture grew rigid and Hinoka was suddenly very aware at just how much he towered over her, "Not a day goes by where I don't think about that. Few would want to see that whole nation brought to justice more than me, but I still have my honor. If we're giving that up, we may very well turn into them if we aren't careful."
"We'll never be like them," Hinoka's anger was thinly veiled, "Nohr is full of tyrants and bullies, and the world would be better off without them." She threw a garment at Ryoma who caught it without looking, "Wear this. I've had enough of this nonsense."
As she left, Ryoma looked aimlessly at the garment, "Father, what would you have done? As if I don't already know. Our cause is just. I must remember that."
Corrin was huffing as she finally dealt with the last of the Hoshidans. They were tough, and Gunter was right, they had fought to kill. Not that Corrin could really blame them given the circumstances, but they had at least avoided any casualties.
"Passable," Garon spoke from his throne, seemingly not at all concerned about Corrin's safety, "Now, kill them."
"What?" Corrin was aghast at the command, "But, Father, they are defeated. Surely there is no reason to kill them."
"They committed crimes against Nohr. Their fate is sealed," Garon narrowed his eyes, "Now, kill them. Prove to me you are indeed a child of Nohr."
Corrin looked at the two closest Hoshidans, the strongest for certain. The ninja looked at her with conflicted emotions, but shame seemed the most prominent. Meanwhile the warrior woman glared with prideful defiance. Was there really nothing she could do?
"Ugh, fine," The younger prince stepped forward with an exasperated sigh, "It's our fault, really. We should have prepared you better."
"L-Leo?" Corrin looked at her brother, not sure what to make of anything at that point.
"I'll handle this rabble," With a sadistic smirk, Leo systematically cast spell after spell. When he was done, the Hoshidans were gone without a trace, and Corrin was utterly distraught.
Chapter 5: Chapter 4
Chapter Text
The siblings watched on as the King ordered their sister to kill the captives. Needless to say, it was not going well. In hindsight, they should have expected something like this to happen. Regardless of their lack of planning, something needed to be done lest their sister end up in even hotter water.
"Elise," Leo whispered, "Do you have your new staff with you?"
"Um, yeah," Elise struggled to look away from the scene, "Why?"
Leo whispered something in her ear, and she nodded at him in enthusiastic understanding before adopting her "game face" as she called it. Giving an encouraging nod, Leo put on his own "game face" of a cool and slightly sadistic prince.
Systematically, the prince cast highly complex and extremely flashy spells that just so happened to be nearly harmless. They were, however, excellent at hiding Elise's efforts off in the corner warping the prisoners to a remote cell for later retrieval. Corrin had better hope they did not make a scene.
"I apologize, my Liege," Leo bowed humbly, "Our dear sister is a bit sheltered from the realities of the world I'm afraid. I assure you, we will teach her how life here works."
Garon grumbled as he glared at the prince for long enough to make even Leo uneasy. Eventually, Xander came to their aid, having realized his gambit.
"You have my word, Father," The crown prince kneeled, "We will work on it. You'd be hard pressed to find someone as clever or who will fight as hard for her people as Corrin."
"Hmm, very well. I shall excuse this act of defiance if she can complete a mission for me…"
"So," Odin watched the tactician in anticipation, "What do you think?"
Robin looked to his wife who gestured for him to speak. Right, he was the master tactician. Forcing himself to rise from his seat, he started pacing. "You've done a good job of embedding yourselves. For now, keep doing what you're doing. Earn their trust and don't let them know about us or our allies on the other side of the border."
Furrowing his brow, Robin continued, "I would like to get a firsthand idea of the situation in Hoshido. That might should be our next destination. Plus, I'm sure Lucina would like to see Cy-ahem, Caeda again."
"If you're going to try a border crossing, I would suggest going through Nestra," Geoffery suggested, "A neutral nation to the southeast."
Lucina nodded, "Thank you, we'll make sure to go that way when we depart."
"Keep us apprised of any updates," Robin came to a stop, "We're all in deep now. Let's do this right."
"Leo!" Corrin was on the verge of a freak out after they left the throne room, "How could you?"
"Careful, dear," Camilla defended her younger brother, "Young Leo here did you quite a favor."
"By killing those people?" Corrin fought back angry tears.
"By not killing them."
"I thought you were up to something," Xander put a hand on his brother's shoulder, "Clever, if not risky."
"Hey!" Elise puffed up her cheeks, "I helped too!"
"Yes you did," Leo ruffled her hair, "You did good. Now," The blonde faced his middle sister, "If you would like, you can help ferry your prisoners out of here."
"Why are you just sitting there?" Rinkah growled at the ninja as he sat meditating in the middle of the locked store room. Meanwhile, the flame tribe princess was busy trying to bash something in so that they could escape, "Aren't you supposed to be a master of escape?"
"The Nohrians are increasingly wise to our methods," He replied matter-of-factly, "Besides, they clearly spared us for some reason. I would like to see what that is."
"And if they saved us to torture us?" Rinkah beat her fists against the door to no avail.
"I do not think so. That Corrin…she's special. I want to confirm my suspicions if possible."
"Ugh," Rinkah finally gave up on the door and sat next to the ninja. With the silence grating on her, she looked at her companion and slowly tried to mimic his posture.
This lasted until they could hear someone opening the door. Before they could even stand, a glowing hand was pointed at them.
"I suggest you don't cause trouble. If you want to live, come quickly and quietly."
"Why you-"
The ninja finally stood up, grabbing Rinkah by the arm, "Thank you, we graciously accept your offer."
The prince nodded and led the captives outside. Led into a darkened courtyard, Kaze perked up seeing the princess from before waiting on them.
"Leo!" She beamed, "You did it!"
"I told you they were safe," He smirked, "Though one of them looks to have nearly broken her hand trying to escape."
"You," The ninja spoke up, "Why would you spare us? We're your enemies."
Corrin smiled kindly, "Today, maybe, but I long for the day that we aren't. I would rather do that without bloodshed if I can."
"Then you're hopelessly naive," Rinkah massaged her wrist, "But I owe you my life. That's a debt I won't soon forget."
"Thank you. I hope we can meet again."
"I should also remind you," Leo cleared his throat, "That if you are found operating against Nohr again, my sister here likely won't be there to save you. I shouldn't have to tell you we don't take kindly to repeat offenders."
"Understood," Kaze spoke solemnly with the understanding that he would be summarily executed. They were freed due to mercy, but that mercy had its limits. If his people called upon him again, would he still work on such missions? Given what he saw, he was not sure he had a choice.
"I must ask though," The ninja kept a humble tone, realizing he was very much in the weaker position, "Who are you, exactly?"
"I'm Corrin," The princess put a hand over her chest, "Princess of Nohr."
"Corrin," Leo closed his eyes realizing that the ninja was fishing, recongnizing the suspicion veiled in his words and face. Though there was not much he could do. He instead focused on the Hoshidans, "Hurry on your way. The next patrol will be here any minute. If you're caught, you'll be disposed of quickly and quietly."
"Understood. Rinkah, let's go."
The warrior grumbled, but acquisessed and followed the ninja out of the castle with their small team. They were barely even out of sight before Leo let out a sigh. He had not anticipated that one of them might recognize her.
"Let's go. I shouldn't have brought you to see the enemy," The prince walked forward with his arms behind his back, hiding just how concerned he was over this little incident. If that Hoshidan put two and two together….
"But they were disarmed," Corrin turned to face him smiling, "I don't see why it would matter. Maybe it will help if they see that the Nohrian royalty isn't so bad."
Leo's face twitched, "Life isn't always that simple."
"Why can't it be?" Corrin asked sincerely, and for the briefest of moments, Leo considered a simpler world, but he quickly shook himself of such nonsense. The world was what it was, and they just had to make due with what they had to work with.
"If life were as simple as you thought it was, then maybe the world would be a better place, but I operate in the real world. That requires tough decisions sometimes."
Corrin looked contemplative for a bit, "Maybe you're right, but I'd like to believe that we can come to an understanding."
Leo ruffled her hair, "And that optimism is part of why people like you so much. This place has a way of crushing that though. Just be certain that you don't mistake naivety for optimism."
"I'll be careful, I promise."
"Somehow I doubt that," Leo smiled and shook his head, "But that's what family is for. We'll look out for you. Just don't do anything too reckless."
Corrin giggled, "I'll try."
"Here, I made you a box lunch to take with you," The elder princess handed her sister a carefully packaged meal. Much to Corrin's embarrassment.
"Camilla, you don't have to pack my lunch. I'm not a kid," Despite her protests, her pouts were not exactly convincing anyone of her words.
"I know, I know. It's just that I'm concerned about you going on your first mission."
"I have every confidence in her ability to complete such a routine mission," Xander provided a vote of confidence, "It's the matter of Hans that I'm truly concerned about. I do not know what Father is thinking by putting him on this expedition. Keep your eyes on him. I don't trust him."
"I will, Xander, and I'll have Gunter and Jakob with me. I'm sure I'll be fine."
"I suppose you're right. Gunter is a capable soldier and I know few people as devoted to their liege as Jakob. I'll see you soon, Little Princess."
"I'll make you all proud."
"I'm sure you will," Camilla smiled.
"Now hurry along before you're late," Leo reminded her.
"Oh! Right!" Corrin ran off waving. After waving back, Camila turned to Xander.
"We're following her, right?"
"Absolutely. Get ready to ride. I won't leave her fate to that criminal."
It was late by the time they managed to return to Castle Krakenburg. Selena had been the first to leave, and it was already dark when she stepped outside. While Robin and Lucina's arrival was certainly a surprise, she did hope that they might help end this quickly even if it was for selfish reasons.
She knew they had no right to drag those two into this after everything they had done for them, but the redhead had yet to beat all her self centered ways. She just wanted this to be over with, and the sooner the better.
However, until that day came, she still had her duties as a retainer to uphold. If she was going to do it, she was going to be the best at it. Though, before she could check and see if Lady Camilla had anything for her to do, she would need to find her which was proving more difficult than usual. She would usually let her and Beruka know when she was going somewhere.
She was not in her study, her room, or the training yard. The latter though, did yield some results, however, as she found her fellow retainer hard at work long after most had called it a night.
"Beruka," Selena put her hands on her hips, "Where's Princess Camilla?" At first, she did not respond, forcing Selena to get a bit more forceful, "Hey, I asked a question!"
Barely glancing at her, Beruka did not stop swinging her heavy training ax but she did finally answer, "She and the other royals left on an emergency mission. They were traveling light."
"What? What kind of mission?" Selena did not like the sounds of a mission involving all the royals.
"Don't know, didn't ask."
The redhead groaned, "Okay, do you know where they went?"
"East," The retainer kept swinging her ax, "You're not planning on following them, are you?"
"Pfft, no, of course not. Vacation is vacation. Excuse me for wanting to be on top of things."
"Sure," Came the monotone response.
"This is why I'm Camilla's favorite," Severa flipped one of her twintails as she walked away. Her cool facade hid a certain dread though.
"So this is the Bottomless Canyon," Corrin looked on in awe at the massive crevice in the face of the continent, "It really does look like it. Has no one really been to the bottom?"
"There are no recorded expeditions to the bottom," Gunter replied, "At least not any successful ones. And the wind currents have proven too much for flying mounts to safely descend so the only way would be on foot."
"Or to jump," Jakob suggested in a dry tone, "Not that we'd be able to hear about what they found at the bottom."
"What could make something so massive?"
"Legend has it that it was created in an ancient war between the Dawn and Dusk Dragons," Gunter stared at the crevice with his hands folded behind his back, "Supposedly that was the only thing that could produce such a scar on the land this."
"Talk, talk, talk," Hans mocked with his sinister looking ax over his shoulder, "Do you do anything else? Let's get this operation underway."
"Crudely put," Jakob scowled at the vulgar man, "But we are nearing the location of the fort. We should prepare to investigate."
"It shouldn't be far," Gunter put on an air of professionalism, "Follow me."
Gunter led them up the canyon a little ways until they came to a rickety bridge in sight of the fortress. It was certainly not an inviting vista to say the least. The howling wind from the canyon shot up to make the land feel much colder than normal as harsh rock greeted them in the form of a few outcroppings.
"Why would anyone build a fort here?" Corrin looked back at the creaking bridge as they stepped onto a still precarious feeling rock pillar.
"This canyon makes up the largest border between Nohr and Hoshido," Jakob informed, "It's only natural they would want fortifications no matter how treacherous the landscape."
"This particular fort was abandoned by Nohr many years ago, but with rising tensions, it makes sense to look into reactivating it, or at least making sure the enemy hasn't."
"Heh, looks like somebody's already home," Hans smirked as he brandished his obsidian ax, "Excellent!"
"Hans! Wait!" Corrin reached out, but the man was long gone as he charged off to fight the Hoshidans that had set up shop in the old fort. "Ugh! Why are they even here?"
"An already built but abandoned fort in a strategic location? Seems self explanatory to me." Jakob pulled out a knife, "Regardless, we have a job to do."
Corrin hated it, but her butler was correct. The King would want these Hoshidans dealt with, and it fell to Corrin to lead this small force to do just that. Better them than Hans. Gunter and Jakob she could reign in at least. Hans was like a monster looking only to slaughter.
"Gunter, form a vanguard, break their lines. Jakob, come with me to clean up afterwards. If possible, avoid lethal force."
"Pardon?" Jakob raised his brow and stopped in his tracks, "This is live combat."
"I know, but I don't want to kill if I can avoid it. Besides, best not to make tensions worse than we have to."
"She has a point," Gunter sighed, "It will not be easy, but by your command, we shall try."
With that command, Corrin's team tried to minimize the amount damage Hans could do. In an ironic if not insulting turn of events, the madman seemingly took a stray arrow to the shoulder and fell back leaving Corrin and the others to deal with his mess. This left the princess to huff, but she would have to ask Xander what they should do after she got back.
Fortunately, they were able to force the Hoshidans to retreat. Under Corrin's orders they let them. They were just here to evaluate the fortress anyway. Corrin's recommendation was certainly going to be a thumb's down.
"I see you survived," Hans met them at the far edge of the bridge back to the Nohrian side of the canyon looking far less worse for wear than Corrin would have thought.
"Hans!" Corrin shouted, "What were you thinking? Are you trying to get someone killed?"
"Why, yes. You, in fact," His grin was malicious as he readied his obsidian ax, "Nothing personal, but I do love my job."
"Milady!" Gunter moved to defend his princess as the rogue went to strike. Steel hit steel, however, it was not the impact any of them were expecting. Instead of Gunter taking a strike he was not fully prepared for, a strange new fighter had just parried the blow with ease.
"What?" Hans snarled, "Who are you?"
"You're in no position to ask questions," Corrin's mouth hung open slightly as a robed man calmly walked toward the bridge toward them. He turned his attention to Corrin, "Go. We'll handle this."
His tone did not leave much room for arguing and Corrin nodded to her retainer and knight, but she still wanted to know, "Who are you?"
"An ally." He replied cryptically as he came to flank Hans while the rest of them ran past on his right. "Robin."
"I don't know who you are, but you're messing with the wrong man. I got friends in high places."
"Hmph," The tactician huffed, "Yes, and you attempted to kill a princess and her subordinates. Now, even if you were ordered to do so, do you really think that you're important enough to not be a fall guy if pressed on it?"
The criminal's confidence drained from his face as he went more pale than usual, "I, er."
"Now, you can submit to us, and answer all of our questions, or we can leave you to her very protective siblings. Your call."
The library was dark, only a single candle lit the cavernous labyrinth of knowledge. Naturally, they kept fire in there to a minimum, so tracking a late night reader was not difficult.
"There you are, child," An exasperated manakete yawned as she stopped by the table the bluenette was sitting at, "It is late, even by your standards."
"Huh?" She looked up from a book, "Oh, sorry. Got a bit carried away."
"You know," Tiki folded her arms, "When I agreed to watch you while your parents were away, I did not expect it to be so much work. Perhaps I owe Bantu an apology."
"It's not like I need a babysitter," She defiantly crossed her arms, "I'm an adult. You know, probably."
"The greenhouse you nearly burnt down begs to differ."
"That was an accident, and I already apologized to Grandmother."
Tiki sighed and looked at the open tome in front of the girl, "What has you up so late anyway?"
"Oh, I was just brushing up on my history. I kinda forgot a lot of it."
"Ah, I suppose I cannot fault you for that. Ylisse's history is also yours in a manner of speaking, though I cannot speak for differences in your history and ours."
"Well, can't hurt to learn, though some of these books are frustratingly vague. If they can agree at all. Hey," Morgan's face lit up, "You lived through it, right? Got any juicy insights?"
"I spent a lot of time asleep," Tiki sighed, "But let's see, I can tell you some stories from my past I suppose. Tomorrow."
"Deal."
Chapter 6: Chapter 6
Chapter Text
“Come on, Subaki!” The swordswoman yelled as she readjusted the box in her hands, “Lady Sakura is waiting for us.”
“Which of us is carrying more, mind you?” The sky knight was more than a bit perturbed, though that was somewhat the norm ever since their newest retainers had joined.
“You wouldn’t have to carry so much at a time if you didn’t spend so much time on your hair. You spend more time on it than Lady Sakura.”
“I also happen to have more of it.”
“You also spend more time on it than I do. More than both of us combined.”
The knight grumbled in a rather imperfect manner, “Your point?”
“Okay, okay, you've been quite testy lately. I’m sure that has something to do with one of our newest recruits.”
“Hah, ‘recruit,’” The redhead scoffed, “She is no mere recruit. No one is that skilled naturally. I’d bet my ponytail on it.”
“You just can’t stand to see someone better than you, can you?”
“No!” Yes, “It’s just very suspicious to have a random stranger suddenly ace the sky knight exam, shattering all the records, and then signing on as a retainer to one of the royal siblings.”
“I think you’re just being petty.”
“Oh, like you’re one to talk.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I happen to know that you can hold quite a grudge. Remember when poor Setsuna accidentally ripped your garb while training?”
“That was a matter of decency!” The samurai went red.
“It was at the hem of your garment,” She replied smugly, “What was it you did to her over a month later…”
“Alright, alright,” The samurai yielded, “Let’s just…focus on helping Lady Sakura.”
“Yes,” She beamed triumphantly, “Let’s.”
“I haven’t managed to find anything suspicious,” Kamui stood at attention across from the desk, “But I’ll keep looking.”
“Good,” The twintailed woman smiled warmly from behind her desk, “We must remain vigilant. I trust that you won’t let anything happen to the Queen.”
“You have my word,” Kamui bowed, “Though, if I may ask, what intel do you have suggesting they will make a move? Not that I doubt it, I’m just curious.”
“I’ve heard some disturbing tidbits from my sources. I hope you’ll understand if they wish to remain anonymous, but I assure you that they are quite reliable sources of intel.”
“Of course. I’d never want to endanger an asset. Though it’s hard to believe that there would be Nohrians willing to help.”
“A rarity, I assure you, Prince. They are not exactly the most upright individuals, but they serve their purposes.”
“I see. Well, I thank you for your service.”
“Hey!” A banging on the door gained their attention, “Kamui! We promised to help Sakura decorate. You’d better not leave me alone to do it.”
Reflet smiled, “Go, don’t keep your siblings waiting.”
“Thank you,” Kamui bowed before running off. Once the door was slid closed and the royals were out of ear shot, Reflet dropped her smile. She walked over to the window looking out almost absently.
Ryoma was sitting cross legged in the gardens as cherry blossom petals fell on him. It was a serene sight had his eyes been open to look at it. The sword across his lap did not budge as he calmed his thoughts trying to make sense of the hard situation he found himself in.
“I take it your mission was a success?” He suddenly called out without opening his eyes.
“Perceptive as ever, my prince,” A brunette ninja emerged from the shadows as a redheaded man dropped down from a nearby wall.
“You taught me well,” The crown prince finally opened his eyes as he stood to greet his retainers, “So, what did you learn?”
“It would seem that the Kampaku’s intelligence was correct as best we can tell. The Nohrians are increasing their military might.”
“That is troubling to say the least. I hate to admit it, but she may have a point.”
Kagero looked over to Saizo before speaking out when she realized he would not, “My lord, we also received word that Kaze has gone missing behind enemy lines.”
“What?” Ryoma’s expression grew from serious contemplation to flared concern, “Saizo, were you not going to mention this?”
“He knew the risks,” The ninja replied coldly, “We all do.”
“He’s your brother!” Ryoma stood his ground as one of the few who would push back against Saizo’s apparent callousness, “Where was he taken?”
The redhead sighed, “This is utter folly. A rescue attempt would be suicide. He was in the heart of Nohrian territory. We don’t know where he was taken, but even we would hard pressed to get to him. If he is still alive, and that is a big if. You know what Nohr does to saboteurs.”
“Saboteur? You mean this was not just an intelligence gathering mission?”
“You didn’t know?” The ninja raised a brow, “I simply know that it may have involved sabotage from some of my contacts and that the mission came from the Queen’s office.”
Ryoma frowned, looking down to the nearby shrubbery. He hated feeling powerless. He and Kaze may not have been close, but his family had served faithfully for generations.
“I…am truly sorry for your loss.”
Saizo looked at him for a moment, “As I said, he knew the risks. May he have died with honor.”
“...Yes. Let us remember him honorably.”
“It really is beautiful this time of year,” The songstress commented as she walked alongside the queen. Stopping to admire a cherry blossom tree, she closed her eyes thoughtfully, “I wish Mother could have seen it.”
“I’m sure she found beauty in her old home,” Mikoto attempted to soothe the bluenette.
“Perhaps she did,” Azura opened her eyes, “But if she did, I could not see it. All I saw was darkness and cruelty.”
“Azura…” Mikoto trailed off sorrowfully.
“I’m sorry. I know you do not desire conflict, and neither do I, but I cannot see them as a force for good.”
Mikoto looked at the very same cherry blossoms, “I suppose that is understandable, but just do not let your bitterness prevent you from seeing clearly. It can be such a nasty thing, and very hard to weed out once it has taken root.”
“I…understand.”
“We have much to discuss after the festival, all of us,” She turned her gaze back to her charge, “But for now, enjoy yourself. At least try to have some fun.”
“I can try,” Was the best Azura could give.
“Good. Forget about Nohr for a while. Now come, I want your opinion on entertainment.”
“Thanks for all your help today!” Sakura beamed at her siblings and retainers, “I really hope people like all the hard work we did on the castle.”
“I’m sure they will,” Hinoka offered encouragement. She was just happy to see her younger sister so engaged. She did like it when people were happy after all, and the festival was the perfect fit for her.
“Yeah, but maybe you should rest for a bit,” Takumi suggested seeing his sister stifle a yawn, “The palace is taken care of and the organizers will handle the town.”
“Are you sure there’s nothing more I can do?”
“You could do plenty,” Hinoka folded her arms, “But you’ve done enough. Relax, and make plans to enjoy the festivities with everyone else.”
“O-okay,” Sakura swayed awkwardly, “If you’re sure it’s okay.”
“We’re sure,” Takumi smirked and Sakura bowed before scampering off. Though, once she was gone, the prince’s smirk turned to his older sister, “You’re the last person I ever expected to tell someone to take a break.”
“Like you’re one to talk,” Hinoka bristled at the jab.
“Hmph, I like to be ready.”
“And I want my sister back. What do you want, Takumi?”
“I want what we all really want. Well, except maybe Sakura. I want them to pay.”
“Yeah,” Even Hinoka could never quite get used to the cold anger Takumi held for Nohr, “Just don’t be reckless. I don’t want you and Kamui getting yourselves in trouble.”
The sniper scoffed, “I think I’d be the one going after him to save his tail.”
“Maybe you’re right. Just look after each other.”
“You make it sound like we’re going to war, but we will. Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it.”
Mikoto looked out over the festival, content that her people were enjoying themselves. They may not have been her people by birth, but they had taken her in during her time of need. Sumeragi was nothing but kind to her and ensured she would be accepted as one of their own. Much like Arete in Nohr, few knew that this was not the land of her birth or that Mikoto was not her birth name.
All the same, they were her people and she was their queen. Life had been kinder to her than it had been to Arete, and she hoped to use the position she had been granted to make a difference. To preserve this happiness and maybe even spread it.
More than all that though, she loved seeing her children happy and smiling. Even Kamui despite the great burden he had placed upon himself. They all missed her, none more so than herself, but Kamui had a special bond with her. She was worried about the bitterness that he might fester, but he had them to help balance his emotions. At least, in theory.
Her children all watched on happily as she stepped out past the table of presents to address the people. Reflet stood to the side, eying the gathered crowd. Kamui saw a soldier come whisper something to her causing her to leave with him. The prince wanted to follow, but custom dictated he stay for his mother’s speech.
“My people,” Mikoto stood smiling in the town square, “It does my heart well to see you all happy. Today is an important day to every Hoshidan. Today marks the day that the founders came together as a people to form this great nation. It is a day of celebration in our homeland as well as reflection on why we love it so.”
As the speech continued, Takumi was the first to notice something glowing on the table. Kamui also picked up on it, but they were too late to do anything as a cloaked figure summoned the object, a sword it seemed, to his hands. Said figure was making his way up to the stage.
“I hope to have many more of these in the future. We all know that these are troubling times, but I am confident that no matter what happens, Hoshido will endure. We must stand, together, firmly, as a-”
Kamui was already running for his mother when she finally noticed the assailant. However, she stopped, mouth agape at what she saw as the hooded man approached and she could see the face underneath.
“H-how-grck!” The robed assailant wasted no time in running her through with ease while she had struggled to make sense of what she saw.
“Mother!” Kamui screamed as he slid beside her while Takumi fired at the assassin only to have each arrow blocked with ease.
“Hinoka!” Ryoma barked with no room to question, “Evacuate the square! Everyone!”
“R-right!”
“Mother,” Kamui reached for Mikoto’s hand, “Don’t worry, I’ll get you to a healer. Just relax and breathe.”
She managed to pull a hand up to his cheek. It was terribly weak and shaky. “My sweet baby boy…how much you’ve grown…I wish I could have seen you reunite with your sister…”
“No,” He clutched her hand, “You will, just hold on a little longer.”
Mikoto forced a weak smile, “Be strong…my child…do not…let bitterness…consume you…”
“Mom?” Kamui panicked as the queen went limp, “Mom?! Wake up!”
“Kamui,” Takumi put a hand on his shoulder, “It’s…she’s gone…”
Slowly laying his mother to rest against the stone pavement, Kamui did not move for minutes. He tuned out the panic. Ryoma’s fight with the assailant. All of it. He just stared at his deceased mother. Then, slowly, he looked up, his eyes full of rage.
At the same time, Ryoma was doing all that he could to best the assailant, but despite being declared the best samurai in all Hoshido, he found himself on the back foot. “Just who are you? Why have you done this? Answer me!”
No words left the assailant as he almost effortlessly deflected the few blows that even got close to hitting him. With his anger and frustration threatening to make him sloppy, Ryoma tried to center his focus, but a horrific cry broke his concentration. Though roar may have been more accurate.
“Uh, Ryoma,” Takumi called out as he backed away, everything else seemingly forgotten at the moment. The prince looked back just long enough to see what had his brother sounding so distressed. He was not quite sure what he was looking at initially.
The crown prince stepped back as his brother had turned into something monstrous. Ryoma hesitated as he held his blade forward, Whatever stood before the crown prince ignored him though. Instead, the four legged creature charged past Ryoma in what he could only describe as a blind rage.
The assailant’s posture betrayed the first actual bit of concern for the whole fight upon seeing the beast rush his position. However, if he was actually afraid, his actions did not show it as he deftly avoided the enraged prince.
The resulting battle, though chase may have been more accurate, destroyed much of the square where just a few minutes prior they had been celebrating their nation. Now it was a scene of desperation as the maddened Kamui tore through anything in his way to get to the assailant.
He reared his head back while a deep guttural growl escaped through sharp teeth. Kamui roared as a torrent of water spewed from his maw at a pressure that shattered a stone pillar behind where the robed figure had been standing moments prior.
At that point, the assailant seemingly almost disappeared, he was so quick, but Ryoma did not have time to ponder whether he was seeing things. Without a subject for his ire, the draconic prince stalked up to his older brother, and it was not a friendly approach.
The crown prince was forced to take a defensive stance. He did not want to raise his blade against his brother, if that really was Kamui, but the younger prince did not look like he was going to stand down anytime soon.
Ryoma pulled back, ready to strike if he had to when both princes’ heads turned at the sound of a lovely if not melancholic voice.
“You are the ocean’s gray waves.”
Azura walked between the princes, offering Ryoma only a sidelong glance as she focused on Kamui. She never stopped singing as her pendant glowed. She reached out a hand and Kamui backed up slightly, but he was also much calmer. The prince staggered a bit before finally lowering to the ground and drifting off to sleep.
Azura panted while Kamui slowly returned to human form. She supported herself on her lance and pushed herself back up straight. She turned her head to Ryoma finally, “We should move him to his room. I need to talk to him.”
“Right,” Ryoma nodded. He had questions, but now was not the time. Looking around the square even as he picked his brother up, he was filled with rage. For now, it was time to mourn.
Then it was time to act.
Chapter Text
A hefty silence fell over the throne room as Ryoma stared at the empty throne, refusing to take his place there until justice had been served. Instead he turned to face his late mother's chief advisor.
"Report. How did this happen?" The rage in his voice was clear, but it was not directed at her. Frankly, he was not sure where to direct it. Right now, he wanted answers.
"I must apologize," Reflet bowed humbly to the heir apparent, "I had tried to increase security for the event. The sword came in Nohr's official convoy. Everything checked out, so turning it away would not have been received well."
"So it was Nohr!" Takumi shouted, but Ryoma silenced him with a raised hand.
"Sending a ceremonial sword itself is not a crime. Continue."
"I was called away shortly before the assassination. I had received word of suspicious ninja on the palace grounds. Sure enough, I found two men dressed like ninja that did not move like Hoshidan ninja. Unfortunately, we were unable to take them alive, but upon inspection, it was clear they were Nohrian. One of the men even carried a letter to his wife in Nohr. There was not enough evidence to determine if they were backup or planning to assassinate other targets."
"Those dogs!" Hinoka punched her palm, "I'll kill them myself!"
"The assailant fought like a samurai," Ryoma finally stated, silencing the others present, "A good one. He was no mere imposter. He was a master."
"Could he be a traitor?" Reflet put forward.
"I have a hard time believing a samurai would ever turn against Hoshido, but…I see no other explanation for that level of skill."
"So we're not letting them get away with this, right?" Takumi already had Fujin Yumi in his hand, ready for action.
Ryoma clenched his fists. His mother would not approve, but he could not stand idly by. He would deliver her justice if it were the last thing he did.
"No, we won't. Prepare your troops. We march at dawn."
The siblings nodded and made a hasty retreat. Reflet was about to follow, but Ryoma asked her to stay.
"What can I help you with, my liege?"
"Kaze was sent on a sabotage mission a while back. From my mother's office. Do you know anything about this?"
"I didn't know she was so proactive."
"She wasn't," The prince narrowed his eyes, "But her office consists of many heads."
"If you're insinuating that I ordered it, I must remind you that I lack the authority to do so, and I assure you she never asked my advice for such a mission."
"I see. You are dismissed. We will be counting on you."
"Of course. I will do all I can to ensure victory in the coming conflict."
Conflict. It still did not seem real to Ryoma, but they were indeed going to war.
"Corrin!" Camilla roped Corrin into a suffocating hug as they reunited in the dark forest bordering the canyon.
"Camilla?" Corrin gasped once she was finally released from the vice grip. She was not alone either, "Xander? Leo? Elise too? What are you doing here?"
"I did not feel comfortable sending you out with that criminal," Xander replied, "So we came to keep an eye on things. Unfortunately we were not as quick as I would have liked." Looking around, the prince did not see the man in question, "Where is Hans?"
"Your people took care of him," Corrin's reply did not put the royals at ease, however.
"People? I didn't send any advance troops. We kept this quite secret to avoid Father finding out."
"Then who was that man who saved me," Corrin scanned the ground cautiously, "There was a woman with him too."
"I don't care who they are," Camilla responded, "If they came to your aid, I owe them my thanks."
"Still," Leo rubbed his chin, "We can't just ignore free agents like this."
"Why not?" Elise tilted her head.
"Unaccounted for elements are unpredictable," Leo explained, "We are already in a tense political situation. We really don't need external factors working to destabilize the delicate balance of power."
"Er, about that," Corrin sighed, "That fort wasn't empty. We found Hoshidan troops. Hans forced us into a fight."
This revelation brought on a somber mood, and made them forget the strangers for now.
"That's not good," Xander frowned harshly, eyes closed, "We must report to the King. This could escalate tensions."
"It's all my fault," Corrin was despondent, "I'm sorry."
"Don't blame yourself, dear."
"She's right," Xander put a reassuring hand on her shoulder, "This is Hans' work. I still have no idea why he was assigned to this mission. Just another question for us. Let us see if we can get any answers and prevent this from escalating further."
"Don't worry, if anyone can sort this out, it's Xander."
"Thank you, Camilla," Corrin tried to smile, but it fell flat.
"He says he was given orders to cause as much mayhem with the Hoshidans as possible," Lucina declared somberly as she joined her husband, "He also seems to have enjoyed the orders."
Robin looked at her in surprise, "When did you learn to interrogate someone so effectively?"
"Compared to a Grimleal, he was not hard to break," Lucina stated matter of factly, and knowing her past, Robin dropped the topic.
"Did he say why he was ordered to cause problems?"
"He says he did not ask. The orders came from the King's chief advisor and strategist."
"So," Robin's gaze fell earthward as he accepted reality, "The rot goes high. This won't be easy."
"When is anything we do?" Lucina smiled wistfully as she placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Heh," He forced a smirk, "True enough. We should hurry and tell the others though."
"What about him?" Lucina tilted her head back toward the rogue.
"A witness won't hurt. We can turn him over to the royals. They don't seem to be in on this."
"You think I'm going back to have my head be put on a platter?" Hans shouted as he forced himself onto his feet.
"You can't honestly think you can outrun us."
"Hah! I'm no mere criminal," The man bolted, "I'll be a king, you'll see!"
Robin sighed and pulled out a tome. As he was casting, the worn bridge finally gave way under the strain and a plank fell out from under the ruffian as he attempted his escape. He tried to grab onto another plank, but only succeeded in pulling it down with him.
"Well, there goes our witness," Robin dropped his hand.
"We'll have to make do without him," Lucina sighed, "Let's hope you're quite convincing."
"No pressure."
"Ngh, where am I?" As Kamui shifted, his little sister rushed to his side.
"You're awake!"
"Yes, I am," Kamui awkwardly hugged Sakura back, "What happened?"
"Sakura," Azura spoke from the other side of the room as she stood from her seat, "Can you please go tell the others that he's awake now?"
"O-oh, yeah! I'll do that!"
As she scampered out, Kamui faced the bluenette, "Did…"
"That really happen? Unfortunately." The songstress walked forward holding out a stone, "You possess a great and sometimes terrible power. I found this stone among your mother's things. She had two. One for you. One for-"
"My sister," Kamui looked downtrodden, "So she's really…gone?"
"Yes. It looks like it was a Nohrian plot."
Kamui clenched his fists, "Those animals! I'll make them pay for this."
"For now you need to rest."
"No, I want to see the square," The prince sat up, "Will you come with me?"
"...Very well."
The square was still a mess after his little rampage, and Kamui was not sure which hurt more. That his mother was dead, or that he had been the one to do this damage.
"Did I…hurt anyone?"
"No, fortunately. I was able to subdue you before it came to that. With that dragon stone, you shouldn't have to worry about losing control again."
Kamui held the bright silvery stone aloft in the sunlight, "It's pretty…you said Mother also had one for my sister."
"Yes, that stone's sister stone. The two are said to be relics of the ancients themselves."
"But…the others don't have one."
"...no, they don't. This is not their burden to bear."
Kamui closed his eyes and looked up, reminded for the first time in a long time how different he was. It was an open secret, but he had never asked for confirmation before. Still, they were his family, "Then I'll use this power to avenge her. I promise you that. I'm worried about my sister though. She doesn't have her stone."
"Mikoto started to think you might not need yours. It seems the extreme rage and grief is what triggered your transformation. She might not have had need of hers yet."
"Sis…" Kamui whispered, "Just hang in there. A little longer. I won't stop at anything to get you back."
"Kamui…"
As the prince thought of his sister, the slightest sound of stone cracking could be heard. This put the draconic prince on high alert as he took a defensive stance in front of Azura, however, the sound was coming from the stone statue that Kamui had damaged in his rampage.
From within the damaged statue, a sword flew out, destroying most of what was left as it found a home in Kamui's palm. Blinking, Kamui held it aloft.
"The Yato? But how?"
"It seems it has chosen you," Azura spoke softly, "I wonder if Mikoto knew the lost blade was in the town square the whole time? Regardless, I believe it chose well."
"Chosen…me…"
"Nice sword," A tired voice attempted to sound bemused.
Kamui and Azura rounded to see the intruder, but both immediately dropped their guards upon seeing him.
"Kaze!" Kamui smiled at the good news, "You're back."
"Yes, but I have no time to chat. I have urgent news for the Queen."
The sibling duo grew somber at the mention of the queen. The songstress was the first to speak, "Queen Mikoto…is dead."
"She is?" Kaze thought for a moment, "My deepest condolences. I wish I had been here to protect her."
"Thanks," Kamui muttered.
"Still, I must speak with crown prince Ryoma. It is important."
Kamui blinked, "Okay, I'll take you to him."
"Good. This has to do with you as well. Let us make haste."
"I see," Garon did not budge as he received Corrin's report, "You performed adequately. If Hans shows himself, you may deal with him as you see fit, Xander."
"Thank you, Father," The crown prince knelt with the distinct impression this was not an order he wanted to give.
"Now we must prepare. Hoshido has been acting increasingly aggressive. We cannot let this go unanswered."
His words made the assembled royals uncomfortable, but they did not voice these concerns. Instead, Leo suggested a more diplomatic option.
"Perhaps we could send an envoy and use this incident to boost our negotiating power. This was a clear violation of our border treaty. They would be hard pressed to deny us I think."
Garon hummed, though it sounded more like a grumble as he tapped a clawed gauntlet finger against the throne, "Your plan has some merit, boy. Since it was your idea, I want you to prepare the demands. Do not disappoint me."
"Of course, my King."
"The rest of you are dismissed, but remain on alert. Keep your troops at the ready."
The mood in Hoshido was somber, though not exactly low. The people were eager for revenge. They had been hurt, and they wanted to hurt Nohr back. This was true for most soldiers. Most, except for Kamui's retainers.
"This is bad," Brad paced back and forth, "Real bad."
Caeda watched him pace with an unusually hard expression, "Come on, that's no way for a hero to act!"
"I ain't no hero!" Brad snapped, "What I wouldn't give to have Lucina here."
"Hey, we can't rely on sis to save our bacon all the time. It's time to rise up and embrace your heroic heritage!"
"We're about to be shipped off to some war that shouldn't even be happening. In a world we weren't born in. I think that's well deserving of some good ol' gloom and doom."
"I mean, yeah, it's not great," Caeda put on her best hero smile with her fists on her hips, "But we've lived through worse. We just gotta find a way to put an end to this war."
"Fat chance of that. We don't even know where this guy is," Brad propped himself against the wall, "I ain't cut out for this."
"Hey!" Caeda sternly stomped her foot, "You're a hero like us. We'll figure something out. It's what heroes do."
"Heh, you really are somethin' else. Alright, just try to stay alive out there."
"You know it!"
Brad was not sure he believed it, but he had to admit, she was oddly convincing.
"Kaze!" Ryoma's eyes widened, "I had feared the worst. I'm glad to see you well. Please, stand."
"Thank you, your highness," Kaze kept his head lowered, "While my capture may be a disgrace, I don't think it was entirely fruitless."
"What do you mean?"
"I was set free at the behest of one of the Nohrian royals. A princess they called Corrin. Given her appearance…I believe she is Kamui's lost twin."
Ryoma was shocked into silence, the same could not be said of Kamui, "What? Are you certain?"
"She had your distinctive eyes and ears. I'm most confident. The ages line up too."
"How was she? Did she seem well? Are they mistreating her?" Kamui asked in a flurry.
"She seemed fine, but she…seemed very integrated. I think she may have been raised as a Nohrian royal."
"What?" Kamui's curiosity and brotherly concern quickly shifted to anger, "Kidnapping her wasn't enough? They had to take away even her knowledge of her family?"
"Where was she?" Ryoma gave a more measured response. He was angry, yes, but this also meant she was alive and they had some idea as to her status. They could work with that.
"Castle Krakenburg, but it seemed that she was not there often. Fighting us was some sort of trial. She was also quite distressed when ordered to kill us."
"We'll need to think about extracting her. The last thing we want is for them to keep their unsuspecting hostage."
"I would like to sign up for such a team," Kaze bowed.
"Your skills would be appreciated."
"I want to lead it," Kamui practically demanded.
Ryoma thought for a moment before nodding, "Very well. Start building a team. I'll give you discretionary power to find suitable candidates. Bring our sister home."
Kamui bowed, "You have my word."
"There is something else," Kaze spoke up, "About the facility I was there to sabotage, and the monsters they were making there."
"You wanted to see me, Father?" Xander carefully approached the throne. To his displeasure, Iago was already present standing beside the throne.
"Yes, I have just received word that the Hoshidans are mobilizing."
"What? Already? Could it be a preemptive strike?"
"I would say so," Iago answered for his king, "Perhaps their little fort stunt was just part of a larger invasion. I imagine they were forced to move up their plans. It may, at least, mean they are not fully prepared."
"I am sending a force to meet them. Such aggression cannot stand. Xander, I want you to lead these forces."
"Of course, Father. It would be my honor to defend Nohr in your stead."
"Good. I expected no less. Take your strongest legions. If possible, crush Hoshido there and then."
"As you command. If they think they can trod over us, I shall show them they are quite mistaken. With your leave, I will prepare my forces."
"Go," Garon lifted a hand, "Be Nohr's sword."
The prince nodded and hurried about assembling an army. This left Garon with his chief tactician, "Keep an eye on them. It is important we get this war. Have you learned who these mysterious figures are who stopped Hans are?"
"N-no, milord, I'm afraid not. But I will. No one can stay hidden from me for long. Even if they go to Hoshido, it would only buy them time."
"Hmph, I do not need meddlers. They are likely insignificant, but I will not tolerate their interference."
"Understood, milord. I will do all I can to squash them."
"Good. See that you do. Victory is upon us." Sparing a glance at the tactician, the King glared, "Do not fail me now."
"A-as you command, sire." Once Garon got his answer, he looked back up at the sculpture in the ceiling.
"You are dismissed."
Iago did not linger upon dismissal. Even he was not keen to overstay his welcome. Especially as the king creepily stared up at the statue like it was staring back at him. Eccentricities aside though, Iago had plenty to gain, so long as he remained useful. So useful he would stay.
The young people assembled look solemnly at the table before them. No one was much in the mood to speak as the day they had dreaded was here. Even Selena was not in the mood for an "I told you so."
"Should we tell Robin and Lucina?" Odin finally asked.
"We don't even know for sure where they are," Laslow shook his head, "Though I'd love to see Robin think his way out of this."
"We also have no way to contact our allies in a timely manner," Geoffry grumbled, clearly more agitated than usual, "Perhaps we are in over our heads after all."
"But what can we do?" Nicole asked weakly, and no one really had an answer. Then Laslow shrugged.
"We do what we've always done. We survive. Someone has to be responsible for this. We just need proof. Until then, we live to fight another day."
"You'd better be right," Selena gritted her teeth, "I ain't dying in some foreign world. I expect you all to do the same."
"We're not going anywhere," Odin reassured, flustering the redhead.
"You better not. Now, come on, we gotta get ready to go."
"She's right," Geoffery nodded, "We must focus on the task at hand. As difficult as that may be."
Everyone nodded and set out to perform their necessary duties. Everyone except two that was.
"What do you want?" Selena refused to look the blonde in the eyes.
"I just…I know we haven't been on the best of terms, but I just wanted to tell you to be careful out there."
The redhead's expression softened ever so slightly, "Yeah, well, you take care of yourself too. I might be mad at you, but I don't want you dead or anything."
"Well then, I'll consider that progress!"
This earned him a glare and a smack on the shoulder, but it was not malicious. No, it felt almost like old times. Almost like the life Selena wanted.
"Is everyone ready?" Ryoma asked his siblings as he left the palace.
"We've gathered as many troops as we could get on such short notice," Hinoka nodded, "We're ready to ride on your command."
"I would like to make this quick and precise, but we all know this is unlikely. If any of you would prefer to guard the palace, I would understand."
"We're not going anywhere," Takumi swirled Fujin Yumi in his hand.
"I wouldn't miss this for the world," Kamui stood defiantly, "I'll avenge Mother and get our sister back."
"Thank you," Ryoma nodded somberly before facing his troops, "Thank you for coming at such a short notice. As you know, we have been attacked. Our Queen was struck down in cold blood. This is an affront which cannot go unopposed. Nohr has acted with impunity for far too long. That ends now. Not just for Hoshido, but for all our neighbors. We will make them answer for their crimes. Will you help me in this endeavor?"
The crown prince was greeted by thunderous cheers as his people showed their eagerness to avenge themselves. This galvanized the prince as he held his legendary blade high.
"Then follow me, proud soldiers of Hoshido to end Nohr's tyranny once and for all!"
"It seems you have their support," Reflet nodded, "I will do my best to guide the troops."
"I'm counting on you," Ryoma gave a curt nod, "I know we have not always seen eye to eye, but the Queen trusted you. I hope I can as well."
"But of course," The tactician bowed, "I hope to earn your trust just as well. Starting with the upcoming battle."
"Thank you. Now, come my people! Let us settle this debt!"
"Is everyone ready?" Xander asked his siblings sternly, "While I would like for them to back down at our showing of force, it is very likely that we will be engaging the Hoshidan forces."
"We're with you, Xander," Camila offered a smile, "Don't worry about the others. I'll keep them safe. You just focus on what you need to do."
"Thank you, Camilla. And the rest of you. Your support means the world."
"When did you get so sentimental?" Leo scoffed with a smirk.
"Ignore him," Elise puffed out her cheeks, "I think it was sweet."
"Just be sure to come back safely," Corrin looked the most worried of all of them, "I don't want to lose any siblings today."
"You should have more faith in Xander's abilities," Camilla advised.
"Indeed," Leo concurred, "Jabs aside, he is by my estmates the most capable soldier in Nohr, and I'd wager Hoshido too."
"You flatter me, but I've heard impressive things about their crown prince. I won't be dropping my guard. Of that you have my word."
"Then I'll do my best too," Corrin smiled, "Let's all make sure to celebrate once this is over."
"Bit premature for my tastes, but sure." Leo acquiesced.
"Oh, that sounds like fun!"
"Careful not to lose focus, Elise. Even with Camilla's protection, it is still war."
"I know, Leo," Elise stuck her tongue out.
"Now, now, children," Camilla shook her head.
"Indeed," Xander pulled Seigfried from its scabbard and held it high, speaking louder for all to hear, "My brothers and sisters in arms, hear me now! Today we make sure that all the world knows that Nohr cannot be trifled with. If Hoshido believes that we will not respond to their infringement of our borders, then they are sorely mistaken. We will make sure they respect us, and, failing that, they will at least learn to fear us."
His troops gave a shout of agreement before Xander pointed his blade forward, "Forward! For the glory of Nohr!"
"Well, that's not a good sign," Robin deadpanned as he and Lucina watched a Nohrian advance pass by from the treeline, "Looks like things are escalating faster than we thought. This is quite a force too. They mean business."
"What should we do?" Lucina eyed the marching troops with no small amount of concern.
"We follow them," Robin started walking after them while keeping his distance..
"What will you do when they get to their destination?"
"...I don't know. I don't know what we can do right now."
The air was thick as the two armies faced off against one another. The two crown princes stared each other down as they led their respective armies. Despite all the emotions swirling, neither wanted to actually make the first move.
"Prince Ryoma," Xander called out, "I thought you to be a reasonable man. Call off this aggression at once."
"You dare speak to me about aggression?" Ryoma's teeth clenched as his grip on his sword tightened, "After what Nohr has done?"
"We only marched after you infringed upon our borders and acted against us. Stand down, or face our wrath!"
"You would try to justify your vile actions?" Ryoma's anger reached a boiling point, "No more words, Nohrian! I'll put an end to your tyranny, even if I have to cut down every last one of you myself!"
"Hmph," Xander scowled, but he was not terribly surprised, "You can try at your earliest convenience. Troops, advance! For the glory of Nohr!"
"Hoshdians! Cut them down, but leave the prince to me!"
Lucina rushed to intervene, but she was stopped by a hand stretched out before her. Looking over, she saw her husband shake his head.
"Not even Chrom could take on two armies at once. Besides, who do we help? They're being played against each other."
"Then what do we do? We have to do something!"
Robin calmly walked forward to view the carnage and loss of life. As he did so, he clenched his fists with a few purple sparks escaping. Lucina eyed him, remembering who she was talking to.
"We go after the one responsible. Anankos," Robin glared, "One way or another, I'll kill you."

Chapter Text
"I will end your treachery here, Nohrian!" Ryoma shouted as he clashed swords with his fellow crown prince.
Deflecting with his buckler, Xander glared at the samurai, "I do not know what you speak of, and right now I do not care. You are a danger to Nohr, and as such, you must be removed."
"I will not falter, Prince!"
"And neither shall I. Let us fight with honor if you have any. I will endeavor to give you an honorable death."
"Aw, is that the best you can do?" Camilla mocked as Hinoka's naginata clashed with her battle axe, "I've fought recruits with more skill than you."
The redhead clenched her teeth as she pulled her pegasus back, "You Nohrian harpy…"
"Tsk, tsk, temper now," Camilla's smile bore no warmth and her eyes were those of a predator stalking their prey, "Not that it'll matter once I shut you up. Permanently."
"Lady Camilla!" Another wyvern rider knocked an arrow out of the air. The offending arrow came from a Hoshidan archer on the ground who was attempting to back up her liege.
"I got it!" Selena shouted as she jumped into the fray. Cutting through the bow with relative ease, the redhead delivered a swift kick to the other woman's gut to force her down, "Quit while you're ahead. You're no match for me, clearly."
It was about that time that she was warped away by a staff user standing further back forcing the redhead to scowl, but she was not keen on charging that far into enemy lines for one archer.
"Hmph."
"Lord Takumi!" Oboro stood defensively in front of her liege as the blonde prince smirked.
"I see him."
"How cute. Cowering behind your girlfriend?" Leo stretched out a hand and those in Takumi's immediate vicinity suddenly felt their bodies growing heavy under the weight of the gravity magic, "Pathetic. I expected more. Is that all you Hoshidans can do?"
"Not. Even. Close," Takmui grunted as he took a knee and prepared a shot.
"An arrow?"
"That's no ordinary bow," Nicole whispered, "Get down, milord!"
Leo found himself pushed to the ground as Odin tackled him and Nicole let loose a quick arrow that collided with the prince's magic projectile midair. The Hoshidan prince glared at her, but he had to admit she had some skill.
Kamui cut down soldier after soldier before stopping to take measure of the battlefield. Their sides were more evenly matched than he had expected. Perhaps he had underestimated the Nohrians, but no matter, he was determined to break through.
"Stop!" The Hoshidan prince's head snapped to the side as someone approached. His mouth went dry when he saw who it was, "I don't want to fight you, but I will if I must."
"Corrinne…" Kamui reached forward, "It is you…you're here!"
Corrin stepped back, looking at the prince as if he were crazy, "I don't know who you think I am, but you should stop this fighting and go home."
"Right, they've denied you your past," Kamui put a hand to his chest, "I'm Kamui. Your twin brother."
"I…I don't have a twin," Corrin narrowed her eyes as she held her sword out, "What sort of trick is this?"
"This is no trick. You were kidnapped as a child by Garon. I've been desperate to get you back since, but I've been unable to," The prince shook his head and held out his hand, "Nevermind that, we can go home now. You don't have to be their prisoner anymore."
Corrin recoiled, "I'm not their prisoner. I'm a princess of Nohr! I don't know what's wrong with you, but I suggest you get some help."
"Come on, Corrinne, look at me. We have to be related!"
"No, we don't," Corrin braced herself, "And my name is Corrin!"
Kamui gritted his teeth and gripped Yato, "I'll bring you home one way or another. You'll thank me later."
"Don't count on it," Corrin growled, "I'm not going anywhere with you!"
"This battle…" Robin analyzed the conflict, as much as he would rather look away. What he saw disturbed him.
"What is it?" Lucina asked, curious as to what could make him so uncomfortable.
"The Hoshidan forces are feinting. If the Nohrians don't shore up their northern flank, they'll be hit hard. They could lose a lot of people."
"What can we do?" Lucina asked as Robin was already pulling out a fire tome.
"Give a signal and hope one of our friends gets the message."
"A signal? Didn't you write the protocol that requires at least two mages to do that?"
"Yes," Robin took a breath, "But we don't have much of a choice. Cover me."
"Always," Lucina assumed a high alert stance as her husband began to channel energy.
Geoffery pulled back on the reins of Minerva when he saw the flames. Low intensity, but high visibility. The pattern was very intentional too. He recognized it as special signals that Robin had developed for the Shepherds. They had all been forced to memorize them.
Pushing Minerva into a dive, Geoffrey made for his nearest old ally. Someone who might have the pull to change the army's course.
"Ger-Geoffery," Laslow gave a sidelong glare as he fought off a samurai, "What are you doing here?"
"There was a fire signal in the air."
This got Laslow's attention as he disarmed the samurai, "Our tactician friend?"
"I know no one else here that could have sent it."
"What did it say?"
"Our northern flank is in danger. Seems Hoshido is planning something."
"Well, he knows this stuff better than us, I'll see if I can pull Xander away long enough to give an order."
A task easier said than done as it meant getting closer to his duel with the Hoshidan crown prince. While Laslow was confident he could at the very least survive an encounter with either one of them, both at the same time was not a proposition he longed for. He was not Lucina or Chrom after all.
Still, he had to try. Pushing forward, he actually had a fairly easy time getting there as no one really wanted to get close to the battle taking place in the center of the field.
"My liege!" Xander ignored him as he dodged a bolt of lightning before sending his own beam of energy at the prince. Laslow sighed. He did not like doing this. Opening his left hand at his side, a dark energy seeped from it. Faint, but they would be feeling it soon.
"Ugh, what…trickery is this?" Ryoma grimaced as his stomach felt a bit uneasy.
"Cheap tricks?" Xander hid his discomfort behind a slightly paler face, "Is that what the mighty Crown Prince of Hoshido has to resort to?"
"Prince Xander!" Laslow cried louder, "I have an Urgent report!"
"What is it?" Xander never took his eyes off of Ryoma, but to the latter's credit, he did nothing to stop Laslow.
"Milord," Laslow whispered, "Our northern flank is in danger. I believe they mean to out maneuver us."
"Are you certain?" Xander finally took his eyes off the prince, "Your sources again?"
"Yes," His retainer nodded, "You'll want to trust him, milord. He knows his stuff better than anyone I know."
"Very well. Nohrians! Reinforce the northern flank!"
Ryoma narrowed his eyes, but he did not comment further. He did not have to.
"So, he was right," Xander scoffed, "Turn tail and run while you can. You cannot win this engagement."
Ryoma knew he was right. They had seen through the plan. To stay would be pointless. All it would do would shed more blood.
"All forces! Fall back for now." As the Hoshidans began their retreat, Ryoma looked back to Xander, "This is not over, Crown Prince. We will face off in battle again."
"We'll be ready for you."
Having said his piece, Ryoma left with his troops. As he did, Camilla landed next to Xander.
"We're not pursuing?"
"No, they retreated because no reasonable victory was possible. The same is true of us."
"He's right," Leo rode up, "But Father won't be happy regardless."
"I'll deal with him. For now, let's fall back and determine our strategy."
"Hey, Corrin," Elise ran up to her sister, staff in hand, as she slowly rejoined the others, "Are you okay?"
"I'm…fine. There was just some weirdo in the Hoshidan army. He insisted he was my twin brother. That's absurd though. Right?"
"Of course it is!" Elise beamed, however, the older siblings shared a concerned look. They let Elise handle this for now. The others would have a long talk later. For now, they would relish in the fact they survived.
Reflet stared curiously at the battlefield as her troops retreated. That was…unexpected. She thought she had hidden the advance expertly. No amateur would have seen through that. Not even Iago who was not even supposed to be amongst them.
Something was not right.
As Ryoma trudged into view, she opted for some damage control, "MIlord, I must apologize. I do not know how they saw through our gambit."
"It was worth a try," Ryoma sighed, "We were too evenly matched without it I'm afraid. Continuing the battle would have been futile. We must find another way to defeat them."
"Of course," The tactician bowed, "It will not be easy though. They will be on high alert."
"I know, but I trust your abilities. We will convene a war council back at the castle."
Ryoma walked forward, leaving it at that, but Reflet was not so ready to let it slide. Looking back at the plain one last time, the snow-haired tactician glared before falling back in with the Hoshidans.
"They're both retreating," Lucina commented aloud, "Your plan worked."
"I merely stalled matters," Robin was far less pleased with himself than she was of him, "They'll be back at each other's throats before long."
"Then as you say, we must stop the mastermind and show them they are not enemies."
"That might not be so easy. They seem like a stubborn lot."
"Then we'll just have to convince them."
"Heh," Robin smirked and held her close, "When did you get so optimistic?"
"I suppose I've had some good influences."
Heh," Robin let out a smile before growing serious, "First things first, we'll need to have a talk with our allies. Perhaps it is time we made ourselves known. To a degree. I'd rather not reveal our origins if at all possible. Or blow their cover while they're embedded."
"A prudent course. So we're going back to the Nohrian capital then?"
"Yes, the trip to Hoshido will have to wait. They will no doubt make it harder to get in after this. We'll have to make due with what we have access to."
"How are you holding up?" Lucina slipped one hand in his. The reason did not have to be stated. They both knew what she was talking about.
"I'll feel a lot better when we bring those responsible low. Don't worry though. I'll be fine. I'm in a much better head space now."
"That is good to hear, but remember, you can tell me anything."
He kissed her on the forehead, "I know, dear. I know."
Chapter 9: Chapter 8
Chapter Text
The Nohrian siblings met in the great hall of Nohr, King Garon looking at each of them with piercing cold eyes. Not that any dared look up at him until he gave permission. Even Corrin had picked up on that rather quickly.
"So, the Hoshidans are not crushed," Garon finally spoke. His words were not full of anger, but that did not put them at ease.
"No, my king," Xander spoke for them all, "They came prepared for war."
"And had you not changed tactics, you would have been nearly wiped out."
"I apologize. I did not see their strategy."
"I will expect all of you to make up for this failure. Right now I need you to reinforce our positions across the country. Xander, you will lead our army as a whole. I want you to make sure we are prepared for another such force. Get our forces ready in every corner of our kingdom."
"Yes, my king!" Xander finally stood and saluted.
"Camilla, make sure our wyverns are ready to blot out the sun at a moment's notice. I want you ready to smother our foes in talons and teeth."
"As you say."
"Leo, you are to shore up our more delicate operations. You seem to have a talent for it. Put it to use."
"I will not disappoint."
"Elise, you are not fit for battle. You will stay here under protection."
The blonde swallowed, but managed a, "Yes, Father."
"Corrin."
"Father," Corrin snapped out of her doldrum.
"Some of our 'allies' may see this as an opportunity to betray us. You are to ride north and ensure that the Ice Tribe remains loyal. I do not care how you do it, but weed out any treachery."
"I understand, Father."
"Good. Do not disappoint me. All of Nohr is counting on you."
"Yes, my Lord!" The siblings responded in unison.
"How could we let them push us back?" Takumi fumed, "We were supposed to crush their army then and there!"
"I must apologize," Reflet apologized again, "I was not anticipating they would have such a…capable tactician in their ranks. I will try to account for that moving forward."
"We will support your intelligence gathering where we can," Ryoma reassured the strategist, "But we cannot start turning on each other. This was a setback, but I take the fact they were already amassed at our borders as a confession of guilt. We must be sure to defend our people first and foremost. Only then can we seek our vengeance.
"Hinoka, I want you to work with Reflet to deploy our troops to defend our borders and strategic locations."
"I'll do what I can."
"Leave it to me," Reflet nodded.
"Takumi, we won't be on the defensive forever. I want you to work on assembling strike forces."
"Now you're talking. I'll make sure we're ready to move at a moment's notice."
"See that you do. Sakura, I want you to monitor civilian morale and help our people through these hard times."
"I-I can fight too," Sakura blurted out while squeezing her eyes shut.
"I know you can, but this is an important task. One you're better suited to than any of us."
"O-oh," Sakura bowed stiffly with a blush, "Then I'll give it everything I have!"
"I know you will," Ryoma then eyed his other brother stewing in the corner, "Kamui. Your mission remains the same."
"That…" The draconic prince eyed the assembled royals, "Might be harder than I thought."
"Why's that?" Hinoka raised a brow.
"I…saw her during the battle."
Kamui paused to let the surprised royals voice said surprise, "She was fighting as a princess of Nohr." Clutching his fist, Kamui continued, "She did not even recognize me. Nor did she believe that we were siblings."
They were all silent for a few minutes before Sakura finally asked, "What are you going to do?"
"I'm bringing her to her senses, one way or another," Kamui spoke without doubt or hesitation, "It's for her own good. Whether she knows it or not. Don't worry, I'll get her back, and I'll make them pay for what they did to her." He clenched his fist, "That much I promise."
"Well, this is a fine mess," Laslow tossed his sword carelessly on the table making a loud thud.
"Matters escalated faster than we had anticipated, but we managed to prevent greater losses this day," Geoffery muttered, "I am at a loss for how much good we can do moving forward though."
"Should we…should we go home?" Nicole asked, and for the first time, Selena was not the only one considering it. That was until the door opened to reveal a rain drenched duo.
"Report," Robin demanded, his tone not giving room to question him as he did not even take the time to take his wet coat off.
"War," Selena barked, "We're stuck in another war, in another world, that we have no stake in!"
"Sev…" Odin trailed off under her sharp gaze. He knew she was right. He also knew the only reason she had come.
"If you want to leave, leave," Robin spoke sternly, "You're right. You have no stake here. So, if that's how you feel, you're free to go. I can tell you how to go back the way we came."
"I…" She was at a loss for words. A rarity, which only served to show how unsure she was after being put on the spot. When she looked at her friends, she found she was not looking at them. Just him. She swallowed, "No, I'll stay."
Robin analyzed her for a bit without saying anything while Lucina wore a small but proud smile, "Very well."
Moving to address everyone, Robin was grim, "Now, what do we know about their movements?"
"Leo has ordered Nicole and I to trail Corrin to the Ice Tribe," Odin informed, "Seems that he expects things will get bloody. Considering the less than consensual relationship the tribe has with Nohr, can't say I blame him."
"Good, that will give you some time with our special little princess. If she is key to stopping this, then you need to focus on keeping her alive and open to the idea of a third party manipulating things behind the scenes.
"To that end, we need to stop this war as soon as possible, and to do that, we need to convince both sides that there is a silent enemy that needs dealing with. That should be our top priority as well as finding a way to find this...Anankos."
"Our informant didn't exactly get that far," Laslow mused, "We haven't had much luck finding it on our own either."
"Hmm," Robin paced, "We know he has agents of his own that he sent after your informant. If we could follow them back, we could find where he's based. However, to do that, we'll have to either find them acting or give them a reason to intervene."
Addressing the gathered troops directly, "If you think you've found an agent of Anankos, do not act immediately. Observe. Thwart them if needed, but see if you can find something out from them instead.
"That said, our first priority is to de-escalate this conflict." Robin eyed the others, "I want to meet with these royals."
This made the retainers a bit uneasy. It was Laslow that spoke up first, "Xander might go for it, but if it goes south, it might not go well for us."
"That's true. How much do you have to do with their paperwork though?"
The retainers shared a concerned look.
"Laslow!" The retainer stood stock still as the crown prince caught up to him.
"Milord?" Laslow humbly bowed, hoping he was keeping his cool, "How may I serve?"
"I received a strange letter here," Xander held up a quite familiar piece of paper, but Laslow played it off as if he had never seen it, "It purports to be from someone with inner knowledge of this conflict. It included details that a layman should not be knowledgeable of."
"I see. A potential spy, perhaps?"
"Possibly, but it isn't something I can just ignore. The writer would like a royal audience."
"Will King Garon agree to something like that?"
"He already has," Xander produced another letter and handed both to Laslow, "Here. This is the reply. The letter included very specific instructions. Follow them to the letter."
"Will do, sire, but…are you sure? Doesn't it include sensitive material?"
"It's nothing you don't already know. Besides, you have a talent for knowing things you shouldn't. Might as well make use of that ability."
Laslow swallowed, "Yes, sire. Though, if I may, what if this is a trap?"
"Then we'll be short an enemy spy, won't we?"
The mood in Hoshido was understandably tense. Not only were they at war, but their supposed quick push to victory had been rebutted. Now, they were preparing for a long and bloody war. Something the man sipping tea was all too familiar with - if that fight for survival could even be considered a war.
If only his compatriot shared his outer calm.
"The more you act like someone has a knife to your throat, the more attention you bring to yourself."
"Can you blame me?" The sheepish voice called out from underneath the robe, "After everything that happened lately, they'll probably want my head on a platter."
"You could simply remove the hood."
"That might be even worse!"
"Eh," Kent shrugged, "From what I understand, they may try to worship you as some sort of…what was it…ah, yes, kitsune."
"Do not lump me in with those foxes. I've had a hard enough time avoiding those things while 'Nagi' frolics across the countryside."
"Ah, so they do exist."
"Yes, and they're very territorial. I also don't imagine they'd take too kindly to a rabbit."
"I trust your ability to stay out of danger," Kent put down his cup calmly, "Now, on to more important matters, has Nagi had any success in her search?"
The taguel sighed, "None yet. She might have a lead on potential dragon activity, but she still seems pretty convinced these Dawn and Dusk dragons are long dead but probably did exist."
"A double edged sword for certain," The scholar put a hand to his mouth in thought, "That means we can't ask them for help, but we don't have to worry about them opposing our efforts."
"Not that it'd matter now that Lucina and Robin are here. They could handle it."
"The situation with Grima was a special circumstance. I would not expect them to be able to pull out a similar feat. Especially with Lucina's Falchion in the state it is in. From my studies, dragons can be especially hardy. Particularly those of legend. I wonder if any regular human could hope to best them. It may truly take the might of a dragon to slay a dragon. Though, I'd like to think it possible. One day at least."
"Thanks for raining on that parade."
"Do not misinterpret my words. I am greatly relieved that they have joined our efforts. Perhaps now we might make some headway. Especially with the greatest tactician alive on our side. Though, this mystery tactician has me intrigued."
"She that good?"
"I…don't think so, but from the reports I've gathered, she is exceptionally skilled in her craft yet we know little of her past. Our allies are working on it, but we still know little. I doubt she will be a tactical match for Robin though. Few have his level of strategic acumen. I can only think of one that is close."
The taguel shivered while reflexively protecting his ears, "Don't remind me."
"Tiki! Tiki!" Morgan puffed out her cheeks as the manakete kept sleeping on the couch, "Waaaaaake up!"
"Huh?" The dragon wiped her eyes, "Morgan? What's wrong?"
"I'm booooooooored!" Morgain made an exaggerated show of fainting which at best got a bemused smile from the manakete.
"You woke me up for that?"
"Yeah," Morgan tilted her head, "Why not?"
"Nothing. I'm just used to people only waking me in dire circumstances."
"But this is dire! Boredom is no joke! Surely you did stuff as a little…hatchling to stave off the menace."
"I'm afraid most of my childhood was spent sleeping. Not much playing."
Morgan let out an exasperated gasp of horror, "That's horrible! Well, lucky for you, I'm an expert at all such things. I'll teach you all about playing!"
"Er, that's nice, but I think I'm a few thousand years too old for that. You're a bit old for such games too."
"Nonsense!" Morgan declared confidently, hands on her hips, "You're never too old to have fun! Oh, this is gonna be great! I need to make some plans!"
Tiki watched her leave to draw up some rough drafts with a mix of horror and amusement. She was not sure which one was stronger.
Robin and Lucina were greeted at the gates of Castle Krakenburg by Laslow and Selena. Odin and Nicole had already left on babysitting duty. The two did a good job of pretending they did not know them as they guided the husband and wife through the castle.
It was clear they were not trusted though. Everything not on their path was locked up tight and there was no shortage of guards on duty. Fortunately, he had people on the inside who had already provided him with the layout of the castle.
Lucina remained on guard the whole time as well. While she trusted Robin and her old comrades, she did not trust these Nohrians. Robin tried to remain diplomatic for his part, remaining polite and cordial.
They were led into the throne room where Xander, Camilla, and Leo eyed them suspiciously. Lucina returned their gazes just as hard, however, Robin was more concerned with the…thing on the throne. His posture immediately grew defensive. He was not sure why, but something about that man seemed positively foul. Not in the same way as someone like Gangrel. No, it was more like Validar, but far worse if that were possible.
"So, you are the informants I have heard about," Garon's eyes did not leave Robin. If he noticed Lucina's presence, he made no indication, "I would speak with the man. Alone."
The crown prince looked like he really wanted to object, but in the end, he knew better than to argue. As the siblings walked by them, Garon spoke again.
"Alone includes you," He finally gave Lucina some acknowledgement. Lucina was absolutely not a fan, but Robin nodded his approval. Relenting, she joined the siblings outside. The awkward silence outside the doors was only matched by the one inside just before the doors shut.
"Hoshido is not the enemy" Robin finally spoke when the door was shut. Robin did not trust this…person, but he hoped he might learn something at least, "Someone is manipulating everything from behind the scenes."
The king laughed. A deep, booming, humorless laugh, "So, you do know. Yes," Robin felt a bit uncomfortable under his harsh gaze, "You could be a threat."
"Are you Anankos?" Robin demanded.
"Hah! I am not worthy of the name. Regardless, you know too much. What I want to know is how you know it."
"And I want to know why you'd condemn two nations to war. What does Anankos want?"
"What does he want?" Garon repeated incredulously, "It is not my place to question his motives. Only to be his blade. I can tell that you are not the type to break. I wonder though, is the woman made of such sturdy material?"
"She's just as capable of cutting you down as I am," Robin's posture tensed along with his hardened stare, "But I won't give you that opportunity."
"Hmph, somehow I doubt that. Seems you can only barely grasp at my true nature as well. Very well. I will get my answers from the woman. You can burn!"
Having acted fast, Garon succeeded in hitting him directly with his Ragnarok spell. It likely would have incinerated a normal human. As it stood, he was merely blown back by the monster king's surprise attack. The king did not seem amused that it had failed, grabbed the massive great ax at the side of the throne and slowly walking down to meet the tactician.
Robin had to admit, it had been a long time before he had so much as felt a spell. This…thing was strong physically and magically. That magic though, it was backed up by something more than typical spellcraft. Something familiar and foreign all at once.
"Father!" Xander rushed in with the siblings and Lucina. The bluenette was instantly at her husband's side, ready to back him up through thick and thin.
"This man tried to assassinate me," Garon lied as he slowly descended the stairs. Whether the lumbering pace was for gravitas or to make himself look weaker in front of the royals, Robin was not sure.
Xander, however, needed to hear nothing else. All Robin heard was the sound of Falchion being pulled from its scabbard before steel met with steel. Both fighters were surprised by the strength behind the other's blow, but Lucina recovered quicker as she and Robin settled in back to back.
"Now what?"
"We're not here to fight them," Robin eyed Garon as he continued descending the stairs. For a split second, he could have sworn the king's eyes glowed. "Like we planned. Make it quick!"
Robin reached out past his wife's shoulder and let loose a powerful wind spell. Powerful enough to send the royals reeling back into the wall behind them without doing any lasting damage.
With that in mind, the couple ran back the way they came upon the agreed upon escape route. Meanwhile, the royals gave chase. This left Garon alone in the throne room. He looked up and stared blankly at the statue in the ceiling.
"Yes…he must be eliminated with the rest of them. I understand…for the silent dragon. Ha…ha…hahahahahahaha!"
"This way!" Robin blew open one of the locked doors despite the guards standing in their way. The soldiers on the other side were easy enough to knock aside. There was a turn coming up ahead. The logical route would be to go left. They went right instead. They had to make it a little less obvious they had people on the inside. Or at least how much access they had.
"Just a little further," Robin mentally tracked their escape. Fortunately, the two were faster than most and were easily able to outrun the armored guards. That was until they both suddenly felt significantly heavier in the courtyard.
"What manner of sorcery is this?" Lucina winced as she forced herself to stay upright.
"That would be gravity magic," The younger prince smirked as he walked into view, his outstretched hand aglow with the special purple magic, "Rare I'll admit. I wouldn't shame you for being unfamiliar."
"You don't know what you're doing," Robin made a labored step towards the prince, "That thing on the throne isn't human."
"Hah, Hoshidan rhetoric? Please. His methods may be harsh, but-"
"No!" Robin shouted with another step causing Leo to back up with surprise and caution, but he quickly hid those emotions, "I'm not being colorful or hyperbolic! He literally isn't human!"
"Enough!" Leo shouted back, "Your mad ravings won't save you now. All that remains is to see how deep your spy ring goes and to root it out."
Robin gritted his teeth, "You'll doom both nations if you stay this course!"
"Well then, at least we took them with us."
Robin growled before unleashing a burst of wind magic behind him with enough force that it propelled him forward. He was able to shoulder tackle Leo hard enough to knock the tome out of his hand and end the spell.
Leo did not give up quite yet though, drawing a blade. However, so did Robin. The prince was not expecting much from what he assumed was a mage. His preconception was quickly disproven though as Robin had years more experience and proved more than a match for him when it came to swordplay.
"Think about it," Robin held the prince to the ground after disarming him with ease, "Is he really acting with Nohr's best interests at heart? Have you verified what he's told you?"
He would not get a replay as Leo's diversion had given the older siblings time to catch up.
Lucina clashed with both of them at once. She was able to hold them off, especially since they were without their mounts, but this was more than they had intended to fight to say the least.
"Think about it," Robin told Leo as he stood up and cast a fire spell between his wife and the royals. Just strong enough to form a dividing line.
"Let's get out here."
Lucina did not have to be told twice. She only spoke up once they were clear of the castle, but she had been curious the whole escape, "What happened in there?"
"It's worse than I thought," Robin shook his head, "Nohr is compromised at the very top. Whatever is sitting on that throne…isn't human. I can't explain it, but my body was screaming at me as soon as we were in the same room."
Chapter 10: Chapter 9
Chapter Text
"Kanpaku," Kamui bowed, "I mean, Reflet, you wanted to see me?"
The tactician gave a slight smile, "Yes, seeing as you are determined to rescue your sister, I thought you'd like to hear my latest intel."
The prince immediately perked up, "You heard something?"
"From what I can tell, it seems she is heading north to the Ice Tribe. Likely to make sure they don't get any ideas about joining us."
"I'll head out right away," Kamui immediately made to leave.
"Hold it!"
Kamui froze in his tracks and looked back, allowing Reflet to continue, "Now, this is a great opportunity both to get your sister back and gain an ally."
"What do you mean?" Kamui blinked in confusion.
"I mean, if Nohr is concerned about the Ice Tribe rebelling, there may be merit to offering them a deal. Back us, and we secure their independence."
"Hmm, good idea, but would they be able to fight back with Nohr right on their border?"
"I'm sure they have their ways. But we'll never know if we don't try. It would be a useful advantage in defeating Nohr's tyranny once and for all."
"I understand. I'll try to have a word with the chief."
"Good. They have a head start, but I'll make sure you have some mounts to speed things along."
"Thank you, Reflet. I won't forget this."
The tactician smiled, "Don't mention it. Anything for family, after all."
"So what now?" Lucina asked once they had safely escaped the outer perimeter of Windmire. Robin had hardly said a word while they fled, and Lucina honored that sentiment until they came to an impasse on where to go next. That said, she still wanted to know what he meant by King Garon not being human.
"We head north," Robin answered, not looking away from his new goal.
"Going to meet up with Owain's group?"
"Yes. If Corrin is at the center of this, I want to see why. I'll work on something more long term on the way."
"Just remember, you need not shoulder this whole conflict on your own."
Robin offered a tired smile, "Yes, I know. Thank you."
"But…what do you mean that Garon isn't human?"
"I don't know," Robin shook his head, "But he…he didn't feel right. I can't really explain it, but…it just…he was not normal. The closest thing I ever felt were those Deadlords Grima had made, but even then it's not a perfect match."
"A puppet of Anankos?"
"Most likely. Tugging the strings from the very top."
"Do you think the royal siblings are also corrupted?"
"I'm sure Garon has been poisoning them with lies and half-truths, but I didn't feel anything like that with them. With enough evidence, we might be able to convince them. Though that might be a lot harder now."
"Do you think they've also captured Hoshido too?"
"I don't know. I can't rule it out though. We need more info."
"Perhaps a trip to Hoshido is in order."
"Agreed," Robin nodded, "We'll let Odin and Nicole know where we're headed after we observe Corrin a bit if we can."
"Sounds like a plan," Lucina nodded, but she could see he was already in his own head. He got like this when planning. The bluenette was concerned though. They were missing a lot of information and even her husband, as brilliant as he was, could only wing it so far.
And he did not take failure well.
"He got away." It was not a question. Garon could tell by their demeanor that they had failed in their mission. Pathetic puppets they were.
"I'm sorry, my lord. They proved more capable than I had thought. It will not happen again."
"It had better not," The king scowled, "Continue your war preparations. I'll have Iago handle this."
"Yes, Father," Xander stood and prepared to leave with Camilla and Leo, but Garon called for Leo to stay.
"I have reason to believe that some of the border towns might take this as an opportunity to get unruly. I want you to prepare counter measures."
"Certainly. Any militia will…"
"Not just militia. Any and all rebels should be stamped out."
"I…of course. I'll begin planning immediately."
"I expect frequent updates. Do not fail me again."
"You can count on me," Leo bowed before making a quick exit.
"Do you think there is merit to these reports?" Ryoma asked his retainers as he looked out the window.
"We do, milord," Kagero answered, "There are many rumblings. Several border towns may join us with the proper support. We could send an envoy to work with them."
"It should be noted," Saizo butted in, "That in the current climate, some may not take kindly to accepting Nohrians into our ranks."
"Perhaps, but we cannot blame their citizenry for their ruler's actions. If some of them wish to be free of tyranny, we should help them. If they can help us, all the better."
"As you say. We can escort your ambassador personally."
"As you should," Ryoma turned around with a smile, "I will go myself."
"Yourself, milord?" Kagero could not even hide her surprise, "But, your highness, you're now the ruler of Hoshido."
"Yes, so it should show quite a bit of good faith if I arrive in person. When do we leave?"
Saizo was the first to respond, "We can be ready to move within the day. I would suggest keeping your entourage small though to avoid suspicion."
"I had the same idea. Saizo, Kagero, I would ask you to remain as my guards. I can think of no one more qualified."
"It would be our honor," Kagero and Saizo bowed, though neither of them were too fond of this idea. Nevertheless, he was their ruler.
"Okay," Corrin shivered as she wrapped herself in her cape, "Now I see why it's called the Ice Tribe."
"I tried to warn you to pack something warmer, milady," Gunter looked back from atop his horse, "But it should not be much further."
"Might I suggest wearing pants next time you head to an arctic climate," Jakob spoke dryly as he handed her some tea that was somehow still warm.
"I-it was n-neber a p-problem in the f-f-fortress," Corrin gratefully slurped down the warm beverage.
"Yes, well, perhaps you will heed our wardrobe advice in the future."
"If I s-s-surbibe."
"Let's not be dramatic," Jakob replied, "Should you be in actual peril, I would rather skin myself alive and have you wear the remains for warmth."
Corrin blinked, "Ew. Let's…not do that."
"Enough," Gunter held out a gauntleted hand, "We're here."
Corrin did her best to get her sentences out without shivering as she walked into the town, "Huh, it's quaint. Flora and Felicia come from here, right?"
"Yes, I believe they-"
"Corrin?" The entourage stopped in their snowy tracks as a familiar voice called out to them, "Lady Corrin! Fancy seeing you here!"
"Felicia?" Corrin winced as the maid slipped and fell, but she did not lose a beat as she recovered and dusted herself off, "Felicia, what are you doing here? I thought you and Flora were staying at the fortress."
"Oh, shortly after you left, we got word that something had come up. Flora asked for time off and Lilith agreed to cover for us. We've been helping out here ever since."
"Well, I'm happy to see you!" Corrin beamed, "I have so much to tell you about what I've been up to. I must sit down with you and Flora to-" The princess stopped as her butler cleared his throat. "Oh, right. At the moment I'm here on official business from King Garon. I am seeking an audience with the Chief."
"You mean Grandfather? I can take you!"
"That may help smooth things along, thank you." Corrin nodded, but Gunter looked less pleased.
"Perhaps." Pulling Jakob aside he whispered, "Stay on guard. Something doesn't smell right."
"I am always on guard when Lady Corrin is involved," He looked back at the maid and princess. "Still, while it is serendipitous, I don't think Felicia is even capable of deceit. At least not successfully."
"She is not the one I'm concerned about." The great knight said cryptically before walking after Corrin. Jakob was left to follow with narrowed eyes thinking about what he said. Could Flora really…
"Miss Corrin," The older man looked pale, almost sickly. He radiated a certain cold though which was definitely not natural. Corrin bowed respectfully regardless. "My granddaughters have talked quite a bit about you. They tell me that you are kind and reasonable."
"They flatter me, but I'd like to think I am."
"Perhaps it is a good thing that you were sent. I hope you can be reasoned with."
"That depends, what were you wanting to discuss?" Corrin sat across from the chief.
"I am sure that you are aware that Nohr is now at war."
"I am," Corrin nodded, thinking back to her first real battle.
"However, do you know how we came to be subservient to Nohr?" His eyes grew harder.
"I…I'm sorry, I don't."
"Then allow me to educate you." He stood and walked to the back of the room, looking over various relics of his tribe, "We were a proud people once. Much like those of the Wind and Fire Tribes. I still remember those days. Then King Garon came.
"We used to have a pleasant working relationship with King Garon and Nohr as a whole. We had been partners for decades. Then, Garon changed. I don't know why. Some say the Concubine Wars drove him mad. I don't know. I don't particularly care. All I know is that our relationship changed after that."
The elder looked back, "Eventually, his demands became too harsh to bear. When I tried to resist, we were conquered. Quickly, and without mercy. I had no choice but to acquiesce. I lost my son in the occupation. My granddaughters were forced to serve in Nohr as servants. Hostages is what they were."
"I…never knew…" Corrin felt a bit weak at everything she had been told.
"No, they said as much. I do not blame you, lass. They speak highly of you, and it was only by the kindness of those at the fortress that they were able to return to me. For that, you have my gratitude."
"I didn't really do much," Corrin admitted, "I just tried to be kind to them."
The elder smiled, "I don't think you realize what a rarity that is," The smile faded though, "Unfortunately, kindness alone will not free my people. I know why you are here Princess of Nohr. I am afraid I cannot allow you to intervene."
Corrin stood quickly when she heard the sounds of combat, "What are you doing?"
"What I must for my people," He spoke gravely and with no hint of malice, "Please, do not resist and you will be kept comfortably as you did for my granddaughters."
"Please, don't do this!" Corrin pleaded knowing what she would have to do if he did. She could only imagine what Garon would do to them if she did not stop them.
"I am sorry. I really am. Much as it leaves a sour taste in my mouth, the Hoshidans seem to be our only chance at independence."
"Please, listen to him," Corrin froze hearing that voice.
"Flora…you knew?" The princess watched what she thought to be her friend standing in the doorway.
"Yes," The maid looked away, knife pointed at her master, "I'm sorry. You were really kind to us, but…I have to look out for my people."
"We can find another way!" Corrin insisted, "King Garon will burn this place to the ground if you do this!"
Flora hesitated at that. To some degree, she knew the princess' words were true. Still, her grandfather…
"I'm sorry, Miss. This is how it must be."
Corrin sighed, "I'm sorry too." Within the blink of an eye, Corrin swung her blade and knocked Flora's knife out of her hand. Without looking back, she charged into the main square to see Jakob and Gunter fighting off an assault, but they had been joined by two strangers.
"Radiant strike!" The blonde mage sent a crackling bolt into the enemy ranks while the archer beside him kept firing precision shots, cackling madly the whole time.
As Corrin stood there stupified by these very…colorful individuals who were more than holding their own compared to Gunter and Jakob, a maid ran, tripped, picked herself up, and ran again over to her.
"Lady Corrin! What's going on?" Felicia panted, "Why are Jakob and Gunter fighting the town guard? And who are those weirdos?"
"You don't know?" Corrin asked, hopeful that at least one of her maids would not stab her in the back today.
"No, I was just getting evening tea ready, and then I heard all this. Where's Flora?"
"She's…"
"Felicia!" Flora stopped at the entrance to the Chief's house seeing the last thing she wanted to, "Step away. I can explain."
Felicia trudged through the snow up to her sister, "What are you doing? We finally get a vacation and you…you attack Corrin?" The younger of the two huffed, "I thought you had let go of all this."
"I-I can't just…abandon our people, Felicia. You know what they did to our parents."
"Yeah, I do," Felicia stomped in the snow, "But you know that Corrin, Gunter, and Jakob had nothing to do with that. Neither did those two weirdos. Probably."
"Jakob," Flora looked past her sister to see his deathly scowl. If looks could kill… "I don't…want to hurt them, but we can't survive under Nohr much longer."
"I promise," Corrin walked up to the twin maids, "I'll do everything I can to help your people."
"King Garon would never agree to it."
"Well, we don't…have to tell him." Corrin suggested, "A trick I picked up from Leo. So, come on, why don't we talk this out?"
Flora closed her eyes. She really did not want anyone's blood on her hands today, "Everyone, stand down!"
"Flora?" The elder asked from the ice hut.
"I'm sorry, Grandfather," Flora bowed, "But…I trust Lady Corrin. She's my friend. If anyone can help, it would be her. Besides, she's right. We're no match for Nohr, and I'm afraid Hoshido would just use us as a distraction despite their alluding to supporting us."
"Hmm, if you think it best then."
"Ah, the power of bonds prevails again!" The blonde mage cried triumphantly as he stood one leg on a conveniently placed rock, "Truly my greatest of uncles was-"
"Get down!"
The blonde could barely react before being pushed aside and hearing the sound of steel hitting steel as his cousin knocked a shuriken out of the air.
"Er, thanks," Odin rubbed his neck bashfully.
"Stay alert!" Robin yelled as he joined them from the treeline, "You have company!"
"Hoshidans!" Gunter called and they all assumed ready stances with Hoshidan forces crawling out of the eastern woods.
"Did you call them here?" Corrin looked to Flora frantically.
"I didn't," Flora eyed the soldiers in concern before looking back, "Grandfather?"
"No…they said reinforcements could not reach us yet…"
"These are special forces," The tactician spoke calmly, but with authority, "Small, easy to sneak around patrols."
"Hello, sister," They witnessed a man with hair matching Corrin's in shade as well as the same blood red eyes. Robin, Lucina, Odin and Nicole all noticed the tell tale ears of a manakete as well. "I'm here to bring you home. One way or another."
A/N: I forgot to post this for like two days. Though, doesn't seem too many are that excited for this one.
Chapter 11: Chapter 10
Chapter Text
"You again?" Corrin walked up past the newcomers to meet her attacker, "What kind of stalker are you?"
"I told you, I'm your brother. I don't know what brainwashing the Nohrians may have done to you, but we can sort that out back in Hoshido."
"I'm not going anywhere with you!" Corrin brandished her own blade, "Now leave before someone gets hurt."
"I've no intentions of leaving without you," Kamui declared confidently, "You'll thank me later, I'm sure."
"The lady said she does not want to go," Gunter walked up, face stoney as usual, "I kindly ask you to respect her decision."
Kamui narrowed his eyes and readied himself for battle, "Kaze!"
A flurry of metal blades flew from the treeline with pinpoint accuracy, however, they never reached their target. Blown out of the air by powerful wind magic, all eyes shifted to Robin, magic wind still swirling around his hand.
"Now, now, let's all be civil here."
Ryoma marched onward with his eyes firmly set towards his destination. Kagero and Saizo were nearby even if he could not see them. While he did not have the mentality to be a ninja, nor the bloodline, he was still grateful to have received at least some training in their ways. It made him nigh impossible to sneak up on with even his masterful retainers only having about a 50/50 chance of succeeding.
Right now though, it was his samurai training that he was falling back on. While he marched, he reached into his repertoire of focus techniques to keep his mind from racing. Everything had come at him so fast, and if he were being honest, the main reason he decided to take this trip himself was to get away from it all.
Not that he would admit it. A samurai, let alone a king, did not run from their duties. No, this was a diplomatic duty which just so happened to get him out of the castle.
Speaking of which, he did not tell many where he had gone. Just that he had an important operation to take care of that could turn the tides of war. He had been vague even with Hinoka as he was not sure she would agree. He had not told Reflet at all.
He thought he may have been petty, but he did not fully trust her still. Much as he was trying to integrate her into the war effort, his pride demanded he make this decision on his own. If it failed, he would accept the price, but he would not be dissuaded from trying.
"My liege," Saizo appeared beside him and Ryoma forced back a flinch. He had been too wrapped up in his own thoughts.
"No need to be so formal when it's just us three. What is it?"
"We should arrive at our destination within the week. I would expect to start seeing patrols before too long. We'll need to begin our proper approach. It…is not too late to turn back."
"I've come this far," Ryoma smiled, putting a hand on his retainer's shoulder, "Beside, you know I'm far too stubborn to back down now."
"Agreed," Kagero emerged from behind him, "Do not worry. We will ensure your safety."
"I wouldn't have brought you if I didn't think you were up to the task. Now, come. We have allies to make."
Leo looked out over the darkened corners of Cheve. Things had been quiet since his arrival. He expected that to be honest. It would not exactly be wise to make a ruckus with a prince of Nohr present.
He had his work cut out for him. Especially since he had sent his retainers after Corrin. Though, that may have been for the best. Subtlety was neither of their strong suits. Besides, it might get…messy.
Adjusting the straps on his right gauntlet, Leo thought about how to best proceed with minimal casualties. He knew his father could be harsh, but…well, he had his own way of doing things. So long as he made it convincing, it should work.
"He's not human!"
The prince shook his head. He was harsh. Cruel at times, but he did what he did for Nohr. It was what Xander believed, and Leo had to as well. Looking down from the balcony of the governor's mansion, Leo reaffirmed his resolve. He would begin his work in the morning.
"What do you think you're doing?"
Azura spun, gracefully but surprised to see the elder princess with her arms crossed awaiting an explanation. The songstress swallowed and stood her ground.
"I'm going to back up Kamui."
"That explains the naginata," Hinoka walked past her to inspect the weapon on her pegasus' side. "Though last I heard, you weren't cleared for missions."
The bluenette sighed, "You know the nobles don't trust me. If I can't do anything official to help, then I can at least do this."
"Did Ryoma sign off on this?" Hinoka side eyed her from checking on the mount.
"He…is not present to do so."
"That's right," Hinoka faced her fully with hands on her hips, "So I'm well within my rights and even duty to stop you."
"Are you going to?" Azura asked defensively.
"Hmm, you're right that they don't trust you, so you know I can't officially approve this or it could come back on Ryoma."
"I understand that."
"Good. Now go on, get going."
Azura's eyes lit up ever so slightly, "You're letting me go?"
"Just don't make me regret it."
"You have my word."
Hinoka let herself smile, "I know. Bring our sister home."
The songstress nodded and mounted her pegasus before kicking off to rendezvous with Kamui. Hinoka watched her leave with mixed feelings. She understood the desire to do something. She did not like sending a sibling off to war though.
"Who are you?" Kamui demanded of the stranger standing between him and his sister. Kamui's posture was aggressive, keen to strike at a moment's notice. Robin would try not to give him one.
"Someone here to help," Robin kept his voice clear of accusation or tension trying to stay neutral. He surveyed the enemy forces, but he was sure his wife spotted two of them before even he did. Needless to say, they were shocked, but Lucina silently made them stand down.
"Then stand aside and let me save my sister," The prince seethed.
"I don't think she wants to go with you. Perhaps if you stopped to talk things out, then-"
"I'm not going anywhere with that creep!" Corrin shouted, causing Robin to close his eyes and take a deep, frustrated breath.
"See? Her mind is polluted by the Nohrians! I must take her home to Hoshido so that she can see the truth."
"I don't think forcing her is going to win her over."
"I clearly don't have a choice," Kamui snarled as he brandished Yato threateningly. Robin raised a brow at the sword, but focused more on the angry prince, "So stand aside or I'll fight you too!"
Robin's expression hardened with warning, "You don't want to do that."
"I'll do whatever it takes!" Kamui leapt forward only for Robin to effortlessly sidestep the strike. The draconic prince let out a fierce growl as he lunged at the tactician with animalistic frenzy.
After being almost lazily pushed back by a wind spell, Robin noticed the butler preparing a knife, "No!" The tactician blew him back into a snow drift, but now he had officially attacked one of Corrin's entourage.
Gunter and Felicia took defensive stances as Flora went to check on Jakob, though the latter shooed her away. Robin grimaced as Lucina joined him in between the two forces.
"Now what?"
"I suppose tying them to chairs and making them talk is out of the question."
"I don't believe that would help much."
Robin sighed, "Disarm them only if they make a move."
Lucina nodded as Robin reengaged with Kamui, "Stand down before you get yourself killed!"
"They took my sister!" He raved as Robin blocked his Yato with his own blade, locking eyes with the frenzied man, "You wouldn't understand, so back off!"
"Would I?" Robin thought for a moment, long enough for Kamui to push him back and lock eyes with Corrin again. The princess braced herself, but Kamui found himself taking a lower intensity bolt of electricity to the back before dropping to the ground.
"Never turn your back on an opponent," Robin muttered before locking eyes with Corrin, "I-"
However, before he could finish that statement, several pellets were thrown around them producing a thick smoke. By the time Robin could blow it away, Kamui had been carried away. Robin berated himself mentally even as the Hoshidans were already falling back. He had to make a call on whether to stay with Corrin or chase after Kamui. Unfortunately, Kamui would be harder to get to, so he made his decision.
"Lucina, we need to hurry before he gets too far away."
"Wait," Robin barely took a step before the Nohrian princess called out to him, "Who are you? What's going on?"
Turning with a sigh, Robin introduced himself, "My name is Robin. This is Lucina."
"A pleasure," Lucina curtsied with a hint of her regal background showing.
"We're trying to help," Robin continued, "There is a force manipulating both Nohr and Hoshido into war. We're trying to stop that."
"And who, praytell, is behind these actions?" Gunter stepped up, eying the pair with scrutiny, but not dismissal.
"I don't suppose you've ever heard the name Anankos?" The dumbfounded looks he received confirmed it, "So, you see my problem."
"You do not exactly make a strong case," The knight furrowed his brow with his arms behind his back.
"I assure you," Lucina spoke in her most sincere voice, "We are not here to deceive you."
"Ah yes, we should just take your word that our nation has been co-opted," Jakob rolled his eyes, "They promised after all!"
"Enough!" Corrin put her hand up in a trick she had seen Xander use. After a moment she looked to Robin, "Do you have any proof of your claims?"
"We're still working on that," Robin admitted, "It's clear we'll need something potent. Once we have it, you'll be one of the first to know, but right now, we need to catch up with the Hoshidans."
"That man…he claimed to be my brother. What do you know about him? Why would he try such a delusional lie?"
"Is it so delusional?" Robin raised a brow.
"I only have two brothers. Both of which are back in Nohr."
Robin was silent for a bit, watching Nicole and Odin out of the corner of his eyes. They were tense, "How much do you know of your youth?"
"Not much. Just that Hoshido tried to kidnap me so I was forced to live in the Northern Fortress until I could defend myself."
"And what if such an attempt had been successful?" Robin mused, moreso to himself, "Excuse me, it is not my place. Now, will you allow us to leave peacefully, or do we have to force our way out?"
Corrin watched him carefully before nodding, "Everyone, stand down."
"Milady?" Jakob asked incredulously.
"You heard me," She did not break eye contact with Robin, "We'll let him see if he can prove his claims. Besides, I'm not sure we could stop them if we wanted to."
"Thank you," The tactician nodded, "We'll be in touch."
"Not as enemies I hope."
Robin smirked, "So do I."
"And then I move them over here real quick, and…checkmate!"
The manakete yawned and lazily glanced at the board, "I lose again?"
"Yep. Might have something to do with dozing through half my turns."
"Sorry, I do struggle to stay awake when sitting still," Tiki forced herself to sit up on the couch.
"So, board games are not your thing. Noted." Morgan literally made note of such and set the book back down, "Well, have we done anything you found fun?"
"Oh, quite a bit," She yawned, not exactly selling her point, "I'm just afraid I'm still drowsy from being woken up suddenly."
"Huh? You slept till noon."
"I mean back during the war. Those ruffian Valmese woke me from my slumber prematurely. As a dragon, things tend to stretch out for me. Including drowsiness."
"Oh…that sounds pretty terrible."
Tiki smiled at her bluntness. It was…refreshing, "It has its moments. Still, I am honored for you to devote so much time to helping me regain some of my lost childhood. It is an especially kind gesture."
"Daw, don't mention it. I've had a blast, but don't think I'm done just yet. I've got quite an itinerary over the next few days. I also want to try out some stuff. I…probably did it myself when younger."
"Right, I sometimes forget you also suffer from amnesia."
"Heh, like father like daughter, huh?"
"Perhaps," Tiki eyed the girl analytically, "To a degree."
"Heh, now rest well, tomorrow we build model ships."
The ancient manakete smiled, "Very well. I will see you then. Good night."
"Good night!"
A/N: The Morgan parts were going somewhere, but I'm not even sure if I want to keep that plotline.
Chapter 12: Chapter 11
Chapter Text
Kamui grit his teeth as he walked through the dim forest. It was not supposed to go this way. He was supposed to be on his way home with his sister in tow. If those strangers had not gotten involved, he was certain that he would have been successful.
Just who were they? Those two were skilled, he could not deny it. The man had fought him off with ease. Had he not been distracted, Kamui would begrudgingly admit that he likely would have never gotten any advantage.
"Milord," Kaze walked up beside the prince, "They're following us."
"Are you certain?" Kamui looked over before realizing how silly that was, "Of course you are. Fighting them doesn't seem to be an option. How close are we to the border?"
"Not too far, though traversal might not be very easy. We'll have to find a bridge."
"We don't have much time then. Let's go."
Ryoma was never known for having much of a night life. He had heard that the capital did have one like most large cities, he just never participated. That meant he was quite out of place sitting alone at a bar in Cheve. It did not help that he stood taller than anyone else in the establishment.
He was not truly alone, of course. Saizo and Kagero had hidden themselves among the patrons with far more skill than he could muster. The great crown prince of Hoshido, brought low by social interaction.
Eventually he was joined at the bar by another cloaked figure. One much smaller than himself.
"You don't exactly blend in, you know?"
"I am out of my element."
"Kinda weird to send a diplomat that isn't good with people," The distinctly feminine voice teased which did not help Ryoma's sense of helplessness.
"I am fine with people. It's…the setting."
"A stick in the mud I see. I'll have to work on that."
Ryoma cleared his throat, "I believe we have serious business to address."
"Hmph," The pout did not last long though as he was right, "Not here. Not tonight. Some bigshot Nohrian is in town. We'll have to be careful."
"I understand," Ryoma nodded, "I'll be careful."
"Yeah, just don't make a scene. We got a place where you can lay low," She slid him a piece of paper, "Head here for now."
"Thank you."
"Heh, we should be thanking you. We'll talk more later."
"Yes, we will."
"What kind of agent is this bad at blending in?" Leo muttered as he looked at the reports. Surely they would have sent a better undercover agent. He had to have others with them. If he did, they were much better at their jobs. All the same, he had his lead.
"Tail him. Discreetly. I doubt a nation famous for its ninja clans wouldn't send some on this mission. They likely already know we've spotted them."
Once he was left alone, Leo looked back at the reports. Matters here were very close to getting out of hand. He did at least have a name. Scarlet. She was the ringleader around here. If he could deal with her, then he hoped the rebellion would fall apart without the need for civilian casualties.
The Hoshidans made matters more difficult. If King Garon learned they were actively consorting with the enemy, he would like order the city burned to the ground. Anything to gain an advantage he supposed. His father may have been brutal, but to put civilians in such danger in the first place was hardly an honorable tactic.
So then why did that lunatic's words still ring in his ears? That man easily could have killed him had he wanted to. Yet he did not.
He looked down at the reports, tapping his gauntleted fingers against the table. He had time before his operatives could act. He had time. Standing, he grabbed his cloak.
"I'm headed out," He informed the head of staff, "Keep me apprised of any developments."
The Bottomless Canyon was as dour as ever. Few knew just how fitting that title was. In a way, it really did not have a bottom. Simply being here made Azura uncomfortable as it reminded her of all that she had lost. Now she had lost two mothers, and while she could do little to avenge one, she could hurt Nohr at least.
This was their planned extraction route. Even if she was too late to assist with that mission, she was sure Kamui would be going on more. He was not the type to sit idly by. Especially when he finally got a chance to let loose.
It seemed her timing was impeccable though as she saw Kamui emerging from the woodline just as she began crossing the old bridge. Something was wrong though. They looked…hurried. More than that, his sister was nowhere to be seen.
"Azura?" Kamui called out once he noticed her, "What are you…nevermind, run!"
"What's wrong?"
Her answer came quickly enough as Kaze was sent flying out of the woods as she finally met up with them. Azura expected a whole platoon of Nohrians to come storming out of the forest. What she got was two individuals.
"Who are they?" The songstress asked.
"Very persistent pains in my rear," Kamui growled, clutching the Yato.
"Will you just hold on for a second," Robin yelled in exasperation, "We're not here to hurt you."
Kamui glanced sidelong at the recovering Kaze who had a seemingly dislocated shoulder.
"That was self defense."
"Then why were you were working with the Nohrians?"
"We were trying to keep you from killing each other," Robin put his hands up and walked forward carefully, "I know your claims are true, but Nohr isn't your enemy."
"You say you know I'm right, but you have the audacity to tell me they aren't my enemies?" Kamui snarled, his posture growing aggressive. Azura grew concerned as she could feel his dragonstone resonating. The strangers may have sensed it too as both of them grew exceptionally defensive.
"Think about it. Do you think all of them actually had any part in what happened? How many do you think even know about it?"
"I don't care!" He roared as he transformed, "They took my sister, and I'll make them all pay for it!"
Robin had to dive quickly to avoid the dragon lunging for him. The dragon reared up and turned his attention to Lucina who held up Falchion making the dragon back away a bit. It growled and instead turned back to Robin who just so happened to end up next to a concerned Azura.
The songstress was not quite sure what to think here. That sword clearly gave Kamui pause. If they meant them direct harm, they could easily deliver it. What did they know? Could they possibly know about Valla? If they did, surely they knew it was hopeless.
In one quick move, Kamui slammed his tail down where Robin stood. It was aimed at the tactician, but Robin tackled Azura out of the way just in case. It was for her own safety, but the dragon did not see it that way as he roared even louder. All the while, Lucina had to think quick as attacking with Falchion would likely mean his death or grievous injury.
Despite the danger, Robin still helped Azura stand, but the footing near the edge was unstable. The edge gave way even as they were still getting to their feet. It was all Robin could do to grab her while the earth gave way beneath them.
He was able to keep her close, but he still had to think quickly to come up with some way to avoid going splat. He was a bit hamstrung what with having to carry the random bluenette, but he was able to use his telekinetic trick to grab his wind tome from his coat.
"One shot…"
Kamui roared and went to pursue, but Lucina would not let him pass. As furious as he was, he was not about to charge into that blade. Fortunately, he did not have to. His wings were not just for show, even if they could not sustain him for long. Flying around the swordswoman, he rushed over to the canyon.
He looked frantically, but he did not see her. He could not survey for long without landing, but there was no sign of either of them. With his wings already tiring, he could not keep up any sort of search either. Returning to the bridge, Kamui reverted to his human form.
"All forces…fall back."
"Milord?" Kaze clutched his left arm.
Kamui shook his head, and Kaze got the message.
"We're just leaving?" Rinkah grunted despite the likely broken rib she had.
"There's nothing we can do," He glared at Lucina who was eying them, but not pursuing, "This isn't over. I will avenge her…and I will rescue my sister."
"I suggest you leave," Lucina clutched Falchion. She had faith in her husband to be harder to kill than that. If she were wrong though, she may not be able to restrain herself. "Before you get hurt any further."
Kamui glared, but even he knew he was outmatched and they hurried across the bridge. Lucina watched them leave with unwavering focus. Until they were out of earshot at least.
"Robin? Are you there?" There was no response immediately, but after a second she heard him.
"Yeah, we're fine."
Lucina let out a sigh of relief, "You had me concerned. Where are you?"
"Down here!" Robin called, standing over the shaken, dizzy, and confused, but very much not pancaked songstress, "There was a small cave in the side of the rock. Emphasis on small. We'll be up in a bit."
"Very well, I'll keep guard."
"You ready to go?" Robin eyed Azura as she still worked to pull herself together.
She looked up at him with uncertainty and distrust, "What do you plan to do with me?"
Robin sighed, "That depends on you. I'd rather not fight you, as that would waste time I could be using to find Anankos."
The mere mention of that name seemed to make Azura go pale, "How do you know that name?"
Robin raised his brow, "How do you?"
The songstress looked away, realizing her mistake. "It doesn't matter. It is a threat we cannot deal with. Nohr is one we can though. Join us. You don't seem malicious. You could help us bring justice to this world."
The tactician folded his arms, "And when Anankos comes knocking?"
"If he could leave his realm, I imagine he already would have."
"Pretty big assumption to make. He could just as easily be afraid of Nohr and Hoshido's combined might. Why play into his hands if you know about him instead of trying to fight?"
"If we thwart the Nohrians, we thwart him as well, setting his plans back. It's all we can do."
"You speak as if you know for certain."
Once again, she looked away. Robin narrowed his eyes.
"I see…well, is it worth being used yourself? Even if you defeat Nohr, you may be just the wounded prey Anankos wants. Also, what is to keep Hoshido from being corrupted, just like Nohr?"
"Hoshido will never be like Nohr!" She finally found her courage, "They're kind…and caring. They don't leave a young girl alone at best, and beat at worst just because her mother was favored."
"You would judge a whole nation based off the actions of a few?"
"Depends on who those people were. How much do you really know about Nohr's royal family?"
"I know that Garon is compromised, but the princes and princesses seem to genuinely care about their people. I have it on good authority they try to keep their hands as clean as possible given their situation."
Azura scoffed, "Empty words."
"You seem to know a lot, and I'll fully admit I don't have all the details, but I have bigger matters to tend to than your grudges. I will stop Anankos, but that doesn't mean a whole lot if you still kill each other out of your own bitterness. Would you really let yourself be used if it meant revenge for a painful past?"
"You can't possibly imagine what I've been through." To her credit, the songstress did not back down. Robin would not exactly call it a virtue in this case though.
"No, I cannot, but I want to stop this war, kill the monster responsible, and save lives. I do not have time for your stubborn hatred to get in the way of that."
Azura did not answer immediately, so Robin put a pin in the conversation with a sigh as he massaged the bridge of his nose. Then, he offered a hand, "Come on. Lucina's waiting."
Robin hoisted the songstress up on his back before climbing up. She was not all that heavy, but even still, Robin realized he did not feel strained on the climb up whatsoever. Something he would have to consider later.
Climbing back over the edge, Robin let the songstress down and joined his wife who gave him a tight hug. One he returned happily. As nice as the embrace was, he still had matters to tend to though.
"So, what will you do?"
Azura looked uneasy, but she finally looked Robin in the eyes, "Anankos is a force which you could not possibly imagine."
"Our imaginations are pretty broad," Robin replied firmly, "This is not our first time facing down something like this, and we came out more or less okay."
"You really believe that you can do this," Azura thought for a moment, "How…can I be sure this isn't some sort of trap?"
"You have but our word, I admit," Lucina stepped forward, "But we give it that we only mean to liberate your peoples and save lives."
"Pretty words…but you have a point. I cannot let my personal desires cloud my judgement. I will talk with the Hoshidan royals and see if they would be willing to sit down with you. You can make your case then, but I make no promises that I will endorse this plan."
"Thanks. We'll beat this, I promise."
"I am not so sure, but…I will hear you out. You are different, but I will be keeping my expectations low."
"That is all we ask," Lucina nodded.
"I'll be in touch. There is a village not too far from here. I'll make contact there."
As she left, Robin watched on, "I wonder who she really is. She seemed intimately familiar with both Anankos and the Nohrian royals."
"How could that be?"
"I don't know," Robin furrowed his brow, "But for now, we trust her."
A/N: For as much as she's painted a neutral party, I found that she was very prejudice against Nohr, and, yeah, she has her reasons, but she definitely has her bias.
Chapter 13: Chapter 12
Chapter Text
"Report!" Xander demanded as he walked into the war room.
"The Hoshidans are mounting their forces," The general replied before pointing at part of the map, "We expect them to strike here."
"They were more prepared than we thought," Xander thought with a hand to his chin for a few minutes, "We'll have to handle this before mounting our own assault. How many men can we spare?"
"Princess Camilla is still preparing for the invasion, and prince Leo is still preoccupied with the rebels. We can put together a few spare battalions, but a lot of our forces are tied up."
"Hmm, is Princess Corrin back yet?"
"No, but she should return before the operation."
"Have her briefed as soon as she arrives. This will be a good learning experience for her. Get ready. We ride as soon as she returns."
"Yes, sir."
"Xander!" The prince stood stiff and looked behind him.
"Elise? What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to see if there was anything I could do to help!" The youngest princess declared confidently with her fists on her hips.
"I appreciate the effort, but Father wants you here, out of harm's way. I know I"ll feel better if you're away from the fighting."
"Hey," She puffed her cheeks out, "I can help too!"
"I know you can, but Father's orders are law. You'll just have to find a way to help here."
"That's not the same."
"I know it isn't," Xander leaned down and put a hand on her shoulder, "I promise, when this is over, we'll all go do something fun together. All of us, together. This time, even Corrin will get to go."
The princess huffed, "You'd better come back safe and sound!"
"Heh," He straightened up and ruffled her hair though his smile was still tense like it often was these days, "It will take more than a few Hoshidans to bring me down."
"I'm going to hold you to that."
"By all means. Now, I must continue our preparations."
"Hmph," Elise puffed up after leaving the war room. "I'll show him. I can be a help."
Kamui stumbled into the castle. He had not slept or stopped since their encounter at the Canyon. The first words he spoke were growling out an order to his troops to get their wounds tended to.
"Hey, you ain't doin' great yourself," His retainer huffed, not exactly feeling good himself, but he had not been wounded at least. In part because he knew better than to attack either Lucina or Robin.
"I'm fine," He grunted, pushing past some guards, "Where's Ryoma?"
"Hey," Caeda stepped in front of him with hands on her hips, "I know its rough, but this isn't how heroes act."
"I"m not a hero," Kamui's face reflexively curled into a snarl, "I failed two sisters now."
"You don't know that," Caeda stood firm, "Maybe things aren't what they seem."
"I saw her fall!" Kamui lashed out. Most people would have backed down as his teeth sharpened, but the bluenette did not. In a moment, he calmed back down, "I'm sorry. I know you're trying to help, but right now, I need to tell my siblings. They should hear it from me."
"Alright," Caeda nodded, "We're here for ya though."
"Thanks," Kamui responded without looking at them. He could not bear to. Instead he marched forward towards his goal.
He found a castle that was once a warm home now a cold military base. Kind smiles were replaced by grim expressions. There were fewer staff in the corridors and more soldiers on the walls. This was what war did. What the Nohrians did.
Gripping Yato tighter, Kamui approached the throne room only for the guards to tell him that the crown prince was out.
"What? Where?"
"I'm sorry, Prince, we do not know."
"Then who is in charge?"
"Prince Kamui?" The young man turned to see the royal advisor, "Was your mission successful?"
"Where are they?"
The woman raised a brow, but answered regardless, "Prince Ryoma has left on a secret mission. Prince Takumi has left to reinforce the front, and princess Hinoka is surveying the reinforcements. I believe princess Sakura accompanied her."
Seeing that the man was troubled, Reflet gestured in the direction of her office, "Perhaps I could lend an ear?"
Kamui nodded and followed along. Her office was not far. She had taken Yukimura's office after his untimely passing. The office itself was sparsely decorated, but Kamui did not pay it much mind in his current state.
Once the door was closed, Kamui explained how his mission went. Reflet listened on for most of it without reaction. Though, she did show a bit of interest at parts.
"This man in a cloak, you say he fell into the Bottomless Canyon as well?"
"Yes, I couldn't see either of them. They must have fallen in. I failed her…"
Reflet did not say anything for a minute, "I see matters are more dire than we knew. Do you trust me, Prince Kamui?"
"Of course, why do you ask?"
"That man is dangerous. Most do not even know he exists. Eliminating him would be a great boon, however, his allies are still dangerous. He rarely acts alone. You can bet he has more help. I don't know if it's limited to the woman with him either. Even without him, they'll be a threat."
The prince growled, "I won't let them. I'll kill them all!"
Reflet nodded, "For now, you should go with Hinoka to reinforce Takumi. Be careful though. His agents could be anywhere."
"You can count on me!" Kamui stood and ran to finish his preparations, exhaustion forgotten.
Once he was gone, Reflet turned to look out her window, "The Bottomless Canyon. What might you find there, Brother?"
"Phew," Corrin wiped her brow once they were inside the safety of the castle walls, "It's good to be back."
"Have you considered what you will tell His Highness?" Gunter asked calmly from atop his horse, but there was a hint of reservation in his voice.
The princess furrowed her brow, "From everything you've said…" She looked over at the younger of the twin maids who looked quite nervous, "I don't think Father or Xander need to know. Just that we encountered Hoshidan forces making an incursion against the Ice Tribe's wishes and they were repelled."
"Thank you, Lady Corrin." Felicia bowed, "Flora meant well. I just wish she had told me before acting."
"Hmph, so you could betray us as well?" Jakob raised a scowling brow at the maid.
"That's not fair, Jakob," Corrin stepped in, "You know Felicia would never betray us, and Flora didn't want to hurt us. She just felt that she had no other choice."
"You are far too forgiving, I fear. To so easily pardon such actions while even leaving the master-ngh," Jakob grunted as Gunter smacked him upside the back of the head with a firm scowl, "Ahem, perhaps we should have brought your full retainer staff. What if more unsavory behavior were to happen in our absence?"
Jakob side eyed the knight, but he seemed satisfied at the veiled language. The knight eyed the guards, but if they had picked up on anything, they showed no signs of it.
"I believe we can trust her," Corrin smiled, "But I appreciate your concern." She then turned her attention to their guests. She had been surprised to learn that Leo had placed them under her command until he was finished with his mission. Corrin honestly had no idea what to do with the two unique fighters.
"You two were really…loud during the battle, but you've barely said a word since. Is something wrong? You're not mad at being under my command are you?"
"Perish the thought!" The blonde man said suddenly and loudly, making Corrin start a little, "We are honored that prince Leo would see us as worthy enough to defend his precious sister. I apologize if we gave that impression. We have simply been pondering recent events and their impacts on this fair land."
"These are troubling times for certain," Gunter nodded solemnly, "Your home towns are not in danger of receiving any of the fighting I hope."
"N-no," The meek archer replied, "They're out of the way."
"That's good," Gunter nodded before turning to more pressing matters, "We should be prepared for our next orders. Princess Corrin, you may want to reach out to the Crown Prince."
"Right, I'll do just that. You all rest up. I…need to talk to him anyway."
"We're ready for your call."
"Thanks, Gunter. It means a lot."
"This is quite the operation you have here," Ryoma complimented after touring the rebel base, "I'm surprised you managed to build this much of a resistance."
"Nohr has made a lot of people mad lately," The resistance leader, Scarlet, plopped herself up on a crate, "So, what do you think, oh great Crown Prince?"
"Please, just Ryoma will suffice," Ryoma turned his head back towards the supplies and the few men walking around the base, "Your people are well equipped, but I am concerned about your level of training and lack of mounts. Nohr is infamous for their cavalry. Without the proper training and equipment, they'll ride right over you."
"My, my, your concern is touching, if not surprising," She looked at the prince curiously. This had not been what she had expected. She expected someone eager to use them as bodies in the fight against Nohr, not genuine concern for their safety.
"You are still people, and I do not like throwing lives away."
"Even Nohrian lives?" Scarlet raised a brow.
"You are victims of the Nohrians yourselves. I'm not sure you can be called Nohrians anymore."
"Hmph," Scarlet hopped off the crate, "Up until about twenty years ago, most people didn't have a problem with King Garon from what I hear. I was too young to remember much, but a lot of our people still like Nohr, just not the crown. I don't think they'd take kindly to becoming Hoshidans."
"If independence is what you want, then something can be worked out. I can't promise you a reformed Nohr, however."
"Well, that's what negotiations are for, Mr. Stiff. Now, what-"
The blonde woman was cut off by a loud explosion followed by panicked resistance fighters running to and fro without much thought for where they were going. Ryoma's expression grew somber as he grabbed his blade and nodded at Scarlet who already had her ax.
Leo watched with hands behind his back as his troops held their bows at the ready. He was about to signal the mages to fire another volley of spells, closer to the hideout this time, but he held the order when he saw someone coming.
"Why, this is certainly a surprise," Leo smirked deviously, "Crown Prince Ryoma, trespassing on Nohrian soil and conspiring with rebels. You've been busy."
"Prince Leo, I believe," Ryoma stood tall over everyone there, "So, I take it that you're the one who was sent to weed out the resistance fighters."
"Yes, though I admit that I didn't expect to find you 're quite bold, I'll give you that." Leo held a gauntleted hand in front of him while the other opened his tome behind his back, "I won't insult either of our intelligences by asking you to come quietly."
"A wise decision," Ryoma glared down the edge of his blade, "But do not think too highly of yourself. I'm out of your league, Prince Leo."
"We'll just have to see about that, won't we?" Thrusting his right hand downward, Leo caused the Crown Prince to grunt as his knees started to buckle beneath him. He was straining just to stand, and Leo's smirk deepened at the sight of the legendary Ryoma barely able to hold himself upright.
"I'll admit, I expected more. To think, they compare you to Xander."
"You think this will stop me?" The samurai glared as he held his blade upright with some amount of effort, "You aren't the only one with tricks!"
At Ryoma's beckoning, a bolt of lightning crashed down over Leo's head causing the prince to shout in pain. The Nohrian prince was disoriented, but he did pull a blade out in time to parry Ryoma's lunge, but he was no match for him in close quarters combat, being easily disarmed in one move.
The Hoshidan prince towered over the fallen prince, his blade crackling with electricity. Holding it to Leo's face, Ryoma was about to demand his surrender, but he noticed something approaching him quickly out of the corner of his eye. In one swift motion, he knocked the spinning object out of the air.
"An ax?"
"Milord," Saizo dropped from a nearby rooftop, "The border guard has been alerted to our presence. We are outnumbered two to one."
Leo smirked up at the prince, "Never hurts to have a plan B."
"Oh yeah!" An excited voice yelled, "Nice aim if I do say so myself. Come on, Benny! This is my time to shine."
"I'm here," A knight blocked two shurikens with his thick metal shield as Kagero landed, "You should be more careful."
"Where's the rest of the guard?" Leo demanded after using the distraction to slip back to their position.
"Uh, I may have come ahead," The scantily clad blonde woman smiled apologetically, but it was far from sincere, "But they're still on their way."
"Guess I shouldn't look this gift horse in the mouth," Leo dusted himself off, "Not after they locked down so many of my men. This is not as clean as I was wanting, but sometimes it cannot be helped. Help me in flushing these rebels out of town."
"Aye, aye, sir!"
"Right," Leo locked eyes with the crown prince. With the troops he had already brought and the upcoming reinforcements, it was only a matter of time. They both knew that.
"We need to leave."
"Leave?" Scarlet looked at him like he was crazed, "And abandon our homes?"
"If you stay, you may not have homes much longer. I'm sorry, but you know better than I that King Garon is not known for mercy."
"So they can just burn down our cities while we're gone?"
"That isn't my style," Leo interrupted, "I'm here to hunt rebels. If I can't find any more rebels or sympathizers, I will take my leave."
"We will cover your escape," Saizo brandished a shuriken, "Kagero."
"With you!"
He may have still been tired and wounded, but Leo was far from beaten. As the ninjas threw their weapons, Leo pulled them out of the air with his gravity magic. Not quite as flashy, but it got the job done.
"Keep the pressure on. If they're going to flee, don't let them take any supplies."
Leo had to admit, these two from the border guard had potential. Far too much potential to languish at such a posting. With their help, he was able to at least capture the rebel base. With that, he would be able to somewhat appease his father and have his men surgically remove any remaining elements with their records. The city would not burn today at least.
"You two," Leo turned to the two from the border guard as his men cleaned out the safe house, "What are your names?"
"Charlotte, at your service!" The blonde made a quick salute, quite eager to please.
"My name is Benny," The knight bowed as best he could in his armor.
"Hmm, well, you'll be coming with me. I think your talents could be better used elsewhere."
The blonde seemed rather happy with that. The man went along with it. Either way, Leo had a report to write.
Castle Krakenburg had become all business since the war started, not that it was a fun house beforehand. The atmosphere was all too familiar, and the redhead stomping down the halls wished she never had to see it again. Yet here she was.
Selena just wanted to go home, relax, settle down, and maybe start a family. Maybe it was selfish, but was she not entitled to it at this point? If only that oaf was not so determined to be the hero.
"Hey! Sev…Sel! Hold up!" The redhead froze, going stiff as a board. Why was he not with Prince Leo?
"Odin," Selena still did not make eye contact, "You're back."
"Yeah, I'm glad I found you too. I hear you're heading out with Princess Camilla's detachment, and that she had insisted on joining Xander."
"What of it?" She folded her arms.
"Don't give me that," Odin winced, "I know things have been…strained between us, but I still care about you."
"Yeah, well, if you really care about me, then you'd better take care of yourself. No selfless heroics."
"Heh, that depends on if the old swordhand can stay its might."
Selena was not amused and smacked him on the back of the head, "I'm serious."
"Don't worry," Odin dialed it back, "If you're willing, I would like to have that family you want so bad."
The redhead looked away to hide her blush, "Yeah, well, if you should be so lucky."
The blonde, to his credit, chuckled, "Yeah, I would be. Who wouldn't want a little hero or heroine running around?"
Selena huffed, "Or a little Miss Perfect." She did at least make eye contact though, "I'd like that though."
"Then we must endeavor to see this through to the end so that we may ride off into the sunset together."
"I'll hold you to that," Selena sighed, "Now come on, we have work to do."
Odin started walking along with her, happy to finally see her smile again even if she tried to hide it.
Reflet was at her desk looking over war plans when her door was opened unceremoniously. Only a few people were that bold. Looking up, she saw the last one of that list she was expecting. If she even made it at all.
"Azura, you're alive," Reflet was not surprised she lived, just that she came here so fast.
"Yes, but it seems I'm late to the party. Where are the royals?"
"I believe Lady Sakura is still in town. The rest are partaking in various operations against the Nohrians. Is there anything I could assist you with?"
Azura thought for a moment, "I need to speak with Ryoma. Everything isn't what it seems. Nohr is not our only opponent."
"They aren't?" Reflet raised a brow.
"No, and loathe as I am to admit it, there is a threat to us both, and we may need their help to defeat it."
"Work with the Nohrians? My lady, you know that we are at war with them."
"I know, which is why I need to discuss this with the royals. I'm not entirely certain myself, but we need to at least consider what we should do."
"I see," Reflet stood up and walked around the office, making like she was getting something from a bookshelf. When Azura was no longer looking, she turned and produced an electric spear in her hand.

Reflet took a step closer, electricity crackling in her palm. One quick strike, dispose of the body, and she could keep the blame on the Nohrians to fuel their rage. Simple enough.
Then a knock on the door had her immediately cut the magic.
"Come in," Reflet called out casually.
"Azura! You're alive!" The youngest Hoshido princess jumped into her adopted sister's arms upon seeing her and forgetting her decorum for a moment.
"Sakura!" Azura returned the hug, "Yes, I am. I thought you were in town."
"I just got back," The normally shy princess pulled back to a more respectful distance, "I was coming to report on the general mood of the people and their needs."
"How are the people doing?" Reflet diverted the topic to business.
"They're holding up reasonably well," Sakura diverted her attention to the tactician, "Rationing isn't popular, but they understand the necessity."
"That's good. I must say, you have proven quite a potent ambassador to the people."
"I'm just doing what I can to help," Sakura was never one to gloat, but Azura was also proud of her sister.
"Do not sell yourself short, Sakura," The songstress smiled, "The people love you, and for good reason. You put them at ease."
This left the princess to blush leaving Reflet to try and wriggle her way out of this, "What were you going to do next about this supposed threat?"
"I was going to confer with the royals and deliver their recommendation, but that does not seem possible now."
"Perhaps not all of them, but Sakura has proven herself a valuable ambassador." Reflet nodded to the princess, "Perhaps she could assist."
"While I don't doubt Sakura's abilities to relate with people, she lacks the authority to act."
"Yes, but her endorsement would mean a great deal. If she is willing to attempt it."
"I-I could try. What do you need me to do?"
Azura was uncertain, but she looked down at the shorter princess, "I want you to come with me to meet some people and see what they have to say. I have…much to tell you on the way. If you can get away from your duties here."
"I'm sure I can whip something up to cover for her absence," Reflet offered, "The choice is yours."
"I'll do it," Sakura nodded with determination, "If it will help end this war, I'll do whatever I can."
"Good," Azura smiled proudly, "We will set out immediately. Can you send a message to the others for us, Kanpaku?"
"Leave it to me," Reflet smiled, "I'll take care of things."
"The difference between Nohr and Hoshido is palpable," Lucina noted as they walked through the streets of Izumo. It was sunny, temperate, and colorful village by a river. A stark contrast to what they had experienced so far in their journey.
"No wonder they're so easy to pit against each other," Robin agreed. Two cultures this different, but also right next to each other would naturally butt heads. Throw in a mysterious third party pulling the right strings, and you have a recipe for war.
"We have some time," Lucina noted, "Perhaps we should explore this culture some more."
Robin was less sure, giving her an uncertain look, "We should be keeping a low profile." Seeing the slight disappointment flicker across her face, Robin cracked, "But I'm sure we can avoid drawing too much attention to ourselves."
"Wonderful! We should secure some local clothing to blend in! I saw a shop on our way in."
What had he done?
Robin did at least manage to avoid the worst case scenario by dissuading his wife from the more outlandish options for local attire. The people of this town would never know what he had done for them.
The town itself was welcoming despite the war which Robin found odd. Especially considering they had come dressed far more like Nohrians than they had Hoshidans. Sure, the town was relatively close to the border and they may have been used to that, but Robin expected a little more scrutiny because of the proximity.
He supposed it was for the best though. They would need to be here for a few days at least. Granted, he had already plotted several escape plans in case Azura had staged a trap for them, but in the meantime, he would enjoy this rare moment of respite with his wife.
"Ah, there you are, my esteemed guests."
The couple stopped in place and looked behind to where a strange man in white and black garb stood with an almost eerie smile. He bore an unfamiliar mark on his forehead and his eyes were barely open almost like Henry.
"Are you talking to us?" Robin did not adjust his posture, but he was definitely on edge. This man was not normal.
"Who else would I be talking to?" The strange man clapped his hands together, "I would like to invite you to dinner."
"Invite us where?" Lucina raised her brow.
"Oh, just to my humble abode. Come, come! We have much to discuss!"
The husband and wife shared a curious look before Lucina shrugged and Robin sighed, "Alright. Lead the way."
"Izumo?" Subaki raised a brow, "That's a bit out of the way, isn't it?"
"That is exactly why I picked it," Azura did not look back. They had just set out. Sakura took her retainers naturally, but otherwise, they traveled light. For some time, they listened to Azura's explanation, and while it seemed far-fetched, they did not really have a way to refute her. Sakura believed her regardless, so there was not much to be done.
"Do you believe that these people are trustworthy?" Sakura asked after the explanation.
"I do not know. They knew things that few know, but that does not mean that they are to be trusted."
"So you want us to be on guard," Hana confidently held the hilt of her katana.
"I want you to be skeptical, and to keep a way out if needed. From what I saw, we wouldn't be able to beat them in a fight."
"Milady," Subaki scoffed, "Give us a little bit of credit. We are some of the finest that Hoshido has to offer. Even Hana."
"Hey! What do you mean 'even?'"
"I am well aware of that," Azura kept walking, "And what I said holds true. One of them easily kept Kamui at bay while he was in his dragon form, and they had his entire task force on the run and injured without actively trying to kill them. I dare say they are at least on Ryoma's level of skill."
This silenced Sakura and her retainers. They had all seen Ryoma at work. Even when he was not fighting for real, he was easily considered the best soldier in Hoshido. To have two people of his skill as free agents was something to take seriously. Even Subaki and Hana did not have a comeback. Instead, they focused on how to protect their liege should this meeting not go well.
"This is quite the showing of hospitality," Robin admitted after they had finished their third course, "But I have to ask, why us?"
The mysterious man smirked, "My dear guests, you two are special, and you don't need my specific talents to see that."
"What kind of talents?" Lucina asked in a mix of genuine curiosity as well as suspicion.
"Ah yes, that might help," The man set his tea down, "I can see things, and I can see that you two are special."
"You see the future?" Robin raised a brow.
"Not exactly. It's hard to explain, but that comes to why you two fascinate me so. You see, you two are nothing like the others here."
"What does that mean?" Lucina shuffled a bit.
"Frankly, I don't know, but you…" He eyed the bluenette, "You aren't from around here I take it?" At their sudden silence, he smiled, "No need to answer. I admit, I'm keen to see what role you will play here."
"What do you know about the situation?"
"Bits and pieces," Their host shrugged, "As I said, it's extremely taxing, but you two are anomalies. Wild cards if you will. If anyone can help us off this dark path, it would be you two."
He leaned back and smiled, "I haven't been this excited in a long time."
Azura and Sakura walked into Izumo casually in an attempt not to draw attention to themselves. Taking their seats on the patio of a simple restaurant and inn, they did not have to wait long before the otherworldly duo joined them.
"Who's this?" Lucina asked curiously as they sat.
"This is Princess Sakura. The youngest of the Hoshidan royals."
"A pleasure," Sakura was proud of herself for not stuttering as she bowed politely.
"The pleasure is mine. You remind me somewhat of our daughter."
"Please, Morgan is nowhere near that polite. Or calm."
"You have a daughter?" Sakura smiled, "How cute."
"Uh, yeah, it's…complicated," Robin cleared his throat, "But down to business. Were you able to talk to the Crown Prince?"
"No," A shake of the head emphasized her lack of success, "But I was able to bring Sakura. I want her to hear you out as well as to learn more myself."
"Very well," Robin nodded, "Though you know things we don't I imagine."
"I will be using that to judge your authenticity."
"Fair enough."
Robin proceeded to go over the basics of what they knew, including that they had agents in Hoshido as well. If they were smart, they would probably be able to figure out who the plants were anyway after finding out they had some people in Nohr.
Sakura seemed baffled and horrified by the idea that they were being manipulated, but Azura remained stone-faced during the whole thing. Everything they said seemed to check out, but she had no idea who this was that reached out to them. That was not a reassuring thought.
"I-I can't believe it…" Stunned, Sakura struggled to speak, "Have we really been tricked?"
"I can confirm that Anankos is a very real threat. One that I hoped would be contained in Valla," Amber eyes looked at the two strangers, "It seems that was a naive hope. Do you have a plan for defeating this foe though?"
"Still working on that," A sheepish Robin admitted, "For one, we did not know where this Anankos even was."
"I do know how to get there," Azura admitted, "But assaulting him with just us would be a foolhardy effort. His army is large. We will need a considerable force to be able to challenge him."
"What about a smaller assassination attempt," Robin suggested, "A smaller force might be able to sneak in and take him out."
"Perhaps, but he himself is powerful. Besides, even if you could kill him, if you don't expose him, then Hoshido and Nohr will remain at war."
"That's true, we'll need to-" His words trailed off as Lucina jumped up and onto the table suddenly before leaping forward to slice an arrow in two.
"Assassins!"
"Where?" Robin was up in a flash, weapons drawn.
Lucina narrowed her eyes, ignoring the scrambling Hoshidan delegation. After a moment, she saw something that did not quite fit. Pointing Falchion forward, she called it out.
"There! They have a slight distortion that gives them away."
"I see it," The tactician called as he shot a thoron bolt that ended the archer threat, "Cloaking magic. Fun." Casting a side eye, Robin continued, "I don't suppose you two had anything to do with this."
"No," A troubled Azura clutched her lance, "In fact, we only told one person…oh no."
"Save that thought!" Fireballs rained down on their location with Robin intercepting as many as he could with his own spells, but a few still got through.
"Sakura! Go help Izana with an evacuation. We'll deal with the attackers."
The princess looked uncomfortable, but a hand on her shoulder from Azura refocused her, "Do what he says. We'll meet up in the middle of town."
"Sure you're up to it?" Robin asked even as the…male pegasus knight and samurai that had been hiding across the street during their meeting ran to join their liege.
"I may be a performer, but I am not helpless. Besides, this is my problem more than you know."
"Then keep the flank and take care of any that get through. Lucina and I will handle the front line."
"I understand," Azura gripped her lance tight as the two faced off against the assailants. This time, she got a better look at their abilities when they were not holding back. She was both impressed and somewhat terrified by what she saw.
They worked exceptionally well together. On the rare occasion that either of them left an opening, the other moved in to fill it like water filling in a crack. They were fluid, adaptable, and most of all, deadly.
Snapping out of her deldrome, she snapped her polearm up and into the gut of a Vallite soldier.
"I'm sorry…for everything. I will make this right."
"Hana! Get down!" Subabi yelled as he dove in and pinned the Vallite soldier sneaking up on her, "Hah. Looks like you owe me now."
"Please don't argue!" Sakura screamed as she shot an arrow wide, but it did alert the two to another soldier. Hana acted quickly and cut him down.
"Relax, just some friendly banter. Isn't that right, Hana?"
"Not now, Subaki, this is serious."
"Hmph, I assure you I'm taking this quite seriously," He replied even as he dashed off to protect two civilians being hounded by the cloaked soldiers.
"Quite a colorful cast you have here."
The princess nearly jumped out of her skin as Izana walked up beside her, "W-who are you?"
"Apologies for the scare, but I am keen to protect my village here. Mind if I assist?" Planting his staff onto the ground, he summoned a barrier to protect the central building from a volley of attacks.
"These scoundrels will be the death of us." He scowled in a rare expression of frustration. "Such strange individuals."
"Do you know anything about them?"
"No, but they are like a shadow descending, but I cannot ascertain what, or rather, who, is casting this shadow."
Sakura swallowed as Subaki brought in an injured villager. Clutching her staff she ran to help. She did not know about shadows and the like, but she would do what she could. She would help her people, no matter what stood in her way.
"I miss my enemies not being practically invisible," Robin lamented as he sent out a waved of electricity, "Don't know what you have until it's gone."
"It simply takes a finely honed eye," Lucina replied as she deftly cut through two invisible soldiers, "I'm surprised you can't see them."
"I never said I couldn't," Robin landed behind Lucina after bisecting another Vallite.
Despite his humorous banter, Robin was moving with a deathly precision. Lucina kept up well, but Robin did not seem to even remotely wear down. Even Lucina had to admit that it was somewhat chilling seeing the normally warm and kind man become a killing machine. It was times like these that she was reminded how glad she was that he was a good man.
While they were able to repel most of the assault, it had been a large force. They were not able to keep all of them from entering the town. Those that got through started to set fire to the village. Sakura and her retainers were helping Izana as best they could, but there was only so much they could do.
"Tell them to contain it as best they can. If it hits the town center, there will be no stopping it until it devastates the whole town."
"What will you do?" Lucina asked, "What can you do?"
"Not sure it'll work, but you remember that river when we walked in?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm gonna bring a bit of it over here."
Lucina blinked, but she knew better than to question him at this point, "Be quick."
Robin nodded and bolted for the nearby river. Getting there was the easy part, but time was of the essence. Arriving at the river, he pulled out a wind tome. He did a quick estimation of how far he would have to go and swallowed. Taking a deep breath, he prepared to cast.
Channeling his energy, he summoned the largest wind funnel he had ever produced. Picking up as much water as he could manage, Robin pushed the vortex higher and began his march over to the fires. He put nearly all of his focus into maintaining the spell, taking each step one at a time.
A few more steps. He was almost there. He could hear the townspeople. Wails of loss and confusion. He would help them. He would save what he could.
Once he was finally in position, he let the twister dissipate and let out a breath as the water fell on the growing blaze, dowsing it in one fell swoop. As Robin let himself relax, he sighed. That was not exactly pleasant, but he had expected it to take a bit more out of him.
"That was quite a display," Izana smiled, "I must thank you for putting out that blaze."
"Don't mention it," Robin waved a hand dismissively.
"I fear this may have been inadvertently my fault," Azura admitted shamefully as Lucina checked on Robin's condition, "We only told one person we were coming here, and it was supposed to be a secret to all save the royal family. The Kanpaku. The highest advisor in the land. A mysterious woman named Reflet."
This caught Robin's attention, "This woman. Does she have white hair and brown eyes much like me?"
"Now that you mention it, yes. There is some resemblance."
"Yeah," Robin dusted himself off, "She's why we're here in the first place. I think your Kanpaku traitor might also be my sister."
"Your sister?"
"We're estranged," Robin added quickly, "Still, how could she have gotten wrapped up in this?"
"I can help explain what I know on the way, but for now, we need to hurry. If she is compromised, my siblings may be in danger."
"Right. We'll sort this out on the way."
"I'm afraid we part ways here," Izana bowed, "My people do still need me."
"Of course," Azura bowed back.
"May you change this land's fate."
"No pressure," Robin muttered.
"To be fair, we are used to it," Lucina smiled, but the Hoshidans gave her a strange look. Robin chuckled. If only they knew.
Chapter 15: Chapter 14
Chapter Text
"What is the meaning of this!?" Hinoka threw the report down in a rage, "Who approved this?"
"Seems the nobility approved it in the absence of the royals," Azama said nonchalantly with his passive smile still in place. How even he could smile at a time like this, Hinoka did not know nor particularly care.
"Well, tell them to reverse it! If they don't want to listen to me, then they can ask Ryoma before he makes their heads roll!"
"I will certainly make sure they get the message," The healer bowed before wandering off.
"The nerve of those people!" Hinoka snarled as she slammed her desk.
"Calm down, Hinoka," Takumi spoke for the first time since they had received the report.
"Maybe you should get a little angrier."
"This was always a possibility," The prince folded his arms, not backing down, "She is Nohrian at the end of the day, no matter how much you dress her up like a Hoshidan."
"She's our sister!"
"No, she's a hostage," Takumi kept a hard expression, "Like it or not, that's what she was despite her cushy cell. It's only natural to want to get back at her captors. I admit, she's a pretty good actress."
"Takumi!" Hinoka shouted, not caring about decorum, "How can you say that after everything we've been through!?"
"Because I'm a realist. Do you think it's really impossible that she could have played us? You saw the evidence. How else could they have discovered our plans at the border?"
"I…I don't know."
"If you have that much faith in her, then have faith she'll make it through a trial."
"Hmph, I expect you to apologize when you're proven wrong."
"We'll see," Takumi picked up his bow, "Now, come on, we need to prepare for battle."
HInoka looked back at the report on her desk before reluctantly following her brother. She would get to the bottom of this after the battle.
"The enemy has been sighted just south of their border village. Scouts have reported that Princess Hinoka and Prince Takumi are leading the force."
"I expected the Crown Prince to be leading the forces," Xander thoughtfully stroked his chin, "I wonder where he could be?"
"Probably still trying to crawl back to Hoshido," All heads turned as the second prince of Nohr joined them. He was clearly weary from the fast paced travel, but he was at least in one piece.
"Leo!" Camilla voiced her surprise, "I thought you were on your way to report to Father."
"I was," Leo seemed more than a little annoyed, "But Iago sent an emergency message that I was to meet up with the main army immediately with these sealed orders," Leo put an envelope with Garon's seal on the table, "Not that I have a particularly large force, though I did find two recruits with promise while on my mission. They may be candidates for an elite strike force."
"Oh? Did you have something in mind?" Xander was interested now, watching his brother as he opened the sealed envelope.
"It would not hurt to have a small, highly mobile team to help with operations that a full army cannot mobilize quickly enough to deal with or where subtlety is needed."
"And who would you suggest to lead it?"
"Well, she's inexperienced, but Corrin is clever and quite likeable. I think she'd be able to get such a ragtag group to work together."
Xander thought for a moment, "Not a bad idea, however, I have a condition. I want you to serve as a strategic advisor. Corrin may be clever, but she lacks your tactical acumen and is a novice commander."
"A sound idea," Leo nodded, "I'll also make some suggestions as for who may join."
"Good. I'll brief Corrin. In the meantime, get some rest. You look awful."
"Heh, as if there's time for sleep, but I'll try."
"What?" Kamui did not know how to process what he had just been told, "She's…she's alive?"
"That's what the report says," Takumi commented somberly, "But I think you're missing the big picture here."
"What do you mean?" Kamui looked genuinely curious.
"Kamui, did you not read the report past the first sentence? She's been labeled a traitor."
"What?" The prince began frantically looking the report over in detail, "Reports found in her room…Nohrian contacts…revealing military secrets…what? Who wrote this?"
"The Council approved it after the evidence was compiled and presented by Reflet."
"The Kanpaku?" Kamui looked confused. He trusted her. She had not been wrong so far, so if she said it, that would mean…
"Are you okay?" Takumi put a hand on his shoulder.
"I…could she really have betrayed us?"
The older prince sighed, "She is Nohrian at the end of the day. She was a hostage even if we forgot that. It isn't unreasonable that she could have harbored some resentment."
Kamui clenched his fists, "She played us."
"Hey, stay with me here. We'll bring her to justice, just like the rest of the Nohrians."
"She won't get away with this," Kamui muttered, not paying his brother any mind, "She used our kindness. Like a Nohrian."
"Focus, Kamui," Takumi put a hand on the younger prince's shoulder, "Right now, we have a battle. We'll deal with her later."
"Right," Despite his words, Kamui was clearly boiling with rage. So much so that even Takumi was worried. Vengeance was one thing, but he just hoped that Kamui did not do something reckless. He would have to keep an eye on his brother lest he get himself in peril.
"Prince Xander," The blonde bowed, "You called?"
The Crown Prince raised his brow at her attire, but otherwise did not react, "Yes. You may stand."
"To what do I owe this honor?" The woman asked far too eagerly for Xander's liking. He had spent enough time around the nobility to spot a fake. It was one of the reasons he preferred to be on the front lines. Life was much more authentic out here.
"Please have a seat." The woman daintily took a seat looking quite uncomfortable, "Don't worry, you're not in trouble." This put her a bit more at ease, "I have heard that you are quite a menace on the battlefield."
"What? Little old me? I just do what I can, but I fear that I'm not really cut out for it."
Xander looked at her blankly, "That's not what Leo said. Or Mr. Bennett for that matter."
"That little…" She murmured darkly before catching herself, "I mean, I guess I have a bit of natural talent. Not the only thing I'm talented at mind you."
"I'm sure, but that battle prowess is why you're here. We are putting together an elite strike force, and I'm told you are uniquely suited to such a team."
"What makes you say that?"
"Your freakish strength for one. Secondly, you do not seem to like regulations as your attire would imply. This team will have more…lax regulations."
"Will your lordship be leading it?" She blinked her well maintained eyelashes at him to no effect. She was amazed by his will which made her want to crack him all the more.
"No, leadership will fall to Princess Corrin," That news deflated the blonde's mood heavily, "With insight provided by Prince Leo."
"Oh?" That got her to perk up a little, "Will you also be advising?"
"I am busy with the war at large, but I may check in from time to time."
"Then I suppose I could give it a go."
The Prince's face hardened, "This is not for the faint of heart. It will be dangerous and I only want you if you will commit."
"Oh, if that's what you want, it's what you'll get," She smiled dangerously and Xander got the distinct impression he was in this tent with a predator. One he would be keeping an eye on. Seemed she would make that easy for him at least.
"Very well. I'll approve your transfer. Do note, you are working with my sister. Both myself and Princess Camilla would be very displeased if negligence were to get one of our siblings injured."
"Don't you worry. I'll be sure to impress you, my prince."
"I'm…sure you will."
While their last encounter had been on a simple, open field, this time would be different. The border guard would be stationed nearby. The Hoshidans had targeted a border town relatively far away from the nearest fort hoping for a soft target. Xander would show them those hopes were vain.
Under Leo's guidance, Corrin would aim to strike deep at their leadership, hopefully dismantling their efforts with less bloodshed. It was Xander and Camilla's job to divert their attention exactly where they wanted it.
"Worried about the young ones?" Camilla asked as they made their final preparations. Her wyvern was eying him with those glowing eyes. He paid it no mind.
"It will be Corrin's first such operation, but I have every faith in her ability as well as Leo's. They will be fine."
"That is fine general talk, but I'm asking what you feel as their brother."
Xander sighed in a showing of vulnerability few got to see from him, but Camilla was different. She knew him too well for the usual tricks to work on her. That was a two way street though as her femme fatale schtick was not as convincing for him, "I'm their brother. Of course I'm concerned, but worry will get us nowhere."
"Well, you just leave the kiddies to me, and you can focus on being the big bad general. Those do seem to be our lots after all."
Xander paused his mount's armor check, and finally faced his sister, "Are you insinuating I don't care as much about our siblings as you do?"
"I'm just saying that you have other matters keeping you busy. It's no shame that you may slip up on the more…minute details." She looked at him in a manner that dared him to respond. Challenge accepted.
"Just because I spend a lot of time in the field doesn't mean I neglect our siblings. I'll have you know that I know quite a bit about them."
"Sounds to me like you're getting defensive," The elder princess smirked, "It's no shame, really. You're a busy man. Just leave tending to them to me. Oh, or are you worried that you'll be left out? Well, I see the simple solution is to find yourself a queen to dote over. Oh, but just one please."
"C–Camilla!"
"Though I do wonder where you'll find your love. Those delicate noble girls simply aren't good enough for a brother of mine. Perhaps you'll have better luck out here in the wider world."
"I believe it is time to march," Xander made a quick escape, "Are you coming?"
Camilla smirked, having won this round, "On my way."
The battle was not going in the favor of the Hoshidans. Somehow, it seemed that the Nohrians had anticipated their entire battle plan as if they had read it outright. As such, casualties were starting to mount, especially in Kamui's area of the conflict.
"Brad!" Kamui yelled, "We have wounded over here!"
"Working on it!" Despite suffering from a weak constitution, the mysterious man proved to be their most effective battlefield medic. He handled himself like an old pro. Like he had been through this before.
Caeda was also a master at defense. With her on duty, casualties were much lower than they could have been. She was not acting too offensively, but she was saving lives so Kamui let her work.
And through it all, Kamui kept his eyes out for his sister. If she was in this battle, he wanted to protect her and bring her home. Finding her was the issue though. Fortunately, he would not have to find her, she found him.
"You," She landed in front of him after he narrowly backed away from the downward swing, "So, you're leading this front. Sorry, but I have orders to take you out."
"You don't know what you're doing," Kamui growled, "Look at this slaughter! Can't you see that they're the bad guys?"
"Enough!" Corrin shouted, "I"m tired of your delusions! I don't want to hurt you, but if I have to, then I will. I'm not going with you, so you can forget it."
"Fine," Kamui brandished the Yato and reared back, his stare deathly, "Just remember, this is for your own good."
Kamui was skilled, but so was Corrin. Both fueled by their dragon blood, they were stronger than an average human, but Kamui was naturally stronger still. That was nothing new for Corrin, however, so she fought smarter, using Kamui's strength against him. While he was skilled enough to keep her at bay, he could not break her defenses.
This led Kamui to get sloppy. He was prone to anger, and his draconic blood continued to boil thinking of all the injustices he, his family, and his nation had endured. Of everything he had lost, and here he was staring one of those losses in the eyes as she fiercely fought him to a stand still.
They each had their elite fighters squaring off. Kaze and Rinkah fought with everything they had. Though, they both had some that were fighting half heartedly, not that their unenthused efforts were not as good as the others' full efforts.
The end result was that Kamui wore himself out. He did everything he could to best his sister to drag her back if he had too, but she kept herself reserved while he went all out. In the end, this let Corrin disarm him by knocking the Yato into the air where she caught it before him. To his surprise and horror, she was able to wield it just fine.
"No…Yato chose me," He glared, "You can't take that too!"
Corrin looked at him bizarrely yet with pity, "You need help. Surrender, please."
"Never!" Kamui's teeth sharpened and Corrin stepped back. On the verge of having to deal with an unstable dragon, a cheering from the Hoshidan side drew their attention. They both turned to find the source of the commotion.
Prince Ryoma had arrived on the scene to help turn the tides of their seeming defeat. While not enough to completely turn the tide, he did help keep them from being completely routed. Even the Nohrians seemed surprised by just how hard they were able to push back.
"Still not enough," Kamui murmured, "What will it take to rid this world of these infernal Nohrians!"
"Calm down!" Corrin shouted as she leapt in to knock him out, but he sidestepped it without looking.
"Fine! Fine," His rage was replaced with an eerie calm, "First Azura…now you…maybe Takumi was right. If they can corrupt you after all…maybe they could get her too. I'm sorry, I failed you."
Corrin backed up, wary of the seemingly insane man, "I'm sorry. I don't know who you think I am, but I am sorry."
Using the Yato and her own blade, she tried one last time to get this clearly unstable man to either surrender or retreat. She would get neither. Instead, he roared and charged her as he shifted into a frightening form. Corrin found herself pinned underneath a dragon before she could even respond.
He reared his long neck back, teeth showing as water started to accumulate in his maw in a magical swirl. Moments before he could discharge, he was struck by a bolt of lightning from the side, knocking him off the princess.
Odin struck a pose with his hand crackling with electricity. He was backed up with a barrage of arrows from the blonde archer though none of the shots seemed intended to kill. They did, however, force the dragon back. An action reflected in those of the Hoshidans altogether as they were forced to retreat even as Xander and Ryoma fought to a standstill.
"How?" Ryoma grimaced, "How could you predict our movements so perfectly?"
"Do not blame your tactical failures on me. This battle is lost. Admit as much and save what's left of your troops."
The Hoshidan prince scowled, "All troops fall back and reform our lines!"
Given a brief moment of respite, Xander sighed. He was relieved they were able to push them back. His brother, however, watched from further down the line. He knew that went too well. It had to be that letter with his father's seal, most likely penned by Iago. He was not this smart though.
There had to be a spy. A fairly high level one.
A/N: Apologies for the exceptional delay. I got promoted at work, and that means less down time there to work on it.
Chapter 16: Chapter 15
Chapter Text
"Too late," Robin glared at the aftermath of the battle. Bodies were strewn about. Mostly young men who died too soon for this farce of a war. Sons and maybe some fathers that would never return. He had seen this all before, and despite not being in charge, it was all the worse knowing how pointless this fight was.
"I should return to Hoshido," Azura declared, turning away from the devestation, "I'm sure that the royals aren't in on this. I may be able to get them to see reason. The Nohrians would be a harder sell though."
"You would walk back after Reflet tried to have you killed?" Lucina asked in bewilderment.
"They've been tricked. If I can just speak with Ryoma…"
"Reflet won't make it easy for you," Robin turned away from the killing field, "She'll know we survived by the time you make it there. Needless to say, you won't be allowed to just walk right in."
"Then what would you suggest?"
Robin thought for a moment, "We may know a few people. If we can find them, they could pass on a message or maybe even get you inside."
"Where would these contacts be?"
"That…is the problematic part."
"So, this is the Yato," Xander inspected the blade on the table, "Legend has it, that it is a sister weapon to my weapon. How it ended up in Hoshido, I have no idea, but I'm glad you were able to recover it. I can think of no better home."
"It would be an honor," Corrin eyed the blade, "But…the man who had it. He seems to truly believe we're twins. He had such conviction…I almost believe him."
Xander, Camilla and Leo all looked uncomfortable. Xander was the one that sighed first, "Corrin, at this rate you may find out eventually."
"Xander…" Camilla objected, but was quickly cut off.
"She should know."
"Know what?" Corrin looked between her brother and sister anxiously.
"Not that I question your judgment," Leo spoke up diplomatically, "But is the best place to have this conversation?"
"Perhaps you are right. Leo, sequester us somewhere more private in a nearby town. This still needs to be said."
"Will do," Leo nodded and left the tent, but it was clear Camilla wanted to speak with the crown prince.
"Take good care of that blade in the meantime. We'll talk soon."
"Alright," Corrin reluctantly took the legendary blade and made her way out leaving Xander alone with the elder princess.
"Before you start, I know what you're going to say, but we don't have the luxury of secrecy any longer. We did not anticipate this. She deserves to know."
His sister glared back at him, "And what if she decides to go with them?"
"I have more faith in our sister than that," Xander responded resolutely, "Regardless of where she came from, she is our sister. She is a princess of Nohr. That won't change, but better we come clean about actions we could not control sooner rather than later."
"I hope you're right, Xander. I'm not letting anyone break up my family. No one."
Xander watched her leave stoically, only barely whispering out after she was gone, "So do I."
"They survived," Reflet looked away. She was not surprised. In fact, she would hope her brother could make it through a measly assassination attempt, but the royals surviving was disappointing.
"And what plan do you have to rectify this situation?" The shrill voice called from the opaque circle of dark magic. Reflet responded with annoyance.
"Don't you worry your inferior little head. I've got a plan."
"And do you care to let your allies in on the plan?"
"Mmm, no," Reflet cut off his protests with a wave of her hand, dispelling the dark magic. He was insignificant anyways. If he survived this war, Reflet…well, she would not be that surprised really. Weasels had a way of surviving after all.
She sighed and worked to make sure her annoyance did not show. Having to report to such a useless excuse for a tactician already grated on her, but she would admit it was a decent way to make sure they coordinated.
This was not how she planned it, but she could make this work so long as she played the royals well enough. Azura being a traitor was a tough sell, but if anyone could do it, she could.
Speaking of which, they were due to arrive any minute now. She was hoping to be down one or two of them by this point, but she already had a few scapegoats for potential leaks if it came to it. For now, she put on her best fake concerned expression and went to meet them.
Ryoma was, surprisingly, at the forefront of their formations. It seemed he had returned from whatever mission he had undertaken, and he had a few Nohrians with him. Interesting.
"Milord," Reflet took a knee, "You've returned to us. With some added forces it seems."
"Yes, rebels from Nohr forced to retreat after the Prince discovered them. More pressing, however, Nohr seemed to know our plans ahead of time. They were ready for us. I believe we may have a leak."
"Yes, about that," Reflet's face grew grave, "I believe I have found those leaks. However…one of them…"
"What? Speak."
"It seems you have not been told. Azura may be related to these leaks. In fact, several documents were found after her reported death that indicate she has been conspiring against us for some time, harboring bitterness toward her captors."
"Azura? No, she thought of us as family."
"I have the documentation, Milord. I'm afraid that she is a traitor. It seems she may be associated with those dangerous rogues that Prince Kamui had run in with. Potentially faking her death intentionally. I also regret to inform you that she has taken Princess Sakura hostage."
"Hostage!?" Ryoma clenched his fists in anger before reining it in, if just barely. "Not here. Let us go somewhere more private."
Reflet obliged and let him to her office where she laid out all of the evidence she had drummed up. She eyed him up as he studied her documentation. He was one of the few people here she was not completely sure she could kill in an outright confrontation. Not yet, anyway. That made him a threat if things did not go to plan, and she definitely did not want to let her brother get to him.
"I can't believe this," Ryoma fell into the chair across from Reflet's, "But…it all looks real. To think that she held such resentment. Still, I would like to have these documents checked for authenticity in case someone is trying to frame her."
"Be my guess," Reflet gestured to the pile, "What will we do about this?"
"If true…then rescuing Sakura is our top priority. It seems Subaki and Hana have also gone missing. Likely in a rescue attempt."
"Perhaps Prince Kamui's team would be best suited for such a mission. He seems to be getting adept at moving quickly and quietly."
"You might be right, but I'm not sure that he's in a good headspace after our last battle. He's been…distant."
"Then perhaps he needs to keep himself busy."
"Perhaps. I'll take it under advisement." Ryoma stood and bowed, "Thank you, Kanpaku. I was concerned when Yukimura passed so unexpectedly, but you have proven your worth in succeeding him."
Reflet smiled, keeping the tips of her mouth from rising too much to show how pleased she was with herself, "It is a great honor to hear you say that. I will continue to endeavor to honor the memory of my predecessor."
"I am sure you will. For now, we must rest and take counsel. I trust you will be there?"
"I would not miss it."
Kent as he had taken to calling himself here, was reading a scroll, seemingly enjoying the good weather. He was intrigued by the interesting method of writing things down. For that matter, he was intrigued how Hoshido and Nohr could be so different while literally neighboring each other. He suspected meddling, but could not prove it.
He was still awaiting a report from his compatriots, but even before the war, they were hardly as punctual as he. He knew better than to worry though. Few could fight as well as they.
"Punctual as always, I see."
The, for the time, redhead lowered the scroll to see his liege and her husband standing across from him along with a few new faces. This made him smile slightly.
"And here I thought only the prince had a talent for finding allies wherever he went."
"Chrom was a bad influence I guess," Robin smirked for a moment, "These are…special guests from Hoshido. We're bringing them aboard to our cause."
Azura stepped up, "Hello, I am-"
"Princess Azura, formerly of Nohr."
"How did you…"
"We know quite a bit. And you must be Princess Sakura."
"A-a pleasure," The youngest princess of Hoshido stammered.
Kent then looked over to Lucina, "I do not imagine that this is a social call."
"No," Lucina shook her head, "We were hoping to speak with the Hoshidan royals, but we aren't exactly going to be welcomed. It seems someone…hostile has embedded herself high up in their government. I believe her title is 'Kanpaku.'"
"I see," Kent rolled the scroll up, "So you want me to set up an appointment. I'll see what I can do."
"I would appreciate it," Lucina beamed.
"Its the least I can do after all you did for us," Kent stood, picking up the scroll, "I must say, it is nice seeing you two together. Many of us wondered if you'd ever settle down."
"S-surely I wasn't that much of a lost cause." Despite her words, she turned red as she knew she very much was close to it.
He adjusted his glasses knowing he need not comment further on that part, "Still, I wish you did not have to fight again. We'll just have to redouble our efforts and hopefully end this quickly."
Lucina looked notably downcast, but Robin filed that away for later, "Yes. The sooner this war ends, the better."
Leo tapped his foot uncomfortably in the room they had rented at the closest town. The mood was tense for obvious reasons. Camilla stood firm next to the far wall, arms crossed and her glare towards Xander might have folded lesser men on the spot. Xander himself strove to pay her no mind as he stoically waited in front of the door.
Why did their Father's throne room seem like a more desirable place to be in that moment?
The only thing that broke Camilla's fierce glaring session was the sound of the door opening. The light from the hallway's lanterns ushered Corrin in who immediately knew something was off. She uncomfortably took her spot in front of her eldest brother.
"As you can no doubt tell, what we are about to discuss is a sensitive subject. I will not pretend nothing will change, but at this rate…I believe it is best you learn the truth from us. If nothing else, you are owed as much."
"You're worrying me, Xander," Corrin looked around cautiously. Camilla and Leo were no more reassuring. Camilla looked almost…afraid when their eyes met while Leo maintained a hard scowl. Not at her, at everything. As if the room itself had offended him.
"My apologies. Perhaps it's best that we cut straight to the point. What I am about to tell you, you must never speak of outside of this room."
"I'll keep it secret, I promise. What's going on here?"
"Corrin…when Elise was just a baby, there was a supposed peace conference. Father attended. So did King Sumeragi of Hoshido. From what we know, the Hoshidan delegation attacked him, and while he survived, Sumeragi did not. So, Father took the child that the Hoshdian king had brought with him."
Corrin swallowed as Xander finished, "He took you and brought you to Castle Krakenburg to be raised as a Nohrian princess. However, after Hoshidans kidnapped one of our sisters…you were moved to the Northern Fortress for further protection."
"I-I'm Hoshidan?" Corrin blinked, trying to process everything, "And you all knew?"
"Father swore us to secrecy," Leo mumbled, looking away, "Merely telling you could be considered treason. Elise also doesn't know."
"You are not defined by where you come from," Camilla interjected finally, "You are our sister, and nothing can change that."
"So…he really is my brother…"
"It would seem so," Xander nodded, "We know who the Hoshidan royals are, but we did not know he was your twin."
"And what about this other princess? What happened to her?"
"We don't know," Xander lamented, "Any attempts to recover her were met with failure. Not that there was much political will to rescue her." The crown prince clenched his fists, "Besides my mother, her mother was Father's favorite, so the other mothers detested her. I'm sorry, there wasn't anything we could do at the time."
"I…this is a lot to take in. I…I need to think."
"Of course," Xander nodded, "Take all the time you need."
"We're here if you need us," Camilla added quickly.
"Thanks," Corrin replied halfheartedly before making a quick exit.
"I hope you're happy, Xander," Camilla huffed as she made her own escape leaving Xander to sigh.
"For what it's worth," Leo walked up beside his older brother, "Better she find out this way than, well, anyone else. We just have to hope she understands the impossible situation we're in."
"Yes," The crown prince scowled, "Life is not fair. We simply must play the hands we are dealt. I just hope she sees that."
Chapter 17: Chapter 16
Chapter Text
The next day, the Nohrian siblings were uncertain as to what would await them in that morning's briefing. Xander busied himself with going over the same reports he had already reviewed several times. Camilla waited with baited breath while Leo absently sharpened his backup sword.
Given their anxious states, the surprise was palpable when Corrin strutted in like nothing was wrong and greeted them with a smile.
"Corrin!" Camilla was on her feet immediately, "How are you doing?"
"I…was up late last night," She admitted, "But I realized that you are still my family, and you weren't responsible for what happened. I don't want anything bad to happen to my birth family, but I cannot abandon you all. So, I'll do everything I can to bring this war to an end."
"A measured and mature response," Xander smiled proudly, "I'm glad to hear it. Though, there may come a time when a confrontation with the Hoshidan royals is inevitable."
"I know, but I hope it won't come to it. However, I've been thinking…what of Father? This reflects poorly on him to say the least. He lied to me, took me from Hoshido…can we really trust what he says?"
Leo's expression darkened with a twinge of doubt while Camilla's hardened with concern. However, it was Xander who answered her.
"King Garon has made decisions we all disagree with. Some of them morally dubious at best, but he is still the king and seemed to have Nohr's best interests at heart. He…was never quite the same after the Concubine War. I suppose you should know the truth of that as well."
The siblings all grew uncomfortable. Camilla looked uncharacteristically disturbed. Almost afraid. It was an expression Corrin had never seen on her big sister before.
"My mother, Queen Katarina, was Father's first wife, and by all accounts he loved her dearly. Unfortunately…she passed away leaving him brokenhearted. It was during this time that he grew closer to Queen Arete."
"Not wanting to let a good crisis go to waste, Garon's other lovers started making moves," Camilla uttered without trying to hide her disgust, "They used us as pawns when not busy killing each other and the other children. We…we were the fortunate ones. Many were killed by a variety of means."
"As the son of the late queen, I was spared most of this," Xander added, "But some of the concubines did try to have their children cozy up to me to earn favor. I…lost both friends and imposters during this time."
"It was also during this time that most of our mothers forbade us from interacting with Azura, Arete's daughter," Leo chimed in with closed eyes as he recalled those days, "It seemed she had her before coming to Nohr, but as Garon's favorite, they could not be too directly harmed, though rumors of mistreatment abounded."
"Whatever happened to Queen Arete?"
"She was murdered," Xander sighed, "It is believed she was killed as a result of the strife. After that, Azura lost a lot of her protection. Perhaps it was a mercy in a way that she was taken away. None of us like what happened to her, and we would rescue her in a moment if we could, but…"
"No one would support a rescue mission back then," Camilla frowned at the memory, "And by now, few believe she's even still alive."
"I had no idea you had all been through so much…" Corrin was mortified, but most of all, she wanted to help them, "What ended all of this?"
"Some say it was Elise's birth," Leo stood and approached, running the sudden change in their father through his mind as he did so. All the while, that terrorist's words hung in his thoughts, "He seemingly came to his senses after that and put most of the troublesome concubines away. Though, he ended up quite…cold afterwards. It was a very sudden turn."
"That is true, but since then he has ushered in greater internal stability and put an end to the needless squabbling of his former lovers. His methods may be harsh, cruel even, but he has restored order at the very least. This alone has earned him extreme support among the nobility."
"It's for the best that you keep your head down," Camilla advised, "There's no sense in angering Father, and we have our own ways of dealing with his less than ideal commands."
"Besides," Leo changed the subject, "We still have a war to win. Family or not, Hoshido was still prodding at our borders. Whatever grievances they accuse us of, we know that much for a fact."
"I know," Corrin spoke softly, "And I can't ignore that either."
"Leo is right, of course," Xander nodded before addressing Corrin, "But I have a special mission for you. One that hopefully will not see you in direct combat with Hoshido if you'll accept it."
Corrin seemed surprised, but she would not turn down such an opportunity, "What is that?"
"Now that you are in possession of the Yato, I want you to seek out the Rainbow Sage. I have been there once myself, and I'm confident he knows something about your blade. Unlocking its powers could be useful to us. Take your strikeforce for protection and see what you can find out. Take Laslow with you too."
"I won't fail you!" Corrin saluted before running out to round up her entourage. Almost as soon as she left, Leo shook his head with a slight smirk.
"You don't want her to have to fight her siblings."
"The Yato is a blade of legend. We should learn all we can about it."
"When did you get so soft?"
Camilla snorted and Xander seemed affronted at the accusation, "I am not soft. I am tactical."
"Whatever you say, big brother," Camilla giggled as Xander silently scowled.
"This town is lovely," Lucina noted during a rare moment of downtime after spending the day helping with repair efforts. The damage was less than it could have been at least. It was sunny and bright as opposed to Nohr's overcast skies. The people were in general friendlier, and after Robin's display, they had relinquished their apprehensions about the pair for the most part.
"I'm sorry you have to see it under these circumstances," Robin apologized yet again for dragging her into this.
"I don't mind, really. It is a worthy cause. One more than worth some leisurely sightseeing."
Robin stared at her. She was not lying, and it was a worthy cause. Still, he was troubled by just how easily she accepted another life threatening mission. She had already left home with on this expedition, "Lucina, was everything going alright back home before we left?"
"Why would you think otherwise?" Lucina looked at him over her shoulder, trying not to look troubled. She failed miserably when it came to Robin. The tactician opened his mouth to respond, but was interrupted before he could get the words out.
"I'm afraid I have dire news," Kent walked up to the happy couple with Azura in tow. Both of their expressions corroborated his words, "It seems the castle has been locked up tight."
"It seems I too have been labeled a traitor. It's likely Reflet will have me and Sakura killed on sight so I never get to the royals."
"Getting in wouldn't be easy then, nor would it help our case to break in. We may have to catch them when they leave to fight."
"There is some potential good news," Kent added, "Our draconic friend thinks she has a lead regarding the draconic presence here. If you'd like to join her, she went to see someone called the…'Rainbow Sage.'"
"Colorful title, but if could help us deal with Anankos, he's worth talking to."
"I've heard of him," Azura noted, "He only speaks with those who pass his trial. King Sumeragi once visited him. As did King Garon and Prince Xander. At least, they claim they did."
"I trust Robin to be smart enough to manage any trial," Lucina voiced her support.
"I appreciate the vote of confidence," Robin nodded, "What will you all do while we go?"
"We need to talk with our siblings as soon as possible," Azura folded her arms, "We'll look for an opening."
"Sounds good, if not dangerous," Robin nodded to Kent, "Keep them safe."
"You have my word."
"Very well. It's been a while since we've seen…"
"Nagi."
"Huh, interesting," Robin noted before addressing his wife, "Anything else you want to do while we're here?"
"No, we should make haste."
"Right," Robin nodded his agreement, "Let's see what this sage can, or rather, will tell us."
Takumi walked with purpose through the familiar halls. He had walked this path hundreds of times before. It never carried this kind of magnitude, but he had been deemed the most suitable for the task ahead of him.
He saw Caeda and Brad standing outside the door, both looking uncomfortable. He did not have to ask why. Instead he walked past them. How many times he had walked in on his brother training, he could not count. However, he had never seen him like this.
His brother looked feral. More so than when he had actually turned into a dragon. Debris laid at his feet as his victims piled up. He had long run out of training dummies and instead attacked anything he could make into a target. Broken swords laid about the yard while some of the walls bore scars of his rage.
Stepping over one such discarded weapon, the prince dared to approach his brother.
"I think you've shown our practice equipment who's in charge enough for one day."
Kamui looked over his shoulder, breathing heavy and eyes dilated, but he did not attack. Takumi took that as a good sign and stepped closer.
"Wanna talk about it?"
"There's nothing to talk about," Despite his words, he was actually speaking at least, so Takumi pressed it.
"We both know that isn't true," Takumi grabbed his brother by the wrist to keep him from swinging. It took some effort, but thanks to the younger prince being exhausted, Takumi was able to keep his arm stayed.
"Let go…"
"No. For your own sake, no. You're angry, I get it, but you're not thinking clearly. I know you, and if you do something rash while you're like this, you'll never forgive yourself."
"What is there to forgive?" Kamui snarled darkly, "Those that would turn their backs on us? Use us? Pretend to care about us? Or do you mean the sister so brainwashed she'd rather help Nohr? They made their choice."
"Kamui, this isn't you. You've wanted nothing more than to bring Corrine home since she was taken, and you've trusted Azura since the day you were introduced."
"You were the one who didn't trust her, now you're telling me I should?"
"No, I," Takumi sighed, "I don't know! I don't trust her, but I also know that this isn't right. You're the naive, trusting one. The one who knew we'd make everything better. I…miss that brother."
"Well maybe he's gone," Kamui pulled his arm free finally before walking away.
"That's what I'm afraid of."
"Your Majesty," Iago knelt before his liege, "I have received word that Corrin has claimed the Yato for her own."
"So she has," Garon mused from atop the throne, "What does she intend to do with it?"
"That, I am not sure, but she and the people under her command have left in the direction of the Rainbow Sage."
"Hmm," Garon grumbled, "That could be troublesome."
"Should I send a task force?"
"Sending Vallite troops could tip our hand, and if the sage were to intervene with our invisible pawns, I'm not sure what might happen. What is the status of our other project? Do we have the numbers for an invasion force?"
"Yes, we should be able to mount a sizeable force."
"Good. Leave no survivors. It is time our little monster project made itself useful."
A/N: I almost canceled this story. I wasn't very pleased with it, and I even started working on my next story. However, I saw that there were still a decent amount of people enjoying it, so I determined to continue it. Maybe I can salvage it into something halfway decent.
Also, fun fact, I actually posted a chapter, at least on FF, only to find out I had proofed the wrong chapter.
Chapter 18: Chapter 17
Chapter Text
Corrin looked up at the staggering mountain with a shrine that looked absolutely tiny from this distance. Her heart sank and her feet preemptively ached thinking about having to climb that mountain. She did not want to make that trek if she could avoid it, so she found a local to ask about it.
"Excuse me, mister," She stopped an older looking gentleman who was carrying some water buckets, "We're here looking for the Rainbow Sage, does he really live at the top of this mountain?"
He greeted her with a polite smile, "So they say. He's a bit of a mysterious figure. If you really want to know, I suppose you'd have to climb up there. If you don't mind my asking though, what's a young lass such as yourself want with a crusty old sage anyway?"
"I really need to ask him about a particular sword. We're hoping he has some information."
"I see. Then I wish you luck on your journey. Let me know what you find!"
"I will!" Corrin grinned. Though, her expression fell when she turned around and saw the mountain again. With a sigh, she started walking.
"That is certainly a mountain alright," Robin whistled looking up at the peak. He could make out the structure fairly well despite the distance. It was fairly defendable, but then again, few things on the peaks of mountains were not. He was not sure whether to expect a fight or not, but at this point he was pretty much always prepared for one.
"Your observation is as sharp as ever," Lucina commented dryly as she focused more on the city around them. Robin, however, was stunned.
"Was that…a joke? Who are you, and what have you done with my beloved wife?"
"Er, sorry," She blushed adorably, "I've been told sarcasm is a good way to 'banter.' Did I take it too far?"
Robin let out a chuckle, "Not at all. I was just surprised. Had to make sure you didn't get replaced along the way."
"I would hope you would notice sooner."
Robin smirked, "Come on, we have a little miss dragon to find before we climb. She should be around here somewhere."
Reflet's office was dimly lit by the time Kamui answered her summons. He was late, but she expected as much. He was in a terrible state when he did finally arrive. All the better for her plan.
"Have a seat," She offered, but he merely glared at her, his unkempt bangs shadowing his face. The strategist sighed as she stood. "I take it you've heard the news then."
"That my supposed family was a traitor this whole time?"
"Yes, unfortunately," Reflet put on a grave mask, "I'm also not sure about the rest of the royals' willingness to do what needs to be done."
"What do you mean?" Kamui side eyed her as she walked over to a shelf, absently pretending to analyze some random text.
"For the sake of Hoshido, and even your family, I'm not sure if they could cut down the the traitors if it came down to it. It is unpleasant business, but at the same time, I lack the authority to do what needs be done."
"You mean kill her?" Kamui narrowed his eyes.
"I know that may sound drastic, but I assure you, after what I've seen, she deserves no less." Reflet continued as she circled Kamui like a predator to prey, "Her hatred of you in particular was palpable. Every day, listening to you hate her family. Why do you think she went to meet you on your operation? To help…or to assassinate you?"
"You think she was there to kill me?"
"You can read her diary and correspondence yourself. I trust that when the time comes, you'll make the right decision for Hoshido though."
"I…I won't let her hurt Hoshido or my family. If what you say is true…she's dead to me anyway."
"Why…did he have…to live…on the top…of a mountain?" Corrin wheezed as she walked up the steep mountain trail. Even some of the hardier members of her group were feeling the pain. Jakob did his best to keep up appearances, and Gunter rode atop his horse that he had repeatedly offered to Corrin who refused it to keep from looking weak in front of her troops.
Oddly enough, Leo's blonde retainer seemed just fine. He was strutting along just fine, almost happily. Even the archer that came with him was doing much better than she would have expected the spindly woman to manage.
"Hey, Jakob."
"Milady," The butler was trying not to let his exhaustion show.
"What do you know about Leo's retainers? They seem a bit…odd."
Jakob looked over at the mage who seemingly had better stamina than some front line soldiers, "To be honest, I don't know much. I haven't interacted with them much. I know both of them showed up somewhat out of the blue. They aren't unique in this matter. Xander and Camilla both have some rather mysterious retainers."
"They just let them have the jobs without knowing anything about them?"
"Odd as it may sound, they proved exceptionally capable at their jobs. I've heard stories that they are among the best soldiers in Nohr. Close to the royals it seems. They have supposedly proven themselves, but I remain cautious myself."
"I see," Without much thought, Corrin marched on over to the peppy blonde and his companion.
"Oi! To what do I owe this pleasure?" Odin bowed with a flourish.
"Oh, I just wanted to get to know you is all. You two are quite the mystery after all."
Odin laughed while Nicole looked nervous. Nothing that out of the ordinary, "We are simply soldiers doing our best. Even if we happen to be a bit more heroic than the average."
"Why don't you tell me a little bit about yourself? I'd love to hear about your pasts."
A certain darkness flitted across his face, but only for a moment, "Nothing worth repeating. I assure you though, I am quite dedicated to Nohr's prosperity."
"I hope so. Do you have any family? Any siblings, maybe?"
"Hah, no siblings. At least, I don't think so…" He stopped to think if his parents would have gotten around to starting a family yet, "Just my parents for now, though they are grand in their own rights."
"How long has it been since you saw them?"
"Hmm," The man thought for a bit, "It has been over a year since I last saw my great progenitors at this point."
"Maybe you should take some time off to go visit them."
The man laughed, "As much as I would like that, my job is not done. I still have a duty to fulfill here."
"And what about when your service is over?"
The blonde looked distant for a moment before responding, "I think I'd like to start a family of my own. Produce my own scions with a woman that can stand by my awesome might."
"Do you have anyone in mind?"
The blonde floundered a bit under the knowing gaze of the archer. He coughed, "Mayhaps."
Corrin was a bit confused by the exchange, but she did not think he bore any hostile intentions. He was still weird though.
"What about you?" Corrin shifted focus to the archer, "Do you have any aspirations?"
"M-me? No, not really. I just want to keep my friends safe."
"That's a noble goal in and of itself," Corrin smiled reassuringly, "I find my strongest motivation is often to keep my family safe."
"I hope you succeed," Nicole squeaked.
"Thanks! You too!" Corrin beamed before Gunter called her over to discuss taking a rest.
As she left, Nicole whispered, "She's nice."
"Yes," Odin nodded, "Too nice for war."
"Odin?"
"Never you mind, we'll keep her safe. She is, somehow, key to our struggles after all."
Robin tapped his foot while Lucina perused the local shops in search of their dragon friend. While he valued punctuality as a tactician, one would think that he would have gotten used to tardiness after working with the Shepherds.
"Look," Lucina nodded over to a shorter woman looking at some trinkets on a shelf. The slightest points of her ears could be seen through her hood. Robin could tell, it was her alright.
Walking up, Robin opened with some teasing to alleviate his annoyance, "Find something you like?"
"These relics look interesting, but I haven't settled on anything, thank you."
"Take your time. Seems like you don't have anything important to be doing."
"Thanks, I…wait a second," Turning on her heels, she blanched upon seeing an irritated Robin and bemused Lucina, "Oh, I, uh, wasn't expecting you two yet."
"Clearly," Robin tapped his foot while Lucina kept a more personable demeanor.
"It is good to see you again, Na-gi. Nagi, yes. How have you been?"
"This world has been quite interesting."
"Apparently," Robin muttered, "Have you had any luck looking into the deeper problems we have here?"
"Well, for starters, I'm pretty sure this Rainbow Sage guy is a dragon."
"Yeah, kinda figured," Robin raised his brow. He thought it was at minimum a 50/50 that he was a dragon.
"Have you been able to meet him?" Lucina asked a bit more helpfully.
"No, I don't think so, but I haven't been here all that long."
"No time like the present then," Robin looked up at the mountain, "Let's get walking."
"How did they even build this all the way up here?" Corrin asked in wonder as they finally arrived at the front gates of the shrine.
"Maybe it was magic?" Felicia suggested between wheezing breaths.
"Not an unreasonable assumption," Gunter took in the grand gates, "The sage is quite particular about who he grants an audience. Or, at least, so the stories go. I do not know what to expect."
"We don't have a choice. This is our mission, and if this sword can help end the war, then we have to do this."
"As you say, milady."
To Corrin's surprise, the doors opened as they approached, inviting them inside. The interior was quite bare. In fact, there were no decorations. The building almost seemed completely empty.
"So, you would meet with the Rainbow Sage?"
"Um…yes?" Corrin replied to the voice, "We have questions about the Yato."
"Ah, so the ancient blade has resurfaced. How interesting that it would end up in the hands of Nohr. However, if you wish to have your questions answered, you must pass my trial."
"I'll do whatever it takes!"
"Good, good! Then let the test begin!" Two doors opened up, one on the east and one on the west side of the far wall, "If you wish to lead this land to peace, show me how well you lead, and how capable your subordinates are. Split your forces and proceed through each gate. If both teams reach the innermost chamber, I will answer your questions as best I am able."
"What will you do, Milady?" Jakob asked as they were presented with the split.
"Gunter, I want you to lead the other team."
"As you wish," The old soldier bowed his head.
"I'll take Jakob, Felicia, and Odin. You take Charlotte, Nicole, and Benny. I'll see you on the other side."
"Be safe. I will not fail in my duty."
"I know you won't…but I'll race you!"
"Milady…"
"She's already gone," Nicole noted sheepishly, leading to the knight to let out a sigh.
"I am aware. We had best make haste ourselves. Follow me!"
"So, you think the Dawn and Dusk Dragons are dead…" Robin reiterated as they walked up the steep path making good time.
"That would be my guess. Dragons that strong I probably would have sensed at some point. It seems corroborated by what little I've been able to track down on them."
"What about Anankos? Have you felt him?"
"No…but we don't know he's a dragon for sure." Robin and Lucina both gave her a deadpan stare, "Okay, yeah, probably, but we don't know for sure. Just that our benefactor was."
"It is odd though," Lucina furrowed her brow as she trudged up the trail with good pace, "I've seen neither hide nor hare of Valla, but it clearly exists. It's not on any maps, but supposedly endangers both Nohr and Hoshido. This begs the question: Where is it?"
"I don't know, but maybe the Sage will."
"Guess we'll find out soon enough," Robin came to stop as he looked up at the large gate before them, "Let's go."
