Chapter 1: Prologue
Chapter Text
Clarion had been in labour for just over 36 hours now. Her body was exhausted and as each contraction came she'd let out a pained scream as she gripped onto tightly onto the sheets in her large bed. There were two healing talents in the room with her one at the end of the bed ready to deliver her baby and the other at the left side of her making sure she was all right and if she needed anything.
The labour had been awful; she never before had experienced this kind of pain. Queens of Pixie Hollow were born from fallen stars not by physical birth. It was rare for a baby to be born in pixie hollow but it had happened a few times before.
As another contraction his she pushed and screamed out in agony wishing that he was here with her. That she could hold his hand. That he'd whisper words of encouragement. That she could tell him he was going to be a father. But she couldn't. What they did was breaking the rules. Her own rule and she couldn't let anyone know what happened because of it. Not even him.
As she pushed one final time the clock struck midnight and fireworks were going off outside signaling the new year. There was a quick flash of blue light that entered the room through the window followed by a loud wail.
Clarion closed her eyes relieved it was finally over. She didn't know how long she was like that but when she opened her eyes she saw her newborn baby wrapped up in a leaf blanket with a little tuft of white hair on her head. The healing talent carefully placed the newborn into her arms before stepping back.
Clarion looked down at the little girl's sleeping face. She was small. Smaller than she was supposed to be but it was expected. She was premature; two months early. But she was already as strong as a baby carried to term was. Perhaps it was her being half star. She wouldn't know as this thing had never happened before in the history of Pixie Hollow as far as she was aware since no book had any information about it, not even in the royal archives.
As she gazed down at her daughter she couldn't help but notice all the features she had from her father. The white silky hair, the shape of her ears, the pale skin. Clarion wondered if she'd have his eyes as well.
Clarion sat there, her sleeping daughter in her arms as she admired her. The rise and fall of her little body as she breathed softly. The way she'd shift ever so slightly in the swaddle. She already loved her so much.
“Do you have a name for her, your highness?” Dahlia, the healing talent who delivered her baby asked.
Clarion closed her eyes a moment in thought then remembered something he said to her a long time ago something she laughed at back then.
“It means blue, like your eyes.” His voice echoed in her mind like a maelstrom.
“Azurine.” Clarion said softly. “Her name is Azurine.”

Clarion let out a sigh as she walked through the halls of the palace. She had just welcomed the newest arrival; Tinkerbell. She stopped in front of the door that had a large A on it with vines and flowers painted on it with a pixie dust embedded paint. She could hear small giggles of laughter on the other side and she smiled softly before opening the door.
The Queen was met with the sight of her two year old daughter Azurine sitting on the floor playing with wooden blocks as Salvia, a helping talent fairy who was Azurine’s babysitter of sorts sat there handing her blocks as the toddler demanded.
“Dat on!” Azurine demanded in her toddler language, pointing to a block. Salvia handed the princess the blue block with a large C on it. Azurine took the block and placed it on top of the tower she had created. Clarion continued to stand in the doorway watching her daughter for a moment.
Salvia handed Azuirne another block which she took. Then Azuirne turned around on her heel and took a few steps back before turning around and throwing the block at the tower with surprisingly accurate aim knocking it over and laughing maniacally.
“Okay that’s enough you.” Clarion said, gliding over to her daughter.
“Mama!!” Azurine exclaimed, running over to her and hugging her leg.
“Hello my little one.” She said softly, lifting up her daughter and kissing her forehead gently. “Has Azurine been good for you, Salvia?” Clarion asked, watching as Salvia cleaned up the blocks. She didn’t mind cleaning up after Azurine. She rather enjoyed it given she was a very.. particular person when it comes to organizing.
“Yes your majesty, she has been quite good for me this morning.”
“And has she eaten?”
“As per usual she had a cup of blueberries and a quarter of a honeycomb cake that she insisted I had the other three quarters of and would not leave the table until I did so.”
Clarion chuckled at her daughter's insistence.
“Is that so?” She asked looking down at Azurine who had her fingers in her mouth. “Hey, no fingers out of your mouth.” Clarion said gently prying the two year olds fingers out of her mouth.
“Why?” Azuirne asked tilting her head to the side.
“Because your hands have germs on them sweetheart and that could make you sick.” Clarion stated.
“No want sick.” Azuirne huffed.
“Then hands out of your mouth.” Clarion told her before turning to Salvia. “You may have the rest of the day off Salvia, Azurine will assist me with my duties for the rest of the day.”
“Thank you, your majesty.” Salvia said as she finished putting the blocks away before bowing and leaving.
“Okay you.” Clarion said, turning her full attention to her two year old. “Mommy has a meeting shortly and if you behave I might just let you pick out a treat from the baking talent fairies at the end of the day.”
“Otay mama!” Azurine exclaimed, snuggling into her mother. Clarion smiled down at her warmly brushing a strand of white hair from her face and away from her ocean blue eyes, that mirrored her own.
Clarion carried Azurine in her arms as she headed to the meeting room where she’d be meeting with the three seasonal ministers.
She entered the large room, the ministers already there waiting for their queen. Clarion smiled greeting them before she placed Azurine down in the corner with her bean bag she sat on and a juice pouch.
~~
The meeting was adjourned roughly an hour later the ministers filtered out of the room and Azurine was laying face down on the cold hard floor in a sort of planking position clarion was not phased by this as Azurine did this a lot her small blue wings fluttering slightly as they were folded behind her in their normal position.
“Azurine honey, the meeting is over now.”
No response.
“Of course you’re asleep.” Clarion said with a slight roll of her eyes lifting up the sleeping child and practically slinging the limp child over her shoulder.
“What am I going to do with you?”
Chapter 3: 2
Chapter Text
Azuirne’s eyes fluttered open and she noticed that she was being carried in her mothers arms. She just watched as the ground below them moved by changing from bright greens of the Pixie Dust tree to soft pinks as they passed through Spring Valley. She could smell the Azaleas, Lilies, dahlias and other spring flowers as she and her mother flew over them.
“Mama.” The two year old mumbled still half asleep.
“Yes, my little starling?” Clarion replied
“Where goin?”
“We’re going to Summer Glade to check on a few things and then I thought you and I could pick some blueberries since I know just how much you love them.” Clarion said with a soft smile.
Azurine’s face lit up at the mention of blueberries. “Blooberries!!!” She exclaimed all her sleepiness had seemingly disappeared in an instant. Clarion chuckled at her daughter's enthusiasm.
“Oh where’d my sleepy little munchkin go? She was here just a moment ago!” Clarion said with a chuckle.
“Blooberries!!!” Azurine stated a determined expression on her little face.
“Haha yes blueberries.” Clarion said with an amused smile. “Maybe we could make blueberry muffins together.” She suggested.
“Nyeah!!…” Azurine hesitated before she glared up at her for a moment then responded. “But mama can’t cook.” She stated bluntly.
Clarion let out a fake offended gasp and covered her heart. “Oh how could you! My own child; calling me out like this! How will I ever recover!?”
Azuirne giggled, kicking her legs at her mothers display of dramatics as they had reached summer. “You otay! You oldest!” Azurine said with a big smile on her face.
“Oh the hurt! My own daughter, calling me old.” She said still in that faux dramatic tone as she descended towards the ground
“But you oldest fairy!”
“I’m only three hundred and ninety eight. I’m hardly that old.” Clarion stated.
Azurine looked down at her fingers trying to count how much that was a look of pure concentration on her face. “Wow… that a lot of fingers.” She said in amazement unable to comprehend just how much three hundred ninety eight really was.
“Yes. It is.” Clarion hummed as they made it to where she was headed. “Now you stay right here and do not move from that spot all right? Mommy will be right back.” She said, setting Azurine down on a mossy rock. “If you do not behave then no blueberries understand.” Clarion said firm but loving.
“Yes mama.” Azurine said, sitting there kicking her legs back and forth.
~~~
Clarion emerged fifteen minutes later, seeing that Azurine was still sitting where she had left her, only she was sitting on the ground instead of the rock. Clarion noticed Azurine holding something in her little hands and crouched down being careful not to get herself dirty as she spoke.
“What do you have there, my little starling?” She asked softly.
“Sparkle rock.” Azurine stated as she continued to stare at the blue stone.
“Ahh I see. A sparkle rock indeed.” Clarion said admiring the gem in her daughter's hand. “Where did you find that?” She asked softly.
Azuirne pointed to the spot where she found the sparkle rock on the ground.
“Aah I see.” She hummed, lifting Azurine up into her arms. “Shall we go pick some blueberries now?”
“Nyeah!!” Azurine exclaimed.
Clarion chuckled softly as she set off towards the fairy berry fields where the garden fairies had specially grown fruits and veggies to a size for fairies to cultivate and use in all sorts of things like baking, cooking and in the princess’s case eating blueberries by the handful.
Once they arrived they could see many fairies laughing and talking as they picked berries, played or just chatted with one another. Clarion smiled softly, always loving how her subjects interacted with each other. Azurine however was more focused on the blueberry bushes, her mouth practically watering as she stared at the rows and rows of blueberries just sitting there waiting for her to pick them.
The two year old determinedly tried her hardest to get out of her mothers strong grasp.
“Azurine no. We need a basket first sweetheart.” Clarion said holding her squirming child.
Azuirne huffed and went limp in her mothers arms almost like a cat. She walked over to one of the garden fairies named Tulip and asked for a small basket which she happily turned around to grab for the Queen.
“Thank you Tulip.” Clarion said with a soft smile.
“Of course your majesty.” Tulip replied happily as she handed Clarion the basket.
Clarion then set down Azuirne who immediately ran over towards the blueberries picking them off the branches and shoving them into her little mouth.
Clarion chuckled, shaking her head as she called out. “Azurine save, some of those for the basket.”
Azurine however was far too engrossed in her blueberry munching that she did not hear a word her mother said to her.
Clarion sighed, rolling her eyes as she fluttered over to Azurine holding the basket in her hands.
“Azurine.” Clarion said, placing her hand on her shoulder. Azuirne turned around her face and hands covered in blueberries and blueberry juice. “Oh… Azurine…” She said, shaking her head with a sigh. Clarion grabbed out some wipes from her bag she kept with her and began wiping Azurine’s face and hands.
“You always make quite the mess when you eat blueberries don’t you.” Clarion said, slightly amused. Once the two year old was as clean as she could be, the two of them started to pick berries and put them into the berry basket.
Azurine would run off, pick a bunch of berries and run back to her mother placing the ones she picked into the basket until it was full.
“Well Azurine. Should we head back home?” Clarion asked as she lifted Azurine into her arms.
“Um… Yes. Home.” Azuirne said with a nod.
Clarion chuckled, pressing a soft kiss to Azurine’s forehead before taking off in the air. towards the Pixie Dust Tree.
Chapter 4: Chapter 3
Summary:
Aftermath of the Queen’s review
Chapter Text
A few days had passed it was the evening and fairies were flitting about the pixie dust tree preparing for spring.
Azurine was with her Auntie Mary as the toddler often put it while Clarion was busy with her duties and the preparations for spring.
The two year old was sitting in the workshop of tinker’s nook; a juice pouch in her hand, watching as Fairy Mary was arranging things, putting things where they needed to be and fixing up a few gadgets of hers that were needing repairs.
After a couple minutes Azurine had gotten bored and had gotten up from her seat and toddled over to Mary.
“Auntie Mawy?” She asked in her little voice.
Mary turned around and looked down at the small princess with a loving smile. “Yes, little one?” She asked landing on the ground and kneeling down so she could be eye level with Azurine.
“Um… You play with me?” She asked with a pleading look in her eyes.
“Oh I’m sorry lil’ one. But I’ve got work to do.” Mary said gently brushing a lock of Azurine's hair behind her pointed ear. “I do have some materials you could use if you’d like to make somethin’.” She gestured to a bin of twigs, twine and a variety of other things like leaves and flower petals.
“Oh yes pwease!” Azurine exclaimed happily, her small blue wings flapping with excitement. The little girl climbed back onto her little mushroom high stool and sat at the table waiting for the basket.
Fairy Mary smiled softly as she set the basket of materials down on the table for the two year old to craft with.
“Here you are, lil’ lady.” Mary said softly, watching for a moment as the two year old grabbed twigs and sorted them by size by putting them in a line on the table. “Ya havin’ there?” She asked.
“Uhuh.” Azurine nodded, not looking up from what she was doing. She was an odd child not just because she was half a star or that she had silvery white hair and pale skin for a warm fairy but because of the way she acted. She was chaotic most of the time, yes, but she also enjoyed sorting things by colour, size, shape, anything her little mind could think of before she were to create something out of it.
After a few minutes a blonde fairy flew into the workshop and sat down at a table slumping down and slamming her head onto it with a thud before groaning.
“Back so soon?” Fairy Mary asked as she was putting a basket she was holding on a nearby shelf.
“You didn’t go?” The blonde asked looking up at Mary.
“Oh goodness, no. Far too much work to do here, besides someone’s gotta watch this little one while the Queen’s busy.” She gestured to Azurine who was still sorting the objects in front of her.
“Who’s that?” The blonde asked as she fluttered over to the young princess to see what she was doing.
“Oh I suppose you wouldn’t have met the young princess yet given she hasn’t been out in a large public setting for a bit, isn’t that right little one.” Fairy Mary said as she ruffled Azurine’s hair before grabbing another basket and putting it on the same shelf. “She’s Queen Clarion’s daughter; Azurine.”
“Oh, well it’s nice to meet you, Azurine.” The blonde said, reaching a hand out in front of the child’s face to shake her hand.
“Tinkerbell I wouldn’t do that, she bi-“ Fairy Mary tried warning Tinkerbell but it was too late.
Azurine without a second thought sunk her little teeth into Tink's outstretched hand causing her to flinch and take her hand back swiftly.
“Bites…” Mary finished.
“I can see that.” Tinkerbell scowled, giving the young princess a stink eye as she sat back at her table and grasped at her sore hand.
“Sorry ‘bout that, Clarion’s trying but this lil’ hasn’t quite learned yet that biting hurts and isn’t okay.” Mary said as she scolded Azurine.
“It’s fine…” Tink grumbled as she slammed her head back down on the table before adding under her breath. “Vidia was right. Being a tinker stinks.”
Mary’s ears perked up and she turned her attention back to Tinkerbell. “Excuse me?”
Tink subtly slammed her fist down before sitting back up and looking at Mary. “It’s just, why don’t we get to go to the mainland?
Fairy Mary chuckled softly before fluttering over to Tinkerbell with her hands on her hips, the gesture causing Azurine to turn her head towards the two ‘older’ fairies “The Mainland? Who gives a pile of pebbles about the mainland?” She asked rhetorically.
“But Fairy Mary the other fairies get to go.” Tinkerbell replied.
Mary shook her head before speaking once more. “Now Tinkerbell, are you a garden fairy?”
“Well no..” She replied
“Light fairy? Animal fairy? Water fairy perhaps?” Mary asked a hint of a slight taunt in her tone.
“No and no.” Tink replied.
“She a gween faiwy!” Azurine exclaimed, unable to say her r’s properly.
Mary chuckled, shaking her head at the little princess's words before speaking once more. “No, you’re not. You are a tinker.” Fairy Mary said, lifting Tinkerbell’s chin to look at her. “Be proud of it.”
Mary laughed as she flew over to the two year old helping her clean up the neatly sorted objects. “The day you can magically make the flowers grow or capture the rays of the sun, then you can go. Until then your work is here.”
Mary stated as she picked Azurine up. “Allrighty little one, let’s get you back to your mother.” She said as she flew off with the young princess in her arms.
~~~
Clarion was sitting in her vanity, her hands folded neatly in her lap as Primrose; one of her personal helpers carefully took her hair out of its simple yet elegant bun.
“Thank you, Prim.” She said softly letting out a sigh as her long and wavy dark golden brown hair fell onto her shoulders and down her back.
Primrose reached for the hair comb holding it in her hand as she readied to brush the Queen’s hair only for Clarion to hold her hand up which made Prim pause.
“I would like to comb my own hair tonight if that’s all right?” Clarion asked, looking at primrose through the mirror.
“Of course your majesty.” Primrose replied, giving the Queen a gentle smile of her own as she set the comb back onto the vanity. “Is there anything you may need of me before I am done for the night?”
“No, I’m all right but thank you, have a wonderful rest of your night Prim, and thank you.” She said still with the same smile on her face.
Primrose gave Clarion a curtsy before speaking. “Of course your majesty.” She then fluttered out of the Queen’s chambers leaving the door open as per her usual request.
Once she was sure Primrose was gone Clarion let out a sigh and ran her fingers through her hair as she held her head. She closed her eyes furrowing her eyebrows as she thought of the little ‘stunt’ Tinkerbell had pulled over an hour ago. She hated when she had to disappoint her subjects, she saw each and every one of them as her children and she saw so much of herself and an old friend of hers in Tinkerbell. The way she was curious and inventive, the way she was head strong and stubborn.
She opened her eyes once more and her gaze landed on the small wooden talisman on the vanity. It was a snowy owl, one that he had carved for her all those centuries ago. A single tear slipped down her cheek as she thought about him. His warm grey eyes, his pale skin and the white hair that felt like silk as she ran her fingers through the strands.
Azurine’s hair was like that too. The two year old was so much like her father and that thought only hurt the Queen more.
“Aye thought you’d be in here.” Fairy Mary said as she stood at the doorway to
Clarion's bedroom, the two year old sleeping in her arms. “How’d it go?”
“Oh you know how it goes, I show up I give everyone a pep talk of sorts, make sure everything is running smoothly and that we’re on schedule to bring in spring.” She said as she combed her hair. “All though this year was interesting to say the least.”
“Oh? I assume it has something to do with a certain tinker fairy?” Mary questioned as she gently laid Azurine onto Clarion’s bed for the time being before fluttering over to her friend.
“Yes Tinkerbell had some rather innovative intentions, they need a little tweaking but knowing how tinker fairies are it’ll be no issue for her.” Clarion said, chuckling slightly at the memory of the flower sprayer. “Poor hyacinth got berry paint all over him. I've never seen him look so upset before!” She snorted. “I know I shouldn’t laugh but he can be so nervous it’s nice to see the other sides of him, of all of my subjects.” She said before her smile dropped and she set her comb back down onto the vanity.
“Are you ever afraid that you’ve made the wrong decision? That even though you think it’s the right one…” Clarion trailed off trying to put her thoughts into words.
“Is this about Tinkerbell or something else entirely?” Mary asked, placing a hand on her friend's shoulder in a form of comfort.
“Yes and no. I hate disappointing my fairies, you know that, especially when they seem genuinely interested and excited about something as simple as going to the mainland.”
“Aah so that’s what Tinkerbell was talkin’ about earlier.” Mary said, taking her hand off Clarion's shoulder of which Ree’s ears perked up slightly.
“She talked to you,?” She asked, turning her head to look at Mary.
“She did indeed.” Fairy Mary stated.
“Did she say anything important? Or that I should know of?”
“Not really. She just went on about how the nature talents got to go while she was stuck here making pots and kettles. I don’t think she quite understands what being a tinker is, quite yet. Now if you’ll excuse me I must get going , plenty of things to do tomorrow to finish preparing for spring!” Mary said pointing a finger in the air.
“Thank you again for watching my daughter.” Clarion said softly as she turned her gaze to the sleeping child who was sprawled out like a starfish on her large bed.
“Of course, she was rather lovely company. I'd be happy to spend time with her more often when you need time to yourself.” Mary says, fluttering to the door. “Do try to get some sleep, you look exhausted, more so than usual.” She said before leaving the room.
Clarion let out a sigh looking at herself in the mirror of the vanity, grabbing a cloth and gently wiping her face of her makeup. She then looked at herself once more seeing all of her flaws; the scar on the bridge of her nose and the freckles dusted along her cheeks and nose.
“Mama..?” Azurine mumbled rubbing her eyes as she sat up on the bed.
“Yes, my little starling?” Clarion asked standing up and walking over to her daughter before scooping the little one up into her arms.
“I seep wit oou?” The two year old asked in her own way, looking up at her mother with tired eyes.
“Of course sweetheart. Let’s get you into some pajamas first.” Clarion said heading out of her bed chambers and down the hall to Azurine's bedroom.
“Let’s get you out of your day clothes.” Clarion hummed, setting the toddler down before helping her undress. Azurine wasn’t much help being far too tired to do anything but stand still and even that was a struggle.
“There we are.” She hummed before helping Azurine into her ducky onesie made of yellow sunflower petals, orange sunflower kettles stuffed with cotton for the beak and black thread embroidered into the perked for the eyes.
Azurine lifted her arms up, opening and closing her tiny fists indicating that she wanted up. Clarion smiled softly, picking her daughter up, holding her on her hip before making her way back to her bed chambers.
Clarion pulled back the covers placing Azurine onto the centre of the bed before tucking her in. Azurine then let out a big yawn and rubbed her eyes.
“Aww is my little duckling sleepy?” Clarion asked as she got her own sleep wear on, a simple night dress made of a simple ivory morning glory and a spider silk shawl.
“Uhuh.” Azurine mumbled yawning once more. “Mama…?”
“Yes Azurine?” Clarion asked as she crawled in bed next to her daughter, laying on her side so she could admire the little one.
“Oou simg?” Azurine asked, blinking one eye at a time.
“Of course my dearest, what song would you like?” She asked all though she already knew the answer.
“Favouite somg.” Azurine mumbled shuffling closer to her mother.
Clarion chuckled softly, placing a gentle kiss to Azurine’s forehead.
“Words are born into air
And quickly fade out in the wind
But they find their way inside you
Where they live on forevermore...
When skies are dark and full of rain
Look inside your heart
The light, so warm will and all aglow
Shining just like the sun.
You can see, just how much you've grown
How strong you are..
A love will open up to you
And it starts from the day that you,
first heard those words”
Clarion continued to hum softly, running her fingers up and down Azurine’s back between the base of her wings. Tears quietly spilled from her eyes, staining her pillow as memories filled her mind, both painful and happy. Of times when they were together, when she had little to worry about. When she could sneak off at sunset just to meet him. Oh how much she looks like him. From the silky white hair to the paler skin; even the way she acts is the same with that cheeky little smile.
Maybe one day they could meet, maybe one day they could be a happy family.
