Work Text:

Nixie nature was to enthrall humans to come into the water, where the creatures would devour their prey.

Yet a nixie was finding herself being tempted out of the water.

The human girl's voice was a siren song more powerful than her own - even amongst nixiekind, Lorelei's voice was unpleasant and her appearance ghastly. Except in the eyes and ears of this human, apparently.

She knew this human's name was Sylvia. That's the name that was always uttered when her friends would come back to pull her out of the water. At least two had tried to stab Lorelei with silver, but Sylvia had stopped them. For some reason, the girl was attached to this nixie.

Maybe for the same reason that Lorelei drove every other nixie out of this river whenever Sylvia was spotted. Why she would tow them away if they caught sight of Sylvia and began their enchanted singing. She hated the thought of another nixie pulling her under and spilling her blood. She tried to tell herself it was because of how desperately she wanted to be the one to do it.

And yet, the fluttering song of Sylvia's was drawing Lorelei to the shore. With her aquatic body, she could only go so far onto the ground before she'd be in trouble. But she felt whole-heartedly that if Sylvia gestured for her, she would hop all the way into the land and beach herself - she would be drawn into a city where every person around would try to stab, slash, and flay her. This self-awareness did nothing to make her stop.

Even if Sylvia's ultimate goal was to bait, trap, and even outright kill her... Lorelei would blissfully accept that fate, as long as she could hear that beautiful voice the entire time and keep up the staring match with those glossy eyes.

Notes:

I have no idea why, but I found myself struck with the need to write this short concept. I read A Dark and Drowning Tide last month and was enjoying it up until roughly the last third, with the ending outright making me pissed. I had really wanted to be into this book, but rated it far lower than what I was expecting. If I had enough energy for it, I'd be writing a fix-it rewrite, but I have too many other WIPs taking up the writing passion. Except for this one ficlet, I guess.

The timing is actually kind of funny. If you read it, you'd know the folklore creatures called "nixies" are a recurring aspect of the story. Well, I have this fanfic anthology series based on ColeyDoesThings' series of skits on popular fanfic tropes. One of the last holdouts for ideas was the Mermaid AU trope. And then I read this book and had nixies on the mind, but I just couldn't get anything else out of it. At the time, I wasn't interested in writing any fic for this book. A while later I read an old Genshin fic I had in my AO3 Marked For Later and it finally gave me an idea for a Mermaid AU oneshot for a different ship, yet all of a sudden I was struck with a separate inspiration: Lorelei as a nixie, ironically enraptured by the human Sylvia. Not a full oneshot, just a short piece. I decided that even tho I intended the other fic to be the official entry for my trope series, I might still write this as a bonus. And now I have.

Anyway, slightly related, but I'm kind of surprised I couldn't find a fandom tag for this book? Maybe because its too new? Thought it'd at least inspire a fix-it or a short sapphic fluff piece, if not maybe something about the other characters? Even though I didn't enjoy the book as much as I thought I would and downright felt betrayed by it, I think I would still read fics for it (especially nixie AUs like this; lowkey might write nixie!Sylvia as a sequel or Sylvia’s POV of this scenario if I get hit with another bug). One thing I still adore about it even now is the worldbuilding, and the whole cast of characters were loveable - even when they were frustrating and hateable, they were interesting to read, and in that regard were "loveable". And god that cover was gorgeous; I look at it and feel heartbroken I couldn't rate the story attached higher. And most of the romance development was entirely up my alley.

Sorry this A/N ended up as long or longer than the ficlet itself; I think besides the brief nixie!Lorelei idea, I also wanted a space to ramble.
