Work Text:
Chase walked down the middle of an empty, wet street. It was lined with a variety of small shops. A neon sign in front of one caught his eye. It advertised a pub.
“The Winchester? Kinda seems like a bar.” He pushed open the doors.
“Even this place is empty? I mean, I guess it’s more romantic this way. Oh, what’s this?” Chase walked towards a shiny metal jukebox. He had not comprehended what it truly was.
“Alexa, play ‘Lucky’ by Alastair.” Chase told the machine. He hoped to set the mood before Buddy came into the book. He had planned to surprise him for Valentine’s day.
“...”
“Alexa, play a Starbrigade song.” When he’s met with more silence, he banged the machine. It started to play “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen.
“Oh come on! Alexa, play Starbri—” He’s interrupted by the sound of a door being slammed in a nearby room and rushed footsteps. Buddy appeared and ran to Chase.
“Buddy, what’s wrong?”
“Shh!” Buddy put a hand over Chase’s mouth to shut him up. He got licked.
“Oh, you absolute brat!” Buddy growled in a hushed tone.
“Why are you trying to shut me up?” Muffled moans were heard right outside the windows.
“My God, of course you didn’t read the book!” Buddy walked over to the billiards table nearby and tossed Chase a cue stick.
“What am I supposed to do with this?”
“Since you can’t stay quiet, the zombies will be summoned, and one will be inside. We need to hit him with these to the tune of the song that’s playing.”
“You’ve got to be joking!” Before Buddy could retort, a slouched elderly man who wore broken glasses, and a blood stained shirt appeared before them. The chorus of the song started to play.
“Chase, now!” They whacked the senior citizen to the beat of the song. The lights followed suit, and blinked to the rhythm. Sometime during the chorus, a window was smashed nearby. Buddy made a break for a wall across the room.
“What are you doing?!” Chase yelled, still banging the grandpa into the ground.
“Give me two seconds!” Buddy fumbled for a fire extinguisher. Once found, he ran back to Chase and bashed the infected man against the head. He lifted the nozzle and sprayed him in the face, leaving the zombie iced. They stopped and stared at each other. Buddy dashed for the bar. Chase started hitting the man with the cue stick again.
“Now is not the time for a drink dude!” Instead of replying, Buddy snagged a stool and reached for a Winchester rifle.
“Here, grab this!” Chase barely had time to react, but he managed to drop the pole, and caught the gun.
“I don’t know how to shoot!” The zombie groaned and started tumbling towards Chase. All the memories of his old baseball days came flooding into him at once. Or rather, Field of Dreams and Sandlot flooded into his mind. He actually had no experience whatsoever. Despite that, he hit a home run, and the loud thump echoed throughout the bar. Grandpa flew straight into Alexa. As he was swiftly electrocuted, sparks littered the room. Buddy was impressed, but his words were stuck in his throat as he noticed the lights dancing like fireworks in those big brown eyes.
“Buddy, what now?”
“W-what….” The raven haired man coughed into his hand before finding his footing again. “W-we take a small break before escaping to your childhood home. There, you’ll confront your character’s dysfunctional father.” Despair washed over Chase’s face.
“What if…we just stayed here instead? It doesn’t seem so bad. Do the zombies ever come in here?”
“Well, no they don’t, but how would we end the story? It won’t progress past this point.”
“We wing it! It’s not like we haven’t done it in other stories. Before that though, I have an itty bitty favor.” Chase looked uncharacteristically shy.
“I’d have to know what the favor would be.”
“Can you change the song on that music thingy? Then I’ll show you what I have in mind.”
Buddy nodded and walked towards the jukebox. He pondered moving the zombie but it seemed that if he was moved, the machine would stop working. He pressed a button without touching the man. “What is This Feeling” from Wicked started up.
“No, no we’re passed that part.” Buddy pressed another button. This time, it played a slower song. He looked up at Chase who gave a nod of acceptance.
“Thank you….”
“You’re welcome, but what is this about, Chase?”
“Well…I tried to choose a…romantic book for today. One we could relax in. Even though I messed things up, I’d still like to try something…for Valentine’s day.”
“You mean to tell me this was all for Valentine’s day? You’ve got to be joking.”
“What, you don’t like it?”
“No, I’ve never celebrated. It seems like a simpleminded holiday for simpleminded fools.”
“Then I’m a simpleminded fool. One that’s hoping you’d indulge me in one thing, your majesty .”
“And what would that be, brat?”
“Lead me in a dance. I may have eight years of experience, but I still can’t lead a slow dance. Will you help me?” Buddy’s smirk fell as he blushed at the question.
“...”
“Buddy?” The music enveloped them. After a moment, Buddy sauntered across the room. Both ignored the moans right outside. They only heard the soft instrumentals, and the sound of each other’s breath as they got closer. Fireworks from the jukebox provided more ambience to the otherwise dim lit room. Buddy carefully took Chase’s hand in his. He guided the blonde into a slow dance.
As they swayed to the music, the songs changed a couple times before Chase laid his head on Buddy’s shoulder. Chase whispered something into it.
“Do you…are you having fun?”
“Yes, I am.” Buddy chuckled, leaning his cheek against soft blonde hair.
“I’m sorry this story wasn’t…what I thought it would be. I really did try to do something special for you.”
“You did do something special for me, however unconventional it was.” Chase lifted his head to look up into those bright blue eyes again. When he did, Buddy took the opportunity to twirl him then pulled him in for a dip. That surprised Chase, causing his hands to shoot up around Buddy’s neck, holding on for dear life. After staring at the floor, he looked at Buddy barely an inch from his face.
It felt like an eternity had passed without a word from either. Buddy realized what he was about to do, and lifted Chase back up.
“I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to—” He was grabbed by Chase and pulled close until they were once again an inch apart. Their eyes locked. Buddy felt a hand caress his cheek and down his jawline, stopping on his chin. They leaned into each other, warm breath falling from their lips until they met.
Unfortunately for them, the zombies weren’t waiting for their moment to be over. They surrounded the establishment, and proceeded to smash in all the pub’s windows. They piled on top of one another, trying to clammer inside for the taste of fresh meat.
The boys opened their eyes, and came back to reality. Without a moment to lose, Chase grabbed his bat—the Winchester rifle—and got to work. He was learning how to aim as Buddy handed him shell after shell. Their hearts were pounding, but not from fear.
