Summary:

when a new magical threat arrives in Gotham, all it's heroes gather to confront it despite their strained relationship with one another. however, despite their best efforts, tragedy strikes. And Bruce Wayne, surrounded by the bodies of his children, is given a chance to try again. with his dying breath he vows, he will do better, no matter what it takes, he will save them this time.

The concept of this fic is inspired by the webtoon "The S-Classes Raised" but does not require prior knowledge of it, this is my first time writing for these characters and I accept any constructive criticisms. will update the tags as I go

Chapter 1: System Update!

Chapter Text

"About time you showed up" Jason sneered as Bruce landed before his gaggle of children, though he isn't sure he still had the right to call them that after the months of radio silence and the explosive argument that led to it. He wanted to apologise, to let them know he hadn't meant any of the hurtful words he had shouted out in the heat of the moment but the words lodged themselves in his throat, dug into his windpipe, suffocating him, preventing him for even making a sound. but it didn't matter, it was probably too late to apologise anyway, and now wasn't the time; not when there was a new villain terrorising Gotham.

"So what's the rundown of the situation?" Tim asked, shuffling nervously nervously beside Steph, both looking like the wanted to be anywhere but here, and the thought of that made his stomach fill with lead. Bruce pushed aside the heaviness in felt and willed the words to come out of his mouth. "A new villain calling himself "The Architect" that I suspect possesses magical abilities has been kidnapping citizens through portals he calls "gates", and although he returns all the victims, most if not all come back severely injured and die shortly after returning, and those who have survived appear to be in a state of shock, likely suffering some form of PTSD, constantly murmuring of "monsters"" he states, recalling all the information he had managed to gather from the surviving patients and the little security footage he could recover.

"sounds simple enough, we've just got to take him out before he can drag us into one of these "gates" right?" Dick says, stretching in preparation for the fight. "Yes, but we need to be careful, afterall-" Bruce starts before he's cut off by a groan from Jason. "ugh yeah, yeah we get it, you don't trust us to handle ourselves but we'll be fine!" he yells throwing an arm around Tim who looks slightly more relaxed at the gesture, "we've all dealt with magical bullshit before, how hard could it be? matter of fact we probably don't even need you here to help us" he snarked, not so subtlety implying Bruce should leave. he notes how tense everyone stares at him following Jason's words, as if expecting him to blow and reprimand him for it. He clenches his teeth and ignores the twisting sensation flowing through him in favour of marching towards the warehouse that the villain was supposedly located according to Babs. "Be that as it may," he gritted, "it'll be safer and more efficient if we're all here, plus I'd like to find out personally what kinds of abilities he has" he said, hands clenched at his sides, he just wanted to go home, and have someone tell him he was doing good, that he wasn't messing everything up, that his family loved him.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Dick exclaimed, coming in front of him with a questioning look. "shouldn't we come up with a plan first before we go in?" he asked, raising an eyebrow at Bruce's unusual carelessness. Bruce blinked for a moment. how stupid. he was so caught up in his own pathetic insecurities he almost charged in unprepared at put everyone in danger, something he had yelled at them all previously for. what a hypocrite. his frown deepened as he pushed past Dick and continued towards the warehouse, "I'll go in first you guys wait for my signal to follow suit" he ordered, at least this way if something dangerous were to occur he would be able to take the brunt of it and allow his kids time to escape and come up with a better plan. which they undoubtedly would; they all far surpassed him who was too distracted by his own emotions to even come up with a plan. as he walked he didn't hear the way Steph scoffed at his 'plan', "typical, thinks he he can do everything without us" she mumbled while Damian gripped his katana tightly, "does father think we are incapable of handling ourselves against one simple villain?" he murmured, with dick putting a reassuring hand on his should and sending a harsh glare towards Bruce as they followed him in.

as soon as they entered the warehouse it was as though they had been transported to a different dimension, the walls lined with stone pillars that extended down into a hallway that seemed to absorb all light. it was clear something was wrong but as they turned to leave, the door suddenly slammed shut, and a thud was heard nearby. everyone drew their weapons in anticipation but gasped when they saw who it was. Babs, Alfred and duke were looking around in a puzzled, clearly not aware of what had happened. Steph and Cass rushed forward to help them up. "how did you get here?" Cass asked Babs after helping her back into her chair, her voice dripping with concern.

"Isn't it obvious? I brought them here!" a haunting voice echoed throughout the building. weapons drawn once more, the heroes turned towards the hallway as a cloaked figure floated out of the shadows. "Who are you and what do you want?" Bruce growled, standing protectively in front of his family. The cloaked figure's smile dropped for a moment before coming back twice as big, "who am I? why I'm the creator of this wonderful place of course! you may call me The Architect" The Architect exclaimed floating upside down to stand on the ceiling. "And as for what i want?" well that's simple" he stated, his head titling to the side uncannily as he stared down at them, "I want entertainment" he said ominously.

"The fuck does that mean!" Jason shouted, pointing his gun at him. The Architect tutted at his outburst, "So impatient" he said, floating back down, "I simply want to propose a game, a challenge, to those who feel they are worthy" he said plainly taking a step towards them causing them to tense. "what kind of game? and what do we get if we win?" Duke asked cautiously. it seemed to be the right thing to ask as The Architect's smile seemed to get impossibly wider. "I'm so glad you asked!" he exclaimed joyously, "all you have to do is make it all the way to the end of the hallway without dying and you win!" he explained, as if it was that simple, as if there were tens of people dead or dying because of this "game". "As for the prize I can't tell you afterall, it'll ruin the fun~" he said jokingly.

The heroes glanced between each other, having a silent debate amongst one another on whether they should trust his words, though it seemed as tough they didn't exactly have a choice in the matter. "alright, it seems as though we have no choice, we'll play your "game" Mr Architect" Alfred stated, standing tall despite the uncertainty in the air. The Architect cried out in joy, "How wonderful!" he said, suddenly appearing before Alfred causing everyone to raise their weapons. He quickly held up his hands in surrender, "Wait, Wait!" he shouted, "I just need to give an item to start!" he said, that twisted smile never leaving his face as he placed a glowing yellow capsule in Alfred's palm. "This is a 'Gate Stone'" he explained, "you only get one of these and whoever breaks it will be taken back to the real world" he explained floating back up and down the hallway. "Good luck heroes~ I look forward to seeing you at the end~" he sang as he disappeared into the darkness once more.

"Guess we should probably get going" Dick said, grabbing the Gate Stone off Alfred and beginning to head forward down the corridor, the others following suit with Bruce trying desperately to ignore the dread pooling in his gut.

after hours of fighting they had finally made it to the end, and now a towering stone door was all that stood in their way. "Finally!" Tim yelled, carefully cradling his broken arm. none of them were in good shape after the seemingly unending barrage of horrific monsters they had just fought through, but they were so close to beating whatever game The Architect had trapped them in they simply couldn't stop now. They slowly pushed open the door to reveal The Architect sitting upon a marble throne, smiling ecstatically at them.

"You made it! You actually made it!" He cried joyously, smile growing wider with every word, "No one's every made it to the end before! congratulations heroes you win!" he yelled standing up from his throne and applauding. "Yes we've won your ridiculous 'game', now what's our 'prize'?" Damian sneered putting pressure on a bleeding wound on his side. The Architect's smile became impossibly wider as his body began to morph, "rejoice heroes! your prize is a death by my hands!" he yelled as a blinding light exploded from him, dimming to reveal a ferocious dragon. with a single swipe of it's claws Alfred was thrown into a wall, slumping onto the ground as blood pooled around him. "Alfred!" They all yelled, dashing towards the monster, the desire for revenge erasing all exhaustion.

What followed was a one sided massacre, the dragon had released some kind of poison gas that was continually weakening them, they couldn't even land a single blow on it. only Bruce and Dick were left standing, but that wouldn't last long with their injuries and the all the gas they had breathed in. the dragon gave one last swipe of it's claws, it's talons flying out towards Bruce; with no way to doge, he closed his eyes prepared for the pain...except it never came. Instead he felt a weight wrap around him. He slowly opened his and gasped in horror as Dick slumped against him, the dragon's talons protruding from his back.

As it began rearing it's head for a breath attack, Bruce dragged him and dick behind a collapsed pillar. "Dick? Chum? talk to me please" he begged, cupping dick's face as he smiled sadly up him before pulling out the Gate Stone. "Here, take this" he whispered weakly, "I'm sorry i wasn't good enough to stay till the end but the world needs Batman a lot more than it needs Nightwing" he coughed, blood splattering onto himself and Bruce who could only watch as silent tears poured from his eyes. "But I need you chum, I can't live without you and the others, I'm sorry I failed you all" he sobbed, placing his forehead against dick who continued to smile up at him. "you didn't fail...Bruce.." he whispered voice getting fainter, "you saved me...you...saved all of us...thank you" he said so softly Bruce could barely hear him. Then he fell limp. Then there was screaming. Bruce clutched dick's body to him as he screamed, sobbing apologies as the let out a breath of fire, at least he would be able to join them soon he thought as the heat enveloped him.

System Update successful! activating 'Final Gratitude!'

Suddenly he a surge of strength flow into him, he looked down at himself, unscathed by the fire, at looked back at the blue screen that had suddenly appeared in front of him.

All Stats Increased By 200% for 10 minutes!

Bruce looked at the screen dumbfounded for a moment before snapping back when he saw the timer for 10 minutes start. He wasn't sure exactly what was going on but he knew exactly what to do. He charged forward, grabbing Damian's sword, easily dodging one of the dragons claws and cutting it off. before leaping up stabbing the blade into the it's with a cry that carried all his emotions and reverberated through the room. the dragon fell. Bruce collapsed to his knees, he had 2 more minutes of this 'final gratitude' and then he would succumb to his injuries and the gas. suddenly another blue text window popped up.

Bruce let out a defeated sob as he collapsed onto the ground, the effect from before slowly wearing off. "then what's the point?" he cried mournfully. he stared at the lifeless bodies of his children, as his breathing became laboured, 'another wish...' he thought. 'I wish...I could try again, and do better by them' he thought as tears pooled in his eyes and his vision started to become spotty

Chapter Text

Bruce launched upwards from his bed clutching his chest, heaving as his eyes darted around the room frantically. He snatched his phones from the bedside table to check the date, releasing a deep sigh of relief when he saw the date. It was just over a month after the disastrous argument that led everyone to walk out on him. Looking himself over, he found himself resembling a mummy, remembering the intense fight he had with Bane he had a couple days prior that had led him to be bed bound temporarily. Perhaps it had all been some kind of drug induced dream then? Bruce shook his head, stumbling out of bed with uncoordinated urgency, ignoring the jolts of pain the erratic movements sent throughout his body. he needed to check. he needed to see. he needed to know.

With some struggle, he eventually made it to the kitchen, freezing when he saw Alfred, his back turned to him, prepping for dinner. he felt a pressure build behind his eyes, images of his lifeless, broken body invading his mind. he took a cautious step forward, "Alfred?" he whispered, as if he believed if he spoke any louder he would disappear like dust in the wind and this would all turn out be some kind of sick dream. Alerted by his voice, the old butler turned around with a startled gasp, "Master Bruce!" he exclaimed, abandoning his work to rush to support the his ward who looked on the brink of collapse. "What are you doing up? You should know you're in no position to be moving around right now" he chastised gently, slowly helping Bruce sit down in a chair. All the while Bruce continued to stare at him as if he'd seen a ghost, a painful, overwhelming grief twisting itself onto his face as pulled the butler into a hug, further startling him. "Master Bruce! whatever is the matter?" he asked, hugging him back as his worry continued to grow at his ward's unexpected behaviour. Bruce simply shook his head from where it was hidden in Alfred's shoulder, "It's nothing I juts...had a bad dream" he mumbled, refusing to meet the butler's gaze. "Ah I see..." he responded, knowing there was more to it but not wanting to push the clearly already distressed man; instead he pat he ran his fingers through his hair, a nostalgic comfort for both of them as they sat silently in each other's embrace.

Bruce finally drew back after a couple minutes, his hands placed firmly on the butler's shoulders, a serious and desperate expression on his face. "Alfred, you know I'm grateful for everything you've done for me right? I would be where I am or who I am if it weren't for you" he confessed earnestly. He needed him to know, to understand. "I wouldn't trade you or the kids for anything in the world, you're then most important things in my life and I'm sorry I never made that clear but-" Bruce's rant was cut off when Alfred once again pulled him into a tight embrace, his body enveloping his despite being much smaller like a weighted blanket. Warm. comforting. Alive. "Oh my dear boy," Alfred whispered, his voice breaking ever so slightly, "Of course I know that, we all do" he reassured, hands running through his hair again, Bruce leaning into the familial touch. "even if you haven't said so out loud we all know it, and the sentiment is returned I assure you." he stated as bruce wrapped his arms around the man who had raised him as his own all these years, droplets flowing from his eyes, "thank you" he spoke in a hushed whisper, not trusting his voice not to break if he spoke any louder. he let out a sigh of relief as he let himself be held by the older man. this is fine, what happened was clearly just a dream, he'll go check on his kids later and let them know exactly how he feels whether they want to to see him or not. but for now he was content to relax in the arms of a man who was his father in everything but blood. "I love you Alfred" he said, a flurry of familiar blue screens popping up as he did so

Congratulations On Awakening Bruce Wayne!

...what?

Bruce sat at the table, absentmindedly watching Alfred prepare dinner while also examining the series of icons floating in front of his face that appeared to only be visible to him. a heavy weight settled on his shoulders as he realised this meant it wasn't a dream. his family had really died. he had really died. he had actually gone back in time. with a quiet sigh he clicked on the icon titled DRAGON SLAYER(L) jumping slightly when three more icons popped out from it

He could barely reign in his own excitement so as to not worry Alfred. He decided to click on the other icon titled PERFECT NURTURER causing four more icons to pop up

Bruce hummed in intrigue at the descriptions of the skills, it seemed the last one was required for him to use the others. no matter, he probably won't use them all that much. he turned to the fourth skill icon and his expression soured in disgust

Skill: FINAL GRATITUDE (L): Upon Death, All Influenced Target's Skills Are Transferred To User At Twice Their Strength For Seven Days

Bruce shook his head at the last time he "used" that skill. I'd rather not use that ever again he thought when a plate of food was suddenly placed in front of him, jolting him out of his concentrated state "here you are master Bruce, I hope you enjoy" Alfred said, a warm smile on his face that Bruce returned, thanking him for the food. As he ate he glanced up at Alfred washing the dishes and decided to test out one of these new skills, activating PROMISING SPROUT causing a blue screen to appear.

He clicked on MY KID IS THE BEST to check the keyword, promptly choking on his drink as he did so

KEYWORD: "I LOVE YOU"

Chapter 3: My Kids Are The Best!

Chapter Text

Bruce stood nervously outside the door of Dick's apartment, his heart clenching as he heard the sound of laughter from beyond it. they sounded so carefree and happy, was it really right for him to go in and potentially ruin it? Just because he's feeling a little antsy over their safety? Wasn't that the reason they were so mad at him in the first place? a storm of doubt began to form within Bruce's head. he tugged anxiously at the collar of his turtleneck, the soft, warm fabric providing a level of comfort. 'At this point about two months and 5 days should have passed since our argument' he thought bitterly, the memory of the fight coating his tongue in lemons. It had started with a mission that didn't go quite as planned, causing both Damian and Tim to be injured. although they would they would both be fine by morning, the thought that a simple mission that should've resulted in no injuries could quickly go wrong like that grated on Bruce's already frayed nerves. He had been up for four days and was looking forward to spending an easy night with his family to unwind a bit yet it clearly didn't go as planned. the mixture of exhaustion and worry caused him to snap and scold them with more aggression than he ever intended.

"How could you be so careless? what if Cass hadn't been there? you both could have died as a result of your little stunt" he scolded, arms crossed and glaring harshly at the two younger members of the family who had the decency to look a little ashamed. "We didn't do it on purpose" Tim tried to reason "It was an accident" he defended, which only only frustrated Bruce further. "That's no excuse, it was a simple mission there would have been no "accidents" if you were paying proper attention to your surroundings" he grit out, aware that he should probably shelve this conversation for tomorrow but too tired to stop himself. He need them to understand that they had to be careful, he wouldn't always be there if something went wrong and the others wouldn't either, they needed to be careful avoid unnecessary injuries.it seemed Jason took exception to his choice of words as scoffed and marched up to Bruce, jabbing a finger in his chest as he spoke, "Oh please, like you've never made a mistake before, don't act so high and mighty" he snarled, green dancing dangerously in his eyes. "Yeah Bruce, it was an accident, no need to make them feel any worse than I'm sure they already do" Dick chimed it, standing beside Damian with a comforting hand on his shoulder. Steph pipped up just as he was about to respond, "Yeah give it a rest old man, it's not like anyone was badly hurt and we still won so what's the big deal?" Steph asked casually, looking done with the situation. her nonchalant attitude doing nothing to quell his irritation. why couldn't they understand how serious this was?

Pinching the bridge of his nose, he let out a frustrated sigh, "That's not the point Stephanie" he ground out, "no one should've gotten hurt in the first place, they should've paid more attention and been more careful! They should've known better than to be so reckless!" he yelled, slamming his fist onto the table, startling everyone in the room. Dick came forward in front of everyone to glare at him for his outburst. "you need to calm down, it was an accident they didn't mean for anything bad to happen" he said lowly, warning clear in his tone. Bruce should have walked away, he should've let himself calm down but he was tired and his kids couldn't understand he just didn't want them hurt more than they had to be. If it were up to him they would never get hurt but it isn't so he needs them to be hurt less. but he doesn't know how lese to let them know since they clearly weren't listening to him. "that's not the point!" he screamed, his voice echoing off the walls, his kids stepped back in shock at his sudden raise in volume, dick recovering first and levelling him with a disappointed stare. He grabbed Damian and began walking towards his motorcycle, the others followed suit.

"where are you guys going?" Bruce questioned, dread and guilt pooling in his gut they began getting on their respective vehicles. "you clearly need some time to cool off, maybe do some self reflection and realise other people have feelings" Dick hissed, handing damian, who glanced guiltily at Bruce, a helmet, "so I'm gonna take Damian out of here before you say or do something he doesn't need to see or hear, I'll come get Duke tomorrow, don't contact us till you're ready to apologise" he snarled, getting on the bike himself and driving off before Bruce could respond. Tim went Jason and Cass left with Steph, and soon it was just him alone, blanketed by the cold isolation of the cave, regret seeping into every pore. He collapsed into a chair, holding his head in his hands as a headache began to form. He messed up again. And now he was alone.

Bruce stood in front of that door for another good 10 minutes before he finally worked up the courage to knock. within seconds the door is opened to reveal dick who's expression fell as he saw him. "oh. it's you" he said awkwardly, eyeing him suspiciously, "Did you need something?" he questioned curtly when Bruce didn't say a word, thinking Bruce was here to start another fight. Bruce shuffled awkwardly, thinking of what to say to avoid upsetting dick or having him turn him away. "I...wanted to talk. To apologise about what happened" he tacked on the last part quickly, hoping it would be the thing that convinces Dick to let him in. a look of shock washed over Dick for the briefest moment before he schooled his expression back into something more neutral. "you...want to apologise?" he asked, voice laced with scepticism, and wasn't that just painful? his oldest son, the one who's known him the longest, was baffled by the idea of Bruce admitting to his mistakes. He'll have to fix that today. "yes." he stated plainly, "May I come in?" he asked hopefully. Dick just gave him a once over before retreating back into the apartment with Bruce's heart sinking as he did so, was he too late? his worries were proven wrong when dick once again opened the door, wider this time, and stepped aside to allow Bruce in, "come on in then"

Standing in front of his children again after watching them die brought about a level of disorientation Bruce never thought he could experience. emptions flooded him, threatening to burst out at gentlest prod, and the most prominent of which, was relief. relief that his kids were here, they were safe, they were alive. Bruce's wish had actually come true. He swallowed how the storm of emotions, at met the expectant gazes of his kids. "well?" Jason asked, raising an expectant eyebrow, "are you just gonna stand there all night?" he mocked when Bruce continued to stare at the in silence. Cass, always so quick to read him, gave him a harsh smack on the arm, "He's overwhelmed. Thinking. Be nice." she warned as Jason rubbed his arm and glared half-heartedly at her admonishment. Damian stepped forward cautiously, "father, are you alright?" he asked, noting the slightly glassy look in his father's eyes. Taking a deep breath to compose himself, Bruce smiled down at his son. "Yes I'm fine thank you for asking Damian" he reassured before facing the rest of the family, "I came because I decided it was time to address the argument that occurred a couple months back" he informed, clearing his throat, quickly going over the things he planned to say. "you mean when you totally overreacted and blew up at us for no reason?" Steph taunted, arms crossed waiting for his explanation. Bruce sighed again, not letting himself be riled up. "While I admit I overreacted and said things I didn't mean, it wasn't "for no reason" as you say" he explained. "oh yeah?" and then what was this "reason"?" Jason snarked, earning a glare from Damian and another smack from Cass. "Stop interrupting father and you'll know" Damian hissed, Cass nodding in agreement. Bruce would be forever grateful for those two, should buy them a gift after this, maybe a new art supplies for damian? and some new dance shoes for Cass. he smiled gratefully at them before continuing. "the reason I was upset was not because you made a mistake, but because you made a mistake that could have been avoided and were hurt as a result" he explained, taking another deep breath to gather his thoughts, fidgeting with the hem of his turtleneck as he spoke again "when I saw Tim and Damian hurt I got scared, you kids are the most important part of my life and I can't stand the thought you getting hurt more than you need to. I shouldn't have yelled but I was coming off four days no sleep and I didn't know how else to tell you to be more careful" he confessed, his voice tapering off and breaking at the end both from him running out of air and the torrent of emotions settling in his chest. He looked down and shut his eyes in embarrassment "I understand if you don't forgive me but-" he was cut off when a weight crash into him, opening his eyes he found everyone, sans Jason, Babs and Duke hugging him tightly.

"Of course we forgive you you emotionally stunted idiot" Steph said, hugging him tighter. "knew you'd clear things up" Cass stated proudly, leaning her head on him. "I never doubted your intentions father, but I appreciate the sentiment and explanation non the less" damian stated, his face flushing slightly at the admittance. Dick raised his head to gesture for the rest to join in, Duke and Babs doing with little qualms while Jason hung back for a while longer before reluctantly joining the group hug. "thanks for worrying about us boss man" Duke said jokingly. "whatever, just say you're worried next time, not like we need it, we can handle ourselves" Jason mumbled bashfully. Bruce smiled, "I know, I just...I love you kids very much" he admitted, pulling them in closer as Dick and Steph awed at his eyes. just behind them Bruce saw a collections of status windows appear, making him smile wider knowing he feeling were received and reciprocated

Bruce smiled contently before wincing when Tim brushed against the bandages on his side, an action that didn't go unnoticed. "Are you..Are injured? did you come here while injured?" Tim asked after pulling back. "it's nothing serious, I'm pretty much all better" he tried to reason, hoping they'd take his word for it and let it go. they did not. after a thorough look over from his kids and an explanation of what happened they each sat with a cup of tea in their hands, making idle chatter. "how'd you manage to convince Alfred to let you out of the house while you were injured anyway?" Duke asked curiously, the butler normally putting them on strict bed rest until they were fully healed bar mandatory activities such as school or work. Bruce once again looked sheepish as he took a sip of his tea. "I didn't" he admitted like a kid caught red handed, "I snuck out". the kids stared at him unblinkingly for a few moments before they gave a collective shout.

"what!?"

Chapter 4: Promising Sprouts

Notes:

This chapter is mainly to establish the ranks and abilities of the main characters. Because Bruce is the only one aware of and able to actively use skills, all the skills I’ve decided to give them are passive or buff skills. Anyway aside from that I hope you enjoy ^^

Bruce ended spending the night at the apartment after making an apologetic phone call to Alfred, letting him know where he was and assuring him he would be back in the morning. they had decided to have a movie marathon in the living huddled up in the living room like a pack of penguins, Duke and damian were the first to fall asleep, only just making it pas the first movie and barely making it past the start of the second before they promptly passed out, duke in a beanbag by the couch and damian on Bruce's shoulder, who was content to run his fingers through his son's hair as he slept, revelling the childlike innocence damian showed as he slept, something he rarely got to see when he was awake. the rest followed suit not too long after leaving Bruce as the only one awake. Bruce gave a small hum of satisfaction as he read over all the information presented to him, making a note to see how he could help Duke raise his rank at later date. As he begins to drift off to sleep, he briefly wonders if he could use these skills on members of the justice league, though the thought of having to say "I love you" to them sent a shiver down his spine. He'll put that on the backburner for now.

the entire morning after had been something out of dream for Bruce, waking up surrounded by his kids had filled him with warmth the second he opened his eyes, a warmth that grew proudly as he sat and had breakfast with them, making idle chatter about their day; and by the time he made it home with everyone in tow, he was certain his organ would melt or he would spontaneously combust from the force of the mini sun that had settled firmly in his soul when Alfred welcomed him home with a warm smile and gentle hug, telling him how he's relieved he's ok. the desire to not be made fun of by his kids was the only keeping his eyes somewhat dry.

They spent the whole day together doing various activities, chatting, and simply enjoying being together. currently Bruce was supervising Tim, Damian, Duke and Steph play video games to ensure no one (Tim and Damian) tried to kill one another while Dick and Cass occupied themselves with a board game, Babs worked on her laptop, Alfred quietly knitted in a corner and Jason sat beside him on the couch reading 'Lord of the Flies'. it was a scene straight out of his imagination, something he's dreamed about for years. and now he finally had it. the people he cared most about were in front of him and they were safe and they were happy and they were breathing and they were alive and-

"hello? Earth to Bruce. you there?" Jason asked, waving a handing in front of his face, bring the man out of his rapidly spiralling thoughts. He glanced around the room to find everyone watching him with a worried expression. the gave Jason a question look.

"sorry I wasn't paying attention did you say something what's with all the worried looks? is everything ok?" he asked, voice hitching up at the end as anxiety began to worm its way into his heart. Had he missed something? Did he do something again? before he could drag himself further down that hole, Jason snapped hi fingers in his face to draw his attention again.

"calm down old man we're fine, everything's fine" Jason assured, motioning for him to look around the room to check for himself, "You're the one we should be asking that to, you were spaced out for a good 10 minutes and thought you would rip the couch from how hard you were clenching down on it" he explained, gesturing vaguely to Bruce's hands. He looked h=down and sure enough, he had the cushions in a death grip as if they had personally done something to offend him. Taking a deep breath in and out, Bruce willed himself to relax and let go of the couch, rubbing out the cramp that had formed, throwing an apologetic look at his family.

Sorry I've been a little...stressed...lately, I didn't mean to worry you, everything's fine now." he expressed placatingly. He needed to get his thoughts under control, he couldn't risk worrying his family and having them investigate, not when even he himself was really sure of anything yet. It wasn't a difficult task, he's trained for year to supress unwanted thoughts and emotions, this time would be no different.

"well if you ned a way to blow off some steam I've got a lead on the drug trafficking operation with Bane that you were investigating before he beat you up, want to go check it out?" Babs suggested, a knowing smirk on her face. Bruce was not at all surprised when all his kids jumped up and raced towards the cave like a pack of dogs, instead he just chuckled and followed slowly behind along with Babs and Alfred. this would be the perfect way to get his mind off things, and get back at Bane for beating him last time.

Chapter 5: My Kids Are So Great!

Chapter Text

A group of men chatted loudly to one another, loading items onto a struck from a large storage unit, unaware of the shadows observing them. Bruce stood perched atop a building overlooking the space, figure encased by the shadows of his cape, seven sets of eyes spread out around him, waiting for a signal. Bruce had given them the run down of the situation beforehand, Large amounts of venom have found being sold as a "performance enhancement" drug which has led to an in crease in violent crimes throughout the city. He had been investigating a lead to where the shipments were being brought and stored when Bane ambushed him, resulting in a fight that forced him to retreat for the time being due to his injuries. And now that he was just about fully recovered, he looked forward to thoroughly repaying the rogue for every hit.

"Alright I've gathered all the info, which felt way easier than usual for some reason but I digress, there should be about 50 men total in there along with Bane and well worth over 200 pounds of venom" Babs explained through the coms, Bruce suppressing a grin when she mentions having an easier time than usual. He had been worried that the skills wouldn't work seeing as how they weren't aware of them existing but it would seem his fears were unfounded. He makes a mental note to sera aside some time in the future to test out each of their skills, most likely under the guise of a training exercise.

"Damn 200 pounds? I feel like that's a lot even for Bane" Duke joked, earning a laugh from everyone as he stretched in anticipation of the fight that would undoubtedly ensue the second they got on the ground. The rest weren’t all that different, all antsy and Easter to get on the ground and make those lowlifes regret messing with their city, an eagerness that was for some reason heightened at the idea of getting payback at the man that forced their father, who was almost more stubborn than he was smart, to be put on bed rest.

Bruce cleared his throat to draw their attention, “you’re right Duke it is a lot” he agreed, “ that’s why we can’t cross out the possibility that some of the men in there are under the influence of it, therefore we need to be we need a plan. Red Robin, any suggestions?” He said, turning to the the boy who froze when all eyes were suddenly on him. “You’re asking me? As in you want me to come up with the plan?” He question sceptically, voice rising with confusion with every syllable, jaw dropping when Bruce simply responded with a nod and an affirmative grunt. “I trust you” he stated plainly, ignoring the sting of his son not believing he would trust him to make the plan. And it wasn’t a lie, Tim was beyond brilliant, and if the skills were working as they should, even if his plan was to just charge straight and bat them all to a pulp, it would probably succeed. Ignoring the stunned looks from his kids he continued to look at Tim, clearing his throat again to snap him out of his stupor. “Well?” He asked expectantly.

said vigilante quickly shook his head to gather his bearings, stance straightening as he spoke, "Well the best option would be to ambush them from different angles, split them up into smaller, more manageable groups . Since there's 50 of them and 7 of us, we'll aim for about 5 goons per person and Bruce can go after Bane" he explained, everyone else nodding along in agreement

"sounds good to me, now let's get down there teach those punks a lesson" Jason said, cocking his guns before jumping down, the others following quickly with Tim mumbling complaints about him "rushing in like an idiot". Bruce hung back briefly, smiling when he saw the window pop up

Tim Drake has activated skill: BRILLIANT DETECTIVE (S). strategy success rate has increased to 90%. all stats increased by 100%

He gave a satisfied grin before he jumped down to join his kids, he couldn't let them have all the fun right?

"Don't give them too many concussions guys, we want to make sure out message STICKS" Dick yelled, throwing an escrima at another goon's head, knocking him out in time with the chorus of groans that reverberated through the unit. Everything had gone perfectly as they'd hoped, Bruce is almost certain this is the quickest bust they've ever done. Bruce had PROMISING SPROUT active throughout the whole fight and he smiled inwardly every time he saw someone's stats go up. The only issue is that Bane had yet to make an appearance, and despite how easy things had ben so far, Bruce found himself feeling strangely tired, he wasn't sure he'd be up to fight the man if he showed up any later, which would be a shame since he'd so been looking forward to it.

He was brought out of his musing by a loud yelp, turning in the direction of the sound, he felt his blood turn to ice as he saw Bane hoist Damian up by his hood, throwing her across the room, his body colliding with the wall with a resounding crack. "ROBIN!" he yelled, rushing to his side, blood and broken limbs flashing in his mind as he knelt next to him. "Son? are you alright? talk to me" he spoke desperately, ignoring the fight that had ensued in the background, with the goons invigorated after bane had doused them in venom.

Damian let out a strained groan in reply, slowly sitting back up with his father's assistance. "I'm alright father, don't worry about me and go help them with those drugged up imbeciles, I'll be fine in a moment" he assured the man, motioning to behind him where his kids were clearly starting to struggle a bit with Steph got thrown into Cass.

"Spoiler! Black Bat!" he yelled, panic surging through him like a tidal wave, wanting to go over and check on them but also not wanting to leave Damian alone. His fear quelled slightly when they each gave a thumbs up before jumping back into the fray. Bruce knew he should go join them, to help them, yet his feet were filled with lead as the he felt the floor turn to quicksand, forcing him to stand there uselessly as Damian used him to stand on unsteady legs. His heart raced with every hit his kids took. He had to move. He had to help them. He had to do SOMETHING. He desperately wracked his brain for some semblance of a plan but he just could not focus.

"Father?" Damian asked, concern dripping from his voice as he watched his father stand as still as a statue, small tremors shaking his form as he watched the fight, why wasn't he moving? did Bane perhaps hit him with some strand of fear toxin they didn't know he had? He gently shook him to try and get his attention, startling when his neck snapped to him in a an instant. "Are you...alright?" he asked cautiously, watching his father's eyes widen in some sort of realisation before soften and pulling him in a hug.

"Yes, I'm perfectly fine now son, thank you" Bruce said reassuringly, giving Damian a tight squeeze, "Shall we go help your siblings out?" he offered, a knowing small, smile on his face. He knew how he could help now. Damian gave him a slightly confused look before shrugging his shoulders and nodding in agreement. wasting no time, the two rushed into re-join the group, Bruce keeping Damian slightly behind him on account of his injuries.

"‘Bout time you guys helped out" Jason yelled, dodging a punch from a goon. Glaring when Bane let out a thunderous laugh

"You think you can win now just because you have bat here now?" he asked tauntingly, "With my new formula my goons will crush you pathetic heroes without me having to even lift a finger!" he boasted, another hearty laugh erupting from his chest.

everyone glared, lowing their stances as they prepared to face the barrage of drugged up muscle-heads once more. "Don't worry we'll be ok, he won't win" Bruce asserted to the his kids, getting various mumbles of agreement. "Just do your best, be safe and remember" he took a deep breath, slowing down the embarrassment that threatened to rise up and stop the words escaping his mouth. "I love you all!" he yelled, loud enough that there was no doubt everyone in the unit heard them

a deathly silence spread throughout the crowd, everyone staring at him in bewilderment as a smothering heat crept it's way up Bruce's skin. The silence was broken when Dick gave an amused laugh, doubling over from the force of it. "Well now that you've said that i guess we have to win" he joked, drawing his escrima stick and leaping forward, feet lighter than they had been moments ago, a window popping up in front of Bruce at the same time

Activating skill: MY KID IS SO GREAT (SS). All influenced target's stats have increased by 59%! fatigue decreased by 50%! >

Bruce supressed a relieved smile hen he saw the screen, glad his humiliation wasn't for nothing. he heard a few more bashful grumbles, mostly from Jason, a the rest of them joined in, easily overpowering the goons this time around. Bruce followed suit, charging towards Bane as the other try to escape once he realised he wouldn't actually be winning. Bruce leapt in front of him and gave a well timed throw, using the larger man's momentum to hurl him over his shoulder and into the ground, knocking him out on impact.

The police arrived shortly after and swiftly apprehended everyone and confiscate all the venom that Bane had smuggled in with Tim grabbing a small ample to look into later in the cave. The younger heroes gathered around Bruce, playfully teasing and prodding at the man.

"You goin' soft in your old age old man?" Jason ribbed, nudging Bruce with his elbow. The man was really regretting his plan now. If only it was a different phrase. Why on earth did it have to be that?

"Awww don't make fun of him Jay, Don't worry B we love you too~" Steph joked, giving him a few hard slaps on the back as she forced back a laugh. Cass nodded along sagely, though the slight tremble in her shoulders betrayed any ounce of seriousness she was trying to exude.

"Yeah exactly! no need to be embarrassed boss! It's always good when you prove you can emote and aren't just some kind of emotionless bat cryptid" Duke added helpfully, covering his mouth to hide his own laughter. This seemed to be the tipping point as the rest of them doubled over at his words. the only one not laughing Damian through Bruce did catch the amused smirk he had on his face so it was pretty much the same thing.

instead of dignifying their taunts with a response, Bruce chose the glare weakly at them, grateful that his cowl covered most of his face and his kids couldn't see the intense blush that surely adorning his face at the moment. Although by the way they were trying, and failing, not to laugh, he suspected they knew anyways. He shook his head with a fond smile and exasperated sigh, "Let's just head back shall we?" he suggested, receiving a nod from everyone in response. After such a successful mission Alfred was sure to have a treat ready for them. As he went to stand up however, a window suddenly popped up.

WARNING! insufficient MP detected!

Bruce suddenly felt a wave of nausea and exhaustion hit him, he stumbled before collapsing to the ground as his vision began to fade to black. As he passed out out, he faintly heard the alarmed screams of his family all around him as well as the muffled voices of Babs and Alfred in his ear asking everyone what happened through the comms. only a single thought made it through Bruce's fatigue riddled mind right before everything went dark. 'I'm going to get so much shit for this'

Chapter 6: House Arrest!

Notes:

I'm back!!! 🥳 here's an extra long chapter to apologise for being away so long and because I have no idea when the next one will be out 😅 hope you enjoy <3

Chapter Text

Bruce awoke to the faint sound of bickering. Blinking the sleep out of his eyes, he pulled himself up with a groan. looking around he realised he was in his bedroom and not the infirmary in the cave like he expected. "what happened?" he mumbled to himself. And right on que, a window popped up to answer his question.

Due To Insufficient MP, Your Body Was Forced Into A Temporary Recovery Mode

"Recovery mode? What on earth does that mean? And what is 'MP'?" he questioned, irritation bubbling up at not having been given this information earlier so he could avoid it.

Mana points or 'MP' Is The Energy Source Required To Use Non-Passive Skills. The Higher The Skill Class, The More MP Is Required. Prolonged Use Of High Class Skills Will Rapidly Drain MP Levels. When MP Drops To An Insufficient Level, User's Body Will Be forcefully Shut Down And Put In A State Of recovery Until MP is Restored

Bruce buried his face in his hands with a groan. that would explain it then. He had PROMISING SPROUT active pretty much the whole night, and topped it off with using MY KID IS SO GREAT on seven of his kids, it's really no surprise this happened. His begin immediately began to go work thinking of way to prevent this from happening again in the future. "Is there a way for me to monitor my MP levels? and does doing so require MP itself?" he asked after thinking it over a few minutes.

You Can Check Your MP Levels And Other Stats By Asking For a Status Window

satisfied with that response, Bruce decided it was probably time to head down, his family was probably worried. He slowly got up and braced himself on a bedside table. He must've been out longer than he originally thought for his legs to feel shakier than a new-born deer. Slowly, he made his way into the kitchen, his children's voices becoming more distinct as he got closer.

"Ugh, I don't understand why you like coffee so much, It's so bitter and gross"

"Better than that sugary abomination you call an energy drink. Honestly how do you drink more than a can of that in a day without your teeth falling out?"

"Hey! Zesty is objectively the best energy drink in terms of taste, flavour selection and caffeine levels! Plus there's not that much sugar in there"

Bruce rolled his eyes at familiar argument between Jason and Tim on coffee vs Zesty. Bruce would never let either of them know but he did enjoy one of those drinks every now and then in place of coffee. Tropical was his favourite. Tuning out the rest of their argument, he quietly entered the kitchen, clearing his throat to get his kid's attention, startling when all their heads snapped to him at neck breaking speed.

For a split second tome froze before Bruce was Promptly tacked to the ground by his children who were definitely too big to bee slamming themselves into their father, proven by the mess of tangled limbs they ended up as on the floor. Bruce, taking it in stride, simply hugged as many of his kids back as could while being crushed.

"Thank Goodness you're ok B!"

"Don't ever do that shit again old man!"

"Scared us. Mean dad"

"Alright, alright I'm sorry now would you mind letting me up so we can discuss this?" Bruce placated, grunted in appreciation when they all slowly got off him and Alfred helped pull him to his feet. placing a mouth-watering plate of food down in front of him along warm, fragrant cup of tea. The man shot the butler the most sincere, grateful look he could mister, receiving an approving nod in response.

So," Bruce started, taking a sip of his tea, feeling the tension draining from his body, whether that was because of Alfred’s new skills, the butler’s natural talents or because the recovery mode Bruce was in required an exorbitant amount of energy and nutrients, Bruce didn’t care. “How long was I out?” He asked after setting his cup down.

The family glanced awkwardly at one another, unsure of how answer the question. Dick hesitantly stepped forward, his gaze swimming with uncertainty. "Bruce.. you've asleep for three, almost four, days now" he answered, cautiously, worried about how the older man might react. Bruce promptly choked on the piece of salmon he had in taken a bite of, staring at his oldest son in bewilderment.

"three days?" he parroted smartly, eyes widening when his family nodded hesitantly. A wave of guilt washed through him, any tension relived through Alfred’s food returned twofold.

He was meant to be the adult here, he came back so he could take care of his family and protect them, not the other way around. his lack of preparedness that came from the joy being with them again resulted in him being a burden, forcing them away from their personal lives to take care of him just because he hadn't factored in his new abilities would come with restrictions. he needed to figure out a way to fix this right away to prevent it from happening again.

"I see." He said, carefully rising from his seat, sombre resolution etched into his face. "Thank you all for taking care of things the last few days then, you van go now" he stated, heading swiftly for the door, intending to head straight to his office to catch up on any work he'd missed and work out a solution to this mana problem.

He's stopped by a sudden hand on his shoulder keeping him in place, turning around he sees a sour looks on Jason's face. "that's it? You're kicking us out now that you're all better and don't need any help? You just woke up after three days and the first thing you do is work?" He asked, hand tightening with each question. "And here I thought you changed after your recent bout of emotions; I should've known better" he scoffed, pushing past Bruce and heading upstairs, likely his room to the cave to leave.

"No Jason that's not" Bruce tried to explain but the younger had already stormed off. lead settled in his stomach, his hands clenching at his sides. He messed up again. and just when his relationship with Jason seemed the best it had been in years. He'd managed to push him away again with his inability to express himself properly. Some father he was.

before he cold stew too long in his own self-loathing, Tim put a hand on his shoulder, a reassuring smile on his face. "Don't mind him B, he's just worried. you stay here and get some more rest, I'll go talk with him" he reassured before running off after his brother.

running a frustrated hand through his hair he turned back to look at the rest of his family show stood there awkwardly, unsure how to react to what had just unfolded. "If any of you need me I'll be in my office" he said plainly before exiting the room.

Bruce rested his chin on his hand as he stared at the paper in front of him. He’s written down everything he currently knew about his newfound abilities as well as everything he remembers prior to coming back. But he still couldn’t explain or understand how any of it was happening. He made a mental note to himself to contact Zatanna to see if she could help at all.

he was startled out of his thoughts by a tentative knock at the door. Quickly hiding the papers in his draw he cleared his throat to compose himself. “Yes?” he called, eyes softening when Damian peek his head through the door.

“Ah, Damian, come in” he invited, getting up from his desk and taking a seat on a couch perpendicular to it, patting the spot next to him which Damian took silently. “Is everything ok?” He asked gently, placing a hand on his sons back.

Damian’s face twisted uncomfortably before he took a breath. “Do you really have to go out tonight?” He asked, refusing to meet Bruce’s gaze.

Bruce cocked his brow in surprise, with how similar the two were he thought the boy would the last to have any grievances he had with Bruce returning to duty so soon after waking up. “Gotham needs Batman, it’s not right for me to leave all of you the responsibility of filling that role when I’m still able to fill it” he explained, trying his best to explain he just didn’t want them to have to deal with any more hardships.

Damian clenched the fabric of his pants, spinning around to face his father. “But we can handle it!” He yelled, startling Bruce with the sudden change in volume. “And as the blood son it’s just as much my responsibility as it yours!” He declared, a sullen expression washing over his usual prideful features as he averted his gaze once more. “I want to be able to help you father” he revealed quietly, “don’t you trust us? Me?” He asked softly, face twisting at his own uncharacteristic display of vulnerability.

Bruce stared in stunned silence at damian's confession before pulling him in close. "Oh Damian" he sighed, running a hand through the boys hair, "I trust you and your siblings more than anything" he declared, pulling back and cupping the boys face in his hands, a small but impossibly gentle smile on his face as he stared unwaveringly into his son's eyes. "But as a father it's my job to take care of you not the other way around" he stated gently, "we've both missed out on so much of your childhood already, I want you to be able to see you grow up a little longer is all" he clarified, pressing his forehead against Damian's. "I know first hand the weight that comes with the cowl and I wear it so that one day neither I nor anyone else will have to again. Now that may not be possible but until the day I no longer can comes, it's my burden to carry, not any of yours ok?" he continued, despite the lump forming in his throat. despite the how out his depth he felt he reminded himself he was given this opportunity to be with his family again and he wouldn't ruin it by letting the things he so desperately wanted to say go unsaid from due to fear.

"but-"

"But if it'll put your mind at ease," he started, cutting the younger off as he bit his lip in contemplation before gave a resigned sigh, "I can postpone returning to active duty in Gotham a couple more days I suppose" he said, watching as his youngest son's mood seem to immediately lift.

"Really?" he asked sceptically, "what's the catch?" he question one brow cocking suspiciously. Bruce shook his head with a small chuckle,

"there's no catch, I'll just help out from the cave and I'll still leave for league duties so it's not like I'm completely leaving it all to you guys" he explained much to Damian's chagrin.

"so you're not actually taking a break" he deadpanned, crossing his arms in a huff. "But I suppose it's a good enough compromise for now" he conceded with a pout.

"thank you for understanding" Bruce replied with a small laugh before staring at the clock. "well since I won't be heading out tonight I guess I'll head to bed early" he declared, getting up from the couch and heading towards the door. "Would you like to sleep with me tonight Damian?" he offered, a hopeful smile on his face.

red creeped up the boys face at the suggestion as he stared at his father in offence. "Father I am much to old to be needing such comforts" he declared indignantly.

"You may not need it but do you want it?" Bruce retorted, waiting patiently as Damian battled within himself before giving the tinniest nod, refusing to make eye contact. "great, I'll wait for you in bed then" Bruce said before heading off, warmth blooming in his chest, happy to finally be able to tell Damian some of the things he never got to last time...

the reminder of his situation cause him pause in his tracks, hands clenching at his sides. maybe he shouldn't have agreed to take a break, what if something happens to them on patrol and he isn't there to stop it or help? what if they encounter the architect early and are whisked away into one of his gates? he'd lose them all over again and this time he wouldn't even be there to say goodbye. what if, what if, what if.

Bruce shut his eyes tight and forced himself to take a breath, he can't let himself get overwhelmed like this, especially not out in the open where his family could see. He didn't need to worry them more that he already has. he willed his heartbeat to a steadier rhythm before continuing to his room. he promised Damian he would be waiting there and he swear he won't break any more promises this time round, even small ones like this.

opening the door to his room he was shocked to find Jason slouched in a chair by his bed, absentmindedly flipping through one the books he kept on his night stand. "Jason, what are you doing here?" he asked in in surprise. Jason didn't look up from the book and simply held his phone up

"Demon brat said you were taking a break tonight so I decided to come and make sure you actually came and didn't sneak off instead" he said nonchalantly, still flipping through the pages, clearly not trying to read as he never stayed in one page more than a couple seconds.

"I see..." Bruce responded as an awkward silence washed over them. It didn't last though as Jason Quickly stood up and began to walk past Bruce out the room.

"well since you clearly weren't lying I'm just gonna go now" he said only to be stopped when Bruce placed a hand on his shoulder.

Jason turned and glared sharply at Bruce. "what? you gonna lecture me on what I said this morning? well save it I'm not in the mood" he hissed, gren dancing across his eyes.

FEAR RESISTANCE ACTIVATED. INTIMIDATION EFFECT REMOVED

Bruce felt a wave of calm wash over him, the tension he felt building mellowing out. taking a deep breath he looked at his son. his amazing child who lost so much and still came back to him despite all the ways he failed him. his son who's suffered so much in his short life and has still chosen to be a good person all things considered. "I just-" he paused, swallowing down the flood of emotions that threatened to spill out and drown the them both. "thank yo. for staying. and taking care of me" he stated curtly, not trusting himself to say much more.

Jason blinked in bewilderment at his words, rubbing his neck awkwardly as blue washed away the green in his vision. "It's whatever...If you're tired just say so next time" he muttered, shrugging the hand off his should and turning once more to leave.

"I'll be off for a little bit. maybe... we could go somewhere together, you can choose the place" Bruce offered quickly not wanting the chance to slip away.

Jason eyes his for a moment before once again shrugging his shoulders. "Don't forget you said that" he grumbled before exiting the room and closing the door behind him. Bruce stared at the closed door for a solid five minutes before walking over to his bed and collapsing into the soft mattress, falling asleep almost immediately, mentally exhausted from the roller coaster of emotions he'd been on that day.

he stirred hours later feeling weight all around him, he blinked open his eyes to find all his children huddle up together with him. as if sensing he had woken up, Dick peeked up sleepily with a tired smile. "Dami said you were taking a breaks o we decided to all take the night off. Kate and Luke said they'd take care of things tonight and they've got harper on standby if anything happens" he explained before laying back down and promptly falling back asleep. satisfied that things were taken care of, Bruce let himself drift back to sleep, calmed by the knowledge he was surrounded by his family and they were all safe for the time being

Chapter Text

The last couple days had been a blur. a wonderful, frustrating blur. Bruce spent just about every waking minute with one of his kids which was absolute bliss. and he didn't get into a single argument! on the other hand, he spent every waking minute with one of his kids. After the second day he began to understand why they found his mother Henning so frustrating. except they were somehow worse! They didn't stop him from working in the cave sure but they stopped him from just about every other basic task. He wants a snack? Damian's already got a two plates and is pushing him to sit and watch him work on artwork for one of classmates stories or show off a new trick he taught Titus. He wants to get a book from the library? Jason's got a whole pile and will be very offended if you imply there's nothing you're interested in in the pile. He wants to get some WE worked done to take some load off Tim's plate? the boy's already organised everything so well pretty much all Bruce has to do is sign his name. and so on and so forth. The only plus side was that due some of their skills, patrolling's been a breeze since they've got little to no fatigue, something Bruce is once again grateful for the system for as not only does he hate seeing them tired after a gruelling night of protecting the city but also because they're less likely to be injured.

speaking of patrol; it seems his little fainting stunt shocked them more than he initially thought since they did their damndest to get to stay home and rest.

"just a couple more days to be sure" Dick would plead, and how could he ever say no to his oldest son after everything he put him through? especially when talons protruding from a back and a blood gurgled farewell invade his mind every time he tries argue with him.

"worked hard. deserve some rest" Cass would reason, leading him to the studio to watch her practice her latest routine. and when the memory of those warm hand going cold in his grasp makes itself known, any rebuttal he has dies on his tongue.

this continued for a week before Bruce had enough. he got dressed, left a note and headed out. afterall, he a had important meeting to get to.

A gangly humanoid creature flew past Bruce’s head as he opened the door to the restaurant, dissolving to dust as it hit the ground with an ear-piercing shriek. taking a look inside he was greeted with utter chaos. The restaurant had been completely trashed, and standing proudly at the centre of it all was Zatanna with Constantine rocking back and forth on a chair nearby, swirling a glass of gin he no doubt helped himself to.

"If you needed help you should've told me to come earlier" he joked flatly, the magician spinning around at the sound of his voice.

"Bruce! It's so good to see you!" Zatanna exclaimed rushing over and giving the man a hug which he softly reciprocated.

"It's good to see you too Zee but go easy on the name calling please" he said, removing his cowl with an exasperated smile.

A sharp wolf whistle cut through their moment as John approached and draped an arm around the bat. “Been a while basty, you’re lookin’ tall, dark and handsome as ever, if it weren't for big blue I might’ve been tempted to make a move” the magician flirted shamelessly, unaffected by the harsh bat glare sent his way.

“Long time see John, I see you haven’t changed much” Bruce deadpanned, flicking John’s hand off his shoulder.

“Nope!” John exclaimed proudly, shrugging his shoulders before heading back towards the bar to help himself. Zatanna rolled her eyes, shaking her head in exasperation.

"Ignore him, he's only here because he needed my help after another run in with Felix Faust" she explained, grabbing his arm and guiding him to sit at one the few non trashed tables. as they sat two glasses floated in front of them, turning to the bar john raised his own glass with a wink. With another roll of the eyes the two turned to face each other once more. "so," Zatanna started, taking a sip from her glass, "You said you wanted to ask me about a possible new magical artefact?" she inquired curiously.

"yes." Bruce replied curtly, one hand pushing his own glass away as he thought about how to best explain without giving too much away or sounding insane. "Is it possible," Bruce began carefully, "For there to exist an artefact with the ability to turn back time?" he continued, he knew the answer was probably yes so he wasn't too worried about it rousing suspicions. it was the following questions he had he had to think about his wording for.

The magician tilted her head in confusion. "there are lot of artefacts that have the ability to turn back time you'll have to be a little more specific" she said raising a expectant eyebrow, "But you already knew that Bruce so what are you really after?" she asked, leaning forward to rest her chin on her palm, waiting patiently for her friend to speak.

Bruce's face scrunched in concentration, trying to find the right words. "What about an artefact that would allow a person to created pocket dimensions and summon creatures within those dimensions? would it be possible for it also be able to allow it's user to change their form? if that kind of artefact does not exist then are there any spells that would allow the a person to do the things I just listed?" he inquired, rapidly, barely giving the other a time to respond before firing another question.

"whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down big guy, one question at a time" Zatanna Interrupted, raising a hand to stop the vigilante's torrent of questions. "although I'm certain artefacts and spells with those abilities exist I'm not sure if there's one that could do all those. and if it does exist it would be incredible unstable" she answered.

"Not to mention it'd be a bloody pain to use" John added, joining them at the table. "magic's all about give and take y'see batsy," the magician stated, swiping Bruce's glass and downing the it's contents in one gulp, "the stronger the spell or artefact the greater the price you have to pay. you'd have to some kind of god to be stop yourself goin' insane or dying" he explained, tone light despite the gravity of the information.

"hnn, I see..." Bruce muttered thoughtfully. the two magic users started to chat amongst themselves as he got lost in thought, their conversation mostly consisting of John flirting like his life depended on it. Bruce briefly peeked up and activated PROMING SPROUT

Bruce gave an interested hum, rising from his seat. "thanks for the information, I'm going to head back to Gotham now" he said heading for the door before quickly turning back around. "Before I go could I ask you both to compile a list of artefact fitting my description for me?" He requested.

"Of course, I'll look through my my dad's books to see what I can find" Zatanna responded, giving him a quick hug and a reassuring smile.

"It'll be pain in the arse but I'll have a browse through the records in the house of mystery" John added, lighting a cigarette.

Bruce gave a small smile, slipping his cowl back on, "thank you, magic isn't my strong suits so I'm grateful and I love you both for being able to help me with this" he said, rushing out the last part and shooting off his grapple before they could respond, leaving th two magicians standing with their jaws touching the floor as he disappeared.

"Wait! Get back here! You can't just say that and fly off you jerk!" Zatanna shouted, face bright red.

john, in a similar state, threw his head back with a laugh, "He should take a bloke out for dinner before he drops bombs like that" he wheezed.

Bruce's cape billowed in the wind as he leapt from rooftop to rooftop, Damian following close behind. As much as he enjoyed spending quality time at home with his kids, he definitely still preferred being out on the ground, helping protect his city. Tonight had been rough with Riddler and Scarecrow teaming up to hide canisters of fear gas around the city. Riddler had already been dealt with courtesy of cass so now they just need to to collect the final canister of fear gas before it went off.

Bruce landed gracefully on the steps outside museum, bring a hand to his ear. "Robin and I are at the location of the last canister, we're going to head in first, no doubt Riddler and Scarecrow are here too so be careful when you come" he said over the comms before making his way into the building.

"Father I believe it would best for us to split up in order to cover more ground" Damian suggested, hand gripping his sword in case of an ambush.

Bruce tensed at the idea of being separated, hands clenching as his mind immediately raced with all the possibilities of what could happen in the small amount of time Damian would be out of his sight. he opened his mouth to reject the idea but quickly stopped himself.

'No' he thought. 'He'll think I'm underestimating him if I say no and then he'll get mad and we'll fight and he'll leave and and hate me and I won't and ever see him again and-' he quickly shut his eyes tight and took a deep breath, this was not the place to be having a meltdown. And logically, he knew Damian was right, they would cover more ground splitting up and find the last canister faster.

taking another deep breath, he turned to his son to was still waiting for his response, albeit ow with a much more concern look. "Alright Robin, we'll split up, but keep me updated on your location." he ordered. Damian looked at him hesitantly before giving a shallow nod and running in one direction. Bruce took a moment to calm himself a little more before running in the opposite direction. the sooner he found this thing the sooner he could be back by his son's side.

As Bruce wandered the halls, he suddenly spun around, catching the sickle that had been hurled towards him. he let go as it was yanked back the chain attached to the handle, glaring at the figure it returned to.

"Impeccable reflexes as always Batman" Scarecrow taunted, spinning the weapon as though it were a toy. "I wonder what fearful training you had to put yourself through to obtain those reflexes, care to have a chat about it?" he enquired jokingly.

"Scarecrow" Bruce scowled, his stance lowering as he prepared to take the rogue down. "Unfortunately I think your days of chatting and diagnosing are far behind you" he said rushing forward.

"Nonsense, once a psychiatrist, always a psychiatrist, I'm still helping people, just in a more direct way than I could before" he reasoned as he dodged the vigilante's attacks.

Bruce growled, leaping forward and pinning the man to the ground, twisting his arm behind his back. "Making people live out their worst fear is not what most would consider 'helping', not tellme where you've hidden the last of the fear gas" he barked, only receiving a chuckle from the villain instead.

"You want to know where the last canister is? You inside it!" he revealed, cackling wickedly.

Bruce felt his blood run cold at his words. The museum was the 'canister'. the museum was the canister and it was about to fill with gas. It was about to fill with gas and Damian didn't have a rebreather, having given his to Nightwing since his was broken...

Bruce quickly tied scarecrow up, not caring if the bonds would be enough to stop him from escaping, and ran in search of his son. "Robin where are you?" He yelled into his comms, racing through each exhibit frantically in search of the younger vigilante as green smoke suddenly started filling the building. finally he saw him inside the art exhibit, handing covering his mouth and nose and he dodged attacks from a goon.

"Robin!" Bruce yelled, causing the him to turn towards him, a started expression on his face. unfortunately, this left him open long enough for the previous goon to knock him over the head, causing him stumble to his knees.

"No!" Bruce yelled, surging forward, knocking the goon out with single punch before kneeling before Damian and putting his own rebreather in the boy. The boy looked up at his father alarmed, only to be met with a reassuring smile before he passed out no doubt from the blow he took to his head. Bruce gently lifted his son up in his arms, pressing a kiss to his forehead, "It's alright I'll get us out of here just rest" he whispered as he began to make his way through the clouds of green to the exit

FEAR GAS DETECTED. POISON RESISTANCE ACTIVATED. GAS' EFFECTS HAVE BEEN NULLIFIED

FEAR RESISTANCE ACTIVATED. INTIMIDATION EFFECT REMOVED

Bruce smirked at the screens that popped up, impressed at the effectiveness of the skills. he was going to save a fortune on his equipment.

upon exiting the building he was greeted by his family waiting for him, worry painted clearly on their faces despite the domino masks.

"Are you guys ok?"

"why aren't you wearing a rebreather?"

"what happened to robin?"

"where's scarecrow? did he get away?"

Each kids asked one question after another, only stopping when Bruce raised a singular hand. "we are both fine, I held my breath to prevent inhaling the gas, Scarecrow should still be inside, Robin may have a mild concussion at worst and we'll discuss the rest at the cave understood?" he announced, not waiting for response before walking to the Batmobile, placing robin in the passenger seat gently before getting in himself and driving off.

Back at the cave everyone sat around either filling out paperwork or stretching to cooldown after the long night, both Bruce and Dick sat dutifully by Damian bed waiting for the boy wake up, with Bruce reading over the results of the analysis they'd done of the sample of gas they had gotten.

"Are you sure you're ok?" Dick asked, looking at him worriedly.

"I promise you I'm fine chum" he placated, sending a soothing smile at his oldest. just as Dick opened his mouth say more, damian shifted, slowly opening his eyes.

"Dami! thank goodness you're awake! Hang on I'm gonna go grab Alfred!" Dick yelled, giving the boy a quick hug before rushing off to call the butler. good, having some of Alfred's food will speed up his recovery exponentially.

"how are you feeling son?" Bruce asked, placing a hand on the boys back, startling when he suddenly wrapped his arms around the older man.

"thank you for protecting me father but please don't do that again" Damian Mumbled into his father's shirt, quickly pulling away as if nothing had happened.

Bruce sat stunned for a second before chuckled and ruffling the younger's hair. "I'm afraid I can't promise that, I'm your father after all" he said, a fond smile making its way onto his face as Damian puffed out his cheeks in a pout.

"aw man what'd you say to get him all pissy B?" Jason teased, as strolled over, pinching the boy's cheeks, earing a harsh smack. the room quickly dissolved into more teasing and banter which Bruce watched with a fond smile when a screen suddenly popped up
