Chapter Text
Everywhere he looked, there was nothing but blank space. He knew there should be more here, but there wasn't. It was just him. Alone.
Strange, how did he get here? Or maybe he always existed here.
He shook his head. No, that didn't seem right. It felt like there was supposed to be something other than this emptiness, but his mind refused to remember.
How could he not remember? Surely he had a life before this. A family to get back to. His chest ached at the thought. A vague memory of people smiling entered his mind, only to be wiped away. Completely blank like everything else here.
Well, there was no use in worrying about it. Sighing, he laid back and looked to the sky. Well, what should have been a sky. There was nothing up there. Just more endless white.
Jumping to his feet, he screamed. “Seriously! What did I do to deserve this!" There wasn't even an echo to answer him, just silence.
He swore if he had to spend another-
Wait how long had he been here. Couldn't have been more than a day. It was hard to keep track of time here, but he was sure it hadn't been that long.
He sighed and sat back down. He was already tired.
“Maybe I'll just sleep.” He thought. It at least would pass the time. Laying down on the strange white ground, he closed his sockets and tried to sleep. It didn't take long for his mind to fall into unconsciousness. There, he slept and slept and slept. Until finally, he grew tired of even that.
“That's it!” He shouted, standing up. “I'm leaving. This place has to have an exit.”
He knew it was silly of him to speak outloud, not like there was anyone here but him. But it helped to speak. To remind himself that he had a voice. That he still existed here.
Spinning in a random direction, he started walking. Surely he'd reach the end by some point. But nothing changed, just more blank space. He kept walking. Surely he was close to the exit by now. Still the same. He began running. There was nothing, nothing at all.
Despair began to wrap itself around his soul. Choking him. Collapsing to his knees, he began to scream. It never ends. Was he to be trapped here forever? What horrible god did he piss off to end up in this endless hell.
Suddenly, he heard a sound. Standing perfectly still, he listened to it. It almost sounded like laughter.
Then out of nowhere a ruckus of voices spoke all at once.
“Well, you did this to yourself, buddy.”
“This Error is quite silly.”
“Poor bastard actually thought he could escape.”
Standing up, he looked around wildly to find the source of the voices, but didn't see anyone.
“Hello, where are you?” He called out.
The voices rang out around him, louder than before.
“Woah! Can he hear us?”
“Omg, hi Error.”
“Welp, looks like you finally lost your mind.”
Still he couldn't see them, despite how close they sounded. His sockets narrowed at the last comment.
“Wait, is this just in my head?” He asked.
No, he couldn't be hearing voices. Someone was just messing with him. Yes, that had to be it.
“Bingo!”
“Wow, aren't you the sharp one?”
“To be fair, Error, you might be sane. It never clarified on whether we were real or not.”
He shook his head. He was actually hearing voices. When had he lost it? How much more insane would he become? This couldn't be happening.
He sat down and tried to breathe. It felt like he wasn't getting any oxygen, like he was dying.
“Jeez, such a drama queen.”
“Don't worry, Error. It's all part of the process.”
“Yep. You're becoming what you're meant to be. Being insane is simply a part of that.”
He tried to ignore them. To shut out the voices plaguing his mind entirely. That is if he wanted to keep what remained of his sanity. He just had to keep reminding himself that none of them were real.
A cacophony of voices all spoke up.
“Hey! We're plenty real.”
“How dare you call us fake.”
“We're more real than you!”
Wincing, he placed his hands to the side of his skull in an attempt to block them out. All this noise was starting to make his head hurt.
“Sorry, but that isn't how this works.”
“Yeah, we're in your head, dumbass.”
Gritting his teeth, he shouted. “Shut up! All of you, just shut up!”
The voices didn't comply.
“Yeesh, rude.”
“We're just trying to help.”
“Man, this Error is no fun.”
He was already sick of them all. He just wanted them to stop. He couldn't think with all this noise.
“I mean, what do you even have to think about?” Asked one of the voices.
Curling up on the ground, he buried his head in his arms. A sob escaped him before he could stop it.
“Please. I just want to be alone.” He pleaded.
One of the voices piped up. “Maybe we should quiet down. I think we pushed him a bit too much.”
“Ugh, killjoy.” Replied another voice.
Then everything went silent once more. He never thought he'd miss it, but anything was preferable to the voices.
What was he going to do? He was trapped here. There was no way out. Was he going to die in this place?
Wrapping his arms around his knees, he concentrated on trying to breathe. He stayed like that for a long time. Until he heard a noise.
Not the voices again. He didn't want to deal with them. Burying his head into his knees, he refused to acknowledge them.
He continued to sit like that, only to hear it again. It sounded like someone shouting from far away.
“Just another voice to join the others.” He thought bitterly.
“Hey! Are you okay?” Asked the voice.
He couldn't help but snicker at that. Of course he wasn't okay. What gave that impression?
He grinned as he looked up. “Hate to tell ya, but you're late to the party.” He joked, only to freeze.
Before him stood a skeleton. They wore an outfit of gold and yellow. Adorned on their skull was a gold circlet. Their sockets were staring at him, wide with surprise.
“What?” They asked, clearly taken aback by his comment.
He stared at them, completely frozen. He couldn't let them know he had been speaking to the voices in his head. They would definitely think he was crazy then.
“Sorry, I thought you were someone else.” He quickly said, feeling a blush crawl over his face.
“Great, they'll definitely think I'm crazy now.” He thought.
The skeleton froze. “You were expecting someone?” They asked, their voice stiff and uncertain.
“Uh oh. Now I've done it.” He thought, desperately scrambling to find a way to prove he hadn't completely lost it.
“No, no! I was just joking with you. Hahaha, got ya.” He tried his best to force a grin in place. No way in hell they were going to believe him. First person he met and they probably already want nothing to do with him. Man, how quickly he completely messed this up. So much for good first impressions.
The skeleton stared at him, as if studying him. He had to stop himself from shivering under their gaze, it felt like they were picking him apart with their eyelights. Like they truly saw him. It was terrifying.
After a moment they nodded to themselves, as if satisfied by whatever answer they got.
The skeleton then smiled at him. It was so bright and warm that he found himself returning it with one of his own.
“Well, I'm glad I was able to find you.” They said, their grin growing wider.
He stared at them. What the hell did that mean? Did they know him?
“Maybe we were close before I got stuck here.” He thought.
“You were looking for me?” He asked, not even attempting to hide his confusion.
The skeleton nodded and knelt before him. “Yes. I've been searching for you. I'm so glad I was able to find you in time. My name is Dream, and I'm here to get you out of this place.”
They placed a hand over their chest. “I promise that everything will be alright.”
“Get me out?” He thought.
No, this wasn't real. This was just another illusion. More tricks of this place and his breaking mind. Just one more thing fucking with him. That had to be it. There was no way the answer to his freedom would arrive so conveniently.
Though, there was one way to test if this was real. He didn't know why but the idea scared him, but he pushed through the fear. He had to know.
Slowly, he reached out a hand and touched them. Dream was solid under his hand. Warm, like sunlight.
He snatched his hand away, feeling sick. Wrong, wrong, wrong. His bones felt like bugs were crawling all over them. Biting and scratching him. It felt like death. He was never doing that again.
Dream simply stared at him. Confusion clearly painted on their face. “So, was that a yes or-?”
“Yes. Get me out of this place.” He quickly interrupted, trying and failing to hide the blush crawling up his face. He must seem like not just a weirdo, but also a freak. Who just randomly touches a stranger. Dream was probably regretting coming to save him now.
Dream nodded and stood. Without another word, they held out their hand, and a gold glow began to fill the space before them. Then suddenly an arch of golden light stood before them.
He stared at it. It was beautiful.
Dream smiled at him. “Go on. I promise it's safe.”
As he stood and began to walk towards the gold light, Dream asked. “Oh right, I forgot to ask. Do you have a name?”
He paused, just in front of the arch of light. A name. He gripped his skull trying to drag any memory to the surface, but none came.
“Hmmm. What had the voices referred to me as?” He remembered they had called him something strange. Oh well, anything was preferable over nothing. He could live with it.
He looked back at Dream and grinned. “Just call me Error.”

It was the sound that hit him first. Washing over him like a tidal wave threatening to knock him from his feet. He put his hands to his skull, but it barely helped.
The second thing to hit him was the colors. So bright and vibrant. Filling the space everywhere. It hurt his eyelights to stare at them.
Maybe this was a mistake. He was starting to think he should go back. He didn't mind the silence and he was used to the endless white. All this was just too much for him to handle.
“Hey, Error. Are you okay?” He heard Dream ask. His voice sounded muffled, like he was far away.
Error fell to his knees. It felt like someone was trying to saw his skull open. Slowly and painfully dragging the blade back and forth over his skull.
“Wow, what a loser.” Snickered a voice in his mind.
Error gritted his teeth. He did not need them chiming in right now. There was enough noise as is.
“Error, it's okay. I'll just- I'm sorry.” Huh? What was Dream apologizing for?
Suddenly he felt a hand grab him. And then it was nothing but silence. Then as quickly as it had grabbed him, the hand let him go. He realized Dream must have grabbed him. Error hated how he was already shaking just from that small amount of touch.
Dream knelt before him. A look of concern on his face. “I'm sorry. I should have guessed the city would be too much for you. I should have took you here from the start.”
Error blinked, there were less colors here. They seemed to be somewhere else entirely now. No busy city streets. Just a room with no one else around. Just him and Dream.
“Oh, did Dream somehow transport me here?” Error thought. He guessed that's why he grabbed him earlier.
Slowly he stood up. The pain in his skull was subsiding a little now that he wasn't being bombarded from all sides.
“No need to apologize. You couldn't have known.” He said. After all, Error hadn't even thought how the outside would affect him after all that time. It was unfair to expect Dream to know either.
Despite his words, Dream still looked down. A look of guilt on his face.
“Are you feeling better than?” He quickly changed the subject.
Error nodded. “Yeah. Thanks for helping me just now and, well, back there too.”
He felt a blush covering his face. Only now did he realize he hadn't even properly thanked the guy for saving him from that place. How much of a jerk he must seem.
Dream looked up at him. His expression was unreadable as he stared at Error. “No need for that. I'm just doing my duty, is all.”
His duty? Oh, so saving Error was some sort of job. It kinda hurt to know that his rescue wasn't because Dream actually cared.
“Idiot, why else would someone go through the trouble of rescuing you from that place.” He thought bitterly.
Yet, all he's done so far is cause the guy trouble. He lasted only a couple seconds before he had a breakdown and needed rescuing again. Poor Dream, he was probably making his job much harder than it had to be.
Error looked at the floor. “Sorry for causing you so much trouble.”
Dream shook his head. “It was no trouble at all. As I said earlier, I should have started you out somewhere less overwhelming.”
Error sighed and looked up at him. “I'll try to do better next time.”
Dream frowned. “It's alright, Error. You are still getting used to things. Besides, I don't mind helping you.”
Error met his eyelights. “Really?”
He had a hard time believing that. Dream was probably just being nice.
Dream gave him a smile. It was warm and bright. “Yes. Really, Error. I promise you aren't all that troublesome in comparison to others I had to work with.”
Error sighed, he'd accept that. He just hoped he didn't cause Dream anymore trouble. He rather not be a nuisance to the guy who saved him.
Standing, Error inspected the room. It looked like some sort of living room. There was a couch and across from it sat a television. It definitely looked lived in.
“Uh, where exactly did you take us? Like should we get out of here before someone yells at us being in their home?” Error asked. He'd rather not get arrested for breaking and entering.
Dream laughed, it sounded light and musical. “No worries. This is my place.”
“Oh.” Error felt his face growing hotter.
“Idiot. You should learn to keep your big stupid mouth shut.” He furiously berated himself mentally. Of course this wasn't just some random person's home. How stupid of him to think so. Dream probably thought he was the biggest idiot to ever exist.
“Aww, look at him. He's so embarrassed.” “So cute.”
Chimed in more voices.
“Shut up.” He hissed under his breath.
“What?” Dream asked, looking perplexed by his sudden outburst.
“Nothing. Anyways, this is your place. That's cool.” Error forced himself to smile, hoping Dream didn't notice how fake it was.
Luckily, Dream didn't seem to notice as he smiled back. “Thanks. It's not much, but it's home.”
“Mind showing me around the place?” The question had slipped out before he could stop it. Dream gave him a quizzical look.
“Idiot, don't just ask some random guy you just met to show you his home. He's going to think you're so weird." Error screamed at himself in his mind.
Dream looked amused as he said. “Maybe later. I still have to take you to meet Core.”
“Uh, Core?” Error asked. He hadn't mentioned them before. Were they the one who hired Dream to save Error. And if that was the case, why? Why go through the trouble? And how did they know he was even there to begin with? Did they know him in the past? No, surely Dream would have mentioned it. He had so many questions.
“This is their domain. They like to meet all new residents themselves. If you want, I could request they come here. That way you don't have to risk having another episode.” Dream explained.
Error flinched and looked away. Dream was already writing him off. Well fine, he'd show him. He could handle some dumb noise and stupid colors. Easy peasy.
“Actually, I think I feel a lot better. I can go out and see them.” He plastered a confident grin on his face.
Dream studied him. Once more he felt like Dream saw right through him.
Dream sighed. “Fine if that's what you want. Just prepare yourself okay?” He then walked over to the door.
“No need. I'm all ready to go.” Error said, following behind him.
Dream paused, his hand hovering over the door knob. “If it starts to get too much, just tell me and I'll take us back here, okay?”
“Will do.” Error said, trying to sound cheery. Like hell he'd do that. He was going to tough it out. He refused to be beaten by some colors and noise.
Dream nodded. “Alright.”
He then opened the door and stepped out. Error followed after him. It all hit him again, like a punch to the gut. So many sounds and colors all swarmed around him.
No, he refused to give up. Taking deep breathes, he forced himself to smile. “See nothing to worry about.”
Dream looked completely unconvinced, but said nothing as he locked the door.
“Try not to fall too far behind. I wouldn't want to lose you in the crowd.” He said, walking past Error.
“Crowd?” Error thought, as he felt a shiver run over his bones.
Dream stopped. “You don't have to do this.”
“I'm fine. Nothing I can't handle.” Error assured him.
He could do it. Walk through a crowd. Having people touch and bump into him. Their bodies pressing in around him. At the thought, Error felt like he was going to throw up.
“C- come on, w- what's the hold up? Let's get g- going.” He said, hating the small shake that entered his voice.
Dream sighed and walked forward, with Error quickly following after him. All around were buildings. Mostly houses, all nestled together in neat little rows. Some had flowers and plants in pots sitting outside them. It looked pretty cozy.
Error winced as some kids ran by, their laughter and yells like knives stabbing into his skull.
“Hi Dream.” They called out with a wave, as they stopped before Dream. Dream smiled at them and waved back.
“Who's this?” One asked curiously as they stopped near Error and pointed at him.
Error jumped away from their outstretched hand. He saw a flash of a knife, only to blink and see it was only a stick.
Dream chuckled at the sight. “Don't mind him. This is our new resident. Be sure to be very nice to him. His name is Error.”
The kids’ eyes lit up at that, as all crowded around Error. Excitedly bouncing on their feet.
“It's nice to meet ya, Error.” They all said, smiling up at him.
Error glared at them. For some reason the group of kids put him on edge, though he couldn't understand why. Great, can't handle the smallest of touches and scared of little children, how pathetic could he get.
“Nice to meet you too.” He said, trying to keep the harshness from his voice.
“Well we have to get going now. Bye Dream. Bye Error.” The kids waved to both and ran off.
Dream chuckled. “Not a kid person, I'm guessing.”
Error glared at him and crossed his arms. “I just don't care much for tiny brats.” He said, already feeling embarrassed.
Dream chuckled. “Well, we should hurry. Core is probably waiting.”
“Right.”
They started walking once more. Sighing Error looked up to the sky, only to see pure white.
“What?” He froze.
Oh god, this wasn't real. All of this was an illusion. He was still in that place. He started to shiver, taking short shaking breaths. None of this was real.
“Error. Hey. Are you alright? What's wrong?” Dream asked, running up to him.
“This isn't real.” Error said.
Dream shook his head. “Error, this is real. What would make you think that it isn't?”
“You can't trick me. You can do all the crazy illusions you want, but the sky is as blank as ever. I never left.” Error snarled.
Dream froze. “Oh. Oh no. Error, I'm so sorry. I should have known that it would scare you.”
Error's hands formed into firsts. “I'm not fucking scared. I'm pissed!” He shouted, his voice crackling and breaking.
Dream winced. Slowly he held up his hands as if to placate him. Like dealing with a wild fearful animal.
“It's okay, Error. This is real. There is no sky here. That's because this place is in a similar space as to where I found you. A pocket of blank space. Core and I found it centuries ago and made this city on it. You aren't trapped and you are not hallucinating. This is real.” He said.
Yeah right, as if he'd just believe that. How stupid did this place think he was.
“Prove it.” He said, glaring at Dream.
Dream looked like he was having an internal fight within himself. Only to finally look at Error. “Alright, if that's what you want.”
He looked Error directly in the eyelights. “Error, can I touch you?”
Error quickly stepped back.
Dream frowned at him. “If I'm not real than me touching you should have no actual effect right?”
“You already touched me earlier! That doesn't prove anything.” Error snarled.
Dream took a step forward. “Small interactions are easy for the mind to fake. The longer the illusion has to hold, the more you start to notice what's wrong with it. So let me prove it to you. That I am real.”
Error hesitated. He really didn't want anyone touching him, but then again if this was in his head then why did it matter.
“Fine, do it.” He couldn't stop his voice from shaking.
Dream stepped forward, closing the distance between them, and slowly moved his hand towards Error. It took everything in Error not to leap back.
Gently he reached up and cupped Error's face. Immediately Error had to fight to not pull away. Being touched felt like death. Like he couldn't breathe.
After a moment, Dream moved his hand down to the crook of his neck. Then his chest, right over his soul.
“Does this feel like an illusion to you?” He softly asked.
Error's sight started to go dark around the corners. His whole body was shaking. He felt sick.
“Stop. Please stop.” He pleaded weakly. If this continued he was sure he was going to pass out.
Dream quickly removed his hand and Error felt like a horrible weight was suddenly lifted from him. He gasped as he bent over, placing his hands on his knees. Dream was right, that was definitely real.
“I'm sorry.” Dream said, hanging his head.
Still breathing heavily, Error shook his head. “Nah, all good. I asked you to do it.”
He stood straight and looked down at Dream. He met his eyelights, a look of worry clearly painted on his face.
“That wasn't too much for you, was it? Do you need to take a break?” He asked.
Error shook his head. “Why would it be too much? It was just a little touch, nothing to get worked up about.”
Dream grimaced. “You don't have to force yourself. Everyone has things that bother them.”
Error forced a grin on his face. He hated to see Dream looking so upset. “As I said, it was no bother. Really, not like physical contact makes me sick to my nonexistent stomach.”
“Smooth, Error. Real smooth.” Cut in a voice. He ignored them.
Dream sighed. “Alright then.” He then turned away and began walking again.
Error trailed after him. Shooting another glance up at the sky as he asked. “So what exactly is this place? I realized I actually have no idea where you took me.”
He had been too focused on escaping that place, he hadn't thought too much on where he was escaping to.
“This place is called the Omega Timeline. It's a safe haven for those seeking shelter from their endless torment. Core and me, we find people in need and take them here so they have a second chance at life.” He explained.
“Like me?” Error asked.
Dream nodded. “Yes, like you. Though, you are a bit of a special case. Anyways, we work to help better people's lives.”
Dream gritted his teeth. He almost looked mad. “Actual help. Instead of forcing others to conform to what we think is best for them.”
Error didn't know what that meant. Did they have some sort of business rival? Oh well, wasn't his problem.
“So you help people? That's pretty cool. You're like some sort of hero.” Error said.
Dream smiled at that. “Thanks. We try our best, but we can't save everyone.”
A look of pain crossed over his face and quickly disappeared. Error wondered if Dream has lost someone before.
Forcing a smile, Dream continued. “As I said before, this place is another blank space, like the one I found you in. Though yours is a bit different. It's more aggressive. Alive, in a sense. We call it the Anti Void.”
“Anti Void. At least I know what to call that place now.” Error thought. It was odd to now have the name of the place that had acted as his prison for so long.
“The Anti Void is what took away your memories and changed you into what you are now.” Dream explained.
Error paused. “Wait, how did you know I lost my memories?” He was sure he hadn't mentioned that to Dream.
Dream froze, his back still to Error. “I guessed that was the case, since you said to call you Error. Most don't have to think of their names, unless they're lying or have forgotten.”
He looked back, his eyelights meeting Error's. “And I don't take you for a liar.”
Error nodded. It made sense. “Well you're right. I did lose my memory. I'm actually hoping to maybe get it back. I'm sure there are people who miss me and such. And places I should go back to.”
Dream turned away. “Of course. I'll try to help you as best I can.”
Error grinned. “Thanks. I appreciate it.”
Dream started to walk again. Their journey went on without any more interruptions.
Within a few minutes they were outside the residential area and back amongst the crowded cityscape. Dream paused to let Error gather himself. At least it wasn't as bad now that he had accumulated to the outside a little.
Once ready, he gave Dream a thumbs up and they continued through the city streets. Luckily, they were less crowded now. Must have been getting late. Though Error wondered how that worked with no sun or nighttime. Whatever, he was sure he'd find out eventually.
He followed Dream to a large building. Dream halted just before its entrance.
“This is the council hall. Core should be inside their office right now.” He said and walked in. Error quickly followed after him.
“Man, this place was huge.” Error thought, as he craned his neck to look at the ceiling high above.
He followed Dream until they came to a large door. A series of patterns was carved into the wood.
Dream looked back at him. “Ready?” He asked.
Error nodded. “Ready.”
It was time to finally meet Core.

Dream opened the door to a large office. Towards the back sat a large wooden desk. At the moment it was unoccupied.
Had they been too late and this Core person had already left. Error hoped not. It would suck if this whole trip had been a waste.
“Maybe they're just out getting coffee.” He thought, as he checked around the room.
Hanging on the walls around them were pictures. In them was a gray child. There were some solo shots of them and some pictures of them with others. A few showed them with a young girl with brown hair, both smiling happily. There were a couple with Dream as well.
“Is this Core's kid or something?” Error thought as he studied one of the pictures intently.
“Enjoying the photos.” Said a cheery voice from beside him.
Error jumped back, only to see a small gray child standing next to him. They were currently studying him, standing completely relaxed like they had always been there.
“Uh, hey kid. Are you supposed to be here?” He asked.
The kid laughed. “Well it is my office. Though I can understand your confusion, Error.”
They gave him a mischievous grin. Only then did he notice their eyes, or rather the complete lack of them. Just black empty sockets stared at him curiously.
“What the fuck!?” Error screamed.
The kid laughed. “Sorry. Most tend to find it creepy at first, but don't worry it doesn't hurt me in the slightest.” They poked one of their empty sockets to prove their point.
“I wasn't fucking worried about you! What happened to your eyes?” He yelled backing away even further.
The kid giggled. “That is quite the long story.”
They stepped towards Error, who immediately backed away, directly into the large wooden desk behind him.
Placing a hand on their hip, they clicked their tongue. “Dream, could you help me out. We'll get nowhere with him acting like this.”
Dream walked up to Error. And once beside him, gestured to the creepy child standing before them. “This is Core. My friend and the one who runs this city. You don't have to be scared, they are completely harmless.”
Error shot him a look. “Didn't think to tell me your boss is a gray, eyeless freak. Seems like you should have mentioned that part.”
Dream sighed. “Sorry. It slipped my mind. I've grown so used to them, that I forgot that most would find their appearance terrifying at first sight.”
“How rude. I've been told that I'm quite adorable.” Piped up Core from behind them. Error jumped back from the desk, only to see Core sitting at it.
“So they can teleport.” He thought. Well that would explain their sudden appearance earlier.
“Now that Error has calmed down. Shall we get started.” Core said, clasping their hands in front of them.
Error glared at them. “Wait. How do you know my name?” He definitely didn't tell them, nor did Dream.
Core just gave him a grin. “Oh sorry. I heard it earlier when you and Dream were making your way here.”
Dream groaned. “Of course you were watching.”
“Why wouldn't I be? I was quite curious about our new guest.” Core said cheerfully.
Error was confused. Didn't Dream say they were on their way to meet Core. What was the point of this whole trip if they had been stalking them from the shadows this whole time.
As if reading his thoughts, Core spoke. “I was only watching for a little bit. Besides, you needed to get accustomed to our wonderful city, so it was best to leave you be. As to why bother traveling here, well because I was also waiting here for you two.”
Error was completely lost. “Waiting here? But you just said you were spying on us earlier.”
“Yes.” They said with a smile.
Error gritted his teeth. He was already sick of this kid's mind games.
“So which is it?” He demanded.
“Both.” They said nonchalantly. Like what they said was a completely normal response.
“What!?” Error yelled. He was already starting to feel a headache starting. Nothing was making any sense.
Dream pinched between his brows. “What my friend Core is trying to convey is that they are omnipresent. Meaning they can be multiple places at once. I'm sure they're out in the city keeping an eye on things as we speak.”
Omnipresent. That was a bit creepy. To think at any moment this kid could be spying on him and he'd never know.
He crossed his arms. “Hey kid, whatever you do with your city is your business. But don't spy on me again, okay? I would rather not be watched by some creepy child.”
Core grinned at him. “Sorry, no can do.”
“Are you kidding me?” Error growled. He was already sick of this kid. Who were they to dig into his business?
Core shrugged. “Sorry Error, but it's my duty to keep the people here safe. So I tend to keep watch over new residents, just to make sure they don't cause any trouble. It's what's best for everyone's safety.”
Error's sockets thinned. “You don't trust me?”
“Nope. But don't worry. Trust will be born with time. Just like you don't trust me now either, right?” They said with no hesitation.
They got him there. He sighed, it seemed like this was a losing fight.
“Now, best to move on to more productive conversations.” Core said, cutting off all further arguments.
“So Error. Do you want to stay here?” They asked.
Error's sockets widened. He hadn't even thought that was a choice. Then again, it wasn't like he had anywhere to go. So it wasn't much of a choice either way.
“I'll stay here for now. Since I don't really have any other options at the moment.” He confessed.
Core nodded. “Most who arrive here share that similar sentiment. But worry not, as long as you follow the rules, you will always be welcomed in the Omega Timeline.”
Rules? It made sense that a city like this would have laws to follow. Still, he couldn't help but worry. What if he broke them by accident. Or couldn't remember them all.
Error fidgeted nervously. “So what's the rules?”
Core shot a look at Dream. “You didn't even tell him that. Wow, you've been slacking.”
Dream ducked his head in embarrassment. “Sorry, Core.”
Core waved him off. “All good.”
They turned their black sockets back to Error. “The rules are quite simple. No violence of any sort. While here you are to harm no one. This means no fighting. No pulling out weapons, magic or otherwise. This is to be a safe sanctuary for all who live here. Understand?”
Error nodded. Easy enough to follow.
“Next, do not take any unauthorized individuals here. Only those approved by me may enter and leave this place.” Core explained.
Error nodded. “Got it.”
Nothing too odd. If this was a sanctuary, then security was to be expected. They couldn't just let anyone in.
“Anything else?” He asked.
Core smiled at him. “Be kind to all you meet. See anyone in need, then help them to the best of your abilities. Or get someone who can help them better. Basically, just don't be a jerk.”
Error looked down. “Right.”
He wasn't the nicest guy, but he'd try his best. Hopefully his best would be good enough for this place.
Core nodded. “And that's it. Welcome to the Omega Timeline, Error. I hope your stay here is a good one. And please do not hesitate to ask for any help. We of the Omega Timeline are always happy to provide assistance.”
Core stood and walked over to where Error stood and held out their hand.
Error stared at it. “What are you doing?”
Core raised an eyebrow at him. “Haven't heard of a handshake before?”
They peeked around Error to Dream. “Where did ya find this guy again?”
Dream sighed. “Core enough of your pranks. They're not funny.”
Core took back their hand and shrugged. “Fine, and for your information my pranks are great.” They then went back behind the desk and sat down once more.
They looked up to Error. “So any questions before we call this meeting adjourned?”
Error hesitated. He didn't want to seem stupid, but he had to know. “Actually I do have one question. I was wondering, did you know me before? In the past, I mean.”
Core quickly shook their head. Error felt his soul sink, so much for that then.
“Sorry to disappoint you, Error. But no, I did not know you.” They studied him with a curious expression. “What exactly made you think that?”
Error looked down. “Well, it's just that I was wondering how Dream knew to find me in the Anti Void. How would he know I was there, if he or you hadn't been looking for me before I ended up there. But guess I was wrong.”
Core hummed to themselves. “Not a bad guess with the limited information you had.” They looked over to Dream. “Do you want to tell him, or me?”
Dream looked down. “I'll tell him.”
Core nodded. “Then I leave the stage to you my friend.”
Dream stepped towards Error. He looked nervous. “How best to explain it.” He said.
Weird, Error had yet to see the guy even slightly nervous. He wondered what got Dream all worked up now.
“I recommend just spitting it out. Like ripping off a bandaid.” Core piped in.
Dream sighed and ran a hand over his skull. “Alright. Well, Error to be honest, I didn't know it was you exactly in the Anti Void. I just knew someone was there. You see, I can sense people's feelings. Their emotions. And I felt someone's despair from that place and knew that there was a person in need of help. So I asked Core’s permission to investigate and they allowed it. So I traveled into the Anti Void, followed those feelings until I found you.”
He refused to look at Error. “It was quite the surprise. I hadn't been expecting to find someone like you. Anyways, that's it. That's how I found you. I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner.” He stared intently at the ground.
Error stared at him. “Huh, so that's how he did it.” He thought. Didn't seem like that big of a deal. What was Dream so worried about?
Wait a minute. He froze as what Dream just said hit him. His sockets widened in horror.
“Wait, you can sense emotions!?” He yelled.
That means this whole time, Dream had known everything. He knew what Error felt. Each moment of fear and embarrassment. All of it. Error felt a blush crawl over his cheeks.
Dream flinched. “Y- yes. I'm an empath. I can feel what those around me feel.”
How stupid Error must have seemed. Acting all tough, while being terrified on the inside. Dream had probably been silently laughing at him this whole time. Error looked down as he felt his face growing hotter.
“S- sorry if it bothers you. T- there is sadly no w- way to turn it off. I've t- tried.” Dream said. He almost sounded scared. The way his voice shook. Error noticed his hands were shaking as well.
Error didn't get what he was so afraid of. Sure it was a bit weird, but it wasn't anything bad. Besides, it was obvious to Error that Dream was trying his best to respect his feelings as best he could. It wasn't his fault that he had this weird ass ability. Besides, he didn't call Error out on his bluffs. Instead he let Error keep his fragile pride as best he could. If anything he had been nothing but kind.
Error looked up and forced a grin. “No. It's fine. I was just surprised, that's all.”
He immediately felt stupid. What was the point in lying about his feelings now? Dream could sense that wasn't the truth at all.
Error quickly buried his head in his hands. “Sorry. You know that's a lie, don't you?"
How stupid could he get. He wished he could just disappear from existence right about now.
“It's fine, Error. I would never force you to confess how you're actually feeling at any moment. No one should have to do that. You can lie if that's what makes you comfortable.” Dream quickly assured him.
Error peeked through his fingers at Dream. “So you'll just play along, despite knowing it's not true?” He asked.
Dream looked away. “Yes. Not everyone wants to show what they feel on the inside. Be it because of embarrassment, not wanting to be rude, or having things they rather not talk about, and I try to respect that. So if you want me to believe you, then I will. Everyone is entitled to that at least. So please act as you usually would. I promise to try and not read too closely at what you're feeling.”
Error slowly lowered his hands, and ran a hand over his skull. Whatever, this wasn't that bad. He could live with it, even if it was a bit embarrassing knowing Dream could read what he was feeling.
“It's fine. I just feel a bit stupid is all.” He grumbled under his breath.
Dream looked up at him and gave a soft smile. “It's alright. I find your false bravado quite cute.”
Error felt his face grow hot again at the compliment. “Thanks.” He said, unable to meet Dream's eyelights.
A slight blush washed over Dream's cheeks as well. “You're welcome.” He said, glancing up at Error.
Core snickered. “Well now that's dealt with. Do you have any more questions, Error?” They asked. It almost sounded like they were trying not to burst into a fit of laughter at the moment.
Error felt his face growing hotter. He had forgotten Core was here watching that whole scene.
He tried to push his embarrassment aside as he looked to Core and shook his head. He felt like if he tried to cram anymore information in his skull that it would explode.
“I'm all good for now. Thanks.” He said.
Core nodded. “Good to hear.”
They looked to Dream. “Since it's quite late I won't be able to get the request for a house yet. That and we are pretty full at the moment. Do you mind housing him for the time being?”
Error froze. He would be living with Dream. Life just couldn't give him a break it seemed.
Dream nodded. “I don't mind it.”
He shot a glance at Error. “Are you okay with it? I know most don't like the idea of someone peering into their private emotions. So if you want to find someone else to live with I would completely understand.”
Error shook his head. While the idea of Dream feeling his emotions was pretty weird, he didn't see any reason to not live with him. He saved Error after all. And it wasn't like he knew anyone else here.
Truthfully, he preferred to stay with Dream. The guy was nice and he didn't mind having him around.
“If you'll have me, then I don't mind living with you. I'm just sorry for causing you more trouble.” He said.
Dream smiled. It was warm and bright. “It's no trouble at all, Error.”
Core grinned. “Then it's settled.”
They glanced at Error. “I hope you have a good night. Well, what passes for night here.”
He nodded. “You too, Core. And thanks for the help.”
“Of course.” They said.
Error started to make his way out of the office. Now that Core mentioned it, he was exhausted. It had been a pretty crazy day.
“Bye Core.” Dream said with a wave.
“Farewell Dream.” Core said and then vanished.
Error doubted he would ever grow used to that. Core definitely was quite the oddity.
Once outside, Error sighed. It was a long way back to Dream's place. He really didn't want to walk all the way back.
Dream looked at him. “If you don't mind it. I could teleport us there since you seem to be rather exhausted.”
He nodded. “Go ahead. Do your thing.”
Dream nodded and quickly grabbed Error. He jumped slightly at the touch, but was able to stop himself from pulling away.
Within a second, they were back to standing in Dream's living room. Dream immediately let him go, and Error felt like he could breathe again.
He wondered how long it would take for him to grow used to touch. He was already sick of feeling like he was dying at the smallest of physical contact. He would have to find a way to work on it. Maybe ask Dream to help. Though, that would require admitting that to Dream. Even if Dream suspected it, he wasn't sure he was ready to tell him yet. It was rather embarrassing to admit.
Dream looked at him. “You alright?”
He nodded. “Yeah. I'm better than ever.”
It felt odd to lie, when he knew Dream could very clearly feel the truth. But he had said to act as usual, so he'd do just that.
“That's good.” Dream, didn't acknowledge the lie in the slightest. Simply playing along like he said he would.
Dream gestured to the room around them. “Well, this is my home. Though you already knew that. Feel free to treat it as your own. There's food in the pantry and fridge. Feel free to eat anything you like. And if you need anything, don't be afraid to ask.”
“Will do.” Error said.
Dream walked over to the door and hung up his cloak on one of the hooks near it. “Are you hungry? I could make some eggs real fast.”
Error shook his head. “Truthfully, I'm just tired.”
“Fair. It's been quite the eventful day.” He walked past Error towards the hallway.
He stopped before a door next to the stairs. “This will be your room.”
Error followed him inside. The room was small, but cozy. It had a bed, a dresser, one window with the curtains currently drawn, and a desk with a lamp on it. All in all, it was pretty nice.
“Sorry if it's a bit small. The other guest room is a bit of a mess.” Dream said.
“It's fine. I like the cozy feel of it.” Error walked over to the bed. When was the last time he slept in anything but the cold white ground. He ran his hand over the covers. It was soft.
Dream smiled. “I'm glad you like it.”
He shuffled nervously. “I was thinking tomorrow that I could give you a proper tour of the city. And maybe while we're out, you can get some new clothes and any other necessities that you need.”
Error looked at his clothes, which were pretty ragged, and nodded. “Sounds like a plan to me.”
“All right. Then see you tomorrow.” Dream said, walking to the door.
“Goodnight Dream.” Error said.
Dream froze and looked back at him with a smile. “Goodnight Error.” He then left, leaving Error alone.
Sighing, Error sat on the bed.
“Oh, sweet room.”
“He's living with Dream. That's so cute.”
“Man, are you sure he didn't give you the closet by accident?”
Chimed in the voices.
He had almost forgotten about them. “Could you all shut it? I would like to go to sleep.”
“Ugh, fine.”
“Goodnight Error.”
“Have sweet dreams.”
Then they were gone again.
Laying back on the bed, he stared at the ceiling. This felt like a dream. Part of him was afraid if he went to sleep he'd wake to find himself back in that white place. That all this was a dream. That he was still trapped.
He rolled over onto his side. No, this was real. Dream will wake him up tomorrow and they'll explore the city together. He really hoped so. Holding tightly to that hope, Error slowly drifted off to sleep.

“See, it's perfectly safe.” He said with a confident smile. Only for that smile to die as he felt that power surge wildly around him. Wrapping itself around his body.
His sockets widened in horror as he realized his mistake too late. He looked back.
“No! Ge-”
Error sat up in his bed gasping. What was that? A dream? A memory? He tried to recall it, but already it was slipping away. Until the space it occupied in his mind was blank once more.
Error sighed. Well, whatever that was, it was gone now. Best to not dwell on it. It was probably just a stupid nightmare, nothing more.
The clock on the desk read seven o'clock in the morning. Rubbing his face, he slipped out of bed. Might as well get up, not like he was getting anymore sleep after that.
Noticing a mirror on the wall, he looked at his reflection. To put it mildly, he looked like complete shit.
Large bags under his sockets. His clothes were disheveled and wrinkled. He probably smelled too. Not much he could do about it. These were the only clothes he had.
Sighing, he did his best to fix his clothes. After a minute of fiddling with them, he gave up. This was as good as they were going to get. He couldn't wait to go shopping with Dream and get some actual clean clothes.
Fixing his jacket, he heard a small thunk as something hit the ground. Looking down, he saw a pair of round glasses. The frames were a bright red that stood out against the carpet.
“Huh?” He thought as he bent down and picked them off the floor. “Are these mine?” He wondered. Had to be. They were in his jacket, so obviously they were his.
He tried them on. He blinked in surprise. Suddenly, everything came into focus. He could actually see further than a few feet away now. He hadn't really cared about it earlier, since he just thought his eyelights had been adjusting to the outside still. But nope, turns out he was just blind as shit.
He looked back at the mirror and frowned. “Oh, hell no.” He thought. He looked like a silly little nerd in these. No way, he was wearing them. Quickly he snatched them from his face. Everything fell out of focus again. The door was nothing but a colored blur, only the things right near him were in focus.
He stared at the glasses. Which was it? Did he want to be basically blind or did he want to look dumber than he already was.
Gritting his teeth, he placed the glasses back on. Whatever, not like Dream could think any lower of him anyways. He'll just have to live with looking like a nerd.
He jumped slightly at a knock on the door.
“Error? Are you up?” He could hear Dream's muffled voice from the other side.
He shot one last look at his reflection. Welp, he wasn't going to get any better than this disaster.
Sighing, he called out. “Yeah, I'm awake.”
“Okay. Come out once you're ready. I hope you're hungry for pancakes.” Dream called through the door.
Food. God, he was starving.
Error quickly pulled the blanket over the bed in an attempt to make it. It looked like the blanket gave up and died, leaving its wrinkled body half draped over the bed. It would have to do. Hopefully, Dream wasn't bothered by the slight mess. He then exited his room, closing the door behind him.
From his left wafted a sweet smell. He supposed that was the way to the kitchen. Stepping from the hallway, he headed left, following his noise. Until he arrived at a fairly large kitchen.
A table sat to the side, two large counters with a stovetop oven between them stood in the back of the room. And an island in the middle with two tall stools for sitting. Finally, there was a window letting in light from the nonexistent sky outside. All in all, not bad.
Standing at the stove was a skeleton. Error froze. Who was this? Dream hadn't mentioned anyone else living here.
They were humming to themselves as they flipped a pancake expertly. They turned around to set another plate on the middle island, only to stop at the sight of Error.
“Uh, hi.” Error said, holding up a hand in an awkward wave.
The skeleton grinned at him. They wore a blue bandana around their neck. Their eyelights were blue as well. And they had a scar over their left socket.
Wiping their hands on their apron, they approached him. “Well, you must be Error. Nice to meet ya. I'm Sans but everyone around here calls me Blue.”
Blue held out a hand to him. Error winced. Yet another dreaded handshake. Was this just a thing people did? Touch each other as soon as they meet and such. The idea was wholly strange to him.
Blue frowned slightly. Giving a nervous chuckle, he asked. “You do know what a handshake is, right?”
Error frowned. Great, now he was making himself a fool again. Could he have at least one good first impression? Was that too much to ask for? Error gritted his teeth. Fine. It was one little touch. He could do this. He slowly reached out his hand. His body tensing the closer his hand got to Blue's. Then finally he made contact. Nope, no. He couldn't do it. He quickly snatched his hand away.
Blue pulled his hand back and rubbed at his neck. “Sorry. Did I do something wrong?”
“No, it's fine. It's nice to meet you, Blue.” He quickly said, trying to keep his voice from shaking. He didn't want to make the guy feel bad for his problems.
The smell of something burning filled the air. “Umm. I think your pancake is burning.” Error said.
“Shoot!” Blue cried out in a panic as he quickly returned to the stove. Sadly the pancake was completely black on one side.
“Oops.” He said sadly as he tossed it into the garbage bin.
He wondered if this was a friend of Dream's. It was the only thing that made sense. “Though, what friend is making pancakes for someone this early in the morning?” He wondered.
He studied Blue, as he went about ladling in another bit of batter into the pan. He wore an apron that said ‘kiss the cook’ and was humming happily to himself.
“Maybe a lover then?” He felt a twinge of irritation at that thought. He shook his head. Why did he care who Dream dates, he just met the guy.
Crossing his arms, he asked. “So are you Dream's boyfriend then?”
Blue froze, only to immediately burst into laughter. “Me? And Dream?” He wheezed, bending over as he tried to breathe. “Oh heavens no. Dream is my best friend. I just keep an eye out for him. The guy refuses to properly take care of himself. So I step in to make sure he is eating well and everything. He is quite stubborn about it. But I keep telling him that no one can survive solely on take out and Grillby’s, but he disagrees.”
Error relaxed at that. He hated how he felt almost relieved by that answer.
“What are you two talking about?” Dream asked, as he walked into the room. He gave Blue a pointed look.
Blue grinned as he went back to flipping pancakes on the stove. “Oh nothing. I was just telling Error that you need me to play caretaker for ya.”
Dream blushed and stomped over to Blue. “I do not. You're the one always barging in like you own the place.”
Blue chuckled. “Well, why shouldn't I? Not like you use this kitchen anyways.”
Dream rolled his eyelights at that. “I eat perfectly well. Thank you.”
Blue placed the now done pancake on a plate and looked to Dream. His hands on his hips. “Right. So what did you eat for dinner last night?”
Dream froze. His eyelights darted away. “I ate, uh. Shit, fine. I forgot to eat dinner. But that proves nothing.”
Blue gave him a smug look, that clearly said he thought otherwise.
Spotting Error, Dream's shoulders slumped. “Please, let's not do this in front of my guest.”
Blue shrugged. “Fair enough. I'll let you off easy this time. Just make sure to eat up. Both of you. Got it.”
Both nodded and sat down. He quickly finished making the final plate and when all three were filled he brought them over to the table. He then brought over butter and a multitude of syrups to choose from.
Error eyed his plate of pancakes hungrily.
Blue chuckled as he sat down. “Go ahead. Have as many as you like.”
Error began to devour his food with no hesitation. Not caring how he looked as he hunkered over his plate, quickly shoveling pancakes into his mouth. Barely stopping to breath as he ate.
“Nice to see someone enjoy my cooking so much.” Blue said with a smile, as he took a bite from his own plate.
Dream chuckled and began cutting his pancake into small pieces. His posture was stiff and proper as he slowly ate.
“The pancakes are amazing as always. My compliments to the chef.” He said, giving Blue a wink.
Blue giggled. “Why thank you.”
“Yeah thanks for the food. It's the best thing I've ever tasted.” Error said between bites. Technically this was the first thing he remembered eating, but Blue didn't need to know that.
Blue practically beamed at the compliment. “Glad you like it so much. I'll be sure to make more for ya at some point.” He chuckled as Error demolished yet another pancake.
“You might want to slow down Error. Don't want you getting sick.” Dream said, shooting him a slightly concerned look.
Error stopped. Right, he hadn't eaten in awhile. Best to not to over do it.
Dream stared at him, his sockets widening. “Huh? I just noticed, are you wearing glasses?” he asked.
Error immediately felt a blush crawl over his face. “Yeah. I found them in my jacket. Pretty cool, right?”
He truly wished he would just die right now. Cool? Cool!? And Dream knew he was just covering up his embarrassment. He truly was an idiot. He buried his head in his hands and let out a suffering groan.
“Hey, it's alright. I think they suit you quite well. You look quite dashing in them.” Dream tried to placate him.
Sighing, he lifted his head. “We both know that's a lie. I look like a fucking nerd.”
Dream shook his head. “That's not true at all. I love how they look on you. You look really cute in them.” A slight blush crawled up Dream's cheeks.
Error looked down, as he felt his face get hot at the compliment. “Then I guess I'll keep wearing them if you like them that much.” He muttered, trying to hide his blush.
At that moment, he heard Blue attempt to stifle a snicker. He held a hand over his mouth as his shoulders shook with his nearly unrestrained laughter.
“Sorry, sorry. Don't mind me. I just thought of something funny, that's all.” He said, turning away from the two of them.
Dream frowned. “Well, best get cleaned up and ready to go.” He stood and started to gather the various plates. A small blush still visible on his cheeks.
Error quickly stood. “Right, I'll help.” He joined Dream and started to help clean up. Anything to escape the current situation.
While placing the dishes in the dishwasher, Dream looked at Blue. “Do you want to come? We're just going shopping while I give Error a tour.”
Blue waved him off. “Nah, I don't want to intrude.”
Dream placed another plate on the rack. “You wouldn't be intruding. Besides, it would help to have another person there to help out.”
Blue grinned at him. “You just want me to carry the shopping bags. Fine, I see what a sham our friendship is. You only care for my muscles.”
Dream rolled his eyelights. “You don't even have muscles, dumbass.”
Blue gasped. “How dare you! I worked hard on these bad boys.” He flexed an arm, showing nothing but thin bones.
“Wow. I'm so impressed.” Dream said sarcastically.
Blue beamed proudly. “As you should be.”
Closing the dishwasher and starting it, Dream turned to Blue. “Seriously Blue. I mean it. I would appreciate your help. We need a body guard of sorts. Error-” Dream paused as his nonexistent brows furrowed. “Error doesn't do well with crowds since he was stuck so long in a completely empty place. So if you could, I would be ever so thankful.”
Dream bowed to Blue, who only shook his head. “Come on. None of that formal stuff. Of course I'll help you out. What are friends for?”
Dream grinned and ran up to Blue, tackling him into a hug. “Thank you. I owe you. Whatever you want, I'll do it.”
Blue chuckled. “I'll hold ya to that.”
Dream let Blue go and turned to Error. “Well then, are we ready to go? Or do you need to prepare first?”
Error shook his head. “Nope. I'm as prepared as can be. So go ahead and show me the sights.”
Blue cheered. “Let's go!” He then raced from the house.
Dream watched after him with a chuckle. “He's a good guy. A big ol softy at heart. A bit loud and excitable, but kind and caring.” He looked over at Error. “He can be a bit much, but I hope the two of you can get along.”
Sticking his hands in his pockets, Error gave him a smile. “Yeah. I already like him. He makes great pancakes.”
Dream gave him a wiry smile. “Good to know the way to your heart is through food.” He shot Error mischievous look. “I will have to keep that in mind.”
Error gave Dream a smug grin as he crossed his arms. “Good thing I have nothing to worry about then. Since, judging by his earlier comments, you can't cook worth shit. So sadly, whatever machinations you have planned are doomed to failure it seems.”
“I do not suck at cooking.” Dream huffed, crossing his arms.
“Well, guess you'll have to cook for me some time and prove it.” Error said, leaning down and meeting Dream's eyelights. Challenging him.
Staring unwavering into his eyelights, Dream accepted the challenge. “Guess I will.”
Both stood just a hair away from each other. Neither refusing to back down.
Blue poked his head through the doorway. “Are you two coming or what? Hurry up slow pokes, the day is wasting.”
Error jumped back slightly and felt a blush crawl over his face. Quickly, he collected himself. Or at least tried to. It felt like his soul was trying to escape his ribcage at the moment.
“Sorry Blue. We're coming.” Dream called out. Completely unaffected, like nothing happened.
Of course, that's because nothing did happen. Nothing at all. What was he even thinking about? He was being ridiculous.
Dream shot a look over at Error. “Don't get it twisted. Our bet is still on, and I am definitely winning.” He said, as he turned and walked away.
Error froze. “Bet?”
“What are you talking about? We made no bet. Besides, what would even be the prize?” He shouted after Dream.
Dream looked back with a sly smile. “You're heart, remember?” And quickly left through the door.
Error stood in shock. He could feel his face growing warmer as he stared at the now empty doorway. That man was going to be the death of him.
“What is wrong with me?” He thought, as he tried to shake out the stupid thoughts filling his skull.
“Well I can list multiple things wrong with you.” Piped in a voice. Error groaned. He did not need them talking to him right now.
Ignoring the comment, he made his way to the front door. On the other side, Dream and Blue waved to him. He couldn't help but smile. Despite it all, it felt nice. Like he belonged here, if only a little.

Chapter Text
“And of course, we saved the best for last. The crowning jewel of our beloved Omega Timeline.” Blue said, as he over dramatically gestured to their final tour stop.
Error simply stared in disbelief. “A park?”
He didn't know what he thought this amazing thing Blue had been building up to the whole tour was going to be, but it certainly hadn't been this.
Blue grinned. “Exactly. Isn't it amazing? Our coders worked hard to get everything right.”
Error sort of got why it was a big deal. Here, in this naturally empty space, there was no plant life or dirt. Sure residents kept potted plants around, but this was an actual piece of nature.
Truthfully, it looked horribly out of place, like someone made a whole park on this one spot and didn't bother to finish the rest of the surrounding area. Dirt paths snaked over green grass. Trees and bushes were speckled throughout. A few patches of wildflowers stood proudly among the greenery.
Error had to look away. The large amount of colors were starting to hurt his eyelights.
“Everything okay?” Dream asked, noting his pained expression.
Error shook his head. “It's nothing. Really cool place you guys made here. Y'know with all the trees and stuff.” He trailed off.
He had no idea where he was going with this.
Dream smiled. “It is quite amazing. It's actually my favorite place here.”
Error winced. Hopefully Dream wasn't too hurt by his lack of enthusiasm. “Well it's great. Really nice and what not.”
Dream shook his head. “You don't have to like it, Error.”
Error sighed, and ran a hand over his skull. “It's not that I hate it. It just looks weird. It sticks out. Also the excess of colors is giving me a headache.”
Dream's sockets widened. “Oh right. I forgot. I'm sorry, Error. We can go somewhere else now if that will help.”
Error smiled at him. “Yeah, actually that would help.”
“Too bad you don't like the park, it's a wonderful hang out spot.” Said Blue, trailing after them.
“I'd rather hang out at Dream's place than there. Less colors and annoying people.” Error froze as he realized how that sounded. He quickly turned to look back at Blue. “I didn't mean you. You're great, it's just everyone else that sucks.”
Blue laughed and waved him off. “I knew what you meant, no worries. You don't seem like much of a people person.” Blue grinned. “Though, I'm quite happy to know that I'm one the few people you can stand to be around.”
Error chuckled. “Of course, you make the best pancakes.”
Blue snickered and walked up to Dream. “Might wanna be careful, if this keeps up I might just steal him from ya.”
Dream chuckled and gave Blue a smirk. “You're free to try.”
Blue held up his hands. “Oh? Well if you're that confident, then I surrender immediately. I know when I'm beat. Besides, he's not my type.” He shot a glance back at Error. “No offense.”
Error chuckled. “None taken.”
Blue was quite the jokester. Though sometimes Error had a hard time getting what he meant at times. Steal him? What did that have to do with anything? Whatever it was had caused a small blush to bloom over Dream's cheeks as he walked.
Error looked away. It would be rude to stare.
They continued to walk until they were back on the bustling city streets once more.
Dream lead them down the many twisting and turning streets to what seemed to be a store. Judging by the assortment of mannequins in the windows wearing dazzling outfits. Error would bet it was a place that sold clothes. After all, Dream had said he would take Error clothes shopping after the tour.
Dream looked back at Error. “We'll try this place first. They have a wide array of clothing so hopefully you'll find something you like.”
Error nodded. “Sounds good. Lets-” he paused. Wait, he didn't have any money. How was he going to buy this? He definitely wasn't going to make Dream pay for it all. Though he really needs new clothes. “Maybe I could pay him back.” He thought. The idea didn't make him feel any better about it.
“Don't worry about paying.” Dream interrupted his thoughts. He couldn't help but wonder if Dream had felt his worry and decided to intervene. It was a bit embarrassing to know he really knew everything Error felt at any given moment.
Dream looked away from him. “Core will waive your bill. Most people who arrive here don't have money for necessary things like food and clothes. So Core usually pays for such things until new residents can get back on their feet.”
Huh? That was pretty kind of them. Maybe he was a bit harsh on the gray brat. They seemed to genuinely care for those in their city. To go out of their way to help those in need, even at a cost. True selflessness.
He looked up at Dream, who was studying him. “Well that's great. Good to know. I'll be sure to not hold back then.” He grinned as he placed his hands behind his head.
Dream shook his head and sighed.
Blue chuckled. “You're definitely the type to take someone's hospitality for granted.”
“Of course. Gotta take advantage while I have it.” Error said with a wink.
Blue snickered. “Best not let Core hear ya speak like that or they might prank ya for your trouble.”
“Come on, you two. Enough joking about.” Dream said, opening the door to the shop. Despite his chastising words, his tone was light and playful.
Error nodded. “Yeah, I definitely want out of these rags as soon as possible.” He followed after Dream with Blue just behind him.
The store was much bigger than he expected. Rows upon rows of clothes stretched into the horizon. Fancy signs in swirling script told what each row held.
To the side sat a massive counter with a clerk standing behind it. It looked to be a goat monster of some sort. They waved cheerfully at the sound of the bell marking their entrance. “Hello. Feel free to look around. And if you're looking for anything specific, then feel free to come and ask me. I'll help you as best I can.”
“Thanks.” Error said stiffly.
[Geez, Error. We really need to work on your people skills. This is just pathetic.] A voice commented.
“Shut it.” Error whispered furiously under his breath. Seriously, why did the voices in his head have to be so annoying? Why couldn't they just torment him like normal imaginary voices should. He much would prefer that over this stupidity any day.
“Well, wanna look around.” Dream asked.
“Absolutely.” Error said with too much enthusiasm. He then chose a random aisle and started walking. Dream and Blue quickly followed after him.
So half an hour was wasted walking aisle after aisle. He had no idea what he liked. He didn't even know anything about fashion. Part of him wanted to just grab clothes closest to the ones he's already wearing and call it a day. But the other part wanted to actually try and find something. New clothes for a new life.
“Would you like us to help?” Blue finally asked.
Hanging his head, Error gave up. “Yes. That would be appreciated.”
Blue jumped excitedly and started grabbing clothes like he already had an outfit in mind. Dream nodded and walked off to peruse a rack of jackets.
“Alright, Error. I think you'll like this.” Called Blue from a few aisles over.
Error was quickly whisked away to the changing rooms. Blue stuffing his arms with clothes and telling him to try them on.
Some outfits were to his liking. He found the more loose fitting clothing to be miles more comfortable than anything that stuck to his bones like a skin.
With this new piece of info, Blue rushed back out to gather more clothes. The second round went much smoother. Baggy shirts and pants. Overly large coats. Most were in black or white since too many colors still hurt to look at.
The one exception being a dark blue jacket and a blue scarf. Putting it on felt strange. Almost familiar. Like a missing piece falling into place. Had he liked wearing scarves? He wasn't sure. All he knew was that weight around his neck made him feel something. It felt like sorrow or maybe relief. He almost didn't want to take it off.
After gathering a good amount of clothes for day to day wear and some pajamas to wear to bed, Dream finally arrived.
His head bowed, he offered the neatly folded stack to Error. “I tried my best to find something you might like.”
Error gave him a reassuring smile as he gently took the stack. “I'm sure it will be great.” Dream blushed slightly and stepped back.
Error went into the dressing room. The outfit was simple. Similar to others he had. But just slightly different to make it unique.
A large white jacket that was so long the trim of it was just above his knees. Though it wasn't too big on him, which made him think that was simply a part of the intended design. Next was a black turtle neck shirt. It wasn't super loose, but it wasn't overly tight either. A comfortable in-between. Long black slacks that stopped just above his ankle. And finally white tennis shoes. He worried a bit about how dirty they would get, but he had to admit they looked good.
Looking at himself in the mirror, he got that odd feeling again. Like this was familiar.
Suddenly he saw a red slash over his chest, staining the white coat and dripping into small puddles on the ground. He blinked and the vision was gone. Was that a memory? That couldn't be right. Because if it was, then he was sure he should be long dead. What was that then?
Shaking his head, he decided to leave the room before more weird visions came to him. He was already hearing voices, he definitely didn't need to start seeing shit that wasn't there.
Emerging, he was met with applause as Blue clapped and whistled. “Now that's a good look on you.” He said.
Dream approached tentatively, his hands behind his back.
“Well? What do you think?” Error asked, holding out his arms to show off the outfit.
Dream hummed thoughtfully. “It's good. But I think it's missing one last thing.” Suddenly he took his hands from behind him. A flash of red entered Error's vision, as Dream gently wrapped a bright red scarf around his neck.
Stepping back, he seemed to study his work. “I thought so. Red really does suit you.” He said smiling.
Error felt a blush crawl over his face. “Uh, thanks. I- uh, like it a lot.”
“I'm glad.” Dream said.
“Oh Dream's right. That ties it together really well. Also it matches your glasses.” Blue Chimed in. “You should go check it out in the mirror.”
Error followed his advice. Silently praying for no weird visions this time.
All that greeted him was his own reflection. Dream had been right, the red scarf really did suit him. He touched it. It was soft under his hands. In that moment, an ache bloomed in his soul. “This is me.” He thought, staring at his reflection. The person staring back felt so strange, yet familiar. He smiled. The reflection smiled back.
He quickly changed out of them and back into his tattered clothes. With the new clothes in hand, he rejoined Blue and Dream.
As they were heading to the counter, Error stopped. Sitting on a series of shelves were gloves.
“Might help with the whole touch thing.” He thought. Calling out to Blue and Dream to wait. He quickly picked out a few sets he liked. He then quickly joined the other two. Neither questioning his odd additional accessories.
Seeing the price for everything nearly made Error faint. He would eternally be grateful to Core for taking this for him. Who knew clothes were so expensive.
Dream, Blue, and Error walked out, each carrying bags filled with clothes. Mission success. Now Error could toss these rags the first chance he got.
He couldn't help but smile. Today had been fun. He watched Blue and Dream banter as they walked. He could get used to this life. As strange as it was, it wasn't so bad.
Back in his room, Error laid on his bed. He stared at the red scarf held in his hand. Why was it so familiar? Why did his soul ache at the sight of it? And what was that vision?
He turned over and sighed. His mind supplied no answers to his questions. Sitting up, he set the scarf on his desk. Guess it was just another weird mystery that was his life. Hopefully one day he'd figure it out.
Turning off the light, Error laid in bed. Still looking at the red scarf. Wondering how it connected to his missing past. Thinking of the vision, he almost didn't want to know. Many hours later, Error finally fell asleep to worried thoughts of a past he no longer remembered.
