Chapter 1: New guy

Notes:

I’ll have you all know that I’ve never seen or read the other movies or books.
I’ve only seen the first movie, so there’s all I know in this book from the first movie.
I hope this is still very good, and I’m still gonna try and make three books of this.

Newt has always been my favorite character from the maze Runner. So I want to write a story about him, where he’s the main character, this is an AU just about him.

Will be in different to people’s point of view of course. I find that fun, but I hope you guys all enjoy this, I enjoyed writing it!

Chapter Text

Chapter one
(Thomas)

I come dragging out of the maze as I do every day, still haven’t found anything
I come out with Minho, and as we do, we see everyone crowded around the Box, someone wouldn’t have come up yet. It’s not the next month yet…

I jog over to the crowd, and push my way through to see.
When I look down into the Box, I see a boy waking up. It looks as if they thought he wasn’t going to wake up and had sent Newt down into the Box to help him up.
Newt stepped back a bit while the boy sat up. (He looked like he was three or four years younger than Newt)

The Greeny looked up at Newt, “Newt?”
Everyone looked at Newt. And Newt only said, “Welcome to the glaze, Greeny.”

I pull Newt out of the Box, and see that the Greeny has a backpack.
Newt pulls the Greeny out by the arm, who stumbles, and grabs Newt’s to study himself.

“Newt, Why do you keep looking at me like that?“ Says the Greeny.
“Wat do ya mean?” Newt answers, giving him an uneasy look.
“Like you wish I’d stop.”
“Stop wat Greeny?” Newt asks.
“Well,“ said the Greeny, “Just that you look as if you thought I was weird.“

Newt turn to me, “Thomas you set him up, won’t ya?”
I nod, “Yeah, sure.”
Newt looks back at the Greeny,”I don’ think ya’re weird.”
The Greeny smiles, “Don’t you know me?”
“Why, should I?” Newt asked.

“Well I am your brother after all.” Newt looks a bit an uneasy and surprised at this. Everyone starts paying more attention now.

“N-no Greeny, I don’ rememba you at all.” Newt says slowly, “How do ya rememba me Greeny?”

“Stop calling me ‘Greeny’.” He says back, “ Don’t know what you mean, I just never forgot my memories I guess. Ha ha ha!” A few others chuckle.

“Here,” I say to Newt, “Do you want me to take him around and talk to him for you?”
“Ye’.” Says Newt, Giving the Greeny Another uneasy look.
“Right,” I say, “come on, Greeny.” And I make my way to the tallest building in the Glade, where Alby talked to me.

“well, can you tell me anything about yourself? Where you came from, who you were, even your name?“ I say, leaning on the railing.
He gives me a look that says ‘ I feel so sorry for you.’ But he says, “yes, I could tell you lots of stuff…… I am Newt’s Brother, and I came here, to get you all out of the maze, if I can.“

Chapter two
(Newt)

“And so he said that he came here to get us all out,” Thomas is telling me, “He says he knows how he’s just getting to know us first or something, waiting I guess.” Thomas smiles at me, “Newt, he says he remembers everything! Well, all but his name, but still, he could be our way out!”

That would be good… I’d like that. A good easy way out… and I wish it didn’t have to be led by him… my brother. The one who makes me feel so very… Weird. Even that isn’t quite the right word either.

Notes:

Short but hope you like it still, would love to hear what you think!

Chapter three
(Thomas)

After I finish telling Newt what the Greeny said, I go to talk to Minho about it, right before we start running.
When I find him, he’s getting ready to run, and he looks up when I jog over.
“Thomas,” he says with a nod, and puts A knife in its sheath.
“Minho,” I answer.
“Finally ready before me?” He jokes, because I always seam to come right on time.
“Heh,” I chuckle,”Yeah, thought I’d try extra hard today,” I nod at him,”Today feels promising.” I say smiling brightly.
He chuckles a bit, “Right, well since you are, let’s get a move on.”
He starts heading to the Maze, but I grab his arm, stopping him.

“Wait,” I say, “I have something to ask you first.“
“Make it quick, don’t make us late bow that we’re early.“ Minho cross’ his arms and tilts his head to listen.

So I tell him everything that the Greeny said, “ He says he can get us out! He has a way Minho!”

Minho says nothing back for a while, “Thomas, who’s to say they didn’t send him to tell us that?”

I shake my head, “why would they do that? Don’t they want us stuck here, forever?“
“I’m just gonna stick to running.“ Is all he says back, and starts walking toward the Maze.

“where is that got you?!“ I yell after him, watching him go, then I follow him, follow him to the Maze.
He waits for me to be next to him, and he pats my shoulder, saying, “ Thomas, I used to think there was a way out, but not after finishing the map of the Maze… But now that we have you, I think we have a chance. Not cuz’a that Greeny, but because of you, Thomas.” He then turns to the Maze as the doors open.
“Thanks Minho.” I say.
“Let’s go!” He says, and he runs into the Maze, I pause a moment to look back at the Glade, and run after him.

Notes:

This chapter was fun to write, and I hope it was fun to read 😄
I would love to hear any thoughts in the comments!

Chapter 4: The Party

Chapter Text

I jog back to the blade with Minho A good bit in front.

Chuck is waiting for us to get back, with one of the Jeffs.
“Hey Thomas,” Says Chuck to me.
“Welcome boys,” Says Jeff, “Frypan’s made somethin’ real nice for to night.”

We had been planning a party for ourselves, and now that we have a Greeny, we might as well use the excuse to throw it for him.
They start as soon as we get there and start our fun, I see the Greeny with Newt, and I see how much they a like.
They’re almost the same! Only the Greeny’s hair is darker of a brown, whereas Newt’s is only dirty blonde, the way they move there heads the same way as well… Maybe they are brothers.

Gally’s talking to Frypan about the food, and spots Me. He makes his way over to me, at least he doesn’t look mad…
“Well Thomas, what do you think of this new Greeny?” He hands me a bowl of… something. (We’re all beyond asking Frypan what the food has in it.)
“I think,” I say taking a bite, “That he could be our way out of the Maze.”
“Huh.” He grunts, “Really?” He looks over at the Greeny,“He makes me feel uncomfortable…”
I tilt my head, “Why’s that?”
Gally looks at me, “Maybe it’s because he says he’s Newt’s brother.”

I cross my arms smiling a bit, “Oh, so it’s because he remembers everything, then is it?”
“Maybe it is.” Gally says giving me a look, “Aren’t you worried he’ll be our ‘Savior’?”

I raise an eyebrow at him, smirking a bit, “What? Instead of me?” I grin, “Here I was thinking you thought of me as a shank, but come to find out that you think of me as a kind of ‘Savior’! Glad you highly of me, Gally.” I say in a snarky tone, but I still chuckle a bit.

“Har har,” he says angrily, “You think you’re so funny… Guess we’ll see soon who gets us out, won’t we?” He struts off to finish the rest of his red soup.

I walk over to talk to Newt, planning on joking with him, but when I see him; he gives me this face, this… horrible expression on his face—not mad, not sad really, just… like a man who’s seen a ghost, and wants to leave that ghost forever, but loves the ghost with all his heart.

He beckons me over with his expression, and I come. He’s with the Greeny. (The Greeny still can’t remember his name.)
“Hey Newt, Greeny.” I say with a polite smile and nod.
“Hey Gally.” Says the Greeny happily. I look behind me to see if Gally had followed me, he hadn’t.
“I’m Thomas,” I say. Newt snorts.
“Oooh!” Says the Greeny, chuckling, “Sorry.”
“What’s new?” I ask him kindly.
“What’s new?” He repeats.

“Yeah.” I say grinning a bit at Newt who looks looks a lot better now than before I came.

“Oh, uh, yes. I guess coming here is ‘what’s new’.” He says returning the kind smile I have been giving him.

“I guess so Greeny,” I say, “I only really got here myself.”

“Really?” He looks as if he’s thinking very hard, “Hasn’t it been a month? I thought it had been! I was trying not to be abnormal.”

Newt tilts his head to the side a bit, “Realie? You were tryin’ to be normal?”
He shook his head a bit, “Well ya failed at dat Greeny.”

“Why don’t you call me by my name Newt?” The Greeny asks Newt.

“I don’ rememba you.” Says Newt sipping out of his cup, “Tell me your name an’ I’ll call ya by et.”

“Well it’s—Wait…” the Greeny says trailing off, “I… Can’t rememba it…”

“It’ll come to you.” I say smiling, seeing how I must have looked when I found I couldn’t remember my name…

After the party I go to bed like everyone else.

Chapter 5: The Mistake

Heehee here I go trying to do a Gally PoV! 😆tell me what u think!

Chapter five
(Gally)

What you should know before I get into what happened after the party is: the Greeny is bad with names. And it’s not just he can’t remember them, but he switches people’s names up. For instance, he calls me, Thomas and Thomas, Gally… it’s annoying to say the least.
But anyway, let’s get into this…

I was sitting on the table that Frypan was at, giving out food. I was just hanging out, talking to Frypan, when the Greeny came over saying, “Hey, can you set up my stuff, and my bed and things, please.”
Frypan smiles at me, we all know that it’s the last Greeny that helps set up the new Greeny’s bed, and that would be Thomas’ job.
“Why me?” I ask.
“Cuz Newt said.” He answers.
“Why?” Had I done something? Was he punishing me for something?
“What do you mean?” The Greeny asks putting his hands on his hips, “Thomas, don’t you think you should do what he—“ but I cut him off, as Frypan chuckles.
“Greeny, I’m not Thomas.” I say calmly.
“Oh…,” he says and looks a bit embarrassed,”Who is he then?” He turns to look around at everyone going off to their beds.

“Him.” I say pointing.
“Oh okay, I’ll try to remember that…,” he nods and starts to leave, but stops and turns back to me, “Who are you then?”
“Gally. Try and remember alright Greeny…” I say kindly.

“Good night Gallay.” He says in his accent, the same one as Newt, but Newt’s is stronger.
I nod to him and goes off to find the real Thomas.

Frypan smiles at me, “He’s a cute little boy.” He shakes his head, “So innocent.”
“Yeah. He is.” I say back, “Strange too…”

“Eh,” Frypan shrugs, “I don’t know… I like ‘im. He’s nice, and makes me think of how you were when you first came out of that box.”

I don’t say anything for a long while,”He claims to know how to get us out…,” I say as I watch his following Thomas to the beds.
“Yeah.” Says Frypan, “That, I don’t get ‘bout’im…”

“Do you think he really has a way out?” I say looking at Frypan again, “I mean, he does say that he just wants to wait a bit first, before telling us how to get out…” I shrug, “Just makes me feel like he doesn’t really have a way.”

It takes Frypan a good while to answer, he looks over at the Greeny, who’s now watching Thomas set up his hammock. Then Frypan slowly looks back at me, “ you have a point there Gally…,”

Chapter 6: Up Early

Notes:

Hey guys!! Hope I’m not updating too slow for you all lol

Chapter Text

Chapter 6
(Thomas)

I finished setting up the Greeny’s hammock, “There,” I say, I’ve never made a hammock before, and I think it looks pretty good!

“Thank you Gally.” He says smiling at his new bed.

I chuckle, will he ever learn, “You’re welcome Greeny. And it’s Thomas, not Gally, Gally’s the guy with the anger issues.” I joke.

“Ugh! I keep doing that!!” He shakes his head, “I’m sorry, I’ve always done that…”

***

In good morning I get up, and just sit in my hammock, waiting till the last minute to get up and get ready.

The Greeny comes over to me when he gets up. (His bed is next to mine and Chuck’s.)

“Morning.“ He says smiling, and rubbing his eyes.

“Morning. Looks like you made it through the night.” I smile.

“Heh,” He chuckles, “I guess so.” He smiles and looks around the Gade, like he loves this place very much, and would like to stay.

“C’mon,” I say, getting out of my hammock and pulling on my leather vest over my shirt, “let’s get something to eat, I’m hungry.”

He knows and follows me. Frypan is always one of the first ones up, because he has to feed the Runners before they run. So he has to get up and make the food ready for us, early.

“Good morning, Thomas, Greeny.” Says Frypan Smiling and giving us balls, “Up Bright and early on your first day, are we Greeny?”

The Greeny smiles, “ I only woke up because someone was so loud, moving around…“ He chuckles giving me a fake side eye And elbow and me in the arm. I laugh.

“sorry,“ I say still laughing a bit.

Minho Is there too, and he’s smiling at us, while he eats his sauce and beans.
“Morning.“I say nothing to my fellow Runner.

“morning,” he nods to us in greeting and looks over at the Maze, finishing his food, “once you’re done, we’ll go.”

I know, but see he’s not looking at me and can’t see that I know it, I say, “all right.“

“Gally’s up too.” Says Frypan, “ he’s hanging out by the woods.” He points a Gally, who is standing on his own, looking at some trees, not doing anything, just looking.

“is he okay?“ I ask.

“I think so,” Frypan frowns, “Hard to know with Gally sometimes…”

I nod and straighten my leather vest, “Guess you’re right, I’m gonna go talk to him…”

Minho eyes my, “Make it quick Thomas, I won’t wait for you.”

I nod, “Yeah, okay.” I jog my way over to Gally. He’s standing there looking out into the wood, he looks like he’s waiting for a package to arrive… How do I know what that looks like? I don’t remember watching someone do it, or remember doing it myself… So how do I know what that looks like?

“Hey, Gally, you okay?” I say, stoping next to him.

He turns and looks at me as if he hadn’t heard me coming, and didn’t think anyone would be up yet. We just look at each other for a while, we both don’t smile, but we’re not frowning either.

Finally he says, “Hey Thomas.”

“Hey,” I say, now a bit worried for him, “Are you okay?”

“Just fine.” He states, in the kind of voice that one would use when they’re not all that fine and their also a bit upset with you as well. He looks past me at the Greeny, “Why’s the Greeny up? They make him a Runner too an’ not tell me?”

I cross my arms, “Still smoldering about that?” I was made a Runner because I would always follow Minho into the Maze and wouldn’t leave, they thought it a good idea to make me a Runner because they knew I wouldn’t stop so there was no point in trying to stop me.(Aaannd mostly because Minho liked me.) Newt and Minho and a few others had made me one without Gally there. He’s been mad ever since.

He crosses his arms too, puts his chin up a bit, and eyes me, “Humph, does that mean they DID?” I know he knows they didn’t, he’s just making a point to say he doesn’t think I ever should have been a Runner.

I roll my eyes and shack my head, “No,” I look over my shoulder at the Greeny, “I guess I woke him up when I got up.”

“Huh,” He watches Minho jog over to the Maze, “Better get a move on Thomas, he’ll leave without you, you know.”

“Yeah. He would…” I smile at Gally, “See you Gally.”

“Yeah.” He answers and turns back to the wood for a second and makes his way to Frypan while I run up to Minho at the doors.

Chapter 7: Cookin'

Chapter Text

Chapter seven
(Newt)

“‘E wants to do wat?” I ask stepping back a bit.

“He would like to take a stab at cookin’” Frypan smiles, “And he wants to know if it’s okay.”

“I mean… I don’ mind, but—wel’, we have a good chef al’ready—Don’ see the point in a’ new one.” I shrug and grin at Frypan.

“I’ll just tell ‘Im that you dont’t mind then.” Frypan happily walks off with a bit of a spring in his step, just as he gets out of ear-shot the Greeny walks up behind me.

“Hey Newt.”

“Hey Greeny.” I nod at him in greeting.

“Can we move my hammock to be next to yours?” He asks like it’s the easiest thing in the world to do.

“Um,” I don’t really want my brother in a bed next to mine… It’s not that I don’t like him, the Greeny’s nice enough… It’s just that, well… the fact that he likes to say he’s my brother makes me uneasy…, “Thomas worked hard to set up was ye’ve got Greeny.” (An’ he did! It’s not the easiest thing to set up a hammock, I don’t know if you’ve done it before, but it’s not as easy as a pro my make it look…)

“Yeah, I know… But I’d just feel more comfortable next to my brother, ye’ know?”

If he even IS my brother…, “No,” I state.

“Okay… I guess it is only the nights anyway. And Thomas and Chuck are nice…” He looks to the ground.

“Greeny, Frypan says you want to start cookin’?” I ask, smiling at bit, he’s so cute even though he looks to be about my age.

“Yeah,” He nods and smiles, “I do!”

“Wel’ I’ve told Frypan it’s al’right.” I say, “Just listen to Frypan, an’ try not to make us nothin’ we don’ like, ‘right Greeny?” We both smile.

“Thanks Newt,” He says, and gives me a short hug, and makes his way over to Frypan who’s giving out food to everyone for lunch.

Chapter 8: The Dream...

Chapter Text

Chapter 8
(Newt)

I look up and see a very beautiful girl looking down at me, smiling at me… I then see the seen change…

I’m walking in a hall like I always do, and I walk past a young boy who looks to be about 10 or 11… He smiles at me as he always does, every day…

As I walk I have many girls following me, one is holding my hand, laughing and talking with me… The other girls are also giggling at what we’re saying…

I feel happy and at peace… This feels like home… I feel more peaceful than I’ve been in a very long while…

The seen changes again…

Me and that girl—the one who’d held my hand—We’re sitting, smiling at each other… She’s holding both my hands and whispering to me things—very nice, sweet things… then she’s leaning forward….and we…

Kiss…

That’s the dream I’ve been having every night since my brother came. It’s so nice, but yet so… weird, witch isn’t quite the right word… I’ve had dreams like this before, ones that felt like they must be memories and not just dreams, I have a few written down because I forget them every time…

I have that dream of this girl most nights, the kiss is so nice… So light, as peaceful and calm, gentle… I like the feeling of the kiss more than the girl or the kiss it’s self…

Chapter 9: The New Comer

Chapter Text

Chapter 9
(Thomas)

It doesn’t feel like it but I guess it’s already been a whole month. I only remember about it because when Minho and I get back we see everyone standing around the box, I glance at him and we jog over.

We get there, and look into the box after pushing our way to the front of the crowd of boys. I lean over and see… It’s a girl…
Gally jumps down into the box to help her out of the box. Both Jeffs are ready to help, just when she wakes, sitting up, making us all jump.

She starts to hacking, Gally steps away from her so as to not get sprayed with spit. She looks at Gally when she’s done, and looks for a long time, and she then turns her head to look at us all. We’re all lookin’ at her.

“Newton?” She says getting to her feet.

Chapter 10: Brother's New Name

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Chapter 10
(Newt)

I glance at my brother who’s next to me, he smiles at me and that makes me worried. Who was she? Who were we…
But what I say to the girl is, “Welcome to the Glade, Greeny.” I grab her arm and pull her out of the box.

As soon as she is out she grabs me and pulls me into a big hug, squeezing me tight, “Oh! Newt I was so worried you’d died!”

A few of the guys chuckle as I push her away, “Ahem, um… I have no clue who ye are?”

She blinks, “Oh! Ugh! I forgot!!” She pulls her backpack out of the box.

I look at my brother, “You’ll get her set up now won’t ye? Get her bed ready, she’ll need a hammock.”

He leans forward and whispers in my ear—I am very glad he hadn’t said this out loud for all to hear— “Can’t she just use your bed?”

I push his head away from my ear, I feel my face get a bit hot, he must have been a thing…, “That’s not funny!” I say sternly.

He chuckles and shrugs, “I’ll take care of her.” She follows my brother but keeps looking back at me.

Gally pulls himself out of the box, “What was that all about?” He says smirking at me.

“It’s not wat ye think.”

He chuckles with everyone else, “Whatever you say, Newt.” They all chuckle again and I feel Thomas teasingly brush my shoulder with his while he walks by.

***

Me, my brother, Gally, Thomas, and a few of the other guys like Zart are all sitting around, chilling. We aren’t talking, just hanging out enjoying being with one another.

My brother looks up randomly and says, “I want a name.”

“Wat do ye’ mean?” I ask.

“Yeah,” says Winston, “‘What do ye’ mean’?” A few of the others chuckle at him making fun of my accent.

“You can’t just keep calling me ‘Greeny’” My brother says.

And so we all started to try and think op names for him, things like this: Joel, John, Steve, Jeff (This came from Chuck, though he was joking because we already have two Jeffs.) and Brian. He didn’t like any of them.

I’m not really very sure how this ended up happening but after my brother left, they all started trying to think of more names for him again.

“How about, Courage?” Asks Winston, smiling at me.

The other boys chuckle, I’m not sure of the joke, then, Gally says, “Or, Motherly.”

They all laugh at me, though I have no idea what the joke is.
Thomas smiles and lightly elbows Gally, “That’s him, though really.” They all chuckle.

My brother is anything but ‘Motherly’, so I don’t see why the joke is so funny—and why are they laughing at me if they’re making fun of—Oh… They’re trying to come up with a name for my brother by using words they think are like me.
“How about, Glorious?”
“Or Modest?”
“Humble?”
“Caring, maybe?”
I don’t even think they’re trying to find names for my brother anymore, just trying to flatter me…

I know that I’m blushing, but no one was paying that any mind, till my brother walks back over, “Newt, why is your face all red?”
Ho, that’s the best thing he could have said… They all start to laugh—Hard.

“Yeh, I’m’al right…,”

One of the guys still laughing asks, “No, Newt, tell us, why is your face all red?”

“Well, I’m standin’ here, listenin’ to a convocation like dat, why, your face’d be red too.” I say.
They all chuckle, and Thomas says, “What? Don’t tell us you don’t like it.”

“Like which part? I’m… Glad, ya’ all think so—highly—of me…and—” But I stopped, not really sure what to say.
They all laughed.

“But,” Says Gally, “For real though, Greeny, what do you think of Bravery?”

“Bravery?” He asks, “Where did you get that? I’m not brave.”

“Comes from your brother,” Gally smiles at me, “He’s got a lot of it…”

“You’re right!” My brother nods, “He IS brave!”

I smile back at Gally, sometimes I really don’t like Gally, gets on my. nerves all the time, and he’s pretty mean sometimes. So… often I forget that Gally has a good heart and loves all the Gladers and would do anything for us. And I think In that very moment me and Gally became closer friends.

“I like Bravery!” My brother says happily, “It’s good, thanks Gally, and my brother is brave! I saw him jump a cow once!”

The whole party busts out laughing, I turn to him, “Wat does that even mean?” Everyone stops laughing to listen.
“It means,” He says, “That you jumped on and over a cow!”

Everyone laughs again… I don’t mind if they laugh, I just hope a nickname doesn’t come from this, I don’t want to be known as the Cow-Jumper or something.
The main reason why I don’t mind them laughing is because we’re all friendly here-brothers if you will, and it wasn’t really me who did that, it was old me, who I’m sure was very different.

“Are you gonna let them laugh like that?” Says Bravery, seeing that I don’t mind, “Aren’t ya gonna stop’em? Throw a punch at’em?”
This only makes them laugh harder. I still don’t mind and I can’t help but chuckle and wonder, what kind of guy was I that he thinks I would just punch’em? Was I mean? But all I say is, “It’s alright Greeny, I don’ mind.” I smile.

“Unless you wanna fight?” Gally says Grinning at me and cracking his knuckles. He knows that I’ve never been into that kind of sport.

“Go on Newt!” Says Winston, and they all start trying to get me to.

“No, guys. There ain’t no point anyhow. We all know who’d win, now don’ we?” This makes Gally grin more.

“Well,” I say to Bravery, “You’re happy with Bravery then, Greeny?” I ask.

“Yeh.” He says.

“Alright. We’ll call ya’ that till you remember yours, right?” I say nodding at him. (It wasn’t really a question.)

“Right!”

Notes:

I made a song for Gally, hope you like it! Let me what you think please! :)

Chapter 11: The Greeting

Chapter Text

Chapter 11
(Thomas)

So, we haven’t really got into tell you about this new girl… and how… strange she is…

The first day she got here I was the one to take her on the grand tour of the Glade, taking her around to meet everyone, and get to know the place so that she can start helping around here. It’s a bit like what Newt did one my first night at the Glade.
“Okay,” I say as we walk, “So, we’ve got Frypan.” Frypan looks up from his pot at hearing his name, he smiles at us and nods.

“Hey,” She says, smiling back at Frypan. She’s a sweet girl, her hair is a light brown, and her eyes are as blue as blue can be, deep and bright, hard not to see when you look at her face, they… suck you in, kinda.
She fixes her backpack on her back, making it more conformable. She never lets anyone touch her bag, and never takes it off ether.

“Here,” Frypan says, handing her some bacon, “Have all you like, you must be hungry.”

She only takes one piece of bacon, “Thank you, Frypan.” I smile at her as she eats it. (From the way she stuffed it down, she was hungry.)

“Good, huh, Greeny?” I say to her teasing her.

“Yeah,” She shrugs, “I guess.”

I smile, and look for someone else that I know the name of, which is most people here, “Um, and here we have, Minho, our Keep of the Runners.” I come up to him and pat Minho’s shoulder and stand next to him, smiling at the Greeny.

“Hello,” She says smiling and shacking Minho’s hand.

“Welcome Greeny,” He says,” He says, “Try and be on your best behavior, no running out into the Maze on your second day, like this dumb Shank.” He says elbowing me in the ribs, grinning.
I laugh a bit, but she says nothing, “Well,” I say, “Here we have both our Med-Jacks, both called Jeff!” I say happily nodding to them as they walk by, they smile and nod back saying over their shoulder, “Hey GreenBean!”

She smiles, “Why?”
I look at her, “What?”
“Heehee, why?” She giggles.
I chuckle, “What? What do you mean, ‘Why’?”
She says nothing for a while, then says, “Who’s that?” She’s pointing at Gally

“Gally.” I beckon him over.

He gets up from where he was sitting, to come and stand in front of me, “Yeah?”

“The Greeny wants to meet you.” I say, turning to her, “This is Gally, Greeny.”

“Hello Gally.” She says, smiling kindly, making me wish Gally would smile, just to be a bit nicer.

“So,” He says, crossing his arms, “You remember everything too, huh?”

Oh! So you remember too?!” She sounds so happy, and bounces on her heels a bit.

He blinks, “What?” He steps back a bit, “No, Bravery—Newt’s brother, he remembers too.”

She chuckles, “Yes.”

Gally opens his mouth to say something, by the look on his face not a very nice thing. So I stop him by saying, “Anyway, Gally, the Greeny and I have a good bit of ground to cover here, so…”

He looks at me for for a while, “Alright, go on, don’t let me hold you back.” He says shrugging a shoulder and turning away.

We walk off together in silence for a while, then she spots Newt, who’s talking to Chuck. She glances at me and starts toward them, I follow, saying nothing, Newt has his back to us as we make our way over to them. Chuck sees her and smiles in greeting at us, Newt turns round to see what he’s looking at, his smile fades a little bit. (And only a bit.)

“Thomas, Greeny.” Newt says nodding to us.

“Hello Newton.” Says the Greeny, her smile big. He smiles… Kinda, it didn’t look very real.
“What?” She asks.
“Nothin’.” He says back.
“Newton, do you remember my name?” She asks hopefully, eyes twinkling.
“No?” He says a bit uneasily.
“Oh,” She says, sighing, “That’s too bad…,”
“Yeh, I guess…” He answers.

We stay and talk for a long time, the whole time she doesn’t seem to see how weird she is, and how uncomfortable she’s making us, especially Newt.

Chapter 12: I Remember

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Chapter 12
(Newt)

I always say I don’t remember her, even though I know that that girl from my dream is the same as the new Greeny.
I just feel weird about my memory, especially now that she’s here, in the Glade…
She isn’t even my type! I don’t see how she even could have been… That just shows how different I must have been.

I want to forget my memory of kissing the Greeny, it’s weird…. Because I also really want to share what I remember, but without sharing about the kiss…

I go to Thomas, he just seems like the only one that I can trust would never tell anyone something I told him not to tell. And also, I wanted to go to Alby, but he’s Stung and can’t talk, I also want someone older than Chuck.

“Thomas.” I say after he gets back from the Maze, having still found nothing. He became a Runner he ran into the Maze one to many times, and Minho said it was for the best that he be a Runner.
“Hey New’, wh’at’s up?” He asks through a big bite of his dinner.
“Thomas, I need to tell ya’ somethin’.” I turn to go, “Follow me.”

We walk past the new houses we’re building, Gally, the Keeper of the Builders looks up from hulling wood to watch us go into the woods.
We go far in and I turn, he stops and looks worried, “Okay, you’ve held me in suspense long enough, Newt. What’s wrong?”

I nod, “Sorry, just wanted to get where other ears wouldn’t hear.”

“Uh-hu, I get it.” He says tilting his head to the side, “Well? What wrong?”

“I’m al’right… It’s just I think I’ve rememared somethin’.” I say hands on my hips.

You should have seen his face, his eyes got about as bright as the sun and he smiled, “That’s great! What do you remember?” He says leaning forward.

“Well, goin’ to a School, an’ the friends that I had…,” I pause rubbing my hands together, “And my best friend …. We did some weird things…” I say, not wanting to say that I remembered someone kissing me.

“‘Weird things?’ What do you mean ‘weird things’ Newt?” Thomas asks, he looks grossed out. Maybe saying ‘weird things’ made it sound worse than just saying I kissed someone…

“I-I just mean… something… I, wouldn’t do now, es all.” I say.

“What did you do?!” He asks eyes wide.

“…” I look away, “Just—I think we wore datin’.”
Thomas looks relieved, “Oh.”

“I just had to tell someone ‘es all.” I say, still not looking at him, “Please don’ tell the guys.” I hope I really can trust him.

“I won’t.” He says.
“Thank you Thomas.” I smile.

I am loving writing this right now! Can’t wait to get further!!

Chapter 13: Is Newt Okay?

Chapter Text

Chapter 13
(Thomas)

I’m about to go to bed when Chuck comes over, “Thomas?” He says, “Is Newt okay?”

“I think so.” I say looking up at him. I’m not really so sure that Newt is so very, but what am I meant to say? If I told him Newt didn’t seem okay, he’d ask why so…

“He just looks…lost.” Chuck looks over at Newt, who’s lying in his bed, looking up at the sky. Gally’s sleeping in the hammock next to Newt’s.
“I think he might just be a bit sad about Alby, Chuck, worried sick, ya’know?” I say.

“What aren’t you telling me Thomas!” Chuck says sadly. I can tell he can see I know something.

“You’d have to ask him, Chuck, it’s not my place to say.” I look away, it really isn’t.

“I’m gonna talk to him.” Chuck states.

“Okay.” I smile, “I’m goin’ to sleep, night.”

“Night Thomas.” He says as he makes his way over to Newt.

Chapter 14: Night Talk

Chapter Text

Chapter 14
(Newt)

I look up as Chuck loudly walks over, he looks down at me in my hammock, “Hey,” I say.

“Hey,” He answers, and he sits down, by flipping a bucket facing me have asks, “What’s wrong?”

I chuckle, mostly because it’s cute, “I’m’al right, Chuck.”

“No. You aren’t.” He tells me, “What’s wrong?” He looks worried, and I hate to see him like that.

“Come her’ an’ I’ll tell ya.” He comes closer and I whisper, “I rememba’ somethin’.”

He stands, knocking his bucket over, waking Gally, who opens his eyes, “Huh?” He says sleepily. I chuckle a bit, putting a finger to my lips, “Sh!” Chuck, also chuckles, turning to Gally, “Sorry Gally.”
Gally only grumbles under his breath something nasty, and rolls over, falling back to sleep.

“So,” Chuck says turning back to me, “What did you remember?”

“Well, I remembaed a bit ‘bout goin’ te’ a school. I rememba’ seein’ ya’ in the halls, every day.” I smile at him, “Ya’re always so happy, would always smile at me, never really knew ya don’ think…”

Chuck looked at me for a long time, smiling, happy that I remembered I guess.
He then tilts his head to the side a bit, “Why does it make you sad, to remember me?”

“Sad?” I say.
“Yea’, you’ve been a bit down lately.” He answers.
“I’m’a not ‘sad’ Chuck.” I say, trying to smile like a normal person. I’m only really sad about Alby, but it’s more a worry than sadness for Alby at the same time.

“What’s wrong?” He asks, gosh, why is he being so pushy with this? He never does this.

“I just feel a bit torn about weather I should tell everyone that I remembared about that.” I say, it’s not the whole truth, but it’s all he needs to know right now. I know Chuck, and he’d know somehow that the girl in my dream was the Greeny. So I don’t him.
“Oh, well, I think that they don’t really need to know that.” Chuck says as if he’s not sure I’m telling the truth or not, “So, if you want to tell them… I don’t think it helps us in anyway.”

“It tells us we went to school.” I say, “But I’m going to go to sleep now, Chuck.”

Chuck opens his mouth to say something else, but I stop him with a look, saying, ‘I’m done talking about it Chuck’. Making him think twice. Just then Gally rolls over; he looks grumpy, “Would you two Shanks, keep it down? Some of us are tryin’ to sleep.” He eyes us angrily.

“Sorry,” Says Chuck, smiling, “Goodnight,” With that he walks back to his bed.

“Sorry, Gally.” I say, trying not to smile.
“Yeah, yeah, don’t even bother,” He grumbles rolling over, “I know you don’ mean it, Shank.”
I watch Chuck climb into bed, I also see him say something to Thomas, and lay down.

I roll over to go to sleep, but I don’t really wanna go to sleep, and have that dream of the girl again. But sleep comes anyhow and so does the dream, but also with anther:

A man and women are laughing like drunks as they hit my brother, I’m laughing also. Though, I don’t find it funny at all. My brother is hurt, with a black eye and bad cuts.

After the adults leave I cry with my brother, holding him my arms, trying to comfort him.

I see then, me, with that girl from my other dream—the Greeny. She’s hugging me as I refuse to tell her anything, “Sh…” She whispers, “You’ll be alright.” And me just crying saying, “How can he always forgive me!? I know I’m wrong! I’m just afraid! I’m afraid! How can he love me?!”

She coos to me, sweet things… We seem close, we seem to spend all our time together.
As she whispers to me, I lift my hand, I look at her and sit up to see her face better, saying:

“Mary.” I wake, saying it aloud. Her name— The Greeny’s name is Mary.

Gally looks up at me from where he’s siting in his hammock, “Oh, I was about to wake you. You looked you were having a nightmare.” He looks at me long and hard, as if he thinks he can suck out whatever I haven’t told him.

“Who’s Mary?” He asks, “Is it the Greeny?”

I stare at him, “I—”

“I bet you know who she is Newt,” Gally stands looking down at me, “Newt, who is she?”

I don’t know what to say, “Gally… I don’ know wat’s… I—”

“Mary, that’s the Greeny, right?” He forces angrily.

“Gally—” I start again, but he won’t let me finish.

“Well?” He says, putting his hands on his hips, “Is she, or is she not?”

I look down for a while, him just watching. I slowly look up again, “I think she is.”

“You’ve known for a while. Haven’t you?” He says knowingly, “I’m bettin’ you’ve known ever since she showed up.”

Somehow I kind of did, so I say nothing. Gally doesn’t stop there, “That’t what I thought, Newt, what else do you know about her?”

“Nothing Gally, just her name—”

“Don’t lie to me Newt!” He says, his eyes flaring.

“We went to school together…” I sigh.

“Is that it?” He leans forward.

“No.” I say, I’m done with Gally right now.

“Are you sure?” Gally demands.

I stand. “What’s with the naggin’ anyhow Gally? Tryin’ to get as much info as ya can?” I say lifting my chin, “Tryin’ te’ hook ‘er up are we?”

Gally stands tall, looking me in the eyes, anger burning in them, “I know you know more Newt, and whatever it is, I’m gonna find out.” He struts away.

Chapter 15: I Know What I'm Doing

Chapter Text

Chapter 15
(Gally)

I was going to try and push Newt but I thought that I should wait a few days or so, would be good.
I get in line for breakfast, to get some of Frypan’s famous bacon, “Morning Gally!” Says Frypan nodding to me with a smile, I only nod back, say nothing.
I find a seat, and look up to see Mary trying to get Newt to take a plate of food that she brought him. As if he can’t get it himself! What do I care? Newt can have himself a girlfriend following him around the Glade if he wants!

I look away as others start sitting around, Thomas and Chuck, the Jeffs, Winston and Zart.
After breakfast is work. I go and do some heavy lifting, then Zart needed some extra hands on the planting and things. After that I go and check the other builders to see how they’re doing. Well as always. We’re building some new houses, they’re coming along well so far.

I go to Frypan’s table at lunch to get some food. I take my plate of beans and… Something… Else, and sit on the table, watching people go through the line.
The Builders always eat first, the Runners would but they aren’t here at lunch time. I like to watch them go through the line, I like to know who isn’t eating.
Today, Newt never goes through the line.
Weird… Alby and Newt are aways last to eat, if it were up to the rest of us they’d eat first. But Alby and Newt always that they don’t mind, and want us to go first. (Even saying that, if Alby hasn’t eaten all day and he’s hungry, we make him go first.)
Alby isn’t ever at the back of the line anymore, after her was Stung he doesn’t come out to get him food, out Med-Jacks take it to him.

I scan the Glade for Newt, and see him sitting alone, I also see Mary notice. She turns to Frypan, “Could I take a plate to Newt for you?”

Frypan looked up at Newt sitting by himself, “Alright, thank you Mary.” He says handing her a pate.

Newt had told Mary her name today, and you should have seen how happy she was, the way her eyes shown. She was so happy that she had to go and tell everyone that Newt remembered her.

Chapter 16: Who Was I?

Chapter Text

Chapter 16
(Newt)

“Good morning it is, ain’t et?” Says Bravery happily, braking the silence;
Thomas, Mary, and I were sitting together.

Thomas is sitting next to Mary, who’s sitting next to me. (She had come over after Thomas came and sat, she made him move so she could sit next to me…) and Bravery is on the other side of me.

“Mh-hm!” Says Mary, I see her look at my shoulder and think about putting her head on it, but she only sighs and turns her head to the sky.

Thomas, who heard her sigh, says, “What?”

“What, what?” She says smiling at him.

“Um, why did you sigh?” He asks.

“Why not? It’s a good day, so it was like, a happy sigh, kinda like: ‘Aaaaahh’” She says half closing her eyes, acting very content.

“Oh,” Thomas says, still unsure.

Bravery chuckles, “You guys are so weird.”

“You tell’em Greeny.” Says Frypan flopping down next to Bravery, “What’cha guys talking about?”

“Not much reallie.” I say.

“‘Reallie’?” He mocks, I roll my eyes at his light tease, they love making fun of me for the way I talk.

Frypan!” Bravery says.

“What” Asks Frypan, getting startled at the sudden yell from Bravery.

“You askin’ for a fight?” My brother asks him.

“Wait—” Starts Frypan.

“Ya’know, my brother is a whole lot stronger than ‘e looks!” He says giving Frypan a look, “Watch it.

“What’d I do?” Says Frypan, putting his hands in the air, “I don’t wanna fight!” He says to me, I can tell he’s joking. (But Bravery dose’t.)

“No! You don’t!” He says loudly.

“Al’right Greeny,” I put my hand on his shoulder, “None of us want a fight, do we?”

“Yeah—haha!” Chuckles Frypan.

“Ya’ don’t care?!” Bravery asks, his eyebrows very high on his forehead, by the look he’s giving me I can tell that the old me would have gotten mad for no real good reason. All he did was a light tease.

“No, Greeny. I don’ care.” I say. I’m not sure why, but Mary giggles at this.

“What? Do you just let them pick on you, all the time?” Bravery stares at me.

“Wel’ yeh…” I pause, what was the old me like?! Did I attack people often? “Don’ reallie mind, Bravery.”

“Why?” He asks.

“Wat?”

“Why not? Ya’ don’ care that he made fun of the way you talk? Your voice dude!” He says, standing.

“No.” I say bluntly, trying to get us to stop talking about this, it works, he says nothing more about it, and we move on.

There’s a long pause, till Mary says, “Soooo…,” She scoots closer to me, closer than I really liked.

I scoot away a bit, “Yeh…?”

“Heehee,” Is how she answers. Whatever that means…

“Wat?” I ask, Frypan chuckles.

“What?” She says smiling, “Hmmm…,” She puts a finger on her lips, thinking, “What y’all got to do around here?”

“Work,” I say, kinda as a joke, but then get up, “Come on ye’ lot, we’ve been slakin’ while ev’ry one else’s doin’ all de work.” I dust myself off, “Guess it’s half my fault, but it’s about time ya’ got a tour, ain’t et GreenBean?”

“Ooo,” She rises, “I’d love that!” Smiling, she tries to link arms with me.
But I pull my arm away, “Ay! Greeny! Calm down. We ain’t like that here!” I shake my head as I start walking, to lead her, “I’m ya’re brother, ‘kay?”

“Heehee, ‘kay.” She giggles back. She likes answering like that, she’s really not for me at all! Don’t get me wrong, I like her, but not like that. She also not always so weird, it’s just she has a mood where she acts like we’re dating again, then she gets all weird.
The only other thing is that she always wants it her way. I don’t know how I was in love with this girl though…

Chapter 17: May I Meet Him?

Chapter Text

Chapter 17
(Mary)

Newtie and I are getting along I think. And I’m pretty sure he likes me. I see him smile at me whenever I look at him, so he MUST be staring!
I think he really likes me—Really, I do! He is very nice after all…

This place—The Glade they call it—is alright, I can’t wait to get out though. I don’t know what the next place is like… I know it’s very different… Bravery would know better, that was his field.

I’m now following Newtie, he’s my favorite… It used to be Newtie following me around everywhere… I miss when Newtie’d do what I asked, now he’s some kind of second-in-command of this place and he makes his OWN choices now or something… Ugh.

Newtie’s giving me a tour of his Glade. He’s so cute—telling me what kinds of stuff they do here in the Glade, even though I already know from watching… He’s just too cute sometimes! Heehee…

“An’ this here is the Med-Jack’s hut. Their beds are in here if something were ta’ happen.” Newton turns and looks at me.

“Ah…” I say, trying to sound like this is really my very first time seeing all this, “Anyone in there now?” I ask, just to ask. (Also, I’ve never seen inside before.)

“Yeh…” He says wistfully, worry in his eyes.

“Who?” I ask.

“The Med-Jacks…” He pauses, “An’ Alby.” He looks at the building.

“Who’s Alby? May I meet him?” I ask smiling.

“He ain’t really well Mary…”

“Oh, c’mon!” I say nudging his arm with mine, and walking in.

The first room has 3 beds in it, 3 heads look up when I walk in.

“Mary!” Newton says, grabbing my arm, then sees the 3 guys, and stops, “How’s ‘e?”

The one with black hair says, “He… Hasn’t changed.” He pauses for a bit, “Newt, ya’ know when someone gets Stung… they don’t really ever…” He looks away sadly, “There ain’t nothin’ we can do….”

I feel the room get quiet with morning, we say nothing for a while.
I’d never heard anyones names while watching because I didn’t care about anyone here but Newton… Now, I wish I knew who this Alby is… He must have been a good man.

“May I see him?” I ask.

Chapter 18: Why Am I Not Mad?!

Chapter Text

Chapter 18
(Newt)

Winston glances at me, “I don’t think it’s a site for little girls…”

I can tell he’s kind of joking, teasing her, but I don’t think Mary ever caught on to our sense of humor, “What!?” She snaps angrily, “I am not a ’little girl’, Mister!” She crosses her arms, “For your information, I am 18 years of age!”

All three Med-Jacks chuckle, Jeff, smiling, says, “Alright, alright, chill ‘kay?”

She puts her hands on her hips, opening her mouth to answer that Jeff, while the other Jeff says, “You sure you could handle it Greeny? It’s not at all a pretty site… Hate goin’ in there myself.”

Both Winston and the other Jeff nod, “Yeah,” Winston sits up, “You’d have to be crazy, blind, or just plainly a dumb Shank, to like the look of someone who’s Stung.” He shivers, “There’s a reason why we try to keep’em out of site of the Greenys, ya’ know?”

“I’ll be alright, thanks.” Mary states.

“She don—” I start, but Winston was already talking, “Okay, Greeny, if you think you can handle it, then be my guest, so in and see’em—Don’t bother him though, ‘kay?”

“Thank you!” With that she bounds into the other room, I grab at her arm, but she’s already in the room. She sees Alby, and screams, loudly. All the Med-Jacks jump up, to run into the room.
Alby wakes, and starts to pull and tug at the ropes, holding him down to the bed, anger showing in his vanes.
Winston grabs Mary, putting his hand heavily over her mouth, yanking her out of the Med-Jack Hut.
He turns her, to face him. He looks angrier than I’ve ever seen him, Alby. Was one of Winston’s few friends, “When I said, ‘Don’t bother him’ I meant it, Shank!” I stand next to him, my arms crossed, angry too. Winston pushes her, he beside himself with anger, “ What’d you do that for anyway?!

“I only—” She started.

“Did you know that sometimes it can take him hours to settle?! Huh, Shank!?” Winston yelled, pacing.

“I’m sorry…” She says, looking at her feet. Why do I not feel so mad anymore? What’s wrong with me? She did wrong, Newt, be upset!

Likely!” He scoffs.

“Really—” She tries again.

Just beat is, Shank. I know you don’t care.” Winston shakes his head, and goes back inside, to help with Alby.

“He was really gross lookin’.” She dares to say to my face. That’s my best friend!… But, somehow, not much anger about it comes… just a small bit of annoyance… why don’t I care?! What’s wrong with me? Who was she to me before the Maze? I feel so bad for not caring, that I make myself mad, and I yell, and scold her, even maybe scare her a bit. At the end of it, I’m sure she feels horrible about herself, and what she did.

Chapter 19: Over Night

Notes:

This is one of my favorite chapters that I wrote for this story, this and maybe the next two also.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Chapter 19
(Thomas)

Me and Minho took a bit longer to get back from running in the Maze because Minho hurt his ankle on the way back, so I’m letting him lean on me for support.
We’re in site of the Doors, but Minho’s limp is bad, so it’s making us slow. Everyone’s right outside the Doors, more worried for our lives than us, egging us on, “C’mon Thomas! You can do it!” Chuck hollers.

The Doors start to close…

I look at Minho, who winces on all the weight he’s putting on his hurt ankle, trying to go faster, but can’t. As the Doors get closer to their close, the Glader’s shouts get louder and louder, “Thomas! You’ve gotta leave’em!” But I won’t, I’d rather lie down and die than leave my friend in this cursed place! We’re getting our together!

Though, it seems that Minho has a different idea, “Leave me! Go!” He pushes off of me, dropping himself painfully to the ground. I look to the Door, I could make it… No! I grab Minho, “No! I won’t! We’re getting out together!” And I pull him, running as fast as I can, running, not to save me, but to save Minho. He’s what matters!

We’re not gonna make it….

“Hurry! Hurry! Run!”
“ Thomas!
“Run! Go! Go! Go! Go!” They shout as the Doors close, their shouts cut off by the sound of the Doors slamming to a tight shut. Out of breath, I fall to my knees right outside to Doors, hitting the hard stone with my fists, cursing under my breath. “You should have left me, now we’re both gonna die!” Minho sits again on the ground.

I couldn’t have, you know that.” I sit down to look at his ankle, we say nothing as I take off his shoe to see how bad the wound is;
The skin isn’t broken. Good. Though I can see where one of his bones is pushed up agented his skin in the form of a bulge. (The bone hasn’t broken through the skin.), “This is bad…” I inform the injured man.

Minho groans, “I’ll be fine in a moment…,” He looks at his leg, “We could just rest here a moment before we die…” It would be easier to just wait for the Grievers to come and kill us…

I stand, Minho looks up at me, “What are you thinkin’ Shank? A more fun, or faster way to go?”

I look his sharply, “Shut it a sec, will ya?”…., “Could we hide from them?”

“How would I know, Greeny?” Minho shakes his head, “I’ve never seen one, wish I could say that I never will…”

“Would you cut it out!?” I shout angrily.

“What?” He shrugs, “What? Do you think we’re gonna make it?” He shakes his head again, chuckling bitterly.

“Maybe…” I say hands on my hips, a bit annoyed.

Huh.” He laughs again.

“Well,” I say, “Talking like that isn’t helping us!”

“Talk like that ain’t helpin’ us ether. face it Greeny, we’re dead.” He looks down and shakes his head once more.

“Get up.” I say, holding out my hand to help him up.

“Why?” He asks.

“C’mon, it’s my death wish.” I jokingly beg. He rolls his eyes and lets me help him to his feet.

“Where can we go?” I ask him.

He hangs his head and sighs, “Ya just don’t get it, do you, Greeny? It’s night time—Grievers come out—We’re dead. Alright?!” He looks afraid, and a bit angry, but also as if he doesn’t want to start a fight.

“You can’t tell me there’s no hope at all!” I say, crossing my arms.

“Look, best bet; we run.” He looks at his ankle, “Which is gonna be kinda hard on me, Shank…”

“Where should we go?” I say as calmly as I can, thinking I could try and carry him if it comes to it.

“I don’t know…” He starts to limp away slowly, leaning on the walls to stay on his feet, “Come on Tommy, this way.”

I follow him, he must have a plan of some kind… He gets us to a wall, and wall covered with green vines. I stare up the tall wall, “What’s this?” I ask.

“What dose it look like?” He says, looking annoyed, “It’s a dead end.” He scoffs.

I through my arms into the air in the air, “How can you have run into a ‘dead end’ if you know the whole Maze?!” I pause, looking up yet again at the vines; an idea forming.

“I’m not lost if that’s what you mean, Shank.” He huffs, “Just wanted a prettier place to die—it’s greener here.”

“Really?” I snap.

No.” He growls, “I just didn’t know where to go, alright.”

“What if…” I point at the vines, “What if we climbed it?”

Notes:

Since I love my story, you guys, and also these chapters, I would really love to hear what you think of this story, and Minho and Thomas friendship in these next few chapters! Let me know in a comment! 😆

Chapter 20: Gotta Get Out

Notes:

Okay, here’s one of my other favorites!!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Chapter 20
(Minho)

Why is it so hard for this Shuck-Face to understand that we’re dead!? He should know after being living in the Glade for as long as he has, that there’s no way to get away from a Griever.

“Greeny, it ain’t gonna work! There’s no where up the to hide—Just like down here! No matter where we go They’ll find us!” I shack my head.

“Minho, if there’s no hope, then what’s stoppin’ you form trying to live?” Thomas asks in his ‘listen to me, I have a good plan, you just don’t see it yet’ voice.

“Fine,” He’s right, I’m sure Ben tried to live, even with no hope. Who knows what he did to try though… I kinda wish I did know what everyone who got stuck in the Maze over night… Maybe it’d help.

I try to be hopeful as I give Thomas a leg up from sitting on the floor because I can’t stand on my ankle without hurting it under my own weight. Don’t know if you’ve ever tried it, but it’s hard to hope when your mind is screaming at you that you’re about to be ripped to shreds by the monster of you nightmares! And while you know there’s no hope….

And there isn’t any…

“Hey,” Thomas says looking down at me while hanging on the vines, “Minho, it’s gonna be alright. We are gonna make it out.”

“Keep dreamin’, Shank.” Is all I say back bluntly as he pulls me up the wall by the arm; we’re now on top of one of the shorter walls of the Maze, we hide in the vines of the wall.

***

The light is almost all drained away, and we haven’t moved a inch from our hiding spot in the vines.

Clang! Vrrrrrr…Clang! Vrrrrr….

I hear something large move deep in the Maze… It’s far off by the sound of it…. But what if it’s closer than it sounds? Who knows how loud they can be and how fast they are?!

Clang! Vrrrrr… Clang! Vrrrrr…

The sound stops, my heart almost follows as I wait in the dark, vines hanging all around me. All I can hear Thomas breathing…. I can’t just sit here! Like Thomas said, we can’t just sit around waiting to die! I gotta run, gotta run, gotta get away form the Griever.
Thomas must have felt me move and must have known what I was about to do, “Minho…” He says, warning in his voice. I slowly rise, “Minho… Don’t even think about it!” I get to my feet, I start limping away badly as fast as I can, it’s not fast but it’s better than sitting in some vines. Anyway I know the Maze, maybe I can trick it, “Minho!” Thomas says in a harsh whisper.

I hear Thomas get to his feet to follow me quickly, I don’t stop or slow, I just run, as best I can with my limp. I think I lost Thomas, though I wasn’t trying to.
I then hear a sheik from a Griever. It’s following Thomas, I feel a bit better now, now that I know it’s not after me. Then the guilt comes—Darn it! I can’t just let the Shank die!

Notes:

I was a bit nervous to try and write Minho, was he alright? Tell me in a comment please!

Chapter Text

Chapter 21
(Thomas)

I’m running, trying to outrun something faster than me. The halls are only just big enough for the hideous monster to fit, its tail slapping the walls as it runs, screaming wildly.
I run to a dead end, I turn to face the Griever as it skids to a clumsy stop. It sees that I have no where to go, so it flicks out its tail, the hard silver stinger shining in the little light there is left. It shacks its body out its robotic red eyes flashing across its disgusting white face. It screams at me as it stabs wildly with. it’s long tail as I run right at it.

I yell loudly as I run at the Thing, it was startled by this sudden move, it froze just long enough for me to pass, screaming in anger it races after me. As I run I bump into Minho, “Come on!” He yells, making some sloppy turns with his bad leg, “I’ve got an idea!” So I follow him, out of breath, not saying a word. I grab his arm to help him run faster.

“This way!” He yells, turning. I see what he’s wanting to do: There are two Maze walls changing—closing. If we run through it’ll cut the Griever off. Minho’s pulled his arm out of mine, limp-running through the doors as they close, he’s already through. I hang back, looking to see the Thing running at me, tail thrashing and smacking the walls, so I run through the doors just so that it would squash the Griever.

Panting, Minho and I make it back to the doors where we entered the Maze, to wait for when they open.

Notes:

Thanks for reading! (Sorry it’s kinda short…)

Don’t forget to leave Kudos!!

Chapter 22
(Newt)

“Newt! Newt!” Chuck yells, waking me and Gally up.

“Wat?” I ask sitting up in my hammock.

“We have to wait for Thomas, and Minho!” Chuck says, running off. I get up, feeling sorry for Chuck, I know they’re dead.

Lots of Gladers wait as the doors open, trying to see—trying to hope…

Thomas and Minho are sitting right outside the doors. Thomas gets to his feet, pulling Minho to his, letting him lean on him. “Thomas!” Chuck yells, by his voice you could tell that he didn’t really believe that Thomas would be alright, and was just as surprised as the rest of us.

“Hey… Chuck…,” Thomas breaths.

“Are you al’right?” I ask stepping forward.

“Yeah, we are.” Thomas nods, as a Med-Jack takes Minho from him.

“Did you see a Griever?” Chuck asks, in child-like awe.

“Yeah…,” Thomas nods again, looking at Chuck, “We saw one.”

“He didn’t just see one, he killed it.” Minho states. Everyone gasps.
