Chapter text to tempt you 🙃

A sudden thump, followed by the soft flap of the cat door breaking the calm conversation.

Toby tore into the room like a feline torpedo, fur fluffed, eyes wild, tail thrashing like it had opinions. Between his teeth dangled a very large, very limp grey… something.

“Oh God,” John said, scooting back. “What the hell is that?”

Toby strutted proudly across the rug like a Viking returning from battle and dropped the prize right onto the coffee table with a wet plop.

Molly squinted. “It’s a mouse.”

John leaned in, frowning. “Molly, that’s a rat.”

“Mouse,” she insisted.

“It’s the size of a toddler’s shoe.”

“Big mouse.”

“With a tail that could strangle a giraffe.”

Molly got up, took a closer look, and sighed in defeat. “Okay, fine. Rat.”

Toby sat next to it, puffed with pride, and began batting it like it owed him money.

“Absolutely not,” Molly said, pointing sternly. “Toby, no. You do not bring your victims onto the furniture. And you certainly don’t play with your food where people are trying to live.”

Unbothered, Toby started grooming the rat’s belly with laser focus, then bit into it like he was cracking open a crème brûlée.

John grimaced but couldn’t stop laughing. “Looks like he’s offering us a share of the feast. Very tribal. Very… National Geographic.”

“I will not be partaking,” Molly muttered, holding her tea defensively.

“You know,” John said, still watching Toby go full Hannibal Lecter, “this takes me back. Uni days. Dissection lab.”

Molly made a face. “Ugh, I remember that. Though mine came with a warning label. One of the teaching assistants actually apologized when he handed it over.”

John chuckled. “Apologized? Luxury. Ours came in bulk bags like dodgy meat delivery. We just hoped they weren’t still twitching.”

She laughed. “Okay, that’s disgusting.”

“You’re the one sipping tea while your cat eats a corpse on the coffee table.”

“Fair. But my rat had a name. Blackie.”

“You named it?”

“Everyone in my group did! Mine had this... tragic expression. I couldn’t just call it ‘Specimen 12’.”

John shook his head, grinning. “See, this is the generational gap. In my day, we just got on with it. No names. Just scalpels and mild trauma.”

“Oh please, you’re only—what—seven years older?”

“Seven years and a thousand rat dissections wiser.”

Toby, now crunching vertebrae with chilling efficiency, lifted his head briefly—like he was backing John up.

Molly eyed the cat. “Toby agrees, apparently.”

“Or he’s just asking for a grading rubric.”

They both burst out laughing as Toby flicked his tail and settled down to finish dinner, unfazed by the humans reminiscing.

Chapter 23: Case Solving with Shruti

Chapter Text

Sherlock walked in like he always did—coat flaring slightly, purposeful stride, emotionally detached stare. But this time, there was a difference.

Shruti walked beside him.

In a crisp rusty brown jacket, sleek trousers, and low heels, she looked every bit the woman who belonged in the room. And yet, as they passed through the lobby toward DI Dimmock’s office, whispers trailed behind them like a tide.

Post case at home.
