Chapter 1: Moonrise

Chapter Text

“Hey, Steve, I’m leaving. I’m through.”
Steve looked at his partner in surprise.
“Everything ok with you?”
“Yes, um, I just want to get some sleep.”
“Ok, buddy. I’m driving home with Chin then. See you tomorrow.”
Danny got up, said goodbye to the others and left the bar where they had celebrated the recent case’s closing.

It was his first case after he had returned from his brother’s burial. A thousand thoughts - mainly feelings of guilt - were running through his brain all the time. He was kind of glad being able to distract himself with work, but now in the bar it was no longer possible. He decided not to drive home directly, but to talk a walk underway. He would never admit it to the others, but sometimes he could find some beautiful sides to this island.

At Kapiolani Park he parked his Camaro and walked towards the beach. The little diner on the promenade was still open, and some guests enjoyed the mild air and the sea breeze in the glow of the fairy lights. Danny walked some more steps and watched out on the sea. It was dark, some stars were flickering in the night sky and the crescent of the waning moon hung diagonally over the city. He took a deep breath and sat down on the narrow wall which separated the beach from the promenade. Just as all the emotional baggage he was currently carrying around with him was about to boil over, something fluttered past him and came to rest in front of him. It was a scarf. Before the wind would pass it further on Danny took it and looked around for its owner. A young brunette walked purposefully towards him.
“Is that yours?” he asked and got up.
“Thank you,” she said smiling and reached out for the scarf. “I wouldn’t have thought it could be so windy around here.”
He handed over the tissue and also smiled.
“"It can get quite stormy here.”
The young woman still smiled and she looked amazing with her summer dress and slightly disheveled hair.
“Well, fortunately it was only a soft breeze and not a hurricane.”
He laughed.
“Yes, fortunately. Would you, um, would you like to keep me company for a bit? Just to be on the safe side, of course, in case a hurricane does come along?”
No idea how this suggestion came to his mind in this situation. Amber was not in town now and he had not yet been able to - well, had actually not wanted - ask her out. Apparently, the brunette was thinking over his proposal, smiled again and sat down on the wall. Danny sat down beside her and considered what to say now.
“You’re not from Hawaii, are you?”
“That wasn’t hard to guess,” she replied with a soft grin. “You aren’t either, right?”
Somehow surprised about her direct counter question Danny laughed.
“What betrayed me?”
“Your accent. East coast?”
“Right. And you?”
She rocked her head from side to side.
“A little bit of somewhere and nowhere. I got around a lot.”
“And what made you come to Hawaii?”
“The same thing as many other people: vacation, so to say.”
“Aha. And how do you like it so far?”
“I haven’t been here for a long time, but the views are quite nice so far.”
Did she just wink at him?
“Um - if you don’t have any other plans - maybe you’d like to have a drink with me over there?”
Again this beautiful smile.
“Why not?”

They moved to the diner and got a table facing the beach. The woman - she might have been in her early or mid thirties - ordered a glass of wine, Danny took a beer.
“So, East Coast, you know why I am here on this island. Why are you here?” she wanted to know after the drinks had been brought and they had toasted.
He took a deep breath. Well, why was he here? Why was he STILL here? Of course Grace was the answer, and Grace was actually really angry with her father and did not talk with him. Then there were Steve and the others of 5-0 who had not hesitated a second to help him find Matty - what turned out to be too late. And there was Amber. Things went on well with them, but it was not the big love. He had had that and it had gone wrong.
“Well, I think it's because of some kind of duty,” he finally answered and she frowned in surprise.
“I’m sure nobody has said that about Hawaii before,” he replied and laughed.
It was a quiet, throaty laugh, and he liked it.
“Possibly. What do you do for a living if you don’t spend your vacation in Hawaii?”
She smiled mysteriously and leaned back.
“Don’t let us ruin the night with those boring things like jobs. No jobs, no stories about family, friends and cars, no names. That makes it all boring.”
Now Danny frowned. What happened here?
“No names, huh? And how am I supposed to call you?”
She looked at the sky for short and smiled again.
“Call me Luna.”

“I don’t usually do this, seriously,” he reassured her for about the third time when he held the key card to the RFID reader of the hotel room and she followed him through the open door.
She closed it and took off her sandals.
“I don’t care at all whether you usually do this or not. I want you to do it now.”
With that he put both her hands at the sides of his head and kissed him again. Dear Lord!

As soon as he had got rid of his shoes, the woman - Luna - pushed him onto the bed, leaned over him and started unbuttoning his shirt while they were making out passionately. He drew her on his lap, felt the zipper of her dress on her back and pulled it down. Then he slipped the straps from her shoulders and kissed the exposed skin. He had seen before that she was not wearing a bra and he could hardly wait to caress her round breasts with his lips. Luna had a sporty, toned figure, but her breasts still made her look feminine. She sat up and moaned softly at his touch. After a while, she pulled away from him and turned her attention to his shirt. As soon as she had freed him from it, she slid down from his thighs to the floor and opened his pants. Danny began to think that what he was about to do was not right. The fact that he did not know the woman at all was one thing, but he was in a committed relationship and this was definitely going in a direction that was not good.
“Mhm, that’s gonna be fun,” she grinned, when she discovered the contents of his pants, and closed her lips around his penis in all seriousness. It did not matter if it was right or not - he wanted this woman, right now and here.

Leaning slightly back on his arms, Danny enjoyed how Luna's lips and tongue ran along his penis and played with it. When she let go he was about to hold her, but he skipped that thought at the last moment. She got up and pulled her panties down. The dress hung around her hips, but she would not make any effort to undress it, but gathered up the skirt and sat on his lap. She placed one arm around his back and held onto him, with the other hand she stroked through the hair on his chest and let her thumb draw circles around his nipple. Then she looked deep into his eyes - she had strange light blue eyes - and brought herself into the right position so he could penetrate her. Last chance to end it, thought Danny, but by now it was too late anyway. She gasped as his penis slid into her and he put both hands on her hips to hold her tight. Luna grinned, pushed away his hands and moved in her own rhythm. A not unimportant thought came to his mind.
“Just a second…”
He reached for his pants and took a condom out of his wallet. She got up and helped him to put it on.
“And now go and fuck me,” she whispered and nibbled on his earlobe. By God, if this continued like that, it would be an intense but brief experience.

Again and again he tried to control things, but she would only let him do so briefly and took from him what she wanted. It was hot, and Danny did not want to think that it could end, but it would definitively end in a few moments. Luna spread her legs a little further and took him completely inside her - then she dug her hands into his back and screamed out her pleasure. Danny gripped her waist a little tighter and gave up trying to control himself. He wanted to come inside her now and looked into her eyes again. She grinned challengingly and when the liberating wave finally crashed over him, he realized that she came with him.

* * *
The sound of a closing door woke Danny; it was still very early in the morning. He tried to orientate - where was he? Then he remembered and he looked around searchingly. Apparently he was alone in the room. Where was she? Her things were gone. The other side of the bed was still a bit warm and a piece of paper lay on the pillow. ‘Had fun with you, Luna,’ it read. Instead of the type L she had drawn a crescent moon.
He had to grin, quite cheeky of her. But that probably served him right. What a stupid idea, sharing a room with a woman that had not even told him her real name.
Where was his badge actually? Yes, he had left it in the car along with his weapon yesterday. His shirt still smelled slightly of her perfume. What had there been up with him yesterday? How should he tell Amber? Torn between a guilty conscience and contented relaxation, he lay there for a while. The brightening daylight made the magic of the night fade. Danny got dressed and put the paper into his pocket. He finally left the room, paid it at the reception and walked back to his car. Yesterday’s diner was already open, some breakfast guests were queuing. Danny checked the time again. Then he was just a few minutes late, if he got a coffee now, what would happen. On his way home he thought again about what had led him to this strange action. He was not the kind of man to cheat, but this woman had managed to draw him away from all of his problems within minutes. Not that his relationship with Amber would mean any problem, but he had just not cared. It looked like a one-off story anyway. He had enjoyed it as long as it had lasted, and now it was over, fullstop.

“Morning, sunshine. Did you get home safely yesterday?"
Danny had met Steve in his kitchen as always, where he had drunk his mug of coffee almost completely.
“I’ve been living on this island for more than four years, do you think I wouldn’t find my way home without you?” Danny snapped and poured himself some coffee - one would not be enough after a night like that.
Steve raised his hands defensively.
“Sorry for caring about my best friend! But if you’re in a mood like that, then everything seems to be fine. If you could just say good morning like normal people!”

The way to the 5-0 headquarters continued in a similar manner. Steve said something, Danny got upset about it, Steve got upset about Danny getting upset - just like usually. Danny suddenly realized that it bored him. He was aware of the fact that Steve worried about him after the events in Columbia and that his teasing was his way of showing his sympathy. But what happened last night had such a liberating effect on him that the teasing with Steve got totally on his nerves.
“What’s up with you now? Don’t you talk with me anymore?” Steve asked promptly, sounding almost insulted.
“Give me just one moment in peace please, ok?”
His best friend looked at him from the side in surprise.
“Are you really ok?”
Danny could not help but grin slightly.
“Don’t worry, ok? I’m fine.”
“Really? You seem like a different person to me, that’s not normal!”
The cop recognized that the moon was still hanging as a very pale crescent low on the horizon and he smiled.
“Must be blamed on the moon.”
