I'll Find My Way

Summary:

Evan spent his younger years feeling as if he didn't belong. At least not with the Buckleys.

A story of how Buck finds his people and his true place in the world! And I think we all know where that is :)

Or A younger, lost Buck becomes Tim Bradford and Angela Lopez's puppy (like Tamara is Lucy's puppy on The Rookie).

Notes:

Hi!

So I have a completed multi-chapter Rookie/9-1-1 crossover, "I'm Gonna Win For You", and a series I'm going to have that's going to be continuous stories following that. However, this will be a separate story where 9-1-1, Hawaii Five-O, and The Rookie crosses over, no relation to that story or series.

I couldn't get out of my head the idea of a younger, lost Buck becoming Tim Bradford and Angela Lopez's puppy. They're one of the ultimate bestie duos (in my opinion) on The Rookie, so in my mind it only makes sense that the two of them would come across someone in their early years on the job to look after like Lucy looks out for Tamara.

Plus, any way to combine multiple of my favorite shows and their awesome characters? I might as well try and write it :)

Round about characters' ages/eras:

Pre-Season 1 for both shows in this chapter

Tim: Mid to Late 20s (out of his rookie year)
Ang: Mid 20s (out of her rookie year)
Buck: 16-18 years old
Maddie: 25-27 years old

Hawaii Five-0 characters to come in the next couple of chapters!

Disclaimer: I do not own the characters displayed in this piece. All characters & rights of 9-1-1 belong to ABC and the show's creators. All characters & rights of The Rookie belong to ABC and the show's creators. All characters & rights of Hawaii Five-0 belong to CBS and the show's creators.

Chapter 1: Where Can I Belong?

Chapter Text

Evan spent his younger years feeling as if he didn't belong. At least not with the Buckleys.

He realized he was never truly one of them the day his sister went off to boarding school. He sobbed and sobbed for DAYS after finding out she would no longer be in the same house as him anymore. Maddie was the only person who looked out for him: made sure he was dressed correctly for the weather, was fed, and looked after if he was ever hurt or sick. How was he supposed to survive without her? That was the only thing Evan would shout at the Buckleys at the young age of 5. The Buckleys held no remorse as they continued getting a 14 year old Maddie ready for her next adventure.

Unsurprisingly, matters only got worse as Maddie never really returned home on holidays and years later was only home a few weeks after she graduated high school. The damage had already been done. There was no real sibling relationship at that point, not that there had ever been one. Maddie always acted more like a nanny than a sister. Evan never loved her any less, he just always wished he could have her around. It was as if Evan was an only child and what was worse? An only child that was ignored and unloved by his parents. Evan could never understand his parents hatred towards him.

For the next 11 years, Evan spent every day as a nuisance to his parents all for just existing. Why'd they have him then? As he got older, he realized he must've been an accident. His parents must've only ever wanted one child and that was obvious. Margaret and Philip Buckley ADORED their daughter. One would've assumed that same adoration would apply to their son, but it didn't. That's why when he filed for emancipation at 16, he (stupidly) hoped there'd be some pushback from his parents. At least an argument about their family's image or reputation.

However, Margaret and Philip signed the emancipation papers without even a second thought. Evan was both saddened and relieved for this to be the case. At least he had all the confirmation he needed that he was never wanted. He was free from Margaret and Philip's "care".

Evan packed up a lot of his clothes and the very few valuables he had accumulated over the years. He grabbed some snacks from the kitchen as well with, shockingly, no protest from either Buckley. Though, for some reason that Evan never could understand, they handed him the keys to Maddie's old Jeep, an envelope with a few thousand dollars, and Philip's parting words, "Good riddance."

Margaret just glared at him as he drove away from the house that was never a home to Evan. How could it have been? There was no love, no safety, no warmth. That all died the day Maddie left for school.

Maddie. He should tell Maddie, Evan thinks as he drives towards the hospital. He overheard his parents talking on the phone with her the other day about how she had finally come to her senses and moved back to town with her husband Doug. Evan hates Doug. While Margaret and Philip were never physically abusive, Evan could admit they were emotionally abusive and neglectful. Maddie's husband was both emotionally AND physically abusive. Evan could tell. Of course, his, MADDIE'S parents were none the wiser. Evan thinks back to the night Maddie had brought Doug over as her fiance for the first time.

"A doctor, Maddie, how wonderful!" Margaret had gushed over Doug.

"Yes, I'm quite proud of him," Maddie responded, quite reserved. A 13 year old Evan didn't miss how forced her smile was or how she lacked pride, despite expressing it.

Philip had clapped Doug on the back, "Welcome to the family, son."

That had set Evan off. After storming off, Maddie had followed Evan to try and calm him down. It was in that moment, that Evan had realized the fading bruises on her arms. Evan had begged Maddie to call off the engagement, call the police.

"I don't want to lose you," Evan cried.

Evan's pleas didn't matter, he lost her yet again anyway. She married Doug and moved to Boston. He hadn't seen her since the wedding and their communication had been minimal. Nonetheless, Evan wanted to let Maddie know he'd no longer be around. He didn't know where he was off to yet, but he wanted her to know that it was going to be as far away from Pennsylvania as possible. Maybe he could convince her to join him. Leave that good for nothing husband of hers behind.

Maddie, while happy to see Evan, was not happy with the news he shared.

"Where are you going to go? Who is going to take care of you, Evan?!" Maddie exclaimed, trying to keep her nerves and anger at bay.

That was the first time that Evan had ever flinched at his name coming from his sister. There had always been a fondness to it, but now, it was venomous to his ears as it rolled off her tongue.

Evan bit back tears defeated, before he answered, resigned, "The same person that's been looking out for me my whole life. The only person. ME."

With that, Evan turned on his heels and exited the hospital. There were no desperate cries to 'stay' or 'come back'. Evan made the mistake of waiting in the parking lot for an hour, praying to some God he was sure didn't exist at this point for his sister to follow him out. To care.

With tears streaming down his face, Evan drove away from the hospital, from the only person to ever show him even a shred of familial love.

Evan passes the 'Leaving Pennsylvania' sign a few hours later.

Philip Buckley was right about one thing. Good riddance indeed.

Evan had never felt this free and been so thankful to have the idea to be emancipated at the start of the summer. He had checked with the social worker if it would be alright to travel a bit before settling down, stating he'd never left his hometown, let alone the state of Pennsylvania. The social worker was baffled and agreed that he could travel, as long as he kept in touch. She mentioned when he wound up settling anywhere long term that he would have to find a stable job, apartment, and finish school. Evan had no problem agreeing with keeping her in the loop and also let her know his plan was to head west. As he started on his journey, he found out about all the touristy things that would be on the way and stopped at each and every one of them.

So for the next year of Evan's life, he drove around the United States. He picked up odd jobs for some extra cash, completed his schooling by receiving his GED, and basked in the freedom. He saw the beauty of the National Parks, visited baseball stadiums, and museums. He was free, but was he happy? For the most part, yes, but the other part of him? Evan was lonely. He had always been alone in the Buckley household, but the feeling of loneliness never quite settled as it did as he was enjoying his life fully for the first time. He realized that it was because there was truly no one to share it with.

That all changed the moment he stepped foot in Los Angeles.

Immediately, Evan felt more at peace than he had ever felt in his entire life. He guesses that the warm weather and upbeat attitudes of those who surrounded him would do that for him. He found a dingy apartment that he could rent for cheap on a monthly basis and a bus boy job at the diner not too far from it.

He started noticing that it was a diner that first responders tended to frequent. Instantly, Evan was enamored. Evan would strike up a conversation with any police officer, dispatcher, or firefighter that would give him the time of day. Evan had always been curious, but he had always been told by Margaret and Philip that he was annoying and exhausting. That never seemed to be the case with any of the first responders, especially after finding out that he was just a teenager, all on his own. The only times that people weren't as willing to chat was if there had been a particularly grueling day on the job. Evan had been working his way up from bus boy to waiter, so he was starting to spot specific moods and mannerisms of the regulars that would come to the diner.

One day, when the lunch rush had settled, one of Evan's coworkers, Casey, had asked him to sub in as she had to run and pick up her daughter from day care. Evan, not really having anywhere else to be and in need of some extra cash, happily agrees. A patrol officer held open the door for Casey as she left the diner. He didn't seem to be in a good mood, so Evan walks over cautiously to take his order.

"Hi, I'm Evan-"

Another patrol officer, this one being female, walks into the diner as the man cuts Evan off saying, "Coffee black."

Evan nodded his head in understanding and went to retrieve his coffee. The female officer sits across from the male one stating, "You don't have to bite the kid's head off. All he was doing was trying to get your order. If I were him, I'd spit in your drink."

The male officer rolls his eyes at the female, "I'd sincerely hope he wasn't stupid enough to spit in a police officer's coffee."

Evan brings over the man's coffee as the female says, "Well, I'm sure he was hoping that as a pillar and role model for the community that you would be kinder."

Evan has to bite his lip to stop himself from laughing as he puts the coffee down in front of the man. The female notices and snickers as the man, seemingly more annoyed than before, just picks up his coffee and sips it.

Composing himself, Evan turns towards the female, "Anything I can get for you?"

"I'll have a stack of pancakes and a Diet Cola please, Evan," The female officer responds, "I'm Angela, by the way, and this grump is Tim."

Tim rolls his eyes, looking directly at Angela, "I'm not a grump."

"Would you like anything else, Tim?" Evan asks, more nervous than before.

Tim notices that he's the cause for Evan's nerves and apologizes, "Um, a cheeseburger and fries. Sorry Evan, bad shift."

"That's okay. I'll put those orders in for you now," Evan smiles as he goes to put their orders in. He brings over Angela's soda and then lets them be. He checks on the other few patrons while he waits for Tim and Angela's orders to be ready. Evan jumps up faster than he should've when Chef Gus calls out what's ready.

Evan, still new to the waiting world, balances the plates of food and walks over to Tim and Angela slowly.

Evan puts down their meals and before he can ask if they need anything else, Angela pipes up, "You new?"

"Yes, ma'am-"

Tim snickers as Angela looks to Evan, a little offended, "Ma'am?"

Evan's eyes bug out, "I'm sorry. Um, is miss better?"

Tim laughs at that, nearly choking on the last few sips of his coffee, spilling some on his uniform.

Angela points at Tim, "Karma, my friend."

Evan swallows nervously and does what he does best. He rambles, "Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you, just you know, you're an authority figure. I respect the hell out of first responders and-"

"Woah, Evan, slow down," Angela says as she gives Tim a worried glance, "I was mainly kidding."

"Oh," Evan responds, embarrassed, "I'll be right over there if you two need anything else."

Evan can tell that both Tim and Angela want to say something else, but he scurries, cowardly, to check on the other patrons once more. The others leave and Evan finds himself in the corner where his backpack is. It's only Tim and Angela left in the diner. He takes a quick glance at them and thinks to himself, wow so established. Evan can't imagine they're that much older than him, they, at the very least, don't seem to have left their twenties yet. If they have, they have amazing skin. As to seem like he's not staring, he grabs his book and starts to read.

He doesn't get very far in the chapter as their radios roar to life, asking for assistance.

"Damn it!" Tim curses as he pulls out his wallet and puts some cash down on the table. Angela responds into her radio and then the two run out the door.

Evan sighs as he puts his book down and clears their table. Evan finds forty dollars cash and pays their bill before taking the change as his tip. He then goes back for the dishes. He feels bad that they didn't get to finish their meals. It's then that Evan realizes along with the cash that Tim had left him his business card. Evan pockets it gratefully.

Days go by with no sightings of Tim or Angela. Evan's slightly disappointed, although he doesn't fully know why. It's not like he was able to chat with the pair long, but there was something about them that seemed inviting. Tim did leave his card, after all. Was it a mistake?

A week after Tim and Angela had come to the diner and fifteen minutes before his shift is about to end, Tim walks in alone and not in uniform. Evan walks over to the table to greet Tim, "Afternoon Tim. What can I get you?"

Tim smiles, "How about I try to finish my cheeseburger this time with some onion rings though instead of fries please."

"Anything to drink?"

"Coke."

"You got it," Evan says, but before he turns to put his order in, he adds, "I'm about to get off shift so Casey will probably finish taking care of you."

Tim nods, "Do you have anywhere to be?"

Evan clears his throat, caught off guard, "No."

"Why don't you put in my order and then whatever you want to order so that you can join me?" Tim asks.

"Why?"

Tim shrugs, "You served my sergeant and his wife the other day. Both said you seemed really interested in first responders. It's almost as if you're considering a career in it. If that's the case, I figured I could offer some guidance or insight of my own."

Evan's excited, but he doesn't want to show it too much and make Tim regret offering. Evan nods and runs to put in Tim's burger along with one of his own. Evan clocks out and lets Casey know that she'll need to cover Tim and his table, technically. Casey laughs and pushes Evan towards Tim.

Evan brings over their drinks and sits down across from Tim, who gets right into it, "Did you see my card that I left the other day for you?"

Evan takes a sip of his soda and nods, "Yes, thank you. Although, was there a reason you left it?"

Tim smiles softly and starts to explain, "I've not been on the job long, but I can spot a lost soul when I see one. I was one. I just wanted to let you know that there was someone on your side, if you needed there to be."

Evan's truly touched. No one has ever truly looked out for him.

"I'm emancipated," is all Evan can think to say as Tim nods and takes a sip of his soda.

"Abuse?" Tim asks as Evan hesitantly nods in affirmation.

"Not physical abuse, but-"

Tim cuts Evan off, "Abuse is abuse. My father hit me, but that doesn't mean that the words my mother screamed at me hurt any less. I did what I needed to do to get out of there and I'm guessing so did you."

Evan starts telling Tim all about his home life after the man's admission, feeling he could trust him, "I don't know why my parents had me. There's a nine year age gap between my older sister and me so I always just figured I was an accident. They barely ever acknowledged my existence, making sure there was food and clothes I would need in the house, but there was never any love. My sister had looked out for me until age five. At age fourteen, she left for boarding school, college, and then marriage so I had been alone in that house for eleven years. As I left my house after being fully emancipated, which my parents didn't even bat an eye as they signed the papers, my father, Philip's last words to me were 'Good riddance'. Who says that to their son?"

Evan looks up at Tim as he finishes his explanation/rant, slightly embarrassed at divulging his life to a near stranger. Tim looks pissed as he grips his cup.

Before Tim can say anything, Casey brings over their food with a cheery, "Enjoy boys!", as she makes her way to check on others.

Evan picks up a fry and eats it as he waits to Tim to break the silence. Tim puts some ketchup on his burger and then says, "How old are you?"

Evan, sheepishly, grabs the ketchup and puts some on the side of his plate. He sighs, "Seventeen."

Tim's eyes all, but bug out of his head as he asks, "Seventeen? When did you leave home?"

"I've been gone for just about a year and change already. I'm not far off from eighteen," Evan answers as he takes a bite of his burger.

Tim takes a bite of his burger and then continues, "Do you go to school?"

Evan shakes his head no.

"You work here and what else? Do you hang out with anyone?"

Again, Evan shakes his head no and says, "It's just me."

That breaks Tim's heart. He'll deny it if he's ever asked, but this isn't what this kid's life should be. Tim was being physically abused, but he was not strong enough to leave until he was eighteen. He knew he had a roof over his head and others providing for him. He had friends. All these adult tasks were falling onto someone who was supposed to be enjoying his youth. The worst part, he seemed okay with it. As if there was no other options and Tim figures maybe there wasn't.

"It's better to be alone on my own terms than alone surrounded by people who just never cared if I was there to begin with," Evan shrugs as he breaks the silence once more. This does not make Tim any happier.

"Now, I can't tell you what to do, but I want to give you some advice. Maybe even be a mentor?" Tim cautiously asks as he looks to Evan's hopeful face, "First off, you need to finish school-"

"I have my GED," Evan says.

"Okay, that's a good start," Tim responds, "Now, you're really interested in the first responder realm. Is there a job in particular that sparks your interest?"

Evan rubs the back of his neck as Tim quickly adds, "It's okay if you don't want to be a cop."

Evan nods, "Okay cool because honestly, being a cop makes me nervous. I do want to help others though. I don't know, maybe dispatch or being an EMT?"

Tim chuckles, "I could see you doing either, Evan."

Evan grimaces and pops another fry in his mouth. Tim notices, "Do you not like your name?"

Evan looks up at Tim, a little like a deer lost in the headlights, and blinks, "Um, not really no."

"What's your last name?"

Evan wrinkles his nose in disgust, "Buckley."

Tim contemplates for a moment, "You could go by Ev or Buck."

Evan's face lights up, "Buck?"

"I think it could suit you," Tim comments as he lets him continue eating, "So Buck, why don't we sign you up for some activities at the recreation center? You could meet other teenagers and start building more of a community for yourself here."

Evan smiles, "That sounds like a great idea."

Tim eats some more of his burger when Evan says, "I really like the name Buck."

So from that moment on, Evan ceased to exist (except legally for now) as Buck started to thrive. As promised, Tim brings Buck to the rec center and he signs up for a multitude of activities. Buck meets some other kids his age and starts to hang out with them when he's not working.

Buck sees Tim on a more regular basis as well, not just at the diner, but outside of it too. Buck starts to realize that this must be what it's like to have an involved sibling. Angela starts joining them for some of their hangouts. One day, Buck innocently asks how long they've been dating. Angela and Tim spit out their drinks, as if they were in a cartoon, and just stare blankly at Buck. On their next shift, Tim and Angela share the story with their Sergeant, Wade Grey, and the man just laughs for a solid ten minutes. As Buck came in for a tour of the station later that day, Grey starts laughing again and gives Buck a hug.

"That made my day, kid," Grey tells Buck before going into his office to finish some paperwork. Buck just smiles as Tim and Ang look annoyed.

Angela then expresses the sentiment of how she likes having a younger brother for a change as her and Tim walk Buck out for the night.

That statement sits with Buck until their next hangout. Buck had wanted to do some research for a project he was entering into the rec center's science fair so Tim and Ang, as Angela was starting to feel too formal for her liking, were bringing him to Griffith Observatory.

Buck is in awe as he makes sure to see everything the observatory has to offer. As the day goes on, Buck's joy and curiosity never fades. It's as the three are sitting outside, unpacking sandwiches, snacks and drinks for a picnic, that Buck brings up the notion that they're siblings once more.

"I know you both have siblings of your own, so I really appreciate you taking me on as an extra," Buck hesitantly tells the cop duo.

"You can repay me by letting me have the light blue gatorade," Ang teases as Buck hands her the drink. That's the only color gatorade they brought.

Tim rolls his eyes, "My sister's not really around and I've always enjoyed being a big brother so I guess I should thank you too."

Ang laughs, "Aw, your puppy is making your heart grow three sizes."

Buck doesn't really understand the statement, but laughs as Tim glares at Ang, "Buck's not my puppy."

"He so is," Ang says, "It's sweet."

"Why am I your puppy?" Buck asks.

Tim starts, "You're not-"

"Because he's taking you under his wing and you're following him around with admiration," Ang explains, "Like a puppy."

Buck's cheek flush, "I don't mean to be-"

Ang realizes the implications and cuts Buck off, "Buck, I didn't mean it in a bad way. You're our little brother and you look up to us. The puppy term is just how you're described at the station. Again, there's no malice behind it."

Buck nods and then a smile paints his features, "So I'm your puppy too?"

Tim laughs as Ang stops mid sip. She rolls her eyes, "Well, we could do worse on the puppy front, wouldn't you say Bradford?"

"Agreed Lopez," Tim and Ang clink gatorades as Buck smiles widely and opens a bag of chips.

"We're not the only ones adding extra siblings though," Ang says as she takes a bite from her sandwich, "Have you heard from or thought of Maddie lately?"

Buck guesses it's his own fault for bringing up the sibling conversation. Tim lets him come to him about the hard conversations and feelings (since Tim Bradford's not fully known for his heart to hearts), but Ang tends to force his hand at discussing his feelings.

"No," Buck whispers, "Not since I drove away from the hospital nearly two years ago. I miss her though. We may not have had the closest relationship but she did look after me. I do love her."

Ang and Tim nod their heads acknowledging Buck's confession.

"You could reach out to her," Ang says with a smile, "You know where she works."

Buck shrugs, "I used to. Who knows if she's still there?"

"Won't know if you don't try," Tim responds.

Ang squeezes Buck's arm, "Plus, I'm sure your sister feels the same."

Maybe Buck will reach out to Maddie. He can't focus on that too much at the moment as the three of them move into lighter topics.

As Buck works on his science project later that night after Tim dropped him off at his apartment, Buck can't get Maddie out of his head. He picks up his phone and dials the hospital's number, praying she still works there.

"Hershey Hospital. Maddie Kendall speaking, how can I help you?" Maddie's voice chirps through the phone as Buck sits in complete shock, a whole slew of emotions going through him.

"Hello?" Maddie tries again, trying to keep the annoyance out of her tone, "This is a hospital, prank calls are not welcome here."

Buck starts to cry and that brings out Maddie's calming tone, "Sir, I want to help you, but I can't help you if you don't let me know how I can."

"Maddie," Buck croaks out.

Maddie gasps, "Evan."

"I miss you," Buck tells Maddie, "I'm okay though, better than I ever was before."

With their parents goes unsaid, but is understood by Maddie.

"I'm so happy to hear that. I miss you too, baby brother," Maddie responds, "Where are you?"

"I'll tell you as you long as you promise not to tell your parents," Buck tells her.

"I know you can't see me, but I'm holding up my pinky. I pinky promise, Evan, I won't tell them," Maddie says as a wet laugh escapes her.

"You can't see me, but I have my pinky up too," Buck whispers, "And I don't go by Evan anymore."

"Oh," Maddie says solemnly, "What do you go by?"

"I go by Buck."

"Well, Buck, I cannot wait to hear all about your adventures!" Maddie exclaims, "Wherever they are."

"How about I send some post cards and pictures to the hospital? Maybe you could send me back a couple so I know you're okay?" Buck asks hesitantly.

"I can try. I'm okay, Buck. I'm so happy you called," Maddie says as someone shouts on the other end, "I have to go. I love you."

"I love you too," Buck says as the phone line goes dead. Buck cries for a good while that night. When his sobs finally subside, he finds the tub of strawberry ice cream that he bought a few days ago and decides it's exactly the dinner he needs.

Right before he goes to turn in for the night, he opens the group text he set up with himself, Tim and Ang. He names the chat : The Puppy & His Owners.

THE PUPPY & HIS OWNERS CHAT

Buck changed his name to Pup Buck

Pup Buck changed Tim's name to Officer Grumpy

Pup changed Ang's name to Queen Ang

Pup Buck: Do you like our new group chat name? I also found a way to change our individual names for this specific chat hahaha

Officer Grumpy: This isn't funny.

Pup Buck: I think it is.

Queen Ang: You changed Tim's name to Officer Grumpy ROTFLMAO

Officer Grumpy: ???

Officer Grumpy left the conversation.

Pup Buck added Tim to the chat

Queen Ang changed Tim's name to Officer Grumpy

Officer Grumpy: I hate you both.

Pup Buck: Aw love you too, bro <3

Queen Ang: Love you Grumpy <<<<3

Buck laughs as he plugs his phone in and sets his alarm for work the next day.

Buck goes to bed with a smile on his face. He's found a place he's starting to make a home, found siblings and friends to spend his time with, and has Maddie back in a way.

Buck can't wait to see everything else that's in store for him.

Chapter 2: Happy Birthday To Me

Summary:

Buck has a birthday he'll never forget.

Notes:

I didn't mean to go this long without posting, I'm sorry!

I just kept editing and rewriting this chapter.

I'm finally happy with the outcome. Enjoy :)

Also, this in like no way is going to follow the timeline of 9-1-1 and The Rookie's timeline will be somewhat loosely followed.

P.S. Michael Grant and Marcy Nash won't exist in this story, at the very least not as Athena and Bobby's romantic partners. Bathena forever and always <3

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Buck's eighteenth birthday is tomorrow. Buck couldn't be more excited, but not for the reasons most teenagers would be. He had already been acting like an adult his whole life so the legal adult age wasn't the most alluring. No, he was thrilled because this was going to be the first birthday that he would get to celebrate with others. No blowing out a candle on a cupcake he bought for himself. This year, he is going to be surrounded by his found family.

Plus, Tim and Ang had promised him a birthday he'd never forget. He believes them.

So with anticipation and a paper due the following week, Buck had found himself sitting in the very empty rec center, chewing on his pencil. He's grateful that Tim suggested he seek refuge at the rec center, he's made some pretty amazing friends there. Unfortunately, seeing as it's a school day, he's there by himself.

Buck has coursework in front of him. When Tim found out Buck already had his GED, he could only be described as okay with that. Seeing as Tim had never went to college and chose the army instead, he wanted Buck to have more offers in life than he did.

"Softie," Buck teased Tim after he confessed that.

Tim rolled his eyes, "I just think you should take a few community college classes, nothing major. You want every single option at your fingertips, not limitations."

So Buck took Tim's advice and had signed up for two college courses. Thankfully, since he didn't have much income and was emancipated (and still under 18), all his credits were paid for. (No loans, yay!)

Buck spends all day at the center. Eventually, he gets kicked out as the center closes. Even though it's barely 8 PM, Buck’s pretty tired. He makes himself an easy sandwich and texts Tim and Ang. He goes back and forth with them for a bit before he finds himself nodding off. He wishes them goodnight and then hops into bed. Buck must be more exhausted than he thought since he’s asleep before his head hits the pillow.

His slumber doesn’t last long as he wakes up feeling really hot. When Buck opens his eyes, he sees smoke and finally hears the fire alarms.

“Shit,” Buck whispers as he gets on shoes and reaches for his phone and wallet.

Buck exits his apartment just as he’s calling Tim.

A grumpy Tim answers, “Buck, I get it it’s after midnight-“

Buck coughs, “Tim, my apartment building’s on fire!”

“What?!” Tim screeches as Buck hears shuffling in the background, “I’ll be there in 20.”

“Listen, it’s pretty bad up here,” Buck says as he starts coughing. He’s disoriented as he tries to find the staircase.

Buck hears a muffled help from behind his neighbor's door, just as he sees the staircase.

“Just get to the staircase and down to the street. Isabel just called 9-1-1. They’re aware of the situation,” Tim says, trying to be calm, as Buck goes towards his neighbor’s door.

“Thanks Tim,” Buck responds.

“Happy Birthday kid,” Tim says before hanging up the phone.

Buck takes one last look towards the stairwell before kicking down his neighbor’s door. He tries covering his face with his shirt, but it's not much use. He spots his neighbor, who's not fairing much better, covering her face with a towel.

Buck goes over to her, he thinks her name is Gail, and picks her up. Gail is less dazed as she settles into Buck's arms, with a rushed, "Thank you."

Buck just nods and heads towards the door. Once he's in the hallway, he hears a "LAFD, call out!"

Buck musters up a very loud, "Up here, sixth floor!" Buck prays the firefighter can hear him. He's starting to feel sluggish as he carries Gail towards the staircase. Maybe he should've just listened to Tim and gone downstairs, but Buck didn't have it in him to leave someone behind. He was there and he was able to help. He'd hope someone would do the same for him if he was in the situation.

Buck falls to his knees as he enters the staircase with Gail. Thankfully, a firefighter finds them not even a minute later. Gail's unconscious and Buck's struggling as a firefighter kneels in front of him.

The firefighter introduces himself, "I'm Bobby, can you stand kid?"

Buck coughs again and looks to Bobby, "I think so, but I can't carry Gail any longer."

"Don't worry about Gail, kid, I got her," Bobby says as he takes Gail from Buck's arms. Gail stirs slightly as Bobby gives Buck a once over. Buck takes a deep breath and stands up, coughing violently.

Bobby adjusts Gail and takes off his mask. Bobby hands it to Buck, "Here."

Buck goes to protest, but the staircase gets noticeably hotter. Bobby urgently demands, "Put it on and let's go."

Buck does as he's told and puts on the mask, following Bobby out of the staircase. Gail's handed over immediately to another firefighter as Bobby turns towards Buck. Before Bobby can ask Buck anything, he hears Ang, Tim, and Isabel yelling for Buck. Buck perks up, looking for them.

Bobby grabs Buck and hoists him up, starting to walk towards the where he heard Tim, Ang, and Isabel shout. Bobby speaks up, "Buck's a cool name."

"Thanks," Buck says as he takes the mask off. He only coughs once, it's a win.

"Anything hurt?" Bobby asks as Buck sees a frantic Tim and Ang. Isabel's looking around as well.

Buck shakes his head no, answering, "No, but I see my siblings."

Bobby nods his head in understanding as Isabel is the one that spots them.

"Tim, Ang, he's over here!" Isabel shouts as Tim and Ang run towards Bobby and Buck.

Immediately, Buck's engulfed by Tim and Ang. When they pull away, Ang has tears streaming down her face as she looks Buck over. Tim turns to Bobby, "He need to be checked out?"

Bobby nods his head, "I'd suggest it. He's inhaled a lot of smoke."

Tim nods as someone shouts "Nash!" over Bobby's radio.

Bobby reaches for his radio, "Nash, what do you need Cap?"

"Final floor's been swept, we need help with crowd control," Captain Gerrard orders.

"Got it Cap," Bobby answers as he looks to Buck, "I can take you over to one of our paramedics before joining the crowd control bunch."

Buck goes to protest, but is met with four sets of 'Don't even try' faces, "That'd be great, thanks Bobby."

Ang loops her arms with Buck as they walk towards the ambulance. When they reach the ambulance, Bobby looks to Buck, "You've got some balls, kid. Most would've left and saved themselves."

"Had to be the hero, huh?" Ang says, amused and annoyed at the same time.

Buck shrugs sheepishly, "A birthday I'd never forget, right?"

Tim rolls his eyes as Isabel smirks. Tim looks to Buck, "Come on, let's get you checked out so we can go home."

Bobby smiles slightly and claps his hand on Buck's shoulders, "Happy birthday kid. I think you'd be a great fit for the academy one day."

Buck lights up at that as Bobby runs towards the crowd.

Buck sits down in the back of the ambulance and gets checked over.

The medic clears Buck and the four of them jump into Tim's truck. Isabel in the front seat and Ang and Buck in the back. Buck's eyes start to droop as his energy is completely drained. He's sure that his heroics are going to be a bigger topic later in the day. He's bummed with the way his birthday started and the fact his apartment is uninhabitable, but he has his family around him to get him through it.

Just as they pull up to Tim's house, Buck smiles, "So, can I know what we're doing for my birthday now?"

Everyone laughs, but Buck is ultimately rushed into the guest bedroom, the room that is unofficially Buck's.

Tim and Isabel's house is actually a really good size. Well, really just Tim's house, it's fully in his name, but Isabel moved in not too long ago. Thankfully, Buck had been keeping some clothes and such at their place. He doesn't stay often, but there have been times where Buck feels too alone in his apartment. Tim had always let him know that there was a place for him at his house. Plus, now with no apartment, Tim and Isabel had insisted that he'd be staying with them.

Buck knows that Ang believes that Tim and Isabel moved too fast. Buck doesn't necessarily disagree, but he'd never tell Tim that. Ang does. Quite often.

It wasn't long after Buck met Tim and Ang that Isabel started coming up in conversations. Isabel was the newest transfer at the Mid Wilshire station and according to Ang, Tim had never been so smitten before in his life. Isabel, apparently, had an impressive resume to date and immediately hit it off with Tim.

It's not that they don't like Isabel, she's just sort of there. She wants to start going undercover more and Tim doesn't know how to feel about that. Tim's always assumed he'd start having kids sooner rather than later. Buck and Ang are unsure whether kids are even a want or an option for Isabel, but neither want to overstep. If Tim wants to open up more to them about his relationship, he can. Neither see a benefit to pushing Tim to talk about something he's not ready to. Especially when that topic includes Isabel. That man loves her enough to compromise his own needs and wants in life. Maybe they should talk about it.

ANYWAY

Even though Buck's birthday had a rough start, he's still ready for a pretty incredible rest of his day.

Buck wakes up at around 8 to stacks of gifts and pancakes. Buck is in awe that this was all his. Ang excitedly throws him a few boxes to open before he's able to dive into his pancakes. Tim just rolls his eyes at the duo as he rips into each gift as though he had never opened a gift before in his life. He never had. For all Maddie had done for him when he was younger, she had never gifted him anything.

Buck is thrilled to open a new phone, some (overpriced) sneakers he had pointed out to Tim, and some journals. He's in disbelief that there are still more boxes to open.

Tim chooses that moment to put pancakes in front of Buck, "Eat and then you can open the rest."

"I can't believe this is all for me," Buck says before diving into the pancakes.

"Well, believe it because you deserve this and so much more," Ang says as she squeezes his arm before digging into her own pancakes.

"I don't think I could thank you all enough," Buck tells them as he pours more maple syrup and butter onto his stack.

"You're giving me a toothache," Tim comments, making a sour face as Isabel smacks him playfully on the arm.

"Let him have this, it's his birthday," Isabel replies on Buck's behalf, "Plus, he needs all the energy he can get for the rest of the day."

Buck looks up comically at that, pancake hanging out of his mouth. Ang nearly snorts out the coffee she'd started drinking. Isabel bites her tongue to stop from laughing and Tim tries to look indifferent, but fails.

Buck stuffs the rest of said pancake in his mouth.

"Don't choke, you won't get to enjoy your surprise if you do," Ang tells Buck as she hands him a stack of napkins. She starts cleaning the coffee off of herself as well.

"Plus, Bosko would never let you hear the end of it," Tim says with a huge smirk on his face.

Lena Bosko had become his closest friend after joining the rec center. She also happened to be Buck's first real friend. She told him not to admit that to anyone else since it was sad. He agreed with her without hesitation and was shown warmth by her when she got the real reason he'd never really had anyone before. From that day forth, Lena and Buck were as inseparable as they could be with one being in high school and the other holding a full-time job. She brought him along with her other friends and he was welcomed with open arms. Buck was ecstatic and so were Ang and Tim. They were happy to see him branching out and actually building himself a rather large support system.

"Can I know now?" Buck asks, giddily and impatiently.

"Just finish eating and maybe there's a hint in the rest of your gifts," Tim answers. This just leaves Buck with stuffing the rest of his pancakes in his mouth before grabbing another present. He opens a go pro and a pair of sunglasses.

"Thanks so much. This is all too much," Buck whispers, trying to keep the tears at bay, "I still don't know what we're up to though."

All just smile largely at him and insist he gets ready.

"Wear a bathing suit!" Ang cheerfully says as she goes into the other room to change as well.

Buck's dressed and ready to go within half an hour. He's not shocked when he sees Lena waiting for him in the living room, gifts of her own in her hands.

"Happy Birthday dumbass!" Lena wishes with a teasing smile on her face.

Buck opens up a polaroid camera and a backpack. It's not a normal backpack, but one that hikers and travelers use. Tim clocks it. Ang and Isabel don't as they're really invested in the polaroid camera.

Lena whispers, "I guess you still didn't get a chance to tell them."

Buck sighs and whispers back, "Not really. Our schedules haven't lined up and I felt it was wrong to tell one before the other."

Lena nods in understanding, "Is this everyone?"

Just as Buck's about to answer, there's a knock on Tim's door. Buck all but trips over himself answering it. He opens the door to reveal Celina Juarez.

Celina is Tim's next door neighbor. As corny as it sounds, Buck started falling for her the second they met. He suspects the feeling may be mutual, but neither have acted on their feelings. Maybe that could change today.

"Hey Celina! Glad you could make it!" Buck envelopes Celina in a hug.

"Of course. Happy Birthday Buck!" Celina exclaims as she lets go of Buck and hands him a gift bag.

As Buck takes the gift bag over to couch, he thinks back to a few months prior. During one of his slower shifts at the diner, Buck had asked Tim and Ang for advice. He admitted to having a crush on Celina.

“Oh teenage love,” Ang had teased.

“We’re not in love,” Buck said as he rolled his eyes.

“Yet,” Ang added.

“Leave the boy alone,” Tim chastised Ang, before turning to Buck. Tim whispered, “You don’t need to have the talk, do you?”

Buck had thrown the wet towel in his hands at Tim and Ang had fallen out of her chair in hysterical laughter.

Buck sits down on the couch as Celina joins him, giving a wave to everyone else. All look to Buck expectantly as he opens his gift.

Inside the bag he finds a few crystals and a box. He opens the box to find a medallion necklace.

Celina smiles explaining, "Those crystals will keep us safe and so will the medallion. It's St. Christopher, patron saint of travelers."

Lena's eyes open in shock as the three adults look to Buck with expressions he can't read. Buck bites his tongue as Celina looks around, confused.

"What's Celina talking about Buck?" Ang asks cautiously.

Celina looks sheepish as she leans back on the couch, uncomfortable. Lena joins them on the couch on Buck's other side.

"Well?" Tim asks, arms crossed and waiting for an explanation. Buck looks to both Tim and Ang, hoping his confession doesn't shatter what they have. He's so scared that he will disappoint them and that's the last thing he wants. He couldn't stand if his two older siblings were to look at him the same way his parents had looked at him his whole life.

Buck closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, "Bosko, Celina and I are going to travel for the next couple of years. The US, Europe, and anywhere else that seems appealing to us."

Silence. Tim's jaw goes tight as Ang's mouth goes into a pursed line. Isabel has a small smile on her face as she responds, "That's awesome! I think you three are perfect candidates for that sort of exploration."

"Thanks Isabel," Buck answers as he looks to Tim and Ang.

Isabel, Celina, and Bosko turn to Tim and Ang, hopeful looks in their eyes. Trying to get through to them to react correctly. And not ruin Buck's birthday. Buck's not so hopeful.

Buck clears his throat rambling, "It's not like we'll just be fucking around either. We all have money saved. If we like a place enough we'll stay and earn some more cash so we're not broke. And maybe we'll find some volunteer organizations and career ideas along the way..."

Still nothing. Buck looks to Tim and Ang pleading, "Say something."

"What about school?" Tim asks, trying to keep his tone neutral. He's not doing a good job.

"Tim, I like school, but I have the chance to see more of the world. I can always go back to school or take an online class," Buck says.

"It's not always that easy to go back," Tim argues.

"Why is this such a big deal?" Buck asks defensively. He's trying not to get frustrated about this. He wanted to tell Tim and Ang about his travels, but as he mentioned to Bosko, he hadn't gotten the chance. He feared they'd react in a negative way. He knew they loved him and that they wanted what was best for him, but he thinks they sometimes forget he's still just a teenager.

Before Tim can answer, Ang pipes up, "You've finally found somewhere you're safe and you're just going to throw it all away!"

"Throw it all away? What am I throwing away Ang?" Buck snaps, "My job at the diner? My shitty apartment that just burned down?"

Ang flinches back and storms out the back door.

"Nice job," Tim chastises as he follows Ang out.

Buck gets up and calls after them, tears in his eyes, "Best birthday ever!"

Buck heads to his bedroom and slams the door. Isabel, Bosko and Celina sit in silence for a few minutes, letting everything sink in.

"I didn't realize Buck hadn't told you all yet. I feel horrible," Celina admits, "I knew he was nervous, but I thought he had told them the other day when they both had off."

"Not your fault," Bosko says as she gives Celina a hug.

Isabel doesn't answer just goes out her back door.

"We should check on Buck," Celina tells Bosko as she lets go of her. Bosko nods and the two of them head to Buck's room.

Isabel finds Tim and Ang, distraught, pacing the backyard.

"Are you two out of your mind?" Isabel asks angrily.

"Us?" Tim answers, "We're not the ones throwing our lives away!"

Isabel stares in disbelief, "He's 18! He has his whole life ahead of him! A couple of years traveling is not going to set him off on some horrid path. He's young! Why shouldn't he travel?"

"I get it, Isabel. He's young, he wants to have fun, but he finally has stability. He's enrolled in college classes, he's setting up a life for himself here," Tim responds as Ang finally stops pacing and looks between the couple.

"Isabel, we were the first ones to care for him. He's throwing us away for some road trip!" Ang replies hysterically.

Isabel's face softens just a bit, "He's not throwing you two away. I know you both love him. Can't you see that you've given him a safe place to land? However, right now you two are not being supportive. He's been without support for so long, too long. Don't be two more people letting him down. On his birthday no less. All he wanted was a good day to remember. You both had the intention of doing that. I've watched as you two have planned such a joyous day. Don't let this ruin it."

Both Tim and Ang are ashamed as Isabel finishes her speech. Neither get a chance to respond as Celina joins them in the backyard, tears in her eyes, "Buck's gone."

Buck had slammed the door to "his" room. Nothing felt right though, everything was too upsetting, too loud. He climbed out the window.

Buck, already in a bathing suit, had been on autopilot and made his way to the beach. He sat down near the shoreline, feet in the water with tears streaming down his face. Buck doesn't know how long he spends there.

Eventually, Buck feels a presence next to him. Buck doesn't feel calm enough to look up to see who caught up with him.

"You look sad," Buck hears as he turns to be face to face with a little girl.

"Um, where's your mom or dad?" Buck asks as he starts looking around the beach for a frantic parent.

Instead of answering, the little girl sits down next to Buck. She starts scooping up sand with her shovel into her bucket.

Buck tries again, "I'm sad, but I'm worried for you. Where are your parents?"

The little girl looks up at Buck, "Why are you sad?"

Seeing as Buck is going to get nowhere with this little girl if he doesn't answer her questions, he sighs, painting a fake smile on his face, "It's my birthday and my siblings and I got into a fight."

"Oh," the little girl responds as she hands him the shovel, "Maybe this will help."

Buck laughs genuinely and scoops some more sand in her bucket. He's still a little worried that he hasn't seen a concerned parent looking or screaming for her.

"What's your name birthday boy?" the little girl questions as she looks up at Buck. She's so innocent and sweet that it breaks Buck's heart. He knows that he was never able to be like that as a child. He's both happy for this little girl and heartbroken for himself.

Another voice joins the conversation, "That's Buck."

Buck turns around to be face to face with the firefighter from last night (this morning?). Buck can't keep the surprise off his face as he softly says, "Hi Bobby."

Bobby chuckles, "Hey Buck. I see you've met my daughter May."

May, seemingly now uninterested as her dad has shown up, picks up her full bucket and runs toward a blanket with a woman and a young boy on it.

Bobby joins Buck as he turns back towards him, "Cute kid."

"Thanks. I'm surprised your family's not celebrating with you. What are you doing here alone kid?" Bobby asks, concern evident.

Buck sighs, "I'm going traveling after my friends graduate high school. Tim and Ang found out and they're not happy."

Bobby nods, "Why do you think that is?"

Buck shrugs, finding great interest in the sand in front of him.

Bobby doesn't push, instead he just changes the topic, "Both of my kids are adopted."

Buck looks back up at Bobby as he continues, "My wife, Athena, and I tried for countless years to conceive. Eventually, it got quite emotionally taxing for the both of us. We so desperately wanted children, but it seemed as though biological children were not in the cards for us. We have always had so much love to give. We still do. We love May and Harry so much it hurts."

Buck nods, trying to understand what Bobby's point is. Bobby, who Buck can tell, has a kind heart, baring his soul to a whiny teenager he doesn't really know. Buck doesn't feel he deserves the man's time, but since it's his birthday he cuts himself some slack. Bobby smiles warmly at Buck, "Just because you and your siblings aren't blood doesn't mean you don't love each other fiercely. They're probably just concerned for you. No matter how old May and Harry get, I will always worry, but I will always look out for their best interests. It's not always going to be perfect, but nothing is. I just have to continue being a safe place for them. Blood doesn't make my family, love does. I think the same applies for yours as well."

Buck bites his tongue to keep tears from streaming down his face. Buck inhales the cool ocean breeze and looks to Bobby, "I'm sorry I forced you to share your whole life story with me so I guess in turn I should share mine."

Bobby quirks an eyebrow to Buck, "That wasn't my whole life story, kid. Maybe another day I'll share it all, but not today, not on your birthday. I won't stop you from sharing yours, I think it may help."

Buck nods and tells Bobby about his old life back in Pennsylvania. He tells Bobby how eventually he broke free from the hollow life he had been living and found his way to where he finally felt he belonged. He describes the joy he felt meeting Tim and Ang and becoming their pseudo little brother. Bobby nods along as Buck shares how much his quality of life increased as he finally had people in his corner as opposed to fighting him in the ring of life. Then, he gets to what is supposed to be the best day of his life so far, but how a fire and his cowardice ruined it.

"You didn't ruin anything Buck, we did," Ang says as Buck is so startled he nearly gives himself whiplash.

Tim and Ang stand behind Bobby and Buck looking sheepish. Bobby doesn't say anything else, giving Buck a reassuring squeeze and a wink before getting up and heading back towards his family.

Buck doesn't say anything as Tim and Ang join him in the sand.

Ang breaks the silence, "We're sorry. Just felt like you were saying you were leaving and never going to look back."

Buck turns to Ang, bewildered, "Ang, I could never leave you both for good. You're my family. You looked out for me when no one else wanted to. I just want to spread my wings a little more so that when I come back I can be the best version of myself. Not only for me, but the both of you as well."

Ang sniffs, "Such a sap. How'd you get this way? It definitely wasn't from Tim and me."

Buck laughs, "I'm a jack of many trades."

Ang playfully shoves Buck as he gives her a hug. Buck looks to Tim, who still hasn't said a word.

Tim sighs, "Give us a minute, Ang."

Ang nods and goes over to where Isabel, Celina and Bosko have set up blankets right near Bobby and his family. Buck watches as May grabs Celina and Bosko, dragging them over to play with her in the sand.

"You remind me a lot of myself, Buck, and it scares me," Tim finally admits.

"Why?" Buck asks confused, "I look up to you Tim. You're like the most important person in my life. You've given me a life I can never repay you for."

Tim sighs, "No, that's not true-"

"Yes!" Buck yells cutting Tim off, "Tim, you were the first person to care for me! You looked out for me when no one else would even look AT me!"

"It's because I saw a teenager longing to be seen just as I had. I wanted to give you someone who I wished I had growing up."

"I'm thankful you walked into the diner. I'm glad I'm your puppy because without you my life would be vastly different," Buck tells Tim, knocking shoulders with him.

"Buck, I think you give me too much credit," Tim says softly, but filled with a hint of shame, "Especially since I helped ruin your birthday. The one that was supposed to your best one ever."

Buck rolls his eyes, "You couldn't have ruined my birthday if you tried. Plus, it's barely afternoon, that's like just under 12 hours left of my birthday."

Tim laughs as he pulls Buck in for a hug, "Just don't join the army."

"Deal."

Buck finally stands up as he and Tim join everyone else. Bobby introduces Buck to Athena and Harry. Harry walks Buck over to May, Bosko, and Celina as the five of them start building a sand castle. May and Harry proclaim that it's going to be the best castle this beach has ever seen. The three teenagers make sure it's a pretty epic one. Ang and Athena eventually join them with some sea shells to decorate with.

Bobby goes to his cooler and pulls out some cold sodas. He turns to Tim and Isabel, handing them each a drink. Tim nods his head in thanks.

"Thanks," Isabel says as she opens the can and takes a sip.

"So I bet when you were planning a birthday for Buck you didn't intend for it to be joined by two young kids," Bobby comments.

"We weren't expecting his apartment building to go up in flames either, but here we are," Tim says as the kids squeal as all three teenagers start chasing them around the beach, "Plus, it's not like the three of them are far off from being kids themselves."

Bobby laughs as Ang and Athena rejoin the adults.

"So whose puppy is he?" Athena asks as she turns to each cop in front of her.

"Puppy?" Bobby asks, clearly confused.

"Tim's if you'll believe it, Sergeant," Isabel pipes up.

"I'm surprised you went for a puppy," Athena says as she looks back to Buck, "Doesn't seem like your vibe there, Bradford."

Ang teases, "Cause he's so macho?"

Tim sticks his tongue out at Ang as Isabel rolls her eyes.

Athena and Bobby laugh.

"Technically, he's Ang's too," Isabel adds.

"Not yours?" Athena asks. It's interesting to the Sergeant that as Tim's girlfriend she wouldn't claim Buck as her pseudo puppy too.

Isabel nearly snorts the soda she's drinking, "No way."

Athena's taken aback by the bluntness. She notices that Tim is too. Clearly, Isabel's answer bothers him. Athena had worked with Isabel for a couple of years before her transfer. She knows she's an only child and honestly she never expressed an interest in children, only her career. Even though Athena herself doesn't understand that, she doesn't judge.

Tim and Isabel just seem like such an odd match to Athena. She'll observe and see how long Isabel lasts in Tim's life. She won't tell Tim that though. Athena turns to see Ang's reaction to Isabel's answer, she doesn't seem happy. Maybe she'll gossip about it with Ang later.

Bobby looks between all four cops, "So is anyone going to explain to me what a puppy is?"

The kids choose that moment to join everyone on the blankets again.

Celina, Bosko, and Buck run towards the water.

"A puppy is a baby dog, daddy," May says as she rolls her eyes, "You're so silly."

Everyone bursts into laughter.

"Thanks May May for the clarification," Bobby answers as she pulls May into his lap.

"Can we join Buck, Bosko, and Celina in the water?" May asks, "Please?"

Bobby nods his head yes and takes off his shirt and grabs the floaties to put on May. She pouts, "No!"

Athena gives May a look, telling her daughter sternly, "It's for your safety, baby. Wear them or stay here."

May doesn't look happy, but stops arguing, letting her dad put the floaties on her.

May turns to Tim and Isabel, "You two haven't played with all of us yet. Will you join us?"

"I'm good," Isabel answers.

Tim, once again, looks taken aback by his girlfriend's answer.

"I could go for a swim," Tim responds as he shakes Isabel's answer off.

The three of them run over and join the three teenagers in the water.

Isabel's phone rings and she walks away to answer it.

Athena turns to Ang, "Interesting pair-"

"I hate her," Ang says cutting Athena off, "Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt."

Athena laughs, "No worries dear. I don't think she's a lot of people's cup of tea."

"Neither am I," Ang admits, "Still wouldn't talk so carelessly about someone I know my boyfriend loves right in front of him."

Athena says fondly, "I don't think she's a bad person, just seems like a bad fit for Tim."

Ang nods, "Agreed. Tim and I really care for Buck. She came into the picture right after Buck did. Isabel comes from a good family, a put together family. The three of us don't. I just don't think she understands that so she doesn't understand our bond."

Athena hums as May squeals. She gives a smile. Athena then turns to Harry who is showing Ang a leaf he found over by their castle.

After a few hours, everyone starts packing up.

"Can we get ice cream?" May asks.

"Since it's Buck's birthday, I think we can manage some ice cream," Bobby says, "But you'd need to help us get ready by gathering up your toys."

May jumps up and starts grabbing her shovel and buckets.

Athena turns to Buck, "Happy Birthday baby."

"Thanks Athena," Buck responds as May collects some of the seashells from the castle as well.

Bosko turns to Buck, "So ice cream before dinner? Very on brand for a special birthday."

"Agreed," Celina says as she picks up her bag.

Everyone makes their way to their cars to put their beach bags away. The group heads towards the pier.

Ice creams are secured as the group finds a table large enough to fit everyone.

Buck looks around the table, a huge grin on his face as he licks his ice cream cone. Who knew something as severe as a fire could lead to something good? He's grateful that such an event could lead to his circle growing. Now more than ever he knows that no matter where their travels take him, Los Angeles will always be the place he calls home.

Celina sees the fond look on Buck's face and leans in, whispering, "Good birthday?"

Buck smiles, "Best birthday."

Buck gives Celina a kiss on her forehead. Celina smiles as she leans into Buck. Both continue to eat their ice creams as Bosko, Ang, and Athena smirk at the pair.

Tim and Ang had promised Buck a birthday he'd never forget. They delivered.

Chapter Text

Buck has never felt so free.

Buck, Celina and Bosko left a month ago for their voyage. Buck found it difficult to leave Ang and Tim behind, but they had assured him they would always be there. Bobby, Athena, May and Harry had even been in attendance for their 'Bon Voyage" Party. May was quite distraught. Even though it had only been a few months, Buck had grown into the big brother role for May and Harry.

Buck had even started viewing Bobby and Athena as parental figures. He was quite embarrassed to admit it, but when he told the older couple, both were honored to be viewed as such. As a couple, they had even given him some extra cash to have and a promise to not lose touch.

"I think May would throw the world's largest tantrum if we ever lost touch," Buck admits.

May nods along in agreement, "I would."

Everyone in attendance laughed.

"I'm being serious," May whined as she crossed her arms. The epitome of seriousness for an 8 year old. Even though there is no blood relation, May is the spitting image of Athena in that moment.

Buck smiles at the memory as the three of them reach their hostel in Florence. The trio had decided to start with Europe as it was the most fascinating thing for them. None of them had ever left the country and well, if they were going to start strong, they might as well start big too.

They had already done some hiking in Switzerland. While gorgeous, the three of them had also found it quite an expensive country to stay in. From there, the trip moved on to Italy. They had done some hiking in the Dolomites and were making their way throughout the whole country.

The trio decided after the beauty of the Dolomites and the absolute deliciousness of the food that they would stay in Italy for a bit. From the Dolomites, they moved to Venice then to Milan and on to Cinque Terre.

After the three of them settle into the hostel, they decide to take a quick nap. They had been pretty go go go since they wanted to see everything. They decide since Florence is such a rich city that they will stay for a little while. Truly explore and maybe even mingle with others their age. Buck had read that a lot of students from all over come during the summertime and year round to study abroad. Bobby and Athena had agreed that it sounded like a smart idea for them to stay longer there if they could. The hostel was cheap enough and it was the most highly rated one in the area. The adults had especially loved that fact.

Celina and Buck had solidified their relationship somewhere between Venice and Milan. They were keeping PDA to a minimum for Bosko's sake, they didn't want her feeling like a third wheel.

"Oh please, you two have been acting lovesick since the moment you met," Bosko says as she rolls her eyes, "The only difference is now you actually make out and have sex."

Both blush at the comment.

After their nap, each one showers and gets dressed for a little exploration, dinner, and clubbing. All three want to dance and expand their circle. Maybe even find Lena a guy or girl to date. Like Buck, gender had never fully been something Lena focused on. While she leaned more towards the ladies, she would go for anyone of interest.

Buck and Celina walk hand in hand as Lena leads them towards the Duomo. Since the line isn't long to get inside the church, they wait and are in awe at the absolute beauty of it all. Their necks hurt slightly from looking at the frescos, but it's all worth it. Another tourist recommends for them to visit the Medici Chapels if they have a chance. It's not free, but it is definitely a sight to behold. The trio adds it to their list of tours for the area. The David, actually going to the top of the Duomo, and now the Medici Chapels. They also want to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but were advised that is no more than like a three hour all inclusive journey.

As Buck pays for some gelato for the three of them, his phone rings.

Buck smiles and answers the FaceTime as he takes a lick of his cone, "Hey!"

Ang laughs, "Hey Buck! What flavor you got there?"

"Hazelnut and Strawberry," Buck answers, "It's delicious."

"I'm jealous," Ang responds and Buck can tell she means it, "Where are my gals?"

Buck moves the camera to face Celina and Bosko who wave.

"Now I really want gelato," Ang whines as they all laugh.

Tim can be heard off screen, "Earlier you said you'd be fine if you went years without seeing ice cream again."

Buck quirks an eyebrow as Ang turns to Tim, "Ice cream and gelato are two very different things. For example, a perp did not throw gelato off of his balcony at us. No, he threw cartons of ice cream."

The three teenagers nearly drop their gelatos as they dissolve into laughter.

Buck breaks first, "I would've paid to see that."

Tim comes into frame, "How much longer do you all plan to be in Italy? Not pestering, just curious."

Buck and Ang roll their eyes. Not long after Buck's birthday, Isabel and Tim got into a huge argument. It turns out that Isabel never saw herself as a wife or a mother. Totally valid and understandable, just doesn't align with Tim's wants for his life. Tim wants a wife and children one day. He's not budging on that. Neither is Isabel, but she wasn't thrilled that Tim wouldn't change his mind. Some twisted double standard she had expected since Tim was so into her. Thankfully, Tim's eyes were opened and right before she went undercover, the two of them broke it off.

Both Ang and Buck knew that Tim was taking it harder than he'd like to openly admit. So, this led to a more curious and talkative Tim. It's not that Tim was disinterested before in Ang and Buck's activities and such, it's just that Tim would just let them talk about it first. Now, since Tim doesn't exactly want to chat about his own life, he turns the spotlight to them more often. Buck doesn't mind, especially if it helps him get over Isabel. Thank god they broke up.

Bosko answers, "We're not sure. We just got to Florence and we have more cities here we want to hit after. We're planning on staying in Florence at least for a week."

Celina chimes in, "It may change if we meet some people our age we like though. We may extend it and see if we can find a little job. It all depends."

"You feel safe?" Tim asks.

All three nod. Buck assures Tim, "Very much so."

Tim nods.

Ang pipes up again, "You keep forgetting to send pictures! You're not using this trip as an excuse to cut ties, are you?"

Buck puts his hand over his heart, "Never. How could you even accuse me of such things?"

Tim deadpans, "Because you forget to send pictures."

Tim's phone dings as Buck turns to Bosko and Celina. Both had sent photos Ang and Tim's way while he was chatting with them.

Tim and Ang look at Tim's phone. Ang sniffs, "It's gorgeous. I'm so glad you all get to experience different cultures and countries."

Tim agrees, "You'll never forget this experience. I'm glad you have this one over the one I was forced to go into."

The three of them chat with Ang and Tim as they walk towards the Ponte Vecchio. Even though the trio can't afford the jewelry on the bridge, it never hurts to window shop. The Los Angelonians hang up after seeing that a single ring costs $750.

Buck sees Celina admiring a pair of earrings and vows that before they leave Florence, he will buy them for her. Bosko suggests seeing the sunset from the Palazzo Michelangelo. She had heard the most amazing views of the city came from there and Celina and Buck were excited to see if that were true.

As the three reached the top, they stood in complete awe of the beauty of the city in front of them. This was the most perfect way to start their journey in Florence. All of them took turns of solo shots and then of course Bosko snapped the new couple. Buck had asked another American couple if they would mind taking a picture of the three of them. In turn, Buck took a photo of them. They had even got to talking and found out they were studying in Florence for the summer. They had told them the name of a nightclub they frequent and Bosko exchanged numbers with them.

They wind up staying in Florence for the summer. The three of them each find a little part time job at a cafe, gelateria, and boutique respectfully. Since each of them made their schedules so they worked the same three consecutive days in a row, they took their days off to explore not only Florence, but Rome, Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Pisa, and Pompeii. The day before they were to leave Florence for good, Buck snuck off while Celina is in the shower to purchase the earrings for her. Thankfully, they are under 100 euros. Buck cannot wait to give them to Celina that night.

As Buck is walking back to the hostel, Bobby calls him.

"Hey kid! How's Florence?" Bobby asks.

"I'll be sad to leave, but we heard some really great things about Malta," Buck responds.

"What's the plan after Malta?" Athena pipes up, "Maybe you could hit Madrid around the end of November?"

Buck's taken aback, "We could definitely try! What's happening in Madrid at the end of November?"

"I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!" May screams as Bobby laughs and Athena sighs.

"What can't you take, May May?" Buck asks amused.

"WE'LL BE THERE IN NOVEMBER!" May squeals.

Buck gasps, "Oh my God! That's amazing! I cannot wait to see you!"

May squeals in excitement once more.

"I can definitely make that happen," Buck says as he wears a huge grin on his face. Buck cannot believe this is his life.

"Glad to hear that," Bobby responds, "Although, it's not the only reason I called."

"Okay, what's up pops?" Buck questions.

"Have you heard from Tim lately, baby?" Athena asks cautiously.

Now, Tim and Buck aren't fighting. It's worse, Tim and Ang are fighting. Some ridiculous squabble that led into an argument over Isabel. Even though the couple broke up, Isabel still hangs over them all. Tim and Ang have not spoken since then, only when absolutely necessary at work. He knows that it's driving Grey crazy. The older Sergeant had made that known to him when he checked in last week.

Buck sighs, "We've texted a bit, but he's not been answering any calls. He keeps stating it's not a good time to chat. I've spoken on the phone with Ang, who has not calmed down over the whole situation. Unsurprisingly."

"That's what we feared," Athena says. Buck can imagine her rubbing her temples. Bobby sighs and Buck can imagine him mentally going through any possible way to get the two in a room together to (calmly) work this out. Buck cannot see that happening anytime in the near future. Unfortunately.

The Carter-Nash family spends some more time on the phone as Buck walks back to their hostel. He lets them know he'll talk over Spain with Celina and Bosko. May and Harry start getting fussy so they decide to put them down for a nap.

Buck bids them goodbye and hangs up.

Just as Buck reaches their hostel, where Celina and Bosko are waiting out front for him, he gets a notification.

TIM AND BUCK PRIVATE CHAT

Tim: I know you're out enjoying your last night in Florence. Call me tomorrow when you get to your hostel in Malta.

Buck: Thanks! Ofc I can call then! Do you need to talk now?

Tim: No, tomorrow's good. I want you to enjoy Florence. Also, ofc?

Buck: Of course!

Tim: Of course what?

Buck: LOL ofc means of course

Tim: -_-

Buck: LOL

Buck: But seriously, is everything okay?

Tim doesn't answer and Buck sighs. Celina hugs Buck, sensing the tension in Buck immediately.

Bosko, always the more direct one, "Ang and Tim still fighting?"

"Yep," Buck answers, "Apparently he hasn't really been talking to Athena or Bobby either."

Now, Buck realizes that he's closer with the Carter-Nashes than Ang and Tim are, but they still made sure the Mid Wilshire duo knew they were there for them too. Buck is seriously worried that Tim is isolating himself. Ang was always the one before Buck came around that would get Tim out and about. Now with Buck traveling and Ang and Tim fighting, Buck worries he's spending all of his free time alone.

"They're going to be okay," Celina assures Buck, who just nods into her shoulder.

The three of them head to a local spot to end their time in Florence. Buck swears he's eating the best steak he's ever had. Bosko agrees. Celina had opted for a seafood risotto she vowed was to die for.

Buck sent photos of their final meal in Italy separately to Tim, Ang, Bobby and Athena.

ANG AND BUCK PRIVATE CHAT

Buck: Photo of Florentine Steak

Buck: Photo of Celina, Bosko, and Buck

Ang: YUM!

Ang: Miss you dork <3

Buck: Miss you too <3

Ang: Not going to ask?

Buck: About?

Ang: Don't play dumb with me

Buck: I hate it and I hate that I'm not there to help you two patch this up

Ang: He's back with Isabel

Buck stares at his phone. He actually cannot believe what he's just read.

Bosko takes Buck's phone.

"Enough!" Bosko exclaims as Buck snaps out of it, "I know you love them, but dude. We're in Italy. We're going to Malta. We need to enjoy this before we're stuck in a career for the rest of our lives."

Buck nods, "Sorry, you're right. I'm here, I'm good."

Celina squeezes his arm and he remembers the earrings.

"I've got something for you," Buck says through a large grin.

Buck takes out the box and Celina gasps. Bosko's eyes all but bug out of her head.

Buck looks between the two women, "What?"

"Buck, I do love you," Celina starts, "But I don't know if we're ready for marriage, I mean we just started dating."

Now, Buck's eyes nearly bulge out of his head, "Marriage?"

Bosko points to the box, "The box, dumbass."

"It's not a ring," Buck squeaks out as Celina visibly relaxes. Buck rambles, "Not that I'm against a ring, but-"

Celina cuts Buck off, "I'm glad it's not a ring."

Buck sighs in relief, but sheepishly rubs his neck, "I hope it's not a disappointment."

Buck opens the box to reveal the earrings.

Celina screams in excitement, "Oh my God! Buck, they're stunning! I can't believe you remembered."

Celina takes the box from Buck and puts them on.

"I'm glad you like them," Buck says as they share a kiss, "Wear them well."

Bosko pretends to wipe at 'tears' on her cheeks, "That was inspiring."

Celina and Buck playfully snap their napkins at Bosko who laughs.

"Now, let's go find me someone to love on for one last night in Italy," Bosko tells them as they pay their bill.

The three of them party all night.

As promised, Buck calls Tim when they reach the hostel in Malta the next day.

"Hey Tim!"

"Ang told you?" Tim always cuts right to the chase.

"Yeah," Buck responds as he sighs, "I just don't understand."

"It's not like we're back together, we're just hooking up occasionally," Tim defends himself.

Buck tries not to grimace. Tim doesn't do hook ups. He specifically told Buck that when he had asked for advice on how to ask Celina out.

"Tim, it's not my business, it's just I'm concerned," Buck says, "And I'm not the only one."

Tim sighs, "I know, but it's my life. Ang can't just think she can bulldoze her opinion of Isabel on me. I know it won't last, but I do love her."

And that breaks Buck's heart, just a little. He knows Ang means well, but she's a little blindsided with rage on behalf of Tim and that may have blinded her to the fact that Tim doesn't want rage, he wants understanding.

"I'm sorry," Buck responds, "Have the two of you TRIED talking it over? Maybe with Bobby or Athena or Grey as a mediator?"

Tim sighs, "Look, I didn't call to upset you. I'll think about it, but I want you to enjoy. I was calling to see if you'd be up for a visit soon. I've always wanted to see Germany."

Buck doesn't love that Tim is veering away from the hard conversations, but he decides to cut him some slack.

Buck smiles, "Oh yeah? I'd love if you visited! I assume you want to be in Germany for Oktoberfest?"

Tim laughs, "That obvious?"

"A little," Buck says as Bosko comes out of the hostel with a water bottle for him, "We're planning on being there for the first week of October."

"I'll see ya then, kid," Tim says.

"I can't wait!" Buck starts, and then adds, "Please talk to Ang."

"Talk to you later, Buck," Tim answers and hangs up the phone.

Buck's left staring at his phone in defeat as Bosko joins him.

"Can't win them all," Bosko shrugs as Celina exits the hostel.

From Malta the trio goes to France. They experience the French Riviera, Nice, Paris, and even decide to spend a night in Disneyland Paris.

Buck doesn't dwell too much on Tim and Ang's argument for those weeks. Not until the first week of October comes around and he remembers that Tim's joining them. It seems to have slipped his mind to tell Celina and Bosko that damning fact because here they are, in Germany, Tim AND Ang standing in the lobby, uncomfortable and annoyed. To be fair to himself, it seems to have slipped their mind to tell him that Ang would be joining them.

"Are you three parent trapping us?" Ang asks, a bit bitterly as she crosses her arms. Tim doesn't even look at her, just stares at Buck with annoyance.

"Ya know, I wish we were, but I didn't know you were coming, Ang," Buck says as he nervously scratches his neck looking from pseudo sibling to pseudo sibling. Ang looks to Celina and Bosko, both who have found great interest in the ceiling.

"But you knew Tim was coming?" Ang says as she tries not to get too upset.

Buck clears his throat, suddenly a little nauseous and the most nervous he's ever been, "Yeah, we planned it about a month ago I guess?"

Ang nods and turns towards the door. She runs out of the door before any of the teenagers process what's happening. Buck shakes out of it, but Tim had already run after her.

"Well, our plan's turned to shit," Bosko exclaims.

Buck turns to Bosko and Celina. Bosko looks resigned while Celina looks guilty.

"So I didn't forget to tell you Tim was coming?" Buck asks quietly.

"You literally told us the second you hung up with him," Bosko replies.

"Oh," is all Buck can say because what else is there to say?

"We know how much they mean to you and we could see that even though you were still enjoying our travels it was weighing on you," Celina admits guiltily, "We just wanted to help."

Buck just nods. He's thrilled that his best friend and girlfriend both wanted to help, but now he's fearing the worst. Ang looked so defeated when Buck didn't know she was coming, but even more so when she found out him and Tim had planned a trip together. He's really starting to worry that he'll have to choose one over the other. That would destroy Buck.

Celina sees that Buck is becoming increasingly more lost in thought and wraps him a hug.

"They'll be okay," Celina assures. Buck doesn't speak just hugs her back.

Ang runs only around the corner. The streets are packed and all she has is her cell phone. She doesn't want to get lost because she doesn't know much German. Plus, even though she's hurt, she doesn't want to waste too much emotional turmoil on this. She's been missing all four adults in her presence and she doesn't want to waste her first time in Germany on this. She just wishes this hadn't been the ambush of the century.

"ANG!" Tim screams.

Ang looks up and wipes the tears from her face.

Tim rounds the corner and finds her. Both look at each other. Ang is stubborn as always and doesn't want to be the first one to speak. She'll break further anyway and she doesn't want to give Tim the satisfaction. It's clear to Ang that Tim feels the same way.

Ang turns around to walk farther from Tim and the situation, but before she can, he pulls her into a hug. Ang doesn't pull away. In fact, she wraps her arms around him.

Both stand in the embrace for far longer than she'd like to admit. Ang finds when they part that she's not the only one that has tears in her eyes.

"These last several weeks have sucked," Tim starts, "And I'm glad we're both here now so I can try and make it up to you."

Ang, too overcome with emotion and at the fact that she hasn't lost her best friend forever, just smirks, "It'll take a lot of beer, Bradford."

Tim laughs, "Good thing we're at Oktoberfest then."

Ang smiles. From multiple people's recent accounts of Tim, Ang has found out that the man has secluded himself more often than not. She can only assume that's the first genuine laugh that has left the man in weeks.

"I'm sorry," Ang finds herself admitting as the pair walk back to the hotel. Yes, hotel. Ang knows she can defend herself and that hostels have been treating the three teenagers well, but she wanted to treat herself. No one else seemed to mind the suggestion.

Tim nods. For a moment, Ang believes he won't accept her apology or that he won't say anything else on the subject. Very Tim if you ask her. Tim's NEVER been good at expressing emotion, especially when it comes to the complexities of the heart. Whether it be romantic or familial.

The pair reaches the lobby and finds Buck, Bosko, and Celina waiting in the little sitting area. All three approach when Tim finally speaks up, "Thanks Ang. I'm sorry too. I know Isabel isn't good for me, but I found myself in love with her anyway. Guess it just hurt for you to judge me so deeply just because you didn't like her."

"I guess I could've been more sensitive to the fact that your heart was so tied to Isabel," Ang says sheepishly.

Tim just gives a subtle nod of his head, conveying that he's sort of over talking about the whole ordeal and about Isabel in general. Buck hopes that's the case at least.

"So does this mean you two are good now?" Buck asks tentatively.

Tim and Ang give each other a look before tackling Buck in a hug. All three laugh as Celina and Bosko snap pictures and videos.

"Well, what do you know Celina, our parent trap worked," Bosko comments as Tim rolls his eyes.

Ang puts her hands on her hips as she looks to Celina and Bosko, "I am both very proud of you and disappointed."

Buck swallows, "Disappointed?"

"Disappointed that I wasn't involved in the trickery, but proud that they pulled it off," Ang explains, "Just don't leave me out ever again."

All of them laugh as Ang turns to both girls and gives them each a hug. Tim does the same.

The five of them head upstairs to put their bags away and freshen up. Tim and Buck in one room and Ang, Celina and Bosko in another.

Tim and Buck head downstairs first.

"So, where do we start?" Tim asks as Buck pulls out his phone.

"We have the festival tickets for quite a few days this week so tonight I say we find the other bars partaking in Oktoberfest and get started!" Buck says excitedly. He's really thrilled that Tim and Ang finally settled their differences over the whole situation.

Tim rolls his eyes, "Well, I figured that. Didn't want to do anything beforehand?"

"If there's anything you and Ang want to do, we're pretty open. We're just here for the festival, the pretzels, and the sausage," Buck responds giddily.

Tim just smiles. Buck returns it.

The girls join them and they're off. It's Buck's first time drinking with Tim and Ang. They all have a blast.

The teenagers learn their limits pretty quickly. Tim and Ang are bemused and a little annoyed to end their first night early, but in the interest of concern and safety for the three young adults they head back before midnight. They head back with a pretty hammered Celina and Bosko. Buck's tipsy, but he's not so out of it.

They all decide it's in their best interest to stop for some late night snacks. They grab some pretzels and chocolate. Buck and Tim head into their room after helping Ang get Bosko and Celina in her room.

The next day, Buck and Tim are up earlier than the girls. it's not all that surprising to Buck. The days in Florence when they would hit the clubs hard (well, the girls would, Buck would be on the more sober side), both women would wake up later. Buck never minded, it gave him a moment to breathe. This morning was no different.

Tim and Buck decide to go on a bike ride. Tim had suggested it as opposed to a simple run, Buck happily obliged. They rent some bikes and explore Munich. Both men take note of some restaurants, cafes, and pubs that look good. They note some boutiques and souvenir shops too. Buck has been really enjoying the aspects of this trip where even though he's a tourist, he can feel like a local by immersing himself in ways maybe normal tourists wouldn't.

Tim gets a text from Ang as the two of them find a spot to grab some food to go. Buck orders some potato pancakes, croissants, and coffee to bring back to the room. Tim insists he pays.

"Save your money for when you three are on your own again," Tim notes as Buck looks ready to protest, "I don't mind, promise. Germany's always been a dream of mine to see so I have some extra money set aside for it."

"Thank you, I appreciate it. I love that you're here and we're able to experience this together," Buck responds with a smile as Tim claps him on the back. The barista gives them a look of bemusement as she hands them their breakfast and drinks.

Buck and Tim exit the shop. Tim turns to Buck, "I'm glad we're here together too. The girls too."

Buck laughs, "The girls that are probably about to be real hangry."

Tim laughs back. When they arrive at the girls' room, the girls attack the bag of food and coffee. Tim and Buck give each other a knowing look that, surprisingly, not even Ang catches. Tim and Buck eat quickly and each jumps in a quick shower. It's a small miracle that all five of them are ready to go at the same time.

The five of them head towards the official Oktoberfest. Of course, they start with a beer. Before grabbing another one, Tim and Ang buy a ton of ride and game tickets. They establish quite a rhythm. Go on a ride: grab a drink. Play a game: grab a snack.

At some point, Bobby texts Buck to check in. Buck's a little more drunk so all he does is send a thumbs up and a photo of the five of them. Each one has a different snack in hand.

BOBBY AND BUCK PRIVATE CHAT

Bobby: Glad to see you all having fun! Please remember to hydrate (with water, not just beer)! -Bobby Nash

Buck: Water's our next stop!

Bobby: Promise? -Bobby Nash

Buck: :)

Buck's phone dings as he grabs a bottle of water for each of them.

ATHENA AND BUCK PRIVATE CHAT

Athena: I'ma need proof you got water, baby. I'm all for fun, but you need to stay safe.

Buck: Photo of Celina and Buck with water bottles

Athena: Thank you baby! I'll show Bobby, he was getting nervous. Almost jumped on a plane to make sure you were all being smart.

Buck: :D

Buck smiles and shows everyone Athena's message.

Ang, quite tipsy at this point, pipes up, "We should grab a beer in their honor!"

Tim, feeling the beer more than the day before, nods in agreement, "That's a great idea! We haven't had one in like an hour!"

Tim and Ang head to another stand. The teenagers follow them.

"Are we more sober than they are?" Celina asks. She uncaps her bottle and takes a sip, spilling it on herself. She falls into a fit of giggles.

Bosko laughs at her as Buck bites his tongue to stop from laughing. Bosko responds, "I don't think a sober person would spill water on themselves and then giggle uncontrollably."

Celina shrugs and skips to catch up with Tim and Ang.

"How are you holding up there Buck?" Bosko questions as Buck looks after Celina with a lovesick look as he watches her reach Tim. She jumps on his back and, quite surprisingly, Tim lets her.

Bosko makes retching sounds at Buck. In return, Buck bumps his shoulder into Bosko to get her to stop. Bosko's tipsy self is more off balance than she put on and stumbles into another girl. As Bosko goes to apologize, the words get stuck in her throat. The girl is Bosko's type. Blonde and skinny. Buck just wears a knowing look.

"You okay there?" The girl asks Bosko before looking to Buck. She must think Buck is the more sober of the two. He might be, but he doesn't feel it.

"She's fine," Buck answers, "I'm Buck and this is Lena Bosko."

"Full name, huh?" The girl questions as Bosko blushes. Wow, Buck has never seen her like this. Kind of a little karma for all of the teasing Celina and Buck have had to endure this whole trip. The girl continues, "Well, it's nice to meet you. I'm Lucy Donato."

"It's nice to meet you too! I see my girlfriend calling for me, but," Buck pushes Bosko more towards Lucy, "You should get to know Bosko!"

Lucy smirks and Bosko's jaw is dropped. Buck runs away. When he reaches Celina, Tim, and Ang, he chances a look back. The girls are laughing.

Buck fills everyone in. Bosko comes back over Lucy in tow. Her friends had ditched at some point when she went to go grab another drink. When she had texted them, she found out they dipped for some German men. Ang is horrified at that admission and basically demands she stick with all of them, especially after finding out she is also from LA. Bosko lights up at that. Yeah, Buck reckons she's pretty smitten.

Before the end of the night, all have exchanged numbers with Lucy. Ang and Tim so she has a safety net in case she ever runs into any trouble in LA so she has direct access to two cops. Lucy appreciates the gesture and admits her father and older brothers are all firemen.

"Still, I'd rather have the person with the gun show up as opposed to a hose if there's real danger," Lucy quips.

Buck chimes in and defends firefighters, especially since Bobby is one, "You could still spray a bad guy with a hose and be victorious."

Lucy puts her hands up in surrender, "I'm not against firefighters at all. Hell after college, I'm signing up for the academy. Joining the family business."

Buck laughs, but his heart stings a bit at the family business part. He'd been thinking of firefighting a lot recently, ever since the fire at his old apartment complex. He had dove headfirst to save his neighbor. He didn't second guess himself and even though he wasn't properly prepared, after the dust settled, he found himself enjoying it. He could only imagine having the correct gear on and the adrenaline rush of saving people daily. Actually helping and making a difference. It's not really about being a hero just knowing that he could do anything to help make people's lives better in their worst moments.

Bosko makes sure that Lucy gets on the right train back to her dorm. Tim, Ang, Celina and Buck take turns teasing a blushing Bosko. One joke that Buck cracks makes her chase him the rest of the way to their hotel.

The week continues like that and goes by in a blink of an eye. Many days spent drinking, eating, and just having an amazing time.

A couple of days before Ang and Tim fly out, Tim runs into an old buddy.

The five of them are at a restaurant recommended by some locals when a large commotion is made over a spilled drink. Before any of them can blink, a man is being thrown across the bar.

Shockingly, the man thrown across the bar winds up getting kicked out, while the man who threw him gets given hugs by multiple other patrons.

"There's no way," Tim whispers.

That gets the attention of everyone surrounding him.

Ang turns to look at the man and just full belly laughs.

The three teenagers are confused and alarmed. Even more so when the man, decked out in khaki and camo, makes their way to them.

"Timothy Bradford, as I live and breathe!" The man shouts.

Tim rolls his eyes and gets up. Before Tim can protest, the man envelopes him in a hug.

Celina and Bosko turn to Buck who just shrugs. When they turn to Ang for clarification she just laughs harder.

"McGarrett, still causing chaos everywhere you turn, huh?" Tim asks teasingly.

McGarrett laughs and turns to Ang, who has finally calmed down and stopped her fit of giggles.

"You're the infamous Steve McGarrett? The Steve who got Tim put in a holding cell for a whole weekend because of a dare?" Ang asks, on the verge of a fit of laughter once again, as Tim rubs his temples.

Steve, unfazed and with a shit-eating grin on his face, exclaims, "Yep! We were seeing how many buildings we could jump between without getting caught!"

Tim smacks Steve on the arm, "Impressionable young adults."

Steve finally looks over to Buck, Celina, and Bosko. All three have looks of shock, concern, and utter amusement.

"Why are you both hanging around impressionable young adults?"

"Buck's become our little brother and where he goes, Celina and Bosko follow," Ang explains as she puts out her hand, "Angela Lopez, by the way."

Steve shakes Ang's hand, "I figured. The Reaper's talked about you before."

Ang gives Tim a quizzical look as he responds hands in surrender, "All good things Ang, I swear."

Ang goes to comment when Buck cuts in, "You two just made up so can we please not get into another argument?"

Steve turns to Buck, "I'm guessing you're Buck. Nice to meet you, I'm Steve."

Buck shakes Steve's hand as he moves to Celina and Bosko. Once the introductions are through, Bosko pipes up, "I resent being portrayed as someone who follows Buck around blindly."

"I don't mind," Celina says as she turns to Buck. Both look at each other lovingly and are about to kiss when Bosko throws a piece of her pretzel at them.

"Well, that was unnecessary," Celina turns to Bosko, hands on her hips.

Bosko copies her, "No, it really wasn't."

Tim and Ang nod in agreement as Steve laughs, "Quite the group here."

Buck takes a sip of his beer and looks Steve up and down. Steve returns the gesture. Buck clears his throat, "So what's an army man doing throwing drunk German men across the bar?"

"I'm not an army man," Steve deadpans.

There's a quick uncomfortable silence that Tim breaks, "Smooth Dog here, the mad man he is, is a SEAL."

"I see it," Bosko says.

"Yeah, his aura's reading traumatized and assertive," Celina comments while looking at Steve. Trying to look deep into his soul. Steve doesn't flinch, but he does clear his throat and order another beer.

Buck breaks the awkwardness by admiring Celina, "Babe, I think you hit his aura right on the head."

"I know, I have a gift," Celina brags, huge grin on her face as she drinks her beer.

Bosko changes the subject and asks Steve about how he came to be a SEAL.

Buck must admit he's intrigued himself, but he doesn't show it. Especially since he had promised Tim that he wouldn't join the army. He doesn't want to derail the trip and upset anyone. Tim looks a little nervous that Lena sounds so interested. He may not always show or admit it, but he's become quite protective over Celina and Bosko as well. He's starting viewing them as younger sisters. Like Buck they need some guidance. Ang and Tim are happy to be that for them as well. For now, Buck listens with silent curiosity as Steve answers all of Bosko's questions.

He tells the tale of his mother's early tragic death and how his father become consumed with his work, getting lost in cases and training other cops instead of looking after him and his sister. Eventually, his little sister, Mary, was sent to live with their Aunt Deb who raised her. His Uncle Joe's the one who took him under his wing and guided him to becoming the man he is today. According to Steve, he's not much in contact with any family members. The more Steve talks, the more Buck sees himself in the SEAL. After Buck called the hospital the first time, he tried numerous times. Each nurse he had talked to had always said Maddie was busy, but Buck knew the truth. She was telling them she didn't want to talk and to make up some excuse. They were not very convincing. One time he even heard Maddie tell them to find a way for Buck to stop calling. The nurse didn't need to, he hung up and hasn't called since.

Back to Steve, he's in the middle of telling some more stories of shenanigans he's gotten into with Tim. Ang has her full attention locked on Steve, absorbing everything she can so she can tell everyone back at the station. Celina is amused and Bosko is in awe that Tim, of all people, had convinced Steve and other servicemen to jump a fence to jump into a pool after hours. Buck's pretty surprised, but happy that Tim's able to have some good memories and stories to look back on. He's clearly got a bit of a more wild past than he put on. Buck figures he didn't want to come off as a bad influence to him. Tim finds himself telling many tales of Steve, which Buck figures is a bit of retaliation on his part. It doesn't matter in the end, they're all smiling and having the time of their lives.

When the night ends, Steve gives Celina, Bosko, and Buck his number and email. He lets them know if they have any questions about being a SEAL, he's always willing to help. He can also be an ear if they ever want to talk or vent about Tim and Ang. Tim snickers and Ang is offended.

"There would be no complaints from any of them with me," Ang says, a tone that begs anyone to fight her on the matter. None do, they're smarter than that.

The girls exit the restaurant on a search for some pretzels, leaving Buck, Tim and Steve.

"I'm sorry you've had to deal with family struggles, they're truly the worst," Buck comments as Steve nods, "I emancipated myself from my parents, don't talk to my sister. That's why Tim decided to take me under his wing."

Buck nudges Tim's shoulder and he bumps it back.

"Well, I meant it, reach out any time, Buck," Steve starts, "I see me in you. You'd make a great SEAL, I know it. You've got this sort of quiet fire in you that could be a real asset."

Buck's taken back. While he had been interested in everything the man had to say, he never would have imagined that he'd have something that would be of value to becoming a Navy SEAL. He can see out of the corner of his eye that Tim has his jaw clenched. He thinks Steve's picked up on it too, but neither say anything about it. Buck's sure that he'll hear later from Tim a discouraging statement about the Navy. He knows his pseudo older brother had a bad experience with the army. The only reason Tim had joined in the first place was because 1. he wanted to get away from his abusive father and 2. he felt he had no other choice. Tim had told him that, multiple times.

Buck decides on a pretty neutral response, "Thanks Steve, I appreciate it. I'll definitely reach out."

Steve gives a nod and Buck goes to shake his hand. Instead, Steve pulls Buck into a hug. Steve turns to Tim and does the same.

"Let's not go this long again, Reaper," Steve says bashfully.

"Agreed Smooth Dog," Tim responds, "You know you're welcome in LA with us, any time."

"I'll take you up on that," Steve says with a huge smile on his face.

Buck and Tim exit the restaurant, Tim putting in the location Ang had sent.

They walk in silence, not fully uncomfortable, but there's a bit of tension. Buck knows that it came from Steve's last comment. Even though he wouldn't ever admit it to Tim, he had considered joining the SEALs long before he had become Tim and Ang's puppy. In a way, meeting Steve and confirming that he could excel as a SEAL brought his desire to join back to the surface. Buck really doesn't want to ruin their trip to Oktoberfest, so he opts for reassuring Tim that what Steve has said has not changed his mind.

"I appreciate Steve's kind words, but Tim, at this point in my life, I have NO desire to become a SEAL," Buck turns to Tim and practically begs him to hear him.

"But you've had a desire previously?" Tim questions, silently pleading that Buck's answer is no. Tim knows the struggle of wanting to escape a shitty familial circumstance. It's why he joined the army. How he bonded with Steve. How him and Ang became best friends. Why he gave Buck his card in the diner. He may not be Buck's blood, but he wants better for the young man than he had for himself. He REALLY wants Buck to understand that.

"I don't want to sour our trip, but yes. Before I met you and Ang, I had looked into becoming a SEAL pretty intensively," Buck answers nervously.

Tim doesn't say anything. Before he can, the girls exit the shop they were in with pretzels for each of them. Buck and Tim take them graciously.

Tim raises his pretzel in a toast, "To the last of this trip being as amazing as the rest of it. Prost!"

"PROST!" Everyone cheers.

Buck smiles and he catches Tim do the same, adding a nod of understanding. Buck's sure there will be another conversation about it, but not now. For now, they have one last day in Germany to enjoy.

Notes:

According to Google translate, Prost means Cheers in German. If that's not correct, I will gladly change it!

I hope you all enjoyed this chapter! I'm sorry again for how long it took me. I will not let it go this long without posting again. Any comments are appreciated, I'd love to know your thoughts!

Thanks as always for the support!

Chapter Text

As promised and planned, they are in Madrid during the last week of November to meet up with the Carter-Nashes.

May runs immediately into Buck's arms and Harry follows suit. Bobby and Athena give hugs to Buck and the girls before the kids start begging for tacos. Everyone laughs as they find a taco place that sells euro tacos. They're the best tacos anyone has ever had.

For the most part, Buck spends his time with the Carter-Nashes. Celina and Bosko go to a couple of sights with them, but they mostly branch off on their own. While Bobby and Athena understand, May has a harder time with it. So one afternoon, Athena and May join Bosko and Celina for some shopping. May is thrilled and talks about how she was one of the 'adults' for an afternoon. The afternoon only gets better when Celina suggests that they all get matching bracelets. May squeals and jumps in excitement for a solid hour.

While the girls are off spending a good chunk of change, Bobby, Buck and Harry wander around to as many tapas places they can find. They are happy to enjoy the many different foods offered in the beautiful country they are experiencing.

Bobby even offers to show Buck some recipes when he gets back to LA. Buck's overjoyed. Harry just claps at the prospect of being their taste tester. Bobby and Buck laugh as the two year old stuffs three potatoes in his mouth at once.

When they meet the girls at the hotel, everyone suggests a nap. Problem is, Buck's pretty wired. He finds out that Bobby is too. So while the kids and girls are taking a nap, Bobby buys Buck a drink at the bar nearest to their hotel.

"What's on your mind, kid?" Bobby asks as he sips on his coke.

Buck sighs, "I promised Tim I wouldn't join the army."

"I remember," Bobby replies. Buck thinks he can feel Bobby's nerves radiating off of him as he questions him, "Have you changed your mind?"

"Not about the army," Buck starts as Bobby nods, with a bit of confusion. Before Bobby can ask anything else, Buck finally admits what's been eating at him, "Bobby, I've been considering the SEALs."

Bobby takes that in. Buck takes a sip of his beer as he waits for Bobby's response. He knows that it's tough for Bobby to hear. Especially since the last conversation Bobby and him had had career wise was how he was considering the fire academy. Bobby had been completely shocked, but honored at the revelation that he had played a big part in that desire. Buck still wants to join the fire academy, but he's only 18. He wants to see if he can hack it as a SEAL. He knows he'll excel at the academy, but he wants to see what his limits are.

Steve and him have been chatting on and off since they met in Germany. Steve understands Buck's hesitancy to talk to Tim about his desire to try out for the SEALs. He's offered to talk to him first and break the ice, but Buck declines. He feels if he's going to make the adult decision to join, he needs to be adult enough to tell Tim. Buck's dreading that conversation. Just like he's now dreading the rest of this conversation with Bobby.

"I can't say I'm thrilled, but if you tell me you've thought it through, I'd definitely feel better about it," Bobby says, before he adds, "I care about you, kid. I want what's best for you, always. Athena and I will be here, no matter what."

Buck sniffles, "Thanks Bobby. I've been considering this for about two years, but I've never had the courage to think it was possible until now. I finally have the support system and family of my dreams and I fear that this decision is going to destroy it."

Bobby smiles softly, "Your decision is not going to destroy this family. If training to become a SEAL is what your heart desires, then you should go for it. Don't look back and wonder, kid."

"Thanks pops."

"You're welcome," Bobby answers as Buck stares into his drink. Bobby decides to break Buck out of his trance, squeezing his arm, "Tim will come around. He's just worried about you. He wants more for you than what he had. At the end of the day, he may be upset, but he cares for you too much to let it ruin the bond you guys have."

Buck's grateful that Bobby always knows what to say.

The week comes to a close too fast for his liking. He knows that Celina, Bosko and him will be returning to the states for Christmas and the New Year, but he's going to miss this family he's become a part of.

May tries to keep it together, but she's crying pretty hysterically by the time the goodbyes are said and done. That breaks Buck's heart.

"We'll be back soon, May," Buck assures his little sister.

May holds out her pinky, "Promise?"

Buck smiles, thinking back to all those times Maddie and him used pinky promises as if they were the most sacred things on Earth.

Buck hooks his pinky with May's, "Promise."

Honestly, it feels like Buck blinks after waving goodbye to the Carter-Nashes and he's on a plane himself back to LA for the holidays. Celina, Bosko and Buck will be staying in LA for a few months. They decided it was best to take a break, maybe earn some more cash. Plus, as much as they have been enjoying their travels, all three have missed LA.

Tim and Ang greet them with open arms when they arrive. All are exhausted, but excited for the days to come. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve, after all. Buck had decided with Athena that his return would be a surprise for Bobby and the kids. So Buck plans to head to their house for Christmas Day with Tim & Ang after they decide to do Christmas Eve on their own.Thankfully, Bobby, Athena, Ang and Tim have off on Christmas this year, so it will be a joyous, family filled holiday for everyone.

Ang is spending Christmas Eve with her family. All her brothers are in the same place this year so her mom’s having a huge feast. Tim and Buck are invited, but they respectfully decline. Ang’s mom, Emilia, insists if they won’t come to dinner then they at least join for dessert. The boys agree to that.

Before then, Buck and Tim head to an Italian restaurant for Christmas Eve dinner. Buck learns that Christmas Eve was actually always a bigger deal for Tim’s family, with a feast of seven fishes being served. It’s why Tim chose this restaurant specifically. The owners offer a seven course fish dinner. Thankfully, Buck does enjoy fish.

“What’s your favorite Christmas memory?” Tim asks after they put in their drink orders.

Buck lights up, "The first time Maddie showed me the Grinch, I became obsessed. The rec center in our town had put on this big Christmas fair and there was so many Grinch themed treats. I even got to meet him. It was my favorite day for a long while. What about you?"

Tim mulls it over as their drinks are placed in front of them, "Other than the very extensive Christmas Eve dinners, I'd have to say my first Christmas at the station. Grey had decked the station out and we'd all gathered in the roll call room after shift to have dinner. It was really nice and familial. Not everyone stayed though since they had families to get home to, but for those of us that did? A really special bond was formed."

Buck smiles at that as he takes a sip of his drink. Tim doesn't show his softer side to everyone, but those of them that get to see it? It's really nice to see the man who took him in, who's become his brother in all but blood, look lighter as he recounts the more joyous parts of his life. Especially since for the most part, Tim was not dealt the best hand.

The first course comes out and wow. Buck has staring at his seafood salad, his mouth watering. Tim snaps a photo of him and sends it to Ang. Ang sends back a voice recording of her cackling. Buck vows to get back at Tim before taking a bite. Damn, that's some good seafood. Tim's face mimics Buck's as well. Their plates are wiped clean before the waiter can come over and say boo.

Tim and Buck talk about everything that Buck plans to do now that he's back in LA. Both are smart enough not to bring up careers. Neither wants to put a damper on the holiday.

Just as course number two comes out, Buck mentions that he wants to take Celina away for a little weekend getaway once they're all settled in again.

Tim digs into his calamari as he advises Buck on the trip, "I know you were just traveling around Europe with her, but this will be just you two. It'll be a good test to your relationship. Be careful, have fun, and be respectful of her."

Buck swallows his calamari and puts his hand to his heart, "I will be the pinnacle of a gentleman."

"I don't doubt it," Tim responds, "Just, it'll be different when it's just you two. A weekend away's a really long date that doesn't end until you're back. There's no real buffer. I think it'll be good for you two to know where you're at in your relationship."

"My own personal relationship guru," Buck teases, "I'm honored to be your student."

Tim rolls his eyes. Courses three, four and five are more of the same, light banter. Buck tries zuppa da mussels for the first time and he is instantly in love. Crab stuffed shells come after. Another hit in Buck's eyes. Then, shrimp fra diavolo with linguine makes it's way over to them. Buck can only imagine this is what heaven feels like. When he looks over at Tim, he finds the man looking just as happy.

As a piece of halibut and vegetables is placed in front of them for course number six is when Tim brings up Steve.

"McGarrett's going to be in town for New Year's," Tim comments as he slices into his fish, "He's staying over so the house will be a little crowded."

Buck nods and takes a bite of his own, "It'll be nice to see him again."

"I agree," Tim notes and then clears his throat, "You should definitely use some of the time while he's here to find out what training's really like. Get some insight and advice."

Buck looks at Tim, confusion written all over his face. Tim is calm, not judging or upset, just resigned. When Buck doesn't answer, Tim looks up at him, quirking an eyebrow.

"You okay?"

"Who are you and what did you do to Tim?"

Tim puts down his silverware and folds his hands in front of him, sighing, "I understand determination and a need to prove yourself. Not just to others, but yourself. If the SEALs is where you feel you need to be right now, well, I'd like you to become acquainted through the best damn SEAL I know."

Buck's dumbfounded. It's a complete 180.

Tim squirms a little. The man is never uncomfortable like that. He's being pretty vulnerable and Buck knows that's not easy for him.

"That means a lot Tim," Buck says as he looks to Tim, trying to get him to understand that him being on his side means everything, "What changed?"

Tim cuts another piece of his fish and eats it before responding, Buck does the same. Tim sighs, "I wish I had a support system going into it. Maybe then I could've had a better experience. We're similar Buck, but we're not the same. That being said, I'll repeat it over and over again, I want to be for you what I wish I had. I don't want you to feel so backed into a corner that you feel like you have to run away from anyone of us here in LA."

Buck's teary at Tim's admission. He needs to let Tim know that there's nothing that's making him happier right now than him being on his side.

"I am so thankful you came into the diner," Buck starts as a tear escapes his eyes, "Your support means EVERYTHING. I could never run away from any of you. You're my family. I'd be nowhere if it weren't for you."

Tim smiles softly at the admission and squeezes Buck's hand before digging back into his fish. Buck wipes the tears that have fallen and then does the same. The two finish their halibut in relative silence. When the waiter brings out the last course, a buttered lobster tail risotto, both fall back into the rhythm from before. The tail is larger than Buck's hand !! Buck doesn't waste any time digging in. Yep, this is definitely the best (and largest) dish of the night!

"This is by far my favorite dish," Buck admits.

Tim laughs, "Yeah, definitely the perfect dish to end on."

The two discuss hikes that they plan to go on on their off days. They vow to drag Ang on at least one of them. She won't love being woken up at the crack of dawn, but if they offer her a meal after, she could be more receptive to it. After all, the way to Ang's heart is through her stomach. A foodie through and through.

When the dishes are cleared and dessert declined, the bill comes over. Buck grabs for it, but Tim gets to it first.

"Tim, let me pay for my meal," Buck insists as Tim put his card down.

"Don't worry about it," Tim says as he hands his card to the waiter to process.

Buck persists, "Come on. You've done enough for me. Please let me pay."

Tim shakes his head no, "It's your first proper Christmas Eve. Just say thank you."

Buck goes to protest, but Tim gives him a stern look. Buck just sighs and whispers thank you. He wonders to himself if Tim secretly has money. He'd never ask him that. Sober. Too bad they're not still in Germany.

The two drive over to Emilia's house, cookies in hand. They're met with a celebration of epic proportions and a lot of competitiveness. Apparently, one of Ang's older brothers had brought out the board games and currently, Ang is not on the winning side of things. This does not bode well with anyone in the vicinity. Ang does NOT like to lose.

In the end, many board games are played. So even though Ang lost the first couple, she's victorious in the end of multiple others.

Emilia keeps piling cookies and pastries on Buck and Tim's plates. Both find it rude to deny eating the woman's baked goods. They're pretty full by the end of it all, but the smiles never leave their faces.

Photos are taken and gifts are exchanged. Buck's taken a back by receiving a gift from Emilia. So is Tim. Emilia tells them that they are now a part of her tradition. Each year she buys her kids matching pajamas to change into for the rest of the evening. This year it's a pair of pajamas with a Christmas light design. All change into it quickly as another picture is snapped. Buck sets the timer so that no one is left out of the picture.

It's the best holiday Buck could've asked for AND there's still another day to go. Buck had never felt such love as he has being surrounded by the Lopezes and Tim. It's just a cheerful celebration. It's filled with good company, good desserts, and playful banter. It's the complete opposite of his experiences with Christmases in the past.

Maddie tried her hardest to make the holiday season memorable and happy for Buck, but it all came crashing down after she went away to boarding school. Whenever she wasn't home, his parents acted as if it were any other day. This led Buck to believe it was. He learned at an early age never to expect kindness, gratitude, presents, hell even a happy memory from his parents.

Buck and Tim bid the Lopezes farewell at just after 2 AM. Buck hops into bed and instantly falls asleep with a smile on his face.

His alarm blares barely 6 hours later. He had agreed to be at the Carter-Nash residence at just about nine so that they could have a whole day celebration after the initial surprise for Bobby and the kids.

Tim and Ang were meeting them later at around lunchtime so that the little family unit could have some time together. Athena had insisted they wouldn't be intruding, but Tim and Ang had a breakfast tradition to follow through with before meeting them. When Buck walked into the living room, he found many presents, but no Tim. He had left a note stating that Grey had called him and Ang for something, but to feel free to open his gifts. Buck texted Tim and Ang a "Merry Christmas!" and a vow to wait for them all to be together to exchange gifts later on.

Buck arrives at the Carter-Nash home right before 9. He decides to FaceTime Athena. May and Harry fill the screen as they start rattling off and showing Buck their toys that they received from Santa. Athena and Bobby can be heard chuckling in the background. When May asks Buck what country he's in, he hangs up the phone and goes to knock on the door.

Buck can hear May's cry from behind the door as he knocks on it. He hears Bobby soothing May and when the door opens, he's met with the father-daughter pair. May screams with joy and launches herself at Buck.

"Merry Christmas May May!" Buck exclaims as he catches her and hugs her tight.

"Merry Christmas Buck!" May responds as Harry runs to the door and squeals as well. Harry runs into Buck's legs, hugging them. Buck laughs and then looks at Bobby, who's just standing there in shock. Athena snaps photos of it all.

That seems to snap Bobby out of it and in no time Buck's ushered in. A big hug awaits him from each pseudo parent. Both May and Harry question where their gifts are as Athena and Bobby reprimand them for being impolite. Buck just laughs and grabs them from the car.

Buck gifts May a couple of Barbies and a nail polish set. He gifts Harry a lego set and some Hot Wheels. Both thank Buck and rip open the packages to start playing. May insists later on she'll have to paint Buck's nails. He agrees.

He has gifts for Athena and Bobby as well. Necklaces he found in Italy for them. They're matching. He also got them each a trinket from Malta. Both thank him and pass him gifts.

"You didn't need to get me anything," Buck says as he rips open his first gift, a watch. It's gorgeous.

Athena rolls her eyes, "Of course we did, baby."

"Plus, you deserve a whole lot more than what we can offer you," Bobby comments.

Now it's Buck's turn to roll his eyes, "That's not true. You guys are the best thing to ever happen to me."

Both adults squeeze Buck.

Buck opens up a journal and keychain with a photo of the five of them in Spain.

"Thanks so much," Buck says as he puts the keychain on his keys.

"There's one more," Bobby tells Buck, hints of mischief, hope, and nervousness in his eyes. He sees the same in Athena's eyes.

May and Harry come over with a box and place it in Buck's lap before sitting down on either side of him.

When Buck opens the box, he finds a stack of papers. Before he looks too closely at them, he sees the question written in the box:

Will you officially be our big brother?

Buck blinks in shock, unable to process what he's reading. May and Harry are bouncing with anticipation and excitement as Athena and Bobby smile, but their nerves become clearer the more time Buck takes without responding. He looks down at the papers again. It's an Adult Adoption Form.

Tears escape Buck as he nervously asks, "Are you sure?"

"You're the piece we've been missing, baby," Athena answers softly.

"Our family became complete that day on the beach, kid," Bobby assures as Buck wipes the tears off his cheeks. He looks at each of them, only seeing sincerity and pure joy.

Buck gives the easiest answer of his life, "Yes, I'd love nothing more than to be a Carter-Nash!"

Cheers erupt as the four of them hug Buck.

He signs the papers: name change and all. Bye bye Evan Buckley and hello Buck Carter-Nash.

The smile doesn't leave Buck's face. True to his word, Bobby starts showing Buck how to make lasagna. Bobby had wanted to start with breakfast foods, but since they needed lunch for the holiday, he figured lasagna could also be easy enough. As the lasagna's in the oven, he plays with May and Harry as carols are on in the background. Bobby and Athena look on to their kids with fond smiles.

Tim and Ang arrive right at one. The lasagna's out of the oven and ready to be eaten. Everyone digs in and instantly compliments fly Bobby's way.

Bobby smiles, "You'll have to compliment my sous chef too. My son helped."

Buck blushes as Ang and Tim look to him with a knowing smile.

"Guess that means you said yes," Tim comments as he takes another bite of the lasagna.

Buck nods enthusiastically.

Ang laughs. She comments with a happy, but vulnerable undertone, "We're happy for you. Just don't forget about us now that you are one of the Carter-Nashes."

Buck squeezes Ang's hand as he says, "Never."

More gifts are exchanged after lunch. Buck gets his nails painted by May and so does Ang. Harry and Tim race toy cars. Bobby and Athena bring out crafts for them to do together as a family along with some cookies to snack on while they do so before dinner.

With the crafts completed and cookie tray demolished, Bobby decides he's not in the mood to cook again. He orders a bunch of Chinese food for them all to share. They chow down and exchange holiday stories from years past. Buck offers his Grinch story again. All three recount fun stories from the night before as well.

May and Harry supply that they heard Santa and his reindeers on the roof the night before. All smile and just are happy to be surrounded by such Christmas cheer.

Buck says good night to his siblings and parents ( he still cannot believe that he gets to say & do that now!) and heads back to Tim's to open gifts with his older siblings.

Tim gifts Buck a Swiss army knife and a Stein he got him while they were in Germany. Ang also receives a Stein and a bracelet from Tim. Buck gifts Ang a similar necklace that he bought Athena. She loves it. Buck hands Tim leather wallet that he bought in Italy. Tim takes the cards out of his old wallet and transfers them to the new wallet immediately.

"Sap," Ang comments smirking.

Tim sticks his tongue out at her as Buck and Ang laugh. The three settle in with some popcorn for a movie. They all agree on the Grinch. Buck, for the second night in a row, goes to sleep with a huge smile on his face.

He cannot wait for more holidays to come.

It's by far the best Christmas he's had. Ever.

As he wakes up the next morning, he starts thinking more about his future. He walks into the kitchen to find Steve already at the table and Tim at the stove. Steve gives Buck a hug and gestures for the seat next to him. Instantly, a conversation about being a SEAL is started. Tim even chimes in with concerns, questions, and words of encouragement.

Buck cannot believe how great is life is. He has plans for dinner with Celina and then after to exchange gifts with her and Bosko. The next day, he's going to see May in her winter dance recital. Steve, Tim, Ang, and Buck are heading on a food tour of the city, at Steve's request.

Plus, now that Tim's on board, Buck believes telling everyone else his plan to enlist as a SEAL will be an easier venture. Oh, how wrong he is.

Notes:

I made Tim a softie because I believe he secretly is one LOL (If how he is with Lucy on the show is anything to go by!)

Your kind words mean a lot, thanks as always for the support :)

Chapter 5: Kid, Not Sir

Summary:

Buck tells his family about his plan to become a SEAL.

Notes:

I have to apologize. It’s not an excuse, life just got in the way and I had to pause my writing. I finally found my groove again. I sort of decided to change directions when this thought came to me and I went with it. I'm not changing it so much that the tags don't apply anymore. It is a shorter chapter as I'm getting back into the swing of this fic. I hope you enjoy it though :)

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Buck feels like he’s in a fog. He can’t explain it. The last thing he remembers is the argument him and Celina got into that probably wound up with him girlfriendless. Is that even a word?

This is besides the point. Buck finally thought he found his footing in life. He has his family, one who actually loves him and doesn’t see him as an inconvenience. He has friends, he never had that before LA. He HAD his girlfriend. He can’t fully remember why he’s referring to Celina in the past tense.

“Just sit still sir,” Buck hears somewhere off to the side.

Buck goes to turn his neck, but he’s stopped.

“Sir please,” the random man tries again.

Buck, the confused, smartass that he is, responds, “I’m not even nineteen, so if you’re talking with me, I can’t be a sir.”

“Is kid better or worse?” The man asks, a hint of teasing in his tone, as a light is shown in his face, making him wince and shut his eyes. Huh, he hadn’t realized he’d opened them.

“My dad calls me kid,” Buck answers and then coughs. Damn, his neck and his head are KILLING HIM.

“Good to know,” the man tries again, “do you remember what happened?”

Buck goes to shake his head, but is reprimanded.

“You still have to stay still. Yes or no, kid?”

Buck finds this man quite rude.

“I promise I’ll be nicer once we’ve gone through my checklist, but I need an answer first.”

Could this man read his thoughts?

“Cap, the kid’s really disoriented.”

That’s the last thing Buck hears before all he sees is black.

EARLIER THAT DAY

Buck gathers everyone around to tell them how he’s signed up for SEAL training. The response is…less than enthusiastic.

Bobby and Tim give him the support they said they would, but everyone else is, upset is not describing it enough, but livid seems like too far.

Scratch that, looking at his mama’s face, she’s fuming. Maybe livid’s not descriptive enough either.

Celina looks like she’s about ready to vomit.

The Greys aren’t necessarily thrilled, but they understand the need to try and see if he can do it. For himself, no one else. Buck promises.

Ang is just silent. Ang has NEVER been silent the entire time he’s known her.

May, Harry, and Dominique (Wade and Luna’s daughter) are so confused they start to cry.

Lena’s the only one sporting a smile, “Sweet, I’ll join you.”

That doesn’t help the vibe. Everyone seems to more or less snap out of it. All at once there’s yelling. Bobby and Tim come to Buck’s defense as Athena and Celina are screaming in protest. The Greys try to calm everything down, but they also turn their focus turn the kids. Ang is still silent.

Buck, now insanely overwhelmed, cannot believe he’s the one tearing this family apart. This is his fault. He’s broken his promise to Tim. He could’ve just signed up for the academy like him and his pops had been talking about, but no, he had to be a brat and drive this wedge between everyone. No wonder his parents never wanted to be bothered by him. Maddie. Now, he’s added another set of parents & siblings to that list. A girlfriend too. God, this is all his fault.

Buck’s broken out of his spiral by Tim.

“I wasn’t thrilled either, but he’s determined! We have to let him try, it could lead to something worse if we don’t support him!” Tim yells as Athena glares at him.

Athena huffs, “Sure, let’s just let him go halfway across the world to be launched in the middle of a war in the sector of the military that’s infamous for being the most dangerous.”

“Because he would’ve been completely safe as a firefighter?” Tim barks back.

“He’d be here! No matter how difficult, we’d have his back. We can’t do that if he’s in the middle of nowhere!” Athena’s frantic and giving him the stare down she gives most perps. He knows that stare, he had gone on a ride along with her a few days after his last birthday. He would hate to be Tim right now. Hell, he doesn’t even like being himself right now.

“Buck, maybe we step outside,” Lena offers. Buck shakes his head in agreeance, but right as they reach the door, he hears the cruelest thing he could, from the last person he expects to hear it.

“Celina, you can’t change his mind and you shouldn’t want to,” Bobby says defending the man who’s his in all, but blood. A ghost of a smile paints Buck’s face to be shattered seconds later.

Celina laughs dryly, “Sure, Bobby let’s just let him throw away everything. He already ran away once, this is just him doing it again. Guess we’re all not good enough for him! Maybe family number three will be just right!”

That stops every argument. It even snaps Ang out of her stupor. Thankfully, Wade and Luna decided to take the kids out for ice cream when nothing became calmer. Celina, understanding the words that just left her mouth, looks stunned and guilty.

Buck runs out. After all, that’s all he’s good at. He thinks he hears Tim, Bobby and Lena call out for him. He’s already off before he can even consider turning back to see if he’s right.

Buck finally gets his breathing under control as he stops at a red light. He must’ve been on autopilot, he doesn’t even recognize where he is. He doesn’t have the opportunity to focus on that for long, unfortunately, as he notices headlights headed right for him. He doesn’t even get the chance to react before the worst pain he’s experienced in his short lifetime radiates through his body and he loses consciousness.

——————————————————————-

Bobby’s pacing as Athena’s comforting a sobbing Celina. Lena just looks dumbfounded as Tim is frantically and repeatedly calling Buck’s phone.

Ang, having found her voice, asks nervously, “Still nothing?”

Tim frustrated, looks at her in disbelief, “No, he answered five minutes ago, but we decided in code it would be more fun to keep all of you in the dark.”

Angela has tears in her eyes.

“That was unnecessary, Tim,” Athena snaps.

Tim dryly laughs as he looks to Athena, “Oh since all of you were the picture of calm, cool and collected just now? Ang didn’t say anything which is just as bad as if she said something negative like the two of you! Jesus, he was stifled enough as it is in the Buckley household, now he has to feel stifled in the Carter-Nash household too?”

Athena recoils as if she’s been slapped. Tim assumes she feels she has been. Not physically, but emotionally. He does feel bad.

Bobby stops pacing and looks to Tim, a belittling hint in his tone, “That’s not fair, Tim. It’s apples and oranges.”

“Not to him,” Tim whispers.

Tim might as well have screamed it. Silence once more as Athena, Celina & Ang realize how royally they messed up.

The silence doesn’t last long as Tim’s phone rings. Tim sighs in relief as he picks up.

Relief turns to concern turns to horror as he asks, “What hospital?”

Tim’s taking in whatever Buck is telling him as Bobby signals for him to put it on speaker. Tim can’t. His brain’s malfunctioning. Instead of doing what Bobby’s asking, he answers, “Is it not up to his parents?”

Alarm spreads through the remaining adults. Bobby, finally, grabs the phone from Tim.

As he puts the phone on speaker, everyone catches the tail end of the speaker, “-you’re his medical proxy. He doesn’t have much time. Do we amputate or not?”

Gasps and cries escape everyone. This time, Bobby remains silent.

Tim’s looks to everyone, but finds no help. It’s up to him. He takes a deep breath, grits his teeth, and says, “I’d rather him lose his leg, than lose his life. You have my permission to amputate.”

Tim hangs up the phone and heads towards the door. No one moves. Tim turns back to them, “Well, guess everyone, but Buck gets their wish. He won’t be able to be a SEAL. Hell, he may never be able to become a firefighter…”

“There are firefighters with prosthetics. It won’t be easy, but it’s not impossible. If anyone could do it, it’s our son,” Bobby says as he grabs Athena’s hand and squeezes it.

Athena’s eyes shimmer with tears as she looks to everyone, “Well, what are we waiting for? Buck’s going to need us more than ever before.”

At the sergeant’s words, the family files out of the Carter-Nash home and towards St Stephens Hospital. On the way, Bobby calls Luna and Wade, filling them in on the situation. They decide it’s best to keep the kids in the dark for now. Bobby promises them any updates they find out.

It’s grueling as they all wait for news on Buck. They find out all the details from one of the paramedics from the 133 that responded. He didn’t feel right leaving without knowing how the kid would fair. Driver lost control of his car as he went into cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, he slammed right into Buck, who was sitting at a red light. The power of the impact made both cars flip over. Buck’s leg was crushed, twisted & basically became one with the car door. He was quite dazed and confused when he woke up. The paramedic determined a severe concussion. Buck coded once in the ambulance ride over. Thankfully, the paramedic, Howard, was able to revive him. The same couldn’t be said for the other driver.

On hour 10, Dr. Weiss comes into the waiting room calling for the family of Buck Carter-Nash, all stand. Even Howard, who embarrassingly tries sitting back down before Ang stops him.

“He’s lucky. It won’t be an easy road, but he’s young and he should be able bounce back,” the doctor starts explaining, “However, that won’t happen without all of you. He’ll need all the support he can get.”

“He has it,” Celina whispers as she wraps her arms around her and looks down at her stomach, “Always.”

Chapter Text

Buck wakes up three days later. When he wakes up, he's immediately overwhelmed with how many people are in his hospital room. He asks all of them, but Bobby to leave. Tim can't hide his surprise, but no one protests, they just do as he wishes.

A nurse comes in to check his vitals and explains that his doctor will be in within the next few hours. For now, everything looks good. No infections. Buck glances at the place his leg used to be and winces. The nurse leaves the father-son duo so they can have some privacy.

"What happened?" Buck asks softly. If Bobby hadn't been listening for it, he would've missed it.

Bobby, tears in his eyes, recounts the whole day to Buck. The screaming matches, the horrifying phone call about Buck's accident, the accident itself, and of course the sheer fear and concern every single one of them had. Ultimately, as Buck's medical proxy, it was Tim's decision for Buck's leg to be amputated.

"Tim had no choice, kid. You wouldn't be here right now if you kept the leg," Bobby admits after a few minutes of Buck staring at the place his leg used to be in silence.

Tim gets his wish, Buck thinks bitterly. No more being a SEAL for him. It checks out since Buck's never truly gotten his way before anyway. He thinks back to what Bobby told him in Madrid, how him expressing his desire to be a SEAL wouldn't tear them apart. It did though.

From day one, the support from Tim and Bobby has been forced. A feeling that if no one supported Buck, he'd feel backed into a wall and as if he was alone in the world again. They both know that's a fear of his, they've discussed it at length. Buck may never get his wishes, but the universe sure does.

He doesn't think he'll be able to face Tim, let alone anyone else in their family besides Bobby. Now, Buck knows that's unfair, but he guesses so is life. Especially his life. It's not like the last time he saw everyone was pleasant.

Maybe family number three will be just right! Celina's words echo in his brain. A new mantra to live by.

"Kid, say something," Bobby pleads.

Buck looks up at him, stone cold, and says, "Tell everyone to go home."

Bobby scrunches his eyebrows, "I can, but know Athena, Celina and Ang have apologies at the ready. We only all want to be here for you-"

"Now that I won't ever be a SEAL?" Buck questions, pure anger seeping through.

"You don't have to accept their apologies right away, Buck. It was wrong how everyone attacked you, okay? They know that, they were just surprised and concerned-"

"I don't want to hear it, Robert," Buck answers as Bobby stops talking. He knows he's hurt his adoptive father by calling him his full name. Right now, Buck finds he doesn't care as he continues, "I feel as though my birth parents indifference would've been better than everyone's reaction. The people I've come to love, hell probably more than I love myself, my FAMILY, couldn't even be happy for me. I get it, it's dangerous, but so's being a cop and a firefighter. Yes, you and Tim defended me, but let's be real, it's not like you two were thrilled about it either. Your support was given begrudgingly."

Bobby's at a loss for words. He can't argue and say Buck's wrong. While he defended his son, he couldn't say his support was given whole heartedly. Both know it wasn't.

"I'm sorry," Bobby apologizes as he takes a deep breath, "It's a newer, scarier feeling, my love for you-"

"Thanks, I'll be sure to be less of a nuisance for the next family," Buck snaps.

Bobby turns to Buck, "Kid, you need to let me finish. Be upset, snap, but you have to know that's NOT where my statement was going."

Buck shrugs, but doesn't say anything else. Bobby takes that as his sign to continue, "May and Harry, I've been a father to them their whole lives. The love was and always will be there from the second they entered this world. There was nobody else before Athena and I. Now, you're a teenager who has had to deal with more adult feelings and circumstances than most people would by the time they're thirty. I loved you instantly, but I knew it was going to take time for you to see that, so I had to prove it. That's thanks to Phillip and Margaret. If I ever meet them, it won't be pretty. Anyway, my point is that you're so easy to love, but I know it's hard for you to accept the unconditional love we have for you. I'll repeat it every day until it sinks in, Buck."

Buck takes it in as tears spring to his eyes, "Felt pretty conditional the other day."

Bobby sighs, but shakes his head in understanding, "And that is something nobody wanted you to feel. Their love came out as fear and concern, in harsher tones than it should have. That's on them. No family is going to be perfect 365 days out of the year. What matters is that we don't let these situations break us apart. We won't let it. I know it'll take a while for it to sink in, but a disagreement or argument isn't the end. It's a blip in the grand scheme of things. Now, unfortunately, this disagreement ties in with a situation that you will have to deal with for the rest of your life. Just because you're an amputee shouldn't stop you from anything your heart wishes to accomplish. Maybe SEAL training's out of the running, but you can still help and do good in other ways."

Bobby turns towards the nightstand and grabs a pamphlet. He fiddles with it before looking at Buck again, "The academy's still an option. There's plenty of firefighters countrywide that have prosthetics. Is it easy? No, but then again, even if you went into the academy with both legs, it wouldn't have been."

Buck smiles at that. It doesn't reach his eyes, but Bobby's beaming seeing his son show an expression other than pure anguish. Bobby hands him the pamphlet.

"Thanks pops. I appreciate you being here by my side and helping me through this," Buck responds after a few minutes of comfortable silence, "But I hope it's okay that I'm just not ready to see anyone else right now."

Bobby nods, but can't stop himself from wondering why he wouldn't want to see Tim.

Bobby reaches out and squeezes Buck's hand. Both men have tears in their eyes, as Bobby says, "There's nowhere else I'd rather be. I won't push you to see anyone, but know there's no place anyone else would rather be too. We're here to stay."

And that's ultimately what breaks Buck. Bobby holds his son as he sobs. It could've been minutes or hours, but Bobby doesn't let go.

Eventually, they break a part when they hear someone clearing their throat. They turn to see who Buck can only assume is his doctor. Buck gives a tight smile as he wipes his tears and watches the doc pick up his chart.

Bobby addresses the doctor first, "Dr. Weiss, how are you?"

"Alright, glad to see our patient here is up. Buck, how are you feeling?" Dr. Weiss asks as he looks to the monitor.

"As if I've gone through a meat grinder physically and emotionally," Buck answers, staring, once again, at the spot his leg used to be.

"That's understandable," Dr. Weiss responds, "It won't be an easy road, but I've seen how your family has rallied over these last few days. Your parents and brother haven't even left the hospital since you've been admitted. While you may not feel quite lucky because of the life altering accident, you should feel lucky to have all of them. I'm sorry to say this is not the case with most of my other patients."

Buck just nods, filled with way too many emotions to acknowledge the doc and wrap his head around what he's saying. Guess he can say he's been on both sides of that: neglect with the Buckleys & love from his family. Thank god for his pops, who picks up Buck's slack.

"I know we've discussed some options he has with my insurance, doc, but I'd love for Buck to hear them as well. This way he can start deciding how he wants to move forward," Bobby states as he grabs Buck's hand to give it a squeeze.

Dr. Weiss nods his head in agreement, "Should we grab your wife and Tim-"

"No," Buck interrupts, "Just me and Bobby."

Dr. Weiss gives Bobby a quizzical look, but Bobby just gestures for him to continue. The doctor does as he's told, "Your dad here has excellent insurance for his family. One of the few perks of being a firefighter in LA."

Bobby thinks to himself how grateful he is that he added Buck to his health insurance the day after the adoption went through. They could've been in a very different scenario now if he hadn't. He shakes that thought, but nods his head in agreement as Dr. Weiss lists the options and duration of recovery with each one. Buck doesn't really need to think too hard on it though as he knows his next course of action is to join the academy. So, thankfully with Bobby's insurance, he will be able to pick out two prosthetics: one that would be able to withstand his work as a firefighter and an everyday one. He also will get forearm crutches and a wheelchair if he pleases. Buck says yes to the crutches immediately, but is more weary with the chair. Dr. Weiss and Bobby don't push, but they let him know the option will be there if he so chooses in the future.

"So, I know you probably want a timeline," Dr. Weiss continues after he hands Buck and Bobby pamphlets and brochures for various things: therapists, support groups, physical therapists, prosthetics & crutches.

Buck nods as the doctor sighs, "The range can be anywhere from a couple months to a couple of years. You have to learn how to get used to certain daily aspects of your life all over again. As stated before, you're young, have the motivation and the support so I don't see why you can't be up and running within the year. I'm overestimating for the most part, just so no hopes are crushed in the meantime. Positivity will play a huge factor in your healing journey as well."

Buck yawns and then whispers, "Thanks doc."

"Anytime. I'll leave you to rest," Dr. Weiss responds as he watches Buck yawn again, "I'm just going to steal your dad for a minute."

Buck nods sleepily as Bobby gets up. He gives Buck a kiss on the head before joining the doctor in the hall, leaving the door open just a crack in case Buck needs them. He sees that Athena and Tim have been sitting in chairs on the opposite wall and get up to join them.

Both Athena and Tim aren't exactly known for their patience, so they both say in a questioning tone, "So?"

Dr. Weiss doesn't think much of their tones, just answers, "He's in decent spirits for a young adult whose life just got turned upside down. I've had men and women way older than him throw temper tantrums after hearing their news and options going forward."

"Buck's not had the easiest life so far, so I guess he's just used to bad news and situations," Tim comments solemnly as he looks towards the hospital room. Athena gives Tim a loving squeeze on the arm as Tim looks back towards the doctor.

Athena then asks, "What do we do? What CAN we do?"

"Be there for him," Dr. Weiss answers and honestly Bobby can tell that Tim and Athena both are not amused with that answer. Not because they don't want to be there for Buck, but because in their eyes that's a given.

Before either gets snarky, Bobby interjects, "I think what my wife meant was what can we do other than supporting him? There was never a question that we'd do that so..."

"I understand. I did not mean to imply that you wouldn't. As I told Buck, he's lucky to have the support system he has. Most don't get blessed with such a family," Dr. Weiss comments and then takes a deep breath, "I don't think you'll like my other answer. There's not much to be done until the prosthetics come in. He'll of course need to stretch and bathe, things he'll definitely need help with, but the brunt of the physical aspect will happen in physical therapy and beyond. The real challenge right now is mental. So, I'll say it again, be there for him. He may want to push you all away so just be prepared to prove you're serious about going through this journey with him."

Dr. Weiss is paged so he bids them goodbye and runs off to the next patient.

Tim and Athena look to Bobby expectantly. Bobby sighs once more. He's about to break their hearts and he (mostly) doesn't understand why.

"He wants space," Bobby simply says.

"Well, you just heard the doc, so if Athena, Celina and Ang have to beg on their knees-"

Athena rolls her eyes, frustration and exhaustion beyond evident in her tone, "Thanks Tim-"

Bobby doesn't want the argument to go any farther so he cuts them off, "From you too, Tim."

The second the words land, Bobby kind of wishes he hadn't said them. He'll never get the look on Tim's face out of his head. Firstly, Tim recoils back as if he's been hit. The man's always so stoic, but in this moment he's an open book. Anyone could tell Bobby just broke his heart. He's shattered.

Athena, on the other hand, is completely stunned.

"I need a minute," Tim's voice cracks as he speed walks towards the doors. Bobby goes to follow him, but Athena grabs his arm, shaking her head no.

"Let him breathe," Athena tells Bobby as she envelopes in a hug that he melts into, "We'll get through this, baby."

Bobby sure hopes so. He just doesn't want to tell Athena that he's not so optimistic at the moment.

Notes:

Writing Tim's reaction broke my own heart :(

Thinking of making the next chapter mostly surrounding Tim and Ang.

Chapter 7: I Don’t Understand

Summary:

Tim, Ang, Lena and Celina POV, reactions, and emotions for the most part.

Notes:

I know Tim is more on the closed off side emotions wise on the show (unless it's certain people), so that's the same sort of energy I brought to this chapter!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Ang is sitting on a bench outside texting with her mom about the situation when a panicked and upset Tim walks out of the hospital.

Fearing the worst, Ang runs over and basically screams, “What happened?”

Tim shakes his head and opens his mouth to explain, but he can't find the words. Sensing her friend may be like this for at least a few minutes, Ang moves him to sit on the bench she just vacated. Nothing's said as she rubs his back and he tries to regain some composure. Tim's taking pretty staggered breaths. Ang doesn't know what's happening. Buck's finally woken up. This is a good thing. It's what they've all been waiting for. Did something else happen between when he woke up and now? Ang is itching to ask, but in order for her to get an answer, Tim would need to be in the right headspace.

A good fifteen minutes pass before his breathing returns to normal. When Ang turns to him fully she sees his eyes are red and swollen, tear tracks on his face. She hadn't even heard him cry. The anger she has towards his father and the army rises as she realizes they're who showed him how to emote silently.

"Tim," Ang starts as he wipes his face. She doesn't get to say anything else because Tim finds his voice.

"Buck wants space," Tim says as he looks at her for the first time since he walked outside.

"I figured," Ang responds as she tries to keep her own tears at bay, "I am so ready to apologize, but it's understandable that he wouldn't want to see me right away after everything went down. I'm kind of flattered that you didn't know how to tell me so you got so distraught- "

"From me too, Ang," Tim whispers.

Ang is silent once more. If Buck wanting to be a SEAL left her speechless, she wonders what this is. Scratch that, she knows this is next level shock. Space from Athena, Celina and her she understands, but TIM? She's not understanding the logic with that one. While Tim may not have wanted Buck to join the military in the first place, he quickly showed his support. Defended him.

Ang knew from that first day in the diner that Tim was doomed. She knew how much of himself he saw in Buck. How much he wanted to help him. That's why he left his card. He agonized over it after he didn't hear anything from the kid. Fearing he was wrong to leave it. What if he thought he was weird? A creep? Ang couldn't stand it anymore. She begged Wade and Luna to go to the diner to get the kid's vibe. When they reported his interest in first responders, Ang encouraged Tim to go back.

"Just go and see what he has to say," Ang had told Tim, "If he gives the vibe that he wants to be left alone, then at least you'll get a burger out of the deal. You won't know if you don't try."

Tim had taken a deep breath and left the station to go to the diner. Their next shift he talked nonstop about Buck.

"Buck's only seventeen! He's been emancipated for over a year. Can you believe that?"

"His parents seemingly had him to neglect him. Isn't that so messed up?"

"His own sister left him behind. Stopped calling which essentially meant she stopped caring about him in my opinion."

"Good riddance! Those were his father's last words to him. Who says that to their son?"

Ang knew he was not going to leave Buck to go through this life alone and she knew once Tim was attached, she wasn't far behind.

Buck's their little brother in all but blood. They all have this bond forged through trauma and love. She knows that her bond with Buck isn't the same as Tim's though. He's closer with Tim. Ang knows that Tim would do anything for Buck, just as she knows the opposite is true. Buck would never want to do anything to let Tim down.

All three know what it's like to be left behind. How much it burns and leaves the deepest hurt in your soul. So she doesn't get it. Why does Buck need space from Tim? The same Buck that practically begged for Tim to stay after hours of helping Buck reorganize his apartment.

The same Buck that was thrilled to be viewed as someone's little brother again.

The same Buck who was crushing on Celina and had no idea how to proceed. Looking to Tim and Ang for guidance.

The same Buck who was so overjoyed at the idea that people wanted to celebrate him and go out of their way to plan a special birthday like one he'd never had before.

The same Buck that was so afraid to lose them after how poorly they both reacted to Europe.

The same Buck that agonized over Tim's isolation when he had gotten back together with the witch, she means Isabel, when he was traveling.

The same Buck that was devastated to hear that the two of them were fighting, fearing the worst when he would have to return. Would he have to choose? Who would he have chosen? There's no doubt in her mind he would've chosen Tim. So why is he not choosing him now?

"I see we've lost our voice again," Tim comments weakly. Ang can tell there's no malice, he's just found the silence uncomfortable.

"Sorry, just confused. Plus, I don't really know what to say," Ang admits. It's true. She's been at a loss for words recently. When Buck announced his SEAL training, so many emotions ran through her. Fear being the top one. She did NOT want to lose her brother to war. She admits that silence wasn't the way to go, but she just, anything she wanted to say got stuck in her throat. She knows no answer is an answer itself, but her intention was not to hurt Buck. She knows Athena's wasn't either. Celina, she's not so sure.

Anyway, she'll sort through this later, for now, she has Tim to worry about.

"I could only imagine what's going through his head," Tim says after letting Ang's statement sink in, "But he has to know that if there was another way, he'd have both his legs. I had no choice, Ang. Live with one leg for the rest of his life or have no life at all? I thought the choice was obvious. Is that why he doesn't want to see me? I was one of two people who didn't obliterate him when he made his announcement and now..."

Tim bites his lip in attempt to stop more tears from flowing. Tim doesn't tend to wear his heart on his sleeve in a way. To the people he loves, respects and cares for, sure, it's more or less obvious, but even then it's subtle. Not big or loud in any sense. That's Buck. You never need to guess how he feels about someone. He lets them know. He shows it. She tends to land in the middle of the both of them. As the old saying goes, opposites do attract. She'll never understand how or why, but she's glad they do. If they didn't, Buck wouldn't be in their life. Hell, Tim might not be in hers.

Ang sighs, "I can't answer that. Only Buck can. I'm sure he doesn't blame you, Tim, but I could see it being a lot for him to take in. This would be a lot for anyone to process, hell, it's a lot for me, but for Buck? Who felt like he'd finally found a path to go down for a while instead of just wandering, I could see it overwhelming him. Feeling as though he's as lost and alone as he was before LA. Before you. Before everyone else who spent the last three days pacing a hospital waiting room. Maybe he just can't face that yet."

Tim closes his eyes before he responds, an emotion that Ang can't fully place seeping through, "But what does that have to do with needing space from me? As if I'd judge him? I'd never do that."

Ang doesn't know what else to say without repeating herself, so she just opens her arms for Tim. Shockingly and thankfully, he falls into them as he cries once more. She can't hear him, but she can feel his tears. In the end, she's crying right alongside him.

That's how Bobby finds them not long after.

Ang spots him first. Her and Tim separate. She makes up same lame excuse about needing a muffin and runs inside. Ang hates muffins.

Bobby sits beside Tim. This has to be the world's most awkward and uncomfortable silence.

"I'm sorry," Bobby says as he breaks the silence. Tim expects there to be more, but there's not.

Tim shakes his head, "Not your fault. Not anyone's fault."

Bobby fiddles with his thumbs, "He told me he felt completely unsupported-"

Tim whips his head to Bobby, ready to cut him off, but Bobby puts up his hand. Tim bites his tongue, but lets the older man continue, "Said even though we supported him, he knew it wasn't fully willingly. Knew we didn't love his want to be a SEAL either. I couldn't argue, at least on my behalf, since he wasn't fully wrong. I love him and I want what's best for him. I want the future he craves for himself, but yeah, when he told me, I hated the idea. I just guess I had the decency not to yell it at him. I saw the determination and fear so I told him I'd stand by his decision. By him. I told him it wouldn't break us all apart..."

Tim doesn't look at Bobby as he responds, "So maybe I wasn't thrilled. I know it showed on my face that night we ran into Steve in Germany, but dammit, I thought I was doing my best to shove it all down. I saw his face when Steve was sharing stories and when he said he could see Buck excelling as a SEAL. The joy, the fight, the clear need to prove himself. I also saw his face though when he tried hiding all of that for my sake. How he'd try to brush off his desire. I didn't want that for him. That makes me no better than anyone else who had ever doubted him. So, I encouraged him to talk with Steve. I encouraged SEAL training. Even though it DEVASTATED ME. I had no choice when I was his age. Dumbass fuckup. No familial support. No direction. The army was my only way out. I don't know, it felt like I was failing him letting him go towards the military. I also felt like I'd be failing him more though if I stopped him. I didn't want to lose him so I supported him. Now, Bobby, him not wanting to see me feels as though I'm losing him anyway."

Bobby puts his hand on Tim's shoulder, "Buck's been by himself far longer than he's had people in his corner. I think the arguing just left him feeling as he used to. I'm sure Celina did not help that."

"You can say that again," Tim says through gritted teeth, "I can't believe she said that! Maybe the next family will be just right? I get she was upset, but that was next level."

"I can confidently say they probably don't have a lot of time left as a couple," Bobby answers.

Tim snickers, "Buck confirm that?"

"I wish," Bobby admits, "He wasn't silent, but he wasn't overly talkative either."

"I understand concern. I understand fear. I do not understand Celina right now," Tim adds.

"Me neither," Bobby responds as the pair find a comfortable silence to sit in.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lena's leaning against the doorframe in Celina's room. Celina's under a mound of blankets on her bed.

"You'll have to get up and face Buck eventually," Lena tells her, "Especially since he woke up this morning."

"I don't deserve him or his forgiveness," Celina says. Or at least that's what Lena thinks she says, the mound of blankets are making it hard to hear her. Whether she said it or not, Lena hopes Celina believes that sentiment. Harsh, she knows, but so was Celina. She thought Celina and Buck would make it to the end, have the whole shebang. The cutesy proposal, the over-the-top wedding, the house with the picket fence, kids...you get the picture. Now, all she sees is being stuck in the middle of her probably about to broken up two best friends.

She digresses from the task at hand. She gives Celina another minute and when it's up, she strides over to her bed and rips the blankets off of her. Celina shrieks and squints in the light shining from her fan.

"Enough with the pity party. You said some pretty fucked up things. Time to be a big girl and apologize to your boyfriend," Lena tells Celina. All the other woman does is try to grab the blankets back, so there's frustration evident in Lena's tone as she says the next part, "You know, the one in the hospital bed with the amputated leg."

Celina stops going to grab for the blankets, instead curling in herself as tears come again. Lena does not have the patience for this. She loves Celina, she does, but Buck's been her friend longer. She hates to play that card, but in hindsight she's always gotten along better with Buck anyway. They just understood each other. It had taken her time to get used to Celina. Eventually, they all clicked, but it wasn't as effortless as her friendship with Buck. Plus, if she didn't love the girl, she wouldn't have put up with traveling with her for so long.

Again, not the point at the moment.

"You need to get up," Lena demands, "Or I'll send Athena in here to drag your ass out. She will NOT be as nice as I'm being."

Celina doesn't move. Lena rubs her temples. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. When she opens them again, something catches her eye. She'd been so focused on the mound of blankets on the bed that held Celina that she hadn't noticed anything else in the room. Until now.

"No," Lena starts as she looks dumbfounded to the nightstand.

Celina, noticing what Lena saw, moves quickly from her position on the bed, but Lena's faster. She grabs the item off of her nightstand.

"Give it back!" Celina screams as Lena holds her back.

Lena, who's staring at a pregnancy test. A positive pregnancy test.

Lena turns to face Celina. So many more emotions can be seen on Celina's face. Lena's sure the same can be said for her own.

"How long have you known?" Lena asks. She doesn't see a wrapper or box in the garbage so she's a little afraid of the answer.

Celina bites her tongue, "Don't be mad."

"That ship has sailed, Cel," Lena responds, trying to keep her anger in check. Although, it now makes sense why Celina had been upset that day. If she had just told Buck beforehand, maybe everything could've turned out differently. Maybe her best friend wouldn't have to go through such a trauma. Maybe he wouldn't be pushing everyone, but Bobby away right now.

"Two weeks," Celina whispers, avoiding Lena's eyes.

If Lena's jaw could actually hit the floor, she feels it would.

"Two weeks?!" Lena screeches, "I'm guessing he doesn't know because I'm POSITIVE he wouldn't have wanted to be a SEAL anymore. Or maybe he would've, but dammit Celina, so much could've been avoided! He would only have been thrilled about this! Why wouldn't you tell him?"

"We're eighteen, we have our whole lives ahead of us," Celina answers, "I'm not sure I'm ready to be a mom and I know even if he's not ready to be a dad, he'd want the baby."

"Celina, you CANNOT keep this from him, he has a right to know!" Lena's yelling at the top of her lungs. She cannot believe this is happening.

"He doesn't have a job. He's going to be going through one of the toughest times in his life, going to physical therapy and getting used to his life with a prosthetic. It's kinder for him never to know," Celina responds.

This cannot be her life right now.

"Apparently, you don't know Buck at all," Lena says before storming out of Celina's house. Even though Buck may not want to see her right now, she NEEDS to see him.

Notes:

Also, I do really enjoy Celina's character on the show, I know she seems a bit unlikeable right now, but that's not my full intention. As a reminder, her, Lena and Buck are currently only 18 in this fic. Doesn't excuse her behavior or words, but maybe gives some insight to some immaturity I'm writing into her.

I will update when I can! Thank you for reading :)
