Chapter 1: Prologue.

Summary:

Cloud is met with a shocking surprise upon arriving to the Sector 5 church...

Notes:

Hello! :D I am back with my next big project! Surprise, surprise, it's an "Aerith lives" fanfic. Cause there is never enough of them LMAOOOOO, I wanted to throw my hat in the ring and make one of my own!

This is inspired by a manga Krudears, a well-known former Clerith artist, once made. It is called Mermaid, and it's what inspired my fic. I really admired her artwork, it is a shame she was harassed out of the community. I hope someday she feels confident enough to return <3. With that being said, I hope you all enjoy! :)

Chapter Text

The revving of a motorcycle echoes throughout the metallic abandoned wasteland of Midgar, in what was once Sector 5. Cloud maneuvers around the area, cursing under his breath as he runs over a piece of scrap metal, jittering and bouncing his motorcycle. Of course, where else was he off to, than the Sector 5 church. A building damaged, broken, yet it stood on. Resilient, like the yellow flowers still blooming within.

The place where he had met her officially. Aerith.

It had now become a sort of unofficial resting place for her, besides the Forgotten City. Cloud had been driving to the church, as the anniversary of her death was coming up. He needed some space and quiet to honor her. He didn’t blame himself for her death, not anymore. That didn’t mean he hadn’t missed her. Of course he did.

Cloud missed Aerith, almost every day. There were times where he stopped and could only stare at items that reminded him of her. Places, objects, foods, things he wished he could show her. There’s times where he swears he can hear her laugh, or smell the scent of flowers when none are nearby. Deep down, Cloud still yearned for a way he could’ve saved her.

Cloud parks near the entrance, turning the keys and hopping off his motorcycle. He gives a smile, beginning to make his way in. In a way, he can still feel Aerith’s presence here. A warm, inviting one.

He pushes the doors open, nudging a little harder this time around. Sliding in, his eyes first go to the holes remaining in the ceiling. A remnant of the past, fond memories trickling into his mind like a lazy river.

“Helloooo?” Her voice hummed, bringing him back into consciousness. “You okay..?”

His eyes move towards the flower bed. As always, they’re here. Blooming, golden yellow lilies.

“They say you can’t grow flowers here in Midgar, yet they have no trouble blooming here…”

“And they still stand here,” Cloud finds himself speaking out loud, to nobody. He makes his way over towards the pile, to tend to them. However, something moves. It catches his eye, and he turns his head for the source.

Cloud stiffens up, face going pale.

What? What? What?

There, in the lilies, laid a woman. A woman with flowy brown hair, sprawled out behind her, laying over the flowers. Her eyes closed, but they held the color of green. Her dress, pink and reaching the ends of her legs. She had no socks or shoes on, and she was lying on her back. Her arms resting under her head. She hadn’t made a sound, but her chest rose and fell in gentle breaths. Living, breathing.

Cloud feels as if his legs are about to give out. His mouth runs dry, his frame trembling. This can’t be, this had to be some sort of cruel joke. She’s dead. She’s dead, he had to accept that, there was no way she could come back. So why…

Why is Aerith right there, just inches from his feet?

He extends his hand outwards, to her shoulder. Just to see if this is all a dream. A hallucination. A sighting of the paranormal. Skin contacts skin, and Cloud jerks his hand away like it burnt him. His breath hitches, tears flood his eyes.

“Aerith…” He breathes out, falling to his knees. He brushes some of the hair away from her eyes. A couple tears trickled down his face.

And then, Aerith began to open her eyes.

Notes:

Thanks for reading! :D I'm quite excited for this fic, and there's for sure gonna be a lotta cute Clerith moments! (but angst later, you cannot have a clerith fic without some angst!) I do appreciate comments and thoughts, so please do comment if you would like!

Chapter 2: Reunite.

Summary:

Cloud and Aerith finally reunite after nearly three years. It's an emotional, touching reunion. And then, the first issues began to show.

Aerith can't seem to walk. Oh, and the fact neither knows why and how Aerith even came back. Explaining their situation is not gonna be a walk in the park.

Notes:

Chapter Text

Aerith’s eyes flutter open, and she makes eye contact with Cloud. A breath of surprise escapes her lips, as she sits up. She winces, rubbing her sore back. Laying in grass and flowers isn’t as comfortable as it appears.

“Cloud…?” She whispers, her voice hoarse. Cloud doesn’t respond for a few moments. The tears flow faster, hearing her voice again makes his chest ache. It was as pretty as he remembered.

“How..?” He croaks, a trembling hand resting on her cheek. “You’re…you’re…” Cloud can’t hold back anymore. A sob tore through his throat. His arms wrap around her, hugging her close. A euphoric feeling spread in Cloud’s body. Last time he held Aerith, she was ice cold. Today, she’s warm. He bows his head down, laying his chin atop her shoulder.

Aerith’s arms wrap around him, embracing him back. She sighs, closing her eyes. “Cloud, it’s okay…” She soothes. Her hand moves to slowly rub and pat his back. “I’m here…it’s alright.” Tears brim at the corner of her eyes. She blinks them away, focusing on comforting Cloud.

“How are you…? Oh, Aerith…” Cloud choked out, when he could form words. His mind’s on overdrive, all these questions, emotions flooding in. He holds her tight, so nothing can separate them. He’s afraid to let go, afraid she’ll vanish if he does. If this is a dream, don’t let him wake up. “...we missed you. I missed you.”

“I missed you too,” Aerith tearfully responds. “I missed everyone…”

They sit for a few more minutes, before Cloud finally pulls away from her. He stares into her emerald green eyes, drinks in her face.

“Aerith, seriously, how…? What’s going on..?”

Aerith rubs the back of her neck, laughing a little nervously. “And…if I told you, I don’t know either? I mean, one moment I was swirling around, I think I was in the Lifestream? Then, next thing I knew…everything blacks out, and now I’m here.”

He gives a breathy chuckle. “How convenient.”

“You’re telling me!” She responds back. She places a hand on her chest, over her beating heart. “It’s…good to be back though. I wanna see Tifa and the others again. I wanna see mom. Hell, I even want to see the Turks!” She shakes her head.

Cloud smiles, before it fades just a bit. He runs a hand through his hair. Shit, the others. Since neither knows how and why she’s here, alive, it’s gonna be a lot to take in and explain. It’s not everyday the Planet magically revives someone.

“...how the hell am I gonna just…take you back and say, ‘Hey everyone! Aerith’s alive!’?” He’s only half joking. “Be prepared for a lot more tighter hugs and tears.”

“Roger that!” Aerith gave a thumbs-up, before shrugging. “Just tell them what I told you.”

“Let me just give Tifa a call, okay? Gotta get her to round everyone up,” Cloud pulls out his phone, scrolling until he finds her in his contacts. He plans on keeping Aerith’s return a surprise.

As Cloud’s on the phone, Aerith sat up straighter, placing her hands onto the ground. She furrows her brows. Her lower half felt…numb. Her legs felt as if they’re placed into a deep sleep. They tingle, and she winces at the sensation. She pushes her body upward.

‘C’mon…c’mon…work with me. Get up, Aerith!’

“Alright, get everyone there, please. It’s urgent.” Cloud nods at his phone. “Mm, thanks, Tifa. See you all in a bit.” He hung up, turning back to Aerith. His eyes widened, he took a step forward. “You okay?”

“Yeah, just…” Aerith trails off. “..my legs are probably asleep. I got it, don’t worry, please.”

“You know I can’t help it.”

Aerith climbs onto her feet, standing up. She winces more, the tingling and numbing is worse, it’s like needles stabbing all at once. Her knees bend and buckle, she falls back over. “Ah, shit!”

Cloud’s heart quickened, he’s at her side in a millisecond. He grabs onto her side gently, wrapping an arm around her.

“Aerith!” He shouts, eyes filled with panic. Cradling her in his arms like this…

It brings back bad memories.

“I..” Aerith looks down, a pang of realization settling in. “..I can’t walk. My legs…they won’t wake up. They…I can’t really stand!”

Cloud frowns. Without thinking, he swoops and lifts her up, carrying her bridal style. “I got you.”

Despite the dread, despite wondering if she lost her ability to walk entirely, Aerith shoots a thankful grin at him. “My hero…”

He noticeably flusters, turning his head to the side. “I’m just...helping you out. Once we meet up with the others, I’ll take you to a hospital.”

Aerith visibly tenses, but relaxes when he gives her a puzzled look. “Ah…right, that might be for the best!”

Cloud decides not to push, and carries her out of the church. He settles her onto his motorcycle, sitting in front.

“You kept the Hardy Daytona you practically stole from Shinra?” Aerith asks, giggling.

“Hmm? Oh, no, this isn’t the same one. We left those stolen vehicles behind, remember? This is a model called Fenrir.” He explains. He starts the engine, Fenrir roaring to life. “Grab on.”

“Fancyyy!” Aerith purrs, wrapping her arms around Cloud’s torso. She hangs on, a blush coming to her face. It’s comforting, being this close to Cloud.

Cloud finds himself almost grabbing ahold of her hand, but keeps his hands on the handles. Gotta hurry back to Seventh Heaven. Everyone’s waiting.

The two drive off, making their way back. Aerith gazes at the ruins of what once was a place she called home. What once were the slums, reduced to rubble. She lays her head down on Cloud’s back, closing her eyes. Butterflies flutter around in her stomach. She can’t wait to meet everyone again.

‘Wait for me. I’m coming home.’

Notes:

Next chapter is gonna be hella emotional. ;) Just warningggg. I promise I will try and update this story consistently. I don't know how busy my summer is gonna be, so we'll see!

Chapter Text

Tifa closed the door as the last person, Yuffie, entered the bar. “Alright, seems to be about everyone!”

“What the hell did Cloud want us to gather here for?” Cid huffs, lighting a cigarette.

“He didn’t say, just said it was urgent,” Tifa shrugged, taking a seat at one of the many barstools.

“He better get here soon! I got stuff to do!” Yuffie whined, pouting.

Tifa opens her mouth to speak, but the sound of Cloud’s motorcycle outside fills the air. She turns her head, and starts heading for the door.

The door knob turned, and Cloud pushed it open. The room fell into a hush. Tifa can only stare at the sight. Her breath caught in her throat. She stood in a second, nearly toppling over in the process.

Aerith, alive, in his arms. She shyly waves to everyone, chuckling softly. “Hey…” her voice wavers, eyes already brimming with tears. “...I’m home!”

All hell broke loose.

“WHAT IS GOING ON?!”

“AERITH!?”

“IS THIS SOME KINDA JOKE???”

“HUH? WHAT THE FUCK?!”

Their voices began blending, making Aerith cover her ears.

“Guys, please! Chill!” Cloud raised his voice, trying to calm everyone down. Easier said than done, though, how else would you react upon seeing your dead friend breathing and talking?

“How the hell do you expect us to?!” Barret exclaimed. “Aerith’s…” he trailed off, glancing away from them. His lip wobbles, yet he wills himself to stay strong.

“She’s alive,” Tifa spoke up, tears already running down her cheeks. “But…how?” She took a step forward, cupping Aerith’s cheek. Aerith rests a hand on hers, rubbing it gently in comfort.

“We don’t know how,” Aerith admitted. “ I don’t know how. It’s just all a blur.”

“We need to make sure nothing sinister is the cause,” Nanaki trotted over. “And that Sephiroth isn’t back too.”

Yuffie whined, “Great! If Sephiroth is back, I’m gonna seriously flip out!”

Cloud held Aerith tighter at the mention of Sephiroth. Silently agreeing with Yuffie’s statement. If Sephiroth did return like Aerith had….

He would make sure he’d stay gone, no matter what it took. He’s not about to lose Aerith again.

“I’m just glad you’re here,” Tifa whispers softly to Aerith, sniffling. “Welcome back, Aerith.”

“Glad to be back, Tifa. Now we can go shopping together, like we promised.” Aerith gently rests a hand onto her shoulder as Tifa sobs more. Before gently embracing her.

One by one, the others come forward. Yuffie joins the hug, then Barret, Nanaki, even Vincent. Soon, it was just one big cuddle pile. Mixed with sobs and sniffles. The glue that once held everyone together, had returned to them.

After a bit of silence, Aerith speaks. “So, uh…what did I miss?” She chuckles.

“HAH!” Cid guffaws. “Girl, you have no idea about all the shit ya missed!”

After a mini celebration, Cloud and Aerith head en route to Elmyra’s house. Aerith’s heart is pounding in her chest, her stomach twisting into knots. She’s not sure how Elmyra’s going to react. Especially knowing she’s still grieving over her.

“I had to tell your poor mother the news,” Reeve commented as he sat across from Aerith.

Aerith went pale. “Oh…” There really was nothing she could really say.

Reeve lowered his head, staring at the table. “Her wail echoes in my mind constantly, she was devastated. She’s still not really the same anymore.”

“Mom’s gonna be…in for quite a surprise, then,” Aerith jokes lightly, with a faint smile.

Cloud stops the engine of the motorcycle, hopping off. They arrived at the house. Miraculously, it’s one of the few remaining structures in Midgar left unharmed by Meteorfall. He turned to Aerith.

“You ready?”

“Ready as I’ll ever be.”

Cloud approaches the door, carrying Aerith once more. He can’t deny that his arms are growing sore, but Aerith can’t even walk. And without a wheelchair, this is the only way she’ll be able to move around for the moment. Besides, he doesn’t mind too much, Aerith this close to him is comforting.

He knocked on the door, and waited. It takes a minute before it opens.

Elmyra opened her mouth to speak, quickly closing it and freezing up. Her eyes are fixated onto Aerith, her face white as a ghost. She felt as if she were about to pass out. A short, squeaky burst of air exits her mouth.

“Mom? Mom! Cloud, put me down!” Aerith tugged on his shirt. Cloud complied, quickly moving inside the house. He sat her down at the kitchen table, then stood aside. Letting the mother and daughter have their moment together.

Elmyra breathed heavily, choking on her own sobs as she knelt on the floor. She grabs Aerith’s hands, holding them tight. She says nothing, before she hugged Aerith. Crying herself silly, cradling the back of Aerith’s head. Aerith joins her, tears pouring as she holds her mother. Both of them stay like that, for a while.

Cloud doesn’t say anything, just leaning on the wall, observing them. His chest tightened, seeing Aerith cry… It stirred a feeling in him.

Finally, Elmyra pulls away, looking into Aerith’s eyes. She gave a smile, cupping her left cheek. “Welcome home, baby,” she whispers.

“I missed you, mom…” Aerith sniffled, wiping her eyes. “I never got to thank you for taking care of me before I left…”

They both turn to Cloud, and Elmyra straightens up. “Cloud, thank you…for bringing her here.”

Cloud blinked, snapping back from his thoughts. His mind wandered off for a minute there. “Course.” After that, Aerith and Cloud repeated the same story they had told the others. Elmyra listened, taking a seat.

“Cloud?” Aerith asks as he leaned against the wall.

“Hmm?”

“Do I, uh, really have to go to the doctors tomorrow?” She questioned, her voice sounding smaller.

“Well, I want to make sure you’re alright, Aerith. You may feel fine, but you never know what’s going on inside. Especially since you can’t feel your legs.”

“I can feel them, it’s just…they feel so numb, and it’s like I step on needles on fire every time I stand.”

“And that’s why I want to get you checked out, I…” Cloud averted his gaze. “..I don’t wanna lose you again, Aerith.”

She didn’t say anything. Images of needles, a sick Ifalna, scientists flood her mind.

Aerith isn’t looking forward to the trip. If it makes Cloud happy, though, she’ll endure it.

Notes:

The others will get more screentime I promise, the next couple chapters will primarily focus on Cloud and Aerith, Cloud taking care of her, etc. But the others will check up on these two lovebirds. :3 Also anyone else kinda feel like Aerith would have a fear of needles, especially after her time with Shinra? No, just me? alrighty...

thank you for reading! :D I'm enjoying writing this story so far, and I hope you'll all enjoy what is to come. mwehehehe.

Chapter 4: Needles and Scars.

Summary:

Cloud brings Aerith to the doctors for a checkup, and to learn about her condition. Aerith hates being in the hospital. It brings back memories, ones she'd rather forget.

She's just glad she has Cloud by her side.

Notes:

Whoo! New chapter time! :D I gotta say, THANK YOU for all of the kudos and support! It still motivates me to continue working on this!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

“Are you okay?” Cloud asks, turning his head to face Aerith. They arrived at the doctors a while ago, and were waiting for Aerith to get called in.

“Yeah! I’m okay,” Aerith answers, flashing a smile to him. “Especially since I’m with you, my bodyguard.” She winks, making him blush. Deep down, was she really?

She hates the sterile scent of the hospital halls. She hates the beeping, the doctors in scrubs and white coats, the atmosphere.

And the needles.

Aerith never wanted to admit it, believing such a fear is childish, but she hated needles. No, feared them.

When she still lived in the Shinra building, she had to watch her mother, Ifalna, get subjected to experiments. Watch her deteriorate in real-time. Scientists injected her with foreign liquids, scribbling on their notepads. A few times, little Aerith had her fair share of injections too.

Thankfully, it wasn’t many, due to her and Ifalna escaping from Shinra. But, the pain was unbearable each time.

Aerith has faint, yet vivid memories of screaming, being held against her will, seeing syringes filled with unknown liquids. She’d cry and cry, only to be told to shut up and to stop squirming.

Needles hurt. Needles killed her mother. Needles--

“Aerith?”

Cloud’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts.

“Ah! Yeah?”

“They just called you in. You ready?”

Aerith felt her throat get dry. She nodded. “Mhmm.” She hums.

Cloud carries her, as he had been, to begin her checkup.

Aerith tunes most of it out. It’s just as basic as ever. Blood pressure, listening to her heartbeat, checking her weight and height, everything to expect at a checkup. Even so, the fear festered in the back of her mind. Any minute now, she expects it.

Now sitting on the examination bed, she swung her legs back and forth. Cloud resided in the chair, arms crossed. He kept looking at her, almost like he knew. He cleared his throat.

“You can be honest with me,” Cloud kept his voice low, soft. “Are you scared of the doctors?”

“Whaaat? Pssh, don't be silly, Cloud.” Aerith fakes her grin. “I understand they’re trying to help me!”

“Quit it.”

Aerith blinked. “Hmm?”

“Aerith. I know you’re hiding your feelings. You don’t have to. I know that might sound hypocritical coming from me,” Cloud gave a short chuckle. Before his tone returned to its serious state. “But…please. I don’t want you to feel like you should hide.”

Aerith frowns, looking away from him. She knows he’s right. She wants the same thing from him, she shouldn’t be a hypocrite and hide her own feelings. “...I know. Please don’t laugh.”

“I won’t.”

“I…don’t like it here. At all. The doctors remind me of the scientists. They remind me of the ones who’d come in everyday to take my mom away. And…I don’t want to see any needles. I’m…scared of them.” Aerith spills forth what she held back. Cloud listened to her every word.

He waited till she was finished, before reaching out. He takes her hand, holding onto it. “I don’t like needles much either, I understand. And hey, your fears are completely valid. You’ve been through some tough shit, Aerith.” His thumb rubbed across her knuckles. They lock eyes with each other. Aerith’s eyes are watery, she delivered a grateful face towards him.

A knock on the door snapped them from their gaze. Aerith sighed shakily. Here goes nothing.

Explaining her situation wasn’t a walk in the park. For one, how do you casually tell a doctor that you returned from the dead? Only to be unable to walk? Aerith decided to omit that part out, she and Cloud both. They decided to make up a story, a sickness that left Aerith this way. Good route, right?

Well, they thought so…

The doctor nods, writing on his clipboard. “Alright, well, Ms. Gainsborough, I’d like to get some blood work done. To find the cause of why you can’t walk.”

Aerith could feel the color melt from her face, her heartbeat quicken, her stomach doing flip-flops. Blood work? That meant a needle…

“Alright,” she meekly replied. Her leg started bobbing up and down, she gripped her dress. She watched him leave the room, her chest tightened. No, no…

Cloud wrapped an arm around her. “Aerith, hey, I’m here,” he soothed. He rubs his hand up and down her arm. “I’m not going anywhere, I’ll stay with you.”

Aerith relaxed, just a bit. “Can I squeeze your hand, when they come in here..?”

“Of course,” he smiled at her. Her heart fluttered, no words could describe how much she loved his smile.

The doctor returned with a nurse, a friendly curly-haired woman who carried the syringe and a tube for blood sampling. Aerith wanted to throw up, she just wanted to go back home. Sweat beads formed on her forehead, she began to feel light-headed.

“Aerith, I’m here,” Cloud reassured once more. “Take my hand, squeeze it if you need to.”

“Do you need a moment, Ms. Gainsborough?” The nurse asked her. “I can count if you want me to, hon. Would that help you?”

“I..I think it would,” Aerith nods. The nurse began to sanitize her arm. She tied a tourniquet around her upper arm.

“Hon, can you make a fist? Like this?” She demonstrated. Aerith copies her, making a fist. She found her vein, and grabbed the syringe. “I’m gonna count to three, okay? I want you to take a deep breath for me. When I say three, release it.”

Aerith draws in a deep breath.

“One…”

‘Please, Gaia, let this be quick.’

“Two…”

‘Don’t pass out, don’t pass out..’

“Three!”

Aerith released her breath. She dared not look at her arm. She squeezed Cloud’s hand tight with her free hand, clenching her fist with the other.

“You’re doing such a good job, Aerith,” Cloud praised her. “You got this. You’re the strongest woman I’ve ever met.”

“Heh,” Aerith chuckled lightly. “I thought Tifa was? C’mon, she can kick some ass, y’know.”

“She is strong, but give yourself some credit. Oh, speaking of her, are you still gonna plan that shopping trip?”

“You bet! We promised each other, I hope you don’t mind being our pack chocobo.”

He sighed. “I suppose…just don’t go crazy on the spending. Both of you.”

“No promises!” She winked.

“Ms. Gainsborough, you’re all done,” the nurse smiled, putting a bandaid on Aerith’s arm.

Aerith’s taken aback. “Huh…already?” She stammered.

“Yep, you did well, hon! Better than some of my patients.” She removed her gloves, washing her hands.

She released a breath she didn’t know she was holding. Thank the gods it was over.

“While we wait for the results, we’ll get you fitted for a wheelchair,” the doctor informed her. “Hopefully in the coming weeks, we’ll see how you regain your mobility.”

Aerith licks on her ice cream cone, sitting outside with Cloud. “It’s a little terrifying. To think that I might never regain the use of my legs. We really take things for granted, huh? Each day we wake up, each day we feel fine… You never really know when it’s all going to be ripped away from you. I took walking for granted…”

Cloud stopped licking his own ice cream, pondering her words. “Well…miracles can happen, y’know? Maybe they’ll wake up, and you can walk again.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Neither do you.”

Cloud had a point there.

“I just hope I won’t be a burden on mom.”

“You won’t be, Elmyra’ll be more than happy to take care of her daughter again. Besides, she won’t be alone.”

“What?”

Cloud just smiled.

“I’ll take care of you too, Aerith.”

Chapter Text

Aerith laid in bed, staring up at the ceiling. Every now and then, she thinks about how she’s here again. The wave of mixed emotions crashing in once more. She’s still not exactly sure why she’s alive again, but perhaps it’s a blessing she should take with no question.

Not like this. Not without the use of her legs. She’s had to rely on her wheelchair for some time. It made her feel like a burden sometimes. Having to rely on Elmyra and Cloud to take care of her, to help her around the house. It’s not that she didn’t appreciate their help, she was thankful, yet there’s moments where she wished it wasn’t this way. But, there wasn’t much she could do about her condition.

Her eyes move onto Cloud, his sleeping form. He’s breathing softly, chest rising and falling with each breath. His arms curled towards his face, he appeared content. Aerith brushed some hair from his face, looking upon him with a gaze of fondness. Those feelings stirred within once more, she’s falling in love with him. This isn’t SOLDIER Cloud, the one he wanted to show her badly, this is the REAL Cloud. And she’s glad she finally got to meet him this past week.

She leaned in, placing a feather-light kiss onto his forehead. “Sleep well, Cloud…” She whispered, before settling in for her rest.

He’s back here again. He doesn’t want to be here. Surrounded by bright, white glowing leafless trees. Cloud’s feet move before his brain does, and he’s running. He had to get to her, hurry. Hurry! His lungs burn, it’s hard getting a breath in.

He turned a corner, the smell of metal reached his nose. Cloud’s eyes widened. It’s an odor he’s familiar with, all too well.

“Aerith…” He ran down a spiral staircase. “Please, Aerith, stay with me…”

Cloud fell to his knees. Staring at the sight placed upon him. Aerith is lying there, arms folded over her stomach. Blood pooled beneath her. Judging by its appearance, it’s drying up. Aerith appeared as if she was asleep. Except her body stilled, without a sound. Tears brimmed at Cloud’s eyes.

“No…no, Aerith! Aerith, wake up.” He reached for her, cradling her in his arms. She’s cold… He rested a hand on his chest. Stared into those closed eyes. “Don’t you do this to me, don’t you dare…”

No reply.

Of course. Of course she was gone. Aerith was never going to come back, and it’s all his fault. Nothing good ever lasted for Cloud Strife. Every ounce of light, every instance of joy was just going to get torn from him.

Starting to cry, he held Aerith close to him. Face buried in her hair, taking in her fading smell.

“I’m sorry. Aerith, please wake up! Come back, I…I’m here now!” He yelled, sobs bubbling out of his throat. He sniffled, shakily laughing. He took another look at her face. “I’m…I’m a shitty bodyguard, aren’t I..?”

“Don’t weep. Your tears are empty.”

He knew that voice. He doesn’t dare to turn.

“Fuck off.”

“What charming last words.”

Cloud heard a blade swinging out. He closed his eyes, accepting what was about to happen. If Aerith’s really gone, then…he’ll join her. So both of them could be together. So they’d never get hurt again.

The strike never came.

“Cloud!” Aerith’s voice startles Cloud awake. His eyes snap open with a gasp, sitting up straight. His heart is fiercely thudding against his chest, his eyes dart around the room. He’s here. He’s safe. Aerith’s there with him…

Her hand rests on his arm. “You were mumbling and moving around a lot in your sleep. You woke me up.”

“Sorry…”

She shook her head. “It’s fine. But, what about you? Are you okay, Cloud?”

Cloud responds with what could be considered his catchphrase, at least one of many. “I’m fine.”

Aerith crosses her arms, with a pointed look. “You’re doing it again, just be honest.”

“...no.”

“Bad dreams?” She asks, uncrossing her arms.

“Yeah…”

“What was it about?”

Cloud stares at her. He remembers her face, the blood, the way her hands folded over her stomach. “I don’t really want to talk about it.” He murmurs.

“That’s fine, you don’t have to, I get it.” She gives him a reassuring smile. “I’m going to use the bathroom real quick, okay?” She moves towards her wheelchair, sitting right next to the bed. She often had it close to her. Aerith hates having to wake her mom or Cloud up to help her around the house. So, she normally crawled to her wheelchair and got around by herself. Cloud grabs her arm, and she jumps lightly, startled by the sudden grab. She turns her head.

“Cloud?”

“Let…let me go with you. Please. I know you don’t like asking for help, but I…want to be there--help you.” He catches himself. “Please?”

Deep down, Aerith knows there’s a different reason why he doesn’t want her out of his sight. She can see it in his eyes. He’s terrified. Terrified someone or something will get her, take her away. She pats his hand, nodding.

“Awww, of course you can do some bodyguarding work! I’d actually like that, thank you Cloud!”

Things changed after that night. Aerith often found Cloud sticking close to her. Be it beside her, or just a couple feet away.

He began to help her more and more. Wheeling her everywhere, doing chores around the house, he even would help her in and out of the bath. Even if his face was as red as a tomato.

At first, Aerith held her tongue, didn’t question it too much. Now, it was becoming unbearable. Cloud was stressing himself out, it wasn’t healthy. She had to put an end to it, before it got out of hand.

“Cloud, I want to talk to you.” Aerith bluntly spoke as they got ready for bed.

“What’s wrong?” He asks, approaching her after getting his pajamas on.

She sighs. “I want to say that I appreciate your help, and how you take care of me.”

“It’s nothing, I promised that didn’t I?”

“You did, but…” she looks down at her hands. “..it’s too much.”

“Huh?”

“You’re very clingy towards me.”

Cloud stiffens up, and huffs. “I am not.”

“You are.”

“Aerith, I’m just looking out for you.”

Aerith shakes her head. “No, you’re scared.”

“What?”

“You’re scared that I’m going to get hurt again, that’s why you’re always taking care of me.”

He goes quiet.

“I’m not mad. Just…take it easy, you’re stressing yourself out. You aren’t taking care of yourself either. You’re even…worrying me.”

“...worrying you?”

“You have eyebags, I’ve noticed you now tend to eat less, you steer me away from sharp objects, and I hear you toss and turn at night. Are your nightmares getting worse?”

“No, and you don’t have to be concerned about me. I can take care of myself. I’m fine--”

“Will you stop lying to me?” Aerith raises her voice a little. “I have told you time and time again to be honest with me, and you’re not.”

Cloud goes quiet again.

She sighs. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to raise my voice. But, I’m being honest, here. You know you don’t have to hide around me, Cloud. Don’t put walls up. I know it’s not easy talking about your feelings. Hell, I’ll admit, even I struggle. But, that doesn’t mean you should bury it or bottle it up. That makes it worse. Communicate with me, what’s been going on?”

“Alright. You got me.” Cloud ran a hand through his hair. “I’ve been dreaming about…that. Over and over.”

“My…death?”

He nods. “Sometimes I almost save you, other times, I’m too late.” Cloud’s eyes fixed on the ground as he spoke. “Always, it ends the same. You, dead, in my arms. I can smell the blood, even. I just…I don’t want to lose you again. When we lost you, it affected all of us. Me, especially. Aerith…I blamed myself. For so long, I blamed myself for your death. When we saved the planet, I thought about how you should’ve been here celebrating. Cheering and hugging with us all. I thought about how you’d never get to see the planet healing.”

Aerith listens, resting a hand on his hand.

“It just wasn’t fair. How come I was still breathing, how come I still stood, while you were buried in water?”

“I’m sorry…” Is all she can muster. She wraps her arms around Cloud, giving him a hug. He hugs back, breathing shakily.

“Aerith?”

“Yeah?”

“I need you…” He admits. “Can we…stay close tonight? Like this?”

A blush creeps up her cheeks, she strokes his hair. “Of course. I don’t mind.”

“Thank you…I…” he starts to form a sentence, yet it never completes.

“Hmmm?”

Cloud’s face is red, and he looks away. “It’s nothing. Let’s get some sleep.”

Aerith lays down, opening her arms. “Come on, big guy. Get some snuggles!” She brightly smiles at him, inviting him over.

Cloud can’t hide back the smile wrinkling his face. He goes into her arms. It felt like home.

“Goodnight, Aerith.”

“Goodnight, Cloud.”

Cloud finds himself wanting to say the unfinished sentence again, he bites his lip. He decides not to.

Sleep claims him. And for once, his dreams are filled with flower meadows, and one happy flower girl.

Chapter 6: Physical (and Mental) Therapy.

Aerith has finally began treatment to regain her ability to walk, with Cloud by her side. All is going smoothly.

One night, Aerith gets a bit too overconfident...

Chapter Text

Aerith stares out the window, humming softly and tapping her fingers against her legs. A lot changed these past couple weeks, as Aerith’s doctor finally suggested physical therapy for Aerith. After a few more tests and appointments, he concluded she may have at least a 50% chance at regaining the ability to walk.

They never found out why she couldn’t.

“Do you want me to be in there with you?” Cloud asks softly, glancing at her. Aerith nods.

“Duuh,” she giggles. “I’d love it if you were there to support me, Cloud. It means a lot!”

A blush was creeping up his cheeks. “Yeah…”

Cloud pulls the car into the parking garage, next to the rehabilitation building. He gets out, and as per usual to their routine, assists Aerith into her wheelchair. He wheels her, looking down at her fondly. “Do you want to get food on the way back?”

“And, if I say I do?”

“Then I’ll get you some food,” he playfully rolls his eyes.

Aerith waits patiently beside Cloud, tapping her fingers again. She had been called into the room, and was now just waiting. The worst part of any appointment: the wait.

“Do you know the name of the therapist?” Cloud asks.

“Mhm, Mrs. Ellie.” Aerith informs him. “She’s been working here for a long time, supposedly.”

“Ah…”

The door knocks, before opening. A woman with a bob cut, and a fair face, enters the room. “Hello!” She waves, closing the door behind her. “You’re Aerith Gainsborough, correct?”

“Mhm! Nice to meet you!” She and Aerith shook hands. Ellie’s eyes land on Cloud. “And this is your…?”

Cloud blinks, and straightens. “I’m her--”

“Boyfriend. He’s my boyfriend.” Aerith says, smiling. Cloud instantly whips his head to stare at her. Mouth agape. Did she really just…?

Dammit. Is he blushing again? And why isn’t he denying it?

“Oh! I see, okay.” Ellie nods, typing on her computer. “You’re here for your first physical, yeah? To help your legs get back on track?”

Their conversation began to blur, as Aerith’s words stuck in Cloud’s mind. Her boyfriend, boyfriend….boyfriend…

It felt so right.

“Alright, let’s get started.” Ellie’s voice deters him away from his trance. “Let’s start with some stretches.”

Cloud watches as Ellie guides Aerith, moving with her and stretching. He feels that protectiveness coming back. He kept an eye on them, ensuring Aerith was comfortable. He relaxes, at least, since Aerith and Ellie are already hitting it off well. That’s what amazed him about Aerith. She never had many friends growing up, yet could easily create bonds if she wanted to. If only he could’ve honed in on that skill during his years in Nibelheim…

“Cloud?” Aerith waves a hand in front of him. “You want to help, too? You’re allowed if you want.”

“Hmm? Oh, uh…yeah, of course.” He stands up from his chair.

Ellie’s standing near some balance bars. “We’re almost finished for today. Just gonna start nice and easy, okay? I want you to lean on this bar and make it to the end, alright Aerith?”

“Gotcha!”

“Nice and slow, take your time.”

Cloud rests his hands on her torso, ready to catch her if she falls. He says nothing, guiding her. He doesn’t notice his hands shaking. She made it to the end, and he released a sigh of relief.

“Good job, Aerith!” He smiles, looking at her. “I’m so proud of you.”

Her eyes shone, his heart fluttered at the sight. Wow, her eyes are just so easy to get lost in…

He had just stepped out of the room for a few moments. Cloud was hungry, and wanted a snack before bed. He promised Aerith he’d be back.

He promised her.

So there he stood, by the stove, making a grilled cheese sandwich. Upstairs, Aerith waited. He glanced up at the ceiling, and added a second grilled cheese to the pan. He figured she’d be hungry too.

Meanwhile, Aerith stood up from the bed. She needed the bathroom, and since it was just down the hall, she figured it wouldn’t be too much to handle. Hugging the wall, she straightens herself up. Supporting herself, she slid along, step-by-step. She winced, it still felt as if needles shot up her legs every time her feet touched the ground. She wouldn’t let this deter her.

Just. One. More. Step!

She gasped softly as her foot made contact with her bedroom rug. She tripped over it, letting go of the wall. Aerith moves to stabilize herself, it’s too late.

WHAM!!

Cloud jumped, dropping the spatula. “AERITH?!” He yelled. No response. He went white as a sheet. “...Shit!” He darted up the stairs, hurrying to the bedroom. “Aerith!”

He froze.

Aerith was laying there, on the floor. She’s laying down. She’s hurt. She’s hurt. No. Not again. Aerith…

Why did he leave her alone?

His chest heaved, he rushed to her side. He knelt down, gathering her into his arms.

“I’m…I’m alright, Cloud. Just got the wind knocked out of me, that’s all.” Aerith laughed.

“What happened?!”

“I got too bold,” she pouted. “I just wanted to walk to use the bathroom.”

He hugged her close, his body shaking. “Don’t…don’t do that again, Aerith. Please. That…scared the shit out of me.”

“I’m sorry.”

He embraced her for a few more seconds. She’s warm. She’s warm, her chest rose and fell, she’s breathing, she’s safe. She’s alright, she just tumbled. In his head, he thinks about those facts.

“Cloud?”

“Mhmm?”

“The smoke alarm’s going off.”

Beep! Beep! Beep!

“SHIT, I FORGOT ABOUT THE GRILLED CHEESE!”

That all happened a few days ago. Now, here he sat at a laptop, looking to find a therapist. He never wanted to admit it, but Cloud knew he’d need some form of therapy. With everything that he’s gone through, Aerith suggested it to him.

“I think it’ll help,” Aerith says beside him, watching him browse some sites. “I can go with you, if you’d like?”

“Thanks, Aerith, but I might go alone the first few times. Should I schedule my appointment when you and Tifa have that hangout? I could meet up with you two for lunch.”

She snickers. “Oh…about that…”

“I don’t like the smirk you have on your face.”

“You need to come with us! You’ll be our pack chocobo!”

“...pardon?”

Notes:

Chapter Text

The Edge Shopping Hall (formerly known as Midgar Shopping Hall), was bustling with life, customers exiting and entering stores. Kiosks giving out free samples, the mingling scent of food from the food court.

Tifa walks alongside Aerith, who’s wheeling herself. “Are you sure you don’t want me to push it for you?” She asks. “I’m sure your arms are growing tired, Aerith!”

“Nahh, I’m good!” Aerith chirps, searching for the next store to go into. “It’s good exercise for my arms!” Speaking of exercise….

She glances back at Cloud, arms full of different bags. “How are you holding up, Cloud?”

“This is nothing, I can handle it,” Cloud replies back, though his arms occasionally wobbling say otherwise. That, and the feeling of his arms wanting to pop clean off.

“You suurrreee?”

“Positive.”

Tifa chuckles. “C’mon Cloud, if you need any help, I’ll carry some!” She hums, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

“Oh, oh! There’s a candle shop! Want to look in there?” Aerith points.

“Oooh, good eye, Aerith! I probably need a couple of candles for the bar! Need that inviting, homey smell.” Tifa walks into the shop, Aerith close behind.

Cloud jumps back, the overflowing scents hitting him square in the face. His face scrunches up, yep, he’s definitely gonna get a headache from this. “Hey, Aerith?”

“Hmm, what’s up?”

“I’m gonna stand outside, that okay? The smells are just…”

“Overwhelming? It is for me too, that’s alright. We won’t be long! Go ahead and wait for us.”

“Thanks,” he steps away from the candle shop, finding a bench. He sighs in relief, taking a seat, dropping the bags down onto the ground. Resting his arms and legs.

“How’s this one?” Tifa asks, holding a candle below Aerith’s nose. Aerith closes her eyes, taking a quick whiff.

“Ooo, that one reminds me of Costa Del Sol! What’s it called?”

Tifa gazes at the label. “It’s named ‘Beachy Dreams,’ haha!” She chuckles a bit. “What a cheesy name, isn’t it?”

“Yeahhh, I don’t think that’s fit for your bar! Here, let’s see if I can find one?” Aerith offers. “I might know just what Seventh Heaven needs.” She carefully maneuvers around the store, Tifa following close behind.

“Aha! This one!” Aerith snatches a red colored candle off the shelf. “How about this?”

Tifa takes it, and looks. “Hmmm… ‘Campfire in the Living Room’?” She pops the cover off, taking a sniff test. “Ohh! I like that, I really like it!”

Aerith’s eyes lit up. “Yeah? What do you say, hmmm? I got a good eye, don’t I?”

“This is perfect, Aerith! Let’s get it!” She squeals.

They pay for the candle and exit the store, meeting back up with Cloud. “Did you have a good rest?” Aerith teases.

“I’m not gonna lie, I needed that,” Cloud chuckles. “It’s not easy being a pack chocobo, especially for you guys.”

“Well, we just need onneeee more thing…” Tifa held her hands behind her back, as to appear innocent.

Cloud groans softly, pouting. “Please don’t tell me it’s heavy.”

“It’s not! Pinky promise! I just need some newer coasters. The other ones are worn and fading.” Tifa explains. “Just one more store, and then we’ll head to the food court.”

“Sounds like a deal, right Cloud?” Aerith gives him a cute face.

“...fine. I can carry those.”

Much to Cloud’s disbelief, both girls lied. After Tifa bought her coasters, they both got distracted by a sale at a clothing shop. Then Aerith wanted new shoes, then Tifa needed new hair-ties.

When they finally reached the food court, Cloud’s legs and arms hated his guts. He felt heaven once more when they found a booth to sit at.

“Are you having fun?” Aerith asks, waiting for Tifa to get back with their meals.

“Not really.”

“Awww, we’ll carry some stuff. We’re gonna leave after this, I promise you.”

“You said that once.”

“Oh, you’re horrible!” Aerith laughs. Cloud smiles, leaning back.

“But seeing how happy you and Tifa are, and bonding…it makes the entire thing worth it. I feel…something whenever you smile.”

“Oh?” Aerith wiggles her eyebrows. “Yeah? Do tell.” She leans her body forward, staring into his eyes, her own glistening. However before any of them say another word, Tifa returns with their food.

“Uh…am I interrupting something?” Tifa questions, chuckling.

“Nope! Just teasing him.” Aerith moves back. “Whoo! That all looks so good, I’m starved! Thank you, Tifa.”

“Thanks.”

“Of course, let’s eat!” Tifa sat down.

Cloud eats quietly, glancing at both Aerith and Tifa as they converse. Aerith’s laughter and smile sticks in his brain. His eyes go soft, watching her. If she’s happy, he’s happy. And that’s all that matters. Aerith looks so beautiful right now, the way her eyes sparkle and glisten. Her smile fit her face just right. Echoes of her laughter play on repeat in his head, a sound he clings onto. One that he doesn’t ever want to forget.

“Cloud? Hey, are you gonna keep spacin’ out on me?”

“Huh? Oh! Sorry!” He stammers. “I was just…thinking,” he feels his face heating up.

Aerith snickers. “Well, you got a lil something on your shirt,” she sing-songs.

“I do?” He looks down, noticing a sauce stain on his shirt. “...shit.”

Tifa and Aerith both laugh, Tifa handing him a napkin. He mumbles a thank you before wiping the best he could.

“Don’t worry, I’ll toss it in the wash when we get home!”

Cloud rubs the back of his head, embarrassed. Every time he thinks about Aerith, the entire world around him fades, and she’s the only thing he’s aware of.

“By the way…there is one more shop we wanna see before we go…” Aerith hums, tapping her fingers against the table.

Cloud gives an exasperated sigh, laying his head against the table. “You two are gonna be the death of me.”

Tifa and Aerith simply exchange glances and cracked up laughing.

Notes:

Chapter 8: This Feeling in My Heart.

Chapter Text

Cloud sits outside, feeling the breeze whoosh past his skin. Yet, he can only focus on one thing.

Aerith. The girl in front of him, hands busy with a flower crown. Her hands work diligently, quickly. She’s so focused too, slightly sticking her tongue out without knowing. Cloud’s heart flutters.

She’s adorable. He thinks it without much question. It’s just the facts, Aerith is adorable. Always has been, always will be--.

Wait, what is he thinking? Cloud blinks, snapping out of it. He looks around the yard, and clears his throat.

“What’s wrong?” Aerith asks, looking up from her flower crown.

“Nothing,” he shakes his head.

“Is the heat bothering you? It is a little humid, want to go inside?’

“No! It’s just…uhh, I don’t know how to explain it.” He lies.

Aerith simply shrugs, resuming her crown making.

Meanwhile, Aerith thinks about him. Her feelings for Cloud never quite vanished. Now that she’s back here with everyone, those feelings intensified. Her heart is set, he is the man she wants to be with more than anything. Though, she’s unsure.

Aerith is unsure if he still even likes her in that way. She wonders if some of those feelings belonged to Tifa now. For a moment, she considered that as fact. But, he always stuck around her more than he did with Tifa. Even on days he probably didn’t have to help or watch over her. Elmyra could always do it, yet Cloud insisted. He wanted to be there with her.

“I’m almost done with this,” She says, smiling. “Would you like to wear it?”

Cloud sighs. “Fine, only cause you made it.”

The teasing smirk emerges on her face. “Ohhh?”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

He’s romantic without even trying.

Cloud’s blush rises in his cheeks. “Don’t give me that look.”

“Awww, someone’s turning red!” She giggles. He only pouts in reply. “You’re so cute.” She stiffens up. That just slipped on out.

They sat there in silence, saying nothing for a few minutes. Both faces equal shades of red. Aerith finishes up her flower crown, clearing her throat after a moment.

“I uh, I finished it!” She announces, placing it on top of Cloud’s head. The smile reappears on her face. “Tada!”

Cloud adjusts it. “How does it look?” He asks her.

Aerith’s beaming, a radiant glow in her eyes. “Amazing!” She claps her hands together. Cloud’s just glad he gets to see that grin on her face.

Cloud’s just glad he gets to see that grin on her face. “Oh, Cloud? Can I get a photo? Just one?”

Only one. And don’t show anybody else it.”

“No promises!” She chirps. “Help me into my wheelchair, please?”

Cloud stands, dipping his arms underneath her and lifting her up, carrying her bridal style. Aerith had been in physical therapy for a couple months now, making great progress. She could probably take a couple steps on her own, yet she didn’t want to risk it. No matter, Cloud also enjoyed the feeling of her in his arms.

After a quick trip back inside for her camera, Aerith holds it up. “Smile, Cloud!” She instructs.

Cloud forms a small smile on his face. Nowhere near a wide grin, just enough to be noticed on camera. A quick flash, and it’s done.

“Aww, perfect!” She squeals, taking the polaroid out. “Now, I’ll wait for it to appear!” A photo of Cloud smiling, just for her. And only her.

“I hope it doesn’t look weird.”

“Oh nonsense, Cloud, you look fine! It’s like that selfie we took! Oh, by the way…do you still have it?”

The blush returns to his cheeks. “Yeah, it’s…in my wallet,” he admits, turning his head to the side.

Aerith’s eyes sparkle. “You missed me that bad, huh? You kept our picture?”

“It was one of the only photos we have together. I didn’t want to forget what you looked like. I wanted to remember your face. I kept that and the photos I took of you in my wallet.”

“Cloud…” Aerith wheels herself over to him, giving him a hug. He hugs back. “I’m...glad. Really glad that I mean so much to you.”

“Of course you do.”

“I’m here now, how about another selfie?”

Cloud’s face goes soft. “I’d love that. And…maybe I can take more photos of you?”

“Yes!!”

As the two both laugh and share pictures, fate sets itself in stone. The star-crossed lovers shall fall in love again. Reunited with the one they cherished the most. Aerith felt at home with Cloud, Cloud felt at home with Aerith.

Notes:

Yeah, I know this might've been short. But when I get way more motivation, I'll write longer chapters! Stay tuned!

Chapter 9: Heart Stopping.

Summary:

Cloud is unable to shake off a gut feeling he has. Deciding to leave early, he makes his way back to Aerith. She's gonna be okay, she has to be.

...Right?

Maybe he shouldn't have gotten his hopes up.

Chapter Text

He only left for a few hours. Just a few. Cloud was sure Aerith would be fine. That she’d be safe. He would return home, straight to her.

So why? Why was this terrible aching feeling in his gut sitting there? Refusing to budge? This wasn’t right.

He finishes his job, grabs his payment, and makes his way home. Walking, jogging, sprinting. Cloud’s heart is racing a thousand miles per hour, his hands shaking.

‘Aerith, please be okay…’

The door flies open.

“Aerith!” Cloud’s voice rings throughout the room. There’s no response. His stomach twists, he begins searching. “Aerith?!” He searches the kitchen, downstairs guest bathroom, and backyard. She isn’t there. The silence is madly deafening. Cloud has never felt so lightheaded in a long time.

He turns a corner to make his way upstairs, and his heart stops. His stomach lurches, it takes every ounce to not faint.

Aerith is laying at the foot of the stairs, on her back. Her eyes are closed, face contorted in pain. There’s no blood, but it’s clear she’s in pain. There’s already a couple bruises forming on her legs and arms.

No. NO!

Cloud collapses onto his knees. “AERITH!” He gathers her into his arms, gently but frantically. He whimpers, cradling her close. “Hey, hey, it’s gonna be okay. Aerith, wake up. I’m here, I’m here. I’m sorry I left, I’m so sorry,” his eyes grew watery. He sniffles, resting a hand upon her cheek. It’s warm, her body is warm, she’s alive.

Aerith gives a low groan, stirring. “I’m okay…,” she says, opening her eyes. “Cloud…”

“What happened?! What the hell did you do?!” He asks, needing to get answers. “I’m gonna get you to a hospital, did you hit your head?”

“I…I wanted to see if I could walk down the stairs.” She says, wincing in pain as she moves.

“What?!”

She rests a hand on his cheek. “Lemme explain, okay?”

Aerith was growing restless of wheeling herself around. Restless of still having to rely on this wheelchair and her friends. She could only walk a few steps at a time. It was progress, yet not enough. She’s hellbent on regaining her ability to walk back.

As everyone knows, Aerith Gainsborough is a stubborn woman. Once she’s got her heart set, she’ll do whatever to reach her goal. Nobody could convince her otherwise.

She got up from her wheelchair, staring down at the stairs before her. She’d be fine, she’s got this! After all, there was a railing to support her. She couldn’t wait to see the look on Cloud’s face when he came home, knowing she’d gotten stronger. He’d be so proud of her!

Aerith grabs the railing, taking the first step down. Easy does it, now. The first step is easy enough, so is the second, and third. Yet, by the fourth step, the awful prickly feeling returned to her legs. Aerith isn’t so easily deterred, she’s used to it.

“I can do this, I got this, I’ll reach the end,” she told herself, taking the fifth step. She smirks. What happens next, is something she in hindsight should’ve never done. It was ridiculous of her, she second-guessed, was way too positive.

She let go of the stair railing.

Her knees wobbled and buckled, her eyes widened. “Shit--!”

Before she knew it, Aerith tumbled down the rest of the stairs. Her head, knees, and arms smack and thud against the stairs, she’s unable to catch herself in time. Her tumble came to an end once she reached the bottom.

THUD!

The sound of her body hitting the ground echoed. Aerith’s ears rang, her whole body ached and burned. She lowly groaned, clenching her eyes shut. The back of her head throbbed, she didn’t want to move. She didn’t hear the door open.

Aerith cursed herself for being too confident once again. She should’ve known. Why did she have to be so positive? It only caused her trouble once again.

Cloud takes a deep breath, trying to quell his anxiety. He’s feeling all kinds of emotions.

“I didn’t mean to worry you, I’m sorry--.”

“Why?”

“Huh?”

“I thought I lost you again! You weren’t answering me, and seeing you laying on the ground like that. I…I feared the worst, Aerith! Why didn’t you wait till I got home, I could’ve helped you! You were reckless! Don’t ever do this shit again, you hear me?” He spat, raising his voice a little. Cloud did sound angry, but underneath is all the anxiety.

Aerith looks away, lowering her head. “I’m sorry.”

Cloud can’t help but kiss her forehead, gently. The action catches her off guard. He sighs, resting his forehead against hers. She wraps her arms around him a little tighter.

“I forgive you. I’m still taking you to the hospital, regardless. Okay?”

“Yeah…okay.”

Thankfully, after a check-up, the doctor concluded Aerith would be fine. She didn’t hit her head too hard, she’d only be pretty bruised up for the next few days. They were both warned if she started showing signs of a concussion or more serious issues, to return ASAP.

Aerith now sat on the couch, resting a few ice packs on herself. “Mom’s gonna be pissed when she finds out what I did,” she jokes lightly, trying to lighten the mood. “I’m gonna get a scolding, even though I’m an adult.”

“If anything, she’s probably gonna be pissed at me,” Cloud mumbles. He looks away from her. “This is all my fault.”

“Cloud, please don’t start this. It wasn’t.”

“I left you all alone.”

“It was my decision,” Aerith cut in.

“You still got hurt.”

“And it was my fault.”

“Aerith, you’re under my--”

“God dammit, would you just stop?!” Aerith snips. “I’m getting really tired of you blaming yourself for my shitty decisions. Just shut up, Cloud! Not everything is your fucking fault, it’s like you’re making this all about yourself. I get it, you were scared, but that didn’t mean it was automatically your fault. Alright? Now just take a chill pill and relax.”

Cloud went quiet for a few moments, and Aerith glanced towards the wall. She didn’t mean to get snappy with him, but she’s grown tired of his constant blaming of himself.

Then, he spoke. “Really, Aerith? You could’ve gotten seriously hurt, but you’re fucking telling me to relax? Sorry I was reminded of you being taken away from me,” he scoffs. He stood up, grabbing his jacket. He made his way for the door. “I think we both need some space from each other.”

“Fine by me,” Aerith adjusts an ice pack. “Mom will be home soon anyways. So you can stop worrying about me.”

With that, Cloud left, shutting the door behind him. He got on his motorcycle, starting it and driving off. He needed a drive to clear his mind.

Notes:

annnd that's gonna be a cliffhanger since I'll be busy. I will TRY to work on the next chapter when I can, but no promises. Thank you for reading, and I'll see you all on the next chapter!

Chapter 10: Our Spot.

Summary:

Aerith goes on a search for Cloud to apologize over the recent accident. Not to anyone's surprise, he's confided in the comforts of the Sector 5 Church.

Cloud is finally ready to tell Aerith everything...

Notes:

Hey, hey! Sorry for the wait! I know it's been awhile, I apologize. I was super busy. I wanted to update sooner, but things changed. Finally though, here's another chapter to help make up for the wait times! :D

Also, yeah I know Aerith is having accidents and falling constantly, and making some bad choices. She's a stubborn one, once she's set on a goal she won't stop at nothing to reach it. But from now on, I promise she's gonna be more careful, LMAO.

Chapter Text

Aerith taps her fingers against the cup, the tea inside having long been emptied. She sighs, glancing at the front door. She missed Cloud. Aerith heavily regretted what happened earlier.

“Good job Aerith,” she mumbles to herself. “You did it again. You let your confidence get the better of you.” She stares at the ceiling. “I have to apologize to Cloud.”

“Hey, mom?” She raises her head up.

Elmya pokes her head out from the kitchen. “Yes, baby?”

“I’m gonna go talk to Cloud, can you help me just a teeny bit?”

Elmyra gave an apprehensive look. “Are you sure…? Don’t you wanna wait until he gets back?”

Aerith shook her head. “He’s gonna be out all night if I let him. I wanna make sure he’s okay, and apologize.”

“Well...once you’ve got your mind set, I can’t stop you. Alright,” Elmyra wipes her soapy hands off on a dishtowel.

Aerith wheels herself through the streets, heading to one place and one place only.

The church.

She just had that gut feeling of knowing he’d be there. Sure enough, as she wheels herself into the church, there he was.

Cloud sat there, near the flowers. His chin resting in his hands, eyes focused on the patch before him. He doesn’t turn his head when he hears Aerith coming in.

“Hey,” Cloud greets.

“Heya.”

Both of them sit in awkward silence for a moment. Unsure of who should start the conversation. Aerith decides to break the ice.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. You?”

“Better, thanks. So, look Cloud, I just…wanted to apologize.” Aerith begins, rubbing the back of her neck. “I was acting pretty stupid back there. I shouldn’t have done that.”

“Agreed.”

“You still gonna be short with me?” Aerith pouts.

Cloud sighs. “Gimme a break, you told me to relax when I was clearly not okay.”

“I know…” Aerith lowers her head. “I’m sorry for that. I just…I hate seeing you stress out this much over me.”

“Can’t help it.”

Aerith wheels herself closer to him. “I hope you can forgive me. I really was being rude, I should’ve comforted you. Instead I…” She felt her eyes growing watery.

Cloud finally turns to face her. “Hey,” he spoke tenderly, wiping her eyes. “It’s fine, really. It’s just…” he looks nervous. Cloud’s hiding something.

“What is it?”

“You mean a lot to me, Aerith.”

She giggles. “I know that much--”

“No, no, uh…in a deeper way.”

“Hmm?”

He looks away, rocking around. He avoids eye contact with her. What’s Cloud so afraid of?

“What’s going on?” Aerith asks. “You can tell me, I won’t be mad, I promise.”

“Aerith…”

“Yeah?”

Cloud takes a deep breath, running a hand through his hair. “I think…I have feelings for you.” He admits.

Her heart skipped a beat.

“I dunno, it’s a lot. You know, my feelings kinda faded after you…you died. I never thought I’d ever see you again. And I was moving on, well, doing my best to. But now, now that you’re back… Those feelings have returned. I don’t want to lose you again. So, while I can, I’ll just say it. I love you, Aerith.”

Aerith took in every word, grabbing and clutching his hand tight. Her heartbeat quickens, a slow smile spreading across her face. He said it, he finally said it! He’s really in love with her.

“I know you really liked me before,” Cloud spoke again. “I’m not sure if you still do though.” He smiles nervously.

“Oh, Cloud,” Aerith hums, resting her forehead against his. “You don’t know how long I’ve waited to hear those words. I still really like you, love you, in that way. If I could, I’d fall in love with you over and over. It was you I searched for after all, you silly goose.” She boops his nose.

“I’m glad,” Cloud leans into her touch once more.

“I’m sorry again about how these past couple hours have turned out.” Aerith states, cupping his cheeks.

“It’s alright, in the past now, right?”

“Mhm.”

A growl interrupts their time. Aerith blinks, glancing up at him. Cloud’s face was a shade of red.

“Ignore that,” he mutters, with embarrassment.

Aerith giggles. “I’m hungry too. Let’s grab something together. You game?”

He held her hand. “Yup.”

Cloud and Aerith both left the church, their spot, hand-in-hand. For the first time, as a couple.

Notes:

WHOOOOO! They're now FINALLY a couple! :D that means this story is also nearing the end. Just a few more chapters. I hope you all enjoyed this chapter, despite the long wait. See you in the next one!

Chapter 11: Familiar Black Suits.

Summary:

Aerith and Cloud run into some old acquaintances after a day out. Ones who are surprised to see an old friend...

Oh, and they both enjoy some cinnamon rolls together. :3

Notes:

Hello, hello! I'm so sorry it took me so long to get this out. To put it simply, I lost a ton of motivation for writing. I lost a lot of motivation to even do anything. I also got mildly busy again, and had to deal with another round of depression. But, I should be back??? No guarantee.

This fic is also almost finished. I plan on writing a couple more chapters, and finishing this entirely. I think I'm way better with writing one-shots than a full story. Thank you for the kudos and sticking around, here's the next chapter! This one might also be relatively short, so apologies.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Cloud and Aerith surely didn’t expect to run into the turks again. With Shinra no longer in business, they just faded into the background. Life just has a funny way of surprising you, however.

Aerith laid a bag of cinnamon rolls in her lap, as she and Cloud headed back to her house. They had run a few errands that day, which Aerith of course considered a date. They’ve been dating for around a month now, with Aerith’s condition improving.

She had another doctor’s appointment and therapy session, where she was able to walk for a longer period. Aerith beamed ear-to-ear, she felt like she’s slowly getting her life back. To celebrate, she had Cloud stop by the local bakery for the cinnamon rolls. Which still laid warm and fresh in her lap. The scent filled her nose. She could not wait to eat them. Cloud walked behind her, pushing her wheelchair.

“You hungry?” Cloud asked, smiling softly down at her.

“Duuhhh!” Aerith replied back. “They smell so good! And just what I needed after that appointment!”

Cloud chuckled, turning a corner. Almost there. “Don’t eat em all, Aerith. Save some for me, cause--”

“No way. Is that…?” A voice gasped. Cloud stopped in his tracks, glancing.

It was Reno, who stood next to Tseng and Rude.

All three of them stared in shock.

“Aerith…?”

“Hey,” Aerith waved, smiling like everything’s normal. “Long time, no see!” Just greeting old friends.

“Aerith, how?” Tseng stepped closer to the couple.

“You’re supposed to be fucking dead!” Reno’s more vocal. “How the hell are you alive?!”

“That’s the thing, I dunno how.” Aerith puts her finger up to her lips. “Shhh, it’s my secret.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?!”

Cloud sighed, rolling his eyes a little. He just wanted to get home and spend time with Aerith. “You done gawking? We gotta get going.”

Rude opened his mouth, but Reno interrupted him. “Yeah, pretty hard to ignore the elephant in the room here.”

“Is your mother aware of this?” Tseng asked. Aerith nodded.

“You see, I’ve been back for quite some time now. Where have you been?”

“Busy,” Rude finally got a word in without being interrupted. He pushed his sunglasses up.

“I find it pretty bullshit that you don’t know how you just…came back from the dead, Aerith.” Reno huffed, crossing his arms.

“The planet’s doing, I suppose. I was just too cool to remain dead.” Aerith winked.

“Aerith and I are going to get going now,” Cloud started pushing her away.

“Wait just a second,” Tseng put his hand up. Cloud groaned, sighing heavily.

“What?” He asked, trying to not grit his teeth too hard. “If you try anything…”

“Relax, we’re not gonna take your girl anymore,” Reno chuckled. “Shinra’s dead now.”

“Just wanted to wish you two the best,” Tseng simply said. “Take care. And it’s good to see Aerith back. Protect her, Cloud.”

Cloud simply nodded. “Will do.” With that, he continued on his way with her.

“They all still look the same,” Aerith giggled. “You know…it was actually really nice seeing them again.”

“You think?”

“I mean, I know. They were nuisances to us, they did bad things, but…” She shrugged. “They were a part of my life for a long, long time. Wonder what kinda jobs they got now.”

“Don’t know, don’t care.”

“Ooo, someone just wants some cinnamon rolls, hmm?”

“I’m starving.”

Now, Cloud and Aerith sat on the couch, enjoying their cinnamon rolls. Aerith giggles at Cloud.

“Slow down! You’re already had three!”

“I’ll have just one more, thank you very much.” Cloud snatches a fourth roll.

“Mr. Strife discovers just how yummy sweets can be, when he’s not eating bland healthy stuff!”

“Hey, this is just a one time thing, Aerith. I’ll only indulge in this kinda stuff rarely. When you got a job like I do, staying fit and healthy is the most important thing.”

“Four cinnamon rolls, and counting!” Aerith sing-songs, booping his nose.

“Hmmff.” Cloud huffs, through cheeks stuffed with the roll.

Later that night, Aerith awoke to the sound of crunching. She sat up in bed, a little confused. Turning her head, she saw it.

Cloud stares, wide-eyed, holding a bag of chips.

“One time thing, huh?” Aerith just laughs.

Notes:

very silly, short, and sweet, I know. I'm using what little motivation and energy I got back to make this. I hope you enjoyed this chapter :) your support means a lot to me.

this story is almost done. :) stay tuned! Until next time.

Chapter 12: Back on My Feet.

Summary:

Summer has arrived once again, so Cloud and Aerith spend some time outside. During one of their daily outings, Aerith has a surprise for him. One that he is sure to never forget.

Notes:

Hi everyone! I'm back, finally updating this! I'm happy to say this story is finally almost finished!! :D

I really enjoyed making this, don't get me wrong, but I think one-shot stories are more of my thing. I just SUCK at making stories with more than one chapter, but I guess it depends on the length. :/ I know this took me a bit to finish, I'm sorry. I just felt unmotivated, I was busy, went through more depression, etc. Thank you all to those who left kudos, comments, and even bookmarked this! I appreciate you all so much.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Aerith took in a deep breath, before exhaling it all out. Summer had arrived once more, and she was enjoying it. Every chance she got, she had Cloud bring her outside. The sun felt like a warm hug, she woke up to the music of the birds, her flowers were in full bloom.

“So lucky it’s not super windy today, hmm?” Cloud asks her, wheeling her around, as the norm.

“Mhm, nothing like yesterday! I thought I’d fly right out of my seat!” She laughs, waving her hand.

“Glad you didn’t. Otherwise, I don’t think I’d be able to catch you.” Cloud hums, brushing a strand of her hair away from her face.

“Ah, Cloud! Look!” She points up. Cloud tilts his head to see.

“Hmmm?”

They’re standing near a cherry blossom tree, its petals raining down from the breeze. A few petals manage to land in Aerith’s lap. She giggles, cupping her hand.

“So pretty!” Her eyes sparkle, trying to catch more. Cloud’s face goes soft, just admiring how adorable his girlfriend looks.

Aerith’s beauty really shines whenever she’s passionate about nature.

“Yeah, it is,” he comments, only focusing on her.

“I know you’re talking about me, mister,” she teases. “You’re not really good at hiding it.”

“I’m not even trying to,” he retorts playfully, continuing to stroll along. “Oh, by the way, I’ve been meaning to ask you…”

“Hmm?”

“How was it? The appointment? I’m sorry I haven’t gone to them lately, I always seem to be working or occupied now whenever you go.” He sighs. Cloud hated to miss Aerith’s appointments, but that’s what happens when you sign up to be a merc. You gotta handle all kinds of business.

“Don’t worry about it, I understand.” Aerith pats his hand. “Well, it’s going smoothly, y’know? Same old, same old.”

“Have there been any improvements?”

Aerith shrugs, “Some.”

Cloud’s shoulders noticeably deflate. “So…they really have no idea?”

“If I’ll be able to walk again? Guess not, but…I’m making fantastic progress still! I can walk short distances, I can stand for more than a minute, I’m getting better!”

“No matter what, though, I’ll take care of you. I promised, and I don’t intend on breaking that.”

She smiles, squishing his cheeks. That’s when Aerith gets an idea.

“Oh, Cloud, can you let go for a moment?” She asks. Cloud’s eyes widen briefly, yet he complies.

“Yeah, of course, but why? Did you want to do it--” He gets interrupted.

Aerith takes off, wheeling herself away from him. She hears him gasp, yelling her name, chasing after her.

“Aerith! Aerith, wait! What the hell are you--”

“Stop! I want to show you something!” She yells back. “Just trust me on this! Stand back!”

Cloud’s confused out of his mind. What’s going on? What is she doing?

Aerith turns her wheelchair around, staring at him. She purses her lips, shaking her head. “Tsk, tsk. This is not going to work. Move back a little.”

He takes a couple steps.

“More.”

Again.

“A liiittle bit more.”

They repeat this process until Cloud is at least more than a few feet away from her.

“Perfect!” She yells, giving a thumbs up. “Stay right there, and don’t move!”

Cloud raises an eyebrow, his heart racing a little. He feels his phone vibrate, and he retrieves it from his pocket. Who could be texting him?

It’s Aerith. The text reads:

Cloud. I’ve been hiding something from you. Don’t freak out, it’s nothing bad. Just…keep reading, okay? It’s about my treatment.

Are you with me?

Yeah. What’s going on?

Look up. When you do, stand there. DON’T MOVE. ;)

Cloud looks up, his mouth going agape.

Aerith is standing up from her wheelchair. She waves to him, face radiating with excitement. She takes a step, then another. And another. She’s walking.

Aerith Gainsborough is walking.

“Aerith?! What is this?!”

“Oh, silly goose, don’t you get it already?” She giggles. “I’ve been hiding it from you for awhile, as a sneaky lil surprise. You see, the truth about my treatments….I never gave up. Even if I fell over. Even if my legs hurt. Look at me, doing it again huh? Aerith does the impossible! She can walk again!”

Cloud is speechless, he can’t even find words. He can only watch her, as she strides for him.

Aerith extends her arms out. “I’m going to walk right to you!” Her eyes get watery. “You’re my goal.”

Cloud finds it so hard to hold back tears. She’s truly a stubborn, hardworking, forward person. Just the kind of person he always knew she was. Even when life threw curveballs, even when she was at her lowest, Aerith picked herself off the ground and tried again.

“You…you can do it,” Cloud found himself talking before he realized he was. He extends his own arms out, reaching for her. “Aerith, you got this!” A stray tear rolls down his face, his grin so wide.

Aerith laughs, now only a couple feet away from him. She didn’t stumble once. “Here I come!”

Aerith reaches Cloud, wrapping her arms around him. He returns the embrace, hugging her so tight. He closes his eyes, combing his fingers through her hair. They’re both crying, laughing. Blossom petals still rain around them, the sun shone down on the couple.

“I did it, I really did it…” Aerith whispers.

“You did,” He pressed a kiss to her temple. “I’m so proud of you…”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

They stay wrapped in each other’s embrace for what felt like an eternity. Neither of them say a word. Aerith pulls herself closer to him, resting her head close to his collarbone. Cloud continues to comb and stroke her hair, swaying them both side-to-side.

Finally, Cloud breaks the silence. “That was the best surprise I’ve gotten in awhile.”

“Oh?” Aerith lifts her head to gaze at him. “When’s the last time you got a surprise?”

“When you actually wanted to be my girlfriend.”

Aerith burst out laughing. “Awww! I couldn’t reject you.” She boops his nose. “You know, all that walking has made me hungry.”

“You want some ice cream?”

“Took the words out of my mouth!”

Cloud only lets out a chuckle, kissing her temple once more. “Then, let’s go get some.”

Notes:

Next chapter will be the last! :)

Chapter Text

“Aerith, be careful.” Cloud mutters, keeping a tight grip on Aerith’s hand. His eyes never left her as she walks along the concrete of a fountain.

“Oh Cloud, I’m fine!” She giggles, taking another step. “This is so fun!” She reaches with her other hand, feeling the cool water run through her fingers.

It had been a month since Aerith regained her ability to walk. Cloud insisted she’d take it easy, so she wouldn’t hurt herself. She did listen…for a moment, at least. Aerith loved to test over and over how far she’d run or how long she’d climb. Cloud was sure he began growing grey hairs.

“Hey, Cloud?” Aerith asks, pulling on his hand slightly. He looks over.

“Hmm?”

“Wanna go for a dip?”

“What are you talking--WOAH!” Cloud yelps as Aerith jumps, taking him with her.

SPLASH!!!

Water flew up in various directions as both of them submerge themselves into the fountain water. Cloud quickly surfaces, spluttering and pushing himself up onto the ledge. He blinks, staring at Aerith.

“AERITH!!”

She just laughs, putting her hands up. “WHOO! YEAH!! I’ve always wanted to try that! That was so fun!”

“It wasn’t,” he grumbles, wringing his clothes out. “That could’ve gotten us into some serious trouble.”

Cloud then grows concerned, hoping she’s alright from the fall. “Are you okay, though? You didn’t hit your head or anything, right?”

“Nope! I’m good,” she rose from the water. Cloud drinks in the sight of her, her hair drenched yet still falling in curls. The way her clothes now hug her body, the water rolling down her arms and legs. It was hard not to blush.

“Is someone staring?” She sing-songs, stepping out of the fountain and booping his nose.

Cloud blushes harder, looking away from her face. “No. Just, uhh…” He stood up. “Let’s go get dried off.”

“Good idea,” she held his hand again.

They both exchange looks of pure love, before striding off. Wet footprints starting out strong but slowly drying out behind them.
