‘Tis The Season

Summary:

You know something that used to not be a day off for the DDF? Holidays. You know something that is now a day off since The Battle of Evensong? Holidays.

Notes:

Yes I know it’s June and yes I headcannoned basically all of their religions and ethnicities(please bear with me). I would also like to mention that I did an unreasonable amount of research for this.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

You know something that used to not be a day off for the DDF? Holidays. You know something that is now a day off since The Battle of Evensong? Holidays. For the past 2 weeks Alta has been decorated head to toe with Christmas, Yule, Rozhdestvo Khristovo, Hanukkah, you name it. And so was Jorgen’s office, though he wasn’t too pleased about it.

When decorations started for the first winter holiday celebration since the war ended it completely shocked and almost terrified the non-humans now on Detitrus. It took at least 3 hours explaining the whole thing to Alanik who still is a bit confused and seemingly threatened by the ‘Santa Clause’ thing.

A quick explanation of where Skyward flight was: Jorgen had no known family outside of his parents(and we all know how that went), so he was spending Rozhdestvo Khristovo with Spensa and her mother. But Spensa still did her best by including some forms of Yule into the day.

FM was with her family also celebrating Rozhdestvo Khristovo. Rig was already finished with Hanukkah the week prior, so he was with FM. Arturo was celebrating Christmas and had dragged Alanik along. Nedd was also celebrating Christmas, but it was a much quieter household without his brothers. Kimmalyn too was celebrating her Episcopalian Christmas.

Sadie had already celebrated the most important part of Christmas, Joulupukki, which was the day before. But it was still important that family sticks together so she wasn’t planning to leave. Corbin and Trey were with their families having a Holy Supper that would last almost for hours. So, in short, all three of them would not be showing up to the Weight house later that night.

But the rest of the flight would.

----

The aroma of the christmas cookies filled the kitchen and into the living room. Lights were stringed from wall to wall and there was the faint sound of old Earth Christmas music on the radio. The fireplace was burning with this warm orange glow and a dark green Christmas tree was placed by the couches. The dining table had a tablecloth with dark red coloring and with gold tinsel lining and all the lights had been dimmed.

Jorgen pulled a tray of cookies from the oven and set it on the cooling rack. Both Doomslug and Boomslug inched their way to try and steal some of them before getting swatted back by Jorgen.

“No,” Jorgen said sternly. “They are still hot.” Doomslug made the eldritch horror screech she had learned from Spensa but Jorgen paid no mind. Moving the cookies from the island to the main counter, knowing the taynix couldn't hyperjump without delver permission, and went back to mixing the icing.

“Ooooo,” Came Spensa’s voice now in the kitchen, because—unlike the slugs—cytonics who could hyperjump could do so without permission. She walked over in a dramatic fashion and moved to pick up one but Jorgen stopped her.

“Really?” He asked with a sigh, but there was a smile forming on his face, silver linings. “I just told the slugs that they were too hot.”

“I’ll be fine!” Spensa replied. “I can handle a lot of things, Jorgen and hot cookies are one of them.” But Jorgen grabbed her wrist and pulled her away. Spensa replied with glowing white eyes and an eldritch screech in his direction, but did nothing more except pout a little.

Stars, she’s amazing. He thought to himself, noting her flowy black pants and… was that his navy sweater? No wonder it looked too big on her. When did she get that? Anyway, Jorgen turned his attention away from his girlfriend and back to the bowl of still-needed-to-be-mixed icing.

“Question, why did we mostly decorate your house with Christmas decorations?”

“Uhh,” Jorgen wondered. “I think it’s because the author was too lazy to do anything special.”

I’m only joking, while that is true, that isn’t what he said. What he said was:

“Uhh,” Jorgen wondered. “I think it’s because we just figured it was something everybody knew relatively well enough.”

Anyway,

Jorgen started pouring the red and green icing into the separate piping bags when he was startled out of his work when Spensa grabbed his shoulder and started shaking it.

“Wait! I actually found something!” With that, Spensa disappeared from the kitchen and returned with a box, a stick, some string, and a mischievous smile.

“What are you planning?” He asked, tilting his head with a tired smile.

Spensa set the box on the counter and opened it to reveal a bunch of fake mistletoes.

“You see!” She replied, that smile still plastered on her face. She tied the string to one end of the stick and one of the plastic mistletoes to the opposite end of the string and held it up like a trophy. “We could have a lot of fun with the rest of Skyward with this.

Jorgen raised an eyebrow and jokingly asked. “You really want to prank the rest of the flight by making them kiss with some cheap, plastic mistletoe?” Spensa only gave him the look that said ‘I know you are lying, Jerkface, my disobedience has rubbed off on you and both of us know it.’

Jorgen walked across the kitchen to her and picked up one of the fake mistletoes in the box and lifted it between and above his and Spensa’s head.

“Well,” He said with a smirk, lifting up Spensa’s chin to pull her closer. “If we are going to do that… They can’t be the only ones kissing under some cheap, plastic mistletoe can they?”

Spensa wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled Jorgen down to a kiss that quickly stopped being innocent. They pulled back out of breath and had cytonically connected with an understanding that they currently did not have time to go further. And whoever would show up first neither needed to see nor hear the ‘further.’

“Let’s start decorating the icing.” Jorgen said, out of breath.

“Yeah.” Spensa replied, sucking in a sharp breath.

They adjusted their clothes and picked up the piping bags.

“You sure you’ll be fine piping?” Jorgen asked.

“Yes of course,” Spensa laughed. “What could go wrong?” A good amount of things went wrong,  but after some struggle between both parties, they had halfway decent looking cookies.

“Yeah, it’s fine.” They both agreed.

They put the cookies onto plates and set them out with the rest of the snacks, drinks, and drinks if you get my drift. As they were finished up, they heard the first door bell ring, meaning that people from Skyward flight were about to show up.

And it was very soon about to show why Skyward had their ‘Chaotic Heroes’ trademark.

Notes:

I will probably add another chapter to this, but for now it’s gonna be posted as a oneshot in case I don’t. Also yes I know, that kiss scene was weak I get it, I struggle with that kind of thing let me be 😭
