Lumon employees are being held hostage at the Kier branch and no one is saying anything
Branch-Specific Question
Made a burner acc for this bc I was getting threats when I tried to post on main. So basically my dad is a severed employee at Lumon and we haven’t seen him since last Friday when he left for work. When my mom called his boss she got redirected to someone she’s never heard of before who told her that he never showed up to work on Friday but then when we checked the parking lot his car was there. We thought it was just us but all my friends who know a severed worker have been saying the same thing happened to them too. How is this not all over the news??? Why is no one talking about this

Well it’s been pretty well-established at this point that lumon did not, in fact, kidnap those workers. They’re doing a sit-in and staying there by choice. If anyone’s kidnapping anyone it’s the innies kidnapping their outies. Which just gets into a much larger conversation about innie rights and who gets to decide what to do with their body and who counts as a real person. Which is like the whole point of why they’re doing this

“Don’t go to sleep,” Mark whispers. “Not yet.”
“I’m not,” she says, but doesn’t open her eyes. “I just want to savor this. Just for a moment.”
He gives her hand a soft squeeze. “Me too,” he whispers.
The time passes slowly, lazily, yet each moment is still too short. They feel every second pressing against them, drawing them closer to their inevitable separation. Time is a luxury they aren’t afforded. Not down here.
“Hey,” Helena whispers. “What do you think we’re like, up there?”
Mark chuckles. “Don’t know,” he says. “But I hope we’re happy.”
She presses a gentle kiss to his cheek. “So do I.”

First of all, I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who kudos’d, commented on, and sent asks/messages about the first chapter! I have never had a fic get this kind of response before and everyone’s kind words really mean so much to me. Also, thank you markhellyna fics library for the shoutout on twitter!
I know it took a little while to finish this chapter; I got a little ambitious with some of the coding and it took a bit longer than I anticipated. I hope you’ll find it worth the wait! Also, you might notice the chapter count has gone up. I realized as I was writing that if I fit everything into chapter 2 that I was initially planning, just this chapter would have been close to 10,000 words and would have taken even longer to code.
You know the drill from chapter 1: please make sure you have “Show Creator’s Style” toggled on! I quit lumon and now I feel guilty

I started working as a severed employee at Lumon in 2016, after I developed a progressive disability that prevented me from continuing my previous job as a commercial pilot. I really didn’t think too much about the “work me” or my innie or whatever. I was just grateful to have a job that paid pretty well, and I’m gonna be honest it was great not having to take any office drama home. I would have been perfectly willing to keep working there until retirement if the lockdown hadn’t happened. But when I got out and realized I had been gone for nearly a month and that my innie had participated in this protest against lumon, I just couldn’t stomach going back. They offered me this big compensation package if I returned but I just couldn’t do it, knowing what I know now. The problem is, ever since I quit I can’t stop thinking about the other me. Even though I don’t know anything about him he’s still ME. And he was fighting with those other innies. But now he won’t ever exist again. And I just can’t get past it. Like, did I kill him? What do I do now? I hate that my only options are to go back to working for this awful company or never let him wake up again. Idk, it’s just fucked up.

Okay, I can’t believe I even have to post this but no, working for lumon because you don’t want to literally kill your other self doesn’t make you a bad person?? You do realize the innies are people too, right? And they can only exist at Lumon? Right??? Like we all saw that video they hijacked the news with. They have their own feelings and thoughts and lives, and yes those lives are only possible on the severed floor. But that’s not the fault of the workers. It’s the fault of Lumon’s. We should be focusing on Lumon and pressuring them to come up with a solution to grant innies access to the outside world. The workers are not your enemy.

Hi hi, I once again must apologize for how long this took. Though if it’s any consolation, this chapter is longer than both the previous two chapters combined so hopefully it will be worth the wait!
A few notes: first of all, this chapter is where the title of the fic truly comes into play, so brace yourselves for some social media insanity. This chapter comes with a few trigger warnings for panic attacks, mental illness speculation, and mentions of infertility/pregnancy, illness, and death (no major character death though!!) We’re still keeping the overall lighthearted tone, just want to make sure to cover my bases.
Also, I should have mentioned this earlier but please make sure you’re not using any site skins (including dark mode) on ao3 while reading this! The graphics have only been tested on ao3’s default “light mode” so that’s what I recommend using for an optimal viewing experience.
For the first part of this chapter (the magazine article), in order to “flip” the page you’ll need to hover your cursor over the cover and drag it to the left (if on desktop) or tap the cover image once (if on mobile). And another little tip, when you get to the “confessions” later on be aware that they may be more interactive than they appear. I would try clicking around on them and seeing if anything happens…

BACK FROM THE DEAD REBECK GULK
It started innocent enough. An ad, posted to a bulletin board within the halls of Ganz College, where Gemma Scout was a Russian Literature professor. “Need a little extra help starting your family? Find compassionate, revolutionary care at Lumon Fertility.” For Gemma, it seemed like a sign from the universe. This could be it: the chance for her and her husband, Mark, to start their family on their own terms.
What followed was far from the idyllic life she dreamed of.
Within months, the Scouts had set aside enough savings to book a treatment plan with Lumon Fertility’s leading doctor, Dr. Mauer. When less invasive methods proved unsuccessful, the Scouts ultimately opted for IVF. “The clinic had such a high success rate,” Gemma explained. “I thought it would only be a matter of time.”
But then the first round of IVF failed. “They said it was normal, that chances of pregnancy after the first round were less than 30%,” Gemma said. “We were disappointed, but we still had hope.”
The second round failed, too. Then the third. Then the fourth. By the time the seventh round failed, most of the Scouts’ initial hope had vanished, along with much of their savings. But Gemma was determined to see this through.
Then, things took an interesting turn. “The clinic started sending me things in the mail,” Gemma said. “Just little things. Puzzles, word games. I thought it was nice, something to take my mind off everything.”
Little did Gemma know, these seemingly inconsequential “games” marked the beginning of Lumon’s sinister obsession with her, which would soon develop into a nightmare that nearly took her life.

The thing that’s so depressing is I wish I could boycott Lumon but it has such a monopoly on everything that boycotting them is almost impossible. Especially in PE. Mark and Gemma Scout are staying in different houses

Ok first of all I promise I’m not some sort of crazy stalker. But lately I’ve realized that the new woman who recently moved into a house in my neighborhood is in fact Gemma Scout. She lives there with a couple other people but none of those people are Mark. In fact I’ve never seen him in the neighborhood once (trust me, I would have noticed). I don’t want to speculate on people’s personal lives but this does seem to lend credence to the theory that they’re divorced/splitting up?

Hear me out. She’s the CEO’s daughter. She’s an Eagan. Obviously I understand why her getting severed would be great PR, but there’s no reason why she would actually need to get the procedure done. After all how would anyone know? I think she faked it and then something happened that made Daddy mad and he cut her out of her inheritance. That would explain her behavior during Lumon lockdown and in the months since, how she keeps having these public breakdowns and denouncing Lumon. The whole thing reeks of “rich girl who’s never been told no suddenly has to make it on her own”. I give it three months tops before she comes groveling back to Lumon begging to be their puppet again.

Hello Helly. I’m sorry I haven’t responded. I just couldn’t take all this anymore. Sometimes when things get to be too much I just need to be alone for a while.
