' When Morning birds Call, Who Are You To Deny Them? '

Summary:

After sightings of a deer on its "hind legs," and untimely reports of 4 missing children from a local Cub Scout troop, a group of volunteers get together in an attempt to rescue them, before getting fogged in and unable to leave. They set up camp in the hope of waiting it out, but it seems things only get worse from here.

The Deer, a literal cult, weird ass notes, and dangerous animals stand in their way of rescuing the kids and freedom.

Chapter Text

Clementine's scarred hand chopped carrots; the knife Braxton had brought actually helped more in cooking rather than combat. Clanking of a metal pot lid in the background from Cassie cooking something, probably carrot stew. No meat until hunter or reid killed something. Everyone else was gone, gathering supplies or searching for any clues of where the kids had disappeared to.

Chop… Chop… Chop… Chop…

She pushed the stems into the fire, pushing the rest back into a messy pile for Cassie to use. It was funny, just a day ago she was in her small apartment; now she was in the deep woods. Camping in the open and looking for missing children. “Hand me that.” Cassie interpreted her thoughts with that firm tone they used, hand wildly gesturing behind her to the seasoning thing she brought.
Clementine didn't really know why she brought it, Cassie saying something about “you guys wanted me to cook, so I might as well make sure you guys will shut up..” in that sarcastic uninterested tone she always spoke in. Clementine handed the bottle to Cassie, hands brushing for only a moment before the cook snatched it and went back to dropping ingredients in the pot. Clementine went back to chopping carrots, having nothing worthwhile to do other than that…

Braxton followed Dianne through the woods like a very clingy shadow, saying something about "making sure she was safe,” as he followed her. She, of course, indulged in her boyfriend's silly behaviour so he wouldn't worry himself into an early grave. Dianne and him collected scrap as they walked over sticks and overgrown plants, before it narrowed into a medium sized clearing.
A large abandoned cabin stood in front of them, a couple of the windows shattered and large, broken holes in the roof. Dianne looked over to Braxton, the man looking amazed. “I did know they had cabins here!” the blonde looked over, smiling chipperly. “Me neither.” she shrugged, managing to say “lets go see whats inside, maybe there's scrap-” before braxton ran full speed up to it.
The two managed to open the abandoned cabin's door with some force, the rusted hinges made it hard to open it in the normal way, but Braxton kicked it down. Dianne stared at him for a moment, deciding to ignore it and focus on searching for scrap. She grabbed a dead fan off the shelf, the thing rusted and probably carried tetanus. She shoved it in her bag before she saw something shiny in the corner of her eye.

Coins?

She walked up, picking up the pile and squinting at it. The gold like coins had patches of moss on the sides and a strange campfire symbol in the middle. “Braxton, c’mere.” she called out, looking up to see him already distracted by the storage room. She rolled her eyes in adoration before she stuffed the coins in her pocket. Dianne walked up to the door beside the storage room, opening it before being knocked to the ground.

A Wolf.

Braxton shoved scrap in his bag, distracted so he didn't hear dianne call for him. He picked up a radio, the thing rusted and antenna bent, he shoved it in his bag, finger tips covered in orange from the residue. Braxton spotted a chest tucked in the corner, flipping the locks off the old thing. He saw one object in it, an axe in much better shape than his own. Braxton picked it up, ditching his old one, about to go show dianne before he heard a thud.

Then A Scream.

Braxton, before he could even register it, ran to the main room. He saw dianne on her back, her trusty hammer held in a wolf's snarling maw, claws trying to scratch.

How did a wolf get in here..?

He had no time to think about it, body reacting before his mind could; getting his new hatchet out and slamming it into the wolves torso. A large gorey cut on its torso now visible, It immediately focused its attention on him, charging with its jaws open. Braxton took a final swing and slammed it down as hard as he could on its head, blood and tissue splattering on his shirt and pants. And it dropped to the ground, an axe mark in its head.
Braxton stared at the wolf, now a corpse laying on the rotted wood flooring. He panted slightly before dropping to Dianne's side, “shit.. Are you okay?” he said breathlessly, checking her over. “M’fine. Got the hammer in its mouth before it could bite.” She stood, pulling him up by his shoulder. “Damn fucker knocked me over.” she said, more annoyed. Probably shock.
“What happened?” He shoved the wolf's corpse in his bag, supposing Hunter and Cassie could use it for something. “Opened the door over there.” she gestured, “wolf jumped out and on top of me.” Dianne grabbed some ammo from the floor of the new room. “Wonder how that got there,” Braxton commented, hauling the bag up and over his shoulder.
Dianne just shrugged, Braxton following as she headed out of the cabin.. “Guess I did need my knight in shining armor with me, huh?” she teased, hauling her bag on her shoulder. “I guess so.” Braxton sped up a little to keep pace with her “I mean, I'm so cool; who wouldn't?" he grinned, joking around with her. “Okay, little guy.” Dianne scoffed, “Let's get back before Lennox or Reid beats us.”

They got back to camp just before nightfall, the sun sinking below the forest trees ever so slowly, the sky a deep blue with stars poking from it. Cassie had already cooked dinner, some carrot stew. Clementine and some others were sitting and eating it. Braxton put the wolf corpse in front of Cassie, Dianne trying to ignore them now fighting over it. She put the items she found in the grinder.

Well, Except For The Coins.

Lennox eventually got tired of their bickering, he took the corpse away and the pair sat down and joined in. The soup was.. Unique.. To say the least. Nobody commented on it, probably in fear of Cassie laying into them, it was not helping she was in a bad mood from Braxton "violating health code.” Everyone was mainly quiet, Reid and Myles whispering about something. Their whispers were not the only thing circling the blazing campfire. Cassie stared at a bowl of soup, cold from being left out for so long. She turned to the others, counting. Eight, two people missing.

“Has anyone seen Hunter? Or Akari, for that matter.” She stared hard at the group, pissed off. Nobody said anything for a moment, Simon awkwardly turning to Clementine, the camper shrugging at him. “I think hunters in the woods. Said wolves were easier to track at night.” Lennox said, dry as ever. Cassie had to stop her eyes from rolling, god, it had been one day and she wanted to rip his stupid red hair out.
“I'm assuming Akari took his meal without checking in.” She huffed, pointing a spoon at the group, “Someone talk to him about count up because I'm sure as hell not.” Lennox gave a huff. “I'll do it,” he said with a disinterested tone, eyeing cassie before he returned to listening to Braxton talk about the wolf attack he and dianne faced; he wasn't quite paying attention to it all too well.

And when the woods went pitch black, they all went to sleep in their tents.

Except Lennox, waiting for Hunter to come back in case he did something stupid.

The woods were not safe at night

Not anymore.

Notes:

I FINALLY GOT THIS DONE. i was gonna add art at the end but art block so uh just the words >:)

also, the new update is really cool but the lobby is so ASS. this is not grow a garden, and if the devs need money make a tip gamepass instead of makeing the players re-roll?? the cabin where the roles were made a lot more sense but we got a stupid ahh desk and shoved the currency guy in the corner, the cabin was really pretty and the fourms are loaded with people saying the lobbys to crowded now and i agree, its litreally blocking one of the portal things and makes it hard to get there. anyways enough ranting XD

i plan to post chapters once a week, maybe more if i get ideas, but usually they will be on fridays or on the weekend. hope you guys are haveing a safe day/night, BYEEEE

(Art coming soon i swear)
