Work Text:

Scar would be lying if he said he wasn't a little bit boastful when he got to say "I'm going on a date," in response to Bdubs asking what had him so smiley.

His little brother gaped at him. "A date?! With who?" He questions. Scar gives him a cheeky smile and just says "Secret," before wheeling out the door.

Ignoring the yells of protest Bdubs gave from the porch, Scar continues onward to the park, feeling quite giddy.

Okay, so Scar may have fibbed a little bit. This isn't officially a "date," but a guy can dream, can't he? If he is being honest, which he isn't, he'd tell you that he and Grian are going to hang out at the park. But once again, Scar isn't being honest, so it's a date.

At the end of science class on Wednesday, Grian asked if he wanted to hang out outside of school sometime, which Scar readily agreed to. After a bit of texting they decided to meet at the local park.

Grian's already there when Scar arrives (weird given that Scar lives quite a bit closer to the park than Grian). His outfit isn't all that different from what they usually wear– a leather jacket, red sweater, and a long black skirt– but this time he has a pair of red earrings and a bit more makeup on. In other words, he looks stunning.

"Well hello there, Grian." Scar watches as Grian's expression brightens when they see him, with no small amount of satisfaction.

The truth is, Scar's had a crush on Grian for a while now. Just a crush. He hadn't, like, talked to him until a few weeks ago, so it wasn't anything serious. Scar just thought they were pretty and super cool. He'd never been a big fan of the whole "bad boy" archetype before, but something about Grian changed that.

Then he properly met them and it was like a whole new world had opened up. Grian was silly and smart and so funny. He likes philosophy and architecture and astronomy. He has a twin sister named Pearl. He would literally kill a man for his two best friends. He hasn't seen The Lion King which Scar thinks is punishable by death. And perhaps Scar's favorite fact, he likes Scar. Maybe not in the way Scar likes them, but still.

Scar is smitten.

"Hi, Scar. How's it going?" Grian asks conversationally as he starts to walk down the stone path alongside Scar.

Conversation flows easily between them like always. They go back and forth talking about whatever topic catches their interest for a good bit, Grian even lets him talk a bit too long about Anakin and Obi-Wan. Granted, Scar in turn lets Grian talk about his book for just as long.

It's as Grian's mid-rant about the metaphor used in the 3rd paragraph of chapter 5, that Scar says something he probably shouldn't have. "You're so pretty." He just looks so nice when he's talking about something he's passionate about. Like they're letting their guard down and allowing the real him to spill out. He says it so quietly that Scar thinks there might be a chance that Grian didn't even catch it. But no. The universe couldn't be that merciful for once.

"What?"

Scar crumples in on himself. "I- uh..." For a moment Scar considers lying, but he's discombobulated and has already reacted weirdly, so he probably wouldn't be able to get away with it if he tried. "I said that you're really pretty." Scar forces the words out, almost wincing.

Grian takes a sharp breath in. "Thanks. You too," he replies very quietly. Neither of them says anything for an agonizing few seconds. "Well, um, anyway. What was it you were saying, Grian?" Scar tries to brush it aside, but Grian has other ideas.

"Scar. Can I say something possibly weird?" Grian looks very nervous and Scar is enough of an optimist to get his hopes up. He nods. Grian takes a deep breath. "Scar, I know we haven't known each other for very long, but I think you're..." Grian pauses like he's looking for the best word to use, "great." He decides on. "And I would really like to go out with you sometime?"

Oh.

Oh.

So he wasn't just getting his hopes up. Grian actually feels the same.

Oh, Scar thinks he's gonna faint.

"Scar?" Grian grabs his attention and Scar realizes that he's taken too long to answer.

"Yes!" Scar starts a little too hastily. "Yes! I'd love to go out with you sometime!" He hopes he doesn't look overly eager. He feels overly eager.

Grian smiles. "Really?" They double-check. Scar nods rapidly.

In lieu of a response, Grian essentially launches himself at Scar, pulling him into a hug, careful not to knock over or damage his wheelchair. Scar reciprocates immediately.

The way Grian laughs is the exact opposite of his bad boy persona, high-pitched and light. Almost hysterical at times, but right now it's more dialed back, probably trying to protect Scar's eardrums. In the back of his mind, Scar likens it to a bird call. He'd pay money to hear it again

Feeling brave, Scar asks: "Are you my boyfriend now?"

Grian pulls his face away from its previous position buried in the crook of Scar's neck and looks at him, eyes crinkling with joy. "Yes." He answers simply.

While Scar had started this day off by lying to his brother that he was going on a date, he is fully truthful when he reports back to him that the date went well when he gets home.

Notes:

I'm not as confident in this one, but it's fine.
