Challenge the Muses

Summary:

People forget that the Muses are Goddesses, Titans.

This is a mistake.

Original poem inspired by reading Divine Might by Natalie Haynes (and some of her other books)

Notes:

I'm posting this because I read "Apollo, Prince of Gold (Overlooked, Forgotten, Underestimated)" by IzzyMRDB and promised myself I would actually do something with the Greek Mythology inspired poetry sitting in my docs.

For context: I'm using the version of the Muses presented by Natalie Haynes, referencing the time one guy said he was better than the muses- and got smote. and then the other time nine princesses said THEY were better than the Muses- and got smote.

If you need a recap of the Muses but don't want to read the book, Overly Sarcastic Productions has a lovely video about it! (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYd7cRFGLwQ&t=1s )

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Why, when you give

Do people think they can

Take, take, take

Nine

And nine

And one

Nine

And nine

And None

Gentle face

Gentle voice

Gentle mind

Soft heart

Did you forget that passion burns?

Fool boy, silly girls

What made you think

You could rival a god?

Let alone titan sisters?

Soft feet, swift steps

Sweet songs, soulful words, starry eyes

We are Goddesses

All this hides hard hearts and power

Do not challenge a Muse,

Mortal,

For Titans know no mercy

And we shall abandon you

To cold, numb, tragedy

I hope you enjoy! If you noticed any errors, please let me know.

What is your favorite myth, or books about myths? I'd love to read more, so please share!

I will probably post more of my myth inspired poetry soon, so stay tuned for that if you are interested <3
