Bright sun for monsters

Summary:

Garp had always hoped to give Luffy the best. He had no idea how powerful an impact his grandson would one day have on the world. But he was sure his hair would either turn completely gray or start falling out soon. After all, that bundle of chaos gave the old man a nervous tic every single time.

Chapter Text

Garp thought his grandson would be quiet like his son, but he had never been more wrong. Luffy was the embodiment of noise and energy, shining like the sun and always smiling. Even when Garp took him for training, he saw his attempts to make Luffy a Marine crumble. The dream of knocking piracy out of his grandson’s head seemed unattainable, and it worried Garp more and more.

Returning from duty, he shuddered at the sight of his grandson. The scar under his eye was a minor detail, but the straw hat brought back unpleasant memories. And his clothes… A black cloak with golden threads, golden chains with a Jolly Roger, bracelets with precious stones, and hair ornaments. The worst part was the shiny ring on his ring finger, which emanated a familiar Conqueror's Haki.

-Grandpa, you have no idea who I met!- Luffy enthusiastically waved his arms.

The story of meeting Red-Haired Shanks struck Garp right in the heart. He listened as his sweet, naive grandson was "crowned" by the former cabin boy of the Pirate King, who left the imprint of his Haki on him. Garp’s head was splitting, and he nearly fainted as Luffy continued to chatter. Not only did his grandson meet pirates, but he also ate a Devil Fruit.

-He gave me this hat as a sign of a promise. When I become the King of the Pirates, I’ll give it back!- Luffy finished, beaming.

"Forgive me, son. I failed to protect this child," Garp sighed heavily. He smiled slightly, filled his hand with Haki, and hit his grandson on the head.

-You little rascal! From today on, you’ll live on the mountain! And don’t you dare go down to the harbor!- Garp roared, grabbing the struggling Luffy. “It’s time for some real training!”

Garp took Luffy inside, where he removed the cloak and all the ornaments, leaving only the straw hat. The boy protected it, calling it a treasure. Then he brought his grandson to Dadan.

-This is Luffy. Look after him. Keep him away from Foosha and the port docks,- he commanded sternly. “Oh, and Ace, this is your brother,” Garp added, seeing a freckled boy.

-I don’t need anyone, old man,-Ace spat and ran away.

Luffy, seeing him, immediately forgot his resentment, broke free, and ran after Ace. Garp finally let out a sigh of relief.

Oh, the poor nerves of the Vice Admiral in the future! Little Luffy's fate was chaotic from birth. The whole world tried to adjust to the child's actions. Let's move back in time a bit, to the moment the Red-Haired Pirates arrived on the island.

Chapter 2: The Overthrow of Shanks

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The pirate ship glided peacefully through the calm waters of the East Blue. The red-haired crew was noisily discussing their recent arrival from the Grand Line. Shanks stared into the distance thoughtfully, uncharacteristically silent. Something inside him was unsettling. He usually trusted his gut feelings, but now he was unsure.

-Captain Yasopp says he sees land. It looks like we’ve arrived at Dawn Island,- Benn Beckman's calm voice said from behind him.

-Hmm,-the red-haired man mused, a slight smile on his face. -Then let’s head to the port! We could use some rest and a drink!-he announced cheerfully, hearing the crew’s approving cheers.

-Aye aye, Captain!-the pirates responded happily, beginning to prepare for docking.

Seeing how smoothly everyone was working, Shanks sighed. Maybe his premonition was wrong. After all, what could happen in the weakest ocean?

He had never made such a mistake before. Perhaps it was karma for all his deeds, or a joke from the ocean itself. But how could he order his own heart to stop pounding in his chest, or his mind to finally start working?

As soon as he stepped off the gangplank, a small something crashed into him at full speed, nearly knocking him down. More accurately, it was a child. With a smile like sunlight and bright onyx eyes that held stars within them. The boy was literally surrounded by a sunny aura. It made breathing difficult, and invisible chains seemed to hold his movements in check. Shanks also realized that his entire crew had frozen, not daring to move. Everyone was afraid to break the magic of the moment.

“Luffy, don’t run into strangers, especially if they’re pirates!” a green-haired girl’s shout broke them out of their daze, allowing them to take a deep breath.

“But Makino!” the child whined, pulling away from Shanks with puffed-out cheeks. “They're pirates, they must have tons of stories! I’m tired of sitting in the bar and listening to fishermen’s tales,” the boy complained almost resentfully.

“That doesn’t give you the right to run off just because you heard pirates arrived in the village! It’s dangerous!” the girl scolded with a kind smile. It was clear she wasn't angry, but concerned for the little ball of energy. “I apologize for him. He’s quite clingy with new faces, especially if they’re related to piracy,” the green-haired woman apologized politely, placing a hand on the boy’s black hair.

“Pha-ha! It’s no problem at all; I'm happy with his courage,” Shanks replied with a smirk, hiding his nervousness with a slightly goofy demeanor. “My crew and I aren’t mean pirates, and I can share a couple of stories with you, kid,” he winked, shuddering internally. As soon as the boy heard this, he rushed to Shanks and climbed into his arms, literally forcing him to hold him.

-Really?!- Luffy exclaimed with a bright smile, to which he received an affirmative mumble. -Then hurry up, come on, hurry!- he demanded, tugging on the white shirt. “Makino, can they stay in your bar?-He didn't need to know the answer to that question. His charm was just too influential on those around him.

-Of course. But only if they pay for all the drinks they order. I won’t make an exception for your new acquaintances,- the girl replied with a smile, looking at the radiant child.

-Oh, we’ve got enough to pay!- Shanks was quick to justify the trust. He knew he was being given a chance to be with this chaotic miracle, knowing he couldn't even harm the child.

So, at Partys Bar, the pirates laughed and drank rum from their mugs. Shanks chuckled, watching the boy pout. The kid was too naive and easily believed any lie, which made teasing him a favorite pastime.

-Well, don’t be so critical, Captain,-Benn scolded lightly, watching the relaxed man. The first mate was literally picking up on the changes in the crew, especially when it came to Shanks.

-Luffy, I have something truly shocking,- the man addressed the child conspiratorially, ignoring Beckman’s disapproving look. -I used to be a cabin boy on the Pirate King’s ship himself,- he whispered into the boy’s ear.

-WHAT?!- he shrieked with a shocked face, staring at the smug pirate. -That means you sailed with the Pirate King?!- he continued to yell in amazement for the whole bar to hear. This only made the laughter louder, and Makino just smiled slightly. -Tell me! What was it like to sail with a man like that?!- In the next second, the world seemed to freeze. The child reached out to Shanks, unaware that the room had filled with Conqueror's Haki. It was so weak that it was barely noticeable, but frighteningly familiar.

Everyone was plunged into silence; the noisy and drunken pirates shuddered. Greedy and disbelieving glances turned to the boy. Everyone doubted the reality of what was happening. But with each passing second of silence, the feeling of Haki became more distinct. It was at this moment that a tear of longing fell to the floor. And the feeling of familiar pressure vanished.

-Shanks?- Luffy addressed him uncertainly.

-I’m sorry,- he whispered softly, hugging the small body close, hiding the bitter tears of longing, despair, and emptiness. All of this exposed the pirate’s sense of loneliness. “I’m sorry,- he continued to repeat, clinging more and more to the bewildered child each time.

A small hand touched the red hair in comfort. Luffy felt the need to console him, even though he didn't understand what was happening at all. This was what finally defeated the red-haired Shanks.

Notes:

Here is almost the third chapter ready and releasing the second. All this is connected with the fact that I do not abandon the project for the next chapter I am writing a new one. Because there are quite a lot of developments and finally decided what will happen in the next one and it is a nightmare!! Everything is very bad. I had darker thoughts but I do not want to do black stuff.

Chapter 3: Ben's grey hair

Summary:

Attention here are collected time episodes about Shanks. I admit everything could have turned out differently but I decided to do it this way. At first I thought to divide them into two parts but decided to leave it like this.

Chapter Text

Ben let out an irritated puff of smoke from his cigarette. A vein throbbed in his forehead, his foot nervously tapped the floor, and his brow twitched. The first mate of the Red-Haired Pirates had never been pushed to this level of fury before. He was usually a surprisingly calm person who took everything with a stoic face. But now, looking at Shanks and Uta, his rage reached a new level.

-Please, no fighting. This day can’t get any crazier,- Makino said politely, chuckling softly.

-Then you should have stopped these two,- Beckman growled menacingly, biting down on his cigar.

-Well, I got a little distracted,- the girl defended herself, knowing how ridiculous it sounded.

-Oh, really?- the man snarled, glaring at the guilty faces of the crew. -You all have gone completely fucking insane! To think this was a fucking great idea!- he yelled, slamming his fist on the table. -Uta!- he roared, turning his attention to one of the culprits of this chaos. -You’re a little girl, almost the same age as Luffy. How could you let this happen?- he asked sharply, making the child flinch. -And you, Shanks,- he turned to the captain, -have you gone completely fucking nuts? He’s a fucking child!- the first mate scolded the red-haired man.

-But…- Shanks tried to object.

-No ‘buts’!- the man yelled again, hitting the table even harder. -You both need to understand! You are idiots who decided to have a wedding! It’s not just reckless, it’s illegal!- Benn continued to yell, glaring furiously at the two guilty fools. -I forbid you from having any contact with him, Uta,- he pronounced, looking at the girl who had lifted her head.

-But…- she tried to object and hold back the tears welling up.

-This is non-negotiable,- Benn crushed the child's resistance. -We have found a wonderful Island of Melody,- he said, clenching his hand into a fist, watching Uta’s eyes widen as tears began to stream down her face. -We are going there tomorrow.- Now his attention turned to the captain. -Unfortunately, I have no way of controlling your actions. But I want to make you take a blood oath that you will not bother Luffy after he turns seven,- he said sternly, making Shanks flinch.

-Benn,- the red-haired man growled menacingly, getting up from the floor and looking him straight in the eye. -Are you challenging me?

-No, I’m saving your ass and the gratitude in the boy’s eyes,- Beckman explained with a sigh. -In his eyes, you are a father figure, and if you really want to claim him, then let him become a pirate,- the man suggested, looking at the captain’s thoughtful face. -You can get closer as captains. This will also give Luffy a chance to show his level of strength,- he continued to push the red-haired man towards the most correct solution.

-Fine,- Shanks agreed and, drawing his own sword, said, -I, Red-Haired Shanks, give a blood oath with witnesses. To leave Luffy after he turns seven and await his rise in the era of pirates.- He infused his words with Haki, simultaneously cutting the palm of his left hand.

A pressure was felt in the air. The Red-Haired Pirates sighed in awe, little Uta was still crying on the floor, and Makino watched it all. With the first drop of blood that fell on the wooden floor, the mood changed. And it all started with such simple things.

Gifts to the Sun

Can stories of adventure be called a gift? For Luffy, without a doubt. He eagerly absorbed every word from Shanks, soaking in the tales like a sponge, especially those about the Pirate King.

-What was he like?- the boy asked, and his eyes sparkled with curiosity.

-Free,- one word, but in it, a whole universe. Shanks, having calmed down, sat thoughtfully on the floor. -So free that everyone envied him.

-Free?- Luffy repeated, not fully understanding.

-Yes, free. He could sail anywhere, challenge rulers, fight pirates, explore uncharted lands, and eventually find the One Piece,- the red-haired man smiled, seeing the excitement flash in the boy’s eyes. -He taught me a lot. It’s because of him that I have my own crew.

-The One Piece…- Luffy whispered, and a new, powerful desire was heard in his voice. -If I find it, will I become free too?- he asked, no longer asking Shanks, but himself.

Shanks heard him perfectly. His heart began to beat faster. For a moment, a picture flashed before his eyes: in the sun's rays, he saw not Roger, but an older Luffy. His wide smile, a black doublet made of expensive fabrics, and the straw hat that cast a shadow over his eyes. In Shanks's soul, flowers bloomed for the first time. They had not yet turned a bloody color, and they had not a single thorn.

But a deeply lonely person always tries to replace darkness with light, not noticing how the shadow mixes with his best intentions.

Golden Fever

Treasure chests lay on the deck of the Red Force. The pirate crew gathered around them, trying to claim the stolen gold. The captain and his first mate watched it all with indifference. Neither of them was particularly interested in the coins, and they didn’t try to pick out anything from the trophies.

-Hey, look!- Yasopp shouted, proudly raising his hand. In his palm was a slightly glistening black agate. -I’m sure Lu will like this,- he announced proudly, puffing out his chest.

-Ha, wishful thinking,- Lucky Roux chuckled, slapping a barrel with his hand. -I was able to get some dried monster meat,- he stated smugly, throwing down a challenge.

-Oh, come on!- Hongo snorted, with a mischievous smile. -You guys don't even have a chance,- he declared, placing a well-made wooden saber in front of him.

The tension grew, with each person showing what they were going to give the child. It all escalated into a loud argument, which the red-haired man watched thoughtfully. For the first time, he wondered: are stories enough? Of course, Luffy always listens to him and constantly follows him like a shadow. But is it enough to keep the sun’s full attention on him?

-Hey, you idiots, stop it!- Benn demanded, smirking at the foolish pirates. -The kid will be happy with literally anything,- the first mate explained, shaking his head.

-Yeah, don’t cause a mess on the ship,- Shanks muttered, without thinking, which made the crew freeze.

Lost in his thoughts, the man approached the chests. His gaze wandered over the jewels and landed on a red sapphire. Inside him, the first scarlet flower bloomed, its small thorns only slightly scratching without causing harm.

-Yeah, there really is no chance,- Shanks continued to mutter, taking the sapphire in his hand and hiding it in the pocket of his black cloak.

-Oh, you found something interesting?- Yasopp said uncertainly, trying to defuse the strange situation.

-Well, you’re not the only ones to take everything interesting,- the red-haired man replied with a smirk, his face returning to its usual foolishness.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Even the always calm Benn took a longer drag from his cigar. This change was the first warning sign, which was safely forgotten in the captain’s laughter.

̶S̶a̶n̶d̶a̶l̶s̶ ̶Gilded Fetters

The evening promised to be quiet and peaceful. Well, as much as that’s possible with two children racing through the street. Uta finally had the opportunity to travel with Shanks. She had been waiting for this for so long. She wanted to see for herself where her father so often disappeared to. The thought of him having another family crept into her mind. And it all turned out to be almost as she had suspected.

A nice green-haired girl named Makino often talked with Shanks, and he clearly enjoyed it. It seemed that this was the woman who was stealing his attention. But Luffy didn't fit into this scenario. At first, Uta thought the boy was just the bartender's son. But the woman treated him like a younger brother. At the same time, the man himself watched the boy intently. Maybe he was just caring for someone important to Makino.

-Let’s play tag,- Uta suggested, squinting slyly.

-You’re it,- she said quickly and started to run away from a tired Luffy.

The girl was well aware that she was behaving unfairly towards him. But she needed to vent all her anger on him. And she didn't particularly care that he was too young, trusting, and charming. No, his smile didn't warm her heart, and his eyes didn't make her chest feel tight. Uta didn't care about the uneven ground, the fact that he was running after her in flimsy flip-flops, or his clumsiness.

It was because of this feigned anger that the girl's foot accidentally got in Luffy's way. He stumbled over it and with a loud smack, fell face-first onto the ground.

-I’m sorry, are you hurt?- the girl asked with feigned concern, leaning over the lying child.

-I’m fine,- he assured her, lifting his head and revealing a bleeding nose, scratched cheeks, and a dirty face. -Now you’re it. Shishi!- In his wide smile, a missing tooth was visible. -Catch me!- Luffy shouted, touching her shoulder and quickly running in the opposite direction.

-Wait!- the girl yelled in a panic, trying to catch up to him. She really didn't want him to be seen in that condition.

But it was already too late. Reaching the bar, Uta froze in place. The Red-Haired Pirates were no longer laughing. They were anxiously gathered around something. The girl, afraid of punishment, wanted to leave and hide, but something told her to approach. Once she got close enough, she felt the pressure.

It was Shanks. Lightning bolts seemed to fly around him, even though the shadow of his straw hat fell on his face. He watched as Hongo fussed in front of Luffy, who was sitting on the veranda.

-Kid, are you sure your head doesn’t hurt? No dizziness? Nausea? Body aches?- the doctor asked worriedly, treating the cuts and bruises. Each time he flinched along with Luffy, who hissed at the treatment of his wounds.

-Shishi, I’m fine,- the boy assured him, smiling widely and not noticing that the sight of his knocked-out tooth made the crew's mood sink even lower. -The only thing that sucks is my flip-flops,- Luffy complained, lifting his foot with the torn shoe. -They were the only ones I had. Oh well, I’ll just toughen up my feet,- he laughed, completely unaware of the silent conversation taking place among the pirates.

-You don’t have a spare pair of shoes?- Shanks asked quietly, approaching the child. There was an edge to his movements and a poorly contained rage.

-Nope,- the boy answered lazily, taking the torn flip-flops off his feet.

-Benn, can you place an order with Elco* for a pair of shoes?- the captain ordered his first mate, without even looking in his direction. -I need a special order: Grillete*.-

-Whatever you say, Captain,- Benn agreed calmly. He knew it was better not to argue with him now. -Makino, I’ll use your Den-Den Mushi,- the man announced, walking past the girl.

-Of course,- the green-haired woman agreed, literally feeling the entire crew nervously watching the red-haired man.

-Dad,- Uta said quietly, getting his attention. -I didn’t mean to. It was an accident,- the girl whispered, trying to justify herself.

-…- Shanks turned to her, and the evening sunlight revealed the full rage in his eyes. -Uta,- his voice, filled with Haki, put pressure on his adopted daughter, and she fell to her knees before him.

-Daddy, I’m sorry! I’m sorry! It was an accident! I… I was just jealous. I thought you would leave me for that girl,- Uta begged her father through her tears.

He slowly walked up to her, his shadow looming over the child’s body. Then he slowly touched her and pulled her into an embrace.

-I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were jealous of me,- Shanks whispered gently into his daughter’s ear. -But you were wrong about one thing,- his voice, which had seemed gentle, instantly became threatening. -You shouldn’t have hurt him. Everything in me wants to show you all the torments of hell. Because I’m not interested in Makino.- His embrace became painful, as if thorny vines had pierced his skin. -I hope this doesn't happen again,- he warned, pulling back slightly and looking into the girl's eyes with a luminous gaze.

-Yes, Daddy!- she nodded her head with a blissful smile. Although the tears had not stopped flowing.

Uta seemed to forget all the negative emotions she had directed towards Luffy. They were enveloped by vines with buds of blood-red flowers. Her heart began to bleed from the thorns that were penetrating inside.

-Uta!- the black-haired boy shouted, waving to her. -Let's play again!- he smiled brightly, radiating a solar energy that penetrated inside and dispelled most of the feeling.

-Yes!- she replied happily, feeling the vines inside her wither and fluffy white buds bloom.

-But first, you should wait for new shoes,- Shanks distracted her, kneeling down in front of the boy and looking at his bruised feet.

In his mind, an image of sandals appeared. Elco is a master of his craft, creating any design to order. One of his well-known works is Grillete. Comfortable to use, with a soft lining that doesn’t chafe the foot. But most importantly, it has a golden rim on which you can engrave anything you want in a dead language. The red-haired man could afford to satisfy his desire in this way.

Black Veil and a Ring on the Finger

In the moonlight, a sapphire ring glowed faintly, glinting weakly in the red-haired man's hand. The desire sealed within it pressed on him more and more. Memories, locked in the most secure vault, burst out, hiding all the darkness of the bloody flowers. In their place remained the rotting wounds of promises that an egoist, desperate to possess the sun, had broken. For this, he had to pay with oblivion. Only sometimes did the tightening collar allow him to feel the desired presence.

His eyes closed, and a dreamy smile blossomed on his lips. A fever boiled in his chest, turning into snakes that conjured the most wonderful image he had ever seen.

The clearing was decorated for a wedding celebration. Most of the Red-Haired Pirates crew were waiting. Only Hongo and Benn were absent. The former was distracting the captain's right hand because Benn would never have allowed such chaos. In the center of the clearing stood a small platform for the ceremony. Behind it, like a priest, stood Uta. In her hands, instead of a Bible, was a picture book.

- Please, just stand still for a little longer, - the girl pleaded with the sunbeam.

- I'm bored, - the black-haired boy replied listlessly. He wanted to eat the pie Lucky Roux had promised him as soon as possible, and he also wanted to take off the rather massive black cloak. To be honest, he didn't understand at all why he had been dressed in strange shiny things, given a bouquet of flowers, and asked to participate in the strangest game.

Uta sighed heavily and nervously looked at the path down which Shanks was supposed to come. They didn’t have much time. Hongo couldn't distract Benn for long, and they also shouldn't forget about Ms. Makino, who was locked in the bar's pantry.

It seemed that everything would fall apart and they wouldn't have another chance, when a man appeared in their sight, dressed in a more solid white outfit. Of course, it bore little resemblance to a wedding suit, but it was the best they could find among the red-haired man's few belongings.

The pirate didn't understand what his crew was up to, but he suspected their mischief. His daughter’s request had greatly puzzled him. But as soon as the clearing was revealed to him, the pieces of the puzzle came together into a complete picture. His head immediately swam, a vine squeezed his throat, its thorns piercing his skin and beginning to bleed. The darkness in his mind turned into a fire that burned his bones. The desire he had held back all this time turned into energy, bursting forth. Before his eyes was a sight that made his mouth water, his fingers tremble with impatience, and his pupils stretch like a predator’s.

Oh, this miracle would belong to him alone. Step. He would offer it prayers every day. Step. He would lock it in golden chains and hide it in a place where only the red-haired man had access. Step. Yes, right in front of him stood the living embodiment of the sun. All he had to do was touch it, bind it, and put a ring on it. Then everyone would know who it belonged to.

Shanks saw nothing but him. Only the brightest ray lured him into its nets. His hand almost touched those soft hairs when a deafening blow to the head threw the man to the side. Lying on the ground, he lifted his head and looked with fury at a heavily breathing Benn. In the man’s hands was a pistol, and its barrel was pointed at the captain. Just as the red-haired man was about to get up, a shot rang out, and his consciousness plunged into da

Chapter 4: Drunkard Garp and his complaints about life

Chapter Text

A mug is slammed down on the table with a crash, with only foam remaining at the bottom. The seemingly ordinary sound makes everyone in the bar flinch and hurry to leave. It’s not every day you see a sight like a drunk vice-admiral, especially when that person is Garp. The man with the iron will, courage, and strength that vanquishes his enemies, now looks like a desperate drunkard trying to drown his sorrows in alcohol.

From the moment he arrived, it was clear that this time he didn't come to see Makino. His gaze was too wild, his movements too ragged, as if he were lost in space. That’s why many rushed to leave even before the marathon of alcohol pouring began. The rest left with each new mug he drank. So, only the green-haired girl and the old man hunched over the bar counter remained.

- Why?! - Garp asked desperately, hitting his head on the table. - What did my family do to anger the gods? - the man continued to hit the table.

- What happened? - Makino asked quietly, carefully placing a new mug of the amber liquid.

- Luffy, - Garp groaned, raising his head. It was impossible to tell what state his mind was in from his face. His emotions changed too quickly, from a quiet rage to complete pain in his eyes. - I only left for a couple of months, - he whispered, taking a gulp of the burning drink.

- You were gone for more than a couple of months. But I suppose your condition is related to the incident at Gray Terminal, - the green-haired woman said almost calmly, trying not to remember the anxiety the whole situation had caused her. At that time, she rushed to the burning forest, but the villagers stopped her. - Your grandsons went missing back then. But I'm glad they came back unharmed. So, I don't quite understand your condition.

- That's only half of it, - he snapped, hitting the table with his fist, for which he received a disapproving look from the girl. - My son helped the poor villagers, but the three troublemakers ran into another problem, - the man muttered, drinking the alcohol to the bottom. - Sabo lost his memory and is under Dragon's care, Ace was almost lured into Whitebeard's crew, - the old man explained, squeezing the glass mug. - Oh, it would be great if that was all. But Luffy was with them. And that ball of chaos always attracts trouble.

-So. What happened to Sabo and Ace doesn't bother you as much, - her voice was full of condemnation.

- It's much more complicated, - Garp tried to justify himself, not knowing that he sounded even worse. - If they can take care of themselves, then Luffy... he's too naive and trusting. Unfortunately, that red-haired bastard has already taken advantage of it. - He explained with a sigh, looking at his hands with despair. - Now, the Whitebeard Pirates too. They managed to proclaim the child the Pirate King. And the commander of the first division even put a wedding ring on him. But no, that’s not the end of it. The fucking Hawkeye managed to swear loyalty to him and promised to train his first mate in the future.

Makino watched Garp hit his head on the table again without pity. She had long suspected that something like this would happen, and she was just glad that they had brought the children home. After all, it could have turned out much worse. And the boy being proclaimed King only made her happy. After all, only one Yonko had done that in her memory. For which he paid a heavy price. Most likely, the same situation would happen now. So the girl wasn't particularly worried.

Notes:

It's all pretty weird, but I'll explain. Initially, I had a different idea, but it all ended up being broken down into arcs like Chance, now Ace and Marco. And then I have a problem, I can't interact with the character Ace normally. I'm literally at a standstill, with zero thoughts. Which makes it hard for me to write chapters with him. I had to go through a lot, eventually coming to the tsundere behavior model. It should be funny, but when I started writing the next chapter, I only got a couple of sentences. I hope that releasing this one will help me move forward. But it will take more time.

Chapter 5: Shell and Fire

Chapter Text

As the head of a mountain bandit gang, you get used to taking responsibility. But even after many years of dealing with the old Marine, you can't predict his actions. Dadan didn't expect the idiot to decide to turn her home into a daycare. Everything would have been fine, but the brought-in Ace turned out to be a pain in the rear. He constantly got into dangerous situations, came back late at night, and looked and acted like a stray cat—denying any help, hissing, and snapping. The woman thought she had managed to find a common ground with him: he brings home game, and she gives him shelter. Although no one was planning on kicking him out, this was the only way Ace could perceive his stay with the bandits.

This fragile balance was shattered by Garp. Honestly, that man always brought trouble, but Dadan had to tolerate it, because only her supervision of Ace ensured her protection.

And so, coming once again, the old man brought another child with him. Luffy, who had been radiating discontent, lit up the moment he saw Ace. His smile literally struck her to the core. Even the rascal sitting on a tree branch froze. It was as if the sun itself was shining before them, making the depths of her hardened soul feel warmer.

-He's going to live with you now. Look after him,- Garp requested, standing beside the bewildered woman.

-Who is he?- she asked in a hoarse voice, looking towards the forest where the boys had disappeared.

-My foolish grandson,- the man answered curtly, cutting off any further questions. -He's too bright. That's why he needs to become stronger.- His face became severe, and fear was visible in his eyes.

For the first time, he showed such emotions to her. Before this, Garp hadn't shown much concern for Ace. Apparently, he understood the child's potential and didn't bother him with care. But his own grandson, it seemed, caused him concern. The woman could understand why: the child radiated too pleasant an energy.

After that, chaos literally took over their home. The energetic child knocked over everything in his path, whether it was an attempt to be the first to get to the food or an accidental collision with someone in the house. The saving grace was that all this energy was directed at Ace. He literally latched onto him like a limpet and wasn't afraid to get bitten, hit on the head, or have hurtful words thrown at him in a fit of rage.

-Get away from me! I don't want to hang out with you!- the freckled boy yelled, pushing Luffy hard. The child fell to the floor. -I don't need company!- Ace hissed, then ran outside.

-Why don't you leave him alone?- Dadan once asked after another incident.

-He's just lonely,- the boy replied, getting up from the floor and smiling widely. -I want to free him from the pain he lives with and show him that he’s worthy of love!-

-Hmm,- the woman chuckled softly, wondering how, despite being foolish, he managed to see the truth. -Then you should look for Ace in the Gray Terminal; the dump is there.-

-Shishishi, thanks, Dadan!- the shining ray of light thanked her and ran outside.

-Just bring back some food later! I don’t have enough to feed two bottomless pits!- she yelled after him with a slight smile.

The soft patter of hurried feet was barely audible in the forest. The summer sun's rays, breaking through the tree branches, seemed to play in his unruly hair. The quiet chirping of birds accompanied him the whole way, as if showing him the way.

-Ace!- Luffy joyfully shouted, seeing a familiar figure in the distance, near which a blond youth was standing.

-Damn it all!- the boy cursed, pushing the one next to him. -Run, now!- he ordered, then dragged his friend along.

-What's going on?- the blond youth asked in bewilderment, turning out of curiosity.

-Ace, wait, introduce me to your friend!-

-Ignore him, Sabo! He's just an idiot!- the freckled boy grumbled, continuing to run.

-Okay,- the one running next to him easily agreed.

-Wait!- Luffy pleaded, falling slightly behind and losing sight of them. -Oh, we're playing hide and seek!-

-Listen,- Sabo whispered quietly, trying to warn his friend.

-Stay quiet; he’ll leave as soon as he realizes we aren’t here,- Ace ordered, hissing slightly.

After a long time of fruitless searching, Luffy stumbled upon something shiny. Pushing away the garbage, he discovered what was clearly hidden gold. The boy looked at the shiny things with little interest, when suddenly two boys were over him. Ace had a long rope in his hands, and Sabo held an iron pipe.

-You found something that doesn't belong to you, and now you'll pay for it,- the black-haired boy growled menacingly, pouncing on him.

-Stop, wait, this is…- Luffy wasn't allowed to finish, as he was tied to the trunk of a large tree without resistance. -I really didn't mean to.-

-Yeah, right. You’re just like your old man,- Ace said with a smirk, crossing his arms over his chest. -He clearly told you to spy on me, but I just didn't fall for your face. And, apparently, you had to try another method: taking all our gold!- At first, his voice was even, but it gradually turned into a menacing shout.

-P...please…- the ray of sunshine whimpered.

-In a situation like this, it means death.-

-A…

-A?- the boy repeated mockingly, looking at the child’s bowed head.

-Listen, isn't this too cruel?- Sabo whispered quietly, watching the tied-up child begin to tremble.

-He has to understand the rules of life; this will be a lesson,- Ace answered sharply, feeling something in his chest constrict. From the very first moment, he wanted to get rid of the strange feelings.

-P…please, Ace,- Luffy stammered, raising his tear-streaked face.

This made the two boys freeze in place. Their breathing quickened, and their heads spun from the pressure. They had never seen such a cute face. Immediately, a blush flared up on their faces. Ace looked at Sabo in a panic. The other boy was completely dazed. It seemed even his soul was leaving his body.

-I’m… sor…ry, I… just… wan…ted to be… friends,- tears flowed even more heavily down the boy’s face. -To be… loved…-

-What?- Ace quietly asked. He felt like he'd been struck by lightning, and he fell to his knees, unable to move properly.

-You… d…deserve… love.-

-…- His face turned bright red, and as if forgetting about the oppressive feelings, he jumped up, striking him on the head. -Idiot! Who said I needed that?! Especially from a crybaby like you!- Ace shouted in embarrassment, shaking Luffy by the shoulders. -I can take care of myself!-

-But… you're lonely,- the boy spoke the truth. -That's why you're always looking for something to fill the void.-

-Tch,- he clicked his tongue, pulling away and hitting him on the head again. -Let's untie this fool,- the black-haired boy finally gave up, turning to Sabo.

-Shishishi, I knew you were nice!-

-No, I'm not!- he blushed brightly, hitting Luffy on the head again.

-You're acting like a girl,- the blond grumbled, untying the rope, for which he also received a hit. -Hey, what was that for?-

-Keep clowning around, and I'll bury you,- Ace threateningly cracked his knuckles.

Luffy and Sabo looked at each other, giggling slightly, after which it all escalated into loud laughter. They both lay on the ground, holding their stomachs. After all, they had never seen a furious cat with a bright blush before.

Chapter 6: Chasing the Blue Bird.

Chapter Text

-Oink!- a pitiful squeal echoed, startling many of the mountain's inhabitants. They hurried out of the way of the panicked beast, which seemed to be crying and thrashing about, trying to shake off the children chasing it.

-Hey, Luffy! What the hell are you doing in front?!- Ace yelled at the boy running ahead.

-Is that all you care about?- a indignant Sabo shouted, leaping over an obstacle in his path. -We had a plan, and you two decided to make it a race!-

-Shishishi, but the plan was boring!- Luffy laughed, almost tripping over a tree root.

-Plans are pointless. Especially with him,- Ace agreed, nodding his head.

-But that doesn't mean you both have to risk your lives!- the blond continued to protest, giving a furious look to a smirking Ace.

-Ahhhhh!- Their bickering was interrupted by a loud scream. It was Luffy, who had managed to catch the wild boar but had gotten tangled in a tree branch. He and the beast rolled down the slope together.

-Luffy!- both boys exclaimed and hurried after him.

-Ugh!- Luffy groaned, rolling further and faster down the slope.

-Hey, is that a cliff?- Sabo cried out in alarm, trying to speed up while keeping his top hat from flying off.

-What the hell, how did it come to this?- Ace asked in bewilderment, almost catching up to Luffy. At that moment, Luffy bounced off a rock ledge and flew into the air.

-Aaaa… the sea!- the boy screamed, waving his arms, trying to keep his balance.

-Oink!- a loud squeal echoed, followed by a splash.

-Luffy!- both boys shouted, tripping on the same rock and falling into the ocean after him.

Many bubbles rose to the surface, disturbing the inhabitants of the deep. Luffy had lost consciousness from the water, and he was rapidly losing air, sinking deeper. A wild boar was in the same state nearby. The poor animal was unconscious from fear. Sabo, with his cheeks puffed out to hold his breath, looked around, trying to get his bearings, and noticed Ace paddling with his hands to grab the sinking boy. Of course, he also needed to get the beast, though carrying two rather heavy bodies was difficult. The blond swam over to help, and together they surfaced.

-Haaah!- The boys tried to catch their breath and recover from the sudden submersion, not noticing a sea monster approaching them from the depths.

The boys were in mortal danger. Only two of them were recovering, trying to find the direction to the shore. And Luffy wasn't even able to wake up. His stomach was still bloated with water. But they were saved by a bird that suddenly appeared and scooped them up.

-What a day!- both boys exclaimed, trying to get out of its strong grip. The bird only gripped them tighter until it dropped them onto a sandy beach, landing not far from the heavily breathing boys.

-Luffy!- they remembered, rushing to him and starting to push the water out of him.

-Wwuggh…- A stream of water literally poured from the boy's mouth; it seemed even a mini-rainbow appeared. -Gah-ha!- a cough rang out, which was immediately interrupted by a loud grumble from his stomach. -Meat,- he muttered, getting to his feet and looking with a hungry gaze at the large blue bird.

-Kyu?- it tilted its head in confusion, watching with caution as the aura around the child it had just saved changed.

-MEAT!- Luffy screamed, ignoring the shouts of the two boys, and started chasing the annoyed bird along the beach.

Chapter 2: The Chase for the Blue Bird

Smoke from a burning campfire rose into the evening sky. The sun had almost set, and soon the night would fully reveal the stars. On the beach by the fire sat four: three boys and a rather large blue bird, whose feathers fluttered like living fire. Sabo looked at it with suspicion, feeling uneasy about the situation. The only good thing was that they had food. He now turned the roasting wild boar on the spit and placed the fish on the other side.

Ace kept pulling Luffy back to him. He literally felt annoyed with the bird. Its gaze seemed to mock him, and a threatening aura hovered around it, to which Ace only received huffing sounds and eyes rolled from boredom. But what bothered him most was the reaction of the little ball of energy, who didn't seem to understand why Ace was hissing and growling.

Sabo, watching this, sighed heavily. The fatigue from today was catching up with him. All the muscles in his body ached, and his head was splitting.

-Luffy, here!- he shouted, throwing him a roasted fish, which immediately disappeared into a literal black hole. Not even bones were left, which made the boy choke. Ace hurried to help, gently patting him on the back.

-Shishishi, thanks!- Luffy said with a sunny smile. Without asking, he grabbed a couple more fish, for which, of course, he received a burn and a blow to the head from all three: Sabo, who reminded him it was dangerous; Ace, with concern, realizing he couldn't stop him in time; and the mysterious bird, who irritably touched the burns on his palms with its blue-and-yellow flame. -This is so cool!- Luffy said in admiration, ignoring the sighs of everyone.

-I've never heard of birds being able to heal,- the blond said thoughtfully, sitting back by the fire and turning the wild boar. One side of it was badly charred from being on its side for too long.

-Yeah, it's too suspicious for an animal,- Ace said with irritation, crossing his arms over his chest. For this, he received a peck on the head from the bird. -Hey, don't get too comfortable! And just fly away!- With a threatening growl, he butted heads with the bird.

-Pfft,- it seemed to only get more annoyed by the boy's angry stares, which caused literal fire in his eyes. The bird laughed, dodging a rock flying at it.

-Shishishi, Ace and the wonder-bird are friends!- Luffy said happily, with a new skewer of fish in his hand.

-She's annoying!- Ace shouted in annoyance, his face red with embarrassment.

-Kyu!- the little bird agreed, nodding its head and flapping its wings.

-Pfft. It looks like a mating dance between two idiots,- Sabo rasped through his laughter, watching as they froze and began to yell at the blond even more furiously. Honestly, he himself didn't know why he said that. The nerves from the day must have found an outlet in a joke that clearly agitated both of them. This confirmed Sabo's suspicions: the strange bird was definitely not simple; it was probably a person with a Devil Fruit, just like Luffy. It was just strange that this one stayed in its animal form. He should watch it more closely. Ace would help in this puzzle, too.

-What's a mating dance?- Luffy asked with interest, which made everyone freeze. It seemed even the sound of lightning rumbled around the three of them.

-Uh…- Sabo trailed off awkwardly, literally feeling the murderous stares on him. -I…- He couldn't even justify himself before he was grabbed and dragged into the bushes.

-???- Luffy blinked in confusion, hearing strange noises, but he was more interested in the wild boar, which had started to smell burnt.

A small hand reached out to take the carcass, but two blows landed on his head.

-The moment I turn my back, you're already about to get burned again!- Ace scolded, looking sternly at the guilty face.

-Kyu!- came the agreeing cry of the bird, which rustled its wings.

-And you, Sabo, think before you speak!- the freckled boy hissed, leaning closer to him. -He's literally a sponge. If you say something wrong, his whole perception will twist it the other way.

-Yeah, I'm sorry. The fatigue made me say something I shouldn't have,- the blond apologized, taking the charred wild boar off the fire. After that, he divided it into three parts, two of which he gave to the two boys.

Luffy was about to eat, but he looked toward the bird. With its eyes closed, it was resting not far from them. Without knowing why, he could feel the bird's pain coming from its left wing. And he remembered how it winced when it moved it. It must have injured it while saving them from the sea king. Maybe if he did something, it would feel better. So, getting up from his spot, he walked over to it.

-Here, you should eat,- he offered a part of the food.

-You're offering food?!- the boys exclaimed from behind.

-Yeah?- Luffy confirmed, turning his head to them.

-Knowing you, I was sure I wouldn't see you do that,- Ace said wearily with a smirk, to which Sabo nodded in agreement.

-Hey, I share my food with you all the time!- he complained, puffing out his cheeks, which earned him some chuckles that turned into laughter. The boy turned to the bird in dissatisfaction. -Don't listen to them,- he grumbled, placing a part of his portion in front of it.

-Kyu!- In gratitude, it placed its left wing on the boy's head, wincing slightly.

And that was all he needed. In the next moment, his palms gently touched the wing, feeling the warmth of the blue flame, after which he gently touched his lips to the spot where the wound most likely was. (The phoenix's fire had already healed part of the wound, but the pain remained.)

-Luffy! Kyu!- cries rang out from all sides. It seemed he had done something wrong again. Ace was throwing punches at the bird, Sabo's mouth was wide open in shock, and the bird itself was in confusion, allowing itself to be hit.

Chapter 7: Moon and kitchen

Chapter Text

The boys were lying on blankets in the bandits' mountain hideout. Loud snores filled the air from all sides. Ace was making the same sounds, even drooling, and the saliva was dripping onto Sabo. Sabo grumpily nudged Ace with his elbow, trying to find the third person, as Luffy used to lie between them. Luffy was indeed sleeping, but he woke up because he wanted a snack. He carefully extracted himself from the tangled arms that didn't want to let him go. So now the two boys were tossing and turning, searching for warmth, and woke up with displeased faces, their hands sleepily looking for the one who had left.

Meanwhile, a loud smacking sound came from the kitchen. If someone had walked in half-asleep, they would have had a heart attack. In the light of the refrigerator, a small gremlin with a mouth stretched wide from food was visible. Its black eyes looked especially creepy, seemingly flashing with red lights. This was the scene Dadan walked in on, frozen in the doorway.

-You little brat!- the woman hissed, jumping towards the boy and slamming the refrigerator door shut in front of him. -You ate the breakfast food again.- A menacing shadow loomed over the guilty-looking child. -What happened to you guys today anyway? You came back late at night and looked like you'd been thrown into water and pulled out just as fast. And Ace and Sabo's faces showed a whole spectrum of emotions, from wild exhaustion to the loss of their own souls.

-Well, first we hunted a boar. I was running ahead, which really annoyed Ace and Sabo. Of course, I managed to catch it, but the ground suddenly gave way under my feet, and then we all ended up in the water, one after another. As they told me later, a huge blue bird saved us. She's so cool; her feathers are like living fire. They feel so soft and warm. But I didn't know that, because I woke up on the sand, and my stomach was rumbling, and Birdie was sitting in front of me,- Luffy described the events vividly, not noticing how Dadan's face was getting darker and darker.

-Birdie?- she asked hoarsely, taking out a couple of cigars and lighting them. She desperately needed to calm her nerves.

-Yep, that's the name I gave her. But now, about something else. So, I wanted to eat, so I lunged at the bird. Of course, Birdie didn't like that. And I chased her all over the beach while Ace and Sabo ran after me. They were even shouting. But my hunt was stopped by a peck on the head. It was pretty painful, even though I'm rubber. It felt like Grandpa's 'fist of love.' So she just threw me back every time I got too close and almost touched her,- Luffy smiled widely and laughed, rubbing the top of his head. -Shi-shi-shi, if it weren't for Sabo, it probably would have gone on and on. But the boar was so delicious! I just don't get why they were so surprised when I shared the food.

-Pha-ha-ha, oh yeah, I can understand their surprise,- the woman laughed quietly, getting an offended look in return.

-You're laughing too,- Luffy pouted, turning away with a frown. -And after the kiss, they were saying something weird. They said, 'Forget about the question about the wedding dance.'

-Wait, what?- the woman asked, opening her mouth in shock, causing the cigars to fall to the floor. -Repeat that, please.

-Well, Ace and Birdie seemed to be competing. He kept lunging at her, and she would peck him on the head,- Luffy laughed a little louder as he remembered. -And Sabo called it a 'wedding dance'

-Ha-a-a,- Dadan sighed heavily, putting out the cigars with her shoe. -We'll deal with that later; right now, I'm more interested in the story with the kiss.

-The little bird's wing was just hurting. She was obviously injured saving us,- his face became sad, and his head dropped down. -I just thought kisses could ease the pain,- at these words he squeezed his eyes shut and put his hands on his head. At that moment, a slight, hammering pain arose, but it quickly passed. -So I just don't understand what the problem is. I used to do it with Ace and Sabo. Did I do something bad?

-No, of course not,- the woman's voice became warmer, and she hugged the boy, placing her hand on his head. -There's nothing wrong with that, it's just that the boys are too shocked. But you should stop doing that with everyone,- her voice became stern at the end.

-But I don't want the people I care about to be in pain,- Luffy argued, almost crying. -They're just kisses, and they used to feel better from them.

-And did you do it in secret?- Dadan asked, pursing her lips into a thin line.

-Well, only at night. Ace always hits me on the head when I show my love, and Sabo says I took care of myself first,- he complained, sobbing sadly.

-Luffy,- the woman sighed heavily. She knew the child just didn't understand the two boys.

Ace had been under her care for a long time, even back when there were more bandits in the Gray Terminal. It was hard for him to accept any care from others, because he knew who his real father was. Hearing that the Pirate King's child had no right to live, and not knowing a mother's love or a father's care, he grew up with hatred directed at him. That continued until he met Sabo. The blond boy was also clearly lonely, but he had clearly run away from his family. Which was sadder: not having a family from birth or having a family that was simply terrible? One thing was good: they both found their own family in each other. Luffy's arrival made them happier. But in Ace's eyes, there was something more than just attachment, which he tried to hide with his usual behavior. Maybe she should have been concerned about this, but she wished him happiness. Even if it was just a childhood crush.

-Let's go to sleep,- the woman led him back and helped him lie down in the outstretched arms of the two boys, who immediately fell asleep, hugging the child from both sides.

Chapter 8: Chapter Polyana and the Bird House

Chapter Text

Ace angrily hammered a nail into a board, fuming that Luffy had brought a bird with them. The bird seemed to know his thoughts, watching him with a mocking snort that made him want to rip out its feathers or just roast it. Still, he couldn't deny she had saved them from the water and kept an eye on the restless Luffy, who had nearly fallen off the small platform they were building for their future treehouse—a project they envisioned as a pirate ship.

They had chosen a high spot on the mountain with a view of the Gray Terminal and Foosha Village. The village was peaceful, though people looked at them with caution. Still, they were kind, giving them food, clothes, and tools that were a huge help for their treehouse.

The work was going well, and they hoped to finish before winter. Then they could become true captains. Of course, Dadan and Garp's -Fists of Love- would be a problem.

Their stomachs rumbling broke the sound of the hammer. It was time for lunch, and they needed to find food quickly to avoid another disaster like yesterday. A vegetable patch would be perfect.

-Sabo,- Ace called to the blond boy laying down new boards. -Let's go to that field. I bet there's stuff to pick.

-Oh, the vegetables,- Sabo said, turning to Luffy. -Hey, let's go! I don't want you just lunging at everything again,- he chuckled, recalling yesterday's chase.

-It's not my fault I'm hungry,- Luffy pouted, dropping his hammer and jumping to the ground.

-You coming, little bird?- Ace teased Birdie. The blue bird cooed grumpily. -You'd better hurry. Luffy's a little devil,- Ace said with a smirk as he climbed down the ladder.

-Kyuu,- the bird sighed, shrinking and landing on Ace's shoulder.

-Hey, don't get greedy!- Ace swatted at her, but she clung on stubbornly.

-Knock it off, we've got more important things to do,- Sabo said with a smile, trying not to laugh.

Ace was annoyed but gave up. He didn't get why the bird clung to him, but figured it was because Luffy was too much to handle, and he himself was likely to get into a dangerous situation with him. Sabo was their only hope.

They soon reached a clearing full of large vegetable stalks. They found a bounty of carrots, radishes, and even a large centipede they dug up. The boys ran from the centipede, which chased them relentlessly. Birdie tried to help, but Luffy told her not to.

-I need to get stronger to become the King of the Pirates!- he declared proudly, standing on the centipede's carcass.

-Kyu!- the bird squawked in surprise.

-Yeah right. You're too much of a crybaby for that,- Ace teased, and Luffy jumped up, hitting his back. -See? You take everything too seriously.

-I agree,- Sabo said, starting a fire.

-I do not!- Luffy protested, breaking the centipede's shell into makeshift plates.

They all stared at him and sighed, knowing it was no use trying to get through to Luffy.

-Man, I wish I had some meat,- Luffy complained, chewing the rubbery centipede. It tasted like fish, and the smell reminded him of the shrimp Shanks used to give him, which were in a delicious sauce. He wasn't allowed to eat them on his own because he always got messy. -Or sauce.

-Yeah, I agree,- Sabo sighed, cringing. -It's like chewing on rubber.-Hmmmm,- Ace and Birdie hummed in unison, looking at each other. -Let's have a competition: who can find the best sauce. You two can be the judges,- Ace challenged the bird, who snorted mockingly and proudly lifted her head.

-Awesome! A treasure hunt for the King of the Pirates!- Luffy cheered, throwing his hands in the air.

-Hmm, if this wasn't so weird tasting, I'd stop you, but I'll be the judge,- Sabo agreed. -You have fifteen minutes to find ingredients and make a sauce,- he announced. -Go!

The two of them dashed into the forest, confirming Sabo's suspicion that the bird was a person. Her strange appearance and humanlike behavior made it obvious. He wondered why she stayed with them. His eyes fell on Luffy, who was impatiently eating the centipede meat. Maybe it was Luffy's strange charm. It would be interesting to see what would happen.

Notes:

I have an idea to make a couple of extra chapters with Shanks. Like extra scenes that were but weren't. LOL. In any case, should I make a ff in this or create a new one and make a collection. The scenes are small but also unwritten

Chapter 9: Chapter Days that I wanted to prolong Dragon's Fang

Chapter Text

As summer drew to a close, autumn was just around the corner. Their wooden -ship- in the tree was ready to face the coming bad weather. They still needed to insulate the walls with animal fur, stock up on dried food, and maybe even make some jam if Makino had any left. They also needed to find warmer clothes.

Sabo had a plan that he shared with his brothers. The word -brothers- warmed his heart. He smiled as he remembered drinking sake to seal their bond. It was funny that Birdie drank with them too, awkwardly holding the cup in her claw and clinking it against theirs.

Ace had brought a bottle of sake he'd stolen from Dadan. Sabo and Luffy were surprised at first, but then they understood that Ace wanted to cement their bond in this simple way. They raised a toast, acknowledging each other as family. Though they were all very different, each had their own secrets and crazy families.

Ace was the son of the Pirate King, which thrilled Luffy but sent Sabo and Birdie into cultural shock. The bird only came to her senses after being doused with cold water. The blue flame on her body went out, and her feathers turned into a sticky mess. She then chased after a loudly laughing Ace, who had finally gotten his wish to get back at the bird.

Sabo was a prince of the Goa Kingdom, which shocked all three of them. Luffy quickly started jumping around, shouting that his brother was a runaway prince. Ace didn't really care; he just said that the blond boy should have brought some treasures from home.

Birdie remained a thoughtful enigma. The brothers had seen him a couple of times take on the form of a man with light, spiky hair, a round face, an unbuttoned purple shirt, blue pants, and sandals. On his chest was a large tattoo, but the boys couldn't make out its meaning. From his actions, it was clear he was a pirate who was just looking after them. But why he stayed with them was a mystery. Ace had grown closer to him, finding him to be a good sparring partner. Sabo often brought him books, having noticed he read a lot. Luffy remained himself, too oblivious to know or care.

It seemed their days would continue in this crazy rhythm. But more and more, Sabo noticed the sad look in Birdie's eyes. It was clear he would be leaving them soon. He had been in their company for too long. It made Sabo sad. That's why the blond boy was at the dump, looking for a gift. He wanted to find something that would serve as a reminder.

-Hey, should we finally go get the rich boy's son?- a rough male voice asked. This made the boy hide and listen carefully.

-Have you forgotten who he's with?- another voice hissed, filled with terror.

-I haven't forgotten,- the first replied nervously, -but he hasn't shown up in a while. And what does he care about the other one?- the man asked doubtfully. -Besides, the money we're being paid will help us escape if we need to.

-I agree, but you know, I don't want to mess with Red-Haired Shanks. You remember how he picked up that Blackbeard kid and threw him into the sea?- the second whispered.

-Of course,- the first answered, sounding crestfallen. -I can still hear the screams of those who died by his hands. He's like a bloody demon who came here with a punishment. I've never seen so much blood in my life.

-Exactly. And if we want to take the blond one, we either have to separate him or create an incident where we can kidnap him quietly,- the man said with a sigh. -In any case, we shouldn't act rashly.

The voices and the men's footsteps soon faded. The conversation filled Sabo with fear. He knew his father was trying to get him back, but he didn't think he would hire bandits to do it. And the rumor of the -bloody demon- was well known, but it seemed to be connected to Luffy. The boy had no doubt about this, as he had heard about Red-Haired Shanks from Luffy's stories. In Luffy's description, the man was kind, loud, and always teasing him, amused by Luffy's requests to join his pirate crew.

The truth must have been distorted. That's what rumors do, right? The sounds of screams echoed through the Gray Terminal, reaching every resident. And the energy, striking like lightning, punished everyone, warning them not to touch the -pirate's treasure- again.

The old tale of the pirate who accidentally sailed here is still whispered among the kingdom's residents. Even in the village, the whispers would quickly die down when the three of them appeared. Sometimes a strange, bloody darkness would flash in people's eyes, sending shivers down his spine. Maybe it was all true. Then why? Why does his head hurt so much just thinking about it? And his neck feels constricted, as if he's being choked. The choking feeling disappears only when he fully distracts himself. The truth itself, hidden under the -bloody curse,- is the price for trespassing.

-Sabo!- Luffy's loud voice rang out, and only then did the blond boy snap out of his strange trance. Something important, something he had clearly forgotten, seemed to have disappeared from his head. -What's that you have?- the boy asked, running over and looking with interest at the broken red glasses in his hand.

-Well, I thought you'd want to give Birdie a gift,- he said, handing the frame to him. -I noticed the bird squinting. Her eyesight is probably bad, and it would be nice to repay her for taking care of us.

-Ohhh!- the boy said, nodding happily. -You're so smart! I'm sure Birdie will love it!- After that, he hugged the blond boy tightly and ran off to the bird.

Sabo just sighed and shook his head. He wished so much that days like this would never end.

Chapter 10: Chapter days that I wanted to extend Phoenix

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

In a small room plunged into deep night, three loud snores echoed. They belonged to the boys, who were sleeping soundly, snuggled against the warm plumage of a blue bird. Marco, shielding them with his wing, gazed out the small window. He realized with a pang of sadness that he had to leave these rascals. He had ignored his duties as first mate for too long. He needed to return to his crew—or rather, to his huge, noisy family that he missed. To Pops, who needed looking after. To Thatch, who always loved to joke. To Izou, who brewed the best tea and always offered good advice.

That's what he was missing now. Advice about the feelings he had for these children. At first, his task was to figure out why Shanks had been here for so long. The Red-Haired pirate had quickly become a Yonko and had a power that had to be reckoned with. Yet he occupied little territory and spent most of his time at sea.

Marco even suspected that the pirate had a new territory in the East Blue. He didn't expect things to be this complicated. Sabo, a runaway prince. Ace, the son of the Pirate King. And on top of it all, Luffy—Garp's grandson and the one with the Straw Hat, a symbol that Shanks, and before him Roger, had worn. You could say the boy now had a crown on his head.

But the strangest thing was the energy that literally surrounded him and seeped deep under his skin, making any refusal a torment and the thought of leaving them an act of suffocation.

He was especially afraid of the thoughts that arose every time he was near him. This wasn't something that should be happening to him. He was Marco, the first mate and captain of Whitebeard's First Division. A phoenix who rose from the ashes and healed the wounds of his brothers. And now he wished to feel all the boy's attention on himself. Anything would do, as long as it was done by him.

This made him sick to his stomach. -I need to get out of here!- his mind screamed, and his body moved toward the exit of the wooden house. But...

-Birdie,- a quiet voice behind him said, pouring into his heart like honey. Marco turned and met the red eyes looking into his soul. -Hug me,- was the same command, in which he heard the will.

Then, taking on his human form, the man quickly obeyed. He gently hugged the small body, letting it settle between the two boys who were looking for their lost warmth.

“Stay one more day”the voice whispered, making his heart clench, and Marco sighed heavily.

-May the will of God be done,- he quietly answered the sleeping child.

-Just one more day,- Marco told himself, staying longer and longer, and something inside him broke. It was probably the phoenix in him screaming for him to drop everything and leave. But a promise cannot be broken.

This couldn't last forever, and one day, as the wind howled and the rain poured down, a cry rang out with the sound of thunder:

-You don't understand!- It was Ace. He was dirty, breathing heavily, and looking furiously at Luffy, who was lying on the ground. -You don't have the power to protect everything at once! Don't be like my father, who just gave up and let himself be killed! Because of him, I couldn't see my mother! Roger doesn't deserve your admiration!- he continued to furiously state his position.

-No!- Luffy exclaimed in denial, jumping up and pushing the freckled boy to the ground. -He accomplished a lot, and thanks to him you were born! His will still lives on!

-But not in me! I'm a dirty child!- the young man shouted, getting up and pushing the boy. -Many people died because of my blood, all to destroy his lineage! Even my mother!- sobbing, he pushed the black-eyed boy again.

-Don't be an idiot, he loved you and did everything for you to survive!- he argued, waving his arms.

-Is that why Garp took me? For protection? Or to eliminate a potential threat? Is that why he wants me to become a Marine?- he asked, lowering his head and clenching his fists.

-No, that's...- Luffy tried to find an argument.

-It was all to keep me under control, locked up. To take away my choice and freedom. That's what the Pirate King did for me,- he whispered quietly, turning away from the boy.

Luffy didn't know what to say to that, so he turned and ran from their shelter into the forest. Sabo rushed to catch him but lost sight of him. It was then that Marco, at his request, tried to find the child. The rain ended with the man flying off the island without looking back. Luffy had driven him away when he tried to bring the boy back. He had received a command to leave him alone and finally fly away. But before that, the pirate told Sabo that Luffy was fine and gave him a coin with the Whitebeard emblem.

“You'll need it someday, just keep it.”

As sad as it was, days ended, and new ones began, each bringing its own things.

Chapter 11: Chapter Days that wanted to prolong the Fire

Chapter Text

Ace ran blindly, consumed by a rage that burned like a fire in his chest. He clutched his shirt, as if trying to rip the emotions out. He couldn't hear Sabo's loud calls, which were muffled by the frantic pounding of his heart and the strikes of lightning.

The rain poured down, turning the ground to mud and then to a bog that threatened to swallow him whole.

Unconsciously, Ace found himself near Foosha Village. The villagers hurried to take cover, but froze when they saw him. They watched him walk past them and head to the pier. Many dark eyes followed him and stopped when he approached the raging ocean, which threatened to claim anyone who dared to get too close.

-He's angry...

-He's furious...

-Did they have a fight?

Whispers could be heard from behind the boy, who stood at the very edge of the pier. The water splashed over him, washing away the dirt and clinging to him, pulling him closer. His body hung over the edge of the turbulent water and was about to fall into its embrace.

- Ace !- a voice called from behind, and everything instantly went still. The downpour stopped, and the ocean became a peaceful calm.

The boy snapped out of his trance and turned to a voice that was familiar yet different. His throat instantly constricted, and he fell to his knees, his palms in the mud. His breathing became heavy from the lack of air, and his body trembled from the cold seeping into his heart.

- What are you doing? - the stranger asked him.

-I... I...- he tried to find the words, only now realizing that he had gotten lost in his own mind, consumed by emotion.

- Are you mad at me? - the person with white hair and red eyes tilted his head.

-No!- he immediately denied, raising his head and meeting the steady gaze. -I'm mad at myself!

- Why?

-Because I... I want to protect you from the fate that befell those who were connected to me,- Ace confessed, clenching his fists. It was the first time the boy had admitted his own fear.

- And you want to sacrifice yourself?

-Yes, if it will make your lives easier.

- You're an idiot, Ace, - another person came up to him and placed his palms on his face. - If you think your death is the solution to the problem, - warmth seeped under his skin with every word, and his head was pressed against a chest where he could hear the sound of drums.

-I... I...- Ace wanted to deny it, to push away, to yell. But the warmth drove out any resistance, overpowering him and putting him into a sweet stupor. His head felt heavy, and his eyes started to close.

After that, he opened his eyes and saw a clear sky. He felt the cool, post-rain grass and smelled sunflowers. He realized he was lying in the clearing they had found when they were looking for a place for their -ship.

Ace tried to get up, but something was holding him down. Turning his head to the right, he saw Luffy sleeping beside him. He looked so peaceful and tired. He must have... been very worried about their argument. Surprisingly, Sabo was lying on his left.

The blond boy wasn't sleeping; he was just there, watching the sky. Noticing that the freckled boy had woken up, he smiled faintly.

-You are worthy of love. Like all of us. We will give it to each other,- he whispered quietly with certainty, looking into his brown eyes. His hand squeezed Ace's, and then his gaze returned to the sky.

“But you're the devil's son”- an inner voice whispered to him. But it immediately fell silent, because Luffy woke up and looked at him with his onyx eyes.

-I still think you're stupid,- the child said, turning away from him and puffing out his cheeks.

-Then you'll have to get strong enough to beat it out of me,- Ace teased, finally understanding what he needed so badly.

-That's a promise!- the boy replied, standing up and looking around with a smile. -I'll get so strong that I'll beat everything out of you!- he announced loudly, raising his hands in the air.

-Yeah, go for it,- Ace approved, ignoring Sabo's grumbling.

The wind carried the promise away. It had already taken root in them, like many others before it. But now Ace knew what he wanted and would strive to get it. Even if it meant breaking their brotherly bond. Although, perhaps, they would become the foundation for him in his quest.

Chapter 12: Chapter It's worth forgetting for a moment

Chapter Text

A quiet campfire crackled in the night, its flames dancing in the cool autumn wind. An old pirate sat by the fire, thoughtfully smoking his pipe and watching a boy eat wild tiger meat. He hadn't expected to meet someone in his old age who so strongly resembled the Pirate King himself.

Fate was a strange thing, and it loved to play tricks on those who wanted to live a normal life after leaving the ocean. Anyone who entered its waters could no longer escape its destiny. It didn't matter what path they chose in the end, because the connection never disappeared; it became a chain pulling them into danger.

The man closed his eyes for a moment and exhaled a puff of smoke. Yes, with age he had become a pensive dreamer. But even so, he felt warmth and gratitude at the thought of meeting a future king. It would be interesting to guide the boy at the start of his journey.

-If you want to be the Pirate King, you should know a few things,- the old man said, lighting his pipe. -First, you need to gather a strong crew. They must unite around a single anchor. It can be anything, as long as they can listen to you as captain.

-Then it'll be a crew of dreamers!- Luffy exclaimed, laughing and raising his hands to the sky.

-Then the dreams must be stronger than yours,- the man chuckled, tapping the ashes into the fire.

They'll have to sacrifice them for something greater, he thought with a smile, watching the boy lively list the people he wanted on his crew.

-Next, the Pirate King had a power that could bring an opponent to their knees with a single glance.- After these words, a pair of red eyes stared at him, and he had to hit Luffy's head with his cane. -No, that's not what I meant!- the old man scolded.

-But they do listen to me,- Luffy grumbled, rubbing the bump on his head.

-And they're afraid. But fear is different for everyone, isn't it?- the man asked, putting fresh tobacco in his pipe. -That's why you need to learn to show your power in small doses. That's how it takes shape and grows. Your nakama must also become stronger, so they can be on your level.-

The boy no longer pouted, but listened carefully, looking at his palms. The old man just lit his pipe and let out a puff of smoke. Yes, this child had power, but it needed to be properly developed.

-Because if they rely on you too much, it'll lead them to their graves. Next, you need a powerful ship. That boat you're building, cutting down trees, won't do for the Grand Line.- The pirate took another puff. -And the last thing is charm. Although you have plenty of that.-

-What are you talking about, grandpa?- Luffy asked, tilting his head in confusion.

-Well, people are drawn to you,- the old man explained with a grin. -And with that, you'll either gain allies or enemies. I don't even rule out lovers,- the pirate laughed after the last word, slapping his knee.

-Lovers? Are those close friends? Like Shanks explained?- the boy asked, blinking in confusion.

-Shanks?- the pirate asked, slightly shocked. -You mean the Red-Haired Yonko with the scar on his face and a missing arm?

-Yeah. He's so cool! He has so many stories! And he gave me this hat as a promise!- the boy excitedly chirped, not noticing the shocked look on the old pirate's face.

-So you know a Yonko,- he muttered quietly, covering his face with his hands. -Alright, that's not what this is about right now. What exactly did he tell you about close friends?- the man asked, already feeling a cold sweat running down his back.

-Well, he said that only close friends can kiss each other. Or if someone loves someone a lot,- Luffy replied with a smile.

Okay, things aren't as bad as I thought, the pirate sighed in relief. He had been literally preparing to say goodbye to his soul.

-Although I'm supposed to feel a strange tingling in my stomach, and my heart should flutter. I didn't understand that until I met Ace and Birdie,- the boy laughed and swung his legs in excitement. -So I kissed them in secret. Because I'm still too young for that. Even though Shanks himself broke his own rule.

Nope, that's it, I'm saying goodbye to this world, the old man fell to his knees, and his spirit literally flew out of him.

-Hey, are you okay?- Luffy jumped up in concern, helping the man sit back up.

-Yes. Just, ahem, surprised,- he tried not to show how much this situation was bothering him. -Listen, kid. It's important to know: you must rely on your own inner feeling for this. You can't trust everything. Although for you, that's meaningless anyway. So, if you want the people you care about to stay with you, you have to capture their hearts.

-Capture?

-Yes, capture. Charm them. Make them a family that won't leave you,- he explained deceptively, hoping this wouldn't result in a strange story later on.

-Got it! Then I'll steal their hearts and eat them!- Luffy chirped happily, not realizing how this desire would affect the future.

Chapter 13: Chapter Flame of the Engulfed Forest

Notes:

the chapter didn't turn out very well. I'm not thrilled with it myself, but hey, I have something interesting in the next one.

Chapter Text

Snowflakes fell from the sky. In the forest, the sounds of an axe hitting a tree echoed. An old pirate sat by a felled stump, lighting his pipe. He watched as Luffy breathed heavily, trying to pull out a log.

-If you keep going at this pace, you'll build the boat next spring at the earliest,- the man said with a smirk, tapping the tobacco out of his pipe and refilling it.

-But I want to build the boat before winter ends!- Luffy argued, and the air around him instantly filled with a crackling energy.

-Cut it out,- the man scolded, throwing a snowball at the boy, which immediately diffused the tension. -I'm telling you again: you should use your body, not just your energy.

-But this is faster. And I'll finish the boat in time,- the boy argued, pouting.

-Sure. But then you'll only rely on it, and it won't develop. Your body isn't ready for its manifestation. You're just harming yourself,- the pirate explained with a sigh, lighting his pipe.

-That's stupid,- Luffy grumbled, starting to chop the tree again.

-Then drop the axe and go to your brothers,- he suggested, watching closely as the boy froze for a moment before continuing to strike. -You have a rubber ability; try using it with momentum,- the old man noted, tapping out the used tobacco.

Luffy listened to the advice, and the rest of the chopping went easier and faster. His face lit up with a smile, and the man nodded in satisfaction.

The days passed steadily. The boy made great progress and dealt with trees faster. The boat-building was also going well, though what he was creating didn't look like a floating vessel; it was more like a strange wooden structure.

It would have continued like this, but the old pirate tiredly looked at a cliff where two boys stood. They were clearly hostile towards him. Luffy, however, waved his hands happily when he saw them. Then, a more aggressive-looking boy flew at him. He literally clung to the child and shot angry glances at the old man.

The second, with blond hair, thanked him for taking care of their younger brother. It was then that the man realized the boys were brothers. The first, who looked a lot like a cat, was named Ace. The second, a polite gentleman, was Sabo. They looked at the strange wooden tub with doubt—they couldn't bring themselves to call it a boat—but chose to stay silent. Soon, the old man had more things to worry about.

On the bright side, it was easier to control Luffy's wild impulses. The boy became calmer and more serious, paying more attention to the man's tips and finding new uses for his rubber body. It seemed everything was going as it should. Spring was just around the corner. The snow was starting to melt, and green shoots were appearing from the ground. Animals were already boldly roaming the mountain, until the boys started to hunt. They skillfully took down dangerous predators.

But with the warmth, a group of bandits emerged from the shadows of the Gray Terminal. Fools who had accepted payment to capture the runaway prince. They walked among the trees and came to a clearing littered with stumps. This was surprising, as the trees here were known as -steel trees.- It would take a lot of strength to cut them down, and even tools could break against the bark. But maybe this was just what was left by the Red-Haired pirate. It was probably true. After all, the wood could be sold for a lot of money on the Grand Line, especially to shipwrights who made the strongest ships from it.

But right now, they were more interested in finding the right boy. Walking past the stumps, they heard children's voices. It was two boys arguing loudly. A blond boy was trying to break them up, and his description matched their target. All that was left was to be sure.

-Please, calm down!- the blond tried to reason with his brothers. -Maybe we can play a game to decide who will be captain?- he offered as a compromise, to which he received an angry growl.

-No!- they both shouted, butting heads again.

Sabo sighed heavily, knowing he couldn't reason with them. Each of them wanted to be captain, and neither was going to back down. So the argument always ended in a fight. After that, they would all end up on the ground, rolling in the mud. It turned into a tangled mess of limbs, laughing and trying to untangle themselves.

-Ace, stop pulling!- the blond grumbled.

-Luffy, you're poking me in the side with your elbow!- the freckled boy complained.

-Sabo, your foot is on my head!- Straw Hat whined.

The bandits heard their argument. After confirming that the blond boy in the blue clothes was their target, they moved boldly toward the group of children. The boys, sensing something was wrong, quickly scattered. They got up from the ground and ran toward the cliff, as the area was rocky and the descent was dangerous. This gave the boys time to get away from the bandits.

This went on for quite a while. At one point, everything fell silent and calm. This was because one of the Celestial Dragons had arrived in the kingdom. That's why they tried to be quieter. And the plan they had made would be just the thing to entertain such a distinguished gentleman. No one suspected what would happen in the next week.

Chapter 14: Chapter Bloody Tears

Notes:

I'm tired. School and part-time job. Ugh. But I'm glad I almost have the next chapter. This one is literally a sledgehammer. Lots of darkness.

Chapter Text

A bright orange light twisted in a fiery vortex, carried by the wind, scattering sparks farther and farther. The heat, which made the trees crackle, echoed across the island. Loud explosions, like the ringing of a bell, sounded a death knell, bringing despair to the local residents, who rushed to escape the scorching flames. They swiftly consumed the shadows, burning in cries of pain.

The Gray Terminal, where many lived, was dying along with its inhabitants who were caught in the flames. Tears of despair poured onto the ground, and quiet prayers weighed on the consciousness of a small child, causing blood to flow from his ears. But he paid no attention to it. He was worried about his two missing brothers. They had been separated by bandits. They had set a trap to split them up.

They managed to catch each of them with a net. Then, mockingly, they left Luffy hanging alone. He thrashed helplessly, trying to break free. He honestly tried to use his power, but something seemed to be blocking it. The cold of the net seeped into him, weakening his body and making his consciousness feel like it was sinking into water.

Darkness overtook his mind. His heart, which at first had been beating slowly in his chest, gave a loud thump. Then, speeding up into a drumbeat, it awakened an energy that struck like lightning. The net was torn to shreds, and the immediate surroundings were distorted. The standing trees turned to dust, the stones to sand, and the fire to waves, terrifying with their flames.

-Ace...- a voice boomed with a burst of will. Dispelling the acrid smoke, he tore away the Moon. It shone with bright rays, illuminating the standing child. His scarlet eyes looked at it. His white hair flared in a furious vortex, and his body was high above the burning island.

-Sabo...- he whispered, almost hysterically twitching and looking around. The whispers of voices weighing on him, the cries of pain that made it hard to focus, the crunch of bones, and the smell of roasted meat that smelled like rotten dog mash were so irritating.

His head darted from side to side in despair, trying to focus. But his fingers were clenching his snow-white hair harder and harder, and the roots were stained with red. Blood from his eyes, ears, and nose was a hindrance. And his head hurt more and more, and his body was pierced with pain, as if needles were going under his skin to his very bones, scratching them, making a creaking sound.

-Marco... MARCO... Marco!

The man on board the Moby Dick suddenly looked up at the night sky. The Whitebeard crew was celebrating nearby, and the captain himself was relaxing and drinking sake. They were celebrating a successful treasure hunt, so there was nothing to worry about. But the first mate felt a growing call and the blue flame that engulfed him with alarm.

-Marco!- everyone exclaimed anxiously, because a strange sight appeared before them.

The blue phoenix bird looked different. A red glow, similar to a familiar haki, was woven into it. Its size was also different, making it much larger than usual. The look was especially frightening. It was so sharp, as if it was penetrating the very soul, making everyone more anxious. Whitebeard wanted to stop his son. But the words didn't even have time to be spoken before he disappeared into a mixed flame, leaving everyone in a panic. They had never seen anything like it. They couldn't even understand where the first commander had gone.

Marco found himself in a seemingly familiar place. But everything was engulfed in flames, and in front of him stood Luffy, who was clearly holding on with his last ounce of strength. His entire face was covered in blood, flowing from all facial organs. This brought terror to his mind, which screamed, -Start healing immediately!- But the brightly shining eyes restrained him.

-Find... FIND... FIND!- the child demanded hysterically, clinging to him out of stubbornness. -FIND ACE AND SABO!- the command, filled with pleading and fear, finally made him understand what had happened.

It took all of the man's willpower not to immediately rush to fulfill the child's command. First, he carefully picked up the unconscious boy, and then he focused all his observation haki on finding the two boys.

Sabo was found quite quickly. The child was relatively safe, if you didn't count the fact that he was in a locked room with bars on the windows, and the blond himself was tied to the bed, and something was being injected into him through an IV. That would have to be dealt with later.

Ace, on the other hand, was in a much worse situation. No, he was in a hell that should never be intended for a simple child. It looked little like a room. It was more like a torture chamber, where he was tied to a post. Whip marks were visible on the boy's back. It was not a pleasant sight, but it was not the end. The bandit was clearly tired of his silence and decided to go completely insane.

So Marco rushed to where the young man was. Unthinking, he used his flame to teleport to the same room. He kicked the bandit, clearly breaking his jaw, as all his power was directed at the bastard's nasty face. The blond immediately applied his blue flame to heal the wounds. He wanted to kill this nasty man, but he had to rush to another one.

Just as he was about to take Ace, he heard a loud crunching of bones, which made him freeze and pay attention to what was happening. Luffy. He shouldn't be conscious. He had lost too much blood, and had clearly exhausted the body's capabilities. This child should be with him right now. Hugging his brother and letting him handle everything.

But the crunching of bones continued. And it seemed he was about to throw up from the sound. When everything fell silent, he turned around. Luffy stood over the barely breathing man's body. The boy looked at him with rage, but seeing his distorted face, full of pain and madness, he turned away. Then he walked up to Marco.

-Sabo,- the voice said quietly, making him sigh with relief.

The pirate calmly took his hand, and then, along with Ace, he moved to where the third one was. The young man was unconscious and in a rather sad state. It was lucky that the drug had not completely entered him, because the consequences would have been a complete loss of personality. That's why this drug was considered forbidden. Well, Marco would have a chance to deal with that a little later. For now, the main thing was to move them to the Moby Dick without causing even more noise. The children needed peace, and with his crew and these events, that was impossible.

Chapter 15: Chapter Noise on Whitebeard's Ship

Notes:

Thanks to all for the trimming. I want to do something special. I hope I have the strength to do it.

Chapter Text

Marco was barely standing, clinging to consciousness with his last reserves of strength. He had to sustain his phoenix flames, which enveloped the three children lying in one bed. And he also had to fend off the overly curious Whitebeard pirates who were constantly trying to get into the medical bay. Even Pops tried to talk to him, but the man simply didn't have the strength or the desire to explain anything, simply because he himself didn't fully understand what was happening.

He had to insistently ask everyone not to bother him for a while. The moment he closed his eyes, he almost fell asleep. But each time he started, he would apply the blue flames to the boys again and check on their condition. Each one was literally hanging by a thread. Luffy could lose his sight and hearing. Ace might have an infection, as his body temperature was too high and his breathing was heavier than usual. Things were also complicated with Sabo. Honestly, at first, it seemed to him that the medicine being infused into him was just clouding his mind. And that was a mistake. He should have looked more carefully at what was flowing through the IV. But at that moment, the pirate had other concerns. So he had to hope for luck, hoping the boy would regain consciousness.

This continued for a long time. Soon, Marco decided to leave the cabin and find something to eat, because he felt his stomach twisting into a tight knot and his head spinning. And he looked like Pops after he had been seriously ill.

Thatch, seeing his friend who looked like a zombie, rushed to feed him a hearty soup. He hoped to give the nurses time to examine the three new passengers the first mate had brought. Maybe he would even manage to ask his friend what was going on.

-You look like a dead chicken,- the man began, chuckling slightly. -You need to rest. No, you have to get some sleep, and your guests will be looked after.

-No,- Marco immediately tensed, clenching the spoon in his hands. -I'll handle it myself.

-Don't be stubborn. We're a family, and every one of us is worried about you. So please, let us do this for you,- he tried to reason with his friend, cautiously watching him hesitate. -You need rest. So just sleep.- He cajoled, watching the first mate's movements slow down.

-But... I have to take care of them. And Luffy...- Marco couldn't finish the last words, as his sleepy body was scooped up by Thatch.

-I'm sorry, but that's an order from the captain. I know you won't like it, so you can chew me out when you're back in full health,- the man apologized quietly, carrying the first commander to his cabin and laying him down. -Nothing will happen in that time. Sleep soundly.

There are many proverbs in folklore. One of them clearly describes the whole situation: -Don't speak your wishes aloud, or they won't come true.- It seems to apply more to blowing out candles, but let's apply it to this moment.

Luffy woke up, in a complete panic and with a headache. There was also a burning sensation in his eyes, ears, and throat, which turned his voice into a hoarse hiss directed at the nurses who were changing the children's bandages.

So now they were standing against the wall, warily watching the hostile boy. The girls tried to let him know they were there to help.

Thatch, hearing the commotion, rushed over. He found a scene where one of the boys was growling hostilely, and several unconscious crew members were lying nearby. A couple of men and women; the rest were standing outside the range of the Haki. Well, that was a surprise for them, especially that many of the tough guys were also lying on the floor. Having no other choice, the pirate turned to the captain.

-Boy, what is this rude behavior?- Whitebeard scolded with a chuckle, receiving the wave of Haki. -You're only harming yourself that way, son. Rest, kid,- the old man said with a smirk, aiming Haki at him. After which the boy immediately fell back into a deep sleep. -That's how you deal with wild children. But I'm surprised this little one woke up so quickly. It seemed he would sleep for at least two days,- he approached him, studying him with interest. -Oh, so that's where Red-Haired Fox's hat went,- the pirate remarked with a smirk. -Alright, be careful with them. We wouldn't want our ship to sink.

Chapter 16: Chapter Noise on Whitebeard's Ship

Chapter Text

Whitebeard was torn from his thoughts by a loud stomping. Thatch burst out of the hold, throwing the door open. He was laughing loudly, running away from the straw-hatted boy who had just emerged after him. Stars were shining in his grandson's eyes.

-Tubo-hair!- the child yelled, chasing after him.

-Luffy!- the freckled one yelled, rushing out after them.

After that, the whole horde ran among the pirates, not noticing how they were knocking everyone down in their path. Because of this, a couple of pirates ended up overboard in the depths of the ocean. This strange situation would have continued, but Izou stood in Thatch's way.

-Oh, dear!- the man exclaimed, watching the fourth commander's face grow darker and darker.

-Would you mind explaining where my clothes went?- the pirate asked, smiling like a devil.

-Uh... well, you see...- Thatch tried to find a coherent explanation and even cast a pleading look toward the children. But they tactfully hid behind Whitebeard's chair.

-Well?- the man asked with intensity, pulling out his pistol and loading it with salt.

-Where are my clothes?!- a familiar voice boomed. It was Marco, who had only recently woken up from his long sleep. He immediately wanted to go and check on the children, but all of his clothes had disappeared. In their place was Izou's kimono, which he had to put on, rushing out of his cabin.

-Marco!- the pirates cried out happily. Many of them even shed tears. They were so happy to see the first mate awake.

-What happened here?- he asked in confusion, at a loss.

-Birdie!- Luffy exclaimed joyfully, crashing into the man.

-You're finally awake, chicken,- Ace's relieved voice was heard.

-Luffy?! Ace?! What are you... No, you should be resting and healing!- he immediately scolded them.

-It was boring in there, and the tubo-haired uncle brought yummy food. So I decided to be friends with him. And he was really funny, because it was his idea to steal all your clothes,- Luffy said, giggling, not even seeing Izou hit Thatch over the head.

-Thatch!- the first mate roared menacingly, flaring up with blue flames and wrapping them around the children. -I'll deal with you later. For now, let me examine you,- the blonde threatened his friend, which sent a shiver down his spine. But he was a little happy. Finally, the first commander and an important member of the crew was awake, even if it meant revenge from him.

Marco picked Luffy up. He was happily chattering and hugging him. But the man immediately understood that the boy was too tense right now, and all this cheerful behavior was hiding his true emotions. He looked at Ace, who was clutching his yukata but not looking at the pirate. Apparently, the boy understood that he could only trust Marco in this situation.

-Pops, I know I owe you a report, but for now I want to take care of the children. It won't take long,- Marco assured, to which he received an affirmative nod.

So, with Ace's permission, the pirate also picked him up, and they all entered the medical bay together. After settling them on the bunk next to Sabo, he began to examine them. Ace's recovery was in full swing. He was glad that the other medics had managed to apply the ointment to his scars. It was even interesting to wonder how many nerve cells that had cost them. As for Luffy, it was especially interesting. The boy had literally no hint of the injuries he had sustained. Which, of course, was a good thing, but also puzzling. Was it because of his Devil Fruit or simply because he was from the Monkey family?

Only Sabo remained. Assessing this child's condition took more time. Although he had not sustained any injuries, he had been given an injection because of which he was now sleeping. It was pure luck that they had been able to find out what was in the injection. Developing an antidote would take a long time. Which was not good. He needed to get him out of this state. There was a way, of course. But because of it, the effect of that medicine might be distorted. However, he did not have the right to make that decision. But there was no other option. So he placed his palm on his chest and sent his Haki toward one goal: awakening.

Chapter 17: chapter: memory loss

Summary:

Four days isn't good. Two used to be enough for me. Then it went to three. I don't want to take such breaks anymore. I hope to go back to two days, but I don't know.

Chapter Text

-So, Marco, I'm waiting for an explanation. A very detailed one,- Whitebeard said insistently, sitting in his chair and staring intently at his first mate.

On the deck, there was complete chaos. Many pirates were knocked out, and those who weren't were running around, trying to extinguish the raging fires and keep the ship from sinking. There were numerous cracks through which water was leaking. It was immediately bailed out and poured overboard. The carpenters were completely at a loss, as their help was needed everywhere: they had to patch the holes and keep the mast from breaking, even fix the sails, which now looked like rags.

-Sabo...- a tearful voice from Luffy was heard, which sent another wave of Haki through the air. The already damaged boat shook indignantly, and the base of the mast tilted, starting to fall.

-Watch out!- the pirates' voices cried out, rushing to get out of the way.

After that, the bulk of the impact hit the starboard side, and the just-patched holes reopened.

-Get the buckets!

-Damn it, we need a shovel!

-Has anyone seen the nails?!

Marco just winced and awkwardly hid his gaze, trying to blend in with his surroundings. Although in reality, he wanted to comfort the boy and assure him that he would definitely find a cure for Sabo.

-Quiet, little one,- Whitebeard said gently, holding the child in his palm and stroking his white hair. -He'll be alright. Won't he, Marco?-

The commander of the first division could only nod in agreement. It seemed like everything should have gone well. Although, now that he thought about it, he himself was to blame for the chaos on the ship. Yes, he should have developed a cure instead of waking the fair-haired boy from his sleep. Yes, it had worked, but...

Sabo woke up and looked generally fine. But the next words he said were a thunderclap in the silence.

-Who are you?- he asked, looking around in confusion and fear. -And where am I?-

-Sabo!- the two boys exclaimed, rushing to hug him and ignoring the boy's bewilderment and wide eyes of shock.

Marco literally felt a cold sweat run down his back. His fear had come true: the boy had lost his memory. The reaction of his two brothers could only make the situation worse. Could he hope the ship wouldn't sink? He hadn't jinxed it, had he? Ha ha... Maybe he should pray to someone? Although the embodiment of the sun seemed to be right in front of him. Should he start giving orders and warn Pops? It seems a hurricane is unavoidable. Maybe they could get through it all without losses? Oh, why did he end up on that island? Why did Red-Haired literally crown the boy? Why did his heart skip a beat at the sight of Luffy? And why did the Phoenix start preening in front of the kid? What cat crossed his path to make him so unlucky? What did the man do to deserve all this?

-What do you mean you don't remember?!- a voice filled with Haki rang out. It made Marco jump and rush to grab Luffy.

-Ace, I'm taking him to the deck. There won't be as much destruction there. You take care of Sabo for now. And I beg you, the memory loss is temporary!- the man quickly explained, carrying the small embodiment of chaos out of the cabin.

But that didn't stop the child's tantrum, who was literally screaming across the entire ocean. It even seemed like it could be heard in Mariejois. No, thank you, the Whitebeard pirates would probably refuse that kind of interest. However, a strange, familiar feeling still arose. Did the red-haired Shanks notice something? Should he start worrying? Or was Marco slowly going insane?

-So, Marco, I'm waiting for your explanation,- Whitebeard pressed, stroking a tired Luffy, who had fallen asleep and stopped causing damage.

-Well... I flew to an island in the East Blue where Shanks was often seen, but as I was approaching the supposed location, I noticed three boys in the water,- the first mate began his long story.

He told them about his meeting with the children, how he had taken care of them, how he had watched over them, and how he had found a small but cozy family in them.

At the mention of family, Whitebeard just smirked and shook his head. He said that Marco should have told him about it from the beginning instead of hiding it. Although the old Yonko understood the reason, he still didn't approve of the decision.

-I could have met my grandson even earlier. Although now I have even more of them,- he declared with a smile, looking at the boy in his palm.

-Wait... Crocodile has a child?!- all the pirates exclaimed, jumping to their feet. And even those who were knocked out stood up.

-Bha-ha-ha! That little ball of fluff carries my blood!- he declared proudly, leaving everyone stunned. It seems their souls will no longer find peace in this world. Yes, let's pray for the Whitebeard crew.

And at that moment, the infamous Crocodile sneezed.

-Are you feeling sick, Crocodile?- Doflamingo asked with concern, pouring tea.

-I'm just allergic to you,- the Shichibukai dismissed and scratched behind his ear slightly. It seemed he was missing something. It was on his mind, but if it didn't come to him, it wasn't that important.

Chapter 18: Chapter Crazy Bloodline

Notes:

I'm feeling sick. And my nerves haven't been the best lately either. But I'm glad it was a fun chapter. Long live Crocodile, the son of Belous. Why? Just for fun.

Chapter Text

Everyone sitting on the deck was in a sullen state. Their captain's announcement had made too strong an impression on them. The only child the old men knew had produced offspring. And so chaotic that it made everyone give up alcohol for a week. They needed to process all this while sober. So they comforted their cursed souls only with cigarettes. Though Thatch, for example, had locked himself in the kitchen and was cooking non-stop. Izou was polishing his revolvers, and Marco... Well, he was stuck with the paper reports of the damage. Although, it seemed he couldn't concentrate. He came out of his cabin again, all frazzled and nervous. He was most likely going to check on the children and Pops. He should have chewed them all out for not cleaning up the mess, but apparently, being in the same daze, he simply ignored them.

The chaotic ship was in urgent need of repair. The main mast had broken and fallen onto the starboard side, causing the vessel to list.

While inspecting the damage, Marco went into the kitchen where Thatch was. His friend was nervously tapping his foot, accepting Izou's embrace. The fourth division commander was soothingly stroking his hair. Usually, these two didn't show affection so openly. Perhaps what had happened would finally allow their relationship to progress.

With a gentle knock, the first mate drew the attention of the loving couple. They didn't jump apart as usual, but just looked at him wearily, then went back to their own world.

-I'll take the food you made. I'm sure Luffy is very hungry right now. It's best to satisfy the gluttonous little one's appetite before he decides to eat the ship,- Marco joked awkwardly, loading a trolley with food.

-Mmhmm,- Thatch grumbled, squeezing Izou in his arms.

The Phoenix awkwardly looked away. Yes, everyone knew about their relationship, but it was unusual to see them openly care for each other. As the man approached the captain's cabin, he heard a commotion inside.

-Let me go!- Luffy was ordering for the umpteenth time that day.

-Hmph,- Whitebeard's grunt was an emphatic no. Apparently, he had already gotten used to his grandson's whims.

Grandson. The word made Marco tense up. Something inside him sprouted feathers of wariness. Especially the fact that Crocodile had a child. It was surprising. Very much so. Such a strange event. Not what you'd expect from a stickler for order. It was also confusing that he was related to Garp's son. He still had to tell Whitebeard that. Perhaps the captain wouldn't immediately contact the Marine. Although, Newgate would most likely want to know more about his son's chosen one.

The first mate politely knocked and, with permission, entered the captain's cabin. The old man was lying on his bed, half-asleep. Luffy was on his chest, all puffed up and grumpy. It was surprising that the child wasn't trying to run away. But when he saw the food trolley, he quickly rushed to it and started shoving food into himself.

-Luffy, don't rush,- Marco watched the boy with a smirk, not letting him stuff everything in at once.

Whitebeard watched them with interest. A strange thought came to his mind. It was certainly odd, but maybe it would be more interesting, and a lot funnier.

-Listen, Marco, maybe you should marry my grandson?- This question left Marco in a state of shock, instantly turning him into a phoenix.

-What the hell, Pops?- the first mate asked, bewildered, closing his eyes as Luffy, with a cry of -Birdie!-, hugged him and pressed him close.

-Well, I'd like to see you as my son-in-law.

-Not a very good joke,- he grumbled through the body of the boy, who was pressing the bird's head to his chest.

-Oh, I'm not kidding,- Whitebeard said with all seriousness. -We'll just put a ring on you. And the boy is already the embodiment of chaos; with age, he'll only become... hmm, how to say it better... more like Roger,- the old man said with a smirk and a hint of nostalgia.

-Then you should know that it's not just his connection to Ace that makes him more like him, but Garp as well.-

-What do you mean?

-Monkey D. Luffy,- Marco said, watching as Pops raised his eyebrows in surprise, then looked thoughtfully at the ceiling.

-Apparently, only someone with the Monkey name could interest my son. I wonder if Garp himself knows about this? Probably not. His offspring is like mine. Both are hidden manipulators and lovers of keeping everything secret. I won't tell him then, but it's worth letting him know that the children are on my ship. How quickly do you think a Marine ship will appear on the horizon?- Whitebeard mused with a smirk, watching the bird droop in his grandson's embrace.

-Oh no, first we have to repair the 'Moby Dick',- the first mate argued. He knew that the captain now had more leverage over the poor commander of the first division.

-Yes, well pointed out. It's not proper to meet the future family in ruins. We need to prepare everything for the wedding ceremony.-

-Captain, please, drop it,- Marco begged, trying to reason with the old man.

-Oh, it's going to be the most magnificent event. Although, the press shouldn't know about it. So everything will happen right out at sea. Oh, how wonderful. You'll become my new official son,- the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates described his plan, letting any of his right-hand man's arguments go in one ear and out the other.

Let's pray for Marco. I wonder how Garp will react to this? Although, he probably won't even be able to attend all the commotion. And somewhere, the well-known Mihawk is bored. And he's a bored guy. So we should just keep watching, hoping that everything will return to normal. Although how is that even possible? Especially with Luffy?

Chapter Text

Aboard a small wooden raft, sitting in a chair, drifted Mihawk. He was returning from a Shichibukai meeting, which initially proceeded like a usual gathering but ended with a battle between its two loudest participants. Honestly, the man didn't understand why he was even there.

Most of his thoughtfulness, however, was related to Shanks. Perhaps he had hoped to find out information or a rumor about how the pirate lost his arm. That question did indeed surface, but he learned nothing new. Only a couple of sentences were uttered, and even Crocodile asked Mihawk if he was the reason for the Red-Haired Yonko's missing arm.

Of course, it wasn't the swordsman. He himself was curious who had managed it. He should meet with his old acquaintance. It was a shame that everything would be different now. Sparring with swords was now simply pointless. There was no one left to compete with for the fun that gave meaning to the man's life.

So now he was steering his raft in the direction pointed out by the Vivre Card. The slightly charred tip reminded him of the most unpleasant moment when the paper suddenly burst into flames, signaling a threat to a life. At that moment, Mihawk didn't even realize it. He was on a typical pirate hunt. Only when the man dragged the captive to the Marines did he feel a disturbing sensation. The paper appeared small and burning before him. Because of it, Haki involuntarily erupted, and a couple of nearby foot soldiers fainted. The swordsman then rushed back to his castle, where he called Ben. The first mate then informed him that Shanks had lost an arm and that his life was not in danger. To the remaining questions about how it happened, there was silence and the den-den mushi was hung up.

Of course, that angered him. But even when he managed to contact Red-Hair later, the latter wasn't particularly willing to elaborate and only mentioned “betting on the new era.” His old friend's voice was indifferent, mixed with something strange that caused alarm. It seemed as if Shanks was possessed. The word -bet- had made such a strong impression.

When Mihawk tried to find out more from Benn, the man asked him not to worry about it too much. Moreover, he asked him not to show up near them for some time. That was the strangest thing in the situation. Usually, the Red-Haired first mate didn't sound so dejected. Although his tone was more like desperate fatigue.

Suddenly, his thoughts were interrupted by a Haki of Observation premonition. Opening his eyes, he looked more closely into the distance of the sea. What he saw made his eyebrows rise in surprise.

In the distance was the Moby Dick. Or rather, what was left of it. The swordsman had never seen such a mighty ship in such a state. If at first, it seemed like they had simply emerged from a battle (though who in their right mind would fight them?), then he noticed a group of pirates subduing the ship and fixing it. Perhaps another drunken revelry, though it didn't quite look like it.

Out of curiosity, the swordsman steered his raft towards the ship. As he got closer, he noticed Izou.

-Oh, you're just in time, Greatest Swordsman,- the pirate smiled in a way that made Mihawk wince.

And so, the man found himself next to Marco. There was a half-drunk mug of beer in his hand, and the phoenix was openly sobbing. On the other side, on the railing, sat a small boy. In a damned straw hat and the most ridiculous wedding outfit he had ever seen. Honestly, he had never been dragged into such a predicament before. The swordsman expected everything but to become the victim of an engagement. This only intensified his desire to get drunk, and the man poured another mug of alcohol into himself.

-Congratulations, brother-in-law,- came the cheerful voice of Thatch, who boldly clapped the swordsman on the shoulder.

-Yes, it went even better than I thought,- came the voice of Izou, who appeared next to the cook.

-Yeah, I'm surprised that little gremlin has any concept of a wedding,- the fourteenth division commander agreed with a smirk and a satisfied nod.

-Yes, to hold still for so long... I'm proud of you, young King,- the fourth commander agreed with respect.

-Oh, I already had one.

The music suddenly stopped. The entire noisy company instantly turned their gaze towards them. Even Whitebeard stopped celebrating and was now looking at the boy, to whom two more rascals rushed up. Mihawk simply ignored it, taking a sip of the amber liquid.

-With whom?- Ace asked in surprise, looking more hostile. Although for the entire day of this noisy celebration, the youth had been frowning and chasing Marco, wanting to throw him overboard, in which the fair-haired boy assisted him, albeit more reservedly.

-With Shanks!- Luffy announced brightly.

This caused many pirates to faint, and the swordsman spit out all his alcohol. Nearby, the crying Marco just leaned his head over the side of the ship and wailed:

-Oh, sea, why me?!

He wondered what they had gotten Marco to drink to put the first mate in such an inadequate state. Although, maybe everyone ate or drank something wrong, since they were all having this auditory hallucination. Look, everyone's head started aching. Ah, no, that was just Whitebeard's Conqueror's Haki.

-I will kill that red-haired bastard,- he threatened, squeezing the glass in his hand, causing it to shatter and fly into shards.

The ship, whose holes had just been patched, once again felt the wrath. Only this time, it was the captain, who was threatening to drag Shanks out from under the earth.

Mihawk stared blankly into the distance. Marco was crying on his shoulder, and Luffy was laughing nearby. The little devil was having fun, unaware of how much he was affecting the world. So much chaos in one person. Hmm... It would be interesting to train the swordsman who would pledge allegiance to this boy. Somehow, the man was sure of it. Although, one doesn't have to look far for an example, as the former Pirate King's first mate was also a swordsman. I wonder what kind of madman this one will have?

Notes:

Minus Marco's nerves and minus Mihawk. He's just bored, and here's such fun.

Chapter Text

A agonizing headache heavily pressed upon the sleepy consciousness of the newly awakened first mate. His whole body ached because he had slept on the ship's deck, and next to him, pressed against his side, Luffy snored.

-I see you've come to,- a painfully familiar voice said. Turning around, he saw Mihawk standing in the early sunlight. -Honestly, though, I expected you to sleep until evening after the swill they poured into you.-

The fair-haired man gently moved Luffy closer to Ace, who immediately hugged the boy and pulled him close. It took all of Marco's strength to stand up on his shaky legs.

-What the hell happened anyway?- Marco asked in a hoarse voice, putting a hand to his aching throat with displeasure.

-Looks like you got amnesia,- the swordsman said with a smirk, not really looking in his direction. -Well, yesterday was a party for your engagement to Luffy,- he said calmly.

-Wait... what?!- the Whitebeard first mate croaked.

-Yep, you whined on my shoulder the whole party. My cloak got ruined because of it,- the swordsman nodded at the stained garment hanging next to him on the railing.

-What the actual hell?!- Marco tried to ask more, but the hellish pain in his throat prevented him. And the swimming world made him lean over the railing, which caused him to vomit.

-Hmm... Your system handles alcohol a bit weakly. Though you drank like a prisoner before execution,- Mihawk turned his head away in disgust.

-Mgh,- the blonde only gave him a weary look, after which nausea overwhelmed him again.

-So, congratulations to you. But you should wait for the boy to grow up before marrying him. Although you'll have quite a bit of competition, considering Shanks and that boy with the freckles. And winning his attention is quite difficult. It'll be harder as he gets older. Good luck,- Mihawk gave Marco an encouraging pat on the shoulder.

Marco glared fiercely at the swordsman, then weakened and slumped onto the cool deck. His head was splitting from the flashes of memory. Honestly, he was simply horrified. What bastards his crew were! Especially Whitebeard. The captain himself had conducted the wedding ceremony.

The Moby Dick had been decorated with paper lanterns. Tables laden with various dishes that a tired Thatch had nervously prepared were set up in the clear space, devoid of debris and with the mast down. (Though screw him. That Thatch, along with Izou, had given him tea that had something mixed in, which made Marco spend the entire party in an altered state.)

So, the ceremony itself took place near the bow of the ship. Everyone participated in building the mini-altar, which was still standing there, but the man intended to throw it into the ocean. Next, Marco himself. Well, no one dared to change his clothes, so they left him in his usual outfit, except he wore a white shirt. Next, Luffy. Oh, thank goodness they failed to dress the child in a dress or a kimono. Although the Pirate King's attire wasn't much better: a mini-red doublet with a black hat decorated with Phoenix feathers. (Where the hell did they get them?)

Ceremonial music played, to which Mihawk himself escorted the boy and gave his blessing (What the hell?!). Ace shouted that he disagreed with the marriage. Sabo was also against it. In general, the two boys tried to protect their brother. Although the freckled one did so because he himself had a liking for Luffy, but it was just childish for now. It was a shame that didn't work for the first mate. It seemed he himself was against it. But no one took his objection into account.

Because of this, they exchanged rings. Or something similar. Specifically, Marco gave up one of his feathers because of Luffy's whim. The boy then kissed him on the cheek and fashioned a ring out of a small straw (which he pulled from his hat).

After that, the memories drifted away. Because at that point, the phoenix was pouring alcohol into himself by the liter.

-Marco,- Ace's sleepy voice was heard. He came over, rubbing his eyes.

-M?

-I'll challenge you one day, and then I'll take Luffy from you,- the boy simply said, looking at him with all seriousness. -I wish it could be that way. But unfortunately, I can't control his chaos alone, so it'll be good if the three of us can control it. But I still don't like that he won't belong to me. So don't think the fight for his interest will die down. If anything, I have more motivation to get stronger,- the boy said with a smirk, and after patting Marco on the shoulder, he wanted to go back to Luffy. -Oh, right, he's looking for you, so let's go.-

Marco just sighed as he was taken by the hand and led back to the children lying on the deck. He sat down in the spot where he had just been sleeping. Luffy immediately snuggled up to him, and Ace lay down next to him, already hugging the child. Honestly, the phoenix didn't know what to do. How should he feel about all this? No, the man didn't even consider a romantic interest in the captain's grandson. For many reasons. Maybe he should just ignore it? Yes, that's what he should do.

Notes:

I added a couple of tags and updated the chapters a bit, more precisely, I added the title. Yeah, I'm in a good mood and there's a lot of humor here. I'm glad everything is going smoothly and in order. There is no information about whether Shanks and Luffy had a wedding. But there was a wedding like Marco's That is, there was a ceremony, but it didn’t work out.But that also doesn't mean Shanks would miss the opportunity. He gave him a ring, that was at the beginningI'm thinking of adding the ring part to the story in the future.

Chapter Text

The Moby Dick was beached on one of the islands. All the ship's pirates, save for a couple of characters, were restoring it. Whitebeard watched as Mihawk trained the three rascals. Marco was busy with paper damage reports and overseeing the resupply. Izou was helping him, for which the first mate was very grateful to the fourth commander. Thatch carried a stack of plates filled with food.

-So, what's the story with Shanks?- the man asked, setting the plates on the beach blanket.

This question drew everyone's attention. And mental curses, too. Honestly, the Whitebeard pirates didn't want to delve deeper into this drama. That's why everyone hastened to get away from it as fast as possible. Newgate, however, tilted his head with interest. He was keen to know about it, and he wanted to know more about his grandson. That's why he stopped Marco, who wanted to make himself scarce.

-Hmmm,- Luffy chewed his meat thoughtfully, tilting his head skyward.

Shanks' memories. Let's imagine we flash back to the moment of the chapter -Benn's Grey Hair.- That time when Uta, unfortunately, was left by the Red-Hair crew on the Island of Elegia because of the -Tot Musica- incident. When they returned without the girl, their faces expressed the deepest regret. They had to leave the girl, hoping she could heal herself. Was it the right decision? That had been the original plan, though. But because of this incident, the country ceased to exist, which became an empty home for her. Was Shanks to blame for this? To some extent, yes. But did he feel guilt? Perhaps. Though, more likely, deep down, an ugly entity, full of bloody ties, was raising its head and happily wagging its tail, rejoicing in the undivided attention from the little Sun.

He saw Luffy crying and hitting him, wanting to know where Uta was. But everyone remained silent and looked at the child with gloomy eyes. Even Benn turned away from the sunflower.

Because of this, the boy screamed at them, calling them traitors, and rushed to Makino's bar. There, seeking comfort, he hugged the girl, who tried to console the little one. Shanks, entering right after, appeared behind him and placed his hand on the top of his head.

-She just decided to fulfill her dream,- he lied, smiling his usual smile. -She said she would wait for you to become strong and visit her.- That was also a lie, pouring out like a promise directed more at him than at his adopted daughter.

-Then take me into your crew!- he exclaimed insistently, not noticing Benn, who had just entered, quickly placing a hand on the captain's shoulder.

-Sorry, but no,- the man strictly refused, squeezing Shanks' shoulder. -Makino, pour us a drink,- he requested, insistently seating the Red-Hair at the bar. His gaze showed fatigue and wariness. It seemed the first mate was ready to pounce and drag the headstrong captain away at any moment.

-I asked Shanks!- Luffy objected, climbing onto the pirate's lap.

Everything seemed to freeze for a moment. An energy of tension hung in the air. It seemed he should agree. After all, that would make him the complete possessor of the Sun. It seemed it would happen, but something constricted his neck. The bloody vow he had sworn before witnesses now clutched his very essence with chains, preventing him from uttering the cherished words. A loud clang of a bell sounded. It was the wall clock. The hour hand pointed to four in the afternoon. It seemed like just time. But it was a sign. Seven months. That's how long he had before finally returning to the New World. A reminder from the vow? Most likely. After all, there was still so much left before he would draw attention to himself.

-Yes, Luffy, you can't come with us,- Shanks whispered through the pain in his throat.

-Traitor!- he cried out angrily, jumping off his lap and sitting sulkily on the bar stool nearby.

These words wounded the Red-Hair's heart. He wanted to reach out and put the child back in his place. But he was stopped by Benn, who considerately pushed a mug of rum toward him. Looking at the glass in his hand, Shanks gripped the handle tighter and tighter, causing it to crack and make quiet, grinding noises. It seemed he would break at any moment and rush to assure Luffy that he would definitely take him on the ship and travel with him.

-Captain, the package you were waiting for is finally here,- Lucky Roux announced, entering with a box in his hands. The rest of the crew were also holding boxes. They carried them into the bar and placed them in the middle of the room.

-Oh!- Shanks smiled happily and stood up to go and open one of them. Inside were the sandals he had ordered from Elco (Chapter 3). -Luffy, I have a present for you,- he said, turning to the interested child, walking over and kneeling down. -Your new sandals,- he announced joyfully, taking the boy's foot and putting the shoe on him. -Perfect,- the Red-Hair drawled melodiously, hugging his Sun and resting his head on his lap.

Benn sighed heavily and nervously lit a cigarette. He hoped this would bring the captain to his senses a little. He himself wanted to give his gift to the sunflower. A black dress jacket would fit the child perfectly. It also contained a bit of darkness, which was aimed at protection rather than anything else. What a pity that everything would soon get worse and they would become demons incarnate.

Chapter Text

-Wait. I need to clarify,- Thatch raised his hand, interrupting Luffy's story. -You were given a ton of stuff, but the hat turned out to be more valuable?- he asked Luffy again. Everyone looked at him like an idiot. -Forgive me, I just can't understand how the hat was more valuable than the pile of things the kid listed.

-Well, it belonged to Roger himself,- the boy declared proudly, taking off his hat and showing it to the stunned listeners.

-Wait... What?!- Ace exclaimed in shock, casting a bewildered glance at the hat.

-Let me see,- Whitebeard asked his grandson, who hugged it to himself and glared hostilely with red eyes. -Please?

Luffy frowned in doubt, tilted his head in thought, and closed his eyes. Newgate watched this carefully, noting how much he reminded him of Vany (no idea why they call Croc that, but I like it) at that moment. Even how much his face flushed was striking.

-Well, well, no need to strain your head so much, you'll decide later,- the old man encouraged the boy, slightly ruffling the hair on the top of his head.

-Still, how did you get it?- Sabo asked, drawing the attention of his two brothers, who immediately looked dejected. -Did I say something wrong?- the blonde asked worriedly.

-No. He probably already told you that story before you lost your memory,- Mihawk encouraged, sitting on the sand next to the children.

-I see,- Sabo's own head drooped in sadness.

-I'm sure if Luffy tells you again, you'll remember the story.

-Agreed,- Marco nodded with a kind smile, approaching the two sullen boys. -Go on, little king, tell us the story.

-Ooh,- Thatch drawled with a smile, looking at his friend. -How nice it is to watch young lovers.

-Shut up, Thatch!- the first mate growled with a vicious look. -Maybe you should think about your own relationship,- the Phoenix hinted with a smirk.

-What do you mean?- the man asked, narrowing his eyes suspiciously.

-Well, I'm just curious when the celebration will visit you and Izou,- the pirate asked mockingly, sitting down next to the boys. -When should we expect the happy news of your wedding?-

-What... you... tch,- Thatch stammered in embarrassment, hearing cheerful laughter.

-It's true. How much longer do I have to wait for a proposal?- Izou asked with a smile, appearing next to his beloved.

-Izou!- the man exclaimed even more bashfully, turning away from the curious eyes.

-Let's get back to Luffy's story,- Mihawk requested, being more interested in that than the squabbles between the Whitebeard pirates.

-Then we need to clarify how I got the scar and how the demons of the Goa Kingdom appeared.

Memories: The Price of the Vow

Let's go back a long time. To the moment when the clock almost struck the hour. Because very soon, they will ring their bell. There is very little left until the moment a small ray of sunshine appears. Is this information important? Yes.

Because the curse loves to cling to the details of words, changing them to suit itself. Especially what is permeated with blood mixed with darkness. That's how desires gain the power of a promise and turn into a chain that will clasp around the neck. Everything becomes overgrown with thorns. So, one should hurry if they want to stay as long as possible.

But here's the catch. Everything gives way to the warmth of the Devil Fruit that the Red-Hair crew snatched from the Marines after a fight. The quiet drumming finds something familiar and interestedly drives the pirate to the boy. No one particularly notices this. Everyone wanted to see Luffy one last time. After all, they wouldn't be able to stay in the East Blue after this. It was time to return to the New World.

So, the ship docked for the last time at the shores of Foosha Village. Waiting for them on the pier was Luffy. He was dressed in the clothes they had given him and adorned with various -sparkly things,- as the boy called the elaborate decorations that Makino had carefully dressed the child in. At first, the villagers stared at him, and even a couple of bandits were ready to steal the boy, but the Haki surrounding him scared away any such desire.

-Shanks!- the Ray of Sunshine exclaimed joyfully, crashing into the man's legs.

-Glad to see you,- he replied with a smile, picking the child up and heading towards Makino's bar.

The little one just laughed and had already ruffled the pirate's red hair, putting the straw hat on his own head. Soon everyone was in the bar, resting after a difficult mission. Even Shanks was slightly tired and was half-listening to Luffy while sipping rum.

-Take me into your crew,- he pleaded with the man once again. -I'm already grown up.

-Mmm?- Not quite understanding what the boy had said, Red-Hair looked at him more closely with interest. -I don't see any changes,- the pirate teased, slightly flicking the rascal's nose.

-But today I'm turning seven whole years old! So you have to take me into your crew!- he protested, puffing out his cheeks and not noticing how everything around paused and looked at Luffy.

-So, it's today,- Benn said quietly, putting his half-empty mug on the table and approaching the captain. -Happy Birthday, Sunflower,- the first mate said with a smile, although no one felt any real joy about it. -But we can't take you with us.

-Yes, I'm sorry, Anchor,- Shanks whispered, gripping his mug tighter and downing his drink in one gulp. -Unfortunately, today is our last day in the East Blue. It's time for us to return to the Grand Line.

-But...

-I'm sorry, little one.

Luffy just clenched his fists and turned away from them in offense. He noticed a carelessly discarded knife, and an idea popped into his head.

-Then I'll prove it!- the boy whispered, grabbing the dangerous object and running out of the bar.

No one paid attention to this, as everyone was currently busy discussing the route and restocking the ship's resources. That's why they were late to notice Luffy appear at the bow of the ship, holding a knife. The horror of what was happening instantly reached the pirates, and Yasopp rushed to Shanks.

-The Ray of Sunshine is on the bow of our ship with a knife!- the man reported worriedly to the captain.

Hearing this, everyone rushed to the ship and saw the boy. A small part of the crew tried to persuade him to come down and hurried to reach the child.

-Shanks!- Luffy called out his name loudly, drawing the man's attention. -I'll prove that I'm worthy of being a pirate!- he said confidently, inflicting a wound on himself under his left eye.

Instantly, a wave of Haki filled the surroundings. Everyone fainted from fear or dropped to their knees in prayer. They watched in horror as the surroundings were destroyed by the energy lightning emitted by Shanks.

-HONGO,- the Red-Hair roared, hugging the crying boy.

The pirate immediately appeared next to him and instantly began treating the wound, stitching it up and muttering about Luffy's stupidity. He saw the monster intently watching him. One wrong move, and not even Benn would be able to save him from the demon, who possessively growled at everyone who even tried to come closer.

Notes:

I've split the chapter into two parts. I'll probably give it more thought due to laziness.
