Chapter 1: The Meeting
Chapter Text
Phoenix didn’t know when he found himself standing on a cliff with the ocean below. He didn’t know if he intended to go to a spot where he could put an end to his pain. But now that he was here, it was very tempting.
(‘How can I learn to trust anyone ever again?’)
No matter how much he denied it, no matter how much he wept, the pain inside his heart grew and grew until it was unbearable. He’s been in the same rut for days, hoping each time he starts a new one, it’ll get better.
It didn’t.
He thought maybe a walk could clear his head but all that followed him were his thoughts of wanting this to end. It was one thing to find out the person you loved never loved you back. But to try to kill you?
And he would have done anything for her, given his own life if he could. That’s how much he loved and trusted her… only to learn it was all a farce. He’s been played for a fool.
It gets easier eventually he’s been told. But how can he trust that? How can he trust anyone? Every time he is with a person, no matter how friendly they are, no matter how trustworthy they seemed, all he could think, “Is this their real self? What if they have ulterior motives? They might be thinking ways to betray me as they speak.”
No, Phoenix just couldn’t trust anyone anymore. He didn’t dare to. As he wept, looking at the ocean below, he knew how tempted he was. To take the step. To just put an end of the pain.
(‘So you’re really just going to run away, huh?’) His mind chided.
He thought long and hard. It seemed easy. Too easy. Was he really thinking of jumping just because he could no longer trust anyone?
He used to such an optimist but now all he sees is ugliness in this world, becoming bitter. He looked at the bright moon that was out, not even the beauty of it could sway him. It’s all the same. Everything is the same – he just felt empty.
He doesn’t remember if he actually slipped or not, but he was falling. He made a hard splash into the water, sinking low, the water icy cold. His lungs were burning. He was panicking. This was a mistake! But his body couldn’t move, he was sinking deeper.
Then he saw a figure approaching him. He thought at first he was hallucinating but then the felt a tight grip on his arms. Someone… someone took hold of him. He was no longer sinking, in fact, he felt himself being pulled upward in an alarming speed. Whoever was helping him was a fantastic swimmer!
Then air! Precious, precious air as he let out a huge gasp, still freezing but now above water. He was held tightly by his rescuer, who was swimming towards the shore. Or so he thought when the man? (yes, he was sure it was a man) then took a quick turn, apparently heading to what looked like a more secluded area.
“W-what are you doing?” He asked, teeth chattering.
“Don’t want to be seen.”
“Huh?”
He was brought upon what was a small cavern, being pushed onto the smooth stone hastily. His whole body was shivering but he turned to look at his savoir. He was still in the water, but it was a gray haired man with silver eyes. Phoenix almost thought this man looked otherworldly. Too handsome to be real. And he appeared to be around the same age as Phoenix.
“T-thanks for rescuing me there…” Phoenix managed to splutter out, his eyes never leaving the man. “Are you a l-lifeguard?”
“What are those?”
Phoenix didn’t know how to reply to that question as it should be obvious what they are. It’s even in their name! Was this guy messing with him?
“So just a good swimmer, t-then?”
“I suppose so.”
The man looked conflicted. Like he was trying to decide something in his head. Phoenix didn’t know what but he put out his hand for a handshake.
“Anyway, p-please accept m-my thanks…”
The man didn’t reach out his arm. Instead he looked at Phoenix’s hand, as if something was supposed to be there.
“There’s nothing…”
“What?”
Is this guy all there? Or is he really trying to mess with him?
Phoenix quickly forgot about it as he grew colder, shivering harder than ever.
“D-don’t mean to b-be rude but I need to get w-warm immediately…!”
“Is there a way you can warm up?”
“S-seriously? On my own I can’t!”
The man looked conflicted. He seemed aware that the only thing that can be done in this situation was to share body heat. Phoenix might have understood that not everyone was comfortable cuddling up with a complete stranger but he was too damn cold to care.
“P-please!”
“Alright…” The man reluctantly agreed. “Just… close your eyes.”
Close his eyes? What game is he playing at? None the less, Phoenix did what he was told. He heard the sound of the man getting out from the water and approach him, stripping him down to his underwear. He laid down onto him, doing his best to warm him up, which seemed to be working mostly as after some time, Phoenix senses came back to him. Just for him to realize there is something heavy and clammy lying onto his legs.
“Can you move that heavy thing?”
“What heavy thing?”
“Whatever THAT is!”
He smacked it without thinking.
“Nnngh!”
The man let out a noise that sounded like a startled moan.
“What is that thing anyway?”
Phoenix began touching the heavy object, it feeling rather scaly.
“What IS this?!” He opened his eyes, looking at what his hand is touching.
It was a… fish tail?
“Is this… some kind of costume?”
The man stayed silent. Phoenix ran his hand to find some sort of zipper or something. Nothing of the sort, just feeling the clammy tail being connected naturally to the upper part of his body.
“Holy shit, you’re a mermaid!!!”
“No!” The manfish looked incredibly insulted. “I’m a merman!”
“Same thing!” Phoenix yelled out without thinking.
“It is not! Do you want me to bite you?!”
He opened his mouth, showing his sharp teeth. Phoenix held up his hands as surrender.
“No! Sorry – you’re clearly a merman!”
“And now that you know, you better make sure you never tell anyone that you saw me!” He said with a threating tone.
“I won’t! Though I doubt anyone would believe me if I did.”
The merman just growled at him but remained at his side, still keeping him warm.
“Um… you’re staying?”
“You want me to leave?”
“No, no, no!” Phoenix responded quickly, fearing he would be left freezing out in the cool air. “It’s just… now that I know your, um, secret, why are you still helping me?”
“Honestly? I don’t know myself.” He muttered. “I should have let you drown in the first place. Your kind cause nothing but trouble so what is one less human?”
“Rude.” Phoenix frowned. “What did humans ever do to you?”
“Besides causing massive pollution in the home we live in, forcing many of us as well as the food we eat to grow sick? Humans cause nothing but destruction with little to no thought!”
(‘Well, when he puts it that way…’)
“I guess we can be jerks.”
An image of HER flashes into his mind.
“And downright evil…”
The merman looked at him with a mix of confusion and interest. Phoenix decided to change the subject.
“So… do you have a name?”
“If I had to guess… Miles Edgeworth.”
“Guess?” Phoenix asked, not understanding this strange reply.
“I don’t remember much of my past… or even why I can talk human.”
“Wait… are you saying that it’s unusual for merpeople to talk?”
“In the language humans use – yes. I have no idea why and how I learned it. It’s rather ironic how I can speak the same as those dreadful creatures!” He hatefully spat out the last line.
“If you hate humans so much why even bother saving me?”
“… I saw you crying on top of the cliff. I thought you looked lonely…”
“Lonely?”
“Yes. Something that…”
He didn’t finish the sentence but Phoenix could see it from his sad expression what he was trying to say.
“You’re lonely too, huh?”
The merman grew quiet, confirming Phoenix’s suspicion.
“What about the other merpeople? Don’t you hang out with them?”
“They mostly keep their distance. They don’t like the fact I can talk human language.”
“Wait, really!?” Phoenix couldn’t believe his ears. “That’s a shallow reason to shun someone!”
“Also for the fact that I always spy on humans to learn about them.”
“Oh… I guess that would be taboo, huh?”
“Very much so.”
“But hold on, if you claim to hate them, why try to study us?”
“Because being only able to live in the ocean is dreadfully dull!” He yelled in frustration. “Do you have any idea how little there is to do!? Swim around, eat, then swim some more! Whereas it seems humans have the ability for a whole other world for them to go to and explore! To be able to swim AND walk on land, entertaining themselves with objects that can play music or read from pages stuck together that contain stories! To hear stories how they travel to something called ‘amerika’ or ‘germanie’ like they are complete different worlds that offer different things to see and do – and I’m stuck in the same boring ocean!”
The way he describes it, Phoenix could see his frustration. It’s true the ocean is pretty… but if that ends up being the only place you can go…
After some minutes later, Phoenix felt warm enough to make it back home. He let the merman know who awkwardly moved away. It was fascinating how his tail can move gracefully even on land. Phoenix took his shirt and squeezed out the remaining water from it before putting it on. He noticed how he was being watched very carefully, as if this Edgeworth was expecting him to do any sudden movements. He would have wanted to stick around longer, talk to him more. After all, it’s a living merman who can speak his language – who wouldn’t want to know more? However, he knew it was best to head home and take a hot shower, he was still freezing after all. He wanted to see him again though so came up with an idea.
“Do you want me to show and teach you about human, uh, stuff?”
His face looked startled before quickly masking it to indifference.
“And why would you go out of your way to do that?”
“Well, for one you just saved my fricken life!” Phoenix spread his arms open, stating the obvious. “Plus we’ve cuddled. That means we should at least get to know each other.”
(‘Is that how it works?’) Edgeworth pondered.
“If it’s okay, I can come back at the same spot at the same time tomorrow. How does that sound?”
Edgeworth put his guard up. It could be a trick. He might come back with other humans and try to capture him. He looked into the human’s eyes who was looking at him hopefully. Even still his expression had a tinge of sadness. The same kind of sadness Edgeworth feels everyday.
“You might be better off with your own kind.” He said, attempting to talk himself out of taking the offer.
Phoenix let out a bitter laugh.
“Yes, because it worked out so well for me recently!”
Edgeworth flinched a little. It was clear this man went through something very unpleasant likely the reason why they met in the first place. Maybe this was his chance to learn more of the other world that was unattainable for so long. Maybe… just maybe he wants to learn more about the human in front of him.
(‘I must be out of my mind.’) He sighed.
“I suppose I can come by again.”
“Great!” The human looked very happy at his answer. “Is there anything specific you wish for me to bring?!”
“Human food.” Edgeworth answered bluntly. “Preferably not fish. I’m so tired of them.”
“Uh, tired of them? You eat fish?”
“Of course I eat fish. What, did you think we eat seaweed or something?”
“I dunno. I thought if merpeople exists, they’d be friends with fish.” Phoenix shrugged.
“Friends with fish? The very food we eat to survive? Why would you think that?”
“Never mind.” Phoenix realized it was rather dumb to think that as fish don’t even talk in the first place (nor sing). He blames that animated movie for giving him that idea. “I’ll bring something that’ll knock your socks off.”
“Socks?” Edgeworth frowned. “What are those and why do you want them knocked off.”
“Ah… sorry, that’s an expression. One that you’d obviously not get.”
Phoenix was in a hurry to get home and warm up, so he tried wrapping things up.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, alright?”
“What’s your name?”
Right, Phoenix never told him.
“Phoenix Wright. It was nice to meet you, Miles Edgeworth.” He waved as he left. “Thank you again for saving me!”
Edgeworth never really had the chance to ask why he was crying and falling (jumping?) from that cliff. He jumped back into the ocean, considering of asking him tomorrow.
*
Edgeworth submerged from the water, only allowing his head out in the open. He glanced at the isolated rocky cave from yesterday to see if the human returned. He was there. He was looking around for him, looking nervous yet hopeful. Edgeworth wondered how he managed to get there without getting wet as his clothes were clearly dry this time. He then spotted an inflated yellow-rubber boat he must have used to get there. He looked like he was the only one there so he took his chance and swam up to the cave. Phoenix spotted him and smiled widely.
“You came!”
“I suppose I did.”
“That’s great, I was hoping you would!” Phoenix grabbed a big plastic sack he brought with him and set it down in front Edgeworth. “I brought some stuff I thought you might like!”
He unbacked some of the items and showed it to him. Edgeworth smelled a delicious scent coming from one of them and picked it up.
“What’s this?”
“Ah, that is one of my favorite snacks. It’s a katsu sando.”
“A what now?”
“A sandwich with fried pork.”
Edgeworth blank look didn’t change.
“I guess you don’t know what a sandwich is…”
“Is this meat?” Edgeworth asked as he stared at what looked like the inside of a white fish.
“Yeah, from a pig… which I guess you don’t know what that is either.” Phoenix thought about how to explain it. “It’s like fish that live on land? But they are big and pink?”
It didn’t help that he sounded unsure. Phoenix probably should bring a children’s book with him next time to teach Edgeworth about land animals because he sure isn’t doing a good job of it. Edgeworth decided to bite into it and make his own judgement.
Oh! This taste…! The texture…! This was nothing like he ever had before!
It only took mere seconds and the whole sandwich was gone, Edgeworth licking his fingers for any leftover.
“I guess you liked that, huh?” Phoenix smiled.
“Bring more pig next time.” Edgeworth commanded.
“Sure thing.”
(‘I just hope he won’t ask me to bring him a whole pig.’)
“What else did you bring?” Edgeworth asked eagerly, hoping they are as amazing as the pig sand (even though it didn’t taste anything like sand).
“I have a book on the sights of Japan.”
He placed the book in front of Edgeworth and opened it for him. Edgeworth saw the pictures. They were places on land he’s never seen, nor could. Humans wearing this bright clothing called kimonos. Temples, huge buildings that stretched to the skies, festivals with games, Phoenix would turn the page and explain each and every one of them. Edgeworth’s eyes were transfixed, wishing he could see the real thing up close.
“These are so pink.” He commented at one of the pictures.
“Yeah, those are cherry blossom trees. Humans have a festival based around that.”
Edgeworth would have scoffed how humans seem to have any excuse to celebrate, but the more he looked at the trees, the more he understood. Even if he sees humans as useless and awful, the world they live in looked anything but.
“Do you have any questions?” Phoenix asked as he closed the book.
“Yes. Why where you at the cliff crying?”
Phoenix’s cheerful expression darkened. Edgeworth felt he might have crossed the line by asking. He had been curious since the day it happened but perhaps it was better not to say anything.
“Never mind, you don’t have to answer.”
“No, it’s… fine.” Phoenix responded but he still had a far away look. “Since you saved me, I might as well tell you. I had a girlfriend I’ve been seeing for months. She was kind, beautiful, and a great cook. Everyday was the best day ever when I was with her. I never trusted and loved anyone so much as her.”
Edgeworth could guess where this was going.
“And she broke up with you?”
“She tried to kill me.”
Edgeworth visibly flinched. Perhaps he couldn’t guess after all.
“When she failed doing that, she tried to frame me for murder.” He tightened his fists, looking at the verge of tears. “You’re right about humans… they’re the worst and I don’t think I can trust them myself. Not anymore!”
Edgeworth wasn’t surprised that humanity could affect its own kind like that. Still, he wondered if there were a lot of people like Phoenix out there. He didn’t appear to be evil. In fact, he would go so far as to admit that he might even like him… for a human of course.
“I suppose you can talk to me.” He answered. “Even if I talk the human language…”
“That makes it easier for us if anything.” Phoenix sighed, wanting to move on from the previous conversation. “However, I’m still curious how you came to learn it. Could it be you knew a human before?”
“I don’t know.” Edgeworth frowned. “I do not know why I’d want to be near one in the first place. Perhaps I was captured.”
“When did you lose your memories?”
“I can’t say for sure. I might have been a youngling.”
“As a kid?” Phoenix couldn’t help being curious about Edgeworth’s situation. “Even back then you still seem to remember your name. Isn’t there anything else?”
Anything else? Sometimes it feels like there was but Edgeworth couldn’t put his finger on it. He began to think hard. Harder than ever before. He always had the attitude of moving forward, no use on dwelling the past when there was nothing to dwell on. But he thought, he seemed to remember something. Something… almost familiar. Comforting.
He remembered a smile. A kind smile. His head being petted lovingly.
‘It’s alright. I’ll protect you.’
“Naaarrghh!!”
Edgeworth felt his head was about to split open, him doubled over in pain.
“Miles?” Phoenix sounded concerned as he reached his hand out. “Are you okay?”
Edgeworth was planning to avoid Phoenix’s touch but was too distracted with the pain to try to slap away the hand that was reaching towards him. When he felt the hand on his shoulder, it was almost like the pain subsided. The touch he dreaded now felt like a lifeline and he craved more.
“Need…” He gasped.
“What do you need?”
Edgeworth didn’t know what came over him but he grasped onto Phoenix like his life depended on it, squeezing him tight. His sharp nails were digging into his skin, causing flesh to tear. Phoenix felt his life being squeezed out of him. This merman had the strength of what felt like that of ten men and Phoenix could barely gasp out his words.
“Can’t… breathe…!”
Edgeworth came to his sense and immediately let go, Phoenix falling back onto the rocky ground, panting loudly as he felt his breathing return. First the drowning and now being nearly hugged to death – this must be some kind of record for him.
“I apologize!” Edgeworth panicked, his head returning to normal. “I do not know what came over me!”
“It’s cool.” Phoenix forced a small smile, still catching his breath. “After all, we cuddled.”
Chapter 2: Birthdays And Conception
Chapter Text
It nearly became a daily thing. Phoenix would visit and teach him about many things about the land. Edgeworth began to look forward to his visits, that waiting became nearly unbearable.
Even Phoenix began to bring a tent, setting it up on the cave, since their nightly visits could last longer than anticipated, that he sometimes sleeps in the cave. He brought other tools meant for camping, cooking supplies and a portable campfire, spending hours upon hours with Edgeworth. He even brings his phone to show pictures of scenery he’s taken that he knew Edgeworth would love to see (he wishes he could have internet access to show him videos). He brought him books meant for younger children, but it did help Edgeworth learn about common knowledge such as animals and parts of the world a lot faster.
He would also bring food or snacks for Edgeworth to try as he was always eager to try something different other than fish. It could have varieties of reactions as Edgeworth clearly had likes and dislikes.
“Blergh! This is far too sweet!” He complained when he tried his first soda.
“Too bitter!” He hissed as he spat out the coffee. He seemed to like it better when Phoenix added some sugar and cream, but it was clear he was not a coffee person.
He did like traditional sweets like the strawberry cream cake and mont blanc, as long it was well made and not chuck full of sugar. What he reacted most positively was food that had meat in it (not fish though. Phoenix thought he might like sushi, but Edgeworth complained he already ate raw fish all the time). He always devoured foods such as tonkatsu, yakitori, meatballs or meat and potato stew.
“More!” He said after stuffing his face, shoving the plate back to Phoenix.
“You know, if you keep eating like that, you’re going to get fat.” Phoenix sighed as he scooped more stew onto the plate.
“If I had the opportunity to eat like you all the time, perhaps I wouldn’t feel so greedy about it.” He sniffed, taking the plate and eating the food like an animal.
“Perhaps it would do you good if I taught you basic etiquette.” Phoenix sighed.
Phoenix once brought a portable radio and had Edgeworth listen to different stations, flipping to the ones he wanted to listen to. Phoenix was a little surprised that Edgeworth seemed to prefer music that was more in the pop genre.
“I want another Bon Jovi song!” He demanded.
“Sorry.” Phoenix shrugged. “The music is all random.”
Edgeworth grumbled, clearly not all into the next song of slow music about only time. If Phoenix could, he’d bring his CD player but again, no outlet.
One time, Phoenix came to see him later than usual, the merman looking annoyed how he had the audacity to make him wait.
“You’re late!”
“Sorry about that.” Phoenix apologized though he looked a bit happy. “I was surprised by my coworkers today at work.”
“What are you talking about?” Edgeworth looked confused.
Yeah, that was his fault. Phoenix never told him about his part time work downtown, but he didn’t think he’d be interested in hearing that. Phoenix himself wasn’t too interested in his job.
“I just turned twenty-two. Had a small birthday party and everything.”
“Birthday party?”
That didn’t look like it cleared anything up for Edgeworth.
“You know, a birthday? The day of your birth? Each year on that day, we celebrate being a year older with cake and presents.”
“Hm.” Edgeworth looked thoughtful. “Sounds fun.”
“Yeah, I was honestly surprised anyone remembered.” Phoenix looked very pleased. “They told me there was something else needed to be done, which annoyed me because I sure as hell didn’t want to do extra work on my birthday, but then they surprised me with a cake and drinks and all sang the birthday song. My friend Larry had the idea and got everything organized.”
The way his face lit up as he was talking about made Edgeworth feel a dark pit in his stomach. It sounded like Phoenix, despite his deep betrayal, seemed like he was getting along fine with other humans. Despite saying he can’t trust them, it no longer looked like that was something he was struggling with anymore. He even said one of the human was his friend. So that means…
Edgeworth had to address it.
“So… you won’t be coming over anymore…”
“I… what?” Phoenix looked flabbergasted.
“You were betrayed by someone and said you didn’t want anything to do with humanity. This is why you decided to befriend me in the first place. But now that it seems like you trust them again. Maybe you no longer want to come over anymore…”
“Oh Miles…” Phoenix looked heartbroken at Edgeworth’s words. “Do you really believe I only am friends with you because you are a merman?”
“Aren’t you?”
“I admit, you fascinate me. I never met a merman before.” Phoenix placed a hand on Edgeworth’s shoulder for comfort. “Heck, I didn’t even think they truly existed! But I like you, Miles. You gotta remember you did save my life and I’m forever grateful for you doing that. Not anyone would have done what you did, even your own kind according to you.”
“It’s true.” Edgeworth agreed awkwardly.
“And I like being with you. I like teaching or showing you new things and see how you react, your higher-than-thou personality, and how time flies whenever I’m with you. Yes, I started to learn to trust again and making friends with others but you know what – out of anyone, you are still and probably always be my best friend.”
Edgeworth didn’t know how to reply to that. No one ever wanted to be his friend because how different he was. Now he was directly told he was someone’s best friend.
“You really mean that?”
“With all my heart.”
Edgeworth turned away from Phoenix. He was very much NOT in the verge of tears!
“Aww, are you embarrassed?” Phoenix chuckled.
“Perish the thought!”
Phoenix was amused but for the sake of Edgeworth’s dignity, he decided to change the subject.
“Say, do mermpeople have birthdays?”
“No. How would we even know what day we were born to begin with?”
“Good point.” Phoenix felt if one lives in a world without calendars, that would be tricky indeed. “But you look to be about my age. I’m going to assume you’re old as me.”
“Hmph… there’s no way of knowing without a birthday.”
“I guess not.” Phoenix said as he was thinking up a plan. And that day was coming closer.
*
The part time job left Phoenix tired sometimes that he’d sleep in the tent he set up, getting up early in the morning to row back to shore and biking back to town. Edgeworth couldn’t lie to himself how it started to worry him. He felt he was keeping Phoenix from his own home. His own kind as well along with his own world. Even if he still had a great distrust of other humans, he still felt guilty. Phoenix did have friends after all, him talking about the birthday part confirmed this. He was keeping Phoenix away from where he came from, only going there to work.
(‘I want him to go see the cherry blossoms sometime…’)
No, scratch that, he wanted to enjoy it together with him.
After another night spending time together, Phoenix yawned loudly as he stretched his arms.
“Boy, is it that late already? I don’t feel like rowing AND biking tonight.”
“So you’ll sleep in your tent again?” Edgeworth looked concerned.
“Yep. It’s quicker for me to get my rest anyway.”
“Don’t you want to sleep in your own home?”
“I actually like sleeping here.” Phoenix smiled at him. “I sleep better, knowing you’re close by.”
Edgeworth felt something funny happening to his heart.
(‘He wants to be close to me!’)
It finally dawned on Edgeworth that he desires the same.
*
When Edgeworth arrived at the cave this evening, something was very different. Phoenix was sitting on a colorful rug, wearing a rather silly hat, surrounded by some of Edgeworth’s favorite food.
“Happy birthday!”
“Birthday?” Edgeworth was confused.
“Yes sir! This is the day you saved me and since you don’t know your own birthday, I decided to celebrate it on the day we met.”
Edgeworth didn’t know what to make of it. He never had a birthday before.
“Has it been a year already?”
“Yep, time flies when you’re having fun, huh?”
It was true. Before meeting Phoenix, most days were the same and dragged on forever. The past year didn’t feel long at all.
“Then we’ll celebrate on this day every year?”
“That’s how birthdays work.”
“You really go above and beyond for me.” Edgeworth felt a little flattered.
“And why not? I know what it means to be…”
Phoenix face fell when he realized what he was about to say. That’s right, he felt alone at one point too.
“If I may ask, what made you decide to trust again?”
“I guess I didn’t tell you, huh?” Phoenix nodded to himself. “It all started when the lawyer who defended me after my… ex tried framing me for murder came to check up on me.”
“Lawyer?”
“A person who defends people but that’s something we can unpack later.” He didn’t think Edgeworth would understand the court system right away, that could take time to explain as he wanted to stay on point. “She came to talk to me, wanting to know how I was doing. She even invited me to her hometown to ‘get away from it’ so to say and try to heal. Yeah, I decided to take up on that offer.”
“Was that the time you said you couldn’t see me for a few days?”
“Yep, around that time. I didn’t want to be away from you for too long but since her hometown was nearby, I thought it couldn’t hurt to check it out at least. I met her younger sister, she sure was a ball of energy but we got along great. And I eventually opened up to them about what I’ve been going through and what I was tempted to do.”
Edgeworth could clue in what he meant.
“Did you-”
“Don’t worry, I didn’t mention you. I just said that I thought about it. Her little sister started crying. My lawyer began apologizing for not checking on me sooner as she had been busy but saying that was no excuse and I… I just sat there stunned. A lawyer does try to help people but usually you need to pay money for them to do that. What she did was not part of her job description, she didn’t have to check on my wellbeing. She could have moved on now that her job was done but invited me out to small village and made sure I felt at home. And her sister, I known her for a few days but when she heard I wanted to die, she cried as if I was a close friend, even begging me to please never try to go through with it if I think about it again.”
Edgeworth was stunned himself. He would have thought he was being told a fairy tale, humans showing compassion, but since he met Phoenix, he knew humans are indeed capable of such.
“Honestly, I started crying myself. I was truly touched. I guess I needed a reminder that trusting isn’t all bad.”
Phoenix had a fond yet sorrowful look on his face as he reminisced. Edgeworth thought about asking more questions. Just who were these women? Phoenix suddenly clapped his hands together as if he wanted to move on from the topic to lighten up the mood.
“Anyway, why blabber on about that when we could be celebrating your birthday! I even got you a present!”
He handed him over the present and Edgeworth took it with great interest.
“That’s a pretty box, thank you.” He put down the present, looking at the ribbon tied to box that had a fun pattern to it. Phoenix tried not to laugh as Edgeworth kept staring at it.
“Uh… the present is inside the box. You can open it, you know?”
“Oh. That makes sense.”
Edgeworth didn’t want to ruin the pretty box but that was the only way to get the actual present inside.
“Geez, Miles! You don’t actually have to tear into it!”
It was too late for that, Edgeworth holding his present in confusion.
“My present is a box… inside a box?”
“A tin box containing tea.” Phoenix explained. “Out of all the drinks you tried, you seem to love tea the most and you have a fondness of cherry blossoms. So I pretty much got you cherry blossom tea.”
“Cherry blossom tea? That exists!?”
“Yep, you’re holding it right now.”
Phoenix let out a surprise yelp when he was suddenly tackled into a hug. He was almost afraid he was going to be nearly hugged to death like before but Edgeworth was careful this time. After the shock wore off, Phoenix found himself blushing.
“Heh, I glad you like it.”
“I love it!”
“I knew I got the right gift.” Phoenix beamed. “Let me get out the tea kettle and we can brew some.”
That would have been the cue for Edgeworth to pull back. He didn’t. The hug was going on much longer than expected.
(‘Does he like hugs?’)
He felt Edgeworth place his head onto Phoenix’s neck, and took his time enjoying Phoenix’s presences, apparently lost in his own world. Phoenix started getting suspicious it wasn’t just hugging that he was doing.
(‘D-did he just sniff me?!’)
*
When Edgeworth finally came to his senses and untangle himself from the hug, both tried to pretend nothing happened, resuming the party. It was Edgeworth’s first birthday party so he didn’t want to ruin things and contained his urges. It wasn’t his idea, it was instinct taking over as mating season was closing in… and apparently Edgeworth was responding to Phoenix as a potential mate.
Before, Edgeworth saw Phoenix as just a kid. Either sniffling or getting overjoyed over anything. Now that mating season was closing in, Edgeworth began to see Phoenix as a man. It could also have something to do that Phoenix matured over the year he’s known him. He seems more… handsome. He stopped wearing those bright flashy clothing and wore something more calming to Edgeworth, blue. Not to mention the days where he lets his hair grow a little on his face… Edgeworth doesn’t know why he finds it so attractive.
(‘Idiot! You are meant to mate with your own kind!’)
But Edgeworth knew he didn’t want to. He never cared for any other merpeople he knew. Mostly since they avoid him. Oh sure, during mating time he might be approached by some mermaids, and maybe one or two mermen, but he always shoos them away. He has no interest sharing his body with anyone who wouldn’t give him the time of day outside of mating season.
Phoenix was the only one that could interest him as a potential mating partner. There’s just no way Phoenix would ever agree to it. He’d be disgusted if he knew. He had to explain to him he had to stay away for a few weeks. He doesn’t know how. He doesn’t want to be honest.
Perhaps honestly might be the best route to explain why he’ll be gone for awhile, but he’d just keep a secret who’d he was looking for as a mate. Yes, that’s the best he could do.
“Hello, Miles!”
It WAS the best he could do when he was greeted by an overly cheerful Phoenix, shirtless.
“Why… no shirt?” He manages to spill out.
“I decided to go for a swim, it’s a warm summer night after all.”
Phoenix didn’t seem to notice Edgeworth’s change of attitude, wearing nothing but his swimsuit thinking nothing of it. Edgeworth on the other hand lamented why Phoenix had the need to swim tonight of all nights!
“Well, don’t just stand there – opps, sorry.” Phoenix still had trouble talking to someone who had no legs. “I mean, come on and sit beside me.”
Edgeworth would have refused but his body moved on his own, getting out of the water and edging close to Phoenix. Too close.
“Do I have something on my face?”
Edgeworth didn’t realize he was staring. However, even after being pointed that out, he still couldn’t stop.
“I’m guessing I do? Where is – hhmmmpf!?”
Edgeworth threw himself onto the man and kissed him deeply. Without realizing it, Edgeworth had entered the final stage of what his body was asking from him and instinct took over. Phoenix had to push him away, only managing to get him away a few inches.
“What’s gotten into you!?”
With a moment of clarity, Edgeworth did his best to explain.
“It’s… mating season for… me…”
“Mating season?? Do you have a mate?”
Edgeworth shook his head. Phoenix looked thoughtful.
“Well… then how about… you use me as a substitute?”
Edgeworth thought he heard wrong.
“I-I wouldn’t know if it’d count, being you know, human and all. But technically you are half human…”
That’s all Edgeworth needed to hear before devouring his lips again. Phoenix returned the kiss just as needy and eager. Edgeworth never kissed anyone before but it was something that felt overwhelming yet not enough.
“So… how do we do this? Do you have a dick?” He looked down to check. “Ah, yep. Guess it’s one of those retractable ones. At least it looks close to a human’s so I can work with this.”
He wrapped his hand around it and began stroking it fast. To his surprise, Edgeworth came right away, all over his hand.
“Damn, you really are horny!”
“I don’t have horns…!” Edgeworth gasped.
Even though he just came, his member was still stiff. This was something that needed a lot of work to satisfy. He removed his blue swim trunks, noticing how Edgeworth was staring at him, eyes full of lusts. It seems he likes what he sees, even if their species were different.
“What do you want?”
“You.”
Phoenix took his consent and spat into his fingers, doing his best to lube his own hole. It was a bit painful but he wanted to feel Edgeworth in him. He lowered himself onto Edgeworth’s hard and wet cock and gritted his teeth as he sunk himself on it.
(‘Ouch…!’)
Edgeworth eyes rolled back, his mouth hanging open. He almost came on the spot again. Seeing the pleasure on his face, Phoenix did his best to begin thrusting onto the cock. Slowly in and out, but this being his first time proved to be a little difficult to get used to it.
“Phoenix…” Edgeworth muttered his name again and again like a prayer.
“I got you…” Phoenix panted, moving upward before plunging himself in again.
“So good, so good, so good!” He blabbered, his tongue hanging out.
“Haa, you feel good too.” Phoenix gasped, pain starting to replace pleasure.
Edgeworth’s hips involuntarily bucked upwards as he came hard and fast suddenly. He once again couldn’t control it; he didn’t want to. Phoenix removed himself, feeling filled and sore already. But looking at Edgeworth’s flushed and desperate face, Phoenix figured he still wasn’t quite done.
“You want to continue?”
“Yes, please, please!”
Phoenix felt he should take a break of trying to please Edgeworth the same way (this was new for him and it wasn’t easy even though he just done it) he instead reached for Edgeworth’s cock to give it another stroke. That’s when he saw it.
“Oh hello? What’s this?”
Underneath the penis was something pink that was showing. If Phoenix didn’t know better, he figured it was a female sexual organ. It didn’t put him off, but it made him slightly confused. And intrigued.
“Can I touch it?”
Edgeworth would have told him best to stay away from that part, but it was begging to be touched. More than touched, it felt like it was itching, asking to be scratched.
“Please…”
Curious, Phoenix put a finger in it. It went in with ease, like it was trying to suck him in. It made it easy to add two more fingers, into the inviting soaked entrance. He lowered himself on Edgeworth chest, noticing how the nipples were hard, and began licking them.
“Nnngh!?”
It took Edgeworth by surprise at first but he began to welcome this new sensation. Phoenix began pumping his fingers in and out as he kept licking and sucking.
“Ahhh!” Edgeworth felt overly stimulated being both fingered and his nipples sucked simultaneously.
“Damn, it’s leaking a lot. It really is like a vagina.”
Edgeworth’s mind was fighting not to ask Phoenix to remove his fingers and replace it with something much bigger. He would be out of his mind to risk this. But he was aching so bad… too hell with consequences!
“Put it in!”
“You sur-”
“Yes!”
He didn’t need to be told twice after that. Phoenix removed his fingers, completely soaked, and inserted himself into the warm insides. It really did feel like he was in a women but figured it was a fish thing and began thrusting.
“Nagh! There!” Edgeworth gasped.
(‘Mine! My mate!’)
Edgeworth griped onto Phoenix’s buttocks as he felt himself being relentlessly pounded. Phoenix nearly slowed his thrusting due to Edgeworth’s sharp nails sinking into his skin, but it felt so good being inside Edgeworth, he couldn’t stop.
The true purpose of mating was overwhelming Edgeworth’s thoughts, that his animalistic character came out.
“Need, naah, sperm!” He blabbered thoughtlessly. “Fill me, ahhh, with your seed!”
“You want me, nngh, cum inside?” Phoenix panted.
“Yes, yes, I need your sperm!”
(‘My mate… can’t conceive…! Therefore, I… must be the one… to take his seed!’)
Phoenix was more than willing to give him what he wants as he came inside. For Phoenix, this was much easier and pleasurable for him to thrust himself into Edgeworth so he ended up doing that again and again. Edgeworth never once protested, becoming a moaning mess for the rest of the night.
*
Finally it felt his body was satisfied, Edgeworth snuggling onto Phoenix who held him tenderly. The sun was starting to come from the horizon, realizing they have been at it all night. Phoenix looked happy but completely exhausted, impressing Edgeworth how he was able to keep up with his stamina. Phoenix looked like he was about to doze off, but Edgeworth wanted to ask a question.
“Do humans also have mating seasons?”
“Eh, not really. I mean, we like to fool around but there’s no specific day or month when we feel the urge to do it.”
“Then what do you have?”
“We call them one-night stands. You meet and greet and then go on with your life.”
Oh.
So this is why Phoenix was all for having sex with him. Just a thing for humans to do and then… then go on with their lives. But why should he feel disappointed? Mating was meant to fulfill one thing and one thing only; it didn’t need to be from a lover – just someone who’d ensure their kind will continue to grow and not face extinction. And it isn’t like Phoenix is going to leave.
A one-night stand is fine. Just as long they can continue to stay together even if nature dictates it shouldn’t be possible.
*
Things returned to normal it seemed even though Phoenix had to admit he was a little disappointed. He thought maybe his relationship with Edgeworth would change, even if a little. However, Edgeworth acted as usual, hanging out with Phoenix in great interest to interact with new knowledge of what Phoenix would show, and eager for the food he brings. They chat endlessly about many things as usual, but no mention of what happened around two months ago. Phoenix had to come to the conclusion that what happened was nature taking its course and Phoenix was just there to help Edgeworth relief the anguish he was going through alone.
(‘Well, it’s not like what we have is bad.’) Phoenix reminded himself. (‘If anything, I have something to look forward to for the next mating season. Whenever that will be.’)
Today was a little different though, as he was waiting for Edgeworth and finally saw part of his head emerge from the water, he happily waved at him.
“Heya! Come on up, I’ve got curry cooking in the pot!”
“Smells good.” He showed a small smile but didn’t move.
“What’s wrong? Food’s not going to come to you, ya know?”
“Perhaps you can put it on a plate and place it on the edge?” Edgeworth suggested.
Now this is unusual. Why was he so hesitant to join him in the cave?
“Since when did you get so shy?”
“I am not shy.”
“Then come up.” Phoenix said as he patted on the empty space next to him. “I brought some more stuff too if you’re not in the mood for curry.”
Edgeworth took a deep breath, deciding he can’t keep himself hidden forever. He made his way out of the water, crawling towards Phoenix and sitting besides him.
“Oh no, I see what the problem is.” Phoenix said, staring at the small bulge of Edgeworth’s stomach. “I knew the food I kept giving you was going to make you fat. I need to bring something healthy from now on.”
“I’m not fat!” Edgeworth snapped and snatched a bag of chips Phoenix had.
“Hey – you shouldn’t continue eating junk food! It’s clearly not doing your body any good!”
“You said you’ll bring something healthy from now on, correct? Let me have this.”
“Sheesh…” Phoenix shook his head, frustrated. “Fine, help yourself. But I hope you do some more swimming after this; I don’t want to be the one responsible for you ruining your health.”
Phoenix really thinks it’s the food that the cause for his weight gain. Maybe it’s better he believes that – even though Edgeworth knew he couldn’t hide it forever. Just for now, he wants what they have to be the same as always. He cannot guarantee if Phoenix would even react to the news well.
Chapter 3: The Choice
Chapter Text
Phoenix was rather confused that Edgeworth began ignoring some of the human food he always loved to devour, returning to eating fish from the ocean at times.
“I thought you were tired of seafood.”
“Some of your human food smells weird.”
“And raw fish doesn’t smell weird!?”
“Just stop bringing food that has lot of spices in it.”
“Really? You love flavor, I thought.” Phoenix frowned. “You’re not sick, are you?”
“No.”
The way he responded firmly without hesitation sounded like he wasn’t lying. Just annoyed at Phoenix’s constant questioning. To be fair, Phoenix wouldn’t keep asking if Edgeworth would just give him a straight answer. It felt like he kept dodging Phoenix whenever he asked him if something was wrong. Just last night, all he ate was a huge bowl of steamed rice. Rice on its own doesn’t really have flavor!
Phoenix’s eyes went wide when he saw Edgeworth resurfaces from the ocean, a large lobster in hand.
“Damn, you caught a big one there! Can I have some?”
“Sorry, I’m eating it all.”
“Oh come on! It’s big enough for two!”
“That makes it the right amount of food.” Edgeworth muttered.
Phoenix heard that though it seemed like he didn’t intend for him to hear it. Before he could say anything, Phoenix flinched when Edgeworth took a bite out of the armored creature, crunching on it like it was candy. Those teeth are no joke and it didn’t help how upon their first meeting, he had threatened to bite him.
He finished the lobster in no time and Phoenix could only stare, amazed.
“You eat it with the shell on?”
“Don’t you?”
“No! Human teeth couldn't even put a dent on that!” Phoenix crossed his arms, grumbling a little. “Not to mention I never had lobster… looks like it ain’t gonna happen anytime soon.”
“Well, given you share your food with me, I suppose I can look for another.”
“Yeah? Sweet!” Phoenix pumped his fist into the air.
“But not right now.”
“Not so sweet…” Phoenix said as he lowered his arm.
“You can’t wait another day or two?”
“Technically, no.” Phoenix looked a little upset. “My boss wants me to work the night shift for the next week, things have gotten busy lately and I um, I need the money.”
“That’s fine.”
“It is?”
“Yes, if that means more money, more snacks for me.”
“Gee, thanks for understanding.” Phoenix rolled his eyes. “Also…!”
“What?”
“I got invited by Mia’s sister to the Kurain village again. I thought about going, but I don’t want to leave you too long.”
“You can go visit.”
“Are you sure?” Phoenix looked surprised. “Won’t you be lonely?”
“I’ll be fine, Phoenix, you don’t have to worry about me all the time. I have been doing alright for myself before I met you and it isn’t like you’ll be gone forever. It’s okay to put yourself first sometimes.”
“Really? I mean, I might be gone more than a month?”
“Again, a month isn’t forever.”
“W-well, if you insist.” Phoenix looked rather happy, much to Edgeworth’s dismay (though he didn’t dare show it). “Great, I’ll enjoy myself, but don’t worry, I’ll bring back a souvenir for you.”
(‘It’s for the best for us both if he spends more time with his own kind. It’ll make it easier…’)
*
“Say, can I call you Nick?”
“Huh?”
“You say your friend Larry calls you this. I want to call you that too, if it’s okay.”
Maya had been showing more of the sights he hadn’t seen the last time and there was no denying they’ve been growing closer. It was almost like they were siblings at this point, which might be why Maya suddenly wanted to call him his old nickname.
“I guess that’s fine.”
“Good, then it’s settled!” She said, beaming. “And you should think about visiting more! Mia tells me that when you aren’t working, you just disappear. She tells me you’re never home when she tries to check up on you. What’s up with that?”
“Um, just visiting a friend.”
“That’s a lot of visiting. Are they a roommate? Do you live with them?”
“Uh… it’s complicated.” Phoenix had no idea how to explain this without raising suspicions.
“Are they perhaps your lover?”
These words caught Phoenix off guard, causing him to trip on a rock in the middle of his path. He landed on something sharp (likely another rock) feeling his arm sliced open.
“Shit!”
“Are you okay?” Maya rushed to his side to check on him. “Oh no, you’re bleeding!”
“Crap… not good.” Phoenix looked at his arm, blood dripping out rather rapidly.
“Ouch, that gash looks pretty deep.”
“No kidding! I need to go to a hospital!”
“We don’t have hospitals.”
“A clinic?”
“We have a small one but it’s on the other side of the village.”
“Are you serious? I’m losing blood far too much!” Phoenix did he best to cover the gash with his hand but it did little to stop the bleeding. “I’m already feeling woozy…”
“Um, um…” Maya looked around to see if there was anyone nearby who could help. There wasn’t a soul in sight. “Look, I think I can help. Just don’t tell anyone – especially sis!”
Phoenix wondered what she was up to. She reached into a handbag she was carrying around, full of trinkets she kept on her today, fishing out a small jar. She bends down next to Phoenix opening the jar.
“Can you give me your arm?”
“Am I going to need to remove my hand?”
“Yeah but trust me on this. This’ll help.”
Phoenix had his doubts but let Maya take hold of his arm, coating her fingers with what looked like green salve from said jar. He winced when he felt this… salve being rubbed onto his injury.
“Hey, that won’t work – I need to wash the wound first!”
“Give it a second.”
Phoenix thought she was out of her mind. Then he noticed the intense pain was gone. Like it was never there. He stared at his arm, seeing the gash gone, his mouth agape.
“How…?”
“Eh-heh…” Maya, despite her chuckle, looked a little scared, as if she did something she shouldn’t have. “Special medicine from the village, passed down through centuries. Can get rid of any type of physical injury like it’s nothing – but if you are sick with a cold or fever then you’re on your own... Try not to tell anyone about it if you could.”
“Not tell… Maya, do you not know how amazing this is!” Phoenix spluttered. “You could sell this medicine! Do you have any idea how much this could help others if this was available outside the village!?”
“Shhhh!” Maya placed her finger over her mouth, looking around to make sure it was just the two of them still. “Keep your voice down, I can get in a lot of trouble for showing this to an outsider. Let alone using it on them.”
“But why?” Phoenix indeed lowered his voice, curious what the taboo could be.
“It’s a medicine we don’t have a huge supply of, one of the ingredients is rare for one. So it’s not something we can just sell.”
“What ingredient?”
“That would be another whole can of worms, so I ain’t saying.”
“Okay, fair. But why a huge secret?”
“Apart from preventing secrets from coming out that could cause ruckus and troublemakers for our village, it has always been tradition to keep the unknown from anyone who doesn’t reside here. For instance, remember the witch burnings?”
“Oh. Point taken.” Phoenix finally stood up, looking at his arm with amazement. “Though I’m pretty sure no one is burning witches anymore.”
“And I don’t want to get in trouble with sis and the elders so keep your yap shut.”
“Right, yes, I won’t say anything!” Phoenix didn’t want Maya to regret her choice, and he didn’t want to betray her trust. He cannot stand the thought of doing that to someone else. “Why don’t we change the subject?”
“Yes, let’s!” She sighed, rolling her eyes. “But at this point, what am I to show you next that would even catch your attention?”
“I dunno, I like the waterfalls and the trees.” He eyed at the scenery nearby, looking picture perfect. “Say, are those cherry trees?”
“Yep. Every spring we get to see the best cherry blossoms the world has ever seen.” Maya bragged.
“Yeah? He would love to see that…”
“Who? Your lover?”
Phoenix nearly stumbled again but caught himself.
“I’m not going to heal you twice, you know?” Maya warned.
*
Edgeworth was bored. He hated the quiet. He hated being alone again. He hated how much he missed Phoenix… and how much he’ll miss him in the future when…
Edgeworth shut his eyes tight. He did not want to think about it if he could help it. He had always been alone, he was used to it. Or so he thought. Rumors about him were spread more than ever, he was very much aware most merfolks knew he had been hanging out with a human. If he was isolated before, he now became downright despised. A traitor of his kind. Anyone who saw him, was quick to swim away from him like he was dirt. Edgeworth never cared what they thought, but the hostility he felt would made him wish he could just leave this ocean and never look back. And they knew. They could see his bump and make the connection. A traitor indeed.
He made his choice, and he had to live with the consequences.
He needs to get used to being alone. Well, he won’t be completely alone, but his child will no doubt face the same isolation he goes through just for being related to him. Related to a human.
He had to force to think of something to distract him of his situation or Phoenix but what? His past? Ever since he tried hard to remember, it ends up scaring him away. He remembers a smile. A comforting smile. Holding him…
Then there was blood.
He gripped his head in pain. He remembered blood! It wasn’t his though… he thinks.
“This isn’t worth remembering!” He gasped out loud.
Even if he remembered, what was the point? The past can’t be changed. And he feared if he remembered someone important, it’s clear they are no longer there. No, it’s the future he should focus on. Even if it looks to be a bleak one.
He desperately wanted to reach out and hold… someone! Like last time. He wanted to hold Phoenix again. There was nothing.
He never felt so alone in his life.
*
Phoenix wished he had a way to contact Edgeworth. Maya gave him her cell number and he even had Mia’s but there’s no way a merman can keep a phone. Once he came back, he paddled his small boat back to the cave, his tent still up. All he could do was wait. And wait.
He set up a fire, had the portable radio on, hoping these would attract Edgeworth’s attention somehow. He waited some more. Phoenix was getting worried. Did something happen? He didn’t give up on waiting, and he was on the verge of falling asleep. When he opened his eyes after dozing off for a few minutes he nearly jumped.
“Ack!”
Edgeworth was there in the ocean, staring at him.
“Geez, you’re right here! Why didn’t you announce yourself?”
He would have scolded Edgeworth more but stopped when he noticed how miserable he looked. Not at all how he expected the reunion.
“Miles? Are you okay?”
“I’m not sure.”
“No?” Now Phoenix was getting scared. “What happened? Can I help in any way!?”
“I can only be honest with you, Phoenix.”
“Huh?”
Edgeworth got out of the water and slithered over to Phoenix. When he seated himself next to him, Phoenix thought he could tell what the problem was.
“Uh… not to be rude but your stomach is getting bigger. What have you been eating?”
“Seafood as usual.”
“Have you not been excising?”
“Phoenix, I need you to listen – I’m carrying your child.”
Phoenix was quiet for a second before laughing.
“Ah, good one! You nearly got me there!”
Edgeworth’s expression hasn’t changed, still looking dead serious which caused Phoenix’s laugh to turn awkward.
“Right?”
“Have I ever been known to joke around?”
“B-but you are a guy…! Wait… so you ARE a mermaid!?”
“No, I made that clear I wasn’t!”
“But then how is it possible!?”
“I can’t say I’m entirely sure but it is believed that many mermen evolved into having another reproductive organ over the years when our kind were on the verge of extinction. By any means necessary, we needed to have the means to keep our race going.”
A lightbulb went off.
“Oh! Like male seahorses!”
“Male seahorse don’t get pregnant, they carry their babies in their pouch until they hatch.”
“I knew that…” Phoenix mumbled (he did not).
“Either way, I tried to avoid this from happening. I wasn’t even sure if it was possible to mate with a human but it’s clear I now have my answer.”
“Then… we’re going to be parents…?”
Phoenix’s emotions were all over the place. He never thought about being a dad, especially when he thought it would be impossible moments ago. Was he happy about this? Upset? This was something he needed to process. How can one drop a bombshell like this out of nowhere and have his feelings in order? He needed time.
“Is… is the baby going to be human?”
“Doubtful.” Edgeworth answered honestly.
“I see…” He felt like he still had hundreds of questions. “So uh, how will the baby come out?”
“The same way it went in!” Edgeworth hissed, feeling like he is stating the obvious.
“Of course! That makes sense…!”
Edgeworth sighed, clearly irritated.
“If you wish we go our separate ways, then maybe it’ll be for the be-”
“Separate ways!?” Phoenix looked horrified at what Edgeworth suggested. “Why would you say that!? Do you think I’m just going to abandon you because I knocked you up!?”
“Knocked me what?”
“Please answer, Miles!”
Edgeworth sighed again, nodding. This was all his fault. He had something in his life that was perfect and he had to ruin it because of his weakness. He should have fought his instincts with all his might, instead he gave in without a thought.
“You cannot be around when I have the child. It will pose far too much danger.”
“What are you talking about? What danger? You and I got along just fine so why can’t I be with my… my kid?”
The mere suggestion from Edgeworth telling him to stay away didn’t just hurt him, it terrified him of not being able to see Edgeworth anymore. Scared that he can’t even meet the baby that not too long ago he questioned if he even was happy about the news.
“You don’t understand! If you raise them as their father, they will believe it will be safe to approach humans before they even learn how to talk! We make it clear that younglings should only stick to us as we show our detest to humans in front of them by any means necessary, so they’ll understand to keep away. But if you are by their side…”
“Then we’ll go somewhere!” Phoenix insisted. “Somewhere it’ll be safe and it’s just us three!”
“Pray tell me where such a place exists!”
This left Phoenix stunned silent. Where would such a place exists?! He could try to take him to his home… but how? He doesn’t even know how to drive and he can’t place a whole merman on his bike without it standing out. And even if he manages to bring Edgeworth to his place, it was just a small apartment that was already difficult for one person to live in. Was he supposed to place Edgeworth in his cramped bathtub and keep him there? That would be no way to live, especially when there is another merbaby on the way he would try to keep hidden.
“I don’t know...”
“Exactly.” Edgeworth wanted to place his hand on Phoenix’s but couldn’t bring himself to do it.
“And there is no way for you to become human, is there?”
“How would I pull that off?!”
“I dunno. Don’t you guys have sea witches or something?”
“Sea witches!? Where on earth do you even get your information from!?”
Again, Phoenix blamed that animated movie for now looking stupid.
“If I could turn into a merman and join you…” He said out loud without thinking.
“No! You do not want that!” Edgeworth protested harshly.
“Why not?”
“Do you have any idea how dull it is!? I told you about that when we first met. And you live in a world where you have the ability to do and see many things – eat different types of food – even interact with others. I’m still an outcast, remember? That would make you one too if you hung out with me. No, do not make such a silly wish without thinking. It isn’t worth it.”
“But…”
(‘I just want to be with you. Why does it have to be silly?’)
Phoenix didn’t even have the courage to say it out loud. Not that wishing would change anything, that much was clear.
“Then… you think I should leave when the baby is born?”
“It would be for the best. For their safety…”
They reached an understanding but neither could be happy about it. Phoenix wanted to continue to be with Edgeworth, continue spoiling him. It hurt to think that they have to say goodbye.
(‘Did you really think this would go on forever?’) He asked himself.
He didn’t know the answer, he just knew he wasn’t ready to leave Edgeworth and move on with his own life. If anything, he wanted Edgeworth to be part in his life but how? The merman was right in front of him and he was already missing him dearly.
“So… um… I brought you a souvenir like I promised. Would you like me to give it to you?”
Instead of his eyes lit up with joy whenever Phoenix offered him gifts, Edgeworth just nodded weakly. There was no hope on going back to how things were and pretend that everything was normal. They could try but it'll only get them so far.
*
Months continued to go by as Phoenix desperately tried to regain a sense of normalcy. Edgeworth seemed to play along but his overgrown stomach only reminded them both that the clock was ticking. Phoenix breathed through his nose, deciding to ask a personal question.
“Can I feel your stomach?”
“If you like?” Edgeworth answered, looking a little confused that he asked that out of nowhere.
Phoenix had been trying to ignore the elephant in the room for so long (mostly because he could not get to know or bond with the child) but he could no longer deny himself his strong need to get to know his baby. He placed his hands on Edgeworth’s belly, it felt like he was touching a water balloon.
“I think they’re moving… yes! I can definitely feel them!”
Edgeworth was stunned on how happy Phoenix looked. He knows the baby is the reason he needs to stay away. He can’t even meet them properly. But he looks so happy.
“Did you think of a name yet?” Phoenix asked enthusiastically.
“Not really.”
“Then maybe I can help with that.” Phoenix looked thoughtful. “Now if it’s a girl… Ariel maybe?”
“Why Ariel?”
“Because of… you know what, I need to stop bringing up that movie.”
“What’s a movie?”
“I’ll explain later.” Phoenix grinned sheepishly. “If it’s a boy… let’s see…”
“Why are you doing this?”
“Huh?”
“Why try to get involved…?” Edgeworth said bitterly, looking hurt. “You can’t… you’d endanger them…!”
“Can’t I still be part of your life while I still can?”
He does! He wants to shout it, he has no one but him! Perhaps that will change when their child is born but they might end up being all alone. Just like him.
“Miles?”
“What names do you like?” Edgeworth just asked.
“The ones I like? I guess this is something for me to mull over a little.”
“Then let’s do it.”
Phoenix giving him a smile made it worth it.
*
“Phoenix, you should really think about getting back to work.”
Edgeworth was concerned how Phoenix was calling in sick days, not leaving the deary cave. Only being away to get supplies before coming back before an hour passed.
“It’ll be fine. My boss owes me anyway.” Despite saying this, his eyes were dark due to lack of sleep.
Edgeworth regretted telling him three days ago that he felt his due date was close. Now Phoenix refuses to leave his side unless he can help it. And he was hardly sleeping, always keeping an eye out for him if he needed anything.
“Why are you so determined to stay?”
(‘I want to be with you no matter what.’)
“I want to make sure everything goes smoothly.” He said instead.
“Why? We’ve done this on our own for years. It’s nature. Do you even know what to do?”
“No.” Phoenix shuddered. “In fact, it freaks me out thinking about it. But I want to make sure you’ll be fine.”
Edgeworth placed a hand on his head, feeling his headache increasing. He’s touched, sure, but he made it clear he doesn’t need to neglect his own health doing so.
“Get some sleep, Phoenix…”
“I’m telling you, I’m fine.”
Edgeworth had enough, slithering up to him, taking hold on his back before slamming him onto the futon he left outside.
“Sleep!”
Phoenix knew when he was beaten. He grunted in annoyance but the futon felt nice and warm. He’ll have a fifteen-minute power nap and he’ll be good to go.
When he woke the sun was just starting to come up. He had slept nearly the entire night.
“Crap!” He sat up in panic but felt a hand placed on his shoulder.
“You need to learn to relax.”
“Miles? Oh thank god, you’re okay.” Phoenix sighed as he sunk back onto his futon.
“I don’t mean to alarm you but I need to get into the water.”
Phoenix was now wide awake.
“You mean-!?”
“Yes, now carry me into the water.”
Phoenix was amazed how Edgeworth could still keep his cool and be commanding while Phoenix was panicking. He knew he should keep it together as he used all his strength to pick up Edgeworth. Not helping that his tail itself was plenty of heavy but he managed to bring him into the ocean. He took off his shirt and joined him, not wanting him to be alone. He placed his arms around Edgeworth from behind, rubbing his stomach, hoping that would help.
“How are you feeling? Any pain? Do you need anything?”
“I’m fine.” He grunted. “Just stay with me…”
Phoenix continued rubbing Edgeworth’s stomach as he seemed to take comfort in that. Edgeworth held on tight onto Phoenix like he was his lifeline. He was breathing hard, his face pained but he was doing relatively well. What’s more, Phoenix was taken aback how labor among merpeople was nowhere near as long as a human’s. They were in the ocean for about half an hour before Edgeworth was holding a fussy baby in his arms.
“Is it a boy? Girl?”
“She’s a girl.” Edgeworth confirmed as he held her.
It was surreal. At first glance, she looked like an ordinary baby but the lower part of her body betrayed that, having a tailfin like Edgeworth predicted she would. So she was a little mermaid after all.
The birth turned out surprisingly clean and easy all things considered. If there was a lot of screaming and blood, Phoenix would have fainted on the spot.
“I’m glad it went well.” He sighed as he got out from the water.
“Of course, I told its nature.”
“I think most humans would wish nature would be as easy on them.”
“Is it really that difficult?”
“You have no idea!” Phoenix laughed a little before focusing on the infant in Edgeworth’s arms.
“Can I… hold her? Just once?”
That would be fine, right? It’s not like a newborn would form memories. Edgeworth handed him their daughter, and Phoenix held her gently in his arms. She had silver hair like her father, a tiny tail that was already wiggling as if she’s already eager to go in the ocean and swim. Her eyes seemed to resemble Phoenix's to a T. When she opened her mouth to yawn, he could see her sharp teeth.
“She already has teeth!?”
“Yes?” Edgeworth answered as he took a seat next to Phoenix, not knowing what the big deal was.
(‘Guess that’s normal for Miles’ species. I better not put my fingers anywhere near her mouth – she’d bite them right off!’)
“Hello. Welcome to this world, little mermaid.”
Phoenix started to choke as he said that. He couldn’t look away from the small baby, half human, half fish. But she was his. Or so he hoped she was. He was told he can’t stay… but he wanted more than anything to be with her. With Miles. As a family.
“She is so cute.” He sobbed as tears streamed down his face. “Even though I just met her, I’ll miss her dearly. I’ll… I’ll miss you, Miles.”
He was very hesitant as he handed her back to Edgeworth. His hands shaking, as well as his body. Just like that, he was back to being the person Edgeworth knew him as when they first met. Crying hard with snot running from his nose. Worse was that Edgeworth wanted to join in.
This was it. Likely the last time he’ll ever see Phoenix again. The only thing he would have to remind him of is the child in his arms. They’ll never see or hear from each other again. No more tea or sandwiches. No more music. No more books or late-night stories. No more Phoenix Wright.
Edgeworth began hyperventilating. He couldn’t lose him. He can’t bear it.
Edgeworth grabbed his arm before Phoenix even had a chance to turn around to leave.
“Wait!” Edgeworth was aware he was letting his emotions take over, but he knew he wasn't going to change his mind. “Please don’t leave me! … Don’t leave us…!”
Without a single hesitation, Phoenix sat back down, holding Edgeworth and his daughter close. Edgeworth burrowed himself deep into Phoenix, child still in his arms, close to tears over his human giving him his answer though no words were said. A choice was made and it was clear that there was no going back. Phoenix didn’t know what will happen going forward but he’ll make it work. He HAD to make it work.
Chapter 4: Remembering
Chapter Text
They held each other for a long time, experiencing mixed feelings. They had moments of bliss alongside worry and stress, wanting to be happy in each other presences. But was this the right thing to do?
“So, um…” Phoenix tried to break the ice. “How are you feeling? Physically, I mean?”
“Tired.”
“I bet. You just gave birth after all.” He glanced down on the infant who began wiggling, as if trying to break free from Edgeworth’s arms and go out on her own already.
“Wow. This girl already has a full set of hair and teeth…” Phoenix marveled. “Um, hello there? Can you speak?”
“She’s a newborn, of course she can’t speak!” Edgeworth frowned.
“Geez, sorry if I’m not familiar with newborns of another species.”
He waved at the infant, who was looking a little curiously at him.
“Hello, sweetie. What do you think of life so far?”
She titled her head, studying Phoenix closely. Well, she was mostly studying Phoenix’s hair, finding his spikey hair fascinating. She stretched her arms out towards him.
“Aww, do you want me to hold you?”
Phoenix picked her up in his arms as she continued to try to get closer to him. And when she did, she reached out and pulled his hair.
“Ouch!”
She giggled at Phoenix’s reaction, trying to continue trying to grab another fistful of hair. Edgeworth quickly took hold of her, untangling her hand from Phoenix’s spikes.
“No, we do not pull.” Edgeworth scolded.
She responded by giggling again, still trying to reach out for Phoenix’s spikes even as Edgeworth was pulling her away from him.
“Geez, a newborn who can already laugh…” Phoenix groaned as he rubbed his hair. “We got a wunderkind here.”
“Wunderkind?”
“Genuis child.” Phoenix clarified.
“I think she’s normal.”
(‘I guess merpeople have a huge one up over humans on that department.’)
“So… do you know what you want to call her?” Phoenix asked. “We’ve been mulling over names for quite a bit. Did one stand out?”
Edgeworth blushed deeply.
“Blossom…”
Phoenix barely heard him.
“What’s that?”
“I thought maybe Blossom?” He answered louder, a little embarrassed.
“You mean like Cherry Blossoms?” Phoenix smiled widely. “You sure love those trees, don’t you?”
“I would love to see them up close someday.” Edgeworth sighed, not believing that it’s ever possible.
“I love the name.” Phoenix says as he ruffled his daughter’s hair. “What do you think?”
Her eyes went wide, grinning as she took Phoenix ruffling her hair as a permission to grab his spikes again.
“Ouch! Okay, you seem to like my hair more.”
He chuckled as Edgeworth had to pull her away from Phoenix again.
“I think she’ll like it.”
“I’m sure she will – but daddy’s hair is off limits from now on, okay, Blossom?”
She just giggled again, something about Phoenix must amuse her. Not that Phoenix is complaining. Already born and she showed her playful personality. Phoenix was wary though if he should be happy – she showed no signs of being afraid of him. Not that she had a reason to. Edgeworth was right, this could put her in danger.
“Miles, how do we keep her away from other humans?”
Edgeworth furrowed his brows; aware he can’t ignore this problem for very long.
“I’ll think of something.”
He didn’t know what. He was too tired to even start. Phoenix noticed.
“You wanna take a nap?”
Edgeworth nodded, lying down on Phoenix futon, hugging Blossom close to him. She decided to join her father’s nap when she felt the softness of the futon, curling herself into him.
“Can I join in?”
“Of course.” Edgeworth responded matter of fact. “In your own words: we cuddled.”
Phoenix chuckled as he snuggled up with Edgeworth, petting Blossom’s hair who was between them, already close to falling sleeping.
(‘I mean, we’ve done a lot more than just cuddle.’)
“Not gonna grab my hair this time, eh?”
“Don’t give her ideas.” Edgeworth warned.
“True, but I love her hair. It’s so soft and beautiful just like yours.”
Edgeworth felt himself go red. Why does this idiot make such statements without thinking?! Well… maybe it’s fine.
*
The following week, things went swimmingly. In some cases, literally.
“Holy molly, look at her go!” Phoenix gaped as he watched Blossom’s first swimming lesson. “She’s already pro!”
Edgeworth kept an eye on her as Blossom swam the same speed of a fish. Luckily Edgeworth was faster than her, able to prevent her swimming too far.
“She isn’t yet.” Edgeworth explained. “Swimming just comes natural to us.”
“Man, you guys can do almost everything once you’re born.” Phoenix said envious. “We can’t even walk for a whole year or two when we’re born.”
“We can’t walk. Ever.”
“Right… sorry.”
Phoenix didn’t mean to bring up what divided them. It still weighed heavily in his mind. As much as he tried to think of a solution, nothing ever came close. His thoughts were interrupted when Blossom came out of the water, crawling toward Phoenix with a fish in her mouth. She dropped the fish right in front of him.
“Uh, thanks?” Phoenix said, not knowing what he’s supposed to do with it.
“She wants you to eat it.” Edgeworth explained, knowing what Phoenix was thinking.
“Heh, sorry, honey but I don’t eat raw fish. Not like this at least.”
“E!” She persisted as she picked up the fish and kept showing it, hoping Phoenix would take it.
“Um, thank you.” He took it as he didn’t want to disappoint her.
She looked at him intensely, waiting for him to take a bite. Phoenix looked over to Edgeworth awkwardly. He just shrugged, not knowing how to handle this either. Blossom never saw Phoenix go hunting with them or separate and assumed he was incapable of doing so. This was her way to make sure he wasn’t going to starve.
“Okay, I’m taking a bite…” Phoenix held it up to his mouth, pretending to eat it. “Mmmm! So good!”
Blossom wasn’t fooled.
“E!” She jumped onto his lap to get leverage, shoving the fish into his mouth.
“Hmmpf!” Phoenix spat the whole fish out, coughing. “Urgh! Disgusting!”
He regretted that immediately as Blossom’s expression turned into sadness, covering her face as she began sobbing.
“Oh no, no, no, I didn’t mean it that way! Look, I’m eating it!”
Phoenix quickly picked up the fish, taking a small bite, and chewing slowly, doing his best to pretend to like it.
“Oh yum, yum. So good.”
Blossom removed her hands, sniffling, going back to looking intensely at him. Phoenix finally swallowed, forcing a smile as best as he could.
“Yes, you caught a good one.”
“E!” Blossom perked back up.
“I can’t believe you ate that.” Edgeworth himself was amazed.
“You’d be surprised the things I managed to eat before I met you.”
(‘Like glass.’)
“Do not force it to please Blossom though. I don’t want you getting sick.”
“I’ll do my best. I think I packed a sandwich.”
“Is it katsu sando?” Edgeworth’s interest sparked as he got out of the water himself.
“Yeah, I figured it was high time to return to the classics.”
He had two sandwiches packed, one for him and Edgeworth. He handed over the one for Edgeworth who had no trouble eating it in seconds. Again.
“You can take your time and enjoy it, you know.”
“I AM enjoying it.” Edgeworth remarked.
“Whatever, I’ll eat it my way.”
Phoenix took hold of his own sandwich; he already couldn’t wait to dig in to get rid of the fish taste in his mouth.
“Ooo!”
Blossom looked at the sandwich with great interest. She hadn’t seen many other types of food before other than fish, and she thought it smelled good.
“No, this is daddy’s lunch.”
Phoenix TRIED to say no but Blossom kept eyeing his food.
(‘Crap… she’s giving me the dreaded puppy eyes…’)
“Okay, look, I can give you little for you to try.”
He tore a little bit from the sandwich and held out the piece to her. She took the piece and put it into her mouth. Her eyes went wide. She then snatched the rest of the sandwich from Phoenix who made the mistake of letting his guard down. She chomped the rest of it, perhaps quicker than Edgeworth.
“Your daughter just stole my lunch…”
“Uh-huh.” Edgeworth didn’t sound sympathetic. “You should have thought twice before introducing her human food so young. Now she’ll become a picky eater.”
“I’m going to have to buy food for all three of us now, do I?” Phoenix panicked a little, he was starting to struggle with his budget. “No way, Blossom hasn’t been eating fish forever yet. She’s not going to be addicted to human food.”
He picked up the fish and showed it to her.
“Look, do you want to share this with daddy?”
Blossom ignored it and flopped toward the basket Phoenix kept his food, tearing into it, trying to find any scraps of that tasty meal she just tried.
“And now I have to buy a new basket…”
“You should have thought this through.” Edgeworth chided.
“As if I can say no to her when she gives me that look.” Phoenix defended himself. Either way, his stomach was making noise and he had nothing left to eat.
“Guess I’ll have more of that fish then…”
*
Blossom had taken up the habit of chewing everything she could get her hands on that was remotely chewable. They hardly ever last, always ending up in tiny pieces.
“Is she teething?” Phoenix guessed. “She already has a full set of teeth.”
“Baby teeth.” Edgeworth corrected. “She’ll eventually lose them and grow adult ones as she gets a little older.”
“I guess I should see if I can find her something long lasting to chew on.”
Phoenix thought for a moment going into the local pet store. She already eats fish alongside fish bones so maybe he should get one of those large dog bones?
(‘What am I thinking!? My daughter is not a dog!’)
(‘Nah, she’s just half fish.’) His brain retorted. (‘Oh, shut up.’)
Blossom made attempts to jump back into the ocean but Edgeworth caught her and held her tight, trying to keep her close. She struggled in his arms, not understanding why she can’t leave and go for a swim whenever she wants to.
“I worry about her.” Edgeworth finally spoke up what he was trying to ignore. “She has a curious nature. I try to keep an eye on her on all times but sooner or later…”
He stopped in mid-sentence, afraid what he was about to say.
“It’ll be okay.” Phoenix said, trying to perhaps convince himself more than Edgeworth. “We’ll figure something out.”
“Like what?”
“Well, I’m sure we’ll think of something.”
(‘We can’t keep her on a leash. I can’t take her to my tiny dinky apartment. I can’t possibly find another ocean or lake where no other human would wander by.’)
“I’m sure of it!”
(‘Who are you fooling?’)
No. There had to be an option out there. He just didn’t know yet.
(‘Would you forgive yourself if anything happens to her?’)
“If you figure anything out, you better tell me.” Edgeworth interrupted his thoughts. “I want her to live in a safety without me having to confine her.”
“I know what you mean.”
(‘Maybe I can win the lottery and buy my own plot of land and a mansion with a large pool… yeah, like that’s ever gonna happen!’)
He sighed and picked up a stick he brought along, showing it to Blossom.
“Hey, think this could help with your teeth?”
Blossom jumped from Edgeworth’s arms and hurried over to give it the bite test. She snapped at it that was rather close to Phoenix’s hand holding it.
“Gah!” Phoenix jumped back in fear. “Give me a little heads up – you could bite my whole hand off it you aren’t careful!”
Blossom had a glint in her eye that one would see in a hunter. Phoenix did not like that she was now looking at him like he was prey.
“Um, sweetie? Honey? Daddy’s not a chew toy…” Phoenix kept backing away as Blossom approached him, teeth gnashing. “Uh, help! Miles, I think she wants to bite me into pieces here!”
Edgeworth was busy laughing to explain to Phoenix that Blossom was just playing, clearly getting a kick out of scaring a grown man by just showing her teeth.
If these moments could always last…
*
It had been seven peaceful, stressful yet fun months. It almost felt like time stopped. That there was nothing that was going to disturb that peace.
“Phoenix!!!”
Phoenix let out a snort, waking up from taking his nap even though it was closer to nighttime. He’s been more exhausted than ever, going back and forth to work and back to the ocean. He’s been doing it every day (expect on his days off when he stayed with Edgeworth and Blossom) and his body was beginning to take his toll. But he did not want to be away from his daughter. Nor from his… lover? Did he and Edgeworth ever sat down to discuss the true nature of their relationship?
“Phoenix, for goodness’s sake, wake up!”
Phoenix finally woke up completely, sitting up in one go. The worry in Edgeworth’s voice finally registered his brain.
“What, what’s wrong?”
“It’s Blossom! She’s…!”
Oh no. No, no, no, no, no. Please don’t let his worst fears be true.
Phoenix scrambled from his futon and rushed out of his tent. Edgeworth waiting for him, holding Blossom in his arms. She was injured, bleeding from her left side torso.
“Oh god… how…?”
“Never mind that, can you help her!” Edgeworth shouted in full panic.
He was right. Phoenix immediately removed his shirt, ripping it in half. He inspected Blossom’s wound which was looking rather deep, like she had been cut. To stop the bleeding, he wrapped his shirt around her.
“Did a human…?”
“Of course, a human did this! Only a human is capable of this!”
Phoenix ignored the sting in his heart when he heard Edgeworth shout this with such venom. Then again, he couldn’t blame him. Phoenix hated whoever did this with his whole heart.
“Blossom, are you doing okay?” Phoenix asked her gently as if he expected an answer.
“Nnnng.” She just looked at him, clearly hurting but in more ways than one. The way she was looking at him right now as if she’s questioning if she should trust him.
“Blossom… I’m so sorry…”
(‘Damn you who did this!’)
“Of course she’s not doing okay!”
Phoenix never seen Edgeworth so scared and he fully understood where he was coming from. He scared and close to panicking himself, but it wouldn’t help anyone if he didn’t try to stay calm.
“Can you heal her?!”
“I can’t. But I know someone who can.”
“Someone?” Edgeworth eyes widened in horror. “Not another…!?”
“Yeah, a fellow human. It’s Maya.” Phoenix clarified. “I mentioned her to you, the one who also helped me during my worst. She will help us.”
“She just got hurt by one and now you are suggesting she has to be near another!?”
“Listen, Blossom needs help! And I trust her – you learned to trust me, haven’t you? So trust me when I say that she’ll help us.”
Edgeworth shut his eyes tight. He had no choice – trusting Phoenix was something he didn’t have trouble with. And if it helps save Blossom…
“Very well. Call her.”
Phoenix nodded, rushing off to a place where he can get much better reception on his cell. He got on his small rubber boat and paddled as fast as he could, getting on land where there was a highway nearby. He dialed Maya’s number, pressing it over his ear as he felt his heart pounding a mile a minute.
(‘Pleasepickuppleasepickupplease-‘)
“Y’ello?”
“Maya!” Phoenix gasped out, relieved but still scared. “Thank god you picked up!”
“What’s wrong, Nick?” Maya sounded concerned.
“You remember that medicine you gave me the other day? I need some, right now, it’s an emergency!”
“Say what now? Did you fall again? Go to a hospital-”
“It’s not me! It’s someone important to me and she… she needs help!”
“But why not take her to the hospital?” Maya sounded a little skeptical. “Do you not have the cash?’
“Maya, I know it’s hard to explain but she cannot go to ANY hospital – she can’t be seen by anyone or it could pose danger for her!”
“Whoa, Nick! Are you harboring a criminal?!”
“No, that’s not it! Look, Maya, I’ll explain everything in detail when you arrive! I’ll even pay you if I need to!”
“Ugh, fine, fine!” Maya relented. “Where are you?”
“SunFlower ocean, near the entrance of the beach with that hot dog stand next to it.”
“Hold on now! I can get there in fifteen minutes if I drove… but I don’t have a license or car! If it’s an emergency, I can’t get there that fast on my own!”
“Mia, is she around!?”
“I’m currently staying with sis at her place but…”
“Perfect! She can drive you!”
“Nick, she’s gonna want to know why! She’s going to chew me out if she knows I shared a close kept secret!”
“I understand but a life may be on the line here! I’ll do anything, and I mean it, to make it up to you! …. Maya, please…!”
“Okay, okay, me and Mia will be there soon. Just stay where you are.”
She hung up and Phoenix could only wait now. Fifteen minutes still feels like forever but waiting was better than having no options.
He turned around to fetch Blossom, as he headed towards the water where his boat was waiting. He jumped when he saw Edgeworth crawling out of the water, onto the sand, holding Blossom with his one arm.
“Miles, what are you doing?! You could be seen!”
“I am NOT leaving her side! And if your humans are so trustworthy as you claim, then I have nothing to worry about, correct!?”
Phoenix had no rebuttal to that. He walked over to Edgeworth, picking him up in his arms, carrying him towards the beach entrance he described to Maya. Edgeworth was still heavy but he couldn’t allow that to slow him down right now, being glad that during nighttime, there is hardly anyone around in the beach. Thankfully, he saw no one tonight, he didn’t need any more complication added for the risk he was taking.
When he set Edgeworth down nearby the road, he looked over to Blossom with concern. She was breathing heavily, clearly scared and still likely in a lot of pain. Phoenix’s shirt acting like a bandage was only doing so much, wishing he could somehow do more to help her ease the pain.
“How’s she doing?”
“She’s holding on… I think.” Edgeworth swallowed hard. She wasn't crying anymore. He couldn’t tell if that was a good thing.
“How long, Phoenix?” Edgeworth asked.
“She said about fifteen minutes.”
Edgeworth gritted his teeth. Just like Phoenix, he felt that was too long given their situation. He needed to help his daughter somehow while waiting. Getting her to relax somehow. He could only think to hum a lullaby. He started off humming random songs he heard from Phoenix’s radio but he couldn’t think of anything calming due to the fact he only loved loud rock and pop songs.
He decided to hum randomly something that would sound soothing. As he did, he began to find a note that seemed familiar and began to follow it. And another. Almost without realizing it, he was humming a consisted tune. It was as if something deep in his brain reminded him of something long forgotten. Something he heard before. He eventually ended his humming, his eyes vacant.
“That’s a lovely melody. Where did you hear it?”
“From him.”
“Him? Him who?”
Edgeworth had answered without realizing, remembering an old lost song out of nowhere.
“Him… he hummed that tune to me to keep me calm… said he’ll protect me.” Edgeworth began rambling the words out from a memory that suddenly struck like a bolt of lightning. “There was so much blood….! He could still keep going but he was losing a lot, his wounds severe. I knew… I knew it would be too late for him… it might also be too late for her!”
“Miles, don’t say that!”
Phoenix didn’t know what Edgeworth was talking about – mostly, but he needed to keep Edgeworth emotions stable as he could clearly see he was on a verge of a panic attack.
“Miles, listen to me. Breathe in and out. Do you hear me? In… and out…”
Edgeworth followed his instructions. He had nothing else to lose and knew now was not the time to panic. He felt he couldn’t help it, remembering something traumatic – he didn’t want Blossom to experience the same thing. No, what he really wanted was for her to be okay. To live.
“Da…”
“It’s alright. I’ll protect you.” He echoed the same words said to him, looking into Blossom’s eyes.
“Miles…” Phoenix put his arm around Miles’ shoulder. He had no words to offer, just his presences, hoping it would be enough to help.
Minutes passed agonizingly slow but Phoenix jumped up immediately when he saw a familiar car coming down the road. He made himself known by flashing the light from his phone, the car slowing down and stopping right beside him. Edgeworth held Blossom protectively, wary but willing to try to trust the humans Phoenix was assuring him were trustworthy. He saw two women come out from the car, one that wore a strange outfit, the other clearly older and more sophisticated looking.
“Wright, who is the injured one?” Mia asked, clearly miffed at the circumstance (and Maya looking guilty in the background, likely having been chewed out by her sister during the car ride).
“Don’t try to freak out but… well, follow me.”
He led them to the boulder Edgeworth had been hiding behind so not to be seen by any unwanted party.
Mia stopped on her tracks; her eyes fixated at Edgeworth once she noticed him. Phoenix would have thought the obvious due to her seeing a merman but when she spoke, her words were unexpected.
“Miles…? Miles Edgeworth, is that really you?”
Chapter 5: Returning Home
Chapter Text
Phoenix and Edgeworth had to take a second to process what they heard. Edgeworth especially.
(‘How does she know my name?’)
The younger girl beside her took a good look before reacting too.
“Miley? Little Miley?” Maya gasped. “Oh my god, it is you! You’ve grown so much!”
“M-Miley???” Edgeworth stuttered out.
“I mean, it has to be you! You have the same hair and eyes, no one else I know has that look! Or a tail for that matter!”
Edgeworth was clearly taken aback by the women who claim to know him. Either way, he forced to disregard this confusing situation to focus back on what really mattered right now. Phoenix had the same thought as he spoke up before him.
“W-we need to heal her, quickly!”
Phoenix knelt next to Edgeworth, motioning to Blossom Edgeworth was still holding onto her, protectively. Maya eyes widened in shock when she finally took notice of the infant. Mia went ahead, already in professional mode, kneeling in front of Edgeworth to be on the same level with the child that needed tending.
“Let me see the injury.”
Edgeworth was still hesitant to let go of Blossom; Phoenix took notice and removed the torn shirt from her. Blossom let out a let out a painful squeal when the cold air hit her wound. Phoenix tried not to wince when he saw blood smeared everywhere. Mia remained professional and took hold of the medicine salve she brought. She rubbed in gently onto Blossom who was squirming in pain at first but after a few seconds, she blinked in confusion when she noticed that it didn’t hurt anymore.
“Gungh?” She gurgled, before smiling in relief.
“Thank goodness.” Phoenix let out an exhausted sigh that felt like it released all the anxiety he had been holding in.
Blossom seemed relaxed herself, then took notice of the two strangers in front of her, immediately burrowing herself into Edgeworth’s chest, clearly fearful.
“It’s alright, Blossom, they helped you.” Edgeworth whispered, though he himself still had his guard up.
“She’s cute, who is she?” Maya cooed. “No, wait, forget that right now! It’s been several years since we’ve seen or heard from you, Miley! We thought you were dead!”
Edgeworth just stared back at her, not knowing how to answer.
“You are Miles… right?” Maya grew concerned by Edgeworth’s silence.
“I am.” Edgeworth lowered his head slightly. “Apologizes. I lost my memories.”
“You WHAT!?” Maya gasped. “So you don’t remember us!?”
Edgeworth could only shake his head.
“Well, that certainly explains why you never came back.” Mia sighed. “It’s good to know you are still alive.”
“Came back?”
“You used to live with us at the Kurian Village.” Mia explained.
“Huh???” To say Phoenix was shocked was an understatement. “Miles came from Kurian Village?!”
“He didn’t exactly CAME from it…!” Maya tried her best to explain. “More like we took him in when he was a little kid.”
“Took me in…?” Edgeworth muttered, looking closely at the women. Perhaps… perhaps they do look a little familiar now that he’s focusing on them.
“I don’t get it. Not entirely.” Phoenix said, scratching his head.
“We can explain in more detail.” Mia interjected. “However, I’m not sure if we should hang around here out in the open.”
Right. Who knows if someone could just wander around or a random car pass by slowly to get a glimpse of Edgeworth and Blossom.
“Where to?” Phoenix asked.
“Back to the village, see if it could help jog Miles’ memory.” Mia glanced over at Edgeworth. “That is if you wish to?”
She knew it wouldn’t do good to try to force Edgeworth to come with them. Edgeworth himself was struggling with a decision. They were still strangers to him but they knew him! They knew his name and apparently they lived together? They did look trustworthy though. Phoenix trusts them. And they did save Blossom.
“Very well.” He agreed. “I would just like to know where I need to swim to.”
“Silly, you don’t need to swim to get to our village.” Maya smirked.
“In case you haven’t noticed, I cannot walk like your kind!” Edgeworth snapped.
“We do have a car.” Mia clarified.
Oh. That. Phoenix told him of different ways of transportations, and he did just witness it firsthand.
“That is if you don’t mind the fish smell.” Phoenix joked weakly.
“You’re one to talk.” Maya leaned over Phoenix and gave a quick sniff. “You have fish smell all over you.”
“Huh, I guess I do.” Phoenix had gotten used to the smell that he didn’t notice it anymore.
Mia had been observing the baby in Edgeworth’s arms, noticing how strongly she resembled Edgeworth. However what bothered her was how she also had a few features akin to Phoenix. She looked at the infant and back to Phoenix. Phoenix meanwhile picked Edgeworth back up, his legs trembling as he struggled to hold him since the sense of emergency was gone.
“Offf…! I’mma going to carry you into the backseat, okay?”
“Fine with me.” Edgeworth grunted. “As long as you don’t mind me smelling up the car with my fish scent!”
“Hey, come on, I was trying to lighten up the mood here.”
“Regardless, you will have to make it up to me with the finest dishes money can buy.”
“Aw man… can’t I just buy pudding from the convenient store? They’re plenty cheap AND super tasty. Heck, I’ll buy four!”
“Make it six.”
Mia felt her suspicions were confirmed, sensing their closeness.
(‘Did they…? Impossible…!’)
*
Mia took the wheel, driving to the road that led to her hometown. Maya would look at the backseat where Phoenix and Edgeworth sat, Edgeworth still holding Blossom protectively in his arms. Yet he was also staring out at the window in awe, seeing scenery up close as they passed different landscapes. Blossom would glance out the window too on occasion, curious but still a little scared of why she is in a moving box with strangers. Phoenix tried to calm her by reaching out to her but Blossom just flinched. Phoenix immediately withdrew his hand.
(‘Right… she was just attacked by a human…’)
It still hurt though the way she was staring at him with caution. He still wasn’t sure what fully happened but if a human harmed her, it is no wonder that her whole world has been turned upside down.
Maya tried to start a conversation, also strongly curious about Blossom.
“Soooooo…… who is the lil’ cutie? She kinda looks like you.”
“She is Blossom. My daughter.” Edgeworth answered honestly.
“Oh wow, your daughter?! You became a father – that’s amazing! That means you found a mate, I’m glad you weren’t alone! Where is she?”
“Uh, about that…” Phoenix had no idea how to explain this.
“He’s right here.” Again, Edgeworth answered without hesitation.
“Whua…?”
(‘So I was right.’) Mia sighed to herself.
“Hold on, hold on – Nick, you are Miles’ mate!? How!?”
“Well…” Phoenix tried to find the best way to describe. “You know how seahorses get pregnant?”
“Seahorses do NOT get pregnant!” Edgeworth corrected.
“Okay, so they don’t! But clearly you do so… close enough!”
Maya could only stare dumbfounded at the pair.
“You had sex with the fish man?” She asked bluntly.
“It was mating season!” Phoenix argued.
“And humans join in on that?”
“Why not!? Mermaids – I mean, merpeople are half human, yes?”
“Could you two settle down?” Mia spoke up. “We’re almost at the village.”
Edgeworth had to look. It was an old-fashioned looking village, nothing like the huge buildings he saw from Phoenix’s phone or magazine when he showed him parts of his city. But he felt a sense of comfort looking at it. He was… yes, he was here! There was the lake he sometimes swam in! The field where he sometimes ate outside with some of the other children of the village! The ocean located just outside the village…! Where he…
Where he……..
Edgeworth feelings were overwhelming causing him to faint.
*
‘I’ll protect you.’
He did. He did what he promised. And now he’s gone.
Edgeworth opened his eyes, tears trickling down. Remembering felt more like a curse than a blessing. Remembering someone important to him to be instantly hit with the fact that he’ll never see him again. It didn’t feel like closure nor relief.
“You’re awake.”
Edgeworth raised his head to see Mia before him. He rubbed his eyes to take a better look around him. He seemed to be inside a wooden house, strange trinkets decorated on the walls, almost engulfed in a large area of water. An old-fashioned soaking tub, he believes it’s called.
“Where is-”
He didn’t finish his question when he looked back down to see Blossom beside him, sleeping soundly but holding onto his arm. Phoenix had to be close by and sure enough, Phoenix was beside the tub on a futon, snoring away.
“Neither would leave your side for a second.” Mia explained. “I offered Phoenix a place to sleep but he chose this instead.”
Edgeworth couldn’t deny he felt touched. This is the many reasons why he loves-
No, he can’t think that!
“I let them sleep if I were you.” Mia says. “They have been waiting for you to wake up for so long that they didn’t get any rest.”
“How long was I out?”
“About a day.”
“I see.”
Yes, it might better to not disturb them. They looked completely exhausted. All because they were worried about him.
He glances up at Mia, knowing there is much they had to discuss.
“Miss Mia-”
“Just call me Mia.”
“Yes, that is the name I usually called you.”
Mia was still for a moment before sitting down on the edge of the enormous tub, facing him.
“You remember then?”
“Most of it… I think.” Edgeworth felt his head throbbing as everything that had been forgotten came back in a rush. “Maya has grown a lot since I have last seen her.”
“She has.” Mia acknowledged. “Though she still childish as ever.”
“Where is she?”
“She has gone to bed. She did check on you before she did though.”
Mia decided to change to conversation as she looked over at the sleeping Blossom.
“She was attacked by a human, yes?”
“Obviously.” Edgeworth nearly snapped. “Just like…!”
He flinched when he remembered something unpleasant.
“Just like your father.” Mia finished.
Edgeworth tried to contain his breathing. Yes, his father was the one who brought him here. He didn’t see the boat. He was harpooned, even if it scratched his upper body, it still should have killed him. There was blood everywhere!
Despite his injuries, his father scooped him into his arms and swam. All the while promising him that he’ll protect him. That everything is alright.
Before he knew it, he was somewhere he never was before. There were humans. His father said something to one of them. As his father handed him over to a human, he immediately slumped over, he had used the very last of his strength. Even as some of the women rushed over to him to try to help, Edgeworth knew it was too late. That his father was no longer breathing…
He choked, trying to contain his tears that threatened to fall again.
“I’m sorry.” Mia could only offer her words. “I suppose when you lost your memories, you have forgotten him as well.”
“My father… he always had poor eyesight.” Edgeworth said faintly. “It made him an easy target for larger prey or humans. Then it happened… but he did everything to bring me here. Why?”
“He might have known our history of our village.”
“The history?”
“The women of Kurian village have had many secrets from our past that we practiced and continue to even today. One of them had something to do with the medicine I used on your daughter.”
Edgeworth gasped. That’s right! The main ingredient for such medicine…
“A mermaid’s scale…”
“Or even from a merman.” Mia looked away from him, unable to face him out of guilt.
“My father offered his scales for my protection…”
His whole soul hurt. His father might have taken a risk, asking humans to look after him but Edgeworth was so young back then and couldn’t look after himself. He would have likely not survived on his own for long. His father took a gamble by exchanging what was valuable to the Kurian women, hoping they will keep their promise to look after him. But to do that, his father might have thought humans were redeemable. How did he get that idea? Did he know another human? How did he even knew about the medicine?
“… I… I don’t understand…”
“Neither did we.” Mia answered as if she knew exactly what he was thinking. “We did honor our promise and looked after you. I remember how feral you acted in the beginning but eventually came around. Especially when Maya sneaked into this hut which used to be your own house, giving you her snacks. You really enjoyed those.”
It was hazy but he did remember a little girl would hand him over the most delicious food he ever tasted. She would call him ‘Miley’. Edgeworth started to warm up to her and her older sister who would also join in with the late-night visits. For the few years he lived there, it wasn’t so bad. Dare he say, he learned to love living here. He would love to swim among the lake, even allowed to swim in the vast ocean. They had to carry him of course since it wasn’t an easy access like the lakes, but he loved the openness he could swim to, swim everywhere.
Then that one day, the weather changed drastically. It came almost out of nowhere as the clouds darkened. Before he knew it, he was swept away. And then…
“I forgot everything…!” He gasped out. “I could only remember being alone, in the middle of nowhere!”
“It was a typhoon. We had been careless since we didn’t live with modern technology as most of society did, so we had no sudden broadcast that could warn us about it. We waited, hoping you find yourself back home but when you never returned, me and Maya assumed the worst.”
Edgeworth during that time grew enough to be able to take care of himself. He just didn’t know why he understood or talked human language. When he came across other merpeople, as soon as he opened his mouth to speak, they were disgusted. He couldn’t explain why he knew the language but it didn’t matter as most didn’t want to be associated with him by this alone.
“Do you wish to discuss further?” Mia asked. She was full of questions on her own.
“Perhaps not now…” His head was starting to hurt again. “Not the past anyway…”
“Then if it’s alright, I want to know what happened to your daughter. How did it come to this?”
“She… she snuck away while Phoenix and I were asleep.” Edgeworth felt awful recalling it. “She was always curious and wanted to explore everything in the ocean even though we tried our best to keep an eye on her at all times. I woke up to find her gone. I searched the cave but when I knew she wasn’t there, I went searching in the ocean… I saw a fish boat… it seemed Blossom crawled into it to explore it but she was seen and was grabbed by that… human! She panicked and tried to bite him, and in turn I saw him stab her with that fish knife.”
Mia felt disturbed as she listened to Edgeworth’s recounting. His eyes looked pained; his voice filled with venom when he talked about the fisherman. That was twice a loved one of Edgeworth was attacked by humans.
“I jumped onto the boat and managed to scare the human who dropped Blossom. I grabbed her as fast as I could and swam away. Well, you obviously know the rest.”
Before he had been worried of ever being seen by other humans by chance but Phoenix assured him once if one or two humans see him by accident, who would honestly believe them if they went around and told everyone?
“Phoenix told me. He told also told me about your history together. I was surprised how he made it sound like you two were friends with benefits.”
“Hmph, why is that surprising?”
“I mean, besides having a child together, you two are very close from what I’ve seen so far.”
“Mating season can happen between strangers. It doesn’t always mean something greater like love.”
“You don’t think the man who has been by your side day and night does not have strong feelings like love for you?”
Edgeworth stared back down at Phoenix, still snoring but close as he could be to Edgeworth without getting wet. His heart skipped a beat.
“Is that what you believe?”
“Don’t you?”
*
Sunlight from the window was shining onto Phoenix. He grunted, annoyed as he tried to cover his eyes.
“What a way to start the day…” He grumbled.
“What’s wrong with nice weather?”
Phoenix woke up right away when he heard Edgeworth’s voice.
“You’re awake!?”
“It would appear so.”
His sarcasm was unexpectedly met with a bear hug.
Phoenix held Edgeworth tightly, making Edgeworth feel like his breath was being taken away. And not because Phoenix was squeezing him. He considered hugging back but by then, Phoenix let go, much to his disappointment.
“Geez, you scared me, you know? I was getting especially worried when you wouldn’t wake up.”
“I was feeling overwhelmed when I began to remember my past.”
“You remember?” Phoenix was stunned.
“Most of it.”
Edgeworth told Phoenix about his past, his father, and how he came to live in this village.
“So that’s how it was. I can see why it was too much for you.” Phoenix placed a hand over Edgeworth’s. “How are you feeling?”
Edgeworth’s words were caught in his throat. Since Mia suggested Phoenix held love for him, Edgeworth felt longing to be touched by him.
“Miles?”
“Yes, I feel… well, I’m not sure.”
(‘We’ve cuddled, right? Can we do that again?’)
“Da!”
Edgeworth’s thoughts were interrupted when Blossom who just woke up, happy to see her dad awake. She hugged him closely, as Edgeworth returned it, smiling at her.
“Can you please look after Blossom?”
“Sure? But where are you going?”
“My father…”
Phoenix didn’t ask him to explain since Mia filled him in before. They made a gravestone for him, and no doubt Edgeworth wanted to see it.
“Yeah, I’ll be here when you get back.”
He needed to spend some time with Blossom as she still seemed wary of him. Phoenix needed to break the ice with her and needed Maya’s help with this.
*
“Is it done?”
“Yep, fresh from the oven – the best chocolate chip cookies she’ll ever taste!”
“No doubt. It’ll be the first she’d ever taste.”
Maya smiled as she showed Blossom the plate of cookies, letting her get a good look. She leaned forward a little, smelling the freshly baked cookies. She licked her lips, looking at Maya cautiously. She didn’t seem dangerous and those round shapes did look tasty…….
Blossom snatched the cookie and dived under to snack on it. She came back up quickly, spitting out the soggy cookie. She glared at Maya.
“Of course you won’t like it if you get it wet.” Maya sighed.
“Look, Blossom.” Phoenix picked up a cookie, holding it in front of her before eating it. “Mmmm, it’s delicious when it’s dry and crunchy.”
Blossom watched him carefully before reaching out for another cookie. She ate it this time without going underwater, watching her father enjoying his. It didn’t take long for her to devour the entire plate of cookies.
“See, much tastier now, isn’t it?” Phoenix said.
Blossom picked up the now empty plate and banged it on the edge of the tub, demanding more.
“I think she’s opening up.” Maya beamed proudly.
“Yeah. If foods involved. You might wanna get more cookies.”
“I’m outta cookies but I have some fruit tarts that are crazy tasty.”
“That’ll do. If you can get some…”
“Okie dokie.”
Maya left, leaving Phoenix alone with his daughter. She was busy licking the plate to pay much attention.
“Hey, Blossom.” Phoenix tried starting a conversation. “You think you’ll like it here?”
Blossom just stared at him.
“I’d feel better knowing you and your father be safe together. I no longer have to worry. Maybe I can sleep better back at home now.”
She titled her head, as if she trying to understand.
“Home, huh? I started thinking that damp cave had become my home.”
(‘I know that it couldn’t last. At least things didn’t end in tragedy.’)
“I know this world must be confusing for you. I think this might be true for everyone. I just want you to know, I would never hurt you. You are my daughter and you mean everything to me.”
He suddenly had an idea that could help with Blossom open up to him again.
“Here, you can pull on my hair if you like.”
Phoenix leaned his head forward where his spikes were up for grabs for Blossom. Nothing happened at first, Phoenix sighing inward and about to sit upright.
“Ouch!”
Phoenix hair was pulled suddenly followed by an amused giggle.
“I guess we’re cool.” He let out a laugh, his soul feeling like a heavy burden was finally lifted.
Phoenix picked her up and hugged her. Much to her surprise, she stopped trying to reach for his hair, returning the hug. Phoenix felt his heart elated.
“Yeah, you’re going to be fine. We’re going to be fine.”
*
“Are you feeling alright?” Mia asked.
“I don’t know.” Edgeworth answered honestly.
He was led to the grave where his father was buried. Though she probably didn’t need to as Edgeworth had remembered the location. As a child and during his young teen years, Edgeworth visited the gravestone many times. He felt he was close to his father whenever he near the grave. He wondered if his father knew that he was doing alright. Would he have liked Phoenix? He had no doubt he would have loved Blossom.
“Blossom... she was saved by her grandfather…”
“Miles?”
“He offered his scales for my protection… that salve that you used, its main ingredient was my father’s scale, am I correct?”
Mia looked a little guilty. She felt bad that the women in the village took most of the merman’s scales, feeling his body should have remained untouched for burial. However, it had been decided that they will take most of it as the medicine was deemed useful should an emergency occur. Luckily the one in charge (which was her own mother, who luckily had always been generous and kind) made sure that Edgeworth would be taken in and be treated well, not in anyway to be something to be used as a ‘harvest’ in the future as she believed they had more than enough scales for their medicine. She also made sure Edgworth’s father would get a proper burial. One his son would go to frequently.
“I’m sorry, it must have deeply hurt you what the village did.”
“You don’t need to apologize. He did give permission. And it ended up saving my daughter… he would have wanted that.”
He placed his hand on the tombstone, seeing it was still well taken care of. It hadn’t been abandoned even when he was gone. He and his father were never an afterthought. And he wasn’t alone anymore.
Despite this, Edgeworth hung his head low as tears welling in his eyes once again, experiencing the hurt he knew would never go away.
*
“A. B. C.” Maya sat on the edge of tub, reading a basic letter and numbers book. “Can you repeat that, Blossom?”
“Ab!” She announced proudly.
“Well, almost.” Maya showed her to book so she can see the letters. “See?”
Edgeworth felt a sudden familiarity.
"You helped me learn your language the same way.”
“You remember!” Maya said ecstatically. “I was still learning words and spelling and thought we could do it both together.”
“Your sister would get mad when you accidentally teach me the wrong way to spell and write.”
“As I said, I was still learning!” Maya huffed. “But yeah, I’m glad you’re back and alive and healthy. When you were swept away, I thought…”
“I apologize.” Edgeworth murmured.
“No, it’s not your fault! No one ever considered the thought you might have lost your memories!” Maya let out a small sigh. “I am so glad you met Nick. Otherwise we might have never seen or heard from you again.”
“You have a part to play on that.” Edgeworth pointed out. “If you didn’t break the village rules, Phoenix would not have thought of calling you.”
“Yes, that.” Maya giggled. “I got in so lot of trouble with sis first when I had to tell her about the strange phone call. But since it ended up reuniting with you, I was pretty much let off the hook.”
She smiled over to Blossom.
“Plus, we now have another friend. And an adorable one at that!”
She picked up the book again, going back to teaching Blossom.
“Look, you know this one.” Maya said as she showed a picture of a fish. “It’s a fish. A fiiieesh!”
“Fishie.” Blossom says proudly.
“Oh my god…!” Maya was amazed. “Her first word!!!”
“I believe her first word was Da.”
“Hey, don’t ruin this moment for me!”
Phoenix had just came in during the commotion, not wanting to miss out even though he had phone calls to make to his boss on why he couldn’t go back to work right now.
“Blossom said her first word, did I hear that right!?”
“It wasn’t her first word.” Edgeworth clarified.
“Oh will you stop being such a spoilsport!” Maya scolded.
Phoenix ignored them as he crouched over the large tub, facing Blossom up close.
“Can you say, dada, honey? Say ‘dada’.”
“Da!”
Blossom reached out to him… and grabbed his spikes.
“Ow! Again!?”
“It was your fault for giving her permission in the first place.” Edgeworth chuckled.
“At least she said it.” Phoenix sighed, tears in his eyes from pride and pain from his daughter. “Truly a smart kiddo we got there.”
“Aww, you guys are such an adorable family!” Maya cooed.
(‘Family?’) Edgeworth felt strange as it didn’t seem to occur to him until Maya mentioned it. (‘Are the three of us… family?’)
He watched Phoenix struggling with Blossom taking joy at the hair pulling, he ended up getting lost in his own world. Together, the three of them, always together… should he risk it?
*
Edgeworth was staring at his father’s grave for a long time while trying to make a decision. He had been visiting the grave every day so far, paying respects to the man he had forgotten. Even if he was swamped with painful memories, his father didn’t deserve to be forgotten. Sometimes he would talk to the stone in front of him, as if he could still hear him. Mia told him that isn’t unusual as many humans do that too.
‘And who knows. Maybe they can hear us.’ She added.
“Father… I want to stop denying my feelings. Should I stop being a coward and just tell him?”
No answer. Not that he expected one. However, he could picture his father’s warm smile in his mind.
Edgeworth crawled back into the lake and swam back to the other side of the village. As long there were no outside visitors, Edgeworth was allowed to swim where he pleases (though he was told not to go to the ocean unless the people in the village were absolutely SURE that there were no upcoming storms coming. Not that he could blame them.)
Since he lived here before, he was almost overwhelmed how everyone in this small village welcomed him back and treated his presences like it was completely normal. There had been plenty of women who were cooing over Blossom like Maya does, giving him mixed feelings. He hates humans. Or maybe he used to? It just felt strange to live your life to shun an entire species to now live among them like it was no big deal. With most of his memory back, though still hazy, he knew the way he was being treated wasn’t different. It still felt like a new experience though.
But if he is going to live here once again, for the sake of his daughter at the very least, he wanted the one human that really mattered to be part of it. The question is, would he?
Phoenix had been here for nearly a month but now he was talking about going back to his own place. He still had a job and he lamented he used up the last of his vacation days so he can’t put it off anymore. Would he gone for days, weeks even?
“Hey, Miles!”
Speaking of Phoenix, he caught sight of Edgeworth swimming and waved to him to get his attention. Edgeworth swam up to him as Phoenix crouched down to talk to him.
“You seem to be settled in already.”
“It’s nice.”
“And safer for you and Blossom. I can finally sleep well when I’m back in my own bed.”
“The one far from here?”
“Well, it’s not THAT far…” Phoenix tried to justify.
He would have to take a bus or his bike but it was farther than the ocean where they'd used to meet. And after he gets out of work, going to Kurian village he might arrive at sundown so that leaves not that much time to stick around to hang out. At best he could do was weekends if he doesn’t get surprised with more work, which was better than nothing. He explained it to Edgeworth but he still didn’t look satisfied by this. Phoenix wasn’t satisfied either but what else can he do?
“Will you be with me and Blossom?”
“Of course, I’ll stop by to visit. I’ll come as often as I can, promise.”
“No. I don’t want visits.”
“… Miles?”
“I want something more.” Edgeworth leaned towards Phoenix, placing his hand on the man's face. No more ignoring it, he is going to be honest. “I want you to stay… by my side with our child. Because I have… what I’m trying to tell you is I am in-”
Phoenix became startled all the sudden. His eyes were no longer looking at Edgeworth but off in a distance. His face itself was of pure shock.
“I-impossible!” He gasped. “S-she’s dead…! How!?”
Edgeworth turned his head to the direction Phoenix was staring. There across the lake stood a young petite woman with long black hair. She didn’t seem to notice either of them yet but it appeared like she was looking for someone. Phoenix jumped up, rushing towards this woman.
Edgeworth hand now felt empty, the lingering warmth from Phoenix being the only thing left behind.
