Chapter 1: L.Prologue – The Abandoned Child+L.Chapter 1 – The Diary
Chapter Text
L.Prologue – The Abandoned Child
Rain lashed against the cobblestone streets, the night swallowing the city in a haze of silver and shadow. Two figures, a man and a woman, darted through the alleys, their cloaks soaked through. The woman clutched a woven basket to her chest, her violet hair plastered to her face. Inside, a tiny child slept fitfully, unaware of the storm, both outside and within her parents’ hearts.
- You think this is the right idea? – the woman’s voice trembled.
- Trust me. We can’t keep her. Not with what’s coming.
The woman’s grip tightened.
- But… she’s our daughter.
- And that’s why she has to stay. – he said softer. – With them.
The woman hesitated, then nodded, her breath hitching. They stopped before a modest house, its windows glowing faintly with candlelight.
- Here. I know this family. They’re kind… she’ll be safe.
- Don’t cry. – the man squeezed her shoulder. – Let her last memory of you be a smile.
The woman swallowed hard, then knelt, placing the basket gently on the doorstep. Inside, the baby stirred, her violet hair, just like her mother’s, peeking from the blankets.
- I’m sorry I’m leaving you, little storm. – she choked. – But we will meet again. Promise.
- Good luck, kid.
The woman pressed a kiss to the baby’s forehead, her lips lingering.
- I’m sorry… Liliac.
With one last look, she knocked, then vanished into the night with the man, their footsteps lost in the rain.
The door creaked open. A middle-aged woman peered out, squinting into the darkness.
- Hello? Is anyone—
A tiny wail cut her off. Her gaze dropped to the basket. Inside, the baby screamed, her tiny fists flailing.
- Oh, you poor thing!
She scooped the child up, her fingers brushing against a folded slip of paper in the basket. Unfolding it, she found a single word scrawled in elegant script:
"Liliac."
From inside the house, a man’s voice called:
- Marina? What is it?
The woman cradled the baby close, her heart pounding.
- Vlad… we’ve got a baby here.
L.Chapter 1 – The Diary
Date: [14.04.1239] | Weather: Sunny (but my hair’s still a mess!)
Helloooo, Diary! It’s me again, Lily! ✨
Okay, okay, yesterday was kinda rough. Had a mission with some rookies from the guild. Fun? Yeah! Scary? A little. We lost a few people… those besy pack a punch, huh? But hey, that’s why they pay me the big coins! *flips hair dramatically*
Wait, what’s that look? Ohhh, you wanna ask about my parents? Fine! They’re the sweetest! Mom’s always fussing over my hair (‘Lily, that rogue strand won’t tame itself!’), and Dad? Super duper softie. But ever since I joined the guild, they’ve been… quiet. Like, too quiet. I keep telling them, ‘I’ve got this!’ but they just nod and hug me extra tight. Weird, right?
BUT! My little bro Ilya? He’s obsessed! Says he’ll be a merc just like me when he grows up. CUTE, RIGHT?! And Sasha, ugh, my ‘wise’ big sis (24 going on 100), keeps nagging me to quit and be her seamstress apprentice. ‘Stabbing fabric is safer than stabbing monsters, Lily!’ Pfft. Boring! Besides, my paychecks? Fat. Mom’s gonna pop another baby soon (fourth kid, can you believe her stamina?!), and guess who’s buying the tiny booties? This gal.
Oh! Dad’s visiting tomorrow! Gonna shove my earnings in his face and watch his eyes go dinner-plate huge. Hehe.
Hmm… what else? *pokes lone rogue hair* Nope. Brain empty. Welp, that’s a wrap, Mr. Diary! Tomorrow’s another monster-slaying, coin-stacking, family-annoying day!
Later, loser! (Just kidding. Love you.)
Chapter 2: Family Bond(s)
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 2 – Family Bond(s)
The guild hall buzzed with chatter and clinking mugs when the door swung open. A broad, mustached man stepped inside, his bald head glistening under the lantern light. Lily, mid-sip of her orange juice, spotted him instantly.
- PAPA!
She launched herself from her seat, nearly toppling her drink as she barreled into Vlad’s arms. Vlad chuckled, wrapping her in a bear hug.
- Lily! I’m so glad to see you. Privet, my little daughter.
Lily sniffed the air dramatically, then gasped.
- What’s this? Is that… extra-spicy snacks I smell?
- Indeed it is! – Vlad grinned, pulling a wax-paper bundle from his coat. – Here.
Lily clutched the snacks like treasure.
- You’re the best, Papa! – her grin softened. – But… why now? Don’t get me wrong, I’m super duper happy! Just… curious.
- You left home three months ago. – Vlad’s expression turned serious. – Only visited once, two weeks after signing that guild contract. Just letters since then. – he ruffled her hair. – I worried.
Lily blinked, then laughed.
- Ah! I see! Papa’s less tense now. Does that mean you accept my merc life?
- I do. – Vlad sighed. – Your mother? Still processing. But she’s… getting there.
- Tell Mama I’m fine. – Lily squeezed his arm. – And this! – she yanked a jingling gold pouch from her pocket. – Is proof! Five demon hunts’ worth. See? I’m thriving.
- I—I can’t take this much—
- Take it. – Lily pressed it into his palm, her voice gentle but firm. – For Mama. For all of you.
A pause. Then. Vlad laughed, pocketing the gold.
- Hah! Fine. But you’ve been a bad influence on Ilya. Kid won’t stop begging to join the guild.
- And you don’t sound half as upset as you pretend, Papa.
- Maybe. Because you’re also a good example. I’m proud of you, Lily. Even if it’s dangerous.
- Hehe! – Lily’s rogue hair bounced as she beamed. – AH! – she grabbed his hand, tugging him toward the door. – Let’s walk! Chat properly!
- Yes, my daughter.
The second floor of the guild bar was quieter, dimly lit by flickering lanterns. Violet and Veles sat at a corner table, their hoods lowered, drinks untouched. Violet swirled her glass absently.
- So… still no clue where to find them?
- Nah. – Veles leaned back, his crimson eyes scanning the room. – It’s like they exist somewhere in Nav’… yet I don’t feel them. Nowhere.
- Chernobog’s giving me trouble even after death. His wife, huh? You think she’s just vengeful?
- I wouldn’t say just. – Veles smirked. – Knew their family a little. Enough to know she was the dominant one, not him.
- Femdom, huh? Yeah. Sounds about right. – she took a sip, then grimaced. – For now, let’s focus on her minions in Yav’. Only lead we’ve got.
- Unfortunately. – Veles sighed. – Asked Perun too, still nothing.
A pause. Violet’s gaze drifted downward, a crowd-filled first floor was the only thing she saw.
- Hah. Not a day without thinking of her?
- Of course not. We don’t even know if she’s alive. Maybe her family kicked her out. Maybe she’s on the streets, begging—
- We’ll find our daughter after. – Veles cut her off. – Focus.
Violet exhaled sharply.
- You think she’s figured it out yet? That they’re not her real parents?
- Violet. Enough.
- But what if it breaks her—
Veles leaned forward, his tone low but unyielding.
- It won’t. She’s strong. Like her mother.
A beat. Violet’s shoulders slumped.
- Veles…
Veles stood, tossing coins on the table.
- For now, we do what’s required of us.
Chapter 3: Awakening
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 3 – Awakening
The guild buzzed with activity as Lily approached the front desk, her rogue hair bouncing with each step. Behind the counter, Tanya, a stout woman with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense bun, looked up from her ledger.
- Oh, if it isn’t Lily again? Here for another mission?
- Hello, Aunt Tanya! Yep! Though Papa asked me to take it easy today. Got anything simple? Goblins? Hounds? Maybe some pesky rats?
- Hah. Lucky you. Just got a report, pack of acid-spitting hounds in the caves near Brin Village. Nasty, but nothing you can’t handle. – she jerked her thumb toward a corner. – Team’s already forming. They need one more.
- Horosho, boss! – Lily saluted. – Consider it done!
In the dim corner of the guild hall, five men huddled over a map. Their leader, a grizzled man with a scar across his nose, looked up as Lily approached.
- Excuse me, good sirs! Heard you need an extra blade?
The Commander, Artyom, studied her, brow furrowed.
- Ah, we do. Though… your face is new. First time seeing you.
- Heh, yeah. – Lily rubbed her neck sheepishly. – Only been here three months. Still a rookie, sorry!
- No worries. – Artyom chuckled. – We’ll take the help. Ready to move?
Lily nodded eagerly.
The cave stank of damp fur and acid. The hounds, sleek, black-furred beasts with glowing green saliva, snarled from the shadows.
- This wave should be the last of them!
Lily didn’t wait. She lunged, her movements a blur of violet and steel. First hound got a slash across its throat, dodged the spray of acid. Rolled under its pounce, driving her sword up through another’s belly. She somersaulted over a volley of acid, landing behind it, decapitation in one swing.
The cave was silent except for the drip of acid and the rasping breaths of the fallen hounds. Lily wiped her blade clean, grinning at the pile of corpses.
- Scoreboard! I got more kills than you, boss! Does that mean extra reward?
Artyom laughed, but there was no warmth in it.
- Haha. I guess you do.
- Well then, we should—
Two figures stepped into the cave entrance, blocking the light. Lily’s grip tightened on her sword.
- What? Are there more hounds?
Then Artyom’s face twisted. His skin split, his bones cracked, his form contorting into something grotesque. The other men followed, their bodies shrinking, their features sharpening. Goblins. Their grins were too wide, too hungry. Lily backpedaled, her breath coming in short gasps.
- N-No…
They lunged. She swung wildly, but her blade only grazed them, their hides were tougher than hounds’. A fist slammed into her face.
She hit the ground, vision swimming. The creatures crowded around her, claws tearing at her clothes, their laughter guttural, wrong. Lily screamed.
- NO! PLEASE! HELP ME—!
Silence. Then.
BOOM!
A crimson aura exploded from her body, throwing the monsters back like ragdolls. Lily stood, her body trembling, no, changing. Her violet hair bled into crimson at the tips. Her eyes burned brighter, the red deepening to an otherworldly glow. A katana materialized in her outstretched hand, its edge humming with power. Lily stared at it, horrified.
- What… is this..?
No time. The creatures scrambled up, snarling. She moved. One vanished, his head tumbling from his shoulders before he hit the ground. The others froze, then ran. Lily’s eyes locked onto them. One. Two. Three. Four. None made it to the entrance. Silence. Her chest heaved, the adrenaline fading, and with it, the power.
Her hair lightened, the katana dissolving into smoke. Lily collapsed, the world blurring, her limbs heavy. The last thing she saw. A woman’s silhouette, stepping from the shadows.
Lily’s eyes fluttered open. Sunlight. She lay beneath the lone tree outside the cave, a thick blanket draped carefully over her torn clothes. The air smelled of grass and distant rain.
- What… happened?
She sat up, wincing. No wounds, just stiffness, as if she’d fought for hours. Her hands trembled.
- Was it a dream?
She closed her eyes, reaching for that strange power.
FWOOM!
A weaker burst of crimson aura flickered around her, then faded. Lily gasped.
- I don’t understand… What is this? – her mind raced. – Papa… He might know.
But first, clothes.
Lily shuffled into the guild hall, the blanket clutched around her like a cloak. Tanya nearly dropped her ledger.
- Oh, what’s this, Lily? You look— Wait, why the blankets?!
- About that… – Lily grinned sheepishly. – Got any spare clothes?
Tanya sighed, waving her toward the back.
- Come on.
Changed into a fresh tunic, Lily slumped at a table across from Tanya. Tanya leaned in.
- Calmed down yet?
Lily took a deep breath, then beamed, her usual cheer returning.
- Yup! All good!
- So. – Tanya arched a brow. – What happened?
- Turns out those guys were goblin shapeshifters. – Lily shrugged. – Attacked me in the cave. Then. My body felt weird. Like this.
Without warning, she flared her aura, violet hair bleeding crimson, eyes glowing like embers. Tanya jerked back.
- Woah! What the—?!
Lily dropped the transformation, grinning.
- No clue! Feels super duper cool, though. Kinda dangerous too. – she drummed her fingers. – Oh! About the reward…
- What, you want pay for all six since nobody survived?
- Pretty please? – Lily clasped her hands.
- Hah! Fine, you greedy girl. – her expression sobered. – Those men… They’d come before. Always took a sixth member who never returned. I’ll report it, but expect the guards to question you.
- After dinner! – she hopped up. – Gonna head home. Show off my new tricks to the family!
- Poka, Lily…
Chapter 4: The Truth Unfolds
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 4 – The Truth Unfolds
Lily burst through the door, her rogue hair strand bouncing wildly.
- Mama! Papa! Guess what?!
Her parents exchanged a glance, Marina’s hands frozen mid-stitch, Vlad lowering his newspaper.
- Lily? I just saw you yesterday. Thought you’d stay at the guild longer.
Lily twirled, her grin infectious.
- Changed my mind! Besides, Mama missed me, right?
Marina set aside her sewing, eyes scanning Lily for injuries.
- I see you’re safe.
- Yup! – Lily clapped her hands. – And I’ve got a super duper cool trick to show you! Ready?
Before they could react, she snapped her fingers.
FWOOOSH!
Her violet hair bled crimson at the tips, her eyes igniting like embers. The air hummed with energy.
- Cool, isn’t it?!
But her parents weren’t smiling. Marina reached for Vlad’s hand. A silent conversation passed between them.
- Lily… we need to talk.
- Sit down, please.
Lily’s aura flickered out.
- Is… something wrong? I thought you’d be excited—
Marina guided her to the couch, their knees touching.
- Lily… my dear… – she took a shaky breath. – Your real parents… they left you. Sixteen years ago, on a rainy night, someone knocked. When I opened the door… it was just you. In a basket. With a note that said… Liliac. These powers…we suspected as much for some reason…but you inherited them from someone strong…dangerous…
Silence.
Vlad rubbed his neck.
- We never wanted to lie. We took you in because—
Lily lowered her head. A single tear splashed onto her lap.
-...yeah. I kinda… felt it. – her voice was small. – My hair. My eyes. Ilya and Sasha got yours. But me? I just… didn’t. – she wiped her face. – But I never cared. Because you loved me. And I love you.
- Oh, Lily…
Lily clung to her, voice muffled against her shoulder.
- Don’t say you’re not my real parents. You are. The ones who left me? They’re the villains. But you? – she pulled back, gripping their hands. – You raised me. Fed me. Fought for me. That’s real. And I’m your daughter. Always.
Vlad’s eyes glistened. He cupped her face.
- We do love you. That won’t ever change. Thank you… for feeling the same.
- You…do be careful with these new powers. …we don’t know where they came from.
- I will, Mama!
Chapter 5: L.Chapter 5 – THE Legend+L.Chapter 5x – Violet
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 5 – THE Legend
Lily rubbed her shoulder as she stepped into the guild hall, still buzzing from her recent encounter with the shapeshifting goblins. The scent of ale and roasted meat filled the air, but before she could take another step.
Thud.
She collided with someone. Hard.
- Ow! Watch your step!
She looked up and froze. The woman before her had violet hair, sharp green eyes, and that same damn rogue strand sticking up defiantly. Something about her was… familiar.
- Did we… meet somewhere?
Violet kept her face blank, her voice steady.
- I don’t think so. – a pause. – You’re the girl who reported the shapeshifter goblins, aren’t you?
- Yeah, but—
- I’m not police, but I deal with things like that. Mind telling me what happened?
Lily huffed but smirked.
- Sure, I suppose. But you buy me a drink as compensation!
- Sure thing, kid.
They settled at a corner table, Lily already animated, waving her hands as she spoke.
- Well, it was actually nothing special at first. I just went with them like nothing was wrong. We took care of the hounds, and then boom! Humans turning into goblins! Can you imagine that?
- Not that uncommon.
- Well, maybe for you. – Lily leaned forward. – But it was my first time! And then… – without hesitation, she snapped her fingers. Her hair turned violet-crimson with red aura around her. – I felt… strange. Like this.
Violet didn’t flinch. Her eyes remained locked on Lily, unreadable.
- That is strange. But it’s the least of what I’m interested in.
- And then I passed out. Woke up like nothing happened.
- I see. Was expecting more, but that’ll work for now. Thank you, Lily.
- What? – Lily’s eyes widened. – How do you know my name?
- Tanya mentioned it. – she turned to leave, then paused. – May we meet again.
And just like that, she was gone. Lily stared after her, her rogue strand twitching in confusion.
- Who the hell was that woman?
Tanya, the guild receptionist, sidled up to Lily, who was still staring at the door where Violet had disappeared.
- Say, Aunt Tanya… did you see that woman before?
Tanya chuckled, wiping a tankard with her apron.
- Ah, her? I’m surprised you didn’t recognize her. That’s Mrs. Violet, the Guardian of Yav’.
Lily froze. Then.
- WAIT. YOU DON’T MEAN TO SAY I JUST TALKED WITH THE LEGENDARY VIOLET?! – her voice cracked. – Oh no, no, no, I made her buy me a drink! I was so rude! Now she’ll never talk to me again!
- Hehe, you seem… excited.
- Of course I am! – Lily clutched her hair, her rogue strand bouncing wildly. – There are legends about her! She came to this world, crushed Chernobog’s tyranny, vanished, then came back and forced Perun into peace! That can’t be her!
- I’m afraid it can. – Tanya shrugged.
- That’s where I’ve seen her before, the statues! When I was little, Mama read me fairy tales about her. This stupid rogue strand? – she flicked it. – I love it because it’s just like hers! Though Mama always hated it…
- I see. Well, speaking of legends. – she pulled out a mission scroll. – I actually came over for a reason. There’s a group outside short a swordfighter. Their usual got sick. Wanna tag along?
- Sounds familiar. – Lily narrowed her eyes. – Are you trying to get me killed?
- Hehe, no. They’re fine. Promise.
- Then I’m in!
At the guild’s exit, a group of adventurers huddled near the gate. Lily bounded over, her crimson eyes bright.
- Heya, guys! Tanya said you need an extra blade. Mind if I tag along?
The commander, a broad-shouldered man with a scarred cheek, turned.
- Ah, but of course. My name is Vova. And you are?
- Liliac! – Lily grinned. – But everyone just calls me Lily.
- Lily… hmm. – Vlad raised an eyebrow. – That’s quite a foreign name for these parts.
- Heh, didn’t get to choose. – Lily shrugged, her rogue strand bobbing.
- Fair enough. Ready to move out, Lily?
- Born ready!
Violet watched from the rooftop as Lily departed with the adventuring party, her arms crossed tightly. Veles materialized beside her in a swirl of shadow.
- What, finally found her?
Violet sighed, her green eyes tracking Lily's retreating form.
- I wish I could actually talk to her normally. Instead I was cold as the Nav' wastes. Maybe next time.
- And the mission? Learn anything useful from our daughter?
- Nothing new. Just rogue demons who got what they deserved. – she absentmindedly tapped her fingers against her bicep.
- You watched her fight them, didn't you? – Veles’s grin widened. – Waiting for her powers to awaken.
- Shut up. – Violet snapped, but there was no heat in it. – I did what I had to. Though...I didn't even know it was her at first. Just followed my instincts. – her voice softened. – She's got my power, that's for certain. How are you handling this, Liliac?
Meanwhile, Lily hummed a jaunty guild tune as she followed Vova's party into the cavern. The melody echoed strangely off the damp stone walls. Vova raised a fist, signaling halt.
- Lizardfolk nest ahead. Stay sharp.
As they advanced, the tunnel brightened with bioluminescent fungi. Shadows suddenly detached from the walls, six lizard warriors brandishing crude swords and shields.
One charged Vova, who blocked with his shield and ran the creature through. Lily drew her katana with a metallic whisper.
- Hehe, let's go Mr. Katana. – she murmured, giving the blade an experimental twirl. – Though I suppose you need a proper name. How about...Rising Star? – she beamed at the weapon. – I knew you'd like it! Violet's sword is Shooting Star, so we're keeping with tradition!
Without waiting for response, Lily blurred into motion. Her movements were liquid grace, ducking under swings, pivoting past defenses. Each strike was economical: a slash to the hamstring, a thrust between ribs. Her rogue strand danced wildly as she flowed from opponent to opponent. The last lizardman fell with a gurgle. Lily flicked blood from her blade with a practiced motion.
- Phew! Job well done, partner. – she said, patting the katana's hilt.
- Impressive, Lily. – Vova wiped his brow, eyeing the carnage. – You make veterans look slow.
- What can I say? I'm just that good!
- With these monsters cleared, the trade route should be safe. Let's head back.
Lily bounced on her toes.
L.Chapter 5x – Violet
The guild hall buzzed with activity around them, but at their corner table, an awkward silence stretched between Violet and Lily. Violet leaned against the wall, arms crossed, while Lily stared with starstruck eyes, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her tunic.
-...you called me for a reason, right? – Violet raised an eyebrow.
Lily jolted as if shocked.
- Ah! Oops! S-sure! Right. Prostite! – she bowed her head slightly, her rogue strand bobbing comically.
Violet's expression remained unreadable as Lily barreled on:
- The last time we met I was so rude! I didn't realize you were Violet. Not just some random woman, but THE Violet. The Legendary Violet!
- It happens.
- I mean you're Violet! – Lily's hands fluttered excitedly. – THE Violet! When I was little, Mama read me stories about you every night! You're so cool! – she leaned forward, crimson eyes shining. – Tell me! I want to hear it from you personally, when you came here to slay Chernobog, what was it really like?
- Actually? It was one of the hardest challenges of my life. – she absently traced the rim of her mug. – I came here without the powers I have now, just a human, like you. Well, still am, just...with extras. – a wry smile. – Had to fight through ten floors of that bastard's tower. Nearly died a dozen times, but I made a friend down there, one of Chernobog's own demons turned ally. Though couldn’t do it without Perun’s spear.
- Perun's spear? – Lily gasped. – You mean Gromovik? But the legends never mention that! I thought you only used your sword!
- Hah! If it wasn't for Gromovik, there wouldn't be any legend at all. – her smile faded. – Nearly died that day. But here I am.
- What happened after? – Lily practically vibrated with excitement. – After you left Yav'?
- Then? Went home...saw my parents die. Came back here for revenge.
- That's cruel...
- Eh. – Violet shrugged. – It is what it is. After that, I traveled other worlds. Had some fun, settled political disputes, tested my new powers... – her voice softened. – Adopted a daughter. Iris. She's probably missing me right now...
- But why did you leave her? – Lily tilted her head.
- Because I'm needed here more. – Violet's fingers tightened around her mug. – ...though that would make me a bad mother.
Lily slammed her hands on the table, making the dishes rattle.
- No, you're not! That Iris girl is probably proud to have a legend as her mother! I know I would be!
- You think so?
- Well duh! – Lily threw her arms wide. – You're Violet! THE Legend. How could anyone be sad about that? Shame on Iris if she thinks otherwise!
- Heh. You're a funny one.
Lily's face went scarlet.
- AH! AH! AH! VIOLET HERSELF PRAISED ME! AHHHH! – she clutched her cheeks. – I think I'm gonna melt into a puddle right here!
- You know...you kinda remind me of someone. But that's a story for another time.
- No no, tell me now! – Lily immediately snapped to attention. – Please!
- Only if you order more tea.
- But of course! Aunt Tanya! – she bellowed across the hall. – More tea over here, please!
Much time later
The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple as Violet and Lily stood outside the guild. The air was cool, carrying the faint scent of burning wood from nearby chimneys.
- Evening already, eh? – Violet glanced at the darkening sky.
Lily fidgeted, her fingers twisting the hem of her tunic.
- Before you go... can I... uh... see your powers? Please?
Violet hesitated. Would it be worth it? Could it make her suspicious? But the hopeful gleam in Lily’s crimson eyes was impossible to resist. With a sharp exhale, Violet ignited her power. A brilliant blue aura erupted around her, her violet hair streaking with sapphire at the tips. Her eyes blazed with blue fire, casting an eerie glow on her sharp features.
Lily stood frozen, her dreamy gaze drinking in every detail, the way the energy crackled at Violet’s fingertips, the way her shadow seemed to ripple with unseen force. Then, just as suddenly, the transformation vanished.
- Happy?
- I don’t know how I’ll sleep tonight! – Lily clasped her hands together, stars practically dancing in her eyes.
- Heh. You’ll be fine, kid.
- Still though! It’s incredible that my powers look like yours! I’ll become just like you, just you wait!
- Heh. Good luck.
Without thinking, she reached out and ruffled Lily’s hair, just like she used to do with Iris. The moment her fingers touched those violet strands, she froze. Shit. Too late. Lily turned to stone, her face burning redder than her rogue strand. A beat of silence.
- AH! AH! AH! AH! VIOLET JUST RUFFLED MY HAIR! NO WAY THIS IS REAL! SOMEONE PINCH ME! – she pinched her own arm. – OW! Not a dream… – she clutched her head, distraught. – Now I won’t sleep for two days! Mama’s gonna kill me!
Violet exhaled, then smiled, genuinely, softly.
- Take care, Lily. I’ll see you again.
- Hopefully very soon! Poka, Violet!
Chapter 6: New Request at the Village
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 6 – New Request at the Village
The guild hall buzzed with its usual clamor, adventurers swapping stories, clinking mugs, and shuffling through quest notices. Lily leaned against the wooden counter, twirling her katana’s hilt absently as Vova approached with his team in tow.
- Say, you’ve got your swordfighter back. What’s the point of me sticking around?
- We decided there’s room for a seventh. You’re the kind who slots into any team like a missing puzzle piece.
- But that means the pay’s split seven ways instead of six.
- Da. – Vova smirked and slid a request parchment toward her. – But it also means we can tackle this.
Lily scanned the notice, a village pleading for help against a goblin infestation. She snorted.
- Doesn’t sound too difficult.
- With a Lord Goblin leading them.
- Wait. The Lord Goblin? Big, scary, wears that stupid little crown?
- Da.
Lily slammed her palms on the table, her rogue strand bouncing.
- Heh, count me in! That sounds super duper fun!
- Great. – Vova chuckled. – Meet the team. – he gestured behind him:
Petya, an armor knight whose plate mail looked thicker than a castle wall. He waved with a gauntleted hand, his smile warm beneath his helmet. Sonya, a mage with distant, starry eyes. She barely glanced up from her tome, but the air around her hummed with latent magic. Slava, a lanky archer already smirking. Alyona, a healer whose gentle face and silver-ringed fingers promised safety. Misha, a swordmaster clad in black, his resting scowl at odds with his cheerful wave.
- Ignore the face. I promise I don’t bite.
- What a colorful bunch! – Lily clasped her hands. – So! – she spun on her heel, her crimson eyes alight. – Shall we go?
- Da. Let’s.
The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and pine as the group stood guard under the moonlight. The village palisade loomed behind them, its torches casting flickering shadows across the tense faces of Vova’s team.
- So, Lily. Heard some stories. Especially that shapeshifter one. They say you can change your form too. That true?
- Yep!
Without hesitation, she snapped her fingers, crimson aura erupted around her, her violet hair streaked with fiery red at the tips, her eyes blazing like twin embers.
- Woah. You’re… not even trying to hide it?
- Why should I? – Lily tilted her head, her rogue strand bouncing. – Especially when the Legendary Violet has the same kind of powers!
- That’s just legends.
- Nuh-uh! I saw it myself! Blue aura, blue-tipped hair, flaming eyes, just like this, but swap red for blue!
- Huh. Even if that’s true, I don’t—! – he shook his head. – Actually, where do your powers come from?
- Dunno! – Lily shrugged. – They just kinda… happened. No explanation, but they’re super duper cool! – she pumped her fist. – I’m gonna be just like Violet, just watch!
- Too much ambition…
Petya, his massive frame silhouetted against the torchlight, suddenly straightened.
- Hey, guys. Would you look at that.
Eyes turned toward the tree line. Shadows shifted, goblins, dozens of them, slinking from the forest’s edge, their beady eyes glinting with malice.
- Then let’s give ‘em a nice welcome.
Misha moved first, a blur of black steel. His sword cleaved through the first goblin’s throat before he reversed his grip and impaled another through the eye.
A dozen more surged toward Petya, but the armored knight roared, slamming his shield into the ground. The force launched the creatures into the air, where Sonya’s fire spells incinerated them mid-flight, her expression as calm as if she were reading a book.
Vova charged ahead, his axe carving arcs through the horde, while Slava’s arrows whistled past, each shot finding a mark. Behind them, Alyona’s healing glow mended wounds before they could slow the team.
Lily twirled her katana, her crimson aura flickering.
- Hehe. Ready, Mr. Rising Star? – she paused, as if listening. – Huh? Asking if I’ll use my powers? Why not? It’ll be super duper fun!
She vanished. A goblin’s arm flew off before it could blink. Lily reappeared, twisting mid-air to slash another’s ribs open. She dashed again, her movements so fast they left afterimages in the moonlight. The next goblin dropped, its axe still raised.
She zigzagged through the chaos, a crimson streak of precision, each strike a killing blow, each step flawless. By the time the last goblin fell, Lily was already sheathing her sword, her rogue strand bouncing triumphantly.
The ground trembled as Lord Goblin emerged from the shadows, his massive axe glinting in the torchlight. His bloated belly, actually layered armor, jiggled with each step, and his oversized crown sat crookedly on his head.
- Huh. – Lily blinked. – He really wears a crown. I thought that was a joke.
With a roar, the Lord Goblin slammed his axe down where Lily had stood a second before, splintering the earth.
- You puny human! Think you can take me? I am the King of All Goblins!
- You can talk?! – Lily tilted her head. – Surprise, surprise. Though, I’m pretty sure someone else already claims that title. Sorry, but it’s not you.
- You dare mock me?!
- Calm down! – Lily held up her hands. – I’m not mocking you, just stating facts!
Lord Goblin snarled and swung again. Lily pivoted, her katana slashing across his ribs, but his thick hide absorbed the blow. He retaliated with a crushing elbow strike, but she dodged, countering with a lightning-fast cut to his cheek. Blood sprayed.
- Ah-ha! Weak point: the head.
The Lord Goblin bellowed and brought his axe down in a crushing arc. Lily leaped onto the blade, using it as a springboard to slash across his eye. He staggered, clutching his face.
- Sorry! Didn’t mean to slash that hard.
- Grh! I’m getting tired of this!
He began swinging wildly, his axe carving chaotic arcs through the air. But Lily was a crimson blur, leaving afterimages as she weaved through his attacks. Then, she vanished from his sight. The Lord Goblin looked up, too late. Lily descended from above, driving Rising Star through the back of his throat in mid-air. She yanked the blade free, landing gracefully as the Lord Goblin collapsed, blood gushing from the wound.
With his last strength, he rolled onto his back, just in time to see Lily standing over him, her crimson eyes burning like twin suns. Lord Goblin choked.
- Those eyes… No, it can’t be! Lord Veles! How…?
- Hmm? What’s that?
- That face… No, it can’t be… Just how…?
And with that, the King of All Goblins went still.
The battlefield fell silent. Lily wiped her blade clean as her team regrouped. Vova surveyed the carnage, nodding in approval.
- Great job, team. Looks like that was the last of them.
- Oh, dear! – Alyona hurried over, her healing staff glowing faintly. – Lily, are you hurt?
Lily spun in a circle, checking herself.
- Actually? Not a scratch! Hehe!
- Pack his head. – Vova grinned. – I’m sure we’ll get a hefty reward for that. – he clapped his hands. – Tomorrow, we feast!
- Yay! – Lily pumped her fists. – Hopefully you’ve got something spicy in your stores!
- Haha! For our MVP? Anything.
Lily sheathed her sword, her rogue strand bouncing as she turned toward the village.
- Great! Then let’s go back!
Chapter 7: The Feast
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 7 – The Feast
The tavern roared with laughter and clinking mugs as Lily’s new team celebrated their victory. The table was piled high with food, spicy chicken wings glistening with sauce, roasted potatoes dusted with fiery seasoning, and steaming meat pies. Lily bounced in her seat, eyes darting between dishes.
- Mm-mm-mm! Where do I start? The spicy chicken wings? Or these extra-spicy potatoes? So much good stuff!
- Haha, eat up, Lily. – Vova chuckled. – You’ve earned it.
- No fair! – Lily pouted. – You took less than me. Now I’ll feel sad when you’re done and I’m still eating. – she paused, then grinned. – Actually, no! Let’s eat!
- Hah. – Misha, smirking, wiped grease from his lips. – Didn’t expect such a frail girl to handle spice like this.
- I’ll just enjoy watching her regret it later. – Slava leaned back.
- Rude! – Lily stuck out her tongue, already tinged red. – I’m very adjusted to spice. Actually, I’m the only one in my family who can eat this. Ah! So hot! I love it!
- Careful, dear. – Alyona sighed, pushing a glass of milk toward her. – You’ll burn your tongue clean off.
- Heh. – Vova grinned. – Consider this your reward for last night. You solo’d the big guy.
- Speaking of which… He mentioned Veles. Isn’t that the ruler of Nav’? The one the Legendary Violet convinced to join her against Perun?
- Indeed. – Sonya, her voice cool and measured, didn’t look up from her book. – Rumors say they fell in love… and she bore him many children. Though none survived in Nav’. – a pause. – But that’s just hearsay.
- Of course she had lots of babies! She’s legendary! My mom’s kinda legendary too, she’s about to pop out her fourth!
- Haha! – Petya laughed. – You’re quite fond of her, aren’t you?
- I am! And one day, I’ll be just like her!
- With those powers of yours? – Vova raised a brow. – I believe it.
- Just be careful, little thunder. – Petya’s tone grew dark. – She’s also known for being… cruel to her enemies. Don’t become one.
- Me? – Lily gasped. – An enemy of the Legendary Violet? THE Violet? Never! And now that I’ve seen her in person, I know I’ll be like her! We’re practically twins!
The group exchanged glances.
- You… weren’t joking about meeting her, were you?
- Why would I lie? Purple hair, green eyes, that perfect rogue strand, just like in the books! Or do you just envy me for seeing her violet-blue form? – she stuck her nose in the air. – Sorry, I don’t talk to losers.
Sonya flipped a page.
- It is theorized she has such a form. Though only gods and demons she’s fought would’ve seen it.
- See? Sonya gets it! She must be a Violet fangirl too! – she wagged a finger. – But sorry, there’s only room for one #1 fan, and that’s me!
- I just read a lot. – Sonya sighed.
- Say, Lily… When we get back to the guild, want to join us? Permanently? – Vova glanced around. – The others don’t mind.
- Well, I do. – Slava grumbled.
- Don’t listen. – Petya elbowed him. – He’s just mad you stole his kills last night.
- Wrong! But… yeah, fine. Why not.
- Hehe! – Lily’s eyes sparkled. – I’d love to! Mama and Papa will be so proud!
- Then welcome to the team. – Vova extended a calloused hand.
Lily shook it vigorously, her rogue strand bouncing.
- Glad to be aboard!
Later at her home
The wooden door of the cottage burst open as Lily skipped inside, her cheeks flushed with excitement.
- Mama! Papa! Guess what news I brought?!
- Ah, privet, Lily! You’re home!
- Dear, what is it? Hope you didn’t get into trouble again.
- Rude! – Lily pouted. – Actually, I joined a team! They’re super duper cool! – she clasped her hands. – Can I bring them here one day? You’ll love them!
- Of course! – Marina’s eyes crinkled. – Just tell me when they’re coming.
- Next week, probably! We’ve got one more job, then—
Ilya, her younger brother, barreled into the room, his hair sticking up like hers.
- Sister! You’re back!
- What’s up, lil’ bro! – Lily ruffled his hair. – Heard you crushed your exams?
- More importantly, everyone’s saying you fought the Lord Goblin and solo’d him. True?!
- Hehe. Kinda did.
- Oh, dear! – Marina gasped. – Wasn’t he dangerous?
Lily spun, showing off her unscathed arms.
- Not a scratch! These red powers are super handy!
- Good to hear you’re unharmed. – Vlad nodded approvingly.
- Oh! – Lily bounced. – And guess what? I met the Legendary Violet! She’s got powers just like mine, but blue! Can you believe it? I’m basically her!
- Truly?! – Ilya’s jaw dropped. – You met Violet? That’s—! That’s—! – he grabbed her sleeve. – Now I envy you, sister!
- Don’t worry! – Lily laughed, mussing his hair again. – Next time, I’ll make her meet you!
- Really?! You’re the best! – he tugged her toward the door. – Come on! Show me those sword tricks you promised!
- Duty calls! – Lily winked at her parents.
As the siblings vanished outside, Marina and Vlad exchanged a glance.
- Do you think… what I think? – Marina lowered her voice.
- Maybe. – Vlad rubbed his beard. – But does she know?
- If it’s true… how could Violet abandon her?
- She might’ve had reasons. – Vlad squeezed her shoulder. – But Lily’s happy now. Our guesses could hurt her.
Marina smiled softly as another kick came.
- Oh! This one’s lively… Vlad, I’m so happy.
Vlad kissed her forehead.
- Lily’s been waiting for this baby longer than we have.
- Do you think… she resents us? For hiding the truth?
- You’re her mother. You know she loves us. – he stood. – Tea?
- Yes, dear.
Chapter 8: Interrogation in Nav’
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 8 – Interrogation in Nav’
The air in the werewolf settlement was thick with the scent of damp fur and burning torches. The ramshackle buildings of the outpost loomed in the gloom of Nav', shadows stretching like claws.
- This must be it. Mavka heard the demons here yapping about Morana.
- Then let’s wreck this place and get our answers.
With a flick of his wrist, the door exploded inward, splinters raining across the dirt floor. The werewolves inside snarled, scrambling to their feet, but froze when they saw who stood in the doorway. Violet stepped inside, Shooting Star resting on her shoulder.
- Sorry to drop in unannounced. You’ve got info we need. Spill it, and maybe we’ll be merciful.
- Otherwise, we can do this the hard way. – Veles smirked, cracking his neck.
The alpha werewolf, a hulking brute with silver-streaked fur, rose from his throne of bones.
- You are… Lord Veles. And that half-breed Violet.
- Rude! – Violet’s eye twitched. – Not a half-breed, just a human who’s kicked your sorry asses multiple times.
- Lord Veles, with respect… we won’t talk.
- Since when do you beasts respect me? – Veles laughed.
- Let me handle this. – Violet sighed.
She vanished. The world stilled. The torches froze mid-flicker. The werewolves were statues, their snarls locked in time.
- Huh. – Veles whistled. – Neat that it doesn’t affect me.
A blue streak wove through the room. Then. Click. Violet reappeared, sheathing her sword. Time lurched back into motion, and every werewolf collapsed, blood spraying. The alpha crashed to his knees, clutching a gash across his chest. Alive. For now.
- Ghh—!
Violet leaned down, the tip of her blade hovering at his throat.
- Now. Speak. Chernobog’s wife, Morana. Where is she?
- I don’t know! – the alpha coughed blood.
- Don’t lie to me. – Violet pressed the blade closer.
- It’s true! – he gasped. – We only know of her daughter!
- Hah! Now that’s interesting. Notice how I didn’t even have to pull your tongue out for that. – she tilted her head. – What can you tell me about her?
The alpha wheezed.
- She’s in… Yav'. Hiding. Planning… something.
- Vague. What is she planning?
- I swear, I don’t know! We were just given a task!
- What task?
-…to be ready. To invade Yav'.
Violet and Veles exchanged glances.
- Why? – Veles asked.
- Maya, her daughter, wants to bring the same chaos Chernobog did centuries ago. Whether it’s Morana’s orders or her own madness… we don’t know.
Violet sighed, sheathing her sword.
- Still no damn details. But at least we know that bastard had a kid too. – she kicked the alpha onto his back. – I could kill you. Consider this a warning. If you follow her orders? Next time, I won’t stop at wounds.
- Let’s go. – Veles turned toward the door.
Violet nodded, and the two strode out, leaving the werewolves groaning in their wrecked den.
The dim glow of Nav''s eternal twilight cast long shadows as Violet and Veles walked through the barren wastes, the ruins of the werewolf den fading behind them. Violet kicked a pebble, her brow furrowed.
- Hmph. Everything’s so complicated. We can’t even find Morana, and now we learn she’s got a daughter too? Strange...
- Like we didn’t have enough trouble already.
- Yeah. – she groaned.
- At least we know she’s in Yav'. – Veles nudged her shoulder.
- That’s one clue! This sucks!
- Hey. If they try to invade Yav' again, you know they’ll be safe. They’ve got me, my brother… and you, Violet.
- Yeah… but we don’t know how strong they are.
- You underestimate us too much.
- Or maybe you underestimate them. What if they know our strengths? What if they’re prepared?
- You think too much. For now, let’s just find them.
-...yeah. – she sighed. – You’re right.
A heavy silence settled between them, the weight of unspoken memories pressing in. Then Violet’s voice dropped, barely above a whisper.
- Veles… our kids. They died for nothing. And it’s all Morana’s fault. – she glanced at him. – Don’t you feel angry?
Veles stared ahead, his expression unreadable.
- That’s just Nav' for you. Some die. Some survive. – a pause. – At least one of ours lived, because we left her with humans.
-...that was… a hard decision.
- You saw her again?
- She doesn’t know. But… – a faint, almost sad smile tugged at her lips. – She’s grown into a fine lady. Kinda reminds me of when I was just Mia. – her voice cracked. – ...we failed as parents.
- Hah! – Veles barked a laugh, sharp, but not unkind. – Indeed we did! – then, softer. – But she’s happy, isn’t she? With them?
-...she is. – she closed her eyes.
- Then let’s make sure they stay that way.
- Yeah.
Chapter 9: Maya
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 9 – Maya
The cave echoed with the last groans of defeated monsters as Vova’s team caught their breath. The air smelled of iron and damp stone, their boots crunching over shattered bones. Vova wiped his brow.
- Phew. Another request done. Though these guys were tougher than the last. – he jerked his chin toward the loot pile. – Pack up. Guild’s waiting.
Slava scowled, nudging a goblin corpse with his boot.
- You noticed how ever since Lily joined, our jobs got easier?
- Haha! – Petya laughed, clapping Slava’s back hard enough to make him stumble. – You complaining? Shouldn’t we be grateful? Or are you just jealous?
- Shut up. She just steals my kills.
- I like her. – Misha smirked. – She shuts you up without trying.
- At least the pay’s good.
- Enough chit-chat! – Vova barked. – Move ou—
Footsteps. The team whirled. A silver-haired woman walked out of the cave’s left hole, her blue eyes glacial. She couldn’t have been older than eighteen, yet her presence froze the air itself.
- A human? – Slava tensed. – What’s she doing here?
- Maybe got further? – Petya frowned. – But alone…?
The woman turned to the group, her lips curled.
- I didn’t expect to find humans here. – her voice was like frostbite. – How… convenient.
A blink. She vanished, reappearing in front of Alyona, her sword a silver flash aimed for the healer’s throat.
CLANG!
Lily’s katana intercepted the strike, sparks flying. The woman tilted her head, unfazed.
- Interesting. Those eyes. – she stepped back, assessing Lily like a specimen.
- Form up!
- Lily, thank you! – Alyona gasped.
- Don’t mention it!
The silver-haired woman circled them.
- Most interesting. You’re one of ours. – her nostrils flared. – And that scent… You’re definitely hers. I thought I’d purged them all.
- You talk in riddles! Who are you?
- Maya. – The woman smiled, a predator’s grin. – Remember that name. It’ll be the last thing you do.
- That explains nothing! Why attack us? We’ve got no beef with you! You’re from the guild, right?
- Insolent fool. – Maya’s patience snapped.
Then, a blast of energy. Purple aura erupted around Maya, her silver hair bleeding to violet at the tips, her eyes igniting with violet fire.
- She’s… just like Lily.
- So it’s not just Violet and Lily. – Sonya’s fingers twitched. – But what is she?
- Neat! – Lily, instead of fear, beamed. – You’ve got powers too! And purple? Super duper stylish!
- For their child, I expected gravitas. But your idiocy just makes this easier.
She vanished. Lily parried mid-turn, their blades shrieking.
- Not bad. – Maya’s voice hissed in her ear. – But you’re nothing to me.
A slash from behind, Lily ducked. Then she too vanished. The cave became a kaleidoscope of afterimages, red and purple streaks colliding, swords clashing in bursts of sparks. The team could only gasp as the battle unfolded too fast to track.
Then silence. Both reappeared, panting, ten paces apart. Maya’s aura faded, her hair returning to silver.
- You’re… adequate for a half-breed. – she sheathed her sword. – I’ll let you live. For now. This could be… amusing.
With that, she dissolved into shadows, leaving only a whisper:
- Run along, little Liliac.
The team stood frozen, the cave suddenly too large, too quiet. Vova was the first to move, gripping Lily’s shoulder.
-…Lily. You okay?
Lily exhaled, rolling her stiff wrist.
- Yeah. Just… tired. – her usual grin was strained. – Let’s go.
- Move out. Now.
At the guild
The guild hall buzzed with its usual clamor, but Vova’s team sat in an uncharacteristic silence, their mugs of ale half-finished. The weight of their near-death encounter still hung heavy in the air.
- Another job successfully done! Good work, team! – Vova hesitated, then added. – ...though this one was terrifying. If not for Lily, Alyona would’ve been dead. Maybe all of us. – his grip tightened around his tankard. – We should avoid that woman. At all costs.
Lily, however, bounced in her seat, her crimson eyes alight.
- I know she attacked us, but wasn’t she super duper cool? That purple hair? The way she moved? So stylish!
- Kid, you’re too excited. – Petya groaned. – We could’ve died back there.
- But we didn’t! Maybe she mistook us for someone else! Maybe she’s just… troubled! Next time, I’ll talk to her properly—
- You’re naive. – Slava slammed his mug down. – She’ll kill you next time!
- He’s right. – Alyona nodded, her usually gentle face stern. – The best we can do is stay away.
-...but—
- We can’t risk it, kid. – Misha cut in, uncharacteristically serious. – No more cave jobs for a while.
-...at least we got the reward, I guess.
- Hey, don’t be so down! – Vova nudged her shoulder. – We’re alive, aren’t we?
-...yeah. And you know what’ll cheer us up? Food! Let’s go to my house, Mama’s probably cooking a feast for us!
As the team stood to leave, the guild doors swung open, and Violet strode in, her sharp green eyes scanning the room before locking onto Tanya behind the counter.
- LADY VIOLET?! – Lily gasped.
She darted forward, nearly tackling Violet in a hug.
- You’re here!!
- Lily. – Violet staggered but managed to pat Lily’s head awkwardly. – Back from the mission, I suppose.
- Yes! It was super duper fun!
Behind her, Vova’s team gaped.
- Did she say… Violet? As in the—?
- The resemblance is uncanny. – Sonya adjusted her glasses, studying Violet. – But why is she here?
- You’re Lily’s teammates? – Violet eyed the group.
- Y-Yes! But… are you really the Legendary Violet?
- I told you! – Lily spun, arms wide. – She’s real!
Violet sighed.
- Yes, it’s me. Now, if you’ll excuse me—
- Wait! Lady Violet! We met this girl in the caves, she had powers like mine! And yours! Purple hair, violet flames, she called herself Maya!
Violet froze. Then. Her voice dropped to a lethal calm.
- Where?
- Near Maliy Village! She was super duper fast—
Violet turned on her heel.
- Change of plans. I need to go.
- WAIT! – Lily lunged, grabbing her sleeve.
- What now?
Lily clasped her hands, eyes shining.
- We’re having a party at my house tonight… and I promised my little brother I’d introduce you. Please come? Just for a little while?
Violet opened her mouth, likely to refuse, but something in Lily’s pleading gaze gave her pause. A beat. Then. Violet exhaled.
-...fine. My job can wait.
Lily squealed, grabbing Violet’s hand.
- REALLY?! That’s super duper cool! I’ll tell you all about the fight on the way! – she spun to the team. – Come on, everyone! Mama and Papa are waiting!
Chapter 10: Family Feast
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 10 – Family Feast
The warm glow of lanterns filled the cozy cottage as Lily’s family and Vova’s team gathered around the table, laden with steaming dishes. The air was thick with the aroma of spiced meats, fresh bread, and Lily’s infamous "super duper spicy" steak. Lily stood dramatically, arms wide.
- And now, let me introduce our main guest! – she pointed to Violet, who stood awkwardly by the door. – The famous! The reckless! The savage! And most importantly, the Legendary Violet!
The room erupted. Ilya nearly toppled his chair.
- IS IT REALLY YOU?! Like, from the legends?!
- I wish I wasn’t at the moment...
- That’s super duper cool! – Ilya vibrated with excitement. – Sister, you weren’t lying!
- Hehe, of course not! She’s even cooler in person, right? – she turned to her mother. – Mama, this is who I’ll become!
- How delightful! Lady Violet, please, sit with us.
Violet muttered a "Thanks" and took a seat.
The mercs regaled Lily’s father with tales of their battles, Vova emphasizing Lily’s heroics. Each time, Vlad ruffled Lily’s hair proudly, his calloused hands gentle. The healer and mother spoke softly, Alyona praising Lily’s kindness while Marina fretted over her scrapes. The boy bombarded Violet with questions ("Did you really fight Chernobog? Can you actually freeze time?"), and, to everyone’s shock, Violet answered. Not with snark, but with unnatural patience, her voice softer than any had ever heard.
Then came the spice test. Lily slid a bowl of crimson-glazed candies toward Violet.
- Wanna try? Though they’re super duper spicy.
- I’m quite tolerant, thanks. – Violet smirked.
She popped one in her mouth. No flinch. No gasp. Just a slow blink of approval.
- YOU SAW THAT?! – Lily gasped. – She’s just like me!
-...maybe too much. – Slava muttered into his drink.
- Tasty. – Violet nodded. – Could use more heat.
- Hoho! – Lily’s eyes sparkled. – Then you’ll love this! – she shoved her plate forward, a steak drowned in molten-red sauce.
- But this is yours.
- Everything for the Legendary Violet! Try it!
Violet took a bite. Chewed. Swallowed.
- Mmm. Perfect.
Lily nearly vibrated out of her seat.
- Hehe! Knew you’d like it!
Later
The door clicked shut behind Lily and the others, leaving the cottage in heavy silence. The remnants of the feast sat untouched, the air thick with unspoken words. Violet stood, her chair scraping against the floor.
- I thank you for the meal. It was... nice. If you'll excuse me, I should go.
- Leaving so soon? – Marina reached out, her voice gentle but firm. – I thought we could talk a little longer.
- Lady Violet. – Vlad crossed his arms, his gaze steady. – Stay. Please.
-...why?
- Why not? – Marina smiled, though her eyes were sharp. – You’ve been Lily’s idol for years. I’d love to hear more about you.
Lily, ever oblivious to tension, grinned.
- Heh, finally you get why I love her so much! Come on, Ilya, let’s see the others off!
- But—
- No buts! – Lily dragged him by the collar. – Adults need to talk adult things.
The door slammed behind them. Silence. Then Violet exhaled, her voice flat.
- So. You’ve figured it out.
- It is you. – Marina’s hands trembled around her teacup. – The one who left her at our door.
-...I did. – Violet didn’t flinch.
- Why? – Vlad’s knuckles whitened. – Lily’s—she’s incredible. How could you abandon her?
-...I had no choice.
- You left your child! – Marina slammed her cup down. – How could a mother—
- They all died. – Violet’s voice cracked like ice.
A beat. Marina recoiled.
-...what?
- I had many children. They all perished in Nav'. – her fingers curled into fists. – Liliac was the last one. The only way to save her... was to leave her with humans. Far from Nav'. Far from me.
-...what happened?
Violet’s laugh was hollow.
- Morana. Chernobog’s widow. She slaughtered them. And even with my power… – she trailed off, jaw clenched. – Liliac has my blood. And Veles’s. That’s why her powers awakened.
- Veles? As in, the ruler of Nav'? Then Lily is—
- No. – Violet shook her head. – She’s human. Like me. Just... with extras. – a bitter smile. – Don’t worry. She’s yours.
-...you’re her hero. – Marina wiped her eyes. – She adores you. Don’t you want her to know?
- She has a family. You. Telling her would only hurt her. – her voice dropped to a whisper. – I’m not her mother anymore. I don’t deserve to be.
-...you’re wrong. – Vlad rubbed his temples. – And right. Abandoning her wasn’t what a mother should do... but you did it to save her. – he exhaled. – That’s mother enough.
-...thanks.
Silence stretched. Marina spoke first.
- Will you ever tell her?
- Maybe. But not now. She’s happy. – she stood abruptly. – I’m sorry. For burdening you.
- Violet... she’s our daughter. Always has been. – a pause. – I can’t forgive you for leaving her... but I will ask you to protect her.
- I will. Even if I’ve lost the right to call myself her mother... I’ll die before I let anything happen to her. – she turned to leave, then hesitated. – ...thank you. For accepting her.
The door closed softly behind her.
Chapter 11: Truth about Maya
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 11 – Truth about Maya
The wind howled across the empty plains, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant storms. Violet stood alone, arms crossed, her blue aura pulsing like a beacon in the twilight. Mavka, her shadow demon, slithered around her feet, her voice a teasing whisper.
- That poor brat. She’d hate you if she knew the truth.
- You’re right. – Violet didn’t flinch. – So we leave it be, for now.
- Then why are we here?
Violet smirked.
- Thought you’d enjoy a trip down memory lane. Plus… I invited a guest.
-...a guest?
Flash!
A blade sliced through the air, Violet caught it bare-handed, blood dripping between her fingers. Maya landed a few paces away, her silver hair whipping in the wind.
- So. Finally decided to show yourself?
- Me? I’ve been looking everywhere for you.
- You murdered my father. – Maya’s lips curled. – So tell me, how does it feel knowing I slaughtered your children?
Violet exhaled, her voice eerily calm.
- So it was you. I figured Morana would send lackeys. But no, this was personal for you.
- When you killed my father, I swore to Mother I’d destroy everything you loved.
- How petty. – Violet shrugged. – Your father was a scam of a god, begging to be put down. I just obliged.
- You—!
- But you? You didn’t just kill my kids. You tortured them. Played with them. That’s all your kind knows how to do.
- You’re just a human who stole my father’s power! Give it back!
- Oh good. – Violet’s grin turned feral. – I finally have an excuse to torture your kind.
Maya’s body erupted in violet flames, her hair bleeding to silver-purple, eyes burning like dying stars.
- DIE!
Violet just… laughed. First a smirk. Then a chuckle. Then a maniacal, unhinged cackle that made even Mavka blink.
- WHAT’S SO FUNNY?!
Violet wiped a tear.
- Oh, no no, it’s just hilarious! You hate humans, right? Despise them? But here’s the kick! – she leaned in. – You’re one of us.
- Explain. Now.
- Ordinary demons can’t transform like we do. Not even Perun or Veles can. But humans who steal demonic power? We can. So either you’re some rogue’s half-breed… or Morana was human once too. – she barked another laugh. – Isn’t that rich?
- You LIE! Mother can do this too!
- Ah. – Violet’s grin widened. – So she was human. Damn, the irony burns, doesn’t it?
- Shut up! Your lies won’t reach me!
Violet sighed, rolling her shoulders.
- Alright, alright, joke’s over. Time to die. – she snapped her fingers. – Mav, if you may.
The ground beneath Maya erupted. Black tendrils, slick as oil and twice as vicious, exploded from Violet’s shadow, lashing toward her like serpents. Violet grinned as Maya dodged, her voice dripping with mock pity.
- Run all you want, it’s useless! Mavka’s already stronger than you’ll ever be!
Maya ignored the taunt. With a burst of violet aura, she vanished, reappearing in front of Violet, her blade a silver flash aimed for her throat. Violet didn’t even blink. She sidestepped, the strike slicing empty air. The tendrils surged after Maya, relentless. Maya twisted, slashing at the shadows, but for every severed tendril, two more grew back.
- Ugh, this is pathetic. – Violet yawned. – Mav, spike her.
The earth shuddered. Black spikes impaled Maya from below, lifting her off the ground like a grotesque puppet. Blood dripped down the obsidian shards as Violet strolled forward, hands in her pockets.
- Look at you. – Violet tilted her head. – Can’t even handle a shadow. And you thought you could fight me?
Maya spat blood, her violet eyes burning.
- Y-You… I’ll kill you—!
She unleashed her violet flames, but the tendrils didn’t burn. They absorbed it.
- Oops. Forgot to mention? Mavka feeds on my energy, the same energy you’re using. Your little fireworks are useless.
- Y-You—!
Violet leaned in, her voice a saccharine whisper.
- Oh, and one more thing… You tried to kill my daughter, didn’t you? – her smile vanished. – That was a fatal mistake.
She raised a single finger, blue fire dancing at its tip.
- First, I’ll just… tap you. – she pressed it to Maya’s forehead.
Sizzle. Maya screamed as her skin bubbled and melted, her regeneration stitching it back together just in time for Violet to slash her arm open with a sword.
- Then. – Violet purred. – I’ll strip you of your precious powers. You’ll be human again. Weak. And then. – she gestured to Mavka. – I’ll send her inside you. One organ at a time. She’ll keep your heart beating just long enough for you to feel everything.
Maya’s pupils shrank to pinpricks.
- Ready? – Violet grinned.
Her finger descended.
WHOOSH!
A cloaked figure materialized, snatching Maya mid-air. The spikes shattered as he cradled her limp form. Violet blinked.
- Oh? New player? Sure, sure, I’ll crush you too. Just not as slow.
The man’s hood obscured his face, but his voice was smooth as poisoned honey.
- May we meet another time.
He teleported away. Gone. The fields was silent.
- Well, that was a bummer. Really hoped I could’ve finished her off for good.
Mavka slithered up her arm, her shadowy form coiling like smoke.
- You’re awfully calm for someone who was about to execute her in a way that’d make demons shudder.
- That’s ‘cause I got interrupted. – Violet shrugged. – Anyway, change of plans.
- Again? What now?
- Nothing fancy. You’re gonna separate from me.
-...what?
- Remember how I transferred Zmey to Iris? – Violet crossed her arms. – Same deal. You’re going to Liliac.
- Wait—seriously? I thought with her powers awakened, she’d be stupidly safe!
- Apparently, Maya’s a bigger threat than I thought. Was planning to just kill her and call it a day, but... – she gestured to the empty field where the cloaked man had vanished. – Now I need insurance.
-...are you sure? Without you, I won’t get nearly as much energy.
- You’ll be fine. My energy’s strong enough to reach you from miles away. Plus, you’ve got your own reserves, and hey, you can borrow a little from Liliac if you’re desperate.
-...fine. But I’ll miss you.
- Relax, it’s temporary. I’ll track Maya down properly this time. No more escapes.
- Very well...
Violet stretched.
- We head to her village tonight. When she’s asleep, we’ll do the transfer. Oh, and—! – she grinned. – If she asks what you are? Tell her the Legendary Violet sent you to protect her super duper hard. She’ll love that.
-...I’m not saying that.
- Hah, figured. Well then. – she offered her hand, shadows swirling between her fingers. – Shall we go, partner?
Chapter 12: The Dark Widow
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 12 – The Dark Widow
The air in the place was thick with the scent of damp earth and smoldering embers. Maya coughed, her body still trembling from the battle, as the cloaked man deposited her before the looming silhouette of her mother.
- Your Majesty, I’ve brought Lady Maya, as you requested.
- Good. You’re dismissed. – Morana’s voice said from the dark.
The man bowed and vanished into the gloom. Maya struggled to her knees, her violet aura flickering weakly.
- Mother… I’m sorry. I couldn’t—
Morana stepped forward, just enough for the dim light to catch the curve of her smile.
- It’s fine, dear. Violet is strong. You were never meant to face her directly. – a hand, pale as bone, stroked Maya’s hair. – But I don’t blame you. She took your father from us… it’s only natural you’d hate her.
Maya shuddered under her touch.
- Mother… – her voice was small. – That human… she said I’m a half-breed. That you were once human too. She lied, didn’t she?
Silence. Maya’s breath hitched.
-...why aren’t you answering?
- She spoke the truth. – Morana sighed.
Maya recoiled. Morana continued, her tone eerily calm.
- Neither of us is fully demon. I stole my power from a demigod, similar to your father. And you… – her fingers traced Maya’s cheek. – You’re just like Violet’s children. Born of a human and a god.
- Why didn’t you tell me? – Maya’s fists clenched.
- Because rage is a purer fuel than doubt. And look how strong it made you. – her nails dug in just enough to sting. – I never asked you to slaughter her offspring… but it worked, didn’t it?
-...what am I?
- Who are you? It’s simple, my darling. You’re my daughter. The only thing that matters. – her thumb brushed Maya’s lower lip. – You’ve grown so strong… perhaps too strong for your own good. But I know how to make you stronger.
A pause.
- You do want to kill Violet, don’t you?
- Yes.
Morana’s laugh was a whisper.
- Good. Then listen closely. – she leaned in, her breath cold against Maya’s ear. – There’s a rumor… that if a subhuman, whether they stole power or inherited it, slays a true god, they can become one. A Second Awakening.
- Then I’ll hunt a demigod and—
- Not any god. One of the Creator’s sons.
-...You don’t mean—?
- Perun. – Morana’s grin widened. – Or Veles.
Maya swallowed hard.
- But I lost to Violet, and she wasn’t even using her full power!
- Oh, my dear… you misunderstand. Violet long surpassed them. Even without a Second Awakening, she could end either of them.
- But when she fought Perun centuries ago, she needed Veles’s help to—
- And she was holding back. If she’d been one of us, if she’d wanted to, she could’ve slain one and ascended. – her voice dropped to a purr. – I’ll delay our plans… if you wish to surpass her.
-...I will. – then, weakly. – But first… I need to rest. Violet… broke me.
Morana gathered her into an embrace, her touch suddenly tender.
- Of course, my love. Let me comfort you.
Maya melted into her arms, her whisper barely audible:
- Oh, Mother…
Chapter 13: A Mother’s Shadow
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 13 – A Mother’s Shadow
The night was still, the only sound the soft rustling of leaves outside Lily’s window. Violet stood over her sleeping form, her silhouette barely visible in the moonlight. She watched the gentle rise and fall of Lily’s chest, the way her rogue strand twitched like an antenna with each breath. A smile, rare, unguarded, tugged at Violet’s lips.
- She’s just like Iris was… back then. – Violet whispered.
Mavka, coiled around her shoulders, groaned.
- Ugh. Here come the waterworks. Just do it already.
- Right.
She raised a hand, shadows pooling in her palm. With a slow, deliberate motion, she pressed it to Lily’s chest. Dark tendrils seeped into the girl’s skin, vanishing beneath her nightshirt. Violet pulled back, her voice softer than moonlight.
- It’s done. Sleep well, little storm. You’re protected.
She turned to leave. Creak. The bedroom door swung open. Marina stood there, her pregnant belly silhouetted against the hallway light.
- Violet? Is that you? – her eyes widened. – Ah! You came to see Lily? How… delightful. – the word dripped with unspoken tension. – Come. I’ll make tea.
Violet hesitated, then nodded.
The kettle hissed as Marina poured, her hands steady despite the storm in her eyes. Violet sat across from her, fingers curled around the steaming cup. Marina didn’t look up.
- You didn’t come just to watch her sleep, did you?
- Hah. – Violet chuckled dryly. – You see through me too well.
- It’s about Lily. – Marina’s grip tightened. – Don’t tell me—
- In your condition, stress isn’t healthy. Stay calm, m’kay?
Marina slammed the teapot down.
- Just tell me what’s happening.
A beat. Then Violet sighed.
- Liliac’s in danger. Maybe. But don’t worry, I left extra help with her. Trust me. She’s in the right hands.
- And you? – Marina’s voice was ice. – Will you leave her again?
- Yup. Gonna hunt the bitch hunting her.
- I knew it! This is your fault—!
Violet’s cup cracked in her grip.
- Let’s not jump to conclusions. That Maya knew Lily was mine before I even met her. – her eyes flashed. – I’m cleaning up the mess now.
Marina trembled.
- But because of you, she’s in danger! If she wasn’t your child—!
Violet set the broken cup down.
- Keep your voice down. You’ll wake her. – she leaned back, smiling bitterly. – Irony, right? She’s hunted because she’s mine… but if she wasn’t, you’d have never met her. – she stood. – Hate me all you want. But I will make sure my problems don’t touch her. – at the door, she paused. – Goodnight, Marina.
Chapter 14: The King and His Wife
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 14 – The King and His Wife
The air in Nav' reeked of smoke and blood as Violet stepped over the smoldering remains of another rogue demon settlement. The ground crunched underfoot—charred bones and shattered weapons littered the battlefield. Veles stood at the center, wiping his crimson-stained hands on his cloak. His horns gleamed in the dim light, his smirk as sharp as ever.
- Any new intel?
- Afraid not. – Veles sighed. – But that’s another nest crushed. At this rate, Morana won’t have anyone left to send to Yav'.
- Unfortunately, that doesn’t get us any closer to her. We’re spinning our wheels here. – she shot him a glare. – And you, you’re supposed to be the lord of this hellhole. Can’t even track down one rogue goddess? Embarrassing.
- Hah! At least I’m not slacking off.
Violet’s eye twitched.
- Because someone has to keep our kid alive, and guess who that someone is?
- Eh, for me, she’s just—
Violet cut him off, mimicking his voice.
- ‘In this world, you either live or die’ bullshit. – she poked his chest. – You care. Otherwise, why bother hunting Morana at all?
- Hah. – Veles chuckled, catching her wrist. – You got me red-handed.
- You do care about her. – Violet smirked. – You just don’t wanna admit it.
-...Maybe. – a pause. Then, softer. – Say, Violet. After this is over… wanna start fresh? We could make another kid. – his thumb brushed her knuckles. – This time, they’d stay with us. No sending them away.
- Veles…
- Hah! Look at you. All flustered. – he tugged her closer. – You’re cute like that. That’s why I love you.
Violet exhaled, her cheeks warm.
- ...Me too, darling. – she leaned into him. – Yeah. Let’s make another one.
- Heck! Why stop at one? Let’s make three, no, five!
Violet rolled her eyes, but she was smiling.
- Let’s try with one first.
And then they kissed, there in the ruins of their enemies, the taste of ash and promise on their lips.
Chapter 15: Partner and Lover. Confession
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 15 – Partner and Lover. Confession
The skies of Prav' shimmered with golden light, the air crisp and charged with divine energy. Violet stood before Perun, his towering form radiating power, his blue wings flickering with electricity.
- Perun!
- Ah, you came. – Perun turned, his piercing blue eyes narrowing in amusement. – But what brings you here?
- One of Morana’s spawns is hunting my child. I need your help.
- Oh? – Perun raised an eyebrow. – Am I hearing a request for aid from the mighty Violet? That’s new.
- Not funny! She’s after Liliac. I’ll do anything to stop her, even beg on my knees before a god if I have to. – her voice dripped with venom. – You want that? Fine. I’ll grovel.
- No need for theatrics. I’ll listen.
Meanwhile, Vova’s group packed up their gear after another successful hunt, the cave still from the battle.
- Dammit! – Slava kicked a rock, scowling. – She stole another kill!
- Hah! – Petya laughed, clapping him on the back. – Admit it, she’s good.
- And we’re improving too. – Misha smirked. – Lucky she doesn’t hog all the strong demons.
Sonya adjusted her glasses, flipping through her notes.
- Statistically, our combat efficiency has increased by 1.5 times on average. Misha’s nearly doubled. Slava, however… 0.9 times.
- That’s because she—!
- Joking. Yours is just… slightly below average.
- Alright, enough chatter. – Petya stretched. – Let’s head—
A voice, cold and smooth, slithered from the shadows.
- I don’t think so.
Maya stepped into the clearing, her silver-violet aura casting eerie light across the trees.
- We meet again, Liliac.
Lily tensed, her crimson aura flickering to life.
- Go! I’ll hold her off!
The group hesitated, until Maya raised a hand.
- Wait. I’m not here to kill you. – her grin turned vicious. – Watching her die in front of you will be suffering enough.
- Maya, stop! – Lily stepped forward, her voice pleading. – I don’t want to hurt you! You’re misguided, let me help you!
- Oh, but I want to hurt you. Such a shame your mother won’t be here to see it. – her eyes burned. – I dreamed of this, her desperation as I squeeze the life from you. Delicious.
- No… It doesn’t have to end like this!
- Oh, but it will. – Maya’s aura exploded, violet flames licking the air.
Lily’s crimson aura surged in response, the ground cracking beneath her feet.
The battlefield was a blur of crimson and violet, the air crackling with the remnants of their clash. Lily panted, her body trembling from exhaustion, while Maya circled her like a predator, her silver-violet aura pulsing with malice.
- Please... let’s just talk!
- Too late for negotiations!
They clashed again, invisible to the naked eye, their movements leaving only afterimages in their wake. But this time, Lily was slowing down. When they reappeared, she was on one knee, gasping for breath. Maya loomed over her, grinning.
- Oh? Done already? Pathetic. – she twirled her blade. – Your mother promised me such delightful things… I’ll tell you all about them… while you scream.
She lunged. Crack! A wall of black spikes erupted from Lily’s shadow, forcing Maya to skid to a halt.
- Tch. Didn’t expect her to attach a shadow to you.
- Who—? – Lily blinked.
- Violet sent me. – Mavka’s voice slithered from the darkness.
- You mean the Legendary—
- Shut up! This isn’t a damn fairy tale! We need to run!
- Oh, I disagree! – Maya laughed.
She lunged again. Mavka morphed into a barricade of spikes, but Maya pivoted mid-air, slashing at Lily’s exposed side. Mavka’s tendrils lashed out, intercepting the strike, but this time, Maya’s violet flames seared the shadows. Mavka recoiled with a hiss. Maya’s grin widened.
- Oh? Last time, you were immune. What happened? – she tilted her head mockingly. – Don’t tell me… now that you’re cut off from Violet, you’re weaker.
- Damn it… Violet, hurry!
Meanwhile, in Prav'
Violet stiffened mid-sentence, her hand flying to her chest.
- What is it?
- Sorry, no time!
She dove through a portal, reappearing in Yav' in a burst of blue fire. The wind screamed as she raced toward Lily’s energy signature, her heart pounding.
- Please… don’t die!
Back with Lily
Maya rained blow after blow, her strikes shattering Mavka’s defenses. The shadow demon wrapped herself around Lily, taking hit after hit, her form flickering.
- DIE! DIE! DIE!
Mavka’s voice was strained.
- It’s bad… At this rate… she’ll break me.
- I’m sorry! – Lily choked back tears. – This is all because of me!
- Shut up, you idiot! – then, softer. – There’s… one last way.
Her body began to glow, not with Violet’s energy, but her own. A deep, black light pulsed from her core.
- Are you—?!
- Barely holding on. – Mavka’s voice was faint. – Listen, kid… Demons have one rule: Never get attached to humans. You’ll start to love them. Then you’ll want to protect them… – a shaky laugh. – Then you’ll die for them.
Her form trembled, cracks spreading through her shadowy body.
- I loved Violet… stupid jokes and all. Tell her… I loved her to the end.
- No! – Lily sobbed. – You tell her!
- Sorry, kid. This one’s… too much for me.
A single tear, warm, human, fell onto Lily’s cheek. Then. BOOM! A blast of pure shadow energy erupted, hurling Maya into the wall. The shockwave rippled through the cave…and Mavka was gone.
Maya staggered to her feet, panting, her violet aura flickering weakly. She wiped blood from her lip and grinned.
- Pathetic. That shadow died for nothing. – she raised her blade, its edge glinting in the dim light. – Now, Liliac—
WHAM!
A fist slammed into her gut, sending her crashing into the stone wall again. Dust rained from the impact as Violet stepped forward, her voice eerily calm.
- You alright, kid?
Lily trembled, tears streaking her face.
- Lady Violet, I—
- Don’t shake. I’m here. It’s over. – then, sharper. – Mavka. Come out.
Silence.
- Stop joking. – her voice cracked. – Remember our nights? Our battles? The stupid bets we made? – a shuddering breath. – We’re partners. You don’t get to leave.
Her knees hit the ground. Before her, golden dust, all that remained of Mavka, glistened in the dim light. A scream tore from Violet’s throat. Her violet-blue aura erupted, but this time, the blue crept upward, consuming the violet stopping halfway. Her eyes burned blue-hot, her power warping the air around her.
- W-What…? Is this—the Second Awakening?! No, it can’t be! Mother said—!
Violet’s head snapped toward her. Blink. Maya didn’t even see her move. One second, Violet was kneeling, the next, Maya’s skull cracked against the wall. Violet didn’t stop. Fists pummeled Maya’s gut, each strike faster than the last, bones splintering under the force. Maya gagged, blood spraying.
Crack! A bolt of lightning struck Violet’s back. It did nothing. She whipped around, nothing there. Instinct made her drive her fist right. Her hand pierced straight through the cloaked man’s chest. He gasped, his hood falling back. Red hair. Green eyes. Horns. Violet froze.
The man coughed blood, his fingers twitching, then, with his last breath Maya vanished. The corpse collapsed. Violet staggered back, falling to her knees. Her breath came in ragged, animalistic gasps.
- No. No, no, no—
Perun materialized beside her, his wings crackling.
- Violet! Are you—?
She didn’t answer. Just pointed at the body. Perun’s blood ran cold. The red hair. The horns. But the eyes. Green. Like Violet’s. Perun’s voice was hollow.
- This is impossible.
- Not now. Take it. Study it. Call Veles.
- You’re—?
- I’m fine.
He vanished with the corpse.
The cave was silent except for the distant drip of water and the ragged breaths of the two figures standing amidst the rubble. Violet pushed herself up from the ground, her new blue-violet aura flickering erratically. Her eyes locked onto Lily, who stood frozen, still processing Mavka's sacrifice.
Without a word, Violet strode forward and grabbed Lily’s wrist, her grip tight enough to bruise.
- Lady Violet?! – Lily yelped. – What are you, let go! It hurts!
- I won’t. – Violet didn’t loosen her hold. – Not now. Not ever.
- But it hurts—! – Lily pulled against her.
Violet whirled on her, her voice cracking.
- Listen, Liliac, if I let you go now, it’ll hurt both of us!
- I don’t understand! – Lily’s eyes welled with tears. – I want to go home! I want my Mama and Papa!
- There is no Mama and Papa anymore! You’re coming with me!
- But why?! Why are you doing this?!
Violet screamed, the words tearing from her throat:
- BECAUSE YOU’RE MY DAUGHTER!
Silence. Violet froze, her own words echoing off the cave walls. Slowly, her fingers uncurled, releasing Lily’s wrist. Lily stared at her, trembling.
- You’re… my Mother? You’re not… lying to me? – her voice broke. – But why? Why did you leave me?
-...It was the only way to protect you. I’m sorry, Liliac.
-...Mother. – a tear traced Lily’s cheek.
Violet swallowed hard.
- I didn’t want to tell you. I thought you’d hate me. That it would break you. – her hands shook. – Out of fourteen children… you were the last one left. I couldn’t lose you too. That’s why I sent you away, to them. You… you love them, don’t you?
Lily nodded mutely. Violet’s voice dropped to a whisper.
- But right now… I need you to stay with me. Please, Liliac. I’m begging you.
- At first… I thought the person who left me must’ve been awful. But then I realized… if not for her, I’d never have met Mama and Papa.
- Oh, Liliac…
- And then… I met you. – she sniffled. – You were kind to me. Too kind. I liked it, not just because you’re the Legendary Violet, but because… you felt close. – she took a deep breath. – Mother… I need time to think about all this. But for now… I’ll go with you.
- Oh, thank you, Liliac. – Violet choked back a sob. – My little storm.
And then she pulled Lily into a hug, gentle and warm, the way she’d always wanted to.
Chapter 16: L.Chapter 16 – The Dark Truth
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 16 – The Dark Truth
The grand halls of Prav's castle were silent, the air thick with tension. Beneath the cold, shimmering light of the celestial realm, three figures stood over the corpse, Perun, his wings folded tightly behind him; Veles, his crimson eyes narrowed in thought; and Violet, her hands clenched into fists. Behind them, Lily lingered near the arched doorway, her presence quiet but palpable.
- Are you certain about this? – Perun broke the silence first.
- Yup. – Violet didn’t hesitate. – That’s my son. I can feel it.
- But how? – Veles rubbed his temples. – I was sure Maya slaughtered all of them.
- How many bodies did we actually find?
- Ten. We assumed the others were… lost. Or destroyed.
Violet knelt beside the corpse, her fingers brushing the young man’s face, his red hair, his horns, his green eyes.
- This one never even used his powers. He should’ve healed. But he just… died. – her voice cracked. – I killed him. I killed my son.
Veles reached for her shoulder.
- Violet, please—
She shrugged him off. Perun crossed his arms.
- Assuming this is your child… what of the other two?
-...I don’t know. – Violet closed her eyes. – I hope they’re just corpses out there. I couldn’t… I couldn’t face them. – a pause. – But…
- But?
- It’s just a feeling. But think about it, me, Liliac, Maya… we all change forms like this. I thought it was just humans who stole or inherited demonic power. But I’ve never seen anyone else do it.
- You’re being vague. – Veles frowned.
- It’s a theory. And I hate it. But maybe… just maybe… Maya is our daughter too.
- That’s a bad joke, Violet.
- It’s not.
Perun studied the corpse, then Violet.
- Even her appearance is different. She doesn’t resemble either of you.
- True. But if not for that… I’d believe it. – her voice dropped. – Out of kindness… or just instinct… Liliac tried to talk to her. I don’t know. It’s… complicated.
- Alright, brother. – Veles turned to Perun. – Time for that genius of yours. In all your histories, were there others who stole demonic forms like Violet did?
- There were. But their transformations varied. Some became full monsters. Others only changed hair color, like Violet. Some showed no outward change at all. – he leveled a look at Violet. – Maya’s resemblance to your form doesn’t prove she’s your blood.
- And yet, that’s what I’m betting on.
- Why?
Violet glanced back at Lily, who stood silently in the shadows.
- Because Liliac feels it.
- You said yourself, that might just be her kindness.
- And yet… – she turned away abruptly. – I need air. Sorry.
The cool night air of Prav' wrapped around them as Lily approached Violet, who stood with her arms crossed, staring up at the shimmering celestial sky.
- Mother...
Violet didn’t turn, but her shoulders relaxed slightly.
- Liliac... Listen, I'm sorry for yelling at you earlier. ...I just couldn’t bear the thought of losing you.
- It’s fine, Mother. – Lily smiled, her rogue strand bouncing. – Although, I will say, having the Legendary Violet as my mom is super duper cool!
- Hah. Glad that attitude’s back.
A comfortable silence settled between them before Lily spoke again, softer this time.
- Ms. Mavka... what was she like? She was only with me for a few minutes, but... I want to know.
- Her? – Violet’s expression softened. – Usually aggressive, rude, and loud. But also... caring. She was the best partner you could ask for. Astonishing. Cool. And... uh, it’s too early for you to know that particular thing.
Lily giggled, then grew somber.
- She saved me from Maya. In her last moment... a tear fell. It was warm. Human.
- Huh. – Violet closed her eyes. – She did care about you. ...Stupid Mavka. Always playing the hero. – her voice wavered. – But because of that, you’re alive.
- Yes!
Violet smirked, forcing lightness into her tone.
- Y’know, there’s another story like that. A demon who got too attached to a human. Disappeared the same way. Iris’s little dragon, Zmey.
- Hmm? Iris? Your adopted daughter?
- You remember that?
- Of course! – Lily beamed. – I basically have a whole diary dedicated to you at this point!
- Huh. Interesting.
- What was she like? Iris?
- Oh, Iris? The opposite of you. Cold. Stoic. Your look could melt hearts, hers could freeze them. Nerdy, too. Still love her to death. Hope she’s doing better than her dumb mother.
- Hehe, she sounds fun! Maybe we could meet someday!
- Her? Fun? Please. Her idea of fun was locking herself in a library with a pile of books. As for meeting... doubt it. She’d probably say something like, ‘There’s only a 0.127% chance of her return.’
Lily giggled again, but her smile faded.
-...Mother?
- Hmm? – Violet glanced at her. – Something’s bothering you.
- It’s... Maya.
Violet sighed.
- Figured as much. Listen, Liliac, it’s a tiny chance she’s actually related to us. I don’t even have proof. Just a feeling.
- But if she is... what will you do?
- She killed Mav. I don’t know. Even if she is my daughter.
- I see...
Violet reached out, flicking her rogue strand.
- Hey, chin up! Gloomy faces don’t suit you. Even your rogue strand looks depressed. Heh. Just like mine, except mine doesn’t wiggle.
- Hehe. – Lily’s strand twitched on cue, making her laugh.
- Listen, Liliac. – Violet squeezed her shoulder. – I’ll talk to your parents. Reassure them you’re safe with me.
- Okay! ...After this is all over, what will you do? I want to stay with you!
- Already trading your real parents for me and Veles? You barely know us.
- No! I meant, you could live with us! As one big family!
- Sorry, kid. That’s not happening. You’ll stay with them.
- But—!
- No ‘buts.’ It’s better this way. But I promise I’ll visit often. Maybe even help with your guild requests.
Lily’s rogue strand perked up.
- Hehe. Thanks, Mother.
Somewhere in Nav’
The dim cavern echoed with the slow, ragged breaths of Maya, her body sprawled across the cold stone floor. Blood trickled from her lips as her wounds knitted themselves together, too slowly. The violet flames of her aura sputtered weakly, like a dying candle.
Morana loomed over her, her silhouette cutting through the gloom. Her voice was a blade wrapped in silk.
- You disappoint me, Maya.
Maya flinched.
- Your task was simple, find and kill one of the Creator’s sons. Instead, you wasted your chance on Violet’s brat. And now, because of your failure, we’ve lost Baron too.
Maya coughed, crimson splattering the rock beneath her.
- That woman… Second Awakening… Her shadow demon—
- What? – Morana went utterly still.
- I don’t… know how… but her hair…half blue now—
A long silence. Then Morana sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose.
- No matter. We can still win this. – she gestured dismissively. – Rest. My forces will distract Veles in Nav’. He doesn’t realize I’ve been under his nose this entire time.
- Who… should I… kill? – Maya grimaced, pushing herself up on trembling arms.
- Between Perun and Veles? Veles is the easier target. Perun is too… rigid. Veles? He doesn’t take battles seriously. It would be your advantage. – she paused, then smiled coldly. – Or it would be, if you hadn’t just shown Violet how terrifying you can be. Now they’re prepared. – she leaned down, her breath ghosting over Maya’s ear. – Forget Violet’s daughter. After today, the girl will be shielded. Unless you want to die, stick to the plan.
Maya bowed her head, her voice barely audible.
-...Sorry… Mother.
Chapter 17: The Split
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 17 – The Split
The group stood outside Lily’s home, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across the yard. Violet crossed her arms, laying out the plan with her usual no-nonsense tone.
- Alright, Veles, we talk to the parents, then we split. You and Perun scour Nav’, every damn corner. Me and Liliac will handle Yav’. – she smirked. – Good thing the kid’s fast.
- Hey, not fair! – Veles pouted, his crimson eyes flicking to Lily. – Why do you get Liliac? I want my daddy hours too!
- You didn’t even lift a finger to find her! – then, softer. – Next time. Promise.
Veles sighed dramatically.
- Sure thing, Violet...
Lily, meanwhile, was busy staring at Veles’s horns, her rogue strand bouncing excitedly.
- Are you really my dad? Wow! I wish I had horns like yours, they’re super duper cool!
- Heh, thanks, kid. But looks like you got your mom’s genes mostly.
- And that’s perfect. – Violet smirked. – Less resemblance to you.
- Excuse you—
The door swung open, cutting him off. Marina stood there, arms crossed, eyebrow raised.
- Ah. Violet. And Lily, my girl. – her gaze swept over them. – What brings you here arguing on my porch?
- I’m taking Lily under my protection for a while. Could be days, maybe weeks. Depends how long this mess takes. – her voice hardened. – Her last protector died saving her. I’m the best shield she’s got now.
- And you? – Marina turned to Lily. – Is this what you want?
- Hehe, I’m fine, Mama! – Lily beamed. – And guess what? Violet’s my super duper legendary mother! And this guy? – she pointed at Veles. – My super duper cool dad! Awesome, right?
- So… you know. – Marina’s expression softened.
Lily hugged her tightly.
- Don’t be sad! I’ll always be your daughter too. Forever!
- Oh, Lily...
Violet cleared her throat.
- We’ll handle the threat. Then she’ll come back. Promise.
- You better.
- Heh. And hopefully by then, you’ll have popped out that baby. You’re stressing too much. – she ruffled Lily’s hair. – Relax. She’s with me, meaning she’s super duper safe.
- Hehe.
Marina sighed, but smiled.
- Good luck, Lily. Violet.
As they walked away, Veles stretched lazily.
- Well, guess this is where we part ways. Off I go!
Violet grabbed his wrist.
- Wait. – her voice dropped. – Stay safe. Remember, you promised me five babies.
- I thought we agreed on one?
- Changed my mind. Now let’s end this shitshow.
With a salute, Veles vanished into a swirl of shadows. Lily tugged Violet’s sleeve.
- Mother… does that mean I’ll have brothers and sisters?
- Sure, if that loser remembers how to make ’em. – she cracked her knuckles. – Now move. With your speed, this won’t take long.
Chapter 18: The Brother’s Search
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 18 – The Brother’s Search
Veles leaned against a broken pillar, arms crossed, his crimson eyes scanning the horizon. His smirk was ever-present, but tension coiled beneath his playful tone.
- You know, brother… kinda weird you being here? I mean, you’re the one who threatened to purge every single demon in this place.
Perun didn’t look at him, his icy blue gaze fixed on the distance. His wings, small, feathered, and crackling with faint electricity, twitched in irritation.
- That’s all in the past, and you know that.
- Yeah, yeah. But teasing wouldn’t hurt anybody. – a pause. His smirk faded slightly. – Still though. We’ve scanned pretty much all of Nav’, and we’ve got nothing. No traces of Maya. No traces of Morana. No traces of anything, actually! We smashed these lackeys’ settlements, but still… nothing. – he turned to Perun, his voice dropping. – You sure she’s not in Prav’? This is the last place we didn’t scan.
- I told you before, access to Prav’ is defended heavily. Any intruder would’ve been spotted. Besides, I checked it multiple times already. Nothing.
Veles groaned, running a hand through his hair.
- At this point, we gotta admit, she’s good.
- Maybe so. But we can’t give up. Ready to go back?
- Yeah, yeah. – Veles waved him off. – Just give me a second to admire my beautiful castle. – he gestured grandly toward the distant, jagged silhouette of his fortress.
- I’ll be waiting for you in Prav’.
Veles blinked.
-...My beautiful castle. That’s it! Perun, I—! – he glanced around. – Eh? He already left? – he sighed, shaking his head. – Guess I should follow him.
Then. A voice, smooth as poisoned silk, cut through the silence.
- Not so fast.
Veles turned. There she stood, silver hair gleaming, blue eyes cold. Her lips curled into a vicious smile as purple energy flickered at her fingertips.
- I think you have something I need.
- Heh. So, you're the one who tried to kill my daughter, eh? – he flexed his fingers, shadows coiling around his wrists. – I might not be as ruthless as Violet when it comes to protecting what’s mine… but that doesn’t mean I’ll have mercy on you.
- Likewise.
Veles tilted his head, studying her.
- But before I smash you into the ground… tell me something. Does my face remind you of someone? Maybe a father figure you’ve long lost?
- The only thing I see is the power I need. The power that will let me crush Violet.
- Yup. – Veles sighed, shaking his head. – Sorry, Liliac… looks like your gut was wrong.
With a flick of his wrist, Volchok, his massive earth axe, materialized in his grip. The ground trembled beneath him. Maya blasted forward, her aura exploding in a violet storm. She lunged. And Veles blocked effortlessly, his axe deflecting her blade with a deafening clang. He countered with a brutal fist to her ribs, but she twisted mid-air, slashing at his back. He blocked again. She became a blur of steel, striking from every angle, but every hit met Volchok’s unyielding edge.
Finally, she reappeared, panting, her aura flickering. Veles stared at her, his voice hollow.
- Useless. You caused my wife pain. You tormented Liliac. You murdered my children. And still… it wasn’t enough for you. – his grip tightened on Volchok. – I’ll end this now.
He slammed the axe into the ground. Spikes of black earth erupted, spearing upward, but Maya leapt just in time. Predictable. Veles was already in the air, swinging down. She barely blocked, the force sending her crashing into the ground. He didn’t let up. Swing. Block. Swing. Block. Each strike hit harder. Each parry cost her more. Then. A devastating punch to her gut sent her flying, skidding across the battlefield. Maya coughed blood, her hands shaking.
- Ghh… How can you be this strong?! I need… more power!
Veles stalked forward, Volchok dragging behind him.
- Accept your fate, you moron. You’re wasting your breath.
Maya’s eyes burned.
- MORE… POWER!
Her aura erupted, a violent, all-consuming violet storm. The very air stilled, as if time itself froze. Veles stood motionless, but his mind raced.
- No… It can’t be… That’s Violet’s—
Then. A click of Maya’s sheath. Time snapped back. Veles staggered, blood gushing from countless wounds.
- This… isn’t your technique… That’s Violet’s. – his voice was barely a whisper. – Then that would mean…
- What are you mumbling about? Die already!
With a final, brutal thrust, her blade pierced his throat. Veles collapsed, his crimson eyes dimming.
- Violet… Liliac… I’m so sorry… I was too reckless… Violet… dear… forgive me…
His body still. His breath gone.
Maya stood over him, chest heaving. Then, she smiled. She extended her hand, fingers trembling with dark energy. Veles’s body began to dissolve, turning into crimson dust, swirling into her palm. She absorbed him. Every last ember of his power. Every memory. Every drop of divine blood. Until nothing remained. Silence. Then Maya laughed. A hysterical, broken sound, echoing through Nav’s ruins.
- Hah… Hahaha… HAHAHAHA!
She clutched her chest, her violet aura pulsing with newfound strength.
- Finally… FINALLY!
Violet stopped mid-step. A heartbeat, wrong, heavy, final, echoed in her chest. Her breath hitched. Then. She collapsed, knees slamming into the earth, fingers clawing into the dirt.
- N-no… It can’t be! – her voice broke into a whisper, then a sob. – How… could this happen…?
- Mother?! What’s wrong?!
Violet trembled, her usual confidence shattered. Her violet hair tangled over her face as she curled inward.
- Veles… He’s—! – she choked, hands pressing against her chest as if to stop the pain. – Gone.
- F-Father?! – Lily staggered.
Violet didn’t scream. She didn’t roar with rage. She folded, forehead pressing into the grass, shoulders shaking.
- You promised… – her voice was raw, barely audible. – Five babies, you idiot… Five…
A whimper escaped, small, broken, human. Lily dropped beside her, clutching her mother’s tunic, her own tears mixing with Violet’s silent agony.
Prav’s gleaming halls, the air crackled with storm energy. The portal ripped open. Maya stepped out. Her silver hair was now half-violet, her aura a violent storm of purple. Her eyes, wide, unhinged, locked onto Perun. Perun turned, Gromovik humming with electricity.
- You… This is forbidden. – his voice was quiet. Deadly.
Maya tilted her head, arms swaying.
- Hehe… One dead. One left.
Perun’s wings snapped open, lightning arcing between them.
- You killed my brother. – no shout. Just finality. – We were not so close… but he was blood.
Maya giggled, lurching forward.
- I ate one god… But the ruler of Prav’? – she licked her lips. – A Third Awakening perhaps? Ahaha—!
- You will die for this!
Chapter 19: Third Awakening
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 19 – Third Awakening
Violet and Lily stepped through the portal. The sight hit them like a blade to the gut. Perun lay on the ground, his blue hair matted with blood, his body barely conscious.
Maya stood over him, her violet aura pulsing with stolen power. Violet didn’t hesitate. She lunged. Her sword slammed into Maya’s with a force that sent the silver-haired killer skidding back, boots screeching against stone.
- You take everything from me, and it’s still not enough?! When will you stop, monster?!
Their blades clashed, sparks flying. Then Maya saw it. Real-time transformation. The remaining half of Violet’s violet hair shifted to blue, completing the transition. Her eyes, once gleaming with blue fire, returned to their natural green, cold, furious, human.
Maya’s mind raced. How?! She didn’t consume a god. Is it rage? Grief?!
Violet didn’t give her time to think. She slashed. Maya dodged, but barely. Then. Violet vanished. No blur. No afterimage. Just. Gone. The first strike came from the left. The second from the right. The third from behind. Maya couldn’t track her. It was like Violet didn’t exist in this space, only her blade did. Slash. Slash. Slash. 100 hits. 400. 900. 1,700. 4,000. 9,000 strikes in 5 seconds. Maya screamed, her body shredded by invisible cuts. She collapsed, blood pooling beneath her. Violet reappeared, her sword dripping.
- Your father’s minions took my parents. You took my children. My love. My partner. – her voice shook. – You have no reason to live, daughter.
Maya’s eyes widened.
- W-what did you just say?!
- The feeling from you. Your blood. Now I’m sure, you’re my child. But it won’t matter anymore. Today, you die, scum.
She raised her blade and recoiled as a barrier slammed between them. A figure stepped forward. Tall. Silver-haired. Blue-eyed. Morana. She smirked, looking down at Maya.
- I see you picked a fight with Violet again? And look at you, so beat up.
- M-Mother… What is the meaning of this?! – Maya coughed blood. – Why did you come?!
- I came to take back what’s mine.
- But—
- Ah, you want answers first? Very well. – Morana’s smile widened. – You’re probably conflicted about why Violet called you her daughter, right? Well… she isn’t wrong.
Maya froze.
- You see, you are her child. The first-born, in fact! I stole you from her. Planted fake memories about your ‘father.’ Gave you a new face, a new name. Your strive for vengeance was perfect. – a pause. – Too bad you sometimes disobeyed me and went straight for Violet. But it’s different now. I’m proud of you… though I wish you’d gotten Perun’s powers as well. – she sighed, glancing at Violet. – Seems like it’ll be complicated with her around.
Then Morana extended her hand. Maya screamed as her body dissolved, her essence ripped away. Violet snapped forward, but they vanished. The battlefield fell silent.
Violet stumbled to Perun’s side. His breathing was shallow, his wings shattered.
- Why aren’t you healing?!
Perun chuckled, blood staining his lips.
- It’s… too late for that. Heh… Funny. I always wondered… where gods go after death. It’s not Prav’… or Nav’… right? – his voice faded. – Sorry, Violet… I went ahead… recklessly. I couldn’t… protect him.
- It’s alright, Perun… I…
Perun’s gaze shifted to Lily.
- May I… grant your daughter… my powers?
Violet nodded, silent. Perun smiled, weakly.
- Liliac… I’m sorry. For most of my life… I ignored my brother. Violet… but now… I realize… how wrong I was.
His body glowed, blue energy coalescing into dust.
- Please… accept my power.
The energy flowed into Lily, her crimson eyes flaring with newfound strength. She sobbed, clutching her chest.
- I will, Uncle… Thank you…
Perun closed his eyes. And let go.
Violet sighed, her shoulders slumping.
-...Should’ve stayed with Iris.
- Mother?
Violet’s voice was hollow, her green eyes staring at nothing.
- What is this mess? I lost everything. Absolutely everything. My husband. My children. My partner… – a pause. Then jer gaze flickered to Lily, softening. – But. I’ve got you. I’m not completely alone. – she reached out, cupping Lily’s face. – Liliac, dear… please, help your mother fix her mistake.
Lily didn’t hesitate. She threw her arms around Violet, clinging tightly.
- I will, Mother.
For a moment, they stood there, two broken souls holding each other together. Then, Violet pulled back, running a hand through her hair, now permanently blue, the last remnant of her Third Awakening.
- Strange. I can’t get my hair back to normal. Is it gonna stay blue forever?
- Hehe, that actually suits you quite well! – Lily grinned, her rogue strand bouncing.
- Thanks.
Lily’s crimson eyes sparkled as she flexed her fingers, Perun’s power coursing through her.
- I feel like… I can heal more now. Even you, you know? Isn’t that super duper neat?
- Yeah, it is. – Violet nodded, a ghost of a smirk on her lips.
Lily twirled, and Gromovik materialized in her hand, Perun’s spear, crackling with faint lightning.
- Oh, and this thing! Don’t know exactly how to use it yet, but we’ll figure it out!
Violet watched her, a flicker of pride cutting through the grief. Then, her expression hardened.
- I wonder where to now. – she sighed, staring at the horizon. – Now, we’re all alone, little storm. I wonder what’ll happen to this world…
A beat. Then. She extended her hand, commanding the shadows. Her own silhouette rippled, then detached, forming a copy of herself, colored, not shadowy like Mavka’s, but eerily silent.
- What is this, Mother?
- Mavka’s power… or the unemotional piece of mess that’s left after her. No Mavka. Not a sign. But… it’s all that remains.
She turned to Lily, her green eyes burning with resolve.
- We move to Nav’. You’d better be morally prepared. This is our last battle. I won’t let you die. That’s a vow.
Chapter 20: Family Bath
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 20 – Family Bath
Violet stopped in front of the castle gates, her blue hair stirring in the wind.
- Your father suspected Morana was hiding here. Unfortunately… it was too late.
Her gaze drifted to the right, where a familiar hut sat, its walls weathered but warm.
- Mother, do you know that place?
- Yeah. – a ghost of a smile tugged at Violet’s lips. – Back when I was just Mia, no powers, no demons, just a sword and a death wish, I challenged the granny who lived there. Turns out she wasn’t as evil as the rest of Chernobog’s lackeys. – she crossed her arms, her voice softening. – She surrendered, then offered me a place to rest. Nostalgic, huh? Back when things were… simpler.
- Do you wanna visit her?
Violet reached out, flicking Lily’s rogue strand playfully.
- I think we can afford it. Also, chin up! That gloomy face of yours reminds me of Iris. I like it better when you smile.
- Hehe, I’ll try! – Lily grinned, her crimson eyes lighting up.
- Don’t worry. I’ve already planted a piece of Mavka’s power in your shadow. This time, it’ll protect you properly. – a pause. – ...Not that she didn’t before.
She shook her head, forcing lightness back into her voice.
- Alright, enough sadness. We’re visiting granny. You’re gonna love her.
They approached the hut, its wooden door creaking ominously even before Violet knocked. A raspy voice snapped from inside:
- Who in Veles’ name is bothering me?! You better not be another goblin, or I’ll incinerate you!
The door swung open, revealing a hunched figure with wild gray hair and eyes sharp as knives.
- Mia?! Oh, how I’ve missed that stubborn face! Finally decided to visit your old babushka?
- Sort of like that. Mind if we come in?
- Of course! – Yaga’s gaze shifted to Lily. – But who’s this fiery little thing?
- My daughter. – Violet said, nudging Lily forward. – Liliac. And, by extension, Veles’s too.
- Ah! – Yaga’s eyebrows shot up. – So you’re the infamous wife of Veles! How is our king these days?
-...He’s dead.
- My condolences.
- And what do you mean infamous? – Violet frowned. – I don’t remember causing trouble here.
- Hah! – Yaga waved a hand, chuckling. – Let your babushka laugh a little. How’s the little ones? Heard Veles had a whole brood of heirs running around.
-...They were all murdered. Liliac’s the only one left.
- Ah. – Yaga winced. – Pulling all the wrong strings today, aren’t I? – she stepped aside, ushering them in. – Well, come in! Tell me about yourself, and your journeys.
The hut’s interior was cluttered with jars of pickled… things, hanging herbs, and a crackling fire. The scent of stew wafted through the air, oddly comforting. As Lily peered around in awe, Violet let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding.
Yaga poured the tea, the dark liquid swirling into chipped porcelain cups.
- So. – she grinned, gold teeth glinting. – Tell me what you really came for.
- I’m here to murder Morana. She should be holed up in the castle.
- Maybe.
- You don’t know?
- Heh. Ever since you defeated that oaf Chernobog, she vanished. Didn’t know she’d been squatting in my backyard all this time. – Yaga leaned forward. – But you, you’ve changed. Last time I saw you, you were just a reckless brat with a sword.
- You’ve relocated too. I don’t know how I missed you before.
Yaga cackled, waving at the walls.
- Forgot this is a hut on chicken legs, devochka? We migrate! After your little… incident with the Tower in Yav’, I had time to return. Veles offered me a place here.
- How unlike him. I thought he didn’t care back then.
- Oh, he didn’t! – Yaga wheezed with laughter. – That fool king pointed me to a swamp and said, ‘This suits you better, babushka!’
- Yeah, that’s the bastard I remember.
- But it was peaceful there. Too peaceful. No fun when nothing tries to eat you! – Yaga sighed wistfully, then noticed Violet’s hair. – Ah. Explain the new color. What, did you dye it? Youth these days, always trying to impress with bizarre looks.
- Let’s just say I got an… upgrade.
Yaga turned to Lily, who was nibbling a honey cake.
- And you, Liliac? What’s your story?
- I’m a demon hunter! – Lily perked up, crumbs on her cheeks. – A merc! But I don’t hunt nice babushkas like you, only the evil ones!
- In that case, I’ve got a job! A pack of gremlins’ve been gnawing on my fence. Clean them up, and I’ll pay you in enchanted vareniki!
- Hihi! Only if you throw in extra salo!
Violet stretched, cutting in.
- Is the banya ready?
- But of course! Finish your tea, and I’ll steam the lies out of you both.
Later in banya
Violet kneeled behind Lily, a rough washcloth in hand, scrubbing gentle circled over her daughter’s back. The fire crackled in the corner, casting flickering shadows across their faces. Violet’s hands paused, the washcloth hovering over Lily’s shoulder.
-...Do you mind if I do this? – her voice was quieter than usual, almost hesitant.
Lily twisted slightly to grin at her, her cheeks already flushed from the heat.
- Actually? Not at all! I love it when you do this!
- That pleases me. – a faint smile tugged at Violet’s lips. – I always wanted to… to take care of you like this. – her grip tightened on the cloth. – Unfortunately, I never got the chance.
Lily leaned back into her touch, humming.
- But you can now! So rub away, Mom!
- Hah. – Violet chuckled, the sound rough but warm. – Mom? Iris always called me just Mother. – she dipped the cloth into the bucket, wringing it out. – I’m so happy to have you both.
- Hihi, hopefully I can meet her one day!
- Tell you what, once this is over, we can try to travel to Fodlan. – a beat. – ...Although.
- Although?
- Although I wouldn’t go. – Violet’s voice dropped, low and firm. – The gaps in time between worlds are too vast. Two minutes there could mean days here. I can’t… leave this world unattended.
- Hehe, glad you’re so confident we’ll win, Mom.
Violet’s fingers brushed a strand of wet hair from Lily’s neck.
- I will do anything to make sure we do. Not just for this world. For you. Primarily for you.
- Aww, Mom… you’re making me blush!
Violet smiled, genuine and soft, a rare sight these days.
- Tell me. – she murmured, resuming her scrubbing. – What are your plans after this?
- Probably stay at the guild! If there’s any work left, anyway.
- Doubt it. I’ll purge anyone who even thinks of scheming evil after this.
- Well, in that case, we’ll just hunt bandits!
- Yes. – Violet’s touch lingered at the base of Lily’s spine. – It’ll be peaceful here. More or less. – her voice hardened, just slightly. – I’ll make sure of it.
- Hehe. And I believe in you.
-...Thank you.
A pause. Then.
- Now, move your butt up. I’m cleaning that too.
- M-Mom! – Lily squeaked, crimson eyes widening. – That I can do myself!
- Don’t argue, Liliac. – Violet flicked her ear playfully. – Just relax… and do what I say.
Lily groaned, but obediently shifted, her face now fully scarlet.
-...Okay.
Chapter 21: Morana’s Zmey
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 21 – Morana’s Zmey
The grand hall leading to Veles’ throne room, now a crumbling ruin of obsidian and shattered chandeliers. The air reeked of sulfur and old blood. Before the towering doors stood Zmey Gorynych, the three-headed dragon-king, his scales glinting like rusted armor. His six eyes locked onto Violet and Lily, flames licking between his fangs.
- You shall not pass! – Zmey slammed his tail, shaking the ground. – For I am the King of All Zmeys!
Violet glanced at Lily, her blue hair stirring in the heat.
- Another one of their kin. Liliac, I’ll leave him to you. I’ll face Morana myself. – a pause. – Good luck.
- Okay, Mom!
Zmey roared, but Violet was already gone, vanished past him in a blur, her fist slamming one of his heads aside mid-lunge. The dragon howled as his own skull smashed into the wall beside Lily. Without a word, Violet slipped through the throne room doors.
Zmey whirled, enraged.
- You dare mock me?!
- So you’re Zmey Gorynych! – Lily tilted her head, crimson eyes sparkling. – Mom told me about your kind! You’ve got brothers, right? I’ve got two siblings too, well, had, because soon there’ll be another! Wanna talk about them?
Zmey hissed, smoke curling from his nostrils.
- Your insolence will cost you more than you can imagine!
He breathed fire and Lily dodged, cartwheeling aside with a laugh.
- But I want to talk! You probably had beef with your brothers, huh? I get it, I quarrel with my sister all the time! Still love her, though!
Zmey lunged, jaws snapping, nut Lily disappeared, reappearing on his back.
- Oh my God! – she gasped, running a hand over his scales. – Your wings are so pretty! Wanna be my pet? I’ve always wanted a dragon!
Zmey thrashed, twisting like a cat in water, but Lily clung on, giggling.
- Wheee! This is awesome! Let’s play more!
Zmey snarled, his pride wounded.
- How dare you mock the King?!
- I’m not! – Lily pouted, then accidentally decapitated a head with a wild swing of Gromovik. – Oops. Sorry! Didn’t mean to!
Zmey screamed, blood gushing.
- That power… You’re not just a human!
- You just noticed? Rude!
Zmey sniffed, his remaining heads recoiling.
- That smell… I recognize it! Veles’s blood!
- You know my father?! – Lily beamed. – Then we have to be friends!
- STOP MOCKING ME!
- Again. – Lily sighed, decapitating another head. – I’m not.
The dragon collapsed, his second head rolling with a thud. Lily hopped off, dusting her hands.
- Now you’re just a regular dragon. Not even a fun one anymore.
She glanced at the throne room doors.
- Good luck, Mother.
Chapter 22: Morana
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 22 – Morana
The throne room of Nav’, now a hollow shell of its former grandeur. Shattered obsidian pillars loomed like broken teeth, and the air hummed with residual demonic energy. At the center, Maya stood, no longer silver-haired, but with Violet’s violet locks and green eyes, a twisted mirror of the child she once was.
Violet stepped forward, her boots crunching on broken stone. Maya lunged, a desperate, wordless snarl tearing from her throat. Violet didn’t flinch. She rammed Shooting Star through Maya’s chest in one fluid motion. Maya gasped, blood bubbling at her lips.
- Mother… I’m… sorry…
Violet yanked the blade free and walked past, her expression unreadable. On the throne, Morana clapped, her smirk sharp as a knife.
- Ohoho~! How does it feel, Violet? Killing your own kin again?
- Nothing.
- Oh? – Morana leaned forward. – Not even a little grief? You did just slaughter your daughter.
- I feel… a little. – Violet finally faced her. – But she was already a puppet.
- And your son? The one you killed before her? Still nothing?
- If you’re trying to provoke me, you’re doing a shit job. – her voice dropped. – I have one question. Why?
- Why kill your kin? Or why make you face them?
- No. – Violet’s eyes burned. – All of it. The invasion. The power grabs. Is it just to rule?
Morana laughed, the sound like shattering glass.
- Indeed it is! What else is there? Conquest is the only true purpose of our kind!
- And yet… you were human once.
- Perhaps. But why does that concern you?
- Because humans have something demons lack. – Violet raised her blade. – A heart. And yours is too rotten to save. – she exhaled. – So I’ll rip it out. For Veles. For Perun. For Mavka. For Maya. For everyone who suffered because of you. – her voice hardened. – I’ll purge you.
As the last word left her lips a blast of aura erupted from Violet’s body. Her hair bleached white, her irises shifting to glacial blue. A white aura swirled around her, and her clothes melted into a sleek black ensemble, thighs and arms exposed, the fabric clinging like a second skin. Violet staggered, staring at her hands.
- W-what is this…? Is that—? No, it can’t be! – she clutched her chest. – I… I can feel them. Mavka. Veles. Perun. Maya. My children—!
- WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?! WHAT TRICK IS THIS?! – Morana screeched, lurching to her feet.
- Huh. – Violet smirked, flexing her fingers. – I barely got used to my Third Awakening… but this? – she laughed, low and dangerous. – This feels stronger.
Morana panicked, slamming her palm into the floor. The throne room dissolved, replaced by an endless void, a realm of nothingness.
- NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO, RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!
Tentacles exploded from Morana’s back, lashing toward Violet, but Violet didn’t move. She cut them down with her bare hands, each strike precise, effortless. Morana snarled, conjuring a massive energy ball above her.
- DIE!
Violet summoned her sword, but it wasn’t Shooting Star. This blade gleamed violet, its curve like a wo dao but larger, its ricasso exaggerated and pulsing with purple light. It hummed in her grip, warm and alive. She smiled. As the energy ball surged toward her, she slashed and the ball shattered, the backlash hurling Morana into the crumbling throne.
Violet appeared behind her, her new sword piercing Morana’s heart. The void collapsed, reality snapping back into place. Morana coughed blood, her eyes wide.
- Grh—! H-how…?!
Violet leaned close, her voice a whisper.
- Feel that warmth, Morana? That’s the people you took from me. Perun said gods don’t go to Prav’ or Nav’… – she twisted the blade. – I hope it sends you somewhere worse.
With a final yank, she freed her sword. Morana collapsed, her last breath a rasp.
- How… could I… lose…?
Violet exhaled.
Chapter 23: Birth of a Goddess
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 23 – Birth of a Goddess
Violet stepped out, her white hair and blue eyes gleaming under the dim light, her new violet-and-black sword resting at her hip. Lily sprinted toward her, crashing into her with a hug so tight it nearly knocks the wind out of both of them. Lily buried her face in Violet’s chest, her voice muffled by fabric.
- Mother! I was so worried! – she pulled back, tears streaking her soot-smudged cheeks. – Especially when I heard the blasts—!
- It’s okay, little storm. – Violet cupped her face, thumb brushing away a tear. – It’s over.
- Your hair! And your eyes! What happened?!
Violet shrugged, though her grip on Lily’s shoulder tightened.
- I don’t know. But first. – she nodded toward the throne room. – We need to go back.
Morana’s corpse lay where it fell, her lifeless eyes staring at the shattered ceiling. Violet gestured.
- Take it.
- What do you mean?
- The same way you absorbed Perun. Extract your father’s essence from her.
Lily swallowed, then extended her hand. Crimson energy coiled around her fingers as she pulled, drawing a wisp of shadowy red from Morana’s chest. It pulsed in her palm, warm as embers.
- It’s… so warm. – she whispered.
- Your bastard father actually cared for you.
Lily grinned, tucking the essence into her own chest.
- I felt it! But. – she poked Violet’s arm. – You still haven’t explained this! I just got used to the blue hair!
Violet sighed, then spoke to the air.
- Khronos.
A voice echoed in both their minds, ancient and amused.
- Ah, I see you’ve finished, Violet! Didn’t even need to send aid.
- With all the sacrifices, it would’ve been nice.
- Sorry, Violet. Their fates were—
- Figured as much. – she interrupted. – But more importantly, what am I now?
A pause. Then.
- It’s simple, really. Try not to collapse. You’ve become a god.
- My mother did WHAT?! – Lily gasped, stars in her eyes. – As if she wasn’t cool enough!
Violet pinched the bridge of her nose.
- Explain. Now.
- Most gods are born divine. But some ascend, through struggle, pain, loss… and the bonds they forge. You gave people hope. They prayed for you, fought for you. In that final moment, their faith made you this.
Violet exhaled, long and slow.
- I don’t like titles. Can I just go back to being Violet?
- That’s your choice. But their prayers will stay with you.
Lily bounced, clutching Violet’s arm.
- Mom, it’s super duper cool! You’re literally legendary now!
- If you like it. – she tilted her head, addressing Khronos again. – Thanks. I’ll… reflect. Then decide. – she turned, tugging Lily toward the exit. – Let’s go. Your parents are probably waiting.
Marina’s voice called from inside, warm and exasperated.
- It’s probably Sasha again, tracking mud—
The door swung open and Lily launched herself into Marina’s arms, nearly knocking her over. Marina staggered, then clutched her tightly, her voice cracking.
- Lily… You’re alive…
- Of course she is. – Violet crossed her arms, leaning against the doorframe. – I was with her.
Marina blinked, taking in Violet’s transformed appearance, the godly radiance, the exposed arms and thighs, the unfamiliar violet-black sword at her hip. Her eyes narrowed.
- You are… Who are you? And what in the world are you wearing? Suit yourself until my son sees you!
- Hehe, this is Violet, Mama! – Lily giggled, still clinging to her.
- Violet?! – Marina gaped. – Did she dye?
- Worse, actually. – Violet groaned. – Liliac, don’t you dare—
- Hehe, okay~! – Lily mimed zipping her lips.
Violet shook her head.
- You don’t need the details. Like I promised, once this was over, I’d bring her back. – she stepped back. – Farewell, Marina.
- Violet, wait! – Marina lunged, grabbing her wrist.
Violet paused, glancing over her shoulder. Marina’s grip trembled.
- You protected Lily. And you returned her, just as you said… How can we ever repay you?
- Well… All I ask is that you stop hating me. That’s enough.
She turned to leave and froze. A familiar figure stood at the gate, silver hair gleaming in the sunlight. Maya. Her eyes, once cold and cruel, were now wide and uncertain. Violet’s breath hitched.
-...What are you doing here?
- Mother… I…
Violet looked back at Lily, who smiled, nodding encouragingly. Violet exhaled, then walked forward, stopping in front of Maya. She placed a hand on her shoulder, gentle, but firm.
- I’m sorry, Mia. – her voice broke, just once. – I failed you. – a pause. – Hah. The only good memory I have of you… is us choosing your name. I suggested ‘Mia’, the name I used long ago. Your father just laughed and agreed.
- Mother… – Mia’s eyes filled with tears.
- I’m sorry, kid. – Violet pulled her into a brief, fierce hug. – I failed you as a mother. I couldn’t protect you. – she released her, stepping back. – Stay with Lily. It’s better for you.
And with that, she walked away, her white hair gleaming like a ghost in the sunlight.
Chapter 24: Lone Goddess
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 24 – Lone Goddess
The towering throne room of Prav’, its crystalline spires stretching into an endless sky. Violet slouched on Perun’s former throne, her bare thighs leaving damp imprinted on the polished silver seat, her white hair spilling over the armrest like spilled moonlight. The air hummed with the distant flutter of angel wings, but no one dared approach the new god-queen.
Violet exhaled, her elbow propped on the throne’s arm, chin resting on her fist.
- Still feels weird. All of this. – she gestured vaguely at the heavens. – Well… at least from here, I can see everyone.
Silence. A few low-ranking angels drifted past, bowing hastily before scurrying away. Violet’s lips twisted.
- If Mavka were here, she’d probably be thrilled we got a fancy throne, giving her villain speech. Wonder where she is now… Did she just poof?
She tilted her head back, staring into the abyss of the sky
- Perun would’ve hated me dirtying his chair. – a pause. She glanced down at her legs, glistening with sweat. – Yup. Definitely sweaty. Veles would’ve licked it off like a pervert. – a dry chuckle. – And I’d’ve let him.
Her gaze followed a passing seraphim.
- Maybe my kids got reborn as angels. They deserved that much.
She closed her eyes, just for a moment, letting the memories flood in. Iris’ rare laughter. Lily’s rogue strand of hair. Veles’ smirk.
- Heh. Sorry, Blanche. Promised you I’d find happiness, not… this. – her fingers drummed on the throne. – But the kids are okay. Iris is probably happy right now. Lily’s alive. That’s… enough. – a beat. – I promised to find my happiness, not be alone. But in the end I’m all alone now.
Silence. No one would respond.
- Yes. All alone.
Chapter 25: A Crack in the World
Chapter Text
L.Chapter 25. Epilogue to Lily – A Crack in the World
Ten years after Violet's ascension. The skies of Prav', once serene and eternal, now cracked like glass, splitting apart in jagged fractures of light and void.
A soundless explosion ripped through reality. Violet’s eyes snapped open, her divine senses recoiling from the anomaly.
- Hmm? What is this?
The sky splintered, revealing a yawning abyss beyond, a tear between worlds, between realities. The air vibrated with wrongness, a pressure that made even the angels falter. Violet stood, her white hair whipping in a sudden, unnatural wind.
- I might have an idea... – her voice was calm. – Heh. The world in danger? As if a god cares.
She raised her hands, divine energy coalescing between her palms. With a grunt, she pushed, trying to force the rift closed. The energy stroke the fracture and dissipated, useless. Violet sighed, lowering her arms.
- Guess I’ll try another thing.
This time, she spread her fingers wide. A dome of white light erupted from her body, expanding faster than thought, engulfing the throne, the spires, the planet itself and it kept going. Farther. Faster. The dome stretched beyond the atmosphere, beyond the stars, a shield against the unraveling cosmos. Until—
A blast. A flash so bright it blinded even the divine. Then. Silence. Nothingness.
The dust settled. The sky was whole again. But on the ground, lied a figure, small, fragile, mortal.
Her hair was violet, her godly radiance gone. Her chest rose and fell weakly, her face pale from overexertion. She slept. How long? Only time would tell.
Chapter 26: The Proposal
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 26. Prologue – The Proposal
The wind howled through the stone arches of Castle Blaiddyd, carrying with it the scent of pine and the distant murmur of the city below. Iris stood in the throne room. The weight of the past two years, two months for Fódlan, hung heavy on her shoulders, but her posture remained rigid, unbroken. Lambert rose from his throne, his smile warm but edged with concern.
- Ah, Iris. Good to see you in good health. It’s been... two months since you left.
- Two months for you. – Iris said flatly. – Two years for me. Don’t ask. Time flies differently in Mother’s world.
Lambert chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck.
- Haha, and you still haven’t exchanged your stoicism for something less threatening.
- If you’ll continue, I’ll leave.
- Alright, alright. – he held up his hands in surrender, though his grin didn’t fade. – Just joking. Please, take a seat.
- No, thanks. – she crossed her arms. – I’m not here for long. – a pause. Then, her voice softened, just slightly. – Your proposal. I agree to marry you.
- Iris, I—
- But. – she held up a finger. – Only in a year, okay? I love you, Lambert, but... – her jaw tightened. – I need time. To reflect. On Mother’s departure. Zmey’s death. Everything.
- Of course. – Lambert’s expression sobered. – I understand. When my father died, I... hesitated too. The grief faded. Almost. – he stepped closer, his voice dropping to a murmur. – I’ll be counting those 365 days.
- I see. – she shifted topics with her usual bluntness. – Father agreed for me to be a teacher. Said my knowledge would be ‘immense.’
- You? – Lambert barked a laugh. – A teacher? Goddess, you’ll be the strictest one Garreg Mach’s ever seen.
- And I’m sure the percentage of our marriage’s likelihood just dropped. Currently at 93.01%, down from 98.23%. So. Keep laughing.
- Cruel. – Lambert groaned, though his eyes sparkled.
- Chin up, Your Majesty. – she turned to leave, tossing a smirk over her shoulder. – Call me on a date, and it might rise again. Though, don’t get me defending you from bandits like last time.
Lambert’s laughter followed her as she strode toward the doors. But at the threshold, she paused.
-...In a year or so. – she said quietly. – We’ll meet again. As husband and wife. – a beat. – Huh. Still feels weird to say.
- Looking forward to that day.
- Me too.
Chapter 27: Family Dinner
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 27 – Family Dinner
The dining hall of Garreg Mach was quiet, save for the clinking of silverware and the occasional crackle of the hearth. Iris poked at her meal, her usual sharpness dulled by the monotony of the past two weeks. Across the table, Seteth watched her with patient eyes, while Flayn nibbled on her fish, her gaze flickering between them with poorly concealed amusement.
- So, Iris. How did your week go?
- It was fine. Except for the children. They’re... scared of me. – she scowled. – Maybe teaching was a bad idea.
- You’ll get there. They’ll adapt. We all know that behind those icy eyes of yours, you do care. They’ll see it eventually.
- I guess. – Iris leaned back in her chair, arms crossed. – But knowing something and teaching it are two different things. I underestimated that part. – she glanced at Seteth. – Maybe I’m better off with the Knights. Like Mother.
- I’m afraid you’d be kicking dust. Missions are scarce these days, bandits at worst, and even those are dwindling. Fódlan has become too peaceful.
Iris smirked.
- Looks like those brats actually listened to Mother and her threats. – she exhaled, a rare flicker of mischief in her eyes. – Maybe I should wreak some havoc. Shake things up a little.
- Hah! That would liven things up. Though, of course, we’re both joking.
-...Maybe. – Iris shrugged.
Flayn giggled into her napkin. Iris exhaled sharply, her smirk fading.
- Yeah. It’s boring here. No sword clashes, no castle sieges, no strong opponents. Just... life. – she made a face. – When Mother told me to find happiness, I expected more than this. Ugh. Almost makes me puke.
- You’ll adjust. – Seteth’s expression softened.
- I guess. – Iris took a sip of her drink, then casually added. – By the way, I’m marrying Lambert in a year. You’re coming?
Seteth choked on his tea.
- Sister! – Flayn gasped. – Are you serious?
- Yeah. Why not? I don’t see a problem.
Seteth wiped his mouth, recovering.
- There are, in fact, several problems with it.
- Listen. I’m not marrying a king. I’m marrying Lambert. I don’t care if he’s a king or a garbage collector, he’s still him. And I’m not playing the role of some demure queen. That’s not me.
- Be that as it may, others will talk. – Seteth frowned.
- Who cares? – Iris shot back. – I don’t. Lambert doesn’t. That’s all that matters.
- I see. Regardless, I’ll need to speak with him.
- I’ll tell him on our next date that my father wants to give him a written exam on how he’s worthy of me. – Iris smirked.
- That will only push him away.
- Isn’t that what you want? – Iris’s smirk widened.
- Hah. – Seteth chuckled despite himself. – A fair point.
A pause. Then, Iris’s expression softened, just slightly.
- Still... A life with someone you love. Kids playing in the halls. – she looked away. – She’d love to see that.
- Still thinking of Violet?
- Her happiness is mine. – Iris shook her head. – She always knew what was best for me.
- In that case, I look forward to it. But. – he pointed a finger. – I am speaking with Lambert.
- Heh. Of course, Father.
Chapter 28: Two Months Before Wedding
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 28 – Two Months Before Wedding
The grand doors of Castle Blaiddyd swung open with a familiar creak, and Iris strode in, her boots clicking against the polished marble. Lambert looked up from his paperwork, his face lighting up as she approached. Without a word, she grabbed him by the collar and pulled him into a kiss, firm, possessive, and over just as quickly as it began.
- Not changing your mind? – Lambert blinked, dazed.
- Are you stupid or what? Your chances are at 99.87%, cowboy.
- Still not 100%?
- 100% will be when you grant me a ring. – she said dryly.
A beat of silence. His smile faltered. Iris's eyes narrowed.
- Don’t... tell me...
- I—I forgot. I was so excited for today, I—
- 31%. – Iris announced.
- What?!
- 28%. – she hummed, tapping her chin. – You better hurry~.
- Wait here! – Lambert scrambled to his feet. – I’ll ride to the jewelers right now, get you the most beautiful ring in Fódlan—
Iris caught his wrist before he could bolt.
- Relax. – she yanked him closer, her grip unyielding. Lambert swallowed hard as she loomed over him, her smirk sharp enough to cut glass. – Listen, Lambert. After we’re married, I want kids. Yours. Will you grant me that?
- Oh, Iris... – Lambert’s breath hitched. – I’ve dreamed of it.
- Good. – her smirk softened, just a fraction. – Our interests align. – then, her voice dropped to a challenge. – Well then, want to bump it back to 100%? Grant me a kiss I won’t forget.
Lambert didn’t hesitate. He cupped her face and kissed her, slow, deep, pouring every ounce of devotion into it. When they finally broke apart, Iris’s cheeks were faintly pink. She cleared her throat.
-...Forgettable. Rate dropped by 3%.
- Hey!
Iris turned on her heel, tossing a smirk over her shoulder.
- Then you’d better improve by next time.
Chapter 29: The Morning After
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 29 – The Morning After
Two months later
The first light of dawn spilled through the curtains, painting the royal bedchamber in soft gold. Iris lay sprawled across the sheets, her hair a wild tangle against the pillows. Lambert stirred beside her, his bare chest rising and falling with the slow, satisfied rhythm of a man who’d been thoroughly claimed.
Iris propped herself up on one elbow, her smirk lazy but sharp.
- Well. That was a fine night. Yesterday, I mean.
- Yes, you’re... rough.
She chuckled, low and throaty.
- Maybe I inherited it from my mother.
Lambert opened his mouth. Iris pressed a finger to his lips.
- Shh. – her voice dropped to a purr. – In this bed, you don’t speak of any woman but me. – She leaned in, her breath hot against his ear. – Not even my mother.
With a fluid motion, she swung a leg over him, straddling his hips. The sheets pooled around her waist, leaving no doubt about last night’s... enthusiasms. Lambert flushed crimson, as if he hadn’t spent hours memorizing every inch of her. Iris tilted her head, feigning innocence.
- So. Which do you want? A boy? Or a girl?
Lambert swallowed hard.
- E-Either works. But a boy might be... preferable. For the throne.
- Tsk-tsk-tsk. – her nails dragged lightly down his chest, making him shiver. – No royal nonsense. I didn’t marry a king. – she bent lower, her lips grazing his ear before nipping sharply. – I married you. And if it’s a boy? – a whisper. – He’ll be our son first.
Lambert gasped, his hips jerking beneath her.
- Iris—
She pulled back with a laugh.
- Nuh-uh. Save it for tonight. – her hand splayed possessively over his abdomen. – We’ll repeat the process. Again and again. Until I’m certain. – her smirk turned wicked. – And after? Well... that depends on how well you behave, boy.
- Iris, are you—? You’ve been different these past six months. More... yourself.
- Stupid Lambert. – her voice softened, just for him. – It’s because I love you. You gave me time to rest. – her fingers traced idle circles over his heart. – Now witness what you’ve unleashed.
- What—? – Lambert blinked.
- Three. – she declared.
- Wh—?
- At least three children. – her eyes gleamed. – Got it?
- Oh, I’d love to. – Lambert’s dazed expression melted into a grin.
Iris didn’t let him finish. She crashed her lips onto his, swallowing his laughter, and his promise, whole.
Chapter 30: One Month in Pregnancy
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 30 – One Month in Pregnancy
The heavy oak door swung open with more force than necessary as Iris strode into the royal study.
- Remember, we need to—! – her words cut off abruptly as she took in Lambert's pallor. – What's wrong?
- Ah, it's nothing. – Lambert waved a dismissive hand, the motion slightly unsteady. – Just a bit dizzy. – he forced a smile that didn't reach his eyes. – More importantly, how are you feeling? You were sick yesterday.
Iris's fingers drifted unconsciously to her still-flat stomach.
- That's a good thing, right? – a rare, soft smile touched her lips. – It's here. Our baby.
- And I still can't believe you told the archbishop before your own husband.
In one fluid motion, Iris settled onto his lap, her arms looping behind his neck.
- That's because you're a slowpoke. – she teased, her breath warm against his ear. – Father was with me during the test. You were buried in your stupid paperwork.
- I'm sorry... – Lambert's voice carried genuine regret.
- Hah! – Iris laughed, the sound rich and full. – Don't worry. – she nipped playfully at his jaw. – I know king work never sleeps. – her smirk turned wicked. - Speaking of not sleeping... I know we just conceived, but how about we—
- Not today, Iris. – Lambert's interruption came too quickly. – I'm not feeling well.
Iris pulled back to study his face, her amusement fading.
- Geez, you look worse than I did yesterday. Sure you're not the pregnant one?
- Probably just overworked. I promise I'll make it up to you this weekend.
- It is the weekend. – Iris arched an eyebrow.
- Ah! Really? – Lambert's confusion seemed genuine, and something cold coiled in Iris's stomach.
Her next words carried an edge beneath their playful tone.
- Next time I'm bringing chains to lock you in our room. No work, just me.
- Haha, you'd better.
Iris frowned, her warrior's instincts screaming that something was wrong. But she exhaled sharply, pushing the concern aside for now.
- Anyway. – she said, rising from his lap. – Next weekend you're taking me to that café you promised. You forgot yesterday. – she punctuated the accusation with a sharp poke to his chest. – Stop overworking.
- I'll do better! – Lambert protested.
- You'd better. – Iris leaned down to press a kiss to his cheek, lingering just a moment too long to inhale his scent, something faintly off beneath his usual bergamot and parchment smell. – Rest today. I'm going for a walk. Need air. – she turned toward the door, throwing one last glance over her shoulder. – See you tonight.
As the door closed behind her, Iris's hand instinctively went to her belly again, her earlier joy now tempered with unease. The strongest warrior in Fódlan couldn't shake the feeling that something was very wrong with her king.

I.Chapter 31 – Two Months in Pregnancy
The afternoon sun streamed through the stained-glass windows of Garreg Mach’s old quarters, painting the room in hues of gold and crimson. Iris ran her fingers along the familiar wooden desk before sinking into a chair with a quiet sigh.
- Feels like home... – she murmured.
Seteth glanced up from his paperwork, a small smile tugging at his lips.
- Indeed it does.
Iris propped her chin on her hand, studying him with a sudden, mischievous glint in her eye.
- Say, Father... did you ever find another woman after Mother left?
Seteth’s quill paused mid-stroke. He raised an eyebrow.
- Since when did you inherit that smirk from your mother? Last I checked, you were all stone and steel.
- Ha. – Iris chuckled. – Noticed? – she absently touched her stomach. – Guess marriage changed me a little. Maybe Mother was right about... well, everything. – her smirk returned. – Now, answer the question.
- Not only is that rude, but it’s disrespectful to your mother.
- C’mon. Just a question.
A beat. Then Seteth huffed a laugh.
- Heh. You really are her daughter. – he set down his quill. – The answer is no.
- Would’ve been fine either way. – Iris shrugged.
Seteth studied her.
- You’re alright? You seem... distant.
Iris exhaled, her fingers drumming restlessly against the desk.
- Hmm. I don’t know. Everything feels... off. Not all of it, but. – she hesitated, then dropped her voice. – Lambert. He’s lost his drive. Doesn’t want to... do that with me anymore. It’s strange.
- Do you suspect infidelity?
- Hell no. – a forced smirk. – He wouldn’t dare. It’s something else. Like he’s sick, but... not. – she shook her head. – It’s just... weird.
- Then let’s have him examined by the clerics. They’ll find the cause.
-...We can try.
- You don’t sound convinced.
- Maybe I’m overthinking. First-time pregnancy and all that.
A pause. Then Seteth stood, his tone deliberately lighter.
- Perhaps tea is in order?
- Now that I won’t refuse. – she pushed herself up with a grunt. – Thanks, Father.

I.Chapter 32 – Three Months in Pregnancy
The afternoon light slanted through the castle windows, casting long shadows across the war room where Iris stood with Felix. Her hand rested absently on the gentle curve of her stomach, now unmistakable, as she stared at the untouched reports Lambert had abandoned that morning. Felix exhaled sharply, crossing his arms.
- He acts weirdly, doesn’t he?
Iris didn’t answer at first. Then, quietly:
- Yes.
- Both Faerghus and the Church’s clerics found nothing wrong. But his eyes. – he cut himself off, frustration tightening his jaw.
- At night, he barely sleeps. And he’s stopped eating. Even when I force him.
- Force him? Hah. He’s not a child.
- Not funny, Uncle Felix. – her voice was steel. – He eats once a day, if that. Sometimes, it’s just tea.
- In council meetings, he’s distracted. Like his mind’s somewhere else. – he rubbed his temple. – What the hell is happening to him?
Iris exhaled slowly.
- When did you first notice?
- Early this year. About a month and a half after your wedding.
- Same. Though... – her voice dropped. – I think I knew sooner. The first month of my pregnancy, something felt... off.
Felix studied her for a long moment. Then, decisive:
- Here’s what we do. We lock the king in your chambers. Make him rest. I’ll take over his duties again. – his mouth quirked, though there was no humor in it. – Seems the only thing left to try.
Iris’s gaze drifted to the portrait of Dimitri hanging on the wall, young, vibrant, alive. A cold thought slithered through her.
- Dimitri was ill with something.
- Don’t. He was much older when that started.
- Fine. Then I’ll take care of him. You handle the kingdom. – she met Felix’s eyes. – Thank you, Uncle.
- Don’t mention it.

I.Chapter 33 – Four Months in Pregnancy
The firelight danced across the royal bedchamber as Iris lay curled against Lambert's chest, her now-prominent belly pressed gently against his side. The rhythmic rise and fall of his breathing had finally steadied after months of restless nights. Lambert stretched with a contented yawn.
- I feel... relaxed today. – he murmured, the words heavy with rare peace.
Iris pushed up suddenly, bracing herself on his chest as she loomed over him. The smirk playing on her lips didn't quite reach her eyes.
- That's because I've been taking care of you. – she teased, poking his sternum. – Finally eating properly. Finally sleeping. – her voice dropped to a purr. – Though I wonder... are you truly fit to be king? Maybe we should escape to some quiet village instead.
Lambert's laugh was weak but genuine.
- You know I can't...
- I know. – Iris sighed, the smirk returning. – That's why I tease.
Without warning, Lambert's hand shot up to grasp her wrist. His eyes burned with sudden intensity.
- Iris... let's do it. It's been months.
The air between them shifted. Iris pressed two fingers to his lips, her expression turning uncharacteristically solemn.
- Let it be so. – she whispered. – Endure... just a few more months.
- You scare me. – he admitted. – Before, you were the one suggesting it daily, but now...
- I have my reasons. – the smirk returned, though it looked forced this time. – So the king must practice patience, eh?
- Right...
Seeing his disappointment, Iris softened. She leaned down to brush her nose against his.
- Sorry for being vague. – she murmured. – Just a few more months... and then you can have whatever you want with this body.

Chapter Text
I.Chapter 34 – Five Months in Pregnancy
The monastery’s quiet halls felt too large. Iris stretched like a cat in the afternoon sun, her hand instinctively cradling the swell of her belly, now impossible to ignore. The baby had been restless all morning, as if sensing her unease.
- I do wonder how he’s doing. – she murmured, more to herself than to Seteth.
Seteth didn’t look up from his paperwork.
- That’s none of your concern right now. Your task is to carry this child to term. It’s what he wants too.
- Still... being apart from him like this. Are you sure he’ll be alright?
The quill in Seteth’s hand stilled.
- ...I don’t know.
A beat of silence. Then Iris exhaled sharply.
- The symptoms are back. All of them. That one good month was just... a reprieve. – her voice dropped, clinical yet fraying at the edges. – I thought, goddess, I was sure, it might’ve been tied to us being intimate. But I was clean then, and we haven’t... not in months. Yet it’s returned anyway. – she shook her head. – It doesn’t make sense.
- For now, let it go. – Seteth finally met her gaze. – He’s with the clerics. He’s safe.
Iris opened her mouth to argue then froze. A flutter, stronger than before, pulsed against her palm. Her breath caught.
- Father, it moved.
Seteth was at her side in an instant, his ear pressed to her stomach. A moment passed—then another tiny kick echoed against his skin. He pulled back, smiling.
- Congratu—
The words died in his throat. Tears, silent, fragile, streaked down Iris’s cheeks. Not the angry, frustrated kind she’d shed in battle, but something quieter. Something aching. Seteth didn’t hesitate. He pulled her into his arms, her face buried against his shoulder as her body trembled.

I.Chapter 35 – Six Months in Pregnancy
The monastery gardens were bathed in golden afternoon light when Shez and Byleth found Iris lounging beneath her favorite tree, one hand resting on the pronounced curve of her belly. Shez whistled loudly as they approached.
- Whoa! What happened to your stomach? – Shez grinned, nudging Byleth with an elbow. – Did you drink the entire monastery ale supply by yourself?
- Haha. – Iris didn’t even open her eyes. – Very funny, asshole.
- Sheesh. – Shez clutched their chest in mock offense. – Is that any way to talk to your elders? Show some respect!
Iris finally cracked one eye open, studying them with amusement.
- You two haven’t changed at all. You should be aging, but... – she gestured vaguely at their unchanged faces. – You don’t?
- Strangely. – Shez shrugged. – I know.
A small figure peeked out from behind Byleth’s legs, a girl with Shez’s vibrant purple hair and Byleth’s piercing, emotionless stare. Iris immediately lit up.
- Oh! And who’s this? – she beckoned her closer. – C’mere, tiny warrior.
- Glory. Our little menace. – they patted her head. – Purple hair like mine, dead-eyed stare like her dad. You’ll definitely get along.
Iris snorted as Glory tentatively approached, fascinated by Iris’s stomach.
- So, Mrs. King’s Wife. – Shez continued, plopping down beside her. – How’s the whole ‘growing a human’ thing treating you?
- Smoothly, for now. Kid’s healthy. – her smile faded slightly. – Can’t say the same for its father, though. He’ll manage, but... his symptoms worsened. Now he’s coughing, too. – she shook her head. – An illness nobody can name. How’s that for irony?
- You think he caught... y’know. That?
- Nah. I’m clean.
- Kinda depressing. Let’s change the subject. – they leaned in conspiratorially. – So. Tell us about your adventures with Violet. Any good stories?
- Eh, a few. – Iris smirked. – There was this one world where you were a king clown, red nose, the whole bit. That was interesting.
- No way. – Shez gasped.
- Of course not. – Iris burst out laughing. – But let me tell you about the cities of the future...

The forest was silent. Too silent. Iris stumbled forward, her bare feet sinking into damp moss. The air smelled of ozone and something metallic, like lightning about to strike. She didn’t question why she was here. Didn’t even notice the absence of weight at her stomach.
- Where... am I? – her voice echoed unnaturally.
Then she saw it, a silhouette between the trees. Purple hair catching what little light filtered through the canopy. Her breath hitched. Mother?
- Mother? – she called, stepping closer. – What are you doing here?
No answer. The figure stood perfectly still, back turned. Iris reached out.
- Mom, I was so worr—
The figure whirled. Iris’s own face stared back, but wrong. The smile stretched too wide, teeth too sharp, eyes burning with manic glee. Iris recoiled.
- What are you—?
The thing that wore her face laughed, a sound like shattering glass, and as it laughed, its hair bled from violet to gold. Then the world erupted in golden fire, swallowing Iris whole.
She woke with a gasp, bolting upright so fast her vision swam. The sheets were drenched. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The door flew open. Seteth stood there, eyes wide with alarm.
- Iris! I heard you screaming—
She didn’t realize she was shaking until his arms wrapped around her.
- Just a nightmare. – she muttered into his shoulder, willing her pulse to slow.
Seteth pulled back, hands firm on her shoulders.
- I told you not to dwell on worries. You’re hurting yourself and the baby.
- I’m not worried! – Iris snapped, then forced a breath. – I have priorities. First the baby, then him. You know I can keep my head when it matters.
-...Sorry. What was the dream about?
- I was in a forest. – Iris stared at her hands. – Saw a figure... thought it was Mother. But when it turned... – her throat tightened. – It had my face. Smiling like a monster. Then its hair turned gold, and. – she gestured vaguely. – Fire. Everywhere.
Seteth exhaled slowly.
- It’s over now. But please, stop fixating on Faerghus. It isn’t helping.
- I’m fine. – Iris insisted, though her fingers strayed to her stomach, as if to reassure herself it was still there. – Even if he’s bedridden now, I’m not thinking about it. Not unless someone makes me.
Seteth brushed a damp strand of hair from her face.
- You’re safe. – he whispered. - Try to sleep.
-...I will. Thanks, Father.
As the door clicked shut, she stared at the ceiling, the afterimage of golden flames still seared behind her eyelids.
Chapter 37: Eight Months in Pregnancy. Birth
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 37 – Eight Months in Pregnancy. Birth
The medical room was too bright. Too cold. Iris’s screams had long since torn her throat raw, her nails leaving crescent moons in her palms. The pain was unbearable, waves of it, crashing over her again and again, but she pushed. She pushed.
And then. Relief. Sudden, dizzying. The weight was gone. Gasping, she collapsed back onto the sweat-soaked sheets, her vision swimming. For one blissful moment, there was only the sound of her own ragged breathing. Then. Silence. Not the cry of a newborn. Not the relieved murmurs of clerics. Just. Silence.
She forced herself up onto her elbows, her body trembling.
- Give her to me. – she rasped, reaching out blindly. – Give me my—
The cleric’s face said everything.
- The baby was born dead. – they whispered. – I’m... so sorry.
The world shattered. Someone was screaming. Maybe her. Maybe the walls. The clerics’ mouths moved, comfort or apologies, she couldn’t hear them. Couldn’t hear anything but the wrongness of it. Her arms were empty. Her child was… No.
Later, she didn’t remember how she got to Lambert’s bedside. Only that she was there, staring at his sunken face, his too-thin frame. He looked half-dead already.
- Lambert... – her voice was a broken thing. – I’m sorry. The baby is… – the word clawed its way out. – Dead.
Tears fell. She didn’t bother wiping them away.
- It was a girl. – she whispered. – Our girl. She’s... gone.
Her breath hitched. A sob wrenched itself free, then another. She wailed, the sound guttural, animal. But Lambert didn’t stir. Didn’t react. Iris’s head snapped up.
- Why aren’t you saying anything?!
The words echoed in the hollow room. Then she saw him. Really saw him. The shallow rise and fall of his chest. The waxy pallor of his skin. The way his fingers twitched, as if even that took effort. Her anger drained away, leaving only a yawning, endless grief.
-...I’m sorry. – she choked out.
And then she crumpled over his body, over the ghost of their daughter, over the pieces of a life that would never be.
Chapter 38: Two Graves of Lost Hopes
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 38 – Two Graves of Lost Hopes
The cemetery was quiet. Too quiet. Iris sat between two fresh mounds of earth, her arms wrapped around her knees, her back hunched like a broken thing. The first grave bore Lambert’s name, the letters still sharp in the stone. The second was smaller, unnamed, just "Beloved Daughter" carved with clumsy, grieving hands.
Rain fell in a slow, mournful drizzle, soaking through her clothes, her hair, the already-sodden ground. She didn’t feel it. Didn’t feel anything. Footsteps approached. Stopped. Felix’s hand settled on her shoulder, hesitant.
-...You shouldn’t blame yourself. – he said, voice rough. – It wasn’t your fault.
Iris didn’t react. The words slid off her like the rain. Felix exhaled.
- It was just... circumstances. We never even figured out what sickness took him. And the baby. – his voice cracked. – She was healthy. Right until...
A pause. The rain filled the silence. Iris spoke, her voice flat, hollow.
- Leave.
Felix’s hand tightened, just for a second, then fell away. He opened his mouth, closed it, and turned on his heel. His footsteps faded into the downpour. And Iris was alone. The rain turned to sleet. The sleet to snow. Days blurred. She didn’t move. Didn’t eat. Didn’t sleep.
At some point, the snow melted. The sun rose, pale and weak, over a world that had no right to keep turning. Only then, her muscles stiff, her bones aching, did Iris stand. She didn’t look back.
Chapter 39: Golden Awakening
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 39 – Golden Awakening
Two weeks had passed. Iris remained locked in her room, unseen. Seteth sat with Flayn in the adjacent chamber, the weight of helplessness pressing down on them.
- Do you think she'll be okay, Father? – Flayn's voice was small.
- I don't know. If Violet were here... she'd know how to help her. – his voice broke. – I've failed her.
- Don't blame yourself. – Flayn took his hand.
A heavy silence. Then the door burst open. A guard staggered in, armor dented.
- Archbishop! We're under attack!
- By whom?
- Creatures! Not of this world!
Seteth shot to his feet.
- Mobilize the knights! Evacuate the students! Alert Rhea!
As the guard rushed out, a creak echoed through the room. Iris's door swung open. She emerged, eyes hollow, head tilted unnaturally, arms limp at her sides. She moved like a specter toward the exit. Seteth reached for her.
- Iris, where—
Her hand lashed out, striking his away without acknowledgment.
- Flayn, stay with her! – Seteth commanded, rushing out.
Chaos engulfed the monastery grounds. From another world, the invaders came. Zmey Gorynych circled above, three heads casting monstrous shadows. Vrykolaks lumbered forward, single eyes gleaming with malice. Baechniks scuttled between them, human faces stretched in silent screams.
At the rear stood their commanders. A silver-bearded Chernobog, 3 meters tall, his dark, depthless eyes surveying the carnage, massive sword planted in the earth. Koschei the Deathless at his side, a skeletal wraith with flesh clinging too tightly to bone.
The battlefield fell unnaturally silent as Iris stood at its center. Her expression shifted, first a twisted smile, then sudden, shuddering sobs.
- Oh. – she whispered, voice cracking. – I understand now.
Her head snapped up. A scream tore from her throat, not human, not mortal, and with it erupted a blast of golden light. Her eyes burned with the same radiance, the ends of her hair bleeding into molten gold.
- Zmey, you bastard... because of you—
Rage consumed her. She moved faster than sight, faster than thought. The first vrykolak died before it could blink, cleaved diagonally from shoulder to hip. A baechnik leapt, its human face still screaming as its body split midair. Every slash was brutal, excessive—not just killing, but erasing.
Zmey Gorynych dove, all three heads roaring. Iris pivoted. One vertical arc of her blade. The dragon's massive form split cleanly down the middle, its halves collapsing in a geyser of black blood.
Koschei the Deathless raised skeletal hands, too late. Iris's palm, wreathed in golden fire, slammed into his ribcage. The immortal burned, his death rattle cut short as his body crumbled to ash. Then Chernobog.
Three meters tall, silver-bearded, eyes darker than the void between stars. The same semi-god who had once tried to kill Violet. Iris stared at him, voice eerily calm.
- What are you doing here? My mother killed you.
- Perhaps in another world. We came to end her before she became a threat. Though... I don't see her.
- You're years too late. – Iris said. – She's gone.
- In that case—
His sentence ended abruptly. Iris was already behind him. Chernobog's body slid apart in two perfect halves. The dust settled. Silence.
The golden light faded from Iris’s hair, her aura dissipating like smoke. She didn’t turn to face the others, couldn’t bear to. Seteth’s voice was hushed with realization.
- That form… it’s just like—
- It seems so. – Iris cut in, her back still turned.
- But how? – Seteth stepped closer. – You never had Violet’s powers before.
A heavy exhale. Then, finally, Iris turned to him.
- Father. – she said, her voice hollow. – I killed Lambert. And our child.
Silence. Deafening. Iris continued, her words measured, as if reciting a death sentence.
- There’s a rule. Demons, and those who carry their power, can’t form intimate bonds with humans. If they do… the human dies. And any child along with them. – her fingers flexed, golden embers flickering at her fingertips. – Before he vanished, Zmey left his power inside me. Waiting. And because of that… – her voice cracked. – I’m sorry.
- It’s not your fault. – Seteth reached for her.
- It is. – she pulled away. – I have to go.
- Where?
- Somewhere. I don’t know yet.
With a sudden motion, she slashed the air, her blade tearing open a rift, a portal swirling with the same gold that had just consumed her. She paused at the threshold, glancing over her shoulder one last time.
- Farewell, Father.
And then she was gone.
Chapter 40: Ruthless Judgement
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 40 – Ruthless Judgement
The portal spat Iris out into a ruined world. Before her stretched the familiar devastation, crumbling villages, lurking monsters, and in the distance, the obsidian Tower looming over it all. Yav', just as her mother had described it.
- Hmph. Not what I needed. – she muttered, and without hesitation, slashed open another rift.
The throne room of Prav' was nothing like she expected, no grandeur, just a sealed, suffocating chamber. At its center sat Perun, his storm-gray eyes widening as she materialized before him.
- You must be Perun. – Iris stated, her voice flat.
- And you are—?
- Close your portals. Now.
- I'm afraid I can't just—
Steel flashed. Iris's blade buried itself in his gut before he could finish.
- Do as I say. – she hissed, twisting the sword. – Or this gets worse.
Perun choked, blood bubbling at his lips.
- J-Just... destroy the barrier around the Tower...
- Fine. – Iris yanked her sword free. – But if I catch you again, I won’t stop at a warning.
She returned to Yav' in a single step, her boots crunching on scorched earth as she marched toward the Tower. No hesitation. No grand speech.
She raised a hand, golden fire erupted from her palm, engulfing the structure in an inferno. The flames burned unnaturally, hotter than any earthly fire, until the Tower collapsed into a smoldering heap of ash. Somewhere in the wreckage, Mavka, Violet’s old companion, might have still lingered. Iris didn’t care.
This world, any world, that dared repeat the cycle of suffering would burn. With a final, dismissive slash, she opened another portal and vanished.
World after world, the same pattern repeated. No grand speeches. No mercy. Just golden fire and the swift, brutal arc of her blade. Foes, potential allies, it didn’t matter. If they threatened the balance, they burned.
She moved with mechanical precision, cutting through realities like pages in a book. Some worlds held familiar faces, alternate versions of people she once knew. They stared at her with confusion, fear, sometimes recognition. But she didn’t hesitate. Her sword gleamed, splitting the air with portals, each slash opening a path to another doomed target. She wasn’t cleansing worlds, just excising the rot.
- I’ve had enough of this chaos.
Then. A voice. It was Kronos.
- What are you doing?
- What Mother did. – Iris didn’t pause. – What else?
- I understand your grief. But your movements are reckless. You could unravel fate itself.
- I know what I’m doing. – she snapped, golden flames licking at her fingertips. – I’m eliminating threats.
A sigh, heavy with time itself.
- Losing Lambert and your child… that pain—
- I killed them. – she hissed, her voice cracking. – I will never forgive myself for that.
- It wasn’t your fault.
- Doesn’t matter. The fact remains. – her grip tightened on her sword. – I can’t live a human life anymore. This blade is all I have left.
A pause. Then.
- Then let me send you somewhere else. To save those you love.
- Don’t pity me. They won’t be my Lambert. Not my child.
- Not them. Someone else you care for.
A portal tore open before her, not by her hand, but by his will.
- Please. Step through.
For the first time in countless battles, Iris hesitated. How dare he command me? But still. She stepped inside. And vanished.
Chapter 41: I.Chapter 41 - Reunion Across the Worlds+I.Chapter 41x – Mia
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 41 – Reunion Across the Worlds
The tower stretched endlessly above her, its vast chamber humming with the clash of steel. Iris barely registered the battle, her gaze locked onto the figures behind the shimmering barrier. Ike. The Black Knight. Just as Violet had described. Her fingers twitched toward her sword. Then.
- Heya, pretty!
A voice like sunlight. Iris froze. Her pulse stuttered. Slowly, so slowly, she turned. There, grinning, hands on her hips, violet hair tousled from battle, stood her.
- Hi, I'm Mia! – the woman beamed, as bright and reckless as the stories. – Part-time mercenary, full-time badass. You wouldn't be the enemy, right?
Iris couldn’t breathe. Tears spilled over before she could stop them.
- Heh, what's with the clothes? – Mia tilted her head. – You came to a battlefield, not a family dinner. – she winked. – Oh, and I love your hair! Purple’s definitely the best color!
Iris glanced down at herself, still in the soft linen tunic she’d worn in Fódlan, the one Lambert had once teased her for favoring. It felt like a lifetime ago. She took a step forward. Then another. Each one heavier than the last.
- Are you feeling alright? You’re all weepy.
Iris didn’t answer. She lunged forward, crushing Mia in a embrace so tight it lifted her off her feet.
- Ghh! Now I know you’re the enemy, trying to suffocate me! – Mia wheezed, flailing.
- Mother. – Iris choked out, burying her face in Mia’s shoulder. – Mother. Mother. Oh, how I missed you—
- You’ve got the wrong person, girl.
Iris pulled back just enough to meet her eyes and smiled through the tears.
- No. Not in this world.
- You talk real vague, you know that? – she patted Iris’s cheek. – But I like your style! Those eyes? Gorgeous. – then, abruptly, she pointed over Iris’s shoulder. – Uh, tiny problem, we’re kinda in the middle of something?
She wiped her face with her sleeve and nodded.
- Right. We’ll talk after.
Her sword flashed gold as she turned, not toward the enemy, but to stand beside Mia. For the first time in months, something in her chest ached less.
I.Chapter 41x – Mia
The battle's echoes still hummed in the air as they sat slumped against a wall. Mia wiped her brow with a dramatic sigh.
- Phew! Now that was a fight! – she nudged Iris with an elbow. – Though you barely broke a sweat. Not fair!
Iris let out a quiet huff, almost a laugh.
- We're on different levels... Mother.
- Ugh, stop that! – Mia groaned, cheeks flushing. – You're making me blush! – she stretched her arms behind her head. – So... tell me about this Mia of yours.
And so Iris did. She spoke in clipped, careful sentences, Violet finding her after the war, teaching her to hold a sword, the way she'd shield young Iris. Most of all, she spoke of following Violet to her world, even when left behind. Mia listened, her grin softening.
- Huh. Your mom sounds awesome. Wait, that's really me? Oh man, I am cool!
- You are... Mia. – the name felt foreign on her tongue. – But... your true name is Violet, right?
- Violet? – Mia blinked. – Nope! Born Mia, named Mia! – she winked. – Though Violet is a killer name. If I ever change it, that's the one!
A ghost of a smile touched Iris's lips.
- It would suit you. – she hesitated. – Your parents... do you argue with them?
- Ugh. They say 'women shouldn't fight.' Like, excuse you? Look at Titania, total battlefield queen!
- Heh. Indeed. – then, quieter. – But... after the war? Visit them.
- Don't wanna. – Mia crossed her arms.
- When my mother finally went home... it had been fifteen years. They reunited. She forgave them. – a pause. – They were murdered not long after.
- Iris...
- All I'm saying is... they might regret it. They might be looking for you right now. – Iris met her eyes. – Please. Just see them.
-...I'll try.
- Thank you.
Mia hopped up, offering a hand.
- Alright, enough moping! Break's over, partner.
- Yes. – Iris took it. – Let's go.
Chapter 42: Golden Protector
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 42 – Golden Protector
The battlefield roared with the fury of dragons, their wings churning the air into a storm of embers and smoke. Mia danced through the chaos, her blade flashing with playful precision. Each strike was punctuated by a smirk, a taunt "Too slow!" as she weaved between snapping jaws and searing breath.
Iris moved differently. Where Mia was lightning, Iris was the falling axe, every motion calculated, every swing ending a life without flourish. She carved through the Goldoan ranks with chilling efficiency, her expression unreadable.
Then. Mia lunged at a crimson-scaled drake, her sword finding its mark with a crunch of splitting bone.
- Hah! Critical hit!
The dragon howled, its tail whipping around. Mia's foot slipped. FWOOOM! A blast of fire engulfed her. She staggered back, her shoulder singed, but her grin never wavered.
- Tch. Not bad! But it'll take more than—
Another dragon inhaled, its chest glowing molten orange. Iris's head snapped up.
- No!
A wall of golden fire erupted between them, swallowing the dragon's breath whole. Iris stood in the inferno's wake, her eyes alive with something feral.
- You dared attack Mother. – she hissed. The ground beneath her cracked. – You didn't count me in.
Her aura exploded, the gold in her hair surging upward like liquid sunlight, stopping midway. Second Awakening. But unlike Violet's rage-fueled transformations, this burned brighter, purer. Love. Protection. The same force that had first ignited her power.
- You tried to kill her. – Iris whispered. – Unforgivable.
She moved. Not a teleport. Not a blur. Just speed, raw, undeniable. One dragon fell, cleaved diagonally. Another, bisected at the knees. A third, its head tumbling before its body realized it was dead. In seconds, the field was silent. Iris knelt beside Mia, her voice impossibly soft.
- Are you okay... Mother?
Mia's eyes widened, not at the carnage, but at Iris.
- Iris! Your hair! That looks wicked cool!
Iris blinked. Touched a strand. The gold shimmered, unfamiliar yet right.
- What... is this?
She never saw Violet do that. Then Mia grinned, bloody but bright, and Iris felt something in her chest unclench.
- Yes. – she murmured, smiling back. – Wicked cool.
A few hours later Ike and his army defeated Ashera. The Tower fell silent. The war was over.
Ashera's defeat should have been a triumph, but Iris barely registered the cheers, the gratitude, the questions about her power. Her eyes never left Mia, alive, unharmed, victorious. That was all that mattered.
When they finally stepped into the sunlight beyond the Tower, Iris remained at Mia's side, closer than a shadow. Mia stretched, rolling her shoulders with a grin.
- Well, that's that! So... – she bumped Iris's arm. – Wanna join our merry band? Be wicked cool to have you around.
- No. My job here is done. – her voice softened. – I didn't let them kill you. That's enough.
- Aw, that's a bummer. – Mia's smile faltered. – Was hoping we could stick together longer.
A chuckle escaped Iris, warm, but tinged with sorrow. She took Mia's hand, her grip firm yet gentle.
- Mia. – she murmured, the name still foreign on her tongue. – Find your happiness. Find someone... dear to you. – her thumb brushed Mia's knuckles. – That's what my mother wished for me. And now... I wish it for you. Even if you're not her.
Mia blinked, then laughed, bright and unburdened.
- Heh, I'll try! And you. Take care of yourself, alright?
- I will.
Iris hesitated. For a heartbeat, she held on tighter, then slowly, so slowly, let go. Her sword flashed, splitting the air with a golden seam.
- I'll... miss you, Mother. – she whispered.
And then she was gone.
Chapter 43: Other Me
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 43 – Other Me
The neon sign of "Game Haven" buzzed overhead, its bright colors clashing with the twilight sky. Iris stood frozen on the sidewalk, staring at the building that had once been their makeshift headquarters, where Violet had turned an abandoned office into their home
Two years. Only two years since they'd last argued over takeout in that cramped upstairs room, since Violet had ruffled her hair after a close call with a demon. It felt like yesterday. It felt like a lifetime. A small, pained smile tugged at her lips.
- How ironic. – she murmured. – She'd laugh herself sick knowing our home became a game store. Should've been a casino. That would've been poetic.
Khronos's voice hummed in her mind, gentle.
- She's in Yav' now. You could see her. She'd want that.
- No. – the word came out too sharp. She forced her fingers to relax. – How do I tell her I have the power she never wanted me to have? Or that Lambert and our child. – her breath hitched. – I can't face her like this.
A pause. Then.
- Then I leave you to your peace. Farewell, Iris.
Silence. Iris pushed open the glass door, the chime of the bell jarringly cheerful. Inside, the space was different, shelves of consoles and colorful game cases where their weapons racks had been, a neon-lit racing game where Violet's battered couch once sat. But the shape of it, the way the light fell through the windows, was the same.
- Can I help you find something? – the assistant's voice barely registered.
Iris didn't answer. She trailed her fingers along a shelf, half-expecting to feel the same. Here, Violet had taught her to throw knives at a dartboard. There, they'd sprawled on the floor eating pizza, arguing over "which Fantasy Finale villain had the best drip. "
A laugh bubbled up in Iris's throat, wet and fractured. She swallowed it. For a moment, just a moment, she let herself remember.
The game store’s fluorescent lights hummed overhead as Iris traced the edge of a display case, her reflection warped in the glass. Then.
- Hah. I see your powers finally awakened.
A voice like her own, but wrong, lilting where hers was flat, smug where hers was sharp. Iris turned. Herself stood in the doorway. Same violet hair. Same golden eyes. Same face. But the way she stood, hips cocked, fingers drumming a playful rhythm against her thigh, was nothing Iris would ever do.
- Who are you?
The other Iris grinned, too wide, too many teeth.
- C’mon, genius. You know. – she twirled a lock of hair around one finger. – I’m Iris. Just… prettier. Way stronger. Way more fun. – her grin sharpened. – Though that glare? Yeah, we share this one.
- Alternative universe. – Iris didn’t blink.
- Ding-ding! – the double spread her arms. – See, I felt something weird. Like… me, but not me, waking up power. And that’s a problem.
- We just met. – Iris said flatly. – Thinking I’m a threat now is stupid.
- Oh, but you will be. – the double’s golden aura erupted, but different. No flame in her eyes. No half-gold hair. Just pure, shimmering gold from root to tip. – Which is why I’m killing you today.
Iris barely had time to raise her blade before the other her moved. The world exploded in shattered glass and splintered drywall as they crashed through the store’s wall, landing in the alley beyond. Iris skidded on concrete, coughing up dust.
Her double stood over her, grinning down with a look Iris had never worn—sadistic, hungry.
- Interesting. – Iris muttered, pushing herself up. Gold flickered at her temples, her aura roaring to life in a cascade of fire. Her eyes ignited. – Now we fight as equals.
- I wouldn’t say equals.
Their blades collided in a storm of sparks—no teleportation, no tricks. Just raw, mirrored skill. Block. Counter. Block. Counter. The rhythm was almost mechanical, until. Crack! Other Iris's fist connected with her jaw, sending Iris rocketing skyward. Before she could recover, another blow hammered her downward, slamming her into the forest outside the city like a fallen star. The impact cratered the earth, trees splintering outward in a shockwave.
Iris coughed, blood spattering the dirt. Her violet-gold aura flickered weakly. Other Iris descended leisurely, boots crunching on broken branches.
- Good thing you're still weak. – she mused, twirling her sword. – Makes this easy.
- I never threatened you. – Iris forced herself up. – Why?
- Why? – Other Iris laughed. – Simple. I eliminate any threat to my mother. Even you.
Iris's grip tightened on her sword.
- Ohhh, want to know what your Violet's up to? – Other Iris crouched, grinning. – After she left for your Yav', she protected it. How pathetic. – a sneer. – Not like my mother.
Iris stayed silent, teeth grinding.
- Then she fucked Veles, King of Demons. – Other Iris's grin turned vicious. – Fourteen kids! Almost all dead now. Oops.
A muscle twitched in Iris's jaw.
- Not my fault, though! Neither me or Mother has anything to do with it. – Other Iris sang. – Little Liliac survived. Ugh, so soft. Makes me sick. – she leaned in. – And your mom? Misses you. Pathetic.
Iris's breath hitched.
- She's a god now. Weak compared to mine. – Other Iris stood, stretching. – After I kill you? She's next. Don't worry, I'll make it quick. She's kinda my mom too, after all—
The ground shattered. Iris's aura condensed, no longer flames, but a molten, liquid gold. Her violet hair bleached entirely gold, her irises hardening into flat, radiant discs. The air warped around her.
- YOU DARE THREATEN MY MOTHER?
Other Iris opened her mouth. Iris moved. A fist connected with her gut, launching her upward, through the atmosphere, past the stratosphere, into the void of space. Iris followed, a golden comet streaking through the black. They floated now, suspended in the starless dark. Other Iris grinned, spinning lazily.
- Hah! Finally your true form! Gold suits me better, though.
Iris stared, her voice dead calm.
- You threatened her. Now you die.
- Now we fight!
Chapter 44: A Crack in the World
Chapter Text
I.Chapter 44. Epilogue to Iris – A Crack in the World
Time lost meaning as they fought, days, weeks, maybe months. Their clashes sent shockwaves through the void between universes, though neither realized where they truly were.
- Why are you doing this? – Iris demanded, parrying a brutal strike. – What does your Violet even want?
Other Iris laughed, twisting away.
- Nothing special! Don’t hurt your big head over it!
- Resist all you want. – Iris growled. – I’ll end you.
- Hahaha! We’ll see!
Their blades collided again—this time with enough force to crack the fabric of space itself. A jagged split formed, pulsing with void energy.
- What is this?
- What have you done?
Ignoring her, Iris engaged back in the fight. The crack grew with each exchange, spreading like broken glass. Then. A white dome. Swelling from nowhere. For a split second, warmth. Then. BOOM. The universe seemed to have shattered.
