Chapter 1: Just You
Chapter Text
Rey was a twenty-three-year-old woman born in England to royalty. She was the only child of King Dathan and Queen Miramir. As the princess of England, she was taught from an early age how to speak and act like royalty. During her childhood, in her free time, she would pick roses and swim in the river near the castle. Swimming always made her feel freest, providing a healthy escape whenever the responsibilities of being a princess became overwhelming. She often stayed in the water until twilight, returning home soaked and leaving muddy footprints on the castle floors, despite the clear annoyance of others.
Rey ran down the hill barefoot toward the river, hoping neither her mother nor father would call out her name. She climbed up the big tree that was at the bottom of the hill.
She giggled as she jumped into the cool water, feeling relief from the summer heat. Coming up for air, she took a breath when she heard a male voice say, "Princess, is that you?" She turned to see a man at the bottom of the hill, his expression serious and intense.
"How would you know if I am the princess?" Rey asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I saw a painting of you," the stranger began to say. "There is no lady in all of England with such beauty."
She blushed deeply at that.
"Did I say something wrong?"
"No, you didn't."
"I would hope not as I respect your majesties."
"And you are?" Rey asked sarcastically, chuckling.
"Benjamin, Your Highness," he replied, lowering his head and bowing to her before he looked back at her.
She swam closer, wanting a good look at the man. She stared at him, keeping her eyes on him as she studied his face. He had long, wavy dark hair that fell to his shoulders, and a neatly trimmed mustache and goatee framing his mouth. His fair skin and strong, angular facial features, including a pronounced nose and sharp jawline, made him very attractive. He was wearing knight's armor, and his head seemed wet with sweat.
"Is something the matter, princess?" he asked.
"No, I was just... are you a knight?" she replied.
He chuckled, clearly amused by her question.
"Is something funny, sir?" she inquired.
"I did not realize a man could wear such armor if he were not a knight," he said with evident sarcasm.
"So, you are indeed a knight?" Rey asked, furrowing her eyebrows.
"Yes, Your Highness."
"You don't need to address me as such."
"But aren't you the princess?" he countered.
"Yes," she answered, sighing in defeat. Being called 'Your Highness' or 'princess' made her feel uncomfortable. She wished to be seen as an equal to everyone.
He watched as she slowly swam toward the shallow end at the bottom of the hill, her rich auburn-brown hair completely wet.
"Are you our newest knight?" she asked.
"Yes, I am."
"So, I will see you around the kingdom?"
"Yes, princess."
"I'm glad to hear this."
"I saw you coming here," he replied, changing the subject.
"Did my mother or father send you to fetch me?" Rey asked, rolling her eyes at the thought as she stood up and stepped out of the water.
"No, neither Miramir nor Dathan sent me." He laughed, clearly amused by her disgusted expression as he met her hazel eyes with his own.
"You're comfortable saying the names of royalty?" Rey raised an eyebrow, a small grin forming on her lips.
"Neither the king nor the queen is here; besides, I won't be beheaded," Ben said with a lazy shrug.
"If you addressed them as such, they would give you a disgusted glare." Rey laughed.
"And would you do such a thing, Your Majesty?" he teased.
"I wouldn't if you addressed me by my name."
He looked deeply into her hazel eyes, studying her. She had a fair complexion, smooth, clear skin, and a beautiful natural glow. Her now wet, rich auburn-brown hair was so long, it reached down to her legs.
"If my parents didn't send you then why are you here?"
"I grew curious at the sight of a young lady running with such joy."
"What is it that you are looking at?" Rey asked, furrowing her brows, which framed her large, expressive eyes. She parted her soft, naturally rosy lips.
"Just you," Ben murmured softly.
Chapter 2: Yes, Mother
Chapter Text
Rey changed into a striking gown, a late design made of silk taffeta with alternating vertical stripes of pale yellow and ivory. She stood in front of the mirror in her room, ensuring that she looked perfect. Miramir, her mother, was always quick to comment if there was anything amiss on Rey's face or if she made the slightest wrinkle in her dress.
She admired the fitted dress, which featured a low square neckline trimmed in delicate ivory ruffles and fringe. Small shoulder embellishments, including tassel-like fringes, softly highlighted the strong neckline. The waist was cinched, emphasizing the gown's dramatic silhouette.
Rey noticed how the skirt was highly structured, with a prominent bustle at the back. It had gathered drapery across her hips, accented with floral embellishments on the sides. The stripes were cleverly arranged in chevrons on the bodice front and upper skirt, drawing the eye upward and elongating her figure.
She focused on every detail of her dress. The hemline was adorned with multiple tiers of pleated ruffles made from coordinating striped silk and lace, adding both movement and richness. The train flowed elegantly behind her, completing the dramatic look.
"Rey!" Rey heard Miramir loudly shout, opening Rey's bedroom door, causing Rey to wince and turn to face her mother as maids entered the room to clean.
"Yes, Mother?" Rey replied, blinking.
"Where have you been all afternoon?"
"Near the castle... at the river, actually."
"That's what I assumed. Your father thought you were at the library, not that he notices your whereabouts very often." There was a hint of anger in her tone and Rey wasn't sure if that part was aimed at her or her father.
"I just wanted to swim and be alone."
"My goodness," Miramir huffed, walking towards Rey and shaking her head. "You are a young lady, not a child."
"Yes, Mother," Rey murmured, nodding her head.
"You are also a princess and shall one day be queen."
"I know, Mother; I haven't forgotten."
"Well, your actions suggest otherwise." Miramir's brown eyes widened in annoyance.
"I'm sorry, Mother," Rey whispered, looking down at the ground.
"You need to set an example for your people."
"Yes, Mother."
"Dinner is ready. You must make an appearance at once," Miramir said in a demanding tone, giving Rey a quick nod.
"Yes, Mother, of course," Rey replied, offering her mother a weak smile.
Chapter 3: Dinner
Chapter Text
Rey sat across from her parents at the dining room table, which was big enough for fifty or so people. An awkward silence filled the space as three maids brought warm soup to them. Rey had always wanted to sit next to her parents and share a deep conversation, but they were so distant that they each sat three chairs away from each other. It was enough to keep a distance without appearing too strange.
"Mother, how was your day?" Rey asked, her voice echoing in the room.
"Fine, thank you," Miramir replied.
"Perhaps, if it is all right, I can sit near you two?"
"Daughter, that word means are you able to?" Miramir responded, glaring at Rey.
Rey sat there, not saying a word.
"Are you able to?”
"Yes, mother, I can."
"I believe the proper word you're looking for is—"
“May I sit near you and Father?”
“There is no point,” Miramir sighed. “Bethany already placed your soup there.”
“Mother, I just—”
“Enough,” Dathan said sharply, glaring at Rey. “You have never asked about this before; why now?” His voice was loud and cold.
"I was just curious about trying something new," Rey answered, frowning as she looked down at her soup.
"We have always eaten like this."
"Yes, Father."
“There is no need to do things differently.”
"My apologies, Father. Please forgive me." Rey looked back up at him and took her soup spoon.
“No more of this nonsense.”
"I never meant to offend you, Father."
“Of course not.”
She swallowed and gave a quick nod.
Rey began to enjoy her bowl of Mulligatawny soup in silence, trying hard not to say another word. She thought about the knight she had met hours before and the long conversation they had shared by the river, discussing their interests, childhood hobbies, and how their families differed—her royal life versus his common upbringing.
"I heard about your new knight, Benjamin," Miramir said, and Rey fought the urge to look up and join the conversation. "Are the whispers I hear about him true? Is he truly a skilled knight?"
"Yes, he is a good swordsman," Dathan answered.
"How good a swordsman is he?"
"The best I have."
"Is he of noble blood?"
"No, he was born into a farming life."
"So, he's a commoner?" Miramir asked, clear disgust in her voice as Rey imagined her rolling her eyes. Rey continued to enjoy her soup.
"Sadly, yes; otherwise, I'd enjoy his company more," Dathan replied.
"What a pity. He looks like a gentleman." Miramir sighed softly. She sounded disappointed at that.
"Rey, remember to never associate with common folk," Dathan warned, the sternness evident in his tone.
"Yes, Father," Rey replied with a sigh of defeat, hiding the urge to roll her eyes as she stared down at her soup.
"What do I always say?"
"Common folk exist to serve us."
"It's a good thing my father and generations before taught us that," Dathan chuckled, making Rey want to gag up her food.
Rey didn’t share her parents’ beliefs. Whenever she left the castle, she made sure to treat every person, regardless of their status, with respect and dignity. She wanted to curse her father for his cruel words, but every time she thought she could, her lips fell silent. Eventually, she cursed herself for not expressing her true feelings to him.
Chapter 4: Night Sky
Chapter Text
After supper, Rey got ready for bed with the help of a maid named Elizabeth, who was close to her parents' age. Elizabeth had always taken excellent care of Rey, and she secretly regarded her as a mother figure. She had fed, bathed, clothed, and taught Rey how to read, while Dathan busied himself with running the kingdom, and Miramir often hid in her chambers, only acknowledging Rey when she needed something.
“Elizabeth, may I ask you a question?” Rey inquired as she sat on the edge of her bed, with Elizabeth brushing her hair gently beside her.
“You’ve already asked me one,” Elizabeth teased, prompting a giggle from both of them.
“Well, may I ask you another?”
“Yes, what is troubling you, sweet girl?”
“How do you know such a thing?” Rey asked.
“I have raised and loved you as my own,” Elizabeth replied. “I know you as well as the back of my hand. You are troubled.”
Unsure of what to say, Rey frowned and stayed silent.
“You can tell me anything you wish,” Elizabeth assured her, finishing the brushing as Rey turned to meet her warm green eyes.
“Why are my mother and father the way they are?” Rey asked, raising an eyebrow.
“What do you mean?”
“One-minded, cruel towards others.”
“Perhaps it’s a result of being royalty.” Elizabeth tilted her head, and her curly dirty blond hair fell over her left shoulder.
“But by my status, I’m a princess, royal blood,” Rey began, shaking her head slowly as she looked straight ahead.
“Not every person is the same.”
“Elizabeth, I have loved you my whole life.”
“This is what makes you stand out: your heart.”
“I just don’t like how they treat others.”
“The world is a cruel place, but there is still a ray of sunshine,” Elizabeth said, grinning.
Rey yawned and stretched out her arms.
“Do you need anything else before I retire for the night?”
“No,” Rey answered, yawning again.
“Perhaps it’s time for rest,” Elizabeth chuckled, getting to her feet.
“Goodnight, Elizabeth. Thank you for everything,” Rey said, looking up at her with a warm smile.
“It’s my pleasure, sweet girl. Rest and sleep well.”
“You do the same.”
“Goodnight, Rey. Again, sleep well,” Elizabeth said, giving a small bow of her head before leaving and shutting the door behind her, leaving Rey alone.
Rey sighed and turned toward the balcony, awe-struck by the night sky filled with stars. As a child, she had imagined being able to fly so she could truly be free.
To be free is a dream, a hopeless one at that. Rey thought, sighing as she gazed down at the garden of roses. She noticed a figure in armor standing there and quickly looked up at her, making her wince.
“Princess?” she heard Benjamin’s familiar voice whisper.
“Benjamin, what are you doing down there?” Rey whispered back, smiling warmly.
“Just making sure the garden is secure and that you are protected.”
“I can barely hear you."
Without another word, he climbed up on the castle orchard wall. Rey furrowed her brow in surprise, her mouth forming an O as he met her gaze.
“What are you doing?” she asked, looking up at him.
“I thought it was—I can leave if this upsets—”
“No,” Rey quickly interjected, shaking her head. “I was surprised by the act.”
“Well, you said you could barely hear me,” he replied, letting out a soft chuckle.
“You barely know me, but you’re willing to risk punishment by imprisonment or transportation… why?”
“I enjoyed our discussion earlier,” he answered, shrugging lazily.
“I enjoyed your company as well,” Rey said, nodding and grinning up at him.
“By the way, you can call me Ben; I prefer that.”
“Do your parents call you that?”
“Yes, along with the other knights.”
“Does my father call you that?”
“No, he is formal in how he addresses me,” Ben chuckled again.
“That sounds like him,” she responded, rolling her eyes and giggling softly.
Chapter 5: Conversation
Chapter Text
"So, did you know my bedroom is just above the rose garden?" Rey asked, furrowing her eyebrows as she gave Ben a small grin.
"No, I was assigned to watch the area and saw you as you seemed to appear out of nowhere," Ben replied, mirroring her expression.
"Maybe it's fate that we ran into each other here."
"Do you believe in fate?"
"Yes, I do. I believe that everything happens for a reason."
"Why do you think fate brought two strangers together on this beautiful starry night?" Ben asked.
"Aren't we all strangers to someone at some point?" Rey replied, looking up at the stars.
"I suppose so."
"As a child, I begged my mother for a rose garden. I love that flower, but she called me silly for loving a flower so much."
"Do you love all flowers?"
"No, just that one."
"What convinced her to let you have one?" Ben asked, intrigued.
Rey swallowed, keeping her eyes on the stars as she fought the urge to cry. Miramir had made it clear that she didn't care for Rey, and whenever Rey asked for something, she'd agree just to keep Rey busy and away from her.
"I guess she just wanted to humor me," Rey finally answered, glancing back at him and noticing his frown.
He silently studied her sad expression and debated whether to ask her what was wrong, wondering if she felt comfortable discussing it with a stranger.
"Ben, do you think I'm a spoiled princess?" she asked.
He blinked in surprise at her question.
"It's alright to admit it if you do; I admire honesty," she added.
"I don't think that at all. I think you are a wonderful, kind person," Ben answered, giving her a warm smile.
"But you barely know me," she replied, skepticism in her tone.
"Aren't we all strangers to someone at some point?" He echoed her earlier words, making her smile.
"May I share a secret with you?" Rey asked.
"You may, go on," he encouraged, smiling widely.
"I wish I could run away from here," she confessed.
"But don't you want your crown?" Ben wondered.
"I'd rather be free away, from here." Rey stated.
"But doesn't the crown offer freedom?" Ben asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"No. You are forever tied down to a way of life," she explained.
"So, you're not happy?" he asked gently.
"If being royalty made anyone happy, my parents would truly love one another and love me," she quickly replied.
Chapter 6: Sunrise
Chapter Text
"Did we speak the entire night away?" Rey asked, looking up at the rising sun as she gazed at the sky.
"I believe so," Ben replied, smiling at her.
"I’ve had such a lovely time."
"As did I."
"Isn't the sky beautiful?"
"Yes, you are," he said softly, his voice flirtatious, still looking at her as she admired the sky.
"Hm?" Rey murmured, turning her gaze back to him.
"You are beautiful."
Rey's face flushed red, and she smiled awkwardly, rubbing the back of her neck.
"I shall never forget this night."
"Neither will I, Ben."
"You have given me the best night of my life."
Feeling a rush of emotions, Rey walked toward him and looked into his eyes. Her gaze dropped to his lips, then back up to his eyes, her heart racing. They shared a silence that felt as if they were conversing without words. Rey swallowed nervously and leaned in closer. Her heart raced faster as he slowly leaned toward her.
"Rey!" Elizabeth's voice suddenly rang out, causing both Rey and Ben to widen their eyes in shock. Rey quickly stepped back as panic set in.
"You must leave now," Rey whispered urgently, and Ben rushed toward the balcony to climb out onto the wall.
"Rey! Where are you?" Elizabeth called.
"Will I see you again?" Ben whispered, looking deep into her eyes.
"Meet me here tonight," she murmured softly. "I cherished the night we spent together."
"As you wish, princess," Ben replied, lowering his voice.
"Rey," she corrected him.
"Rey," Ben murmured, his voice soothing, and the sound of her name from his lips sounded as sweet as a dessert. "I shall see you again tonight."
"I will see you again."
"I'm counting the minutes until I see you."
"Rey, are you still in bed?" Elizabeth yelled as footsteps approached. Rey gave Ben a silent look while he climbed down the wall.
"No, I was enjoying the sky," Rey replied as she walked inside, hoping Ben would escape far enough to avoid suspicion.
"Why are you still in your nightgown?" Elizabeth asked, raising an eyebrow at Rey's behavior.
"I just woke up," Rey said quickly, shrugging. "The sky is beautiful, isn't it?"
"Yes, but your mother requests your presence immediately."
"I understand. Please inform her I will be down in a few minutes. I won't be long." Rey said, offering a smile.
"Of course," Elizabeth said, giving a slow nod as she noticed Rey's forced innocent smile.
Chapter 7: Exhausted
Chapter Text
Rey quickly ran into the dining room, where Miramir awaited her. Miramir's hair was let down, and she wore an Edwardian-style, white summer dress—a flowing, light purple gown. Rey wasn’t certain if it was made of lightweight cotton or muslin, but it featured delicate embroidery and subtle textural details. The dress had a V-neckline, complemented by lace or mesh layering. Rey was grateful that the sleeves were short and slightly puffed, ensuring she wouldn’t be too hot in the summer heat. She finished the outfit with a wide, light pink sash. The dress also included a delicately patterned lace parasol, adding a touch of refinement and an element of sun protection, which Rey appreciated.
"I sincerely apologize for making you wait, Mother," Rey said, looking at Miramir.
"Why were you late, child?" Miramir asked, a hint of annoyance in her voice.
"I lost track of time and—"
"Your hair is a mess, and you look exhausted," Miramir cut her off. "Did you sleep at all?"
"Yes, Mother," Rey quickly lied, nodding her head.
"Did you sleep well?"
"Well... I did have some trouble sleeping."
"It shows; I see it in your eyes."
"You do?" Rey murmured, swallowing nervously as she blinked her hazel eyes.
"Yes, I do," Miramir replied simply.
Does she know about last night? Rey thought to herself as she nodded silently.
"Make sure Elizabeth braids your hair and fixes your face," Miramir continued. "You look poor and not pretty. Your father is leaving for France; make sure to bid him farewell if you wish to before he goes."
Rey slowly nodded, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion at the news. She wondered why her father had to leave. Most of the time, it was for trading with allies or perhaps to avert a war if there was such a threat. But she knew her mother meant she had to say goodbye; otherwise, it would look bad if the princess wasn’t seen with the king before his departure.
"France has become an ally of England," Miramir said, as if she read Rey's mind. "Your father and the King of France will discuss some sort of trading."
"What kind of trading?" Rey asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Not sure, but you must look your if you decide to bid your father a sweet farewell."
You mean when I do bid farewell since you force me to each time, Mother. Rey thought, fighting the urge to roll her eyes.
"Did you understand all of that?" Miramir asked, raising an eyebrow and glaring at Rey.
"Yes, Mother. I won't disappoint you," Rey assured her with a quick nod.
"Very good. The ship will leave soon."
Without another word, Rey turned and headed upstairs, where she saw Elizabeth waiting at the top of the stairs. They exchanged smiles.
"Father, I was told you will be leaving on a quest to France," Rey said, watching as Dathan moved towards his ship. He stopped and turned to face her, annoyance clear in his expression as he glared down at her.
"You must behave; obey your mother as you should," Dathan said sternly.
"Yes, Father. I won't disappoint you."
"No childish games; you are a woman now."
"Of course, Father. I know the example I must set."
"Don't behave in a manner I wouldn’t approve of."
"Yes, Father. How long will you be away?" Rey asked, furrowing her eyebrows and crossing her arms.
"Two weeks. I trust Elizabeth will be of help while I'm gone," Dathan murmured.
"She's always been loyal to us in times of need."
"Well, I bid you farewell; be of good spirits."
"And you as well."
"I shall see you soon." Dathan gave a quick nod and walked away towards the boat without giving Rey a chance to speak further as she watched him.
Chapter 8: Share A Swim
Chapter Text
After a long morning of endless tasks, Rey wanted to enjoy any bit of sun she could before twilight set in. She ran barefoot toward the hill, heading toward the river, secretly hoping that Ben would come by and share a conversation or a swim. Quickly, she climbed up a tree and jumped into the cool water, surfacing to catch her breath as she looked up the hill, wishing to see Ben. I’m counting the minutes until I see you. His words echoed in her mind, making her heart melt while also torturing her. He was a stranger, yet he brought her a sense of pure joy she had never experienced before. It felt like he had put a spell on her, and even if that were true, she wouldn’t mind or care.
“I wish I had said the same thing to him,” Rey murmured to herself, frowning down at the water. No childish games; you are a woman now. Dathan’s voice echoed in her head, taunting her. Don’t behave in a manner I wouldn’t approve of. His words continued to haunt her thoughts.
“He's not here; he won't be for two weeks,” Rey reminded herself with a sigh, smiling up at the sky. Besides dealing with her mother, who mostly ignored her existence, she felt freer than ever. It was rare, but whenever Dathan was away, Rey felt the happiest she could be. She thought of Ben and the time they had shared, making her smile as she lay on her back, floating in the water with her eyes closed.
Meanwhile, Ben walked around the palace, ensuring everything was in order and secure. After checking every inch, he decided to secretly look for Rey. He knew it was a risk to be seen with her, but to him, she was worth it. Not seeing her drove him mad; he worried for her safety, remembered the river, and headed in that direction, hoping to find her.
Within moments of reaching the hill, he looked down and saw her floating on her back, eyes closed. His heart sank, and adrenaline coursed through his veins. His eyes widened in horror as he began to run.
“Princess!” Ben shouted, forgetting his earlier thoughts as he raced to the tree and jumped in, swimming after her. Within moments, he reached her, grabbing her in his arms and helping her sit up. She opened her eyes and looked at him.
“What on earth are you doing?” Rey asked, swimming a few inches away and glaring at him.
“I thought—you were on your back.”
“I was floating, trying to relax until you—”
“I thought you were…”
“Oh,” she gasped, her eyes widening as she realized how worried he was, the terror evident on his face.
“What is it?” Ben asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Besides Elizabeth, who else has cared for me?” she responded, swimming closer to him. “No one has ever worried about me like that before until you.”
“I care for you, not just as a princess, but…”
“But what, Ben?”
Ben didn’t respond. Instead, he swam closer to her and pulled her in for a kiss. Her arms naturally wrapped around his shoulders as they shared the kiss, both of their eyes closed. In that moment, she felt at peace, as if it were the right thing to do. But she quickly pulled away, remembering their reality.
“Ben, I don’t want you to be transferred or—”
“It’s alright; you are all that matters.”
“Ben, we have to be careful,” she sighed, swimming a few inches away.
“We have been.”
“I wouldn’t call your reckless attempt to save my life and kissing me being careful.”
“So, what do you suggest we do?”
“We avoid each other during the daytime,” she suggested, “unless my mother or father calls for you.”
“But your father is away, is he not?” Ben asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
“Yes, but my mother is not,” she answered, thinking about how it felt like she was, and sighed in defeat.
“May I still visit you at night?” Ben asked, getting her attention.
“You better,” she replied teasingly as they both smiled. “Otherwise, you’ll break my heart.”
“We wouldn’t want that, would we?” Ben asked, giving her a cheeky grin.
“I hope not.” Rey giggled.
Chapter Text
My dearest Rey,
I hope this letter finds you well. I also hope you can forgive me for entering your room while you were away. Don’t worry, no one saw me. However, I couldn't wait to say this to you, so I chose to write this letter and left it on your pillow in hopes of making your day brighter. I miss you dearly—your rose scent, your smile, and your laugh. I miss every little detail about you. I can't forget what happened at the river today. I still count the minutes until I can see you again.
Until we meet again,
Ben
Rey stared at the letter, blushing deeply as she grinned from ear to ear. She kept rereading it as much as she could before the next day. She knew that if anyone saw this, her parents would be angry, and she would lose him forever. Rey mentally planned to give it back and ask him to destroy any evidence of it or throw it into the river when she got the chance.
"Rey?" Elizabeth said as she opened Rey's bedroom door, causing Rey to panic as her face went pale. She quickly crumpled the letter and shoved it under her pillow.
"Yes, Elizabeth?" Rey asked, getting to her feet and raising an eyebrow, looking at Elizabeth.
"Do you need anything before I retire for the night?"
"No, thank you. I hope you sleep well."
Elizabeth raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"What's the matter?"
"Nothing's wrong; I'm just very tired."
"You look like you've seen something that frightened you."
"I just need to sleep, that's all," Rey insisted.
"I would assume so," Elizabeth chuckled as she walked toward her. "You had a long day after not resting well."
"I'm sure I will sleep well tonight."
"I hope so. Are you sure you don't need anything?"
"Yes, I’m sure. You should go to bed."
Elizabeth raised an eyebrow, scrutinizing Rey's expression.
"I truly don’t need anything, I promise," Rey insisted, hoping Elizabeth would believe her as she prayed Ben wouldn’t climb up at that very moment.
"Well, I bid you a farewell for now."
"And I, you."
"Sleep well," Elizabeth said in a half-serious tone as she grinned.
"Of course, Elizabeth," Rey replied, watching as Elizabeth began to leave.
"Rey?" Elizabeth called, opening the bedroom door again.
"Yes?"
"Be careful. Some people don’t care for others as you do."
"What do you mean?"
"Just get some rest," Elizabeth quickly responded.
Rey gave her a quick nod, but her sad expression never changed as Elizabeth left, closing the door behind her. Rey felt confused and frozen, unsure of what Elizabeth had meant.
Notes:
So it's my birthday. Sorry, this was cut short. I may be really busy today but I wanted to upload something.
Chapter 10: Shared Secret
Chapter Text
Rey looked up at the starry night, sighing as the cool summer breeze enveloped her. It relaxed her as she tried to distract her mind from him. His presence was intoxicating, and she longed to see him again soon. She squeezed the letter he had sent, dreading the thought of letting it be destroyed. His words were as sweet as her favorite dessert, and she tried to hear his voice each time she reread them. She remembered what Elizabeth had said before she retired for the night, causing Rey to frown as the words echoed in her mind: Be careful. Some people don’t care for others as you do.
"What on earth could that mean?" Rey whispered to herself.
"Rey?" A whisper broke her trance. She quickly looked down, her eyes lighting up with joy at the sight of Ben.
"Ben, I knew you would return," Rey whispered back.
"Back away so I may climb up."
"Of course," she quickly responded, stepping back to give him space.
Without hesitation, Rey heard his light footsteps as he climbed up the wall. She turned towards her bedroom, making sure no one would check on her, silently praying that no one could hear him. Turning back, she heard him jump down and walk toward her.
"Be quiet; we must not let anyone hear or suspect anything," Rey whispered as she approached him, locking her gaze on his eyes.
"I trust you had a good day?" Ben asked, smiling warmly down at her.
"Yes, and you?"
"I did, indeed."
"You were all I thought about."
"And you were all I could think about," he replied.
She blushed deeply at that and giggled.
"Did you receive the letter on your pillow?"
"Yes, and it was truly beautiful."
"Was it truly?" Ben asked, smiling widely.
"The most beautiful letter I have ever read," she answered, handing it to him.
"What is this?" Ben asked, furrowing his brow.
"Your letter. You must destroy it."
"Is there no—”
"No," she interrupted, frowning. "I have no place to keep it safe."
"I apologize; I seemed to let my mind wander," Ben said, putting the crumpled, balled-up letter in his pocket.
"I will forever remember those beautiful words."
"I can't forget what happened at the river."
"Neither could I."
Ben stepped closer and cupped her face, softly rubbing her cheeks. She smiled up at him, batting her long eyelashes. Her gaze dropped to his lips, and she quickly looked back up into his eyes.
"I have never felt so safe until I met you," Rey whispered.
"I feel the same, Rey," Ben replied, lightly resting his forehead against hers.
"Are we going mad?"
"Perhaps, but I only wish to be mad for you."
She leaned in and kissed him softly, and he quickly returned the kiss. Both closed their eyes, sharing this secret moment together in peace. She had never felt so safe and certain of herself before this. She wanted the moment to last forever as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Rey?" Ben whispered, pulling away and opening his eyes.
"Yes?" Rey responded, keeping her eyes closed.
"I love you," Ben said, causing her to open her eyes wide.
Chapter 11: Love
Chapter Text
"You what?" Rey gasped, her eyes widened with shock.
"I love you," Ben repeated his words, lowering his voice.
"You love me?"
"Yes, since the moment we met it's as if you bewitched me."
Rey giggled at that as she stared at him. She was surprised at his confession but she wasn't upset by this.
"Do you love me as I love you?"
"Yes," she answered and nodded her head slowly.
"You do?" Ben asked, blinking in surprise as his face grew into a smile.
"My love for you is deeper than the ocean."
"I thought you'd never say that."
"I wish we could show our love to the world."
"You are all I care for," he responded, taking her hands and giving them a light squeeze.
"You are all I care for as well."
"I will ask your father for your hand and ask you to marry me, Rey," he whispered softly as he got down on one knee.
"What?" Rey gasped, her eyes widening as she watched him.
"Marry me in front of God and we shall spend our days together as man and wife."
"I want you to say yes, I do."
"Then what stops you from saying yes?" Ben asked, getting back up on his feet as he frowned.
"The law says I must marry a man of noble blood or a prince from another country."
"Does this only work for princesses?"
"No," she sighed, shaking her head. "If the heir is a prince, he must marry a woman of noble blood or a princess from another country."
"What can we do?"
"Perhaps, I can convince my father to change the law."
"Will he drop it if you ask?"
"I'm not sure," she answered and sighed. Her father wasn't the kindest man. Elizabeth's words echoed back into her mind. Be careful. Some people don’t care for others as you do. Her face fell at those words.
"What troubles you, my love?" Ben asked.
"What if my father denies my request?" Rey asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Then I will love you always even if from a distance."
"If he denies me, I shall run away with you."
"But what about your crown?"
"I do not care for my crown," she quickly answered. "If you ask me to run away with you then I will. I will give up my crown just to be with you."
"But I have no riches, I cannot give you the life you deserve."
"I do not care for those riches, I want to choose who I love freely and I love you."
"You would run away with me?"
"I would, no questions asked," Rey answered and smiled.
"First, I want you to meet my mother and father," Ben responded.
"I believe my mother says I can rest tomorrow."
"Then you can accompany me tomorrow?"
"Yes, but I need to be hidden, meet me at the garden, I will wear something that can hide my face and I shall meet your mother and father."
"And if you say yes," he began to say as he mirrored her expression. "We shall go to a church and get married in secret as God, my father, and my mother witness."
"Yes," she said with no hesitation. "I want nothing more than to be your wife for the rest of my life."
Chapter 12: Awake
Chapter Text
"Rey, rise and shine!" Rey heard as her eyes widened, she sat up and quickly looked around, looking for Ben, and quickly remembered him leaving and she sighed in relief as she saw her bedroom door open as Elizabeth walked in.
"Was that your voice I heard?" Rey asked as she yawned, stretching her arms.
"Yes, I was making sure you were awake," Elizabeth answered, looking at her. "I trust you slept well?"
"Yes, it was the best sleep of my life," Rey answered, getting out of bed.
"I could have sworn I heard the sounds of sweet birds chirping last night."
Rey blinked her eyes, raising an eyebrow at Elizabeth.
"Did I say something wrong, Rey?" Elizabeth asked.
"No, I just didn't hear any birds."
"I suppose it was just me, perhaps I may be going mad."
Rey stood there for a few moments watching Elizabeth grin as she went to the other side of her bed and began to make it. Rey quickly helped as she wondered why she would say it. She swallowed nervously as they both continued to make the bed. She wanted to ask her, she wanted to tell her about Ben but she couldn't. Rey felt trapped in her own mind.
"Do you have plans for today?" Elizabeth asked, breaking the silence.
"I do, I plan to go out into the woods, collect berries." Rey lied, praying she would believe it.
"That sounds lovely."
"Did my mother want to know of my whereabouts?"
"No, I was curious, you like to run off when you can."
Rey stayed quiet, relieved of her response as she fought a small smile.
"I hope you remembered what I told you," Elizabeth said, giving her a glance as they stopped.
"What do you mean by this?" Rey asked nervously, forcing a light laugh.
"I have known you since you were a baby."
"I know this to be the truth."
"You can trust me, I swear it."
"Elizabeth..."
"I know you better than you know yourself," Elizabeth began to say as she walked towards Rey. "I'm not sure exactly what you are up to, but I can tell a man has stolen your heart."
Rey's face went pale as she swallowed, her eyes widened with horror.
"My child, your secret is safe with me." Elizabeth assuaged her, giving her a weak smile.
"He is not of noble blood or a prince."
"Is he the new knight, Benjamin? Has he stolen your heart?"
"Yes, he is the one who has stolen my heart away," Rey admitted, giving a quick nod.
"Have you decided on how to go about this?"
"We have a plan but I shall ask my father to change the law."
"You must never do such a thing, you can't." Elizabeth quickly responded, her eyes widened.
Rey blinked in confusion, not sure why she insisted on the matter.
"You can never trust him when it comes to this matter," Elizabeth warned. "Do you remember my word of warning, child?"
"Be careful. Some people don’t care for others as you do." Rey repeated her words.
"Trust me, child, he won't understand this matter."
"Why not? He might be heartless at times but--"
"Your father would never allow this courtship of yours."
"But how could you be so sure of such a thing?"
"I beg of you," Elizabeth began to say, and sighed. "Do not confess this to him. He has never been understanding of others as you are."
"Alright, I shall not echo a word of this."
"I only want what is best for you."
"Will you give me your word on this?" Rey asked, not completely believing it.
"Your father and mother will not know a thing."
"If they find out my secret, they could imprison--"
"I know what the man could face."
"Why do you wish to keep this secret?"
"Because I love you, I want you to be happy."
"But I still don't understand why," Rey responded.
"I once loved a man and I lost him," Elizabeth answered as her face fell an frowning.
"What? When? How?"
"It was years ago," Elizabeth responded in a sad tone as her eyes wandered as if she were remembering something. "But what matters now to me is you," she added in a soft whisper, cupping her face in a motherly way, making Rey smile
"I shall return at night, but what shall you tell my mother if she asks about my whereabouts?" Rey asked as Elizabeth let her go.
"That you are picking berries."
"I am grateful to have you, thank you."
"Of course, now you must get ready to meet him," Elizabeth responded. "We mustn't look like we just got out of our slumber, yes?" Elizabeth asked, teasing her as they both giggled.
"No." Rey giggled, shaking her head.
Chapter 13: Charmer
Chapter Text
Elizabeth successfully helped Rey escape from the castle. She wore a deep red cloak with a hood; the fabric was thick and textured, designed for warmth and protection, while also serving to conceal her identity from anyone who might recognize her. The cloak fastened at the neckline with a small square clasp. Beneath it, she wore a striking long light blue dress with a patterned texture and crinkled fabric that added depth. The sleeves were long and loose, ensuring her comfort.
Her hair was braided and tucked away under the dark hood, allowing her to keep her head down and avoid drawing any attention that might reveal her true identity.
Ben noticed a few quick glances directed toward them, but none of the observers seemed inclined to inquire about the princess. It was as if they were unaware of her true identity.
As Rey and Ben held hands and made their way to his family's cottage, they both felt relieved that no one stopped to question her. Rey lifted her head and smiled at Ben as they stood in front of the cottage door.
"It surprises me that no one has asked about you," he said, giving her a warm smile. "You are the most beautiful of them all."
"I’m relieved to hear that; my heart was racing," Rey replied, letting out a giggle.
"But you are truly one of a kind."
"Perhaps everyone who saw us simply thought I was common."
"You are anything but common."
"Has anyone ever told you that you are quite the charmer?"
"All the time," he joked, and they both laughed.
Chapter 14: Warning
Chapter Text
"It is such an honor to meet the princess," Leia said, smiling at Rey.
"Well, you have such a lovely home," Rey replied, mirroring her smile.
"So, what brings you here?" Leia asked.
"Ben and I have something to discuss with you."
"What is it, son?" Leia inquired, looking at Ben.
"I asked Rey for her hand in marriage and—"
"I said yes! We're getting married in secret," Rey exclaimed, her eyes lighting up with joy.
"We will be man and wife!" Ben declared, grinning as he turned to Rey.
Leia and Han's eyes widened, and they both fell silent. A palpable tension filled the room as everyone exchanged awkward glances. Finally, Ben decided to break the silence.
"What troubles you both?" Ben asked.
"I don't think I can approve of this, son," Han replied, concern etched on his face.
"Why not, Father? Didn't you tell me to make my life worth living?" Ben questioned, his smile fading into a frown.
"Yes, but if the king finds out, you could be executed."
"No, dear," Leia quickly corrected, shaking her head slowly. "That was outlawed years ago."
"Then what could happen?" Han asked.
"Imprisonment or exile," Rey answered, her expression turning serious.
"But he is a commoner; the king won't recognize the marriage," Leia countered.
"But he is a knight; things could be worse for him," Han argued.
"So, you would let Ben risk that? His work for you?" Leia asked.
"I would never ask him to risk anything for me," Rey said firmly.
"You are agreeing to marry Ben," Han stated sternly. "That puts everything he has worked so hard for at risk."
"I'm sorry," Rey said, heembling as tears welled in her eyes. "Thank you for allowing me into your home. Forgive me but I must be going."
"Rey, where are you going?" Ben asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Perhaps we should call off the wedding and say our goodbyes." She stood up abruptly and rushed out the door.
Chapter 15: Promises
Chapter Text
Han was right, and Rey knew it. She wanted to keep her distance to protect Ben and his livelihood. She felt foolish for allowing herself to fall for him and for letting him choose her over his family.
"Rey, where are you going?" Ben asked, chasing after her as they were just a few inches away from his home.
"I am going back to where I belong!" Rey shouted, not turning to look at him as she ran.
"Rey, please!"
"Ben," she sighed as she stopped and turned to face him. They both paused, exchanging sad glances.
"Don't let their words fill you with fear."
"I'm not scared for myself; I am scared for you."
"Rey, I love you. Isn't that enough?" Ben asked, stepping closer and keeping his eyes locked on her.
"They're right; it's you who risks everything."
"I know you want to protect me, but it's my choice."
"I may not have a family," she sighed, looking into his warm hazel eyes, "but I will not be selfish and take you away from yours for my own happiness."
"But you do have a family; you have me," he replied quickly, placing a hand on her cheek.
"Ben, I love you... But I can't make you choose."
"It's my choice, not anyone else's, and I choose you."
"But—"
"I love you. Don't go without me," he pleaded softly, resting his forehead against hers. "Marry me. Ne dis pas non, mon amour. Je t'aime. Tu ne seras plus seule. Je te le promets." He whispered gently while wiping away her tears.
She blinked in confusion at those words. "What does that mean?"
"It's French, and I beg you not to say no."
"No one will allow this."
"I love you. You won't be alone anymore. I promise," he repeated.
"I don't want you to hate and resent me," she sobbed softly, closing her eyes tight.
"I won't; nothing matters to me more than you, princess."
She sighed, finally opening her eyes and leaning back a little. "I'll marry you."
"You will?" Ben asked, his eyes widening as a smile spread across his face.
"As long as you stop calling me that," she said, playfully slapping him on the arm, causing him to react with an exaggerated "OW."
She gave him a stern look.
"What is it?"
"Do you promise me?"
"Yes, my love!" Ben chuckled.
"I asked you not to call me that!" Rey giggled.
"I know, I know," he laughed, playfully rolling his eyes.
Chapter 16: To Wed
Chapter Text
It took a day longer than planned due to the pastor preparing for the secret wedding between Rey and Ben. However, for them, the wait was worth it as they were excited to spend the rest of their lives together. Everything was going perfectly.
That night, they snuck out of the church to meet the pastor and get married in secret. Neither wore fancy clothing; they wanted to blend in with the common folk and avoid raising any suspicion. This moment was tender and intimate, filled with a heavy sense of pure love and attraction.
Pastor Ellis greeted the young couple with a warm smile. "Are we ready, young ones?"
"I'm ready. Are you?" Rey asked, looking at Ben.
"Yes," Ben replied with a smile.
"Then come, my children," Ellis began, his smile growing. "Stand before the Lord and one another."
Rey and Ben quickly held hands as they stood before the simple altar, both smiling at each other, waiting for Ellis to speak.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here in the sight of God to join together this man and this woman in holy matrimony…" Ellis said, keeping his eyes on the couple. His words echoed faintly in the empty chapel, mingling with the creaking of old timbers. No one else was in sight. Ben glanced at Rey, his steady expression reassuring her.
"Ben Solo, wilt thou have this woman to thy wedded wife?"
"I will... for all eternity," Ben answered, squeezing her hands lightly.
"And Rey, wilt thou have this man to thy wedded husband?" Ellis asked, looking at her.
"I will," Rey whispered softly, smiling as she squeezed his hands in return.
Ben quickly produced a plain silver ring he had bought and slipped it onto Rey's finger, his hand trembling slightly with overwhelming happiness.
"With this ring, I thee wed," Ben began, looking down at her hand. "With my body, I thee honor, and with all my worldly goods, I thee endow."
"With this ring," Rey repeated, placing his ring on his wedding finger. "With my body, I thee honor, and with all my worldly goods, I thee endow." Her words held a sweet, quiet conviction. A silence settled as Ellis lifted his hand.
"By the power vested in me, I pronounce you man and wife. What God hath joined together, let no man put asunder."
There was a long pause as the three stood in silence, allowing the young couple to absorb the moment. Then Rey let out a soft laugh, almost in disbelief. Ben caught her in a brief, fierce embrace.
"We’ve really done it, haven't we?" Rey giggled.
"Yes, and whatever comes next, we’ll face it together," Ben promised.
They stood close together, their foreheads nearly touching and their hands clasped between them. Ben's eyes were locked on Rey's. She leaned in, pulling him in for a loving kiss, which he returned, wrapping his arms around her waist as Ellis remained quiet, letting them have their moment.
Chapter 17: Newly Wed
Chapter Text
Rey and Ben walked through the night as husband and wife, filled with pure joy. It felt as if nothing else mattered but them. No one noticed them as Rey hid beneath her red hood. Although the castle was in sight, it was still a bit of a walk.
Ben sighed. "I’m somewhat surprised not to see a knight around."
"I’m surprised too, my love," Rey whispered.
They continued to walk in silence, their hearts racing as they thought of things to say, both overwhelmed with joy. Tongues were tied with silent sweet nothings singing in their heads.
"I can’t believe we are married," she giggled as they continued to walk toward the castle.
"I can’t believe it either. It feels like a dream," he replied quickly, taking her hand.
"Perhaps, if possible, I could convince my father to bless our union," Rey said, stopping to face him.
"Rey, I don’t think it’s wise for either of us," he replied.
"I would only suggest changing the law."
"And then what?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Then I will speak of you."
"But what if he says no—"
"Then I will run away with you, and it will be as if no one else exists."
Ben cupped her face in his hands as she smiled up at him. Leaning in, they kissed softly and lovingly. Her arms wrapped around his neck, and his wound gently around her waist.
"Ben, we leave the moment my father says no," she said softly, pulling away quickly.
"Until then, we shall share these secret moments," Ben whispered.
"I love you."
"And I love you."
"I hate that we have to sneak around like this."
"It won’t last forever," he assured her, leaning his forehead against hers. "In time, we will be open."
"Until then," she sighed as she removed her wedding ring and slipped it into his left pocket. "You must keep this for me."
"Shall I go and bid you farewell?"
"Not now; I know a secret passage."
He furrowed his brow in confusion. "To the castle?"
She nodded. "Yes, and to my room."
His eyes widened in surprise at her response. "I have only been in your room completely to send a letter."
"But now you are my husband, and I will spend my wedding night with you."
"Are you sure? What if by tomorrow someone—"
"Do not worry about that. Worry about now."
"I cannot risk ruining your reputation—"
"What about yours? Is that what troubles you?"
"Mine is meaningless to me. All I care for is you."
"Be with me tonight."
"I don't know if I can."
"It’s what I want. Be with me," Rey pleaded, cupping his face.
"I love you so much."
"And I love you so much," she quickly responded, kissing him again.

Chapter Text
Rey's eyes fluttered open as she yawned and stretched her arms. Turning her head, she noticed the other side of the bed was empty, and a frown spread across her face, disappointed by her husband's absence.
"You always fly away, my love," Rey murmured to herself, shaking her head slowly. Just then, she heard the bedroom door open and saw Elizabeth rush into the room.
"Your father has returned," Elizabeth announced, looking at Rey expectantly.
Rey's eyes widened in shock. "What?"
"He returned an hour ago."
"But he was supposed to be away for two weeks!"
"I'm just as surprised as you are."
Rey quickly got to her feet and began to dress.
"He is overjoyed and expects your presence," Elizabeth added, her tone slightly annoyed as she helped Rey get ready.
Rey rolled her eyes in frustration. "I suppose everything went well in France."
"Is she ready yet?" Dathan hissed as Rey emerged from her room.
"I'm here, Father," Rey called out, rushing down the stairs, with Elizabeth following closely behind. "Elizabeth says you are overjoyed."
"Our new alliance is strong, and we have traded well," Dathan replied.
"What kind of trade?" Rey asked as she reached the bottom of the stairs and stepped closer to her father, with Miramir standing beside him.
"The king has given us some extra riches."
Rey snorted. "Extra riches? We have enough already."
"There is never enough," he chuckled.
"What have you given in return?" Rey inquired, raising an eyebrow as she noticed her mother's wide smile.
"He has offered his younger brother, Raoul, to come here to England."
Rey furrowed her brows in confusion. "Why?"
"You and Raoul are to be married," Miramir answered, beaming with delight.
"What?" Rey gasped, her eyes widening as a lump formed in her throat.
"Next month, you are to become a wife."
Rey blinked, feeling speechless as her stomach twisted in knots.
"You shall wed and produce an heir to the throne."
"Mother, Father, this is not what I want."
"It is done; your father has agreed to the marriage."
"But Raoul must be next in line, surely," Rey replied, blinking in disbelief.
"That is only if he cannot produce an heir. However, if he can, Raoul will be second in line, making it unlikely for him to become king of France."
Tears began to well up in Rey's eyes. "But Father, I don't know Raoul."
"In time, you will, and you shall produce an heir."
"I don't love him!" Rey cried, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"You don't need love in a marriage," Dathan retorted, giving Miramir a quick glance before turning back to Rey.
"I refuse to marry Raoul!" Rey shouted.
"You shall if it's the last thing you do!" Dathan yelled, shoving Rey against the wall roughly, causing her to wince.
Her expression was tense and defiant, her jaw set, and her lips pressed together. Her father was inches away from her face, making her feel uneasy and scared. The strong light highlighted her fair skin and sharp profile, emphasizing her fear as she gulped.
"Your highness, please let her go, she—"
"Stay out of this, Elizabeth, or I shall have your head!" Dathan threatened, glaring at her.
"She's just a girl," Elizabeth argued, standing next to Rey.
"But she is my daughter, not yours. Learn your place."
"Father, leave her be," Rey sobbed.
"You shall marry him," Dathan hissed, gripping her chin tightly as he glared down at her. "Or else, I will no longer have a daughter."
"Father, please—don't make me do this," Rey pleaded, sobbing as her eyes burned with tears.
He released her and scoffed. "You will marry him and will not disrespect me again."
"Yes, Father." Rey sobbed softly, swallowing hard as she shut her eyes tightly.
Chapter 19: Cruel
Chapter Text
"Father is not kind; he's a cruel man," Rey sobbed softly, burying her face in her pillow.
"I'm truly sorry you're going through this," Elizabeth responded, rubbing the back of Rey's shirt.
Rey sat up and began to wipe her tears. "You didn't have to stand up for me."
"I wouldn’t take it back. I love you as if you were my own."
"I just wish Father would love me like you do," Rey sniffed.
"Perhaps, for your safety, you should marry Raoul."
"Elizabeth, I can't marry him. I just can't."
"I know your heart is already spoken for, but you should bid your sweet Ben farewell."
"Elizabeth," Rey sobbed, shaking her head. "I can't. It's not that simple."
Elizabeth took Rey's hands and lightly squeezed them. "I want you to be happy, but your safety comes first."
Rey quickly shook her head.
"You must be Raoul's wife so you can be queen and encourage the future king to change the law."
"But I am already a man's wife," Rey admitted, forcing a weak smile.
"Rey..." Elizabeth trailed off, her eyes widening in surprise.
"I married Ben in front of God."
"When was this, child?"
Rey swallowed. "Last night."
Elizabeth gasped and covered her mouth in shock.
"If I marry Raoul, I will have committed adultery against my husband."
"What have you done? What were you—"
"Ben and I plan to run away," Rey said, cutting her off.
"But you will lose your crown."
"I do not want it. Please, Elizabeth, come with us. I plan to leave with Ben tonight."
"I would be honored to," Elizabeth responded, smiling softly. "But I can't. You are a young woman now. You don't need me anymore."
Rey felt tears welling up again. "But, Elizabeth, you are my mother."
"You are a wife now; you must start your own family and leave the past behind."
"I can't imagine my life without you."
"You have no choice," Elizabeth said. "Rey, I have lived my life and raised you as best I could, and I couldn't be more proud of you."
"I will miss you deeply."
"Are the plans carefully made?"
"We ride his horse and leave England."
"You can’t do such a thing."
"But you said I am a wife now," Rey furrowed her brow in confusion.
"Dathan will send his men to look for you, and Ben will be a prisoner or worse."
"Worse? He could just separate us if he chooses not to throw him in a cell."
"I've said too much. I shall help you both, but you must stay here a little while longer."
"What do you mean? What is too much?"
Elizabeth sighed in defeat as she frowned. "Did your father ever tell you about his brother?"
Rey raised an eyebrow. "His brother?"
"When you were a baby," Elizabeth sighed, "his brother Xavier visited for a ball."
"What kind of ball?"
"A ball to celebrate your birth. It was two years after your father went to England to marry your mother." Xavier and I..." she trailed off.
"What happened?"
"Well... he and I fell in love."
Rey blinked in surprise.
"Your father never approved; I was a maid after all."
Rey remained silent, wondering if her father had sent Xavier away to marry someone else. She kept her mouth closed and slowly nodded her head.
"He attempted to marry him off to some princess of Spain, I believe. Xavier refused, and we planned to run away together. As we were in the woods, your father followed us."
Rey frowned as she pieced together the story with every word spoken. She remembered Elizabeth's warnings and pictured herself in Elizabeth's place.
"They argued, and your father put a dagger in his heart. He told me that if I spoke a word of this and refused to come back as a maid, I too would have a dagger."
"Why did you never tell me?" Rey asked, her eyes widening in horror.
"You were a child, and it was your father."
"Why did you come back? You could have run away."
"I was ordered to care for you, and I loved you. I could never leave you behind," Elizabeth answered, giving a warm smile.
"I would have stood up for you. I still don't understand."
"I was scared, and I never wanted you to hate your father."
"But I do. I hate him," Rey said, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"And you mustn't. Hate is a sin, and you shall be with Ben for the rest of your days."
"But the wedding is a month away."
"You will be gone before Raoul gets here."
"Do you promise?" Rey asked, taking Elizabeth by the hand.
Elizabeth nodded. "You have my word."
Chapter 20: A Rose
Chapter Text
Ben grabbed a rose from the garden and grinned to himself. He turned it sideways and placed it in his mouth, wincing as the thorns pricked him and made him hiss in pain. There was no other way to carry it without damaging it. As painful as it was as he tasted the blood in his mouth, he didn’t care.
“My love,” Ben whispered as he climbed up the castle wall toward Rey’s bedroom, pausing to listen to the soft murmurs he could hear.
“Ben, is that you?” Rey whispered as she stepped out and looked down at the ledge.
Rey looked sad. Her eyes were puffy, and it seemed she had been crying. He yearned to grab her into his arms and hold her for the rest of his life. Still holding the rose in his mouth, he nodded, and she stepped back to let him climb up and land safely on the ground. That was when he noticed Elizabeth staring at him, which made his eyes widen.
Elizabeth rolled her eyes and laughed. “Oh, don’t worry, boy. I will keep this secret.”
Ben furrowed his thick eyebrows as he removed the rose from his mouth and held it out to Rey. “Are you sure we can trust her?”
“Oh, how romantic,” Elizabeth said, smiling at the rose.
“It’s for—”
“Rey, yes, I’m aware of your new union,” she interrupted.
“Again, Rey, how can we trust her?” Ben asked, concern etched on his face.
“I once was like you... many many years ago,” Elizabeth replied.
“What do you mean?” he pressed.
“I trust Elizabeth more than anyone else,” Rey chimed in, wiping her eyes. “She raised me, after all.”
“I heard of the king’s return,” Ben said, looking down at the rose in his hands. “Have you spoken to him?”
“Yes, and he has shared new information,” Rey answered.
Ben placed the rose on the ledge. “What information?”
Rey swallowed hard, a lump forming in her throat.
“What troubles you?” Ben asked, stepping closer and taking her hands in his.
“Her father has agreed to make Rey marry the younger brother of the king of France,” Elizabeth said, frowning.
“Why?” Ben asked, astonished.
“It was part of a trade for a new alliance.”
“When is the wedding date?” Ben inquired.
“A month from now. She is still quite upset,” Elizabeth said.
“Look at me,” he said, cupping Rey’s face gently.
“His name is Raoul,” she laughed, blinking up at him. “Such an awful name.”
He chuckled and nodded.
“What kind of person names their child something so terrible?”
“My dearest Rey, it will be alright. I’m here,” Ben reassured her.
“Elizabeth says she wants to help us escape,” Rey said, turning to face Elizabeth with a warm smile.
“I will help you both,” Elizabeth replied, watching them.
“We shall follow your lead,” Rey responded.
“I will do my best to get in contact with an old friend,” Elizabeth promised.
“An old friend?” Ben asked, curious.
“When Xavier and I attempted to escape, I had help,” Elizabeth explained.
“Who is Xavier?” Rey asked.
“Dathan’s brother. We loved each other,” Elizabeth said, her voice tinged with sadness.
“But you are—” Ben started, but Elizabeth interrupted.
“Xavier was killed by his brother,” she huffed. “And I stayed and took care of Rey.”
“With all due respect, if you couldn’t escape, how can you ensure our escape?” Ben raised an eyebrow.
“I won’t make any more mistakes; you have my word,” Elizabeth promised.
“Do forgive me,” Ben frowned. “I just want to keep Rey safe.”
“You are forgiven,” she smiled weakly. “Trust me, I see that in you. You are a fine young man.” She gave Rey a small grin.
“I only ask for your forgiveness because I was terribly rude,” Ben admitted.
“That you were, but I forgive you,” Elizabeth replied.
Ben blushed deeply, unsure of what to say next.
“You are as handsome as you are kind,” Elizabeth said with a warm smile.
He chuckled, “You flatter me.”
“If I didn’t know better, I’d believe you were trying to steal my husband’s affections,” Rey teased, grinning from ear to ear.
Elizabeth laughed and nodded. “Do you need me for anything else before I retire?”
“No, please go. Thank you, Elizabeth,” Rey replied.
Elizabeth gave a small bow, and Rey rolled her eyes. “I bid you and your husband goodnight.”
“Good night,” Rey whispered, nodding as she watched Elizabeth leave.
“She is lovely,” Ben chuckled, looking back at Rey.
“That she is,” Rey murmured softly, noticing the rose as she walked towards it. “Is this for me?”
“Yes,” he replied, watching her take it.
“You stole it from the garden,” she teased.
“Yes, but I wanted to surprise you.”
“And you have,” she said, holding it as she turned back to face him.
“Is it true? Is his name Raoul?” Ben asked.
Rey chuckled and nodded.
“My, my, what a pity,” he said with mock seriousness.
“I do not wish to marry him... I love you,” she confessed.
“And I love you,” Ben whispered.
Chapter 21: Plotting
Chapter Text
Ben sat down on the edge of Rey's bed. "If we are going to trust Elizabeth, you have to go along with your forced engagement."
Rey gawked, sitting beside him. "I would rather die a thousand deaths than marry a stranger whom I do not love or care for."
"You won't have to marry him."
"Then why say such foolishness?"
"So Dathan nor Miramir suspect a thing."
Rey rolled her eyes in annoyance.
"You must, Dathan sounds like a heartless man."
"It still baffles me that I must pretend to marry a man named Raoul." Rey snorted, crossing her arms.
"Yes... It is quite dreadful."
Rey lowered her arms and just stared at Ben. Taking him in as he stared deeply into her eyes. She smiled softly and he quickly mirrored her smile, making her blush deeply. She felt butterflies in her stomach.
"I have never loved anyone this much until you," she whispered softly, batting her long eyelashes and leaning in closer.
He smiled and leaned in, their foreheads touching. "I love you more than anything, princess."
She playfully rolled her eyes as she giggled. "You know I despise it when you address me as such."
"I know," he chuckled. "But I love to torture you."
"You proved that on that day at the river."
"You will never forget it, will you?"
She grinned, slowly shaking her head. "Never, I shall torture you with it in return."
