Call My Name Just Once, Please.

Summary:

Between Chapters 7 and 20. With spoilers.

Alcryst never believed in himself. Constantly compared to and in the shadow of his older brother. However, when he was tasked to meet with the Crown Prince of Firene and the Divine Dragon, he desired change within himself. Alear is ready to be there for Alcryst, and he is learning that he can rely on him and be HIM, instead of just the Divine Dragon, the leader of their army.

Notes:

I recently got Fire Emblem: Engage and have been really enjoying it, but I am surprised that my darling Alcryst isn't getting a lot of love alongside Alear. So here is my fav boys getting a love story. Enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Alear and Alfred were following Alcryst, the second prince of Brodia, with his retainers, Lapis and Citrinne, through the Royal Road towards the Grand Crossing and making their way to meet the Crown Prince Diamant and King Morion. Alear keeps peeking over at the prince, who took a shot at him. Alcryst is attempting to calm his retainers from their interaction a moment ago and reminding them that it was his fault for shooting at the Divine One, and that he should have known better.

“That is enough, Alcryst. If we so easily ambushed the Divine Dragon and the so-called Crown Prince of Firene. Then they are not worthy of being allies of Brodia.” Citrine glared back at the two following close behind.

“I agree with Citrinne. Please, stop blaming yourself, Prince Alcryst. You were protecting the border and us. That's worth more than these two demanding anything from us.” Lapis added a shape tone.

“Now wait a second, I was pointing out that if you had harmed the Divine One, Brodia’s reputation would have been damaged and there would have been consequences.” Alfred defended the women’s attitudes towards them.

“Terribly sorry, Crown Prince Alfred, but we were not talking to you.” Citrinne jabbed at Alfred.

“Wha-!” Alfred stopped in shock.

“Ah, Citrinne!” Alcryst protested.

“I believe this was a conversation between us. I didn’t think it was a Firene custom for people to include themselves in other people's private talks. Shows just how well Firene royals act.” Citrinne smirked. Lapis giggled at the annoyed face Alfred was making.

Alear giggled at his friend’s struggle. The Divine Dragon observed how quickly Alcryst’s retainers were there to defend him after Alferd scolded him for his actions. It was obvious to anyone that the two women loved and respected their prince dearly and were ready to defend him against anyone who could harm him. It was a shame that Alcryst did not seem to have the same view of himself. Retainers, servants, and stewards were there to serve and protect their lords and ladies, but the pure loyalty to a kind and worthy leader is demonstrated by the people who are willing to follow them, rather than just being duty-bound.

“Alright… I sincerely apologize for that. I was unaware that you were speaking to yourself, but certainly your volume and tone could have been heard by an entire army.” Alfred did his best to sound polite, but the twitch of his smile gave his irritation away.

“Oh! Well, if that is the case, then-” Citrinne continued to press before Alcryst stepped in.

“Please enough, Citrinne!” Alcryst interrupted. Citrinne stopped immediately. Shocked at first by the sudden sternness of her prince.

“Crown Prince Alfred, again, I am so sorry for my retainers. Please know they mean no harm, they’re just…” He looks back at his two most trusted retainers and friends. “Protective.” He said quietly, before bowing to the Firene Prince.

“Oh… I mean, it's no problem at all. I may have overstepped myself. I should be the one to apologize.” Alfred became flushed by the Brodian prince’s actions. “As they said, you were just protecting the border, and you had no way to know who we were.”

Alear watched in fascination as the second prince of Brodia was able to step in to break the tension of the conversation. It may have been an odd tactic for the amount of apologizing and bowing, but it got the job done. Even Citrinne and Lapis seemed more cooperative as they all traveled together.

Alcryst then turned towards the Divine Dragon, “Allow me to say this again, Divine One. I am sorry for taking a shot at you!”

Alear smiled gently, recalling the prince referring to him as charming. Right now, the prince was the one in his eyes who was ravishing. “It is all fine. We could have done things better, too. There is no fault with anyone here. Can we all agree on that?”

Everyone nodded their head in unison and continued heading towards the Grand Crossing. As they drew near, Alear began talking to Alcryst.

“Prince Alcryst, I must comment on your archery skills.” Alear reached to touch the area of his cheek where the arrow had slightly grazed him.

The arrow was skilled and powerful. Even as a warning shot, with no intention of killing. Alear knew that shot, that beautifully aimed to graze right beside his cheek, had the precision and power to slay an enemy in one shot. Alear chuckled in remembering the sudden gasp of shock that spiked through his body when he first felt that arrow fly past him, realizing he could have been dead right there.

“No, no, Divine One, I’m really not all that skilled! I just-” Alcryst curled himself in discomfort. Alear observed that the prince really did not know just how amazing he was with a bow.

“He is one of the best archers in Brodia,” Lapis added, her face full of pride for her lord.

“No… Many of them are far more skilled than I am, Lapis. Please do not tell lies to the Divine Dragon.” Alcryst denied. Lapis and Citrinne looked heartbroken at their lord. They knew how wonderful and skilled a person Alcryst was, but he never believed them.

Alear made a mental note to himself that if they got Alcryst and his retainers to join their army, Alcryst would make an excellent archer addition. They had Etie, but having additional archers would be ideal for the upcoming battle.

“Alright, so tell me more about your older brother, Diamant. He’s the Crown Prince of Brodia, right?” Alear is attempting to continue the conversation with Alcryst.

“Yes, Diamant is everything a noble prince should be. Strong, wise, and humble. Unfortunately, he got me as a younger brother.” Alcryst continued to walk forward.

“There really is no need to be so hard on yourself.” Alear tried to convince the prince that he was being so harsh on himself again.

“There is no need to waste your kind words on a worm like me, Divine One. Unfortunately, I am the one to lead you to Brodia Castle, even if there is someone better. I promise I’ll do my best to get you there safely.” Alcryst said while still walking to the Grand Crossing.

“Ah, wait-” Alear wanted to say something, but was stopped by a hand on his shoulders. Looking back, he sees that it was the retainer, Citrinne.

“Thank you for your kindness, Divine One. However, Alcryst won’t believe your words right now.” Lapis smiled with a hint of sadness.

“Yes, we have tried for years to help with Alcryst’s lower view of himself, but unfortunately, the wounds cut deep. His self-esteem is something that has a deep root in his childhood, and cannot be healed right away.” Citrinne looked at her prince.

“Oh… I see. I apologize for interfering in personal matters. It just makes me sad that he views himself that way. Honestly, from what I have already seen, the prince is an excellent archer and seems genuinely compassionate and humble.”

Both Citrinne and Lapis smile at the Divine Dragon. Proud and pleased to know that even the Divine One has acknowledged their prince. This could be the change Alcryst needs to begin gaining some confidence in himself.

“Oh, just wait until you see him in action on the battlefield. Be careful, he may sweep your heart away like he did with Lapis here.” Cirtinne giggled in a playful tease.

“No! That is not true, Citrinne! I just admire Alcryst's bravery and his will to protect those around him!” Lapis quickly defends with a light blush.

Alear blinks in surprise, not expecting such a comment.  “Uh.. What-?” Alear begins before hearing Alcryst call out.

“Ah! There it is. The Grand Crossing.” Alcryst announced to the rest of the party, but then he noticed that Elusian soldiers were waiting for them on the Grand Crossing.

After their encounter with the second princess, Hortensia, the battle on the Grand Crossing began. Alear remarks on the trio’s teamwork and how perfectly in sync they are with each other. Lapis takes the front with graceful, yet powerful swipes of her sword. Citrinne was a master of casting spells, but what really caught Alear’s eyes was Alcryst. His need to stand in front of the two to protect them, ordering them to get behind him, and taking one-kill shots left and right with ease. Typically, archers were in the back, but he took to the front on his own. Invading many of the attacks targeted at him with astounding acrobatics and powerful encounters. Alear was impressed, and he was so glad to have the Brodian trio join their army against Sombron.

As the fight continues, Alear focuses his current fight against an axe-wielding Elusian, ready to take the final blow against them; however, a pegasus flyer sweeps up behind him for a surprise attack. The pegasus-flyer enemy’s lance was about to slash across his back; nobody else was nearby, and there was no time for him to dodge or counter. This attack would have been terrible with a serious injury! Thankfully, an arrow suddenly cut across the battle, piercing the Pegasus right between its base of the wing and the spine area. Cause the beast to go out of control in agony. Finally, another arrow came across, hitting the rider straight through the heart.

Alear looked where the arrow was shot from and found Alcryst standing behind his bow, muttering, "I'll apologize later!”

Alcryst ran up beside Alear, “Divine One, are you hurt!? Please get behind me! I'll protect you!” Alcryst extended a hand towards Alear. Who was the charming one here? Right now,  it was Alcryst who was being extremely charming and princely in Alear’s eyes!

Badump

“Be careful, he might sweep your heart away.” Citrinne's words echoed in Alear's mind. His eyes go wide. It's like that arrow hit his heart instead of the enemy!

No! Nooooo! Nope! It's just a stressful situation, and everything is running at a high level.

Alear shakes his head and focuses on the battlefield. Taking Alcryst's hand, the two aimed for Hortensia and brought her down together. For their first time fighting together, something just felt right to Alear. It was a perfect fit! Things just clicked, and if they continued to fight and train together, Alear could envision them fighting side by side and winning in the most dire situations.

After the battle, Hortensia unfortunately got away with one of the Emblem rings. Corrupting the Emblem rings. It made Alear sick thinking about it. They needed to find the remaining rings fast and reclaim the stolen rings. He checked on all his allies, but when he came across Alcryst, he felt a large smile naturally spreading across his face.

“Divine One, your leadership and strategy skills in battle are incredible! Honestly, I feel more at ease with you guiding me on where to shoot.” Alcryst praised.

Alear gulped down a nervous lump in his throat, feeling a slight blush spreading on his face. How did hearing praise from Alcryst make him feel anxious, but also excited? He has been receiving praises from many of his allies before, but this hits straight to the heart.

“I just do my best to make sure everyone gets out of the battle safe and sound.” Alear rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment. “Honestly, you saved me big time with that pegasus flyer earlier. Thank you,” Alear praised.

“-!” Alcryst reacted in shock.

“Umm, did I say something wrong? I’m sorry for making you feel uncomfortable." Alear worries.

“No, it's not that. It's just… You probably already noticed that I don't take praise well. I don't feel like I deserve them.” Alcryst confesses and lowers his head.

Alear stays silent, letting Alcryst continue his explanation. “But just now… I honestly didn't mind being complimented by you, Divine One. I really appreciated it.  I hope that wasn’t weird to say.” Alcryst shyly tucked his longest hair strand behind his ear.

CUTE!

WHAT THE HELL!!?

Such a simple move, no one would have a second thought about it, but it was making Alear's mind go to places he had never been before. Or at the very least, none that he can clearly remember.

Wait! Cute? Calling another person cute when you have just met them? Is that okay, or is that going into a creep area? !

“N-no, it's not weird at all. I'm honoured that you're okay with it. Actually, am-” Alear smiles, keeping calm and not letting his mind wander.

“Ah! Oh no, what am I doing!? I'm acting so casually with the Divine Dragon. I am so, so sorry! Please excuse my rude behaviour!” Alcryst interrupted and started to bow.

Wait, what just happened? “Ummm, Prince Alcryst, it's alright. Really, I'm just glad that you-” Alear tried to comfort the prince.

“Sorry, now that the bridge is clear, we can head to Brodia Castle. I'll take you there to meet Diamant and my Father.” Alcryst bowed again and headed back towards Lapis and Citrinne.

“Okay…” Alear signed. He felt his shoulder slump. He wanted to talk a bit longer and tell him that he would be honoured if the prince continued to fight beside him.

He suddenly could hear Alfred giggling behind him, “What's so funny, Alfred?” Aleat glares back at his first friend.

“Oh, nothing, buddy! Nothing at all.” Alfred attempted to hold in his giggles. “Feeling a little rejected there, Divine One?”

He noticed… Damn it!

How is the same guy, who is oblivious to Celine’s concerns for her brother’s health or the awkwardness Boucheron felt whenever the prince tended to feel up his muscles, able to see through Alear's disappointment of being cut short by a prince he just met?!

“I don’t know what you are referring to, Alfred, but thank you for your concern,” Alear stated firmly, feeling his eyebrow twitch. Alfred could not stop himself from bursting into laughter at the Divine Dragon sulking.

Alcryst met back with Citrinne and Lapis, getting ready to head back home to the castle. He pulled his hair to calm his nerves. He was so disrespectful to the Divine Dragon just now, acting all casual and too comfortable with a deity! Although it was so easy to talk with him. Alcryst glanced back at the Divine One; those kind, soft eyes were something to be seen, and that graceful smile was something that could capture anyone’s heart.

Strong arms swing the Liberation sword, delivering powerful strikes against enemies while protecting and commanding allies with excellent military precision in strategy. Ultimately, these strengths and determination are demonstrated in the battle. It was incredible—something Alcryst could not convey into words alone. The Divine Dragon truly shone through the ugliest of battle… something Alcryst could never do. Standing beside the Divine One in battle would be an unlikely dream to a worm like him.

“Are we taking a peek at the Divine One, there? Hmmm…. Alcryst?” Citrinne suddenly came into Alcryst’s sight in front of the Divine Dragon. The biggest teasing grin spread all over her face.

Alcryst’s face blossomed as red as a tomato, “AH! Citrinne?! No…No! That’s not- I mean...” Alcryst stuttered out his words.

Citrine giggled at her cousin’s reaction, “I can’t blame you, the guy is stunning to look at. An actual dragon deity. I’m personally intrigued by the man myself.”

“C-Citrinne!” Alcryst fumbled, not sure whether to defend or protest against his cousin’s words.

“Oooh, can you just imagine being tenderly held by the Divine Dragon and being lovingly stared at by those beautiful, mixed-matched eyes! Or going to a ball with the Divine One himself, standing side by side in his arms! All eyes on me as the one chosen by a deity himself!” Citrinne cooed at her fantasies.

“You’d definitely stand out if you were a special person to a dragon,” Lapis added with a light blush. Playing out her own fantasies, but she was never going to share them. Ever.

“Nnnnngh! Just the thought of it could make a girl melt! Maybe even a prince, what do you think of the Divine One there, Alcryst?” Citrinne eyed her blushing cousin.

“No! No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.” Alcryst breathed, “NO! I have no interest in being the center of attention at balls; I would look so out of place with the Divine One!”

Citrinne’s eyebrow raised with a smirk, “Oh, so the idea of being side by side with the Divine One did come into mind? I also noticed you didn’t refuse the idea of being held by him either. Oh! Classic fairy tale, a prince falling in love with a dragon!”

Placing his face in his palms to hide an even deeper blush, “That’s not what I meant! Can we please drop the subject and head to Brodia Castle?”

“Aw, don’t worry so much, Alcryst. I’m only teasing.” Citrinne smiled gently.

Alcryst took a breath and dropped his hands, “Teasing or not. You know, once he knows how weak and worthless I am, he probably won’t even want me as an ally. Much less, even a friend or something else.” Alcryst’s tone turned dark and painful.

Citrinne was stunned by the sudden turn Alcryst made. She did not intend it to turn out like this, but somehow her little teasing just got Alcryst to a darker place. Lapis came in to quickly aid, “That is not true, Prince Alcryst! The Divine One appears to be very kind; he has already welcomed us to the Somniel to rest before heading to the castle.”

“Yeah, but it’s only a matter of time. Come on, let us keep going.” Alcryst halted the conversation and began heading back.

“...” Both Citrinne and Lapis looked at each other in silence.

Finally reaching Brodia Castle and meeting Crown Prince Diamount, Alear sees the brotherly love and respect between the two. Noticing that Alcryst is always putting Diamount before himself and never demanding attention or trying to one-up his older brother. Instead, he supports and makes sure there is less of a burden on Diamount and keeps him stable. As the next king, Alear can sympathize with the crushing responsibility that comes with ruling. Then meeting King Morian was a surprise. Even commenting to Alfred that he was expecting a scary, monster of a man, but seeing how the man supported each of his sons and gave his fatherly advice was so sweet to see. Alfred confirmed that he was like that in the battle; here was his family-man side.

Then the fight with Elusia began. First, they had to deal with Crown Princess Ivy; then they heard that this was all a setup for King Morian. They rushed to the king's aid, but unfortunately, it was too late. King Morian was captured, and the look on Alcryst and Diamant’s faces reminded him of how it was with his mother. Alear noticed the frightened tremor in Diamount's voice at the thought of losing his father. Alcryst remained silent, his eyes wide in horror, like he was still trying to process what was happening. The crashing weight of the realization that war is unpredictable, and anything can happen at any moment. Even the unthinkable can happen right in front of you. However, Alear knows they can win, so long as they have the Emblems. They will always win.

After the preparations were completed for the next battle at Destinea Cathedral, Alear found Alcryst sitting alone underneath a tree by the stable at the Somniel. He was curled up like a ball, with his legs tight against his chest and his hands resting on top of his knees. He was just staring at nothing, but Alear could see his mind was probably going into overdrive. His eyes stared off into the abyss, but his hands were holding his clothes so tightly that his knuckles were white. Very slowly and carefully, Alear approached and sat near the prince, gently calling for his attention.

“Alcryst,” Alear whispered, very carefully placing a hand on top of the other’s.

The Brodian prince jumped, startled from his anxious mind. He looked at the Divine Dragon, and Alear’s heart was about to shatter. He appeared to be holding his breath and just on the verge of breaking down from the stress of the situation. Alear attentively loosened one of Alcryst's hands from his clothes and gave a comforting squeeze.

“Alcryst, breathe. Breathe.” Observing Alcryst taking in a stuttering breath, then exhaling.

“Good, again. Slower this time.” Alear kept his eyes fixed on Alcryst's breathing, waiting as it slowed down, and his eyes were coming back into focus.

“Divine One?” Alcryst’s tone was weak and painful. He was trying to hold back tears. Crying would not help the situation; it would only cause more trouble for others—something Alcryst did not want to cause for people around him.

“It’s okay, I came to get you. We’re ready to head out to Destinea Cathedral.” Alear said.

“Good.” Alcryst’s tone suddenly went cold and dark. Getting up fast, solely focused on getting his father back. That sudden change honestly scared Alear. The second prince usually had a level head in a fight, but this involved his father’s life. Was taking him into this battle the right thing to do? What if he does something hasty?

“Hold on, Alcryst,” Alear called out. Alcryst turned to face the Divine One, “Are you alright to be in this fight? I’m concerned for you and Diamant.”

“Please, keep in the lineup for this fight, Divine One. I need to be there for my brother and my father.” Alcryst defended, concerned he was going to be benched for this fight. Useless as he believed he was, he needed to be there until the very end.

“I can understand that, but you seem ready to do something reckless. I want to make sure you and Diamant don’t do something that will endanger yourselves.” Alear reasoned.

Alcryst frowned. He understood where the Divine One was coming from. Trying to be kind because they had no idea what could be waiting for them. King Morian, his father, is likely already dead. However, the slightest hope remains that they will make it on time, and his father will come home safe and sound.

“Divine One, remember what you said to me?” Alear waited in silence, not sure where Alcryst was going with this. “You said that I should stand more and do things my way. Going to Destinea Cathedral and fighting to save my father is something I need to do. I know all too well what the possibilities are and… I want to be there to face them.” Alcryst announced his determination.

Alear’s eyes went wide in amazement, just like when he witnessed Alcryst taming and befriending their wolf friend. His advice was taken to heart, and somehow, a sense of pride came over Alear. His words affected Alcryst, and he stood taller for it, which made Alear proud to call the archer his ally and friend.

“Okay, let’s get going then. We have the Emblems and our allies. I know we can win.” Alear smiled with confidence.

“Thank you, Divine One.” Alcryst sighed in relief. They headed off, meaning with the rest and departing for Destinea Cathedral.

Unfortunately, that sliver of hope was crushed by the reality of what the Divine Army faced in Destinea Cathedral, the horrible and cruel fate of turning a father into a mindless, corrupted monster. Forced to attack his sons, and the sons needing to retaliate. Alear gritted his teeth at the disgusting cruelty of violating the king’s body and forcing family to kill one another.

Diamant was the first hit against his father. “Was I a good son? I guess I should have asked you that sooner.” Diamant whispered. He took up his sword to slice through his father’s chest, but not enough to bring him down. Diamount readied for another strike, but his hands were shaking and his resolve was quickly wavering. He could not do it. He lacked the strength within him to finish it.

However, stepping to the front was Alcryst; he knew this was something that would break Diamant’s heart. He had to protect his wonderful older brother. “Father… if you have to die, let it be by my hand. This would be a terrible burden on Diamant. Thank you for everything. I love you. I always will.”

Alcryst’s arrow pierced the air with the power and resolve that was needed to free his father from this corrupted state. Striking straight into the heart, bringing King Morian to the ground. Final words whispered from the corps hit the Brodian princes, “Raa…argh… Strong of body… Strong of heart.”

Their father’s soul was freed, but it did not hurt any less. Alear observed the Brodian princes, especially Alcryst, as he saw his hands clenched in a tight fist and shaking. That was heartbreaking to watch, but the incredible kindness Alcryst showed touched Alear’s heart. To avoid placing the burden on Diamant, Alcryst took on the responsibility of bringing their father down. Alear wanted to talk with Alcryst, but they were still in the middle of a battle. Their final target was King Hyacinth, but it was all a trap.

Marth warned him, but Alear’s ego got the best of him. He believed that as long as they had the rings, they would win; additionally, Alcryst’s and Diamant’s pleas to stay for their father’s body all came with their fall. The Emblems were stolen, and the group was on the run from Veyle and the Four Hounds through Shadowy Moor, surrounded by the Corrupted soldiers and closely pursued by formidable enemies. If Ivy, Kagetsu, and Zelkov had not switched sides and come to aid them, it was highly possible one or more allies would have been lost that day. They were able to awaken Lucina and Lyn, but the defeat was a hard one. Lessons were learned, and they needed to get back up and keep moving forward.

__________________________________________________________

Easier said than done. After the death of King Morian and losing their collective rings, Alear sits on his bed, his forehead resting on his interlocked hands. He felt like an idiot. The decisions he could have made better, and the actions he could have taken to prevent the whole thing. The recurring image of all the Emblems, his friends, being corrupted. Losing all of them… losing… Marth. Sighing in frustration and regret.

It was currently dusk outside. The sky was coloured in a beautiful mix of oranges, pinks, and purples. It has been a couple of days since the battle in Destinea Cathedral. Everyone needed time to recover physically and mentally. Alear chooses to stop sulking in his room and heads out to check on his friends. Many were just fine, but Diamant was still grieving his father. However, he reassures the Divine Dragon that he will recover and be ready for the next battle. Finally, Alear went looking for the younger prince, but Alcryst was nowhere to be found. Anxiety began to build as Alear searched the entire area of Somniel, with no sign of the archer in sight.

Alear tried to talk to Alcryst earlier after he got defensive with Ivy, but Alcryst stated he was fine and the Divine Dragon should focus on Diamant’s mental condition. Alear did as requested, giving Alcryst time to process everything and conducting regular checks on Diamant. However, now it was time to focus on how Alcryst was doing, whether he agreed with it or not.

Still unable to find Alcryst anywhere around the main building of the Somneil, Alear was close to having a panic attack! When he was having trouble locating the prince, his mind started to go into some dark ideas. What if he went off somewhere alone to grieve and was attacked by the enemy? Maybe the pain of taking your parent’s life caused him to think about taking his own life? He should have focused on Alcryst more because he was the one who ended it with his hand. Alear could not even imagine the pain Alcryst was going through at this moment. He was the one Alear… What was he to Alear? He was the one Alear was getting genuinely attached to.

Shit.. I should never have left him alone this long.

Running down the path towards Lookout Ridge, as if he were the avatar in a video game, he spotted a thin figure looking out in the distance at the cliff. Just standing in silence towards the open clouds of the heavens, Alear was able to let himself breathe in relief. He stopped near the fire pit area to catch his breath. Massaging his forehead in an attempt to relax the stress he just put his mind through, and wiping off any sweat on his face. Taking a deep breath to calm himself, he called out for the prince and walked towards him.

“There you are, Alcryst. I was looking for you.” Alear came beside the prince. He was never going to mention his mental freak-out or how hard he was running all over the place.

“Good evening, Divine One.” Alcryst nodded. Not saying anything else to engage in a conversation.

Alear observed that Alcryst was just staring blankly out into the horizon; his hands were not tight, and his eyes looked emotionless. He was still processing everything, and he probably had not talked to anyone, having to shoulder it all by himself. Although Alear knew Citrinne, Lapis, and Diamount checked on him, but Alcryst probably did not share his troubles with them. Not wanting to be a burden to them with his grief.

“I wanted to check on you.” Alear carefully looked over the archer's body for any injuries that still needed to be tended.

“Don’t concern yourself with me, Divine One. Just focus on Diamant. I’m fine.” Alcryst’s tone was dry and flat. Alear knew that was the answer he would get. It was probably the same for his retainers. This time, Alear was not having it.

“No,” Alear replied a bit too sharply—shocking Alcryst out of his trance.

“Huh?” Alcryst questioned.

“No, I will not just focus on Diamant. I did what you asked, I checked on him regularly. He is in pain and is grieving, but now I want to focus on you.” Alear clarified.

“I’m fine, Divine One. Please don’t waste your time on me. It’s not worth it… I’m not worth it.” Alcryst wrapped himself with his one arm, curling in discomfort.

Yes, should have expected this

Sometimes Alear wondered if Alcryst was simply putting himself down due to a lack of self-esteem or if he was being stubbornly humble. Probably both, but either way, he knew just pressing him would not change anything. If he kept asking, Alcryst would keep shutting him down, so Alear needed him to open himself willingly. Changing his approach differently, and he area they were in was perfect for that. Everyone else was currently in the Cafe Terrace for dinner. It is Boucheron on cooking duties today, so people should be enjoying a well-cooked meal. They are presently alone right by the fire pit.

“Alright, if that’s the case,” Alear tried to be casual. “Then, since you’re free, and the weather is cooling down. Join me by the fire.” Alear gently grabbed Alcryst’s hand and guided him towards the fire pit.

“Huh?! B-But shouldn't you be getting dinner or doing something with someone else?” Alcryst assumed Alear was just being his usual generous self. Checking on all his allies after every battle, making time for each person to get to know them better. Alcryst was nothing special; the Divine Dragon would enjoy his time better with someone else, like his brother. Diamant was probably suffering more than he was.

“No, I don’t feel like eating right now, and enjoying a nice fire with you sounds like a delightful idea.” Alear smiles at Alcryst while he starts a fire with the fire starters they have set aside.

“Oh, okay…” Alcryst sat down in a seat by the fire, watching the Divine One start a fire like a regular human person. Honestly, it crossed Alcryst’s mind that he had never seen Alear’s dragon form.

“That’s because I don’t know how to transform or if I can.” Alear answers with a smile.

“Oh, no, no. I’m sorry, Divine One! Did I voice my thoughts?” Alcryst covered his face in embarrassment.

“Hahaha, well, yeah, obviously you did, but it’s fine.” Alear got up after the fire was burning intensely and sat beside Alcryst.

They sat in silence for a moment, letting the hypnotising flames calm their souls, then Alear began to talk again, “You know, after waking up from a 1000-year sleep, I don’t remember anything from before falling asleep. So I can’t remember how to turn into a dragon. My mother could, so I assume I can, but I never got the chance to ask her. Truth is, I didn’t even recognize Queen Lumera as my mother.” Alear confessed

Alcryst was shocked to hear that, “Really? You don’t remember anything?” Alcryst asked.

“No, everything is still hazy. When I try to remember anything, nothing comes to me. When I woke up, it was as if I were meeting my mother for the first time. That probably made me the worst son in history. She watched over me all that time, and I couldn’t recognize her at all.” Alear looked down at the flames with a sad smile.

Alcryst stayed silent; he had no idea how to respond to that or the words that could provide some comfort. He watched as Alear took another breath to continue.

“Just before Lythos Castle was attacked, she mentioned she wanted to give me a birthday gift, one that she had waited for 1000 years to give to me once I woke up. She died protecting me before she had the chance.”  Alear’s voice cracked at remembering the day.

“I’m sorry for your loss, Divine One. I only met Queen Lumera a couple of times when I was a child. My father took me and Diamant to Lythos Castle to meet with your mother. She was so gentle and kind to us.” Alcryst smiled, recalling the meetings with the beautiful woman. “She took us to see you once.”

“Oh? I know Alfred and Celine mentioned they came to visit me many times, but not so much the people of Brodia.” Alear commented with curiosity.

“The people of Firene are devout followers of the Divine Dragon, so I’m not surprised they go often. Brodia tends to be all about strength and power.” Alcryst muttered in slight annoyance.

“True, so tell me how your experience was on visiting me?” Alear peered back at Alcryst.

Thinking back, even as a child, Alcryst found the Divine Dragon Alear a radiant and beautiful being to look upon. Seeing him in his sleeping form for the first time was something he remembered very clearly from his childhood, because his father teased him afterwards about how big his eyes got in wonder, and how he gave his father problems when it was time to leave, he wanted to stay longer. Both Queen Lumera and his father laughed at his excitement and enthusiasm. His father commented on how this was a rare occurrence in his youngest, how Alcryst was always soft-spoken and never argued with him or his mother.

There is another vivid memory of Queen Lumera saying something else to him, but it was hazy. He can not remember the rest, unfortunately. He chuckled at the memory, and he bit his lip to keep from crying when remembering his father’s laughter.

“I would say you were the same you are now,” Alcryst was careful not to mention the beautiful or radiant part. “Sleeping soundly and difficult to wake up.”

Alear raised an eyebrow and smiled, happy that Alcryst felt more at ease joking with him, “Oh, dare you.” Both were chuckling at the light jabbing.

Both settled in a comfortable silence, simply enjoying the warm comfort of the fire and each other’s company. As Alear continued to look at the flame, his one dream that had kept haunting him came to mind.

Alear gripped the ground, “There is something that has been repeating in my dreams since I woke up, I haven’t told anyone. Not even Vander…” Alear looked off the side.

Not ever the Divine Dragon’s knight, Alcryst was curious, but he did not want to overstep. “Ah- are you sure you want to tell me then?”

“I want to tell you. I feel right telling you about it. We are on equal footing, and I trust you, Alcryst.” Alear gave the most radiant and kindest smile Alcryst has ever seen.

“You keep saying that, but are we really on equal footing?” Alcryst questioned.

“I’d like to believe we are. I trust you to share my more profound thoughts. One day, I hope you feel comfortable enough with me. No pressure. And I can’t count how many times you had my back in battles.” Alear stated with confidence.

“I know you have helped me out multiple times. Both in battle and outside.” Alcryst agreed.

“I’m glad I could do something to help. You’ve protected me, and I’ve protected you. Ultimately, we protect one another. I’d say we are on equal footing, right?” Alear reasoned, giving the prince a warm smile.

“Right… Thank you for trusting me with this.” Alcryst blushed and gave a thin, shy smile back. Alcryst did not smile often, so little moments like this were a win in Alear’s books.

“In this dream, I see myself, only with both eyes, and my hair is entirely red.  Dressed in black, I’m surrounded by flames with bodies all around me, and I’m covered in their blood. The ‘me’ always looks back at me with a sinister grin of pure evil before I wake up in a panic. That dream honestly scares me more than the Corrupted does.” Alear confesses, poking at the fire.

Alcryst is in shock; that dream sounds horrible. He can never imagine Alear looking evil. The man was the kindest person Alcryst has ever met. Also, the Divine Dragon was afraid of something; he could sympathize with a bad dream, but Alcryst had no idea the Divine One was scared of the Corrupted.

“I didn’t know you were scared of the Corrupted. We fight them so often, but you are always at the front fighting with such fearless strength.” Alcryst turned his body towards Alear, “And this dream, you could never be evil, Divine One. You are way too kind for that.”

Alear turned towards Alcryst with a smile, “Thank you. I tell myself it’s just a dream, but something about it makes me feel anxious. As for dealing with the Corrupted, I had to overcome the fear of them. So I could lead our army and ensure we didn’t lose any more allies. I’ve already failed my mother’s wishes once, losing the Emblems we collected, and my actions almost got everyone killed. I don’t ever want that to happen again.”

Alcryst nodded his head in sympathy, “A-are you still afraid, Divine One?”

“I’m afraid every time we go into battle, Alcryst,” Alear confessed, feeling so relieved to get that off his chest finally. Vander always stated that he was the leader of their army and that he had to stand firm, showing no weakness or fear. Alear smiles at having Alcryst here to share his worries, knowing he can trust him with his true feelings.

Alear continues, “I am terrified that my decisions will get you or anyone else killed, like how my choices probably got your father killed. I don’t want to lose you or any of our friends, like we did Marth and the other Emblems.”

“No, you were not the one who got my father killed! It was Veyle, the Hounds, and Sombron! We all rush to get there as fast as possible! We were just…” Alcryst clenched his fists. “We were too late.” Alcryst choked back tears.

Hearing about all of Alear’s fears and concerns reminded Alcryst of just how much of a regular person the Divine Dragon Alear was. He has just as many weaknesses and doubts as everyone else, including his brother, Diamant.  Alcryst just recently learn that his mighty and perfect brother feared facing off against mages. He always imagined his brother was not afraid of anything. That he was perfect in every way, he believed the same towards the Divine Dragon. However, they all faced fears and issues every day. It warmed his heart that the Divine One was open to him about all he had learned about him tonight.

“Divine One, can I confide in you about something?” Alcryst's body began to shake; he could no longer hold back the tears.

“Of course you can.” Alear took hold of Alcryst’s hand in comfort, hoping it would encourage Alcryst to continue.

“I’m scared about losing my brother and being left all alone. I didn’t think my powerful father could be killed, but it happened! He’s gone and I’ll never see him again!” Tears poured from Alcryst’s eyes.

“I know it had to be done… My father was corrupted and needed to be set free, but I still feel like my father’s blood is all over my hands. I chose to end it myself to protect Diamant, but after the battle ended, it felt like I murdered my father! Part of me knows it’s not Ivy’s fault, but I want to scream at her for what her father did! I didn’t want you… Or my brother to find out how I felt because I thought I looked pathetic!” Alcryst cried harder as he let everything out over the last couple of days.

Alear wrapped his arms around Alcryst’s body and gently tugged him in closer. Tucking the prince’s face into his shoulder.

“I will never consider you pathetic. I have seen what an incredible and kindhearted person you are. I hope you see that for yourself one day. I’ve had my moments of being pathetic too. At the Cethidrial, I could do nothing but beg and plead for them to stop. I felt powerless to do anything. You are not alone in this.” Alear stroked his back and held his head in tenderness.

Alcryst began to pull away, believing that it was inappropriate for him to cry on Divine One’s shoulder, but Alear halted his movement with a light squeeze.

“No, it’s okay. I want you to be here. Don’t worry about anything and just let everything out.” Alear whispered comfort in Alcryst’s ear, stroking his hair.

Alcryst chose to let everything go; he held onto Alear’s shirt as if it were his only lifeline. His tears ran down his face like a river soaking the Divine One’s shoulder and staining his face. All his regret, grief, and even some of his frustration toward himself and the people around him came pouring out in waves. It was likely that this was the hardest Alcryst had ever cried before. Usually, he keeps everything to himself and does not let Diamant, Citrinne, or Lapis know his inner struggles. Alear stays quiet the whole time, not letting Alcryst go for even a second, allowing the prince to cry out everything he needed to get out. Checking ever so often to make sure no one was coming close. He wanted this moment just between him and Alcryst, nobody else. That sense of protectiveness came over him, making sure to hold him close and not letting go.

Time passed, and Alcryst’s cries began to slow down. It could have been hours or seconds later, Alear did not care. He still held the prince in a comforting tightness until the cries came to a stop, and Alcryst’s arms went limp. Checking to make sure Alcryst was alright, Alear gently turned Alcryst over to lay his head down onto his lap. The poor prince fell asleep from exhaustion. All of that crying and releasing the tension from his body finally allowed his body to finally relax.

He probably hasn’t slept since the day they raided the cathedral.

With Alcryst lying on Alear’s lap, the Divine Dragon was able to notice the prince’s facial features better. The young man had dark circles under his eyes, likely due to a lack of sleep from anxiety keeping him up late at night. Although he looked at peace right now, his usually tense eyebrows were relaxed. His long eyelashes still had tears peeking out from them, and Alear gently wiped away any remaining tears. Peeking down at the prince’s lips, they were thin and a lovely shade of pink. Alear had noticed it before, when stroking his head in comfort, but now, with a better touch, Alcryst had the silkiest hair he had ever felt on his fingers. His hair was a beautiful midnight blue, and with the silver of the moonlight, it had an enchanting effect.

With the notice of moonlight, Alear broke himself out of his trance and noted that it was already dark out. Very carefully, without disturbing Alcryst, he put out the fire and picked up the prince, carrying him back to his room and making a mental note to avoid anybody close by. Knowing Alcryst would be embarrassed to be seen being held like a princess by the Divine One. Alear giggled at the likely reactions of the prince if he knew, but continued to his room. When he arrived, he got to admire just how easy it was to carry him here and how nicely he fit in his arms.

So cute.

He took care to lay Alcryst down tenderly and was respectful, removing only his shoes, jacket, and any other clothing that would be uncomfortable to sleep in. Once Alcryst appeared satisfied on his bed, Alear cleaned the tear stains from his face and lightly stroked his bangs out of his face. Letting his eyes roam the prince’s sleeping face again, Alear allowed his hand to drift down from Alcryst’s hair, to stroke his cheeks, across his jaw softly, and finally glide to poke his index finger at Alcryst’s lips.

What would it be like to hear my name from these lips?

Alear uncoussiously brought the finger, which was just touching Alcryst’s lip, up to his and gave it a lick.

What would they taste and feel like? I really want to kiss him.

No!

Alear shook out his thoughts. There was no consent on whether Alcryst would be alright with that or not. However, Alear had to admit that he absolutely enjoyed those moments by the fire with Alcryst. He was able to discuss and share things he had not been able to do with anyone else in the army, and he knew without a shred of doubt Alcryst would keep it to himself. His feelings for the prince were developing strongly. Alear wanted to treat Alcryst with care and show him just how wonderful he truly was. Was this considered love? Whatever this feeling is, it’s warm and pleasant—definitely, not a family warmth, but something much deeper and primal.

I want to cherish you.

Sitting beside Alcryst on his bed, Alear gave some more gentle, loving strokes to his bangs before bending down to kiss the young prince on his forehead.

“Sleep and dream well, Alcryst.” Alear smiled in satisfaction.

Alear left Alcryst’s room quietly with a skip in his steps. Something about these newfound feelings filled Alear with a sense of glee that had him smiling from ear to ear. He wanted to have another talk with Alcryst again later, as he had been able to get so much off his chest. After tonight, Alear just felt so much lighter with the heaviness off his shoulders. He made his way back to his bedroom to get the rest he also needed.

Chapter Text

As the morning rose from the horizon, Alcryst slowly began to wake from his sleep. Blinking his vision back to normal, looking up at his bedroom's ceiling at the Somniell.  He lightly stretched out his body, feeling the stiffness in his limbs crack, and enjoying the soft comfort of the bed. He rolled over on his side, cuddled up with his pillow, not wanting to get up just yet. That was the best sleep he has ever had in such a long time. Most of his nights were spent with his mind wandering from his anxious thoughts or his nightmare of the night of the cathedral. Letting his mind drift back into the comforts of sleep, allowing the warmth of the blankets and the coziness of the pillow, let his mind be at peace.

Time passed, and it was getting close to the time for him to get up and ready for the next battle. As he began to push himself out of his covers, he realized his clothes from yesterday were still on. The blouse and pants were wrinkly from his movements last night. He does not remember ever falling asleep in his clothes before, even last night. More importantly, he does not even remember heading back to his room last night; he remembers sitting with the Divine Dragon and talking with him. Then he began crying, which was embarrassing enough. However, it was so sweet for the Divine One to be there for him, but how did he get back to his room?

Did he walk back without realizing it? No, even if he were so tired, he would be aware of walking back to his room, stripping off his clothes, and changing into his nightclothes. He was still almost fully clothed in the same ones he had worn the day before.

So that means… He fell asleep at the fire, and the Divine One must have carried him back! There was no way the Divine Dragon would have just left him there; he was not the kind to do that.

He sat back on the bed as the realization sank in. The Divine Dragon Alear carried him back last night, after he had cried in his arms. ‘Just imagine being tenderly held by the Divine Dragon.’ Citrinne’s voice echoed in his mind.  Alcryst could feel his face getting hot, just imagining the different ways the Divine One could have carried him, and if people had seen them last night! Then his mind wandered back to last night at the fire, feeling his one arm wrap securely around his back and the other gently stroking his head. The feeling of the larger hands and his touch through his hair and down his back. The comfort of being secured and stable against his chest, while crying his heart out without any judgment or pressure to stop. No, he was encouraged to let everything out, and he was safe there.

‘It’s okay. I want you to be here. Don’t worry about anything and just let everything out .’ The Divine One’s radiant and kind voice whispered in his ears, tickling his skin with each word. Alcryst touched his earlobe; the Divine One’s lips were so close to his skin, and he could recall the feeling of his lips brushing his skin as he talked and the heat that came from his lips, chest, and hands. What would it feel like to have the Divine One’s hands roam and explore his body? Those lips kiss at Alcryst’s ears, down his neck, or maybe even his lips.

‘AHHHHHHH! No! Stop! Don’t think vulgar thoughts about the Divine Dragon!!’

Alcrsyt slammed his face into his pillow, “Nnnggghh!” Alcryst silenced his embarrassing and frustrated screams.

He needs to apologize to the Divine One for causing him trouble last night! Although he knew the Divine Dragon, he would just say it was okay and not to worry about it. The man was just too kind and… beautiful. Alcryst breathed out to calm his heated face. He admitted that he wants to be a person special to the Divine One, but he is not worthy of the dragon. Many others are better than he is. Perhaps he can speak more with the Divine Dragon and seek help from the others to gain more confidence. Not a bad idea.

Alcryst got himself up and changed. Taking a deep breath, he was ready to face the day and change himself.

Unfortunately, there was no time to talk afterwards. Everyone was able to recover slightly, but they needed to move quickly. The race to recover the remaining Emblems was on. Alear and Alcryst were able to give each other support to get back up and move forward in collecting the remaining rings in their battles together, but it was not the same as sitting down to talk to each other. They headed to the Queendom of Solm, where they met with the Solm Prince Fogado, and his retainers, Brunte and Pandreo—followed by a bandit raid in meeting up with Crown Princess Timerra, and her retainers, Merrin and Panette, and gaining the Emblem Ike, as they continue their journey to defeat Sombron. However, things do not stop there. Word reaches them that Princess Hortensia has attacked Solm Palace and taken the queen hostage. Thankfully, they were able to resolve the situation with Hortensia and the Hounds; the queen was safe, they had gained the Emblem Byleth, and the Elysian sisters were reunited.

Things were starting to look up once they retrieved Emblem Corrin and met with Seadall at the Northern Fortress. They also gained another addition by joining Goldmary and Rosado, and brought the Emblem Eirika with them. However, war is cruel and unpredictable, and even the best intentions can be overshadowed by wicked acts. They received information that the Hounds were heading to Friene. Without delay, they headed there immediately. Only to find they arrived a little too late, as Florra Port was on fire. Chaos all around, people screaming and crying out for their families and loved ones. As homes were burning in a blaze of fire. There, they learned the truth about Veyle, how there were two versions of her because of Zephia’s spell. Many of them questioned whether it was true or not, but she did seem like a completely different person. Although it was just another trick?

The fight against Evil Veyle and the Hounds in Florra Port was fierce; they had to protect and save the villagers while fighting off powerful enemies. Furthermore, Evil Veyle brought back King Hyacinth just to torture Princess Ivy. At the end of the battle at Florra Port, everyone was exhausted. It was one fight after the other, and the end did not seem anywhere in sight. They were able to get Emblem Leif back, but it was not until the true Veyle fought back and gave them additional rings that things finally started turning in their favour. There was light at the end of the tunnel. She was able to provide them with Emblem Sigurd, and he was back in their hands. The Hounds were heading back to Elusia, with the Divine Army at an advantage in rings. They could take the fight to them this time.

The day they were heading back to Elusia by boat, Alear made sure to check with Ivy. Making sure she would be prepared to face her people if needed. Something Alear prayed it did not come to that. However, Ivy showed resolve and kept moving forward. When this war is over, the woman has the resolve to rebuild her country and the lives of her people. Alear admired the princess's determination to fight against Sombron. Alear, however, felt his fighting spirit wavering, and he headed back to Elusia, the kingdom where he had lost the Emblems and hit his lowest point. All these fights were necessary, but they were beginning to take their toll.

After he met with the crowned princesses and princes in their meeting, he headed off to an area of the ship to take a moment for himself. Leaning against the gunwale of their ship. He was able to get advice from Sigurd, but the doubt and fear remained in his mind. Were they ready to go back to Elusia? Have they… No, had he really recovered from his last failure?

He was so distracted in his thoughts that he did not notice someone approaching him. “Ummm, Divine One, are you alright?” Alcryst called out.

Alear slightly flinched while turning his attention towards the one who called out to him. “Oh, hey, Alcryst, sorry. I was just momentarily distracted. Did you need something?”

He honestly did not want to talk to anyone right now, but he put on his best leadership persona on display. He wanted to be alone, with everything he felt towards Veyle and Elusia, his head was just swarming with thoughts and feelings that he could not describe with words. Everything was going so fast.

“I-...No, I don’t have anything that needs attending right now… It’s just…” Alcryst bowed his head, unsure where to take this conversation.

Alear did not have the patience right now. “Then, if there is nothing that needs to be dealt with currently, just let Vander handle things until we reach Elusia. For now, I’ll just be here coming up with possible strategies.” Alear’s tone was dismissive with a hint of annoyance, and he turned away to urge his friend to leave nonverbally.

Alcryst has a moment of shock widen in his eyes, he knows that something is bothering the Divine Dragon. The way he has been acting since Solm shows it all, but that attitude he just gave Alcryst broke his heart. Did he seriously just dismiss him? Cuing him to leave?  He thought they had grown closer after the night by the fire; was he mistaken, or was he just being a nuisance to the Divine Dragon? Guess Alcryst should have known this would happen eventually and should have been prepared for it. It always happens.

With the feeling that his heart had just been stomped on and crushed. Alcryst turned away to leave, but he halted his steps. No, he would regret leaving later! Plus, something about that attitude really angered Alcryst. He was not going to take that anymore! Gripping his teeth and taking a breath of courage, “I apologize if I am overstepping with you, Divine One, but I really need to address your current attitude.” Alcryst retaliates against Alear. Turning back around to face the dragon.

Alear signed in frustration, “What attitude are you referring to? I’m fine, Alcryst.”

“Maybe the one you just showed me, or when we were at the Northern Fortress, where we ran into Veyle. You became incredibly dark afterwards. It was worrying. Even Princess Timerra was startled by your grim tone.” Alcryst expressed concern.

Alear refused to look back at Alcryst, well aware that the prince was just worried for him, but he really did not feel like talking right now. “Well, of course, she was the one who stole the rings and killed my mother,” Alear argued.

“Yes, but when we learned at Florra Port that she may be a victim herself. That she apparently has “two versions,” you've been distracted and distant with all of us. The way you just passively aggressively hinted at me to leave just now was unpleasant! That usually is not like you!” Alcryst continued to argue.

Alear growled in frustration. He snapped his head back, ready to order Alcryst to leave. However, the heartbroken look in Alcryst’s eyes halted everything.

Alear turned back around and sighed in defeat. Rubbing his hands over his face, he was being a jerk, and Alcryst did not deserve any of this. “I'm sorry… You're right. The truth is…” Alear signed in irritation at himself.

Alcryst walked up to stand beside Alear, waiting patiently for him to continue. “I'm confused,” Alear confessed.

“About what?” Alcryst questioned.

“I should be furious with Veyle. I was at the beginning, but then I learned that she's being used. I couldn't help but want to help her. Then I questioned myself, why do I have this compulsion to protect her? To know she was doing alright and safe. After everything she has done to us, there should be no doubt that she's the enemy, and we can't trust her. But I can't help but want to see her.”

Alcryst had a hint of envy for the girl. The Divine Dragon had a desire to see someone. “If that's the case, why are you being so distant?” Alcryst asked.

“Because Diamant brought up a good point. He wondered if this was just another scheme to get them to trust her, only to stab them in the back. If he’s right, I'm the biggest fool for walking into another trap and putting everyone in danger again. I didn't want to bring it up with anyone because I know deep down that it's going to be a terrible idea.” Alear looked at Alcryst as he continued, “Honestly, I wasn't sure if you'd like me going after her either.”

“You were concerned about how I would react? Why?” Alcryst tilted his head

“Because I don't want you to hate me.” Alear and Alcryst both blushed at the confession.

“It was her plan that got King Morian and King Hyacinth killed. My selfish need to make sure she's alright, even with what she did to you… to us. And again, I don't know why her well-being is so important to me… I'm just confused and tired." Alear signed, placing his face down into his hands in exhaustion.

Alcryst stayed quiet for a second, then took a breath. “If she's telling the truth, and is being controlled. Then she is not at fault for any of this. It wasn't her choice, but if she is lying to us, then that will be her last chance at redemption. Let’s find out together.”

“You're okay with going with me on this?” Alear faced Alcryst in surprise.

“I trust you. You want to find Veyle and check on her to verify her real intentions. I'll have your back on it.” Alcryst smiles.

“Alcryst… really?” Alear's eyes brighten with hope.

“It's important to you, so I'll do what I can. I can't speak for everyone, but I'll at least talk to Diamant." Alcryst nods, grateful to see the Divine Dragon's worries melt away. Seeing him looking tired and defeated pained Alcryst more than anything he had experienced before.

“That's more than I can ask for. Thank you, Alcryst.” Alear breathes out in relief.

“Of course. I'll leave you alone now. I’m sorry that I may have crossed a line with you, Divine One." Alcryst bows and begins to walk away, understanding the Divine One wants time for himself.

“No, you didn’t! I’m grateful you’re trusting me on this, and I’m so lucky to have someone like you on my side.” Alear smiled

Alear unconsciously began to reach for Alcryst. Wishing him to stay longer, but stopping mid-reach. He acted like a jerk before, and now he regretted his actions and felt guilty. However, he was so relieved and happy that Alcryst was alright with his wish to seek Veyle.

“You’re just being kind, Divine One.” Alcryst peeks back as he continues to leave.

Alear sighed in slight heartbreak. That was the response he always got when he tried to express his affection for the prince. Perhaps one day, Alcryst will realize it is not just about him being kind, but about wanting to cherish Alcryst and show how precious he is to the Dinve Dragon. It is likely that Alcryst simply cannot believe the Divine One likes him because of his lack of self-esteem, but Alear would keep trying. Letting him know he was happy to see him when it was his turn for wake-up duty, and enjoying the food he made on cooking duty. Little things to help move things along.

Acryst only took a couple of steps before he came to a stop. ‘I don't want you to hate me.’ Echoed in his mind.

“Excuse me, Divine One, I'd like to clear up one thing.” Alcryst turned back to face Alear.

“Huh?” Alear responded.

“It's true, until we know for sure that Veyle isn't going to betray us again, I'll be very aware of her actions. But no matter how things go, I have faith that with you, everything will work out. I don't think I could ever hate you, Divine One.” Alcryst announced with confidence.

Alcryst’s tone suddenly turned from confident to a shy whisper, “Actually, I…” his voice trailed off into silence.

Badump

“Oh- I-I'm glad to hear that…” Alear smiled with a gleam of hope, “And- you actually what?”

“No, t-that’s all! Please excuse me.” Alcryst bowed once again, turned around, and ran off.

Again, he can run so fast.

Alear turned back towards the sea, leaning back against the rail with the biggest, goofiest smile all over his face. The prince could be just so cute, but more importantly, Alcryst trusts him and agrees to support him. He rubs his cheeks in a failing attempt to calm down, but he feels so warm knowing Alcryst had his back.

Yes, it was clear to Alear now that he was falling hard for Prince Alcryst.

Alcryst headed down to the ship's deckhouse. Making sure nobody else was around, out of sight of anyone. He leaned against the wall, breathing out, and placed his hand over his heart. What came over him there? Just the fact that the Divine One was worried that he would actually hate him. No way! The Divine Dragon was just too incredible a person. He was the most caring and kindest person; he was stunning. There was no way he would even hate him. Honestly, Alcryst was in love with the Divine Dragon.

No! The Divine One obviously would never feel the same towards him. He was a worthless worm… he was not worthy. Besides, the Divine One seemed to be interested in Veyle. Despite his jealousy and anger towards the girl, it was essential to the Divine One, so he would do anything to help the Divine Dragon. If it made him happy in the end, that was all Alcryst could ask for. Alcryst decided to continue working on something for himself, and he needed to let things go for now.

__________________________________________________________

Returning to Elusia and fighting through Givre Port against Marni and Mauvier, they were able to reunite with Roy and Micaia at the end of the fight. Putting them at an even greater advantage towards their success in war; however, their next destination was Elusia Castle. Alear knew that going in there could change everything for better or for worse. Veyle and Sombron were in there; they were taking the fight to them this time. Unfortunately, they found Griss instead.

Dealing with him was relatively straightforward, as there were no other Hound members to contend with, making it simple to defeat Griss with everyone's help. Additionally, regaining Emblem Celica after defeating Griss was another victory for them. The victory was cut short; Griss began laughing hysterically after Alear summoned Celica. Revealing Alear was actually a Fell Dragon, and not a Divine Dragon, as everyone was led to believe. Once dropping the discovery, Griss retreated to leave the Divine Army to process the news. His main goal was to cause mistrust and chaos within their ranks.

Alear did not want to cause a panic and divide them; he was prepared to leave if his friends stated it. Blessed that his allies believed in him, but they were able to confirm that what Griss said was true thanks to Sir Sigurd. However, it was also clear that Alear summoned the Emblems not as a Fell Dragon, but as a Divine Dragon, and that he was both. Born as a Fell Dragon, but through Lumera’s love, he gained Divine Dragon magic. Alear allowed the Emblems to keep their free will, and with that, the Emblems were willing to fight alongside him.

Although the truth of his origin was revealed, his allies continued to trust him; therefore, he chose to remain with them throughout this war. However, there was a part of him that raised questions about how everyone was so easily able to accept it all. Even he was uneasy about the fact that Sombron was his father. Lumera was still his mother in his mind, but not by birth. So, who was his birth mother? She likely died from the war 1000 years ago, but was there a way to know who she was?

They all agreed to head back to the Somniel, needing to rest and regroup. Later, they learned that Sombron and Veyle were heading to Lythos; therefore, strategies and preparations were made. Alear was awake, sitting alone in his room by the window and looking out into the plaza. After his usual wake-up, he asked to be left alone for a while; he just needed some time to think. Everything he learned about Sombron, Veyle, and himself was a shock. So he let himself observe his friends below. Watching his friends go about their morning routines and talking to one another, Alear took note that many members were forging strong bonds with one another. Some of them were forming deeper or more intimate relationships. Exchanges or possible marriages that will benefit Elyos, or the creation of new families, may occur when the war finally comes to an end.

The thought made Alear smile; amidst all this chaos and war, the light of the end of the war would bring new beginnings and life, as well as the creation and rebuilding of relationships, to a bright future for Elyos. The future they were fighting to create for everyone. However, that smile quickly changed when he noticed Alcryst walking around the plaza with Celine. He notices that Alcryst was also forming strong bonds with many other occupants at the Somniel during their journey, which is a good thing; however, some of them are becoming rather suggestive. Furthermore, Alear could not help but notice how cute a couple they would make. Yes, Alcryst was also really close to Lapis as well, and it was apparent the girl had a crush on her lord, but here Celine and Alcryst were both royalty and second-borns, so that it would benefit both their countries in forming better relations with each other.

Something squeezed at Alear's chest painfully. He should be happy if Alcryst found someone special in this horrible war to look forward to spending his life with, right? That is what they all want, a peace where people can be satisfied and live life to the fullest. To find the love and happiness they all deserve, but Alear wants it to be with him by Alcryst’s side.

Additionally, Fogado and Pandreo joined in on Celine’s and Alcryst’s walk around. Alear could not make out what they were saying from his distance, but he could easily hear Pandreo’s party howl.  However, it was an absolute shock that Alcryst replied with his own party howl, just as loud as Pandreo’s. The priest responded by hugging the prince, then leading Alcryst into a twirl, which Alcryst easily complied with, doing it with ease like he had done with Pandreo before—many times.

Hang on, hang on here! Those two efficiently responded to each other, as if they had danced together before. When? At Pandreo ’s parties? Since when did Alcryst like parties?

Fogado cut in between the two, positioning himself behind Alcryst, grabbing both sides of his waist, and tucking his chin on Alcryst’s shoulder. His action surprised Alcryst, who blushed at suddenly being grabbed from behind, but instantly relaxed and laughed alongside Fogado. Something else was said, then Fogado turned his face towards Alcryst and gave a kiss on his cheek! Alear saw enough.

That’s it!

Alear leaves his room in a dash, heading down the stairs to the cafe area. Vander sees his master leaving his room and intends to update him on their current progress on their battle plans. “Divine One, excellent timing. I need to inform you that-” Vender begins.

“Not now, Vander! I’m sorry, but not right now.” Alear dashes past his knight and heads to the plaza.

He heads into the plaza and sees the group still standing where he saw them from the balcony. He could see Alcryst yelling in embarrassment at Fogado's sudden actions. Fogado was still holding onto Alcryst’s waist as he laughed at Alcryst's blushing face.

“Why did you do that?!” Alcryst yelled in confusion.

“Aw, come on, Prince Alcryst, why are you suddenly being shy? You certainly weren’t shy last night.” Fogado teased in a flirtatious hum.

Alear heard that last part, and his heart felt like it was being shattered. What happened last night? What was going on here? Alear walked up to the group, doing his best to calm himself and acting as normal as possible. He should not jump to conclusions, but he really wants to rip those hands off Alcryst’s waist.

“Oh?! Divine One!” Celine, being the first one to notice him approaching, smiled in his direction. The rest looked at him and smiled as he came up to their group.

“Yo, how are you feeling, my friend? Sleep well?” Fogado asked, still keeping a tight hold on Alcryst’s waist.

Take off your hands! Now!

Alear wanted to scream, but he took a deep breath and answered, “I’m fine. I just wanted to check on everyone, and… I’m kind of wondering what’s happening here.” Alear forced his usual smile.

“We are all doing fine, everyone is recovering nicely, but someone is acting a little too familiar.” Celine turned towards Fogado. “Prince Fogado, it is obvious to all of us that Prince Alcryst is feeling uncomfortable. I would advise you to let him go.” Celine narrowed her eyes.

Yes, thank you, Celine.

“What’s this, Princess Celine? Are you jealous? It's just a little innocent kiss on the cheek.” Fogado smirked. “Like I said, our Brodian prince here wasn’t shy last night.”

“Please, don’t make it sound like I did something…” Alcryst blushed while peeking at the Divine Dragon, “Weird.”

“Okay, okay, I was just teasing. Honestly, Prince Alcryst, you should give yourself more credit. You were turning heads last night with your dance moves.” Fogado retracted his hands away.

Dance moves? “I feel like I’m missing something here.” Alear wanted details now.

“Oh, sorry about that, Divine One. We were just talking about my party last night. Prince Alcryst finally enjoyed his first party. He let himself have fun and be free last night. I was excited for him, seeing the guy finally let loose.” Pandreo explained.

Celine giggled, “It honestly surprised me as well. I did not think I would ever hear about Prince Alcryst going to a party. Let alone enjoying them.”

“I just wanted to get out of my comfort zone. It was really thanks to you, Pandreo. Thank you for inviting me and having the patience to keep encouraging me to go.” Alcryst smiled at the priest while rubbing the back og his neck.

“I’m just glad you finally had fun. A time to celebrate, have a great time, and forget all about your troubles. That’s the reason I throw those parties. It took a few tries, but you finally let yourself go, my friend.” Pandero placed his hand on Alcryst’s shoulder.

Oh, that is what happened. Alear is still astounded; Alcryst is attending multiple parties and liking them! Amazing! Alcryst is expanding himself and trying out different things. He was incredibly proud of the prince. Alcryst was having fun and laughing with friends, but Alear still had a ping of jealousy pinging in his chest.

“And I was just commenting that his dance move made him the center of attention. Seriously, the guy wasn’t even trying, but I got a lot of people asking about you last night!” Fogado wrapped his arm around Alcryst’s shoulders, smirking towards the prince. “Honestly, you should save a dance for me at the next party. Pandreo here got a dance, lucky guy. I want to have the next one.”

Wait-What?!

“No way! First, I highly doubt I caught anyone’s eye; I am not even a good dancer. I probably looked foolish last night, but I did let my body go with the music. And secondly, you didn’t need to kiss me just now! Again, why did you do that?” Alcryst pointed to his cheek with a blush.

“Hahaha! But you did look good last night! Trust me, you caught many people’s eyes. You looked dazzling while having fun, and just now you were being so cute. I couldn’t resist.  It’s just an innocent kiss on the cheeks. I didn’t go for the lips. This time.” Fogado teased with a wink and a flirtatious tone.

“W-WHAT-?!” Alcryst stuttered.

“Prince Fogado…” Both Celine and Pandreo signed in frustration.

That is it! Alear can no longer hear this; he just can not! His heart is about to shatter and sink into his gut!

“Alcryst,” Alear called, his voice perhaps too stern, as it cut through the playful atmosphere. “Can I borrow you for a moment? I need your assistance with something.” Alear did not have any idea what that ‘something’ was right now, but he just wanted to take Alcryst away with him—learning that others had discovered how cute Alcryst was made his blood boil.

“Oh, umm, of course, Divine One.” Alcryst looked confused, but nodded as he followed the Divine Dragon away from the others.

The rest stared in silence as the two left in a rush. Once Alcryst and the Divine One were out of earshot, Fogado broke the silence. “Uuhhh, was it just me, or was the Divine Dragon staring daggers at me?”

“Oh, Prince Fogado, I find that was just plain tasteless of you. You are well aware, right?” Celine shook her head, and Pandreo rubbed his temple.

“Oh, I'm well aware. Pretty sure everyone knows. Besides those two, of course.  Maybe a few oblivious ones in the army here and there.” Prince Fogado laughed.

“Then why would you play around like that? Not very cool of you.” Pandreo crossed his arms around his chest, demanding answers from his prince.

“Look, man, sometimes people need a push, and this constant mutual pining gets old. The only people who like it are fangirls writing their fanfic. I like Prince Alcryst. I want him to be happy. However, if a certain someone doesn’t do something soon, then I have the right to swoop in myself.” Fogado confessed.

Pandreo and Celine's eyes went wide in shock.

“Fair enough, though, I do wonder how Prince Alcryst would react to multiple marriage proposals if the Divine Dragon doesn't step up. I am including myself, of course.” Celine glared at Prince Fogado.

“Hahaha, bring it, little princess. I won't lose in the war of love.” Fogado glared back.

Pandreo stepped back, seeing the electric glares going between the two royals. “Oh boy, better hurry up there, Divine One, these guys are just plain scary!”

“What? Are you not putting yourself in the mix, Pandreo?” Celine questioned. Pandreo just smiled; he knew why Alcryst was pushing himself to attend parties and stepping out of his comfort zone. The prince just needed to take that final leap of faith.

“As a man of the cloth, I can’t reveal anything that has been confessed to me, but I will say this. You can’t change what the heart wants. It’s what Prince Alcryst wants in the end.” Pandreo smiled warmly.

The two halted their bickering, “Can’t argue with that.” Fogado smiled, and Celine nodded in agreement and admiration.

__________________________________________________________

Alear was leading Alcryst away, but suddenly came to a stop. Where he was going or what he was doing was utterly unknown to him! He just wanted to get Alcryst alone and away, but now he was looking like a completely possessive weirdo! Running out of his room, in a mad dash, past everyone, just to pull Alcryst away from friends.

Oh, Mother, how much of a fool can I get?!

He began sweating, trying to think of anything he had on his plate that could have been a reasonable excuse for him to drag Alcryst away, but every daily duty was covered today. Vander was just too good at making sure everything got done for his liege.

Damn it, Vander! Why are you so amazing as my knight and steward!?

“Divine One, are you alright?” Alcryst's voice filled with concern, the Divine Dragon looked ready to drop to the floor.

Alear sighed in embarrassment at how silly and immature he was acting. Guess Alcryst just had that effect on him. “I'm sorry, Alcryst. I took you away from enjoying yourself for my own selfishness. I'm not okay, honestly.” Alear laughed in exhaustion.

“You’re the last person here that I would ever consider selfish. Is there something I can do?” Alcryst smiles. The Divine Dragon was always so considerate of others. It was a relief to see him actually doing something for himself.

Alear smiled, “I just wanted to talk with you, but it's gotten so busy here around the Somniel. We’re lucky to have so many allies, but there really isn't a place to be alone anymore.”

Alcryst was honoured that the Divine Dragon wanted to speak to him personally. Even for a moment, it made him feel a sense of specialness. “I have an idea where we can go, but it’s always from the Somniel.”

“That’s fine. I’ll take any suggestions at this point.” Alear nodded, letting Alcryst take the lead on their destination.

Alcryst took Alear to the teleportation systems. Making sure to grab some beef jerky from the kitchen before they left. Alear took a moment to leave a note for Vander, just in case the knight worried while they were gone. They worpped back to the kingdom of Brodia, just a few miles away from the castle. Alear instantly knew the area; this is where they came to play with their wolf friend. Yes, this is what he needed. They have not been here for a while, given everything that's been happening.

Alcryst whistled for their wolf to come. They waited for a bit before hearing a howl from a distance. The wolf came running in excitement, greeting them with a wagging, happy tail. Alcryst got down on his knees, petting the wolf and giving him the jerky they brought for him.

Alear joined them in the wolf cuddles and licks, which greatly helped lift his current mood. They played for a bit before the wolf settled with them on the grass under a tree. The wolf lay between Alcryst and Alear, with its head up against Alcryst’s lap.  Alear felt like he was regaining his mental stability. Sitting there in the shade with the wind blowing through the trees gave a sense of clarity and peace, and the smell of the grass and plants around them was refreshing—there was no longer the smell of burning buildings or people.

“Did that help a little bit?” Alcryst glanced at the Divine One while petting the wolf.

“It really did. Thank you.” Alear sighed, leaning his body against the trunk of the tree.

Alcryst smiled, happy to be of some help to the Divine Dragon. “Do you want to talk?”

Alear was quiet for a moment, so Alcryst did not press any further. Perhaps he was not ready to talk, so there is no need to put pressure on him. Alear was unsure where to begin with his words. He was content with just sitting there quietly, but he also had stuff to get off his chest.

“Is everyone really alright with me still being here?” Alear suddenly spoke, catching Alcryst off guard; however, that question worried him.

“Huh? Wait, why would you think that?” Alcryst is feeling unsettled.

“We found out that I'm actually born a Fell Dragon, not a Divine Dragon, and I’m Sombron's son. I'm having trouble coming to terms with that. But everyone else seemed alright with it, as if it had just been said and then swept under the rug. Done. I just can't understand why everyone is alright with it all.” Alear said in a flat tone, staring off into the woods.

“Ahh… I think I understand. You were saying before that you were prepared to leave if everyone couldn’t trust you anymore. But everyone agreed that your birth didn’t matter; it’s who you are today. We all know you are a good person and an excellent leader. Sir Sigurd confirmed that your power is Divine and not Fell.” Alcryst stated proudly.

“I know, believe me. I am incredibly grateful to everyone for placing their trust in me… but.” Alear's voice faded. Alcryst waits patiently in silence.

“That dream was actually a memory. During the last war, I likely killed many innocents… or my dragon siblings under my father’s command before joining with my mother.” Alear breathed out heavily, looking down at his hands. He may not have memories of it all, but there was no mistake; he had the blood of innocents on them.

Alcryst bit at his lower lip, trying to come up with the words to say to the Divine One. Before, when the Divine Dragon told him about his nightmare, there was no question in Alcryst’s mind that it was just a dream, but now it was proven to be true. Nothing Alcryst could say would make Alear feel any better. Saying things like: ‘That was thousands of years ago, ‘ or ‘You are not that person anymore.’ None of those would help; however, Alcryst understood the feeling Alear was going through about the guilt.

Taking the Divine Dragon’s hand, “I guess we both know the feeling of having ‘family’ blood on our hands.” Alcryst squeezes Alear’s hand in comfort.

Alear does not respond; he just squeezes the hand back. This was fine; he did not need hallowed words of comfort, but having a warm and trusting presence to share his pain with was what was needed right now.

“I guess my compulsion to protect Veyle makes sense now. She’s my little sister. Even without memories, I had the brotherly instinct to make sure she was safe. Yet, she’s not. Right now, she's still with Sombron and under his control.” Alear glanced at Alcryst.

Alcryst nodded, “We’ll get her back and somehow figure out a way to release her from Sombron. I’m sure the two of you have a lot to talk about.”

“Yeah, thank you. After hearing her story from Mauvier, I want to be there for her from now on.” Alear squeezed their joint hands again. He was determined to get Veyle back; this time, he would not fail his little sister.

They sat they for a moment until Alcryst spoke up. “Divine One, I can’t say what happened 1000 years ago, but today I will always have faith in you. If you ended up leaving, I would have still followed you. So long as you would have me.”

Alear turned his body towards Alcryst in surprise. His heart was beating fast at that declaration from Alcryst. He would choose to be with him, even if everyone else turned their back? The prince had changed since he met him at the border of the Brodia. He says sorry less, and he is making declarations with more confidence. “Even if it was against Diamant’s wishes? If he were one of the members of the army that couldn’t accept me as a Fell Dragon, you’d still follow me if he didn’t.”

Alcryst nodded with a shy smile, “I want to keep my brother safe. I promised my father that, but I don’t want to be in his shadow anymore either. I want to be my own person.”

Alear smiled at how impressed he was at Alcryst, “Good for you. I meant to comment on this earlier, but hearing you went to Pandero’s parties was a shock. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed yourself, but I didn’t think it was your scene.”

Alcryst laughed and blushed as he explained, “Believe me, it wasn’t. The number of people and the music weren’t anything I was used to. I kept going to help with my confidence, and Pandero was so kind about helping me through it all.”

“Right,  Pandreo’s parties are definitely something to experience. I haven’t had the chance to go yet, but that whole thing with Prince Fogado…” Alear glance for any reaction from Alcryst.

“Ahhh… yeah, haha, I’m sorry about that. I’m not sure why he was acting that way in the plaza. I’m sure he was just teasing.” Alcryst blushed. He touched the area of his cheek that Fogado kissed. Then, he moved to playing with his hair in embarrassment.

A tight ping of jealousy hit Alear’s heart. Not the reaction he was hoping for; he wanted Alcryst to dislike the attention Fogado gave. However, it looks like he actually liked it. For now, Alear moved on to a different topic. “Is going to parties a way to help in gaining more confidence in yourself?” Alear asked.

Alcryst nodded, “It’s one part, I’ve actually been training with Bouchron to gain some strength. Hortensia has been giving me pointers on attitude and confidence, and I’ve been training more with Sephir and Diamant. I actually beat him in archery the other day. Can’t with swords or axes, but I don’t mind that so much. I’ve also made peace with Princess Ivy. She and I actually have a lot in common, and we’re now really good friends.”

“That's incredible, Alcryst. What brought on this desire to change within yourself?” Alear is in awe. The growth in Prince Alcryst since the beginning of their journey is inspiring.

Alcryst blushes hard and plays with his jacket in an attempt to calm his nerves, “Because of you, Divine One. Your advice has still encouraged me to do things my own way. It worked with our wolf friend here. So I decided to expand it with the rest of our friends. If you say you’ve already seen a change. Then I can only be grateful to you, Divine One.”

Alear was touched that his words still echoed in Alcryst’s heart and had such a positive effect on the prince. This was probably the greatest comment he could have gotten. Alear desired to hold Alcryst right now. To run his hand across his face, down his face, and kiss his lips with tenderness. He began to reach, but halted when Alcryst started talking again.

“My goal is to no longer feel like a shadow to my brother, to be a strong and reliable ally to you, Divine One. Someone you can rely on in and outside of battle. More importantly, I want to have the courage to give something to someone, a token.” Alcryst smiles down at the ground, still petting the wolf.

The last part had Alear hesitate, a token. A token of what? Part of him wanted to know more, but he was afraid to ask. Was this a token of friendship, loyalty, or… love? If love, then to whom would be the one to receive it? Lapis? Celine? Fogado? Maybe.. Himself. Oh, what a joy that would make Alear, but the fear kept him from going any further.

Alcryst's words hit Alear's heart fast and hard like one of his mighty one-shot arrows. He realized why he was feeling sick and heavy when Alcryst was getting close to others. He was jealous. He was in love with Alcryst, and he wanted his heart to be all his own. Unfortunately, he was too afraid to take that step.

“Thank you for telling me this, Alcryst. Yes, I know I can rely on you both on the battlefield, but I can also come to you like this and talk with you. I hope this can continue after the war is finished.” Alear smiles at the prince, happy to see the cheerfulness bloom in Alcryst’s eyes.

“Truly, Divine One? Yes, I would be honoured if you continued to rely on me!” Alcryst smiled. He was proud of himself for being there for the Divine Dragon on a personal level.

“Yes, and thank you for helping me cheer up here today. We should head back soon. Vander is probably getting worried by now, and I don’t want to cause him too much trouble,” Alear began to get up and brush the dirt from his clothes. Alcryst nodded and got up with the Divine Dragon.

‘Even if I am not the one who will receive this token from Alcryst, I wish to stay close to him, watch over him, and ensure his happiness.’

They said their goodbyes to their wolf friend. Then they began to make their way back to the teleportation area to return to the Somniel. The path was a clear, winding route through some of Brodia’s hills and rocky terrain. Alcryst abruptly stops and looks in the direction of Brodia Castle. His home, he has not been there since he brought the Divine One with him to meet his father and older brother.

Alear looks back and sees the castle in the distance, “Alcryst, are you okay?”

Alcryst does not turn to face Alear; he continues to look at his home, “I’m sorry, Divine One. I just realized how long it’s been since I’ve been back here. I miss it.” Alcryst turned back to the Divine Dragon, wiping some tears that had slipped by, “I’m okay, though. I know we’ll win, and my brother will become a good king.”

Alear was relieved to see Alcryst was okay, “Yeah, we will win this war.” Alear stated with confidence. “After the war, would you-?” Alear began to ask as they walked towards the teleporter again. The tears made Alcryst’s eyes blurry, and he was not watching his footing on the rocky terrain correctly. He lost his footing on the edge of one of the rocky hills. It happens fast, and Alcryst falls towards the rocky ground!

“ALCRYST!” Alear reached and grabbed hold of Alcryst’s hand, but now they both went down together.

Thankfully, it is not too high. There are no significant injuries or anything broken. Just enough to cause light bruising and to knock the air from their lungs. A good scare for both of them. Alcryst landed on his side, and Alear landed on top of Alcryst’s legs.

Slowly, they both sat up, but still sitting on the ground. Alcryst got his barrens before realizing he fell off the cliff with the Divine Dragon in tow with him. “Ow- OH! O-oh, no, Divine One, are you alright?! Are you hurt anywhere?!”

“O-ow… That’s what I should be saying to you,” Alear gave himself a quick check. Nothing was damaged, just a bit painful. “Looks like I’m fine.”

“B-but if something happens to you then… Then I-I!” Alcryst panicked until Alear gently placed his one hand onto Alcryst’s face.

“I’m fine, no major injuries. Promise. Now, are you hurt at all?” Alear smiled down at Alcryst before looking over Alcryst’s body for any bleeding.

“Just some pain in my side from the fall, but that’s it,” Alcryst confirms.

“Good, both of us can have Jean look at us, just in case…” Alear was starting to get up, but then he realized their position. Alcryst was holding up his upper body, leaning against his arms, and Alear was on his knees, hovering over Alcryst.

With Alear’s hand against Alcryst’s cheek, the Divine Dragon could not help but admire how beautifully the prince fit underneath him. The primal urge of desire made his eyes go hazy and his body heat up. He wanted to make the Brodian prince his own, forgetting the noble thought of hoping for his happiness with another and watching from the side. He could claim the prince as his right now. Not letting Prince Fogado, Princess Celine, Pandreo, or Lapis take what he wants. Prince Alcryst should be his!

“I’m s-sorry, D-.” Alcryst began to apologize, but froze as the Divine Dragon’s face suddenly got closer. Halting just an inch away from his own.

Alcryst’s body and time itself were frozen in place, his body as solid as stone, his eyes wide from the shock. Those enchanting, mixed-matched blue and red eyes stared deep into his own. Divine lips just an inch away from his own, he or the Divine Dragon just needed to move a bit closer for them to be fully connected. Alcryst had no idea what to do. Was this really happening? Did the Divine One want to kiss him? HIM?! Or was this a misunderstanding based on the situation they were in? What is happening?!

Alcryst felt the Divine One breathe out; his hot breath brushed against his lips, causing him to shiver from the sensation. Concentrating further into the Divine Dragon’s eyes, Alcryst took notice that Alear’s eyes were directly focused on him with a hungry desire, but also filled with a devoted affection all pointed towards him.

Making Alcryst’s heart jump for joy and nerves, the comfort of lying under the dragon brought a warm sense of safety; he wanted it. “D-Divine One,” Alcryst calls out with a shiver.

The Divine Dragon moves closer, causing Alcryst to twitch in response with a short gasp of breath, then his body began to shiver unconsciously. He honestly was welcome to this, but his nerves were getting the best of him.

Sensing Alcryst’s discomfort, the Divine Dragon pulled away and got up from where he was on top of Alcryst.

No! Alcryst wants to pull him back, but his body does not respond.

“Are you okay to walk?” Alear held out his hand for Alcryst to take.

“Y-yeah, I’m good.” Alcryst's voice cracked. Taking the Divine One’s extended hand and allowing the Divine Dragon to pull him to his feet.

“Good, let’s head back.” Alear’s voice was soft with a sad smile, his bangs hiding his eyes. He felt like his actions were inappropriate and caused harm to his relationship with Alcryst.

However, Alcryst felt that he had let a critical moment slip away. He feels regret for not having the courage to voice his feelings. As the Divine Dragon began turning back, he was caught by Alcryst, who refused to let go of his hand that he extended. So many things he wanted to say and to ask, but his voice was tight in his throat. All he could do was keep hold of that gracious hand.

“Alcryst?” Alear called out to him, but Alcryst stood still

Alcryst, refusing to let go, gave a glimmer of hope back to Alear’s eyes. Signalling to him that he had done nothing wrong, Alcryst was not against his sudden actions or attitude, and that reassured Alear to follow through with his next action.  Building up some courage, Alear squeezed the hand Alcryst was holding onto and leaned in to kiss Alcryst on his cheek. Purposely kissing the exact spot where Prince Fogado did.

Just a quick peck on his cheek, nothing lusty or extravagant. However, it made Alcryst’s whole body melt in a tender loving warmth. His heart was beating wildly and intensely, and his face heated up like fire. His reaction was definitely nothing like when Prince Fogado kissed him. That was just like getting kissed by a friend, but this was so much stronger.

Alear pulled away, and Alcryst noticed that the Divine Dragon’s face was just as red as his fiery hair or eye. “Alcryst, next time Pandreo has a party, let me know. I want your first dance next time instead of someone else.” Alear leaned to whisper in Alcryst’s ear.

“O-okay.” Alcryst shivered in glee.

Alcryst bit down on his lower lip, trying to contain the grin spreading over his face. The Divine Dragon had a cute side! His blushing face was too cute! Remembering the conversation at the plaza, the Divine One’s actions afterwards. The prince thought it was all to do with the stress of the war, but was it Alear being possessive? No way! Really?! If that is true, this is so cute! Alcryst learned something new about the Divine One!

They made their way back up from where they were and headed towards the teleporter—all the while, keeping their hands tightly held. Refusing to let go of their hands until they reached the Somniel grounds, and not uttering another word on the way back. Once appearing in the plaza, they were hesitant to let go of their hands. They said their goodnights and headed off to their rooms, both of them walking as if on autopilot.

Once Alear closed his door to his bedroom, he was alone, with no one to see his beet-red face. Letting out a gasp of breath as he felt his legs turn to jelly, he walked towards his bed. Just as he reached the foot of his bed, he let his knees sink to the floor, while his arms and head rested on his mattress. His heart was pounding hard in his chest, ready to burst out at any moment.

‘Ah-! Oh God! I’m going to die! I’m going to be killed by these feelings, aren’t I?!’ Alear mentally screamed.

Alear hid his face with his arms, shaking out his thoughts and attempting to cool his intense heartbreak. Today was the push he needed; he was going to confess his feelings to Alcryst after the war was over and they had won. This was the right choice; he could wait until then. He was not sure if his feelings would be reciprocated, but the regret of not saying anything would be worse.

Remembering back when Alcryst called out for him, Alear knew that if Alcryst had called his name instead of his title, there would have been no stopping him from claiming those lips for himself right there. However, he resisted, feeling like he was forcing the prince and not considering Alcryst’s feelings.

“I want to hear you say my name,” Alear moaned to himself.

Alcryst ran into his room and quickly closed it. He did not want to run into Diamant, Lapis, or Citrinne right now. Leaning against his door and covering his face with his hands, he slid down to sit on the ground. His cheeks began to hurt from the constant smile on his face. His insecurity held him back from believing he was worthy of being anything more than a worm. However, after meeting the Divine Dragon Alear, he wanted to change.

He got up from the ground after he was ready, walking to his side table beside his bed, and picked up a small container. He made sure to bring this with him from Brodia Castle when they left after it was attacked.

Opening the container to find the gem his father had given him, a stone that was given to him on the day of his birth. A beautifully unique gemstone of blue and red. Something that matches the Divine One perfectly. Picking up the gem and holding it tight to his heart, he was going to do it. Perhaps he will face rejection, but he has worked towards this goal.

Throughout this horrible war, he had been training and growing as a person. All so that he could become a better person and convey his feelings for the Divine One. His words of encouragement and kindness really changed him for the better, and he was ready to express his affections for the Divine Dragon. All of it to have the confidence to stand tall so he could give the Divine One this gemstone, a token of his feelings. His love for him.

“Alear,” Alcryst whispered in the gem like a prayer.
