Wakanda Forever

Summary:

What started off as a simple trip to the Twilight Town movie theater turns upside-down when Sora gets a phone call about his Wakandan King friend. A tribute to Chadwick Boseman.

Notes:

It's been 5 years since we lost the Black Panther himself.

This is how the characters in my Kingdom Hearts universe reacted.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Twilight Town:

Various people were exiting the movie theater after seeing a summer blockbuster.

The 20 Guardians of Light had joined Hayner, Pence, and Olette to see it.

"Wow! I can't believe Dr. Bloodmark was Larry's dead brother David!" said Sora.

"Guess that's what happens when you hypnotize your hostage and keep them on a leash for three years." said Riku.

"I am so glad they reunited and put Professor Demoness behind bars." smiled Kairi.

"I felt like Ty Simpkins was the best role for Larry, he's really coming up there these days." said Ven.

"At first I thought it was odd for Ethan Slater to be David, but then he surprised me with his sinister role as Bloodmark." added Xion.

"I gotta give credit to whoever chose Laurie Metcalf to be Demoness, she pulled off the sinister, mad, wicked scientist role." said Lea.

"Some of those words are almost similar." Isa pointed out.

"And yet that's how I saw it." Lea replied.

"Thanks again for inviting us, you three." Mickey said to the Twilight Trio.

"Hey, it's our pleasure." Olette smiled.

"Yeah, it's always fun hanging with you guys." Pence added.

"And who says a Keyblade War is the only time we can hang?" Hayner joked.

The 23 friends chuckled.

"Oh, I missed these get-togethers." Minnie smiled.

"Yeah, all of us hanging out like one big happy family." said Naminé.

"And what better on such a lovely day like today?" said Aqua. "Or at least a day like this for Twilight Town."

Sora's Gummiphone rang. "Oh hey, gotta take this." he said, answering it as he walked a few feet away so he could hear. "Hello?"

"This is what get-togethers are all about, after all." Mickey beamed. "Making cherished memories together with family and friends."

"I'm glad you're all my friends." Xion smiled.

"Yeah, I'm glad I stuck with you after being Demyx twice." Myde said in agreement.

"And we will always cherish the memories we have with each other." Oswald said. "You never know when you might not get them again."

Everyone voiced their agreements. They were suddenly got off by Sora dropping his Gummiphone in shock.

"Sora? Are you okay?" asked Max.

"Ya dropped your phone, kid." Lea said.

Sora slowly picked his Gummiphone up. "W-When did it happen?" he asked, suddenly shaking.

None of his friends could hear, but it was clear something was wrong.

"Okay... I'll let them know... thanks for telling me and... I'm so sorry..."

Sora hung up.

Those words made his friends concerned.

"Sora? What's going on?" asked Terra.

"Who was that on the Gummiphone?" Daisy asked.

"And why did you say you were sorry? Did something bad happen?" asked Ortensia.

Sora suddenly faced his friends, his face in shock.

"That was Shuri." he managed to say.

"The Princess of Wakanda?" asked Naminé.

"What was she calling you about?" asked Kairi, confused.

Sora was silent, as if still processing what he just heard.

"It's T'Challa... he's dead." he revealed.

Sora's friends gasped in shock and horror.

"WHAT?!" they all cried.

"He's dead?!" quacked Donald.

"Dead?!" cried Goofy.

"The King of Wakanda's dead?!" exclaimed Ven.

"Wakanda's king is dead?!" cried Oswald.

"How did that happen?!" exclaimed Xion.

"Was it in battle or a failed mission?" Roxas asked.

Sora shook his head. "Shuri said he was sick. He had... he had an illness... they had no idea he had it until it got worse..." he revealed. "Shuri tried to save him with a new heart herb but... she was too late..."

Everyone was devastated.

"T'Challa's dead..." Riku whispered.

"I can't believe it..." Kairi said in horror.

"My fellow king..." Mickey whispered in tears.

"He looked so young and healthy!" Minnie cried.

"Shuri and Queen Ramonda must be devastated..." Ortensia said sadly.

"They really couldn't remake the heart of the Black Panther?" Olette asked.

"It's been hard after Killmonger had them all burned so no one else could take the mantle after he thought he killed his cousin in the tournament." Isa sighed. "I guess the last unharmed heart wasn't enough to keep him safe."

"You can survive lots of battles... but it takes a lot more effort to beat certain illnesses." Terra said glumly.

Sora sat on a bench glumly. "I can't believe he's gone... he was such a good friend." he sighed.

"And this is the second time he died." Ven said sadly. "He died in the Snap thanks to that purple monster before Hulk brought us back..."

Riku, Kairi, Mickey, Minnie, Daisy, Goofy, Terra, Lea, Isa, Hayner, Pence, and Myde shuddered, remembering their deaths in that catastrophic moment all too well.

"This is one death we can't reverse..." Isa muttered.

"W-What about the Infinity Stones?" asked Goofy.

"They're too dangerous, Goofy." said Aqua. "They were used four times within the span of 5 months. After Sora killed 2014 Thanos and his forces, Strange told us that repeated use could cause any other type of universal destruction."

Sora sighed. "I can't believe he's gone..."

"Neither can we..." Kairi sighed, rubbing her boyfriend's back.

"But he's never truly gone." said Oswald.

"He will always be with us in our hearts..." said Naminé, putting her hand to her heart.

"I know..." Sora said glumly. "Doesn't mean I won't miss him... T'Challa was a good friend."

"Then the least we can do is be there for his family and kingdom and pay our respects." Mickey said.

"Mickey's right. Did Shuri say when the funeral was gonna be?" Max asked.

"In a few days." Sora said. "And I think we should let those of us close to him know."

"We definitely should." nodded Kairi. "They should get a chance to pay their last respects too."

"We'll call them up right away." said Aqua.

Wakanda:

The day of King T'Challa's funeral had arrived. Many had gathered in the Gummiship as Mickey sailed it close to the ground.

Soon the mouse king landed the ship. One by one, everyone departed the ship.

Sora, Riku, Goofy, Max, Oswald, Terra, Ven, Roxas, Lea, Isa, Myde, Hayner, Pence, Dilan, Aeleus, Leon, Zack, Seifer, Rai, Vivi, and President Rufus Shinra wore black suits, pants, and shoes with different ties, red for Sora and Lea, light red for Max, yellow for Riku and Cid, green for Terra, grey for Roxas, olive green for Ven, blue for Oswald, sky blue for Isa, black and red checkered for Hayner, purple for Pence, indigo for Dilan, maroon for Aeleus, dark blue for Zack, blue and grey striped for Seifer, orange for Rai, black for Goofy, Leon and Vivi, silver for Rufus, and the rest went tieless.

Kairi, Naminé, Aqua, Xion, Daisy, Ortensia, Olette, Fuu, Tifa, Yuffie, and Aerith wore black church dresses and heels.

Mickey wore his Birth By Sleep clothes.

Donald wore a black tux, a white undershirt, his old black bow tie, and his white sailor hat.

Minnie wore a blackened version of her Country of the Musketeers dress with the same cape.

Rude, Reno, Tseng, and Elena wore their regular SHINRA suits.

Even, Ienzo, and Ansem the Wise wore their regular clothes, but their lab coats were replaced by black suit jackets, Ansem retaining his red scarf.

Cloud, Genesis, Angeal, and Vincent wore their regular clothes.

Chirithy just wore their purse and cape.

And finally, Yen Sid wore a blackened version of his wizard robe and hat.

"Here we are. Wakanda." sighed Mickey.

"Last time we were here it was for one of our social visits." said Even.

"This is the first time for some of us." said Rai.

"If only it were for better circumstances..." sighed Fuu.

"And this is the country where Thanos killed Vision and then half of all life in the universe..." Reno mused.

"Dude, really?" Elena asked, unamused.

"Now's not the time, this country just lost their king." scolded Rude.

"Right, right, sorry, sorry." Reno quickly said.

"This land does feel a lot sadder..." Aerith said softly.

"Like Rude said, T'Challa's death affected all of us, not just his people." said Ienzo.

"Even if that applies to some of us more than the rest." said Cloud.

"Thanks for coming to support us, Chirithy." said Ven.

"Of course." Chirithy said. "I'm happy to join you, Ventus."

"Can I ask something? How come the rest didn't come?" asked Vivi. "Like the rest of Donald and Daisy's family?"

"Or Oswald and Ortensia's kids?" asked Seifer.

"Or our friends from Scala ad Caelum?" added Zack.

"They weren't as close to T'Challa, Shuri, and the people of Wakanda as we were." said Mickey.

"And we all fought with them and the other Avengers in the battle against Thanos and his forces, both from the present and time-traveled from 2014." added Dilan.

"And I left Merlin in charge of Radiant Garden until we return." Ansem said.

"But they do all send their sympathy and support." said Donald.

"Master Yen Sid, are you sure there's no way you can bring T'Challa back?" asked Dilan.

"He has a point, combining the magic between you Merlin, Donald, Aqua, Lena, and any other mages should do the trick." said Angeal.

Yen Sid shook his head solemnly. "I'm afraid there are some spells even I can't do. Even with the help of other mages." he said.

"And his spirit has most likely moved onto the Ancestral Plains like his father King T'Chaka and Zuri before him. So it would be just as difficult to do so." added Genesis.

"You think Killmonger and N'Jobu are there too?" asked Lea. "Y'know, reincarnated as panthers and all that?"

"N'Jobu's debatable since he was a good father, but he did betray Wakanda." said Isa.

"I bet Killmonger's burning in Hell." smirked Ven.

"If any of us manage to even access the plains or Hell, I guess we'll see." said Tseng.

"Come on, fellas. Let's find the service." Mickey said.

And they all walked towards the palace.

The Dora Milaje stood on guard, though it was clear it was hard for them to maintain serious looks. T'Challa's death had shaken them.

Sora and Co. approached them.

"It's them." said Ayo. "The Keybearers and their friends."

"We must alert the royal family at once!" said Aneka.

"No need. We saw them."

The Dora Milaje stood to the side as Okoye marched through. She was leading Shuri and Ramonda through towards the group. It was clear to the group that they had been in

"Greetings, Okoye." said Terra.

"Your majesty. Princess Shuri." Mickey greeted.

"King Mickey. Queen Minnie. Everyone. We are so thankful you have come." said Ramonda.

"We were more than willing to attend." said Mickey.

"T'Challa was a friend to all of us." said Riku.

"He was a true king." said Oswald.

"How have you guys been holding up?" Kairi asked gently.

"I will be honest with you... not very well." Shuri admitted, sniffling. "First my father was killed by Zemo... and then I thought my brother died in ritual combat with Killmonger... and then both my brother and I died for 5 months when Thanos snapped his fingers... and now he died of an illness that I couldn't cure..."

"I have lost my husband and son for good..." Ramonda strained.

"We miss King T'Challa greatly." said Okoye, trying to remain strong... but it was clear she was struggling to do so.

"We are so sorry for your loss." Vincent said.

"T'Challa was our friend, just like all of you." said Goofy.

"It was fun fighting alongside that king against that purple bastard and his cronies." said Seifer.

"He really brought the mantle of Black Panther to life." said Tseng.

"And what he tried to do with Wakanda, I mean changing the traditions a little and opening it up to his version of Earth... very impressive." said Cloud.

"I know what it's like changing the status quo up every now and then." said Rufus. "That's why I'm nothing like my father, the previous President Shinra."

"Which we are all thankful for." said Tifa.

"Our point is, we all loved T'Challa like you did." said Donald.

"Even if many of us here didn't know him as well, we were happy to fight alongside him and the rest of you to save the universe." said Isa.

"And we are honored that you invited us to attend his funeral." said Aqua.

"We want to celebrate his life like you all in Wakanda wish to." said Aerith.

"And give him a proper farewell." Yen Sid concluded.

Shuri, Ramonda, Okoye, Ayo, Aneka, and the Dora Milaje had sad smiles on their faces.

"We appreciate you all doing so." said Shuri.

"Follow us." said Ramonda. "The ceremony will start soon."

"Did the other Avengers show up?" asked Vivi. "We know T'Challa was close with a few of them."

"Yeah, he let Bucky stay here so Shuri could cure him of his HYDRA brainwashing." nodded Elena.

"And he fought with them against Thanos and his forces." added Rude.

"Yes, we invited them this time." nodded Ramonda. "They all deserve a chance to say goodbye and pay their last respects to my son..."

"Where do you wish to have us?" Ansem asked.

"Follow Okoye, Ayo, and Aneka." said Shuri.

"Yes, my princess." Okoye said.

And the three members of the Dora Milaje escorted the Guardians of Light into the palace.

Inside the palace stood Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Thor, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton, James Rhodes, Peter Parker, Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, Wanda Maximoff, Vision, Stephen Strange, Wong, Carol Danvers, Scott Lang, Hope van Dyne, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Everett Ross, Hank Pym, Janet van Dyne, Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Groot, Mantis, and Nebula stood chatting before they spotted them.

"Hey guys." Sora waved.

The Avengers, Guardians, and their friends all walked over to them.

"Hey, you all made it." Tony smiled.

"It's good to see you all again." said Steve.

"Same with you." smiled Riku.

"Though we wish it was under different circumstances." said Isa.

"Ain't that the truth." snorted Rocket.

"How are you guys holding up?" asked Natasha.

"We've... been better." admitted Mickey.

"Some of us more than the rest." said Cid. "Even if many of us didn't know him well, we did consider him a good ally."

"Understandable, we all fought against two versions of Thanos with him." nodded Bruce.

"And seven of you helped him take down Killmonger." said Rhodey.

"How about you guys?" asked Lea.

"Well... it was pretty shocking when we heard about it on the news." admitted Clint.

"We only learned when they called us." said Gamora.

"Those badass space satellites do come in handy." said Quill.

"We haven't been to a funeral since Yondu's..." Drax said glumly.

"And I haven't been to one since Maria Rambeau's..." Carol sighed.

"And we were happy to attend this funeral so we could give a proper farewell to Wakanda's king." said Thor.

"We all are, Thor." said Oswald.

"How are you holding up, Bucky?" asked Max.

Bucky sighed. "I owed a lot to T'Challa and, well, basically the whole kingdom of Wakanda for helping free me of my brainwashing, giving me a new lease on life." he said. "And they gave me a home to start off fresh before Thanos showed up... and now... and now T'Challa's gone for good."

"Is there really no way to bring him back?" asked Reno.

"Not even the Time Stone could reverse such a deadly illness..." Strange said solemnly.

"And no spell is strong enough either." said Wong. "That's why we could never bring back the Ancient One."

"We understand." said Xion.

"Say, if you guys are here, who's out... Avenging?" asked Donald.

"There's no big stuff going on right now." said Thor. "Even if there were, allies like Daredevil, Punisher, etc. are handling it."

"And if shit hits the ceiling, Yelena, Alexei, John, Ava, Melina, Antiona, Shang-Chi, and the others are on standby." said Sam.

"That's good." nodded Kairi.

"What matters right now, is giving T'Challa a proper farewell." said Fury.

And everyone agreed.

At that moment, Okoye entered the room.

"It is time." she said. "Are you all ready?"

Everyone nodded.

"Where uh... where do you want us?" asked Everett.

"We will spread you out." Okoye said. "In groups. Scattered across the town."

"As the royal family wishes." said Minnie.

"Shall we?" asked Hope.

And they all followed the leader of the Dora Milaje.

The funeral was now underway. All of Wakanda had dressed up in white for the occasion.

A tarp was pulled away, revealing T'Challa's casket, the symbol of the Black Panther on top of it.

Okoye and the Dora Milaje, who were acting as pallbearers, lifted it up and carried it away.

Ramonda and Shuri stood together as the latter held the mask of the Black Panther, solemn looks on their faces.

As the casket was escorted, the townsfolk of Wakanda did a traditional dance in the streets as some sang a song for the service.

The Guardians of Light, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and their allies were scattered across amongst the townsfolk, watching on sadly as T'Challa's casket was carried before them.

Okoye was struggling not to cry.

Ramonda slowly walked on, gazing at a painting of T'Challa near some drummers. She could only look on mourningly as she held Shuri's hand.

Shuri had her hood over her face as she carried the mask. She looked around at the ceremony around her, her expression sad and almost unreadable.

Sora, Bucky, Riku, Everett, Kairi, Roxas, Mickey, Donald, and Goofy were the saddest of all, having known T'Challa longer than the rest outside of Wakanda. And the king himself, their friend, who helped them as they helped him... was gone.

They soon stopped as the casket was set down, Shuri laying the mask on the ground in front of it.

Three Wakandan airships flew ahead. The one in the center hovered over the casket.

Shuri and Ramonda put their hands on the casket carrying their late relative. Ramonda was solemn while Shuri was sniffling. The queen guided her daughter away.

Suddenly, a sniffling Shuri broke free and rushed to the casket, leaning over and hugging it as she began to cry.

Ramonda felt for her child, but knew it was time to send T'Challa on his final journey. She gently guided the crying Shuri away.

The airship beamed up the casket. The Wakandans crossed their arms.

The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Guardians of Light respectfully did the same.

The casket was brought into the ship as it flew away, everyone uncrossing their arms.

Later everyone was talking in the palace.

"So who is gonna be king now?" quizzed Nebula.

"Shuri's T'challa's younger sister, right?" said Mantis. "She would be next to rule."

"I... I don't think I'm ready..." Shuri said sadly.

"Which is why I will be taking back the throne as Queen of Wakanda." Ramonda said. "That way Shuri won't feel the pressure in her state."

"That's very kind of you, Queen Ramonda... but are you sure?" asked Ienzo.

"I must do what I need to do for my kingdom like my husband, son, and past Wakandan kings have done." Ramonda said. "I will have those close to help me."

"That is good dedication right there." Lea said to Isa, who nodded in agreement.

"Forgive me if this comes off as insensitive but... won't you have to do the combat fight thing in the water like your son did?" asked Mantis.

"Normally yes, but Queen Ramonda has experience being queen already." said M'Baku. "For all the years she ruled alongside King T'Chaka, she knew what to do. She helped pass on that wisdom to T'Challa."

"We normally don't do exceptions... but given what's happened, this is one of those times." said Okoye.

"Very understandable, yes." said Aeleus.

"Is there anything we can do to help you?" asked Roxas.

"We wanna help in any way you can." nodded Xion.

"You coming here to support us in our time of need is more than enough." said Ramonda. "But if we ever need your help, especially if those Heartless, Nobody, and Unversed creatures show up, you all will be the first to know."

"Of course, your majesty." nodded Dilan.

"You won't have to worry about the Unversed." said Even. "They came from Vanitas himself."

"And now that he's dead, that's one less problem to worry about." added Zack.

Tony scoffed. "Please, in our world of worlds, there's always a problem."

"Whether here on Earth or up in space." said Sam.

"Especially in space." said Rocket.

"I am Groot." said Groot.

"They do usually pay well, yes." nodded Drax.

As they chatted, some of them saw Shuri off to the side. Thor, Wanda, Strange, and Donald walked over to her.

"How are you feeling, Princess Shuri?" asked Thor.

Shuri sniffed. "Not very good..." she said.

"I know what it's like to lose a brother." Thor said gently. "Of course, Loki's alive now, but the pain was always there for me."

"Same with me." said Donald. "I thought Della was dead after the Spear of Selene. Yeah she was alive too, but I never knew that for over 10 years. I felt that pain too."

"I know the feeling too." Wanda said sadly. "Every day of my life I miss Pietro with every fiber of my being. He was practically my other half."

Strange sighed. "I never had a brother... but I did have a sister I lost during ice skating." he confessed. "Trying to save people is why I became a doctor. I know what it's like to lose a sibling you were close with."

Shuri wiped more tears from her eyes as she faced them.

"You're not alone in this, Shuri." said Wanda. "We'll all be there to help you."

"Thank you..." Shuri croaked.

Sora looked around the people inside the palace. Peter spotted him doing so.

"Hey, Sora? You, uh, you looking for someone?" he asked.

"I am." Sora said. He faced Ramonda. "Where's Nakia?"

"Who's Nakia?" asked Chirithy.

"T'Challa's girlfriend." smirked Genesis. "Former War Dog too."

"She helped fight against Killmonger." added Angeal.

Ramonda sighed. "I do not know where Nakia is." she said. "I haven't seen her in years."

"Did you try to contact her about the funeral?" asked Janet.

"We did." said Ayo. "But we never got a response."

"So she's off the grid?" guessed Hill. "If you want, we can try to track her down."

"Maybe the message got lost or she's sick." guessed Bruce.

"Maybe not. Last year after T'Challa was restored, he said he had gone to visit her. We just don't know where." said Aneka.

"She's probably living the private, quiet life." said Hank. "And if she did get the message, maybe she's grieving in her own way."

"I still wish she was here." Shuri said sadly.

"Me too. We haven't seen her for a while." said Kairi.

"Perhaps she has her reasons." said Vision. "As Dr. Pym said, people grieve in their own ways."

"All the same, we're here for you Wakandans if you need us." said Scott.

"You still have a friend in the government in me." said Everett.

"And up in space with us." said Gamora.

"And us Avengers." added Sam.

"And us from across all the worlds." said Riku.

Shuri and Ramonda smiled sadly.

"Thank you, all of you." said Shuri. "If my brother's spirit is among us, he'd be smiling."

"He did tell me something when I told him about losing my parents and uncle during the barbecue celebration at Tony's cabin." said Peter, thinking back.

Flashback, three days after the Battle of the Universe at the Stark Cabin:

Peter was chatting with T'Challa near the lake.

"I know what it's like to miss your dad." Peter said. "I miss mine every day. My mom too. But most of all, my Uncle Ben. He was more of a father figure in my life because he raised me more with my Aunt May. To this day, May and I miss them. The pain never goes away..."

T'Challa offered Peter a gentle smile as he patted his shoulder.

"In my culture, death is not the end. They are still with us, so long as we do not forget them." he said.

Peter managed a small smile. "Thank you..."

Present:

"That does sound like T'Challa alright." M'Baku smiled sadly.

"The afterlife does exist... in one way or another." said Aeleus.

"And we will always remember him in our memories." said Aqua.

"In our hearts as well." said Sora. "T'Challa's memory will live on."

"And we won't let him be forgotten." Shuri said firmly.

The service continued without a hitch as everyone caught up with each other. But the sadness of T'Challa's death was still in their minds and hearts.

Sora looked up to the sky sadly. "Goodbye T'Challa..." he said softly. "Rest in peace..."

He then looked to the side a little.

"Nakia... wherever you are... I hope you're okay... we're here for you like we are for all of Wakanda..."

And Sora rejoined the service.

Haiti:

In her home, Nakia had just put her son, Toussaint, to sleep in his crib.

She had been raising him in private and had not attended the funeral... like T'Challa wished her to do prior to his death. Nakia had been the only one to know he was sick.

She looked at the small memorial she had made for T'Challa. She had used it for a private funeral for her and her son to mourn him.

"Thank you... T'Challa..." she said sadly. "Thank you for everything... my love..."

Nakia let her tears fall down her cheeks as she stayed in grieving silence for the rest of the night.

WAKANDA FOREVER!

Notes:

I hope you all liked the story.

I didn't want to kill T'Challa off in this universe... but I decided to do so out of respect for Chadwick Boseman

I understood why they didn't include any of the Avengers at the funeral in the original movie. And I respect that. I just thought I would change it up here for this universe since T'Challa was an ally to them against Zemo, Klaue, and both versions of Thanos and they're all friends with the Kingdom Hearts, Disney, and Final Fantasy characters here since all their encounters. And I wanted them all to pay their last respects to T'Challa since they considered him an ally, a friend, and an honorary Avenger.

And I just love seeing them all together... even if it is to say goodbye to the dearly departed.

Thank you for everything Chadwick. We'll never forget you.
