Chapter 1

Danielle Stilinski was glad to be home. She was currently in her childhood bedroom, which used to be the attic before she hit puberty and decided that she needed her own space, and that she had redecorated on her last visit home.

The house actually had four bedrooms, and attic and a cellar which now housed everything that used to be in the attic. They had actually remodelled the whole house over the years and in her opinion, it looked fantastic.

It had dark wooden floor boards, with beige walls and a cream ceiling with a bronze chandelier in the centre of the room. It had a queen bed with an antique frame with matching side stables on either side and brass antique lamps with golden brown shade covers. On the wall opposite the bed was a sort of purple grey book shelf that covered the entire wall and in front of it was an antique round light oak table between two armchairs that were the same purple grey as the book shelf with accents of the same light oak as the table with a tall lamp in the corner that matches the lamps on the side tables.

There was an open doorway next to one of the armchairs that was divided by a sheer lavender curtain with black detailing that lead to walk in wardrobe. Directly in front of the door was a vanity desk with all of her make-up and hair care product and as you walk further into the room you get to the wardrobe that was filled with many different types of clothes, shoes and jewellery. Around the corner was her private bathroom that spanned along the wall that divided the bathroom from the bedroom.

All in all, it was a beautiful room.

She had just had a mini celebration of her 21st birthday with her father, Noah Stilinski who gave her a wooden chest that had been passed down from mother to eldest daughter on her mothers side for generations and her little sister Stefania, though she preferred to be called Stiles, who had just turned 16 gave her a beautiful antique necklace.

She was trying to open the chest from her father and was getting frustrated with her not being able to get it open. In her frustration, she let out a burst of energy that caused a slight breeze through her room and to her surprise, opened the chest.

She carefully opened the lid and gently removed the purple felt cloth, she reached inside and pulled out a very old Grimoire. When she looked inside she found five more along with a silver athame that had a triquetra engraved on the blade, it had a four small jewels embedded in each point of the triquetra. It had a blood red ruby embedded in the top point, sapphire in the left point, amber in the right and a small moonstone in the centre. It was a beautiful piece of craftsmanship.

There was also a bunch of different crystals that each had different uses, a scrying crystal, tarot cards and lastly she pulled out a pouch that had a ring and a note. The ring was very old, a thousand years at least. It was silver with an amber stone and what looks to be a small leaf and two different pieces of wood. Quickly reading the note that came with it, Dani learned that the leaf was hazel and the woods were yew and oak. The ring was made to ward of druid magic, which includes Darach magic since a Darach is just a dark druid. She quickly out the ring on and immediately felt lighter, as iff she had been oppressed before hand. Which means that at some point, druid magic had been cast upon her.

When she was finished inspecting the contents of the chest, she gathered up all of the grimoires and put them on the book shelf against the wall opposite her bed and added everything else to her alter that was in a small room off to the side of her study.

She then headed into her walk in wardrobe and changed into a silk pj set before walking back out to her bedroom and grabbing the first grimoire and settling into bed to read it.

As she read, she learned that Gajos witches had been emissaries to the Hale pack since the very first Alpha and had been connected to the local Nemeton for even longer.

As she read, she found a spell to cleanse and enrich the sacred tree and also to bond with it. It also said to do it as soon as the chest had been passed to the next Gajos witch, which was now her.

She decided that she was going to do it that night and  quickly got up and headed back to her wardrobe to change into a comfortable pair of light grey sweats, a light grey tank top and a deep crimson cardigan with a pair of black ugg boots.

Once she was dressed, she went back to her alter room and grabbed a bag to put the athame, salt, five white pillar candles, a small vial of rose water and the grimoire in it before heading out the door. No one was home when she got down stairs so she quickly got into her car and headed to the preserve where she let her magic pull her to where she needed to be.

It too her roughly 40 minutes to reach the tree stump that  was the nemeton so when she got there, she wasted no time in setting everything up to do the spell and took a deep breath before beginning the ritual.

“Hoc sale, te purifico et protego.” (With this salt, I purify and protect thee.) She made a large circle of salt for purification and protection.

“Hac aqua rosacea, te purifico.” (With this rose water, I purify thee.) She sprinkled the rose water over the circle, again for purification.

“His candelis, te dirigo.” (With these candles, I direct thee.) She set the candles at five points in the circle and anointed them with the rose water. “Hac aqua rosacea, te ungo.” (With this rose water, I anoint thee.)

Once all of that was done, she pulled the grimoire and athame from the bag and packed everything else back in the bag before setting it down outside the circle.

She sat in the middle of the circle closed her eyes and took a deep, calming breathe. When she reopened her eyes she felt overwhelmingly calm and powerful as she looked to the candles. “Ignis.” (Fire.) She spoke confidently and all five candle lit.

“Ad te, Nemeton, venio ut mundem, locupletem, et coniungam. Tibi offero sanguinem meum sacrum et magnum ut una hanc urbem eiusque incolas protegere possimus.” (I come to you Nemeton, to cleanse, to enrich and to bond. I offer you my sacred blood and magic so that together we may protect this town and it’s inhabitants.) She used the athame to cut across her palm and dripped her blood onto the Nemeton and released a burst of energy with each drop of blood. “Purifica, Protege, coniunge. Purifica, Protege, coniunge. Purifica, Protege, coniunge.” (Purify, Protect, Bond. Purify, Protect, Bond. Purify, Protect, Bond.)

As she uttered the last syllable, the candles went out, she felt great burst of energy and then an awareness in her mind that wasn’t there before. She nudged it curiously and it sent away warning that there was something behind her.

She quickly spun around and was met with the face of an Alpha werewolf, but there was something wrong with it. It had a ring of purple around it’s iris’s and it was severely deformed. Not only was this Alpha werewolf being poisoned, but it was also feral.

As she watched it, waiting to see what it would do, she felt it’s curiousness along with an overwhelming amount of pain, grief, anger and loneliness. Something terrible had happened to this wolf and was still happening to it.

She stood to great it but it seemed to scent the air and growled before running off in the other direction. She stared after it for a moment before turning to dispel her circle and pack away her supplies so that she could go home and meditate so that she could get used to the new presence in her mind and get a good nights sleep.

When she got home there was still no one home so she mad herself a cup of hot chocolate before heading upstairs to her room.

Once there she set he mug on her side table and kicked off her shoes as she climbed into bed and pulled out her phone and dialled the last number that she had called, it was picked up on the third ring.”

“What’s wrong?” He asked, immediately worried that his best friend was calling him at this time of the night.

“I was out in the woods tonight to purify, protect and bond with the nemeton as my ancestors have done since before the Hales moved here.” She paused and took a deep breath. “As I was packing up to leave, I saw an Alpha werewolf but Derek, there was something severely wrong with him.”

“What do you mean?” She could practically hear his eyebrows furrowing.

“It was severely deformed and it had a ring of purple around it’s iris’s.” She told him and heard his sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. “Not only is this Alpha backless and feral, but somebody is poisoning him. All I could feel from him was this overwhelming sense of pain, grief, anger and loneliness. Something horrible happened to this Alpha Derek, I think you and Laura need to get here asap.”

“Laura’s already there.” He told her and she paused, mid sip of her hot chocolate.

“What?”

“Laura left here three days ago and I haven’t heard from her since yesterday morning, I’m just packing up a few things at the apartment and I’ll be leaving within the next half hour.”

“No, you’ll get some sleep and leave in the morning so that I don’t have to worry about you getting into a car crash. Call me when you near the border and I’ll meet you there, I’m gonna head over to the station and file a missing persons for Laura as she hasn’t answered any of my calls or texts in days.”

“Fine, I’ll see you in the morning.” He hung up and she shook her head before draining her mug and putting her boots back of as she got out of bed to head back down the stairs. She quickly washed the mug before rushing back out the front door, vaguely noticing that the jeep was in the driveway next to her car.

When she got to the station it was busing with noise and energy, something big must be going on for them to be this busy in here.

She quickly rushed to the desk and gave a strained smile to the harried woman behind the desk as she glanced at her. “Hey Debbie, is my dad in? It’s important.”

“Yeah sure, he’s in his office.”

“Thanks.” Dani gave another strained smile before hurrying to her father’s office and knocking on his open door as she stepped in.

“Dani, what are you doing here?” He asked as he stood from his desk and pulled her into the room and shut the door. “We’re a little busy here.”

“I noticed but I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t important.” She told him as she sat in one of the chairs in front of his desk and he sat back in his.

“Alright, what’s happened.”

“Well I just got off the phone to my friend, Derek Hale.” Her dad’s eyes widened. “Yeah we went to Stanford together, anyway, he’s going to be here in the morning because his sister Laura is missing. She left New York three days ago to come back here and neither of us has heard from her since yesterday morning.” Noah could feel the blood draining from her face.

“Did Derek say why she came back here?” Dani shook her head.

“We both asked her but she wouldn’t say.” She wrung her hands together in a nervous tick. “All he knows is that she got something in the mail that spooked her, she left the next day.”

“So you know Laura pretty well?” She nodded.

“Yeah, Derek, Peter and I were always pretty close since we were all close in age so I knew all of the Hales fairly well.”

“So you wold be able to identify her?” Dani frowned in confusion.

“Identify……” She cut herself off as she realised what he was implying and shook her head as tears welled up. “No.” He got up and walked around the desk and put him hand on her shoulder.

“We found a body tonight.” He told her and the tears broke free. “Female, mid to late twenties, brown hair. She wasn’t found with anything on her so we have no ID for her, I hate to ask this of you but we need to know if it is her.” She was crying in full now and holding onto her fathers arm. “We don’t need to do this now.” He started but she shook her head.

“No, I need to know. Derek needs to know.” She took a deep breath and steeled herself. “Take me to her.” He watched her for a moment with sad eyes before nodding and lead her out of the room.

“Mills.” Noah gestured for him to follow them. “We may have an ID on our Jane Doe.” The officers that were in hearing ranged paused what they were doing and glanced over at Dani’s tear streaked face and watched as she was lead to the morgue. “This isn’t a pretty sight, are you sure you want to do this?” He asked as they came to a stop at a table with the clear outline of a body on it covered with a white sheet, she nodded.

“I need to know.” He nodded and Mills grasped the the sheet and slowly pulled it down to reveal her face. Dani let out a strangled cry and nodded as he legs buckled, her father quickly grabbed her and held her to his side as she buried her head in his chest and cried. “It’s her, it’s Laura.”

“It’s official, Jane Doe is Laura Hale.” Noah stated as he lead his daughter into his office where he held her until she had calmed down. “Laura’s body shows signs of torture.” He paused and watched her with a sharp look as she stiffened and sat up in her seat. “I need to know who would want to hurt her.”

“Look, Derek won’t say anything because he still believes it was his fault and we’ve never had any proof.” Dani sighed. “And I won’t betray his trust so I need you too look into the Hale fire.”

“That was proved to be an accident.” He frowned. “What does that have to do with this?”

“It wasn’t an accident.” She told him. “If you look into the fire, you will find who killed Laura.” She sighed. “I want to offer Derek the guest room when he gets here, I don’t want him on his own.”

“That’s fine sweetheart.” He smiled and squeezed her hand as he got up to sit back behind his desk. “I’m gonna need Derek’s phone number so I can give him the news.” Dani shook her head.

“No, I’ll do it.” She told him as she stood to leave. “He should hear it from me.”

“Alright, you head home and get some sleep.”

“I will.” She kissed his cheek and headed back out to her car and headed home.

When she got home, she when and stuck her head in Stiles’ room and saw that she was asleep.

Stiles’ room was, in her humble opinion, a work of art. Since Scott would often stay the night at their house, Stiles had decided that she wanted bunk beds in her room so that Scott could sleep in her room. So they built a beautiful, large bunk bed that went from floor to ceiling across one of the walls and right beside the large window.

In the centre of the wall the built a platform that was wide enough for a king single bed and a side table that ran from the edge of the window, across two thirds if the wall where they built another wall that divided beds from the walk in wardrobe that they also built for her.

They built an open wall along the length of the bed with an arch at the top and a half wall at the bottom. Underneath the half wall, they built another frame that left the space under neath open. The space was large enough for the queen bed that they had bought that was going to be Stiles’ bed. At the end of the bed, beside Stiles’ bed they built in a small boot cupboard with a set of stairs that lead to the top.

They built a set of shelves that went all the way around Stile’s bed that she could decorate and use for side tables. Both beds also had soft warm lights built in above them that were just bright enough to read a book if they wanted to.

Once all of that was built they painted the walls in a soft pink that was so light it was almost a cream colour and the roof and feature wall in a soft purple grey colour. Once the paint was dry, they put the furniture in their new places. They put in a bronze curtain at the end of the single bed to divide the small room from the stairs at the end. The area above the boot cupboard had a rail built in that went from the wall to and down the stairs and had some small cupboards built in that would housed Scott’s clothes that he left there.

Once Scott and Stiles and hit puberty and it became inappropriate for them to sleep in the same room, they converted Scott’s sleeping area into a study area for Stiles and knocked down the feature wall that divided Stiles’ room from one of the guest rooms and built in a small bathroom between both rooms and rebuilt the walls with a door on each side that connected to the bathroom.

The guest room that was connected to Stiles’ room through the bathroom was turned into a multi purpose room. It was primarily a study that had a double bed that folded into the wall, with a desk and window seat built in along with shelves and cupboards the covered three walls or the room.

Dani shook herself out of her train of thought and headed up to her room and climbed into bed before grabbing her phone once more ad dialled a number that she knew by heart.

“What’s happened?” Like before he picked up on the third ring and didn’t bother with pleasantries.

“I’ve just come back from the station, they found a body in the woods tonight Derek.” She paused and took a deep breath. “It was Laura.” His breathing hitched before he spoke again.

“Are you sure?” She nodded even thought he couldn’t see her.

“I identified her myself.” She paused once more, debating on if she should tell him the rest before deciding that he should know. “Derek, she was tortured. I think whoever is poisoning the Alpha I saw tonight killed her. The feral Alpha may have been the one to finish her off but she was tortured and left out in the woods, probably smelling of hunters. So here’s this strange Alpha wolf in what he probably see’s as his territory smelling of the enemy and to top it all off, she’s injured.”

“Yeah, it makes sense.” He sighed. “We’re still gonna have to put him down though.”

“Yeah, I know. Just know that you already have an emissary in me when you become the Alpha.”

“Thank you.” She smiled.

“I’m gonna get some sleep, I’ll see you in the morning.” She told him. “Oh and you’re staying here with us so just come straight here, goodnight.” She hung up, not even giving him a chance to argue.

Dani woke up early the next morning and jumped in the shower before dressing in a pair of black skinny jeans, a black tank top and a maroon cardigan which she paired with a pair of black knee high boots, the necklace she got from Stiles the night before and a pair of silver hoop earrings with diamond studs in her other piercings.

Once she was dressed she cooked some bacon, eggs and toast for her dad and Stiles and put them it in the oven to keep warm, then made herself a black coffee with caramel syrup and two sugars and sat down to eat a bowel of cereal and yoghurt.

She was just finishing her breakfast when her dad walked in the door and Stiles came rushing down the stairs. “Crap, I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.” She chanted as she rushed towards the door.

She was and exquisite beauty, her sister. She was two inches taller than Dani’s 5’3”, putting her at 5’5”. She had gotten their father’s chocolate brown hair and his bronzed tan but had their mothers chocolate brown eyes, whilst I was the opposite. I had our mothers auburn hair and pale skin, but had our father’s sapphire blue eyes.

“No you’re not.” She told her as she washed her bowel in the sink and turned to get the food out of the oven. “I set your alarm back forty minutes, so you can sit and eat like a normal person before you leave for school.”

“What did you set my alarm back for?”

“Because you’re always running down the stairs int the morning complaining about being late, now sit and eat.” She shoved a plate of food at her then shoved another in her fathers direction, along with a coffee each. “You too. Sit and eat, then go and get some sleep.”

“You know I’m the parent here right?” Noah asked, dryly as he obeyed her command to sit and eat.

“I’m a grown ass woman and you’re an overworked Sherriff.” She replied tartly. “Derek will be here in about two hours so I’m gonna go and get some groceries and some things for the spare room.” She told them as she collected her handbag and keys from the table by the door.

“Who’s Derek?” Stiles asked, slyly. “Is he your boyfriend?”

“No, it’s Derek Hale.” She rolled her eyes and paused as recognition and sympathy flashed across Stiles’ face. “He’s my best friend and has been since we were kids, we were in the same grade.”

“Why is he staying here though?”

“That’s not your concern right now, though you better be on your best behaviour whilst he’s here. He’s going through a lot and doesn’t need you badgering him with invasive or inappropriate questions.” Stiles raised her hands in surrender with a smirk on her face. “I mean it. if I hear you say one thing that I don’t like, I’m gonna destroy all of your favourite movies and shows, hide the keys to the jeep somewhere you’ll never find them and tie you to a chair and make you watch the notebook on repeat until Derek laughs and believe me when I say that is something that’s very difficult to achieve.” Now she looks appropriately worried.

“You wouldn’t do that to me would you?” She asked, a little desperately. “I’m your sister and you love me.”

“Yes but Derek is also my brother and I love him just as much as I love you.” She told her seriously. “He’s going through something right now and need support, not harassment.”

“Alright.” She conceded. “I’ll behave.”

“Good.” She nodded in satisfaction. “Glad we sorted that out. I’ll be back in an hour or so.” She told her dad before kissing him on the cheek and heading out the door.

Chapter 2

When Dani got back to the house she immediately got to work putting away all of the food she bought which was a mixture of vegetables, meats, fruits, dairy products and fresh bread along with two slabs of bottled water. One to go in her room for her mini fridge as she hated tap water and one to go in the guest room for Derek for the same reason.

Once all of the food was packed away Dani headed upstairs to the guest room, that doubled as a study area like the other one, with the new bedding that she bought for Derek while she was out to clean the room and make the bed.

The room had a custom Dani and her dad had built together before she went off to college, it had white cupboards and shelving that spanned two whole walls from corner to corner and from floor to ceiling.

From one side it had a desk with a dark wooden top and white drawers and a wooden chair with comfortable white padding and white cupboards above it beside the window.

Below the window was a bench seat with two drawers and two cupboards built into it and a dark wooden top, it was decorated with two blue cushions and a brown one. The he window itself was covered by brown blinds and above the window was more shelving.

In the corner was two more cupboards with a dark wooden top and white shelving that went from the top of the cupboards all the way to the ceiling.

Beside it was a hideaway double bed that was originally just a boring white blank space with four small shelves above it, until I raided my art collection and found, ironically enough, two large paintings of the moon in different phases depicted as though someone was standing in a dark forest and was looking up at the moon through the trees. One moon was depicted as full and the other was a waxing crescent moon.

Beside that was even more cupboards and shelving that covers the rest of the wall. Every shelf was covered either in books, fake greenery or little knick knacks.

Opposite the bed was a large chest of drawers with a tv on top of it and a large closet beside it, again both were white with dark wood accents.

Dani walked in and set the brand new bedding on the bench seat under the window and went to pull the bed down so that she could make it. The mattress had never been used before so she only needed to remove the plastic covering from it and putting the new bronze  satin sheets on it. Once that was done she folded it back up and put the matching pillow cases on the unused pillows that were kept in one of the cupboards. She then unwrapped the new duvet and folded it before placing it in the cupboard beside the pillow and put the matching pillowcases on the two new pillows she had bought before putting them in with the other two pillows.

Once all of that was done she gathered all of the rubbish to take out to the rubbish bin and noticed Derek’s black camaro pulling into the driveway behind her mustang.

She immediately went to give him a high hug before pulling back and taking notice of the dark bags under his eyes.

“Come on.” She told him as she took a step back, squeezing his hand as she did. “I’ll make you a coffee, dad’s asleep upstairs so we can’t be too loud.”

“You know I could’ve found a place to stay.” He said as she lead him inside.

“I know you too well Derek.” She told him as she lead him to the kitchen and immediately put the kettle on and started making coffee’s for them. “You would’ve went to stay at your old house and spent the whole time drowning yourself in your own misplaced guilt. I wasn’t gonna let you do that. Besides, I need my best friend right now. And you need me.”

They sat at the kitchen table to discuss the happenings of the night before and their plans for the afternoon.

“I wanna go to where Laura was found and see if I can find a scent.” He told her and she nodded.

“Yeah, we can do that.” She told him and paused a bit in thought. “But before we do that, I wanna do some scrying to see what I can find. I can bring you in with me so that you can see what I do, it’ll work pretty well since you see me as pack. If we use your blood as the anchor, we may even get to see who killed Laura. Both the hunters and the wolf.”

He thought to himself for a moment and nodded, deciding that it was a good idea and wanted to go and do it right away. Dani quickly pressed the pause button on that and told him that they weren’t doing any magic until they’d had lunch because magic took the energy of the user.

She made a quick and easy lunch of chicken caesar salad with the left over chicken that was in the fridge and the leftover bacon from this morning’s breakfast before heading upstairs to wake her dad.

Her dad’s room had never been changed since her parents had bought the house, apart from the bedding and a new rug every now and then and tv.

The master bedroom had dark wood floors and bronze brown painted walls. It had a large built in wardrobe and a small sitting area in front the windows.

The bed was a king sized dark wood that watched the floors and chocolate brown side tables with a large cream rug that covered half of the floor, it also had a ladies bench at the foot of the bed. The wall opposite the bed had a built in entertainment unit that had a large flat screen tv on it, plenty of space for books and dvd’s. It had a row of drawers directly underneath the tv and all along the unit and underneath that was a row of cupboards.

When she poked her head in the door, her dad was already sitting up and rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He looked up when she poked her head in the door and smiled before checking the time and standing from the bed.

“I just wanted to let you know that lunch is ready and that Derek is here.” He smiled as he exited the room and started for the bathroom.

“I’ll be down in I minute.” He told her as she started down the stairs.

She quickly set the table and placed the bowel in the middle so the three of them could reach it and placed a fresh coffee at each place setting. Her and Derek were just sitting down and dishing their own portions when Noah walked down the stairs.

“Hello Derek.” He clasped the young man sitting across from his daughter on the shoulder as he passed him to get to his seat at the head of the table. “It’s been a long time. I am very sorry for the loss of your sister, she was a bright young woman from what I remember.”

“Thank you Sherriff, it means it a lot.” There was silence for a moment as they ate before Dani spoke.

“Just so you know.” She glanced at her dad before looking at Derek. “You don’t need to be hide what you are in this house as dad knows of the supernatural and Stiles is showing signs of being a witch as well, so I was going to sit her down and explain everything to her soon.” Derek’s eyes widened as he turned to the Sherriff who just smiled at him.

“My wife was a witch along with my eldest daughter and it looks like my youngest might be too, though I’m wondering why it has taken her so long to show signs.” He turned two Dani who had a scowl on her face.

“Last night I found a ring in mum’s chest and when I put it on, I immediately let like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. Like I had been in chains before putting it on.” She told them. “This ring is to ward off Druidic magic and I’m pretty sure that if I wasn’t the eldest Gajos witch of my generation and, it wold have taken me just as long. I also remember having difficulties with my casting until I got that power boost when mum passed and I became the eldest living Gajos witch. I think that there is a druid in this town and that he cast a magic suppression spell on all of us. It would explain mum’s rapid decent when she got sick.” Her dad’s face paled when she said this and he quickly became angry.

“You think that your mother was murdered?” He asked in a dangerous tone.

“I do.” She nodded before glancing to Derek. “She was the Hale emissary and was teaching me everything I needed to know for when it was my time to take over. It’s no coincidence that she became sick and died less then a year later and the Hale fire happened the next day when her protections broke.” Derek looked at her sharply.

“You think Kate did this?” He asked, but she shook her head.

“No, I think that the druid who suppressed our magic became your mother's next emissary and slowly eroded her protections. I also think that they knew each other in some capacity, to what extent I don’t know, but I’m gonna find out.” She told them. “I’m gonna make Stiles a ring like mine before explaining everything to her, the sooner she knows everything and starts learning the better. I think she will also settle down and be able to focus more because the suppression is what is causing her adhd. Once she starts using her magic, the fidgeting will disappear and her concentration will improve.”

“How long will it take you to make this ring?” Noah asked his eldest daughter as he worried for his youngest.

“Not very long at all.” She told him and squeezed his hand in reassurance. “I have everything I need to do it now. Derek and I are also going to be scrying to see if we can find anything about who killed Laura and we’re also going into the woods to see if Derek can get anything, or if I can get a vision.” Derek looked at her sharply.

“You didn’t tell me you were going to try for a vision.” Dani shrugged, unconcerned.

“I’ll be fine.” She told both worried males. “If you’re done Derek, let’s go.” She grabbed their dishes and quickly rinsed them in the sink and put them in the dishwasher before leading him up to her room.

She lead him up the stairs to her rooms and the first room off the stairs was my living room/library. It was a large room that had beige painted walls with white detailing and a large beige rug on the floor. The wall directly to the left of the staircase had a fire place built in the centre of the wall with a tv sitting on the mantle above it. It had shelves built into the walls on either side of it filled with photos and knick knacks of importance to her. There were white arm chairs on either side of the fire place, a large cream rectangular foot stool that doubled as a table and a large white couch. There were book shelves all around the room that were filled with books of all kinds. The wall to the left of the room was actually a glass one that was covered with white lace curtains and a set of beige blockout curtains in front of them. It also had a door that lead to the balcony that spread across the whole front of the house that she had decorated with assorted greens and other beautiful plants, along with some outdoor furniture in the form of a white couch, a few white arm chairs and a white wicker table with a glass top.

To the right of the stairs there was a door in between two bookshelves that lead to her office where she lead Derek.

This room also had beige walls with white detailing and a large cream rug on the floor. There was a large window on the back wall that showed nothing but the slue sky and the beautiful green trees behind their house. There were cupboards and shelves built into the walls, again filled with books, pictures and knick knacks, that were painted white and her desk was built into the shelving.

She had a white desk chair and a large beige couch against the white panelling on the back wall under the window with a small black metal framed table with a glass top on either side of the couch, each table also had a bronze lamp with cream shade on them.

To the left of the door that they entered was another door that lead to her alter room.

This room was the darkest room in the entire house as all alter rooms usually were due to the ambient magic that lingers after spells have been cast.

The walls were painted a dark sort of burnt green colour with bronze detailing and mahogany accents. There was a fire place in this room as well that was more fore spells that required an open fire than for warmth.

On the mantle above the fireplace was a bronze framed mirror that she used for scrying, with candles all around it in varying sizes. To the left of the fireplace was a cabinet that contained all of her ritual tools and crystals and on the right was a cabinet that contained all of her more volatile/poisonous ingredients.

The floor was covered by a large bronze rug with gold detailing, again the walls were covered in book shelves that were filled with grimoires, tools and the less volatile ingredients.

There was a small window on one of the walls to air out the room when needed, but most of the time it was kept closed and covered by a deep dark purple/pink curtain. There was also a door that lead to her bathroom.

The centre of the room had a large mahogany couch with the cushioning in the sam colour as the curtain and matching arm chairs. In the centre of the couch and chairs was a rectangular mahogany table with with bronze detailing.

In each corner of the room were some plants that she grew and harvested for her spells and potions as it was actually illegal to have most of them and more difficult to obtain some of them as they were difficult to grow if you didn’t know what you were doing. It was why she took a botany course as one of her electives in college.

She directed Derek to take a seat before heading over to her tool cabinet to grab one of the amber rings set in silver that she had and then to her ingredient cabinet to grab some hazel, yew and oak to bind to the ring.

She brought them to the table in the middle of the room along with salt and some candles along with one of her grimoires.

She then knelt in front on the table and made a circle of salt on the table and placed five small pillar candles on the salt in the form of a pentagram. Once that was done, she snapped her fingers and lit the candles around the circle, she then closed her eyes and began to chant.

“By the light that surrounds me, I am safe and free, with love as my armour, no harm shall come to me. In shadows that linger, I stand strong and bright, protected and guided, I embraced the light. Negative forces, you cannot draw near, with this shield of protection, I cast out all fear. As I walk through this world, I carry my grace, in the warmth of this light, I find my safe space.”

When she opened her eyes, the air in the room feels lighter. Derek must have decided it was now safe to talk as he had a question.

“Do you need to cast that spell every time you come in here?” She shook her head.

“No, only when I’m going to be casting a spell with the potential for invoking danger. Like the crying spell that I’ll be casting after this.” She told him as she placed the ring and the ingredients in the centre of the circle and held her hands above them.

She imagined them all combining together in the stone and chanted under her breath as she infused the ring with power.

Once that was done, she picked up the bundle of sage and held it  over the candle to light it and once it was lit, she picked up the ring and passed it through the smoke.

“By the power of this purifying smoke, I now cleanse you of all negative energy.”

She then put the sage in the ashtray but left it burning as she held the ring in both hands and directed her energy into the ring before she began the last chant.

“I charge this ring as a shield to defend Stefania Stilinski and her descendants against injury and danger.”

There was a bright white flash from her between her hands and the candles went out before she opened them to reveal the ring. She then placed it in a velvet pouch and placed it in her pocket before moving to stand before the scrying mirror.

“Right, now lets see what we can see huh?” She said as she gestured for Derek to stand beside her and grabbed his hand before lighting the candles around it.

“Lovely oracle of magic worth fair creature of psychic light, the truest answers, you shall bring forth, you shall be my eyes, my sight.” She took a deep breath and squeezed Dereks hand. “Show us the death of Laura Hale.”

The mirror fogged over and cleared as it showed Laura, weak and bloody, being dragged into the woods by a man who’s face they couldn’t see. He was very clearly a hunter from the way he dressed and the weapons that they could see.

Once they reached the desired area he dropped her to the ground and crouched over her as she gasped for breath.

“It won’t be long now until the wolfsbane kills you.” The hunter spoke, his voice muffled. “Then we’re going to find your brother and kill him, along with your pathetic uncle.” He paused. “Although you might not care too much about that one. You did leave him alone, injured and packless in the same town where the rest of his pack was slaughter like the filthy animals that they are. Kate says hi by the way.” He told her before he stood and left, back the way they came.

Not much later, Laura’s breath grew fainter as the wolfsbane worked and she heard growling coming from the trees and turned her head with great effort and saw a pair of glowing blue eyes with a ring of purple around the iris’s, meaning this wolf was being poisoned, glaring at her.

She scented the air and her eyes widened as she recognised the scent of the wolf who now threatened her.

“I’m so sorry this happened to you, I’m sorry I failed you.” She whispered.

The wold tilted it’s head in confusion as it crept closer and sniffed at her before sneezing and jumping back away from her, growling even fiercer than before.

“It’s okay.” She told him. “I know you don’t recognise me and I smell of hunter and weakness and death, so know this.” She said as she tilted her head back and bared her throat to the wolf as it got closer once more, still growling and raised his claws. “I forgive you.” She breathe before he brought his hand down and slashed her throat.

The mirror fogged over, bringing them back to reality. Both had tears pouring down their faces as they saw everything that had happened in the woods.

“She recognised the wolf, so maybe I will as well.” He told her as he slumped down on the couch once more and Dani knelt in front of the table once more. “She apologised and forgave him.” He whispered, wondering who this wolf could be.

She removed the other candles from the salt circle in the centre of the table and placed a slightly larger black candle in the centre and used her telekinesis to condensed the salt into a smaller circle around the candle itself and stared into the flame.

“Second sight, second sight, come to me now, by this light. May my psychic mind be open, as this charm is now spoken. As the magic does rise, I close my eye. What was once hidden, be revealed in my vision.”

When she opened her eyes once more, she was no longer in the room with Derek. It was just blackness surrounding her until she focused on wanting to find the new Alpha that carried the Hale spark.

At first there was nothing but blurry images and impressions of rage, sadness and loneliness, but then it showed the night he killed Laura through his eyes. There was curiosity as to why this weak and wounded Alpha was speaking to him as if she knew him, this made him angry because he was alone. But the more she spoke, the more he felt a slight recognition in his humans mind.

He drew closer to her once more, ready to put the wounded Alpha out of her misery and enact vengeance for his human.

He was curious when the Alpha bared her neck in submission, accepting her fate but. In the back of his mind he could hear his human yelling and screaming for him not to do it and his grief when he ignored him and quickly slashed her throat before she could change her mind fight back. It was a kindness really, she was dying anyway.

He took them back to his humans place of rest and went to sleep once more to the smell of death and pain.

Once the wolf went to sleep, all that was left was the sound of screaming.

Dani was drawn out of the vision screaming and clutching her head in pain as Derek crouched beside her.

“What happened?” He asked a little desperately.

“The wolf.” She gasped as she looked to Derek, trying to ignore the pounding headache behind her eyes and the urge to throw up. “The wolf is in complete control though the human mind is still there, desperately clinging to life and fighting for control. When the wolf killed Laura, he didn’t know who she was but the human started to recognise her and begged the wolf not to kill her. He tried to fight for control but he was too weak and the wolf ignored him, vowing to enact vengeance for his human. When he went back to what he called his humans resting place it smelled nothing but death and pain but when the wolf went to sleep, all I could hear and feel was screaming and pain. Whoever this wolf is, something horrible happened to him. He’s in so much pain.” He hugged her as she continued to cry out the phantom grief she felt from her vision.

“So you’re saying that the human recognised her but the wolf didn’t.” She nodded against his chest.

“Yes, he didn’t completely remember who she was but he had an impression of remembered affection and love. He knew she was important and didn’t want to kill her but the wolf decided that it was a kindness because she was already dying and in pain and the power would help him get vengeance for whatever happened to the human. He’s so alone and drowning in sadness and grief which grew even more when the wolf killed Laura. Whoever he is, even though he doesn’t remember it, he loved her in some way or form. But I don’t think it was a romantic love, it felt different. More familial.” She told him as she drew back and wiped her face of tears and turned to extinguish the candle before standing.

She glanced at her watched and noticed that it was after two in the afternoon, which means her dad would have already left for his next shift at the station.

“Come on, it’s after two.” She told him as she headed for the door. “We should head to the woods and see if you can pick up any scents before they disappear.”

“Are you sure you’re up to that?” He asked in concern as he followed her out of the room.

“I’m fine.” She told him as they reached the stairs and headed back down to the front door which she locked behind them after grabbing her keys and her bag.

Chapter 3

Derek drove them to his old house when Dani informed him that Laura was found in the woods not too far from there.

With the power of Derek’s super sniffer, they found the area pretty quickly. Although the only scents Derek found was pain, sickness, wolfsbane and Laura’s blood.

“Maybe I can pick something up.” She told him as she moved to sit where she could still see blood on the leaves. “I’ll have a quick look, see what I can see.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” He shook his head, concern on his face. “Not after this morning.”

“That was different, I was trying to find the Alpha specifically. I’m not doing that here, I’m trying to find answers. Whatever Laura wants me to see, I will see.”

“What do you mean, whatever Laura wants you to see?” He asked, confused.

“When someone dies a violent death, sometimes their spirit lingers.” She explained and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. “If she’s still here and she wants to tell us something, this will tell us.”

She shoved her hands into the bloody leaves and let herself sink deep into her mind and relaxed. Within moments she was getting flashes, fragments of memories. A great sadness, remorse and failure. When she opened her eyes again, she was silently crying.

“What did you see?” Derek asked quietly, crouching down in front of her.

“Flashes and fragments mostly. I saw a woman with empty eyes who was laughing, a man with a sword and for a moment there was a flash of Peter’s face and the fire. There were great feelings of sadness, remorse for something and failure. It was all too vague to tell you what it means, but something in my vision will help us find the hunters, if not the Alpha.”

He helped her up from the ground and started to lead them back to the house, silently contemplating what she had seen. They were almost to the car when Derek paused and sniffed the air.

“Someone’s here.” He murmured.

They crept towards where he heard the voices coming from and heard the voices before they saw the faces that accompanied them. Dani identified both voices immediately and rolled her eyes at Derek, letting him know that he didn’t nee to worry.

“Okay, obviously I’m kidding. But, if you see me in shop class trying to melt all the silver I can find, it’s ‘cause Friday’s a full moon.” Derek and I glanced at each other at this statement. Did they know something?

“No, I - I could have sworn this was it.” Dani could just make them out through the trees. “I saw the body, the deer came running.” He turned to face Stiles as he guestured the way the deer ran. “I dropped my inhaler…”

“Maybe the killer moved the body?” Stiles asked, clearly word hadn’t gotten out yet.

“If he did, I hope he left my inhaler.” Scott said, insensitive until the end that one. “Those things are like, eighty bucks.”

“Or maybe.” I said as I stepped through the trees, scaring the crap out of the two little delinquents. “The cops found the body last night and have your inhaler down at the station.”

Stiles’ eyes widened when she saw her sister standing in front of her and Scott’s face dropped, trying for the innocent puppy look that had never worked on her.

“What are you doing here?” Derek snapped. “This is private property.”

“Uh, sorry man.” Stiles stammered as she stepped forward, slightly. Sure that the scary hot guy she was with was safe and wouldn’t hurt her. “We didn’t know.”

“Yeah, we were just looking for something. But..” Scott trailed off when he noticed our unimpressed faces.

“Get out of here.” Dani snapped as she glared at the little cretins. “And Stiles?” Her little sister turned to face her when she her name was called. “Straight home after you’ve dropped your little side kick off, I meant it. No fancy little loop holes you wanna exploit because of my wording. We need to talk.” She stared her down until she agreed and turned to follow Derek back to the car.

“That must be Derek Hale.” She heard her sister say.

“Who?” Came the dopey answer. There was a thumping sound and a muffled “ow’ before Stiles spoke again before I was too far away to hear them.

“Dude, don’t you know anything?”

“So that’s your sister, huh?” Derek asked once they were back in the car.

“Yeah.” She sighed. “Scott’s a bad influence on her. People think it’s the other way around because of her attitude but it’s not. He has this whole innocent puppy thing going about him but don’t let it fool you. That kid lacks any empathy, though he’s good at pretending.”

“He’s a wolf.” Derek told her. “A new one too, he was probably bitten last night.”

“That’s very bad.” She told him. “He’s gonna be our best bet for finding the Alpha, but don’t ever trust him.”

“You really don’t like this kid, do you?” Derek asked, surprised.

“No I really don’t.” She told him. “I’ve seen who he truly is and that is why once we’ve found and dealt with the Alpha and the hunters, I’m gonna bind his wolf and wipe his memories of the supernatural. That kid should never have super powers or, god forbid, become an Alpha.”

“I didn’t know that you could do that.” His tone was a little apprehensive.

“It’s not something that I would do lightly.” She told him. “It’s not only difficult, but it’s also technically a curse and can be broken. But it will take someone who is exceptionally powerful to break it and I don’t know anyone who who be stupid enough to try to break another witches curse. Especially one as powerful as me, I mean the druid might try but he won’t be a problem for much longer. He will also be stripped of his powers, but he will remember everything and be unable to say or do anything about it.”

“We could also hand him over to the council.” Dani shrugged at this.

“Once you’re Alpha and establish a pack, the Alpha pack will come to observe and test you. We can hand him over to them when they leave.” She told him as they pulled up to her house.

She lead him inside and into the kitchen where she started making them a coffee each before leading him into the living room to sit and wait for stiles.

They weren’t waiting more than ten minutes until Stiles got back and was immediately on the defensive as Dani stood, taking their cups to the kitchen to wash them.

“We were just…” she cut herself off when her sister held her hand up for silence.

“I don’t care.” Dani turned to face her with disappointment written all over her face. “You went back to the woods where a woman was found dead the night before after being caught by dad last night doing the exact same thing. What if the person who killed her had come back?” She asked her little sister and she dropped her eyes to the ground. “You need to start thinking of the consequences before you act Stiles.”

“I’m sorry Dani.”

“This is not what I wanted to talk to you about, so consider the matter closed for now. But rest assured that you won’t be seeing Scott outside of school for the next few weeks.” Stiles went to protest but shut up when Dani glared at her. “Not only will I be talking to dad about this, but you will be studying for the next few weeks until I tell you that you can stop.”

“Studying what?” She asked, curiously.

“Follow me.” She told her sister and nudged Derek, who had been silent the whole time, to follow as well.

She lead them up to her rooms and into her alter room before closing the door behind them and turning to watch as her sister took in everything before turning to face her in confusion.

“First of all, I want you to put this on and then tell me what you feel.” She handed her the druid repelling ring that she had made her earlier.

Stiles took the ring, highly confused, and slid it on her right index finger and was immediately hit with what felt like a rush of power and a sense of great relief.

“What was that?” She asked breathlessly.

“That was your magic being unbound and returned to you.” Dani told her with an unreadable expression on her face as she exchanged a look with Derek.

“Magic?” She asked, incredulously. “What do you mean bound.”

“All of the women in our mothers family are witches Stiles, including us.”

“Then why couldn’t our magic save mum?” She asked, angrily.

“Because someone had bound our powers.” She told her. “Mum only really started getting sick when her powers were bound, I was too young and didn’t know enough to notice at the time. I was much like you then with the bouncing around, unable to pay attention for longer than it took to breath. The trouble I had when casting spells that used to be so easy for me, were now very difficult. The only reason I could still cast at all is because I’m the eldest and each generation is stronger than the last. Dad knew something was wrong but didn’t know what, since he’s not a witch.”

“So you think someone killed our mother.” Stiles asked, crying silently.

“Mum was the Hale pack emissary, which is kind of like a witchy go between. We broker deals with other packs, cast the protection spells and any other thing the Alpha might need from us. Mum was teaching me everything I knew to take over for her when I was old enough, as the eldest it was my job to become the next emissary. She got sick and then less then a year later she died, the very next day the fire happened.”

“So someone killed our mum to kill the Hales, why?”

“I think it’s more then that and I plan to find out.” She glanced at Derek again who nodded in return. “The Hales are werewolves and us Gajos witches are loyal to the Hales before all others. We protect them and we guide them, no other wolf will come first. They can’t.” She gave her sister a meaningful look and watched as realisation came upon her. “Yes, your joke was quite accurate. Scott is a werewolf, but he won’t be for long.”

“Why are you so against Scott?” She asked slightly bewildered. “You’ve never liked him.”

“And I suspect that no that your powers are unbound, you will find yourself disenchanted with him as well. When mum died, I became the matriarch and the most powerful witch in our family, the priestess if you will. My block was partially broken that night and from then on, I’ve been able to see things as they are. I’ve been able to see people for who they are and Scott is not who you think he is, but I’ll leave that up for you to discover so that my bias can’t be blamed as the reason your friendship breaks.”

“You’re so sure that I won’t want to be friends with him anymore.” Stiles frowned with her arms crossed.

“Yes.” She shrugged. “I give him until the end of the year, and you will see exactly who he is. Then I will bind his wolf and wipe his memories of anything supernatural and that will be the end of that. First thing you need to learn is that we are loyal to the Hales above all others, if you do something to aid someone else and a member of the Hale pack is harmed in any way because of it, your powers will be bound. Your daughters will still be witches, unless they turn from the Hale pack too. We have bee their emissaries since their pack began and we will not be the ones to break the pact. We cannot harm a Hale wolf, not unless it is in self defence.”

“That seems a bit harsh.” Stiles scowled but her sister just shook her head and started gathering things and spread them out across the table.

“It’s really not. The Hale wolves are the strongest werewolves in the world and the Gajos witches are the strongest magic users in turn. We guard and protect each other and this town along with any who live here, it is our duty and our honour. Come, I want to show you something.” She gestured for them both to sit around the table and take her hands.

When Dani closed her eyes, all of the candles around the room lit up and she began speaking in a language Stiles didn’t know, maybe Latin and suddenly they were no longer in the room together. They were in what looked to be a village watching a man with glowing red eyes and a woman who looked to be casting a spell before they hugged and the scene changed to other red eyed men and women and a woman with magic. It went on and on until they saw their mother with who could only be Talia Hale and then Dani with Derek and a red eyed woman who she thought was Laura Hale.

The scene was cut off when Dani squeezed both of their hands and said “finis” and glanced between the both of them.

“What was that?” Stiles asked in confusion.

“That was generations of Gajos witches and Hale Alphas pledging to protect and serve each other until the end of the lines, meaning that both families will be dead before this oath ends. Both families have prospered with this oath until someone killed our mother and I was too young and inexperienced to take over at the time.”

“What is it that you want me to do, exactly?” Stiles asked, frowning in confusion.

“For now, learn.” Dani told her. “You will come here to this room everyday after school and on the week ends and you will study every book I give you to read, but you will not cast any spells until you have learn both ancient and new latin at least. There are other dead languages that you will need to learn as well but once you learn latin it will be easier to learn other languages. You will also learn our family history from me and the Hale history from Derek. On days where we are unable to be here you will do nothing but read and study, which will come easier to you now that you have been unbound.”

“How many languages have you learned?”

“I know both forms of Latin, both forms of Aramaic, both forms of Norse, both forms of French, Spanish and Olde English.”

“That’s ten languages and you what me to read all of them?” She asked, incredulously.

“You have an eidetic memory now, it will be quite simple for to learn all of those languages and more if you want to. Those are just the ones I learned for spell work, not for fun.”

“You know more?” Her eyes practically bugged out of her head.

“You must not speak of anything that you have learned here today with anyone but us and dad. If anyone asks, you’re grounded. Which technically you are until I’ve decided that you’ve learned your lesson in not going into the woods where someone was killed with idiot boys.”

“You were in there with Derek.” She pointed out and Dani rolled her eyes.

“The difference being that I am an adult and and experienced witch, you are not. Derek is an adult and an experienced werewolf, Scott is not. You are children and he is a reckless idiot who was also attacked in those woods last night. Derek and I know what we are doing, you do not.” Dani snapped and tossed her a book on learning the current form of Latin. “You will read this book and come to me as soon as you are finished reading it so that I can test you and decide if you are ready to learn more or not. Do your homework and start on that book tonight. If Scott calls, you are grounded and if he comes here he will be sent home as well. In fact, I’m going to speak to Melissa and have it enforced after I’ve spoken to dad and had yours enforced.” Stiles went to protest but stopped when Dani raised her had for silence once more. “You will not leave this house unless it is to go to school until you are able to defend yourself, you will also begin self defence lessons. You will need them as hunters hate witches just as much as they hate werewolves. Now go.” Stiles walked out of the room with her head down and paused outside the door when she heard Derek speak.

“That was a little harsh.”

“I know, but I couldn’t live with myself if she gets killed out there because I didn’t make sure she knew everything she needs to know. Not to mention what it would do to our dad.” There was a pause. “There are hunters in town Derek, there is also the druid that bound us. She needs to be ready, or she will be easy pickings for anyone who wants our power or to kill us. She will thank me when she is attacked for the first time and is able to defend herself, and it will happen. There’s no way it won’t.”

“I get that but did you have to be so harsh with her.” Derek argued.

“Yes, I did.” She told him. “You don’t know Stiles as I do. If I hadn’t been so harsh, she would have taken what I said as a gentle warning and it would be my sisters body I’m identifying in the morgue next and that would kill me. You, my dad and Stiles are all I have left now. Especially since it doesn’t look like Peter is ever going to come out of his coma.”

“You still where the promise ring he gave you.” He stated, tone slightly questioning.

“Just because he’s not here anymore, doesn’t mean I stopped loving him. Besides, it’s part of a set. The first is his promise to marry me, then there’s the engagement ring and the wedding ring. I never saw them but I know they are in his apartment.”

“Have you been back there?”

“No.” Her voice is small. “It’s too hard.”

With that Stiles walked off with endless questions on the tip of her tongue but knowing that her sister wouldn’t appreciate her eavesdropping, though she suspects that Derek knew that she was there and asked those questions so that she would understand her sisters reasons for doing things as she was.

She had also never known that the ring her sister wore on her left middle finger was a promise ring. It was a beautiful ring. It was made of white gold and diamond. It had a diamond heart in the middle with leaves and swirly patterns that went half way down the ring on either side and were encrusted with diamonds.

She never took that ring off along with a few others that she always wore that she now thought had also come from Peter, and was often caught playing with it whenever she was nervous or lost in thought. She would also get a sad look on her face whenever she looked at it,  like she was thinking of something of something that hurt her.

It explained a few things, now that she thought about it. Dani never dated anyone, despite being very beautiful. She never went to her prom and got quiet when the topic of having children was brought up by Melissa. Stiles wondered if their father knew. If she remembered correctly, Peter Hale was five years older then Dani.

Now she felt really bad about all of the times she gave her sister crap about becoming an old spinster and never getting married. It also explained why she would always get a hurt expression on her face when she did.

When their father got home, he directed his disappointed face towards his youngest daughter and quietly enforced the grounding his eldest bestowed upon her and called Melissa personally to do the same with Scott. To say that the woman was disappointed with her son was an understatement.

Stiles had also taken a step back from Scott at school and had started spending all of her free time at school in the library. She had switched from lacrosse to track and ate her lunch out in the school yard under a tree with the language book that Dani wanted her to learn.

Her sister was right when she said that she would find learning things easier now, she was also right when she said that her eyes would be opened to Scott’s true character.

He was constantly mad that she wanted to study instead of goofing off and he was mad that she switched her sports teams. He was mad when she wanted to study instead of hang out with him and his new girlfriend and called her a nerd when she told him that she was in the library during free periods.

“I’m trying to pick up my grades Scott.” She snapped at him one day. “Just because you’re alright with scraping by with a barely passing grade, doesn’t mean I am.” She snapped at him one day, to the amazement of other students who didn’t think the pair even knew how to fight or argue with each other.

Scott had decided to ignore both his grounding and Stiles warning that he was a werewolf after she did research to show him and go to Lydia’s party on Friday night, which was a full moon, with Allison.

Stiles immediately told her sister what was going on and Dani told Derek who decided to go and keep an eye on the idiot boy to make sure he didn’t hurt anyone.

“There were hunters waiting in the preserve.” Derek told them when he got back that night. “I just barely got us both away from them because the stupid boy kept carrying on about how it was my fault and I did this to him.” Derek growled in irritation.

“Did he not see your eyes?” Dani asked, incredulously.

“Oh, he saw them alright.” Derek rolled his eyes. “I think he’s just that stupid and wilfully blind, but there’s something much worse that I found out tonight.”

“What is it?” Dani asked, dread pooling in her gut.

“His date tonight was an Argent and one of the hunters that attacked us tonight was also an Argent.” Derek glowered into the fire in the fireplace under the tv.

“Are you freaking kidding me?” Dani snapped and let a little burst of energy from her hands in her anger. “He’s gonna get us all killed.”

“Maybe we should explain to him who her family is and what they do.” Stiles suggested and Dani gave her a deadpan look.

“He’s finally getting out from under the nerd banner and got himself a hot girlfriend, do you really think he’s gonna stop seeing her just because her family is psycho?”

“We all need to calm down and get some rest tonight and Stiles has school in the morning. You and I are gonna do some training tomorrow too.” He told her with a smirk that she scowled at.

“You do know that I’ve been trained in martial arts since I could walk right.”

The next morning found Dani and Derek by the river, deep in the preserve training. He was testing her strength and endurance whilst she was testing his skill.

Both were pretty good but could use some  enhancing, she tired to quickly and he relied too much on his powers.

All in all, it was a good idea to have this training session that day as it enabled them to see where they both needed improvement.

Once they were done for the day, they decided to head out for lunch before heading back to the house. Dani grabbed her jewellery back out of the locked glove box and put them back on including her promise ring and the beautiful white gold and diamond leaf ring that Peter gave her when she agreed to go on a date with him. She wore it on her right middle finger.

On her left index finger was the claddagh ring he had given her on their six month anniversary. It was also made of white gold, the heart was made from a sapphire, for her birth month and the crown had a diamond in the centre of it. She won so that the heart was pointing towards her, meaning that she belonged to somebody.

The claddagh ring had a matching band that he had given her for their one month anniversary. It had a diamond in the centre of the band that fit in between the hands that were holding the heart and on either side it had a sapphire. The pattern went on from sapphire to diamond for half of the band on either side. He had great taste in jewellery and almost sent herself into a depressive state when she wondered what the engagement ring would look like, she he have been able to get her one.

“Are you ever gonna be able to move on?” Derek asked as he watched her put her rings back on, reverently. “You know he’d want you to be happy.”

“Will you ever move on?” She asked with a slight glare when she looked up at him. “Besides, he’s not dead. Stop acting like he is.” she snapped and got out of the car and used her magic to teleport herself away.

Chapter 4

When Dani opened her eyes she found herself standing in front of the hospital in the tree line and stood there for a few minutes as she tried to work up the courage to go in there.

When she finally worked up the nerve she walked in and slowly walked down the corridor for the long term care unit and quickly found Peter’s room.

She slowly opened the door and just stood there in the doorway for a few moments, just staring at his form sat in a wheelchair in front of the windows.

When she finally walked over there, she walked around him to stand in front of him and just stared for a moment before crouching down in front of him and clasping his hand in hers whilst tears streamed down her face.

“Hello my love.” She whispered painfully through a clogged throat. “I’m back again.” She told him. “This time for good. I graduated early and with honours, dad was so proud. Derek was there for the graduation ceremony along with Laura and Stiles, she’s grown so much that you almost wouldn’t recognise her. She’s finally come into her magic as well, though we’ve also just learned that both our our magics had been blocked by a druid. This druid also blocked our mothers magic which killed her and your pack was killed the very next day after she died.” Dani paused and fully knelt on the ground in front of him and no covered both of his hands with hers. They were so cold, which was wrong as he used to run so hot.

“Laura was killed a few days ago and Derek returned to Beacon Hills to find the hunters and the feral Alpha that killed her. I think he resents her forcing him to leave here, he had wanted to stay. But as you know, Alpha’s word is law.” She paused and looked into his unchanged face, tears coming harder then before. “Please come back to me, I miss you so much.” She cried and buried her face in their joined hands on his lap.

It was roughly another five minutes before she was interrupted by a voice that she had wanted to avoid for just a little while longer as he reminded her too much of his uncle and her lost love.

“I  thought I’d find you here.” Derek said as he entered the room and quickly rushed to her side when he noticed her state. “Oh, Dani. Come here.” He pulled her into his arms and she cried even harder.

“I miss him so much.” She cried into his shoulder before turning to face Peter again, whilst still hugging Derek. “There has to be a spell, or something that will heal him and bring him back.”

“We’ll find something.” Derek told her as he pulled back and wiped the tears from her face. “Peter has a whole section on witchcraft in the vaults, I’m sure he won’t mind you perusing his collection. Especially if something in them heals him, he especially won’t mind if it’s you whose looking. He loved you more than anything and will still love you when he wakes.”

“What if he wakes up and doesn’t remember me?” Derek shook his head.

“Impossible, you’re the one thing that he would never forget.” He told her. “You’re his mate. Even if the human memories disappeared, the wolf will always remember.” He squeezed her shoulders and took a step back. “Now come on, your sister should be home from school now.” He walked to the door and waited for her to join him as she faced Peter once more.

“I’ll be back soon, my love.” She ran her hand down his scarred cheek and kissed him on the forehead as she whispered. “I love you.” She tucked a copy of a picture of the two of them that she always carried in the pocket on the inside of his jacket. “So that you will remember me and the love we shared.” She turned and left the room with Derek beside her.

In the room the wolf moved Peter’s hand and pulled out the photo that his mate had tucked into his pocket and stared at it. It was a picture of his human and his mate, his human had his arms wrapped around her waist and was smiling down at her, her arms were wrapped around the back of his neck as she smiled up at him. When he lifted it to his nose, all he could smell was his mate. He returned it to his pocket and went to sleep once more.

When they got home, Stiles was indeed waiting for them in the living room with a cup of coffee and one of the books that Dani had assigned for her to read. She quickly stood from her seat when they walked in and noticed that her sister had been crying, but the look on her face told her not to ask.

“You were right about Scott not keeping his distance once he realised that her family was dangerous.” Stiles told them as they all walked into the kitchen together and Derek started making coffees. “Allison’s dad came to pick her this afternoon and Scott identified him as the one that shot him in the preserve last night but he still wants to pursue her.” Dani shook her head and rolled her eyes.

“If you ever find out that your boyfriend is a hunter, I expect you to dump his ass the moment you find out.” Dani told her and spied Derek’s stiffening shoulders out of the corner of her eye and frowned for a moment before her eyes widened slightly before she smirked.

“As if I would ever be stupid enough to date a hunter.” Stiles retorted with an eye roll. “I don’t want to fall in love, I’ve seen what it does to people when they loose the one they love and I don’t want to go through that.” Dani smiled sadly at this and squeezed her little sisters hands.

“Don’t say that, life is not worth living without love. As the old saying goes, ‘It’s better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all.’ That saying is very true, as I’m sure many who have loved and lost will tell you. I wouldn’t give up a single moment with my Peter and I’m sure dad feels the same way about mum.” She glanced down to the various rings decorating her fingers and smiled as she played with them. “Besides, you never know. Your great love may be closer than you think and maybe you will be luckier in love than me and dad.”

“We’ll see.” Stiles shrugged her shoulders and Dani decided that it was time to change the subject.

“How’s your studying coming along?”

“I’ve finished the books on Latin and am working on the ones on Ancient Latin, which I’ve also almost finished.” She told her sister with a proud smile. “I can’t believe how easy it is to study now.”

“Very good.” Dani told her with a proud smile. “Have you finished your school work?”

“Yes, I’ve been doing most of it at school during free periods at the library and reading ahead for all of my classes and doing whatever I get at the end of the day when I get home before moving on to your homework.”

“Very good.” Dani nodded with a smile. “As soon as you’ve finished reading the Ancient Latin books, I’ll teach you the spells that are done in that language. Once you’ve got those down, we’ll move on to Aramaic. On the weekends I’ll be teaching you self defence, Saturdays for defence without a weapon and Sundays for defence with a weapon. With the hunters crawling all over town, you’re going to need it. Especially with Scott trying to get us all killed by dating the daughter of the worst family of the lot.” She rolled her eyes.

“Once you get the hang of fighting with your sister, I’ll start teaching you how to fight against a werewolf. By that time, you should have also learned a decent amount of magic.” Derek told her from his seat beside Dani.

“Okay, great.” Stiles smiled slightly and stood from her spot. “In the meantime, I have more reading to do.” With that, she grabbed her book and left the kitchen.

Dani stood from her spot and began getting food out to start cooking dinner and glanced at Derek from the corner of her eye when he stood to help her.

“She’s your mate, isn’t she?” She asked and watched as his shoulders stiffened and threw her a concerned look before he relaxed again as she smiled slightly at him. “I’m happy for you both, really.”

“But?” He asked with trepidation.

“No buts.” She shook her head. “I really am happy for you, it’s just hard is all. I was two years younger than her when Peter discovered I was his mate, the age different between us was the same as you and Stiles. We never got to get past the dating stage, first because of the age difference as he wanted to wait until I was eighteen and then because of the fire. I like to think that we would be engaged by now, if not married already if the fire had never happened. But it wasn’t meant to be.” She turned to face him. “Don’t take a single moment with her for granted, you never know when it will be your last.” She told him as a tear rolled down her cheek that she wiped off with her shoulder before she went back to preparing dinner.

Once they finished preparing dinner, Dani left Derek to finish cooking dinner and headed up to her room for a shower and to change into her pjs.

When she came back down, she was dressed in a pair of lavender purple pyjama pants with navy blue polka dots, a loose grey t-shirt along with a pair of white socks and her ever present jewellery.

Her dad was sitting at the table when she returned to the kitchen and Derek was just serving portions onto the plates as Stiles filled glasses with everyones preferred drinks, a beer for their dad, a glass of sweet white moscato for Dani, a glass of water for Derek and a coke for herself.

Dani kissed her dad in the cheek as she made her way to her usual seat to the left of his at the table and thanked her sister and friend when she was passed her drink and dinner which was eaten in silence.

Once they were done eating, Dani gathered all of the dishes to rinse them and put them in the dishwasher before making herself a cup of coffee and heading back up to her room where she sat and read in silence in her living room.

“She went and saw Peter today, didn’t she?” Noah asked with a sigh and Derek nodded as Stiles looked between them.

“I upset her first.” Derek sighed, guiltily. “I asked if she would ever move on, told her that he would want her to be happy. She didn’t appreciate me speaking about him as if he were dead and teleported herself to the hospital.”

“Yeah, that would do it.” Noah sighed again. “I would react the same way if it was Claudia. She loves him too much. She was just shy of sixteen when she lost him and has never recovered from it. I don’t think she ever will unless, by some miracle, he gets up and walks out of that hospital room himself. Not to mention that Claudia had just died the day before and she was suddenly the matriarch of the Gajos line and an all powerful witch.”

“Is that why she stayed away at college for so long?” Stiles asked.

“Partly.” Derek nodded. “It hurt for her to be here so she tested out of high school and went straight to college and only came back to visit her family and to let Peter know that she still loved him and was waiting for him to get better.”

“And the other part?”

“For me and Laura.” He sighed. “I didn’t want to leave, not while Peter was still here and vulnerable to attack. But Laura was the Alpha and her word was law, so I had no choice but to leave. A beta wolf can not disobey their Alpha’s direct order and they cannot be without an Alpha or they will go feral like the wolf that’s here now. As the Hale emissary, Dani had to be where we were and Laura was too selfish to think of Dani’s needs and wants. While I’m sad that Laura had to die for it, I’m glad that we are back. Not just for Peter and you guys, but because this is Hale territory. We’re supposed to protect it and she abandoned it. Once I get the Alpha spark back, I will be able to bond with the Nemeton like Dani did but it would have killed Laura if she had tried or at the very least stripped her of her Alpha spark because she abandoned it.”

“So you won’t be leaving here again?” Noah asked, relief shining in his eyes.

“No.” He shook his head. “I couldn’t even if I wanted to.”

On Tuesday morning, Dani woke up in a slightly dark mood and she dressed to match. She could already tell that it was going to be a trying day.

Derek had gone to threaten Scott into not playing in the upcoming Lacrosse game the other night that she just knew he was going to ignore and he did, whilst trying to have him arrested for his sisters murder.

The sheriff laughed in his face an told him that he had undeniable proof that he wasn’t even in town at the time of the murder and then slapped him with a warning for slander.

She wore a pair of black skinny jeans with a black singlet tucked into them and a black leather jacket over top. She chose a pair of black leather calf high combat boots with a two inch heel along with her normal jewellery.

Her make-up was done in her normal natural tones with heavy eyeliner and light brown glossy lipstick that wouldn’t smudge. Her auburn hair was brushed out and left down in it’s natural wavy curls.

She grabbed her purse, phone and keys before heading down the stairs and into the kitchen to meet up with the others. She immediately made herself a coffee and sat down to eat a bowl of yoghurt, cereal and fruit for breakfast.

Her and Derek were going to have another training session in the preserve near his house today and then she was gonna lay some traps that would tell her if the Alpha went near the house.

They were there for the majority of the day training and coming up with plans to deal with both the hunters and the Alpha. She was just coming back from laying her traps when she heard a familiar voice and paused in the tree line.

“Did you see what I did last night?” Scott asked, suspiciously.

“No.” Came Derek’s flat reply.

“Can you at least tell me the truth?” He asked a little desperately. “Am I gonna hurt someone?”

“Yes.”

“Could I kill someone?”

“Yes.”

“Am I gonna kill someone”

“Probably.” Dani spoke up from behind him, causing him to jump and spin around to see her leaning up against the tree.

“Dani?” He asked, confused. “What the hell are you doing here with him?” He demanded, causing a scowl to appear on her face as she pushed off the tree and made her way to Derek’s sided.

“First of all, watch your tone. I do not answer to you.” She snapped. “Second, Derek is my oldest and dearest friend. We’ve known each other since the cradle.”

“Oh, so like me and Stiles.” He nodded in understanding, causing her to glare at him.

“No.” She snapped. “Not like you and Stiles. You two met in grade school. Derek and I literally shared a cradle. When Stiles speaks, you ignore her if it inconveniences you unlike Derek who respects my opinion and heads my warnings when given even if he doesn’t act on them.” It was silent for a moment as Scott absorbed her words with an incredulous expression. “He’ll even apologise when he’s wrong, something you wouldn’t know how to do.”

“Look, I can show you how to remember. I can show you how to control the shift, even on a full moon. But it’s not gonna come for free.” Derek told him, face impassive.

“What do you want?” He asked, despondently.

“You’ll find out.” Derek told him, finally finding his opening. “For now, I’m gonna give you what you want. Go back to the bus, go inside and see it. Feel it. Let your senses, your sight, smell, touch, let them remember for you.” Scott’s brow furrows in confusion and incredulity.

“That’s it? Just…” he paused. “Just go back?”

“Do you want to know what happed?” Derek asked in turn.

“I just want to know if I hurt him.” He brought out the puppy eyes that didn’t work.

“No you don’t.” Dani shook her head. “You want to know if you’ll hurt her.” Scott sighed at that, knowing it was true. “Lets get dinner then head back to the house.” She told Derek and both ignored Scott as they headed for the car.

They ended up having dinner at the diner in town as they discussed furthering their plan for Scott and finding the Alpha and the plan to bind him afterwards.

They were currently at a gas station in town, Dani was inside getting snacks and Derek was outside filling up his tank when a couple cars pulled in behind him. She had just finished paying for them and immediately called her dad when she glanced up and saw them threatening him.

“Yes dad, I recognise one of them as Chris Argent.” She told him as she approached them from behind. “They all have weapons and one of them just smashed the rear window of Dereks car. We also have video evidence of it, get here soon.” She told him as she stood beside Derek and glared at the hunters who looked ready to attack as she hung up.

“Who are you?” Argent asked as he took an aggressive step forward, she held a staying hand out to Derek when he tensed and stepped forward.

“Not someone that you want to mess with.” She told him and elbowed the guy in the face that tried to attack her from behind and swung a round house kick at Argent when he went to defend his goon. One of the guys got a lucky swing in with his bat before she turned and kicked him in the face, snatching the bat off him before smacking the last guy across the face with it before turning back to face Argent as he got to his feet again and held the first guy back.

“I don’t know who you are, but you don’t want to get involved with this.”

“No, it’s you who doesn’t want to get involved.” She snapped as she wiped some of the blood that was running into her right eye away. “You and your psychotic, murderous family will be history soon enough and I will be there to see it all happen. Your reputation will be in tatters by the time I am done with you, starting with having you all charged with the destruction of private property and the unprovoked attack on the sheriffs daughter.” His eyes widened.

“My family has never done anything to you, I don’t even know who you are.”

“Your family took a lot from me and you are gonna pay for it in full.” She told him with a nasty look on her face. “As for who I am, well you will find out soon enough.” She told him just as the first police car pulled up and her father rushed towards her with a few other officers behind him and pulling their weapons when they saw the destruction and the blood running down her face.

“Dani, are you alright?” He asked as he gently touched the bleeding gash above her eyebrow.

“I’m fine.” She told him. “They attacked after I got off the phone with you and one of them got a lucky shot in whilst I was dealing with Argent and the first attacker, but I won in the end.” She smirked in Argent’s direction.

His face had paled once he saw the interaction between the sheriff and his daughter before glaring slightly at her taunt.

Him and his men were disarmed and arrested for the destruction of private property, attacking the sheriff’s unarmed daughter, disturbing the peace and carrying a concealed weapon. It was gonna be a hefty price to pay to get them all out of this.

When Dani and Derek got back to the house, Dani immediately went up to her room to shower and change her clothes leaving Derek to answer her sisters concerned questions.

Once showered and dried, she pulled on a pair of thin black sleep pants along with a light grey crop top and an old dark grey v-neck of Peter’s and a pair of grey socks.

Her hair was brushed and pulled into a messy bun before she could deal with the rather large cut that ran from above her right eyebrow, through it and ended at the corner of her eye along with a rather nasty bruise that was starting to appear already. It probably needed stitches but she couldn’t be bothered with that so she pulled a box of butterfly stitches from her medicine cabinet and used them to hold the gash together before heading down stairs to find Derek waiting for her with a cup of coffee.

“Why wouldn’t you let me help you back there?” He asked as she took a seat on the armchair with her feet tucked up underneath her and her coffee held between both hands.

“Because they wanted you to fight back, but they weren’t expecting me or the consequences I bring.” She took a sip of her coffee as she watched her sister and friends expressions. “Tonight they attacked the sheriff’s human daughter, and her best friend. The arrest won’t last, but the charges will. David Wittemore is a friend of Peter’s who kept in touch with me after the fire, he still co-owns the law firm with him. If I pay him a visit tomorrow so that he can see the damage and tell him what happened when he asks, he can and will make their lives miserable. Not to mention that his son goes to school with Allison Argent and is very popular.” She watched as realisation dawned upon their faces.

“Did you you know that they were going to attack you?” Derek asked with a slight frown and she shook her head.

“No, I thought that they would see me and see that I was on the phone calling for back up and would leave.” She told him and he relaxed again. “That they attacked me was just an added bonus and their own folly.” She smirked.

“So they just made themselves public enemy no.1 to the local sheriff station and the towns best lawyer is about to become a problem as well.” Stiles smirked.

“Exactly.”

“Scott came by while you were in the shower, by the way.” Stiles told her and both Dani and Derek scowled for very different reasons.

“What the hell did he want at this time of the night?” She asked, voice sharp. “Does he not care that there is a police enforced curfew?”

“Apparently not.” Derek scowled. “He was here screaming and yelling about me being the Alpha and supposedly killing the bus driver and my sister and tried to convince Stiles what a horrible person I am and that I’m a murderer. We fought in the back yard and broke the fence leading to the preserve along with a few trees, he cried about me ruining his life, still so sure that I was the one that bit him before he finally realised that I didn’t and that it was the Alpha that attacked the bus driver, not me. Took him long enough, but I don’t think I was able to convince him to help me hunt him yet.”

“It would take something big to convince the selfish little shit to help you.” Dani stated with a scowl. “Like him or his little hunter girlfriend being in danger.”

“We’ll see what happens in the next few days.” Stiles said.

“Things are starting to pick up now.” Dani told her. “You watch your back and remember everything that I’ve taught you.”
