Summary:

Sky comes home to the Celestial Realm and immediately goes to find Sun. Is there something bothering her...? That's never good...

Notes:

HELLO!!! This is the first installment of my Modern Fantasy AU and also my first ever LU fic *laughing nervously*
I literally haven't written any fic since high school, so I am a little out of the loop on how this works anymore.
The world that this AU takes place in is something I have been working on for almost 10 years, so if you have any questions about something mentioned within or something isn't clear, please feel free to comment or reach out to me on my tumblr! https://www. /aisarcher

Work Text:

Another day, another successful venture to the mortal realm.

Sky smiled to himself in satisfaction at a job well done, even if it was a simple matter of checking on a concerning gathering of rebel demons. It ended up being nothing at all, not even worth the trip if you were to ask Sky. He had heard that rebel demon camps have shown signs of agitation and more movement than normal, but there have yet to be any incidents. He suspects that the Mediators just want an excuse to send him out on a mission with more violent intent… But now isn't the time to linger on dour subjects such as dusty old Mediators! Because in just a few minutes, he'll be crossing from the Mortal Plane to the Celestial Plane. Then he can finally see his Sun! It's been hours since he last saw her after all! Thinking about her bright smile and even brighter eyes has Sky grinning until his cheeks hurt. He pumps his massive wings even harder to get to the spot he knows the veil is thin enough to pass through with the right magic, eager to reunite with his love again. It isn't long until he feels the telltale tingle across his skin that accompanies passing from one plane to another. Sky closes his eyes against the sensation, letting it fall over him with a fond familiarity as he flies into the Celestial Plane in less than two wing beats. When he opens his eyes again, he sees home. Home… He feels his cheeks hurt again from grinning at the image of Sun smiling in his head.

Taking a sharp turn as he approaches the Angelic District of the Celestial Realm, he ignores the few gasps heard below as people inevitably notice the arrival of an archangel. Sky suppresses a sigh to himself. It isn't their fault that there's a certain reputation that comes with his status, not even to mention the title he received not 20 years after his initial creation. He still thinks the title is too ostentatious for someone like him. He just did what he felt was right and protected his loved ones and his home. Sky shakes his head a bit, refocusing on finding where Sun has wandered off to today. He makes a few lazy circles over her usual spots before getting a feeling that she would be near the Mediators. Making the appropriate turns to find his way to the alabaster steps leading up to the Courts of the Mediators, he scans the heads of the gaggle of angels milling about the square.

Then he spots what he's looking for. Blonde hair. Pink dress. Dark blue sailcloth in perfect opposite of the white one around his waist that she gave him oh so long ago. Sun.

Temporarily forgetting all decorum, Sky dives down toward her, calling her name in pure delight. "Sun!" he cries. As soon as she whips her head up to him, he realizes he's interrupted her in the middle of a conversation with several Mediators. He considers crashing into her anyways. Considers falling to the ground in each other's arms and laughing with her even as she berates him for such a careless landing as they did many times before he gained his title and before she could see the Threads of Fate surrounding them all.

He thinks better of it, but only at the last second.

A few Mediators have to take several steps back as he makes his landing directly in front of Sun, his wings not allowing for much room near her anymore and the gust caused by his sudden landing ruffling more than just feathers. One of them nearly loses an entire folder of what are surely very important documents. Her grin matches his instantly. Sky makes a mental note of how tired she looks and silently plans a quiet and restful date as soon as he can get her away from these politicking time-with-Sun-stealers… he'd come up with a better insult later.

"I'm back," he says, slightly breathless from what was essential a flight-based sprint to see her.

Sun giggles at him and oh, how he missed that sound. "I see that. Anything concerning?"

Sky shakes his head with confidence. "Nothing. I was worried it would be something dangerous since they sent me," he says loud enough that every Mediator that was swarming his Sun can hear how pointless this mission was, "but it was just a regular group of demons minding their own business."

"For now," a Mediator grumbles nearby.

Sky makes sure to cut his eyes over to them and gives his best smile. "For now," he repeats in a curt echo. Then he turns back to the much more pleasant face of his beloved. "Could I steal you away for a bit to give the report to you?" he asks with a conspiratorial look in his eyes. Sun, for her part, nods sagely, acting as the perfect professional.

"I would be delighted," she says, to the dismay of the Mediators who were clearly not done talking about nothing. Sun holds out her hand to him and opens her wings a bit, only pushing more of the Mediators away from them. Sky takes the hand faster than his mind can even process the words she's said.

His cheeks hurt again.

Together, they take off, leaving the Mediators sputtering but ultimately unable to say anything against an Archangel and a Fate Weaver. Sun's laugh comes like a sweet song to his ears, and he leads her away to a hilly field that they often escape to when the Mediators become too demanding. No sooner than their feet hit the soft earth, Sun turns and pulls him into a kiss that makes his face hot, and his heart do a funny dance in his ribcage. She pulls back, keeping her arms up around his neck, and Sky takes a moment to just take her in. He remembers their first kiss, here in this very field. He had been so nervous that his hands shook, and his voice wavered. But Sun, his beloved Sun, had merely taken those shaking hands in her own and placed the most featherlight kiss against his lips.

Sun's giggle brings him back to the present and he realizes he's just been standing there staring at her like an idiot for who knows how long. "Um," he says intelligently, "Wanna sit?" She nods and they settle onto the plush grass at the top of the hill they landed on. Sun sighs as she takes her seat, eyes looking up and away from them. He knows that look. She's seeing the Threads, observing them, and whatever she sees is troubling her. He hates that look. But he knows that if it's something she can discuss with him, she'll bring it up on her own, so he simply takes her hand in his and waits, trying to enjoy the scenery despite the ominous feeling in his gut.

When Sky looks back over at her and sees her eyes shining with barely restrained tears, he gasps in alarm and tightens his grip on her hand. "Sun…?" he ventures softly. She sighs again and that is definitely not good.

"You may have to leave again soon," she says after another moment of tense silence between them. Her voice is just as sweet as it usually is, but Sky finds that her words cut straight into his heart. "My only solace is knowing you won't be alone this time." Sun turns a watery smile to him, and he can't take it anymore. Sky pulls her into one of his best hugs, arms around her shoulders and one hand gently on the back of her head. The wetness he feels on the shoulder of his shirt tells him that she's finally let her tears fall. Gods above he wishes he could take this ache from her and shoulder it in her stead. "You must come back to me in one piece," she insists as firmly as she can with her voice wobbling as much as it is.

Who is he to deny his Sun? He nods into her hair and places a kiss to her temple. "I will always come home to you." Sky pulls away just enough for her tear-filled eyes to meet his own. He feels his own eyes sting, but he pushes through with what he hopes is a warm and encouraging smile. "Always," he repeats, insistent.

Sun hesitates, searching his eyes (or maybe his Threads) to assure herself of what she wants to believe is the truth. Then she nods and smiles again. It's a small, fragile thing, but it takes some of the weight off of his heart. Sky softly wipes her cheeks with his calloused hands, and she manages a shaky giggle and a murmured tease at his expense for being so "mushy." It lightens both of their hearts. Their wings touch lightly as they lean against one another and gaze out at the rolling field for as long as they can get away with.

Sky sends a silent prayer to Light and Fate that he will get to be with her here again many more times.
