Chapter 1: why are there fish on my desk?

Chapter Text

Unavoidable.

Some things in life are so consistent that they form into an inevitable. A prime example of this, was Satoru Gojo attending jujutsu high. Not only had he been born in to a prestigious clan, but he had also been cursed with both the six eyes and the limitless technique, both of witch instantly sealed the fate of the young boy before he could even fathom how this would essentially sculpt his future.

Suguru Geto attending Jujutsu high, however was not something that had been set firmly in stone. This came from chance, a mere stroke of pure luck, especially considering his lineage of non sorcerers. It was practically one in a million, with all odds stacked against his favour. That being said, Suguru meeting Saturu was neither coincidence or un-inevitable, it was something more, something people like to call : fate.

There meeting has been written in the stars, a long lost language, spoken centuries before either boy had taken their first breath. A true symbol of yin and yang, bound to one another in each and every lifetime by an invisible red thread, drawing one to the other like a moth to a flame. Satoru Gojo was that flame, a beacon of light, and Suguru Geto was his moth, his darkness and chaos in the calm. They belonged together, a perfect fit, two halves, only ,made whole by one another.

The summer that year had been brutal, the kind of heat that dries your throat up painfully when you sleep and seems to evaporate all intelligent thoughts. The latter is how recent events had come to pass. During lunchtime seven teens from jujutsu high had vanished. They had snuck of campus and -if asked- had 'accidently' found themselves on the outskirts of the city at a summer festival, uniforms untucked, bags slung over shoulders lazily or left behind entirely.

"you do realise Yaga is goin'a go grey when he finds out about this" chimed in the resident smoker of the group, cigarette burning away in one hand and phone in the other, taking several quick snaps at the various stalls they walked past. " that's fine Shoko, that way he'll be just like Gojo-sama!" the sudden quip from the short brown haired boy to her left made Shoko snort a laugh, pulling her girlfriends arm close as she laughed, spreading to the purple haired girl like wildfire, until the 'victim' of said joke piped in "Haibara-chan!!! I thought we where friends?" Gojo pouted, faking a hurt expression as he looked back at the others, he promptly stuck out his tongue childishly before spinning back on his heel and continuing on his self asserted job of 'leading the way' before he shrugged and voiced his own opinion on the matter " first of all, that's if he finds out-" a muttered 'witch he will' came from the long haired male beside him, something that was heard but simply ignored by the other " and second, he only cares cuz he's gonna be running the joint soon enough" with that said, Gojo want back to sucking on the obnoxiously colourful lolly pop- that he'd insisted to buy on their arrival to the festival- and he continued heading towards his goal: the huge circular ride towards the back of the field.

The ride itself wasn't anything particularly special, it was a huge open metal circle with seats along the outside, facing inwards and a large open metal floor in the middle, making it almost look like an empty Udon bowl. It was one of those rides you always got to these types of events, the type that had no seatbelts, was painted with loud colours and covered in various lights and speakers. It also looked like it was held together by tape and hopes.

Out of the seven, only four ended up going on the ride, Shoko was unable as she refused to distinguish her cigarette, seeing it as a waste, Utahime made it very clear she had no intentions on boarding the 'death trap' and despite Gojo offering to pay for her ticket, Mei declined on grounds of not wanting to 'ruin her hair'. This left Gojo, Geto, Haibara and a rather unenthusiastic Nanami, who had probably only agreed due to his brunette best friend begging for them to sit together, otherwise he would have most likely opted out as well. In fact Nanami had been against the whole idea of skipping class, and had only agreed when he saw the practically animated way his best friends eyes lit up at the idea of all of them going to the festival together. The things one does for those they care about.

Once the four of them had purchased their tickets they climbed onto the ride and claimed there seats, Nanami on the outside, arm against the metal railing, then Haibara, then Geto and lastly Gojo, and of course the rest of the seats where taken up by various strangers. Soon enough, everyone had been seated and the ride was off, spinning clockwise with gradually increasing speed, as well as bouncing around like a monster truck. At some point Haibara called the others attention, pointing over to three teens who had managed to lay down in their seats, using the gravity to stick themselves against the wall. This gave a certain individual an idea,

"Oi! watch this!" Gojo shouted bringing the others attention back to himself as he decided to lean out his seat and stand up, managing to stay up due to the spinning force the ride had created, this was followed by an obnoxious cheer of success, something that was promptly cut short when the ride jolted, switching to spin anti clockwise in a matter of seconds. The sudden shift caused the six eye user to go stumbling backwards, heading straight for the metal floor below him "Satoru!!" a familiar voice barked out and just before his skull met with the floor a strong hand was tightly gripping his wrist and pulling him up and back to the safety of their seats. After a moment the initial shock disappeared and he looked directly at his friend, heart practically pounding out his chest from the adrenalin and face a bright crimson from embarrassment. He could no longer think about the ride, he was lost staring at his best friends face with eyes still blown with shock. Had Geto's hands always been so rough and his grip so strong? Had they even held hands before? He couldn't remember.

"Your such an idiot, you know that Satoru." Geto rolled his eyes and nudged the other with his shoulder before standing up, fixing his uniform as he did. When had the ride stopped? "oh and close your mouth you look like a fish "that comment was able to bring Gojo back out his thoughts, standing and following behind him and the others "your just jealous because I looked so badass" just as they got of the rides exit he hear Geto reply "next time remind me to just let you fall" and before their bickering could escalate further they where cut off by an overly hyper Haibara

"Ay Gojo-sama, we should go play the prize games, see who can win anything!" the brunette had obviously been oblivious to their conversation, however the idea of a challenge had peaked his interest. " Now that sounds like a great idea! come on we'll grab the others and get going."

It didn't take long for the four of them to walk back to where the girls had been waiting, the tallest of the bunch waving and shouting obnoxiously to draw their attention "Come on! it's game time!! prepare to loose weaklings" Gojo flicked his finger against Utahime's forehead with the final comment, an attempt to wind the girl up, witch worked and the entire walk towards the game stalls was narrated by their bickering, right up until the group separated, wandering of to various stalls. Naturally Gojo was drawn to a booth covered in ridiculously large plush prizes, pulling Geto along with him. The game was a simple one; you get five darts and you have to pop four balloons for the top prize, three for a medium one and two for a small prize, and Gojo had set his eyes on a particularly grand prize. It was a large white dragon plush with yellow eyes, it reminded him of Geto's rainbow dragon, and sure enough that meant he was going to keep playing till he won that dumb dragon plush, unable to walk away from the challenge he'd set himself. Over 6000 yen later, and said goal had been achieve, he turned to his friend, prize in hand and loudly proclaimed his victory " For you, my lady" he said in a mock gentlemanly tone, bowing and presenting the dragon towards the black haired male, who in return cracked a smile and accepted the offering, tucking it under one arm "why thank you my good sir" he bowed back, simply enjoying the freedom he got from rare moments like this. Moments when the higher ups weren't there, scrutinising their every move, simply because they where the strongest. "I suppose its my turn to win something for thee in return, shall we" he held his arm out and sure enough Gojo interlocked his own and off the two went, stumbling in fits of laughter onto the next game.

------

"What exactly are we supposed to do with them?" it was a valid question from Haibara, sat against the bench, head cocked towards the two plastic bags that sat before them all. Over two hours they had spent playing prize games, and for the most part they had done well, Haibara had a small capybara plush in his hand and had filled his bag up, with several instant noodle packets he'd been able to win. Shoko had simply been the camera woman, however, around her left wrist was now a small purple bracelet, adorned with several charms and matching the woman to her side who had clearly been playing crane like games. Utahime has been the luckiest, not only winning matching bracelets but also winning a 50% off voucher at a local noodle bar and a bunch of sweets. Mei had no interesting in wasting her money so much like Shoko and Nanami, she was more of an observer, occasionally chiming in when someone's 'aim was of' or if they where ' doing it wrong'. Either way it was safe to say that the two with the most prizes where Gojo and Geto, who had somehow gotten in an unofficial competition trying to win the other more gifts, and it was that competitiveness that lead them there with two shopping bags full of various plushies, snacks and trinkets as well as two beta fish, currently housed in separate plastic bags and placed on top of the table they had all crowded around. In fact, said fish where currently the main focus of their discussion, or more specifically what to do with the two fish.

"I dunno, feed 'em worms?" Gojo's answer was about as much help as everyone had expected. He was the one who thought it would be a good idea to pursue winning the fish after getting it in his mind that it was something he really wanted. "but you guys gotta agree, they look just like us". The teens hands gestured back and fourth between himself, Geto and the two fish, one being fully white and the other pure black, matching both boys hair. This irrelevant comment earnt him a smack on the upside of his head, Geto hasn't even been shocked at the others own inability to think things through. What where they gonna do with those fish? Either way that had been the sign for them to call it a day at the festival. That and the fact that Yaga had most defiantly noticed their absence, two hours after classes had resumed.

The walk back to Jujutsu high had mostly been full of throw back conversations, members of the group talking amongst each other about what they had gotten up to, or reminiscing on their favourite parts, for the most part it was full of laughter, playful shoves and harmless banter. They even stopped a convenience store, buying two glass bowls that would serve as their new aquatic companions temporary home. Everything had been fine, until they re-entered their school grounds, where they unfortunately had to part ways, Nanami and Haibara said their goodbyes before scurrying of to wherever they should of been, next was Mei, who technically hadn't even been in today, she had simply joined the adventure on account of her own personal boredom, of she went, heading back home with a curt wave and a nod of her head. Shoko and Utahime also parted together, leaving Gojo and Geto stood against the door alone.

"Remind me what part of this is a good idea Satoru?" the long haired male asked as they walked back to their sensei's class, knowing at this time in the day he would be in a meeting with the higher ups, he slid the door open and entered, quickly shoving both the prize bags on top of a desk before turning back to the other who was currently setting the two glass bowls down, before running to fill a jug with water from the class sink. " It doesn't have to be a good idea to be a fun one" the white haired male shot back as he finished filling both bowls of water before emptying the fish into their individual homes, taking a step back to admire his handy work "let's go grab something to eat 'kay?" he flashed a bright smile, moving to grab his own prize bag from the desk "haven't we already missed enough today Satoru?" the head tilt was paired with a silent 'you're going to get in trouble' look that he new all too well, then again he supposed they already where going to get an ear full from their sensei regardless, might as well do it with a full stomach, he shook his head "fine, but you're paying" and just like that Gojo practically buzzed with joy, grabbing Geto by his wrist and pulling him down the corridor of towards their freedom. When they where back outside his pace slowed, returning to a normal pace and he lifted one hand up, gesturing behind them as they walked towards the gates, and as if planned a roar came from inside their classroom "GOJO!!!!". It seemed Yaga had found his gift. Both teens hunched over laughing to themselves as they carried on walking, knowing full well they would be in for a screaming match come the following morning, but right then in that moment as they descended the steps towards the city together it didn't matter, nothing did, nothing other than the warmth that grew in both their chests.
