Gabriel’s Saving Grace

Summary:

After giving up his powers and moving into the bunker with Sam, Dean and Cas, Gabriel wants to bake a cake as a surprise for Sam for their anniversary. However, due to no longer having his powers, baking a cake isn’t as easy as Gabriel remembered. Luckily, his boyfriend comes to the rescue

Work Text:

“Fuck!” Gabriel was stood in the kitchen, surrounded by baking equipment as he tried to work out how to use the scales. After three failed attempts, he dropped the bag of flour onto the counter, causing some of the contents to spill out, before he shoved the scales away

Hearing the shout, Sam rushed in. “Gabriel? Hey, what’s wrong?” He asked gently, concern etched all over his face, noticing how Gabriel’s knuckles were white from where he was gripping the counter 

“I hate being human!” He shouted, frustration evident on his face and in his voice as he put his head in his hands. “Before, I could just snap my fingers” he sighed, clicking his fingers to demonstrate his point. “But now I can’t. I’ve got no grace, no powers… I can’t do shit. I’m useless”

Sam’s face dropped slightly as he tentatively moved closer. “Don’t say that, you’re not useless”

Gabriel scoffed

”I’m serious” Sam said as he came to stand next to Gabriel, gently pulling his hands away from his face. “You gave up your powers to save us, that’s not useless”

Gabriel looked away, causing Sam to sigh softly before he gently grabbed Gabriel’s chin and turned him to face him. “You are the furthest thing from useless”

Gabriel swallowed thickly, his eyes watering before he quickly brushed away any tears that had fallen. “I can’t even bake anymore” he sniffled. “I just wanted to make something nice but I can’t figure out those bloody scales”

Despite the small upturn of his lips at the corners, Sam didn’t laugh. Instead, he smiled softly, his hands coming up to gently cup Gabriel’s face, his thumbs softly rubbing circles over his cheeks. “I can help you, if you’d like?” 

Gabriel swallowed thickly again, and Sam knew there was something Gabriel wasn’t telling him. “Hey” he said softly, pressing their foreheads together. “Talk to me”

Gabriel sniffled and took a deep breath. “I just wanted to make you a cake for our anniversary” he whispered quietly. “And I couldn’t even do that right… I just wanted to make today special”

Sam’s heart broke at his boyfriend’s sadness. “Oh my love” he said gently before he softly kissed Gabriel’s forehead. “That is so sweet, but I didn’t need a cake to make today special. All I need is you”

“That was cheesy, even for you” Gabriel laughed slightly, his voice a little shaky 

Sam chuckled, pulling Gabriel to his chest. “Yeah, but you love it”

Gabriel looked up at Sam. “You’re such a doofus, you know that?”

”Yeah, but I’m your doofus” Sam said grinning, causing Gabriel to laugh

”Yeah” Gabriel murmured softly, resting his cheek against Sam’s chest. “You’re my doofus”

Sam wrapped his arms tighter around the former archangel, holding him close, burying his face into Gabriel’s hair. “You know, I meant what I said earlier” he whispered. “Powers or no powers, archangel or human, I love you Gabriel. I don’t care if you can’t make a cake out of thin air anymore or if you can’t teleport at will, you still love with your whole being. You gave up your powers to help save Cas, to ensure that The Empty could no longer enter heaven, that it could no longer hurt anyone. You became human to save us. Because of you, Dean and Cas are together” 

Sam took a deep breath before continuing. “We’re together” Sam whispered as he pulled back slightly, cupping Gabriel’s face again. “You’re my partner and do you know what I see when I look at you?”

Gabriel shook his head as his eyes watered again

”I see my whole world, my future” Sam murmured softly. ”You’re my endgame Gabriel”

“Really?” Gabriel asked quietly, his voice thick with emotion

“Really” Sam chuckled softly. “So you see, it really doesn’t matter if you have powers or not, because you’re perfect to me. So, if you need help, with anything, ask me love, okay? Because I will always help you. Always”

Gabriel smiled softly, sniffling slightly and nodded as Sam wiped away tears from his cheeks

”There’s that smile I love” Sam whispered, causing a light blush to dust Gabriel’s cheeks. “Now, how about we make that cake and whilst it’s baking, we get into some comfy clothes? Then we can order pizza and have a proper movie night for our anniversary”

Gabriel smiled softly as he leaned up onto his tiptoes and kissed Sam. “That sounds perfect”

Sam happily kissed Gabriel back before pulling away slightly, chucking.”You’re so short” he teased

Gabriel swatted Sam’s chest. “No I’m not. You’re just abnormally tall”

Sam laughed as he stepped away and grabbed the scales

“Hey Sam?”

“Yeah?” He replied as he weighed out the flour

“I love you”

”I love you too angel”

As they baked together, Gabriel couldn’t help but think that maybe this anniversary wouldn’t be so bad after all

Okay, after being told by multiple friends that I should start writing fics, I finally decided to bite the bullet and do it. As this is my first fic, well, one shot, I don’t think it’ll be fantastic, but I thought it was very cute. I will get better the more I write, so please bear with me! Anyway, enough rambling from me.
