Chapter Text
Love is an illusion we create to escape our bad feelings. However, it eventually shatters and leaves us with a broken heart. I can't trust anyone except my raven, Bran.
Two years ago, I was taunted by three villagers as I returned home with a deer I had hunted. This was a daily occurrence. The group leader was Kai, and the other two were Victor and Damien, who had bullied me the most since childhood.
People in the village heard of my powers and created stories claiming that I had hurt or even killed others with my telekinesis. One day, as Victor tried to push me, Bran flew by and pecked him in the eye, causing him to scream in pain. The others quickly reacted and attempted to attack Bran. Instinctively, I punched Victor, but Damien grabbed me from behind. Bran then pecked the back of Damien's neck, and I hit my head back against his, making him stumble and drop me.
By that time, Kai had run away, leaving his friends alone and defenseless. It was then that Bran and I became inseparable. I gave him his name, and he never left my side. I felt grateful to him, as I owed him my life. As I looked at the other two, I pitied them for having a weak leader.
After my parents disappeared, I vowed never to trust another human being. I mostly kept to myself and lived in a cave with Bran. I had no clue where my parents were or if they were even alive. The last time I saw them was when I was six; they took me to the cave where I now live and then disappeared. I haven't left Silvermere in hopes of seeing them again, believing that if they looked for me, they would come here. Unfortunately, children my age would taunt me; once, I became so upset that I wished I could throw rocks. To my shock, the rocks flew up and hit them, causing them to scream and cry. That incident marked the beginning of the rumors about me.
But as I continued to live on my own, I realized my telekinesis and moved rocks and trees as a small practice. I knew I wasn't ready to handle more. But I was in awe of my power. I felt a little bit safer, knowing that if I were in grave danger, I could use my power. As an orphan living alone, I was already an outsider to the villagers, and once my powers became known, their judgment intensified.
The king sent guards to summon me, and before I knew it, I was being trained to fight like a soldier. He ordered me to master my powers so that I could serve him in exchange for money. Although I never wanted to leave the kingdom, hoping to see my parents again, the king insisted I go and promised to pay me if I obeyed. Otherwise, I would be hanged for disobedience. I obeyed, and although the payments were small, I would buy what I needed. My first purchase was a blanket, then tools for hunting, and occasionally a new piece of clothing. I only bought what I could afford, and it was never enough for a cottage, which I didn't want anyway. The cave was my home, and nobody in the village liked me. In truth, the cave was my only place of safety.
Today, a knight was sent by the king to collect me and summon me to the castle. Knowing I would have to travel, I packed my pouch with necessities: a blanket, my hunting weapons, and an old light blue dress. Bran rested on my shoulder as I wondered where I would go next. I told Bran to stay quiet, considering the king barely tolerated having animals in the castle.
"Ah, yes, right on time!" Ultarion, the king, said as he clapped his hands. He looked down at me from his throne, with his wife Katherina sitting beside him, her dark blue eyes glaring at me.
"Your highness," I replied, bowing. I hated seeing his dark brown eyes, and bowing was one of the few moments of relief I had. He and his wife were both much older, with long gray hair and wrinkles that showed their age.
"I have another quest for you. It’s a long one."
Aren't they all? I thought to myself as I looked up at him, waiting for him to continue.
"I need you to go to the kingdom of Fortundra."
"The kingdom of many riches?" I asked.
"Yes, there is a war—a war I must prepare my men for," Ultarion replied with a sigh.
He wants me to gather intelligence on the enemy.
"Your task is simple—see what they have," Ultarion continued, standing up and walking slowly toward me.
"And report back to you," I said.
"Yes, I have prepared a map for you. My advisor will give it to you on your way out."
"Is he dangerous? The king?" I asked.
"I believe so; you must stay hidden," Ultarion ordered.
Notes:
I have decided to make this a series. I'm thinking maybe 2 or 3 novels? Maybe one day I'll publish this an an original story on Amazon & Barnes & Noble. It just depends.
Chapter 2: A New Ally
Chapter Text
I had been walking for hours and was starting to feel tired, but I wanted to go as far as I could before I had no choice but to rest for the night. I glanced down at the map that had been given to me. I had traveled to many places, yet I had never visited Fortundra in my life. However, I had heard stories about it being the richest kingdom in the world. I wondered why Silvermere and Fortundra were at odds and what Fortundra had in store for me. Feeling uncertain, I frowned down at the map.
Bran croaked, and I looked up to see him perched on my right shoulder. I chuckled softly at that.
"I feel lost; I blame Ultarion," I said. "Do you know where we should go?" I joked.
He responded with a slightly louder croak.
"Yeah, me too," I sighed in defeat. Suddenly, I heard loud stomps approaching, and I winced as it sounded like they were coming from a horse. I went on guard as I felt Bran tense, his feet tightening lightly around my shoulder. I grabbed my dagger, ready to fight any potential threat.
"Whoa, boy!" I heard a loud male voice call out as the horse was only ten inches away from me. I slowly backed away, eyes narrowed as the strange man dismounted.
He wore a white button-up shirt with the sleeves casually rolled to his elbows, giving off a practical, ready-for-action vibe. A canvas strap with leather details crossed his chest, paired with a wide brown utility belt carrying pouches and a holster that housed a gun. His trousers were olive-brown and fitted, with reinforced patches at the knees for durability, tucked into tall black leather boots. Dark brown, curly hair framed his face without surpassing his neck.
"And you are?" the stranger asked, gazing at me with large, deep-set dark brown eyes. He raised a thick, well-defined eyebrow.
I said nothing, studying him intently. He looked to be around my age. I noticed his strong jawline, slightly rounded chin, and a prominent yet harmoniously balanced nose. His full lips complemented his strong features well.
He was very attractive, which was too alarming for me.
"I'm sorry, did I offend you in some way?" His voice was concerned, and his brow furrowed.
I shot him a look, raising an eyebrow. No matter what I thought, I knew I had to stay on guard; he could easily be a Fortundra spy.
"Is that your pet?" he asked, nodding toward Bran, who croaked in response.
I stayed silent, still studying him.
"My apologies, I'll leave you—"
"What is your name?" I asked sharply, keeping my dagger raised.
"Whoa, I-I'm Poe," he stuttered, eyes widening as he raised his arms in a gesture of surrender. "Poe Dameron, and you are?"
"Rey," I replied, still aiming the dagger at him.
"Pleasure to meet you," he said, clearly lying as his voice trembled, his eyes remaining wide.
"Funny, I have the dagger."
"And I have a gun."
I blinked at his response. He had a point, but I wasn’t going to admit that and give him any satisfaction.
"I won’t hurt you. I saw you and thought you looked lost."
"I'm not lost," I lied.
"Are you sure?" Poe asked, chuckling softly.
"I can handle myself; I have a map."
"Where are you going?"
"That’s a need-to-know basis."
"Perhaps if you told me, I could help?"
I stared at him, searching for any signs of aggression. He sounded sincere, but sincerity can be feigned. I considered my options. I could kill him just in case he was an enemy, but I had to weigh the possibility that he might genuinely help me. It was a risk I had to consider taking.
"I need to go to Fortundra," I finally admitted.
"I’ve been there before," Poe replied, smiling weakly.
"You have?" I asked, slowly lowering my arm and widening my eyes in excitement.
"Yes, I grew up there—born and raised."
Maybe he wasn’t so bad after all.
"Is something wrong?"
"Can you take me there?" I asked.
"Of course," he responded. "You and your raven can come with me."
"His name is Bran."
"Well, you and Bran can follow me and my horse."
"Thank you," I said, smiling warmly and giving a quick nod.
"Of course," he replied, smiling widely.
"I'm sorry I aimed my dagger at you," I apologized.
"It's okay," he laughed. "Not my first time."
I knew I had to take this risk, and I made a promise to myself: if he tried anything, I would kill him.
Chapter 3: Campfire
Chapter Text
Poe and I had been searching for a camp area in the woods for half an hour. I sat on a log, trying to calm my racing thoughts about our next move. Poe was gathering wood while I agreed to watch over his horse, which I now knew was named Max. Bran was perched in a tree above me. I sighed, wrapping my arms around myself to ward off the cold.
"I'm back!" Poe exclaimed as a shadow approached.
"Do you have a rock to make a fire?" I asked, watching him drop one on the ground with a thud.
"No, I didn't think to get one," he chuckled softly. Though it was dim, I could tell he was wearing a cheeky grin.
"Ha ha, very funny," I retorted, rolling my eyes as I got to my feet and looked down, searching for a rock. "We can use my dagger to start a fire."
"No need."
"What do you mean? You just said—"
"Watch this."
I instinctively looked up at him, waiting for his next move. He lifted his left hand, and suddenly fire appeared at his fingertips. I winced at the sight, but I could see his smug grin as he looked at me.
"How did you—?"
"I have the power of elements," he replied, throwing the fire at the wood. "I control air, water, fire, and dirt."
"I thought telekinesis was the only power that existed," I whispered in disbelief, looking down at the fire.
"What was that?" he asked.
"I didn’t realize there were others like me."
"Do you control elements too?"
"No, I didn’t mean— I have telekinesis," I corrected, meeting his gaze.
"You can move things with your mind?" Poe asked, his eyes widening in shock.
"Yeah, but I didn't know there could be other powers. I thought I was the only one."
"Nope, hate to break it to ya, but there are others like us."
"Is it common?"
"No, it's kinda rare. I've met only one other gifted being," he said, shrugging lazily.
"Are there other types of powers such as ours?"
"As far as I know, there's telekinesis," he explained, pointing at me. "Then there are those who control dirt, fire, water, or air," he continued, gesturing to himself. "Some can even become invisible if they choose."
I winced at that, sitting back down on the log and staring at the fire.
"What is it?" he asked, concern in his voice as he walked around the fire and sat beside me.
I stayed quiet, not knowing what to say.
"It's okay if you don't wanna talk about it."
"Growing up," I sighed, turning to face him with a frown. "I always felt alone and got harassed as a child. One day, when I got so mad, I mentally wished for rocks to hit the other kids, and it actually happened."
"You became an outcast."
"Yes, rumors spread, and I became feared. But the king in my country..." I trailed off, shrugging.
"What happened?"
"Let’s just say he takes advantage of my power."
"I'm sorry you're dealing with that."
"I have to see how this king is in Fortundra."
"So that's why you're traveling there? He sent you?"
"Pretty much," I replied, nodding slowly.
"Oh... I see," Poe responded, putting the pieces together in his mind.
"Why did you leave Fortundra?"
"I wanted to travel the world; I've always wanted that."
"I'm sorry I let you—"
"No, no, it’s okay. I have family there."
I need to go home as soon as I can.
"What is it? Did I say something wrong?"
"No," I answered, shaking my head. "It's just that I need to go back home too to see my family. I miss them," I admitted, forcing a small smile.
Chapter 4: A Month Later...
Chapter Text
Poe and I traveled day and night to reach Silvermere. I was anxious to get home as quickly as possible, and my mind was racing. As the nights passed, I struggled to sleep. Did, do my parents miss me? Are they okay? Did they return to the cave? Would I find enough information to make Ultarion happy?
"Hey, you’ve been quiet lately," Poe said, pulling me back to reality as I looked at him. He was eating the fish he had caught while we stood by a river.
"I just miss my parents, that's all," I replied, hoping he wouldn’t press the issue. I was fortunate that he never asked much about my background.
"Where are they?"
Just my luck, he asked. I thought to myself as my expression fell. I wanted to disappear right there on the spot.
I sat in silence, thinking about what I could and should tell him. Sure, it had been a month since we began our journey together, but I had trust issues and had never talked about my parents with anyone.
"The last time I saw them, I was a kid," I finally admitted, biting into my fish.
"A kid? I thought you said you wanted to see them again when you come back?"
I swallowed a small piece of fish and blinked. "They left me by a cave back in Silvermere," I murmured softly. "I never saw either of them again, and I don’t remember anything else or why they left."
"Didn't you ever write or even receive letters?"
"No."
"No kind of—"
"No," I snapped, glaring at him. "I need to return soon before they come back and can’t find me."
"But what if..." His voice lowered to a whisper, and he trailed off. I knew what he wanted to ask without wanting to hurt me, and I wondered if he felt like he was at a loss for words.
"They're not," I said firmly, my voice grew harsher. I instantly regretted it. "I'm sorry, it’s just..." I trailed off, unable to find the words as I stared at the river.
"I'm sorry I started to ask—"
"It's not a crime to be curious," I assured him with a chuckle. "I’d probably be curious too if the roles were reversed."
"We've got fifty miles 'til we reach Fortundra," Poe said, changing the subject.
"Thank you for everything, Poe," I said sincerely, smiling warmly at him.
"Of course, I'm honored to have met you," he responded, smiling back at me.
"Perhaps, if it's not too much to ask, you could take me back home?"
"Sure, but why would you want me to do that?"
"So I don’t get lost."
"Oh," he gasped, making an O shape with his mouth as his eyes widened in realization.
"Yeah," I replied softly, still looking at him.
His smile became weak, and I wasn’t sure why. I secretly enjoyed his company and had learned so much from him. Even Bran had taken a liking to Poe, and I dreaded the thought of parting ways. But I had to return to the cave and wait for my family, and I was sure he wouldn't want to stay there with me. I could never ask him to do that. He wanted to travel and deserved to continue his journey. I would only hold him back, and I considered him a friend, maybe not my best friend. But a friend I wanted to support.
Chapter 5: Seeing Him
Chapter Text
Finally, we arrived in Fortundra. As I took in my surroundings, holding onto Poe’s waist while he led Max to our destination and Bran flew above us, I couldn’t help but admire the beauty of the kingdom. Flowers of various types adorned the buildings in the village, and people were dressed in rich garments of many colors. I had never seen such exquisite clothing, even in Silvermere when Ultarion and Katherina flaunted their wealth.
"How close are we to the castle?" I asked, looking straight ahead.
"About five minutes. Why?" he replied.
I felt a rush of urgency to get home to my parents.
"Is this because of your quest?" Poe inquired.
"Yes," I answered.
I found myself wondering many things about the king: What was his name? What did he look like? What was he like? Despite my dislike for having to travel so far for information, my curiosity about the king of Fortundra was undeniable.
"So, when you get there," Poe began, his smile evident in his voice, "what do you plan to do to avoid getting caught spying on him?"
"I'll dress up as a maid and blend in," I replied as he stopped Max. I quickly jumped off, and Bran flew onto my shoulder, but I frowned.
"Bran, I can't let you go with me inside," I said, signaling for him to perch on my index finger as I raised my left hand.
"I'll watch him for you," Poe offered, making me look up and smile. I raised my hand again, signaling Bran to go to Poe.
I gave Poe and Bran a smile and walked toward the castle door. I knew it wouldn't be easy, considering knights were stationed at every corner of the castle. Taking a deep breath, I prepared myself and exhaled as I took a step closer.
"Stop!" a knight yelled, pointing his sword at my chest.
"Hello," I gulped nervously, staring at the large sword.
"State your purpose!" the knight demanded in a harsh tone.
"I am a new maid. I was summoned."
"King Ben did not mention you."
His name is Ben? Noted.
"What do you want, girl?" he pressed.
"I was a last-minute addition; I—"
"What is the meaning of this yelling?" a deep voice interrupted as a tall figure stepped through the door.
The man had a distinctive and unconventional facial structure that set him apart from anyone I had ever met or seen. His face was long and slightly rectangular, with strong bone structure and a prominent jawline. One of his most defining features was his large, curved nose, which added character to his face. His deep-set, intense dark brown eyes were brooding, framed by thick, slightly arched eyebrows that were furrowed. His medium-sized lips appeared fuller due to his strong jaw and pronounced philtrum. He had thick, dark brown hair that reached past his shoulders.
He was attractive and nothing like I had imagined. My heart pounded, and my mind raced. What would he do to me if he found out I had lied to his knight?
I felt like I was in deep trouble.
"Your Highness," the knight said, quickly bowing. "This lady claims she was summoned here."
The king's gaze shifted to me, and I tried to remain calm, refusing to give myself away as I stayed silent.
"Is what the lady says true?" he asked.
"No," Ben replied, keeping his eyes locked on me.
Without a second thought, I turned and began to run for my life as I heard Ben yell for me to stop. I quickly heard footsteps behind me. Keeping my eyes forward, I ran for what felt like an eternity.. Keeping my eyes forward, I ran for what felt like an eternity.
Chapter 6: Captured
Chapter Text
Adrenaline coursed through my veins. I had to get away from him, even if it was the last thing I did. I was in the woods, still running, out of breath, when I heard footsteps behind me. I needed to hide before Ben saw me. I couldn't risk anything; I needed to find safety.
Before I knew it, I was lifted into the air, frozen and unable to move. Panic washed over me as I was forcefully turned around and saw him looking up at me, his right arm raised. I felt like this was how I was going to die, and that my killer would be someone I barely knew. I would die alone, and I had to accept it. At least Bran wouldn’t be alone. I wished I weren’t alone, but I couldn’t bear the thought of Bran seeing me like this.
"Who are you?" Ben asked, raising an eyebrow. His voice was oddly soothing, and I felt a surge of disgust.
"If you're going to finish me off, just do it now!" I shouted, glaring down at him.
"I'm not going to kill you. I'd never do such a thing."
"But holding people hostage is your style?"
“Hold on,” he scoffed, shaking his head. “You went onto my land and lied to one of my knights.”
"Well, I—I was..." I trailed off, unsure of what to say. My tongue felt dry, and all I wanted was to disappear.
"You were...?"
"Scared and lost!" I shouted nervously.
"You were scared and lost?" Ben echoed, sounding unconvinced as he raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, I'm new in town, and I've heard a lot about you."
He lowered me to the ground slowly, giving me an uneasy look. I knew he still didn't believe me, so I needed to sound more confident and convincing.
"I'm sorry I lied," I said, forcing a small frown.
"You are an interesting girl," he replied, looking down at me and then back up into my eyes.
"And you are an interesting man."
He didn’t say anything, but he took a step closer, maintaining eye contact. I stepped closer to him as well, studying him while waiting for any sign of aggression. I didn’t trust him, and he probably didn’t trust me either, but I wasn’t going to reveal that. Not now.
"I'm sorry if I scared you with my telekinesis," Ben said.
"So... you have that power?" I asked, already knowing the answer from the moment I was in the air.
"Yes, it's a power very few possess," he explained, as we stood merely an inch apart. "But I hear there are others with other powers."
"It's all true," I whispered, giving a quick nod. I had to think quickly. I could push him away and hurt him.
"Why are you so calm about this?"
"I... I have telekinesis as well," I answered, looking up into his eyes. I knew it was risky, but I had to gain some trust.
"If it’s all right with you, you are a guest."
"A guest?"
"Yes, at my castle."
"But why?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. In that moment, I realized I had screwed up. He was luring me to my death.
"For dinner and perhaps a room to stay for the night."
I stared at him, speechless, as he gave me a warm smile. I felt even more disgusted than before. This man was charming and attractive, he had to know that and it all seemed too perfect to be true. If he wasn't going to kill me, what was in it for him? There was no such thing as a selfless deed. I had to figure out what he wanted so I could get home safely.
"What do you say?" Ben asked, lowering his voice into a whisper.
"I accept," I replied quickly, forcing a wide smile.
Chapter 7: Girl In The Mirror
Chapter Text
I wasn’t particularly excited about having dinner with a snobby king while strangers eyed me curiously, silently judging my dirty, tattered clothing. However, I had been sent to gather information on the enemy's lines, so I needed to play my part and gain his trust. To my surprise, the king provided me with a bedroom that was half the size of my cave. I had never slept on a real bed before, so this would be an interesting experience. What amazed me the most was the beautiful and comfortable clothes he gifted me.
The room even had a bathtub, something I had never seen in my entire life. I usually bathed in the river by my cave. If Ben asked, I’d deny it, but I felt like I was in heaven; I had never been pampered like this before. I took a long, relaxing bath because I was that excited, but I wouldn’t admit it.
"This could be a trick to lower my guard," I murmured to myself as I gazed at the sparkly ocean-blue dress I was wearing that reached down to my ankles. I was amazed by it and staring at my reflection in the mirror. I could barely recognize myself. Just then, I heard the door open and winced, turning to see a maid smiling warmly at me.
"Dinner is ready, but the king insists you take your time," the maid said as she entered the bedroom.
"Thank him for me. I'll be down in a few moments," I replied, giving her a quick nod.
Chapter 8: Dinner With The Enemy
Chapter Text
I sat beside Ben, feeling nervous and anxious. I wasn't quite sure what to say or do. Normally, I would have remained undercover, sneaking into rooms to find weapons without being spotted. But this time was different. I had slipped up and had no choice but to go with the flow. I vowed never to let myself slip up again and to get home as soon as possible.
"So, where are you from?" Ben asked as I took a sip of my wine.
I blinked awkwardly. I couldn't tell him I was from Silvermere. I didn’t want to mess up again.
He laughed. "Is that a need-to-know type of deal?"
"I'm from everywhere," I joked, setting my wine glass down and forcing a wide smile as I looked at him.
"Do you travel a lot?"
"Yeah, I just love to travel. It's so much fun."
He slowly nodded in response, and I couldn’t tell if he believed me or not.
"Yeah, that's just me."
"You have so many mysteries," he said, laughing. "Will you ever tell me your secrets?"
"I could, but then I’d have to kill you afterward," I teased, trying to hide how serious I truly was.
He laughed heartily in response, and I was relieved he didn’t seem to suspect anything. I stared at him, plotting ways to sneak into the area where he hid weapons. I needed to act fast, but now that I was on Ben's radar, I had to plan differently.
I cursed myself in my mind as we continued to eat dinner. What surprised me was how quiet he had become. I wondered how he was plotting war against Silvermere. His kindness toward me felt odd, and I didn’t trust it one bit. I wouldn’t let his charm blind me.
"Why are you still being nice to me?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at him.
"Because I wanted to be nice," Ben answered, staring deeply into my eyes.
"There’s no such thing as a selfless deed."
"I believe there is."
"Do you feel good about yourself afterward?"
"Well... yes, because I—"
"See, there is no such thing," I cut him off.
"Have you always been so cynical?" The sarcasm was obvious in his voice.
I rolled my eyes. "Ha. Ha. Very funny."
"Don't you believe in happiness... or love?"
"Love is an illusion we create to escape our bad feelings."
"So you have given up on it," Ben says it as if he's convinced.
"It eventually shatters and leaves us with a broken heart."
"But don't you have family?" Ben asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"I love my parents, but I don't believe in being in love," I replied with a frown.
"You've never—"
"No, never. I don’t plan to either."
"Why not?"
"I don't trust anyone."
"What about your parents?"
"I trust them, but..."
My tongue felt like it was tied in knots, and a familiar pain hit me fast and hard with no warning. I couldn’t break down—not now, not ever. Especially not in front of Ben. I could not show weakness in front of him.
"We don't have to talk about it if you don't want to," he quickly assured me.
"Thank you, Ben," I responded.
"Of course," he replied.
I smiled at him, feeling a sense of relief at his words. I hated to admit it to myself, but he seemed genuine. I didn’t trust it one bit, but he sounded sincere enough to almost convince me. Almost.
Chapter 9: Awkward Glances
Chapter Text
I snuck out of the castle to find Poe and Bran. Since I had caught Ben's attention, I needed to ensure they were safe and aware of the new plan's details. After searching for ten minutes, I spotted a campfire, and my gut told me it was them. To be cautious, I held onto my dagger and tiptoed silently.
“What is that sound?” I heard a voice mumble, which sounded like Poe's. To be safe, I hid behind a tree.
Just breathe. Don’t say a word.
“Rey, is that you?” Poe called out, and I sighed softly in relief.
“Yeah, it’s me,” I answered as I took ten steps forward, revealing myself. Bran was resting on Poe’s right shoulder.
“How did it go? Did you find anything?” he asked.
“No, I was foolish and caught Ben's attention.”
“You know his name?”
“Yes, I met him.”
“You're on a first-name basis?” Poe gawked.
“I may have had dinner with him,” I replied nervously, gulping.
His eyes went wide at that. “You did what?”
“I know; I screwed up, but so did he.”
“What do you mean?”
“He's lowering his guard,” I began to explain. “He even gave me my own bedroom… which I don't trust.”
“How do you know if he’s aware or clueless about a spy from Silvermere?” Poe asked, crossing his arms.
“I don’t, but I’m on guard. I have to act like a friend to him.”
“Well, it’s your fault.”
“I know,” I hissed, lowering my voice. “Keep your voice down.”
“I just don’t want you to get hurt.”
I raised an eyebrow in confusion. “Why do you care about that?”
“I care about you—your safety,” he replied quickly, his face going pale. “That’s it. I care about your safety.”
“I’m sorry I got you into this mess,” I said, frowning at him.
“It’s no trouble at all.”
I furrowed my eyebrows.
“Okay, so it is a bit of trouble, but it’s worth it.”
"But why? What do you get out of it?"
"Adventure, I guess."
“Thanks for your honesty.”
“No problem.”
“For now, you and Bran must stay hidden,” I said, glancing at Bran and smiling warmly at him. “I need to fix this.”
“I’ll keep Bran safe for you,” he replied, and I looked back at him.
“Thank you,” I said simply and leaned in to kiss him on the right cheek, quickly pulling away as I realized what I had done.
Did I just kiss him on the cheek?
Poe blushed deeply, his mouth falling open slowly.
“I’m so sorry; I don’t know what I was—”
“It’s okay,” he softly chuckled. “Really.”
Don’t act like it’s nothing; I just kissed you!
He stared into my eyes as if he were studying me, and I wasn’t sure why. That made me anxious as I tried to think of something to say.
“I don’t know what got into me,” I finally admitted.
“It’s no big deal,” he insisted with a laugh.
"I should go, before anyone notices I'm gone," I responded as I started to walk backwards.
"Rey, wait!"
I turned around and ran as fast as I could, not looking back as I wanted to crawl into a hole and die there.
Chapter 10: Angela
Chapter Text
My eyes opened, and I sat up quickly, startled by the unfamiliar bedroom. After looking around, I sighed in relief as I remembered where I was. I got to my feet and got dressed, feeling the need to plan and act on whatever came to mind. I still had to see what Ben was up to and why Ultarion considered him a significant threat to Silvermere.
“Rey?” I heard the same maid from last night call out as I finished getting dressed. I quickly met her ocean-blue eyes and noticed how perfectly her light blond hair was styled in curls. She looked to be around twenty years older than me.
“Hi—I'm just about done,” I replied awkwardly, pointing at my messy light brown hair and chuckling.
“I can help you with your hair,” she offered.
“No, no, it's okay. I wouldn’t want to trouble you—”
“It’s no trouble at all. Please, allow me,” she insisted.
“Alright,” I sighed. “What’s your name?”
Her eyes widened in surprise. “My name?”
“Yes, I would like to know your name,” I said, giving her a quick nod.
"No guest has ever asked me that."
I looked at her, waiting for her to answer my question.
“My name is Angela,” she replied, taking a brush and quickly beginning to work through my hair. I flinched as she pulled through a knot.
“Ouch.”
“You don’t brush your hair a lot, do you?” she asked.
“I always keep it in a ponytail.”
She laughed. “Well, don’t your people have brushes where you live?”
“Yes, but—” I flinched again as she continued to detangle my hair. “Where I live, only the rich can afford such luxuries.”
“Well, Ben made sure you have everything you need in this room.”
I blinked in surprise at this, staring at myself in the mirror.
“Yes, and I was assigned to watch over you,” Angela continued.
Does anyone besides him know I lied to him?
“He told me all about you and said I was the best for the job.”
“Of watching over me?” I murmured softly.
“Yes, but do promise me to keep a secret, won’t you?”
“Sure, what is it?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.
“He is fascinated by you.”
My eyes widened at that. I couldn't understand or even believe it. Why me? I lied to him. I am still lying to him.
“He never said it, but I can tell. You have sparked an interest in him.”
“Why? I lied to him from the first moment we met.”
“Men are known to love a good mystery, I suppose.”
I cringed at her words. If he only knew I was a spy, he'd regret ever sparing my life and kill me.
Chapter 11: A Walk
Chapter Text
I studied Ben throughout breakfast, listening to every single word he spoke and taking in everything. I hated to admit it to myself, but I continued to enjoy his company and that part scared me to the core. I even almost forgot I kissed Poe on the cheek. I tried hard not to think about it. I had to remain focused on my mission. Get Ben's trust, gather information, and return home. That might be hard, but I was going to be successful in time and be focused, unattached. He was my mission, nothing else.
Ben gave me a warm smile as we walked outside together. "Would you like to join me for a walk in my garden?"
"You want my company, your highness?" I asked, batting my eyelashes.
"Please, call me Ben."
"But it is so informal, I could never do such a thing."
"I suppose lying is alright," he began to say as I heard the teasing in his voice. "But addressing me by my name, you could never." He let out a fake loud gasp, putting his hand on his chest.
"I wasn't sure if we were on a first-name basis," I said. You're on a first-name basis? I heard Poe's words echo in my mind as I got a sense of deja vu.
He chuckled softly. "You are not of Fortundra, nor are you a stranger to me now."
"It is odd, I never addressed the king back in--" I froze, stopping myself from continuing that. "I just never addressed royalty so... personal, I suppose."
"Ah, now that surprises me."
I sighed in relief as it seemed he didn't catch me almost slipping up.
"What is it?"
I chuckled. "Have you always been clever with a sharp tongue?"
"I guess so."
We walked for a few moments before I saw a garden with flowers with red petals. I saw in awe at the sight as I rushed to them and bent down to smell them, making me smile as the scent washed over me, and I couldn't get enough of the flowery scent.
"Do you like roses?" I could hear the smile in Ben's voice.
I furrowed my eyebrows in surprise. "These are roses?"
I could hear his footsteps and from the corner of my eye, I saw him standing next to me. "You have never seen one before?"
"No," I sighed in defeat as I stood up, meeting his gaze.
"Do they not have roses where you live?"
"I have heard of them but I never grew any."
His eyes widened as if he were shocked by this.
What is he thinking?
"Really? Why not if I may ask?"
"I would use my money for things I needed," I answered, lazily shrugging.
"Well, I suppose I can gift this to you," he quickly responded as he bent down, picked one out from the ground, and extended it towards me.
"I could never take such a lovely thing," I replied, my heart racing as he chuckled softly. I wondered if my face went red because I could imagine it being as red as the rose in his hand.
What is so funny? He is laughing at me!
"It's yours, I insist."
"Thank you," I whispered softly as I took it, admiring it.
"Besides I have many more.
I took a petal off and began to eat it. I had heard rose petals were edible and I promised myself if I ever found one, I'd taste a petal. Ben stared at me, giving a warm smile. I wondered if he was secretly judging me or if he knew of this fact as I did. The taste was satisfying. It was sweet, fragrant, and had a hint of honey. I felt odd eating it but still enjoyed it.
I swallowed it and blinked. "Umm... have you ever tried a rose petal before?" I cringed as I quickly realized I sounded sarcastic.
"Yes, I sometimes eat a petal or two," Ben said, nodding.
"Tastes like honey," I replied.
Chapter 12: Hate Him
Chapter Text
Ben is way too charming for his own good, and I can't stand him for it. I almost fell for the rose trick, but I didn't. I won't let him charm me, even if he gave me a dozen roses. I'm not a fool who can be swept off her feet. I am strong; I can resist him. I do resist him. So what if he is attractive and witty? I won't let him trick me and ruin my mission. My family is all that matters, and I feel like I have already been away too long.
Poe agreed to meet up in the woods in secret. This surprised me a little, considering I had kissed him on the cheek. It meant nothing to me, and I was sure he would abandon me and Bran at that moment, but he didn't, which confused me. I just hoped nothing would be awkward between us. Yes, he was attractive and had been a good friend, but that's all he was—a friend. We would never work as anything more.
"So, how is the spy thing goin' for ya?" Poe asked as we walked alone in the woods, while Bran rested on my shoulder and Poe walked with Max.
I sighed in defeat. "It's been hard, I admit, harder than I thought."
"Why? Is the king unkind to you?"
"No, he's been kind... too kind, in fact."
He chuckled at that.
"What amuses you?" I asked.
"The king is too kind?"
"Honestly, you sound amused by this," I replied, glaring at him as I began secretly plotting his murder. "Are you?"
"A little," he answered. "I thought you were supposed to gather information for your king."
"I am, but Ben makes it so difficult; he's trying to charm me with his handsome smile and wit."
He fell silent and looked down at the ground.
I furrowed my eyebrows, confused by his silence. "What is it?"
"Nothing, I just think you may care for him."
I snorted and rolled my eyes in annoyance. "You spend a lot of time with him."
"I have to earn his trust so I can get what I need."
"But do you care for him?"
"No," I quickly answered. "I hate him."
"You do?" he asked, surprised.
"Deeply, in fact."do?" he asked, sounding surprised.
I nodded. "Deeply, in fact."
Chapter 13: Letter To Ultarion
Chapter Text
Your Highness,
I hope this letter finds you well. I apologize for not returning as soon as we both had hoped, but the King of Fortundra is aware of my presence. Therefore, I must gain his trust and uncover what he is hiding from you. I beg for your forgiveness. I promise to gather the necessary information and return to Silvermere in due time.

I sat there with the pen in hand, sighing in defeat as the image of Ben flashed through my mind. I disliked feeling overwhelmed by so many emotions at once: fear, a longing to go home, confusion, stress, and guilt. I had never felt guilt during a mission until meeting Ben. Although I still did not completely trust his kindness, it was all he had ever shown me, and I couldn’t understand why.
I took the letter and stood up from the edge of the comfortable bed I had been given. Going to the window, I looked out at Bran as I folded the letter in half and said, "Please make sure you send this letter to the King of Silvermere at once." I placed it in front of him and smiled weakly.
Bran croaked in response, and I nodded.
I rolled my eyes. "At this rate, it will take months until I have what I need."
He looked up at me silently.
"I want to go home; I really do." I sighed. "I miss my parents dearly."
He let out a soft croak.
I laughed, shaking my head. "I do not care for Ben. That's not why I'm taking so long. I hate him. I really do. You and Poe are wrong."
Bran nodded and took the letter in his mouth, giving me another look.
I forced a wide smile. I swear if ravens could talk as humans do, Bran would laugh at me. I thought to myself.
Bran blinked his black eyes at me.
"Hurry back; I shall miss you, my dear friend," I said, lightly patting his head.
Without hesitation, he flew out the window, carrying my folded letter as I watched him blissfully soar into the starry night sky, silently praying for his safety and a quick return.
