Chapter 1:
“Andrew in drag”
(But its our gay boy Argos)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mr Plant sat on his porch, the darkness of his void surrounding him. The only light that could be seen was a distant light from a lamp on the street.
Mr Plant himself looked years older, the years definitely taking a toll on him and his appearance. The colour of his petals were duller than in his youth, appearing greyer. His actual face was a different story; however, the tears that were permanent on his face were brighter, and his smile crooked now.
After a while of sitting on the porch, Mr Plant felt a gentle hand on his shoulder. Bothering to turn his head, he saw his daughter, Floofy, looking down at him. Floofy had grown into a fine citizen of the void after Mr Plant had adopted her all those years ago. Her cloud head rested softly on her shoulders just like a graceful cloud should.
It had been true Mr Plant hated kids, but since his mistake had led him to years alone, he had adopted Floof. She had grown on him and accepted the role as a father, making her one of the only children, he couldn’t bring himself to hate.
Now she stood before him all grown up. Looking at him with what only he could assume was a worried expression.
“Dad…are you alright?”
She whispered, preserving the silence of the void.
Before Mr Plant could sign anything to his daughter, two younglings (yes, I’m calling them younglings, hush) ran out of the house giggling. A young boy with a cloud head like his mother ran out towards him, and a smaller one, a girl with a clock head, followed him. Mr Plant’s hyper grandchildren.
They ran up to Mr Plant. The clock head girl sat beside Mr Plant, looking at her grandfather in awe, still amazed how someone would be this old, while the cloud-headed boy tried and was failing to bite Mr Plant's petals.
Mr Plant looked at the boy with mild annoyance while his petals twitched slightly. Floofy, seeing his pulled her son away from her poor dad’s head.
Chronos, the young clock-headed girl, chose this moment to speak.
“Grandpa? Why are you so old?”
Her brother, hearing his, also stopped struggling like a feral cat in his mother’s arms and also spoke.
“Yeah! Why are you such an old man?”
“And grumpy?”
Chronos added. As the two siblings started to pester poor Mr Plant with questions like children do, one after another.
“And silent?”
“Grandpa, do you still have all your teeth?”
“You must be like 100 or something, grandpa! Are you?"
“Grandpa, why are you all alone?”
“Yeah, why are you all alone? Why don’t you have someone like Mum has dad?”
All these questions made Mr Plant want to bash his grandchildren’s heads in. It reminded him of how much he hated small kids and how lucky he got with Floofy being such a well-behaved child.
It took a moment for the last two questions to finally register in Mr Plant's brain before he froze.
Floofy, seeing this, finally decided to say something and tried to whack the back of her son's head in who was in her arms, but her hand went right through him.
“Enough, you two. You’re probably giving your grandfather a headache.”
The two children shut up immediately at their mother's command, looking towards their grandfather, who was staring at his hands, wondering if he should sign something or not. Finally making up his mind, he did.
[You’re last question, Cumulus…for why I’m alone. I wasn’t always alone. I did have someone once…]
To this, the children watched intensely at their grandfather's signing. While Floofy nearly dropped her son from shock.
“WHAT?!”
She exclaimed, while never heard from her father before. She just assumed he had always been alone. To her exclaimed both children hushed her invested while Mr Plant continued to sign.
[Someone named Argos…It’s a pity she does not exist, a shame he’s not a fag…]
Floofy looked offended at her father's choice of words, while the children were excited about this grandfather lore drop.
[The only girl I ever loved was Argos in drag…]
Mr Plant paused as if reliving a tough memory; the guilt and sadness he had kept hidden in his soul finally came up, making signing it tougher.
[There is no hope of love for me from here on; I'll go stag.
The only girl I'll have ever loved is Argos in drag]
Mr Plant's petals drooped a little as if remembering that night.
[I don't know why I even went. It's really not my bag. Just thought it might be funny to see
Argos in drag]
Mr Plant let out a sigh, finally letting himself imagine the moment again when he saw his beloved Argos.
[The moment he walked on the stage, my petals began to wag. Wag like a little wiener dog for Argos in drag]
The children giggled at the word wiener finding it finally, but not understanding the gravity of what their grandfather was confessing. Their mother finally sat down on the porch next to her father, shocked by this knowledge.
Cumulus, finally getting restless in his mother's lap, climbed off it and went to sit next to his sister, wondering if he should annoy her or not. Missing the next part of what his grandfather was signing.
[I've always been a ladies' man, and I don't have to brag. But I'd become a momma's boy for Argos in drag]
Mr plant sighed, thinking about his late mother, but his heart clenched more at the black-haired man with many eyes.
Cumulus, hearing his grandfather sigh, realized he had missed something, turned back to look at him.
[I'd sign away my trust fund, I would even sell the TV-]
The kids gasped when their grandfather signed about his TV since they knew how much he loved it and hated replacing it.
[-If I could spend my misspent youth with Argos in drag. So, stick him in a dress and he's the only boy I'd shag. The only boy I'd anything is
Argos in drag]
Chronos tilted her clock head and looked at her mother curiously.
“Mummy, what does shag mean?”
She asked innocently.
Only to get no verbal response from her mother as she hushed her daughter.
[I'll never see that girl again. He did it as a gag, I'll pine away forevermore for
Argos in drag]
Mr Plant finally stopped signing, his already permanent, tear-stained face feeling heavier. He rested his hands in his lap once again, interlocking them together. Wishing he were holding hands with that beautiful man covered in eyes instead. But he knew he had messed all those years ago. He had been too afraid. And now he was paying the price for it…
Suddenly, Mr Plant felt a weight at his side. Turning to look, he saw his daughter hugging him, trying to give him some form of comfort he knew he didn’t deserve but he said nothing.
Looking to his other side, he saw his grandchildren. Cumulus has grown bored again and was now trying to bite his sister.
Mr Plant allowed himself to close his eyes. This wasn’t the life he had wanted, but he’d live it. It had been an alright one. But he made a silent promise to himself. Next time, if he was ever reborn, he’d find Argos, and they’d be happy.
