Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter Text
It’s a rare thing really, for a show cliffhanged for a decade and a half to suddenly get revived from its grave.
When PASWG first aired in 2010, it left audiences saddened for years with a shocking cliffhanger that seemed destined to remain unanswered. Then, in 2025, New PSG arrived, fifteen years later, bringing with it new creative and storytelling choices, updated production and characters, a very different cultural context, and the heavy weight of fan expectations.
Fans who loved the original season spent years imagining what a continuation might look like, while newer viewers came in with fresh perspectives shaped by today’s TV standards. Comparing these two seasons isn’t just about how Studio Trigger handles the continuation, but also about how the show adapts to a new era of television and whether it lives up to the hype of its long-awaited return. In this essay, I’ll be breaking down the differences between the two seasons in terms of story, performances, and overall impact just to show you how well New PASWG holds up against the original.
For context, I entered the fandom just recently (around when S2E6 aired), so unfortunately I didn't experience the 15-year wait. So I might have some different views than you guys who actually did have to wait. Scream at me if you don't like constructive criticism, I criticize because I have a mixed feeling of love (wanting the show to succeed) and frustration (not meeting my expectations) for this show. I really need somewhere to write all my thoughts about this, and since I don't have a diary, I'm going to use AO3.
Each chapter will analyze a different aspect of the show:
- Story, Structure and Plot Progression (editing it a little because of that final episode)
- Themes and Tone (maybe the same as well?)
- Characters and World Building (how do I add ramie in this?)
- Visuals and Music (not yet)
- Reception (not yet either)
To not confuse both seasons, in this essay I'll call season 1 PASWG, and season 2 New PSG. This is so you'll understand better which one I'm referring to in a sentence. By the way, if you haven't read the tags, this will be kinda spoilery for both, and it's not beta read, so expect some mistakes and errors here and there. Feel free to critic back in the comments if some of my opinions don't suit you.
Anyways, read at your own pace. (chat believe me I'm working on this)
