A Big Fat Greek Wedding Plus Bats

Summary:

You are cordially invited to the wedding of

Annabeth Frederika Chase

and

Perseus Jackson

---------------

Bruce, I wasn’t going to invite you but I’ve been reliably informed that Grandma Agatha will haunt me if I don’t. Seeing as you haven’t attended any family weddings and none of the many funerals this family has had in the past decade or so, I’m not expecting you to respond to this letter. If you do read this, pick up your damn phone once in a while, at least then we can let you know when the next funeral is.

Go to the crows you bastard,

Annabeth Chase

Notes:

Bruce had an aunt Agatha in the new earth era. She was in two comics and Thomas Wayne's sister.

Chapter Text

Jason stared down at the invitation in front of him in confusion. It had been taped to the front door of the manor, which should have been impossible given the security measures in place around the manor. But here it was all fancy and shining, taunting him on the door.

The security cameras gave him no answers. The cameras could pick up movement at speedster speeds yet nothing had been caught on tape and there was no tampering evident. One second the door was unadorned, the next the invitation graced the door with its presence.

All Jason had wanted was to borrow a book from the family library, now he had an unwanted mystery on his hands. He decided the best solution was to outsource the problem. He took a photo of both sides of the invitation and then sent it to the family group chat. It was no longer his responsibility.

Chapter Text

Annabeth entered her apartment and kicked off her heels with relish. She still wasn’t used to professional business dress after years of t-shirts and armor. Annabeth had hoped that co-owning her own architecture firm and being her own boss would allow her to dress more casually but the gods were conspiring to keep her in heels and pantsuits.

Annabeth knew that as an attractive, blonde twenty-three year old she didn't fit most of the world’s image of a serious business owner or architect but it was ridiculous how little respect she was given in the mortal world based on her physical appearance. She was a veteran of two wars and the Architect of Olympus but in the mortal world no one took her business or ideas seriously unless she was dressed for a boardroom battle against corporate CEO. She hoped that one day her work in the mortal world would supersede her appearance but that day wasn’t today.

As Annabeth made her way further into the apartment, she could smell something baking in the oven and could hear Percy singing along to some AC/DC song.

“Hey, I’m home,” she called out as she entered the kitchen to find Percy mixing up some sort of batter. She came up behind him and gave him a hug and a kiss, “What are you making?”

“Estelle has a school bake sale tomorrow but Mom and Paul were busy, so I’m making a batch of blue cookies for her to take. They’ll be stopping by later to pick the cookies up. Also I’ve lasagna in the oven that should be ready when they get here.” Percy said with a smile.

“Sounds great!” Annabeth agreed while stealing the mixing spoon to sample a small piece of dough. Percy let her get one nibble before reclaiming the spoon.

“How was your day? Did you finalize the plans for that library in Yonkers?” He asked while portioning the dough on the baking trays.

Annabeth leaned against the counter and replied, “Good, the city finally decided on the final designs so now all we need is permit approval before construction can begin.”

“That's great! I know how hard you worked on that project. We’ll have to visit it together once it’s built.” Percy complimented with a grin. Just then a timer went off and Percy removed the lasagna from the oven. “While this is setting, do you want to toss the salad or clear and set the table?”

“I’ll take the table,” Annabeth responded. She loved how normal their lives were in these moments. No gods, wars, or monsters, just her and Percy exploring domesticity together without the world bearing down on them.

The table was frankly a mess. It was covered in her crafting supplies and no area had escaped unscathed. Annabeth had spent the whole weekend creating their wedding invites by hand. She had designed, embossed, and handwrote the calligraphy on each invitation personally because no one else could match her vision. She finished the final one at two am last night in a crafting frenzy. And Percy, knowing she had an early meeting this morning, had dragged her off to bed before she could even think of putting everything away.

Now hours later the mess stared back at her. Annabeth began to clear the table of all of her stuff but one thing was missing. “Perce, where did the wedding invitations end up? I don’t see them on the table?”

“Um, you told me to send them out this morning? I sent them by Hermes Express around noon.”

“When did I say that? I have no memory of that!”

“It was just after you woke up. You made me promise to send them today. Although you did say that before your morning coffee so maybe that's why you don’t remember," Percy offered.

“Yeah, that’s probably the reason I don’t remember." During college Annabeth had discovered that if she mixed the correct ratio of coffee and nectar, she could pull all-nighters without consequences in the morning. Now she rarely went a morning without her special concoction. The downside was that she depended on the drink now and was functionally still asleep until her first sip after a late night. ”Don’t listen to me pre-coffee anymore. I clearly can’t be trusted.”

“I’ll always trust you, Wise Girl, coffee or no coffee.” Percy said with a mischievous grin abandoning the salad prep in favor of giving her a forehead kiss.

“Wait! You sent all of them through Hermes Express? Even the ones going to mortals? What about the guests that don’t know about the gods. Hermes isn’t exactly subtle.” Annabeth asked in a rush.

“Yeah, I sent all of them that way. I mean how many mortals not in-the-know did we really invite?” Percy asked a frown overtaking his features. “I can only think of Paul’s parents on my side and I doubt they’ll notice the unorthodox delivery. They’ll just be happy to be invited. Do you have any mortals you're worried about?”

“I only invited one family ignorant of the gods and that’s the one I’m worried about. You remember me ranting about my Dad’s cousin?”

“The one that you’ve never even met and has completely ignored your family for like the past fifteen years and won’t even pick up the phone for a funeral?” Percy dutifully recited. “Why’d you even invite him, he sounds like an asshole?”

“I wasn’t but apparently my grandma Agatha, who is long dead by the way, found out about the wedding and she wants me to make more of an effort to reach out to family or she’ll keep haunting me. She keeps showing up in my dreams and talking about seating plans.”

Percy nodded in understanding, after all he had experienced vision of the dead in his dreams before, same as her. Then he asked the question that was driving her insane, “If she’s dead how’d she find out about the wedding?”

“I don’t know!” Annabeth exclaimed in frustration, “I had Nico tell Beckendorf and Silena about the wedding but no one else. Grandma Agatha isn’t even in the same afterlife as them. I had Nico look for her in Hades’s realm and Magnus check all the Norse afterlife realms. She’s not residing in either one! We have no idea how she is getting her info but Nico confirmed that she has the power to keep haunting me. Hence the invitation to my bastard of a cousin.”

Percy appeared to be overwhelmed and speechless by the end of her rant. “You know, I’m going to ignore those implications for now. But look on the brightside, the invite has been sent so no more dream hauntings! And if everything you told me about the guy skipping out on family obligations holds true, he won’t even respond to the invite and we’ll never have to think of him again.”

“That’s what I was planning for but Hermes has probably screwed up everything all ready. My Dad’s cousin and his family aren’t ones to leave a mystery alone.” Annabeth said with a sigh, “I’m pretty sure the invitation’s magical delivery and my less than diplomatic post script will be enough to grab their attention.”

“Who exactly is your cousin? You seem to know him and his family pretty well for never meeting them.” Percy questioned. “I don’t think you’ve ever told me their names?”

“He and his kids are pretty famous, meaning that I have a lot of public data points to extrapolate from. Once you figure out their deal, it's not hard to predict their actions. My dad’s cousin is Bruce Wayne, billionaire, philanthropist, and notorious playboy extraordinaire.” Annabeth explained with a grimace.

“Mister Richie McRich is in your family tree? I was not expecting that.” Percy appeared to be processing this new info and aligning it with what he knew about her father’s family.

Suddenly there was a knock on their front door. Percy moved to go open the door while saying, “Bruce Wayne, uh, we can work with that. The dude is a complete airhead according to the papers.”

Annabeth followed him to the door, “If he was what the paper showed, I wouldn’t be worried. Unfortunately, that's just his cover, Bruce is also Batman and a founding member of the Justice League.”

Percy just stared at her frozen with the door halfway open. Sally, Paul, and Estelle were all standing on the other side watching Percy with concern.

Percy slowly started to reboot. He turned to her in shock and whisper shouted, “Batman is your fucking cousin! Batman is coming to our wedding!?”

Estelle took that moment to push through the door.

“Mom!” she called out in a sign-song voice, “Percy said a bad word!”

Sally looked between her children and Annabeth before sighing in defeat.

Thank you to everyone who has bookmarked, subscribed, given kudos or commented on this story! Your interactions mean the world to me!

I'm also taking suggestions on what Annabeth and Percy's wedding should look like. Who is in the bridal/groom parties? Who is officiating? Is it modern or ancient Greek inspired? Should gender norms be thrown out the window? What are they doing for the bachelor and bachelorette parties?
