Work Text:
Gaty had been crushing on Two for the past two years of high school. They’re currently in their senior year, and Gaty knew she had to confess soon. They were friends, but Gaty knew they didn’t see her as any more than that.
They were polar opposites, Gaty was an unpopular loser who had four friends– Saw, Pin, Ice Cube, and Two. On the contrary, Two had lots of friends. From Tree, Clock, Winner, and TV, to X, Donut, Book, Four, and even Bell.
Still, it was worth a shot.
Gaty had stayed up until 2 A.M. reading and reviewing a letter that she began to write at 8 P.M..
The next day at school, her heart raced every second. When she saw Two, she felt like throwing up. She couldn’t speak to them and when they tried to make small talk with her in the lunch line, she quite literally ran away.
She knew she couldn’t do this.
Two was popular. They hosted many parties, had too many friends to count, and was constantly involved in the drama that came with that. If someone mentioned Two, everybody would know who that person was talking about.
Gaty? Who's that? Even with a vivid description, nobody knew her.
She went the rest of the day without giving the note to Two. She couldn’t. She knew she’d just get rejected anyway. But.. if Two didn't know who wrote it, maybe something would be different? She wasn’t sure what, but she thought it was worth a shot.
Gaty had a very distinct handwriting, so she would need to rewrite the letter on a separate sheet of paper with a different hand writing.
So, she got a blank sheet of lined paper and began to write.
“Two, I love you. If you find out who I am and want to be in a relationship, I’m willing to explore myself further and fix my flaws. I admit I have flaws, but everyone does. If anything happens, then I’m willing to discuss it with you to see if it’s fixable. Every time I talk to you, it makes my heart flutter and my day so much better. Seeing you makes me happy and I want to at least try things out with you. Of course I don’t want to instantly consider ourselves partners, but more of just experiment.”
She grinned as she folded up the paper, but suddenly paused. She quickly added a small note at the bottom.
“I understand if you don’t want to, I know you haven’t had the best experience with relationships in the past and I completely understand that. I don’t want you to feel forced to do anything.”
She sighed as she folded it up, put it in an envelope, and sealed it with a kiss. Immediately after, however, she realized that was probably too much.
The next day, during the switch between first and second period, Gaty went to Two’s locker and slipped the note in. The hallway was crowded with other students, and nobody noticed what she had done.
The entirety of second and third period, she spent trembling with nervousness. Both her and Two had first lunch, meaning that she could watch to see how Two reacted to the note.
She sat down at her usual table with Saw, Dora, Coiny, and Pin. Conversations buzzed around her, both from her group and the surrounding tables. But Gaty wasn’t listening. She was too focused on overthinking.
Suddenly, she heard laughter. Lots of it. Loud, obnoxious laughter. Her mind instantly went to the worst: Two had shown their friends the letter and they were all laughing at it.
Her heart raced and she tried to convince herself that it was something else.
But she knew deep down that it wasn’t.
Two had shown everyone the letter.
She quickly excused herself to the bathroom, not even acknowledging Gaty when she tried to ask what was wrong.
“Uh, maybe she threw up?” Coiny suggested.
Pin nodded in agreement.
What Coiny said was partially true; Gaty felt like throwing up.
She sat— clothed— on the seat of the stall furthest from the door, and instantly began to sob. She was glad that she had made the letter anonymous, but that was the last thing on her mind right now.
All she could think about was the laughter. She wanted to go home and cry into her pillow, but there was still three hours of school left. So instead, she skipped her remaining classes and stayed in that stall for the rest of the day.
As soon as the bell dismissed, she ran out of the school and got into her car. She sped home, luckily not getting pulled over.
As soon as she got to her dinky little apartment, she went to her bedroom and sobbed.
She stayed like that for thirty minutes, until suddenly, her phone buzzed. She froze.
Was it Gaty or Pin checking to see if she’s okay?
It wasn’t. She opened her phone to read a message from Two.
“did u put that letter in my locker?? lol”
Her eyes widened. How did they know? She used a different hand writing and left it anonymously!
“i have a girlfriend”
“you know that lmao”
Gaty didn’t know that. She and Two rarely talked. After Two became popular, they only made small talk occasionally.
With shaky hands, Gaty replied, “Lol no”
She then made sure to ask if she was talking about what they were talking about, “Did someone give you a love letter??”
It took Two a few minutes to reply. When they did reply, it was just “ya ROFLMAO corny as shit”
Gaty’s heart broke.
