Work Text:
Lan Wangji loved everything about Wei Wuxian. But if there was one thing he could say he hated, it would be the fact that his husband never cried out when he had a nightmare. The most sound Wei Wuxian would ever make was a light wimpering sound, and Lan Wangji only knew about that because of a night when he'd been unable to fall asleep and heard it for himself.
Whenever he tried to talk to Wei Wuxian about it, the other man would smile and assure him it was nothing to be worried about, and how he probably just didn't want to disturb Lan Wangji's sleep.
But Lan Wangji wanted that. He wanted his sleep disturbed if it meant being able to comfort his husband when he was hurting.
So one night, Lan Wangji came up with an idea. As he and Wei Wuxian lay down to sleep, Lan Wangji ignored the proper sleeping position and curled himself around his husband, placing his head next to Wei Wuxian's throat.
"Ah ha Lan Zhan? Not that I don't love cuddles, but aren't you a little worried that I'll toss and turn and wake you up if you sleep like this?"
"Mn. If Wei Ying tosses and turns, will be here to calm you down."
Wei Wuxian sighed, but ultimately let his husband do as he wished. That night was, thankfully, devoid of nightmares, so both men were able to sleep through the night.
If Wei Wuxian thought the new sleeping arrangement was a one-time thing, however, he was proven wrong the very next night. This time, he didn't argue or complain; he just curled in right alongside Lan Wangji.
Unfortunately, the nightmares were not so easily disuaded twice, and Lan Wangji was woken by the light wimpering and shifting that was Wei Wuxian.
"Wei Ying!" He said quietly, trying to wake his husband up. When that didn't work, Lan Wangji shook him just a little. Thankfully, Wei Wuxian woke with a gasp and immediately grabbed his husband for a hug and started sobbing.
The tears that stained his night robes that night would be etched into Lan Wangji's memory for a long time yet. Finally, the tears dried, but Lan Wangji refused to lessen his hold on Wei Wuxian.
Before long, the two of them drifted back to sleep, clutching each other like they were the only ones in the world.
The next morning, Lan Wangji wasn't sure if he should bring up the nightmare or if Wei Wuxian would want to ignore it entirely. Thankfully, the problem was solved by Wei Wuxian, "It was Nightless City, but instead of Shijie being the one to push me out of the way, it was you." He said softly, while refusing to look at Lan Wangji, "Then it was a-Yuan, then Jin Ling, then Shijie, Jiang Cheng..." Wei Wuxian closed his eyes and tried to ignore the tears. Lan Wangji pulled him into a hug, and Wei Wuxian gasped, "Everyone kept dying for me, and I couldn't stop it!"
Lan Wangji said nothing and just held the love of his life, to remind him that he was still alive and everything would be alright.
