Chapter Text
Athena hadn't said anything, but she had been hovering a little closer to Hera the entire day, not anxiously, but with that almost uncanny caution that told Hera her daughter felt there was something different.
She lay down with the girl that evening, heart swelling at how easily Athena curled into her arms. It had been seven years since the early days after the crash, four since she was officially hers even in the eyes of the law, but Hera did not take her daughter's affection for granted.
"You wanna talk about something, right?" Athena asked in a small voice.
Hera stroked her hair.
"Very perceptive, baby. Yes, I have something I want to tell you."
Athena looked up at her, grey eyes shrewd.
"Can I guess?"
Hera frowned, amused.
"Sure, you can guess."
Athena hesitated, throat working. Her fingers bunched Hera's shirt nervously.
"Are you- are you gonna have a baby?"
For a moment, Hera was speechless.
"I can't see it, that's not what I meant," Athena continued hastily. "You look like always. But you keep touching your stomach... for a few weeks now. At first I thought it was hurting but you don't act like that, so I thought maybe... It's probably wrong, I'm sorry, Mom."
Hera hugged her more tightly, chuckling in disbelief.
"No, sweetheart, you are dead on the money. I just can't believe you noticed that, you're so observant and sweet. Yes, you're gonna have another sibling."
She watched the girl anxiously, unsure of her reaction.
Athena smiled cautiously.
"Pallas is gonna lose it when I tell her," she said softly. She wrapped her arms more tightly around her mom.
"Probably," Hera agreed. "And how are you feeling about it?"
"I'm happy," Athena said, though it sounded a bit automatic. "I- I hope they'll like me."
Hera kissed the top of her head.
"Of course they will, darling. You'll be their big sister, and I know you'll be great with them. They won't be able to help loving you."
Athena nodded, though her brow remained furrowed.
"Does Ares know yet?"
Hera shook her head.
"I wanted to wait to tell you in person, not over the phone, and you know he could never keep that secret from you."
That got a smile out of the girl. Her gaze traveled to Hera's stomach.
"Can you feel them yet?"
Hera smiled.
"Not quite yet, it's a bit early. Probably in the next weeks sometime."
"How old are they?" Athena asked, her hand gingerly touching her mom's belly anyway.
"About three months," Hera said.
"But you knew for ages then," Athena said, sounding slightly hurt.
Hera stroked her hair.
"For a little bit, yeah. Dad and I thought very carefully about when to tell you, because we don't want you and Ares to have to keep it secret from your friends and from the rest of the family, and now's a good time. It's not because we don't trust you, we just want to make it easier. It'll be a big change."
Athena nodded thoughtfully.
"But can you call me when you feel them?" she asked quietly. "Right away?"
Hera nodded.
"Promise."
Athena settled her head against Hera's chest the way she had done when she was smaller.
"Do you have a name yet?"
"No. I was hoping you'd help me find one. You do not want to know what Dad wanted to name Ares, he is banned from naming kids forever."
Athena giggled.
"No, I wanna know!"
Hera laughed.
"You will not believe me. He wanted to call him Khrysopelex."
Athena snorted.
"What kinda name is that?"
"I have no idea. No name my child is getting, that's for sure. We have to save this one from a similar fate."
Athena nodded, serious.
"I'll find a book. I hope the school library has one on names... they might not, though. Not many moms looking for baby names there."
"I have some from when I was looking for names for Ares. You can take some to school and look through them if you want."
Athena nodded eagerly.
"When will you know if it's a boy or a girl?"
"In a few weeks when I go for an ultrasound, maybe. It depends how they're positioned whether you can see. Ares was not very cooperative back in the day. But I think we should pick boy- and girl names, just to be sure we don't get surprised when they're born, don't you think?"
Athena nodded. Naturally, she was in favor of the safer option.
She was quiet for a bit and Hera sensed something else was coming.
"Would you have had them sooner if not for me?" she asked quietly.
Hera looked at her, heart aching at the unspoken question.
"Maybe," she replied truthfully. "And maybe I would not have another baby at all. It's impossible to say."
Athena looked at her own hand resting on her mom's stomach.
"Did you want three kids?"
Hera closed her eyes briefly, then pulled the girl closer.
"Thea. I know what you're asking. And I can assure you, no matter how things came to be the way they are, no matter how little we planned it, you've been such a gift in my life. I don't love Ares more than you, and I won't love the little one more than you either. You're my baby, Thea, and you will always be, no matter what happens. We're having a baby because we want to give you and Ares another sibling, not because you're not enough for us."
Athena didn't reply, but she buried her face in Hera's shirt and let herself be held, and Hera hoped that maybe, she believed it a little bit.

Chapter Text
Later, Hera would reflect that the fact that Hestia was with her at the ultrasound rather than her husband, was a rather strange prophetic indication of how things would be.
Zeus had easily promised to come, and equally easily broken that promise, and if Hera was being honest, she was beating herself up about allowing herself to believe that things would be different this time.
“Would you like to know the gender?”
Hera nodded.
“The kids would never forgive me if I didn’t find out,” she said with quiet warmth. “They’re already mad I have appointments when they’re at school.”
Miss Hale, the ultrasound technician, smiled mildly.
“They’re still excited for their sibling?”
Hera nodded.
“Athena has three pages of names in ‘the wider selection’, as she calls it. Male, Female and Unisex in equal measure.”
The ultrasound technician chuckled, working on setting up the ultrasound.
“She’s still an academic, isn’t she?”
“Truly.”
“And Ares?”
“Has about 100 plans what to do with his little sibling every day, and completely ignores that they’ll be a baby for a while.”
“Ah, of course. Here comes the gel, it’ll be a little cold."
Hera felt her heartbeat pick up. Somehow, you never got used to this.
She gripped Hestia's hand a little tighter when the transducer touched her skin.
Her sister gently ran her thumb over the back of her hand.
"Let's take a look," Miss Hale said, and the grainy black and white image appeared on screen.
Hera had taken a thorough look at Ares' ultrasound images before this to remember what she could expect to see. She had wanted to look at Athena's too, they had them in a folder, but even the thought of how Metis had gone to an ultrasound like this and how excited she had to have been at the pictures of her baby had been enough to make her tear up.
Pregnancy definitely made her more emotional about this than normal.
"We'll do some measuring today," Miss Hale said. "And of course we'll look at their organs and everything else to make sure everything is as it should be."
The transducer moved over Hera's belly, the cool gel slightly moving with it.
"There they are." Miss Hale indicated a small blob on the screen. "Still lying feet down, but that's not a point of concern, they can still turn around, it's common at this stage. And here we have the heartbeat, too, sounding strong and steady."
The soft sound of a small heart came through the Doppler, making Hera blink away tears. Hestia stroked her arm.
"And here's their little head," Miss Hale said with a smile. "Let me note down some measurements."
Hera looked at the monitor, blinking hard to make her gaze less blurry, memorizing the lines that indicated her baby's head.
Thea is going to be fascinated.
When she had talked to her daughter on the phone yesterday, Athena had already mentioned reading about ultrasounds during pregnancy. Hera was just ever so slightly worried that her daughter would see things beyond her age.
"Oh, it seems like the little one would like you to know the gender, too," Miss Hale said with a laugh. "Congrats, Hera, that'll be another boy."
Hera smiled. She hadn't wished for one or the other, but it still felt like a step closer to holding her baby in her arms, somehow.
Hestia pressed her hand with a smile.
"Now we know who'll be outnumbered at home," she commented lightly.
"Well, me, mainly," Hera replied with a soft laugh. "But that was a given."
The three women shared a moment of laughter before the technician continued the scan.
Miss Hale took another measurement, then halted, and moved the transducer back, frowning as she looked at the monitor.
Hera couldn't see anything unusual (though, if she was being honest, ultrasound pictures did not translate intuitively for her), but her heartbeat instantly picked up.
She waited for the woman to move on and ease up, but she didn't, and she didn't move from the spot she was at.
Hestia looked at her sister's frightened face and gently pressed her arm.
"Is something wrong?" she asked Miss Hale calmly.
The woman smiled, but it didn't seem to reach her eyes.
"I'll just take some more pictures for the doc to look at. We're almost done."
Hera's gaze flickered to Hestia, as if to ask for confirmation.
This wasn't an answer, right? She evaded that on purpose.
Hestia mouthed 'It's gonna be okay.' and kept stroking her arm.
Miss Hale finished up, having remained silent for the rest of the examination, which had been incredibly unsettling.
"Would you wait here for a little, I want the doctor to look at this."
Hera nodded weakly, but a panicked tear slid down as the technician left.
"They don't do that," she whispered, voice coming higher than intended. "Something's wrong."
Hestia took her hand, holding it tightly.
"It might be something small. She said the heartbeat is steady, that already means a lot. Deep breaths, okay?"
Hera tried her best, turning her face against her sister's arm to ground herself.
It seemed to be ages before Miss Hale returned with Dr. Dilem, a middle-aged woman with black-rimmed glasses that had always reminded Hera of one of her chemistry teachers. Her smile was calm.
"Good afternoon, Hera. Miss Hale found something that I'll want to re-scan. There's no need to panic, we just want to make sure."
She sat down and the transducer moved across that same spot again.
Hera was shaking.
Dr. Dilem put the machine away and the screen flickered off. Hera wanted to reach for it, to keep it on, so she could see the small life inside of her, remind herself it was there despite the fear.
“I’m sorry that took a little longer,” the doctor said gently. “You seem pretty stressed, which is completely understandable, so I should probably lead with the fact that what we found does not put the baby in immediate danger. All his organs work just fine, nothing unusual that we spotted there.”
Miss Hale handed Hera’s cardigan to Hestia, and the woman gently helped her into it. Hera sat up slowly, trembling hand immediately finding the swell of her belly.
Dr. Dilem smiled sympathetically.
“We did find something concerning though. There is a section on the back where the spinal cord appears to not have closed. That’s consistent with a condition called Spina Bifida.”
Hera felt dizzy. Her mind refused to process the words the doctor had said.
“What… what does this mean?” she heard herself asking weakly.
"It means that there is a gap in the spine. We can see a small bump on the baby's back at that spot, around the middle of the spine. We will need more thorough imaging, and I'll have you transferred to more a more specialized facility to assess it properly and talk through options that you have."
Hestia wrapped her arm around her sister's shoulder, steadying her.
"If the spinal cord is affected," she said, voice more even than she felt. "does that come with paralysis... or is it too soon to tell?"
"We cannot say for sure," Dr. Dilem said, in a tone that read distinctly as 'I have thoughts but I can't tell you' to Hestia. "Spina Bifida comes in varying severity, from being able to walk unaided to needing a wheelchair, we cannot make a prognosis of that right now."
Hera spoke again, something small in her voice that made Hestia tighten her hold protectively.
"Will- will he be in pain?"
"In most cases, since it's a non-progressive defect, and with the common treatments, it is not an inherently painful condition long-term. Usually it doesn't come with cognitive impairment either."
"Does-" Hera's voice faltered. "Do you know what caused it?" The question carried the silent follow-up Could I have prevented this?
Dr. Dilem shook her head. "There is no common cause known at this time. It likely occurred very early during pregnancy, before you might have even known you were pregnant."
She paused briefly.
The printer in the corner worked as Miss Hale started printing out the pictures from the ultrasound.
"I know this is a lot to process right now, and it's hard to give answers without more detailed scanning. I'll refer you to specialized facility for maternal care where those can be made. I'll try to get you an appointment within the week."
Hera nodded numbly.
"What do I- do... until then?" she asked shakily. "I don't want to... I don't want to hurt him-"
Dr. Dilem nodded.
"That's understandable. You don't have to be extra careful with them, rest if you're tired, stay attuned to their movement just like you have been. Besides the neural tube defect, he presents as perfectly healthy, his growth is on track, and his organs are working as they should. I know it's easy for me to say, but there is no need for additional worry."
Hera drew a shaky breath.
"I do- he is moving around. Less than Ares, but I've been feeling him-" There were about ten implicit questions in the sentence.
Dr. Dilem smiled sympathetically.
"Unfortunately, that doesn't mean we can tell how mobile he'll be after birth. But it's good you know how much is his normal either way."
The printer stopped.
"I can explain briefly what we can see here," the doctor said. "If you need a moment at any point, do tell me. I know this has to be overwhelming."
Hera just nodded, leaning slightly forward.
The black-and-white picture was blurry, but Hera saw the head this time without being told. She tried to make out the rest of the body, gaze naturally drawn to the back area.
"You can see the opening right here." Dr. Dilem pointed at a small white dot. "That's how we can tell. I'm showing you this so you know where the anomaly is and you don't get worried looking, okay? There can be other physical indicators for Spina Bifida, but we checked for that, nothing else on the scans."
Hera nodded, then pressed her hand to her mouth, a silent sob shaking her frame.
The doctor said something in a blur about giving her time to process, that they'd take care of the follow-up and call her when they had an appointment, and to sit there as long as she needed.
Hera reached out to hold on to the ultrasound picture through her tears.
She was frightened, yes, and her mind barely allowed a coherent thought, but that was a picture of her son and she wanted to hold on to that.
Notes:
welp, that's gotta be scary.
I have no idea about pregnancy lol. or spina bifida, though I am doing my best to learn ofc.
I just tried to get across how terrifying the not-knowing part is and how worried Hera is for her baby and whether he'll be okay.Obligatory shoutout for Hestia, goddess of being the best sister possible.
And equally obligatory boo for Zeus, god of being the worst husband.ya'll ready to meet Pallas?

Chapter Text
The ride home had a strange kind of mood. Hera sat in the passenger seat, rigid and still, trying not to cry while following her rampant thoughts, and Hestia was driving, giving her quiet.
Hera still held the ultrasound picture, doing her best not to crumple it from sheer stress.
"What- what do I do?" she asked finally, her voice small and shaky.
"Here's what we'll do right now," Hestia said gently. "We're gonna drive home, you're gonna sit down and have a cup of tea, I'm calling Demi to come over and then I pick up Ares from school and go to the community center or the park with him so he's out of the house until tonight. I know you're completely overwhelmed, we'll take it one hour at a time. You won't be making big decisions until the specialists tell you more in a few days."
Hera shivered even though she wasn't cold.
"Gods... gods, Thena will be waiting for a call, I told her I'd call her..."
"If you want, I'll text her and tell her you're exhausted and need some time to yourself and will call her after."
Hera nodded numbly.
Hestia parked the car in front of their house and walked around the back to open the door for her sister. Hera stayed seated, unsure whether she could move.
"Hey," her sister said gently. "Come here, okay?"
She offered her arm, helping Hera out of the car, and then pulled her close. Hera all but folded into the embrace.
"I know," Hestia murmured. "I know this is scary, but we'll get through it. I'm right here, you don't have to deal with this alone."
Hera shuddered.
"What if he's in pain?" she all but whimpered, tears beginning to fall again. "I love- I love him, I don't want him to be in pain..."
"I know. I know. The doctor said it's not likely. I don't think babies would be in a lot of pain in the womb, they're basically floating around there, so nothing would rub or something like that."
Hestia had to admit to herself that she did not in fact know if that was true, but she thought the theory would still help more than an 'I don't know.' right now.
She gently guided Hera inside, debated for a moment and decided on the living room over the bedroom.
Hera sank onto the couch, cradling her belly with shaking hands.
Hestia kissed the top of her head before she got her a blanket.
"Now you just try to breathe a little bit, alright? I'll get you a cup of tea and call Demi."
Hera just nodded, more tears running down her cheeks.
The clock showed that to pick up Ares, Hestia still had a little time, though probably not enough for a seamless transition between her and Demeter.
Normally, she would have risked five minutes, Ares was usually late himself, still playing with his friends after the bell, and he would most likely not have been worried, but the issue was that if he was on time and no one was there, he would walk home. And while he was not Athena and likely would not remember the ultrasound on his own, he would if he saw his mother.
Hestia put on the kettle and dialed her sister's number.
Luckily, Demeter also had a sense for when it was urgent.
"Hes?"
"Hi. Listen, we just got back from the ultrasound. The baby- there's something wrong with his spine. Not dangerous-" she said quickly when she heard her sister gasp, "-as far as I understand, the worst case is that he won't be able to walk. But Hera is a mess, obviously. I need you to come over and be there for her so I can keep Ares out of the house."
"Oh, poor Hera." Demeter's voice wavered. "I'm on my way. Does he know?"
They didn't have to clarify who 'he' was. Zeus had to really conduct himself well to make them refer to him by his name.
"Not yet," Hestia said. "But I'd say call him soon. The last thing she needs is him being pissed that everyone else knew before him."
She transferred the water to a teapot and watched it turn earthy green.
"If he says a word about... not continuing the pregnancy, unless Hera does so first," Demeter said cooly. "Would you kindly help me hide the body?"
"Of course," Hestia said. "Just stay away from the nice carpets with any blood."
"You got it. Okay, I'm off now, see you in a sec or talk to you later."
"Thanks, Demi." Hestia hung up the phone and brought the tea over to the living room.
Hera still sat in the same spot, looking at her phone with glassy eyes.
"Hera," Hestia said gently. "Don't do the googling right now, you're just gonna worry yourself."
She checked her watch - five more minutes before she should really set off - and sat down beside her sister, wrapping her arm around her.
Hera leaned her head against her shoulder.
"I just want to- I barely got what they were saying," she said miserably. She turned the phone to Hestia. "But- but this article is from a pretty good clinic, and they say- they say he could have a fulfilled life, that he could be independent and happy..." Her voice trailed off into sniffles. Hestia gave her a tissue.
"I just- I didn't think this was going to happen..." Hera whispered.
"I know, of course not," Hestia said. "Nobody expects that sort of thing to happen. But he's not in danger, that's what the doctor said, and that's the most important thing right now, isn't it?"
Hera nodded.
"I have to tell Zeus," she murmured.
Hestia nodded.
"Yeah, you do. How about you wait until Demi is here before you call him? She's on her way."
She didn't say that she wanted her sister to have a safety net in case her husband decided to be an asshole about this.
"Okay," Hera whispered. "And I need to tell Thea... that we can talk later... I'm not ready yet, I don't know what to say..."
"How about you tell her that you're back from the ultrasound, that it was really exhausting and that you need a bit of time to rest, and that you'll call her later?"
She knew she had said it before, but her sister wasn't really in a state to retain that information.
"Do you want me to type?" she asked.
Hera handed over her phone wordlessly.
Hestia found her chat with Athena and started typing.
Hey, we just got back from the ultrasound. It was a lot and I'm really tired, so I'll call you later, okay? Don't worry <3 Love you.
Hera nodded after she had read it.
"Thanks," she whispered.
"No problem, Hera. I have to go now if I want to catch Ares. Demi will be here in a few moments. Don't do more googling, okay?"
Hera nodded again, and Hestia left with an uneasy feeling in her stomach at her sister being alone.
A few miles East, in the Thalassa Academy for Girls, Athena looked up from the memory game when her phone buzzed.
"That's gotta be Mom, finally."
Pallas matched two sharks from their game and grinned.
"Well, what are you waiting for? At least if you don't wait till we're done, you won't lose out of anxiety. Wanna give you a fair chance."
Athena stuck out her tongue and snatched the phone from the bedside table.
They were sitting on the ground between the bed because the two decks of memory cards were way too many for any table in the dorm room. Pictures of owls and sharks already stacked on either side of the game.
If you believed in fate bringing people together, the fact that both girls had gotten an animal memory game from the same series of their respective favorite animal in the term Pallas had come to Thalassa and had brought it to school with them, would have been a pretty strong indicator that things were meant to be.
They had mixed up the cards, which had exactly the same design on their backs, just a few weeks into knowing each other, and never bothered to unmix them since.
Now, Athena read her mom's message, frowning, and then put the phone down, shoulders sagging.
"She says she'll call me later," she said, barely hiding the disappointment in her voice.
"Oh," Pallas said, grimacing. "Everything okay?"
Athena bit her lip, sitting back down at her spot.
"She didn't say something was wrong, just that she's tired. I guess she'll lie down first, I don't know."
"Maybe." Pallas reached out to lightly touch her friend's knee. "I'm sure she'll call soon."
Athena wasn't satisfied.
"Ares will come home in a minute," she muttered. "He'll know first. Mom knew it was important to me- cos I can't just run home extra fast and be first. I know she's tired, and I don't wanna be mad, I just-" She sighed, running her hands through her brown curls. "I thought she'd remember."
Pallas watched her for a moment and then got up to hug her.
"Okay, I get that," she said. "That's not cool of her."
Athena hung her head.
"Am I mean and selfish?" she asked softly. "Dad said- Dad said it was selfish of me when I cried about not being there for them repainting the nursery."
Pallas shook her head, her short curls bouncing.
"No, Thea, you're not selfish. You're just excited and stuff. Anyone would be, you're gonna have a little sibling."
"But pregnancy is very exhausting," Athena murmured. "I read that. I can't be mad at Mom for being tired."
"Dad always says it's okay to be disappointed and angry and stuff," Pallas said. "As long as you don't go and be mean to people and hurt them, you can feel anything and it's not wrong."
Athena sighed.
"I guess," she muttered, unconvinced.
Pallas lightly boxed her shoulder.
"C'mon, let's finish the game and then do homework, that'll distract you from waiting."
Athena hesitated, then nodded and turned back to the game, finding two hammerhead sharks on her next turn.
Pallas gasped dramatically, grasping her chest.
"Betrayal! Oh, fates, how will I ever recover!"
Athena's mouth twitched into a smile.
"It was there the the entire time, Pall', you could have taken it."
"A true friend would have left it until the last card," Pallas lamented, now sprawled on the carpet. "Oh, fates, my best friend has forsaken me just to win, left me alone to freeze on the steps of the palace-"
Athena giggled, lying down on the other side of her friend.
"What play is that supposed to be even?"
"Life!" Pallas exclaimed. "Look how cruel you are, Thena, for picking my favorite animal in the entire world right in front of my eyes..."
Athena grasped for her chest, too, leaning over her friend.
"No, please, forgive me," she pleaded, still grinning. "I didn't mean to do you so wrong, Pallas, please believe me, dearest of friends."
"Too late," Pallas croaked. "How will I ever live through this?"
"Maybe I could save you with a trade," Athena suggested. "You get the hammerhead and... I think you have the horned Owl pair, you could give me that and the count and your heart will be settled."
Pallas blinked and sat up.
"I suppose that might just be enough," she said, finding the matching pair and traded it with the hammerhead.
"My baby," she cried, holding it close to her heart.
Athena broke down into giggles and Pallas joined her.
"You're so dramatic," Athena got out after a bit.
"Imagine I had snatched the Little Owls," Pallas protested.
"Fair point," Athena said. "That would have hurt."
Pallas sat back down cross-legged and looked over the cards.
"Now where was anything I had memorized..."
"Now that," Athena said. "Really isn't my fault."
Notes:
My babies ;-;
gah i love everyone (not zeus)Pallas' first appearance :D Always a delight, that one **boops her nose**
And it is genuinely just very strange to write Athena being like? Well-adjusted? Happy? Only a little troubled but like mostly doing fine? What is happening to my owl? (no it won't last)hope you like it :)
