Work Text:

The night was quiet, peaceful as it always was. The sky above had a small glisten, a glimpse of something Three had never seen before.

Though, she couldn’t tell if there was actually something different about the sky or if her messed up eye was causing problems. Three put her hand on the injured eye, the eyepatch already removed by her. Whatever Five made it out of, it irritated her skin.

Well, she’d add that on to the list of things she had to do around here: make working eyepatches. Despite the equation playground not technically electing a leader, it had been her who’d been taking up the role de-facto.

Cleaning things up, managing the Algebraliens’ often-rowdiness, making sure everyone was accounted for at the end of the day—it was all her job. She enjoyed it, of course, seeing her friends be well was the joy of her life!

Did it get a little stressful? Sure, but as long as she could take care of her community, it was fine.

As Three got lost reminiscing about the Algebraliens, one of them appeared right beneath her.

“Hey! Why’d you take off the eyepatch I gave you?” It was Five. One of her best friends!

“Hey, Five! I just removed it because, well, it was pretty itchy. Sorry!”

Five scratched her back sheepishly, not expecting it to be their fault Three took it off. “Oh.. that’s fine, then.” Five sat down with three on the medium-sized boulder she was on, Three giving her a hand up.

“Is your eye doing better then, at least?” Five asked, moving themself closer to Three to see for themself.

“I mean, it only hurts a little when I touch it now. Still can’t see clearly out of it.”

“Gosh, Three, I’m really sorry. I really shouldn’t have thrown that ball so hard at you.” Five lamented, looking down at the grass below them.

Three chuckled slightly, turning her towards him. “It’s fine, we all make mistakes.” Three squished Five’s nub, (Like the top of their head :p) a small squeaking noise coming out of it.

Five stayed quiet for a second, before coming up with an idea on how to maybe fix Three’s ailment. “Y’know, there’s this thing Four and X do..”

“Hm?” Three hummed, curiosity twinkling in her working eye.

“Remember when One bit X for absolutely no reason?”

A large cackle came out of Three’s mouth, thinking about the time. “Yeah! And we had to exile One for a little bit? I hope she still isn’t too butt-hurt over that.”

“Yeah, yeah, but I talked to Four about it a few hours ago, and he’d told me how he got X to feel better in no time!”

“Really? What is it?” Three asked, her curiosity peaked.

“Well, I’m still a bit iffy on it myself, but apparently, kissing the part that hurts will make it feel better, in this case, your eye.” Five got out, a slight blush on her face. If it was from embarrassment or from wanting to actually kiss Three–who knows.

Three covered her mouth, giggling again. “Is this a ploy so you can kiss me?”

“H-hey! You know me, I would never! I just want you to feel better after what I did.” Five got out, the blush a little more prominent on her face.

The blush on Five’s face also appeared on Three’s, being glad that Five would do so much for her to get better. “I’m kidding, if it’ll really make me feel better, then you can go right ahead.” Three spoke, brushing Five’s hand lightly with her own.

“Okay, then stay still.” Five grabbed Three, putting her on their lap. Another wave of blushing twisted in the both of them, Five’s eyes darting slightly off of Three at the thought of what she was actually doing.

Five moved herself closer to the swollen eye, placing a small peck on it as a smile grew on Three’s face. Even if her eye didn’t feel immediately better, she felt herself get all giddy inside at Five’s kiss.

Five placed her back down on the rock, looking at her face (Body? Half of their bodies are their faces I SWEAR) for any signs that her eye got better. Seeing that nothing physically had changed, they decided to ask.

“Well.. how’s your eye now?” Five asked, her mind still a little dazed from kissing Three.

“Um.. my eye feels the same.. maybe you need to kiss it more?” Three said, half because she wanted Five to kiss her again and half because she actually wanted her eye to get better.

Five sighed playfully, scooching themself as close to Three as she could be, legs touching.

“Fine, tell me when it stops hurting, if ever, okay?”

“Okay!” Three said, Five grabbing one side of her as he leaned in to, once again, kiss her eye.

Three closed her eyes, Five starting from the bottom as she kissed each little part of Three’s bruised eye.

Five made sure to check up on her eye carefully after each kiss, trying to see if it had any effect on her eye. Despite not seeing anything, the giggles from Three seemed to indicate happiness, so she kept going.

Three felt her stomach tingle with each kiss, the red near her face coloring pink in complete flusteredness.

Five finally travelled across the entirety of Three’s eye, giving her one last kiss for good measure as she finally finished.

“Do you feel better now?” Five asked, rubbing Three’s back softly.

Three chuckled sheepishly. “It still feels.. the same.”

“Ugh.. I knew I shouldn't have trusted Four! He’s probably still salty over the high-five thing.”

Three put her arm onto Five’s leg, calming them down. “It’s fine, it’s fine! Even if my eye doesn’t feel much better, you made me feel better. And that’s good enough for me.”

“Huh? Made you feel better?” Five asked, a tad bit confusedly.

“You’re cute- I mean, you kissing me was.. cute. So it made me feel better inside.” Three smiled at Five, Five reciprocating a smile back themself.

“Then.. I’m glad it made you feel better.” Five grabbed the top of Three’s body, giving her a kiss on the forehead too. “..And I think you’re cute too.”

Before Three could properly respond to Five’s comment, they ran off, ignoring all of her pleas.

Three ultimately decided to stop chasing Five, going back to her rock. She laid down on it, looking up to the stars once again.

Her and Five had always been like.. this. Teetering, but never quite there when it came to their relationship. A game of will they, won’t they.

But, it was alright. She’d see Five tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that one! She could spend another night thinking about what they were, and what she wanted to be with Five.

Right?
