Poor flitterling! (It is hard to refrain from addressing them by the Immortality Epic terms).
I tend to be rather dismissive of Aramis' love affairs, but he does feel them deeply - or at least, the liaison with Marie. Even if it wasn't primarily romantic/sexual (or maybe it was, it's hard to make out exactly how involved they were as lovers as distinct from co-conspirators), it was plainly one of the relationships he did take seriously and did have the power to affect him when he felt rejected or cast off.
He's still not quite as hardened and worldly as he will become, and the prospect of being thrown over really did hurt him. He needs ALL THE CONSOLATION!
Indeed, the sweet darling suffers greatly! But with the mildest, most patient forbearance, for he has the sweetest disposition.
I believe we have once come to the conclusion that Marie was the one person in the books whom Aramis loved explicitly and sincerely. Clearly, he has good taste, because we know that the nymph duchess is a delight. And, despite what Athos thinks, very amusing.
The good thing about all of them is that they're overemotional, in every respect. It's so easy to create drama for them: everything is a duelling matter, and if it's not a duel, it's a broken heart that clearly means one has to leave everything behind, goodbye, cruel world, how you have disappointed me, I shall drown my melancholia in booze or books.
It's true: Flitters' love affair with Marie seemed a lot more drama heartfelt than when we see him again in 20YA and he's like "I'm casually just gonna get Normandy for my possible bastard and then never see his mom again."
The Bourbon nymph was never very important. Flitters prefers the waters of the Loire.
Aramis getting rid of his mistress and the bebby is one of his best moves - elegant, efficient, good revenge and genuinely nice. Even if he hadn't taken his vows of celibacy seriously (except when he got dispensation, on account of his health) - he probably took a look at Athos and was like, If I accept bebby in my life, I might end up growing tulips in the country. Better not risk it.
