Very true. I mean, we have seen Tarvek jump on the grenade--or rather the FSMADD--once for Agatha's sake, but in general, he does much better when he has even a few seconds to come up with an elegant and finely crafted plan before he jumps. (I think it was baroque_mongoose who described him as having a mind that could hide behind a corkscrew!) I guess the difference is that Gil is a warrior and Tarvek is a politician... that may be why they're more effective as a team.
Agatha: Hey, Gil! All of Paris is about to go up in flames, and Zola has her head caught in a bucket! Up and at 'em, hero boy! Gil: Hm? A bucket? Again? Okay, I'm comin'. --https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20090717
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO GIL I WILL KILL EVERYONE IN EUROPA AND THEN MYSELF
It's practically a litmus test; the only people who do not adore Gilgamesh Wulfenbach are the mass-murdering megalomaniacs Gandhi would not contest being turned into fertilizer. Even Tarvek comes to love him in time.
