Comment on Bog and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

  1. This story is always such an absolute delight. I read it several times back when I had newly discovered Strange Magic and was desperately binging all the fanfiction that I could. I’m sorry it has taken me as long as it has to actually go back through all those stories I enjoyed so much in that first rush of hyperfixation, but this story has brought me an innumerable amount of joy.

I always love the inherent humor of a story about an ordinary someone discovering magical creatures and being in denial about it or being exceedingly startled by it. I can’t help but grin at Marianne’s expense when she realizes that the insect has a little human face :)

Bog is wonderfully grouchy and sarcastic and sullen, though I can definitely let him off the hook for it. Being a goblin king stuck in a fly trap would be horribly humiliating, and even more so being trapped like an ordinary insect in a jar by a goggling human.

I love the vivid descriptiveness of the sentences “It was a deliberate silence, the silence of someone very loudly not speaking. It was the kind of silence that went with murderous glares and the irritated grinding of teeth.”

Delightful story, and I’m looking forward to reading back through it more slowly and thoughtfully than on my initial binge. Cheers!
